  1. Welcome, all.

  2. If you haven't got one, let me tell you that there's a handout.

  3. Deb, are you here?

  4. Yes.

  5. Deb's here.

  6. I'm legally blind, and I can see some things, but not a lot.

  7. Like, could everybody raise their hands?

  8. Yeah, I only see about half of them.

  9. So anyway, please bear with me.

  10. I know you see half of them if you don't have any.

  11. Because I thought I asked everybody to raise their hands,

  12. and I only saw the left side of the room raise their hands.

  13. So I don't know for sure.

  14. You're absolutely right.

  15. But such is life.

  16. I will never tell.

  17. Okay, okay.

  18. Now, as we go through the class today, we will read some, not all, of the scriptures that are on the handout.

  19. And I'm going to ask those of you who are able and willing to do so.

  20. So when I ask for a scripture to be read, please don't wait for somebody else if you're able and willing.

  21. You know, just dive right in there and say I will or something.

  22. And I'll appreciate that very much.

  23. Well, let's pray.

  24. Heavenly Father, as we gather together in the name of your Son, Jesus,

  25. we ask you to fill us with your Spirit and speak to us.

  26. May we get to know you better and love you better, trust you more,

  27. and live as your faithful children.

  28. Make us, conform us more into the image of your Son, we ask.

  29. Amen.

  30. Several weeks ago, Tyler asked me to teach this class on God's immutability,

  31. one in a series of classes on the attributes of God,

  32. a subsection of what we might call systematic theology.

  33. And a little bit later, I told a friend that I was going to teach on the immutability of God.

  34. And he responded with something like,

  35. oh, that is, can you get God to shut up?

  36. And he made that attempt at humor, you know, thinking of mute, you know,

  37. and those of us who have phones or, you know, participate in Zoom meetings.

  38. And somebody maybe not familiar with systematic theology, you know,

  39. when you speak of immutability, no, I can't mute that person.

  40. And I wish I could.

  41. But what that indicates to me is that the meanings of words change over a period of time.

  42. If you ask somebody in the United States 150 years ago, you know, what immutability means,

  43. they would say, well, it means that whatever you're describing does not change.

  44. But today, that's less clear to a lot of people who we live with.

  45. So much so that the author of the systematic theology that I recently got,

  46. because I can't read much anymore, I got an audible book.

  47. And the author of that book changed the topic in his systematic theology from immutability to unchangeability,

  48. which I think is not a bad thing to do.

  49. And I'm even taking it one step further, changing the title of the class from unchangeability or immutability

  50. to the question, does God change?

  51. Well, however you'd like to think about it, as we go through this study together,

  52. you might be expecting that I will give you a concise and clear conclusion about the subject.

  53. Clean and clear.

  54. And when I got assigned the subject, I thought I'd be able to do that.

  55. Hey, does God change?

  56. No.

  57. You know, how much more simple can it be?

  58. But as I studied it and looked at what the Bible said,

  59. though I think I learned some important and good things,

  60. the goal that I had of tying up, you know, all the loose ends didn't happen.

  61. So, today's lesson might be described better as an exercise in systematic theology that we'll do together

  62. rather than just the presentation of my clear and complete study.

  63. Well, as we talk about change, just to give it some thought context,

  64. as we think about our world, there are some things that don't seem to change much,

  65. like the sun or the stars or a mountain.

  66. And then there are things that seem to change quite a bit, like weather or the news.

  67. People, for the most part, are somewhere in between those.

  68. You know, if we look at our bodies over a period of days or even a few years,

  69. maybe somebody wouldn't detect any change.

  70. Or in our personality over a period of time, they might not detect any change.

  71. But somebody's opinion about something or how they react to a certain impulse, input, might change.

  72. And because the Bible describes God as a person,

  73. that might help us a little bit think about,

  74. when we speak about the question, does God change?

  75. You know, as a person, you know,

  76. does he change in some ways?

  77. Does he not change in any way?

  78. I suggest that that would be a helpful idea to keep in mind.

  79. Well, with that in mind, let's read the first two scriptures that you'll find on your handout.

  80. And would somebody be ready to read the Numbers passage, 2319?

  81. And again, the proper response is yes, if you're able and willing.

  82. Good.

  83. And would somebody else be willing to read that second passage,

  84. several verses, Isaiah 38, 1 through 5?

  85. All right.

  86. Ralph, please read.

  87. Verse 19.

  88. God is not a man that he should lie,

  89. nor a son of man that he should change his mind.

  90. Does he speak and then not act?

  91. Does he promise and not fulfill?

  92. Very good.

  93. Thank you.

  94. I've read the Numbers.

  95. Very good.

  96. Yes.

  97. Feel free to use whatever version you have available to you.

  98. But thank you.

  99. And the other, please read the Isaiah passage.

  100. Sure.

  101. So this is Isaiah 38, 1 through 5.

  102. In those days, Hedekiah became sick and was at the point of death.

  103. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Nema,

  104. came to him and said to him,

  105. Thus says the Lord,

  106. Set your hearts in order, for you shall die,

  107. and you shall not recover.

  108. Then Hezekiah sent his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord,

  109. and said, Please, O Lord,

  110. remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness,

  111. and made a whole heart,

  112. and have done your good in your sight.

  113. And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

  114. Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah.

  115. Go and tell Hezekiah,

  116. Thus says the Lord,

  117. the God of David,

  118. your father.

  119. I have heard your prayer.

  120. I have seen your tears.

  121. Behold, I will add 15 years to your life.

  122. Thank you.

  123. Now,

  124. as some people would look at these two passages,

  125. they would see a tension or a paradox.

  126. Others may not.

  127. But let me tell you what I see.

  128. In the Numbers passage,

  129. it is said of God,

  130. Does he speak and not act?

  131. And I think that means,

  132. Does he say he's going to do something,

  133. and then not do it?

  134. But in the Isaiah passage,

  135. God makes clear to Hezekiah

  136. that he's going to die soon.

  137. He's not going to recover from the illness.

  138. He speaks.

  139. But then,

  140. his action is something else.

  141. He does not,

  142. in a sense,

  143. do what he said he was going to do.

  144. So,

  145. this is an example of the challenge

  146. of doing

  147. systematic theology.

  148. Systematic theology can be thought of

  149. studying

  150. what

  151. all of the Bible

  152. teaches

  153. about a particular topic.

  154. In this case,

  155. the unchangeability of God,

  156. or does God change?

  157. And so,

  158. sometimes,

  159. you have passages in Scripture

  160. which seem to be

  161. in tension

  162. with one another.

  163. For those and other reasons,

  164. systematic theology

  165. is a really good idea

  166. because if you

  167. don't look

  168. at all of the,

  169. what the Bible says

  170. about a topic,

  171. you'll have

  172. unorganized theology

  173. instead of an organized

  174. or systematic

  175. theology.

  176. So,

  177. doing systematic theology

  178. is a good thing,

  179. but unless

  180. you are a genius

  181. and have lots of time

  182. to study the Bible,

  183. you're going to be

  184. at a great disadvantage

  185. if you don't

  186. stand on the shoulders

  187. of the giants

  188. who have gone before you

  189. with regard to

  190. the study of the Bible

  191. and systematic theology.

  192. And so,

  193. I

  194. certainly recommend

  195. when you're studying

  196. a topic like this

  197. to see what others

  198. have said.

  199. And again,

  200. the book

  201. that I

  202. have listened to

  203. on this topic

  204. and was a foundation

  205. for my study

  206. is

  207. Systematic Theology

  208. by Wayne Gruden.

  209. And here

  210. is his

  211. summary statement

  212. about

  213. the unchangeability

  214. of God.

  215. And as I read it,

  216. I'd like you to think

  217. about this question.

  218. Do I think

  219. this is right?

  220. You know,

  221. based on my knowledge

  222. of the Bible

  223. such as it is,

  224. does this sound

  225. like a good summary

  226. of what all of the Bible

  227. teaches

  228. about God

  229. and change?

  230. God is unchanging

  231. in his being,

  232. his perfections,

  233. purposes,

  234. and promises.

  235. Yet,

  236. God does

  237. act and feel,

  238. feel emotions.

  239. I should probably

  240. have somebody else

  241. reading this.

  242. Tyler,

  243. would you be willing

  244. to pick up on this?

  245. Yet,

  246. God does act

  247. and feel emotions

  248. and he acts

  249. and feels differently

  250. in response

  251. to different situations.

  252. Thank you.

  253. All right.

  254. So,

  255. how does that sound

  256. to you?

  257. Do you find yourself

  258. in

  259. strong agreement

  260. with it?

  261. You know,

  262. maybe agreement

  263. or,

  264. nah,

  265. I think there are

  266. some significant errors.

  267. strong agreement

  268. based on your

  269. present thought.

  270. Strong.

  271. Strong.

  272. I have no idea

  273. how many hands

  274. are up now.

  275. Were there a few?

  276. Are there any for,

  277. you know,

  278. not sure?

  279. I'll ask Deb

  280. to tell me.

  281. One.

  282. Okay.

  283. And how many,

  284. no,

  285. I think there are

  286. some real problems

  287. with this.

  288. And I'd almost

  289. raise my hand

  290. on this

  291. at this point

  292. because

  293. when I first read it,

  294. I thought,

  295. yes,

  296. this is good,

  297. but as I

  298. started reading

  299. through scriptures

  300. that Gruden

  301. presented

  302. and others,

  303. I thought,

  304. ah,

  305. boy.

  306. And maybe

  307. the biggest

  308. problem I have

  309. is the word

  310. promise

  311. because,

  312. again,

  313. the meanings

  314. of word

  315. changes

  316. in a culture.

  317. And,

  318. but,

  319. in any case,

  320. whatever your

  321. initial impression,

  322. why don't we

  323. take this

  324. as somebody

  325. who's studied

  326. a lot

  327. and who has

  328. studied other

  329. people who've

  330. studied a lot

  331. and go through

  332. the parts

  333. and see what

  334. we think

  335. the Bible

  336. teaches

  337. about this.

  338. So,

  339. let's start

  340. with

  341. God

  342. does not

  343. change

  344. in his

  345. being.

  346. So,

  347. would somebody

  348. please read

  349. Psalm 102,

  350. 25 through

  351. 27?

  352. I will.

  353. Yes,

  354. thanks.

  355. No one else's?

  356. Okay.

  357. Feel free.

  358. Somebody else

  359. is going to

  360. surely want

  361. to beat you

  362. next time,

  363. but you

  364. have it.

  365. In the

  366. beginning,

  367. you laid

  368. the foundations

  369. of the earth

  370. and the heavens

  371. out of the

  372. work of your

  373. hands.

  374. They will

  375. perish,

  376. but you

  377. remain.

  378. They will

  379. all wear

  380. out like

  381. a garment,

  382. like clothing.

  383. You will

  384. change them

  385. and they

  386. will be

  387. discarded.

  388. But you

  389. remain the

  390. same and

  391. your years

  392. will never

  393. end.

  394. The children

  395. of your

  396. servants

  397. will live

  398. in your

  399. presence.

  400. Their

  401. descendants

  402. will be

  403. established

  404. before you.

  405. Thank you.

  406. So,

  407. to me,

  408. that sounds

  409. like a clear

  410. statement.

  411. God

  412. remains the

  413. same.

  414. And I

  415. read that

  416. and,

  417. but I

  418. was expecting,

  419. well,

  420. actually,

  421. a number

  422. of other

  423. passages

  424. from the

  425. Psalms

  426. or other

  427. parts in

  428. the Bible

  429. because this

  430. idea that

  431. God doesn't

  432. change was

  433. so,

  434. you know,

  435. firmly set

  436. in my

  437. mind.

  438. I thought

  439. there would

  440. be a lot

  441. of texts

  442. that would

  443. explicitly

  444. say this.

  445. But what

  446. Gruden

  447. presents and

  448. what I

  449. could find

  450. only include

  451. the passages

  452. from Hebrews

  453. about which

  454. Jesus is

  455. described

  456. and this

  457. passage from

  458. Psalm 102

  459. is quoted

  460. and it

  461. refers to

  462. Jesus.

  463. Now,

  464. we who

  465. believe that

  466. Jesus is

  467. God would

  468. certainly say

  469. yes,

  470. with regard

  471. to God's

  472. divine nature,

  473. you know,

  474. this is

  475. reaffirmation

  476. that God

  477. doesn't change

  478. and I would

  479. agree with

  480. that.

  481. And then

  482. the second

  483. passage in

  484. Hebrews

  485. says that

  486. Jesus is

  487. the same

  488. yesterday,

  489. today,

  490. and forever.

  491. So,

  492. I think,

  493. ah,

  494. boy,

  495. I expected

  496. more proof

  497. texts,

  498. that is,

  499. texts that

  500. give evidence,

  501. you know,

  502. that God

  503. doesn't change

  504. for this.

  505. But,

  506. the fact that

  507. I accepted

  508. it so easily

  509. makes me think,

  510. yeah,

  511. all that I've

  512. read in the

  513. Bible,

  514. even if it

  515. doesn't,

  516. you know,

  517. there aren't

  518. many passages

  519. that seem

  520. to be

  521. proof texts

  522. in my mind,

  523. still it

  524. resonates with

  525. me.

  526. Like,

  527. there's an

  528. implication of

  529. this,

  530. you know,

  531. over and

  532. over again

  533. throughout

  534. Scripture.

  535. So,

  536. I say,

  537. okay,

  538. yeah,

  539. I'm willing

  540. to accept

  541. that.

  542. Any thoughts

  543. or questions

  544. before we

  545. move on?

  546. Well,

  547. let's look

  548. at

  549. perfections

  550. then.

  551. And,

  552. I didn't

  553. like this

  554. word,

  555. I thought

  556. characteristics

  557. or character

  558. of God

  559. might

  560. communicate

  561. to us

  562. more clearly.

  563. but,

  564. would

  565. somebody

  566. please

  567. read

  568. the

  569. Malachi

  570. passage,

  571. Malachi

  572. 3,

  573. 6 and

  574. 7.

  575. Yeah,

  576. thanks.

  577. Thanks.

  578. So,

  579. what

  580. perfection

  581. of God

  582. is stated

  583. here that

  584. doesn't

  585. change?

  586. What

  587. characteristic?

  588. Faithfulness.

  589. Faithfulness.

  590. And,

  591. that may

  592. be a

  593. really good

  594. answer.

  595. But,

  596. can

  597. Josh or

  598. somebody

  599. else kind

  600. of spell

  601. that out?

  602. How does

  603. this mean

  604. that God

  605. is faithful?

  606. Or,

  607. you know,

  608. what,

  609. how is that

  610. at least

  611. implied?

  612. Because

  613. faithfulness,

  614. I don't

  615. think,

  616. does it

  617. appear in

  618. the passage?

  619. No.

  620. I did

  621. get the

  622. same idea.

  623. Yeah,

  624. good.

  625. Yeah,

  626. this idea,

  627. they're not

  628. consumed

  629. because he

  630. has not

  631. changed,

  632. and so his

  633. promises

  634. have,

  635. he's still

  636. going to

  637. act according

  638. to the

  639. promises

  640. that he

  641. made to

  642. them.

  643. So,

  644. his,

  645. as we

  646. say,

  647. faithfulness

  648. is why

  649. he's not

  650. consuming his

  651. people,

  652. even though

  653. they've

  654. disobeyed

  655. him.

  656. But there

  657. is a,

  658. but there

  659. also is

  660. a condition

  661. like,

  662. return to

  663. me and

  664. I'll

  665. return to

  666. you.

  667. So,

  668. it's not

  669. exactly

  670. paradox.

  671. paradox.

  672. So,

  673. and here's

  674. my systematic,

  675. I think you

  676. guys were all

  677. trying to do

  678. systematic

  679. theology here.

  680. You know,

  681. you're trying

  682. to take this

  683. passage and

  684. put it

  685. together with

  686. all that the

  687. rest of the

  688. Bible says

  689. about this

  690. issue,

  691. you know,

  692. coming to a

  693. clear statement

  694. of the

  695. teaching.

  696. And this

  697. was mine.

  698. God remains

  699. the same

  700. in that

  701. when people

  702. repent,

  703. you know,

  704. he responds

  705. to them.

  706. So,

  707. you know,

  708. by implication

  709. you could say

  710. God is a

  711. forgiving God

  712. and he

  713. doesn't change

  714. with regard

  715. to that.

  716. But there's

  717. some theology

  718. there,

  719. which is fine.

  720. We're doing

  721. systematic

  722. theology.

  723. We're trying

  724. to say,

  725. ah,

  726. okay,

  727. not just

  728. what this

  729. passage

  730. necessarily

  731. states,

  732. but what

  733. it clearly

  734. implies,

  735. what it

  736. means for

  737. us.

  738. So,

  739. and we

  740. have some

  741. other passages

  742. there.

  743. I included

  744. the Lamentations

  745. one,

  746. which again

  747. is not a

  748. statement,

  749. but would

  750. somebody

  751. please read

  752. Lamentations

  753. 322,

  754. which is

  755. the basis

  756. in part

  757. for the

  758. hymn,

  759. Great is

  760. Thy

  761. Faithfulness.

  762. Yes.

  763. Yeah.

  764. So,

  765. it doesn't

  766. say it

  767. never changes,

  768. but at

  769. least it

  770. never

  771. disappears.

  772. It never

  773. ceases to

  774. be.

  775. So,

  776. close.

  777. Well,

  778. the next

  779. perfection,

  780. or rather

  781. aspect of

  782. God,

  783. which is

  784. said not

  785. to change

  786. are his

  787. purposes.

  788. And for

  789. this,

  790. I think

  791. there was

  792. lots of

  793. scriptural

  794. evidence,

  795. very clear,

  796. very direct.

  797. I don't

  798. list all

  799. of them

  800. here,

  801. but would

  802. somebody

  803. please read

  804. Psalm

  805. 38?

  806. Yeah.

  807. 11.

  808. that one.

  809. Yeah,

  810. that one.

  811. Thank you.

  812. Thanks.

  813. Thanks.

  814. All right.

  815. And would

  816. somebody read

  817. the several

  818. verses listed

  819. there for

  820. Ephesians?

  821. Ephesians 1,

    Ephesians 1:4

  822. verse 4,

  823. for he chose

  824. us in him

  825. before the

  826. creation of

  827. the world

  828. to be holy

  829. and religious

  830. in his sight.

  831. And then

  832. verse 11

  833. is in him

  834. we were

  835. also chosen,

  836. having been

  837. predestined

  838. according to

  839. the plan

  840. of him

  841. who works

  842. out everything

  843. in conformity

  844. with the

  845. purpose of

  846. his will.

  847. And then

  848. did you want

  849. also?

  850. Yeah.

  851. Three,

  852. nine,

  853. two,

  854. three,

  855. nine,

  856. to a letter.

  857. In the

  858. middle of

  859. a sentence

  860. it says,

  861. and to

  862. make plain

  863. to everyone

  864. the administration

  865. of this

  866. mystery,

  867. which for

  868. ages past

  869. was kept

  870. hidden in

  871. God,

  872. who created

  873. all things.

  874. His intent

  875. was that

  876. now,

  877. through the

  878. church,

  879. the manifold

  880. wisdom of

  881. God should

  882. be made

  883. known to

  884. the rulers

  885. and authorities

  886. in the

  887. heavenly realms

  888. according to

  889. his eternal

  890. purpose that

  891. he accomplished

  892. in Christ

  893. Jesus our

  894. Lord.

  895. Yeah.

  896. So,

  897. I think

  898. this teaching

  899. is very

  900. well supported

  901. in scripture.

  902. And maybe

  903. part of the

  904. reason for

  905. that is it

  906. has great

  907. practical

  908. importance for

  909. us.

  910. You know,

  911. what if

  912. God's

  913. purpose

  914. changed?

  915. You know,

  916. yes,

  917. at one

  918. time,

  919. my purpose

  920. was that

  921. everyone in

  922. Christ would

  923. be glorified.

  924. But the

  925. plan has

  926. changed.

  927. And no,

  928. you know,

  929. you experience

  930. the Holy Spirit

  931. in this life,

  932. but then you

  933. die and that's

  934. the end of

  935. you.

  936. That's my

  937. new purpose.

  938. So,

  939. it's good

  940. to know.

  941. I'm so

  942. glad to

  943. have this

  944. knowledge of

  945. God that

  946. his purposes

  947. don't change,

  948. including his

  949. purpose for

  950. those of us

  951. who are in

  952. Christ.

  953. Now,

  954. promise.

  955. I'd like

  956. both of

  957. these passages

  958. read,

  959. the Numbers

  960. passage and

  961. the 1st

  962. Samuel passage.

  963. So,

  964. somebody please

  965. read Numbers.

  966. In fact,

  967. I think we've

  968. read it before,

  969. but bears

  970. repeating.

  971. God is not

  972. man that he

  973. should lie,

  974. or a son of

  975. man that he

  976. should change

  977. his mind.

  978. Has he said

  979. it and will

  980. he not do

  981. it, or has

  982. he spoken

  983. and will

  984. he not

  985. fulfill it?

  986. Thank you.

  987. And,

  988. my

  989. memory is

  990. that at

  991. least in

  992. one translation

  993. the word

  994. promise is

  995. used.

  996. But,

  997. even if it

  998. isn't used,

  999. it's implied

  1000. there.

  1001. And now,

  1002. will somebody

  1003. please read

  1004. 1st Samuel

  1005. 2.30.

  1006. Got it.

  1007. Therefore,

  1008. the Lord,

  1009. the God of

  1010. Israel declares,

  1011. I promised

  1012. that your

  1013. house,

  1014. the house of

  1015. your father

  1016. should go in

  1017. and out

  1018. before me

  1019. forever.

  1020. But now,

  1021. the Lord

  1022. declares,

  1023. far be it

  1024. from me.

  1025. For those

  1026. who honor

  1027. me,

  1028. I will

  1029. honor,

  1030. and those

  1031. who despise

  1032. me shall

  1033. be lightly

  1034. esteemed.

  1035. Now,

  1036. at least on

  1037. first reading

  1038. to me,

  1039. it sounds

  1040. like God

  1041. made a

  1042. promise,

  1043. and he's

  1044. saying,

  1045. no,

  1046. not anymore.

  1047. And,

  1048. there are

  1049. various ways

  1050. we could

  1051. understand that.

  1052. one is

  1053. what is

  1054. meant by

  1055. promise.

  1056. You know,

  1057. that we

  1058. might see

  1059. different

  1060. levels of

  1061. a promise,

  1062. like an

  1063. oath,

  1064. you know,

  1065. is one

  1066. level of

  1067. a promise,

  1068. or just

  1069. saying

  1070. something

  1071. might be

  1072. seen as

  1073. a promise.

  1074. And,

  1075. that certainly

  1076. applies to

  1077. people.

  1078. Does it

  1079. apply to

  1080. God?

  1081. You know,

  1082. are there

  1083. different

  1084. kinds of

  1085. promises?

  1086. And,

  1087. I'm not,

  1088. I certainly

  1089. don't understand

  1090. a lot of

  1091. that long

  1092. passage,

  1093. Hebrews 6

  1094. through 7.

  1095. But,

  1096. as I read

  1097. it,

  1098. I get the

  1099. idea,

  1100. you know,

  1101. that it's

  1102. applying,

  1103. it's stating

  1104. that there

  1105. are promises,

  1106. and then there

  1107. are promises.

  1108. And,

  1109. it applies

  1110. that,

  1111. for me,

  1112. in

  1113. unexpected

  1114. way.

  1115. So,

  1116. you know,

  1117. if I were

  1118. editing Gruden

  1119. here,

  1120. you know,

  1121. I'd cross

  1122. out promises

  1123. because,

  1124. you know,

  1125. I'm just

  1126. not sure

  1127. that leaving

  1128. that statement

  1129. as it is

  1130. is the

  1131. most helpful

  1132. summary for

  1133. me of what

  1134. the Bible

  1135. teaches.

  1136. Maybe I'm

  1137. wrong.

  1138. Very likely,

  1139. but,

  1140. you know,

  1141. that's where I

  1142. am in my

  1143. current study.

  1144. Well,

  1145. here we

  1146. are,

  1147. and we

  1148. have,

  1149. well,

  1150. just before

  1151. we leave

  1152. the areas

  1153. in which

  1154. Gruden

  1155. says God

  1156. is unchanging,

  1157. let's talk

  1158. about application.

  1159. What

  1160. difference

  1161. does it make

  1162. to us,

  1163. here and

  1164. now,

  1165. that God

  1166. doesn't change

  1167. in the way

  1168. the Bible

  1169. says he

  1170. does not

  1171. change.

  1172. I think

  1173. what's interesting

  1174. to us is that

  1175. we're able to

  1176. orient ourselves

  1177. to God.

  1178. It's not like

  1179. we think that

  1180. who God is

  1181. today,

  1182. and we

  1183. orient ourselves

  1184. in our purposes

  1185. and priorities

  1186. to him,

  1187. but that,

  1188. oh,

  1189. man,

  1190. tomorrow is

  1191. different.

  1192. We have to

  1193. do this

  1194. process.

  1195. Because he's

  1196. unchanging,

  1197. we are able

  1198. to orient

  1199. our being,

  1200. not perfection,

  1201. imperfections,

  1202. purposes and

  1203. promises around

  1204. his character

  1205. and nature

  1206. rather than

  1207. around our

  1208. own.

  1209. We can,

  1210. and boy,

  1211. we should.

  1212. Because it's

  1213. the right

  1214. thing to do,

  1215. because we

  1216. have promises

  1217. in the Bible

  1218. that God

  1219. will bless

  1220. those who

  1221. do just

  1222. what was

  1223. said.

  1224. Yeah.

  1225. Matt,

  1226. drawing on

  1227. something you

  1228. said earlier

  1229. about we

  1230. don't have

  1231. to kind

  1232. of wonder

  1233. whether God's

  1234. going to come

  1235. through because

  1236. of his fixed

  1237. purposes.

  1238. Yeah.

  1239. I think that

  1240. practically that

  1241. remains a lot

  1242. of fear,

  1243. and it really

  1244. engenders

  1245. faith,

  1246. trust,

  1247. trust,

  1248. really.

  1249. do you

  1250. know anybody

  1251. who,

  1252. you know,

  1253. seems to

  1254. have the

  1255. habit of

  1256. saying they'll

  1257. do something

  1258. and then

  1259. doesn't do

  1260. it?

  1261. God is

  1262. not like

  1263. that.

  1264. And that

  1265. is a good

  1266. thing.

  1267. Joy,

  1268. peace,

  1269. as we

  1270. meditate on

  1271. that.

  1272. all right,

  1273. well,

  1274. we will

  1275. move on,

  1276. and the

  1277. next part

  1278. of Gruden's

  1279. summary is

  1280. that,

  1281. hmm,

  1282. that's not

  1283. what I want.

  1284. Okay,

  1285. here it is.

  1286. God,

  1287. hmm,

  1288. I'm not

  1289. reading this.

  1290. Okay,

  1291. can somebody

  1292. read the

  1293. yet?

  1294. That's good,

  1295. right there.

  1296. Now,

  1297. you might

  1298. wonder,

  1299. you know,

  1300. what's the

  1301. big insight

  1302. here?

  1303. Why,

  1304. in this

  1305. section or

  1306. description of

  1307. God's

  1308. unchangeability,

  1309. does Gruden

  1310. feel that it's

  1311. important to

  1312. say,

  1313. God

  1314. acts,

  1315. God

  1316. feels

  1317. emotion,

  1318. unchangeable

  1319. and I

  1320. think,

  1321. pretty sure,

  1322. the reason

  1323. that he

  1324. puts that

  1325. in there

  1326. is because

  1327. in the

  1328. history of

  1329. theology,

  1330. including the

  1331. present,

  1332. there are

  1333. people who

  1334. say things

  1335. like,

  1336. you know,

  1337. if God

  1338. really doesn't

  1339. change,

  1340. then he

  1341. can't act

  1342. or feel.

  1343. You know,

  1344. theologically

  1345. or philosophically

  1346. speaking,

  1347. you know,

  1348. if we say

  1349. that God

  1350. is unchanging,

  1351. kind of like

  1352. a mountain,

  1353. you know,

  1354. it doesn't

  1355. act,

  1356. it doesn't

  1357. feel,

  1358. it's frozen

  1359. in time

  1360. or in

  1361. space,

  1362. and if it

  1363. were to do

  1364. something,

  1365. then that

  1366. would change

  1367. it.

  1368. You know,

  1369. if it

  1370. experienced

  1371. an avalanche,

  1372. then it

  1373. will have

  1374. changed.

  1375. changed.

  1376. So,

  1377. what

  1378. Gruden,

  1379. I think,

  1380. is responding

  1381. to is

  1382. something that

  1383. can be

  1384. called,

  1385. hmm,

  1386. does anybody

  1387. see?

  1388. Process

  1389. theology,

  1390. which says,

  1391. no,

  1392. we really

  1393. can't say

  1394. that God

  1395. doesn't

  1396. change,

  1397. because then

  1398. he couldn't

  1399. act or

  1400. feel.

  1401. even some

  1402. really good

  1403. evangelicals

  1404. maybe get a

  1405. little bit of

  1406. this,

  1407. even though,

  1408. and they may be

  1409. right.

  1410. For example,

  1411. one of my

  1412. favorite professors

  1413. at the seminary I

  1414. went to many

  1415. years ago,

  1416. said that God

  1417. really never felt

  1418. grief.

  1419. And so,

  1420. when talking about

  1421. do not grieve the

  1422. Holy Spirit,

  1423. that passage,

  1424. he would say,

  1425. you know,

  1426. now God has

  1427. things planned

  1428. from the

  1429. beginning,

  1430. he knows,

  1431. you know,

  1432. the greater good

  1433. that's coming

  1434. through suffering,

  1435. so he really

  1436. never feels

  1437. grief.

  1438. And so,

  1439. we could say,

  1440. the author

  1441. there,

  1442. Paul,

  1443. you know,

  1444. didn't really

  1445. mean that God

  1446. could feel grief,

  1447. but speaking of

  1448. God as if he

  1449. were a person,

  1450. you know,

  1451. if we did this

  1452. to a person,

  1453. they would feel

  1454. grief,

  1455. so you don't

  1456. want to do

  1457. it.

  1458. And,

  1459. you know,

  1460. somehow it's

  1461. saying,

  1462. so we shouldn't

  1463. do this either,

  1464. even though God

  1465. really can't be

  1466. grieved.

  1467. And it had that

  1468. sense that,

  1469. you know,

  1470. God has the

  1471. end plan from

  1472. the beginning,

  1473. he knows it has

  1474. a great good,

  1475. and so he really

  1476. can't grieve

  1477. about,

  1478. you know,

  1479. the best world,

  1480. you know,

  1481. that's come to

  1482. be.

  1483. Well,

  1484. there may be

  1485. some logic to

  1486. that,

  1487. but...

  1488. doesn't he

  1489. express grief

  1490. over and

  1491. over again

  1492. as he interacts

  1493. with the nation

  1494. of Israel

  1495. and the Old

  1496. Testament?

  1497. Probably.

  1498. And then,

  1499. also,

  1500. with Jesus,

  1501. you know,

  1502. that,

  1503. you know,

  1504. we can just

  1505. look at Jesus

  1506. to see,

  1507. you know,

  1508. his emotions

  1509. and his

  1510. feelings

  1511. that are

  1512. expressed

  1513. throughout the

  1514. apostles.

  1515. so here

  1516. was my

  1517. favorite

  1518. theology

  1519. professor

  1520. at Gordon

  1521. Conwell

  1522. Seminary,

  1523. you know,

  1524. saying something,

  1525. and at least

  1526. from my

  1527. perspective,

  1528. he had

  1529. this clear

  1530. understanding

  1531. of God

  1532. based on

  1533. an awful

  1534. lot of

  1535. scripture,

  1536. and then

  1537. he took

  1538. those parts

  1539. of scripture

  1540. that didn't

  1541. seem to

  1542. quite fit

  1543. with that

  1544. and conformed

  1545. them to

  1546. his systematic

  1547. theology.

  1548. You know,

  1549. I agree

  1550. with what

  1551. Debbie just

  1552. said.

  1553. Now,

  1554. it could

  1555. be that

  1556. God is

  1557. beyond our

  1558. understanding,

  1559. and that,

  1560. you know,

  1561. what the

  1562. Bible says

  1563. about him,

  1564. there may be

  1565. things,

  1566. just like in

  1567. science and

  1568. in nature,

  1569. you know,

  1570. as we study,

  1571. as I've

  1572. studied physics,

  1573. you know,

  1574. I know there

  1575. are things

  1576. about the

  1577. way the world

  1578. works that

  1579. just,

  1580. don't make

  1581. sense,

  1582. that we

  1583. can't

  1584. logically

  1585. put together.

  1586. It's beyond

  1587. us.

  1588. And so,

  1589. I think it's

  1590. good to do

  1591. systematic

  1592. theology,

  1593. but if we

  1594. sometimes come

  1595. away and

  1596. say,

  1597. you know,

  1598. this didn't

  1599. seem to

  1600. work out

  1601. as I

  1602. hoped,

  1603. you know,

  1604. that may

  1605. be all

  1606. right.

  1607. It may

  1608. be that,

  1609. well,

  1610. it is.

  1611. Somebody could

  1612. probably quote

  1613. the end of

  1614. Romans 11,

  1615. you know.

  1616. Quick comment,

  1617. and you mentioned

  1618. before that if

  1619. you don't have

  1620. a systematic

  1621. theology,

  1622. you're incredibly

  1623. imbalanced.

  1624. Yes!

  1625. And if you're,

  1626. your ministry

  1627. will be incredibly

  1628. imbalanced because

  1629. you're going to

  1630. get to a

  1631. Hebrew 6 passage

  1632. and you'll say

  1633. one thing,

  1634. but then you'll

  1635. say the

  1636. completely opposite

  1637. thing when you

  1638. get to another

  1639. passage and

  1640. you need to,

  1641. you need to

  1642. understand how,

  1643. you know,

  1644. I like the

  1645. thing,

  1646. the idea of

  1647. New York City,

1648. you have to have a

  1649. map of the entire

  1650. city to understand

  1651. how things connect

  1652. together,

  1653. you know.

  1654. Yeah!

  1655. There's no

  1656. contradictions in

  1657. the Bible,

  1658. but when you

  1659. are contradicting

  1660. yourself week

  1661. after week based

  1662. on the text

  1663. you're getting

  1664. to,

  1665. I think you're

  1666. becoming incredibly

  1667. imbalanced.

  1668. People are,

  1669. you know,

  1670. where is this guy

  1671. going?

  1672. Where is he

  1673. going?

  1674. I don't know.

  1675. Yes!

  1676. So systematic

  1677. theology I think

  1678. helps to see the

  1679. entire Bible and

  1680. how it all fits

  1681. together like a

  1682. big map of Europe

  1683. and like these are

  1684. how it's situated,

  1685. but you know,

  1686. sometimes the map

  1687. has to change if

  1688. you understand the

  1689. Bible's, you know,

  1690. the Bible's an error

  1691. and not our

  1692. systematic theology

  1693. and sometimes our

  1694. systematic theology

  1695. needs to be changed

  1696. based on what the

  1697. scripture is saying

  1698. and over the world.

  1699. Yes!

  1700. And I remember

  1701. in one of my

  1702. philosophy classes,

  1703. the teacher said,

  1704. now,

  1705. you can criticize

  1706. an author by saying,

  1707. I don't understand

  1708. what they're saying

  1709. here.

  1710. And sometimes

  1711. that's a valid

  1712. criticism,

  1713. except if you're

  1714. stupid and,

  1715. you know,

  1716. other people

  1717. understand it,

  1718. you know,

  1719. but you just use

  1720. the excuse,

  1721. I don't understand

  1722. it.

  1723. So with regard to

  1724. some of these

  1725. tensions,

  1726. you know,

  1727. there are some

  1728. things I look at

  1729. and I say,

  1730. I just can't make

  1731. sense of that.

  1732. And for right now,

  1733. I just have to

  1734. leave it.

  1735. And other people

  1736. look at it and

  1737. they say,

  1738. no,

  1739. I really think I

  1740. understand how

  1741. these things fit

  1742. together.

  1743. And they may be

  1744. right.

  1745. But,

  1746. you know,

  1747. if we don't have

  1748. it all put

  1749. together,

  1750. you know,

  1751. I think it's,

  1752. at least under

  1753. some circumstances,

  1754. good to acknowledge

  1755. that.

  1756. So,

  1757. that's one of the

  1758. challenges.

  1759. Now,

  1760. where are we

  1761. here?

  1762. Okay,

  1763. the other thing,

  1764. the other

  1765. reason why

  1766. another thing

  1767. kind of related

  1768. to process

  1769. theology is

  1770. what was

  1771. somewhat popular

  1772. in some parts

  1773. of evangelical

  1774. theology,

  1775. like in the

  1776. 1990s,

  1777. the openness

  1778. of God.

  1779. And with

  1780. regard to

  1781. passages

  1782. like

  1783. 1 Samuel 15,

  1784. 10,

  1785. that's probably

  1786. written down

  1787. there several

  1788. times,

  1789. but could

  1790. somebody please

  1791. read 1 Samuel

  1792. 15,

  1793. 10.

  1794. Yes.

  1795. 15,

  1796. 10.

  1797. Give it a shot.

  1798. The word of the

  1799. Lord came to

  1800. Samuel.

  1801. I regret that I

  1802. have made Saul

  1803. king.

  1804. Good.

  1805. He has turned

  1806. back from following

  1807. me and has not

  1808. performed my

  1809. commandment.

  1810. Okay.

  1811. Samuel was angry

  1812. and he cried

  1813. to the Lord

  1814. on him.

  1815. I'm just

  1816. impressed that

  1817. Samuel wasn't

  1818. ready to give

  1819. up on Saul

  1820. yet.

  1821. Recently,

  1822. you know,

  1823. I heard

  1824. somebody say

  1825. about another

  1826. Christian,

  1827. you know,

  1828. they just

  1829. aren't doing

  1830. what they

  1831. should do.

  1832. You know,

  1833. how can I

  1834. get them

  1835. to change?

  1836. And I

  1837. think that's

  1838. what Samuel

  1839. was praying

  1840. or concerned

  1841. about.

  1842. You know,

  1843. how can I

  1844. get Saul

  1845. to change?

  1846. How can I

  1847. get God

  1848. to change?

  1849. I think,

  1850. but the

  1851. main point

  1852. was that

  1853. first thing.

  1854. I regret

  1855. that I

  1856. made Saul

  1857. king.

  1858. This is

  1859. how the

  1860. openness of

  1861. God

  1862. treatment

  1863. would come.

  1864. Now,

  1865. God can

  1866. know everything,

  1867. king,

  1868. but he

  1869. chooses

  1870. not to

  1871. know some

  1872. things about

  1873. the future.

  1874. So,

  1875. God

  1876. chose

  1877. to make

  1878. Saul

  1879. king,

  1880. but he

  1881. did not

  1882. choose to

  1883. access his

  1884. possible information

  1885. about the

  1886. future,

  1887. and didn't

  1888. know exactly

  1889. how things

  1890. were going to

  1891. turn out.

  1892. And so,

  1893. when Saul

  1894. disobeyed God,

  1895. Saul regretted it,

  1896. or some

  1897. translations may

  1898. say, you

  1899. know, he

  1900. repented that

  1901. he made Saul

  1902. king.

  1903. Words, both

  1904. of which,

  1905. usually for us,

  1906. include some

  1907. significant change

  1908. or lack of

  1909. knowledge.

  1910. and so,

  1911. this is how

  1912. the openness

  1913. of God people

  1914. treated passages

  1915. like this.

  1916. They dealt

  1917. with the

  1918. tension by

  1919. saying,

  1920. well, maybe

  1921. God chose

  1922. not to know

  1923. what Saul

  1924. was going to

  1925. do, and

  1926. then he

  1927. really, you

  1928. know, this

  1929. is a very

  1930. plain, accurate

  1931. description of

  1932. how God

  1933. felt when

  1934. Saul

  1935. disobeyed

  1936. over and

  1937. over again.

  1938. well, that

  1939. is maybe a

  1940. valid attempt

  1941. to try and

  1942. do justice

  1943. to what that

  1944. passage says,

  1945. and I think,

  1946. you know, to

  1947. the Hebrew

  1948. that lies behind

  1949. it, you know,

  1950. and all those

  1951. kinds of good

  1952. study things.

  1953. In my mind,

  1954. it, you

  1955. know, solves

  1956. one problem

  1957. and introduces

  1958. a thousand

  1959. others.

  1960. So, you

  1961. know, again,

  1962. systematic

  1963. theology.

  1964. I don't think

  1965. this is a good

  1966. way to go.

  1967. It doesn't

  1968. really help

  1969. us in the

  1970. end.

  1971. So...

  1972. The openness

  1973. of God

  1974. is not the

  1975. good way

  1976. to go.

  1977. Thank you

  1978. for that

  1979. clarification.

  1980. Yes, yes.

  1981. That's my

  1982. opinion.

  1983. And I

  1984. don't encourage

  1985. any of you

  1986. to study that

  1987. unless you

  1988. have a special

  1989. reason for

  1990. that.

  1991. Okay, so,

  1992. but there

  1993. are a number

  1994. of passages

  1995. in Scripture

  1996. where,

  1997. especially if

  1998. you go to

  1999. King James,

  2000. you know,

  2001. say God

  2002. repented,

  2003. or God

  2004. relented,

  2005. or God

  2006. regretted,

  2007. and those

  2008. are dealt

  2009. with further

  2010. down.

  2011. But here

  2012. we are,

  2013. near the end

  2014. of our

  2015. class.

  2016. So,

  2017. how should

  2018. we sum

  2019. up here?

  2020. one,

  2021. we have

  2022. the

  2023. repentance

  2024. principle,

  2025. as I

  2026. describe it,

  2027. spelled out

  2028. in Scripture

  2029. in that

  2030. Ezekiel

  2031. passage,

  2032. and in

  2033. Jeremiah,

  2034. where it

  2035. clearly says,

  2036. if I say

  2037. I'm going

  2038. to punish

  2039. somebody,

  2040. and they

  2041. repent,

  2042. then I'm

  2043. not going

  2044. to punish

  2045. them.

  2046. So,

  2047. in that

  2048. sense,

  2049. God's not

  2050. going to

  2051. change,

  2052. you know,

  2053. if that

  2054. happens.

  2055. But his

  2056. apparent

  2057. plans for

  2058. a person

  2059. seem to

  2060. change,

  2061. at least

  2062. from a

  2063. human

  2064. perspective.

  2065. Or,

  2066. he says,

  2067. in that

  2068. same Ezekiel

  2069. passage,

  2070. if there's

  2071. a good

  2072. man,

  2073. you know,

  2074. and I

  2075. say he's

  2076. going to

  2077. live,

  2078. but he

  2079. starts

  2080. sinning,

  2081. then he's

  2082. going to

  2083. die.

  2084. God.

  2085. So,

  2086. that,

  2087. I think,

  2088. fits in

  2089. very well

  2090. with that

  2091. next part.

  2092. Tyler,

  2093. could you

  2094. read that

  2095. second part

  2096. all again

  2097. is fine.

  2098. With the

  2099. change in

  2100. response to

  2101. prayer?

  2102. No,

  2103. I'm sorry,

  2104. in Gruden's

  2105. summary statement.

  2106. Yet,

  2107. because,

  2108. right near

  2109. the front.

  2110. Okay,

  2111. God is

  2112. unchanging

  2113. in his

  2114. being

  2115. perfections?

  2116. I think

  2117. I can

  2118. read this.

  2119. A little

  2120. bit later

  2121. down there,

  2122. I say,

  2123. God acts

  2124. and feels

  2125. differently

  2126. in response

  2127. to different

  2128. situations.

  2129. So,

  2130. from our

  2131. perspective,

  2132. you know,

  2133. God's

  2134. plans

  2135. seem to

  2136. change,

  2137. because he

  2138. says one

  2139. thing's going

  2140. to happen,

  2141. the person

  2142. changes,

  2143. situation

  2144. changes,

  2145. and then

  2146. he appears

  2147. to change

  2148. his mind.

  2149. And,

  2150. let's see

  2151. here.

  2152. And,

  2153. there's a

  2154. lot of

  2155. interesting

  2156. stories about

  2157. that.

  2158. Likewise,

  2159. we have

  2160. stories

  2161. where,

  2162. let's see,

  2163. I think there's

  2164. a heading that

  2165. says something

  2166. about change

  2167. in regard

  2168. to prayer.

  2169. And,

  2170. there's a

  2171. lot of

  2172. examples

  2173. listed.

  2174. Sometimes,

  2175. God

  2176. changes his

  2177. apparent

  2178. plans in

  2179. response to

  2180. prayer.

  2181. Sometimes,

  2182. he doesn't.

  2183. And,

  2184. sometimes,

  2185. it,

  2186. to me,

  2187. is clear

  2188. why he

  2189. does that,

  2190. and other

  2191. times,

  2192. it's not

  2193. so clear.

  2194. I want

  2195. things to

  2196. be clear.

  2197. I want,

  2198. you know,

  2199. I want the

  2200. Bible to

  2201. read like a

  2202. physics textbook

  2203. where,

  2204. you know,

  2205. each word

  2206. means the

  2207. same thing,

  2208. you know,

  2209. in every

  2210. part of the

  2211. book.

  2212. But,

  2213. God chose,

  2214. I believe for

  2215. very good

  2216. reasons,

  2217. not to

  2218. write the

  2219. Bible like a

  2220. physics textbook.

  2221. you know,

  2222. he,

  2223. because a

  2224. lot of

  2225. people don't

  2226. like physics,

  2227. you know.

  2228. But,

  2229. anyway.

  2230. I have a

  2231. quick comment.

  2232. Yes.

  2233. I agree,

  2234. which helps

  2235. me,

  2236. is a lot

  2237. of the

  2238. times,

  2239. God says

  2240. he's going

  2241. to do

  2242. something,

  2243. but there's

  2244. an implied

  2245. conditional

  2246. clause at

  2247. the end.

  2248. Exactly.

  2249. Yes.

  2250. I'm going

  2251. to do

  2252. this unless

  2253. you repent.

  2254. Yes.

  2255. That's what

  2256. happened with

  2257. Jonah and

  2258. Nineveh.

  2259. Yes.

  2260. Sometimes,

  2261. God said,

  2262. I'm going

  2263. to do it,

  2264. but he

  2265. will,

  2266. he will,

  2267. revert his

  2268. wrath if

  2269. people repent.

  2270. Sometimes,

  2271. not actually

  2272. listed in

  2273. what God

  2274. says,

  2275. but it's

  2276. implied.

  2277. And Jonah

  2278. three is

  2279. just a

  2280. wonderful,

  2281. heartwarming

  2282. example of

  2283. that.

  2284. In my

  2285. opinion,

  2286. if you

  2287. want a

  2288. special

  2289. blessing

  2290. sometime,

  2291. read

  2292. Jonah

  2293. three.

  2294. So,

  2295. are you

  2296. thinking of

  2297. that as

  2298. a small

  2299. print at

  2300. the end

  2301. of a

  2302. contract?

  2303. You

  2304. could think

  2305. of it that

  2306. way.

  2307. But the

  2308. issue is,

  2309. in the

  2310. Bible at

  2311. least,

  2312. sometimes the

  2313. small print

  2314. doesn't seem

  2315. to be

  2316. there.

  2317. You have

  2318. to find

  2319. it someplace

  2320. else.

  2321. But that's

  2322. okay,

  2323. I think,

  2324. once I

  2325. understand that,

  2326. you know what,

  2327. you never get

  2328. the whole story.

  2329. You know,

  2330. if somebody

  2331. were trying to

  2332. record what

  2333. happened in

  2334. the Sunday

  2335. school class

  2336. today,

  2337. you know,

  2338. they probably

  2339. would include

  2340. how many

  2341. times somebody

  2342. breathed and

  2343. how many

  2344. times,

  2345. you know,

  2346. somebody else

  2347. twitched.

  2348. And sometimes

  2349. those are

  2350. meaningful,

  2351. sometimes they're

  2352. not.

  2353. You never

  2354. get the

  2355. whole story.

  2356. You can't.

  2357. Because it would

  2358. take forever,

  2359. or almost,

  2360. you know,

  2361. to read it.

  2362. So everything

  2363. is abridged.

  2364. But God

  2365. has abridged

  2366. his description

  2367. of reality

  2368. in the Bible

  2369. in a wonderful

  2370. way so that

  2371. we are able

  2372. to read it

  2373. and understand

  2374. it and get

  2375. truth from it

  2376. and apply it

  2377. to our lives.

  2378. And so

  2379. here's where

  2380. I want

  2381. to

  2382. end up.

  2383. under

  2384. applications

  2385. at the

  2386. end.

  2387. We've

  2388. already

  2389. looked at

  2390. the

  2391. Malachi

  2392. passage,

  2393. which,

  2394. you know,

  2395. I could

  2396. summarize by

  2397. saying,

  2398. because God

  2399. doesn't change,

  2400. you and your

  2401. present condition

  2402. should change,

  2403. and in response

  2404. to that,

  2405. God will

  2406. change what

  2407. he's doing

  2408. in and around

  2409. you.

  2410. so

  2411. that

  2412. is good

  2413. news,

  2414. I would say.

  2415. There's always

  2416. a way back

  2417. to God.

  2418. And then

  2419. you have

  2420. those seeming

  2421. examples in

  2422. the Bible

  2423. where there

  2424. aren't.

  2425. But if we're

  2426. worried about

  2427. getting back

  2428. to God,

  2429. you know,

  2430. I think,

  2431. well,

  2432. anyway,

  2433. I'm happy

  2434. about it.

  2435. Finally,

  2436. Psalm 102.

  2437. Some years

  2438. ago,

  2439. I read

  2440. Psalm 102,

  2441. and I

  2442. thought,

  2443. wow,

  2444. this sounds

  2445. a lot

  2446. like

  2447. Hezekiah.

  2448. I wonder

  2449. if Hezekiah

  2450. wrote this

  2451. psalm.

  2452. There's no

  2453. indication

  2454. about who

  2455. wrote

  2456. Psalm 102.

  2457. By the way,

  2458. I encourage

  2459. you to turn,

  2460. all of you,

  2461. to Psalm 102

  2462. at this point.

  2463. But

  2464. as I was

  2465. doing this

  2466. study,

  2467. I found it

  2468. very interesting

  2469. that this

  2470. psalm,

  2471. which I

  2472. think more

  2473. clearly than

  2474. any other

  2475. single passage

  2476. in the Bible

  2477. says God

  2478. does not

  2479. change,

  2480. includes a

  2481. prayer for

  2482. God to

  2483. change,

  2484. and He

  2485. did it.

  2486. Would

  2487. somebody

  2488. please read

  2489. Psalm 102,

  2490. starting with

  2491. verse 23.

  2492. Thanks.

  2493. He has

  2494. broken my

  2495. strength in

  2496. midcourse,

  2497. yet shortened

  2498. my days.

  2499. O my God,

  2500. I say,

  2501. take me not

  2502. away in the

  2503. midst of my

  2504. days,

  2505. you whose

  2506. years endure

  2507. throughout all

  2508. generations.

  2509. So that,

  2510. whether Hezekiah

  2511. wrote this

  2512. psalm or not,

  2513. that was

  2514. Hezekiah's

  2515. situation.

  2516. God was

  2517. cutting short

  2518. his life.

  2519. And then

  2520. he asked

  2521. God to

  2522. change,

  2523. you know,

  2524. what he

  2525. had declared

  2526. would happen.

  2527. And how

  2528. does he,

  2529. you know,

  2530. carry on in

  2531. his request

  2532. to God?

  2533. Please continue.

  2534. God,

  2535. please change

  2536. from what

  2537. you said you

  2538. are going

  2539. to do.

  2540. Because you

  2541. do not

  2542. change.

  2543. You are

  2544. the same.

  2545. And so

  2546. your people

  2547. can count

  2548. on you.

  2549. And so

  2550. I have a

  2551. summary statement

  2552. at the end,

  2553. which I have

  2554. since changed.

  2555. And I

  2556. would probably

  2557. rewrite it,

  2558. you know,

  2559. from scratch.

  2560. But my

  2561. temporary fix

  2562. is this.

  2563. Because

  2564. God does

  2565. not change,

  2566. we,

  2567. I can't read

  2568. it,

  2569. so I'll just

  2570. tell you,

  2571. to stick in

  2572. the word

  2573. apparent

  2574. between

  2575. his and

  2576. plans.

  2577. could

  2578. somebody

  2579. read it

  2580. with that

  2581. edit,

  2582. like it,

  2583. yeah.

  2584. Because God

  2585. does not

  2586. change,

  2587. we can

  2588. count on

  2589. him to

  2590. change his

  2591. appearance

  2592. plans for

  2593. us as we

  2594. change.

  2595. And

  2596. particularly

  2597. as we

  2598. draw near

  2599. to him,

  2600. we can

  2601. count on

  2602. him to

  2603. change the

  2604. current

  2605. situation

  2606. and the

  2607. apparent

  2608. plans for

  2609. good.

  2610. Now,

  2611. it may

  2612. not be

  2613. what we

  2614. asked for

  2615. or hoped

  2616. for,

  2617. like Paul's

  2618. thorn in

  2619. the flesh.

  2620. Prayed

  2621. three times

  2622. that God

  2623. would take

  2624. that away.

  2625. But God

  2626. had a

  2627. really good

  2628. plan.

  2629. And Paul

  2630. changed.

  2631. He changed

  2632. from one

  2633. who was

  2634. complaining

  2635. and unhappy,

  2636. maybe miserable

  2637. because of

  2638. his thorn in

  2639. the flesh,

  2640. to someone

  2641. who could

  2642. rejoice in

  2643. his weakness

  2644. because God's

  2645. strength was

  2646. revealed in

  2647. it.

  2648. So,

  2649. it kind

  2650. of gets

  2651. the paradox

  2652. of prayer,

  2653. right?

  2654. It does,

  2655. it does.

  2656. I will do

  2657. this,

  2658. yet he

  2659. commands us

  2660. to pray that

  2661. God will

  2662. accomplish his

  2663. purposes.

  2664. So,

  2665. in a way,

  2666. like we're

  2667. praying,

  2668. but God

  2669. is already

  2670. ordained that

  2671. he is going

  2672. to triumph

  2673. over our

  2674. enemy.

  2675. And God

  2676. does to do

  2677. us both.

  2678. And that's,

  2679. you need to

  2680. just keep

  2681. doing,

  2682. keep those

  2683. intentions.

  2684. We're going

  2685. to pray,

  2686. but also

  2687. trust that God's

  2688. plan is,

  2689. you know,

  2690. he's declared

  2691. the final victory

  2692. and we're going

  2693. to rejoice

  2694. with him

  2695. on that final

  2696. day.

  2697. But yeah,

  2698. we're called

  2699. to pray

  2700. for this

  2701. that's come

  2702. to pass.

  2703. Come Lord

  2704. Jesus,

  2705. the last

  2706. word of the

  2707. Bible.

  2708. we are

  2709. to pray

  2710. a couple.

  2711. Yes,

  2712. yes.

  2713. I don't

  2714. understand how

  2715. it works,

  2716. but I do

  2717. know this.

  2718. God is

  2719. faithful.

  2720. He loves

  2721. us.

  2722. He doesn't

  2723. change on

  2724. that.

  2725. And as we

  2726. draw near to

  2727. him,

  2728. he is going

  2729. to do

  2730. something

  2731. good in

  2732. our lives.

  2733. and many

  2734. times it

  2735. will look

  2736. like a big

  2737. change and

  2738. other times

  2739. it won't.

  2740. But if

  2741. we're there

  2742. in the arms

  2743. of Jesus,

  2744. that is a

  2745. good thing.

  2746. He is

  2747. faithful.

  2748. Yeah.

  2749. So I'm

  2750. going to

  2751. close with

  2752. prayer and

  2753. then you

  2754. will be

  2755. free to

  2756. depart or

  2757. stay.

  2758. Oh Lord,

  2759. I,

  2760. we don't

  2761. understand

  2762. you

  2763. in

  2764. your

  2765. entirety.

  2766. But we

  2767. thank you

  2768. for revealing

  2769. so much

  2770. about yourself

  2771. to us.

  2772. And we

  2773. ask that

  2774. we'll put

  2775. that which

  2776. we know

  2777. into

  2778. practice.

  2779. Today,

  2780. may we

  2781. abide

  2782. in you

  2783. that we

  2784. may bear

  2785. fruit for

  2786. you.

  2787. May we

  2788. please you

  2789. that we

  2790. may share

  2791. in your

  2792. joy.

  2793. May

  2794. you

  2795. use us

  2796. to be a

  2797. blessing

  2798. to others.

  2799. For the

  2800. glory of

  2801. Jesus'

  2802. name.

  2803. Amen.

  2804. Amen.

  2805. Amen.

  2806. Amen.

  2807. Amen.

  2808. Amen.

  2809. Amen.

  2810. Amen.

  2811. Amen.

  2812. Amen.

  2813. Amen.

  2814. Amen.

  2815. Amen.

  2816. Amen.

  2817. Amen.

  2818. Amen.

  2819. Amen.

  2820. Amen.

  2821. Amen.

  2822. Amen.

  2823. You're

  2824. welcome.

  2825. Is that

  2826. Chris?

  2827. Yes.

  2828. Hi,

  2829. Chris.

  2830. Amen.
