  1. Right, is it? Ready.

  2. Excellent.

  3. Raul always flatters me when he kind of looks, decides, and then puts his earpiece in.

  4. Sometimes I'll start and I'll see him take it out and throw it away.

  5. Or my favorite, my favorite is, I'll start telling him some of my best stories and I'm about a few seconds and he'll say, is this a long story? Because I'm already bored.

  6. I did that to me in surgery.

  7. Oh God.

  8. It's pouring out my heart.

  9. Raul, this is a long story.

  10. Okay team, I don't, if you can't see that.

  11. If you're upset and you care, feel free to shift.

  12. All right team, well, we have taken up in our series on scripture several questions which commonly suggest themselves to thoughtful inquiring minds.

  13. Questions concerning scripture's authority, clarity, historicity, canonicity, transmission.

  14. And if you are just joining us and these are questions of interest to you, the recordings are accessible on Trinity website.

  15. I was supposed to say that.

  16. Okay, well, we want to conclude our series on a most practical note.

  17. Come on in, come on in team, you're making it.

  18. Perfect timing, we're just beginning here.

  19. We want to conclude this series on a most practical note.

  20. Taking up not so much a further doctrine or belief about scripture as a practice with regard to scripture.

  21. For as vital for disciples of Jesus as are their right beliefs about scripture or anything for that matter.

  22. Having the right beliefs as James disturbingly reminds us will not necessarily distinguish us from demons.

  23. As James says in James 2.19, even the demons believe.

  24. As Jonathan Edwards glosses this, Satan himself is educated in the best divinity school in the universe, the heaven of heavens.

  25. So we must put these beliefs into practice.

  26. That's going to be what we want to focus on in this final session, to explore a practice together.

  27. Namely, how do we engage the scriptures that we now hopefully appropriately esteem.

  28. How do we engage the scriptures to our spiritual prophet?

  29. Or, to use the language of the Apostle Paul in Colossians 3.16,

  30. how do we get the word of Christ to come to dwell in us richly?

  31. And sisters and brothers, I can think of few more vital and practical subjects as this.

  32. And this topic is, for me, one that is kind of mingled with wonderful nostalgia and memories.

  33. For I want to take as my guiding text a passage of scripture that my dad opened up to me when I was a young man.

  34. In fact, actually just a little boy.

  35. I can remember it so vividly.

  36. Just opening up the scripture and saying, hey, let's work through a passage, son.

  37. And what he did, I knew from his life that what he was giving to me was not incidental,

  38. but at the heart of his own life and walk with God.

  39. Dad lived in the word.

  40. My earliest memories are running through the woods, memorizing scripture with him.

  41. We even had this arrangement that if I memorized a verse, I was a really little guy.

  42. If I memorized a verse, he would memorize the chapter in which it was contained.

  43. We would do that together.

  44. I really got him once, and I memorized one in Psalm 119.

  45. He memorized the whole thing.

  46. And if I memorized the chapter, he'd have to memorize the book.

  47. But, yeah, it was a good arrangement.

  48. Start with the verse.

  49. Exactly.

  50. Exactly.

  51. And countless times over breakfast, I would see him kind of with boyish delight.

  52. Just he'd open up his Bible and say, look what I found in the word today.

  53. Isn't this fantastic?

  54. Look at this.

  55. Look at this.

  56. And his engagement with the word was not episodic.

  57. There was really no ebb or flow.

  58. It was really consistent.

  59. In fact, the day that he died, he died in a bicycle accident.

  60. And he was rooting the word.

  61. Maybe that's why he crashed, because he had his little verse pack with him.

  62. He's memorizing scripture.

  63. He was riding his bike.

  64. But the Lord took him.

  65. And so, all this to say, this model came to me with the credit of a godly life, which bore much fruit.

  66. And I want to pass it on.

  67. That's what I want to do today.

  68. And he took this outline from the book of James.

  69. James 1, 21 to 25.

  70. Let me read that.

  71. Read that for us.

  72. James 1.

  73. James 1, verse 20.

    James 1:20

  74. Picking up in 21.

  75. Therefore, put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

  76. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

  77. For if anyone is a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like one who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.

  78. For he looks at himself and goes away, and at once forgets what he was like.

  79. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets, but a doer who acts.

  80. She will be blessed in all she is doing.

  81. All right.

  82. All right.

  83. There we go.

  84. The context of this is the role of the word in bringing spiritual life.

  85. So verse 18, just before, we have been brought forth by the word of truth.

  86. So now James goes on to explain how that word sustains the life that it has inaugurated.

  87. And so I'm going to adopt the outline that dad gave me, and illustrate the truths with profuse and delightful reference to the Puritans, particularly.

  88. I'm rather fond of the Puritans.

  89. So here are the four steps that dad drew from this passage.

  90. First, when we come to the word preparation, verse 21, preparation.

  91. Putting aside all filthiness.

  92. Or in the inimitable King James Version, superfluity of naughtiness.

  93. What a phrase.

  94. Put away all superfluity of naughtiness.

  95. You know, often we dive right in to scriptures.

  96. But it's fitting and needful to prepare our hearts for the engagement.

  97. As Thomas Watson, these people that I'm naming, they're all just famous Puritans.

  98. As Thomas Watson put it, many come rashly to the reading of the word.

  99. And no wonder if they come without preparation, that they go away without profit.

  100. Or Thomas Manton.

  101. They that look for the bridegroom had need trim up their lamps.

  102. In agricultural metaphor, weed before you seed.

  103. Weed before you seed.

  104. Jeremiah 4 tells us, plow up the fallow ground, sow not among thorns.

  105. Sometimes, you know, if I haven't dealt with my heart and I just dive right into scripture,

  106. it's like I'm trying to sow good seed among thorns.

  107. We don't want to do that.

  108. So how do we put aside all this superfluity of naughtiness?

  109. Well, we check to see if we're cherishing any sin.

  110. And David's prayer is a good model here in Psalm 139, 23, where,

  111. Search me, O God, and know my heart.

  112. Try me and know my thoughts.

  113. See if there be any wicked, hurtful way in me.

  114. And if the Holy Spirit reveals anything, well, we confess it, according to 1 John 1, 9,

  115. and he will cleanse us.

  116. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins

  117. and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  118. So we just simply repair to the fountain.

  119. In those wonderful words of Zechariah, that fountain opened for sin and impurity.

  120. Or as I told our girls as they were growing up, you know,

  121. you wash your hands before the meal.

  122. And that's what we're doing with respect to scripture.

  123. We're just washing our hands before our meal.

  124. The second part of preparation concerns our attitude or our disposition.

  125. Notice how it says there, in humility.

  126. In humility.

  127. So we place ourselves under the word and recognize its authority.

  128. It judges us.

  129. Not we it.

  130. So we need to drop our defensive guarded posture.

  131. And rather read with a readiness to submit to it.

  132. And where does God disclose himself?

  133. Well, the highest heaven, it says, but also to the humblest heart.

  134. Isn't that wonderful?

  135. Isaiah 66, 2.

  136. But to this one I will look.

  137. To him who is humble and of contrite spirit and who trembles at my word.

  138. Or Luke 1 puts it this way, 52 and 53.

  139. He gives grace to the humble.

  140. He hath filled the hungry with good things.

  141. So we want to come to the word hungry and humble.

  142. Hungry and humble.

  143. And then in the final phrase of our text in James here.

  144. Receive the word.

  145. Notice, able to save.

  146. This highlights our dependence upon the scriptures.

  147. We need to welcome the scriptures work in our lives.

  148. For the Bible's work in our hearts is God's saving work.

  149. Recall that receiving the word is a condition of salvation.

  150. I want to be really careful here.

  151. Not for salvation, but of salvation.

  152. In other words, if we are being saved, we are necessarily receiving the word.

  153. These things just are correlates.

  154. They will go together.

  155. They will go together.

  156. So there's our preparation.

  157. That's the first step.

  158. Preparation.

  159. Any questions or comments about preparation?

  160. You seeing this in the text?

  161. Emerge from the text?

  162. Okay.

  163. Yeah, pretty straightforward, I guess.

  164. All right.

  165. So, with heart prepared, we turn to the second step.

  166. And that is, again, borrowing from my dad, meditation.

  167. Meditation.

  168. And this is suggested by the word that we have in verse 25.

  169. What's rendered in our text?

  170. Looks intently.

  171. Looks intently.

  172. Parakupsis is the word.

  173. It's kind of like the image of bending over and peering.

  174. It's the same word that's used of John, you know, at the tomb.

  175. Bending over and peering in and looking with all your strength.

  176. Referring to the disciples of the sepulchre in Luke 24, 17.

  177. Or, wonderfully, that marvelous phrase in 1 Peter 1, 12, about the angels desiring to search out God's saving actions.

  178. They longed to look into salvation.

  179. Same thing.

  180. So, what is it that we intently look into?

  181. What is the object of our meditation?

  182. Meditation.

  183. Actually, let me add a little sidebar here.

  184. And because as evangelicals, oftentimes we narrow the scope of our meditation.

  185. But then we're kind of parting company with a long and hallowed tradition of Christian sisters and brothers

  186. who also believe that we can meditate on nature and providence.

  187. So, Psalm 19, the heavens declare the glory of God.

  188. Or, Acts 17, God is the shaper of history.

  189. So, these are also areas where we can meditate.

  190. It does have a long and faithful pedigree.

  191. As Thomas Manton puts it,

  192. A gracious heart, that is a believing heart,

  193. A gracious heart is like an alembic.

  194. An alembic, it's like an apparatus of distillation.

  195. It distills things.

  196. A gracious heart is like a distillation apparatus.

  197. It can distill useful meditations out of all things it meeteth with.

  198. As it seeth all things in God, so it seeth God in all things.

  199. Isn't that wonderful?

  200. As it seeth all things in God, in the framework of God.

  201. For from him and to him and through him, or through him and to him are all things.

  202. We see all things in God, therefore we see God in all things.

  203. Wonderful, wonderful thought.

  204. And again, John Owen and his great work on spiritual mindedness.

  205. He actually, the first one that he takes is a characteristic of a spiritual person.

  206. is that they are able to discern God's hand in providence.

  207. Interesting, isn't it?

  208. Jonathan Edwards' work, Divine Emblems.

  209. Everything has a stamp of their creator.

  210. So he turns to nature to distill some meditations from.

  211. John Bunyan's Divine Emblems, too, is another.

  212. In fact, probably the first book of poetry for children in the English language.

  213. John Bunyan's Divine Emblems, wonderful, where he says, go to the ant and you'll have a little

  214. poem about an ant and some sort of useful meditation for children and for grownups, too.

  215. Those are the book, the stripe of books that parents love to read to their kids because

  216. they're so good.

  217. So, but nature or history cannot be an adequate supply of any new content to revelation.

  218. Okay?

  219. All it can do is really, it cannot inform, it can just impress.

  220. So we know what we know from Scripture, from his revelation.

  221. But then this bright, wonderful world and the motions of history can illustrate and impress

  222. these truths that we've got from Scripture.

  223. And what a wonderful gift that is, that he surrounds us with all these things because

  224. we need impression.

  225. We need impressing if we're going to walk a godly life.

  226. So, I just add that because sometimes that's new for this most recent generation.

  227. Oh, we can meditate on nature and history and stuff, too?

  228. Yes, we can.

  229. But, but the chief object of meditation is Scripture.

  230. And this is the object that James, in our passage, is indicating.

  231. Notice, he refers to it as the perfect law.

  232. Parallel to where else in Scripture you would see the law of the Lord in Psalm 1 or Psalm

  233. 119.

  234. Okay?

  235. Does this just refer to the laws of the Bible like the Ten Commandments?

  236. It might seem so, the law of the Lord?

  237. No.

  238. No.

  239. James here, and this is the common biblical idiom, is not speaking of a particular portion

  240. of God's word.

  241. Rather, all of God's word considered authoritatively.

  242. That's why it's very natural to refer to all of God's word is the law.

  243. It's not all law per se, but all of it is authoritative.

  244. It comes to us that way, and it highlights that aspect.

  245. So, that's what's going on there.

  246. And the term is a helpful one, for it reminds us that we need to accept its authority completely.

  247. If you get rid of what you don't like, you can't wrestle with God.

  248. God can't challenge you and correct you.

  249. It can't then be a life-changing encounter.

  250. As we consider meditation, let me enforce how vital it is for the disciple, but alas, how

  251. commonly neglected.

  252. As Richard Baxter writes, why so much preaching is lost among us.

  253. And professors, not university appointments, but those who claim to have faith, professors,

  254. you know.

  255. And professors can run from sermon to sermon, and are never weary of hearing or reading,

  256. and yet have such languishing, starved souls.

  257. I know no truer or greater cause than their ignorance and unconscionable neglect of meditation.

  258. Isn't that interesting?

  259. And pretty scary.

  260. So, there we are running from sermon to sermon to sermon, getting all this stuff,

  261. and yet our souls can still be languishing, languishing, starved souls.

  262. And he says, it's the lack of meditation.

  263. The lack of meditation.

  264. Yeah.

  265. But I'm sure that the reason for that is because they were much more distracted by media than

  266. we are today.

  267. So, I'm sure we don't have these sorts of problems.

  268. It is helpful to consider meditation in relation to, first, the dynamic, how it works, and then

  269. the discipline, how we work at it.

  270. Okay?

  271. How it works, and then how we work at it.

  272. So, first, the dynamic.

  273. How does it work?

  274. Psalm 1 tells us that the one who meditates is like a tree.

  275. And just, you know, running with a better word.

  276. Water comes in one end and fruit at the other.

  277. Okay?

  278. Unlike a pipe where it's water in, water out.

  279. Okay?

  280. A change, a change takes place in the substance of the tree.

  281. And this is what meditation does.

  282. Meditation.

  283. Here's an important phrase.

  284. Meditation makes the word flesh.

  285. Meditation makes the word flesh.

  286. It takes the principles and truths and works them into our being.

  287. Meditation.

  288. Meditation.

  289. Meditation.

  290. Emotionally.

  291. Affectively.

  292. Actively.

  293. Actively.

  294. The word becomes us.

  295. Meditation is a way to make the Bible like the burning bush before Moses.

  296. out of which God speaks to us

  297. directly and arrestingly.

  298. Meditation is the descent of the mind

  299. into the heart.

  300. And as with the Mount of Transfiguration,

  301. the truth begins to shine.

  302. And as with the Mount of Transfiguration,

  303. you remember,

  304. as the truth is transfigured before us,

  305. that's what transforms us.

  306. Truth in its transfiguration,

  307. that's what transforms us.

  308. Truth works into and explodes in the heart

  309. like a combustion engine,

  310. kind of imparting the soul with speed and strength.

  311. Or think of the heart like photographic film.

  312. I don't know.

  313. Remember that ancient thing that we happened so long ago?

  314. The photographic film,

  315. chemically treated to make it sensitive to light.

  316. Okay?

  317. And that's the Holy Spirit working on the heart

  318. to make it sensitive to the impressions.

  319. And then meditation brings the truth like light,

  320. impressing itself upon the heart

  321. that's prepared or sensitized by the Holy Spirit.

  322. And the corresponding images that it creates,

  323. that are produced,

  324. are these new affections.

  325. What then our heart longs for

  326. and is delighted with.

  327. That's the change.

  328. It's a wonderful one.

  329. And meditation actually reworks

  330. the affectional currents of our heart

  331. such that they can start flowing

  332. in different directions.

  333. Like they did with the Chicago River.

  334. I don't know how they do this,

  335. but they actually got the river

  336. to start flowing in a different direction.

  337. And that's what meditation does to our hearts.

  338. And oh, do we not have a need for that,

  339. for some change in the currents.

  340. And simple Bible reading,

  341. even Bible study,

  342. and I'm really a fan of Bible reading

  343. and Bible study.

  344. You know, don't get me wrong here.

  345. But even these things will not achieve this.

  346. Such inner working really requires meditation.

  347. As Thomas Watson writes,

  348. study is the finding out of a truth.

  349. Meditation is the spiritual improvement of a truth.

  350. The Puritans would use improvement,

  351. that it changes us,

  352. it makes us different people.

  353. That's what they meant by improvement.

  354. The spiritual improvement of a truth.

  355. The one searcheth for the vein of gold.

  356. The other digs out the gold.

  357. Study.

  358. Oh, listen to this metaphor.

  359. Study is like a winter sun

  360. that hath little warmth and influence.

  361. Meditation melts the heart when it is frozen

  362. and makes it drop into tears of love.

  363. What a wonderful metaphor.

  364. A winter sun.

  365. Or again, with a similar metaphor.

  366. This is Thomas Watson.

  367. There is as much difference between the knowledge of a truth

  368. and the meditation of a truth

  369. as there is between the light of a torch

  370. and the light of the sun.

  371. Set up a lamp or a torch in the garden

  372. and it hath no influence.

  373. The sun hath a sweet influence.

  374. It maketh the plants to grow

  375. and the herb to flourish.

  376. So, or likewise,

  377. knowledge is but like a torch

  378. lighted in the understanding

  379. which hath little or no influence.

  380. It maketh not a man the better.

  381. But meditation is like the shining of the sun.

  382. It operates upon the affections.

  383. It warms the heart and makes it holy.

  384. Meditation fetcheth life in a truth.

  385. That is, pulls life out of the truth.

  386. If we would experience real change,

  387. we must give ourselves to meditation.

  388. A man shall as soon live without his heart,

  389. writes Thomas Brooks,

  390. as he shall be able to get good

  391. by what he reads without meditation.

  392. Wow, I mean, this is really forceful claims.

  393. But these people have credibility.

  394. They really do.

  395. A man shall as soon live without his heart,

  396. as he shall be able to get good

  397. by what he reads without meditation.

  398. Excellent.

  399. You say that study is like looking at a meal,

  400. but meditation is eating it.

  401. Excellent.

  402. And in fact, I'm going to use,

  403. Baxter's going to use a metaphor

  404. just like that in just a moment.

  405. That's excellent.

  406. Saints have a lasting rest

  407. or the Reformed passage?

  408. Saints have a lasting rest.

  409. Yeah, yeah, that one.

  410. No, yeah.

  411. So these are some vaunting claims, friends.

  412. You know, do you feel like it overstates the case

  413. or do you feel the ring of truth to this?

  414. So how may we practice this vital discipline?

  415. Okay, so we were looking at the dynamic,

  416. you know, how it works.

  417. Now, the discipline that we must practice,

  418. how we work at it, okay?

  419. Meditation is the essential discipline

  420. of all of the disciplines.

  421. And really, it's a compound discipline

  422. involving both study and prayer.

  423. As Thomas Manton explains,

  424. meditation is a middle sort of duty

  425. between word and prayer

  426. and hath respect to both.

  427. The word feedeth meditation

  428. and meditation feedeth prayer.

  429. And the prayer that arises

  430. is what we might call answering prayer.

  431. Okay, this is distinct from calling prayer.

  432. Okay, Peter steps out of the boat.

  433. Help me, Jesus, I'm drowning.

  434. Okay, that's calling prayer.

  435. Okay, really great.

  436. And we want to do it all the time.

  437. All right.

  438. But in answering prayer,

  439. God chooses the subject.

  440. He sets the tone

  441. and he commences the conversation.

  442. You see, meditation begins with Bible study

  443. but proceeds to prayer.

  444. But see there, but God is choosing

  445. what the subject matter is

  446. of the conversation with that.

  447. In the wonderful phrase of Richard Baxter,

  448. meditation is taking the truth

  449. and praying it down into your soul

  450. until it catches fire.

  451. Praying the truth down into your soul

  452. until it catches fire.

  453. Helpful on the meditation process,

  454. I find Augustine.

  455. There are a few of them I'm talking about.

  456. Augustine of Hippo, 354 to 430.

  457. And he speaks of meditation

  458. as the ascent of the soul into God

  459. and breaks down the discipline

  460. into three steps.

  461. Okay, three steps.

  462. The first he calls retentio.

  463. Retentio.

  464. Okay.

  465. And this is the distillation

  466. of the truths of scripture

  467. and holding them centrally

  468. before our mind.

  469. Basically, Bible study.

  470. And here, observational skills

  471. are really key.

  472. So pray with David

  473. for powers of observation

  474. as we do this.

  475. Psalm 119, verse 18,

    Psalms 119:18

  476. open my eyes.

  477. And you grow in this,

  478. we grow in this,

  479. by forcing ourselves to do it

  480. and just staying at it.

  481. Kind of like what we know to do

  482. with our kids

  483. when we're teaching them

  484. to eat a meal.

  485. Good, take a bite.

  486. Good, good.

  487. Okay, take another one.

  488. Yep, lift the fork,

  489. open the mouth,

  490. put it in.

  491. Chew, chew, chew.

  492. Good, okay.

  493. Now take another one.

  494. You just have to keep at it.

  495. We don't do this naturally.

  496. Louie Agassiz,

  497. 19th century Harvard naturalist,

  498. would have his students observe

  499. a fish in a bowl

  500. for two whole days.

  501. Graduate students would come up

  502. and he was the most,

  503. you know,

  504. father of natural science

  505. in America,

  506. Louie Agassiz.

  507. I mean, you'd study with him,

  508. you were going to be great.

  509. And they'd show up,

  510. you know,

  511. pretty confident

  512. that they were the cat's pajamas

  513. and he'd say,

  514. here, stare at this fish

  515. and make some observations.

  516. And he would make them do it.

  517. He would hold their head

  518. to the bowl

  519. for two days.

  520. Two days.

  521. And they'd go crazy.

  522. But they'd get to be good.

  523. You know,

  524. one time he was asked,

  525. what was your greatest

  526. contribution scientifically?

  527. And this guy had a CV

  528. and he said,

  529. I have taught

  530. men and women

  531. to observe.

  532. That was his greatest,

  533. that's what he felt

  534. to be his greatest contribution.

  535. And lingering

  536. is required.

  537. This is not cursory,

  538. but protracted.

  539. Thomas Manton writes,

  540. the Christian

  541. is like some heavy birds

  542. as the bustard,

  543. I guess the buzzard,

  544. and others

  545. that cannot get upon wing

  546. without a run

  547. of a furlong or two.

  548. Have you seen those things?

  549. What a great image.

  550. You see him kind of flapping,

  551. trying to get up

  552. off the ground.

  553. And we're like that.

  554. Manton again writes,

  555. content not thyself

  556. with the surface

  557. of the truth,

  558. like a swallow

  559. skimming the water

  560. of a lake.

  561. But get into

  562. the bowels of it.

  563. Puritans are a real model here.

  564. They would see the text

  565. like a multifaceted diamond.

  566. And they'd kind of hold it up

  567. and gaze at it

  568. for a long, long time,

  569. make observations,

  570. and then just slightly turn it,

  571. look at another face of it,

  572. then slightly turn it,

  573. keep looking at that.

  574. Often they would write

  575. entire books

  576. on a single verse.

  577. On a single verse.

  578. A common phrase

  579. that is always spoken

  580. with this thrill and delight

  581. is,

  582. ah,

  583. this verse is full of matter.

  584. It's full of matter.

  585. Here's perhaps

  586. my all-time favorite

  587. Richard Baxter quote.

  588. Okay?

  589. 57thly.

  590. Unbelievable!

  591. 57thly.

  592. He's given you a list

  593. of his observations.

  594. You know in his sermon,

  595. 57thly.

  596. You know,

  597. even the most stalwart

  598. preacher today

  599. will never get to 57 points.

  600. But they did.

  601. Routinely.

  602. 57thly.

  603. Ah.

  604. Yeah,

  605. that has a savor

  606. of heaven about that.

  607. And we need to,

  608. we need to break

  609. these observational barriers.

  610. You know what I mean?

  611. Well,

  612. you're staring at the Bible,

  613. you think you've got everything,

  614. you think you've got everything,

  615. but you stay at it,

  616. and then suddenly,

  617. boom!

  618. And then so much more

  619. comes in.

  620. I used to do this

  621. with disciples

  622. in the early days

  623. where we'd take

  624. John 3.16.

  625. They'd even memorize.

  626. They thought,

  627. I know it!

  628. I know it!

  629. Say,

  630. all right, men,

  631. we're going to make

  632. 100,

  633. and women,

  634. I did it with my daughters too,

  635. we're going to make

  636. 100 observations.

  637. And, you know,

  638. it was agony

  639. keeping them there,

  640. you know,

  641. just like eating.

  642. Take another bite of peas,

  643. you know,

  644. there's nothing more,

  645. no, no, no, no, no, no.

  646. You know,

  647. I'd physically hold their head,

  648. you know,

  649. so they can't move.

  650. You know,

  651. we'd fetter them.

  652. But it was one of the most

  653. exciting experiences they had.

  654. They'd get to 100 observations

  655. on a single verse,

  656. and it changed their lives.

  657. It changed their lives.

  658. They couldn't believe it.

  659. Oh, my goodness.

  660. Well,

  661. some practical aids

  662. for the process.

  663. You know,

  664. when you're looking at a text,

  665. paraphrase it.

  666. You think you understand it?

  667. Try to put it

  668. in your own words.

  669. Whoa,

  670. pretty challenging.

  671. Outline it.

  672. Forces you to discern connections.

  673. Here's one.

  674. Isolate one word.

  675. What is this ad?

  676. What if I take this word away?

  677. What goes missing?

  678. Just one word.

  679. Bombard it with questions.

  680. The journalistic questions.

  681. These prompt observations.

  682. Just like reading a book.

  683. You know,

  684. you want to,

  685. you know,

  686. before you go into a book,

  687. go into a book with questions,

  688. or else you're not going to

  689. end up with answers.

  690. You know,

  691. like,

  692. oh, wow,

  693. I just,

  694. I just read War and Peace.

  695. Wow,

  696. well,

  697. what was it about?

  698. Oh,

  699. Russia?

  700. Start with questions,

  701. or you're not going to end up

  702. with any answers.

  703. Here's a leaf

  704. from Jonathan Edwards.

  705. This is a discipline

  706. that he had.

  707. He took a Bible

  708. and broke open the spine,

  709. and then he would put blank pages

  710. between the pages of text,

  711. and it was already one

  712. that had the massive margins.

  713. And then he would just,

  714. he would just make observations

  715. all over this blank Bible.

  716. And this is what I'll offer to you.

  717. If I need to preach on something,

  718. or if I need to meditate on something,

  719. I'll just take a big piece of paper,

  720. just write the verse out

  721. in the middle of the thing,

  722. and then there's just white,

  723. and then just fill it

  724. with observations.

  725. Fill it with observations.

  726. And clearly,

  727. this is not the kind of

  728. through the Bible

  729. in a year approach,

  730. but it's very,

  731. very rewarding.

  732. When you slow down,

  733. you will see things

  734. that you would have missed

  735. kind of with the flyover

  736. or the drive-by technique.

  737. It was like that's

  738. when we talked on the phone

  739. or on our ride,

  740. Psalm 119, 36 and 37.

  741. Turn my heart from,

  742. incline my heart to your testimonies

  743. and not to covetousness.

  744. Turn my eye away

  745. from looking at worthless things

  746. and revive me in your way.

  747. And all those first words,

  748. me and you,

  749. I found out that it was God

  750. who turned my eyes.

  751. Yes.

  752. It was God who revived me.

  753. Yes.

  754. It was God who inclined

  755. my heart to his ways

  756. and not me.

  757. Yes.

  758. He was doing it.

  759. That's how you find,

  760. oh, I don't do anything.

  761. It's him who does everything.

  762. Excellent.

  763. It's the glory of scripture.

  764. That's a great idea.

  765. I never saw that.

  766. Yeah.

  767. I'm like, oh, I don't do this.

  768. He does it.

  769. Yeah.

  770. Fantastic.

  771. Yeah, that's right.

  772. That's right.

  773. I mean, you will go away

  774. laden with riches

  775. if you linger and meditate.

  776. Absolutely.

  777. It seemed,

  778. writes Jonathan Edwards,

  779. it seemed,

  780. or sorry,

  781. I seemed

  782. often to see

  783. so much light

  784. exhibited

  785. by every sentence

  786. and such refreshing

  787. food communicated

  788. that I could not

  789. get along

  790. in reading.

  791. Often dwelling long

  792. on one sentence

  793. to see the wonders

  794. contained in it.

  795. And yet almost

  796. every sentence

  797. seemed to be

  798. so full of wonder.

  799. Don't you

  800. hear that confession

  801. beckoning you?

  802. Come on and see.

  803. Come on and see.

  804. So there's the first step.

  805. Retentio.

  806. This is kind of Augustine's

  807. how do we do this.

  808. Second step.

  809. Contemplatio.

  810. Contemplatio.

  811. Contemplation, I guess.

  812. Here, we seek

  813. to gaze at God

  814. through the truths

  815. that we have distilled.

  816. Okay, we move

  817. from breaking down

  818. the truth,

  819. analysis,

  820. to gazing at it

  821. as a whole,

  822. intuition,

  823. so to speak.

  824. Okay?

  825. And the Puritans

  826. would draw from

  827. gemology

  828. to elucidate.

  829. You know,

  830. they would say,

  831. well, the first is

  832. cutting the diamond

  833. painstakingly.

  834. And then the second

  835. is holding it up

  836. and admiring its beauty.

  837. Admiring its beauty.

  838. Or if you're a musician,

  839. you're moving

  840. from studying the score

  841. to actually hearing

  842. the music.

  843. And so,

  844. we take the truths

  845. from our study

  846. and,

  847. says Samuel Ward,

  848. oh,

  849. I love this.

  850. We roll them under,

  851. roll them under

  852. thy tongue.

  853. Chew on them

  854. till thou feel

  855. some sweetness

  856. in the palate

  857. of thy soul.

  858. Isn't that great?

  859. I remember

  860. when I was little kids,

  861. missionary kids,

  862. once a week,

  863. we'd go to the candy store

  864. and we'd each get

  865. to get one piece

  866. of candy.

  867. And I'd get the toffee

  868. because it was so good

  869. and it would last

  870. a long time

  871. and I'd find that

  872. part of your tongue

  873. that was most responsive

  874. to sweetness

  875. and I would roll

  876. that thing under my tongue

  877. and it would last me

  878. all five blocks

  879. walking home.

  880. You know,

  881. and that's what he says,

  882. do it with scripture.

  883. You know,

  884. roll them under

  885. thy tongue.

  886. Chew on them

  887. till thou feel

  888. some sweetness

  889. in the palate

  890. of thy soul.

  891. Isn't that a wonderful image?

  892. Oh,

  893. Samuel Ward,

  894. thank you,

  895. dear brother.

  896. And here,

  897. we labor to make

  898. our portion

  899. in meditation

  900. become a window

  901. or an oculus

  902. and we want to

  903. yearn with all

  904. of our strength

  905. to see Christ,

  906. to behold his glory

  907. in that text.

  908. Christ.

  909. So,

  910. I ask myself there,

  911. how can I adore

  912. Christ in this truth?

  913. What here stirs me

  914. to praise?

  915. What attribute

  916. of God

  917. sparkles here?

  918. This is where,

  919. in the wonderful

  920. phrase of Martin

  921. Lloyd-Jones,

  922. the truth

  923. begins to shine.

  924. The truth

  925. begins to shine.

  926. Where you begin

  927. to feel

  928. his reality

  929. pressing upon you

  930. and his attributes

  931. begin to blaze.

  932. Here,

  933. meditation becomes

  934. the bellows

  935. of the affections.

  936. Remember those things?

  937. You know,

  938. on the coal.

  939. That's Thomas Watson.

  940. Like bellows

  941. on the coal

  942. of what we have

  943. taken in

  944. in our Bible study.

  945. So,

  946. meditation is bellows.

  947. This is critical

  948. because our hearts,

  949. are they not?

  950. Our hearts

  951. are like

  952. green wood.

  953. They're like

  954. green wood.

  955. Thomas Manton

  956. writes,

  957. green wood

  958. is not kindled

  959. by a flash

  960. or a spark,

  961. but by

  962. constant blowing.

  963. Wonderful.

  964. Then,

  965. Psalm 39.3,

  966. while I meditated,

  967. the fire burned.

  968. Again,

  969. Watson,

  970. the reason

  971. we come away

  972. so cold

  973. from reading

  974. the word

  975. is because

  976. we do not

  977. warm ourselves

  978. at the fire

  979. of meditation.

  980. And this

  981. takes us to

  982. Augustine's

  983. third step,

  984. dilectio.

  985. delight.

  986. Oh, oh, oh, sorry.

  987. Yeah, yeah, here we go.

  988. Dilectio.

  989. Delight.

  990. Delight.

  991. And this

  992. is where

  993. your soul

  994. becomes

  995. a palate

  996. and you

  997. taste of the

  998. glory that's

  999. disclosed.

  1000. And we can

  1001. scarcely,

  1002. this can scarcely

  1003. be called a step

  1004. because we're

  1005. not in control

  1006. of this.

  1007. It's kind of like

  1008. whitewater rafting.

1009. Have you done some of that?

  1010. Or kayaking

  1011. in these

  1012. great

  1013. Vermont streams

  1014. where

  1015. it takes

  1016. a lot of

  1017. skills,

  1018. but the thrill

  1019. isn't the skills.

  1020. It just takes

  1021. skills to stay

  1022. on the river,

  1023. but the thrill

  1024. is the river.

  1025. It's the river.

  1026. And that's

  1027. what we're

  1028. coming into now.

  1029. You know,

  1030. just the thrill

  1031. of the river.

  1032. That's the delight.

  1033. Skills are just

  1034. to keep you there.

  1035. Turn over my canoe

  1036. so fast.

  1037. And it's often,

  1038. you know,

  1039. we're not in control

  1040. of this.

  1041. It's often,

  1042. but it is often

  1043. the accompanying

  1044. experience.

  1045. The accompanying

  1046. experience.

  1047. We can build

  1048. the altar,

  1049. but the fire

  1050. must fall

  1051. from heaven.

  1052. And sometimes

  1053. our hearts

  1054. don't glow.

  1055. My heart

  1056. doesn't glow.

1057. A lot of the time

  1058. my heart

  1059. doesn't glow.

  1060. It's okay.

  1061. I'll come back

  1062. tomorrow.

  1063. And I'll gaze

  1064. again tomorrow.

  1065. It's all right.

  1066. I learned a lot.

  1067. You know,

  1068. it's okay.

  1069. Sometimes,

  1070. writes John Owen.

  1071. John Owen.

  1072. Sometimes.

  1073. Sometimes

  1074. these meditations

  1075. fill us

  1076. with joy

  1077. unspeakable

  1078. and full

  1079. of glory.

  1080. There is

  1081. to us

  1082. granted

  1083. a relish

  1084. and a

  1085. savor

  1086. in which

  1087. lies

  1088. the sweetness

  1089. and satisfaction

  1090. of the

  1091. spiritual life.

  1092. We taste

  1093. then by

  1094. experience

  1095. that God

  1096. is gracious

  1097. and that

  1098. the love

  1099. of Christ

  1100. is better

  1101. than wine.

  1102. John Owen.

  1103. Meditations

  1104. on the

  1105. glory of

  1106. Christ.

  1107. Or,

  1108. as Richard

  1109. Baxter

  1110. put it,

  1111. sometimes,

  1112. don't be

  1113. discouraged

  1114. if it doesn't

  1115. happen often,

  1116. sometimes

  1117. our meditations

  1118. be as the

  1119. chariot

  1120. of Elijah

  1121. and take us

  1122. up into

  1123. heaven.

  1124. Isn't that

  1125. wonderful?

  1126. Again,

  1127. that's

  1128. saints'

  1129. everlasting

  1130. rest.

  1131. Before we

  1132. move from

  1133. meditation,

  1134. I want to

  1135. underscore

  1136. one final

  1137. time its

  1138. vital

  1139. importance

  1140. in the

  1141. life of

  1142. the

  1143. disciple.

  1144. As Thomas

  1145. White writes

  1146. in his

  1147. Art of Divine

  1148. Meditation,

  1149. 1672,

  1150. so these are

  1151. periods still,

  1152. it is

  1153. better

  1154. to hear

  1155. one sermon

  1156. only and

  1157. meditate on

  1158. that

  1159. than to

  1160. hear two

  1161. sermons

  1162. and meditate

  1163. on neither.

  1164. Okay?

  1165. Or as

  1166. Baxter

  1167. quaintly put it,

  1168. Raoul

  1169. anticipated

  1170. him here,

  1171. a man

  1172. may eat

  1173. too much,

  1174. but he

  1175. cannot digest

  1176. too well.

  1177. Isn't

  1178. that great?

  1179. A man

  1180. may eat

  1181. too much,

  1182. boy do I

  1183. know that,

  1184. but he

  1185. cannot digest

  1186. too well.

  1187. Saints'

  1188. everlasting

  1189. rest.

  1190. Near the

  1191. end,

  1192. page 549.

  1193. In fact,

  1194. the whole

  1195. point of

  1196. eating,

  1197. surely,

  1198. is to

  1199. digest and

  1200. assimilate

  1201. it.

  1202. That's the

  1203. whole point.

  1204. Every sermon,

  1205. writes James

  1206. Usher,

  1207. is but

  1208. a preparation

  1209. for meditation.

  1210. Every sermon

  1211. is but,

  1212. nothing but,

  1213. a preparation

  1214. for meditation.

  1215. Which is a

  1216. preparation for

  1217. the consummation.

  1218. Yeah,

  1219. excellent.

  1220. That's great.

  1221. Yes,

  1222. that's right.

  1223. It will

  1224. accustom us

  1225. to our

  1226. occupation for

  1227. eternity.

  1228. That's right.

  1229. Faith is

  1230. lean,

  1231. writes

  1232. Manton,

  1233. and ready

  1234. to starve

  1235. unless it

  1236. be fed

  1237. with

  1238. continual

  1239. meditation.

  1240. So,

  1241. as Thomas

  1242. Watson writes,

  1243. a Christian

  1244. without

  1245. meditation

  1246. is like

  1247. a soldier

  1248. without

  1249. arms,

  1250. or a

  1251. workman

  1252. without

  1253. tools.

  1254. Without

  1255. meditation,

  1256. the truths

  1257. of God

  1258. will not

  1259. stay with

  1260. us.

  1261. The heart

  1262. is hard,

  1263. and the

  1264. memory is

  1265. slippery.

  1266. And so,

  1267. without

  1268. meditation,

  1269. all is

  1270. lost.

  1271. All is

  1272. lost.

  1273. Christ,

  1274. so let

  1275. me leave

  1276. you with

  1277. this charge

  1278. from the

  1279. pen of

  1280. Watson.

  1281. If you

  1282. have

  1283. formerly,

  1284. formerly

  1285. neglected it,

  1286. bewail your

  1287. neglect,

  1288. and now

  1289. begin to

  1290. make a

  1291. conscience

  1292. of it.

  1293. Lock up

  1294. yourself

  1295. with God

  1296. at least

  1297. once a

  1298. day by

  1299. holy

  1300. meditation.

  1301. Ascend

  1302. this hill,

  1303. and when

  1304. you are

  1305. gotten to

  1306. the top

  1307. of it,

  1308. you shall

  1309. see a

  1310. fair

  1311. prospect.

  1312. Christ

  1313. and

  1314. heaven

  1315. before

  1316. you.

  1317. Let me

  1318. put in

  1319. your mind

  1320. that saying

  1321. of Bernard.

  1322. He's talking

  1323. about Bernard

  1324. of Clairvaux,

  1325. Saint Bernard.

  1326. O saint,

  1327. knowest thou

  1328. not that

  1329. thy husband

  1330. Christ is

  1331. bashful,

  1332. and will

  1333. not be

  1334. familiar in

  1335. company?

  1336. Retire

  1337. thyself by

  1338. meditation into

  1339. the closet

  1340. or the

  1341. field,

  1342. and there

  1343. thou shalt

  1344. have Christ's

  1345. embraces.

  1346. So,

  1347. we have

  1348. preparation,

  1349. then

  1350. meditation,

  1351. and the

  1352. third step

  1353. is

  1354. application.

  1355. Application.

  1356. Verses

  1357. 22 through

  1358. 24 and

  1359. 25.

  1360. Or in

  1361. the words

  1362. of James

  1363. here,

  1364. our original

  1365. text,

  1366. becoming

  1367. or being

  1368. a doer

  1369. of the

  1370. word and

  1371. not merely

  1372. a hearer.

  1373. Now,

  1374. if we

  1375. neglect

  1376. this step,

  1377. we will

  1378. have lots

  1379. of company,

  1380. for we

  1381. will merely

  1382. swell a

  1383. throng that

  1384. no man

  1385. can count.

  1386. Those who

  1387. open the

  1388. word and

  1389. close it

  1390. without effect,

  1391. like the

  1392. fellow who

  1393. looks in

  1394. the mirror,

  1395. but walks

  1396. away and

  1397. forgets what

  1398. he saw,

  1399. the gross

  1400. deformity,

  1401. okay,

  1402. the spinach.

  1403. and the

  1404. result is

  1405. no benefit

  1406. at all.

  1407. Deluded.

  1408. Deluded,

  1409. James says.

  1410. And this

  1411. is pervasive,

  1412. but perilous.

  1413. Perilous.

  1414. Bible study

  1415. that stops

  1416. short of

  1417. response

  1418. becomes a

  1419. tool of

  1420. the devil

  1421. to make

  1422. us like

  1423. the other

  1424. denizens

  1425. of hell,

  1426. full of

  1427. truth

  1428. and

  1429. ungodliness.

  1430. Or in

  1431. Watson's

  1432. words,

  1433. reading

  1434. without

  1435. practice

  1436. will be

  1437. but a

  1438. torch

  1439. to light

  1440. men

  1441. to hell.

  1442. Okay,

  1443. now this

  1444. may seem

  1445. an extreme

  1446. contention,

  1447. but minds

  1448. more steeped

  1449. in scripture

  1450. assert the

  1451. same thing.

  1452. Jonathan

  1453. Edwards

  1454. has a

  1455. sermon

  1456. called

  1457. True

  1458. Grace

  1459. Distinguished

  1460. from the

  1461. Experience

  1462. of Devils.

  1463. Okay,

  1464. True

  1465. Grace

  1466. Distinguished

  1467. from the

  1468. Experience

  1469. of Devils

  1470. in which

  1471. he says,

  1472. Satan

  1473. is educated

  1474. in the

  1475. best

  1476. school

  1477. of

  1478. divinity,

  1479. namely

  1480. the

  1481. heaven

  1482. of

  1483. heavens.

  1484. Okay,

  1485. so it's

  1486. not just

  1487. knowledge.

  1488. And Jesus

  1489. underscores

  1490. the necessity

  1491. of application.

  1492. Matthew 7

  1493. from Sermon

  1494. on the

  1495. Mount,

  1496. 7,

  1497. 24

  1498. through

  1499. 27.

  1500. Remember

  1501. contrasting

  1502. the person

  1503. that builds

  1504. their house

  1505. on the

  1506. rock

  1507. and the

  1508. person

  1509. that builds

  1510. on the

  1511. sand.

  1512. Do you

  1513. remember

  1514. what the

  1515. contrast is?

  1516. What is

  1517. the difference

  1518. between the

  1519. one who

  1520. builds their

  1521. house on

  1522. the rock

  1523. and builds

  1524. their house

  1525. on the

  1526. sand?

  1527. Was it

  1528. hearing the

  1529. words?

  1530. Anybody

  1531. remember?

  1532. No.

  1533. No.

  1534. That's right.

  1535. That is

  1536. correct.

  1537. It is he

  1538. who hears

  1539. these words

  1540. of mine

  1541. and

  1542. puts them

  1543. into practice.

  1544. Remember

  1545. that's the

  1546. contrast.

  1547. The guy

  1548. whose house

  1549. is on

  1550. the sand,

  1551. oh they

  1552. hear all

  1553. these words,

  1554. they hear

  1555. all these

  1556. words.

  1557. They might

  1558. give a

  1559. tentative

  1560. lunch.

  1561. So that's

  1562. the contrast

  1563. there.

  1564. Not an

  1565. acquaintance

  1566. with Christ's

  1567. words but

  1568. their application

  1569. is determinative.

  1570. In other

  1571. words,

  1572. Mark 4

  1573. 24 and

  1574. 25,

  1575. Jesus makes

  1576. a similar

  1577. point.

  1578. Use what

  1579. you've got

  1580. or lose

  1581. it.

  1582. Use or

  1583. lose.

  1584. He who

  1585. has,

  1586. more

  1587. will be

  1588. given.

  1589. He who

  1590. has not

  1591. even what

  1592. they have

  1593. or thought

  1594. he had

  1595. will be

  1596. taken away.

  1597. Apply or

  1598. forfeit.

  1599. Apply or

  1600. forfeit.

  1601. And this

  1602. crucial step

  1603. naturally

  1604. becomes the

  1605. sure focus

  1606. of spiritual

  1607. warfare.

  1608. Remember what

  1609. Jesus said

  1610. in the

  1611. parable of

  1612. the soils?

  1613. The devil

  1614. comes and

  1615. takes away

  1616. the seed.

  1617. The seed of

  1618. the word

  1619. that's been

  1620. strewn on

  1621. us.

  1622. The devil

  1623. comes and

  1624. takes away

  1625. the seed.

  1626. That is,

  1627. keeps would-be

  1628. disciples from

  1629. acting on

  1630. it.

  1631. You're no

  1632. doubt familiar

  1633. with C.S.

  1634. Lewis's

  1635. Screwtape

  1636. letters,

  1637. the correspondence

  1638. between junior

  1639. and senior

  1640. demons,

  1641. Wormwood and

  1642. Screwtape.

  1643. So here's,

  1644. the great

  1645. thing,

  1646. writes Screwtape

  1647. to Wormwood,

  1648. is to prevent

  1649. your,

  1650. Wormwood's

  1651. Christian client,

  1652. who he's

  1653. trying to

  1654. keep from

  1655. becoming,

  1656. is to

  1657. prevent him

  1658. doing anything.

  1659. As long as he

  1660. does not

  1661. convert it into

  1662. action,

  1663. it doesn't

  1664. matter how

  1665. much he

  1666. thinks about

  1667. this new

  1668. repentance.

  1669. Let the

  1670. little brute

  1671. wallow in

  1672. it.

  1673. Let him,

  1674. if he has

  1675. any bent

  1676. that way,

  1677. to write a

  1678. book about

  1679. it.

  1680. That's

  1681. often an

  1682. excellent way

  1683. of sterilizing

  1684. the seeds,

  1685. which the

  1686. enemy,

  1687. because he's

  1688. referring to

  1689. God when he

  1690. says enemy,

  1691. these are

  1692. demons,

  1693. which the

  1694. enemy plants

  1695. in the

  1696. human soul.

  1697. Let him

  1698. do anything

  1699. but act.

  1700. We must

  1701. remember that

  1702. our aim is

  1703. ultimately not,

  1704. not really to

  1705. master the

  1706. scriptures,

  1707. but for them

  1708. to master

  1709. us.

  1710. That's what

  1711. we want.

  1712. We get into

  1713. the word so

  1714. it can get

  1715. into us.

  1716. And to

  1717. this end,

  1718. we must keep

  1719. telling ourselves

  1720. that God is

  1721. addressing me

  1722. when we

  1723. read it.

  1724. Kierkegaard,

  1725. in a sermon

  1726. on this very

  1727. verse,

  1728. entitled,

  1729. What is

  1730. required in

  1731. order to

  1732. look at

  1733. oneself with

  1734. true blessing

  1735. in the

  1736. mirror of

  1737. the word?

  1738. It's a

  1739. wonderful

  1740. sermon.

  1741. He writes,

  1742. the first

  1743. requirement is

  1744. that you

  1745. must not

  1746. look at

  1747. the mirror,

  1748. but must

  1749. see yourself

  1750. in the

  1751. mirror.

  1752. Isn't that

  1753. a wonderful

  1754. observation?

  1755. As a result

  1756. of meditating

  1757. on that

  1758. very passage,

  1759. you know,

  1760. what do we

  1761. do?

  1762. You know,

  1763. just looking

  1764. at the

  1765. Bible,

  1766. that's just

  1767. like looking

  1768. at the

  1769. mirror.

  1770. But what's

  1771. the point

  1772. of looking

  1773. at a

  1774. mirror?

  1775. Not

  1776. seeing the

  1777. mirror.

  1778. It's

  1779. seeing

  1780. yourself

  1781. in the

  1782. mirror.

  1783. That's

  1784. what James'

  1785. image is

  1786. about,

  1787. seeing

  1788. ourself

  1789. in the

  1790. mirror.

  1791. Kierkegaard

  1792. continues,

  1793. and remember

  1794. to say

  1795. to yourself

  1796. incessantly,

  1797. it is I

  1798. to whom

  1799. it is

  1800. speaking.

  1801. It is

  1802. I about

  1803. whom it

  1804. is speaking.

  1805. Let me

  1806. briefly touch

  1807. upon a few

  1808. practicals of

  1809. application.

  1810. a helpful

  1811. question to

  1812. ask is,

  1813. Lord,

  1814. what is it

  1815. in this

  1816. passage or

  1817. this truth

  1818. that you

  1819. are seeking

  1820. to impress

  1821. upon me?

  1822. And why

  1823. do you

  1824. want me

  1825. to know

  1826. this now,

  1827. today,

  1828. at this

  1829. moment in

  1830. my life?

  1831. Lord,

  1832. what is

  1833. it in

  1834. this particular

  1835. passage and

  1836. truth that

  1837. you are

  1838. seeking to

  1839. impress on

  1840. me,

  1841. and why

  1842. do you

  1843. want me

  1844. to know

  1845. it now,

  1846. today?

  1847. in this

  1848. particular

  1849. moment.

  1850. And if

  1851. you're having

  1852. difficulty

  1853. coming up

  1854. with an

  1855. application,

  1856. consider the

  1857. categories of

  1858. 2 Timothy 3.16.

  1859. Remember,

  1860. all scriptures

  1861. inspired by

  1862. God and

  1863. is profitable

  1864. for,

  1865. and then

  1866. use these

  1867. categories.

  1868. Doctrine,

  1869. teaching

  1870. truth,

  1871. reproof,

  1872. refuting

  1873. error,

  1874. correction,

  1875. reformation

  1876. of life,

  1877. teaching and

  1878. righteousness,

  1879. that is,

  1880. discipline in

  1881. right living,

  1882. in other

  1883. words,

  1884. the road,

  1885. how you

  1886. got off

  1887. it,

  1888. how to

  1889. get back

  1890. on it,

  1891. and how

  1892. to stay

  1893. on it.

  1894. It's really

  1895. comprehensive.

  1896. It's wonderful.

  1897. Also,

  1898. I find

  1899. helpful,

  1900. consider each

  1901. hat that

  1902. you wear.

  1903. I'm a

  1904. disciple of

  1905. Jesus.

  1906. I'm also a

  1907. husband.

  1908. I'm a

  1909. father.

  1910. I'm a son.

  1911. I'm a

  1912. friend.

  1913. I'm an

  1914. employee.

  1915. I'm a

  1916. cyclist.

  1917. I'm a

  1918. cyclist.

  1919. Exactly.

  1920. And if

  1921. this is

  1922. really what

  1923. God is

  1924. like,

  1925. what I

  1926. found here

  1927. in Scripture,

  1928. what difference

  1929. does that

  1930. make for

  1931. how I

  1932. live today

  1933. as a

  1934. father,

  1935. as a

  1936. husband?

  1937. Then you

  1938. put your

  1939. different hats

  1940. on.

  1941. How does

  1942. this make a

  1943. difference for

  1944. me in

  1945. these different

  1946. roles that I

  1947. have?

  1948. What

  1949. emotions,

  1950. attitudes,

  1951. behaviors

  1952. flare up

  1953. in these

  1954. different

  1955. arenas,

  1956. in these

  1957. different

  1958. roles that

  1959. I have?

  1960. What

  1961. flare up

  1962. when I

  1963. am forgetful

  1964. of this

  1965. truth?

  1966. How would

  1967. my private

  1968. life,

  1969. my family

  1970. life,

  1971. my church

  1972. life,

  1973. my friend

  1974. life,

  1975. my cycling

  1976. life be

  1977. different if

  1978. I grasped

  1979. this more

  1980. deeply?

  1981. So these

  1982. are really

  1983. helpful

  1984. application

  1985. questions.

  1986. And here

  1987. are six

  1988. quick tips

  1989. to make

  1990. it take.

  1991. So one,

  1992. be specific

  1993. in your

  1994. applications.

  1995. Be specific.

  1996. Not,

  1997. you know,

  1998. it might be

  1999. sincere,

  2000. but here my

  2001. application is

  2002. I'm going to

  2003. become a

  2004. better person.

  2005. That's my

  2006. application.

  2007. Or I'll be

  2008. more like

  2009. Jesus.

  2010. Great,

  2011. but too

  2012. vague.

  2013. It's too

  2014. vague.

  2015. Be specific.

  2016. Second,

  2017. be concrete.

  2018. How,

  2019. when,

  2020. what will

  2021. this take?

  2022. Okay?

  2023. Yeah,

  2024. you meet in

  2025. the quad.

  2026. Oh,

  2027. let's do

  2028. lunch.

  2029. Yeah,

  2030. that'd be

  2031. fun.

  2032. Let's do

  2033. lunch.

  2034. Oh,

  2035. if you

  2036. haven't

  2037. pulled out

  2038. your schedule

  2039. book and

  2040. figured it

  2041. out,

  2042. it's just

  2043. never going

  2044. to happen.

  2045. You've got

  2046. to be

  2047. concrete.

  2048. Be

  2049. realistic.

  2050. Don't be

  2051. overambitious.

  2052. I'm going

  2053. to outline

  2054. the whole

  2055. Bible in

  2056. multicolored,

  2057. you know,

  2058. no,

  2059. start small

  2060. and succeed

  2061. and then just

  2062. build on your

  2063. success.

  2064. I'm going

  2065. to stop

  2066. sinning

  2067. today.

  2068. That's

  2069. right.

  2070. Sincere,

  2071. but you'll

  2072. judge.

  2073. Fourth,

  2074. be

  2075. accountable.

  2076. Solicit

  2077. some support

  2078. to buttress

  2079. your

  2080. resolves.

  2081. Hey,

  2082. will you

  2083. ask me,

  2084. this is what

  2085. I'm working

  2086. on,

  2087. will you

  2088. ask me

  2089. how I'm

  2090. doing

  2091. on this?

  2092. That's

  2093. lacking

  2094. in our

  2095. church,

  2096. in all

  2097. churches.

  2098. Yeah,

  2099. often it

  2100. is.

  2101. Yeah,

  2102. yeah,

  2103. and having

  2104. the relationships,

  2105. the thick

  2106. fabric of

  2107. relationships

  2108. where people

  2109. will care

  2110. enough to

  2111. be lovingly

  2112. intrusive in

  2113. your life

  2114. to ask

  2115. you,

  2116. you know,

  2117. write out

  2118. the ten

  2119. questions you

  2120. hope to

  2121. God no

  2122. one ever

  2123. asks you.

  2124. Write them

  2125. down on a

  2126. piece of

  2127. paper and

  2128. give them

  2129. to your

  2130. friend to

  2131. ask you,

  2132. you know.

  2133. So,

  2134. and fifth,

  2135. begin,

  2136. begin.

  2137. So many

  2138. promises are

  2139. writing in

  2140. the sand,

  2141. for they're

  2142. just not

  2143. acted upon

  2144. promptly.

  2145. As George

  2146. MacDonald

  2147. writes,

  2148. he observes,

  2149. good notions

  2150. must take

  2151. advantage of

  2152. their first

  2153. ripeness.

  2154. Isn't that

  2155. good?

  2156. And this

  2157. is where

  2158. our determined

  2159. applications are

  2160. so often

  2161. scuttled.

  2162. I will

  2163. not lose,

  2164. or he

  2165. will not

  2166. lose his

  2167. loaf,

  2168. who has

  2169. taken care

  2170. to eat it

  2171. at once.

  2172. That's

  2173. Spurgeon.

  2174. He will

  2175. not lose

  2176. his loaf,

  2177. who has

  2178. taken care

  2179. to eat it

  2180. at once.

  2181. Neither

  2182. can he be

  2183. deprived of

  2184. the benefit

  2185. of the

  2186. doctrine,

  2187. who has

  2188. already

  2189. acted upon

  2190. it.

  2191. Most

  2192. readers,

  2193. look at

  2194. this image.

  2195. Oh,

  2196. my goodness,

  2197. metaphor.

  2198. Most readers

  2199. and hearers

  2200. become moved

  2201. so far as

  2202. to purpose

  2203. to amend.

  2204. But alas,

  2205. the proposal

  2206. is a

  2207. blossom which

  2208. has not

  2209. been knit,

  2210. and therefore

  2211. no fruit

  2212. comes of

  2213. it.

  2214. They wait,

  2215. they waver,

  2216. and then

  2217. they forget.

  2218. Till,

  2219. oh,

  2220. here,

  2221. oh,

  2222. image,

  2223. till,

  2224. like the

  2225. ponds

  2226. in nights

  2227. of frost,

  2228. when the

  2229. sun shines

  2230. by day,

  2231. they are

  2232. only thawed

  2233. in time

  2234. to be

  2235. frozen

  2236. again.

  2237. Oh,

  2238. that fatal

  2239. tomorrow

  2240. is blood

  2241. red

  2242. with the

  2243. murder

  2244. of fair

  2245. resolutions.

  2246. It is the

  2247. slaughterhouse

  2248. of innocence.

  2249. Spurgeon.

  2250. Yeah,

  2251. Kierkegaard

  2252. Simone writes,

  2253. the next

  2254. hour,

  2255. after one

  2256. we call

  2257. the quiet

  2258. hour,

  2259. that's when

  2260. you've been

  2261. meditating

  2262. and you have

  2263. the impression,

  2264. the next

  2265. hour,

  2266. after the

  2267. one we

  2268. call a

  2269. quiet

  2270. hour,

  2271. is the

  2272. critical

  2273. hour.

  2274. Accordingly,

  2275. he urges,

  2276. the best

  2277. thing to do,

  2278. therefore,

  2279. is promptly

  2280. to say to

  2281. yourself,

  2282. I will

  2283. promptly

  2284. begin

  2285. to prevent

  2286. myself from

  2287. forgetting,

  2288. promptly,

  2289. at this

  2290. very moment,

  2291. I promise

  2292. myself in

  2293. God,

  2294. even if it

  2295. is just

  2296. for the

  2297. next hour

  2298. or for

  2299. this very

  2300. day,

  2301. this long,

  2302. it shall

  2303. be certain

  2304. that I

  2305. shall not

  2306. forget.

  2307. That second

  2308. of the

  2309. critical hour.

  2310. So finally,

  2311. those were

  2312. five tips

  2313. to have

  2314. it taken,

  2315. and the

  2316. sixth,

  2317. final one,

  2318. be sensitive

  2319. to the

  2320. spirit.

  2321. Sometimes

  2322. when you

  2323. make lists,

  2324. it can

  2325. sound really

  2326. mechanical,

  2327. but at

  2328. the end,

  2329. this is not

  2330. a mechanical

  2331. thing,

  2332. it's a

  2333. relational

  2334. thing.

  2335. It's the

  2336. indwelling

  2337. spirit who's

  2338. in us,

  2339. who's

  2340. personal.

  2341. The spirit

  2342. speaks to

  2343. our soul.

  2344. You can

  2345. begin at

  2346. once to

  2347. be a

  2348. disciple of

  2349. the living

  2350. one,

  2351. writes

  2352. George

  2353. MacDonald,

  2354. by obeying

  2355. him in

  2356. the first

  2357. thing you

  2358. can think

  2359. of in

  2360. which you

  2361. are not

  2362. obeying

  2363. him.

  2364. We must

  2365. learn to

  2366. obey him

  2367. in

  2368. everything,

  2369. and so

  2370. must

  2371. begin

  2372. somewhere.

  2373. Let it

  2374. be at

  2375. once,

  2376. and in

  2377. the very

  2378. next thing

  2379. that lies

  2380. at the

  2381. door of

  2382. your

  2383. conscience.

  2384. That's

  2385. good.

  2386. So,

  2387. preparation,

  2388. meditation,

  2389. application,

  2390. and finally,

  2391. and briefly,

  2392. continuation.

  2393. Continuation,

  2394. verse 25,

  2395. and continues

  2396. in it.

  2397. And this

  2398. indicates

  2399. perseverance

  2400. in engaging

  2401. the scripture

  2402. and perseverance

  2403. in the

  2404. truths that

  2405. engagement

  2406. prompts.

  2407. Our

  2408. meditations

  2409. and applications

  2410. ought not

  2411. to be a

  2412. mere instance,

  2413. a spasm

  2414. or an

  2415. episode,

  2416. but rather

  2417. an abiding

  2418. lifestyle.

  2419. Keep at

  2420. it.

  2421. Keep at

  2422. it.

  2423. Here's

  2424. William Bates

  2425. writes,

  2426. if the

  2427. bird leaves

  2428. her nest

  2429. for a

  2430. long space,

  2431. the eggs

  2432. chill and

  2433. are not

  2434. fit for

  2435. production.

  2436. But where

  2437. there is

  2438. a constant

  2439. incubation,

  2440. then they

  2441. bring forth.

  2442. So,

  2443. when we

  2444. leave religious

  2445. duties for

  2446. a long

  2447. space,

  2448. our affections

  2449. will chill

  2450. and grow

  2451. cold,

  2452. and we

  2453. are not

  2454. fit to

  2455. produce

  2456. holiness

  2457. and comfort

  2458. to our

  2459. souls.

  2460. notice

  2461. verse 25,

  2462. not having

  2463. become,

  2464. but having

  2465. become.

  2466. So,

  2467. it is

  2468. your

  2469. continuation,

  2470. our

  2471. continuation

  2472. or failure

  2473. to continue,

  2474. which is

  2475. determining

  2476. what we

  2477. are becoming,

  2478. who we

  2479. are becoming.

  2480. This is

  2481. very sobering.

  2482. Okay?

  2483. Your

  2484. pattern,

  2485. my

  2486. pattern,

  2487. for good

  2488. your

  2489. ill,

  2490. will

  2491. become

  2492. my

  2493. character,

  2494. and finally,

  2495. your

  2496. destiny.

  2497. Remember the

  2498. parable of the

  2499. soils,

  2500. and that

  2501. chilling

  2502. utterance,

  2503. they were

  2504. only temporary.

  2505. They were only

  2506. temporary.

  2507. The only

  2508. adequate

  2509. response to

  2510. the word

  2511. is to

  2512. continue

  2513. in it.

  2514. but of

  2515. course,

  2516. to continue,

  2517. we must

  2518. first begin,

  2519. and I

  2520. conclude

  2521. these

  2522. reflections

  2523. and our

  2524. series on

  2525. scripture

  2526. with an

  2527. appeal to

  2528. you.

  2529. Oh,

  2530. friends,

  2531. will we

  2532. not commit

  2533. ourselves

  2534. with fresh

  2535. zeal

  2536. to engage

  2537. God's

  2538. word?

  2539. Would

  2540. not a

  2541. fitting

  2542. response

  2543. to what we

  2544. have considered

  2545. together

  2546. be a

  2547. re-energized

  2548. practice

  2549. of meditation

  2550. upon God's

  2551. word to

  2552. reinvigorate

  2553. a once

  2554. but perhaps

  2555. last fading

  2556. habit?

  2557. Or perhaps

  2558. not renewed

  2559. but a new

  2560. habit?

  2561. Either way,

  2562. would it

  2563. not be

  2564. fitting?

  2565. Well,

  2566. in the hope

  2567. that it may

  2568. be so,

  2569. may I propose

  2570. that we

  2571. give it a

  2572. try?

  2573. Shall we

  2574. stick our

  2575. toe in the

  2576. water together?

  2577. concretely,

  2578. just take

  2579. for your

  2580. portion

  2581. Psalm 1.

  2582. Psalm 1.

  2583. And spend

  2584. a dedicated

  2585. season.

  2586. Steal away

  2587. to an

  2588. undisturbed

  2589. place and

  2590. for an

  2591. hour of

  2592. unhurried

  2593. meditation

  2594. sometime

  2595. this week,

  2596. let us

  2597. discover if

  2598. God does

  2599. not richly

  2600. meet us

  2601. and graciously

  2602. work in

  2603. us what

  2604. is to

  2605. his great

  2606. pleasure

  2607. and ours

  2608. too.

  2609. Those things

  2610. wonderfully

  2611. come together

  2612. in the realm

  2613. of grace.

  2614. His good

  2615. pleasure

  2616. and our

  2617. good pleasure

  2618. come.

  2619. Let us

  2620. stick that

  2621. toe in the

  2622. ocean

  2623. together.

  2624. together.

  2625. Well,

  2626. team,

  2627. that concludes

  2628. our series.

  2629. Thank you

  2630. so much.

  2631. It's been

  2632. a joy and

  2633. I can't

  2634. wait for

  2635. the next

  2636. series that

  2637. we're going

  2638. to do on

  2639. who knows

  2640. what.

  2641. Any

  2642. questions?

  2643. That's for

  2644. the elders

  2645. to figure

  2646. out.

  2647. But you

  2648. guys can

  2649. always pitch

  2650. in some

  2651. requests.

  2652. Any

  2653. questions or

  2654. comments?

  2655. I know I've

  2656. run a little

  2657. bit late,

  2658. but it is

  2659. the last

  2660. time,

  2661. so forgive

  2662. me.

  2663. Questions,

  2664. comments?

  2665. Cavils,

  2666. scarves,

  2667. critiques,

  2668. too.

  2669. That's

  2670. always

  2671. fine.

  2672. One of

  2673. the reasons

  2674. why Luke's

  2675. telling of

  2676. the encounter

  2677. of Mary at

  2678. Jesus'

  2679. feet,

  2680. the house

  2681. of Mary

  2682. and Martha,

  2683. I think in

  2684. that moment

  2685. she realized

  2686. just how much

  2687. Christ was

  2688. meditating on

  2689. her and

  2690. gazing upon

  2691. her.

  2692. Yeah,

  2693. that's a

  2694. great point.

  2695. That's a

  2696. wonderful

  2697. thought.

  2698. As much

  2699. as we

  2700. do this,

  2701. as best

  2702. as we

  2703. can do

  2704. it,

  2705. he does

  2706. this even

  2707. more upon

  2708. me.

  2709. Yes,

  2710. it's a

  2711. wonderful

  2712. dynamic

  2713. that we

  2714. see.

  2715. As we

  2716. cling to

  2717. him,

  2718. his right

  2719. hand

  2720. upholds

  2721. us.

  2722. So as

  2723. we're

  2724. gazing at

  2725. him,

  2726. that gaze

  2727. is right

  2728. back,

  2729. and that's

  2730. what makes

  2731. it fruitful.

  2732. Absolutely

  2733. great,

  2734. thank you.

  2735. Yeah,

  2736. Susie.

  2737. So in

  2738. terms of

  2739. the

  2740. application

  2741. you mentioned

  2742. about asking

  2743. God,

  2744. what do you

  2745. want me to

  2746. know and

  2747. learn,

  2748. and what are

  2749. you trying to

  2750. teach me in

  2751. this season,

  2752. how do you

  2753. know if that

  2754. passage is

  2755. really?

  2756. Yeah.

  2757. Is where

  2758. you're going

  2759. to find

  2760. it?

  2761. Yeah.

  2762. Yeah,

  2763. yeah,

  2764. yeah.

  2765. So the

  2766. wonderful thing

  2767. about

  2768. providence

  2769. is God

  2770. is able

  2771. to direct

  2772. you.

  2773. Have you

  2774. not noticed

  2775. how when

  2776. you are

  2777. actually practicing

  2778. this and

  2779. you're

  2780. meditating,

  2781. you're

  2782. spending

  2783. time in

  2784. scripture,

  2785. how those,

  2786. what you

  2787. get in

  2788. scripture,

  2789. the things

  2790. that are

  2791. able to

  2792. impress

  2793. you,

  2794. maybe

  2795. even

  2796. inscribe

  2797. you,

  2798. become

  2799. for that

  2800. time a

  2801. lens through

  2802. which you

  2803. see everything

  2804. and how

  2805. those are

  2806. often the

  2807. very things

  2808. that God

  2809. wants you

  2810. to be able

  2811. to see

  2812. and he's

  2813. provided

  2814. those lenses

  2815. and so

  2816. providentially

  2817. he works

  2818. such that

  2819. where he

  2820. has guided

  2821. you in

  2822. scripture

  2823. and it

  2824. might seem

  2825. to be

  2826. completely

  2827. random

  2828. to you

  2829. where you're

  2830. just,

  2831. you know,

  2832. I haven't

  2833. read this

  2834. in a while,

  2835. let me just

  2836. read this

  2837. and God

  2838. can take

  2839. any number

  2840. of things

  2841. from his

  2842. scripture

  2843. and use

  2844. them particularly

  2845. for just

  2846. what our

  2847. need is

  2848. so we

  2849. leave it

  2850. to him

  2851. and in

  2852. some ways

  2853. when you

  2854. just go

  2855. to the

  2856. word

  2857. he is,

  2858. he is

  2859. picking,

  2860. even though

  2861. we pick

  2862. the spot

  2863. he'll pick

  2864. the truth

  2865. to impress

  2866. you and

  2867. the spirit

  2868. will do

  2869. that,

  2870. so you

  2871. just trust

  2872. him in

  2873. that,

  2874. don't worry

  2875. about oh

  2876. no I'm

  2877. looking in

  2878. the wrong

  2879. part of

  2880. the Bible,

  2881. if I don't

  2882. find just

  2883. the right

  2884. part God

  2885. can't speak

  2886. to me,

  2887. no no he

  2888. can,

  2889. he can

  2890. use all

  2891. of his

  2892. word to

  2893. do this,

  2894. sometimes it

  2895. takes years

  2896. to learn

  2897. the lesson,

  2898. it could

  2899. be that the

  2900. lesson is

  2901. patient,

  2902. you know,

  2903. that's right,

  2904. that's right,

  2905. that's right,

  2906. some of us

  2907. are on the

  2908. remedial

  2909. program,

  2910. I'd say,

  2911. I certainly

  2912. am,

  2913. I just don't

  2914. read the

  2915. Bible,

  2916. open it

  2917. up and

  2918. then point

  2919. and then

  2920. think this

  2921. is going

  2922. to speak

  2923. to me,

  2924. I never

  2925. read the

  2926. Bible,

  2927. yeah,

  2928. you know,

  2929. he says,

  2930. look,

  2931. don't be

  2932. like a

  2933. horse,

  2934. you know,

  2935. a horse

  2936. or a mule

  2937. with a bit

  2938. bridal spur,

  2939. you know,

  2940. in other words,

  2941. have some sort

  2942. of renewed

  2943. sanctified mind

  2944. and think

  2945. through these

  2946. things,

  2947. but here's

  2948. the good

  2949. news,

  2950. even if you

  2951. don't,

  2952. God can

  2953. still use

  2954. that,

  2955. even if you

  2956. do,

  2957. you know,

  2958. you flip

  2959. open the

  2960. Bible or if,

  2961. you know,

  2962. I'm not

  2963. particularly good,

  2964. you know,

  2965. we don't,

  2966. as elders,

  2967. we don't cast

  2968. lots,

  2969. you know,

  2970. we try to have

  2971. the mind of

  2972. Christ,

  2973. we don't cast

  2974. lots,

  2975. but you

  2976. know what,

  2977. you know,

  2978. if our hearts

  2979. were humble

  2980. and we were

  2981. really seeking

  2982. the Lord,

  2983. he could

  2984. direct us

  2985. through lots,

  2986. you know,

  2987. he did even

  2988. the choice

  2989. of an apostle,

  2990. you know,

  2991. so,

  2992. yeah,

  2993. there's a

  2994. nunnery in

  2995. southern France

  2996. and they've

  2997. written out

  2998. the entire

  2999. Bible on

  3000. little slips

  3001. of paper that

  3002. they have in

  3003. a huge

  3004. cauldron,

  3005. just one

  3006. verse at a

  3007. time,

  3008. and every

  3009. day,

  3010. you know,

  3011. the head

  3012. abbess,

  3013. she just

  3014. reaches in

  3015. and she

  3016. pulls out

  3017. one,

  3018. it's like a

  3019. fortune cookie,

  3020. you know,

  3021. but it's the

  3022. scripture,

  3023. you know,

  3024. it's the word,

  3025. and she

  3026. reads that

  3027. and they

  3028. approach their

  3029. whole day

  3030. in light of

  3031. that verse

  3032. and you think,

  3033. good grief,

  3034. surely there's a

  3035. more fruitful

  3036. way to,

  3037. you know,

  3038. discerning,

  3039. engage the word,

  3040. but that's what

  3041. they do and,

  3042. you know,

  3043. God blesses it.

  3044. He guides them

  3045. into some really

  3046. fruitful paths,

  3047. you know,

  3048. and contemplate

  3049. on Jesus

  3050. wept.

  3051. Yeah,

  3052. there you go,

  3053. yeah,

  3054. that's right,

  3055. that's right.

  3056. All right,

  3057. thank you team,

  3058. we will,

  3059. yeah,

  3060. I don't know

  3061. what's,

  3062. does anybody

  3063. know what

  3064. we're doing

  3065. next week?

  3066. I guess this is,

  3067. something's starting,

  3068. I'm sure we'll hear

  3069. it in the service,

  3070. I'm sure it'll be

  3071. announced in the

  3072. service.
