  1. As we come to God's Word, let me pray for us.

  2. Father, as we prayed earlier in our service, so now we pray again.

  3. Come, Holy Spirit.

  4. Would you come as we read the Word that you have inspired and preserved through many ages

  5. about our living Lord Jesus, would you come and help us to see you more clearly

  6. and to understand your deep grace for us through your Word?

  7. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  8. All right, Mark chapter 5, verses 1 through 20. Let me read for us.

    Mark 5:1–20

  9. They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.

  10. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him,

  11. out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.

  12. He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.

  13. For he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart,

  14. and he broke the shackles in pieces.

  15. No one had the strength to subdue him.

  16. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out

  17. and cutting himself with stones.

  18. And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.

  19. And crying out with a loud voice, he said,

  20. What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?

  21. I adjure you by God, do not torment me.

  22. For he was saying to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.

  23. And Jesus asked him, What is your name?

  24. And he replied, My name is Legion, for we are many.

  25. And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.

  26. Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,

  27. and they begged him, saying, Send us to the pigs.

  28. Let us enter them.

  29. So he gave them permission.

  30. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs.

  31. And the herd, numbering about 2,000, rushed down the steep bank into the sea

  32. and drowned in the sea.

  33. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country.

  34. And people came to see what it was that had happened.

  35. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man,

  36. the one who had had the Legion sitting there, clothed and in his right mind.

  37. And they were afraid.

  38. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man

  39. and to the pigs.

  40. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.

  41. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him

  42. that he might be with him.

  43. And he did not permit him, but said to him, Go home to your friends

  44. and tell them how much the Lord has done for you

  45. and how he has had mercy on you.

  46. And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis

  47. how much Jesus had done for him.

  48. And everyone marveled.

  49. So if you were here in the fall when we began our series in Mark's Gospel,

  50. you'll remember that Mark wrote his account of the life of Jesus

  51. to answer a few key questions.

  52. Who is Jesus?

  53. Why did he come?

  54. What does it mean to follow him?

  55. And where we left off the story in November

  56. was with Jesus demonstrating his unparalleled power

  57. over the material creation.

  58. At the end of chapter 4, we saw that with just a word,

  59. he calmed a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee.

  60. But here in chapter 5, Jesus and his disciples step out of the boat

  61. to find a different sort of storm.

  62. This storm isn't outside, it's inside.

  63. They meet a man with a violent storm of chaos and destruction inside of him.

  64. And what we learn from this encounter is that Jesus has unparalleled power,

  65. not just over the material world, but over the spiritual world as well.

  66. Mark shows us that Jesus is the Lord of all things seen and unseen.

  67. Now, Mark 5 verses 1 through 20 is perhaps the most detailed account

    Mark 5:1–20

  68. in the Gospels of Jesus healing a person afflicted by demon possession.

  69. So it's a text that brings us face to face with personal spiritual evil

  70. and Jesus' encounter with it.

  71. So as we consider this text together, let's consider first the reality of spiritual evil,

  72. and then we'll look at the gravity of it,

  73. and then finally Jesus' powerful victory over it.

  74. So first, the reality of spiritual evil.

  75. Look at verses 1 and 2.

  76. They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.

  77. That is the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee, which was predominantly a Gentile region.

  78. And when Jesus stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs,

  79. a man with an unclean spirit.

  80. So according to the Bible, there is such a thing as personal spiritual beings.

  81. When God created the world, he didn't just choose to display his glory

  82. through the manifold beauties of a material created order,

  83. but of a spiritual created order as well.

  84. Think of a great composer, right?

  85. Great composers are masters of melody, of course,

  86. but not just melody.

  87. They're masters of harmony as well.

  88. If you think of a piece of music, a great composer can make the notes sound interesting and beautiful,

  89. not just going this way, right?

  90. But they can make the notes sound beautiful and interesting this way, too, on a sheet of music.

  91. So when God wanted to display his glory through the act of creation,

  92. like a great composer, he wasn't just restrained to melody or restrained just to harmony.

  93. His glory overflowed in a material and spiritual order.

  94. He's the maker of heaven and earth, of all things seen and unseen, as the Nicene Creed says.

  95. So according to the Bible, there is such a thing as personal spiritual beings,

  96. angels created by God for his glory.

  97. But among these personal spiritual beings, some rebelled.

  98. And rather than worshiping and serving God, they stand opposed to God and God's kingdom.

  99. The Bible has various names for these fallen angels, unclean spirits, demons, principalities and powers.

  100. And at the head of their rebellion, one called Satan or the devil.

  101. And rather than play the harmony of God's good creation, they seek to disharmonize and destroy.

  102. So according to Scripture, according to Jesus himself, personal spiritual evil is a very real thing.

  103. And for most times and places, this hasn't been a very controversial point.

  104. But you know, maybe for you and me today, it's not so easy to believe something like that.

  105. Maybe you have a hard time accepting this reality of spiritual good and evil.

  106. Well, if that's true, let me offer a few things to consider,

  107. things that have helped me wrap my mind around this reality.

  108. First, we can sometimes think that belief in demons is sort of simplistic or naive.

  109. But actually, you know, the biblical picture isn't simplistic at all.

  110. It's actually quite robust.

  111. You know, you read the Gospels and you'll see,

  112. you'll see there an analysis of the human condition that takes into account the physical

  113. and the emotional and the social and the structural.

  114. None of these things eliminated or ruled out.

  115. They all are considered and given gravity and weight and importance.

  116. But the Bible acknowledges that there is also a spiritual dimension to reality.

  117. We sometimes think that if we admit the reality of spiritual beings,

  118. we'll have to put on blinders to every other aspect of reality.

  119. But that's not true.

  120. In fact, just the opposite.

  121. The mindset that says everything must have a material cause,

  122. that's actually the oversimplification.

  123. Indeed, the Bible gives us a more robust,

  124. a more sophisticated analysis of reality.

  125. It refuses to oversimplify.

  126. Second, we can sometimes think that belief in personal spiritual evil

  127. is somehow primitive or narrow.

  128. But, you know, if you were to travel to many,

  129. if not most places in the world today,

  130. Africa, Asia, Latin America,

  131. you'd find there that the reality of spiritual evil is readily acknowledged.

  132. And surely we wouldn't want to say that all of those cultures or places

  133. are primitive or narrow, would we?

  134. Are you willing to make that sweeping cultural judgment?

  135. Perhaps it's our own culture that's made us narrow-sided.

  136. Perhaps we need to be willing to learn from others.

  137. But third, if we aren't willing to believe in the reality of spiritual evil,

  138. we simply aren't equipped to deal with the depth of what's wrong in the world.

  139. I think a lot of times we're afraid that believing the Bible on this point

  140. will make us superstitious, that is kind of overly believing.

  141. We fear that we'll end up with an overbelief,

  142. an overbelief that everything is the fault of the devil or spiritual forces

  143. and that we'll not take stock of the very real social or psychological

  144. or material causes of brokenness in the world.

  145. But what if there's an equal but opposite danger,

  146. not of being superstitious, of being overbelieving,

  147. but of being substitious, of being underbelieving?

  148. You see, if we only think that the human problem is material or social or psychological,

  149. if we don't see that there's also a very real spiritual dimension

  150. and spiritual battle at work,

  151. then we'll never get to the depth of what's wrong.

  152. And if we never get to the depth of what's wrong,

  153. we'll never get to the sort of freedom that we're longing for.

  154. And as we see in our passage, that's what Jesus has come to bring,

  155. real freedom and wholeness.

  156. So we see first in our text the reality of spiritual evil.

  157. Next, we see the gravity of it.

  158. Let's pick up again in verse 2 and read through verse 5.

  159. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat,

  160. immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.

  161. He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore,

  162. not even with a chain.

  163. For he had often been bound with shackles and chains,

  164. but he wrenched the chains apart and broke the shackles in pieces.

  165. No one had the strength to subdue him.

  166. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains,

  167. he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.

  168. Now, many commentators have pointed out

  169. that what the demons are working toward in this man

  170. is the utter defacing of God's image.

  171. Notice, he's among the tombs,

  172. and he's crying out like an animal.

  173. His humanity is being undone.

  174. So we see here that Satan's goal is to dehumanize

  175. and to denigrate, above all,

  176. the one thing in creation that displays God's glory the best,

  177. the men and women made in God's image.

  178. He truly is the enemy of our souls.

  179. And of course, part of what makes this event so memorable

  180. to the disciples and part of why Mark includes it

  181. in his account of Jesus' life

  182. is because of how grave and desperate

  183. this man's situation really was.

  184. This was no minor spiritual attack.

  185. This was a full onslaught of spiritual darkness.

  186. In fact, as we learn in verse 9,

  187. a whole host of demons had been afflicting this man.

  188. Legion, after all, was the name of a Roman military unit

  189. that numbered upwards sometimes of 6,000 troops.

  190. So just as the Roman legions had conquered

  191. and oppressed the whole of Palestine during this time,

  192. so this demonic legion had conquered and oppressed this man.

  193. But you know, when we read of how grave

  194. and desperate this man's condition was,

  195. we need to be careful.

  196. We need to be careful not to think

  197. that this extreme case has no relevance for us.

  198. Perhaps you've never encountered demonic activity

  199. in such a blatant form.

  200. If not, be thankful you haven't.

  201. But that doesn't mean you and I are immune

  202. from very real spiritual battle.

  203. In 1 Peter 5, 8, the apostle Peter reminds the whole church

  204. to be sober-minded, be watchful.

  205. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around

  206. like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.

  207. In Ephesians 6, 11, the apostle Paul tells every Christian

  208. to put on the whole armor of God

  209. that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

  210. In fact, when we look at this man's condition in Mark 5,

  211. we see there, yes, an aggravated and extreme form,

  212. but we see there two strategies

  213. that Satan uses against every person.

  214. Notice first how the man seems to have supernatural strength.

  215. Chains and shackles can't hold him.

  216. No one has the strength to subdue him.

  217. But what's become seemingly true of this man

  218. through demonic activity

  219. is also a picture of how Satan tempts us to think

  220. in everyday temptation.

  221. Think about what's going on

  222. when you experience temptation.

  223. Isn't it as if,

  224. isn't it as if your internal talk

  225. is saying something like this,

  226. I can do this.

  227. I'm strong enough to handle this.

  228. It won't hurt me.

  229. After all, I deserve this.

  230. Satan wants us to think that we're strong,

  231. that we have the power in ourselves

  232. to do what we choose and want to do.

  233. And he wants to hide from us

  234. the holiness and authority of God.

  235. Will we end up breaking chains and shackles?

  236. Probably not.

  237. But Satan wants us to act

  238. as if we are the authority

  239. that we have the strength and power

  240. to do as we wish.

  241. But as we see here,

  242. temptation and sin

  243. always leads to loneliness and to death.

  244. This man lived among the tombs.

  245. Satan promised him power,

  246. but what was the return?

  247. The return was like a living death.

  248. But notice the second thing in verse 5.

  249. Night and day among the tombs

  250. and on the mountains,

  251. he was always crying out

  252. and cutting himself with stones.

  253. On the one hand,

  254. Satan is a tempter,

  255. trying to get us to believe the lie

  256. that we're strong,

  257. autonomous, self-reliant.

  258. But on the other hand,

  259. Satan is an accuser.

  260. That's literally what the word Satan means,

  261. the accuser.

  262. He accuses us of all our guilt

  263. and failure,

  264. and we end up miserable,

  265. torn up inside,

  266. hating ourselves.

  267. This man was always crying out,

  268. cutting himself with stones.

  269. Satan tries to hide our view

  270. of the mercy and love of God

  271. so that we end up

  272. racked with self-loathing

  273. and despair,

  274. crushed by our own failures.

  275. Do you see either of these dynamics

  276. in your own life,

  277. in your own heart?

  278. On the one hand,

  279. do you hear the talk that says,

  280. do what you need to do.

  281. You deserve it.

  282. Nothing can stop you.

  283. On the other hand,

  284. do you hear the voice that says,

  285. you're worthless.

  286. After all you've done,

  287. anyone could have done that

  288. better than you.

  289. And if we're honest,

  290. we've heard both of those voices.

  291. We've all been in the grip

  292. of spiritual war.

  293. And we all know

  294. just how powerful

  295. the temptation

  296. and the accusation can be.

  297. And what we see

  298. in this poor,

  299. afflicted man in Mark 5

  300. is ultimately

  301. where this road

  302. would lead for all of us

  303. if left to run its course.

  304. It's the road to death.

  305. But in the face

  306. of the reality

  307. and the gravity

  308. of spiritual evil,

  309. what Mark wants us

  310. to see above all else

  311. is Jesus

  312. and his victory

  313. over spiritual evil.

  314. Let's pick up in verse 6.

  315. And when he saw Jesus

  316. from afar,

  317. he ran and fell down

  318. before him.

  319. And crying out

  320. with a loud voice,

  321. he said,

  322. what have you to do

  323. with me, Jesus,

  324. son of the most high,

  325. God?

  326. I adjure you by God.

  327. Do not torment me.

  328. For Jesus was saying to him,

  329. come out of the man,

  330. you unclean spirit.

  331. And Jesus asked him,

  332. what is your name?

  333. He replied,

  334. my name is Legion,

  335. for we're many.

  336. And he begged him

  337. earnestly not to send

  338. them out of the country.

  339. Now a great herd of pigs

  340. was feeding there

  341. on the hillside,

  342. and they begged him,

  343. saying,

  344. send us to the pigs,

  345. let us enter them.

  346. So Jesus gave them permission,

  347. and the unclean spirits

  348. came out

  349. and entered the pigs.

  350. And the herd,

  351. numbering about 2,000,

  352. rushed down the steep bank

  353. into the sea

  354. and drowned in the sea.

  355. Note the contrast

  356. between these verses

  357. and the end of verse 4.

  358. Before Jesus arrived,

  359. no one had the strength

  360. to subdue him.

  361. They tried chains,

  362. they tried shackles,

  363. perhaps to prevent the man

  364. from hurting others,

  365. perhaps to prevent the man

  366. from hurting himself,

  367. and none of it worked.

  368. But then Jesus arrives.

  369. Others had tried

  370. to tie him down externally,

  371. but Jesus liberates him

  372. internally.

  373. And at last,

  374. this man knows

  375. real and true freedom.

  376. And notice,

  377. in this encounter

  378. between Jesus

  379. and the unclean spirits,

  380. there's no contest.

  381. Jesus commands

  382. a whole host of demons

  383. to take flight

  384. as easily as a child

  385. running into a flock

  386. of pigeons.

  387. Poof, they're gone.

  388. In fact,

  389. this legion of demons

  390. can do nothing but beg.

  391. Did you notice

  392. how many times

  393. the text says that?

  394. The demons beg Jesus

  395. not to torment them.

  396. They beg Jesus

  397. to let them enter

  398. the herd of pigs.

  399. There are a whole army

  400. of spiritual evil,

  401. but before Jesus

  402. they can do nothing

  403. but get down

  404. on their knees

  405. and beg.

  406. And when we compare

  407. this account

  408. to other ancient

  409. exorcism accounts

  410. outside of the Bible,

  411. we see something

  412. pretty interesting.

  413. You know,

  414. in other ancient accounts

  415. the people trying

  416. to cast out evil spirits

  417. always sort of call

  418. on a higher power.

  419. The exorcist always evokes

  420. the name of a greater deity

  421. so that they can overcome

  422. the power,

  423. the lesser power

  424. of the evil spirit.

  425. But is this how Jesus works?

  426. No.

  427. Jesus doesn't call

  428. on a higher power.

  429. Never.

  430. In fact,

  431. for Jesus

  432. it doesn't matter

  433. whether it's one demon

  434. or a whole legion

  435. of demons

  436. with his own word.

  437. He puts them in submission

  438. and drives them out.

  439. But of course

  440. there's a curious detail

  441. here,

  442. isn't there?

  443. Jesus' victory

  444. over spiritual evil

  445. and this man's

  446. spiritual freedom

  447. comes with a strange cost.

  448. because Jesus

  449. doesn't just send

  450. the demons fleeing

  451. he permits them

  452. to enter a herd

  453. of pigs

  454. and the demons

  455. subsequently destroy

  456. the whole herd.

  457. Now this is a strange

  458. detail to be sure

  459. and most readers

  460. of Mark's gospel today

  461. sort of scratch their heads

  462. and a lot of us think

  463. oh man

  464. those poor pigs

  465. what did they

  466. ever do wrong?

  467. Right?

  468. But consider what

  469. consider what this

  470. what this would have meant.

  471. consider first

  472. what it tells us

  473. about the demons.

  474. On the one hand

  475. the destruction

  476. of so large

  477. a number of pigs

  478. shows us just how many

  479. demons there were

  480. in this man.

  481. Legion indeed

  482. not quite 6,000

  483. but a frightening host

  484. nonetheless.

  485. On the other hand

  486. the destruction

  487. of the pigs

  488. shows us the destructive

  489. nature of demonic power.

  490. The thief comes

  491. to steal, kill

  492. and destroy

  493. as Jesus says

  494. in John 10.

  495. And here is yet

  496. another proof

  497. of Satan's evil

  498. intent to ruin

  499. God's good creation

  500. not something

  501. to play with.

  502. But consider

  503. what the destruction

  504. of the herd of pigs

  505. would have meant

  506. for the man himself.

  507. You see

  508. the destruction

  509. of the herd

  510. was evidence

  511. that these destructive

  512. forces had been

  513. removed from him

  514. once and for all.

  515. I mean

  516. who knows how long

  517. this man had suffered?

  518. Who knows how long

  519. his fellow townspeople

  520. had lived in fear

  521. of him?

  522. But now

  523. lest any doubted

  524. there was proof

  525. that something radical

  526. had cleansed him

  527. and set him free.

  528. As tangible

  529. and as evidenced

  530. as the missing herd

  531. of pigs

  532. on the hillside.

  533. But consider

  534. what this would have

  535. meant for Jesus.

  536. On the surface

  537. the magnitude

  538. of the miracle

  539. that Jesus had just

  540. performed.

  541. The magnitude

  542. of what Jesus

  543. had just done.

  544. Driving out

  545. a whole legion

  546. of demons.

  547. That is made visible

  548. by permitting

  549. the destruction

  550. of the herd.

  551. You know

  552. it's one thing

  553. to see one man

  554. put in his right mind

  555. as we see later

  556. in this passage.

  557. It's another thing

  558. to have seen

  559. 2,000 animals

  560. crash into the sea.

  561. So this allows us

  562. to see the magnitude

  563. of what Jesus

  564. has just done.

  565. But consider

  566. a little deeper

  567. what the destruction

  568. of this herd

  569. might have meant

  570. for Jesus.

  571. In the first century

  572. a herd of pigs

  573. meant a lot of money.

  574. The people

  575. made their living

  576. from agriculture

  577. after all.

  578. And a whole herd

  579. of pigs

  580. was very valuable.

  581. When the pigs

  582. went charging

  583. over the cliff

  584. the townspeople

  585. were not thinking

  586. oh no

  587. the cute pigs.

  588. Right?

  589. They were thinking

  590. oh no

  591. we just lost

  592. a ton of money.

  593. Someone just

  594. drained our bank account.

  595. So what Jesus

  596. is demonstrating

  597. is that all

  598. the wealth

  599. in the world

  600. doesn't compare

  601. to the worth

  602. of one human soul.

  603. Better

  604. to lose the pigs

  605. and gain the man.

  606. But look even deeper.

  607. In permitting

  608. the destruction

  609. of the herd

  610. Jesus asks

  611. the townspeople

  612. to bear

  613. a bit of a cost

  614. for this man's

  615. restoration.

  616. But don't you see

  617. the even bigger story

  618. that's being played

  619. out here?

  620. Conquering evil

  621. vanquishing

  622. the destructive

  623. powers of darkness

  624. silencing

  625. the accusations

  626. of the evil one

  627. none of this

  628. would come

  629. without an even

  630. greater cost.

  631. It would take

  632. more than the cost

  633. of a herd

  634. of animals

  635. maybe a few months

  636. or years wages

  637. to really conquer

  638. the powers

  639. of darkness

  640. it would cost

  641. nothing less

  642. than the death

  643. of God's own son.

  644. A cost that he

  645. was willing to pay

  646. in love

  647. for you

  648. and for me.

  649. You see

  650. by the end

  651. of Mark's gospel

  652. Jesus

  653. will take

  654. this man's place.

  655. Jesus will be

  656. handed over

  657. to the Romans

  658. and their legions.

  659. Jesus will be

  660. shackled

  661. condemned

  662. and hung up

  663. to die on a cross

  664. amidst the cursed

  665. and the unclean.

  666. He will cry out

  667. his body torn

  668. by the stones

  669. of Roman whips

  670. and Satan

  671. will exhaust

  672. his destructive

  673. evil on Jesus

  674. and his body

  675. will be laid

  676. in a tomb.

  677. Satan will do

  678. his worst

  679. against Jesus

  680. but he will

  681. not win

  682. because by dying

  683. Jesus paid

  684. the cost

  685. for every sin

  686. and every failure

  687. of everyone

  688. who will trust

  689. in him.

  690. And on the third

  691. day

  692. Jesus rose

  693. to prove

  694. that the payment

  695. was made in full

  696. that Satan

  697. was now powerless

  698. and that no

  699. accusation

  700. could ever be made

  701. against his beloved

  702. people ever again.

  703. The victory

  704. at last

  705. had been won

  706. once

  707. and for all.

  708. And if you really

  709. take this victory

  710. seriously

  711. then things

  712. start to change.

  713. Notice first

  714. how the townspeople

  715. respond to Jesus.

  716. It's surprising

  717. isn't it?

  718. In verse 17

  719. they beg him

  720. to leave.

  721. But maybe

  722. it's not that surprising

  723. when you think about it.

  724. After all

  725. Jesus'

  726. redemptive program

  727. had just been

  728. massively costly

  729. to them.

  730. Some folks

  731. just lost

  732. a lot of money

  733. so that one person

  734. could be restored

  735. to the community.

  736. Now according

  737. to the world's economy

  738. that's not a decent

  739. exchange, right?

  740. That's not a profitable

  741. rate of return.

  742. But in Jesus'

  743. economy

  744. things are different.

  745. When Jesus Christ

  746. enters your life

  747. and when the gospel

  748. really starts to take

  749. root in a community

  750. the priorities

  751. will be changed.

  752. Jesus doesn't just

  753. let things remain

  754. the way they are.

  755. The status quo

  756. gets upset.

  757. The old way

  758. of doing things

  759. gets upset

  760. by a new way

  761. of doing things.

  762. There's a new kingdom.

  763. There's a new economy.

  764. There's a new approach

  765. to wealth

  766. and who's important

  767. and who's not important.

  768. Just like he did

  769. with the garrison

  770. social and economic

  771. status quo

  772. if you welcome Jesus

  773. into your life

  774. he will completely

  775. rearrange your normal

  776. way of doing things.

  777. He will change

  778. our priorities

  779. and he will become

  780. our ultimate allegiance.

  781. And as we cling

  782. tighter to him

  783. and as he takes

  784. more and more control

  785. of our life

  786. we start to become

  787. a lot more open handed

  788. with the other things.

  789. But that means

  790. some people

  791. will tell Jesus

  792. to leave.

  793. We'd rather control

  794. things our own way.

  795. Thank you very much.

  796. Sadly that's what

  797. happened on this day

  798. in Mark 5.

  799. But not for everyone.

  800. If you see that

  801. his power is not out

  802. to enslave you

  803. or oppress you

  804. but that it comes

  805. to liberate

  806. redeem

  807. and restore you

  808. when you see

  809. that his power

  810. was displayed

  811. ultimately on the cross

  812. because he loves you

  813. then your response

  814. will be totally different.

  815. When you see

  816. that God loved us

  817. at infinite cost

  818. to himself

  819. then you'll want

  820. to make him

  821. your Lord.

  822. Who else

  823. could lay aside

  824. their infinite power

  825. and privilege

  826. and wealth

  827. who else would do

  828. that to rescue us

  829. when we had done

  830. nothing to deserve it?

  831. And if you see

  832. his power displayed

  833. on the cross

  834. instead of telling

  835. him to leave

  836. you'll want to be

  837. with him forever

  838. and tell everyone

  839. you love about him

  840. just like this man.

  841. You'll want to give him

  842. control of your life

  843. so that his power

  844. will remake you

  845. and reorder your life

  846. into something beautiful.

  847. And like this man

  848. Jesus will dignify you

  849. by sending you

  850. on his mission.

  851. The man after being healed

  852. says Jesus

  853. let me be with you.

  854. Right?

  855. Which reminds us

  856. of an earlier passage

  857. in the gospel

  858. when Jesus calls

  859. the apostles

  860. and said

  861. I'm calling you

  862. to be with me.

  863. And the man says

  864. Jesus let me go

  865. and let me be with you

  866. but Jesus has

  867. a different plan

  868. for this man's life.

  869. The Gerasenes

  870. needed a gospel witness

  871. and this formerly

  872. notorious man

  873. would now be

  874. the equally

  875. unforgettable witness

  876. to the power of Christ.

  877. And like this man

  878. all true Christians

  879. have a story to tell

  880. about what God

  881. has done in their life

  882. and this story

  883. is all about Jesus.

  884. Did you notice

  885. how the passage ends?

  886. Jesus tells the man

  887. to tell everyone

  888. what God had done

  889. and the man obeys

  890. by telling everyone

  891. what Jesus had done.

  892. So how are you responding

  893. to the power of Jesus?

  894. What's keeping you

  895. from giving yourself

  896. to this powerful

  897. and infinitely loving Lord?

  898. This passage tells us

  899. that no matter

  900. how fearful you are

  901. no matter how broken

  902. you are

  903. no matter how ashamed

  904. you feel

  905. Jesus by his power

  906. can save you

  907. and make you

  908. an instrument

  909. of redemption

  910. in his world.

  911. Let's pray together.

  912. Lord Jesus

  913. we pause

  914. and we praise you

  915. for winning

  916. the ultimate victory

  917. over spiritual darkness.

  918. God we look out

  919. at our world

  920. and we still see

  921. so much brokenness

  922. so much evil

  923. that yes

  924. can be explained

  925. by many material causes

  926. and yet we know

  927. that there's also

  928. a great spiritual battle

  929. raging.

  930. But we thank you Lord

  931. that this victory

  932. has been won

  933. and that we need not fear

  934. and that even though

  935. we are called

  936. to put on the armor

  937. each day

  938. to fight this battle

  939. we know that ultimately

  940. in you Christ

  941. it will be a battle

  942. that is victorious.

  943. Lord we pray

  944. for your help

  945. in the midst of temptation

  946. and accusation

  947. help us to remember

  948. the gospel

  949. that you have loved us

  950. with an undying love

  951. and that you have called us

  952. to live holy lives

  953. in service of you.

  954. Lord help us to live

  955. in that freedom

  956. and help us to encourage

  957. one another

  958. on the way.

  959. Lord help us

  960. to run this race

  961. together as a church

  962. proclaiming your victory

  963. like this man

  964. that we see here

  965. in Mark 5.

  966. Lord each of us

  967. has a story

  968. about the great mercy

  969. that you've shown to us.

  970. Help us to publish it

  971. and proclaim it

  972. and be glad.

  973. We ask this in your name

  974. Jesus.

  975. Amen.
