  1. Well, would you turn with me to the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verses 14 through 18.

    John 1:14–18

  2. That's page 833 in the Pew Bible.

  3. Let me pray as we come to God's Word together.

  4. Our Father in heaven, as we come to your Word written, help us to behold your Word incarnate,

  5. our Lord Jesus.

  6. It's him that we really want to see.

  7. It's his glory that we want to behold.

  8. So help us, Lord, to do that by your Holy Spirit.

  9. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. All right, let me read John, chapter 1, 14 through 18.

    John 1 chapter mention

  11. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory,

  12. glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  13. John bore witness about him and cried out,

  14. This was he of whom I said,

  15. He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.

  16. For from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.

  17. For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  18. No one has ever seen God.

  19. The only God who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

  20. In his book, Simply Christian, N.T. Wright tells this parable in one of his chapters.

  21. There was once a ruler, a dictator, who wanted everything in his country to be thought through

  22. and worked out according to a strictly rational system.

  23. Nothing would be left to chance.

  24. But this ruler, this dictator, noticed one day that the water sources around the country were erratic

  25. and in some cases quite dangerous.

  26. There were thousands of springs of water, often in the middle of towns and cities.

  27. They could be useful, but sometimes they would cause floods,

  28. and sometimes they got polluted, and often they burst out in new places

  29. and damaged roads and fields and houses.

  30. So the dictator decided on a sensible, rational policy.

  31. The whole country, or at least every part where there was any suggestion of water,

  32. would be paved over with concrete so thick that no spring of water could ever penetrate it.

  33. The water that people needed would be brought to them by a complex system of pipes,

  34. and we would even treat the water with some chemicals and keep the people healthy.

  35. With the dictator controlling the supply, everyone would have what they needed,

  36. and there wouldn't be any more nuisance from these unregulated springs.

  37. Well, for many years, the plan worked just fine.

  38. People got used to their water coming from the new system.

  39. It tasted a bit strange, and sometimes they would look back longingly

  40. to the bubbling streams and fresh springs they used to enjoy.

  41. And many of the problems didn't go away.

  42. It turned out the air was just as polluted at times as the water.

  43. But on the whole, the people praised the dictator for his forward-looking wisdom.

  44. A generation passed.

  45. All seemed to be well.

  46. Then, without warning,

  47. the springs that had gone on bubbling and sparkling beneath the solid concrete

  48. could no longer be contained.

  49. In a sudden explosion,

  50. they burst through the concrete that people had taken for granted.

  51. And water shot up everywhere,

  52. through the sidewalks and in the middle of the roads,

  53. through the floors of their shops and homes.

  54. Water came shooting from all directions.

  55. Some people loved it.

  56. At last they could get water without depending on the system.

  57. Others were dismayed.

  58. Especially those who ran the water pipes.

  59. Where would all this lead?

  60. Well, this parable is meant to tell the story of the Western world

  61. for the last few hundred years.

  62. For the past two or more centuries,

  63. philosophical and cultural currents have tried

  64. to pave over spirituality or religion or transcendence

  65. with a thick layer of concrete.

  66. Pack it down.

  67. Keep it away.

  68. Only give it a very small, controlled place in our private lives.

  69. But on the whole, just keep it buried.

  70. But the concrete couldn't hold.

  71. The deep human longing for spirituality,

  72. for transcendence,

  73. keeps breaking through.

  74. For many years, sociologists thought that religion would eventually die out.

  75. That we just wouldn't need it anymore.

  76. But now those confident predictions are seen to be foolish.

  77. The thick concrete of materialism just couldn't hold.

  78. And now the springs of spirituality are bursting forth from every corner.

  79. The human heart longs to be in touch with something greater

  80. and something deeper.

  81. Of course, for many people in the West,

  82. that does not mean a return to traditional religion, does it?

  83. Religion still seems stuffy and cold and boring,

  84. but spirituality,

  85. a way to connect with transcendence and meaning,

  86. that is alive and well.

  87. Just walk through the aisles of Barnes & Noble long enough,

  88. and you'll stumble across the section

  89. filled with books about meditation

  90. and mindfulness,

  91. about mind and body and spirit.

  92. our age is an age hungry

  93. for something more than the old,

  94. concrete, layered world

  95. of the 19th and 20th century rationalism could provide.

  96. And you know,

  97. in that hunger,

  98. there are no shortage of options today.

  99. And there were no shortage of options in John's day either.

  100. The Apostle John,

  101. who wrote what we just read,

  102. spirituality in the first century

  103. was alive and well,

  104. just like in the 21st century.

  105. Now, in John's day,

  106. there were sort of the classic options.

  107. You know,

  108. there was good old paganism

  109. with lots of gods,

  110. each god with his or her own sphere of influence.

  111. You could pick a few of your favorites

  112. based on your tribe or your profession,

  113. and you could hope they would give you

  114. some kind of control or blessing in this life.

  115. And then,

  116. on the other hand,

  117. there was good old Platonism.

  118. The gods were sort of out there

  119. in their own sphere,

  120. and the trick was to escape

  121. this messy material world

  122. and to go dwell there.

  123. But alongside these kind of classic options,

  124. there were some more up-to-date versions.

  125. In the place of good old paganism,

  126. there was Stoicism.

  127. Which sort of held that the divine,

  128. you know,

  129. it wasn't located in individual gods,

  130. but rather there were divine forces

  131. within us and the world.

  132. And if you could just align yourself with them,

  133. with the right mindset,

  134. then you would actually achieve

  135. sort of proper peace now

  136. and maybe even union with that divine

  137. when your life expired.

  138. Stoicism wasn't actually far off

  139. from a lot of spirituality today,

  140. when you think about it.

  141. But then in the first century

  142. and into the second century,

  143. there was also Gnosticism,

  144. which was sort of a revamped Platonism.

  145. In Gnosticism,

  146. what matters about humans

  147. is sort of their secret inner core,

  148. that you have a real self,

  149. deep down,

  150. buried down,

  151. that needs to be identified

  152. and allowed to express itself.

  153. And this real self

  154. is often quite different

  155. from your outer person,

  156. your physical person.

  157. And if you can find this inner spark,

  158. this secret inside of you,

  159. then you'll really be connected

  160. to the divine,

  161. to the transcendent.

  162. And you know,

  163. a lot of spirituality today

  164. is highly Gnostic.

  165. We sort of anxiously try

  166. to find our true self

  167. and our physical bodies

  168. give us no indication

  169. of what that might be,

  170. we think.

  171. So what does the Gospel of John

  172. have to tell us

  173. when it comes to this whole

  174. human impulse for spirituality?

  175. Well, John puts the whole question

  176. on a very different footing.

  177. He says in verse 18,

  178. no one has ever seen God.

  179. All of our human attempts

  180. to reach God

  181. or connect with God

  182. or break through to God,

  183. they don't work.

  184. We can't possibly cross the divide

  185. between the finite

  186. and the infinite.

  187. The gap is just too great.

  188. You know the play Hamlet?

  189. It's sort of like imagining

  190. Rosencrans and Guildenstern,

  191. two characters in that play,

  192. searching the castle,

  193. stalking the graveyard,

  194. marching all over Denmark,

  195. trying to find Shakespeare.

  196. No matter how hard they try,

  197. they aren't going to find

  198. the author of the play.

  199. No one has ever seen God,

  200. John says.

  201. Keep looking.

  202. You won't find him.

  203. But what about all of our human impulses

  204. for spirituality?

  205. Is John just paving more concrete

  206. over the wild springs

  207. deep in the human heart?

  208. Ah, keep reading.

  209. No one has ever seen God.

  210. The only God who's at the Father's side,

  211. he has made him known.

  212. Humans cannot reach up to God,

  213. but God can reach down to humans.

  214. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern

  215. won't ever break outside the play

  216. to find Shakespeare in a pub

  217. in Stratford-on-Avon, right?

  218. But Shakespeare might choose

  219. to write himself

  220. into their world.

  221. And that's what John

  222. is trying to tell us.

  223. The impossible human longing

  224. to see God,

  225. to know God,

  226. the impossible human longing

  227. that bubbles like a spring

  228. under the concrete

  229. of our late modern world

  230. and takes countless shapes and forms

  231. from yoga studios

  232. to mindfulness seminars.

  233. This impossible human longing

  234. has finally actually become possible.

  235. Why?

  236. Not because of anything

  237. you or I have done

  238. or could do,

  239. but only because of what God has done.

  240. God in Jesus has made himself known.

  241. He's written himself into the play.

  242. In fact, the Greek word

  243. that John uses here for make known

  244. at the end of verse 18

  245. and other places in the New Testament

  246. means to tell a narrative

  247. or to narrate.

  248. So we might say that Jesus

  249. is the narration of God.

  250. God speaking his own self,

  251. his own story,

  252. right into ours.

  253. Do you see how this makes Christianity

  254. very different

  255. than other spiritualities?

  256. You know, nearly every other approach

  257. to spirituality says,

  258. if you want to see God,

  259. then you have to make yourself

  260. more like God.

  261. If you want to get in touch

  262. with the transcendent,

  263. here's a set of practices

  264. that will change you

  265. and align you

  266. with that transcendence.

  267. If you want to see God,

  268. well, here's the secret

  269. to become more like God.

  270. Here's the path up.

  271. Here's the path in.

  272. Here's how you,

  273. a finite human,

  274. can get up to the infinite.

  275. But Christianity is very different.

  276. This spirituality says,

  277. not humans must become God,

  278. but God has become a human.

  279. God has become a human

  280. and made himself known.

  281. And for John,

  282. that means two things.

  283. First, it means that in Jesus

  284. we can see God's glory.

  285. And second, it means that in Jesus

  286. we can receive God's grace.

  287. So let's look at the first of those.

  288. We can see God's glory.

  289. Look again at verses 14 and 15.

  290. And the word became flesh

  291. and dwelt among us

  292. and we have seen his glory.

  293. Glory as of the only son

  294. from the father,

  295. full of grace and truth.

  296. John bore witness about him

  297. and cried out,

  298. this was he of whom I said,

  299. he who comes after me

  300. ranks before me

  301. because he was before me.

  302. We've seen his glory.

  303. Isn't that what so many spiritualities

  304. are trying to get at?

  305. A sort of glimpse of glory,

  306. of transcendence,

  307. of infinite,

  308. of awe and wonder and holiness.

  309. John says, here it is.

  310. In the word,

  311. Jesus, the only son

  312. from the father

  313. who became flesh

  314. and dwelt among us.

  315. Of course, in one sense,

  316. this is what the whole Bible's about.

  317. Remember all the way back

  318. in Genesis chapter one,

  319. God creates the world.

  320. In six days,

  321. he sort of sets up the form, right?

  322. And then in six creation days,

  323. he sort of fills it out.

  324. And then on the seventh day,

  325. what happens?

  326. Well, the writer of Genesis says,

  327. God rests.

  328. But you know,

  329. that doesn't mean that God took a break

  330. because he was tired, right?

  331. It wasn't as if six days of work

  332. was really rough.

  333. You know,

  334. you and I work five days

  335. and we get kind of worn out.

  336. We need a two-day weekend.

  337. God can work six,

  338. but he still needs one day off, right?

  339. That's not what Genesis is saying.

  340. The resting on the seventh day

  341. is not the rest of a weary laborer,

  342. but the resting of a king on his throne.

  343. All of creation in Genesis one

  344. is built like a temple for the living God,

  345. the place where his glory rests.

  346. From the very beginning,

  347. God intended to dwell with his creation,

  348. with his people.

  349. But as the story goes,

  350. the first humans disobeyed their king.

  351. They disobeyed God

  352. and they were driven out

  353. from God's presence in the garden.

  354. The dwelling place seemed to be lost.

  355. But then as the story continues,

  356. God reestablishes his dwelling place.

  357. He redeems his people from slavery in Egypt

  358. and he tells them to do what?

  359. He tells them to build a tabernacle,

  360. build a tent in the wilderness.

  361. And this tabernacle would be the place

  362. where God again begins to dwell

  363. in the midst of his people.

  364. They lived in tents,

  365. so God would come

  366. and dwell in their midst in a tent.

  367. And then after God establishes them

  368. in the promised land,

  369. he allows them to build a temple.

  370. Because after all,

  371. the people now live in houses,

  372. so God will dwell in their midst in a house.

  373. And the tabernacle and the temple

  374. would be the place,

  375. it would be the center

  376. of the spirituality of God's people.

  377. Here is where God's glory would reside,

  378. right in their midst.

  379. Here is where the infinite

  380. would touch the finite.

  381. Here is where transcendence

  382. and holiness would come into contact

  383. with the material and the mundane.

  384. This is where God would rest.

  385. This is where God would dwell.

  386. And in both instances,

  387. when the tabernacle was first raised

  388. and the temple first constructed,

  389. we are told that God's holy glory

  390. comes down and fills it.

  391. But you know,

  392. the tabernacle and the temple,

  393. these were just signposts.

  394. They were just preliminary sketches.

  395. God had something greater in store.

  396. Because when the fullness of time had come,

  397. the word became flesh

  398. and dwelt among us.

  399. And the word dwelt that John uses there

  400. is the same word

  401. for pitching a tent,

  402. for a tabernacle.

  403. John is very deliberately saying

  404. that the true tabernacle,

  405. the true temple,

  406. is finally here.

  407. God's no longer dwelling in a tent

  408. or in a temple.

  409. God became flesh

  410. so that humans might know his glory at last.

  411. God has become human.

  412. In Jesus Christ,

  413. we see God's glory.

  414. That was the message of John the Baptist,

  415. Jesus' forerunner.

  416. He who comes after me ranks before me

  417. because he was before me.

  418. According to John the Baptist,

  419. Jesus has the preeminence,

  420. the glory.

  421. John saw it and testified to it,

  422. the gospel writer John says

  423. about John the Baptist.

  424. But how about you and me?

  425. Do we see it?

  426. Do we see God's glory

  427. in the incarnate become flesh word,

  428. Jesus?

  429. Many choose not to.

  430. After all,

  431. I mean,

  432. isn't God's glory

  433. supposed to be powerful

  434. and overwhelming?

  435. Shouldn't it be huge

  436. and gilded

  437. and shining

  438. like the walls of the temple?

  439. But Jesus,

  440. look at him.

  441. born to an insignificant family

  442. in an insignificant part of Israel,

  443. living an insignificant life

  444. for 30 years.

  445. Goodness gracious,

  446. he dies hung up

  447. on a Roman cross

  448. like the trash of the earth.

  449. There's no glory there.

  450. Where's the power?

  451. Where's the shock and awe?

  452. But what sort of glory

  453. were you looking for?

  454. The real glory of God,

  455. the true God,

  456. the God who makes himself

  457. known in Jesus,

  458. it isn't that sort of glory.

  459. You want celebrity,

  460. fame,

  461. money,

  462. power,

  463. that's not real glory.

  464. Real glory,

  465. God's glory,

  466. is right here.

  467. in Jesus,

  468. John says,

  469. full of grace

  470. and truth.

  471. That's what God

  472. ultimately wanted us to see.

  473. And that's what he had been

  474. telling his people

  475. for centuries actually.

  476. Do you remember

  477. when Moses said to God

  478. in Exodus,

  479. God, show me your glory.

  480. What did God do?

  481. Well, God knew

  482. that if sinful Moses

  483. really saw God

  484. and his holiness,

  485. Moses would be undone.

  486. Just like Isaiah's

  487. vision in the temple.

  488. Do you remember that?

  489. Isaiah has this prophetic vision

  490. where he sort of sees

  491. just the hem

  492. of God's robe,

  493. sort of like the edge

  494. of the outermost piece

  495. of his clothing.

  496. And what happens?

  497. He sees the edge

  498. of God's robe

  499. and Isaiah cries out,

  500. woe is me!

  501. I'm undone!

  502. My very being

  503. is shaken to the core

  504. and I'm in pieces.

  505. I'm uncreated

  506. by the holiness of God.

  507. So how is God

  508. going to show Moses

  509. his glory?

  510. Well, God says,

  511. Moses, hide here.

  512. Hide in the cleft

  513. of this rock

  514. and I'll cover you

  515. and then I'll pass by

  516. and you won't see my face.

  517. You'll see my back actually.

  518. That is, you'll see

  519. the kind of after effects,

  520. the echo

  521. of my passing by

  522. and then I'll declare

  523. to you my name

  524. and my glory.

  525. And God does just that.

  526. Exodus 34, 6 says,

  527. The Lord passed before him

  528. and proclaimed,

  529. The Lord, the Lord,

  530. a God merciful and gracious,

  531. slow to anger

  532. and abounding in steadfast love

  533. and faithfulness.

  534. Abounding in steadfast love

  535. and faithfulness,

  536. full of grace

  537. and truth.

  538. That's God's glory.

  539. And it comes to its climax

  540. in Jesus Christ.

  541. Because in the incarnation,

  542. God proves his faithfulness

  543. to all of his promises.

  544. And in the incarnation,

  545. God demonstrates

  546. his steadfast love,

  547. his grace.

  548. In the incarnation,

  549. God completes his plan

  550. promised all the way

  551. back in Genesis

  552. when the first human couple fell

  553. and when God promised

  554. on that day

  555. that one day

  556. a child would come.

  557. One day the child

  558. would come

  559. to crush the head

  560. of the serpent,

  561. to defeat sin and evil.

  562. But in the crushing,

  563. the child would be crushed.

  564. Look again at the tabernacle.

  565. Look again at the temple.

  566. What do you see there?

  567. Day after day,

  568. month after month,

  569. week after week.

  570. What do you see happening

  571. at the tabernacle,

  572. at the temple?

  573. The temple.

  574. Sacrifices.

  575. After all,

  576. how could this holy God,

  577. this almighty creator,

  578. dwell in the midst

  579. of a sinful people?

  580. Would it not surely

  581. mean their death,

  582. their undoing?

  583. Surely his unimaginable holiness,

  584. wouldn't it,

  585. would it not just simply

  586. crush them under its weight?

  587. This last summer,

  588. my family,

  589. we made a trip

  590. to Niagara Falls.

  591. I don't know

  592. if any of you

  593. have been to Niagara Falls,

  594. but it's just massive.

  595. And the just weight

  596. of the water

  597. pouring down.

  598. You can't really feel it

  599. until you're there.

  600. And we were there

  601. and we went on this thing

  602. called I think

  603. the hurricane deck

  604. or something like that

  605. where you sort of

  606. can climb out on this deck

  607. and you're sort of

  608. next to the water

  609. pouring down

  610. and it's spraying off of you

  611. and it hurts.

  612. But it's like the bouncing

  613. of it that hurts, right?

  614. Not the full weight of it.

  615. And honestly,

  616. it's very troubling

  617. being that close

  618. to Niagara Falls

  619. because you think,

  620. one slip

  621. and we're done for.

  622. And if that's true

  623. of a mere waterfall,

  624. friends,

  625. what about the holy God

  626. who made waterfalls

  627. and mountains

  628. and stars

  629. and universes?

  630. Could sinful people

  631. dwell with a God

  632. like that?

  633. So God gives them sacrifices

  634. and so the sacrifice dies

  635. so the people don't have to.

  636. God allows a substitution

  637. to be made.

  638. But you know,

  639. the sacrifices

  640. at the tabernacle

  641. and at the temple,

  642. again,

  643. they were just signposts.

  644. It wasn't going to be

  645. bulls and goats,

  646. but the word made flesh

  647. full of grace

  648. and truth,

  649. full of steadfast love

  650. and faithfulness,

  651. true to his promise.

  652. God himself

  653. would bear the curse

  654. and the crushing weight

  655. of sin.

  656. And that would be

  657. the full display

  658. of God's glory.

  659. According to the Gospel

  660. of John,

  661. where do we see

  662. the glory of God?

  663. It's the glory

  664. of the cross.

  665. The Holy One

  666. would stand

  667. in the place

  668. of the sinner

  669. and the sinner's debt

  670. would be paid.

  671. And that's why

  672. John goes on to say,

  673. for from his fullness

  674. we have all received

  675. grace upon grace.

  676. For the law

  677. was given through Moses,

  678. grace and truth

  679. came through Jesus Christ.

  680. So John's saying,

  681. look,

  682. we don't just see

  683. God's glory

  684. in the incarnate

  685. word Jesus,

  686. but we receive

  687. his grace.

  688. We receive it.

  689. I mean,

  690. think about it.

  691. What is it

  692. that we're really

  693. looking for

  694. in what we call

  695. spirituality?

  696. There might be

  697. a lot of reasons

  698. why people go after

  699. what they think of

  700. as something spiritual.

  701. You know,

  702. it might be a desire

  703. for awe.

  704. It might be a desire

  705. for control,

  706. trying to get

  707. some kind of control

  708. around yourself

  709. or your surroundings.

  710. It might be a desire

  711. for meaning.

  712. To make sense

  713. of life.

  714. But I think

  715. deep down,

  716. isn't what we're

  717. looking for,

  718. isn't what we really

  719. want,

  720. isn't it to be

  721. known

  722. and to be loved?

  723. John says,

  724. we've been given

  725. grace upon grace.

  726. One grace

  727. in place of another.

  728. What was the first grace?

  729. He says,

  730. the law was given

  731. through Moses.

  732. The law is a great gift.

  733. Why?

  734. Because when you look

  735. into the law,

  736. you see yourself.

  737. You see yourself

  738. without any hiding

  739. and without any pretense.

  740. God's perfect law

  741. comes and God says,

  742. I know you

  743. fully.

  744. All of you.

  745. All your virtues

  746. and your vices.

  747. I know you.

  748. Everything that makes you

  749. lovely and everything

  750. that makes you ashamed.

  751. All your triumphs

  752. and all your failures.

  753. All your flaws

  754. and all your sins.

  755. God says,

  756. I know them all.

  757. But is that where it ends?

  758. No,

  759. there comes a second gift

  760. in place of the first.

  761. The law came through Moses.

  762. Grace and truth

  763. came through Jesus Christ.

  764. God knows you fully

  765. and

  766. he loves you completely.

  767. So much so

  768. that what he requires

  769. of you,

  770. what God requires

  771. of you in the law,

  772. God provides for you

  773. in his son.

  774. That's why it's grace

  775. and truth.

  776. There's no one

  777. who knows you better

  778. than Jesus Christ.

  779. He is the God,

  780. the one through whom

  781. all things,

  782. you included,

  783. were created.

  784. And he became flesh

  785. and lived

  786. in this very humanity

  787. that is ours.

  788. No one knows you

  789. better than him.

  790. And still,

  791. he chose to love you

  792. and lay down

  793. his life for you.

  794. No one knows you

  795. better than Jesus

  796. and no one loves you

  797. better than him.

  798. From his fullness

  799. we've received

  800. grace

  801. upon grace.

  802. So where does this

  803. leave us?

  804. Well,

  805. if it is true

  806. that no one

  807. has ever seen God

  808. but the only God,

  809. Jesus,

  810. the Son,

  811. who's at the Father's side

  812. has made him known,

  813. if that's true,

  814. well,

  815. then the application

  816. seems clear.

  817. The only true

  818. and real spirituality

  819. is the one

  820. focused

  821. and centered

  822. utterly

  823. on Jesus Christ.

  824. the bubbling

  825. streams

  826. of human

  827. spirituality

  828. that keep

  829. breaking

  830. through the concrete

  831. are meant

  832. to flow

  833. to him

  834. and to him

  835. alone.

  836. So friends,

  837. what will you do

  838. this week

  839. to draw near

  840. to him

  841. because he

  842. has drawn

  843. so near

  844. to you?

  845. Perhaps

  846. it means

  847. entrusting

  848. your life

  849. to him,

  850. placing your

  851. trust in him

  852. for the first

  853. time

  854. and becoming

  855. a follower

  856. of this Jesus.

  857. perhaps

  858. if you've

  859. already done

  860. that,

  861. it means

  862. taking a step

  863. to get baptized,

  864. to make a public

  865. profession

  866. of faith

  867. in him,

  868. to identify

  869. with him

  870. and his people.

  871. Perhaps

  872. it means

  873. spending a few

  874. moments

  875. in the morning

  876. before the day

  877. begins

  878. to just be

  879. still before him,

  880. to put yourself

  881. not in a posture

  882. of doing

  883. but of receiving

  884. and simply

  885. receiving

  886. his grace

  887. upon grace

  888. for you.

  889. Perhaps

  890. it means

  891. rethinking

  892. what kind

  893. of glory

  894. you've been

  895. living for

  896. because what

  897. we see

  898. in the

  899. incarnate

  900. word

  901. is that

  902. God's glory

  903. isn't found

  904. in power

  905. but in service.

  906. God's glory

  907. isn't found

  908. in celebrity

  909. but in humility

  910. and in honesty.

  911. it's not found

  912. in wealth

  913. but in

  914. self-giving

  915. generosity.

  916. That's the sort

  917. of glory

  918. God wants

  919. to work

  920. in you

  921. through his

  922. spirit.

  923. So where

  924. is the incarnate

  925. and risen

  926. Christ,

  927. the word

  928. made flesh

  929. inviting you

  930. to behold

  931. his glory

  932. and in

  933. beholding

  934. him to

  935. become less

  936. like the world

  937. and more

  938. like him?

  939. That's real

  940. spirituality.

  941. That's the

  942. real wellspring.

  943. That's the

  944. water we're

  945. all longing

  946. to drink

  947. no matter

  948. how much

  949. concrete

  950. we try

  951. to pave

  952. over it.

  953. Let's pray

  954. together.

  955. Our Father

  956. in heaven

  957. by your

  958. Holy Spirit

  959. would you

  960. enlighten

  961. the eyes

  962. of our

  963. hearts

  964. that we

  965. might

  966. behold

  967. Jesus

  968. the

  969. word

  970. made

  971. flesh

  972. crucified

  973. risen

  974. and

  975. reigning.

  976. Lord

  977. help us

  978. through the

  979. power of

  980. your spirit

  981. to behold

  982. his glory

  983. and to

  984. receive his

  985. grace.

  986. We pray

  987. this in

  988. his name.

  989. Amen.

  990. Amen.

  991. Amen.

  992. Amen.

  993. Amen.

  994. Amen.

  995. Amen.

  996. Amen.

  997. Amen.

  998. Amen.

  999. Amen.

  1000. Amen.

  1001. Amen.

  1002. Amen.

  1003. Amen.

  1004. Amen.

  1005. Amen.

  1006. Amen.

  1007. Amen.

  1008. Amen.

  1009. Amen.
