  1. It's so terrifying that God will unleash the fury

  2. that many will face the mountains and rocks,

  3. fall on us and hide us from the face of him

  4. who is seated on the throne.

  5. The wrath of the Lamb, as the Revelation says.

  6. Man is in utter rebellion against God.

  7. Who can deny it?

  8. And countless other things we have not mentioned here.

  9. It's in all of us.

  10. And who really is in control?

  11. God or the devil?

  12. Does God fail to accomplish his purposes

  13. because of evident human rebellion?

  14. Put this back on.

  15. So how do we account for the sheer quantity of evil

  16. and calamities in the world?

  17. Many Christians want to take God off the hook

  18. for evil and calamities.

  19. And they rightly see that sin vandalizes God's good creation.

  20. Sin affects creation itself.

  21. Like putting graffiti on a beautiful painting in the Louvre.

  22. God is not only the king, he is the judge.

  23. People recognize that.

  24. And many women will one day give an account

  25. before the judgment seat of Christ.

  26. And with this we must all agree.

  27. But in arguing of how to understand evil in the world,

  28. some want to say God cannot prevent evil

  29. because that would destroy our freedom

  30. to choose good and evil.

  31. He just kind of rolls the dice and hopes for the best.

  32. And humans have the power to choose good and evil.

  33. And because it's up to us,

  34. he can clean up the mess afterward,

  35. but he is helpless to prevent it.

  36. Our freedom is so valuable

  37. that he's willing to pay the price of human suffering.

  38. And God cannot prevent evil.

  39. After the tsunami in Southeast Asia,

  40. a Christian was asked this,

  41. whether God had anything to do with a disaster.

  42. No, he replied.

  43. This question has to do with geology, not theology.

  44. So putting aside the profound theological statement

  45. that person's making in that statement,

  46. I want to say the scripture has much to say to us

  47. about this topic.

  48. And the scripture appears to cut in a different direction

  49. than that statement.

  50. Isaiah 45, verse 7,

    Isaiah 45:7

  51. The same God who is good,

  52. in which there is no darkness,

  53. says to the people,

  54. I form the light and create darkness.

  55. I bring prosperity and create disaster.

  56. I, the Lord, do all these things.

  57. And Daniel 4, 35,

  58. up here,

  59. says,

  60. All the inhabitants of the earth

  61. are accounted as nothing,

  62. and he does according to his will

  63. among the hosts of heaven

  64. and among the inhabitants of the earth,

  65. and none can stay his hand or say to him,

  66. What have you done?

  67. In the midst of severe misfortune,

  68. including winds which swept in

  69. and caused the collapse of a house,

  70. killing all the young inside,

  71. Job refused to curse God.

  72. He says,

  73. Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?

  74. In surveying the ruins of Jerusalem,

  75. Jeremiah asked,

  76. Is it not from the mouth of the Most High

  77. that both calamities and good things come?

  78. So in the scripture,

  79. when suffering happens,

  80. I think pastorally the writers of scripture

  81. want to draw our attention to God's sovereignty.

  82. The disciples asked Jesus,

  83. Who sinned,

  84. this blind man or his parents?

  85. Jesus answered,

  86. Neither,

  87. but that the works of God

  88. might be displayed in him.

  89. So we know the creation is cursed

  90. because sin creates disabilities

  91. like blindness.

  92. God created everything and called it good.

  93. There was no blindness before sin.

  94. But this man's blindness was no accident,

  95. according to Jesus.

  96. He was born blind

  97. because God had a purpose for this man,

  98. that he would have a chance to glorify him

  99. through his suffering.

  100. And one of the priceless truths,

  101. the pillow we can lay our heads on at night,

  102. is the truth of God's sovereignty.

  103. All things are under God's rule and control,

  104. and nothing happens without his direction or permission.

  105. God doesn't work some things out,

  106. but all things out,

  107. according to the counsel of his will.

  108. And this is good news for us,

  109. that God controls every molecule,

  110. atom,

  111. even the smallest subatomic particle

  112. unseen by the most powerful microscope on earth.

  113. Something that the human eye has never seen,

  114. God is in control of those things.

  115. From the forces of nature, we'll see,

  116. to the rise and fall of nations,

  117. over good and evil,

  118. even the deeply painful events in our lives.

  119. God is in control.

  120. And so this means your suffering is not meaningless.

  121. We will see.

  122. And Christian, though you can't see it now,

  123. one day you will see

  124. that God is working out these painful things for our good.

  125. And my hope and prayer is that

  126. by the end of our time together,

  127. we will see God's sovereignty

  128. as the bedrock of our trust,

  129. and God's sovereignty would lead us to rest

  130. in the fatherly hand of God.

  131. So let's begin with,

  132. what do we mean when we say sovereignty of God?

  133. Well, a sovereign is a ruler, a lord.

  134. To discuss the sovereignty of God

  135. is to discuss his lordship, his kingship.

  136. A.W. Tozer defines it as,

  137. God's sovereignty is the attribute

  138. by which he rules his entire creation.

  139. And to be sovereign,

  140. God must be all-knowing, all-powerful,

  141. and absolutely free.

  142. The word Yahweh in the Old Testament

  143. expresses this sovereign rule.

  144. The name revealed to Moses at the burning bush.

  145. I am who I am.

  146. He depends on no one.

  147. He always was and always will be.

  148. And the word Lord, Yahweh,

  149. is found 7,000 times in the Old Testament.

  150. He is the King of kings,

  151. the Lord of lords,

  152. the great, the mighty, and the awesome God.

  153. Psalm 115, verse 3,

    Psalms 115:3

  154. Our God is in the heavens.

  155. He does all that he pleases.

  156. And the prefix omni means all.

  157. So he is omnipotent.

  158. He is all-powerful.

  159. Omniscient.

  160. He knows everything.

  161. You combine all the knowledge

  162. by all the people at Yale,

  163. and it is comparable to a kindergarten reading lesson

  164. compared to what God knows.

  165. He knows everything there is to know.

  166. Omnipresent.

  167. Scripture says he's everywhere.

  168. You go 36,000 feet to the bottom of the ocean,

  169. God is there,

  170. if you aren't crushed by the pressure.

  171. So we see this as the premise of God in the Exodus.

  172. It was God, not Pharaoh,

  173. who reigns over all things.

  174. Exodus 3, verse 19 to 20,

    Exodus 3:19–20

  175. But I know that the king of Egypt

  176. will not let you go

  177. unless compelled by a mighty hand,

  178. so I will stretch out my hand

  179. and strike Egypt

  180. with all the wonders that I will do in it.

  181. After that, he will let you go.

  182. The sovereignty of God means

  183. God as a king is in control of the world.

  184. He is in control of Pharaoh.

  185. And to what purpose does God exercise his sovereignty?

  186. Well, God tells the Israelites in the Exodus,

  187. So that the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord

  188. when I stretch out my hand against Egypt

  189. to bring out the people of Israel from among them.

  190. God does everything for his own glory.

  191. So think of God speaking to Isaiah,

  192. Bring my sons from afar

  193. and my daughters from the ends of the earth,

  194. everyone who is called by my name,

  195. whom I created for my glory.

  196. We have been created to display the glory of God.

  197. Like a master painter

  198. whose canvas is the entire universe,

  199. he governs every detail to bring himself glory.

  200. And one day the earth will be filled

  201. with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord

  202. as the waters cover the sea,

  203. as Sabaccic says.

  204. So how does the scripture portray

  205. the sovereignty of God?

  206. So we'll begin with the macro

  207. and then we'll narrow down to the micro

  208. as it hits closer to home.

  209. So first, God is sovereign

  210. over the decisions of nations.

  211. Over the decisions of nations.

  212. Proverbs 21, verse 1.

    Proverbs 21:1

  213. The king's heart is a stream of water

  214. in the hand of the Lord.

  215. He turns it wherever he will.

  216. He controls kings.

  217. He has unlimited power.

  218. He has the power to summon a king

  219. to pound swiftly and destroy another nation.

  220. And that's precisely what he did

  221. when he summoned Cyrus and Isaiah

  222. to crush Babylon.

  223. Isaiah 46.

  224. I am God and there is no other.

  225. I am God and there's none like me,

  226. declaring the end from the beginning.

  227. And from ancient times,

  228. things not yet done,

  229. saying,

  230. My counsel shall stand

  231. and I will accomplish all my purpose.

  232. Calling a bird of prey from the east,

  233. a man of my counsel from a far country.

  234. I have spoken and I will bring it to pass.

  235. I have purposed and I will do it.

  236. And that bird of prey that God is referring to

  237. is him summoning Cyrus, the king of Persia,

  238. to abruptly and swiftly conquer Babylon

  239. and liberate the Jews from captivity.

  240. God is sovereign over the very fortunes of nations

  241. over Syria and Babylon and Persia.

  242. He is sovereign over Russian tanks coming into Ukraine.

  243. He is sovereign over Vladimir Putin and Zelensky.

  244. He is sovereign over China and Taiwan,

  245. over North Korea and South Korea, Lithuania.

  246. He is sovereign over the elections in the United States,

  247. the polar bears and the penguins in Antarctica.

  248. He reigns supreme as the king over all the nations

  249. and his purposes always prevail.

  250. When he stretches out his hand,

  251. there is none to turn him back

  252. because there is no one over him and beside him.

  253. So we see God is sovereign over the decisions of nations.

  254. And second, God is sovereign over calamities,

  255. over calamities.

  256. We saw this previously in Job's life.

  257. And also besides that,

  258. who sent the flood during Noah's time?

  259. God is not making a point of meteorology, but theology.

  260. Genesis 6, verse 17,

    Genesis 6:17

  261. I'm about to cover the earth with a flood

  262. that will destroy every living thing that breathes.

  263. Everything on earth will die.

  264. God wants them to know ahead of time

  265. who sends the storm.

  266. He is the God of the storm.

  267. He judges sin.

  268. And he will send the storm to judge the nations.

  269. He is sovereign even over calamities.

  270. Who sent the plagues in Egypt?

  271. In Exodus 9,

  272. God brings a terrible hailstorm upon the Egyptians,

  273. but he leaves one area untouched,

  274. the land of Goshen,

  275. where the Israelites lived.

  276. He makes distinctions in the plagues

  277. through natural events.

  278. And for what purpose?

  279. Again, God says,

  280. the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord.

  281. He does it so that they know

  282. that he is king in control,

  283. even of nature itself.

  284. And at his word,

  285. the sun stood still so Joshua could win the battle.

  286. According to Genesis,

  287. he sends famine.

  288. The disciples said to Jesus,

  289. what kind of man is this?

  290. Even the winds in the sea obey him.

  291. God is in control of the weather,

  292. even over calamities.

  293. And do you remember that terrifying episode

  294. of the sons of Korah in the book of Numbers?

  295. Do you remember the sons of Korah

  296. were rebellious men,

  297. challenging the authority of Moses and Aaron

  298. as God's appointed leaders?

  299. And Moses in number 16 says,

  300. if they die a natural death,

  301. then the Lord has not sent me.

  302. But if the Lord opens up the earth

  303. and swallows them up

  304. with everything that belongs to them

  305. and they go alive into the realm of the dead,

  306. then you will know that these men

  307. have treated the Lord with contempt.

  308. And what happened?

  309. As soon as Moses was done talking,

  310. the earth split open and swallowed them up

  311. and the earth closed over them.

  312. What an awesome and mighty God.

  313. He can send the earthquake

  314. to swallow up rebels.

  315. And we can say with the psalmist,

  316. be still and know that I am God.

  317. I will be exalted among the nations.

  318. I will be exalted in the earth.

  319. And God reveals himself in nature

  320. so that we will know his power.

  321. And God is sovereign even over calamities.

  322. Wow.

  323. God is not only sovereign over calamities

  324. and nations,

  325. God is sovereign even over circumstances,

  326. even if evil is being done to us.

  327. You recall that well-known passage

  328. in Joseph's life,

  329. at the end of his life,

  330. in Genesis 50, verse 20?

    Genesis 50:20

  331. As for you,

  332. you meant evil against me,

  333. but God meant it for good.

  334. To bring it that many people

  335. should be kept alive as they are today.

  336. You meant evil against me,

  337. but God meant it for good.

  338. Joseph had been sold into slavery

  339. because of his malice and hatred.

  340. Was a heinous evil done to Joseph?

  341. Yes.

  342. Yes, it was.

  343. It was very evil.

  344. Was God sovereign over those circumstances?

  345. Yes.

  346. God was sovereign.

  347. And what was God's purpose?

  348. That the people should be kept alive.

  349. Ultimately, God is preserving the line of Abraham.

  350. Right?

  351. And all the nations of the earth

  352. would be blessed through the line of Abraham.

  353. Through Joseph's suffering,

  354. God keeps his promises.

  355. And think for a moment with me.

  356. Think of Joseph's life.

  357. An innocent man,

  358. even if unwise,

  359. with his rainbow coat,

  360. who was loved by his father, Jacob,

  361. stripped of his rainbow coat,

  362. betrayed by his brothers

  363. for 20 pieces of silver,

  364. falsely accused by Potiphar's wife

  365. and thrown into a pit with criminals.

  366. But through his suffering,

  367. he saves his people from death.

  368. Through his suffering,

  369. God ultimately delivers his people from famine.

  370. And Joseph takes a Gentile bride

  371. and he is exalted at the right hand of Pharaoh.

  372. And his brothers bow down before him.

  373. And he intercedes before Pharaoh

  374. on behalf of his family.

  375. And ultimately,

  376. he will extend kindness and forgiveness

  377. to those who betrayed him.

  378. Through Joseph's life,

  379. suffering and exaltation in Egypt,

  380. God, he keeps his promises.

  381. Now, does that story sound familiar to you at all?

  382. Does that ring an echo

  383. of a greater story in the Bible?

  384. And God will actually orchestrate Joseph's life

  385. to be a shadow of the greater Messiah

  386. who would come to rescue his people.

  387. Not from famine,

  388. but from God's white-hot judgment against sin.

  389. And Jesus, fully God and fully man,

  390. was rejected.

  391. Even though he had committed no evil,

  392. he never sinned.

  393. Not even for a millisecond.

  394. Jesus was betrayed for 30 pieces of silver,

  395. falsely accused,

  396. and suffered at the hands of Pontius Pilate,

  397. stripped of his robe,

  398. and crucified next to two criminals,

  399. and then was raised to the right hand of the Father

  400. and now intercedes for us

  401. to deliver us from death and judgment,

  402. taking for himself a bride from the nations.

  403. That sounds like Joseph's life.

  404. Not one-to-one,

  405. but there are echoes

  406. of how Joseph was a signpost for Christ.

  407. Now, were the details of Joseph's life an accident?

  408. Well, clearly not.

  409. Clearly not.

  410. If you've been at Trinity long enough,

  411. you've heard Christ preach from the Old Testament.

  412. And examples like this abound.

  413. And for those who came to the biblical theology class

  414. last year,

  415. you know that this is called typology.

  416. And typologies are shadows in the Old Testament

  417. wherein Christ is the reality.

  418. And this is the hermeneutical framework

  419. that the apostles used in the New Testament

  420. to interpret events and people

  421. and foreshadowing the work of Christ and the Messiah.

  422. And this way of interpreting the Old Testament

  423. assumes that God is sovereign over all of history,

  424. even the small details.

  425. And God isn't just controlled generally,

  426. but meticulously controlled.

  427. And the supreme example of this

  428. is the cross of Christ.

  429. Jesus' death is a result of events outside his control,

  430. even when evil is done to him.

  431. God superintends every detail

  432. precisely for his glory.

  433. Everything that happened on Good Friday

  434. was a fulfillment of Scripture, wasn't it?

  435. Peter says as much while preaching in Jerusalem

  436. after the resurrection.

  437. Acts 2.

  438. This Jesus delivered up to the,

  439. according to the definite plan

  440. and fuller knowledge of God,

  441. you crucified and killed

  442. by the hands of lawless men.

  443. So according to Peter,

  444. was a heinous evil done to Jesus?

  445. Yes.

  446. The Lord of glory was crucified

  447. and killed by the hands of lawless men.

  448. An innocent man was condemned.

  449. A heinous evil

  450. was God's sovereign over those circumstances.

  451. Yes.

  452. He was delivered up to the definite plan

  453. and fuller knowledge of God,

  454. according to Peter.

  455. So the cross was not plan B

  456. after human beings messed it up

  457. according to our sin,

  458. but it was God's plan A.

  459. The cross was God's plan

  460. from eternity past.

  461. Revelation says,

  462. in the mind of God,

  463. the lamb was slain

  464. from the foundation of the world.

  465. But he accomplishes his purpose

  466. through the hands of the sinful mob

  467. who yelled,

  468. crucify him,

  469. crucify him.

  470. So we were in that crowd.

  471. We sinned with them.

  472. We wanted to crucify the Lord of glory,

  473. but through the sinful acts

  474. of men and women,

  475. God accomplishes his plan of redemption.

  476. Just like in Joseph's life.

  477. The precise details,

  478. in Matthew chapter 26,

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  479. will say,

  480. all this has taken place

  481. so that the scriptures

  482. might be fulfilled.

  483. The precise details

  484. were fulfilling the scriptures.

  485. Judas, a close friend,

  486. betrayed by Jesus,

  487. fulfilled Psalm 41.

  488. The Pharisees selling Jesus

  489. for 30 pieces of silver.

  490. And then Judas,

  491. using that to buy a field,

  492. God then moves Judas

  493. to return the blood money

  494. in fulfillment of the prophecy

  495. in Jeremiah and Zechariah,

  496. as Matthew tells us.

  497. So all the precise details,

  498. we can go to Isaiah 53.

  499. He was pierced for our transgression.

  500. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  501. All the details

  502. are precisely,

  503. sovereignly ordained by God.

  504. And all the attributes of God

  505. meet at the cross.

  506. The supremacy of his grace.

  507. The supremacy of his kindness

  508. towards sinners.

  509. The supremacy of his holiness

  510. and wrath against sin.

  511. Both are there.

  512. As Jesus, the Lamb of God,

  513. hangs as our substitute,

  514. the line of Judah

  515. shows his supreme strength.

  516. And the king is crucified

  517. willingly.

  518. Nothing external held him there,

  519. but he willingly laid his life down

  520. and was condemned

  521. and submitting himself

  522. to the Father.

  523. And so,

  524. God is sovereign

  525. even over circumstances,

  526. even if evil

  527. is being done to us.

  528. And in no way

  529. does that diminish

  530. human responsibility

  531. for sin and evil.

  532. And so D.A. Carson

  533. makes this point.

  534. God is absolutely sovereign.

  535. Yet his sovereignty

  536. does not diminish

  537. human responsibility

  538. and accountability.

  539. Human beings

  540. are morally responsible creatures.

  541. Yet this fact

  542. in no way jeopardizes

  543. the sovereignty of God.

  544. At Calvary,

  545. all Christians

  546. have to concede

  547. the truth

  548. of these two statements

  549. or they give up

  550. their claim

  551. to be Christians.

  552. So we must affirm them both.

  553. God's sovereign

  554. over the cross

  555. and the evil

  556. that was being done to Christ.

  557. That's what

  558. D.A. Carson is saying.

  559. So he's sovereign

  560. over circumstances.

  561. Even if evil

  562. is being done to us,

  563. I want to take a moment

  564. and see if there are

  565. any questions

  566. before we continue.

  567. Does that make sense?

  568. When you're talking

  569. about all his attributes,

  570. the only thing

  571. that I would beg

  572. to differ

  573. is that all his attributes

  574. are his attributes

  575. because of his holiness.

  576. His holiness

  577. is not an attribute.

  578. His holiness

  579. encompasses

  580. everything that he is.

  581. he's completely

  582. and wholly

  583. other.

  584. That's why

  585. his omniscience

  586. is other.

  587. His sovereignty

  588. is other.

  589. It's the highest

  590. form

  591. of omniscience.

  592. That's good.

  593. It's not

  594. another attribute.

  595. evil.

  596. We talk about

  597. the simplicity

  598. of God.

  599. So the simplicity

  600. is all his attributes

  601. are one

  602. and there's no division

  603. within God.

  604. He's not like

  605. he's half holy

  606. and he's half loving.

  607. No, he's all holy.

  608. He's all loving.

  609. He's all rapture.

  610. He's all love.

  611. And so

  612. I would say

  613. his attributes

  614. all kind of overlap

  615. with each other.

  616. His power, right?

  617. He's powerfully loving.

  618. He's powerfully

  619. strong.

  620. I know what you mean.

  621. So we have to keep

  622. that in mind.

  623. He doesn't have

  624. division within himself.

  625. The simplicity of God.

  626. Yeah, Matt.

  627. A comment.

  628. D.A. Carson

  629. seems to me

  630. to be echoing

  631. something from

  632. the Westminster

  633. Catechism

  634. about God

  635. determines all

  636. things that happen

  637. yet in such a way

  638. that doesn't

  639. make him the author

  640. of evil

  641. or

  642. violating

  643. human freedom

  644. or establishes

  645. human freedom.

  646. Something

  647. maybe

  648. such a conflict.

  649. Yes.

  650. Yes.

  651. And we're going to get

  652. to man's responsibility

  653. toward the end.

  654. But

  655. that is

  656. the two

  657. truths

  658. that the Bible

  659. gives to us.

  660. Sovereignty

  661. and responsibility.

  662. Right.

  663. And Carson

  664. is a different

  665. Carson quote.

  666. Yes.

  667. Yes.

  668. Carson.

  669. So

  670. there may be

  671. some people

  672. who can put

  673. those together

  674. logically.

  675. You know,

  676. I can't.

  677. And so I,

  678. you know,

  679. I'm left with

  680. what appears

  681. to be a paradox.

  682. But

  683. that's okay.

  684. You know,

  685. science,

  686. there are paradoxes.

  687. Yes.

  688. There are paradoxes.

  689. It's not surprising

  690. that I don't understand

  691. God.

  692. Join the club.

  693. God is one.

  694. God is three.

  695. Three and one.

  696. My puny mind

  697. doesn't understand

  698. that.

  699. I mean,

  700. I'm not going to

  701. understand how

  702. and Spurgeon said

  703. there's not one line,

  704. there's two lines

  705. and you have to

  706. look at them both.

  707. And I think

  708. the moment you

  709. take one side

  710. and make it

  711. the whole thing,

  712. that's when you

  713. run into error.

  714. You have to keep

  715. them both in tension

  716. to be,

  717. to really keep

  718. in tension

  719. what the Bible

  720. keeps in tension.

  721. Yeah.

  722. So he's sovereign

  723. over nations.

  724. He's sovereign

  725. over calamities.

  726. He's sovereign

  727. over circumstances

  728. even if evil

  729. is being done

  730. to us.

  731. Now,

  732. that's a hard

  733. truth

  734. and

  735. that also

  736. gives us

  737. I think

  738. that the

  739. battlefield

  740. of faith

  741. when evil

  742. is being done

  743. to us

  744. is in the mind.

  745. Right?

  746. We have to keep

  747. three truths

  748. in tension

  749. together in our minds.

  750. God is good,

  751. God is for me,

  752. and God is sovereign.

  753. God is good,

  754. God is for me,

  755. God is sovereign.

  756. You have to keep

  757. those three things

  758. in your minds

  759. when we suffer

  760. unjustly from others.

  761. I think the moment

  762. you take God's

  763. sovereignty out of it,

  764. God is good

  765. in God's form,

  766. but he's not really

  767. sovereign,

  768. and that's kind

  769. of cold comfort.

  770. You know,

  771. God is really

  772. powerless to help

  773. you in your

  774. struggles,

  775. in your weakness.

  776. But the scripture

  777. presents those

  778. three things

  779. in unity together,

  780. and I think

  781. that's where

  782. the battlefield

  783. happens in our minds

  784. as we try to

  785. hold God's sovereignty

  786. and his goodness

  787. together.

  788. So point number four,

  789. point number four,

  790. he is not only

  791. sovereign over

  792. our circumstances,

  793. he is also

  794. sovereign over

  795. our decisions.

  796. And we see that

  797. in the decision

  798. that Joseph's

  799. brother made

  800. to sell him

  801. into slavery.

  802. And the decision

  803. to crucify the

  804. Lord of glory

  805. was according

  806. to the definite

  807. plan and foreknowledge

  808. of God.

  809. God is sovereign

  810. even over the

  811. hearts of sinful

  812. men and women.

  813. Proverbs 16,

    Proverbs 16:9

  814. verse 9,

  815. the heart of man

  816. plans his way,

  817. but the Lord

  818. establishes his steps.

  819. And so even in that

  820. verse,

  821. you can see that

  822. human beings have

  823. freedom to make

  824. their own decisions,

  825. right?

  826. The heart of man

  827. plans his way,

  828. but at the same time,

  829. our choices are

  830. under the sovereign

  831. determination of God.

  832. The Lord

  833. establishes his steps.

  834. Can that

  835. Proverbs 16,

  836. 9 apply to

  837. a cartel drug dealer?

  838. Yes, it could.

  839. Yes, it could.

  840. Yes.

  841. God is sovereign

  842. over our decisions.

  843. And we're going to see

  844. that that does not

  845. diminish the drug

  846. dealer's responsibility

  847. and accountability

  848. toward God.

  849. Yes.

  850. So point number

  851. five,

  852. God is sovereign

  853. not only our

  854. decisions,

  855. but God is sovereign

  856. over our salvation.

  857. Now,

  858. when God

  859. determines to bring

  860. someone to faith

  861. to Christ,

  862. he cannot fail.

  863. Now,

  864. I suppose this is

  865. where we must draw

  866. our daggers.

  867. As Charles Simeon

  868. once said to his

  869. friend John Wesley,

  870. but before you

  871. draw out your dagger,

  872. let's consider together

  873. God's sovereignty

  874. in this area.

  875. I'm convinced

  876. if you are a Christian,

  877. we all recognize

  878. in our hearts

  879. that God is sovereign.

  880. And I don't need

  881. to persuade you

  882. that this is true.

  883. How do I know that?

  884. You're like,

  885. Tyler,

  886. you don't know me.

  887. I'm actually

  888. a really staunch

  889. anti-sovereign type.

  890. Well,

  891. friend,

  892. have you ever

  893. thanked God

  894. for your conversion?

  895. Yes,

  896. of course.

  897. But why would

  898. you do that?

  899. Do you pat yourself

  900. on the back

  901. because you are

  902. smarter,

  903. more intelligent

  904. than other people

  905. who refuse to believe?

  906. Not for a moment

  907. would you ever say that.

  908. Instead,

  909. you give God glory.

  910. You realize

  911. that you once

  912. were foolish,

  913. blind,

  914. and could not see,

  915. but then you say

  916. with Paul,

  917. but by the grace

  918. of God,

  919. I am what I am.

  920. And although

  921. you have labored

  922. hard for Christ,

  923. you can say,

  924. though it was not I,

  925. but the grace of God

  926. that is with me.

  927. You give God glory

  928. for your salvation.

  929. But there's a second

  930. thing that you do

  931. that shows that you

  932. believe that God

  933. is sovereign.

  934. And what is that?

  935. Well,

  936. you pray,

  937. don't you?

  938. You pray for the salvation

  939. for someone

  940. who has a hard heart,

  941. a family member

  942. who has rejected

  943. the gospel

  944. so many times.

  945. Well,

  946. what do you pray for

  947. for that person?

  948. Do you pray

  949. that God gives them

  950. eyes to see

  951. and ears to hear?

  952. That God removes

  953. their heart of stone?

  954. That God would

  955. show himself to them?

  956. I think all these prayers

  957. acknowledge at a heart level

  958. that God is in control

  959. and he is powerful

  960. to save by his grace.

  961. And we understand that

  962. at a heart level

  963. when we are on our knees

  964. before the throne of grace,

  965. we cry out to God

  966. and we recognize

  967. that God is sovereign.

  968. And so before we draw

  969. our daggers,

  970. listen to this conversation

  971. between Charles Simeon

  972. and John Wesley.

  973. And two godly men

  974. who are on opposite sides

  975. of this.

  976. And John Wesley

  977. had this conversation

  978. in his diary

  979. with Charles Simeon.

  980. Simeon said,

  981. Sir,

  982. I understand that you

  983. were called an Arminian

  984. and I have sometimes

  985. been called a Calvinist

  986. and so I suppose

  987. we are to draw daggers.

  988. But before I consent

  989. to begin the combat,

  990. with your permission,

  991. I will ask you

  992. a few questions.

  993. Sir,

  994. do you feel yourself

  995. a depraved creature,

  996. so depraved

  997. that you would never

  998. have thought of turning

  999. to God

1000. if God had not first

1001. put it into your heart?

  1002. Yes,

  1003. says Wesley,

  1004. I believe that indeed.

  1005. Simeon says,

  1006. Sir,

  1007. do you utterly despair

  1008. of recommending yourself

  1009. to God

1010. by anything you can do

  1011. and look for salvation

  1012. solely through the blood

  1013. and righteousness of Christ?

  1014. Yes,

  1015. Wesley said,

  1016. solely through Christ.

  1017. But sir,

  1018. suppose you were first

  1019. saved by Christ,

1020. are you not somehow now

  1021. or afterward

  1022. to save yourself

  1023. by your own works?

  1024. No,

  1025. Wesley said.

  1026. Simeon continues,

  1027. What,

1028. then are you to be upheld

  1029. every hour

  1030. and every moment

  1031. by God

1032. as much as an infant

  1033. in its mother's arms?

  1034. Yes,

  1035. altogether,

  1036. Wesley says.

1037. And this is all your hope

1038. in the grace and mercy

  1039. of God

  1040. to preserve you

  1041. unto his heavenly kingdom?

  1042. Yes,

  1043. I have no hope,

  1044. but in him,

  1045. Wesley says.

  1046. Then sir,

  1047. Simeon continues,

  1048. with your leave,

1049. I will put up my dagger again

1050. for this is all my Calvinism.

  1051. This is my election,

  1052. my justification by faith,

  1053. my final perseverance.

  1054. It is in substance

  1055. all that I hold

  1056. and I hold it

  1057. and therefore,

  1058. if you please,

  1059. instead of searching out

  1060. terms and phrases

1061. to be ground of contention

  1062. between us,

  1063. we will cordially unite

  1064. in those things

  1065. where we agree.

  1066. And that's a spirit

1067. I think we all should have

  1068. as we encounter

  1069. our brothers and sisters

  1070. who differ with us

  1071. on this.

  1072. That's what we ultimately

  1073. agree on

1074. is that God gets glory,

  1075. we depend on him

  1076. every single day,

  1077. and that there's nothing

1078. in us that God saw

  1079. that wanted him

  1080. to save us.

  1081. It is God's mercy

  1082. and love alone.

1083. And I think we all

  1084. can agree on this.

  1085. That is the heart

  1086. of a Christian.

  1087. And that's the spirit

  1088. I want to proceed

  1089. in this conversation.

  1090. What's at stake here,

  1091. I don't want it

  1092. to be definitions,

1093. but I want us to see

1094. that God is to be relied

  1095. upon every moment

1096. and he is to get glory.

  1097. So, 2 Thessalonians 2,

    2 Thessalonians 2:13–14

  1098. verses 13 to 14 says,

  1099. But we are always

1100. to give thanks to God

  1101. for you, brothers,

  1102. beloved by the Lord.

  1103. Why?

  1104. Because God chose you

1105. as the first for us

  1106. to be saved

  1107. through sanctification

  1108. by the Spirit

1109. and belief in the truth.

  1110. So, God chooses those

  1111. to be saved

  1112. through belief

  1113. in the truth.

  1114. And some call this

  1115. irresistible grace.

  1116. God the Father

  1117. chose certain individuals

  1118. to be saved

  1119. based on his sovereign

  1120. good pleasure.

  1121. Christ would say,

1122. No one comes to me

  1123. unless the Father

1124. who sent me draws him.

1125. All the Father gives me

  1126. will come to me.

  1127. So, Jesus is saying,

1128. You can't come to me

  1129. unless the Father

  1130. first draws you.

1131. You have the golden chain

  1132. of salvation

  1133. in Romans 8.

  1134. The golden chain

  1135. of redemption.

  1136. So, those whom

  1137. he predestined,

  1138. he called.

1139. And those whom he called,

  1140. he justified.

1141. And those whom he justified,

  1142. he glorified.

  1143. So, the golden chain,

1144. those chains cannot be broken.

1145. If God has predestined you,

  1146. you will be glorified

  1147. according to Paul

  1148. in Romans 8.

  1149. And the Scripture

  1150. which emphatically teaches

  1151. that God is sovereign

  1152. over salvation

  1153. and that his sovereign

  1154. determination

  1155. is decisive

  1156. is Romans 9.

  1157. Romans 9, verse 15.

    Romans 9:15

1158. For he says to Moses,

  1159. I will have mercy

1160. on whom I have mercy

1161. and I will have compassion

1162. on whom I have compassion.

  1163. So then,

1164. it depends not on human will

  1165. or exertion

  1166. but on God

  1167. who has mercy.

1168. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh,

  1169. For this very purpose

1170. I have raised you up

  1171. that I might show

  1172. my power in you

  1173. and that my name

  1174. might be proclaimed

  1175. in all the earth.

  1176. So then,

  1177. he has mercy

  1178. on whomever he wills

  1179. and he hardens

  1180. whomever he wills.

  1181. And verse 21,

  1182. Has the potter

1183. no right over the clay

1184. to make out of the same lump

  1185. some vessels

  1186. for honorable use

  1187. and another

  1188. for dishonorable use?

  1189. What if God,

1190. desiring to show his wrath

  1191. and to make known

  1192. his power,

  1193. has endured

  1194. with much patience

  1195. vessels of wrath

  1196. prepared for destruction

1197. in order to make known

1198. the riches of his glory

  1199. for vessels of mercy

  1200. which he has prepared

  1201. beforehand for glory?

  1202. So ethnicity

  1203. in Romans 9

  1204. or family heritage

  1205. is not decisive.

  1206. That's the point

  1207. that Paul is making.

  1208. Your ancestors,

  1209. your mom

  1210. or your grandmother,

  1211. right,

  1212. that doesn't determine

  1213. whether you're a Christian.

  1214. God's mercy is decisive.

1215. And I was telling Jonathan

1216. there's an old southern song

  1217. called

  1218. God Ain't Never Had a Grandchild.

1219. It goes something like this,

  1220. God Ain't Never Had a Grandchild,

1221. Only a Child Will Do.

  1222. If you're not a joint heir,

1223. then you ain't going there.

1224. No cousin, niece, or nephew

1225. will be among the chosen few.

  1226. God Ain't Never Had a Grandchild,

1227. Only a Child Will Do.

1228. And what a richly edifying song.

  1229. But what they're saying

1230. is what Romans 9 is saying,

  1231. is that your ethnicity

  1232. or family heritage

  1233. is not decisive.

  1234. God's sovereign decision

  1235. to save

  1236. and to show mercy

  1237. is decisive.

  1238. And Romans 9

1239. is not a popular truth,

  1240. but it says

  1241. He created the wicked

1242. for the day of wrath.

  1243. You can go back

  1244. in your Bible,

  1245. Romans 9,

  1246. make sure it's there

  1247. after this.

1248. So to our finite minds,

  1249. admittedly,

  1250. this sounds absurd.

1251. How can God be sovereign

  1252. over salvation

1253. if He is a judge

  1254. and who will condemn

1255. those who do not believe?

1256. How does that make sense?

  1257. And Paul anticipates

  1258. this complaint

  1259. in Romans 9.

1260. You will say to me then,

1261. why does God still find fault?

1262. For who can resist His will?

  1263. And Paul responds

1264. not by a comprehensive explanation

1265. of how these two things

  1266. work together,

  1267. but he rebukes

1268. the spirit of the question.

  1269. But who are you,

  1270. O man,

1271. to answer back to God?

  1272. We have no right

  1273. to find fault

  1274. in God's ways.

1275. Our part is to acknowledge

  1276. these facts

  1277. and worship God

  1278. and His righteousness

  1279. as both sovereign king

  1280. and judge.

  1281. And we see

  1282. that there's no part

  1283. of the universe

  1284. that exceeds God's authority

  1285. and that includes

  1286. those whom He calls

  1287. to be His.

  1288. The Lord alone

  1289. will be exalted

  1290. before that great

  1291. white throne.

1292. And we will say with Him,

1293. why have you shown me mercy?

  1294. Nothing in me

1295. caused me to be here,

  1296. but your grace alone.

  1297. And He will get

1298. all the glory for that.

1299. So I want to stop there

  1300. and ask questions.

  1301. Feel free.

1302. If you have a question

  1303. in your mind,

1304. throw it out for the group.

  1305. So I'm just,

1306. so I think these are

  1307. really difficult things

  1308. for humanity,

  1309. for people like me.

  1310. Everything you said,

  1311. I believe,

  1312. is true.

1313. But how do you respond

  1314. to the person who

  1315. isn't just arguing

1316. for the sake of arguing,

  1317. isn't just trying

  1318. to pinpoint,

  1319. isn't just intellectualizing

  1320. and like,

  1321. well,

  1322. it doesn't make sense

  1323. or it's not fair.

  1324. But the person

  1325. whose heart

  1326. is really torn

  1327. about these things.

  1328. Like the person

  1329. who's genuinely,

  1330. yeah,

  1331. feeling this isn't fair

  1332. or,

  1333. like how do you

  1334. respond to that person?

  1335. Like,

  1336. everything you said

  1337. is true,

  1338. but I'm thinking about

1339. how's that going to land

  1340. with someone

  1341. who's really struggling

  1342. with this,

  1343. not someone who just

  1344. wants to check off

  1345. the doctrinal box.

  1346. I just wondered.

  1347. I completely agree

  1348. and it depends

  1349. on the heart

  1350. of that person.

  1351. Is it an intellectual

  1352. problem?

  1353. Is it maybe

  1354. a past history

  1355. of abuse?

  1356. Like,

  1357. are you saying

  1358. God is sovereign

  1359. over what happened

1360. to me when I was a child?

  1361. How is God good

  1362. in that?

  1363. How is he sovereign

  1364. over that?

  1365. And I think those,

  1366. depending on where

  1367. they are,

  1368. those are two

  1369. different answers.

  1370. Well,

  1371. I think that's

  1372. what I'm getting at.

  1373. The person

  1374. who's really suffering

  1375. or has,

  1376. you know,

  1377. so I have a history

  1378. of childhood abuse.

  1379. I had to work

  1380. really hard

  1381. to get through that

  1382. in a way

  1383. that maintained

  1384. my faith

  1385. in a good God.

  1386. So,

  1387. that's,

  1388. I think that's

  1389. the person I think.

  1390. Yeah.

  1391. I will say,

  1392. I would go back

  1393. to the cross

  1394. and

  1395. someone said,

  1396. you know,

  1397. we,

  1398. sometimes

  1399. we don't know

  1400. why he does

  1401. certain things,

  1402. but we know

  1403. that it's not

  1404. because he doesn't

  1405. care about us.

  1406. That much we can

  1407. say for sure.

  1408. Because at the heart

  1409. of the cross,

1410. we see that he does

  1411. care for us.

1412. And he did give us

  1413. his own son.

  1414. He will give us

  1415. all things.

  1416. And I don't know

  1417. if we can answer

  1418. the question of why,

  1419. which I think

  1420. people want to know

  1421. why did this happen

1422. to me when I was

  1423. younger.

  1424. And,

  1425. of course,

  1426. Christians are to

  1427. lament and to

  1428. weep at those

  1429. who are weeping

  1430. and there's true

  1431. injustice and evil.

  1432. God's sovereignty

  1433. provides comfort

  1434. and patience

  1435. in tribulation

  1436. knowing that

  1437. these are not

  1438. random acts

  1439. outside of God's

  1440. control.

  1441. And he does

  1442. have some...

  1443. Say it again?

  1444. I have a full

  1445. view in faithfulness.

  1446. That's what God

  1447. says in his word.

  1448. I was in rehab

  1449. six times,

  1450. three rehabs,

  1451. two heart attacks,

  1452. 16 months

  1453. in a homeless

  1454. shelter,

  1455. molested by my

  1456. dad,

  1457. my uncle,

  1458. raised with

  1459. hardcore porno,

  1460. my father beat

  1461. my mom.

  1462. It's like I never

  1463. questioned God.

  1464. I never said why.

  1465. I never questioned.

  1466. I just knew that

  1467. he was working.

  1468. And then finally

  1469. my eyes were opened

1470. up and there he is.

  1471. Yeah.

  1472. You know,

  1473. you find out that

  1474. when God is the

  1475. only thing you have,

  1476. you find out that

  1477. God is the only

  1478. thing you need.

  1479. Mm-hmm.

  1480. Mm-hmm.

  1481. You know?

  1482. And it's because

  1483. him,

  1484. because in my

  1485. natural state,

  1486. I hate God.

  1487. He drove me to

  1488. the cross.

  1489. Mm-hmm.

  1490. Nobody is

  1491. sincerely looking

  1492. for God.

  1493. Nobody.

  1494. Mm-hmm.

  1495. They all hate God.

  1496. No matter how

  1497. it looks outside.

  1498. You know,

  1499. you can get this

  1500. close to God

1501. and end up in hell.

  1502. And it looks like

  1503. he's really wanting

  1504. to find God.

  1505. But no.

  1506. God is sovereign.

  1507. You're not going

  1508. to make it.

  1509. Yeah.

  1510. God knows who

  1511. are his.

  1512. And his

  1513. sovereignty,

  1514. to your point,

  1515. we can look back

  1516. and this is the

  1517. doctrine of providence,

  1518. which we'll get to

  1519. in future weeks.

  1520. Sovereignty is

  1521. God's attribute,

  1522. but providence

  1523. looks backwards

  1524. and sees how

  1525. our lives

  1526. were orchestrated

  1527. for our good.

  1528. I think

  1529. Flavel said

  1530. providence is like

  1531. the Hebrew alphabet.

  1532. It's read backwards.

  1533. So you have to

  1534. go backwards

  1535. and see.

  1536. I remember that.

  1537. You have

  1538. horrible circumstances

  1539. in your life.

  1540. If you're a Christian,

  1541. you can look back

  1542. on those things

  1543. and see how God

  1544. was orchestrating

  1545. events to bring

  1546. you to himself.

  1547. Oh, Jesus

  1548. had a great life

  1549. on earth.

  1550. Yeah.

  1551. No,

  1552. man of sorrows.

  1553. Look at Paul.

  1554. When he came

  1555. to Christianity,

  1556. he lost everything.

  1557. Everything.

  1558. And he was raised

  1559. in a male culture.

  1560. He had the education.

  1561. He had the money.

  1562. He had the reputation

1563. and he came to Christ,

  1564. beaten, robbed,

  1565. jailed, shipwrecked.

  1566. I mean,

  1567. he lost everything.

  1568. You know?

  1569. It's not a fun walk.

  1570. Yeah.

  1571. But he gained Christ.

  1572. Yeah.

  1573. So,

  1574. I'll take that math

  1575. right there.

  1576. It's all worth it.

  1577. Yeah.

  1578. It's all worth it.

  1579. It's all worth it.

  1580. And God's sovereignty

  1581. is,

  1582. it is,

  1583. it is a mystery

  1584. and I think

  1585. most things in the...

  1586. Sorry,

  1587. Amos,

  1588. go ahead.

1589. I just want to add

  1590. maybe,

  1591. it's a bit,

  1592. a bit cliche,

  1593. but I think

  1594. that there's

  1595. greater glory

  1596. in different testimonies

  1597. all pointing

  1598. to the same

  1599. holiness of God.

  1600. And everybody

  1601. had identical

  1602. testimonies

  1603. of like,

  1604. we all had

  1605. idyllic childhood

  1606. and then

  1607. came to Christ

  1608. and then died.

  1609. Like,

  1610. if everybody's testimony

  1611. was identical,

1612. I think it would say

  1613. less about God

  1614. than...

  1615. I was long schooled

  1616. and raised in Nebraska.

  1617. Which,

  1618. I've been saying

  1619. that there's,

  1620. that there's,

  1621. that there's,

  1622. that those,

  1623. that that also

  1624. demonstrates God's power.

  1625. But it's,

  1626. but there's

  1627. greater testimony

  1628. in the diversity

  1629. of stories

  1630. that people bring.

  1631. That,

  1632. you know,

  1633. it's kind of like

  1634. the all,

  1635. all nations,

  1636. all races,

  1637. all walks of life.

  1638. But our stories

  1639. all melt into

  1640. one story,

  1641. his story,

  1642. of what he's doing

  1643. in history for us

  1644. and for his glory.

  1645. My story doesn't

  1646. mean anything.

  1647. You know,

  1648. I'm saying it's a story.

  1649. No matter how bad

  1650. it is,

  1651. it means nothing.

  1652. It's his story.

  1653. His utter

  1654. sovereignty

  1655. and my utter

  1656. dependence on him.

  1657. That's the story.

  1658. And that's what

  1659. Dorothy Sayers said

  1660. in the 40s.

  1661. He says,

  1662. the drama of Christianity

  1663. is in the doctrine.

  1664. Crossing the Red Sea.

  1665. The prophets of Baal

  1666. and Mount Carmel.

  1667. The cross.

  1668. All the miracles.

  1669. Man,

  1670. what drama.

  1671. You can't even make

  1672. a movie like this.

  1673. You know?

  1674. And,

  1675. again,

  1676. this is hard

  1677. to keep

  1678. in our minds

  1679. at once.

  1680. But,

  1681. the challenge

  1682. of most truths

  1683. in the scripture

  1684. is that

  1685. there are tensions

1686. and we have to keep

  1687. them both

  1688. in our minds

  1689. at the same time.

  1690. And those who

  1691. aren't comfortable

  1692. living in that tension

  1693. tend to shirk

  1694. one for the other

  1695. and that

  1696. is where

  1697. you get

  1698. error.

  1699. I think the

  1700. intellectual

  1701. part of this,

  1702. the objection is,

  1703. look,

  1704. if God commands

  1705. that we believe

  1706. or to obey

  1707. the gospel,

  1708. then that must

  1709. somehow imply

  1710. the moral ability

  1711. to do so.

  1712. How can God

  1713. command something

  1714. if we have

  1715. no ability

  1716. to follow

  1717. that command?

  1718. that is the part

  1719. where I think

  1720. people have

  1721. a hard time with.

  1722. And there's

  1723. something

  1724. that makes sense.

  1725. That's a logical

  1726. argument that makes

  1727. sense.

  1728. I think the answer

  1729. that I can see

  1730. is that

  1731. the command

  1732. to obey

  1733. is given

  1734. but we always

  1735. act in accordance

  1736. with our nature.

  1737. I think that's

  1738. the answer

  1739. that scripture

  1740. gives us.

  1741. We have

  1742. complete freedom

  1743. to choose

  1744. what is in our

  1745. hearts.

  1746. But we always

  1747. choose sin

  1748. apart from God's

  1749. grace.

  1750. In our natural

  1751. estate,

  1752. we always

  1753. choose sin.

  1754. And

  1755. that's what

  1756. our hearts love.

  1757. And you get that

  1758. in the language

  1759. of being slaves

  1760. to sin.

  1761. you get that

  1762. in Genesis

  1763. even from the

  1764. beginning.

  1765. You had

  1766. the fall

  1767. of Adam

  1768. and then

  1769. right after

  1770. the fall

  1771. who comes

  1772. next?

  1773. Cain.

  1774. And you have

  1775. Cain's line

  1776. of murderers.

  1777. But then you have

  1778. Seth,

  1779. the appointed line,

  1780. the heir

  1781. of God's

  1782. promises

  1783. and you see

  1784. that Seth's line

  1785. are recipients

  1786. of God's grace.

  1787. grace.

  1788. And so you have

  1789. those in our

  1790. natural estate

  1791. apart from God's

  1792. grace,

  1793. we are slaves

  1794. to sin.

  1795. Paul says that

  1796. right in Ephesians

  1797. 2.

  1798. You were slaves

  1799. to the prince of

  1800. the power of the

  1801. air,

  1802. but God rich in

  1803. mercy has made

  1804. you alive with

  1805. Christ.

  1806. So this state,

  1807. we always act in

  1808. accordance with

  1809. our nature.

  1810. God gives us

  1811. the commands,

  1812. but we never

  1813. choose Christ

  1814. apart from

  1815. the Spirit's

  1816. intervening grace

  1817. in our lives.

  1818. So we must

  1819. emphatically say

  1820. that man's

  1821. responsibility

  1822. cannot be

  1823. minimized

  1824. and that we

  1825. are responsible

  1826. for the choices

  1827. we make.

  1828. Yeah,

  1829. I'm sorry,

  1830. I just want to

  1831. add something

  1832. here.

  1833. I think,

  1834. I mean,

  1835. you were kind

  1836. of camped out

  1837. in Romans 9

  1838. a little bit

  1839. here,

  1840. which is good.

  1841. And the end

  1842. of Romans 9,

  1843. I think,

  1844. gives us

  1845. life,

  1846. it's like we

  1847. get to the

  1848. edge of this

  1849. mystery,

  1850. and then we're

  1851. all like,

  1852. wow,

  1853. like,

  1854. we're at the

  1855. edge of a

  1856. real mystery

  1857. here,

  1858. and God

  1859. says,

  1860. basically,

  1861. this far

  1862. and no

  1863. further,

  1864. but then we

  1865. go on and

  1866. try to explain

  1867. it,

  1868. which is,

  1869. we just can't

  1870. help it,

  1871. right?

  1872. We go on to

  1873. apply our human

  1874. reason to try

  1875. to make it

  1876. make sense.

  1877. And I think

  1878. a helpful thing

  1879. to do,

  1880. back to Laura's

  1881. question,

  1882. is to ask

  1883. ourselves,

  1884. why did God

  1885. put this,

  1886. if we have

  1887. the scripture

  1888. he intended

  1889. us to have,

  1890. I think most

  1891. of us believe

  1892. that,

  1893. what is the

  1894. point of

  1895. Romans 9?

  1896. Like,

  1897. what,

  1898. why is he

  1899. telling us

  1900. as much as

  1901. he is telling

  1902. us?

  1903. What question

  1904. is God

  1905. trying to

  1906. answer in

  1907. this particular

  1908. passage?

  1909. And one

  1910. thing we know

  1911. for sure is

  1912. not to give

  1913. us answers

  1914. that are going

  1915. to satisfy our

  1916. human reason.

  1917. like,

  1918. he could,

  1919. he,

  1920. well,

  1921. it's a debate

  1922. whether he

  1923. could do that

  1924. at all,

  1925. but he's

  1926. definitely not

  1927. done it.

  1928. And so,

  1929. when we're

  1930. chasing our

  1931. tails,

  1932. trying to

  1933. figure out,

  1934. make it all

  1935. work,

  1936. what are we

  1937. missing?

  1938. realizing,

  1939. why is God

  1940. telling us,

  1941. if you think

  1942. you had a

  1943. hand in

  1944. your,

  1945. like,

  1946. if you

  1947. think,

  1948. you know,

  1949. there's 8%

  1950. where you

  1951. stepped up to

  1952. the line and

  1953. made a good

  1954. choice,

  1955. and he's

  1956. saying,

  1957. no,

  1958. you didn't,

  1959. what are we

  1960. supposed to

  1961. take away

  1962. from that?

  1963. because we

  1964. can miss

  1965. that most

  1966. obvious thing,

  1967. and I think

  1968. that can

  1969. become,

  1970. if not a

  1971. bomb,

  1972. it can

  1973. become a

  1974. more livable

  1975. thing that we

  1976. walk away and

  1977. say,

  1978. God's trying to

  1979. tell us all

  1980. something,

  1981. and we

  1982. want to argue

  1983. about how it

  1984. fits in the

  1985. human categories,

  1986. when we all

  1987. are all sitting

  1988. here agreeing,

  1989. Jesus is fully

  1990. man,

  1991. fully God at

  1992. the same time,

  1993. there,

  1994. pop goes the

  1995. weasel,

  1996. I mean,

  1997. you did the

  1998. Trinity last

  1999. week,

  2000. it's like,

  2001. all we're

  2002. doing is

  2003. observing the

  2004. inner workings

  2005. of biological

  2006. reality that we

  2007. haven't even the

  2008. first clue how

  2009. it works,

  2010. you know,

  2011. and I think,

  2012. just if I just

  2013. make it one step

  2014. further in

  2015. Romans,

  2016. God's bringing

  2017. Jewish believers

  2018. together and

  2019. Gentile believers

  2020. together,

  2021. humanly speaking,

  2022. it's like a

  2023. miraculous thing

  2024. that's happening,

  2025. and guess what,

  2026. they hate each

  2027. other,

  2028. guess what,

  2029. half of them

  2030. are like,

  2031. well our Bible

  2032. tells us we

  2033. have to do

  2034. this,

  2035. and the

  2036. Gentiles are

  2037. like,

  2038. no we don't,

  2039. Paul's on our

  2040. side,

  2041. blah,

  2042. blah,

  2043. blah,

  2044. and the

  2045. context is,

  2046. believers have

  2047. their daggers

  2048. out,

  2049. and he's like,

  2050. hey,

  2051. none of y'all

  2052. can be,

  2053. I think,

  2054. some of why

  2055. we're told

  2056. that salvation

  2057. is not of

  2058. us,

  2059. is to allow

  2060. a platform

  2061. actually for

  2062. unity,

  2063. ironically,

  2064. because once

  2065. we acknowledge

  2066. that we're

  2067. only here

  2068. because of

  2069. an intervention

  2070. of God

  2071. and a

  2072. supernatural

  2073. miracle in

  2074. our hearts

  2075. to open

  2076. our eyes,

  2077. how can I

  2078. turn to

  2079. some guy

  2080. that's like,

  2081. okay,

  2082. but we have

  2083. to really

  2084. hang on to

  2085. some of the

  2086. things God

  2087. said in the

  2088. Old Testament

  2089. in this way,

  2090. well,

  2091. okay,

  2092. great,

  2093. because if

  2094. you believe

  2095. that,

  2096. it's sin

  2097. for you

  2098. not to

  2099. do it.

  2100. Like,

  2101. the context

  2102. that Paul's

  2103. dropping

  2104. these hard

  2105. truths,

  2106. I feel like

  2107. if we miss

  2108. some of the

  2109. purpose,

  2110. and there

  2111. are other

  2112. places that

  2113. touch on

  2114. God's

  2115. sovereignty

  2116. and salvation,

  2117. and we

  2118. always have

  2119. to ask

  2120. ourselves,

  2121. why is

  2122. God revealing

  2123. this at

  2124. this time

  2125. to these

  2126. people in

  2127. this place?

  2128. Because if

  2129. we go down

  2130. the road

  2131. of trying

  2132. to figure

  2133. this out,

  2134. at the

  2135. expense of

  2136. actually sitting

  2137. there and

  2138. humbly saying,

  2139. can we receive

  2140. what God's

  2141. actually trying

  2142. to say in

  2143. this passage,

  2144. we're off

  2145. track.

  2146. Yeah,

  2147. if I can.

  2148. Yeah,

  2149. I agree.

  2150. It doesn't

  2151. make someone

  2152. feel better

  2153. who had a

  2154. three-year-old

  2155. worn behind a

  2156. dumpster to a

  2157. drug addict.

  2158. You know,

  2159. to me,

  2160. the harder

  2161. questions are,

  2162. what about,

  2163. like,

  2164. it's one thing

  2165. to say as

  2166. Christians,

  2167. God's at

  2168. work in my

  2169. trials,

  2170. God's at

  2171. work in my

  2172. suffering,

  2173. like,

  2174. this is to

  2175. refine my

  2176. character.

  2177. What about a

  2178. three-year-old

  2179. who's born to

  2180. two godless

  2181. drug addicts

  2182. and gets

  2183. raped a hundred

  2184. times and

  2185. dies at 15

  2186. and had no,

  2187. like,

  2188. we have to,

  2189. if that doesn't

  2190. humble us and

  2191. insult our

  2192. conversation here,

  2193. we're off

  2194. track again.

  2195. Yeah,

  2196. yeah,

  2197. no,

  2198. thank you,

  2199. brother,

  2200. appreciate that.

  2201. It's,

  2202. the sovereignty

  2203. of God is

  2204. not a dagger

  2205. for us to

  2206. hit each other

  2207. with,

  2208. it's a pillow

  2209. to put our

  2210. heads on at

  2211. night.

  2212. problem.

  2213. Why does

  2214. God tell us

  2215. to do something

  2216. that we have

  2217. no ability

  2218. to do?

  2219. Because he

  2220. shows us,

  2221. like,

  2222. we can't keep

  2223. the Ten

  2224. Commandments,

  2225. I break them

  2226. every day,

  2227. so what is

  2228. the result?

  2229. You run to

  2230. Jesus.

  2231. He kept it.

  2232. God shows me

  2233. that I can't

  2234. keep his law

  2235. every day,

  2236. but he shows

  2237. me every day

  2238. somebody kept

  2239. it for me.

  2240. Yeah,

  2241. that's good.

  2242. That's it.

  2243. That's the

  2244. answer.

  2245. Jesus did

  2246. it all.

  2247. Instead of

  2248. me trying

  2249. and trying

  2250. and trying

  2251. and failing

  2252. and failing

  2253. and failing,

  2254. but little

  2255. by little,

  2256. he's conforming

  2257. me to his

  2258. image,

  2259. and I trust

  2260. him.

  2261. It's trust,

  2262. yeah,

  2263. amen,

  2264. brother.

  2265. Trust,

  2266. to underline

  2267. the mystery

  2268. here,

  2269. and then we'll

  2270. get into some

  2271. application before

  2272. we close,

  2273. you know,

  2274. we see this

  2275. all over the

  2276. place,

  2277. right?

  2278. The Spirit

  2279. sanctifies us

  2280. through diligent

  2281. self-discipline.

  2282. Who lives

  2283. your Christian

  2284. life?

  2285. You or the

  2286. Spirit?

  2287. Well,

  2288. Philippians 2,

    Philippians 2:12

  2289. verse 12,

  2290. work out your

  2291. salvation with

  2292. fear and

  2293. trembling,

  2294. but it's God

  2295. who's at work

  2296. in you,

  2297. both willing to

  2298. work for his

  2299. good pleasure.

  2300. How does that

  2301. work?

  2302. I have no idea.

  2303. I don't think

  2304. Paul understood

  2305. completely.

  2306. He's saying,

  2307. look,

  2308. the Spirit

  2309. works in you,

  2310. but work your

  2311. salvation out with

  2312. fear and

  2313. trembling.

  2314. Paul,

  2315. another part,

  2316. it says,

  2317. if you sow,

  2318. you will reap.

  2319. But then another

  2320. part,

  2321. it says,

  2322. well,

  2323. it doesn't

  2324. really depend

  2325. on human

  2326. exertion or

  2327. trying hard,

  2328. it just depends

  2329. on God's

  2330. mercy.

  2331. And so,

  2332. these tensions

  2333. are all over

  2334. the place in

  2335. the New Testament.

  2336. And let's go

  2337. into some

  2338. application before

  2339. we close.

  2340. So how does

  2341. God's sovereignty

  2342. help us in our

  2343. sorrow?

  2344. Well,

  2345. again,

  2346. we talk about

  2347. the three things

  2348. keeping in your

  2349. mind at once.

  2350. God is good,

  2351. God is for me,

  2352. and God is

  2353. sovereign.

  2354. And that's the

  2355. battlefield in your

  2356. mind to keep

  2357. those things

  2358. together.

  2359. I love what

  2360. Elizabeth Elliot

  2361. said,

  2362. a woman well

  2363. acquainted with

  2364. suffering.

  2365. She said,

  2366. I'm convinced

  2367. that there is

  2368. nothing that can

  2369. happen to me in

  2370. this life that

  2371. is not precisely

  2372. designed by a

  2373. sovereign Lord to

  2374. give me the

  2375. opportunity to

  2376. learn to know

  2377. him.

  2378. And so what

  2379. she's saying is

  2380. suffering is not

  2381. random,

  2382. but even if

  2383. others mean

  2384. evil against me,

  2385. it's an opportunity

  2386. for me to know

  2387. the Lord.

  2388. He means it for

  2389. my good.

  2390. So how does

  2391. the Baptist

  2392. faith and message

  2393. put it this way?

  2394. God as Father

  2395. reigns with

  2396. providential care

  2397. over his

  2398. universe,

  2399. his creatures,

  2400. and the flow of

  2401. the stream of

  2402. human history

  2403. according to the

  2404. purposes of his

  2405. grace.

  2406. So God reigns

  2407. with providential

  2408. care for us.

  2409. how does God's

  2410. sovereignty,

  2411. I'll throw this

  2412. out here,

  2413. how does God's

  2414. sovereignty help

  2415. us in our

  2416. decision making

  2417. as we battle

  2418. tough decisions

  2419. in our future?

  2420. How does that

  2421. help us?

  2422. You know,

  2423. he has our

  2424. good in his

  2425. mind.

  2426. And his

  2427. glory.

  2428. Yeah.

  2429. Yeah.

  2430. So some of you

  2431. who are facing

  2432. tough decisions,

  2433. God's sovereignty

  2434. helps us to have

  2435. peace in our

  2436. decision making.

  2437. If God wasn't

  2438. sovereign, I mean,

  2439. we should be more

  2440. anxious than we

  2441. actually are.

  2442. Can you imagine?

  2443. Can you imagine

  2444. the uncertainty

  2445. of each decision

  2446. we make?

  2447. Did you not have

  2448. your quiet time

  2449. this morning?

  2450. Man, you better

  2451. be careful.

  2452. The sovereignty

  2453. of God helps us

  2454. to have rest

  2455. in our decision

  2456. making.

  2457. and that doesn't

  2458. diminish, again,

  2459. human responsibility

  2460. to choose

  2461. each day to

  2462. follow Christ.

  2463. And the last

  2464. thing, how does

  2465. God's sovereignty

  2466. help our evangelism?

  2467. Because some

  2468. say, well, doesn't

  2469. that just kill

  2470. evangelism?

  2471. What's the point

  2472. of evangelizing if

  2473. God is sovereign,

  2474. he's going to save

  2475. anyone who he

  2476. decides to save?

  2477. And of course,

  2478. the gospel invitation

  2479. can and often

  2480. is resisted

  2481. and rejected,

  2482. but God's sovereignty

  2483. tells us God

  2484. can save anyone,

  2485. even the most

  2486. hard-hearted person.

  2487. And that should

  2488. make us bold.

  2489. The first reaction

  2490. of your parents

  2491. when you share

  2492. the gospel with

  2493. them is contempt

  2494. for God.

  2495. Such a reaction

  2496. should not surprise

  2497. us, because no

  2498. heart is too hard

  2499. for the grace of

  2500. God.

  2501. And I think

  2502. Luther had it

  2503. right, and

  2504. then we'll end

  2505. in prayer.

  2506. It leaves no doubt

  2507. who is in charge

  2508. and all these

  2509. skirmishes that

  2510. we face in our

  2511. life.

  2512. Though this world

  2513. with devils

  2514. filled should

  2515. threaten to undo

  2516. us, we will not

  2517. fear, for God

  2518. has willed his

  2519. truth to triumph

  2520. through us.

  2521. The prince of

  2522. darkness grim,

  2523. we tremble not

  2524. for him.

  2525. His rage we

  2526. can't endure,

  2527. but for lo,

  2528. his doom is

  2529. sure, one little

  2530. word shall follow

  2531. him.

  2532. Amen, brothers

  2533. and sisters.

  2534. Let's pray.

  2535. Father in heaven,

  2536. we thank you for

  2537. the time together

  2538. and your word.

  2539. Lord, I do

  2540. pray that you

  2541. would help us

  2542. to live in the

  2543. mystery, help us

  2544. to humble us,

  2545. Lord, before your

  2546. throne, to give us

  2547. confidence and

  2548. assurance that you

  2549. are working out all

  2550. things for our good,

  2551. for those who love

  2552. you and are calling
