  1. Well, good morning, church. Would you turn with me to Mark chapter 8?

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  2. Our sermon text today is Mark chapter 8, verses 1 through 10.

    Mark 8:1–10

  3. You can find that on page 792 in the Pew Bible.

  4. Mark chapter 8. Let me pray for us, and then I'll read.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  5. Amen.

  6. Our Father in heaven, we ask that as we come to your word now, your spirit would come and guide us into all truth.

  7. Lord, help us to see clearly who you are and who you've revealed yourself to be and who you've called us to be in your word.

  8. Lord, we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  9. All right, Mark chapter 8, verses 1 through 10. Let me read for us.

    Mark 8:1–10

  10. And his disciples answered him, How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?

  11. And he asked them, How many loaves do you have?

  12. And they said, Seven.

  13. And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground.

  14. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people.

  15. And they set them before the crowd.

  16. And they had a few small fish.

  17. And having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them.

  18. And they ate and were satisfied.

  19. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.

  20. And there were about 4,000 people.

  21. And he sent them away.

  22. And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

  23. Well, if you've been following Mark's gospel up to this point, his account of the life of Jesus,

  24. this particular story probably sounds familiar.

  25. There's a great crowd in a desolate place.

  26. Jesus is teaching them.

  27. The people are hungry.

  28. And miraculously, thousands are fed with just a meager amount of food.

  29. Very similar story to what we heard back in chapter 6.

  30. Some lessons, it seems, have to be learned more than once.

  31. And so again, we see the compassion and the power of Jesus to work savingly and satisfyingly for the hungry crowds.

  32. We're told again, they ate and were satisfied.

  33. But if we are careful readers of the gospel of Mark,

  34. we realize that this isn't just a retelling of the same story that we heard before back in chapter 6.

  35. There are differences.

  36. There, the crowd was 5,000 men.

  37. Presumably plus women and children on top of that.

  38. Here, the total crowd is 4,000.

  39. There, the disciples raised the issue of the hungry crowds.

  40. Here, it's Jesus who takes the initiative.

  41. There, the leftovers filled 12 small knapsacks,

  42. which is what the word basket means in chapter 6.

  43. Here, the leftovers fill seven large bins.

  44. It's actually a different word for basket here in this story.

  45. But perhaps the most significant difference between the feeding of the 5,000 and the feeding of the 4,000

  46. is found when we consider the context.

  47. In chapter 7, verse 31, remember,

  48. we learned that Jesus has been ministering at this part of his ministry in the region of the Decapolis.

  49. That is an area on the northeastern side of the Sea of Galilee

  50. that was known to be a largely Gentile region.

  51. And as chapter 8 begins, Mark says,

  52. So consider then what Mark is showing us.

  53. And it's something that's actually been brewing all of chapter 7.

  54. Remember, in chapter 7, Jesus was debating purity laws with the Pharisees,

  55. and then he was commending the faith of a Syrophoenician woman,

  56. and then healing a man in the Decapolis who was deaf and unable to speak.

  57. What we see here is the compassion and the power of Jesus

  58. extending beyond the boundaries of Israel

  59. and reaching to the nations.

  60. Of course, this is just a foreshadowing of what was to come.

  61. You know, the Gentile mission won't begin in earnest

  62. until after Jesus' resurrection and ascension to the Father's right hand.

  63. Then the risen Jesus tells his disciples to carry the gospel,

  64. the good news of the forgiveness of sins,

  65. to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

  66. But that mission to the ends of the earth is seen even here.

  67. Jesus is the Savior for the whole world,

  68. not just for Israel.

  69. The bread he came to supply wasn't just for insiders,

  70. for religious people, for folks who knew their Bibles

  71. and lived what seemed to be a good life.

  72. No, Jesus had come for everyone,

  73. for the outsiders too,

  74. for folks who didn't know much about religion or God,

  75. for folks who couldn't find their way around the Bible

  76. unless someone gave them a page number, right?

  77. For folks whose lives were mixed up and broken

  78. and in obvious need of help.

  79. Jesus came for everyone.

  80. He's the Savior of the whole world.

  81. So consider what this means for us today.

  82. You don't need me to tell you that we live in a city

  83. where most people aren't really that familiar

  84. with Christianity or with the Bible

  85. and not really familiar with what it means

  86. to live a life in line with the truth and goodness

  87. of who God is in Christ.

  88. And maybe that's you this morning.

  89. Maybe you're just beginning to explore spiritual things

  90. and maybe you're not sure what to make of God

  91. or Jesus or any of it.

  92. Well, if you get nothing else

  93. from your time this morning,

  94. I hope you see this from Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  95. That Jesus sees you,

  96. loves you,

  97. has compassion on you,

  98. and is willing to feed your hungry soul

  99. if you come to him.

  100. It doesn't matter where you're from,

  101. which side of the lake or tracks

  102. or what side of the educational spectrum you're from.

  103. Whether your life has been good or bad or in between.

  104. Of course, if there is a God,

  105. he sees everything about you.

  106. Everything that's beautiful

  107. and everything that's selfish and petty and broken.

  108. And you know, the truth is,

  109. we humans,

  110. we're actually much worse

  111. than we think we are.

  112. But what we see in Jesus Christ

  113. is that we're also much more loved

  114. than we think we are.

  115. Jesus knew how far away

  116. some of these people had come to be with him.

  117. And he knows how far away you've been

  118. and how far away I've been.

  119. And how does he view us?

  120. With compassion

  121. and with mercy.

  122. You see, this is the great truth

  123. that every follower of Jesus

  124. learns sooner or later

  125. and that all of the apostles

  126. came to learn in time, certainly.

  127. That what puts someone right with God

  128. isn't their pedigree

  129. or their family history

  130. or their law-keeping

  131. or their moral record

  132. or their religious fervor.

  133. It didn't matter

  134. if you were from

  135. the heart of Jerusalem

  136. or from the pagan cities

  137. of the Decapolis.

  138. None of that

  139. put them in a right relationship with God.

  140. At the end of the day,

  141. the most devout, law-abiding Jew

  142. and the most pagan, immoral Gentile

  143. were both utterly and equally lost.

  144. Both had sinned against a holy God

  145. and both needed a radical rescue

  146. that only God could provide.

  147. Now, that's hard to wrap our minds around, right?

  148. I mean,

  149. does our moral record

  150. really not make any difference

  151. in getting us right with God?

  152. I mean, imagine a swimming contest, right,

  153. between me and an Olympic athlete

  154. like Michael Phelps or something.

  155. I know Michael Phelps is retired,

  156. but he would still like

  157. totally trounce me

  158. in the swimming pool, right?

  159. Obviously, he would blow me

  160. out of the water.

  161. But what if the contest

  162. was to swim, you know,

  163. not a few laps in the pool,

  164. but from New Haven Harbor here

  165. all the way to London, England?

  166. Well, on a good day,

  167. I might make it to East Haven, right?

  168. Maybe I'd hit Lighthouse Point.

  169. Probably not.

  170. But maybe a really great swimmer

  171. would go like 50 or 60 miles

  172. to Mystic, Connecticut.

  173. And yet,

  174. neither of us

  175. have even made it

  176. out of Long Island Sound.

  177. If the goal is getting to England,

  178. we're both dead in the water.

  179. Spiritually speaking,

  180. it's the same.

  181. The good swimmer,

  182. the bad swimmer,

  183. everyone falls short.

  184. You know, the real danger,

  185. the real danger

  186. is that sometimes

  187. if we think

  188. we're a good swimmer,

  189. we don't realize

  190. how much trouble

  191. we're really in.

  192. If we think

  193. we can make it

  194. across the ocean

  195. without any help,

  196. well, we're actually

  197. in worse trouble

  198. than the person

  199. grabbing for the lifeline

  200. the first chance they get

  201. because they know

  202. they don't have a chance.

  203. In other words,

  204. perhaps the worst place

  205. you can be spiritually

  206. is thinking

  207. you have it all together.

  208. Better to be like

  209. these crowds.

  210. Better to be just hungry

  211. for the words of Jesus.

  212. Better to know

  213. you need something

  214. you don't have

  215. and to look for it

  216. in Him

  217. than to think

  218. you have to perform

  219. and pretend

  220. to try to be accepted.

  221. real salvation

  222. is always

  223. and only

  224. by grace

  225. through faith

  226. in Jesus,

  227. not by works

  228. and not by

  229. your ethnic background

  230. and not by anything.

  231. He's not asking you

  232. to come to Him

  233. with a cleaned up life

  234. and a moral record.

  235. He's asking you

  236. to come to Him

  237. hungry

  238. and to let Him

  239. feed you

  240. with the living bread

  241. that only He can give.

  242. Jesus is the Savior

  243. of the whole world

  244. and that means

  245. you too

  246. if you'll come to Him.

  247. Of course,

  248. this was God's plan

  249. all along, you know.

  250. God's plan was always

  251. to bring His salvation

  252. to the ends of the earth.

  253. So what we see here

  254. in Jesus

  255. is really the fulfillment,

  256. the beginning

  257. of the fulfillment

  258. of what God had planned

  259. all along.

  260. It started all the way

  261. back with Abraham

  262. and Abraham's family.

  263. You know,

  264. the salvation story

  265. began with Israel

  266. but the goal

  267. was always

  268. to rescue

  269. the nations as well.

  270. Consider the promise

  271. even to Abraham

  272. at the very beginning.

  273. Remember,

  274. God tells Abraham

  275. in Genesis 12,

  276. I'll make you

  277. a great nation

  278. and I'll bless you

  279. and I'll make your name

  280. great so that you'll

  281. be a blessing

  282. and in you

  283. all the families

  284. of the earth

  285. will be blessed.

  286. And when Isaiah

  287. foresees the coming Messiah,

  288. he hears God say

  289. of this coming servant

  290. of the Lord

  291. in Isaiah 49,

  292. it is too light a thing

  293. that you should be

  294. my servant

  295. to raise up

  296. the tribes of Jacob

  297. and to bring back

  298. the preserved of Israel.

  299. I will make you

  300. as a light

  301. for the nations

  302. that my salvation

  303. may reach

  304. to the end of the earth.

  305. God's plan

  306. was always

  307. for his salvation

  308. to reach

  309. to the end

  310. of the earth.

  311. To be not just

  312. for Jews

  313. but to create

  314. a Jew plus Gentile

  315. people of God

  316. around the one

  317. Savior and Lord,

  318. Jesus the Messiah.

  319. The bread he came

  320. to offer,

  321. the people he came

  322. to create,

  323. the forgiveness

  324. and new life

  325. he came to purchase

  326. is for everyone

  327. who believes.

  328. And so consider

  329. what Mark

  330. is telling us

  331. also here

  332. about the majesty

  333. of this Jesus.

  334. In the ancient world,

  335. you know,

  336. every nation,

  337. every people group,

  338. they had their own gods.

  339. You know?

  340. And if you were savvy,

  341. like the Romans,

  342. for example,

  343. you would be quite

  344. pluralistic about it all.

  345. You know,

  346. you would say,

  347. well, that's fine.

  348. You worship your gods

  349. and you worship your gods

  350. and just make sure

  351. you acknowledge

  352. the Roman gods

  353. and we'll all be fine.

  354. But Mark is hinting

  355. at something quite

  356. different here.

  357. Jesus isn't just

  358. one more

  359. cultural god

  360. to be placed

  361. alongside

  362. all the other gods

  363. that might have been

  364. worshipped in the Decapolis.

  365. In fact,

  366. those so-called gods

  367. were just lifeless

  368. idols

  369. who will only

  370. leave you hungry.

  371. but there is one

  372. who can satisfy

  373. the hungry soul,

  374. one who is great enough

  375. and powerful enough

  376. and compassionate enough

  377. to meet the deepest

  378. longings of every culture

  379. in every nation

  380. in every human heart.

  381. And this is exactly

  382. who Jesus proves

  383. himself to be,

  384. majestic

  385. over all gods.

  386. Jesus is the savior

  387. of the whole world.

  388. You know,

  389. it was just a few months ago

  390. that many of us

  391. were glued

  392. to our screens,

  393. our TVs

  394. or our phones

  395. or our laptops

  396. or our tablets

  397. or whatever

  398. watching the World Cup,

  399. right?

  400. And as each round

  401. went by,

  402. we eagerly waited

  403. to see who would

  404. come out on top,

  405. who would be

  406. the world's best,

  407. who would get

  408. the glory

  409. of being crowned

  410. the World Cup winner,

  411. who would rise

  412. victorious

  413. above all the rest.

  414. But notice the difference here.

  415. Notice that with Jesus,

  416. he shows his worldwide

  417. majesty

  418. not through conquest

  419. but through service.

  420. He shows up on foreign shores

  421. amidst Gentile cities

  422. and how does he demonstrate

  423. his majesty

  424. and greatness.

  425. Is it a military campaign?

  426. Is it a political takeover?

  427. No.

  428. He has compassion

  429. on the crowds

  430. and he feeds them.

  431. He demonstrates

  432. his glory

  433. through service.

  434. Of course,

  435. the service he renders

  436. is miraculous.

  437. Thousands are fed

  438. with just seven loaves

  439. and a few small fish.

  440. But even the miracle

  441. is surprising

  442. by its simplicity.

  443. He doesn't wow

  444. the crowds

  445. with a fiery display

  446. of cosmic power.

  447. I mean,

  448. come on.

  449. If you had

  450. the kind of power

  451. of the living God

  452. and you showed up

  453. on earth

  454. and you wanted

  455. to demonstrate

  456. your greatness,

  457. you'd find some

  458. pretty awesome ways

  459. to do it.

  460. Right?

  461. I know I would.

  462. And how does Jesus

  463. do it?

  464. He serves them

  465. their daily bread.

  466. And if we can start

  467. to see this,

  468. then we're starting

  469. to see the biblical Jesus

  470. in all his majesty.

  471. The one Lord

  472. of all the nations

  473. powerful enough

  474. to make kingdoms rise

  475. and kingdoms fall.

  476. And yet he comes

  477. not to be served,

  478. but to serve.

  479. And as Mark

  480. will go on

  481. to show us

  482. in his gospel,

  483. to give his life

  484. as a ransom

  485. for many.

  486. Jesus is the Savior

  487. of the whole world

  488. who came to display

  489. his glory

  490. in compassionate

  491. service.

  492. And if this is true

  493. of Jesus,

  494. then it ought to be true

  495. of his followers.

  496. Our glory

  497. as the people

  498. of Christ

  499. will not be seen

  500. in acts of power

  501. and deeds

  502. of conquest.

  503. No,

  504. our glory

  505. is shown

  506. through Christ-like

  507. service

  508. and compassionate

  509. love.

  510. And notice,

  511. this service

  512. is not just

  513. for those

  514. who love us

  515. and who are like us,

  516. but compassionate

  517. service also

  518. for those

  519. who do not love us

  520. and who are not like us.

  521. Many Jews

  522. consider the Gentiles

  523. their enemies.

  524. And yet,

  525. even to our enemies,

  526. we must show

  527. compassion

  528. and mercy

  529. and service.

  530. This is greatness

  531. in the kingdom of God.

  532. That is real

  533. glory

  534. and majesty

  535. because this is what

  536. no other God

  537. has done.

  538. Plenty of gods

  539. tell a story

  540. of conquest

  541. and victory,

  542. of enemies slain

  543. and campaigns won.

  544. but what other God

  545. sends his only son

  546. not to destroy

  547. his enemies

  548. but to die

  549. for them?

  550. What other God

  551. lands in outsider

  552. enemy territory

  553. and gives himself

  554. to be broken

  555. so that those

  556. very rebels

  557. might be made whole?

  558. Behold the majesty

  559. of the one true God

  560. in Jesus Christ,

  561. the Savior

  562. of the whole world.

  563. And so we see then

  564. that the feeding

  565. of the 4,000

  566. isn't just a repeat

  567. of an earlier story

  568. but a demonstration

  569. by Jesus

  570. that he is the Savior

  571. not just of the Jews

  572. but of the Gentiles too.

  573. He's not just Israel's king

  574. but also the world's

  575. true Lord.

  576. And yet how often

  577. are we like the disciples

  578. in Mark 8?

  579. We look at the size

  580. of the crowd,

  581. the depth of the need,

  582. the limitation

  583. of our own resources

  584. and we think

  585. there's no way

  586. we can feed this crowd.

  587. How could we possibly

  588. see spiritual renewal

  589. in our day?

  590. How will our friends

  591. and our neighbors

  592. and our co-workers

  593. ever come

  594. to know Christ?

  595. I mean look at

  596. how far away they are.

  597. Look how stiff

  598. the cultural headwinds

  599. blow

  600. against the biblical gospel.

  601. After all,

  602. a lot of people

  603. don't just think

  604. Christians are weird,

  605. they think Christians

  606. are the problem.

  607. How could we ever hope

  608. to see our city

  609. one for Christ?

  610. How can one feed

  611. these people

  612. with bread here

  613. in this desolate place?

  614. We shake our heads

  615. at the disciples

  616. because just a couple

  617. chapters earlier

  618. Jesus had done

  619. just that.

  620. You read the story

  621. and you think,

  622. come on guys.

  623. In fact,

  624. Jesus fed

  625. an even bigger crowd

  626. with an even smaller

  627. amount of food

  628. just two chapters ago.

  629. How could they be

  630. so forgetful,

  631. we think?

  632. Don't they remember

  633. who they're with?

  634. Don't they remember

  635. who they're with?

  636. And in fact,

  637. this is exactly

  638. what Jesus will ask them

  639. in the coming verses.

  640. Pastor Matt will

  641. take a look

  642. at this next week.

  643. But if you look ahead

  644. at verse 18,

  645. Jesus says,

  646. do you not remember

  647. when I broke

  648. the five loaves

  649. for the 5,000,

  650. how many baskets

  651. full of broken pieces

  652. did you take up?

  653. And they said to him,

  654. 12.

  655. And the seven

  656. for the 4,000,

  657. how many baskets

  658. full of broken pieces

  659. did you take up?

  660. And they said to him,

  661. seven.

  662. And he said to them,

  663. do you not yet understand?

  664. Is any mission field

  665. too hard for the Lord?

  666. Is any cultural moment

  667. too irreligious

  668. for the gospel of grace?

  669. Brothers and sisters,

  670. when the apostle Paul wrote

  671. that the gospel

  672. is the power of God

  673. for salvation

  674. to those who believe,

  675. to the Jew first

  676. and also to the Greek,

  677. he was not writing

  678. to a comfortable church

  679. in a nice moral city

  680. where everyone held

  681. mostly Christian beliefs.

  682. The city of Rome

  683. in the first century

  684. celebrated violence

  685. and sex

  686. and power and greed

  687. in ways

  688. that would make

  689. even the most libertine

  690. among us

  691. more than a little uneasy.

  692. And yet,

  693. did that stop the gospel?

  694. As those Christians

  695. prayed and preached

  696. and took bread

  697. Sunday after Sunday

  698. and gave thanks

  699. and broke it

  700. and shared it,

  701. could even the Roman Empire

  702. stand up

  703. against the Savior

  704. of the whole world?

  705. Could all the armies

  706. and the wealth

  707. and the decadence

  708. of Rome

  709. stand a chance

  710. against the risen Lord Jesus

  711. whose power

  712. is made perfect

  713. in weakness

  714. and who's made known

  715. to us

  716. in the breaking

  717. of the bread

  718. and in the proclamation

  719. of the cross?

  720. how quickly we forget.

  721. How quickly we forget.

  722. Time would fail

  723. to tell us

  724. of great awakenings

  725. and revivals

  726. and movements

  727. of the Spirit

  728. that God has done again

  729. and again

  730. and again

  731. and yet how quickly

  732. we forget.

  733. do we not remember

  734. who we are

  735. with?

  736. The Savior

  737. of the whole world.

  738. And so Jesus

  739. is asking us again

  740. how many loaves

  741. do you have?

  742. Show me

  743. what little you have.

  744. Give me

  745. all your weakness,

  746. all your failures,

  747. all your fears

  748. and doubts.

  749. Surrender it all

  750. to me

  751. and then

  752. like those loaves

  753. I'm going to bless you

  754. and break you

  755. and send you out.

  756. And then you'll see

  757. in the words of Zechariah

  758. that it's not by might

  759. and it's not by power

  760. but by my Spirit

  761. says the Lord of hosts.

  762. And then that verse

  763. from Isaiah

  764. that spoke first and foremost

  765. about the ministry

  766. of the Messiah

  767. now it will become

  768. true of you as well

  769. just like it became

  770. true of the disciples

  771. in Mark 8.

  772. I will make you

  773. as a light

  774. for the nations

  775. that my salvation

  776. may reach

  777. to the ends

  778. of the earth.

  779. And if you think

  780. that's a stretch

  781. in applying that verse

  782. that way

  783. the Apostle Paul

  784. does the exact same thing

  785. in Acts 13.

  786. That he sees

  787. that in and through

  788. the church

  789. we're extending

  790. the mission of Jesus

  791. to be a light

  792. to the nations.

  793. Are we forgetful?

  794. Yes.

  795. We must confess

  796. that too often

  797. we are.

  798. We are forgetful

  799. but the Lord

  800. never forgets.

  801. The Savior

  802. of the whole world

  803. will not forget

  804. his promise

  805. or his word

  806. and he will not

  807. forget his people.

  808. For as the Lord

  809. said to Paul

  810. in Corinth

  811. so he says to us

  812. today

  813. I have many

  814. in this city

  815. who are my people.

  816. And so as we look

  817. at the crowds

  818. in this seemingly

  819. desolate place

  820. friends let us

  821. remember who we are with.

  822. The Savior

  823. of the whole world

  824. the crucified

  825. and risen Lord Jesus

  826. and let's pray

  827. that what was true

  828. that day

  829. in the Decapolis

  830. might be true

  831. in ours too.

  832. That they all ate

  833. and were satisfied.

  834. Let's pray.

  835. Let's pray.

  836. Our Lord Jesus

  837. we pray

  838. that by your Holy Spirit

  839. you would come

  840. and you would encourage us

  841. with this text.

  842. Lord for those

  843. who feel like

  844. they are far off

  845. would they be encouraged

  846. by your compassion

  847. and your love

  848. to draw near.

  849. Holy Spirit

  850. for those of us

  851. who are feeling

  852. weary

  853. and weak

  854. and battered down

  855. by the battle

  856. Lord would we remember

  857. who we are with.

  858. The mighty one

  859. who can feed crowds

  860. and who can bring

  861. renewal

  862. and who can bring

  863. deep and lasting change.

  864. Lord Jesus

  865. we pray

  866. that you would be known

  867. in our midst

  868. as the Savior

  869. and as the Lord

  870. and we pray

  871. that many would come

  872. to taste and see

  873. that you Lord

  874. are good.

  875. We pray this

  876. in your holy

  877. and mighty name.

  878. Amen.

  879. Amen.

  880. Amen.

  881. Amen.

  882. Amen.

  883. Amen.

  884. Amen.

  885. Amen.

  886. Amen.

  887. Amen.

  888. Amen.
