  1. Hello, I just want to go ahead and get started because I don't know how to say less than I'm going to try to say.

  2. Which is the mark of a bad teacher, so just buckle up.

  3. So let me pray for us and we'll get started.

  4. Our Father in heaven, we have so much to be thankful for.

  5. We're thankful for your son, Jesus, and that you made a way for us to be forgiven and be restored and to come home to you.

  6. We pray this morning that you be here by your spirit as we discuss weighty things.

  7. That you would lead us, give us submissive hearts.

  8. In Jesus' name, amen.

  9. So I would like to issue similar caveats to last week for those of you who weren't here,

  10. which is what we're not going to be doing this morning is any kind of a comprehensive presentation on grace.

  11. So this week we're going to be talking about the grace of God and our ongoing series and the attributes of God.

  12. And, you know, in 45 minutes, there's just no way we can, you know, make this an academic study of grace.

  13. My approach, rather, is going to be to just present some things that I think mostly we're going to be in agreement about

  14. and then discuss and see if we can draw out some encouragements, actually, at the end of the day.

  15. So with that said, the plan is to approach grace with these lenses.

  16. The context of grace, the method of grace, the mystery of grace, the timing of grace, and the magnitude of grace.

  17. That's a lot of lenses.

  18. And so I'm going to try to push through because I think, you know, we have this beautiful mountain, as it were,

  19. that we can look at from different angles.

  20. And I didn't want to leave out any important angles.

  21. So first thing I wanted to talk about is the context of grace.

  22. And by that I mean we are, of course, not approaching the attribute of grace where God is merciful, God is gracious.

  23. We're not approaching this idea in a vacuum.

  24. It's not as if we found a rabbit in the woods and we put him in a cage and we studied him.

  25. And, you know, now we found out, oh, he's a gracious thing.

  26. It's it's there's the context of even talking about God's grace.

  27. We have to start with sin and the wrath of God that is the result of our human rebellion and sin.

  28. And otherwise, if we go on to talk about the other parts of grace without that backdrop, we are missing why grace is even necessary in the first place.

  29. And it's rich and deep meaning.

  30. So I wanted to just pose a question to you that I like to pose to my young children who aren't young anymore.

  31. But I would say to them, so what's the worst sin a person can do?

  32. Like and they love to play this game, right?

  33. They're like, what is the worst or what is the best or what if what's the game they play?

  34. The if would you rather you ever play?

  35. Would you rather sort of in that vein?

  36. And I'm like, no, I don't want to play.

  37. Would you rather not with them giving the things?

  38. Because it's like, would you rather eat a bucket of dead worms or like, no, neither.

  39. But if I ask them and if I ask you, what is the worst sin a person can do?

  40. What's just springs to mind right out of the gate?

  41. Not believe in God.

  42. So we have the theologically minded non six year old in the room.

  43. Yes.

  44. Well, right.

  45. So go ahead.

  46. Accusing Jesus as being demonic.

  47. Wow.

  48. Yeah, I think I think most ordinary people tend to think horizontally when you when you ask, like, what's the worst thing?

  49. What's the worst sin?

  50. Right.

  51. Especially kids like what's the worst thing?

  52. Oh, you kill somebody or, you know, it you it's man on man.

  53. Crime is the the typical instinct of most people.

  54. But I think Raul's right.

  55. I think that what the Bible teaches is the vertical nature of human sin is what starts the wrath.

  56. So I actually I want to read some of Romans one.

  57. This is going to be familiar.

  58. But I really want to get this out on the table before we move on to other aspects of grace.

  59. It's a little bit of a lengthy passage, but I think it will be helpful for us.

  60. So the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

  61. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor give gave thanks to him.

  62. But they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts.

  63. Since they did not see fit to acknowledge God.

  64. He gave them up to a depraved mind to do what ought not to be done.

  65. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity.

  66. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice.

  67. And it goes on to the to the horizontal list.

  68. Right.

  69. But what we observe is.

  70. The chief sin of man is to not acknowledge God as God and to not give him thanks.

  71. Seems kind of appropriate for this week.

  72. And in so doing elevate themselves as God.

  73. And exercise their own autonomy against the God of the universe.

  74. And because of that, we face the wrath of God as humankind.

  75. And I just want to pause and make sure that we don't use church words and just skip on by without feeling the weight.

  76. And to have the God of the universe that created everything pitted against you should give us pause.

  77. And this is the backdrop of even discussing God's mercy and grace.

  78. In the world that we live in now, which is the world that I want to talk about.

  79. Not the theoretical world of did Adam and Eve receive mercy and grace before the fall and all that.

  80. We could we could talk about all that.

  81. But right now it doesn't matter because we said we want to be God.

  82. And we all inherited that disposition.

  83. And that's the dark backdrop.

  84. Any one want to comment or thoughts or questions about the context?

  85. We already ran the red light.

  86. You can't go back and take it back.

  87. Yeah.

  88. And I mean, obviously, like I said, we're going to assume some things in this class this morning.

  89. We could spend the whole class talking about that.

  90. And there are obviously people out there that completely disagree with that.

  91. And, you know, they disagree with that's the position that we're in.

  92. But for the sake of this class, we'll assume that we're kind of on the same page, that we're in big trouble.

  93. Last week, when we talked about the holiness of God, we talked about the problem in terms of the chasm that opened up between sinful man and holy, perfect, righteous God.

  94. And how Jesus bridged that chasm.

  95. And this week, I think these are just words that are trying to describe some similar things where we face as humankind the wrath of God against our sin of autonomy, especially.

  96. So quick definition, a simple definition of mercy and grace.

  97. Mercy being not receiving the punishment you deserve.

  98. And grace being receiving favor you don't deserve.

  99. Again, we could spend an hour just talking about that, but we're not going to.

  100. But I just want to say that without mercy, the flood of grace can't flow for the Christian.

  101. Right.

  102. We have to have the debt resolved.

  103. And I want before we move on, I just want to say the obvious.

  104. This is I feel like is such a hard thing for us to hold on to.

  105. We do not deserve mercy.

  106. By definition, we do not deserve mercy.

  107. By definition, we do not deserve grace.

  108. Just I'm planting a flag because as we move on, it's just a hard thing to hold on to.

  109. And I'm speaking, you know, experientially for myself.

  110. It's hard to not slip into.

  111. Losing grip on the fact that we, by definition, don't deserve mercy and by definition, don't deserve grace.

  112. All right.

  113. So the method of grace, the method of grace.

  114. Since we don't deserve grace.

  115. By definition, again, God gives grace by his own free choice.

  116. So.

  117. So.

  118. Moses says to God, after heinous sin of God's people, Moses says, please show me your glory.

  119. And God said.

  120. I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name, the Lord.

  121. And.

  122. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious and I will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

  123. Interesting that.

  124. The goodness of God is put right there in front of us.

  125. Like here it comes.

  126. I'm going to show you my goodness.

  127. And it's mine to reveal.

  128. To whom I choose.

  129. Already.

  130. Let's not forget the context.

  131. Right.

  132. Because if we can keep the context in front of us.

  133. These.

  134. Teachings of the scriptures, I think, can be put in their proper.

  135. Light.

  136. And we'll talk more about that.

  137. Few verses for you.

  138. These are familiar about.

  139. How we cannot earn grace.

  140. God must.

  141. Give us grace.

  142. Paul says.

  143. So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God who has mercy.

  144. For by grace, you've been saved through faith.

  145. And this is not your own doing.

  146. It is the gift of God.

  147. Now to the one who works.

  148. His wages are not counted as a gift, but his due.

  149. And to the one who does not work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly.

  150. His faith is counted as righteousness.

  151. So now I want to pause and just ask this question.

  152. Why does the freedom of God irk us so much?

  153. Raul.

  154. Because we want to be autonomous.

  155. We want to be free from God like Adam and Eve.

  156. We want to be the captains of our own destiny.

  157. We want to be the final reference point for all human predication.

  158. We're God, not God.

  159. Okay.

  160. Anybody else?

  161. When we encounter like the clear expression that God's free to show grace and mercy to whom he wills,

  162. why does that bother us?

  163. Because we wonder why he might show it to some and others.

  164. Yes.

  165. And then what's behind that that makes us like, ah.

  166. It's not fair.

  167. We don't want to be a kind of a living God.

  168. Yeah, that's an interesting angle too.

  169. Yeah, it also, framed that way, so much of life in the flesh is dependent on your capabilities

  170. and your function and your diligence, your effort.

  171. But God's statement there eliminates that.

  172. It has nothing to do with you.

  173. Yeah, apparently.

  174. Yeah.

  175. I think I'm going to just speak for myself now that we all encounter things in life where, you know,

  176. like my family, it was a foster family, so I had a bunch of foster siblings growing up, a lot of them.

  177. And some of them have been dealt a hand in life that was unimaginably bad.

  178. And some of them were, could not receive the love of our family and my parents who were trying to, you know, love kids.

  179. And, you know, the older you get, you encounter people and you feel like, is it really their fault?

  180. Like they got so, such a, like you think of worst case scenarios, like some kid in the Sudan born behind a dumpster and no parents that love them.

  181. And just like these horrible, horrific things we can cook up in our minds.

  182. And we say, how is that fair?

  183. And I think that I want to take a sidebar for a second, a hermeneutical sidebar, and just say that there are places where we don't, we aren't given satisfactory answers.

  184. God is not inviting us behind the curtain of Godhood and saying, hey, you know what?

  185. Here's how it all works.

  186. In fact, we have some explicit places in scripture where we get to the end of some arguments and reasoning and God says, here's the thing.

  187. I'm God and you're just going to have to trust me.

  188. But what we do have, I think, is we have places where we're making inferences that are perfectly logical, perfectly reasonable.

  189. We see God choosing here and not choosing here and being God.

  190. And we're like, maybe he's just capricious.

  191. Maybe.

  192. You know, but we have to also look at, we have to test our inferences against other clear passages in scripture.

  193. Inferences meaning I take verse A, totally true verse.

  194. I take verse B, totally true verse.

  195. I add them up and deduce, well, maybe God's just, you know, not loving or good after all.

  196. So we encounter passages on this topic of God showing grace to who he chooses.

  197. We encounter verses like this.

  198. We encounter, as surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord,

  199. Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked,

  200. but rather that they turn from their ways and live.

  201. Turn, turn from your ways.

  202. Why will you die?

  203. The Lord is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish,

  204. but everyone to come to repentance.

  205. God, first Timothy, God wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

  206. All I'm trying to do here is just say,

  207. if we're adding things up that equal,

  208. God is capricious or he doesn't care or he's not loving.

  209. That doesn't hold up against other things that scripture says about God.

  210. What are we left with?

  211. We're left with the same sort of place we're left when the Bible says,

  212. Jesus is a fully God.

  213. He is fully God and he's fully man.

  214. You can't take that to the lab and figure that out.

  215. He's God.

  216. It's behind the curtain.

  217. And what we're left with is

  218. we must trust him

  219. and we must test our inferences

  220. against other clear passages

  221. of scripture

  222. to guard our own hearts.

  223. Because Satan,

  224. what does Satan do?

  225. He twists

  226. what God says.

  227. He wants us to hate God.

  228. He wants us not to trust God.

  229. When God comes and says,

  230. you can have everything,

  231. all of this,

  232. run around naked in the garden.

  233. You just can't,

  234. just stay away from this thing.

  235. Why?

  236. Why?

  237. Why do we have to stay away from that thing?

  238. Right?

  239. It's,

  240. it's,

  241. so this is a tool.

  242. That's all I'm saying.

  243. This is a tool that we have in our toolbox

  244. to keep our inner conversation on track

  245. with what other things that God's revealed to us

  246. about himself and his motives.

  247. All right.

  248. Method of grace.

  249. Obviously,

  250. if grace is given freely,

  251. then how do we get it?

  252. This,

  253. this is just being Christian 101,

  254. but someone talk us through.

  255. How do we get grace

  256. if it's a free gift?

  257. Anybody,

  258. put it out there for us.

  259. Through faith

  260. in the Lord Jesus

  261. who gives us himself

  262. by faith.

  263. So we take hold of Jesus

  264. and we're united together

  265. and what he's done

  266. for us.

  267. Before the creation of the world

  268. and the covenant of redemption

  269. and the Holy Spirit,

  270. Jesus

  271. and God the Father

  272. planned out

  273. who would be called,

  274. chosen,

  275. predestined,

  276. sanctified,

  277. and justified.

  278. Glorify all that.

  279. That's my answer.

  280. And I'm sticking to it.

  281. You know,

  282. I think that

  283. the bottom line

  284. is that

  285. we know we can't earn grace.

  286. We know by definition

  287. we can't earn grace.

  288. We must receive grace.

  289. And that has

  290. a lot of side effects

  291. and I think we'll go on

  292. to talk about some of those

  293. a little bit later.

  294. Alright,

  295. the mystery of grace.

  296. The mystery of grace.

  297. So what I mean by

  298. the mystery of grace,

  299. there's actually a lot of mystery

  300. but I just want to hone in

  301. on one part here

  302. which is

  303. how does

  304. a God

  305. of perfect

  306. justice

  307. pass over

  308. evil

  309. and is still

  310. a just

  311. and perfect

  312. judge

  313. and a holy God.

  314. Now,

  315. maybe some of you

  316. haven't gone down

  317. this

  318. line of

  319. thinking

  320. but it's important

  321. I think it's important

  322. that we

  323. talk about this

  324. because

  325. let me put a passage

  326. in front of you

  327. that sort of

  328. crystallizes

  329. this dilemma

  330. and then we'll

  331. just talk about it

  332. real quick.

  333. So this is

  334. Exodus 34,

  335. 6 and 7

  336. back to Moses

  337. saying he wants

  338. to see God's glory.

  339. Moses is begging

  340. God not to leave

  341. the people

  342. because they made

  343. the golden calf

  344. and

  345. recall that

  346. moment.

  347. and the Lord

  348. passed before

  349. him

  350. and proclaimed

  351. the Lord,

  352. the Lord,

  353. a God

  354. merciful

  355. and gracious,

  356. slow to anger

  357. and abounding

  358. in steadfast love

  359. and faithfulness,

  360. keeping

  361. steadfast love

  362. for thousands,

  363. forgiving iniquity

  364. and transgression

  365. and sin.

  366. So that's

  367. awesome.

  368. Love that part.

  369. but who will

  370. by no means

  371. clear the guilty,

  372. visiting the

  373. iniquity of the

  374. fathers on the

  375. children

  376. and the

  377. children's

  378. children to the

  379. third and fourth

  380. generation.

  381. salvation.

  382. So at face

  383. value,

  384. we have God

  385. telling

  386. Moses

  387. and telling

  388. us,

  389. here's what

  390. I'm like.

  391. Here's who I am

  392. and here's what

  393. I'm like.

  394. And by the way,

  395. these two

  396. verses

  397. are the

  398. most quoted

  399. verses

  400. in various

  401. forms

  402. in all

  403. the Bible.

  404. the

  405. authors of

  406. Scripture

  407. picked these

  408. verses up

  409. and repurposed

  410. them all

  411. throughout

  412. the Scriptures.

  413. And so I

  414. think it's

  415. good that we

  416. pause here

  417. and just say,

  418. what is going

  419. on here?

  420. How can

  421. God

  422. say,

  423. I will by

  424. no means

  425. clear the

  426. guilty

  427. right after

  428. He just

  429. said,

  430. I will

  431. forgive

  432. and show

  433. mercy

  434. and clear

  435. the guilty.

  436. That's what

  437. showing mercy

  438. is.

  439. It's almost

  440. like saying,

  441. I am a

  442. God that

  443. will clear

  444. the guilty

  445. and offer

  446. mercy

  447. undeserved

  448. and also

  449. by no means

  450. will I

  451. do that.

  452. So how

  453. do we

  454. make sense

  455. of this?

  456. And what

  457. I'd like to

  458. do is point

  459. us to

  460. Jesus

  461. and say

  462. that

  463. Jesus

  464. paid

  465. and atone

  466. for our

  467. sins

  468. vindicating

  469. God's

  470. mercy

  471. and

  472. grace.

  473. The reason

  474. that God

  475. can say,

  476. I'm not

  477. just going

  478. to clear

  479. evil

  480. and

  481. pass over

  482. it is

  483. because He

  484. had a

  485. plan

  486. to pay

  487. for that

  488. evil

  489. Himself.

  490. And I

  491. know this

  492. is not

  493. unfamiliar,

  494. but I

  495. want to

  496. pause and

  497. meditate on

  498. it a little

  499. bit together

  500. so that

  501. we feel

  502. the weight

  503. of it

  504. because we

  505. must have

  506. a perfectly

  507. just God.

  508. We must.

  509. have a

  510. God of

  511. mercy

  512. and

  513. grace

  514. or else

  515. we have

  516. no hope.

  517. We don't

  518. want a

  519. God

  520. that just

  521. says,

  522. you know,

  523. you raped

  524. someone's

  525. mom,

  526. but it's

  527. okay because

  528. you know

  529. what,

  530. I'm a

  531. forgiving.

  532. I think

  533. this is how

  534. I used to

  535. approach this

  536. question.

  537. I would

  538. conjure up

  539. how I

  540. forgive the

  541. people in

  542. my life

  543. that have

  544. wronged me,

  545. but to be

  546. honest,

  547. no one's

  548. kidnapped a

  549. sibling of

  550. mine and

  551. murdered them

  552. behind a

  553. dumpster.

  554. We can't

  555. have a

  556. God who's

  557. not a

  558. righteous

  559. judge.

  560. We don't

  561. want a

  562. God that's

  563. not a

  564. righteous

  565. judge.

  566. And

  567. so there's

  568. a tension

  569. there.

  570. So let's

  571. turn back to

  572. Romans for

  573. a second and

  574. listen to

  575. this and

  576. see if we

  577. can feel

  578. God telling

  579. us how

  580. this is

  581. being resolved.

  582. So this is

  583. Romans 3

  584. starting verse

  585. 23.

  586. For all

  587. have sinned

  588. and fall

  589. short of

  590. the glory

  591. of God.

  592. There's our

  593. context of

  594. wrath.

  595. And are

  596. justified by

  597. his grace

  598. as a gift

  599. through the

  600. redemption that

  601. is in

  602. Christ Jesus

  603. whom God

  604. put forward

  605. as a

  606. propitiation

  607. by his

  608. blood to

  609. be received

  610. by faith.

  611. So there

  612. is the

  613. gospel in

  614. a nutshell.

  615. Then Paul

  616. goes on to

  617. say,

  618. this was to

  619. show God's

  620. righteousness

  621. because in

  622. his divine

  623. forbearance

  624. he had

  625. passed over

  626. former sins.

  627. So I

  628. take this

  629. to mean

  630. that God

  631. has not

  632. given evil

  633. what it's

  634. deserved at

  635. every turn.

  636. He has

  637. shown real

  638. grace and

  639. real mercy.

  640. And so

  641. then how

  642. is he

  643. right to

  644. do that?

  645. Yeah.

  646. And then if

  647. we bring it

  648. home to

  649. ourselves,

  650. it's like,

  651. you know,

  652. there's the

  653. cheap,

  654. there's,

  655. you guys

  656. know the

  657. people that

  658. grab their

  659. spears against

  660. cheap grace.

  661. And look,

  662. people fall

  663. off the

  664. horse of

  665. truth so

  666. easily,

  667. including all

  668. of us,

  669. of course,

  670. right?

  671. But some

  672. people are

  673. like,

  674. Jesus loves

  675. me,

  676. God forgives

  677. us,

  678. and they're

  679. like,

  680. they cheapen

  681. the grace,

  682. right?

  683. Then other

  684. serious people

  685. that take

  686. God seriously

  687. are like,

  688. you can't

  689. do that.

  690. You can't

  691. just run

  692. around like

  693. all happy,

  694. bubbly,

  695. light,

  696. evangelical

  697. stuff.

  698. And then

  699. they're like,

  700. well,

  701. we want to

  702. bring justice

  703. back.

  704. You know?

  705. It's like,

  706. okay.

  707. But we have

  708. to be careful

  709. because we

  710. can fall off

  711. that horse

  712. on either

  713. side.

  714. I think

  715. I can

  716. remember

  717. going to

  718. my children

  719. and trying

  720. to tell

  721. them why

  722. we talk

  723. about Jesus

  724. all the

  725. time,

  726. why we

  727. sing about

  728. Jesus all

  729. the time,

  730. why is it

  731. always Jesus,

  732. Jesus,

  733. Jesus?

  734. You know?

  735. And I will

  736. pull them

  737. aside and I

  738. will say,

  739. look,

  740. Jesus paid

  741. for our

  742. sins so

  743. that God's

  744. justice could

  745. be satisfied

  746. so that we

  747. can step

  748. into grace.

  749. Without

  750. Jesus and

  751. without the

  752. cross,

  753. we have

  754. no hope.

  755. And it

  756. also answers,

  757. I'm

  758. sidebar here,

  759. but it

  760. also answers

  761. some of

  762. the legitimate

  763. questions of

  764. our time,

  765. which are,

  766. how is

  767. Jesus the

  768. only way?

  769. It just

  770. seems so

  771. narrow.

  772. Right?

  773. But if

  774. we have a

  775. divine

  776. problem of

  777. wrath,

  778. then we

  779. must have

  780. a divine

  781. solution

  782. to the

  783. wrath.

  784. And the

  785. exclusivity of

  786. Jesus begins

  787. to make

  788. sense.

  789. So,

  790. why does

  791. this matter?

  792. Why does

  793. this matter?

  794. Why does

  795. this

  796. discussion

  797. about

  798. preserving

  799. the justice

  800. of God

  801. and the

  802. mercy of

  803. grace of

  804. God

  805. matter?

  806. So,

  807. I want to

  808. read just

  809. one quote

  810. for you,

  811. and then

  812. we'll move

  813. on.

  814. This is

  815. Jerry Bridges,

  816. actually,

  817. who's a

  818. kind of a

  819. popular author,

  820. as probably

  821. most of you

  822. know.

  823. It is at

  824. the cross

  825. where God's

  826. law and

  827. God's

  828. grace are

  829. both most

  830. brilliantly

  831. displayed,

  832. where His

  833. justice and

  834. His mercy

  835. are both

  836. glorified.

  837. But it is

  838. also at the

  839. cross where

  840. we are most

  841. humbled.

  842. It is at

  843. the cross

  844. where we

  845. admit to

  846. God and

  847. to ourselves

  848. that there

  849. is absolutely

  850. nothing we

  851. can do

  852. to earn

  853. or merit

  854. our salvation.

  855. salvation.

  856. Now,

  857. real quick,

  858. if we

  859. rewind back

  860. to Romans

  861. 1,

  862. chief sin

  863. of man is

  864. we don't

  865. acknowledge God

  866. and we

  867. don't give

  868. Him thanks.

  869. But can

  870. you see the

  871. flavor when

  872. we begin to

  873. realize what

  874. Jesus has

  875. done and

  876. what God

  877. has done

  878. without giving

  879. up His

  880. justice and

  881. without giving

  882. up His mercy

  883. and grace

  884. that that

  885. does lead

  886. us back

  887. to a place

  888. where we

  889. acknowledge

  890. Him.

  891. In order

  892. to receive

  893. this grace,

  894. we acknowledge

  895. Him and

  896. we give Him

  897. thanks.

  898. Those two

  899. things are

  900. as natural.

  901. As soon as

  902. we cross

  903. over and

  904. receive,

  905. we are

  906. doing both

  907. of those

  908. things in

  909. some measure.

  910. They connect.

  911. the timing

  912. of grace.

  913. The timing

  914. of grace.

  915. This has

  916. been on my

  917. heart for a

  918. long time,

  919. not just

  920. through the

  921. lens of

  922. grace,

  923. which is

  924. where we

  925. find ourselves

  926. right now

  927. in the

  928. timeline of

  929. redemption.

  930. if we

  931. don't get

  932. that right,

  933. if we

  934. don't

  935. understand

  936. the season

  937. that we're

  938. in,

  939. it results

  940. in all

  941. sorts of

  942. unhealthy

  943. spiritual

  944. consequences.

  945. Let me

  946. read this

  947. passage and

  948. I'll try

  949. to explain

  950. it through

  951. the lens

  952. of grace.

  953. So this

  954. is from

  955. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  956. chapter 1,

  957. starting in

  958. verse 10.

  959. Concerning

  960. this salvation,

  961. the prophets

  962. who prophesied

  963. about the

  964. grace that

  965. was to be

  966. yours,

  967. searched

  968. and inquired

  969. carefully,

  970. inquiring

  971. what person

  972. or time

  973. the Spirit

  974. of Christ

  975. in them

  976. was indicating

  977. when he

  978. predicted the

  979. sufferings of

  980. Christ and

  981. the subsequent

  982. glories.

  983. God's

  984. grace.

  985. So I'm

  986. going to

  987. pause and

  988. just say

  989. this is

  990. referencing

  991. grace that

  992. we have

  993. received already

  994. that we

  995. now look

  996. back to

  997. in our

  998. season

  999. because we

  1000. have Jesus

  1001. came and

  1002. we have the

  1003. record of it

  1004. and we have

  1005. the Holy Spirit

  1006. attesting to it.

  1007. so we're

  1008. looking back

  1009. to that

  1010. part of

  1011. God's

  1012. grace.

  1013. Then he

  1014. goes on

  1015. verse 12.

  1016. It was

  1017. revealed to

  1018. them that

  1019. they were

  1020. serving not

  1021. themselves but

  1022. you and

  1023. the things

  1024. that have

  1025. now been

  1026. announced to

  1027. you through

  1028. those who

  1029. preach the

  1030. good news

  1031. to you by

  1032. the Holy

  1033. Spirit sent

  1034. from heaven.

  1035. Things into

  1036. which angels

  1037. long to

  1038. look.

  1039. Therefore

  1040. preparing your

  1041. minds for

  1042. action and

  1043. being sober

  1044. minded set

  1045. your hope

  1046. fully on

  1047. the grace

  1048. that will

  1049. be brought

  1050. to you at

  1051. the revelation

  1052. of Jesus

  1053. Christ.

  1054. What's he

  1055. talking about

  1056. there?

  1057. Do you

  1058. think?

  1059. What's the

  1060. grace that

  1061. will be brought

  1062. to us at

  1063. the revelation

  1064. of Jesus

  1065. Christ?

  1066. Do we have

  1067. that now?

  1068. No.

  1069. No.

  1070. We don't

  1071. have that

  1072. grace.

  1073. Yes and

  1074. no.

  1075. No.

  1076. What this

  1077. is doing is

  1078. like teasing

  1079. apart for

  1080. our benefit

  1081. to sustain

  1082. us in the

  1083. here and

  1084. now with

  1085. the already

  1086. and the not

  1087. yet.

  1088. We're familiar

  1089. with the

  1090. already and

  1091. the not

  1092. yet like

  1093. theological

  1094. handles.

  1095. right?

  1096. So already

  1097. we in our

  1098. time and

  1099. place have

  1100. Jesus as

  1101. a thing,

  1102. a person we

  1103. can look

  1104. back to

  1105. and say

  1106. God fulfilled

  1107. his promise.

  1108. We have all

  1109. these amazing

  1110. scriptures that

  1111. shed so much

  1112. light on the

  1113. meaning of

  1114. what Jesus

  1115. did as we've

  1116. been talking

  1117. about.

  1118. But,

  1119. and,

  1120. we're told

  1121. that we

  1122. should be

  1123. sober-minded

  1124. now.

  1125. We should

  1126. be prepared

  1127. for action

  1128. now.

  1129. What that

  1130. means,

  1131. I mean,

  1132. part of what

  1133. that means

  1134. is that we

  1135. think rightly

  1136. about where

  1137. we are right

  1138. now on the

  1139. timeline,

  1140. setting our

  1141. hope fully

  1142. on the

  1143. grace that

  1144. will be

  1145. brought to

  1146. us at

  1147. the revelation

  1148. of Jesus

  1149. Christ.

  1150. In other

  1151. words,

  1152. when he

  1153. comes back.

  1154. When he

  1155. comes back.

  1156. When he

  1157. comes back.

  1158. Because,

  1159. before we

  1160. end today,

  1161. I'm going

  1162. to just

  1163. lay on

  1164. you the

  1165. magnitude

  1166. of grace.

  1167. Like,

  1168. it's too

  1169. good to

  1170. be true.

  1171. People say

  1172. that,

  1173. right?

  1174. But,

  1175. it almost,

  1176. it almost

  1177. is so good

  1178. that there's

  1179. that part

  1180. in my

  1181. heart,

  1182. maybe in

  1183. yours too,

  1184. and you're

  1185. like,

  1186. that just,

  1187. it just

  1188. can't be.

  1189. It just

  1190. can't.

  1191. Because we

  1192. have our

  1193. experience in

  1194. this life

  1195. where we

  1196. just get

  1197. hammered

  1198. and let

  1199. down and

  1200. our guards

  1201. up and

  1202. it ought

  1203. to be

  1204. up because

  1205. we're

  1206. living in

  1207. the wilderness

  1208. period.

  1209. And this

  1210. is my

  1211. point.

  1212. As

  1213. Christians,

  1214. it's super

  1215. important that

  1216. we are

  1217. self-aware

  1218. that we

  1219. are in

  1220. our

  1221. wilderness

  1222. season.

  1223. Christians

  1224. talk about

  1225. this in a

  1226. lot of

  1227. different

  1228. ways.

  1229. They call

  1230. themselves

  1231. pilgrims.

  1232. This isn't

  1233. our home.

  1234. We must

  1235. keep our

  1236. eyes on

  1237. our future

  1238. hope.

  1239. And with

  1240. regard to

  1241. grace,

  1242. we must

  1243. encourage our

  1244. own hearts

  1245. with God's

  1246. promise of

  1247. what's

  1248. coming.

  1249. Let's go

  1250. back to our

  1251. definition of

  1252. grace.

  1253. Mercy

  1254. wipes out

  1255. our debt.

  1256. But grace

  1257. is unmerited

  1258. favor.

  1259. Goodness.

  1260. And to

  1261. be honest,

  1262. I mean,

  1263. a lot of

  1264. Christians

  1265. debate,

  1266. right,

  1267. how much

  1268. of this

  1269. do we

  1270. have in

  1271. the here

  1272. and now.

  1273. And some

  1274. people will

  1275. say,

  1276. well,

  1277. you just

  1278. don't have

  1279. it because

  1280. you're not

  1281. drinking in

  1282. the Holy

  1283. Spirit enough

  1284. and that's

  1285. fair enough.

  1286. Like,

  1287. I don't know

  1288. that there's

  1289. any Christian

  1290. you could

  1291. come to

  1292. and say,

  1293. oh,

  1294. you're being

  1295. miserable?

  1296. It's because

  1297. you're not

  1298. submitting to

  1299. the Holy

  1300. Spirit enough.

  1301. You'd have

  1302. way more

  1303. joy.

  1304. Who could

  1305. say,

  1306. no,

  1307. that's not

  1308. me?

  1309. You know,

  1310. of course.

  1311. But the

  1312. description of

  1313. what's coming,

  1314. none of us

  1315. are,

  1316. we're not

  1317. there yet.

  1318. And this

  1319. may just

  1320. seem so

  1321. obvious,

  1322. but here's

  1323. another thing

  1324. I want to

  1325. say.

  1326. It seems

  1327. to me as

  1328. I observe

  1329. all of us

  1330. walking along

  1331. together as

  1332. Christians,

  1333. the big

  1334. obvious things,

  1335. it's like,

  1336. yeah,

  1337. that's what we

  1338. believe,

  1339. that's orthodox,

  1340. whatever.

  1341. And then it's

  1342. like,

  1343. boom,

  1344. we're like

  1345. focused on

  1346. some problem

  1347. God doesn't

  1348. give us the

  1349. answer to,

  1350. and we're

  1351. just like,

  1352. let's just

  1353. spend all

  1354. our time

  1355. worrying about

  1356. that,

  1357. or let's

  1358. chase after

  1359. this thing

  1360. of the world

  1361. that promises

  1362. us happiness.

  1363. And, you

  1364. know,

  1365. it's,

  1366. it's,

  1367. these big

  1368. truths,

  1369. they're so

  1370. big,

  1371. and they're

  1372. so grand,

  1373. it's like,

  1374. it's hard to

  1375. hold on to.

  1376. And so,

  1377. I just want

  1378. to say,

  1379. let's not

  1380. forget where

  1381. we are on

  1382. the timeline

  1383. of redemption,

  1384. and that

  1385. that applies

  1386. to how

  1387. God's

  1388. dispensing

  1389. grace.

  1390. It strikes

  1391. me that a

  1392. lot of the

  1393. metaphors that

  1394. the New

  1395. Testament uses

  1396. is about

  1397. farming,

  1398. gardening,

  1399. sowing seeds,

  1400. watering it,

  1401. the dog gives

  1402. the growth,

  1403. it.

  1404. And I,

  1405. I think a

  1406. lot of times

  1407. we're not

  1408. patient the

  1409. way farmers

  1410. are,

  1411. where we

  1412. scatter seed

  1413. and go to

  1414. sleep,

  1415. and it's

  1416. up to God

  1417. whether he's

  1418. going to

  1419. give that

  1420. growth,

  1421. and we

  1422. know it's

  1423. not going

  1424. to receive

  1425. its fullness

  1426. until that

  1427. grace that

  1428. was revealed

  1429. at the day

  1430. of the

  1431. revelation of

  1432. Jesus Christ.

  1433. I know,

  1434. to your

  1435. point,

  1436. a lot of

  1437. people have

  1438. been burned

  1439. out in

  1440. ministry.

  1441. It's like,

  1442. I've been

  1443. preaching for

  1444. 10 years,

  1445. and my

  1446. congregation

  1447. hasn't

  1448. grown at

  1449. all,

  1450. and God

  1451. must have

  1452. failed.

  1453. But I

  1454. think across

  1455. New Testament,

  1456. the measure

  1457. of success

  1458. is faithfulness.

  1459. Are you

  1460. being faithful

  1461. when God

  1462. has given

  1463. you now?

  1464. And God

  1465. hasn't promised

  1466. that over-realized

  1467. eschatology.

  1468. You're going to

  1469. experience all

  1470. the blessings,

  1471. and you're not

  1472. going to reap

  1473. all now.

  1474. You're going to

  1475. have to wait

  1476. until that

  1477. day.

  1478. So,

  1479. I'm not a

  1480. farmer,

  1481. I'm not a

  1482. gardener,

  1483. but I

  1484. know Paul

  1485. uses the

  1486. sowing the

  1487. seeds all

  1488. over the

  1489. place.

  1490. It seems

  1491. like that's

  1492. what he

  1493. wants us

  1494. to realize

  1495. what you're

  1496. saying.

  1497. You're not

  1498. going to

  1499. experience it

  1500. all now.

  1501. Your point

  1502. is to

  1503. sow seeds,

  1504. let God

  1505. do the

  1506. rest.

  1507. Yeah,

  1508. and you

  1509. know,

  1510. like the

  1511. worst-case

  1512. scenario

  1513. thinker

  1514. in me,

  1515. like whenever,

  1516. like so

  1517. long as what

  1518. you're saying

  1519. accounts for,

  1520. you could

  1521. get on your

  1522. face before

  1523. God and

  1524. say,

  1525. I've got

  1526. nothing,

  1527. I just have

  1528. to receive,

  1529. and I'm

  1530. going to

  1531. repent,

  1532. I'm going

  1533. to be in

  1534. a pattern

  1535. of repentance,

  1536. I'm going

  1537. to strive

  1538. to love

  1539. you and

  1540. love other

  1541. people,

  1542. and you

  1543. could be

  1544. dealt

  1545. eye

  1546. cancer,

  1547. you could

  1548. be,

  1549. like let's,

  1550. I'm a

  1551. worst-case

  1552. scenario

  1553. guy,

  1554. like I

  1555. don't,

  1556. anyone else

  1557. in here

  1558. are a

  1559. worst-case

  1560. scenario

  1561. thinker,

  1562. like basically

  1563. test your

  1564. philosophy

  1565. against the

  1566. worst-case

  1567. scenario,

  1568. right,

  1569. which is

  1570. does that

  1571. hold up,

  1572. and I

  1573. think it

  1574. does,

  1575. right,

  1576. like because

  1577. sometimes,

  1578. because God's

  1579. free,

  1580. sometimes,

  1581. like for

  1582. example,

  1583. I'm the

  1584. most cynical

  1585. person,

  1586. this isn't

  1587. good,

  1588. I'm just

  1589. being honest

  1590. for a

  1591. second,

  1592. I'm a

  1593. cynical

  1594. person that

  1595. I trust

  1596. God,

  1597. but I'm

  1598. like probably

  1599. I'm going

  1600. to get,

  1601. it's going

  1602. to be

  1603. terrible,

  1604. but God's

  1605. given me

  1606. five children,

  1607. you guys

  1608. know,

  1609. many of you

  1610. know many

  1611. of them,

  1612. beyond my

  1613. wildest hopes

  1614. would all

  1615. of them be

  1616. professing

  1617. faith in

  1618. Christ,

  1619. okay,

  1620. all of

  1621. them are

  1622. professing

  1623. faith in

  1624. Christ,

  1625. beyond

  1626. my,

  1627. like,

  1628. it's,

  1629. what if

  1630. they weren't,

  1631. what if,

  1632. I mean,

  1633. I have

  1634. friends whose

  1635. children,

  1636. friends that

  1637. were just

  1638. in my

  1639. circles,

  1640. and their

  1641. children hate

  1642. God,

  1643. I don't mean

  1644. they're just

  1645. neutral,

  1646. I mean,

  1647. they hate

  1648. God,

  1649. they're writing

  1650. stuff online,

  1651. they hate

  1652. their parents,

  1653. and my

  1654. philosophy

  1655. has to be

  1656. work for

  1657. that scenario

  1658. too,

  1659. which is

  1660. why this

  1661. promise

  1662. of

  1663. future

  1664. grace,

  1665. that's a

  1666. loaded term,

  1667. I don't mean

  1668. it loaded,

  1669. I mean

  1670. literally the

  1671. grace that's

  1672. coming that's

  1673. not here

  1674. yet,

  1675. is so

  1676. important,

  1677. I think,

  1678. so that

  1679. when we

  1680. encounter

  1681. people who

  1682. are suffering

  1683. worse than

  1684. us,

  1685. who are

  1686. believers,

  1687. we can

  1688. encourage

  1689. their faith,

  1690. and it's

  1691. not trite,

  1692. and it's

  1693. not trivial,

  1694. the world's

  1695. going to

  1696. come along,

  1697. and we're

  1698. like,

  1699. yeah,

  1700. just hold

  1701. on,

  1702. in a

  1703. short while,

  1704. all this

  1705. is going

  1706. to be

  1707. over,

  1708. and the

  1709. world's

  1710. going to

  1711. be like,

  1712. they've

  1713. got the

  1714. this is

  1715. all there

  1716. is

  1717. goggles

  1718. on,

  1719. and we

  1720. look like

  1721. idiots,

  1722. we look

  1723. like fools,

  1724. and as

  1725. Paul says,

  1726. if Jesus

  1727. is not

  1728. raised,

  1729. we are

  1730. idiots and

  1731. fools,

  1732. right,

  1733. but we

  1734. know we're

  1735. on the

  1736. right track

  1737. if even

  1738. our own

  1739. leaders,

  1740. apostles,

  1741. are telling

  1742. us our

  1743. day-to-day

  1744. hope ought

  1745. to make

  1746. us look

  1747. like fools

  1748. for what

  1749. we're trusting

  1750. in that's

  1751. coming,

  1752. and maybe

  1753. this is

  1754. just

  1755. over

  1756. simple,

  1757. like maybe

  1758. I struggle

  1759. with this

  1760. more than

  1761. you guys

  1762. do,

  1763. but I

  1764. struggle

  1765. with that,

  1766. I struggle

  1767. with trusting

  1768. in what's

  1769. coming,

  1770. and with

  1771. actually

  1772. recognizing

  1773. where I

  1774. am on

  1775. the timeline,

  1776. and setting

  1777. my actual

  1778. expectations

  1779. for tomorrow

  1780. morning when

  1781. I wake up,

  1782. like this is

  1783. another day

  1784. in the

  1785. wilderness,

  1786. God's

  1787. with me,

  1788. he's

  1789. given me

  1790. things to

  1791. sustain me,

  1792. but,

  1793. I mean,

  1794. we're all

  1795. going to

  1796. die,

  1797. I mean,

  1798. we talked

  1799. about this

  1800. last week,

  1801. like,

  1802. the wrath,

  1803. it's,

  1804. we're not in

  1805. heaven yet,

  1806. let's put it

  1807. that way,

  1808. no one

  1809. disputes that,

  1810. right,

  1811. I mean,

  1812. we're not

  1813. home yet,

  1814. obvious,

  1815. but I think

  1816. important,

  1817. okay,

  1818. magnitude

  1819. of grace,

  1820. the

  1821. magnitude

  1822. of grace,

  1823. so,

  1824. we got

  1825. ten minutes,

  1826. and really

  1827. what my

  1828. hope is

  1829. for our

  1830. hour,

  1831. is that

  1832. you leave

  1833. encouraged,

  1834. and your

  1835. faith is

  1836. encouraged,

  1837. and my

  1838. faith is

  1839. encouraged,

  1840. and so,

  1841. I'm going

  1842. to put

  1843. some things

  1844. in my

  1845. own words,

  1846. and then

  1847. I'm going

  1848. to read

  1849. some

  1850. scriptures,

  1851. and then

  1852. I hear your

  1853. thoughts,

  1854. and we'll

  1855. close,

  1856. Christians

  1857. are

  1858. forgiven of

  1859. all sins,

  1860. past,

  1861. present,

  1862. and future,

  1863. Christians

  1864. are counted

  1865. as clean,

  1866. holy,

  1867. and righteous

  1868. before

  1869. God,

  1870. Christians

  1871. are restored

  1872. to fellowship

  1873. with God,

  1874. and

  1875. we are

  1876. adopted

  1877. as sons

  1878. and daughters,

  1879. co-heirs

  1880. with Christ,

  1881. mysteriously

  1882. looking forward

  1883. to an

  1884. inheritance

  1885. that the

  1886. scriptures

  1887. themselves

  1888. say

  1889. are beyond

  1890. the imagination

  1891. of what

  1892. we can

  1893. even

  1894. dream up.

  1895. Christians

  1896. are invited

  1897. into

  1898. the glory

  1899. of God,

  1900. and as we

  1901. talked about

  1902. last week,

  1903. mysteriously

  1904. Christians

  1905. are invited

  1906. to be

  1907. partakers

  1908. of the

  1909. divine

  1910. nature.

  1911. I backed

  1912. this up

  1913. with scripture

  1914. last time,

  1915. I'm not

  1916. doing that

  1917. now.

  1918. We have

  1919. new bodies

  1920. coming,

  1921. all of

  1922. this is

  1923. going to

  1924. last forever

  1925. and ever,

  1926. and all

  1927. of this

  1928. is secured

  1929. by God

  1930. himself

  1931. because

  1932. he's

  1933. freely

  1934. giving the

  1935. grace,

  1936. and he's

  1937. the guarantor

  1938. of that

  1939. grace.

  1940. it's the

  1941. flip side

  1942. of us

  1943. not being

  1944. able to

  1945. earn it.

  1946. Have you

  1947. thought about

  1948. these passages

  1949. that vex us

  1950. so much

  1951. about God

  1952. choosing?

  1953. The other

  1954. side of that

  1955. coin is

  1956. that you

  1957. can't earn

  1958. it.

  1959. You cannot

  1960. earn it,

  1961. but God

  1962. can give

  1963. it and

  1964. secure it,

  1965. not by you

  1966. earning it.

  1967. how amazing

  1968. is that?

  1969. Because if

  1970. it ends up

  1971. depending on

  1972. you earning

  1973. it,

  1974. it's in

  1975. jeopardy.

  1976. But we

  1977. test our

  1978. inferences

  1979. against the

  1980. scriptures.

  1981. Now I'm

  1982. going to

  1983. read a few

  1984. passages

  1985. for you.

  1986. 1 Corinthians

  1987. 2.9

  1988. No eye

  1989. has seen

  1990. nor ear

  1991. heard

  1992. nor the

  1993. heart of

  1994. man

  1995. imagined

  1996. what God

  1997. has planned

  1998. for those

  1999. who love

  2000. him.

  2001. Blessed is

  2002. the man

  2003. who preserves

  2004. under trial

  2005. because when

  2006. he has stood

  2007. the test,

  2008. he will

  2009. receive the

  2010. crown of

  2011. life that

  2012. God has

  2013. promised to

  2014. those who

  2015. love him.

  2016. Jesus

  2017. speaking in

  2018. John,

  2019. my sheep

  2020. hear my

  2021. voice and

  2022. I know

  2023. them and

  2024. they follow

  2025. me.

  2026. I give

  2027. them eternal

  2028. life and

  2029. they will

  2030. never perish

  2031. and no one

  2032. will snatch

  2033. them out of

  2034. my hand.

  2035. My father

  2036. who has

  2037. given them

  2038. to me is

  2039. greater than

  2040. all and

  2041. no one is

  2042. able to

  2043. snatch them

  2044. out of

  2045. the father's

  2046. hand.

  2047. And the

  2048. prophet Isaiah,

  2049. for behold,

  2050. I will

  2051. create new

  2052. heavens and

  2053. new earth and

  2054. the former

  2055. things will

  2056. not even be

  2057. remembered nor

  2058. will they

  2059. come to

  2060. mind.

  2061. All of

  2062. this is

  2063. undeserved

  2064. favor.

  2065. All of

  2066. this is

  2067. secured by

  2068. sovereign God

  2069. who's

  2070. setting

  2071. his

  2072. love and

  2073. favor and

  2074. forgiveness

  2075. on us.

  2076. And so

  2077. how do we

  2078. respond to

  2079. this?

  2080. You know,

  2081. maybe we

  2082. just spend a

  2083. couple minutes

  2084. talking about

  2085. that and

  2086. then we'll

  2087. close.

  2088. How do

  2089. we respond

  2090. and how do

  2091. we maybe

  2092. not?

  2093. how do

  2094. we avoid

  2095. how do

  2096. we not

  2097. respond?

  2098. Thoughts?

  2099. tell as many

  2100. people as

  2101. you can

  2102. about it,

  2103. about this

  2104. wonderful

  2105. news.

  2106. How do you

  2107. guide it?

  2108. That's it.

  2109. don't respond

  2110. by saying,

  2111. well, of

  2112. course God

  2113. is going to

  2114. be merciful.

  2115. That's his

  2116. job.

  2117. He's a

  2118. gracious

  2119. God.

  2120. Taking it

  2121. for granted.

  2122. But take that

  2123. context in

  2124. mind always.

  2125. This is what I

  2126. truly deserve.

  2127. This is what I

  2128. be given.

  2129. This is all

  2130. grace.

  2131. So,

  2132. remembering

  2133. that we

  2134. were once

  2135. far off,

  2136. strangers and

  2137. exiles without

  2138. hope,

  2139. without the

  2140. promise,

  2141. but we

  2142. even brought

  2143. near by the

  2144. crisis.

  2145. So,

  2146. keeping that

  2147. context

  2148. to mind.

  2149. As a

  2150. young person

  2151. brought up

  2152. in a loving

  2153. family,

  2154. I took it

  2155. for granted

  2156. and I

  2157. thought I

  2158. was pretty

  2159. good.

  2160. As an

  2161. older person,

  2162. I look

  2163. back,

  2164. so that's

  2165. one thing

  2166. not to do,

  2167. not to take

  2168. it for granted.

  2169. Now, as an

  2170. older person,

  2171. I look back

  2172. and I think

  2173. of all my

  2174. failures.

  2175. Oh, I

  2176. should have

  2177. done this.

  2178. I could have

  2179. done that.

  2180. And then

  2181. God

  2182. reminds me

  2183. of his

  2184. grace.

  2185. That's

  2186. why I

  2187. need

  2188. Jesus

  2189. and I'm

  2190. secure in

  2191. him

  2192. and

  2193. loved

  2194. in

  2195. him.

  2196. Commit

  2197. yourself

  2198. to a

  2199. lifestyle

  2200. of giving

  2201. thanks for

  2202. his

  2203. grace.

  2204. Set a

  2205. goal

  2206. twice a

  2207. day,

  2208. morning and

  2209. night,

  2210. to give

  2211. thanks.

  2212. And remind

  2213. yourself that

  2214. faith is the

  2215. assurance of

  2216. things hoped

  2217. for,

  2218. the evidence

  2219. of things

  2220. not seen.

  2221. And if you

  2222. have faith,

  2223. no matter how

  2224. weak it

  2225. is,

  2226. that verse

  2227. applies to

  2228. you.

  2229. I think

  2230. as a reminder

  2231. that grace is

  2232. always available.

  2233. I think in

  2234. Hebrews it

  2235. says,

  2236. let us draw

  2237. near,

  2238. I don't

  2239. obtain mercy,

  2240. I do me in

  2241. favor in time

  2242. of need.

  2243. I think

  2244. sometimes we

  2245. forget it

  2246. is always

  2247. available,

  2248. actually.

  2249. it's not

  2250. Jesus said,

  2251. how many

  2252. times should

  2253. you give

  2254. your brother?

  2255. There's

  2256. something to

  2257. mere morals,

  2258. right?

  2259. 70 times

  2260. 7.

  2261. So how

  2262. many times

  2263. is God

  2264. willing to

  2265. give grace

  2266. even when

  2267. we own

  2268. them?

  2269. It's a lot

  2270. more.

  2271. I think

  2272. grace is always

  2273. available from

  2274. God.

  2275. I say from

  2276. God in the

  2277. sense that

  2278. there's a

  2279. verse in

  2280. Jonah,

  2281. when he was

  2282. in the belly

  2283. of the

  2284. whale,

  2285. saying,

  2286. those who

  2287. cling to

  2288. worthless

  2289. idols,

  2290. forsake the

  2291. grace that

  2292. could be

  2293. theirs.

  2294. But I,

  2295. I think it

  2296. says,

  2297. will look to

  2298. your temple

  2299. and proclaim

  2300. salvation

  2301. amongst

  2302. God.

  2303. And sometimes

  2304. in the middle

  2305. of our

  2306. trials,

  2307. I think we

  2308. will look

  2309. to other

  2310. things for

  2311. grace,

  2312. but that

  2313. verse reminds

  2314. us that

  2315. grace is

  2316. always available

  2317. and especially

  2318. from God.

  2319. And when

  2320. we don't

  2321. look to

  2322. God,

  2323. we forsake

  2324. the grace

  2325. that the

  2326. verse is.

  2327. It's

  2328. always

  2329. available

  2330. to us.

  2331. This

  2332. grace is

  2333. like a

  2334. treasure

  2335. where

  2336. someone

  2337. sold all

  2338. you have

  2339. to buy

  2340. the field

  2341. where you

  2342. can find

  2343. this ultimate

  2344. treasure of

  2345. Christ.

  2346. And it's

  2347. really,

  2348. it's a

  2349. treasure that

  2350. should be

  2351. more precious

  2352. to us

  2353. than all

  2354. the riches,

  2355. all the

  2356. money in our

  2357. 401k account.

  2358. This grace

  2359. is ultimately

  2360. precious in

  2361. our treasure

  2362. for every

  2363. Christian to

  2364. treat it as

  2365. such.

  2366. And not

  2367. take it for

  2368. granted.

  2369. I can't take

  2370. it for granted

  2371. not when our

  2372. elder,

  2373. our past

  2374. elder,

  2375. walked away

  2376. from the

  2377. faith,

  2378. who was

  2379. baptized,

  2380. who played

  2381. the drums

  2382. in front of

  2383. us,

  2384. and now

  2385. he's gone.

  2386. That scares

  2387. me to death.

  2388. So,

  2389. that scares

  2390. me to no

  2391. end.

  2392. Lord,

  2393. Lord,

  2394. we did all

  2395. these things

  2396. in your name.

  2397. John,

  2398. I think

  2399. it's so

  2400. interesting

  2401. how

  2402. things get

  2403. back to

  2404. gratitude.

  2405. It's like,

  2406. how do we

  2407. respond?

  2408. Well,

  2409. I think

  2410. it's obvious,

  2411. but you

  2412. never encounter

  2413. a brother or

  2414. sister and

  2415. they're kind

  2416. of off

  2417. the rails

  2418. and it's

  2419. easier to see

  2420. in other

  2421. people than

  2422. yourself,

  2423. of course.

  2424. you don't

  2425. hear

  2426. thankfulness,

  2427. you hear

  2428. bitterness,

  2429. maybe.

  2430. And,

  2431. it's just

  2432. so interesting

  2433. you go back

  2434. to Romans

  2435. 1 and

  2436. it's

  2437. acknowledge

  2438. God as

  2439. God,

  2440. and for

  2441. us,

  2442. that means

  2443. receiving

  2444. Jesus,

  2445. that means

  2446. setting our,

  2447. it means

  2448. acknowledging

  2449. that God

  2450. is holy

  2451. and we're

  2452. not,

  2453. and he's

  2454. provided a

  2455. savior and

  2456. we receive

  2457. him and

  2458. then we

  2459. give thanks.

  2460. It's not

  2461. complicated,

  2462. it's just

  2463. hard.

  2464. It's,

  2465. it's,

  2466. and I

  2467. find it

  2468. so,

  2469. you know,

  2470. the older

  2471. I get,

  2472. the gratitude

  2473. being the

  2474. key to

  2475. a joyous

  2476. life while

  2477. we're in

  2478. the wilderness

  2479. journey

  2480. fueled by

  2481. this

  2482. undeserved

  2483. grace,

  2484. the

  2485. undeserved

  2486. favor of

  2487. God

  2488. is what

  2489. we have

  2490. to keep

  2491. pointing

  2492. each other

  2493. back to

  2494. and encouraging

  2495. each other.

  2496. And I

  2497. loved what

  2498. someone said

  2499. too,

  2500. where

  2501. every day

  2502. is a new

  2503. day to

  2504. go and

  2505. recalibrate

  2506. and go

  2507. receive,

  2508. like,

  2509. don't stay

  2510. away from

  2511. God because

  2512. you had a

  2513. terrible week

  2514. and you

  2515. did a

  2516. whole bunch

  2517. of terrible

  2518. stuff.

  2519. And it's like,

  2520. well,

  2521. maybe I'm not

  2522. even a

  2523. Christian now.

  2524. Whoa,

  2525. well,

  2526. that's how you

  2527. got in the

  2528. door in the

  2529. first place.

  2530. Grace is

  2531. still grace.

  2532. It's not like

  2533. after you've been a

  2534. Christian for five

  2535. years,

  2536. now it's the

  2537. you show plus

  2538. grace.

  2539. grace.

  2540. And there's

  2541. some mystery

  2542. there.

  2543. We can look

  2544. to scriptures

  2545. and say,

  2546. hey,

  2547. if you're

  2548. saying that

  2549. you're tasting

  2550. the grace

  2551. and there's

  2552. no evidence

  2553. in your

  2554. life,

  2555. then that

  2556. should be

  2557. a pause

  2558. time.

  2559. But it

  2560. doesn't

  2561. change that

  2562. you're saved

  2563. by grace

  2564. all the

  2565. time.

  2566. And to

  2567. me,

  2568. I find that

  2569. so encouraging

  2570. because

  2571. someone said

  2572. it,

  2573. the doors

  2574. always open

  2575. and we

  2576. have an

  2577. enemy

  2578. who

  2579. wants us

  2580. to paralyze

  2581. us and

  2582. sideline us

  2583. for going

  2584. back to

  2585. that grace

  2586. to fuel

  2587. our

  2588. submissiveness

  2589. to God

  2590. and our

  2591. thankfulness.

  2592. Go ahead,

  2593. Raul.

  2594. For me,

  2595. it's the hard

  2596. part is

  2597. when is

  2598. God doing

  2599. everything

  2600. and when

  2601. is it

  2602. monergism,

  2603. when is it

  2604. that I can't?

  2605. When exactly

  2606. do I get

  2607. my act

  2608. together under

  2609. the hospices

  2610. of the

  2611. Bible?

  2612. Lord and

  2613. my brothers

  2614. in my

  2615. church

  2616. where it's

  2617. me working

  2618. and then

  2619. I'll just

  2620. stop because

  2621. I don't want

  2622. it to be

  2623. just me,

  2624. I want

  2625. it to be

  2626. God.

  2627. But it

  2628. ends up

  2629. looking like

  2630. it's me

  2631. and God

  2632. and if

  2633. it's that

  2634. then I

  2635. can't do

  2636. this.

  2637. It's just

  2638. so confusing

  2639. to me.

  2640. My whole

  2641. Christian walk

  2642. has been

  2643. like that.

  2644. Yep.

  2645. Let's pray

  2646. about that

  2647. because I

  2648. feel that

  2649. and we

  2650. got to

  2651. close and

  2652. that could

  2653. be,

  2654. that's a

  2655. whole other

  2656. thing.

  2657. But let's

  2658. pray.

  2659. Our Father

  2660. in heaven,

  2661. we do

  2662. pray that

  2663. you would

  2664. bolster our

  2665. faith and

  2666. that Holy

  2667. Spirit,

  2668. we pray that

  2669. you would

  2670. continue to

  2671. show us

  2672. Jesus and

  2673. show us our

  2674. ongoing need

  2675. for Jesus

  2676. and help us

  2677. to repent

  2678. and turn away

  2679. from evil

  2680. and turn

  2681. away from

  2682. our self

  2683. sufficiency

  2684. and our

  2685. autonomy

  2686. and turn

  2687. to you

  2688. with open

  2689. hands and

  2690. receive

  2691. our salvation.

  2692. And Father,

  2693. we do pray

  2694. that you would

  2695. help us to

  2696. not make

  2697. peace with

  2698. our sin,

  2699. that we

  2700. would strive

  2701. to please

  2702. you with

  2703. our lives,

  2704. that we

  2705. would fight

  2706. the fight

  2707. of faith

  2708. and pray

  2709. that everyone

  2710. here would

  2711. be,

  2712. that we

  2713. would all

  2714. be encouraging

  2715. each other

  2716. towards the

  2717. finish line

  2718. and we

  2719. would run

  2720. the race

  2721. well.

  2722. And we

  2723. do also

  2724. pray,

  2725. Father,

  2726. for the,

  2727. for our

  2728. witness

  2729. to these

  2730. things.

  2731. So we

  2732. thank you

  2733. for your

  2734. grace and

  2735. we thank

  2736. you for

  2737. your undeserved
