  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see you all here. We're glad you have joined us this morning on this

  2. Palm Sunday. You know, on that first Palm Sunday that happened, there was a victory parade. Jesus

  3. came in humility on a donkey, but the crowds looked at him and they said, our king has come.

  4. But in their minds, this king had come to overthrow Rome. They were looking for an army,

  5. whether it be a physical army or an army of angels, to overthrow the great oppressor

  6. that they lived under and to establish a new nation state of Israel with its former glory,

  7. its prosperity, its power. They thought that Jesus had come to bring an earthly kingdom

  8. and they misunderstood him deeply.

  9. I wonder, friends, this morning, as we gather, if we are prone to similarly misunderstanding Jesus

  10. in different ways. In our culture today, maybe we misunderstand Jesus as coming to make our lives

  11. easier and better. Jesus is a self-help, a self-advancement program where we connect with

  12. the divine and that brings us a little bit better life than we thought before. Jesus is like an add-on,

  13. a new app in our phone that helps produce a little bit greater spiritual productivity in our lives.

  14. Maybe we think that Jesus has come to give us a manual for self-salvation. That is, if we can be good people,

  15. good enough in the right ways to the right people, that maybe God will accept us because we've met the standard.

  16. If you were a Jew in the first century, you might think, well, if I follow the law, that will be enough.

  17. Certainly, Christians over the centuries have thought that being good moral people and being a part of

  18. attendance at a gathering like this, isn't that enough?

  19. There are lots of ways in which we misunderstand the gospel.

  20. Today, perhaps one of the great challenges is what I'm going to label an over-realized eschatology.

  21. What does that mean? We think that because Jesus has risen from the dead,

  22. he's come here now to fix everything, all of our problems.

  23. This is what the prosperity gospel promises, that Jesus has come to make you healthy, wealthy, and wise

  24. in this life with all of that.

  25. Why is it such a big deal if we misunderstand?

  26. Well, because misunderstanding Jesus can lead to spiritual ruin.

  27. Because when we think that Jesus is promising something that he hasn't promised us,

  28. those false expectations are disappointed,

  29. and that disappointment leads to despair and a crisis of faith.

  30. How can I believe? Because Jesus hasn't come through for me.

  31. How often do we come to Jesus with conditions?

  32. As long as Jesus says, these things for me, my expectations, my standards,

  33. I will believe.

  34. But if not, I don't know anymore.

  35. So the stakes are high in understanding Jesus rightly.

  36. The stakes are high in knowing what he's actually come to do.

  37. And this leads us to our text today.

  38. If you're visiting, we're in a series in the book of Mark.

  39. We'll be looking at Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  40. We'll be looking at verses 34 through 38.

  41. In the Pew Bible, it's page 793.

  42. So you can turn there if you'd like to have that.

  43. And if you remember, as you're turning there,

  44. remember that this is, chapter 8 is sort of the high point,

    Isaiah 8 chapter mention

  45. the apex of the book of Mark.

  46. It is the gravitational center where leading up to it, it is, who is this Jesus?

  47. And then from here on, it's Jesus living out what that calling looks like

  48. and calling his disciples to follow him.

  49. And if you were here last week, you'd remember that the context of verse 34 is,

  50. Jesus has come to the disciples and said, what do people think I am?

  51. And Peter said, you are the Christ.

  52. And then Jesus responded and said, you're right.

  53. And then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer and must die and must rise again.

  54. And Peter said, whoa, whoa, whoa, that's not right.

  55. That doesn't match my understanding of why you've come.

  56. And Jesus rebukes him and says, you are thinking of the things of man, not the things of God.

  57. And that leads us to our text this morning.

  58. So Mark 8, we're going to start in verse 34.

  59. We're going to read through verse 38.

  60. The slides will include chapter 9, verse 1.

  61. Some Bibles put it with this.

  62. I actually think there's a good reason to say it goes with the passage afterwards.

  63. And I'm just not going to deal with it.

  64. Come see me afterwards if you want to know what I think it says.

  65. But Mark 8, verse 34.

    Mark 8:34

  66. And he, that is Jesus, called to him the crowd with his disciples and said to them,

  67. if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

  68. For whoever would save his life will lose it.

  69. But whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it.

  70. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?

  71. For what can a man give in return for his life?

  72. For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation,

  73. of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed

  74. when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

  75. Let's pray and ask God to help us understand this text.

  76. Lord, we do come before you and we thank you.

  77. We thank you that you have not left us to grope and grasp to understand you,

  78. but that you have revealed yourself.

  79. Lord, you've revealed yourself in the person of Jesus

  80. and you've revealed yourself in your word, the Bible.

  81. Your revelation to us so that we might know you.

  82. And Lord, we pray now that you will help us.

  83. Lord, help us to understand what you are saying to us.

  84. Lord, help our minds to grasp the truths.

  85. Help our hearts to treasure them and to submit to them.

  86. Lord, I pray for your help that I might speak clearly this morning.

  87. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  88. Amen.

  89. Amen.

  90. Friends, the big idea of this passage is very simple.

  91. And that is that Jesus calls us to walk the way of the cross.

  92. We're going to look at this in two sections.

  93. Verse 34 is the call to walk the way of the cross.

  94. And verse 35 through 38 is going to tell us about the shape of the way of the cross.

  95. So that's what we're going to do for those of you who are taking notes.

  96. Each of our points will have three sub points.

  97. It'll break down really nicely.

  98. So, and hopefully we'll get through this and it will help bring clarity to us.

  99. So in verse 34, Jesus calls us to walk in the way of the cross.

  100. Because of Peter's rebuke, Jesus recognizes,

  101. I need to clarify with these guys and not just with his disciples,

  102. but more broadly, he calls the crowd to him and says,

  103. I need to clarify what I have actually come to do.

  104. And more importantly for, in this context, it's what it means to follow me.

  105. Right?

  106. Because this is the subject of what he's talking about throughout this.

  107. What does it mean to actually follow Jesus?

  108. And Jesus says, there are three things.

  109. If anyone would come after me, he must first deny himself.

  110. Now friends, this is a very simple, but very profound and difficult thing to do.

  111. To say, it's not about me anymore.

  112. It's about something else outside of me.

  113. I have to deny that I am the center of the world.

  114. I have to deny that I am the most important thing about me or about my life.

  115. To follow Jesus is to say, my life is no longer about me.

  116. And of course, we know that this is how we enter into faith with Jesus, isn't it?

  117. Right?

  118. Recognizing that when we come to faith, what we're doing is recognizing,

  119. I have nothing to commend myself to God.

  120. And my sin is so great that he is right to bring judgment upon me.

  121. And so I am undone.

  122. I have nothing by which I might cross this gulf between myself and a holy God.

  123. And yet that holy God has come and done something for me.

  124. But I need to recognize that the way to get to that thing, that person, Jesus, who has come for me,

  125. is by denying myself, surrendering my right, and clinging to him instead.

  126. One commentator mentioned, noticed that denying oneself is not denying the things that the self wants,

  127. but it is denying the self itself.

  128. Jesus calls for a deliberate refusal to be guided by self-interest,

  129. for a conscious surrender of control of one's life,

  130. for an intentional renunciation of self-determination.

  131. Nothing in my hands I bring, only to the cross I cling.

  132. To deny oneself is to say, my life is no longer my own.

  133. I have surrendered it to Jesus in faith.

  134. Jesus then says, not only are you to deny yourself, but you to pick up the cross.

  135. Now what does this mean?

  136. Fundamentally it means you need to embrace a path of suffering.

  137. Now, in the first century, what picking up the cross meant was,

  138. for those who were condemned to die by this horrific means of execution,

  139. they would be paraded through the streets,

  140. and they would be compelled to carry the crossbar of their cross,

  141. that then they would be nailed to when they were crucified and lifted up,

  142. and then hung there in public shame and humiliation,

  143. as well as unbelievable physical pain.

  144. Right?

  145. This is what happened with Jesus.

  146. He was compelled to carry the cross.

  147. And Jesus says, we too need to recognize that we are called to walk in his footsteps,

  148. a path of suffering, a path of humiliation,

  149. in the eyes of others.

  150. So Jesus says we're to deny ourselves, we're to pick up the cross,

  151. and then we're to follow him.

  152. And here's what I want you to see.

  153. This is, in some ways, the pattern of our salvation

  154. becomes the pattern of our life.

  155. We follow Jesus who died for us by dying to ourselves

  156. so that we might live for him.

  157. And the life that we now live, we spend,

  158. not for ourselves, but for Jesus and for his glory.

  159. This is the call that Jesus puts forth before us today.

  160. So what does it look like?

  161. Well, in some ways, the whole New Testament,

  162. all of the epistles and letters,

  163. and even much of the gospel teachings

  164. is teaching us about what does it look like to live in God's kingdom,

  165. to live this path that Jesus has laid out for us.

  166. But that would be too much for us today.

  167. Thankfully, Jesus gives us three things

  168. for us to think about very carefully

  169. as we think about what's the shape of this discipleship,

  170. this following Jesus that we're called to do.

  171. The way of the cross looks like three things.

  172. It looks like dying to self-protection

  173. and giving your life away.

  174. It means dying to self-gratification

  175. and living for a greater good.

  176. It means dying to self-identity,

  177. to be identified with Christ by faith.

  178. So we're going to look at those three things

  179. for a few minutes as we think about what's the shape.

  180. Verse 35, the way of the cross

  181. means dying to self-protection

  182. and giving your life away for Christ.

  183. Look with me at the verse and see what he says.

  184. Right?

  185. Verse 35,

  186. For whoever would save his life will lose it.

  187. But whoever loses his life for my sake

  188. and the gospel will save it.

  189. Now look, Jesus is using life

  190. in two different senses here.

  191. Right?

  192. Because at one level he's saying

  193. he's using life in the first one.

  194. Whoever would save his life,

  195. whoever would seek to save or preserve

  196. this earthly life,

  197. which means both your physical existence,

  198. but also all the things that you call your life.

  199. Everything that it makes up.

  200. Your hopes, your dreams,

  201. all those things.

  202. Right?

  203. So he's saying,

  204. if you seek to save that,

  205. you'll never succeed.

  206. You will lose that.

  207. But if you surrender your desire to protect,

  208. to save,

  209. to promote that

  210. and make your life about that,

  211. you will actually gain a different life,

  212. an eternal life that comes from me.

  213. And this eternal life is,

  214. both in the present world

  215. and for eternity,

  216. something of greater value

  217. than you will ever know.

  218. But he says,

  219. you have to die to saving your life

  220. so that you might receive the life

  221. that I have for you.

  222. You can't have both.

  223. You must give up one

  224. to gain the other.

  225. And he's saying,

  226. saving your life is futile.

  227. Now look,

  228. let's be very clear.

  229. Jesus is not advocating self-martyrdom,

  230. let alone suicide.

  231. He's not saying,

  232. go kill yourself

  233. so that you can have the life with Jesus.

  234. Right?

  235. But what he is saying is,

  236. let go.

  237. Let go of your grasping,

  238. of your control,

  239. of your protecting,

  240. of this life.

  241. And again,

  242. friends,

  243. see,

  244. this is the pattern of Jesus.

  245. Jesus had to die

  246. so that you could live.

  247. So now,

  248. he says,

  249. die to yourself,

  250. join yourself to me by faith,

  251. and you will live.

  252. You will live for what?

  253. For me,

  254. and for the gospel's sake.

  255. This is the good news,

  256. right?

  257. Whoever loses his life for my sake,

  258. and for the sake of the gospel,

  259. this is something worth living for.

  260. Worth giving up everything else

  261. to spend your energy and your life.

  262. Dietrich Bonhoeffer famously said,

  263. when Christ calls a man,

  264. he bids him come and die.

  265. So Jesus calls us to die

  266. to self-protection

  267. and to live for something else.

  268. Self-protection can take many forms.

  269. We might be obsessed

  270. with our physical life and health,

  271. desperately and fiercely,

  272. protecting it,

  273. promoting it,

  274. in a way that denies God's sovereignty

  275. over our physical strength

  276. and weakness.

  277. Maybe we do it

  278. not with our physical life,

  279. but with the life of our hopes

  280. and our dreams,

  281. in our careers,

  282. in our successes,

  283. in our relationships,

  284. our desire for pleasure

  285. or comfort.

  286. At the center,

  287. we seek to preserve the life

  288. that we are making

  289. rather than allowing God

  290. to give us the life

  291. that he wants to give us.

  292. And Jesus calls us

  293. to do something else.

  294. Jesus says,

  295. don't preserve,

  296. but give your life away.

  297. Let the cause of the gospel

  298. be the cause of your life.

  299. The apostle Paul

  300. talks about himself

  301. and his life

  302. as being poured out

  303. like a drink offering,

  304. simply given away

  305. before God

  306. for the sake of other people.

  307. friends,

  308. in this Easter season,

  309. think about it.

  310. Who are the people

  311. that God has put

  312. in your life?

  313. Your family,

  314. your coworkers,

  315. your suite mates,

  316. your friends,

  317. your neighbors.

  318. What would it mean

  319. for you

  320. to love them

  321. the way Jesus

  322. has loved you?

  323. what would it cost you

  324. in your time,

  325. in your convenience,

  326. in your physical belongings,

  327. in your comfort zones,

  328. to love the people

  329. around you?

  330. Pouring out your life

  331. for others

  332. is what Jesus did

  333. for us.

  334. All that I have

  335. and all that I am

  336. is completely

  337. given over to Jesus.

  338. No halfway,

  339. no one foot in,

  340. one foot out.

  341. Either we save our life

  342. or we lose it.

  343. You may be familiar

  344. with the missionary

  345. Jim Elliott

  346. who in the 1950s

  347. was martyred.

  348. He wrote in his life

  349. that he is no fool

  350. who gives

  351. what he cannot keep

  352. to gain

  353. what he cannot lose

  354. and he lived out

  355. that calling

  356. by going to

  357. an unreached tribe

  358. in South America

  359. who were known

  360. to be headhunters

  361. and he died

  362. at their hands.

  363. Not only was his faith

  364. exemplary

  365. but his wife's faith.

  366. She who sat back

  367. at the radio

  368. and heard of his,

  369. heard of her husband's death

  370. and then

  371. after regrouping

  372. went back

  373. to the same people

  374. to love them.

  375. To raise her daughter

  376. as a single parent missionary

  377. so that they,

  378. these people

  379. who had done

  380. unspeakable harm

  381. to her family

  382. would know

  383. the grace

  384. and love of Christ.

  385. Friends,

  386. if Jesus would ask you

  387. to give up something

  388. to follow him,

  389. would you do it?

  390. Would you do it gladly?

  391. Can you think

  392. of that one thing

  393. that your hand

  394. is so grasped to

  395. that you're like

  396. the monkey in the jar

  397. you won't let go of it

  398. to get your hand out?

  399. Jesus says

  400. you must

  401. lose your life

  402. in order to save it.

  403. But he goes on.

  404. He says

  405. the way of the cross

  406. is more

  407. than just thinking

  408. about our life.

  409. Verse 36 and 37

  410. it's the way

  411. of the cross

  412. means dying

  413. to self-gratification

  414. and living

  415. for a greater good

  416. in Jesus.

  417. Jesus uses

  418. these rhetorical,

  419. he turns from life

  420. to our good,

  421. the things

  422. that we value

  423. and esteem.

  424. And he asks

  425. these two rhetorical questions.

  426. What does it profit one

  427. if they gain

  428. the whole world

  429. and they lose their soul?

  430. And because

  431. it's a rhetorical question

  432. we should know

  433. the answer.

  434. The answer is

  435. what does it gain?

  436. Nothing.

  437. We get nothing

  438. if we have

  439. the whole world

  440. all the riches

  441. all the power

  442. all the success

  443. all the accolades

  444. all the comfort.

  445. If we have anything

  446. that we could dream of

  447. and we lose our soul

  448. what value

  449. does it have?

  450. Nothing.

  451. And he asks

  452. a similar question.

  453. What can one give

  454. in return for the soul?

  455. Nothing

  456. because the soul

  457. the part of us

  458. that is meant

  459. to commune

  460. with the eternal God

  461. our creator

  462. forever.

  463. I'm not going to get

  464. into all the anthropology

  465. about soul

  466. and spirit

  467. and body

  468. and how that all

  469. fits together

  470. but Jesus uses this word

  471. and my translation

  472. used life

  473. right

  474. to save your life

  475. here

  476. right

  477. there is nothing.

  478. Now look friends

  479. we need to be honest

  480. with one another.

  481. the world that we live in

  482. has a lot of allure

  483. and it promises

  484. a lot of goodness.

  485. In our physical life

  486. there is sex

  487. and gluttony

  488. and adrenaline highs

  489. and comfort

  490. beyond compare

  491. that we want

  492. and crave

  493. and long for.

  494. In our professional lives

  495. and in our societal lives

  496. we love for status

  497. the praise of others

  498. the pride of position

  499. the satisfaction

  500. of gaining a title.

  501. in our world

  502. of physical means

  503. we love success

  504. the thrill of victory

  505. the pride of achievement

  506. the justification

  507. that our work is worth it

  508. because it's produced

  509. something good

  510. that I can point to

  511. and say

  512. that's what my life

  513. is worth

  514. that's what I have built.

  515. and we have a world

  516. that says

  517. if you're looking

  518. for meaning

  519. look inside yourself

  520. find what's true

  521. about yourself

  522. your authentic reality

  523. whatever it is

  524. it's in you

  525. and in these things

  526. our souls crave something

  527. we believe

  528. that we can have

  529. a good

  530. apart from Jesus

  531. in them

  532. and they look shiny

  533. and attractive

  534. and we think

  535. and look

  536. here's the thing

  537. they give us

  538. something

  539. right

  540. they give us

  541. a short hit

  542. they make us think

  543. in the moment

  544. hey this is great

  545. this is what I want

  546. but like an addict

  547. we find ourselves

  548. constantly disappointed

  549. it's never enough

  550. everything the world promises

  551. it's never gonna satisfy

  552. it's never gonna be

  553. the thing

  554. that your soul

  555. was made for

  556. Jesus says

  557. to follow me

  558. you must forsake

  559. gaining the things

  560. of this world

  561. in order to gain

  562. your soul

  563. so the apostle Paul

  564. in Philippians 3

  565. says I count

  566. everything is lost

  567. because of the surpassing

  568. worth of knowing

  569. Christ Jesus

  570. my Lord

  571. that I may know him

  572. and the power

  573. of his resurrection

  574. may share in his

  575. sufferings

  576. becoming like him

  577. in his death

  578. that by any means

  579. possible

  580. I may attain

  581. the resurrection

  582. from the dead

  583. I found a great quote

  584. Helen Rosevere

  585. is a missionary

  586. I highly respect

  587. her life is amazing

  588. she spent 40 years

  589. doing medical missionaries

  590. in central Africa

  591. she suffered deeply

  592. for the gospel

  593. in some unspeakable ways

  594. she also lived

  595. she also lived a faithful

  596. life of singleness

  597. despite her desires

  598. otherwise

  599. to do so

  600. and yet at the very end

  601. of her time

  602. at the mission

  603. 40 years of service

  604. she was sidelined

  605. and excluded

  606. at the very end

  607. of her service

  608. she said

  609. Jesus really

  610. can I have the victory parade

  611. and this is what

  612. Jesus spoke to her heart

  613. you no longer want

  614. Jesus only

  615. but Jesus plus

  616. plus respect

  617. popularity

  618. public opinion

  619. success

  620. and pride

  621. you wanted to go out

  622. with all the trumpets

  623. blaring

  624. from a farewell

  625. that you organized

  626. for yourself

  627. with photographs

  628. and tape recordings

  629. to show

  630. and play at home

  631. just to reveal

  632. what you had achieved

  633. you wanted to feel

  634. needed

  635. and respected

  636. you wanted

  637. the other missionaries

  638. to be worried

  639. about how they'd ever

  640. carry on

  641. after you're gone

  642. you'd like letters

  643. when you go home

  644. to tell how much

  645. they realize

  646. they owe to you

  647. how much

  648. they miss you

  649. all this and more

  650. Jesus plus

  651. no

  652. you can't

  653. have it

  654. either

  655. it must be

  656. Jesus only

  657. or you'll find

  658. you have no Jesus

  659. you'll substitute

  660. Helen Rosevere

  661. instead

  662. I can think

  663. of my friends

  664. two dear friends

  665. who I know

  666. graduates of the

  667. prestigious

  668. Harvard Law School

  669. I think I've spoken

  670. to them

  671. maybe to you

  672. before about them

  673. but they graduated

  674. from one of the

  675. top law schools

  676. in the world

  677. and they had

  678. the world

  679. before them

  680. but living for

  681. the kingdom

  682. for them

  683. living out

  684. these verses

  685. meant

  686. not living

  687. on two salaries

  688. but on one

  689. so that by

  690. careful budgeting

  691. they freed

  692. themselves up

  693. from debt

  694. within

  695. like three

  696. or four years

  697. taking one

  698. of their

  699. extensive salaries

  700. and putting it

  701. entirely towards

  702. debt reduction

  703. why?

  704. so that they

  705. could give

  706. freely to the church

  707. and so that they

  708. would be freed

  709. from the bondage

  710. of that

  711. to follow

  712. whatever God did

  713. and then God

  714. brought them

  715. a family

  716. and one of them

  717. stayed home

  718. and gave up

  719. their career

  720. to care for

  721. their children

  722. the other one

  723. moved from a

  724. prestigious law firm

  725. with all of the

  726. pomp and circumstance

  727. and the salary

  728. to an in-house

  729. corporate law job

  730. so that they could

  731. serve in their church

  732. so that they could

  733. be involved

  734. in the raising

  735. of their family

  736. so that they could

  737. and they've ended

  738. up serving

  739. as elders

  740. and deacons

  741. it's a very

  742. practical

  743. but profound

  744. way

  745. where someone

  746. looked at the

  747. world and said

  748. I don't want

  749. what you want

  750. that's going to

  751. take my soul

  752. away

  753. this is what

  754. Jesus calls us

  755. to

  756. forsaking the

  757. things that the

  758. world offers

  759. so that we might

  760. instead

  761. pursue the life

  762. that Jesus

  763. wants us to

  764. follow

  765. following him

  766. in the way

  767. of the cross

  768. giving up

  769. the things

  770. of the world

  771. so that we

  772. might gain

  773. him

  774. now if the

  775. way of the

  776. cross includes

  777. this dying

  778. to self

  779. preservation

  780. and this dying

  781. to self

  782. gratification

  783. the third thing

  784. Jesus says

  785. is that the

  786. way of the

  787. cross

  788. means dying

  789. to self

  790. identity

  791. and being

  792. identified by

  793. faith in

  794. Jesus

  795. this is what

  796. verse 38

  797. says to us

  798. why do I

  799. talk about

  800. identity here

  801. I don't see

  802. identity in the

  803. text right

  804. Jesus is talking

  805. about being

  806. ashamed

  807. but what Jesus

  808. is talking about

  809. is being publicly

  810. identified

  811. that is our

  812. identity publicly

  813. what other people

  814. know about us

  815. is being a

  816. follower of

  817. Christ

  818. now we've

  819. already talked

  820. about this

  821. the cross was

  822. the most

  823. shameful means

  824. of Roman

  825. persecution

  826. and oppression

  827. and execution

  828. it was not a

  829. symbol used in

  830. jewelry

  831. or used in

  832. pastel pictures

  833. with sheep in

  834. the background

  835. the cross was

  836. something ugly

  837. and scorned

  838. and shamed

  839. it would be like

  840. us carrying around

  841. an electric chair

  842. you know

  843. in our jewelry

  844. or identifying

  845. with one who

  846. said hey you know

  847. that guy who just

  848. died in the electric

  849. chair he's my

  850. hero he's the

  851. one who I follow

  852. I'm about him

  853. and Jesus

  854. that's what it

  855. is would have

  856. been like in

  857. the first century

  858. to say I

  859. identify with a

  860. crucified man

  861. but Jesus

  862. says if you are

  863. ashamed of me

  864. before men

  865. then you have

  866. no part of me

  867. and I will be

  868. ashamed of you

  869. at the end

  870. the cross was

  871. brutal it was

  872. public and it

  873. was meant to

  874. humiliate and

  875. shame those

  876. who were

  877. executed and

  878. when Jesus

  879. calls us to

  880. identify with

  881. him by faith

  882. to follow him

  883. it is to take

  884. that upon

  885. ourselves and be

  886. willing to say

  887. I am not ashamed

  888. of this man that

  889. the world is

  890. ashamed of

  891. how do we

  892. publicly identify

  893. it's a great

  894. Stephen Curtis

  895. Chapman song from

  896. the 90s about

  897. you know not

  898. t-shirts and

  899. bumper stickers and

  900. whatever but

  901. really it's true

  902. right how do we

  903. identify with

  904. Jesus publicly

  905. it's not it's

  906. not with a

  907. hat or shirt

  908. or slogan

  909. but it's with the

  910. substance of who

  911. we are being

  912. presented to

  913. others how do

  914. we present

  915. ourselves to

  916. others what do

  917. you want what do

  918. I want you to

  919. know about me

  920. above all

  921. is that my

  922. identity is

  923. found by being

  924. a follower of

  925. Christ and

  926. look this is a

  927. hard thing in

  928. our world today

  929. right for one

  930. thing our world

  931. presses in our

  932. identity is a

  933. huge thing and

  934. it's up to you

  935. have to figure it

  936. out you have to

  937. make it we have

  938. all these complex

  939. identities all

  940. these different

  941. roles and the

  942. world is saying

  943. make one of those

  944. your primary

  945. identity whatever it

  946. is and some of

  947. them are things

  948. that we inherit or

  949. that we we have

  950. have been born into

  951. some of them are

  952. things that we the

  953. world says you can

  954. choose what your

  955. identity is but

  956. either way they

  957. become our badge of

  958. honor this is what I

  959. want you to know

  960. about me above

  961. everything else and

  962. Jesus comes and

  963. says make your most

  964. fundamental identity

  965. that you know and

  966. follow me and it

  967. will cost you to do

  968. that in our world

  969. today people will

  970. scorn you and sneer

  971. at your foolishness

  972. in the academy they

  973. will dismiss you as

  974. not a serious

  975. thoughtful person

  976. some in our culture

  977. will hate you

  978. because of your

  979. bigoted perspectives

  980. because of your desire

  981. to oppress the freedom

  982. of other people

  983. some of them will

  984. laugh at you

  985. many of them will

  986. ignore you

  987. some will resist you

  988. to not be ashamed

  989. of Jesus

  990. may lead to others

  991. seeking to shame

  992. you

  993. Jesus says this is the

  994. way of the cross

  995. you cannot be ashamed

  996. of me and follow me

  997. you cannot deny

  998. yourself pick up your

  999. cross and follow me

  1000. if you're not willing

  1001. to be publicly

  1002. identified

1003. and if you can't do

1004. that then you have no

1005. part of me you have no

  1006. part of the salvation

1007. that I bring and in the

1008. last day when I bring

  1009. come and bring all

1010. who are mine to glory

  1011. the glory that the

  1012. father's given me

1013. when I finally show up

  1014. and establish my

1015. kingdom in all of its

  1016. fullness which is still

1017. yet to come for us

1018. you will not be on the

1019. inside but you will be

  1020. on the outside

  1021. and I will say I have

  1022. I don't know you

  1023. friends are you ashamed

  1024. of others knowing that

  1025. you follow Jesus

1026. are you ashamed of his

  1027. teachings

  1028. are you afraid ashamed

  1029. of his gospel

1030. Jesus says this is what

1031. we're to expect when we

1032. follow him not a life of

1033. ease not a life of

1034. comfort not a life of

  1035. unending and overcoming

  1036. victory certainly Jesus

  1037. does amazing things for

1038. us but what he calls us

1039. to is to deny ourselves

1040. pick up his cross walk

1041. in a path of suffering

  1042. and follow him knowing

1043. that the reward that is

1044. in him and the treasure

1045. that we have in him is

  1046. greater than anything we

1047. would seek to preserve or

1048. keep if we hold on to

1049. the things of this world

  1050. the pattern of our

  1051. salvation becomes the

1052. pattern of our life as

1053. we follow a savior who

1054. loved us so much that he

1055. left heaven and all the

  1056. privileges and perks right

1057. he who was equal with

1058. God did not count equality

1059. with God something to be

  1060. grasped but humbled

1061. himself took on the form

  1062. of a servant became a

  1063. human being suffered and

1064. died on the cross for the

  1065. salvation of people who

1066. didn't even know he had

1067. come for them this is the

1068. pattern this is the way

1069. that we follow because it

1070. was Jesus way and we know

1071. that he rose from the dead

1072. and we know that one day

1073. because he has risen from

1074. the dead being with him

1075. will mean we will be

1076. forever with him within the

1077. life that he has but let's

1078. look to Jesus let's look to

1079. Jesus and know that this is

1080. what it will mean to follow

  1081. him let's pray together

1082. Lord Jesus we come to you

1083. now and we we hear this

1084. word and it is a word of

1085. challenge to us because we

  1086. recognize our hearts our

1087. hearts are fickle so often

1088. we love other things more

1089. than we love you so often

1090. we are fearful of this

1091. world and in doing so we

1092. are ashamed of you Lord so

  1093. often Lord rather than

1094. trusting you and walking in

1095. faith in the path that you

1096. have set Lord we seek to

1097. determine our own way God I

1098. pray right now by your Holy

1099. Spirit Lord that you would

1100. reveal to us where this may

1101. be true in our own hearts

1102. and lives Lord I pray that as

1103. we see these things in our

1104. hearts that we might surrender

1105. them to you Lord I pray

1106. these things in Jesus name

  1107. amen
