  1. Well, good morning.

  2. In a complete departure from our normal practice,

  3. I'm simply going to shout out that the Princeton Tigers won

  4. their second round NCAA tournament game last night,

  5. which has not happened since 1967.

  6. So if you don't know, that's my alma mater.

  7. So, and being up here, we have loved our brothers and sisters from Yale

  8. and pray that you will rejoice with us in this moment.

  9. So, okay.

  10. As I take out my glasses, I have a confession to make.

  11. When I started preaching here 10 years ago,

  12. I printed out my sermons in 12-point font.

  13. They now are printed out in 14- or 16-point font,

  14. depending on the day.

  15. I can now only read meaningfully with glasses.

  16. I can't see the words otherwise.

  17. They are just blurs unless I, you know,

  18. do what my father used to do,

  19. hold the newspaper way back there so he can, yeah.

  20. So, I know that not being able to see clearly

  21. as something that has come upon me later in life.

  22. For some of you, it's been a lifelong condition.

  23. For some of you, vision impairment has deeply impacted your life.

  24. And some of you who cannot see are no longer able to use your eyes

  25. to see the world around you.

  26. I did some research this week.

  27. According to the World Health Organization,

  28. 2.2 billion people in the world suffer from some kind of vision impairment.

  29. And it is a tragedy that over a billion of them

  30. do not have the resources for those things to be addressed well.

  31. Thankfully, they're working to make changes in that.

  32. But when we come to the Bible,

  33. the Bible talks of a more widespread problem

  34. than physical blindness as significant as it is.

  35. And that is the problem of spiritual blindness.

  36. The blindness where we cannot,

  37. we do not,

  38. see God rightly.

  39. And the Bible tells us that this is an affliction

  40. that all of us,

  41. apart from his grace,

  42. are afflicted by.

  43. There may be many things,

  44. ways that this expresses itself in our hearts.

  45. We may be confused by the different ideas of God in the world

  46. and not know what is true or right.

  47. We may see God through the lens of our own experience

  48. and only be able to accept him

  49. in the ways that he is understandable to us.

  50. We may be ruled by our hopes and fears

  51. of who God might be or could be

  52. or the expectations that we have of him.

  53. And sometimes we pridefully say

  54. that God must be this or that for us,

  55. for us to see him as well, at all.

  56. Our passage this morning,

  57. as we continue in our series in the Gospel of Mark,

  58. addresses this very topic of spiritual blindness.

  59. And as we look at it together,

  60. we will not only see this blindness exposed,

  61. but we will see Jesus meet us in the midst of it.

  62. So, this is where we're going this morning.

  63. Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  64. It's page 792 in your Pew Bible.

  65. If you'd like to look along with me,

  66. I encourage you.

  67. We're going to go ahead and read this passage together.

  68. We're going to pray for God's help,

  69. and then we will look at it together

  70. for a few minutes this morning.

  71. So, Mark 8, starting in verse 11.

  72. The Pharisees came and began to argue with him,

  73. him being Jesus,

  74. seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.

  75. And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said,

  76. Why does this generation seek a sign?

  77. Truly, I say to you,

  78. no sign will be given to this generation.

  79. And he left them.

  80. He got into the boat again

  81. and went to the other side.

  82. Now, they, that is the disciples,

  83. had forgotten to bring bread,

  84. and they only had one loaf with them in the boat.

  85. And he cautioned them, saying,

  86. Watch out, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees

  87. and the leaven of Herod.

  88. And they began discussing with one another

  89. the fact that they had no bread.

  90. And Jesus, aware of this, said to them,

  91. Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread?

  92. Do you not yet perceive or understand?

  93. Are your hearts hardened?

  94. Having eyes do you not see?

  95. And having ears do you not hear?

  96. And do you not remember?

  97. When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000,

  98. how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?

  99. And they said to him,

  100. Twelve.

  101. And the seven for the 4,000,

  102. how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?

  103. And they said to him,

  104. Seven.

  105. And he said to them,

  106. Do you not yet understand?

  107. And they came to Bethsaida,

  108. and some people brought to him a blind man

  109. and begged him to touch him.

  110. And he took the blind man by the hand

  111. and led him out of the village.

  112. And when he had spit on his eyes

  113. and laid his eyes on him,

  114. he asked him,

  115. Do you see anything?

  116. And he looked up and said,

  117. I see men,

  118. but they look like trees walking.

  119. Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again,

  120. and he opened his eyes,

  121. his sight was restored,

  122. and he saw everything clearly.

  123. And he sent him to his home,

  124. saying,

  125. Do not even enter the village.

  126. Friends, this is God's word.

  127. Let's pray together.

  128. Oh, Lord Jesus,

  129. we do ask for your help this morning.

  130. Lord, for we confess to you our weakness.

  131. Lord, that we do not see you as we ought.

  132. God, we pray that you would open our eyes

  133. to see you in the scripture,

  134. to see you as you have been revealed

  135. in your word.

  136. Lord, to see you in your glory

  137. and majesty and power

  138. and your grace and truth.

  139. Jesus, may you be lifted up

  140. in our midst this morning

  141. through the proclamation of your word.

  142. And may we see you

  143. and respond in worship.

  144. Lord, be my help this morning,

  145. I pray in Jesus' name.

  146. Amen.

  147. What I think we will see

  148. in this passage this morning

  149. is this,

  150. that Jesus confronts us

  151. in our spiritual blindness

  152. and comes to restore

  153. our spiritual vision.

  154. So let's look at it together.

  155. Jesus confronts us

  156. in our spiritual blindness.

  157. This is what we see

  158. in the first two parts

  159. of this story

  160. in verses 11 through 21.

  161. And we'll look at them

  162. in sequence.

  163. The first part of the passage,

  164. verses 11 through 13,

  165. is Jesus confronting

  166. the Pharisees.

  167. And the Pharisees

  168. have a spiritual blindness

  169. that is characterized

  170. by a rebellious challenge

  171. to the person of Jesus.

  172. Look at me at verse 11

  173. and you'll see this so clearly.

  174. They came,

  175. they began to argue with him.

  176. They came to test him.

  177. They came to dispute with him.

  178. They did not come to him

  179. to learn,

  180. to understand,

  181. or to hear from him,

  182. but to challenge him

  183. and to contradict him.

  184. They asked for a sign

  185. and you might be thinking

  186. like we might,

  187. that they've got,

  188. you've got to be kidding me.

  189. This is chapter 8 of Mark

    Isaiah 8 chapter mention

  190. and what have we seen

  191. in the first seven chapters of Mark?

  192. Jesus over and over again

  193. doing miracles,

  194. casting out demons,

  195. healing people,

  196. providing bread

  197. when people were hungry,

  198. walking on waters.

  199. What kind of a sign

  200. do you think

  201. they were looking for?

  202. But in fact,

  203. it may be that

  204. they were looking

  205. for a particular kind of sign

  206. because in the Old Testament

  207. it talks about

  208. how prophets

  209. were to be verified

  210. by a particular kind of sign

  211. and in the rabbinic tradition

  212. this sign became

  213. something like

  214. moving the stars,

  215. something so obvious,

  216. so great

  217. that it was undeniable

  218. that anyone who saw it

  219. would be compelled

  220. to believe.

  221. a sign that would overcome

  222. all of their skepticism

  223. and they asked him this

  224. to test him

  225. which means

  226. they didn't really think

  227. he could do it.

  228. They didn't come saying,

  229. hey, Jesus,

  230. if you could just show us this,

  231. we'd really want to believe in you.

  232. They came to him saying,

  233. sure, go ahead.

  234. Show us what you can do.

  235. Reminds me of,

  236. forgive me

  237. because I refer to this a lot,

  238. the musical

  239. Jesus Christ Superstar

  240. caveat,

  241. it is not a faithful portrayal

  242. of Jesus.

  243. It is, however,

  244. a fascinating look

  245. into how

  246. one might see Jesus

  247. through the lens

  248. of different people

  249. apart from the truth

  250. that Jesus is God.

  251. And so you see

  252. near the end of it,

  253. Jesus is brought

  254. before Herod

  255. and it's a great scene

  256. because Herod

  257. has this great swimming pool,

  258. he has like dancing girls

  259. and palm fronds,

  260. it's really a scene

  261. and so he sings

  262. this song,

  263. right?

  264. Jesus,

  265. I am overjoyed

  266. to meet you face to face.

  267. You've been getting

  268. quite a name

  269. all around the place,

  270. healing cripples,

  271. raising from the dead

  272. and now I understand

  273. you're God,

  274. at least that's what

  275. you've said.

  276. Prove to,

  277. so you are the Christ,

  278. you're the great

  279. Jesus Christ,

  280. prove to me

  281. that you're no fool,

  282. walk across my swimming pool.

  283. If you do that for me,

  284. then I'll let you go free.

  285. Come on,

  286. King of the Jews.

  287. This is the spirit

  288. of skepticism,

  289. of doubt

  290. that we see

  291. in these Pharisees

  292. as they came.

  293. But friends,

  294. the kingdom of God

  295. does not work like this.

  296. Fascinatingly,

  297. in the parallel passage

  298. in Matthew,

  299. Jesus says more

  300. to the Pharisees

  301. when he rebukes

  302. their questioning,

  303. when he sighs

  304. at their response,

  305. discouraged

  306. by their unbelief.

  307. Matthew says,

  308. you know,

  309. the only sign

  310. given to this generation

  311. will actually be

  312. the sign of Jonah,

  313. the one who went

  314. into the belly

  315. of the whale

  316. for three days

  317. and then came out again.

  318. And of this,

  319. he was speaking

  320. of his death

  321. and his resurrection.

  322. The only sign

  323. that Jesus will give

  324. is this historical fact

  325. that this man

  326. who walked the earth

  327. died,

  328. was buried,

  329. and then rose again

  330. and appeared

  331. to many.

  332. But recognize

  333. that even that sign,

  334. even the greatest sign,

  335. does not compel belief.

  336. Because the kingdom

  337. of God

  338. does not come

  339. with such power

  340. that it would say,

  341. you must believe this

  342. or you are just stupid.

  343. Right?

  344. The gospel comes,

  345. the kingdom of God

  346. comes to this world

  347. and God gives us

  348. many, many reasons

  349. for us to believe.

  350. But it is not such

  351. that it is intellectually

  352. so compelling

  353. that all people

  354. will resist it

  355. or that all people

  356. will believe it.

  357. the kingdom of God

  358. comes on its own terms

  359. and gives its own evidence.

  360. And so often,

  361. like the Pharisees here,

  362. we set up our own terms

  363. and our own,

  364. we like,

  365. as C.S. Lewis says,

  366. we put God on trial

  367. and say,

  368. prove to me

  369. according to my standards

  370. of evidence

  371. that you are

  372. who you say you are.

  373. Jesus comes

  374. to call people

  375. to belief

  376. and faith,

  377. not irrational faith

  378. that has no basis

  379. nor is it purely

  380. rational faith

  381. that everyone

  382. who is normal thinking

  383. and logical

  384. would have to believe

  385. but a reasoned belief

  386. that involves

  387. trust

  388. and surrender.

  389. And so Jesus challenges

  390. the Pharisees.

  391. His deep sigh

  392. and his rejection

  393. of their challenge

  394. shows that he

  395. confronts

  396. their spiritual blindness.

  397. and in the end

  398. he departs

  399. without responding

  400. more to them.

  401. Friends,

  402. I wonder how much

  403. we are like the Pharisees

  404. in our own hearts.

  405. I wonder how much

  406. we think that Jesus

  407. must answer

  408. our questions

  409. and must meet

  410. our standards

  411. for us to believe

  412. and trust in him.

  413. I wonder if we put him

  414. on experiential trial.

  415. Jesus,

  416. I'll believe in you

  417. if you'll do

  418. what I want

  419. in this circumstance

  420. in the timing

  421. that I want you

  422. to respond

  423. to this.

  424. Do we bring conditions

  425. to believing in Jesus?

  426. Jesus,

  427. I'll believe in you

  428. if you

  429. give me this job,

  430. preserve this relationship,

  431. relationship,

  432. heal this sickness?

  433. Do we put Jesus

  434. to the test

  435. in our hearts

  436. saying,

  437. if you do this,

  438. Jesus,

  439. then I will believe

  440. in you.

  441. Friends,

  442. we ought not

  443. to be unthinking,

  444. but let us

  445. not be those

  446. whose hearts doubt

  447. and are full

  448. of skepticism

  449. and test the Lord

  450. over and over again.

  451. Jesus then turns

  452. from those

  453. outside of his circle,

  454. the Pharisees

  455. and the Herodians,

  456. to those

  457. inside his circle

  458. in the next part

  459. of this story.

  460. Verses 14 and following,

  461. 14 to 21,

  462. Jesus sets up

  463. a contrast

  464. between

  465. what Jesus

  466. is talking about

  467. and what the disciples

  468. are talking about.

  469. So now he's talking

  470. to his own people,

  471. right?

  472. And they get in the boat

  473. and Mark sets up

  474. this contrast.

  475. He says,

  476. they got into the boat

  477. and they didn't have

  478. anything to eat.

  479. They had no bread.

  480. And Jesus turns

  481. to them and says,

  482. I want to warn you

  483. about the leaven

  484. of the Pharisees.

  485. Now, leaven

  486. is not the same thing

  487. as yeast,

  488. but it's similar.

  489. Leaven would have been

  490. a portion

  491. of last week's

  492. bread dough

  493. that had yeast

  494. in it

  495. that would be preserved

  496. and then mixed in

  497. with new dough

  498. to give it,

  499. I'm sure someone's

  500. a baker here

  501. could explain this

  502. far better than I could,

  503. to affect it

  504. so that it would

  505. then rise and grow

  506. just like,

  507. in the same way

  508. that we use yeast

  509. nowadays, right?

  510. It becomes activated.

  511. Anyway,

  512. this is how it works.

  513. So Jesus said,

  514. beware

  515. that the unbelief

  516. and the skepticism

  517. of the Pharisees

  518. and Herod

  519. is like a leaven.

  520. It's going to work

  521. its way in

  522. and it's going

  523. to corrupt you

  524. like a mold

  525. or like a spiritual cancer

  526. getting into our lives,

  527. spreading unbelief

  528. and rebellious

  529. testing spirits.

  530. So Jesus says

  531. to his disciples,

  532. be careful

  533. of this attitude.

  534. Look out for this.

  535. And the disciples

  536. completely missed

  537. Jesus' point.

  538. Jesus mentioned leaven.

  539. They think leaven

  540. is what you do

  541. to make bread.

  542. We don't have any bread.

  543. Oh no,

  544. we don't have any bread.

  545. I'm hungry.

  546. What did we do?

  547. They probably started

  548. pointing figures

  549. at one another

  550. knowing the disciples.

  551. John,

  552. why didn't you bring the bread?

  553. I thought you were

  554. going to bring the bread.

  555. Right?

  556. And so this is what

  557. then Jesus does,

  558. responds in verse 17 to

  559. when he says,

  560. what are you doing?

  561. specifically,

  562. why are you discussing

  563. the fact that you

  564. have no bread?

  565. He asked him a series

  566. of questions.

  567. Some of them are rhetorical.

  568. Some of them,

  569. all of them are poignant.

  570. Why are you discussing

  571. the fact that you

  572. have no bread?

  573. That was not what

  574. I was talking about at all.

  575. I was talking about

  576. the spiritual condition

  577. of your heart.

  578. Do you not yet perceive

  579. or understand?

  580. Are your hearts hardened?

  581. Having eyes,

  582. do you not see?

  583. And having ears,

  584. do you not hear?

  585. Don't you remember

  586. what I've done?

  587. When there were

  588. 5,000 people

  589. who didn't have bread,

  590. what did I do?

  591. I provided bread.

  592. When there were

  593. 4,000 people,

  594. what did I do?

  595. I provided bread.

  596. Do you not yet understand?

  597. Do you not yet understand

  598. who I am?

  599. Notice the weave

  600. that Jesus brings together

  601. as he's confronting

  602. the spiritual blindness

  603. of the disciples.

  604. He says,

  605. you're distracted

  606. by practical needs.

  607. Your hearts are hardened.

  608. And what you can't,

  609. what you're missing

  610. in all of this

  611. is that you are not

  612. looking at me

  613. and seeing me

  614. for who I really am.

  615. If you remembered

  616. who I was,

  617. if you saw who I was,

  618. you wouldn't,

  619. one,

  620. worry about physical bread

  621. because you fed mobs,

  622. you could feed the 12 of us,

  623. but two,

  624. know that

  625. you're about something

  626. much greater

  627. than just physical food.

  628. You're about spiritual life.

  629. Jesus says,

  630. you don't understand

  631. what I've come to do.

  632. And in these phrases,

  633. he's almost surely

  634. picking up

  635. on a concept

  636. that we see

  637. over and over again

  638. in the Old Testament.

  639. James read

  640. from Hebrews earlier

  641. where the writer

  642. of Hebrews

  643. refers to

  644. the nation of Israel

  645. as they're leaving Egypt

  646. in the Exodus

  647. and God does

  648. miraculous signs

  649. and wonders

  650. to provide for them,

  651. to protect them,

  652. and to deliver them.

  653. And yet they get

  654. into the wilderness

  655. and what do they do?

  656. They grumble,

  657. they complain,

  658. they test God.

  659. Years later,

  660. after God brings

  661. his people

  662. into the promised land

  663. as they dwell

  664. in the promised land,

  665. as God provides

  666. for them

  667. and protects them,

  668. and then the people

  669. turn their hearts

  670. away from him.

  671. Jeremiah

  672. preaches near the end

  673. of the northern kingdom

  674. and to the southern kingdom

  675. in its weakness.

  676. Jeremiah 5, 21 and following,

  677. he says this,

  678. hear this,

  679. O foolish and senseless people

  680. who have eyes

  681. but see not,

  682. who have ears

  683. but hear not.

  684. Do you not fear me,

  685. declares the Lord?

  686. Do you not tremble

  687. before me?

  688. I placed the sand

  689. as a boundary

  690. for the sea,

  691. a perpetual barrier

  692. that it cannot pass.

  693. Though the waves toss,

  694. they cannot prevail.

  695. Though they roar,

  696. they cannot pass over it.

  697. But this people

  698. has a stubborn

  699. and rebellious heart.

  700. They have turned aside

  701. and gone away.

  702. They do not say

  703. in their hearts,

  704. let us fear the Lord our God

  705. who gives the rain

  706. in its season,

  707. the autumn rain

  708. and the spring rain,

  709. and keeps for us

  710. the weeks appointed

  711. for the harvest.

  712. Your iniquities

  713. have turned these away

  714. and your sins

  715. have kept good

  716. from you.

  717. When you look

  718. at the broader context

  719. of what Jeremiah

  720. is bringing

  721. as a charge

  722. against the people

  723. of God

  724. who are not

  725. seeing God clearly,

  726. one of the things

  727. you see is that

  728. they had two things

  729. that they were

  730. regularly turning

  731. away from God

  732. to deal with

  733. their practical things.

  734. When they were

  735. threatened politically,

  736. they would turn

  737. to military alliances

  738. rather than trusting

  739. in the Lord.

  740. And when they were

  741. looking for provision

  742. rather than looking

  743. to God,

  744. they turned

  745. to the local gods

  746. who are a bit

  747. like slot machines.

  748. You put in your prayer,

  749. you get the harvest.

  750. You put in the prayer,

  751. you get a baby.

  752. You put in the prayer,

  753. you get rain

  754. when you need it.

  755. And rather than

  756. seeing God clearly

  757. and trusting him,

  758. they turned

  759. and met these

  760. practical needs

  761. in a different way.

  762. And I think

  763. this is why

  764. Jesus reminds them,

  765. don't be like

  766. these generations.

  767. Don't you see

  768. what I've done?

  769. I've fed

  770. 5,000 people.

  771. I've fed

  772. 4,000 people.

  773. This is pure speculation,

  774. but I'm just going

  775. to throw it out there.

  776. Why 12

  777. and why 7?

  778. I don't think

  779. we ever addressed it.

  780. Maybe because

  781. the feeding

  782. of the 5,000

  783. was to meet

  784. the tribes of Israel,

  785. 12 symbolizing that,

  786. and then the 7

  787. is expanding it

  788. to all of creation.

  789. This is consistent

  790. with what we said

  791. about why Jesus,

  792. say God is going

  793. to provide

  794. for everyone

  795. in every need

  796. and every condition.

  797. and in the midst

  798. of it,

  799. the disciples

  800. don't see them.

  801. They're distracted

  802. by their physical,

  803. practical needs,

  804. and rather than

  805. turning to him

  806. in faith,

  807. they turn away.

  808. Friends,

  809. I wonder how much

  810. we are like that

  811. as well.

  812. In our personal lives,

  813. do we pursue

  814. the praise

  815. of this world,

  816. the achievement

  817. or the satisfaction

  818. that we get

  819. in the pleasures

  820. of this world

  821. more than Jesus

  822. and his kingdom?

  823. In our spiritual lives,

  824. do we fall

  825. into the danger

  826. of loving,

  827. measurable success

  828. over faithfulness

  829. in the long run?

  830. In our emotional lives,

  831. do we trust more

  832. in techniques

  833. than we do

  834. in the grace

  835. of Jesus?

  836. In our political lives,

  837. do we choose

  838. the tools of power

  839. over the gospel

  840. of grace?

  841. In our social engagement,

  842. do we trust

  843. in social engineering

  844. over prayer

  845. and mercy?

  846. Now look,

  847. friends,

  848. I set these things up

  849. as dichotomies.

  850. They aren't dichotomies.

  851. All of them,

  852. there is common grace

  853. good in all of the things

  854. that I mentioned,

  855. but at its heart,

  856. what are we trusting in?

  857. What are we looking at?

  858. What are we really thinking

  859. makes the difference?

  860. Do we think

  861. it's these things

  862. or do we think

  863. it's the grace of God

  864. shown in the person

  865. of Jesus?

  866. Because that is what

  867. Jesus wants

  868. the disciples to see.

  869. That is what

  870. Jesus wants us

  871. to see.

  872. He calls us

  873. that our trust

  874. would be truly

  875. and ultimately

  876. in Him.

  877. Because this is

  878. what Mark

  879. is pointing to.

  880. Mark puts

  881. these stories together.

  882. Look,

  883. the gospels

  884. are historical.

  885. They record events.

  886. But if you read them,

  887. it's not rocket science

  888. to see that they've

  889. arranged the stories

  890. at times

  891. in thematic ways.

  892. And I believe

  893. that this is what

  894. has happened here.

  895. because we go

  896. from this

  897. spiritual blindness

  898. to Jesus

  899. healing a blind man.

  900. Jesus and His kingdom

  901. come

  902. to restore

  903. our spiritual vision.

  904. And this is what

  905. we see in the last part

  906. of our passage

  907. this morning.

  908. 22 through 26.

  909. It's a remarkable story.

  910. Jesus comes,

  911. they bring Him

  912. a blind man

  913. and His sight

  914. is restored.

  915. I'm not going

  916. to spend a lot

  917. of time

  918. repacking this

  919. because

  920. I would say

  921. very similar things

  922. to what Tom preached

  923. two weeks ago

  924. about Jesus

  925. healing the deaf man.

  926. Why does He touch him?

  927. Why does He do it

  928. in this particular way?

  929. One of the big questions

  930. in this is

  931. why is it a two-step process?

  932. Why does He touch him

  933. and then say,

  934. what do you see?

  935. And then He says,

  936. well, I see people

  937. but they look like trees.

  938. And Jesus touches him again.

  939. And then

  940. you see the fullness

  941. of it in verse 25.

  942. Look with it.

  943. Look with me at it, right?

  944. Jesus laid His hands

  945. on His eyes again

  946. and He opened His eyes

  947. and His sight was restored

  948. and He saw everything clearly.

  949. And it's most likely

  950. this man was not born blind

  951. because he wouldn't have known

  952. what a tree looked like.

  953. So He was actually

  954. being restored to sight

  955. having become blind

  956. for some reason.

  957. Why does Jesus do it

  958. in a two-step process?

  959. Well, there's a lot

  960. of interesting speculation

  961. in the commentaries about this.

  962. But I think that the one

  963. that best explains to me

  964. is that Jesus is simply saying

  965. that even coming to full vision

  966. is a process.

  967. That there is a progressive healing.

  968. At times Jesus provides it

  969. all at once.

  970. But at times He leads people

  971. in a progression of healing.

  972. And that it's meant

  973. to give hope to the disciples.

  974. Even though I've just rebuked you

  975. as being a blind person,

  976. there is still hope for you.

  977. Your sight can be restored

  978. just like this man's sight

  979. can be restored.

  980. For Jesus comes

  981. as the one that the prophet Isaiah

  982. points to in Isaiah 42.6.

  983. God says this of Jesus,

  984. I will give you

  985. as a covenant for the people,

  986. a light for the nations

  987. to open the eyes

  988. that are blind

  989. to bring out

  990. the prisoners

  991. from the dungeon,

  992. from the prison,

  993. those who sit in darkness.

  994. I am the Lord

  995. and that is my name.

  996. My glory I give

  997. to no other

  998. nor my praise

  999. to carved idols.

  1000. Behold,

  1001. the former things

  1002. have come to pass

  1003. and new things

  1004. I now declare.

  1005. Before they spring forth,

1006. I tell you of them.

1007. And Isaiah was looking ahead

  1008. from 600 A.D.

  1009. or B.C.

  1010. about looking ahead

1011. to the coming of Jesus

  1012. and saying,

  1013. this one will come

  1014. and he will fulfill

  1015. all of these promises.

  1016. He will come

  1017. to restore

  1018. our spiritual blindness.

  1019. And friends,

  1020. this is the testimony

  1021. of the church

  1022. throughout the ages,

  1023. is it not?

  1024. When Jesus comes,

  1025. he opens our eyes

  1026. to see him.

  1027. He opens our eyes

  1028. to see the reality

  1029. of our sin

  1030. and our need

  1031. for forgiveness

  1032. and our inability

1033. to do that on our own.

  1034. He comes

  1035. and he shows us

1036. that he is the one

  1037. who is able

  1038. to forgive us

  1039. and to deliver us

  1040. and to save us.

  1041. This is my story.

  1042. I grew up

  1043. going to church,

  1044. hearing of Jesus,

  1045. reading the Bible passages,

  1046. but it never made

  1047. any sense to me.

  1048. It had no meaning

  1049. to me personally.

  1050. I couldn't see

1051. what the big deal was.

1052. And then in God's grace,

  1053. he brought people

  1054. into my life.

  1055. He brought the writings

  1056. of C.S. Lewis

  1057. and as I,

  1058. as these things

  1059. came together,

  1060. God graciously worked

1061. and my eyes were open

  1062. and I saw Jesus

  1063. for the first time.

1064. And I can remember back

1065. to the summer of 1986

1066. in those couple of weeks

1067. where I saw him clearly

  1068. and I understood

  1069. who he was

1070. and what he had come for

  1071. and I knew I had a choice.

1072. I could harden my heart

1073. and turn away from him

1074. and do it on my own

1075. or I could bow my knee

  1076. and believe

  1077. and become a follower

  1078. of Jesus.

  1079. So John Newton

  1080. in his famous song

  1081. about amazing grace says,

  1082. I once was lost,

  1083. but now am found.

  1084. Was blind,

  1085. but now I see.

  1086. Friends,

1087. this is the good news

  1088. of the gospel

1089. that though we are afflicted

  1090. by spiritual blindness

  1091. and though we,

1092. even though we would want

  1093. to see Jesus,

1094. we struggle to see him,

  1095. yet he has come

1096. to meet us in this

  1097. to heal us

  1098. of our spiritual blindness

1099. and to restore our vision.

  1100. First Corinthians,

  1101. Paul tells us

  1102. that though we see

1103. through a glass dimly now,

1104. one day we will see him.

1105. One day we will see him

1106. in all of his glory

1107. and all of his splendor

1108. and all of his majesty.

1109. we will see him face to face

  1110. and we will have

  1111. no more questions.

1112. We will just be filled with joy

1113. and we will bow down

  1114. and worship.

1115. This is what he calls us to now,

  1116. to turn towards him

  1117. with that hope

1118. that that day could be ours.

  1119. Let's pray together.

1120. Lord, we pray this morning

1121. that you would open our eyes

  1122. to see you.

  1123. Come and help us.

1124. Lord, for we confess to you

  1125. that our hearts

  1126. are often hardened

  1127. and Lord,

  1128. often we hold on

  1129. to things so tightly

1130. that we make them conditions

1131. on how we would come to you

1132. and when we would believe in you.

1133. God, I pray that you would

1134. humble us before your greatness.

1135. show us our desperate need

  1136. for you, Lord,

  1137. to open our eyes

1138. so that we can see you.

1139. God, I pray for us

1140. because we are so often

  1141. distracted.

  1142. Distracted from seeing you

  1143. as you truly are.

1144. Lord, how often our eyes

1145. are set on other things

  1146. for our present day

  1147. well-being.

1148. Lord, for our salvation even.

1149. Lord, help us to see

1150. that it is in you

  1151. and you alone

1152. that we find these things.

1153. Lord, for you are God

  1154. who restores sight

  1155. to the blind

1156. so that we might see you

  1157. and worship you.

1158. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  1159. Amen.

  1160. Amen.

  1161. Amen.

  1162. Amen.

  1163. Amen.

  1164. Amen.

  1165. Amen.

  1166. Amen.

  1167. Amen.

  1168. Amen.

  1169. Amen.

  1170. Amen.

  1171. Amen.

  1172. Amen.

  1173. Amen.

  1174. Amen.

  1175. Amen.

  1176. Amen.
