  1. will begin. God's faithfulness.

  2. That's what we'll be talking about today.

  3. So a tried and true aspect of God's character.

  4. Millions of believers have experienced personally, and it's

  5. an attribute that's very precious, highly esteemed, and

  6. our portion of times of trouble. God's faithfulness will be what we

  7. consider today. So we'll look at what the Bible means when it

  8. says God is faithful, three expressions of God's faithfulness, and then

  9. conclude with application. And we'll have

  10. some discussion together. So we began this series with the insight from A.W. Tozer

  11. who said the most important thing about you is what comes into your mind when you

  12. think about God. High views of God produce

  13. high worship. Low views of God produce shallow worship.

  14. Low views of God are figments of our imagination.

  15. their idolatry. What the Bible writers understood about God was a shield to them

  16. in times of trouble. It was a sword in the fight, in the battle of faith. It is a

  17. foundation which you build your life upon, the wellspring of joy, a bright fire that

  18. comforts us on a cold night. Sound doctrine, right thinking about God does that for the

  19. Christian. It produces devotion. It produces doxology.

  20. And I tend to think sound doctrine, what this whole series has been about, are like pieces

  21. of wood that you stack together to create a fire. But the spirit produces the flame.

  22. You put both these two things together, sound doctrine and the spirit, and it produces a

  23. roaring, blazing fire in the soul. Without the spirit, we're merely pieces of dry wood.

  24. We're dead. No power. There's no life. So with that, let's pray for the spirit's help before

  25. we dive in. Father in heaven, we pray for your help this morning. We pray that God's faithfulness,

  26. your faithfulness, Lord, would be the anchor that would ground us in the raging storms. We pray it

  27. would be a precious truth that we would come back to time and time again.

  28. Praise in Jesus' name. So before we dive in to God's faithfulness, what is the opposite of faithfulness?

  29. What's the opposite of faithfulness?

  30. Usually when you give a definition, you can't use the word in the definition, right? So you can't say

  31. unfaithfulness.

  32. Right, right. When you say unfaithfulness, what comes to mind?

  33. Unfaithfulness.

  34. I would say one word would be separation.

  35. Okay.

  36. Also one of those words where I feel like no one really, like, you never really think about

  37. the definition, right? You just know what it is. But unfaithfulness or, again, lack of faithfulness,

  38. I would say, you know, a loss of trust.

  39. Leads to a loss of trust, yeah. Someone you can't trust if they're unfaithful. Yeah.

  40. Disloyalty.

  41. Mm-hmm.

  42. Betrayal.

  43. Betrayal, disloyalty. Yes. Yes.

  44. Comes to mind wishy-washy. Someone who says they're going to do something, but they never actually

  45. do it.

  46. Lukewarmness.

  47. Lukewarmness, yes.

  48. Yeah, so what, and the opposite of that, what is faithfulness? And the faithfulness in the Bible

  49. is called steadfast love, right? The Hebrew word is hesed, which occurs 250 times in the Old Testament.

  50. And hesed refers to an unwavering commitment. Just this idea of loyalty, right? It's a,

  51. do you say, who said loyalty? You say loyalty? Yeah. A solemn oath that cannot be broken.

  52. Unwavering in a commitment to do something. Promising something and being absolutely reliable.

  53. So we can say a faithful friend is someone who sticks closer than a brother, right? Proverbs.

  54. Someone who is reliable. Someone who you can depend upon each day. And Louis Burkhoff,

  55. in his systematic theology, would describe God's faithfulness as follows. He is ever mindful

  56. of his covenant and fulfills all the promises which he has made to his people. He continues,

  57. this is the utmost practical significance of the people of God. Paraphrasing Burkhoff,

  58. he says, it is the ground of our confidence, the foundation of our hope, the cause of our rejoicing,

  59. our comfort when we are conscious of our own failures and shortcomings. Amen. God's faithfulness

  60. is lifted up in the scripture in many places. He can be trusted. He can be relied upon.

  61. He's unwavering in his commitment to his people. Five verses.

  62. Let us hold fast to our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

  63. Hebrews 10. Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Your faithfulness continues through all generations.

  64. Moses proclaims the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him

  65. to a thousand generations. God's signature line. The Lord, the Lord, merciful and gracious,

  66. abounding in steadfast love. Welcome, friends. We're talking about God's faithfulness.

  67. And perhaps the highest proclamation of God's faithfulness, great is your faithfulness.

  68. In Lamentations 3. The late David Powelson, a biblical counselor,

  69. frequently pointed out that the last phrase was the most used line in the Bible.

  70. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end.

  71. And Powelson would say, if God thinks it's worth repeating that his steadfast love lasts forever,

  72. then it's worth our repeating it too.

  73. God's faithfulness goes the second mile.

  74. But then it goes the third mile, and it goes the fourth mile.

  75. And then you realize it never ends.

  76. God's faithfulness continues and follows us, his people, throughout our lives.

  77. And each day is an opportunity to experience that mercy.

  78. So, are there examples in nature that remind you of God's faithfulness?

  79. Examples in nature that remind you of his faithfulness.

  80. Yes.

  81. The sunrise.

  82. We always have oxygen to breathe.

  83. I've been lost in the woods, and I was grateful for Polaris one time.

  84. What is Polaris?

  85. Polaris is the North Star.

  86. Oh.

  87. That's a great example.

  88. Yes.

  89. Yeah.

  90. Yes.

  91. He's a North Star.

  92. Amen.

  93. He is as reliable as the sun coming up each morning.

  94. I don't remember where I heard this, or even how accurate it is,

  95. but there's some crazy statistics about, like,

  96. just where the Earth is positioned in relation to the sun,

  97. if it was even, like, 1% further or closer,

  98. life wouldn't happen.

  99. And if the tilt of the axis were off just a little bit,

  100. and everything would cease to be,

  101. and just wind and waves and tides,

  102. and just all of it somehow working together,

  103. quite improbably, but not so hard to believe,

  104. we consider who put it together.

  105. Yeah.

  106. Yeah.

  107. Mm-hmm.

  108. I remember Jeff Stevens opened up,

  109. uh,

  110. uh,

  111. on Sunday,

  112. this is maybe a year or two ago,

  113. we were talking about,

  114. uh,

  115. I think one of his kids had, like,

  116. bruised, you know,

  117. an elbow or something like that,

  118. and, you know,

  119. he just kind of talked about, like,

  120. how we don't have to worry about,

  121. like,

  122. the skin naturally just taking care of that,

  123. right?

  124. The blood clots,

  125. you know,

  126. for most people,

  127. obviously, right?

  128. The blood clots,

  129. the skin reforms,

  130. um,

  131. and I still remember that.

  132. Mm-hmm.

  133. You know,

  134. we don't,

  135. we don't have to think about it.

  136. It just happens.

  137. Yeah.

  138. Yeah.

  139. Um,

  140. the point that I wanted to bring home in the class last week,

  141. which I think I forgot to mention,

  142. is that,

  143. um,

  144. uh,

  145. you know,

  146. just how secure we are when we move towards the Lord,

  147. enter into his presence,

  148. you know,

  149. he's,

  150. he's like,

  151. uh,

  152. a bird that shows great,

  153. faithful,

  154. regular love for,

  155. uh,

  156. his,

  157. his offspring,

  158. you know,

  159. whenever they move close,

  160. uh,

  161. wrapped into God's presence and protection.

  162. Hmm.

  163. Yes.

  164. It's a great,

  165. it's a great image.

  166. God caring for his little chicklets as a mother would.

  167. I think for me,

  168. I,

  169. I always picture like the,

  170. the,

  171. the breakers,

  172. the waves always coming in,

  173. never ending on the beach.

  174. When I'm on the beach,

  175. I see that.

  176. I just always reminds me of God's faithfulness.

  177. It just never ends.

  178. Always coming in.

  179. And God's faithfulness is that for us.

  180. Is he not?

  181. As sure as the season's changing,

  182. as sure as the spring coming in the winter,

  183. like God is always faithful.

  184. He's always reliable.

  185. He is always,

  186. can be relied upon in every season of life.

  187. And I looked up some hymns that talked about God's faithfulness.

  188. And here are just a few.

  189. There can be a lot more.

  190. Great is thy faithfulness.

  191. How firm a foundation.

  192. It is well with my soul.

  193. He will hold me fast.

  194. The solid rock,

  195. amazing grace.

  196. And I'm just kind of skimming the surface there.

  197. But all these hymns,

  198. I think we,

  199. what we find precious about them is it reminds us of God's unwavering goodness towards us.

  200. And what an encouragement these hymns have been to the people of God,

  201. reminding us that he is the solid rock,

  202. an anchor in the raging seas.

  203. We sang this at our wedding,

  204. the solid rock.

  205. His oath,

  206. his covenant,

  207. his blood support me in the whelming flood.

  208. When all around my soul gives way,

  209. he then is all my hope in this day.

  210. On Christ,

  211. the solid rock,

  212. I stand.

  213. And he is the solid rock in the flood,

  214. in the storm.

  215. And so for our time today,

  216. we intuitively understand what God's faithfulness is.

  217. We'll look at three expressions of God's faithfulness in the scripture.

  218. So three expressions,

  219. and then we'll conclude with some application in our lives.

  220. First,

  221. God is faithful to keep his covenant promises.

  222. And this is the context of God's faithfulness.

  223. It has been said the two certainties in life are death and taxes.

  224. The other certainty is God always,

  225. he always keeps his promises.

  226. And these promises often take the form of covenants.

  227. So a covenant is a solemn promise.

  228. This is when you pinky promise when you're a child.

  229. You know,

  230. a pinky promise,

  231. I'm going to do it.

  232. And when you're older,

  233. you enter into other kinds of covenants.

  234. You enter into the solemn covenant of marriage through marriage vows,

  235. for better or worse,

  236. for richer or poorer,

  237. for sickness and in health.

  238. A church covenant.

  239. You promise to love and give gifts of love and service.

  240. We break our vows,

  241. but God never breaks his.

  242. And God made a solemn covenant with Abraham in chapter 12.

  243. So if you turn there,

  244. Genesis 12,

    Genesis 12:1–3

  245. verses 1 to 3.

  246. Would somebody mind reading that for us?

  247. Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12:1–3

  248. verses 1 to 3.

  249. Thank you.

  250. Now the Lord said to Abraham,

  251. Go from your country and your kindred,

  252. and your father's house to the land that I will show you.

  253. And I will make of you a great nation.

  254. And I will bless you,

  255. and make the name great,

  256. so that you will be a blessing.

  257. I will bless those who bless you.

  258. And him who dishonors you,

  259. I will curse.

  260. And in you,

  261. all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

  262. Amen.

  263. Amen.

  264. So the context,

  265. God calls Abraham out of the land of Ur

  266. and promises him blessing.

  267. And three things in the Abrahamic covenant.

  268. First is land in verse 1.

  269. Numerous offspring in verse 2.

  270. And then finally,

  271. verse 3,

  272. this offspring would be the source of blessing to all nations

  273. through one of the seed that would come from Abraham.

  274. And later on in Genesis 15,

  275. God would tell Abraham that this,

  276. his offspring would be as numerous as the stars of heaven.

  277. And this is an eternal blessing.

  278. Forgiven,

  279. accepted,

  280. sanctified,

  281. glorified,

  282. joy in the presence of God.

  283. And in Genesis 12,

  284. he's restoring what was lost in the garden.

  285. God recreates the world.

  286. Remember that promised seed that Genesis 3.15,

  287. he will crush the head of the serpent.

  288. That offspring is going to come through Abraham's line

  289. and recreate what was lost.

  290. in the garden.

  291. And Abraham would be the progenitor of that offspring.

  292. And then in chapter 15,

  293. it says Abraham believed God's promise

  294. and the Lord counts him,

  295. reckons him as a righteous man.

  296. As Romans 4 would tell us,

  297. because of his faith in that promise,

  298. he is accounted as righteous.

  299. He lived his homeland,

  300. his family,

  301. everything he knew

  302. and followed God to an unknown land

  303. because he knew God was reliable.

  304. But yet,

  305. he believed God,

  306. but he still seeks assurance.

  307. Ten years

  308. passes

  309. since Genesis 12.

  310. He is 75 years old

  311. and he's still

  312. childless.

  313. He is doubting.

  314. So Abraham is doubting.

  315. He's wavering.

  316. God,

  317. you promised me ten years ago

  318. that I would have an offspring

  319. as numerous as the stars of heaven,

  320. yet I don't even have a child.

  321. He's getting older

  322. and he's in an age where

  323. it is almost impossible

  324. to have children.

  325. Where is this

  326. promised seed

  327. that you promised

  328. to bless the nations?

  329. And Abraham asked God

  330. in Genesis 15,

  331. Oh Lord God,

  332. how may I know

  333. that I will possess it?

  334. God,

  335. I need something more.

  336. God,

  337. I need

  338. something

  339. to assure me

  340. that this promise,

  341. you will keep it.

  342. And God,

  343. in his grace,

  344. answers

  345. that request.

  346. Hebrews 6,

    Hebrews 6:17

  347. verse 17,

  348. speaking about Abraham here,

  349. says,

  350. So when God desired

  351. to show more convincingly

  352. to the heirs of the promise

  353. the unchangeable character

  354. of his purpose,

  355. he guaranteed it

  356. with an oath.

  357. He guaranteed it

  358. with an oath.

  359. God solemnly swears

  360. an oath of allegiance

  361. to fulfill his promise

  362. to Abraham.

  363. I mean,

  364. he didn't have to do that,

  365. right?

  366. He could have just said,

  367. Abraham,

  368. stop asking so many questions.

  369. Do what I tell you to do

  370. and stop and just trust me.

  371. God,

  372. you're so wavering

  373. in your faith.

  374. What's wrong with you?

  375. But God doesn't do that,

  376. right?

  377. He cares for Abraham's assurance

  378. and he cares that you and I

  379. have unshakable hope as well.

  380. And if you're in Christ,

  381. God is committed

  382. to working for you.

  383. He has made promises

  384. in the scripture.

  385. And if you turn there

  386. to Genesis 15,

  387. this oath that God takes

  388. is in the form of a solemn ceremony

  389. in Genesis 15,

    Genesis 15:7–21

  390. verse 7 to 21.

  391. Morning.

  392. A curious ceremony takes place

  393. to seal that solemn promise,

  394. a solemn oath that God takes.

  395. Genesis 15.

  396. And covenants

  397. in the ancient Near East

  398. were sometimes ratified

  399. through a ceremony

  400. in which animals were cut up

  401. and the pieces

  402. were arranged on the ground.

  403. And that's what's happening

  404. in Genesis 15,

    Genesis 15:9–10

  405. verses 9 to 10.

  406. Abraham is called

  407. to take a heifer,

  408. a goat,

  409. a ram,

  410. and some birds

  411. and cut them up.

  412. The word for covenant

  413. means to cut the covenants here.

  414. So he's cutting them up

  415. in that ancient

  416. Near Eastern ceremony.

  417. And the two parties

  418. would walk

  419. between the pieces

  420. stigma,

  421. a similar fate

  422. would befall either of them

  423. if either of them

  424. broke their part

  425. of the agreement.

  426. They would be torn apart

  427. like the animals

  428. on the ground.

  429. But something very interesting

  430. happens in verse 12.

  431. A deep sleep

  432. fell on Abraham.

  433. So God puts Abraham

  434. to sleep

  435. and it was only God

  436. who walks

  437. through the animal pieces

  438. in a figure

  439. of a smoking fire pot

  440. and a flaming torch.

  441. So God takes

  442. Abraham's place

  443. in that ceremony.

  444. That's a dramatic moment

  445. in the scripture.

  446. What is this ceremony

  447. intending to communicate?

  448. Why would God put Abraham

  449. to sleep

  450. and then walk

  451. through

  452. the pieces?

  453. The pieces.

  454. Good morning.

  455. Striking.

  456. God not only takes

  457. He not only walks

  458. for Himself

  459. He also walks

  460. through for Abraham.

  461. Is it a foreshadowing

  462. of what Jesus

  463. would do this?

  464. Yes.

  465. Yes.

  466. In what way?

  467. If you elaborate

  468. a little more on that.

  469. I'm not sure

  470. but some of it

  471. is that

  472. in a covenant

  473. to promise

  474. to do something

  475. it is not

  476. assured that humans

  477. that promise

  478. to do something

  479. are going to be pure

  480. and the process

  481. of that commitment

  482. that God walks

  483. in our place

  484. and carries us

  485. in some

  486. substitutional way

  487. then there's

  488. an assurance

  489. that

  490. that covenant

  491. will be maintained.

  492. Yeah.

  493. I'll just

  494. bumble a little one.

  495. Hey, I'm following.

  496. Amen, brother.

  497. Chris, help.

  498. Olivia.

  499. So Tyler,

  500. I thought that this was

  501. when God makes

  502. the covenant

  503. with Abraham

  504. for land.

  505. No?

  506. Yeah, it's

  507. Yeah, I know.

  508. The 15 is a ceremony

  509. for the covenant

  510. he originally makes

  511. in 12.

  512. Chapter 12.

  513. And in chapter 12

  514. he promises land

  515. offspring

  516. and that

  517. numerous offspring

  518. and that this offspring

  519. would bless

  520. the entire world.

  521. So this offspring

  522. is sealing the promise

  523. that God makes earlier

  524. which includes land.

  525. And in this,

  526. in 15

  527. he

  528. says

  529. you're going to have

  530. an offspring

  531. from your own body

  532. you know,

  533. not the servant

  534. in your house

  535. but

  536. and

  537. could somebody read

  538. is like

  539. verse 8 or so

  540. to follow up

  541. on the living

  542. question

  543. where

  544. after

  545. Abraham

  546. sees the stars

  547. you know,

  548. God says

  549. you're offering them

  550. to be as numerous

  551. as the stars

  552. and Abraham

  553. believes God

  554. and it's counted

  555. to him as righteousness.

  556. But then I think

  557. he asks another question

  558. but I can't remember

  559. what it is.

  560. How can I know

  561. I will gain possession

  562. of it?

  563. What was that?

  564. How can I know

  565. I will gain possession

  566. of it?

  567. So it is about

  568. the land.

  569. Yeah.

  570. Is that right?

  571. It's about

  572. the

  573. promise.

  574. Like how can I know

  575. it's the land

  576. but it's also

  577. the offspring

  578. because he doesn't

  579. have the offspring

  580. he doesn't have

  581. Isaac yet

  582. and he's seeking

  583. assurance

  584. and God is

  585. he solemnly

  586. seals that

  587. promise

  588. through this covenant

  589. and God is saying

  590. I will keep my end

  591. of the deal

  592. and Abraham

  593. if you fail

  594. on your side

  595. I will take on

  596. myself

  597. the curse

  598. of breaking

  599. the covenant.

  600. Right?

  601. So it's a

  602. unilateral covenant

  603. that God

  604. I am going to do it

  605. on both of our sides

  606. and that's a

  607. driving engine

  608. that keeps the narrative

  609. moving forward

  610. in the Bible.

  611. Will God keep

  612. that promise?

  613. I mean consider

  614. God will keep

  615. his side

  616. and we know

  617. that

  618. but how can

  619. he really

  620. bless them

  621. when his people

  622. rebel against

  623. him?

  624. Right?

  625. God must judge

  626. the wicked

  627. because he is

  628. righteous

  629. but he made

  630. a promise

  631. surely if he is

  632. faithful he must

  633. keep it

  634. but how?

  635. In Proverbs

  636. it says

  637. those who

  638. justify the wicked

  639. are an abomination

  640. to God

  641. so God

  642. promises to

  643. bless them

  644. eternally bless

  645. them

  646. but yet

  647. they are

  648. rebellious

  649. and God

  650. doesn't just

  651. seal our assurance

  652. with oath

  653. and covenants

  654. but with blood

  655. and the blood

  656. as we said

  657. is foreshadowing

  658. the blood

  659. of his own son

  660. taking the curse

  661. upon himself

  662. to show his

  663. faithfulness

  664. he would

  665. engrave the names

  666. in the palms

  667. of his hands

  668. I love this

  669. hymn from

  670. Joseph Hart

  671. view him

  672. prostrate

  673. in the garden

  674. on the ground

  675. your maker lies

  676. on the bloody

  677. tree

  678. behold him

  679. sinner

  680. will not

  681. this

  682. suffice

  683. lo the incarnate

  684. God ascended

  685. plead the merits

  686. of his blood

  687. venture on him

  688. venture holy

  689. let no other

  690. trust

  691. intrude

  692. that's a hymn

  693. come

  694. you sinners

  695. poor and needy

  696. but we see

  697. that God

  698. is willing

  699. to keep

  700. that promise

  701. where the maker

  702. would take

  703. on flesh

  704. and prostrate

  705. himself on the

  706. ground

  707. in order to

  708. keep his

  709. promises

  710. and the

  711. covenants

  712. we did a study

  713. last year

  714. about all the

  715. different covenants

  716. and how they

  717. relate to each

  718. other

  719. but the covenants

  720. are like the

  721. steel structure

  722. of the skyscraper

  723. that keep it

  724. from collapsing

  725. into judgments

  726. in the same way

  727. God's faithfulness

  728. to those promises

  729. his covenants

  730. keep the plan

  731. of redemption

  732. from collapsing

  733. into judgments

  734. and there's a real

  735. drama

  736. in the doctrine

  737. of God's faithfulness

  738. consider the

  739. exodus

  740. exodus makes

  741. this point

  742. that the people

  743. left Egypt

  744. but they took

  745. Egypt with them

  746. in their hearts

  747. the covenant

  748. that God made

  749. with Moses

  750. was broken

  751. before the ink

  752. was even dry

  753. is God really

  754. going to be

  755. faithful to

  756. an adulterous

  757. idolatrous

  758. spouse

  759. and you can

  760. read about that

  761. in the book

  762. of Hosea

  763. but God

  764. there's

  765. there's

  766. there's a

  767. tension there

  768. right

  769. there's a

  770. tension

  771. how is God

  772. going to

  773. keep that

  774. promise

  775. and I think

  776. there's two

  777. ways this is

  778. often misunderstood

  779. of God's

  780. faithfulness

  781. I think in our

  782. selfie culture

  783. we might be

  784. tempted to think

  785. yeah God is

  786. faithful because

  787. of me

  788. I'm worth it

  789. right

  790. you know

  791. he makes

  792. promises

  793. and he must

  794. keep them

  795. because he

  796. made it

  797. with me

  798. and that's

  799. the flavor

  800. if you turn

  801. on the TV

  802. or some radio

  803. station

  804. everything God

  805. does is because

  806. I'm so worth it

  807. right

  808. but listen to how

  809. Jeremiah pleads

  810. for mercy

  811. for God to keep

  812. his covenant

  813. promises

  814. Jeremiah 14

    Jeremiah 14:21

  815. verse 21

  816. do not

  817. spurn us

  818. for your

  819. namesake

  820. do not

  821. dishonor

  822. your

  823. glorious

  824. throne

  825. remember

  826. and do

  827. not

  828. break

  829. your

  830. covenant

  831. with us

  832. so that

  833. Jeremiah

  834. doesn't say

  835. keep the

  836. covenant

  837. because we're

  838. so awesome

  839. he's pleading

  840. for mercy

  841. using God's

  842. own name

  843. do not

  844. dishonor

  845. your own

  846. throne

  847. God

  848. by breaking

  849. your promise

  850. what a great

  851. way to pray

  852. pleading the

  853. promises

  854. back

  855. to God

  856. and if you

  857. struggle in your

  858. prayer life

  859. consider following

  860. Jeremiah's

  861. example

  862. and take

  863. some promises

  864. from the

  865. Bible

  866. and pleading

  867. them back

  868. to God

  869. saying God

  870. you have

  871. promised

  872. and pray

  873. that

  874. and God

  875. keeps his

  876. promises

  877. but there's a

  878. second way

  879. this gets

  880. twisted

  881. and James

  882. Montgomery

  883. Boyce

  884. a pastor

  885. for many

  886. years at

  887. 10th

  888. Presbyterian

  889. in Philadelphia

  890. tells a story

  891. of a young

  892. man

  893. who had

  894. recently

  895. committed

  896. to Christ

  897. he had

  898. been involved

  899. in sexual

  900. sin

  901. and he

  902. desperately

  903. wanted to

  904. straighten his

  905. life out

  906. to experience

  907. the true

  908. blessings

  909. of Christianity

  910. unable to

  911. shake it

  912. he made a

  913. white knuckle

  914. commitment

  915. that he

  916. would stop

  917. having sex

  918. with his

  919. girlfriends

  920. and maybe

  921. that would

  922. bring about

  923. the true

  924. blessings

  925. that he

  926. expected

  927. from being

  928. a Christian

  929. but it

  930. didn't work

  931. he actually

  932. stopped

  933. fornicating

  934. having sex

  935. but his

  936. life was

  937. still dry

  938. it didn't

  939. work

  940. he actually

  941. he thought

  942. he had done

  943. a great deal

  944. in his

  945. minds

  946. he sacrificed

  947. for God

  948. but God

  949. had not

  950. responded

  951. appropriately

  952. to him

  953. God

  954. you have

  955. not kept

  956. your part

  957. of the bargain

  958. in his heart

  959. he began

  960. to accuse

  961. God

  962. God

  963. I have

  964. been faithful

  965. yet you

  966. have been

  967. unfaithful

  968. to me

  969. God

  970. you are

  971. unjust

  972. the fault

  973. is at

  974. your feet

  975. in his heart

  976. he thought

  977. maybe God

  978. is like

  979. the wizard

  980. of us

  981. you pull

  982. the curtain

  983. back

  984. and you

  985. find that

  986. God

  987. really isn't

  988. that great

  989. after all

  990. God

  991. you say

  992. you're

  993. faithful

  994. but you

  995. really only

  996. half heartily

  997. love your

  998. people

  999. if you read

  1000. the minor

  1001. prophets

  1002. this is

  1003. exactly

  1004. the kind

  1005. of heart

  1006. situation

  1007. you'll find

  1008. the people

  1009. of Israel

  1010. had

  1011. especially

  1012. Malachi

  1013. does that

  1014. describe

  1015. you

  1016. so let me

  1017. ask this

  1018. question

  1019. what about

  1020. God's

  1021. faithfulness

  1022. does this

  1023. person

  1024. misunderstand

  1025. how would

  1026. you counsel

  1027. this person

  1028. who can

  1029. I sacrifice

  1030. for God

  1031. but God's

  1032. not doing

  1033. anything

  1034. for me

  1035. what does

  1036. this person

  1037. need to

  1038. hear

  1039. well first

  1040. it's not

  1041. it's not

  1042. a sacrifice

  1043. to stop

  1044. saying

  1045. you can't

  1046. claim that

  1047. that is

  1048. something

  1049. that you

  1050. can just

  1051. give to

  1052. God

  1053. because he

  1054. expects it

  1055. and requires

  1056. it already

  1057. and that's

  1058. there's a lot

  1059. more to it

  1060. than that

  1061. but that's

  1062. the starting

  1063. point

  1064. you can't

  1065. expect God

  1066. to be

  1067. grateful

  1068. for

  1069. you

  1070. you're not

  1071. doing any

  1072. doing him

  1073. any favors

  1074. simply by

  1075. doing

  1076. what he

  1077. commands

  1078. yeah

  1079. I'll probably

  1080. think that

  1081. what

  1082. the person

  1083. wanted

  1084. from God

  1085. is not

  1086. necessarily

  1087. what God

  1088. wants

  1089. for him

  1090. and then

  1091. also

  1092. the timing

  1093. of it

  1094. God has

  1095. his own

  1096. timing

  1097. and it's

  1098. not

  1099. immediate

  1100. necessarily

  1101. Abraham

  1102. waited

  1103. decades

  1104. yes

  1105. mm-hmm

  1106. like a

  1107. transactional

  1108. like I'm

  1109. doing something

  1110. so I'm

  1111. getting

  1112. something

  1113. in return

  1114. yeah

  1115. yeah

  1116. you see

  1117. that

  1118. and look

  1119. in Malachi

  1120. when the

  1121. people

  1122. tell God

  1123. we've done

  1124. our sacrifices

  1125. God

  1126. we've

  1127. we've

  1128. tithed

  1129. yet

  1130. you

  1131. are unjust

  1132. in how

  1133. you treated

  1134. us

  1135. and

  1136. those

  1137. people

  1138. you know

  1139. one of the

  1140. problems

  1141. is they're

  1142. self-righteous

  1143. right

  1144. and they

  1145. needed to

  1146. repent

  1147. immediately

  1148. and I

  1149. and I

  1150. think

  1151. yeah

  1152. that

  1153. that

  1154. there's

  1155. there's

  1156. idolatry

  1157. there

  1158. their motivations

  1159. for

  1160. why they're

  1161. sacrificing

  1162. in the first

  1163. place

  1164. they're not

  1165. really

  1166. living

  1167. as God

  1168. as their

  1169. ultimate

  1170. treasure

  1171. and that

  1172. leads us

  1173. to our

  1174. second

  1175. point

  1176. so the

  1177. first

  1178. point

  1179. was God

  1180. is faithful

  1181. to keep

  1182. his promises

  1183. but the

  1184. second

  1185. point

  1186. God

  1187. is faithful

  1188. to afflict

  1189. his people

  1190. now this

  1191. is counterintuitive

  1192. TV preachers

  1193. will tell you

  1194. otherwise

  1195. but this

  1196. is not

  1197. our best

  1198. life

  1199. now

  1200. first

  1201. comes

  1202. the cross

  1203. and then

  1204. the crown

  1205. we are not

  1206. exempt from

  1207. trials and

  1208. troubles

  1209. he is the

  1210. God of

  1211. the valleys

  1212. as well

  1213. as the hills

  1214. and we

  1215. know that

  1216. right

  1217. Psalm 23

  1218. God is

  1219. faithful

  1220. through

  1221. afflictions

  1222. not apart

  1223. from

  1224. afflictions

  1225. you know

  1226. God is

  1227. even

  1228. faithful

  1229. in causing

  1230. the affliction

  1231. in the first

  1232. place

  1233. he knocks

  1234. us down

  1235. so you

  1236. think about

  1237. the context

  1238. of the book

  1239. of Lamentations

  1240. we quoted

  1241. chapter 3

  1242. verse 21

  1243. is that great

  1244. verse

  1245. great is thy

  1246. faithfulness

  1247. but in the

  1248. context

  1249. there are just

  1250. teardrops

  1251. all over

  1252. the pages

  1253. of that

  1254. book

  1255. it's a

  1256. sorrowful

  1257. book

  1258. full of

  1259. anguish

  1260. and the

  1261. author

  1262. recognizes

  1263. that God

  1264. was behind

  1265. it all

  1266. the writer

  1267. in chapter

  1268. 1 before

  1269. chapter 3

  1270. would say

  1271. in verse 4

  1272. the Lord

  1273. has afflicted

  1274. Jerusalem

  1275. for the

  1276. multitude

  1277. of her

  1278. transgressions

  1279. verse 11

  1280. if there is

  1281. any sorrow

  1282. like my sorrow

  1283. which was

  1284. brought upon

  1285. me

  1286. which the

  1287. Lord

  1288. inflicted

  1289. on the

  1290. day

  1291. of his

  1292. fierce

  1293. anger

  1294. verse 17

  1295. he has

  1296. carried out

  1297. his word

  1298. which he

  1299. commanded

  1300. long ago

  1301. he has

  1302. thrown down

  1303. without pity

  1304. the Lord

  1305. has commanded

  1306. against Jacob

  1307. that his

  1308. neighbors

  1309. should be

  1310. his foes

  1311. but in

  1312. verse 18

  1313. in chapter 1

  1314. is very

  1315. important

  1316. the writer

  1317. says

  1318. the Lord

  1319. is in the

  1320. right

  1321. for I

  1322. have rebelled

  1323. against

  1324. his word

  1325. so he

  1326. acknowledges

  1327. that whatever

  1328. we're getting

  1329. we deserve

  1330. God is not

  1331. unjust

  1332. in 1st

  1333. Samuel

  1334. Eli

  1335. the priest

  1336. was a

  1337. wicked

  1338. man

  1339. because

  1340. it says

  1341. he knew

  1342. his sons

  1343. were evil

  1344. and did

  1345. nothing

  1346. to stop

  1347. them

  1348. he never

  1349. disciplined

  1350. them

  1351. he never

  1352. afflicted

  1353. them

  1354. in

  1355. faithfulness

  1356. but God

  1357. is not

  1358. like that

  1359. he chastises

  1360. and afflicts

  1361. those whom

  1362. he loves

  1363. Psalm 119

    Psalms 119:75

  1364. verse 75

  1365. I know

  1366. O Lord

  1367. that your

  1368. rules are

  1369. righteous

  1370. and that

  1371. in

  1372. faithfulness

  1373. you have

  1374. afflicted

  1375. me

  1376. in

  1377. faithfulness

  1378. you have

  1379. afflicted

  1380. me

  1381. so the

  1382. psalmist

  1383. knew the

  1384. afflictions

  1385. were not

  1386. they're not

  1387. happened by

  1388. chance

  1389. but because

  1390. in God's

  1391. wisdom

  1392. he wanted

  1393. them to

  1394. be so

  1395. the

  1396. psalmist

  1397. knew there

  1398. is a

  1399. purpose

  1400. behind it

  1401. all

  1402. he saw

  1403. divine

  1404. providence

  1405. in his

  1406. afflictions

  1407. well to

  1408. what end

  1409. Psalm 119

  1410. would say

  1411. it is good

  1412. for me

  1413. that I

  1414. was afflicted

  1415. why

  1416. that I

  1417. might

  1418. learn

  1419. your

  1420. statutes

  1421. before

  1422. I was

  1423. afflicted

  1424. I went

  1425. astray

  1426. but now

  1427. I have

  1428. kept

  1429. your

  1430. word

  1431. Thomas

  1432. Watson

  1433. in his

  1434. body

  1435. of

  1436. divinity

  1437. says

  1438. the

  1439. trials

  1440. and

  1441. sufferings

  1442. of the

  1443. godly

  1444. are to

  1445. refine

  1446. and purify

  1447. them

  1448. God's

  1449. furnace

  1450. is in

  1451. Zion

  1452. is it

  1453. any

  1454. injustice

  1455. in God

  1456. to put

  1457. his

  1458. gold

  1459. into

  1460. the

  1461. furnace

  1462. to

  1463. purify

  1464. it

  1465. is

  1466. any

  1467. injustice

  1468. in

  1469. God

  1470. by

  1471. afflicting

  1472. his

  1473. people

  1474. to

  1475. make

  1476. them

  1477. partakers

  1478. of

  1479. his

  1480. holiness

  1481. what

  1482. more

  1483. proclaims

  1484. God's

  1485. faithfulness

  1486. than to

  1487. take such

  1488. a course

  1489. with

  1490. them

  1491. as

  1492. God

  1493. imposes

  1494. causes

  1495. for his

  1496. people

  1497. are for

  1498. their

  1499. good

  1500. now

  1501. granted

  1502. our

  1503. definition

  1504. of

  1505. good

  1506. and

  1507. God's

  1508. definition

  1509. of

  1510. good

  1511. might

  1512. not

  1513. be

  1514. the

  1515. same

  1516. but

  1517. in

  1518. God's

  1519. economy

  1520. the

  1521. weaker

  1522. we

  1523. are

  1524. the

  1525. more

  1526. we

  1527. rely

  1528. on

  1529. him

  1530. there's

  1531. truth

  1532. in

  1533. this

  1534. statement

  1535. God

  1536. is

  1537. all

  1538. you

  1539. need

  1540. when

  1541. God

  1542. is

  1543. all

  1544. you

  1545. have

  1546. and

  1547. sometimes

  1548. God

  1549. will

  1550. knock

  1551. us

  1552. down

  1553. when

  1554. all

  1555. we

  1556. have

  1557. is

  1558. God

  1559. for

  1560. us

  1561. to

  1562. realize

  1563. God

  1564. Job

    Job 5:17

  1565. 5

  1566. verse

  1567. 17

  1568. blessed

  1569. is

  1570. the

  1571. one

  1572. whom

  1573. God

  1574. reproves

  1575. therefore

  1576. do

  1577. not

  1578. despise

  1579. the

  1580. discipline

  1581. of

  1582. the

  1583. almighty

  1584. and

  1585. I

  1586. love

  1587. to

  1588. hear

  1589. a

  1590. time

  1591. in

  1592. your

  1593. life

  1594. when

  1595. in

  1596. your

  1597. weakness

  1598. God

  1599. demonstrated

  1600. his

  1601. faithfulness

  1602. to

  1603. you

  1604. weakness

  1605. sets

  1606. the

  1607. stage

  1608. for

  1609. God's

  1610. faithfulness

  1611. to

  1612. really

  1613. display

  1614. itself

  1615. there

  1616. was

  1617. a

  1618. time

  1619. in

  1620. my

  1621. life

  1622. when

  1623. backpacking

  1624. became

  1625. an

  1626. idol

  1627. for

  1628. me

  1629. and

  1630. I

  1631. was

  1632. in

  1633. the

  1634. middle

  1635. of

  1636. a

  1637. trip

  1638. with

  1639. the

  1640. family

  1641. out

  1642. of

  1643. Colorado

  1644. and

  1645. the

  1646. high

  1647. point

  1648. of

  1649. my

  1650. trip

  1651. was

  1652. on

  1653. Long's

  1654. Peak

  1655. the

  1656. highest

  1657. peak

  1658. in

  1659. Lucky

  1660. Mount

  1661. National

  1662. Park

  1663. and

  1664. things

  1665. were

  1666. not

  1667. working

  1668. out

  1669. for

  1670. that

  1671. to

  1672. happen

  1673. and

  1674. you

  1675. know

  1676. I

  1677. pushed

  1678. God

  1679. aside

  1680. and put

  1681. backpacking

  1682. on

  1683. a

  1684. terrible

  1685. weak

  1686. point

  1687. in my

  1688. life

  1689. and

  1690. God

  1691. got

  1692. my

  1693. attention

  1694. in

  1695. my

  1696. weakness

  1697. and

  1698. said

  1699. look

  1700. Matt

  1701. what

  1702. you

  1703. are

  1704. doing

  1705. here

  1706. and

  1707. I

  1708. didn't

  1709. climb

  1710. Long's

  1711. Peak

  1712. but

  1713. my

  1714. appreciation

  1715. of the

  1716. Lord

  1717. got

  1718. wonderfully

  1719. renewed

  1720. to

  1721. that

  1722. miserable

  1723. experience

  1724. that's a

  1725. great

  1726. example

  1727. thank you

  1728. brother

  1729. my

  1730. first year

  1731. of teaching

  1732. and subsequent

  1733. being

  1734. let go

  1735. from teaching

  1736. was a

  1737. very low

  1738. point

  1739. and then

  1740. that

  1741. really

  1742. drove me

  1743. into

  1744. seeking

  1745. God

  1746. specifically

  1747. in

  1748. my church

  1749. at the

  1750. time

  1751. and

  1752. it

  1753. brought

  1754. about

  1755. a lot

  1756. of

  1757. blessings

  1758. by being

  1759. brought low

  1760. and by

  1761. relying on

  1762. God's

  1763. people

  1764. because I

  1765. was not

  1766. strong or

  1767. wise enough

  1768. to understand

  1769. the context

  1770. of what I

  1771. was doing

  1772. here

  1773. for

  1774. long

  1775. I guess

  1776. I can

  1777. share a

  1778. little bit

  1779. I've always

  1780. wanted to

  1781. sing

  1782. but then

  1783. I

  1784. had a lot

  1785. of

  1786. health

  1787. problems

  1788. and a lot

  1789. of

  1790. family

  1791. issues

  1792. I just

  1793. couldn't

  1794. for a

  1795. really long

  1796. time

  1797. 10-15

  1798. years

  1799. but God

  1800. has really

  1801. shown himself

  1802. to be

  1803. faithful

  1804. to me

  1805. throughout

  1806. this healing

  1807. process

  1808. it's a

  1809. journey

  1810. so I'm

  1811. still on

  1812. the line

  1813. up

  1814. but I

  1815. think to me

  1816. that's one

  1817. of the

  1818. biggest signs

  1819. of the

  1820. faith

  1821. almost

  1822. to me

  1823. we thank

  1824. God for

  1825. it

  1826. thank you

  1827. anybody else

  1828. share

  1829. I

  1830. wanted to

  1831. do

  1832. like

  1833. a

  1834. really

  1835. like

  1836. awful

  1837. like

  1838. friendship

  1839. friend group

  1840. like

  1841. five

  1842. situations

  1843. like

  1844. two years

  1845. ago

  1846. and that

  1847. sort of

  1848. exploded

  1849. and

  1850. that sort

  1851. of led

  1852. me

  1853. like

  1854. shame

  1855. brokenness

  1856. so

  1857. I

  1858. feel

  1859. like

  1860. spiritual

  1861. group

  1862. in a lot

  1863. of ways

  1864. but that

  1865. was also

  1866. like

  1867. when I

  1868. started

  1869. songwriting

  1870. and

  1871. like

  1872. learning how

  1873. to play

  1874. guitar

  1875. and God

  1876. brought me

  1877. some tune

  1878. and just

  1879. playing the

  1880. town

  1881. with my

  1882. guitar

  1883. in the

  1884. morning

  1885. and

  1886. that's

  1887. the biggest

  1888. part of my

  1889. life

  1890. couple

  1891. years ago

  1892. during

  1893. COVID

  1894. 2020

  1895. that is

  1896. I

  1897. remember

  1898. you know

  1899. I mean

  1900. look for

  1901. it

  1902. changed

  1903. all of

  1904. our

  1905. worlds

  1906. obviously

  1907. and you

  1908. know

  1909. work

  1910. and personal

  1911. I

  1912. was

  1913. I was

  1914. struggling

  1915. with work

  1916. I just

  1917. I wasn't

  1918. happy

  1919. and

  1920. you might

  1921. remember

  1922. the story

  1923. but

  1924. a couple

  1925. people came

  1926. to me

  1927. internally

  1928. and said

  1929. hey

  1930. you should

  1931. talk to

  1932. this guy

  1933. long story

  1934. kind of

  1935. short

  1936. we were

  1937. doing

  1938. like

  1939. you know

  1940. kind of

  1941. an interview

  1942. if you

  1943. will

  1944. virtually

  1945. obviously

  1946. and

  1947. I missed

  1948. his call

  1949. he missed

  1950. my call

  1951. we were playing

  1952. back and forth

  1953. and finally

  1954. I finally got him

  1955. on video

  1956. and he closes

  1957. his book

  1958. and he goes

  1959. oh sorry

  1960. it's like

  1961. 6 o'clock

  1962. at the end

  1963. or whatever

  1964. he goes

  1965. sorry

  1966. you just caught

  1967. me preparing

  1968. for a lesson

  1969. tonight

  1970. I thought it

  1971. was work

  1972. related

  1973. and I was

  1974. like oh

  1975. do you want

  1976. me to

  1977. call you

  1978. back

  1979. he goes

  1980. oh

  1981. no

  1982. it's

  1983. all good

  1984. I just

  1985. run a

  1986. Ben's

  1987. Bible study

  1988. almost funny

  1989. looking back

  1990. to just be

  1991. like you

  1992. know

  1993. it's so

  1994. trivial also

  1995. right

  1996. like here

  1997. I am

  1998. struggling

  1999. and annoyed

  2000. and frustrated

  2001. with work

2002. and all of a sudden

  2003. God's just laughing

  2004. just saying

  2005. you don't think

  2006. I have like

  2007. your best

  2008. you know

  2009. plan already

  2010. laid out

  2011. right

  2012. I'm going to

  2013. guide you

  2014. to a Christian

  2015. man who's

  2016. going to lead

  2017. you

  2018. and I'm on

  2019. his team

  2020. ever since

  2021. and it's

  2022. just like

  2023. so funny

  2024. just

  2025. grateful

  2026. every day

  2027. yeah

  2028. I

  2029. when I was

  2030. younger

  2031. I was

  2032. changing

  2033. careers

  2034. and I

  2035. needed to

  2036. take

  2037. courses

  2038. and

  2039. I was

  2040. living

  2041. I moved

  2042. to New York

  2043. City

  2044. and after

  2045. a year

  2046. I was

  2047. broke

  2048. I needed

  2049. to work

  2050. and

  2051. a buddy

  2052. called me

  2053. I used

  2054. to be a

  2055. volunteer

  2056. leader

  2057. in Young

  2058. Life

  2059. he called

  2060. me up

  2061. and he

  2062. says

  2063. he's

  2064. got a

  2065. problem

  2066. he's

  2067. someone

  2068. to come

  2069. up

  2070. and be

  2071. a

  2072. good

  2073. boss

  2074. for a month

  2075. up at

  2076. Saranac

  2077. and

  2078. I couldn't

  2079. do it

  2080. I was

  2081. broke

  2082. I needed

  2083. to find

  2084. some work

  2085. and so I

  2086. asked the

  2087. guys that I

  2088. lived with

  2089. what do you

  2090. think

  2091. just to get

  2092. some counsel

  2093. and

  2094. there were

  2095. four guys

  2096. three of them

  2097. didn't know

  2098. the Lord

  2099. and they said

  2100. no you can't

  2101. do it

  2102. and this one

  2103. Catholic guy

  2104. said well

  2105. you should

  2106. go

  2107. and so

  2108. how often

  2109. do I actually

  2110. go out

  2111. on a way

  2112. for the

  2113. war

  2114. not all

  2115. the time

  2116. but this

  2117. time I

  2118. did

  2119. so I

  2120. went up

  2121. there for a

  2122. month

  2123. as a

  2124. volunteer

  2125. thing

  2126. and

  2127. during that

  2128. time I met

  2129. my wife

  2130. and we

  2131. were married

  2132. for a

  2133. year

  2134. and four

  2135. kids

  2136. 40 years

  2137. and we're

  2138. blessed with

  2139. 40 years

  2140. together

  2141. because

  2142. for once

  2143. behind me

  2144. you trusted

  2145. the Lord

  2146. so I

  2147. think about

  2148. all the

  2149. times

  2150. where I

  2151. didn't

  2152. all the

  2153. gifts

  2154. that were

  2155. left behind

  2156. in some sense

  2157. so it's

  2158. an encouragement

  2159. to trust

  2160. the Father

  2161. yeah

  2162. God is

  2163. faithful

  2164. yes

  2165. where would

  2166. we be

  2167. right

  2168. if

  2169. he hadn't

  2170. knocked us

  2171. down

  2172. in order

  2173. to

  2174. show

  2175. more of

  2176. himself

  2177. to us

  2178. and

  2179. we all

  2180. recognize

  2181. that

  2182. we can

  2183. see this

  2184. backwards

  2185. looking backwards

  2186. in our

  2187. lives

  2188. but

  2189. it is

  2190. hard

  2191. to see

  2192. that

  2193. when it's

  2194. going on

  2195. at the

  2196. moment

  2197. and that's

  2198. just what

  2199. principle

  2200. that you

  2201. have to

  2202. look

  2203. backwards

  2204. to see

  2205. God's

  2206. faithfulness

  2207. his

  2208. providence

  2209. in your

  2210. life

  2211. and

  2212. he is

  2213. faithful

  2214. to

  2215. his

  2216. covenant

  2217. promises

  2218. he is

  2219. faithful

  2220. in afflicting

  2221. us

  2222. and the

  2223. last

  2224. expression

  2225. of

  2226. God's

  2227. faithfulness

  2228. is

  2229. he is

  2230. faithful

  2231. to

  2232. preserve

  2233. and

  2234. save

  2235. his

  2236. people

  2237. in our

  2238. distress

  2239. we can

  2240. be confident

  2241. that God

  2242. will preserve

  2243. us

  2244. preserving

  2245. grace

  2246. in our

  2247. affliction

  2248. he doesn't

  2249. merely

  2250. save us

  2251. afflict us

  2252. and then

  2253. just stand

  2254. back

  2255. waiting to

  2256. see if

  2257. we're going

  2258. to collapse

  2259. under the

  2260. weight

  2261. of it

  2262. all

  2263. right

  2264. let's

  2265. see if

  2266. this

  2267. person

  2268. has enough

  2269. strength

  2270. to keep

  2271. trusting

  2272. Christ

  2273. in the

  2274. affliction

  2275. Jude 24

  2276. right

  2277. now to

  2278. him

  2279. who is

  2280. able to

  2281. keep

  2282. you

  2283. from

  2284. stumbling

  2285. and to

  2286. present

  2287. you

  2288. blameless

  2289. before the

  2290. presence

  2291. of his

  2292. glory

  2293. with great

  2294. joy

  2295. to the

  2296. only

  2297. God

  2298. our

  2299. Savior

  2300. through

  2301. Jesus

  2302. Christ

  2303. our

  2304. Lord

  2305. be glory

  2306. majesty

  2307. dominion

  2308. and

  2309. authority

  2310. before

  2311. all time

  2312. and now

  2313. and forever

  2314. more

  2315. amen

  2316. Philippians 1

    Philippians 1:6

  2317. verse 6

  2318. and I'm

  2319. sure of

  2320. this

  2321. that he

  2322. who began

  2323. a good

  2324. work

  2325. in you

  2326. will bring

  2327. it to

  2328. completion

  2329. at the

  2330. day

  2331. of Christ

  2332. God can

  2333. keep you

  2334. from stumbling

  2335. he is

  2336. strong enough

  2337. to preserve

  2338. you

  2339. in your

  2340. affliction

  2341. God is

  2342. strong enough

  2343. to finish

  2344. the good

  2345. work he

  2346. has started

  2347. in you

  2348. he gives

  2349. preserving

  2350. grace

  2351. he preserves

  2352. his own

  2353. my second

  2354. favorite book

  2355. of the

  2356. bible

  2357. is

  2358. pilgrim's

  2359. progress

  2360. so

  2361. I

  2362. probably

  2363. quote

  2364. pilgrim's

  2365. progress

  2366. half the

  2367. time

  2368. if I'm

  2369. teaching

  2370. John

  2371. Bunyan

  2372. illustrates

  2373. this so

  2374. well

  2375. in his

  2376. classic

  2377. the truth

  2378. Corinthians

  2379. 12

  2380. verse 9

  2381. though

  2382. Paul

  2383. had the

  2384. thorn

  2385. in the

  2386. side

  2387. he prayed

  2388. three

  2389. times

  2390. for the

  2391. Lord

  2392. to remove

  2393. it

  2394. and God

  2395. told

  2396. Paul

  2397. my grace

  2398. is sufficient

  2399. for you

  2400. my power

  2401. is made

  2402. perfect

  2403. in weakness

  2404. and Paul

  2405. says

  2406. therefore

  2407. I will

  2408. boast

  2409. all the

  2410. more

  2411. gladly

  2412. of my

  2413. weakness

  2414. so the

  2415. power

  2416. of Christ

  2417. may rest

  2418. upon me

  2419. if you haven't

  2420. read it

  2421. the central

  2422. character

  2423. in the

  2424. book

  2425. is a

  2426. person

  2427. named

  2428. Christian

  2429. and he

  2430. meets a

  2431. helper

  2432. named

  2433. Interpreter

  2434. an

  2435. interpreter's

  2436. job

  2437. is to

  2438. teach

  2439. Christians

  2440. truth

  2441. that he

  2442. will need

  2443. for the

  2444. journey

  2445. of faith

  2446. an

  2447. interpreter

  2448. shows

  2449. Christian

  2450. a fire

  2451. that is

  2452. burning

  2453. against

  2454. a wall

  2455. and how

  2456. someone was

  2457. standing by

  2458. the fire

  2459. trying to

  2460. put it

  2461. out

  2462. by throwing

  2463. water

  2464. on it

  2465. but strangely

  2466. the fire

  2467. did not go

  2468. out

  2469. not only

  2470. did it not

  2471. go out

  2472. but it

  2473. burned

  2474. brighter

  2475. and hotter

  2476. and Christian

  2477. asked

  2478. interpreter

  2479. what does

  2480. this mean

  2481. interpreter

  2482. explain

  2483. the fire

  2484. is the

  2485. work of

  2486. grace

  2487. that God

  2488. produces

  2489. in our

  2490. hearts

  2491. the grace

  2492. of trust

  2493. in Christ

  2494. and our

  2495. love

  2496. for him

  2497. but the

  2498. devil

  2499. is constantly

  2500. trying to

  2501. put out

  2502. this fire

  2503. by pouring

  2504. on it

  2505. the water

  2506. of temptations

  2507. worries

  2508. and trials

  2509. then

  2510. interpreter

  2511. wanted

  2512. to show

  2513. Christian

  2514. how the

  2515. fire

  2516. not only

  2517. kept

  2518. burning

  2519. but kept

  2520. burning

  2521. higher

  2522. hotter

  2523. and higher

  2524. so he

  2525. took

  2526. Christian

  2527. around

  2528. the back

  2529. of a

  2530. wall

  2531. and behind

  2532. the wall

  2533. he saw

  2534. a man

  2535. who had

  2536. a jar

  2537. of oil

  2538. in his

  2539. hand

  2540. which he

  2541. poured

  2542. continually

  2543. into the

  2544. fire

  2545. and Christian

  2546. asked

  2547. what does

  2548. this mean

  2549. interpreter

  2550. answered

  2551. this is

  2552. Christ

  2553. who continually

  2554. with the

  2555. oil

  2556. of his

  2557. grace

  2558. maintains

  2559. the work

  2560. already

  2561. begun

  2562. in the

  2563. heart

  2564. despite

  2565. the devil's

  2566. best efforts

  2567. this person

  2568. is gracious

  2569. to preserve

  2570. the soul

  2571. of his

  2572. people

  2573. this man

  2574. is behind

  2575. the wall

  2576. to maintain

  2577. the fire

  2578. of grace

  2579. in the soul

  2580. to teach

  2581. you

  2582. that is

  2583. hard

  2584. for the

  2585. tempted

  2586. to show

  2587. how this

  2588. work of

  2589. grace

  2590. is maintained

  2591. so Bunyan

  2592. puts the man

  2593. behind the

  2594. wall

  2595. so he can't

  2596. actually see

  2597. what's going

  2598. on

  2599. why is

  2600. the fire

  2601. burning

  2602. hotter

  2603. and it's

  2604. hard to see

  2605. that in our

  2606. trials and

  2607. temptations

  2608. is it not

  2609. the fact

  2610. the spirit

  2611. is just

  2612. giving

  2613. us power

  2614. in our

  2615. weakness

  2616. and

  2617. Paul

  2618. understood

  2619. that

  2620. and it's

  2621. hard to see

  2622. but he is

  2623. with us

  2624. in our

  2625. afflictions

  2626. and the

  2627. flame will

  2628. not go

  2629. out

  2630. he is

  2631. faithful

  2632. to give

  2633. preserving

  2634. grace

  2635. there's so

  2636. many

  2637. great

  2638. wonderful

  2639. scripture

  2640. passages

  2641. he carries

  2642. us through

  2643. the water

  2644. he will be

  2645. with us

  2646. through the

  2647. rivers

  2648. they will

  2649. not

  2650. overflow

  2651. he is

  2652. faithful

  2653. to preserve

  2654. us

  2655. knowing

  2656. God's

  2657. faithfulness

  2658. prevents

  2659. us

  2660. from

  2661. forsaking

  2662. Christ

  2663. in our

  2664. affliction

  2665. so he is

  2666. faithful to

  2667. keep his

  2668. covenant

  2669. promises

  2670. he is

  2671. faithful to

  2672. afflict us

  2673. and he is

  2674. faithful to

  2675. preserve us

  2676. until the

  2677. ends

  2678. let's jump

  2679. to some

  2680. application

  2681. how does

  2682. God's

  2683. faithfulness

  2684. help us

  2685. in our

  2686. anxiety

  2687. when we are

  2688. anxious about

  2689. what tomorrow

  2690. may bring

  2691. what are some

  2692. of the

  2693. passages in

  2694. scripture that

  2695. talks about

  2696. God's

  2697. faithfulness

  2698. in our

  2699. anxiety

  2700. you're

  2701. apenas

  2702. but

  2703. you're

  2704. like

  2705. you're

  2706. kind of

  2707. here

  2708. today

  2709. Mm-hmm.

  2710. Yes.

2711. If God is faithful to feed these birds,

2712. He will give you what you need.

  2713. Yeah.

  2714. Mm-hmm.

  2715. I think of Philippians 4, 6, and 7,

  2716. where it says,

2717. Don't be anxious about anything,

2718. but in everything, by prayer and petition,

2719. present your request to God.

  2720. With thanksgiving.

  2721. Thank you.

2722. I forgot what comes next.

2723. The peace of God which passes overstanding

2724. but guard your heart in your mind,

  2725. Christ Jesus.

  2726. Mm-hmm.

  2727. Mm-hmm.

  2728. So when we're anxious,

2729. we should go to God in prayer.

  2730. Mm-hmm.

  2731. Mm-hmm.

2732. Psalm 119 is very precious to me.

2733. And, you know, just God hemming you in

  2734. before and behind.

2735. Knowing every moment of your life

  2736. before it began.

2737. His presence filling the whole universe.

2738. So that wherever you are,

2739. if you think you are too low or too high for God,

2740. you know who's already there.

  2741. But it ends with,

  2742. Search me about it.

  2743. Know my heart.

2744. Try me and know my thoughts or cares.

  2745. Like anxious thoughts.

  2746. Mm-hmm.

2747. And see if there's any grievous or offensive way

2748. in leaving the everlasting way.

2749. It kind of reminds me that God's afflictions are meant to change something in me

2750. rather than so often we want to change or we want God to change the circumstances around us.

2751. Especially when, you know, sometimes our afflictions involve injustice.

  2752. Yeah.

  2753. Mm-hmm.

2754. But God also tells us to commit justice to him.

2755. And usually that means waiting.

  2756. Maybe, like, till eternity.

2757. And we're not really okay with that.

2758. That's, how could we be?

2759. Unless Christ bore every injustice on himself.

2760. And so then we just have to say,

2761. Okay, well that's something I need to change.

2762. I need to be more like Christ,

2763. committing my injustices or even just my effects, my suffering.

  2764. Sometimes suffering is meaningless.

2765. So that's, it comes seemingly out of nowhere by no human hand.

2766. You know, natural disaster or a health problem.

2767. And so something in me needs changing.

2768. I need more trust, more strength, more faith in God.

  2769. That he loves me.

  2770. Mm-hmm.

2771. That he cares for me.

2772. And that this is for me good.

  2773. Mm-hmm.

  2774. Mm-hmm.

  2775. That's good work, brother.

  2776. Thank you.

  2777. Mm-hmm.

  2778. Yes.

2779. I want to close with a story.

2780. And this is a story of Benjamin Breckenridge Warfield.

2781. In other words, he's known as B.B. Warfield.

2782. And some called him a brilliant theologian,

2783. a champion of confessional Christianity during his time at Princeton,

2784. a defender of the faith.

2785. But before all these things,

2786. the people who knew him the best would say he was a faithful husband.

2787. And many know Warfield was a world-renowned theologian

2788. for almost 34 years until he died in 1921.

2789. And he wrote famous books about the doctrine of the Trinity

2790. and the authority of Scripture.

2791. Some would say he was a formidable foe with his pen.

2792. But most people don't know what happened early in his life at age 25.

2793. He married Annie Pierce Kenheed.

2794. And they took a honeymoon to Germany.

2795. And during a fierce storm while walking in the mountains,

2796. Annie was struck by lightning,

  2797. permanently paralyzing her.

2798. There was severe trauma to her nervous system,

  2799. and she never recovered.

2800. And her health got worse as time went on.

2801. So imagine for a moment, just pause,

2802. you make your wedding vows.

  2803. Then on your honeymoon,

2804. your spouse is permanently disfigured in a car accident,

  2805. a paraplegic as a result.

2806. What do you do in that moment?

  2807. You made your vows.

2808. You promised that you'd be with that person.

2809. Well, this is the situation that Warfield faced.

2810. Writing about what gave him strength,

2811. he talked about God's faithfulness.

  2812. Romans 8, 28.

2813. He wrote about the providence of God in his life.

2814. The government of God ruling over all things,

  2815. his controlling hands.

2816. He governs all so nothing but good

2817. can befall those whom he seeks to do good.

2818. And he took comfort that even in our deepest groanings,

  2819. too deep for words,

2820. the Spirit intercedes for us

2821. according to the gracious will of God.

2822. And Warfield knew in his heart

2823. that God was faithful to him,

2824. unwavering in his commitment to do him good.

  2825. He knew Jeremiah 32, verse 1,

    Jeremiah 32:1

2826. was true in his life.

2827. I will rejoice in doing them good,

2828. and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness

2829. with all my heart and with all my soul.

2830. Remembering God's faithfulness to him

2831. reassured him in the presence.

2832. And because he knew that God was faithful to him,

2833. he in turn was faithful for 39 years to Annie.

2834. And he seldom left the home for more than a couple hours

2835. during all those years in marriage.

2836. He was a faithful husband,

2837. imitating the faithful Savior he knew so well.

  2838. And this is the,

2839. this is what is going to allow us

2840. to endure in our trials,

2841. to know that God's steadfast love

  2842. endures forever,

  2843. even in our afflictions.

2844. Christ is going to be with us,

2845. and he is faithful to us to the end.

2846. So let me pray and thank the Lord.

2847. Father, thank you that you are faithful to us.

2848. Lord, thank you that your,

2849. your faithfulness reaches to the,

2850. as high as the skies,

  2851. endures to all generations.

2852. Great is your faithfulness to your people.

2853. Oh, Lord, we do pray that's,

  2854. in our afflictions,

  2855. in our trials,

  2856. our troubles,

  2857. that we would,

  2858. with faith,

  2859. look to you

  2860. and trust in your,

  2861. your,

  2862. your,

2863. your providence in our lives.

  2864. Help us to,

  2865. to hope against hope,

  2866. to look to Christ

2867. and to see that he will not leave us,

2868. nor forsake us in our troubles.

2869. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  2870. Amen.

  2871. All right.

  2872. Thank you, friends.

  2873. Thank you.

  2874. Thank you.

  2875. Thank you all.

2876. There's one more class next week,

  2877. God's glory.

  2878. And then,

2879. that's the end of our attributes of God class.

  2880. Thank you.

  2881. Thank you.

  2882. Thank you.

  2883. Thank you.

  2884. Thank you.

  2885. Thank you.
