  1. Well, good morning, Church. Would you open with me to the Gospel of John? That's page 833 in the

  2. Pew Bible. This Advent season, we're slowly unpacking the first 18 verses of John's Gospel,

  3. this famous prologue that comes to its climax in verse 14 when John says,

  4. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. That's what Christmas is all about. The Word,

  5. the eternal Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ becoming flesh for us.

  6. But just who is, who is this Word? That's what the opening verses of John's prologue try to show us.

  7. Last week we saw that, in the first two verses, last week we saw the Word's relationship to God.

  8. And what we saw was that from all eternity, the Word was with God, and indeed in the mystery of

  9. God's triune nature, the Word was God. And that meant for us something very profound. It meant that,

  10. you know, there's no God that we might try to find or know or discover behind or apart from the Word.

  11. It's not as if we can sort of get behind the Word to find the real God. No, if we want to know God at

  12. all, we must know Him through the Word, through Jesus, the One who became flesh on Christmas morning.

  13. This Word, John said in verses 1 and 2, is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end,

  14. the timeless One who enters time for us. But if that is the Word's relationship with God,

  15. what about the Word's relationship with creation, with everything else? When we think of God,

  16. we must think of the Word made flesh. But what about when we think of creation, of stars and oceans, of

  17. forests and flowers, of sharks and sunsets? What about that? And what about when we think of us as humans?

  18. What's the relationship of this Word to us? Well, let's take a look together. Let's read John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  19. Now, we're going to focus on verses 3 through 5 this morning, but I'm going to pick up in verse 1. That

  20. might not be on the slides, but you can see it in front of you in the pew Bible. John 1, 1 through 5.

  21. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning

  22. with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

  23. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness,

  24. and the darkness has not overcome it. Let's pray together.

  25. Oh, Father, as we come now into Your Word, we pray that You would come, Emmanuel, and reveal

  26. Yourself to us. Oh, God, help us to see Your wonder and Your majesty and Your power,

  27. and help us to know Your grace and love this morning in a more rich way as we behold You,

  28. the incarnate Word. We pray this in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

  29. Amen. So these verses show us three things. They show us three things about the Word's relationship

  30. to creation. First, John's going to say that all things exist because of the Word, and then all

  31. things thrive because of the Word, and last, all things might hope because of the Word. So all things

  32. exist, thrive, and can hope because of the Word. So let's start with verse 3. All things exist

  33. because of this Word. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that

  34. was made. Now, John here is sort of saying basically the same thing twice, isn't he? He sort of says it

  35. positively at first. All things were made through Him, and then he sort of says, just in case you didn't

  36. get that, I'm going to turn it around and say it negatively. Without Him was not anything made that

  37. was made. Just as in Genesis, where everything came into being, everything that came into being did so

  38. because of God's spoken Word, and remember in Proverbs 3 and 8, where wisdom is the personified

  39. means by which all exists, so here God's Word, now revealed to be the person of the Son, created

  40. everything. And you know, this is actually a pretty common theme in the New Testament. This isn't

  41. something that's sort of an innovation by John, that the pre-existent Christ created all things

  42. is found throughout the New Testament. Consider Colossians chapter 1 verse 16. For by Him, that is

    Colossians 1:16

  43. Christ, all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or

  44. dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through Him and for Him. Or think about

  45. 1 Corinthians chapter 8 verse 6, where Paul brings out the Trinitarian work of creation. He says,

    1 Corinthians 8:6

  46. for us there's one God the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord,

  47. again another name for the one true God, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through

  48. whom we exist, Father and Son at one in the work of creation. Again, we saw the same thing in the book

  49. of Hebrews, in Hebrews chapter 1 verse 2 that we read earlier, where the writer of Hebrews says,

    Hebrews 1:2

  50. in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed the heir of all things,

  51. through whom also He created the world.

  52. Now, you'll notice that John isn't interested so much here in telling us how the Word created all

  53. things, or how long the Word took to create all things. Rather, John wants to drive home the point

  54. that no matter your view of how or how long, whether it took the Word six days, or whether it took the

  55. Word 13 and a half billion years, the Word, the pre-incarnate Son, is the One who made all things.

  56. Now, what difference does this make?

  57. Well, you know, if we believe that all things exist

  58. because of the purposeful intention

  59. of a personal God, if all things were made through the Word, the Son of the Father,

  60. then that means the universe is not an accident, but a gift.

  61. Think about it. You see, if matter simply is, if all things exist just because they do and are a product

  62. of blind time and chance, then life is just an accident.

  63. But that's a deeply unsatisfying view of the world, isn't it?

  64. I mean, don't we start to ask a lot of questions in light of that? After all,

  65. why is there something and not nothing?

  66. And why is this something

  67. seemingly perfectly calibrated to bring forth life?

  68. And why are there some living things in this universe, namely you and me,

  69. who seem to have such an indelible sense

  70. of transcendence, of right and wrong,

  71. of beauty and goodness, of reason and truth?

  72. That no matter how hard we tell ourselves

  73. we're just the matter, we're just the product

  74. of time and matter and chance, that sort of sense

  75. of the transcendent, it never goes away.

  76. We go on loving,

  77. and we go on reasoning, and we go

  78. we go on caring about justice all the same,

  79. even though if we were just the product

  80. of time and matter and chance, all those things

  81. would be an illusion.

  82. You know, it's funny, it's easy to say

  83. that all of life is just an accident.

  84. It's much, much harder to actually live that way.

  85. But what Christianity holds forth

  86. is that creation is not an accident,

  87. but a gift.

  88. Think about it.

  89. The triune God did not have to

  90. create the world.

  91. God, Father, Son, and Spirit

  92. existed from all eternity

  93. in perfect love and glory.

  94. If you want to see a little glimpse

  95. of that glory and love

  96. that existed

  97. before creation and eternity,

  98. read the first five or six verses

  99. of John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  100. God needed nothing

  101. to be utterly perfect,

  102. utterly happy.

  103. God was all that in himself

  104. and will be forevermore.

  105. So the act of creation

  106. wasn't coming from a place of need

  107. or dependence

  108. or loneliness in God.

  109. The act of creation

  110. was not necessary at all.

  111. It didn't have to happen.

  112. It was a sheer gift of God.

  113. Sheer grace.

  114. Now, if the universe is an accident,

  115. it puts us in a posture of despair,

  116. doesn't it?

  117. Perhaps at times,

  118. defiant despair,

  119. shaking our fist against

  120. the nihilistic nothing

  121. that we've thought we are.

  122. But it's despair nonetheless.

  123. But if the universe is a gift,

  124. it puts us in a posture of gratitude.

  125. gratitude.

  126. We did not have to be,

  127. but God in his infinite love

  128. willed it to be so.

  129. And because of that,

  130. we can live not in despair,

  131. but in thanksgiving

  132. and gratitude.

  133. And you know,

  134. here's the beautiful thing.

  135. As Christians,

  136. the object of our gratitude

  137. has a face.

  138. I mean,

  139. look,

  140. you can go on your smartphone

  141. and look for 101 different

  142. gratitude apps,

  143. right?

  144. Matthew McConaughey

  145. can read you a nice story

  146. to put you to bed

  147. and tell you to be thankful

  148. for the universe.

  149. But as Christians,

  150. we actually know the one

  151. that we ought to thank.

  152. The giver of this great gift

  153. of all that we see

  154. of creation of ourselves

  155. is God the Son,

  156. the Word,

  157. who became flesh

  158. and dwelled among us.

  159. He made it all.

  160. And so the proper response

  161. to verse 3

  162. isn't just praise

  163. of the Son's mighty power

  164. and majesty

  165. that he's able

  166. to create all things.

  167. The proper response

  168. is also personal,

  169. heartfelt gratitude

  170. that he has.

  171. That he has created

  172. all things,

  173. including you.

  174. Your life is not an accident.

  175. It's a gift.

  176. But John doesn't

  177. just want us to see

  178. that all things exist

  179. because of the Word.

  180. He goes on to say

  181. that all things thrive

  182. because of the Word.

  183. Look again at verse 4.

  184. In him was life

  185. and the life

  186. was the light

  187. of men.

  188. You know,

  189. part of what John's saying here

  190. is that

  191. the universe

  192. is not a sort of

  193. cosmic crockpot.

  194. You know?

  195. Anyone here

  196. like to use crockpots

  197. for holiday cooking?

  198. Yes.

  199. Well,

  200. what's the beauty

  201. of a crockpot?

  202. You just fix it

  203. and forget it.

  204. You throw in the ingredients,

  205. you turn it on,

  206. and you walk away.

  207. And the thing

  208. just makes itself.

  209. But is that creation?

  210. Is that God's relationship

  211. to the world?

  212. No.

  213. Verse 5 tells us

  214. that the Word

  215. has remained

  216. intimately involved

  217. with all he has made.

  218. Not just creating things,

  219. but sustaining

  220. and enlivening things.

  221. The Word,

  222. because he

  223. is one with God,

  224. shares the self-generating

  225. life of God,

  226. dependent on no one.

  227. And he sustains

  228. all things.

  229. Remember what we read

  230. earlier in Hebrews 1?

  231. Hebrews 1.3,

  232. he's the radiance

  233. of the glory of God

  234. and the exact imprint

  235. of his nature.

  236. And he upholds

  237. the universe

  238. by the Word

  239. of his power.

  240. That is his powerful

  241. Word.

  242. Or again,

  243. in Colossians chapter 1,

    Colossians 1:17

  244. verse 17,

  245. he's before all things,

  246. and in him

  247. all things

  248. hold together.

  249. He spoke the universe

  250. into existence,

  251. and then he goes on

  252. enlivening this creation

  253. in all of its manifold beauty.

  254. In him was life,

  255. John says.

  256. Do you remember

  257. the creation account

  258. in Genesis 1?

  259. How on each successive

  260. day of creation,

  261. especially days 4

  262. and 5 and 6,

  263. creation through God's Word

  264. just teems with life.

  265. Plants and birds

  266. and fish

  267. and animals

  268. and not just one or two,

  269. but there are all kinds

  270. thriving and flourishing

  271. in their vast array,

  272. and God delights

  273. in the diversity of it all

  274. and calls it good.

  275. But the Word

  276. doesn't just enliven,

  277. the Word

  278. enlightens.

  279. In him was life,

  280. and the life

  281. was the light of men.

  282. humanity arrives

  283. on the scene

  284. at the end of day 6

  285. in the creation week

  286. of Genesis 1,

  287. and humanity

  288. shares not just

  289. the life

  290. of this creative Word,

  291. but upon them

  292. shines his light.

  293. They are God's image bearers,

  294. set apart from creation

  295. to resemble God,

  296. to represent God

  297. in the midst of creation,

  298. and also to reflect

  299. the praises of creation

  300. back to God.

  301. So the Word

  302. is creation's life

  303. and light.

  304. He enlivens all things,

  305. and he enlightens

  306. all things.

  307. All things thrive

  308. because of the Word.

  309. Now we can apply this

  310. in many, many ways,

  311. but consider maybe

  312. two things this morning

  313. that this means

  314. for us as Christians.

  315. First, it means

  316. that the pursuit,

  317. the pursuit of the arts

  318. and the sciences

  319. is a properly Christian

  320. thing to do.

  321. As we consider creation

  322. teeming with life,

  323. wonderful in its complexity

  324. and beauty,

  325. and as we feel

  326. as humans drawn

  327. to understand its depths

  328. and unfold its beauties

  329. to discover meaning

  330. and to make meaning,

  331. in all of this,

  332. we're not pursuing something

  333. apart from God in Christ.

  334. Indeed, in faith,

  335. we're drawing near

  336. to God in Christ.

  337. For He is the one

  338. in whom this life

  339. and light

  340. find their source.

  341. Whether it's delving

  342. into the intricacies

  343. of molecular biology

  344. or composing a symphony,

  345. the pursuit of the sciences

  346. and the arts

  347. are for the Christian

  348. means of worshiping

  349. the incarnate Word,

  350. in whom is the life

  351. of creation

  352. and the light

  353. of humanity.

  354. these need not be

  355. God-less pursuits,

  356. but God-saturated pursuits.

  357. So if we believe

  358. that all things

  359. don't just exist

  360. but thrive

  361. because of the Word,

  362. then as Christians,

  363. we will pursue

  364. the arts and the sciences

  365. as a properly

  366. worshipful thing to do.

  367. But second,

  368. if all things

  369. not only exist

  370. but thrive

  371. because of the Word,

  372. then that means

  373. we must pursue Christ.

  374. in all our pursuits.

  375. If He is life

  376. and light,

  377. if Christ is not just

  378. the enlivener

  379. but also the enlightener,

  380. then ultimately

  381. we must seek

  382. to know and understand

  383. not just the gift

  384. of creation

  385. but the giver,

  386. the Creator Himself.

  387. If we desire life

  388. and light,

  389. if we desire enlivening

  390. and enlightenment,

  391. then knowing Him

  392. must be our highest aim.

  393. And when anything else

  394. takes His place,

  395. we've fallen

  396. into idolatry.

  397. You know,

  398. it's very interesting

  399. when you look at

  400. just the history

  401. in the West anyway

  402. of the last few hundred years,

  403. you see that so much

  404. has been driven

  405. by these twin pursuits.

  406. A desire for life.

  407. So you have

  408. the romantic movement

  409. that's seeking life

  410. and creativity

  411. and emotion

  412. and depth

  413. and yet doing it

  414. in a way

  415. that's without God.

  416. and then,

  417. of course,

  418. you have the enlightenment

  419. which is seeking

  420. understanding

  421. and reasoning

  422. and trying to throw off

  423. the shackles of tradition

  424. and religion,

  425. seeking light

  426. and yet doing it

  427. apart from Christ.

  428. You know,

  429. if art is only

  430. for art's sake,

  431. if science

  432. is only

  433. for science's sake,

  434. then both become

  435. an endless labyrinth,

  436. an empty echo chamber.

  437. But if these are pursued

  438. for Christ's sake,

  439. then they can be swept up

  440. into the worship

  441. of our Creator

  442. and God can then

  443. use these human pursuits

  444. to advance

  445. His healing of the world.

  446. And that brings us

  447. to our last point.

  448. All things exist

  449. because of the Word.

  450. All things thrive

  451. because of the Word.

  452. But lastly,

  453. all things may hope

  454. because of the Word.

  455. In verse 5,

  456. John writes,

  457. the light shines

  458. in the darkness

  459. and the darkness

  460. has not overcome it.

  461. Of course,

  462. at first,

  463. this seems to be

  464. simply an allusion

  465. to Genesis 1, right?

  466. And God said,

  467. let there be light

  468. and there was light.

  469. But in the context

  470. of the entire prologue

  471. and in the context

  472. of John's whole gospel,

  473. we realize that John

  474. has more in mind.

  475. The light shining

  476. in the darkness

  477. is not just an allusion

  478. to the Word's work

  479. in creation,

  480. but to the Word's work

  481. in redemption.

  482. After all,

  483. all things

  484. are not the way

  485. they're supposed to be.

  486. Are they?

  487. The triune God

  488. created all things

  489. in love

  490. to participate

  491. in His life

  492. and light.

  493. But is that

  494. what we see

  495. in the world?

  496. That's not how

  497. things are now.

  498. Instead of a world

  499. filled with gratitude

  500. and generosity,

  501. we see a world

  502. filled with grasping

  503. and taking.

  504. Whole economies

  505. driven by profit

  506. and greed

  507. and consumption.

  508. Instead of a world

  509. filled with life

  510. and light,

  511. we see darkness

  512. and decay,

  513. senseless violence,

  514. human arrogance,

  515. and little,

  516. if any,

  517. hope.

  518. It seems like creation

  519. is simply winding down

  520. like a top,

  521. spinning its last few

  522. rotations,

  523. ready to topple.

  524. Now,

  525. for many in the ancient world,

  526. this was just

  527. the way of things.

  528. Good and evil,

  529. light and darkness,

  530. they were just two

  531. equal opposite forces,

  532. eternally at war,

  533. neither one bound to win.

  534. It was a pretty bleak view.

  535. But the biblical view

  536. is much,

  537. much different.

  538. Creation's not the product

  539. of two equal

  540. but opposite forces,

  541. battling it out.

  542. God is God

  543. and he has no rival.

  544. Evil is not some

  545. eternal principle

  546. but the deprivation,

  547. the twisting

  548. of God's good creation.

  549. It's a rebellion

  550. against God.

  551. And so,

  552. what does the creator do?

  553. He created everything.

  554. He would certainly

  555. be within his rights

  556. to uncreate it,

  557. right?

  558. In judgment

  559. to simply let

  560. the top

  561. spin and fall.

  562. God

  563. but instead,

  564. the creator

  565. chooses again

  566. to say,

  567. let there be light.

  568. When the world

  569. was yet uncreated,

  570. God spoke

  571. and there was light.

  572. Now,

  573. when the world

  574. has fallen

  575. and headed back

  576. to darkness,

  577. God speaks again

  578. and says,

  579. let there be light.

  580. light.

  581. But this time

  582. when the light

  583. shines

  584. in the darkness,

  585. when the light

  586. comes,

  587. that light

  588. that shines

  589. in the darkness

  590. wouldn't be a

  591. created light

  592. from sun and moon

  593. and stars.

  594. But it would be

  595. the uncreated light,

  596. the word,

  597. God the sun,

  598. the creator

  599. entering creation

  600. to redeem it.

  601. the one who made

  602. all things

  603. becoming one

  604. with a thing

  605. to redeem us.

  606. You see,

  607. if God has created

  608. the world

  609. through his sun,

  610. through the word,

  611. then all things

  612. may have hope.

  613. Why?

  614. Because God

  615. has sent

  616. this same sun

  617. into the world

  618. to save it.

  619. He did not

  620. leave the world

  621. to collapse

  622. into its own darkness

  623. but rather went

  624. himself into the darkness.

  625. And because he

  626. is the creator,

  627. the darkness

  628. cannot overcome him.

  629. But you know,

  630. as we'll see

  631. in the following verses

  632. of John's prologue

  633. next week,

  634. you know,

  635. this hope

  636. that the creator brings,

  637. that the word brings,

  638. this hope doesn't come

  639. into our lives

  640. automatically.

  641. Tragically,

  642. you can choose

  643. to close your eyes

  644. to the light.

  645. You can choose

  646. to stay

  647. in despair

  648. and darkness.

  649. But you don't

  650. have to.

  651. The word

  652. became flesh

  653. and dwelt among us.

  654. The light

  655. shined in the darkness

  656. so we don't have

  657. to remain

  658. in darkness.

  659. So we can come

  660. into the light.

  661. But how do you

  662. make that move?

  663. How do you step

  664. out of darkness

  665. into light?

  666. How do you enter

  667. into this hope?

  668. Well,

  669. first you have

  670. to admit

  671. that the darkness

  672. isn't just a problem

  673. out there,

  674. sort of out there

  675. in the world,

  676. but it's a problem

  677. in here

  678. as well.

  679. Later in John's

  680. gospel,

  681. Jesus says,

  682. this is the verdict.

  683. Light has come

  684. into the world,

  685. but people loved

  686. darkness instead

  687. of light.

  688. Because their deeds

  689. were evil.

  690. If you're going

  691. to come into

  692. the light,

  693. you first have

  694. to admit the darkness

  695. of your own selfishness

  696. and pride.

  697. But second,

  698. you have to see

  699. what this word,

  700. what Jesus has done

  701. for you.

  702. Specifically,

  703. you have to see

  704. that there was

  705. a moment actually

  706. in Jesus' life

  707. when he allowed

  708. when he allowed

  709. the darkness

  710. to overcome.

  711. As Jesus hung

  712. on the cross

  713. in Mark's gospel,

  714. it says,

  715. darkness came

  716. over the whole land

  717. until three

  718. in the afternoon.

  719. The light

  720. of the world

  721. in that moment

  722. was covered

  723. by darkness

  724. and the light

  725. was extinguished.

  726. You have to see,

  727. friend,

  728. that Jesus died

  729. in darkness

  730. to pay for your sins

  731. so you could be forgiven.

  732. If you're going

  733. to come into

  734. the light of hope,

  735. you need to see

  736. that Jesus loved you

  737. that much

  738. and died for you.

  739. But third,

  740. you need to see

  741. that ultimately

  742. the darkness

  743. did not overcome him.

  744. All the gospel

  745. witnesses proclaim

  746. that Jesus rose again

  747. on the third day

  748. and as the light

  749. of a new day broke,

  750. so the light

  751. of a new age dawned.

  752. Jesus says in John 12,

  753. I've come into

  754. the world as light

  755. so that no one

  756. who believes in me

  757. should stay in darkness.

  758. And if you believe

  759. that God raised Jesus

  760. from the dead

  761. and you put your trust

  762. in him,

  763. then you can be sure

  764. that your sins

  765. are forgiven

  766. and your hope

  767. is secure.

  768. The light shines

  769. in the darkness

  770. and the darkness

  771. has not overcome it.

  772. And the darkness

  773. will not overcome you

  774. because you're united

  775. to him,

  776. the incarnate word,

  777. the creator,

  778. the risen son of God.

  779. So when we say

  780. that the word

  781. became flesh

  782. and dwelt among us,

  783. we're saying nothing less

  784. than that the creator

  785. entered creation

  786. for our sake.

  787. All things exist

  788. because of him.

  789. All things thrive

  790. because of him.

  791. But now,

  792. because of his incarnation,

  793. all things may hope

  794. because of him.

  795. let's pray.

  796. Let's pray.

  797. Lord Jesus,

  798. we praise and thank you

  799. this morning

  800. for making us.

  801. And we ask for your forgiveness

  802. this morning

  803. that there have been many ways

  804. in which we have not thanked you

  805. as we ought.

  806. but Jesus,

  807. we thank you

  808. that despite

  809. our ingratitude

  810. and despite our sin,

  811. you came nonetheless

  812. and shone your light

  813. into the darkness.

  814. The darkness

  815. has not overcome it.

  816. You are the victor,

  817. Jesus.

  818. And we praise you.

  819. Help us to praise you

  820. this Advent season

  821. as our life

  822. and as our light.

  823. Amen.

  824. Amen.
