  1. Well, good morning, church. Would you turn with me to the Gospel of Mark, chapter 4, verses 1 through 25.

    Mark 4:1–25

  2. Our passage begins on page 787 in the Pew Bible.

  3. We will have it on the screens when I read it in just a second, but it would be good to have it open before you as we walk through our text this morning.

  4. Let me pray for us, and then I'll read.

  5. Father in heaven, how firm a foundation indeed we have in Jesus Christ, our Lord, and the word that he has authorized and inspired through your Holy Spirit.

  6. Lord, as we come to your word now, would you do this work of comforting, strengthening, convicting, converting, equipping, and glorifying your great name.

  7. Give us ears to hear, Father, what your Spirit is saying to us today.

  8. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

  9. All right, Mark, chapter 4, picking up in verse 1.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  10. 30-fold, 60-fold, and 100-fold.

  11. And he said, he who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  12. And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.

  13. And he said to them, to you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God.

  14. But for those outside, everything is in parables.

  15. So that they may indeed see, but not perceive.

  16. May indeed hear, but not understand.

  17. Lest they should turn and be forgiven.

  18. And he said to them, do you not understand this parable?

  19. How then will you understand all the parables?

  20. The sower sows the word.

  21. And these are the ones along the path where the word is sown.

  22. When they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.

  23. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground.

  24. The ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy.

  25. And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while.

  26. Then when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.

  27. And others are the ones sown among thorns.

  28. They are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches

  29. and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

  30. But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit

  31. thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.

  32. And he said to them, is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed and not on a stand?

  33. For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest,

  34. nor is anything secret except to come to light.

  35. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.

  36. And he said to them, pay attention to what you hear.

  37. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.

  38. For to the one who has, more will be given,

  39. and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

  40. So for a number of years, there have been articles and studies coming out saying,

  41. that human attention span, the human attention span, is dwindling, is dropping.

  42. Given social media, the always-on news cycle, constant interruptions and notifications hitting us through our smartphones and on and on,

  43. it seems that we're just more distractible than ever.

  44. In fact, one study in 2015 argued that people now generally lose concentration after eight seconds.

  45. I've already lost you in this sermon.

  46. Supposedly, according to this study, that's a shorter attention span than a goldfish.

  47. Now, that study didn't really hold up to scientific scrutiny.

  48. After all, how does one measure the attention span of a goldfish?

  49. But, you know, even if that particular article was discredited,

  50. the general observation seems true.

  51. Paying attention seems harder than ever.

  52. There's oh so much to distract us,

  53. and we are oh so used to being entertained.

  54. Combine those two things together, and sure enough,

  55. really zeroing in, really paying attention,

  56. it's hard.

  57. Unless, of course,

  58. something seems worth our attention.

  59. We've been watching a lot of baseball as a family lately,

  60. and I have to be honest,

  61. that is not something I ever thought I would say.

  62. Why?

  63. Because baseball is so boring.

  64. Unless,

  65. unless your team is in the World Series.

  66. And lo and behold,

  67. the Phillies made it to the World Series this year.

  68. They were in the World Series.

  69. And so, we've been glued to the TV,

  70. watching pitch after pitch of the world's slowest game.

  71. Why?

  72. Because we really wanted them to win.

  73. So, there we were,

  74. paying attention to baseball, of all things,

  75. because we think it's worth our attention.

  76. In our passage today,

  77. Jesus tells us a string of parables about hearing.

  78. Hearing and paying attention.

  79. Just glance through the passage for yourself.

  80. How many times do you find the word hear?

  81. I counted at least ten.

  82. Jesus says in verse 24,

  83. pay attention to what you hear.

  84. That's the big idea of this passage.

  85. Now, as we look at the context in the beginning of chapter four,

  86. we see again that great crowds have gathered.

  87. Many are attracted to Jesus and his ministry.

  88. And at this point, this has been happening for some time now.

  89. Many have been gathering, hearing,

  90. so much so at this point that Jesus has to find a place

  91. along the shore of Galilee that's a bit like a natural amphitheater,

  92. where he can sit on a boat on the water,

  93. and his voice can be carried up across the water,

  94. up in the surrounding cove into the hillside.

  95. And what does Jesus do here?

  96. At this moment, when the crowds are gathering,

  97. when he's become so much of a draw,

  98. when he's become so famous or infamous,

  99. that as we saw last week,

  100. his family thinks that he's out of his mind,

  101. and the religious authority are trying to explain it away,

  102. that he's demon-possessed.

  103. At this moment, what does Jesus do?

  104. With this great crowd.

  105. The crowds upon crowds that gather.

  106. Well, Jesus doesn't sort of stoke them into a fervor

  107. or applaud them for their enthusiasm.

  108. Instead, Jesus tells a parable about hearing,

  109. about paying attention to what you hear.

  110. Because, you see, it's not enough

  111. to just go along with the crowd,

  112. to be swept up in the enthusiasm.

  113. It's not enough to just come to church

  114. and enjoy the singing

  115. and enjoy the relationships.

  116. Jesus looks at us and he says,

  117. pay attention to what you hear.

  118. Now, let's look at why.

  119. Why does Jesus want to make this point?

  120. Well, first, what we see in our text

  121. is that Jesus says,

  122. pay attention to what you hear

  123. because it's the word that's being sown.

  124. Pay attention to what you hear

  125. because what's being sown is the word.

  126. Now, the first parable in our passage

  127. is what we often call the parable of the sower.

  128. Now, sowing here is not a needle-pulling thread, right?

  129. That's S-E-W.

  130. This is S-O-W.

  131. It's planting seed.

  132. The parable of the planter, of the sower.

  133. And in first century Palestine,

  134. this was done by literally taking handfuls of seed

  135. and just scattering it quite liberally across the field.

  136. Now, that practice might seem a little strange to us today,

  137. but that was normal in the first century.

  138. And as Jesus explains in verse 14,

  139. this is all a metaphor for the ministry of the word.

  140. In particular, Jesus' own ministry.

  141. He has come declaring the good news,

  142. the message, the word about the arrival of God's kingdom,

  143. ultimately in and through his own person and work.

  144. So you see, Jesus didn't come to give people

  145. seven steps for successful living

  146. or eight ways to conquer your biggest fears

  147. and achieve your wildest dreams, right?

  148. You probably wouldn't have found Jesus' teaching

  149. in the self-help section of the bookstore.

  150. The sower isn't sowing a bunch of good advice

  151. that you can try out and modify

  152. and paste onto your own life agenda.

  153. He's sowing the word, the news,

  154. the agenda-shattering message

  155. that God's kingdom is at hand,

  156. that God is breaking into enemy territory

  157. to reclaim what was lost

  158. and to set up his reign of freedom and joy

  159. in the place of sadness and death.

  160. And this news was just too important

  161. to gloss over or ignore or hold at arm's length

  162. or just be enthusiastic about,

  163. but not really hear.

  164. I think most people don't really give much attention

  165. to Christianity

  166. because they don't really think

  167. it's all that worth paying attention to.

  168. Often we misunderstand it

  169. as just another way of telling people

  170. to be moral.

  171. As if Christianity is just

  172. love your neighbor

  173. wrapped up in a bunch of religious beliefs

  174. that don't make much sense anymore.

  175. And if that's all that Christianity is,

  176. why pay attention to that?

  177. Do we really need all these religious beliefs

  178. to convince us to love our neighbors?

  179. But friends, Christianity is so much more than that.

  180. But aren't we guilty of this too

  181. inside the church?

  182. Do we really think it's worth our attention,

  183. this word, this news?

  184. Is it worth turning off the countless distractions

  185. and really hearing it?

  186. Really giving it our full attention

  187. as if life and death really depended on it?

  188. As if the message was not just

  189. one more moral exhortation

  190. to do better or to try harder,

  191. but a life-giving word

  192. like seed in the soil

  193. that creates new life from the inside out.

  194. Do we really know this message

  195. that's about a God so holy

  196. and beautiful

  197. that just to gaze upon Him

  198. would be either utter rapture

  199. or utter ruin?

  200. Rapture because of His inexpressible beauty,

  201. but ruin because we've offended Him

  202. and stand under God's perfect justice.

  203. What a predicament we're in as human beings.

  204. We long for the infinite,

  205. for beauty,

  206. for something that would ravish our souls,

  207. but that very thing

  208. we've offended and we stand over against

  209. so that to see God would destroy us.

  210. And yet this God

  211. beheld our miserable state

  212. and in love took our human nature.

  213. The righteous King

  214. took the rebel's place

  215. and Jesus Christ

  216. lived the life

  217. that we should have lived

  218. and died the death

  219. that we deserve to die

  220. so that all of our sins

  221. could be forgiven

  222. and we could be granted

  223. eternal life

  224. and be reborn by His Spirit

  225. and live a whole new life

  226. in the midst of this life

  227. for His kingdom

  228. and His praise,

  229. no longer standing

  230. under God's wrath,

  231. but in the freedom

  232. of God's favor and acceptance.

  233. repentance.

  234. Pay attention to what you hear,

  235. Jesus says,

  236. because it's the word

  237. that's being sown.

  238. But this leads us

  239. to our second point.

  240. Jesus says,

  241. pay attention to what you hear

  242. because there are many

  243. who fail to do so.

  244. Pay attention to what you hear

  245. because there are many

  246. who fail to do so.

  247. In verse 10 of our passage,

  248. the scene sort of cuts

  249. from the crowds

  250. by the lake

  251. to a scene

  252. to a later scene

  253. when it's just Jesus

  254. with the 12 apostles

  255. along with the other disciples

  256. and they ask Jesus,

  257. they ask Him,

  258. Jesus,

  259. why are you speaking

  260. in all of these parables?

  261. And Jesus gives

  262. a very surprising answer

  263. because up to this point

  264. in Mark's gospel,

  265. Jesus' illustrations

  266. and His parables

  267. have been used

  268. to try to help people

  269. get the point.

  270. Remember Jesus talking

  271. about the physician

  272. who doesn't come

  273. for the healthy

  274. but for the sick.

  275. Or remember Jesus talking

  276. about the wedding guests

  277. who aren't going to fast

  278. as long as the bridegroom

  279. is with them.

  280. Or the new cloth

  281. that shouldn't be sewed

  282. onto an old shirt.

  283. Or the new wine

  284. that shouldn't be put

  285. into old wineskins.

  286. Jesus used all of these

  287. quick parabolic sayings

  288. to help people

  289. get the point.

  290. To sort of rattle them

  291. out of their complacency

  292. and to help them see.

  293. But the parable

  294. of the sower

  295. isn't exactly like that.

  296. The parable of the sower

  297. is a solemn warning.

  298. Consider again this moment

  299. in Jesus' ministry.

  300. There were crowds

  301. upon crowds

  302. who were content

  303. to just listen to Jesus

  304. on the hillside

  305. and maybe see a few miracles

  306. and get caught up

  307. maybe in the enthusiasm

  308. but who refused

  309. to really come to him.

  310. They had been listening

  311. but not really hearing.

  312. Not really heeding

  313. what they heard.

  314. And that's why Jesus

  315. makes the distinction

  316. he makes in verse 11.

  317. He says to his disciples,

  318. he says,

  319. to you,

  320. that is to you

  321. who've come to me,

  322. to you has been given

  323. the secret

  324. of the kingdom of God.

  325. Now secret here

  326. is a bit of a technical word

  327. in the New Testament

  328. that means revealed truth.

  329. That is,

  330. it's something

  331. that you can't figure out

  332. on your own

  333. but God has to make it known.

  334. God has to reveal it to us.

  335. And for those

  336. who have entered

  337. into a relationship

  338. with Jesus,

  339. who have moved

  340. from being a casual observer

  341. in the crowd

  342. to really hearing

  343. and following him,

  344. Jesus says,

  345. God has revealed to you

  346. the truth about the kingdom.

  347. And what is it?

  348. Well ultimately,

  349. as Mark is unfolding

  350. before us

  351. that the kingdom,

  352. the secret of the kingdom,

  353. the revealed truth

  354. of the kingdom

  355. is that the kingdom

  356. is ultimately found

  357. in Jesus,

  358. the king.

  359. But notice the distinction

  360. Jesus then makes.

  361. He says,

  362. but for those

  363. on the outside,

  364. that is those

  365. who refuse

  366. to come to him,

  367. everything is in parables.

  368. It all remains

  369. hidden to them.

  370. And in fact,

  371. Jesus even seems

  372. to be saying

  373. in verse 12

  374. that the parable

  375. of the sower

  376. functions like

  377. a judgment

  378. on their hard hearts.

  379. Because they have

  380. refused to come

  381. to Jesus

  382. after all this time,

  383. Jesus tells them

  384. a parable

  385. about their own

  386. refusal

  387. to really,

  388. truly hear.

  389. He confronts them

  390. in cryptic

  391. picture form

  392. with their own

  393. spiritual state.

  394. How about you,

  395. friend?

  396. Are you like

  397. the seed

  398. on the path?

  399. You hear it

  400. and it just

  401. doesn't make

  402. any impact.

  403. It just

  404. immediately

  405. snatched away.

  406. Don't you see

  407. the spiritual danger

  408. that you're in?

  409. Or are you like

  410. the seed

  411. sown on rocky ground?

  412. Maybe you like

  413. what you hear,

  414. but there's no depth.

  415. There's no real

  416. engagement.

  417. At the first sign

  418. of hardship,

  419. you'll fall away.

  420. Or are you like

  421. the seed

  422. among the thorns?

  423. You've listened

  424. for a while.

  425. You go through

  426. the motions.

  427. Some might even

  428. look at you and say,

  429. wow, you're really

  430. growing.

  431. But the real love

  432. of your life

  433. isn't the Lord.

  434. It's the world.

  435. It's career.

  436. It's wealth.

  437. It's friendships.

  438. And there's really

  439. no lasting fruit

  440. in your life.

  441. is Jesus

  442. telling this parable

  443. to you

  444. to warn you,

  445. to wake you up

  446. before it's too late.

  447. We don't have

  448. all the time

  449. in the world

  450. to make up our minds

  451. where we stand

  452. with Christ.

  453. We can't continue

  454. to hold him

  455. at arm's length

  456. forever and ever.

  457. We must decide.

  458. Will we stay

  459. outside in the crowd

  460. or will we come in?

  461. Will we surrender

  462. our lives to him

  463. as our king,

  464. as our loving Lord?

  465. In verse 21,

  466. Jesus changes

  467. the metaphor

  468. as he kind of

  469. presses the parable

  470. of the sower home.

  471. In verse 21,

  472. he changes the metaphor

  473. and he speaks

  474. of a lamp.

  475. And literally,

  476. that verse reads,

  477. does the lamp

  478. come in

  479. to be put

  480. under a basket?

  481. Does the lamp

  482. come in

  483. to be put

  484. under a basket?

  485. And again,

  486. Jesus is speaking

  487. here of himself.

  488. He is the light.

  489. He is the lamp

  490. entering the world.

  491. And though he may

  492. be hidden now,

  493. as verse 22 says,

  494. that's not how

  495. it will be forever.

  496. The lamp

  497. doesn't go in

  498. to stay under the bed,

  499. but to light up

  500. the whole house.

  501. Christ might seem

  502. veiled now,

  503. but it won't be

  504. so forever.

  505. One day,

  506. the glory of Christ

  507. will be clear

  508. for everyone to see.

  509. When he returns

  510. in splendor,

  511. what seems so hidden

  512. now will be uncovered.

  513. The king in all his glory

  514. will be unmistakable.

  515. And where will you

  516. find yourself

  517. on that day?

  518. When the God

  519. of glory comes

  520. to finally

  521. and fully

  522. reclaim his creation.

  523. And his glory

  524. covers the earth

  525. like the waters

  526. cover the sea.

  527. that glory

  528. that is rapture

  529. or ruin.

  530. Where will you

  531. find yourself

  532. on that day?

  533. Still in the crowds?

  534. Still on the hillside?

  535. Still among the shallow rocks?

  536. Still chasing the world

  537. and its passing pleasures?

  538. Friend,

  539. if that is you,

  540. don't let another hour

  541. go by

  542. in such a dangerous

  543. spiritual state.

  544. Take Christ

  545. as your king,

  546. as your light,

  547. as your all.

  548. Believe that he is

  549. God in the flesh,

  550. crucified for your sins,

  551. risen for your life,

  552. seated and reigning

  553. at the Father's right hand,

  554. ready to receive

  555. in mercy

  556. all who come to him.

  557. Pay attention

  558. to what you hear

  559. because there are many

  560. who fail to do so.

  561. Let that not be you today.

  562. But there's one last point

  563. Jesus makes here

  564. in our passage.

  565. Pay attention

  566. to what you hear,

  567. Jesus says,

  568. because those who do

  569. will flourish

  570. beyond measure.

  571. Pay attention

  572. to what you hear

  573. because those who do

  574. will flourish

  575. beyond measure.

  576. You see,

  577. the parable of the sower

  578. isn't just a warning.

  579. It's also a promise.

  580. It's not just a parable

  581. about the many

  582. who fail to hear

  583. and receive this word.

  584. It's also a parable

  585. about the power

  586. of this word

  587. that despite

  588. all the obstacles

  589. it faces,

  590. despite all the obstacles

  591. the word faces

  592. from the world

  593. and our own flesh

  594. and the evil one,

  595. that still the word

  596. will achieve

  597. its saving purpose

  598. in those who hear.

  599. What an encouragement

  600. this parable

  601. must have been

  602. to the early church

  603. as they brought

  604. the gospel

  605. to a new city,

  606. to a new place

  607. and as they sadly

  608. saw some

  609. simply ignore it

  610. altogether,

  611. as they saw some

  612. quickly fall away,

  613. as they saw some

  614. profess belief

  615. but then chase

  616. after the world

  617. as if nothing

  618. had changed.

  619. What an encouragement

  620. this parable

  621. must have been.

  622. An assurance

  623. from Jesus himself

  624. that the word

  625. will find good soil

  626. and it will produce

  627. a harvest

  628. and it will create

  629. new life

  630. and it will flourish

  631. beyond measure

  632. thirtyfold,

  633. sixtyfold,

  634. a hundredfold.

  635. And this parable

  636. should still

  637. encourage us today.

  638. The gospel

  639. is the power

  640. of God

  641. for salvation

  642. to those who believe

  643. and we know

  644. that our great God

  645. has set his saving love

  646. on a countless

  647. multitude

  648. from every tribe

  649. and tongue

  650. and nation

  651. and city

  652. who will hear the word,

  653. accept it,

  654. and bear fruit.

  655. So don't lose heart,

  656. brothers and sisters.

  657. But this parable

  658. is not just

  659. an encouragement

  660. for our witness.

  661. It's an encouragement

  662. to keep on hearing.

  663. In verses 24 and 25,

  664. Jesus again supplements

  665. the parable of the sower

  666. with what we might call

  667. the parable of the measure.

  668. He says,

  669. pay attention

  670. to what you hear.

  671. With the measure you use,

  672. it will be measured to you

  673. and still more

  674. will be added to you.

  675. The degree

  676. to which you give yourself

  677. to engaging

  678. with this word

  679. is the degree

  680. to which you will grow in it.

  681. To be clear,

  682. Jesus is not teaching

  683. works righteousness here.

  684. We are saved by grace

  685. from first to last.

  686. Rather,

  687. Jesus is teaching us

  688. a principle

  689. of the spiritual life.

  690. And even this principle

  691. of the spiritual life

  692. is overflowing

  693. with God's grace.

  694. Notice,

  695. Jesus says,

  696. with the measure you use,

  697. it will be measured to you

  698. and still more

  699. will be added to you.

  700. For the Christian,

  701. growth in Christ-likeness

  702. is more than just

  703. proportionate

  704. with our engagement

  705. with Christ and his word.

  706. It's super abundant.

  707. So,

  708. brothers and sisters,

  709. do we hear it

  710. when it is preached?

  711. And do we meditate upon it

  712. when it is read?

  713. And do we apply it

  714. when it is understood?

  715. If we pay attention

  716. to what we hear,

  717. Jesus promises,

  718. the growth will be abundant.

  719. Brothers,

  720. sisters,

  721. are you longing for peace?

  722. Jesus has revealed himself

  723. as the prince of peace.

  724. So seek him in his word.

  725. Are you longing for strength

  726. to endure,

  727. to run the race?

  728. Jesus is the almighty one.

  729. Seek him in his word.

  730. Do you long for wisdom?

  731. Jesus is the one

  732. in whom are hidden

  733. all the treasures

  734. of wisdom and knowledge.

  735. Seek him in his word.

  736. The measure you use,

  737. it will be added to you

  738. and still more

  739. will be added to you.

  740. You will come looking

  741. for wisdom

  742. and Christ will also

  743. make you patient.

  744. You will come looking

  745. and longing for strength

  746. and Christ will also

  747. make you compassionate.

  748. You'll come looking

  749. for peace

  750. and Christ will also

  751. give you a passion

  752. for his glory

  753. and still more

  754. will be added to you.

  755. Are you willing

  756. to put this promise

  757. to the test?

  758. How will you engage

  759. with God's word

  760. this week?

  761. What is one way

  762. you can take

  763. this promise to heart

  764. and let God demonstrate

  765. his faithfulness to you?

  766. We started out

  767. by saying how much

  768. distraction technology

  769. has produced in our lives.

  770. But you know,

  771. we also live in a time

  772. when we have more access

  773. to God's word

  774. than ever before.

  775. Why not listen

  776. to a Sunday school class

  777. you may have missed?

  778. Put yourself

  779. under the teaching

  780. of God's word

  781. this week.

  782. Why not download

  783. a prayer app?

  784. There are lots

  785. of good ones out there.

  786. And put yourself

  787. under the meaningful

  788. prayer of God's word

  789. this week.

  790. If you don't have

  791. a regular pattern

  792. of reading God's word,

  793. start this week.

  794. You can pick up

  795. reading the gospel

  796. of Mark.

  797. That's a good place

  798. to start.

  799. Read slowly

  800. and ask God

  801. to reveal more

  802. of himself to you

  803. and how you might

  804. keep in step

  805. with his spirit

  806. this week.

  807. How will you

  808. take God

  809. at his promise

  810. this week?

  811. Pay attention

  812. to what you hear

  813. because those

  814. who do,

  815. Jesus says,

  816. will flourish

  817. beyond measure.

  818. Let's pray.

  819. Lord,

  820. we pause

  821. before you

  822. and we acknowledge

  823. that in these moments

  824. when we sit

  825. before you

  826. and your word,

  827. a great spiritual

  828. battle is taking

  829. place

  830. between our proud

  831. hearts

  832. that want to do

  833. things our own way

  834. and your mighty grace

  835. that wants to capture

  836. our hearts

  837. and make us new.

  838. So, Lord,

  839. we pray that the power

  840. of your word

  841. would be at work

  842. converting us,

  843. drawing us to faith,

  844. growing us

  845. and changing us.

  846. God,

  847. how we long

  848. to be a church

  849. where we see

  850. this growth,

  851. not just in number,

  852. God,

  853. but in depth

  854. to see our own lives

  855. flourish

  856. 30,

  857. 60,

  858. 100-fold

  859. with the character

  860. of Christ.

  861. Oh, Lord,

  862. we acknowledge

  863. that we're utterly

  864. dependent on your spirit

  865. to do that work.

  866. So,

  867. would you do it,

  868. we pray,

  869. for Christ's sake.

  870. Amen.
