  1. Would you turn with me to the Gospel of Mark chapter 7?

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  2. Mark 7 verses 1 through 23 is what we'll be looking at this morning.

    Mark 7:1–23

  3. That's page 791 in the Pew Bible.

  4. If you're new to the Bible, the big numbers are the chapters

  5. and the small numbers are the verses.

  6. Mark chapter 7 verses 1 through 23.

    Mark 7:1–23

  7. Well, let me pray for us and then I'll read.

  8. Father in heaven, what a mighty prayer.

  9. We have just sung.

  10. Take my life and let it be always, only, all for thee.

  11. Father, that is the kind of posture that we desire now

  12. as we come to your word.

  13. That you would give us an openness, a surrender,

  14. a trust in what you are saying to us through your word.

  15. We know that we cannot do that in our own strength and our own desire

  16. so we pray for your spirit to come now

  17. and give us listening ears and hearts

  18. to truly hear what you are saying.

  19. God, thank you for your word,

  20. that it is clear and powerful

  21. and that it does the work you desire

  22. to exalt Christ in our midst,

  23. that we might see him and love him

  24. and be changed more and more into his image by your grace.

  25. We pray this in his mighty name.

  26. Amen.

  27. All right, Mark 7, 1 through 23.

  28. Now, when the Pharisees gathered to him,

  29. that is to Jesus,

  30. with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem,

  31. they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands

  32. that were defiled, that is, unwashed.

  33. For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat

  34. unless they wash their hands properly,

  35. holding to the tradition of the elders.

  36. And when they come from the marketplace,

  37. they do not eat unless they wash.

  38. And there are many other traditions that they observe,

  39. such as the washing of cups and pots

  40. and copper vessels and dining couches.

  41. And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him,

  42. Why do your disciples not walk

  43. according to the tradition of the elders,

  44. but eat with defiled hands?

  45. And he said to them,

  46. Well, did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites?

  47. As it is written,

  48. This people honors me with their lips,

  49. but their heart is far from me.

  50. In vain do they worship me,

  51. teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.

  52. You leave the commandment of God,

  53. and hold to the tradition of men.

  54. And he said to them,

  55. You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God

  56. in order to establish your tradition.

  57. For Moses said,

  58. Honor your father and your mother,

  59. and whoever reviles father or mother

  60. must surely die.

  61. But you say,

  62. If a man tells his father or mother,

  63. Whatever you would have gained from me is korban,

  64. that is, given to God,

  65. then you no longer permit him

  66. to do anything for his father or mother.

  67. Thus making void the word of God

  68. by your tradition that you have handed down,

  69. and many such things you do.

  70. And he called the people to him again

  71. and said to them,

  72. Hear me, all of you,

  73. and understand,

  74. there's nothing outside a person

  75. that by going into him can defile him,

  76. but the things that come out of a person

  77. are what defile him.

  78. And when he had entered the house

  79. and left the people,

  80. the disciples asked him about the parable.

  81. And he said to them,

  82. Then are you also without understanding?

  83. Do you not see

  84. that whatever goes into a person from outside

  85. cannot defile him,

  86. since it enters not his heart,

  87. but his stomach,

  88. and is expelled?

  89. Thus he declared,

  90. all foods clean.

  91. And he said,

  92. What comes out of a person

  93. is what defiles him.

  94. For from within,

  95. out of the heart of man,

  96. come evil thoughts,

  97. sexual immorality,

  98. theft,

  99. murder,

  100. adultery,

  101. coveting,

  102. wickedness,

  103. deceit,

  104. sensuality,

  105. envy,

  106. slander,

  107. pride,

  108. foolishness.

  109. All these things come from within,

  110. and they defile a person.

  111. So perhaps this has happened to you too.

  112. You're out at a restaurant,

  113. and you decide to use the restroom.

  114. And there,

  115. next to the sink,

  116. is a sign.

  117. All employees must wash their hands

  118. before returning to work.

  119. Now,

  120. I don't know about you,

  121. but two thoughts seem to simultaneously cross my mind

  122. when I see a sign like that.

  123. On the one hand,

  124. I guess I'm glad that the restaurant cares

  125. about the hygiene of their workers

  126. and the cleanliness of their food.

  127. But at the same time,

  128. I'm thinking,

  129. do the workers really need to be reminded

  130. to wash their hands before returning to work?

  131. What if the sign wasn't there?

  132. Would they forget?

  133. What does that say about the workers?

  134. What does that say about this restaurant

  135. and the food I've just eaten?

  136. Well,

  137. our passage today on the surface

  138. is about washing hands.

  139. But in Jesus' day,

  140. this topic was about much more

  141. than just personal hygiene.

  142. It was about holiness,

  143. about being clean and acceptable before God

  144. and being set apart as God's people.

  145. You see this from the language they use,

  146. that the Pharisees aren't just concerned

  147. that Jesus' disciples have dirty hands.

  148. No,

  149. the word they use is defiled.

  150. Literally,

  151. it's common,

  152. which meant at the time,

  153. ceremonially or ritually unclean.

  154. Now,

  155. there were a number of ways

  156. you could become

  157. ritually or ceremonially unclean,

  158. according to the Old Testament.

  159. Eating certain foods,

  160. having certain skin diseases,

  161. coming into contact with a dead animal

  162. or a dead body,

  163. these things and some others

  164. would render you unclean,

  165. according to the cleanliness laws

  166. of the Old Testament.

  167. And that meant,

  168. if you were unclean,

  169. that you couldn't enter the temple

  170. and you couldn't worship in God's presence

  171. with God's people.

  172. And there were certain things

  173. that you had to do

  174. that you could do

  175. to become clean again,

  176. like sacrifices or offerings

  177. or certain washings.

  178. Now,

  179. the point of all this

  180. in the Old Testament

  181. was to teach the people

  182. and to keep before the people

  183. this great fact

  184. that God is infinitely holy

  185. and we are not.

  186. and that to be in God's presence,

  187. we need a deep cleansing.

  188. We need to be washed.

  189. We need to be purified.

  190. That's what all those laws

  191. were meant to be demonstrating

  192. and teaching the people.

  193. Now,

  194. you might think that

  195. such a topic like this

  196. sounds a little irrelevant today,

  197. right?

  198. After all,

  199. you probably didn't wash your hands

  200. this morning

  201. in hopes that you'd achieve

  202. ritual purity

  203. so we'd let you in the front door

  204. of the church,

  205. right?

  206. But if you stop

  207. and think about it,

  208. the desire

  209. to be clean,

  210. the desire

  211. to be accepted,

  212. the desire

  213. to be free

  214. from stain,

  215. the desire

  216. to be whole,

  217. that desire

  218. is just as real

  219. and prevalent today

  220. as it ever has been.

  221. How many people today

  222. are longing

  223. for just that?

  224. Even if they don't have

  225. any belief in God

  226. or any kind of adherence

  227. to a traditional religion,

  228. we feel unclean

  229. and we're not even sure why.

  230. Now,

  231. the controversy

  232. that Jesus has

  233. with the Pharisees here,

  234. or rather that the Pharisees

  235. raised with him

  236. in verses 1 through 5

  237. kind of falls out

  238. into two parts.

  239. The first part

  240. in verses 6 through 13

  241. is all about

  242. who gets to define

  243. what's clean

  244. or unclean.

  245. And the second part

  246. in verses 14 through 23

  247. is about where

  248. real uncleanness

  249. comes from.

  250. So first,

  251. who gets to define it?

  252. And second,

  253. where does it really

  254. come from?

  255. And if we can see

  256. how Jesus answers

  257. those two questions,

  258. then we'll be able

  259. to see the answer

  260. that Jesus gives

  261. and the Bible gives

  262. for how to really

  263. deal with it.

  264. So first,

  265. let's look at

  266. the question of

  267. who gets to define

  268. what's clean or unclean

  269. in verses 6 through 13.

  270. And the answer

  271. that Jesus gives

  272. in a nutshell here

  273. is not human tradition,

  274. but God's word.

  275. It's not human tradition

  276. or custom

  277. that truly defines

  278. what's clean or unclean,

  279. but God's word alone.

  280. Notice the question

  281. that the Pharisees

  282. and the scribes,

  283. that is the religious experts,

  284. ask in verse 5.

  285. Why do your disciples

  286. not walk

  287. according to the tradition

  288. of the elders,

  289. but eat with defiled hands?

  290. And we see in verses 3 and 4

  291. that Mark,

  292. probably for the benefit

  293. of his Gentile readers,

  294. sort of describes briefly

  295. what some of those traditions

  296. were that they were referencing.

  297. Things like washing hands properly

  298. before eating a meal

  299. or ceremonial washing

  300. when returning

  301. from the marketplace

  302. because the marketplace

  303. obviously was a dirty place.

  304. You could have come

  305. into contact

  306. with anything unclean there.

  307. Things like rinsing cups

  308. and pots,

  309. things like even sprinkling

  310. or washing the dining furniture.

  311. Now, where did these rules

  312. come from?

  313. Well, they did not come

  314. from the Old Testament,

  315. from God's law,

  316. the Torah.

  317. These rules,

  318. they came from a body

  319. of unwritten oral tradition

  320. that had grown up

  321. and developed

  322. after the Old Testament

  323. was written.

  324. And for advocates

  325. of this oral tradition,

  326. you see,

  327. you see,

  328. well, how did that oral tradition

  329. crop up?

  330. Well, it came to be believed

  331. that the Torah,

  332. that God's word,

  333. was too ambiguous

  334. to establish and govern

  335. the Jewish community.

  336. After all,

  337. the written commandments

  338. declared what God decreed,

  339. but not always how

  340. they were supposed

  341. to be fulfilled.

  342. So the oral tradition

  343. grew up

  344. and began to prescribe

  345. in increasing detail

  346. how the intent

  347. of the Torah

  348. ought to be fulfilled

  349. in actual circumstances.

  350. And by Jesus' day,

  351. adherence

  352. to this unwritten

  353. oral tradition

  354. started to become

  355. as important

  356. for groups like the Pharisees

  357. as was their adherence

  358. to Torah itself.

  359. That the oral tradition

  360. was just as authoritative

  361. as God's word.

  362. Some people even began

  363. to believe

  364. that Moses had received

  365. two laws on Mount Sinai,

  366. the written Torah

  367. and the oral tradition,

  368. and that both

  369. had been handed down.

  370. So you can see

  371. why the Pharisees

  372. were disturbed

  373. when they saw

  374. Jesus' disciples

  375. not following

  376. the tradition

  377. of the elders.

  378. But what's Jesus' response?

  379. How does Jesus evaluate

  380. this human tradition?

  381. Verse 6,

  382. And he said to them,

  383. Well, did Isaiah prophesy

  384. of you hypocrites?

  385. As it is written,

  386. This people honors me

  387. with their lips,

  388. but their heart

  389. is far from me.

  390. In vain do they worship me,

  391. teaching as doctrines

  392. the commandments

  393. of men.

  394. That's a quote

  395. from Isaiah 29.

  396. And Jesus says,

  397. You leave the commandment

  398. of God

  399. and hold

  400. to the tradition

  401. of men.

  402. Jesus calls them

  403. hypocrites.

  404. hypocrites.

  405. That is,

  406. they're saying

  407. one thing

  408. but doing another.

  409. They're saying

  410. that they're upholding

  411. God's law,

  412. but in reality

  413. all they're doing

  414. is holding on

  415. to a man-made tradition.

  416. And this makes

  417. their worship of God,

  418. Jesus says,

  419. empty

  420. or vain.

  421. It's empty

  422. because it's not God

  423. that they're obeying

  424. or following.

  425. It's simply

  426. human custom.

  427. But the problem

  428. gets worse.

  429. It's not just

  430. that they've added

  431. human traditions

  432. to God's word.

  433. Jesus says in verse 9,

  434. you have a fine way

  435. of rejecting

  436. the commandment of God

  437. in order to establish

  438. your tradition.

  439. Jesus is saying

  440. you cannot

  441. hold on to tradition

  442. without letting go

  443. of God's commandments.

  444. Now that's quite a charge.

  445. Jesus gives the example here

  446. of the fifth commandment,

  447. honor your father

  448. and your mother,

  449. and that was

  450. such a serious command

  451. that cursing

  452. or reviling

  453. your father and mother

  454. in ancient Israel

  455. could be charged

  456. as a capital offense.

  457. Clearly this is something

  458. God takes very seriously.

  459. And yet in the first century

  460. there was a practice

  461. rooted in the oral tradition

  462. of korban,

  463. which means offering

  464. or gift

  465. as in an offering

  466. to God.

  467. What would happen

  468. is that if someone

  469. were to declare

  470. that their goods

  471. or their property

  472. or korban,

  473. it was to make

  474. a vow that said

  475. when I'm done

  476. using this property,

  477. these goods,

  478. this wealth,

  479. when I'm done

  480. using this,

  481. it's all going

  482. to be given over

  483. to God

  484. and donated

  485. to the temple.

  486. Essentially the idea

  487. was something like

  488. deferred giving,

  489. right?

  490. Today a person

  491. can will their property

  492. to a charity

  493. or an institution

  494. at their death,

  495. but in the meantime

  496. they get to keep

  497. possession over it

  498. and get to keep

  499. the proceeds

  500. and the interest

  501. that accrue from it

  502. until they die

  503. and then it goes

  504. to whatever charity

  505. they assign it to,

  506. right?

  507. Likewise,

  508. in the first century,

  509. if a son,

  510. for example,

  511. declared all his property

  512. korban,

  513. it would eventually

  514. go to the temple.

  515. But what that meant

  516. was that because

  517. it had been given

  518. to God,

  519. he didn't need

  520. to use it

  521. to take care

  522. of his aging parents.

  523. In essence,

  524. you would vow it

  525. to God

  526. and that would

  527. absolve you

  528. of any responsibility

  529. to use it

  530. during your lifetime

  531. to care for others,

  532. even your parents.

  533. And notice verse 12,

  534. Jesus says,

  535. you no longer

  536. permit him

  537. to do anything

  538. for his father

  539. or mother.

  540. There are some

  541. historical records

  542. that show that

  543. once property

  544. had been sort of

  545. vowed or offered

  546. to God in this way

  547. or promised

  548. to the temple

  549. in this way,

  550. priests would even

  551. discourage anyone

  552. from withdrawing it

  553. from korban

  554. in order to return

  555. it to regular use.

  556. Now you can see

  557. how they perhaps

  558. justified

  559. such a practice,

  560. right?

  561. After all,

  562. doesn't God

  563. deserve our very best?

  564. Doesn't our commitment

  565. to God rank higher

  566. than even our commitment

  567. to our earthly parents?

  568. And so your

  569. offering of your property

  570. to God

  571. supersedes

  572. giving to your parents,

  573. right?

  574. But in reality,

  575. the human tradition

  576. of korban

  577. nullified God's word.

  578. Rather than

  579. obeying God,

  580. they rejected

  581. what God's word

  582. plainly said.

  583. Honor your father

  584. and your mother,

  585. which certainly

  586. entailed

  587. caring for them

  588. in their aging

  589. and in their need.

  590. And this wasn't

  591. an isolated example.

  592. Jesus says,

  593. and many such things

  594. you do.

  595. This kind of thinking

  596. was standard procedure,

  597. Jesus says,

  598. elevating human tradition

  599. and thereby rejecting

  600. God's word.

  601. So who gets to define

  602. what's clean

  603. or unclean?

  604. Human tradition?

  605. Human customs?

  606. No,

  607. Jesus says,

  608. God's word

  609. alone.

  610. Any attempt

  611. to supplement

  612. or add

  613. to God's word

  614. with human tradition

  615. or human custom

  616. will only end up

  617. supplanting

  618. or undermining

  619. or replacing

  620. God's word.

  621. And this wasn't

  622. just a problem

  623. for first century Pharisees.

  624. Church history

  625. has replayed

  626. this danger

  627. again

  628. and again

  629. and again.

  630. Whenever human tradition

  631. was elevated,

  632. God's word

  633. was denigrated.

  634. And as the authority

  635. and understanding

  636. of God's word

  637. decreases,

  638. human traditions

  639. take more and more

  640. and more

  641. of an importance.

  642. So whose voice

  643. then

  644. are you listening

  645. to?

  646. Are you looking

  647. to merely human

  648. voices

  649. to tell you

  650. whether or not

  651. you're clean

  652. and acceptable?

  653. Or

  654. are you looking

  655. to God's word?

  656. The influencers

  657. on social media

  658. your peers

  659. at work

  660. or at school

  661. the great

  662. intellectuals

  663. of our day

  664. none of these

  665. can really define

  666. what's clean

  667. or unclean.

  668. Only

  669. God can.

  670. And that's a

  671. greatly liberating

  672. message.

  673. You don't have

  674. to listen

  675. to the constant

  676. noise

  677. of voices

  678. around you

  679. trying to tell you

  680. how to be okay

  681. and how to be

  682. the real you

  683. and how to be

  684. significant.

  685. You don't have

  686. to keep up

  687. with the

  688. constantly changing

  689. fads of the

  690. world in order

  691. to be whole.

  692. They can't

  693. really define

  694. what's clean

  695. or unclean.

  696. Only

  697. God can.

  698. So what does

  699. God say?

  700. Where does

  701. real uncleanness

  702. come from?

  703. That brings us

  704. to the second

  705. point of our

  706. passage.

  707. In verses

  708. 14 through

  709. 23 Jesus

  710. tells us

  711. where real

  712. uncleanness

  713. comes from.

  714. Verse 14

  715. And he called

  716. the people

  717. to him again

  718. and said to

  719. them,

  720. Hear me

  721. all of you

  722. and understand.

  723. There's nothing

  724. outside a person

  725. that by going

  726. into him

  727. can defile him.

  728. But the things

  729. that come

  730. out of a person

  731. are what

  732. defile him.

  733. Now at first

  734. this kind of

  735. confuses the

  736. disciples.

  737. They think it's

  738. kind of a

  739. parable, right?

  740. It's a little

  741. confusing.

  742. Okay, Jesus,

  743. it's not the

  744. food that we

  745. eat.

  746. It's the food

  747. that comes

  748. out.

  749. What do you

  750. mean?

  751. Right?

  752. But Jesus

  753. says, no,

  754. no, no,

  755. no, no.

  756. What I mean

  757. is, it's not

  758. what goes into

  759. your mouth

  760. that defiles

  761. you.

  762. It's what

  763. comes out

  764. of your

  765. heart.

  766. The real

  767. problem isn't

  768. foods or

  769. washings or

  770. anything outside

  771. of you.

  772. The real

  773. problem is

  774. inside of

  775. you.

  776. And it's

  777. inside of

  778. me, too.

  779. Now the

  780. truth is,

  781. friends, this

  782. passage should

  783. disturb us.

  784. We are

  785. used to

  786. hearing today

  787. that if we

  788. just get in

  789. touch with our

  790. deepest feelings

  791. or learn to

  792. listen to what

  793. our heart is

  794. truly telling

  795. us, then

  796. we will find

  797. our real

  798. identity.

  799. Then we

  800. will discover

  801. happiness and

  802. fulfillment and

  803. wholeness.

  804. It's not the

  805. externals that

  806. define us.

  807. Yes, we agree

  808. with that, but

  809. then Jesus says,

  810. but it's not the

  811. internal either.

  812. Jesus has

  813. something quite

  814. different to

  815. say.

  816. He says,

  817. getting in

  818. touch with your

  819. truest, deepest

  820. feelings won't

  821. sort you out.

  822. What if the

  823. feelings that

  824. most truly

  825. express who we

  826. currently are

  827. turn out to be

  828. murderous,

  829. adulterous,

  830. envious,

  831. foolish,

  832. arrogant,

  833. and all the

  834. rest?

  835. The fact that

  836. we have these

  837. feelings down in

  838. our hearts

  839. doesn't mean

  840. that they're

  841. validated or

  842. true or right

  843. or good.

  844. On the

  845. contrary,

  846. it means we

  847. have a problem.

  848. A problem

  849. that runs

  850. right through

  851. us.

  852. One writer

  853. put it this

  854. way,

  855. there's a

  856. crack in

  857. the building

  858. which isn't

  859. just a bit

  860. of damaged

  861. stonework on

  862. the exterior,

  863. the whole

  864. structure is

  865. faulty.

  866. Keeping

  867. external purity

  868. laws can be

  869. one way of

  870. papering over

  871. the crack,

  872. but so can

  873. quote,

  874. getting in

  875. touch with

  876. your feelings.

  877. If there's

  878. evil,

  879. it infects

  880. the whole.

  881. You see,

  882. in the

  883. Bible,

  884. the human

  885. heart that

  886. Jesus references

  887. a number of

  888. times in this

  889. passage,

  890. it's the center

  891. of your

  892. personality in

  893. the Bible.

  894. It's sort of

  895. the wellspring

  896. of your

  897. thoughts and

  898. your feelings

  899. and your

  900. actions.

  901. Jesus is

  902. telling us

  903. here that

  904. it's as if

  905. deep down

  906. in that

  907. central part

  908. of who

  909. we are,

  910. there's a

  911. computer virus

  912. running amok

  913. and it's

  914. churning out

  915. code after

  916. code after

  917. code that

  918. begin with

  919. what Jesus

  920. calls in

  921. verse 21,

  922. evil thoughts

  923. or evil

  924. intentions.

  925. It's as if

  926. there's this

  927. self-centered

  928. bent in

  929. everything that

  930. we do.

  931. And after

  932. those evil

  933. intentions,

  934. Jesus lists

  935. six nouns

  936. that in the

  937. Greek are all

  938. actually plural.

  939. The first six

  940. after evil

  941. thoughts,

  942. evil intentions,

  943. they're all in

  944. the plural as

  945. if to describe

  946. evil actions.

  947. Acts of

  948. sexual immorality,

  949. thefts,

  950. murders,

  951. adulteries,

  952. deeds of

  953. avarice or

  954. coveting,

  955. malicious acts.

  956. And then

  957. those six

  958. plural nouns,

  959. those evil

  960. acts,

  961. are followed

  962. by six

  963. nouns in

  964. the singular

  965. as if to

  966. say,

  967. here are the

  968. evil attitudes,

  969. deceit,

  970. sensuality,

  971. envy,

  972. slander,

  973. pride,

  974. foolishness.

  975. Notice there's

  976. a bit of a

  977. progression here,

  978. isn't there?

  979. From intention

  980. or desire

  981. to actions

  982. and then

  983. finally into

  984. settled attitudes

  985. or habits.

  986. So what is

  987. Jesus telling

  988. us then?

  989. Is he telling

  990. us that

  991. everything is

  992. hopeless?

  993. That humans

  994. are just

  995. awful and

  996. we should

  997. give up?

  998. No.

  999. He's telling

  1000. us that what

  1001. we need

  1002. above all

  1003. else

  1004. isn't merely

  1005. clean hands

  1006. but clean

  1007. hearts.

  1008. that's why

  1009. the Pharisees

  1010. were so

  1011. misguided.

  1012. They thought

  1013. that if they

  1014. could just

  1015. compile more

  1016. and more

  1017. traditions and

  1018. regulations about

  1019. external cleanliness

  1020. they could really

  1021. be cleaned.

  1022. But it was

  1023. never going to

  1024. work.

  1025. I ran across

  1026. an article this

  1027. week by the

  1028. jewelry designer

  1029. Alex and

  1030. Annie or

  1031. Annie and

  1032. Alex.

  1033. Kim you

  1034. know who I'm

  1035. talking about

  1036. right?

  1037. Alex and

  1038. Annie and

  1039. they said

  1040. here's how you

  1041. do a

  1042. spiritual

  1043. cleanse.

  1044. They listed a

  1045. few things.

  1046. One was take

  1047. a bath.

  1048. The other was

  1049. find some good

  1050. crystals that

  1051. you could sort

  1052. of harness

  1053. their energy.

  1054. The other was

  1055. sort of light

  1056. some incense

  1057. and do some

  1058. herbal kind of

  1059. incense around

  1060. your room.

  1061. The other was

  1062. write down the

  1063. name of all the

  1064. people who've

  1065. offended you and

  1066. then burn it.

  1067. Right?

  1068. Now none of

  1069. those things are

  1070. wrong right?

  1071. I don't know about

  1072. the crystal thing

  1073. but you know

  1074. those can all be

  1075. relaxing or

  1076. therapeutic.

  1077. But it seems a

  1078. little pharisaical

  1079. doesn't it?

  1080. More and more

  1081. external practices

  1082. to try to find

  1083. an internal

  1084. cleansing.

  1085. But you know

  1086. the other

  1087. strategy that we

  1088. try today is

  1089. justice misguided.

  1090. You know we

  1091. tell people to

  1092. follow their

  1093. feelings and

  1094. trust their

  1095. heart and

  1096. then they'll

  1097. be whole.

  1098. But that can

  1099. never work

  1100. either.

  1101. So what's the

  1102. answer?

  1103. How do we get

  1104. a clean heart?

  1105. Well you know

  1106. the answer isn't

  1107. actually found in

  1108. our passage this

  1109. morning per se.

  1110. In this passage

  1111. Jesus only

  1112. diagnoses the

  1113. problem.

  1114. And the

  1115. problem is more

  1116. radical than we

  1117. could have ever

  1118. imagined isn't it?

  1119. You know it's so

  1120. easy for us to

  1121. think about

  1122. external things we

  1123. need to change to

  1124. be okay.

  1125. But Jesus is

  1126. saying you've got

  1127. to go much

  1128. deeper than that.

  1129. But there is a

  1130. hint in our

  1131. passage that

  1132. points to the

  1133. answer that the

  1134. rest of Mark's

  1135. gospel gives.

  1136. There's a hint.

  1137. Did you notice at

  1138. the end of verse

  1139. 19 how Mark

  1140. gives this little

  1141. editorial comment?

  1142. He says,

  1143. thus Jesus

  1144. declared all

  1145. foods clean.

  1146. It's such a

  1147. short little

  1148. statement that we

  1149. miss how radical

  1150. it is.

  1151. After all, do you

  1152. see what Jesus

  1153. just did in this

  1154. passage?

  1155. Mark underlines it

1156. for us at the end

  1157. of verse 19 with

  1158. this little

  1159. parenthetical aside.

  1160. For thousands of

  1161. years God had

  1162. taught the people

  1163. of Israel that

  1164. some foods were

  1165. clean and some

  1166. were unclean and

  1167. it mattered a lot

  1168. which ones you

  1169. ate and didn't

  1170. eat.

  1171. And by doing so

  1172. God was teaching

  1173. his people that

  1174. they needed to be

  1175. holy and clean and

  1176. set apart in order

  1177. to be in his

  1178. presence, in order

  1179. to be his people.

  1180. But now in an

  1181. instant Jesus

  1182. declares all foods

  1183. are clean.

  1184. Just like that.

  1185. Isn't that

  1186. amazing?

  1187. After just

  1188. excoriating the

  1189. Pharisees for

  1190. elevating human

  1191. tradition above

  1192. God's word,

  1193. Jesus comes and

  1194. says, I'm telling

  1195. you all foods are

  1196. clean.

  1197. Tells you a little

  1198. something about who

  1199. Jesus thought he

  1200. was, doesn't it?

  1201. Now that I'm

  1202. here, Jesus is

  1203. saying, the purity

  1204. laws are reaching

  1205. their fulfillment.

  1206. Under the old

  1207. covenant, Jesus is

  1208. saying, my father

  1209. taught you about

  1210. your need to be

  1211. made clean.

  1212. clean.

  1213. But now, all

  1214. that is coming

  1215. to its

  1216. fulfillment, to

  1217. its goal.

  1218. What those

  1219. clean laws were

  1220. meant to teach

  1221. you, what they

  1222. were meant to

  1223. point to, it's

  1224. here.

  1225. The Old

  1226. Testament spoke

  1227. of purity and

  1228. set up the laws

  1229. as signposts to

  1230. it.

  1231. But now Jesus

  1232. was offering the

  1233. reality.

  1234. Does that mean

  1235. the laws were

  1236. worthless or

  1237. pointless?

  1238. No.

  1239. Not at all.

  1240. Think about it.

  1241. If you arrive at

  1242. a destination, you

  1243. don't need the

  1244. signposts anymore,

  1245. right, that lead

  1246. you there.

  1247. But that's not

  1248. because the

  1249. signposts were

  1250. wrong, but because

  1251. they've led you to

  1252. the right place.

  1253. The signposts did

  1254. their job and they

  1255. were good.

  1256. But now that you're

  1257. there, you don't

  1258. need them anymore.

  1259. The clean laws were

  1260. pointing to Jesus

  1261. the whole time.

  1262. You see, this is

  1263. where Jesus and

  1264. the Pharisees

  1265. perhaps most

  1266. profoundly differed.

  1267. The Pharisees saw

  1268. the Old Testament

  1269. primarily as a

  1270. book of rules that

  1271. needed to be

  1272. explained and

  1273. applied through an

  1274. ever-increasing body

  1275. of human traditions

  1276. and regulations.

  1277. But the Old

  1278. Testament isn't

  1279. primarily a code of

  1280. behavior.

  1281. God's word

  1282. primarily is a story

  1283. which leads to

  1284. Jesus as its

  1285. fulfillment.

  1286. Yes, God does

  1287. give us laws and

  1288. they're good.

  1289. But we don't get

  1290. clean through an

  1291. ever-increasing list

  1292. of regulations.

  1293. We get clean

  1294. through the person

  1295. of Jesus.

  1296. Not through what we

  1297. do or don't do,

  1298. but through what

  1299. Jesus has done.

  1300. But how does that

  1301. work?

  1302. Jesus was able to

  1303. fulfill the purity

  1304. laws of the Old

  1305. Testament because

  1306. he was the ultimate

  1307. sacrifice that makes

  1308. us clean.

  1309. When God became a

  1310. human being in

  1311. Jesus Christ, he was

  1312. able in his

  1313. humanity to take

1314. all of our dirt and

1315. all of our stains and

1316. all of our guilt and

1317. shame and he was able

  1318. to take them and

1319. bear them up on the

  1320. cross.

  1321. In love, he took

  1322. the place of

  1323. everyone who would

  1324. admit their uncleanness

  1325. and trust in him.

1326. And when he died in

1327. our place, all of our

  1328. spiritual uncleanness

  1329. died with him.

  1330. That unclean heart

  1331. that we all have

  1332. stopped beating

  1333. when Jesus was put

  1334. in the grave.

  1335. But then,

  1336. three days later,

  1337. he rose.

  1338. A new

  1339. thing was born

  1340. on Easter

  1341. Sunday

  1342. in our humanity

  1343. coming out of the

  1344. tomb.

  1345. The apostle Paul

  1346. says he rose

  1347. for our

  1348. justification.

  1349. You see, a new

  1350. covenant was now in

  1351. place.

  1352. The old covenant

  1353. that God set up

  1354. through Moses was

  1355. now fulfilled by

  1356. Jesus.

  1357. All its demands

  1358. had been obeyed.

  1359. All its penalties

  1360. had been paid.

  1361. Now, the only thing

1362. that was left to do

  1363. was simply to trust

1364. in the one who had

  1365. done it for you.

  1366. This is the new

  1367. covenant in Jesus

  1368. Christ.

  1369. You and I

  1370. give him

  1371. your sinful heart

  1372. and in return

1373. he gives you a new

  1374. heart.

  1375. A heart of flesh

  1376. filled with his

  1377. spirit

  1378. that beats for him

  1379. in the power

  1380. of his resurrection.

  1381. Now, that doesn't

  1382. mean that you'll

  1383. never struggle

  1384. with sin

  1385. as a Christian.

  1386. Christians will

  1387. battle with sin

  1388. until the day

  1389. we meet Christ

  1390. in glory.

  1391. But what it does

  1392. mean

  1393. is that sin's

  1394. power won't

  1395. rule over you.

  1396. There's a new

  1397. principle now

  1398. at work in you.

  1399. Working out

  1400. not evil practices

  1401. and evil attitudes

  1402. but putting you

  1403. on a trajectory

  1404. of righteousness

  1405. and truth

  1406. and justice.

  1407. Because you've

  1408. been made new.

  1409. Because you've

  1410. been made whole.

  1411. Because Christ

  1412. has made you

  1413. clean.

  1414. And if that's

  1415. true of you

  1416. in Christ

  1417. then you won't

  1418. need the external

  1419. voices

  1420. of human

  1421. customs or

  1422. traditions

  1423. to validate

  1424. you.

  1425. What a wonderful

  1426. thing

  1427. to not have

  1428. to live

  1429. according to

  1430. the ever-changing

  1431. attitudes and

  1432. customs and

  1433. traditions

  1434. of a world

  1435. that can't quite

  1436. figure out

  1437. what it thinks.

  1438. And it also

  1439. means that you

  1440. won't need to

  1441. search your

  1442. internal voices

  1443. of your heart

  1444. either.

  1445. You don't have

  1446. to go on some

  1447. hunt to find

  1448. the real you

  1449. deep in the

  1450. swirling desires

  1451. of your own

  1452. psyche.

  1453. Because you're

  1454. rooted in

  1455. something much

  1456. more sure

  1457. and lasting

  1458. and secure.

  1459. You've found

  1460. your identity

  1461. in God's word

  1462. and God's son

  1463. alive and active

  1464. in you

  1465. through God's

  1466. spirit.

  1467. And that's the

  1468. cleanness,

  1469. that's the

  1470. wholeness

  1471. that you and I

  1472. were made for.

  1473. Let's pray

  1474. together.

  1475. Our Father in

  1476. heaven, we take

  1477. a moment

  1478. in the stillness

  1479. here together

  1480. gathered as your

  1481. people

  1482. to confess

  1483. that we not

  1484. only have

  1485. unclean

  1486. hands

  1487. but we have

  1488. unclean

  1489. hearts.

  1490. Lord, we

  1491. don't like

  1492. admitting this.

  1493. We don't like

  1494. admitting that

  1495. we need a

  1496. solution that

  1497. goes as deep

  1498. as our very

  1499. heart.

  1500. And yet,

  1501. Father, we

  1502. thank you

  1503. that this is

  1504. the very

  1505. solution you've

  1506. provided in

  1507. Christ.

  1508. We pray that

  1509. by your spirit

  1510. you would be

  1511. doing your

  1512. work in

  1513. our hearts

  1514. that changes

  1515. from the

  1516. inside out

  1517. by your

  1518. grace.

  1519. Father, for

  1520. those who are

  1521. here this

  1522. morning who

  1523. are still

  1524. considering

  1525. Christianity,

  1526. considering the

  1527. claims of

  1528. Jesus to be

  1529. Lord, to be

  1530. the real

  1531. cleanser, God,

  1532. I pray that you

  1533. would help

  1534. them to see

  1535. Christ in all

  1536. of his beauty

  1537. and to trust

  1538. in him.

  1539. Father, and for

  1540. those that you

  1541. have drawn to

  1542. yourself, into

  1543. your family, into

  1544. your church, for

  1545. those who you've

  1546. given this new

  1547. birth in this

  1548. clean heart, God,

  1549. I pray that we

  1550. would continue to

  1551. put sin to

  1552. death and walk

  1553. in paths of

  1554. righteousness for

  1555. your namesake.

  1556. Lord, and help us

1557. as a church to be

  1558. guided always and

  1559. ever by your

  1560. word.

  1561. To not let human

  1562. traditions or

  1563. customs drive us

  1564. by fear or by

  1565. pride, but to let

  1566. your word always do

  1567. its work in our

  1568. midst, leading us

  1569. and guiding us

  1570. into all truth.

  1571. We pray this,

  1572. Father, in the

  1573. mighty name of

  1574. Jesus.

  1575. Amen.
