  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. Would you turn with me to Micah chapter 4?

    Micah 4 chapter mention

  3. That's page 730 in the Pew Bible.

  4. We will be looking at verses 1 through 8 of Micah chapter 4 today.

    Micah 4 chapter mention

  5. As you turn there, let me pray for us, and then I'll read our text.

  6. Father, what a great promise it is that Christ is ours forevermore,

  7. that you have given your own self to us in your Son

  8. and promised to hold us until the end.

  9. Father, as we come to your word now, we pray that this great hope,

  10. this great promise would again become real to our hearts

  11. as we hear this message from Micah about the hope that you have laid up for us

  12. and that you have accomplished for us according to your good plan and purpose.

  13. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  14. All right, Micah 4, verses 1 through 8.

    Micah 4:1–8

  15. It shall come to pass in the later days

  16. that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established

  17. as the highest of the mountains, and it shall be lifted up above the hills.

  18. And people shall flow to it, and many nations shall come and say,

  19. Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,

  20. to the house of the God of Jacob,

  21. that he may teach us his ways, and they may walk in his paths.

  22. For out of Zion shall go forth the law

  23. and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

  24. He shall judge between many peoples

  25. and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away.

  26. And they shall beat their swords into plowshares

  27. and their spears into pruning hooks.

  28. Nations shall not lift up sword against nation,

  29. neither shall they learn war anymore.

  30. But they shall sit, every man,

  31. under his vine and under his fig tree,

  32. and no one shall make them afraid.

  33. For the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.

  34. For all the peoples walk, each in the name of its God,

  35. but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.

  36. And that day, declares the Lord,

  37. I will assemble the lame

  38. and gather those who have been driven away

  39. and those whom I have afflicted.

  40. And the lame I will make the remnant

  41. and those who are cast off a strong nation.

  42. And the Lord will reign over them in Mount Zion

  43. from this time forth and forevermore.

  44. And you, O tower of the flock,

  45. hill of the daughter of Zion,

  46. to you it shall come.

  47. The former dominion shall come.

  48. Kingship for the daughter of Jerusalem.

  49. So Micah.

  50. Micah's writing and ministering

  51. in a time of great crisis.

  52. In a time of great difficulty.

  53. If you remember back in chapter 1, verse 1,

  54. we're told that the word of the Lord came to Micah

  55. during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.

  56. That's the late 8th century B.C.

  57. And it was a time of massive upheaval in ancient Israel.

  58. In fact, some Old Testament scholars think

  59. that this particular passage,

  60. this message from Micah chapter 4,

    Micah 4 chapter mention

  61. was perhaps first given around 701 B.C.,

  62. which was when Assyria,

  63. the great sort of superpower of the day,

  64. had invaded Judah during the reign of Hezekiah.

  65. And in that invasion,

  66. most of the country,

  67. politically and economically,

  68. had been devastated.

  69. But if you remember,

  70. the literary context of this passage,

  71. in particular chapter 3

  72. that we looked at last week

  73. that leads up to it,

  74. talks about the failure

  75. and the selfishness

  76. of Israel's own leaders.

  77. And it speaks of the coming judgment

  78. that will make Jerusalem,

  79. or Zion,

  80. which is another name for Jerusalem,

  81. that coming judgment

  82. would make Jerusalem

  83. a heap of ruins.

  84. Jerusalem would be plowed like a field.

  85. So chapter 4 is a message

  86. given to people,

  87. not just in political or economic turmoil,

  88. but in spiritual turmoil,

  89. in spiritual crisis.

  90. Their leaders had failed them,

  91. and God's judgment was coming.

  92. The whole people of God

  93. seemed to be on the verge of collapse

  94. under the weight of sin.

  95. I wonder,

  96. how do you feel

  97. in times of crisis?

  98. How do you react?

  99. Not just in political

  100. or economic crisis,

  101. but more importantly,

  102. in times of spiritual crisis.

  103. How do you respond?

  104. How do you react

  105. when you learn that

  106. perhaps a well-known pastor

  107. or author

  108. has failed morally?

  109. How do you feel?

  110. How do you react

  111. when you see

  112. more covetousness

  113. and greed

  114. in professing Christians

  115. than generosity

  116. and grace?

  117. How do you react

  118. when you discover

  119. that perhaps

  120. some of the things

  121. you've been taught

  122. aren't actually

  123. what God's Word says,

  124. but the twisting

  125. of God's Word

  126. by selfish

  127. and self-centered teachers?

  128. Micah was confronting

  129. all of those things

  130. in his day,

  131. and so do we.

  132. And Micah has been

  133. pointing these things out

  134. in the first three chapters,

  135. calling for lament,

  136. for grief and sorrow

  137. over these things,

  138. and he's been calling

  139. for repentance,

  140. for confession

  141. and turning away from sin.

  142. For the past few weeks,

  143. we've been considering

  144. these messages

  145. of judgment,

  146. of lamentation,

  147. this call to repentance.

  148. repentance.

  149. But how do we go on?

  150. Sometimes when the

  151. spiritual crisis

  152. is so great,

  153. we just want to give up.

  154. We think,

  155. if that's what it means

  156. to follow God,

  157. if that's the cost,

  158. if that's the pain,

  159. I don't want anything

  160. to do with it.

  161. The whole thing

  162. is hopeless.

  163. hopeless.

  164. And so,

  165. into this crisis,

  166. God,

  167. through Micah,

  168. speaks not just

  169. a message of judgment,

  170. but also a message

  171. of hope.

  172. And part of what

  173. these messages of hope

  174. are meant to do

  175. is to encourage

  176. our perseverance.

  177. They're written

  178. to people in crisis,

  179. in turmoil,

  180. encouraging us

  181. to hold on,

  182. to press on,

  183. even in the midst

  184. of the most difficult times.

  185. And we see that

  186. this very thing

  187. is pointed to

  188. in verse 5.

  189. In verse 5

  190. of our passage,

  191. we see perhaps

  192. the main application

  193. that Micah wants

  194. to impart

  195. to his listeners.

  196. He says to a people

  197. in the midst

  198. of spiritual crisis,

  199. in the midst

  200. of this upheaval,

  201. he says,

  202. look,

  203. all the people's walk,

  204. each in the name

  205. of its God.

  206. But knowing what we know,

  207. even in the midst

  208. of this turmoil

  209. and difficulty,

  210. we will walk.

  211. Walk in the name

  212. of the Lord,

  213. our God,

  214. forever and ever.

  215. Why?

  216. Why keep walking

  217. in the name of the Lord,

  218. even when politically,

  219. economically,

  220. and spiritually,

  221. everything is crumbling?

  222. Well,

  223. because as our passage says,

  224. there's hope.

  225. Because God has a future plan

  226. to establish his kingdom,

  227. to establish his kingdom,

  228. and that plan

  229. will not fail.

  230. He has spoken,

  231. and so it shall be.

  232. So let's look at the message

  233. of hope in this passage

  234. and consider how it encourages us

  235. to persevere,

  236. to keep walking

  237. in the name of the Lord,

  238. even in difficult times.

  239. First,

  240. Micah says,

  241. keep walking

  242. in the name

  243. of the Lord,

  244. because one day

  245. God will draw

  246. all nations

  247. to himself.

  248. Keep walking

  249. in the name

  250. of the Lord,

  251. church,

  252. because one day

  253. God will draw

  254. all nations

  255. to himself.

  256. We see this

  257. in verses 1 and 2.

  258. First in verse 1,

  259. Micah says,

  260. it shall come to pass

  261. in the latter days

  262. that the mountain

  263. of the house

  264. of the Lord

  265. shall be established

  266. as the highest

  267. of the mountains,

  268. and it shall be lifted up

  269. above the hills.

  270. Now, obviously,

  271. Micah's point here

  272. isn't ultimately

  273. about elevation,

  274. right?

  275. It's about exaltation.

  276. He's saying that

  277. the God of the Bible,

  278. the God of Israel,

  279. the Lord,

  280. will one day

  281. be exalted

  282. and seen

  283. as the great

  284. and glorious God

  285. that he is,

  286. and all other

  287. so-called gods

  288. will be exposed

  289. as empty idols.

  290. And when God

  291. exalts himself

  292. in this unmistakable way,

  293. then,

  294. Micah goes on to say,

  295. people shall flow

  296. to it.

  297. And many nations

  298. shall come

  299. and say,

  300. come,

  301. let us go up

  302. to the mountain

  303. of the Lord,

  304. to the house

  305. of the God of Jacob,

  306. that he may teach us

  307. his ways,

  308. that we may walk

  309. in his paths.

  310. For out of Zion

  311. shall go forth

  312. the law

  313. and the word

  314. of the Lord

  315. from Jerusalem.

  316. So Micah sees here

  317. a future day

  318. when God's word

  319. streams forth

  320. from God's

  321. exalted presence

  322. out to all

  323. the nations,

  324. and then those nations

  325. come streaming in

  326. desiring more

  327. of God's word,

  328. desiring to be taught

  329. his ways,

  330. desiring to walk

  331. in his paths.

  332. Now,

  333. in Micah's day,

  334. the only nations

  335. streaming to Jerusalem

  336. were nations

  337. who wanted nothing

  338. to do with Israel's God.

  339. The only nations

  340. flowing towards Jerusalem

  341. were flowing

  342. with violence

  343. and the machinations

  344. of war.

  345. war.

  346. In fact,

  347. if you read the story

  348. of Assyria's invasion

  349. into Judah

  350. in the 8th century,

  351. the Assyrian armies

  352. mock God

  353. and say he's no better

  354. than all the other gods

  355. they've conquered.

  356. And if you and I

  357. were standing on the wall

  358. of Jerusalem that day

  359. listening to the Assyrian

  360. generals mock the Lord,

  361. seeing the devastation

  362. they had wrought,

  363. seeing the proof

  364. that they had toppled

  365. countries and nations

  366. a lot more mighty

  367. than Judah,

  368. would we too

  369. have thought,

  370. why not just give up?

  371. Why not just join

  372. the winning party?

  373. Haven't our leaders

  374. been terrible to us anyway?

  375. I wonder if it doesn't

  376. feel the same today.

  377. It often feels like

  378. the world wants nothing

  379. to do with the true God.

  380. God seems irrelevant

  381. at best.

  382. But it won't always

  383. be that way.

  384. Micah says,

  385. God will be seen

  386. as great.

  387. And the nations

  388. will stream in.

  389. And they will want

  390. to walk in his ways

  391. because his ways

  392. are good

  393. and they're full of life.

  394. You know,

  395. sometimes people talk

  396. about not wanting

  397. to be on the wrong

  398. side of history,

  399. right?

  400. But Micah is saying,

  401. brothers and sisters,

  402. extend your timeline

  403. long enough.

  404. And there's only one way

  405. to not be on the wrong

  406. side of history.

  407. And it's to walk

  408. in the ways

  409. of the Lord our God.

  410. Of course,

  411. Micah didn't see

  412. this promise fulfilled

  413. in his day.

  414. And we don't necessarily

  415. see this promise

  416. completed in our day

  417. either, do we?

  418. The fullness of this promise

  419. awaits the day

  420. that we read about

  421. in Revelation 21

  422. that Elizabeth read for us

  423. earlier in the service.

  424. When the heavenly Jerusalem

  425. descends,

  426. when God's presence

  427. comes to earth,

  428. and in the new heavens

  429. and new earth,

  430. a countless multitude

  431. from every nation

  432. streams in,

  433. bearing their gifts

  434. and worshiping God.

  435. God's presence

  436. is yet to come.

  437. And we don't see it

  438. But even though

  439. the completion

  440. of this promise

  441. is yet to come,

  442. don't we see it

  443. beginning to take shape?

  444. When Jesus the Messiah

  445. rose from the grave,

  446. and when 40 days later

  447. he ascended

  448. to the right hand

  449. of the Father,

  450. this promise

  451. began to be fulfilled.

  452. Christ ascended

  453. to the heavenly Zion,

  454. and from the Father's

  455. right hand

  456. he poured out

  457. his Spirit

  458. so that the law

  459. might go forth

  460. and be written

  461. on our hearts.

  462. And from the day

  463. of Pentecost

  464. until today

  465. that word

  466. has gone forth

  467. and the nations

  468. have begun

  469. to flow

  470. to God the Father

  471. and to Jesus the Son.

  472. Not in completion,

  473. but the streams

  474. have begun to flow.

  475. That's raw.

  476. Look at us.

  477. Look around.

  478. Count the nationalities

  479. and ethnicities

  480. in this room alone.

  481. And then consider

  482. that this morning

  483. across the entire world

  484. churches gather

  485. in the name of Jesus,

  486. the crucified

  487. and risen Messiah,

  488. to draw near

  489. to God

  490. with confidence

  491. and assurance

  492. in his name.

  493. And what is it

  494. we're saying

  495. as we gather here

  496. and across New Haven

  497. and across Connecticut

  498. and across North America

  499. and across the entire globe?

  500. What is it

  501. all of these nations

  502. are saying,

  503. all of the international church

  504. is saying

  505. as we gather?

  506. Are we not saying,

  507. come,

  508. let us go up

  509. to the mountain

  510. of the Lord,

  511. to the house

  512. of the God of Jacob,

  513. that he may teach us

  514. his ways

  515. and that we may walk

  516. in his paths?

  517. So brothers and sisters,

  518. keep walking

  519. in the name of the Lord,

  520. even in difficult times

  521. because one day

  522. God is going to draw

  523. all nations to himself.

  524. And that's the first part

  525. of Micah's message of hope.

  526. The second part is this,

  527. keep walking

  528. in the name of the Lord

  529. because one day

  530. God's justice

  531. will bring global peace

  532. and provision.

  533. Keep walking

  534. in the name of the Lord,

  535. even in difficult days

  536. because one day

  537. God's justice

  538. will bring global peace

  539. and provision.

  540. We see this

  541. in verses 3 and 4.

  542. Micah begins

  543. by speaking

  544. of God's righteousness,

  545. his perfect justice

  546. that will settle

  547. all the disputes

  548. between the nations.

  549. Verse 3,

  550. he shall judge

  551. between many peoples

  552. and shall decide disputes

  553. for strong nations

  554. far away.

  555. Micah foresees a time

  556. when God will settle

  557. every claim

  558. in perfect,

  559. justice.

  560. Imagine a world

  561. where every dispute,

  562. every conflict,

  563. every clashing

  564. of rights,

  565. every deep history

  566. of conflict

  567. and violence,

  568. imagine a world

  569. where all that

  570. has finally been

  571. settled.

  572. And in the wake

  573. of such perfect justice,

  574. Micah says,

  575. there will be no more need

  576. for warfare

  577. and they shall beat

  578. their swords

  579. into plowshares

  580. and their spears

  581. into pruning hooks.

  582. Nations shall not

  583. lift up sword

  584. against nation,

  585. neither shall they learn

  586. war anymore.

  587. If you're familiar

  588. with the book of Isaiah,

  589. who was a contemporary

  590. of Micah,

  591. Isaiah gives

  592. almost an identical

  593. prophecy

  594. in his book as well.

  595. Clearly,

  596. this is something

  597. that God wanted

  598. his people to see

  599. and to know.

  600. Imagine a world,

  601. imagine a world

  602. where all the money

  603. and materials

  604. and imagination

  605. that we human beings

  606. put into engines

  607. of war

  608. and destruction

  609. and security

  610. are turned instead

  611. to cultivation

  612. and not devastation.

  613. We take all that money

  614. and material

  615. and imagination

  616. and we put it

  617. into pursuits

  618. that are about

  619. building up

  620. and not tearing down,

  621. that are about

  622. agriculture

  623. and artistry

  624. and not war

  625. and suffering.

  626. Do we even let ourselves

  627. imagine

  628. such a future?

  629. And what results

  630. from the end,

  631. this ending

  632. of human war

  633. because of the perfect

  634. justice of God?

  635. Verse 4,

  636. they shall sit

  637. every man under his vine

  638. and under his fig tree

  639. and no one

  640. shall make them afraid

  641. for the mouth

  642. of the Lord

  643. of hosts

  644. has spoken.

  645. The picture here

  646. isn't just that

  647. of prosperity,

  648. although it is that.

  649. You know,

  650. the vine

  651. and the fig tree,

  652. those were images

  653. of abundance,

  654. of flourishing.

  655. But the image

  656. isn't just one

  657. of prosperity.

  658. The image

  659. is also one

  660. of contentment.

  661. Every man

  662. under his vine

  663. and under his fig tree

  664. no longer afraid

  665. that there isn't enough

  666. to go around,

  667. no longer coveting

  668. what someone else has,

  669. no longer plotting

  670. and scheming

  671. how to squeeze

  672. more profits

  673. and more produce

  674. out of less

  675. and less pay.

  676. It's a picture

  677. of living without fear

  678. because God will provide.

  679. We live in a world

  680. where consumption

  681. and competition

  682. are the air

  683. that we breathe.

  684. and so often

  685. even as Christians

  686. because we've been

  687. breathing that air

  688. for so long,

  689. we don't even realize it.

  690. I remember as a kid

  691. when I'd go to visit

  692. my friends' houses,

  693. I remember,

  694. I don't know why

  695. I noticed this

  696. and why I remember this,

  697. but I remember

  698. that each of my friends' houses

  699. had their own

  700. particular smell.

  701. I don't know,

  702. maybe it was just

  703. the food

  704. that they would

  705. normally cook

  706. or the cleaning products

  707. that their parents

  708. would use

  709. or just the age

  710. and materials

  711. of the house,

  712. whatever,

  713. but I'd go into

  714. my friends' houses

  715. and be like,

  716. man,

  717. this house

  718. kind of smells

  719. different.

  720. Am I the only weirdo

  721. who noticed that

  722. growing up?

  723. And I used to think,

  724. why do my friends' houses

  725. smell different,

  726. smell funny,

  727. and mine doesn't?

  728. And then you have

  729. that realization,

  730. ah,

  731. my house must smell too

  732. and I'm just used to it,

  733. right?

  734. I don't notice it.

  735. And you get a little

  736. self-conscious,

  737. you're like,

  738. oh man,

  739. what does my house

  740. smell like?

  741. You know,

  742. but the point is this,

  743. in this passage

  744. in Micah,

  745. the breeze of God's future

  746. is blowing into our present.

  747. There's a wind

  748. from the presence

  749. in the house of God

  750. coming in

  751. to the present.

  752. And that future

  753. is not a future

  754. of fear

  755. and competition

  756. and it's not a future

  757. of greed

  758. and war

  759. but of peace

  760. and contentment

  761. and provision.

  762. And we've grown up

  763. in the house

  764. of consumption

  765. and competition

  766. for so long

  767. that we don't realize

  768. that our house

  769. kind of smells

  770. until we catch

  771. the breeze

  772. of God's future.

  773. And like a fresh wind

  774. full of summer flowers,

  775. it starts to open us up

  776. to new possibilities.

  777. You know,

  778. the early church

  779. felt this wind

  780. on their face.

  781. Listen to Acts 4,

  782. 32 through 35.

  783. Now the number

  784. of those who believed

  785. were of one heart

  786. and soul

  787. and no one said

  788. that any of the things

  789. that belonged to him

  790. was his own

  791. but they had everything

  792. in common.

  793. And with great power

  794. the apostles

  795. were giving their testimony

  796. to the resurrection

  797. of the Lord Jesus

  798. and great grace

  799. was upon them all.

  800. There was not

  801. a needy person

  802. among them

  803. for as many

  804. as were owners

  805. of lands or houses

  806. sold them

  807. and brought the proceeds

  808. of what was sold

  809. and laid it

  810. at the apostles' feet

  811. and it was distributed

  812. to each

  813. as any had need.

  814. Do you see

  815. what Luke

  816. is describing here?

  817. As the people

  818. held more

  819. and more tightly

  820. to the resurrection

  821. of Jesus

  822. as they held

  823. more tightly

  824. to the great grace

  825. that they had

  826. and the hope

  827. that they had

  828. and the confidence

  829. that they had

  830. in the resurrection

  831. of Christ

  832. as they held

  833. tightly to that

  834. they found

  835. that they could

  836. suddenly start

  837. to loosen

  838. their grip

  839. on money

  840. and possessions.

  841. They started

  842. to realize

  843. that they weren't

  844. in competition

  845. anymore.

  846. that they had

  847. everything they needed

  848. forever

  849. in the resurrection

  850. of Jesus

  851. and now

  852. they could be

  853. generous

  854. radically so.

  855. Was this

  856. the fulfillment

  857. of Micah's prophecy?

  858. Well again

  859. like we saw

  860. in verses 1 and 2

  861. there is a completion

  862. to Micah's vision

  863. that still awaits us

  864. in the future.

  865. in the new heavens

  866. and new earth

  867. this will be true

  868. without any remainder.

  869. But even though

  870. the completion

  871. awaits the future

  872. the beginning

  873. is here.

  874. When the church

  875. practices

  876. this sort

  877. of radical generosity

  878. in the boldness

  879. and the confidence

  880. of the resurrection

  881. we start

  882. to catch

  883. the wind

  884. that blows

  885. through God's

  886. future

  887. and our house

  888. starts to smell

  889. a little differently.

  890. And Micah's point

  891. is that

  892. this is

  893. where God

  894. is certainly

  895. taking the future.

  896. So don't give up.

  897. In the midst

  898. of difficult times

  899. and times of crisis

  900. times when the church

  901. feels and smells

  902. more like the kingdoms

  903. of this world

  904. rather than the kingdom

  905. of God

  906. don't throw in the towel.

  907. Keep walking

  908. in the name

  909. of the Lord

  910. our God.

  911. Keep pursuing peace.

  912. Jesus said

  913. blessed are the peacemakers.

  914. Keep pursuing peace

  915. because that is

  916. where the future

  917. is going.

  918. Keep pursuing contentment

  919. in the riches

  920. of the resurrection

  921. because that is

  922. where the future

  923. is going.

  924. And don't be afraid.

  925. Keep walking

  926. in the name

  927. of the Lord

  928. because one day

  929. God's justice

  930. will bring

  931. global peace

  932. and provision.

  933. Well finally

  934. then we come

  935. to Micah's third

  936. and last point.

  937. Keep walking

  938. in the name

  939. of the Lord

  940. because one day

  941. God

  942. will restore

  943. the weak

  944. and afflicted.

  945. Keep walking

  946. in the name

  947. of the Lord

  948. even in difficult days

  949. because one day

  950. God will restore

  951. the weak

  952. and the afflicted.

  953. In verses 6-9

  954. you can tell

  955. sort of the voice

  956. of the passage

  957. shifts

  958. doesn't it?

  959. No longer

  960. is it Micah's voice

  961. sort of reporting

  962. what God will do

  963. but here we have

  964. the direct speech

  965. of God.

  966. God speaking

  967. through Micah

  968. in the first person.

  969. Here's a message

  970. that God wants

  971. his people

  972. to hear loud

  973. and clear

  974. coming in his own voice

  975. coming from his own heart.

  976. The future

  977. that God

  978. will surely

  979. bring to pass.

  980. And this future

  981. that God

  982. will surely

  983. bring to pass

  984. won't just mean

  985. the gathering

  986. of the nations

  987. and it won't just mean

  988. global peace

  989. and provision.

  990. All those things

  991. are surely wonderful

  992. and all those things

  993. are surely testimonies

  994. to God's greatness

  995. and glory.

  996. But as Micah's

  997. original listeners

  998. heard all that God

  999. was going to do

  1000. with respect

  1001. to the nations

  1002. there must have been

  1003. some who thought

  1004. in their hearts

  1005. that's what God's

  1006. going to do

  1007. with the world

  1008. that's what God's

  1009. going to do

  1010. with the nations

  1011. but what's coming

  1012. what is God

  1013. going to do

  1014. with us?

  1015. What will God

  1016. do with me?

  1017. What's God's plan

  1018. for those

  1019. who have suffered

  1020. the affliction

  1021. of these difficult days?

  1022. What's God's plan

  1023. for those

  1024. who have felt

  1025. the betrayal

  1026. of failed leaders

  1027. of corrupt authorities

  1028. of false preachers?

  1029. What's God's plan

  1030. for those

  1031. who have felt

  1032. the sting

  1033. and conviction

  1034. of their own sin

  1035. too?

  1036. Listen again

  1037. to what God

  1038. says in his mercy.

  1039. In that day

  1040. declares the Lord

  1041. I will assemble

  1042. the lame

  1043. and gather

  1044. those who have

  1045. been driven away.

  1046. To those

  1047. whom I have

  1048. afflicted

  1049. and the lame

  1050. I will make

  1051. a remnant

  1052. and those

  1053. who were cast off

  1054. I will make them

  1055. a strong nation

  1056. and the Lord

  1057. will reign over them

  1058. in Mount Zion

  1059. from this time

  1060. forth and forevermore.

  1061. And you

1062. O tower of the flock

  1063. hill of the daughter

  1064. of Zion

  1065. to you

  1066. shall it come

  1067. the former dominion

  1068. shall come

  1069. kingship for the daughter

  1070. of Jerusalem.

  1071. God sees

  1072. the affliction

  1073. of his people

  1074. whether their affliction

  1075. comes

  1076. because of the sins

  1077. of others

  1078. or whether their

  1079. affliction comes

1080. because of their own sins

  1081. or whether their

  1082. affliction comes

  1083. simply because

1084. we live in a fallen

  1085. world.

1086. God sees all of it.

  1087. And he says

  1088. to those who grieve

  1089. and those who limp

  1090. and those who

  1091. are driven

  1092. and feel far away

  1093. God says

  1094. I will

  1095. gather you.

  1096. The day will come

  1097. when I will wipe

  1098. all tears away.

  1099. The day will come

  1100. when you will be

  1101. so close to me

  1102. that you will

  1103. see my face

  1104. and you won't need

1105. the light of a lamp.

  1106. You won't even need

1107. the light of the sun

  1108. because I'm going

  1109. to be your light.

  1110. And though you're

  1111. weak now

  1112. though it feels

  1113. like you can barely

  1114. walk

  1115. one day

  1116. you will reign

  1117. with me

  1118. forever and ever.

  1119. what is perhaps

  1120. the greatest

  1121. stumbling block

  1122. in our walk

  1123. with the Lord?

  1124. What's the thing

  1125. that often tempts us

  1126. the most to want

  1127. to give up

  1128. and give in?

1129. Is it not the heavy

  1130. weight

  1131. of our griefs

  1132. and our shame?

  1133. Our losses

  1134. and our failures.

  1135. We feel like

  1136. we've suffered

  1137. too much

  1138. and we feel like

  1139. we've sinned

  1140. too much

  1141. and so we just

  1142. lose hope

  1143. and walk away.

  1144. But God says

  1145. I'm going

  1146. to gather you.

  1147. I'm going to wrap

  1148. my arms around you

  1149. like a shepherd

  1150. lifting the wounded

  1151. sheep

  1152. and I'm going

  1153. to make you

  1154. strong.

  1155. It's you

  1156. he says.

  1157. It's the wounded

  1158. ones.

  1159. It's the humbled

  1160. and it's the

  1161. humiliated ones.

  1162. He says

  1163. you're going

  1164. to be

  1165. my remnant.

  1166. That is

  1167. he says

  1168. what is this

  1169. remnant?

  1170. He says

  1171. you're going

  1172. to be the core

  1173. you're going

  1174. to be the seed

  1175. you're going

  1176. to be the center

  1177. of the new

  1178. thing that I do.

  1179. you're going

  1180. to be like

  1181. the planting

  1182. that gives

  1183. birth to the

  1184. new tree.

  1185. You see

  1186. God's not

  1187. looking for the

  1188. strong

  1189. and God's

  1190. not looking

  1191. for the polished

  1192. and the put

  1193. together.

  1194. God's looking

  1195. for the weak.

  1196. God's coming

  1197. for the humble.

  1198. God's looking

  1199. for those

  1200. who know

  1201. what it's

  1202. like to

  1203. grieve.

  1204. Those

  1205. are who

  1206. will form

  1207. the remnant

  1208. the start

  1209. of his

  1210. renewed

  1211. people.

  1212. And that's

  1213. exactly

  1214. what God

  1215. did.

  1216. God

  1217. exiled his

  1218. people not

  1219. in the 8th

  1220. century but

  1221. in the 6th

  1222. century.

  1223. Eventually

  1224. Babylon came

  1225. and demolished

  1226. Jerusalem too

  1227. and carried

  1228. them off.

  1229. But then

  1230. in that

  1231. humbled and

  1232. humiliated

  1233. people,

  1234. that people

  1235. full of

  1236. shame and

  1237. grief,

  1238. he brought

  1239. a remnant

  1240. back.

  1241. They weren't

  1242. much.

  1243. In fact,

  1244. the temple

  1245. that they

  1246. rebuilt,

  1247. some people

  1248. remembered the

  1249. old temple

  1250. so they

  1251. wept because

  1252. it seemed

  1253. so insignificant

  1254. compared to

  1255. the former

  1256. one.

  1257. And they

  1258. struggled for

  1259. hundreds of

  1260. years just

  1261. to survive

  1262. as the

  1263. Persians

  1264. and then

  1265. the Greeks

  1266. and then

  1267. the Romans

  1268. as empire

  1269. after empire

  1270. continued to

  1271. oppress them

  1272. and to

  1273. shame them.

  1274. But then

  1275. at last

  1276. it came.

  1277. It came.

  1278. Just like

  1279. verse 8

  1280. of Micah 4

  1281. had said,

  1282. to you

  1283. shall it

  1284. come,

  1285. the former

  1286. dominion

  1287. shall come,

  1288. kingship for

  1289. the daughter

  1290. of Jerusalem.

  1291. At long

  1292. last the

  1293. kingdom arrived.

  1294. God's king

  1295. was born.

  1296. But this

  1297. king wasn't

  1298. what they

  1299. expected.

  1300. He wasn't

  1301. strong and

  1302. proud.

  1303. He was a

  1304. man of

  1305. sorrows

  1306. acquainted with

  1307. grief.

  1308. He was

  1309. humble and

  1310. came not to

  1311. be served

  1312. but to

  1313. serve and

  1314. to give his

  1315. life as a

  1316. ransom for

  1317. many.

  1318. You see,

  1319. friends,

  1320. this is how

  1321. much God

  1322. loves the

  1323. weak and

  1324. the humble

  1325. and the

  1326. broken.

  1327. In order

  1328. to rescue

  1329. his weak

  1330. people,

  1331. he became

  1332. weak.

  1333. In order

  1334. to redeem

  1335. his humiliated

  1336. people,

  1337. he humbled

  1338. himself.

  1339. In order

  1340. to save

  1341. his broken

  1342. people,

  1343. he was

  1344. broken.

  1345. And the

  1346. greatest mystery

  1347. of all,

  1348. in order

  1349. to save

  1350. his sinful

  1351. people,

  1352. Jesus

  1353. Christ

  1354. became sin

  1355. on the

  1356. cross.

  1357. Friend,

  1358. are you

  1359. weak and

  1360. filled with

  1361. sorrow today?

  1362. Has the

  1363. weight been

  1364. so heavy

  1365. that you've

  1366. considered just

  1367. giving up and

  1368. just walking

  1369. away?

  1370. Before you

  1371. do,

  1372. look again

  1373. upon the

  1374. God who

  1375. loves you.

  1376. And who

  1377. walked every

  1378. sorrow for

  1379. you and

  1380. even bore

  1381. the weight

  1382. of every

  1383. sin so

  1384. that in

  1385. your sorrows

  1386. you might

  1387. never be

  1388. alone.

  1389. So that in

  1390. your sorrows

  1391. you might

  1392. actually become

  1393. more like

  1394. him and

  1395. so that your

  1396. sorrows might

  1397. one day be

  1398. swallowed up in

  1399. victory and

  1400. he might wipe

  1401. every tear from

  1402. your eye.

  1403. Don't give

  1404. up.

  1405. Trust in

  1406. him.

  1407. And if you

  1408. placed your

  1409. faith in

  1410. him,

  1411. then keep

  1412. walking in

  1413. the name

  1414. of Jesus

  1415. our Lord.

  1416. He will

  1417. carry you

  1418. when you

  1419. feel like

  1420. you can't

  1421. take another

  1422. step.

  1423. He will

  1424. make you

  1425. strong even

  1426. when you

  1427. feel weak.

  1428. So this

  1429. is Micah's

  1430. message of

  1431. perseverance

  1432. and hope.

  1433. Hope,

  1434. not in

  1435. ourselves,

  1436. but in

  1437. God.

  1438. And hope

  1439. in God's

  1440. kingdom that

  1441. will gather

  1442. the nations

  1443. and establish

  1444. peace and

  1445. even strengthen

  1446. the weary.

  1447. glory.

  1448. And we

  1449. can know

  1450. that this

  1451. kingdom has

  1452. already begun.

  1453. It's already

  1454. begun because

  1455. the King,

  1456. the Lord

  1457. Jesus,

  1458. has come.

  1459. He came

  1460. the first

  1461. time to

  1462. live,

  1463. die,

  1464. and rise

  1465. again,

  1466. and he

  1467. will come

  1468. a second

  1469. time to

  1470. judge and

  1471. reign forever.

  1472. And on

  1473. that day,

  1474. when he

  1475. comes again,

  1476. all these

  1477. promises will

  1478. be fulfilled.

  1479. Fulfilled

  1480. not in

  1481. part,

  1482. but in

  1483. whole.

  1484. And all

  1485. these echoes

  1486. that we feel

  1487. and that we

  1488. experience now

  1489. will come

  1490. to their

  1491. fullness and

  1492. their

  1493. consummation

  1494. and their

  1495. fruition.

  1496. And Micah

  1497. tells us to

  1498. set our

  1499. eyes on

  1500. that day.

  1501. Keep that

  1502. day in

  1503. your sights.

  1504. Keep that

  1505. hope alive

  1506. in your

  1507. hearts.

  1508. And keep

  1509. walking in

  1510. the name of

  1511. the Lord

  1512. our God,

  1513. in the name

  1514. of Jesus,

  1515. in whom all

  1516. God's promises

  1517. are yes

  1518. and amen.

  1519. Let's pray

  1520. together.

  1521. Father,

  1522. we've

  1523. considered

  1524. the words

  1525. that you

  1526. spoke

  1527. through

  1528. Micah

  1529. so long

  1530. ago.

  1531. Now we

  1532. ask that

  1533. by your

  1534. spirit you

  1535. would work

  1536. this endurance

  1537. and hope

  1538. into our

  1539. hearts

  1540. through these

  1541. words.

  1542. Make the

  1543. hope of

  1544. the gospel,

  1545. the hope

  1546. of Christ

  1547. Jesus

  1548. crucified,

  1549. risen and

  1550. coming again,

  1551. the hope

  1552. of the new

  1553. heavens and

  1554. the new

  1555. earth.

  1556. Make this

  1557. hope real

  1558. to our

  1559. hearts,

  1560. spirit.

  1561. Make us

  1562. certain in

  1563. these promises

  1564. because Jesus

  1565. the son has

  1566. died and

  1567. has been

  1568. raised.

  1569. And in

  1570. hope, give

  1571. us strength

  1572. to walk,

  1573. to persevere,

  1574. knowing that

  1575. you will

  1576. surely complete,

  1577. bring to

  1578. full completion

  1579. the good

  1580. work that

  1581. you've

  1582. begun.

  1583. In Jesus'

  1584. name,

  1585. amen.
