  1. Have you ever been afraid to approach someone?

  2. A professor for help, a coach with a special request, a judge.

  3. Have you ever been afraid?

  4. I think of Dorothy and her friends, the scarecrow, the tin man, and the cowardly lion

  5. as they step into that long green hallway in the Emerald City,

  6. approaching to the throne room of the Wizard of Oz, the great and powerful Oz,

  7. how they trembled before him, overwhelmed by the pomp and circumstance.

  8. Have you ever felt that way as you've approached others?

  9. Have you ever felt that way about approaching God as well?

  10. Do you tremble to come to him?

  11. Maybe like Dorothy, you feel like God is overwhelming and unwelcoming,

  12. that the God of the universe will have no time for you

  13. and that you have no place and no standing to come before him.

  14. Now, it's also very possible in our world today that you don't feel that way at all.

  15. You may think, Jesus is our friend.

  16. We can walk in whenever we want, invite him to sit down on the couch, have a cup of tea with us.

  17. And maybe, as C.S. Lewis puts it, we are even putting God in the dock.

  18. We don't approach him in fear and trembling.

  19. We ask him to come and prove himself to us.

  20. We put him on trial in our own hearts and minds.

  21. And we approach him with not only boldness, but an arrogance that he has to meet our standards and our needs.

  22. However we think about approaching God this morning, the Bible always comes to challenge us,

  23. to challenge our assumptions.

  24. And this morning, we're going to look at a passage in the book of Mark,

  25. where we see Jesus responding in an unexpected way,

  26. ways that will help us see him more clearly,

  27. and help us to know how we rightly should approach God.

  28. So, we're in a series in the book of Mark.

  29. We're in Mark chapter 7.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  30. We're looking this morning at Mark 7, verses 24 through 30.

    Mark 7:24–30

  31. I forgot to look that up in the Pew Bibles.

  32. Does anyone have a page number for me?

  33. 791?

  34. Great.

  35. Thanks, Melissa.

  36. So, 791, if you're using the Pew Bibles,

  37. we're going to read this passage and pray together.

  38. As you're turning there, remember,

  39. Jesus has been preaching about the kingdom of God is at hand,

  40. and expressing that through his own ministry,

  41. to the people that he's around and with.

  42. And so, with that, let's go ahead and read our passage.

  43. This is Mark 7, starting in verse 24.

  44. And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

  45. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know,

  46. yet he could not be hidden.

  47. But immediately a woman, whose little daughter was possessed

  48. by an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.

  49. Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth.

  50. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

  51. And he said to her,

  52. let the children be fed first,

  53. for it's not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.

  54. But she answered him,

  55. yes, Lord,

  56. even the dogs under the table eat,

  57. yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.

  58. And he said to her,

  59. for this statement you may go your way.

  60. The demon has left your daughter.

  61. And she went home and found the child lying in bed,

  62. and the demon gone.

  63. Let's pray together.

  64. Lord Jesus, we come to you this morning and we ask for your help.

  65. We ask for your Holy Spirit to be with us.

  66. Lord, to enlighten our minds,

  67. to soften our hearts.

  68. Lord, so that we might understand

  69. and receive your word to us this morning.

  70. Lord, help me as I speak,

  71. that I would speak as I ought,

  72. and that we together would sit under your word today.

  73. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  74. Amen.

  75. So as we continue through the Gospel of Mark,

  76. we're looking at these portraits of Jesus

  77. so that we might understand him

  78. and what the coming of the kingdom of God looks like more clearly.

  79. And today we have this,

  80. in my mind,

  81. unexpected account.

  82. We see Jesus

  83. in unexpected circumstances,

  84. we see Jesus responding in unexpected ways,

  85. and we hear Jesus affirm an unexpected faith.

  86. So there's your outline if you're a note taker.

  87. Unexpected circumstances,

  88. Jesus responding in unexpected ways,

  89. and affirming an unexpected faith.

  90. So let's just walk through this passage together.

  91. Jesus is in unexpected circumstances.

  92. This is the one place in the Gospel of Mark

  93. where Jesus actually departs from

  94. the primarily Jewish world of Israel.

  95. He goes to Tyre and Sidon,

  96. which if in your map,

  97. your mental map,

  98. here's Israel.

  99. Tyre and Sidon is modern-day Lebanon.

  100. So it's north and along the coast.

  101. Historically,

  102. this was a place of antagonism

  103. toward the Jewish people.

  104. This was the home,

  105. after all,

  106. of Jezebel,

  107. the wife of King Ahaz,

  108. who led the king

  109. of the northern tribes of Israel

  110. into idolatry

  111. and worship of Baal.

  112. Historically,

  113. it's also true

  114. that this was a place

  115. who,

  116. that allied with

  117. the opponents

  118. of the Maccabeans

  119. when the Maccabean Jewish people

  120. tried to revolt

  121. against the rule

  122. of the Seleucids,

  123. for those of you

  124. who know ancient

  125. Near Eastern history.

  126. So this was a place

  127. where the enemies

  128. of the people of Israel,

  129. the nation of Israel,

  130. lived.

  131. One commentator says,

  132. they represented

  133. the most extreme expression

  134. of paganism,

  135. both actually

  136. and symbolically,

  137. that a Jewish person

  138. could expect

  139. to encounter.

  140. Why did Jesus go there?

  141. Well,

  142. it seems like

  143. he went away

  144. to get away

  145. from the crowds

  146. and to be

  147. in an unknown place.

  148. He was hoping,

  149. remember,

  150. going back to chapter 6,

  151. verse 30,

  152. Jesus and his disciples

  153. have been trying

  154. to get away

  155. to a quiet place.

  156. They've gone

  157. into the wilderness

  158. twice and failed

  159. both times.

  160. The crowd found them

  161. both times.

  162. So now they decide,

  163. and I've done this,

  164. I'm going to go

  165. to a coffee shop

  166. in the middle

  167. of a really busy city

  168. where I don't think

  169. I know anyone

  170. because that's

  171. the best place

  172. to be anonymous

  173. and to hide.

  174. I think that's

  175. what Jesus is doing.

  176. It says he wanted

  177. to be hidden.

  178. He didn't want anyone

  179. to know where he was

  180. so that he could rest.

  181. And yet,

  182. as we see over and over again,

  183. Jesus plans to rest

  184. in that way,

  185. seem to be foiled

  186. by the sovereignty of God.

  187. And a woman walks in,

  188. and Mark makes very clear

  189. who this person is.

  190. It is a woman,

  191. a Gentile,

  192. a Syrophoenician.

  193. Again,

  194. a commentator.

  195. Of all the people

  196. who approach Jesus,

  197. this is the person most,

  198. this is the individual

  199. who has the most

  200. against her

  201. from a Jewish perspective.

  202. The cultural expectation

  203. was that Jesus

  204. wouldn't even see her,

  205. let alone respond to her.

  206. She comes in.

  207. She'd heard of what Jesus

  208. had been doing

  209. in other places.

  210. She falls on her knees

  211. before him,

  212. and she begs him,

  213. please help my little daughter.

  214. She has a demon.

  215. She needs help.

  216. She didn't know

  217. how he would respond.

  218. Did she hope

  219. that she would find grace?

  220. Did she fear

  221. that she would be rejected?

  222. Did she presume

  223. that because he'd done it,

  224. because Jesus had done

  225. these things in other places,

  226. he would do it here?

  227. The text doesn't say,

  228. but it seems like

  229. she came humbly,

  230. and she begged him for help.

  231. And this is the unexpected

  232. circumstances

  233. that Jesus finds himself in.

  234. How would Jesus respond?

  235. Look with me in verse 27.

  236. This is the striking part

  237. of the story, isn't it?

  238. This is not what you expect.

  239. And it's not what you expect

  240. because we've read other stories.

  241. People have come out of nowhere

  242. and encountered Jesus

  243. and engaged Jesus

  244. in remarkable ways.

  245. Remember the woman

  246. that interrupted Jesus

  247. going with Jairus

  248. to Jairus' house.

  249. The woman who was an outcast

  250. and unclean,

  251. though she was Jewish.

  252. And he stops

  253. and he cares for her

  254. with compassion.

  255. Remember Jesus

  256. encountering the man

  257. possessed by a demon

  258. in the Gerasene wilderness.

  259. How he comes to him

  260. with compassion

  261. and comfort.

  262. But here,

  263. it doesn't feel this way,

  264. does it?

  265. Jesus' response,

  266. let the children be fed first,

  267. for it's not right

  268. to take the children's bread

  269. and throw it to the dogs.

  270. It feels off-putting at best.

  271. What we fear

  272. that he's saying

  273. is things like,

  274. this woman is no better

  275. than a dog.

  276. And being dismissive

  277. and rude

  278. and shaming.

  279. Or at least looking at her

  280. and saying,

  281. as a Gentile,

  282. as an enemy

  283. of the people of God,

  284. I refuse you.

  285. That he's going to reject her.

  286. That's what it feels

  287. like he's saying.

  288. But are we right

  289. in that first

  290. uncomfortable read?

  291. Is that really

  292. what Jesus means?

  293. Let's look a little bit

  294. more carefully

  295. at what he's saying.

  296. Because what Jesus

  297. is doing here,

  298. I don't think

  299. is doing that.

  300. Jesus is using

  301. a figure of speech,

  302. a parable,

  303. so to speak,

  304. about the nature

  305. of families.

  306. He's saying

  307. there is a priority.

  308. When we sit down

  309. as a family,

  310. there is food

  311. on the table

  312. and it's for the children.

  313. Right?

  314. And the food

  315. that's on the table

  316. should not be removed

  317. from the children

  318. and put on the floor

  319. for other people

  320. in the family,

  321. the dogs of the family,

  322. who live under it.

  323. The word dog here

  324. is a pretty unique word

  325. in the New Testament.

  326. It is not the normal word

  327. for dogs

  328. and you see in other places

  329. where you see dog

  330. used as an epithet

  331. towards people

  332. in the Bible.

  333. Where you see it

  334. being used

  335. as a derogatory term

  336. like you're a street dog

  337. that eats the garbage

  338. and feeds on corpses

  339. and this is the vision

  340. that some rabbis

  341. had of dogs

  342. more generally

  343. in the world.

  344. But this word

  345. is a different word

  346. than that.

  347. It's the word

  348. for foofy.

  349. You know?

  350. The dog

  351. that sits on your lap.

  352. Every day

  353. for a beloved family pet

  354. who is a part

  355. of the family.

  356. And listen carefully

  357. what Jesus says.

  358. He says,

  359. it's not that the food

  360. never gets to the dog

  361. but there is a priority here.

  362. There is a kingdom pattern here.

  363. Both the children

  364. and the dogs

  365. are a part of the family.

  366. Both of them

  367. are loved

  368. but they are different.

  369. there is a distinction made.

  370. And Jesus here

  371. seems to be using

  372. this parable

  373. to talk about

  374. a broad theme

  375. of the Bible

  376. where there is

  377. a kingdom pattern

  378. of the Jews first

  379. and then the Gentiles.

  380. Why do I say this?

  381. Well,

  382. go all the way back

  383. to Genesis 12.

  384. The very beginning.

  385. God comes to Abraham.

  386. He says,

  387. I'm calling you

  388. to be the father

  389. of a great nation

  390. and I will bless you

  391. and I will make you

  392. into a great nation.

  393. Your children

  394. will be

  395. the Jewish people,

  396. the people of God

  397. and I will bless them

  398. and I will make them

  399. a blessing.

  400. Right?

  401. In you

  402. all the families

  403. of the earth

  404. will be blessed.

  405. And so God

  406. chooses one man

  407. to show

  408. his particular grace to,

  409. one people

  410. to show

  411. his particular grace to,

  412. but also

  413. more importantly

  414. through.

  415. So it's not just

  416. terminal

  417. in his love

  418. for his family,

  419. this people of God,

  420. but through them

  421. to all the families

  422. of the earth.

  423. And so this is the story

  424. of the whole Old Testament.

  425. God raising up a people

  426. to display his glory

  427. and to be a blessing

  428. to the whole world.

  429. And we know

  430. when we read the Old Testament

  431. that they failed

  432. miserably about it.

  433. So we get to Isaiah 49

  434. where the people of God

  435. have completely blown it

  436. and are facing

  437. God's judgment

  438. and God comes along

  439. and he says,

  440. I'm not done.

  441. I'm going to raise up

  442. from among you

  443. a servant,

  444. one whom I'm going

  445. to send.

  446. Says it is too light

  447. a thing that you

  448. should be my servant

  449. to raise up

  450. the tribes of Jacob

  451. and to bring back

  452. the preserved of Israel.

  453. He is going to do that,

  454. but more than that,

  455. I will make you

  456. a light for the nations

  457. that my salvation

  458. may reach

  459. to the ends

  460. of the earth.

  461. And so God comes in

  462. and he says,

  463. throughout the Old Testament

  464. there is this plan

  465. through this people

  466. to the whole world.

  467. And even in the Gospels,

  468. even as Jesus

  469. begins his ministry,

  470. he does this as well.

  471. In Matthew 10

    Matthew 10:5

  472. verses 5 and 6

  473. when Jesus sends out

  474. his disciples,

  475. he says,

  476. go nowhere

  477. among the Gentiles

  478. and enter no town

  479. of the Samaritans,

  480. but go rather

  481. to the lost sheep

  482. of the house

  483. of Israel.

  484. Jesus started

  485. his mission

  486. as a Jewish man

  487. to his people,

  488. the Jewish people.

  489. It was never

  490. the end goal,

  491. but it was

  492. the starting place

  493. for how he was

  494. going to do this.

  495. That God would work

  496. through the Jewish people

  497. to bless the whole world.

  498. Now,

  499. why does he do this?

  500. Well,

  501. friends,

  502. there are times

  503. when we are

  504. standing on the brink

  505. of the mysteries of God.

  506. But if I could propose

  507. a few thoughts,

  508. I have two of them.

  509. One

  510. is that he's going,

  511. he wants to do this

  512. to show the particularity

  513. of his love.

  514. When he chooses Abraham,

  515. when he chooses

  516. a Jewish people,

  517. right,

  518. Deuteronomy reminds us

  519. that it's not because

  520. they were particularly

  521. holy or special

  522. or large

  523. or powerful

  524. or anything,

  525. but so that he might

  526. display the particularity

  527. of his love

  528. so that those

  529. who receive it

  530. might know.

  531. It's not this vague

  532. general sense

  533. that the universe

  534. has a well-being

  535. towards you,

  536. but it's a particular

  537. love of a personal God

  538. towards his people.

  539. And secondly,

  540. it's for humility.

  541. When in that

  542. Deuteronomy passage,

  543. God is reminding

  544. the people of Israel

  545. through Moses,

  546. I chose you

  547. not because

  548. you had anything

  549. in you

  550. that was particularly

  551. lovely

  552. or that you could

  553. ever earn this.

  554. You didn't deserve

  555. my love.

  556. You didn't earn

  557. my love.

  558. You didn't gain it

  559. because you were,

  560. met some standard

  561. of mine.

  562. It was purely

  563. of grace.

  564. And so,

  565. you must know

  566. the walk

  567. of humility

  568. to receive it.

  569. To receive it

  570. not because

  571. you've done anything

  572. to earn it

  573. or to achieve it,

  574. but simply

  575. because I have chosen

  576. to give it to you.

  577. And so,

  578. this is the pattern.

  579. And Jesus'

  580. little parable

  581. about the way

  582. families work

  583. is to confront

  584. this woman

  585. with this reality

  586. because Jesus

  587. is outside

  588. of the initial circle

  589. for the first time.

  590. But notice

  591. that Jesus

  592. is very careful

  593. in the way,

  594. look back with me

  595. in verse 27 again.

  596. I want you to look

  597. with me.

  598. Let the children

  599. be fed first

  600. for it is not right

  601. to take the children's bread

  602. and throw it

  603. to the dogs.

  604. Right?

  605. The children

  606. are to be fed first,

  607. not the children

  608. are to be fed

  609. only.

  610. Right?

  611. Not that the dogs

  612. are meant to be

  613. put out of the room

  614. and would never

  615. gain from this,

  616. but that there

  617. is a priority

  618. that Jesus

  619. is saying here

  620. about how

  621. his kingdom works.

  622. That she has

  623. no claim on him.

  624. She has no grounds

  625. to seek his mercy.

  626. He is not being

  627. demeaning

  628. or rude.

  629. He is trying

  630. to reveal

  631. something in her.

  632. So,

  633. this is Jesus

  634. unexpected response

  635. that challenges us.

  636. What is he doing?

  637. Ultimately,

  638. I think

  639. he's trying

  640. to reveal

  641. something in her.

  642. And this is

  643. our third point.

  644. From this

  645. unexpected word

  646. from Jesus,

  647. he reveals

  648. an unexpected faith

  649. in this woman.

  650. Because the woman's

  651. response shows us

  652. that she understands

  653. what Jesus is saying

  654. far better

  655. than we do.

  656. She is not offended.

  657. Instead,

  658. she engages

  659. with his words.

  660. She recognizes it

  661. and is willing

  662. to affirm the order

  663. and the distinction

  664. that Jesus is making.

  665. She says,

  666. I know I don't have

  667. a right to sit

  668. at the table.

  669. I'm a Gentile,

  670. not an Israelite.

  671. I know I don't

  672. deserve this.

  673. And yet,

  674. thirdly,

  675. you see that she

  676. has faith.

  677. Isn't the kingdom

  678. of God a feast

  679. that will feed us too?

  680. Isn't there a blessing,

  681. a crumb

  682. of your kingdom

  683. that I can get

  684. as well?

  685. R.C. Sproul

  686. said it this way

  687. and I thought

  688. this was just

  689. so well said.

  690. So forgive me

  691. for preaching his words

  692. for a minute here.

  693. She didn't stand up

  694. and protest

  695. and say,

  696. how dare you insult me

  697. and speak to me

  698. as if I were a dog

  699. even if it's a household pet.

  700. I'm no dog,

  701. I'm a woman.

  702. That was not her response.

  703. Her response was,

  704. yes, Lord,

  705. I understand.

  706. I have no prior claim

  707. to your mercy.

  708. I am not numbered

  709. among your children.

  710. I can't jump up

  711. on the table

  712. and feast upon the food

  713. that you've set

  714. before your children.

  715. I don't want that.

  716. I'm satisfied,

  717. Lord,

  718. with the crumbs.

  719. All I'm asking

  720. is that you would

  721. just let one crumb

  722. that falls from your table

  723. come into my mouth

  724. and I'm satisfied.

  725. Heal my daughter,

  726. please.

  727. I know she's not

  728. in your family.

  729. I know she's not numbered

  730. among your children.

  731. We are the dogs

  732. who wait for the crumbs,

  733. but one crumb

  734. is all I'm asking for.

  735. What Jesus challenged

  736. to her,

  737. reveals in her

  738. is both humility

  739. and faith.

  740. This is what we see in her.

  741. One of the reasons

  742. why I think this is so important

  743. is the context.

  744. Remember what Pastor Nick

  745. preached on last week,

  746. and if you weren't here,

  747. let me summarize it.

  748. In verses 1 through 23,

  749. Jesus encounters

  750. the Jewish leadership,

  751. the Pharisees

  752. and the rulers

  753. of the temple,

  754. and he challenges them.

  755. He says,

  756. you think that

  757. because of your pedigree,

  758. because of your righteousness,

  759. because of your external

  760. religious living,

  761. you have a right

  762. to sit at the table of God.

  763. God,

  764. he confronts them

  765. because they saw themselves

  766. as insiders

  767. that had a stake

  768. and a presumption

  769. that they were going

  770. to be blessed

  771. by the kingdom.

  772. And in contrast to this,

  773. as he confronts that,

  774. he says,

  775. no, it's instead

  776. the nature of the heart

  777. that is most important.

  778. It's the heart

  779. that I look at,

  780. not the externals.

  781. And so what I see here

  782. is that Mark

  783. puts these stories together

  784. so that we see

  785. Jesus turning

  786. from this rebuke

  787. on the insiders

  788. to this welcoming

  789. of the outsider

  790. because he sees

  791. her heart of faith.

  792. He has not turned her away.

  793. He has clarified

  794. so that everyone knows,

  795. so that she knows

  796. and her faith

  797. is rewarded.

  798. When you read this story,

  799. it's almost the throwaway

  800. for this statement.

  801. You may go your way.

  802. The demon has left

  803. your daughter.

  804. He heals her

  805. just like he has

  806. so many others

  807. throughout the gospel

  808. of Mark.

  809. And if you're wondering

  810. what in the world

  811. casting out demons

  812. and healing people like,

  813. go back and listen

  814. to our whole sermon series

  815. because we've talked

  816. about that a couple of times.

  817. So I'm not going

  818. to dwell on this today.

  819. But what it does mean

  820. is that the kingdom of God

  821. that you came here

  822. afraid that you might

  823. be rejected,

  824. uncertain as to how

  825. you would be received,

  826. Jesus says,

  827. the kingdom of God

  828. has come to your household today.

  829. The kingdom of God

  830. has come to your daughter

  831. today by faith.

  832. And friends,

  833. is this not what we see?

  834. Is this not what we see

  835. in the rest of Scripture?

  836. For we know that

  837. after Jesus' death

  838. and resurrection,

  839. the kingdom of God

  840. looks different

  841. in new and particular ways.

  842. Right?

  843. So God comes

  844. to the apostle Peter

  845. in Acts 10

  846. and reveals to him

  847. that what he declares

  848. clean is clean.

  849. And he declares

  850. all food's clean.

  851. And he breaks down

  852. the barriers

  853. and the distinguishing marks

  854. of the Jewish people.

  855. And he says,

  856. in this new,

  857. post-resurrection

  858. people of God,

  859. the thing that matters

  860. is faith in me only,

  861. not the law,

  862. not the keeping of the law

  863. because Jesus has come

  864. to fulfill the law

  865. and to then bring the law

  866. into our hearts.

  867. And so he reveals this

  868. so that Jews

  869. as well as Gentiles

  870. have access

  871. to the kingdom of God

  872. without distinction.

  873. And so the apostle Paul

  874. as he writes

  875. to the mostly Gentile

  876. Roman church

  877. in Romans 1

  878. says,

  879. I am not ashamed

  880. of the gospel

  881. for it is the power

  882. of God unto salvation

  883. for everyone

  884. who believes.

  885. Now, first to the Jew,

  886. then to the Gentile,

  887. the order still continues.

  888. There's still this sense

  889. that even now today

  890. the church is built

  891. on the foundation.

  892. As Romans 11 says,

  893. those of us

  894. who don't have

  895. Jewish heritage,

  896. we are grafted in.

  897. We are orphans

  898. that have been adopted

  899. into the family of God

  900. in new ways.

  901. But ultimately,

  902. the kingdom of God

  903. is for all

  904. who come in faith.

  905. And this is the good news

  906. of the gospel

  907. that he shows

  908. an unexpected grace

  909. to us.

  910. Because the fact is,

  911. we are all Jew

  912. and Gentile,

  913. Syrophoenician women

  914. coming.

  915. Because in our sin,

  916. we are all undeserving.

  917. We have no claim

  918. before God

  919. to say,

  920. you must accept us

  921. because these things.

  922. Instead,

  923. in our sin

  924. and our trespasses,

  925. we are enemies of God,

  926. the unrighteous

  927. who need God's cleansing.

  928. And the call of the gospel

  929. is for us to come

  930. in humble,

  931. desperate faith.

  932. and confident faith.

  933. Because Jesus says,

  934. he who comes to me,

  935. I will in no way

  936. turn away.

  937. He wants us to see

  938. that it's of all

  939. of grace.

  940. Some of you

  941. in this room

  942. probably have grown up

  943. with a Jewish heritage.

  944. Some of you

  945. may have grown up

  946. with the privilege

  947. of a Christian heritage.

  948. You may have

  949. neither of these.

  950. And you may have

  951. come out of families

  952. that neither honored

  953. nor worshiped

  954. nor knew the God

  955. of the Bible.

  956. But the good news

  957. of the gospel

  958. is that

  959. the abundant gospel

  960. of grace

  961. is for you.

  962. Jesus has come

  963. and by his life

  964. and his death

  965. and his resurrection,

  966. he has achieved

  967. a salvation

  968. for all who believe.

  969. And we can come

  970. and when we get

  971. to the end

  972. of the Bible,

  973. do you know

  974. what the beautiful

  975. thing is?

  976. We're invited

  977. to a feast.

  978. And there are no dogs

  979. under the table

  980. in this image.

  981. There is a banquet feast

  982. for all to sit in

  983. and to feast

  984. on the grace of God

  985. and the undeserved

  986. love of God

  987. that he has showered

  988. on all of his people.

  989. Right?

  990. You who have no milk,

  991. you who have no bread,

  992. you who have no money,

  993. come and eat.

  994. That's what we read

  995. from Isaiah 55.

  996. And in Revelation,

  997. it says,

  998. come and eat

  999. in the abundance

1000. of the kingdom of God

  1001. at the marriage feast

  1002. of the Lamb.

  1003. Come and taste

1004. that the Lord is good.

1005. We know that we deserve

  1006. none of it,

  1007. but have it all

  1008. by God's grace.

  1009. Friends,

1010. this is the good news

  1011. that we learn

  1012. through this

  1013. unexpected encounter.

  1014. Let's pray.

  1015. Amen.

1016. Lord, I pray this morning

  1017. that if we're those

1018. who fear to come to you

  1019. because we think

  1020. you will reject us

1021. because we're not good enough,

  1022. because we fear

  1023. that you would know

  1024. our uncleanness,

  1025. that you would know

1026. that somehow we feel like

  1027. we're unacceptable to you,

1028. Lord, I pray this morning

  1029. by your spirit

  1030. that you would pierce

  1031. our hearts

  1032. with the reality

  1033. of your kindness

  1034. and grace.

1035. Lord, and that you would

1036. fill us with a faith

  1037. that would

  1038. cause us to come,

  1039. surrender our lives

  1040. to you,

  1041. to follow you.

1042. Lord, for those of us

  1043. this morning,

  1044. Lord, whose hearts

  1045. may be hardened,

  1046. who might presume

  1047. that of course

  1048. we are yours

  1049. even though, Lord,

  1050. in fact we walk

  1051. in neither faith

  1052. nor humility.

  1053. God, I pray you

  1054. would pierce our hearts

  1055. so that we might

  1056. see our presumption

  1057. and repent of it.

1058. And Lord, I pray for us

  1059. as a community,

  1060. Lord, that we would

  1061. know the joy,

1062. the joy that the gospel

1063. of grace is for all people,

  1064. that we would know

  1065. the joy of that

  1066. being for us

  1067. and Lord,

  1068. that we would be

  1069. those who embody

  1070. that welcome

  1071. to others

  1072. for our good

  1073. and for your glory.

  1074. We pray this

  1075. in Jesus' name.

  1076. Amen.
