  1. Good morning, church. Would you turn with me to Micah chapter 5. That's page 730 in the Pew Bible.

    Micah 5 chapter mention

  2. We will have Micah 5 on the screen above when I read it in just a minute, but let me encourage

  3. you to have it open before you as we walk through it together. Micah chapter 5, we're going to pick

    Micah 5 chapter mention

  4. up in verse 4. If you're joining us for the first time this morning, let me welcome you. We're glad

  5. you're here. Our practice at Trinity is to take a book of the Bible or to take a section of a book

  6. and just teach through it section by section, week by week. So if you're here celebrating graduation

  7. or commencement, this won't necessarily be a graduation-themed sermon, but we trust it will

  8. be spiritually edifying for you nonetheless. So let me pray, and then I'll read our text for us.

  9. Lord, what a powerful prayer we have just sung that you would speak to us.

  10. God, we confess that as Christians we often take it for granted that you are a speaking God,

  11. that you have spoken many times and in many ways through the prophets and through the apostles,

  12. and you have spoken in these last days through your Son, and you've given us your word, inspired

  13. and preserved to continue to speak to us. So Holy Spirit, we pray that you would come as we read

  14. and as we consider this text, that it would be your voice that we hear and your word that we heed,

  15. and God, your image into which we are conformed, that we might display your glory

  16. and praise your name as a church and as a people. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  17. All right, Micah chapter 5, we're going to pick up in verse 4 and read through the end of the chapter.

    Micah 5 chapter mention

  18. And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord,

  19. in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.

  20. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth,

  21. and he shall be their peace.

  22. When the Assyrian comes into our land and treads in our palaces,

  23. then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men.

  24. And they shall shepherd the land of Assyria with a sword and the land of Nimrod at its entrances,

  25. and he shall deliver us from the Assyrian when he comes into our land and treads within our border.

  26. Then the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the Lord,

  27. like showers on the grass, which delay not for a man nor wait for the children of man.

  28. And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations in the midst of many peoples,

  29. like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among the flocks of sheep,

  30. which when it goes through, treads down and tears in pieces, and there is none to deliver.

  31. Your hand shall be lifted up over your adversaries, and all your enemies shall be cut off.

  32. And in that day, declares the Lord, I will cut off your horses from among you,

  33. and will destroy your chariots, and I will cut off the cities of your land and throw down all

  34. your strongholds.

  35. And I will cut off sorceries from your hand, and you shall have no more tellers of fortunes.

  36. And I will cut off your carved images and your pillars from among you,

  37. and you shall bow down no more to the work of your hands.

  38. And I will root out your Asherah images from among you and destroy your cities.

  39. And in anger and wrath, I will execute vengeance on the nations that did not obey.

  40. So if you were here last week, you'll remember that the context of the passage that I just read

  41. is this.

  42. The context is this.

  43. God's people are in crisis.

  44. They're on the verge of defeat.

  45. But God promises that his long-awaited king will come, the shepherd king from the line of David,

  46. who, as verse 4 says, will come and will make his people secure,

  47. and who will himself be their peace.

  48. So the context is this message of great good news that God is going to come,

  49. that the shepherd king is going to come and rescue and preserve and be peace for his people.

  50. And we saw last week how this Old Testament prophecy was fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ,

  51. who was born in Bethlehem in David's royal line,

  52. and who came and who won a security and a peace for his people

  53. that was far beyond anything that we could have imagined.

  54. Because Christ came and triumphed over humanity's greatest enemies,

  55. sin and death and judgment.

  56. In the light of those great crises, those great distresses, our greatest enemies,

  57. Christ has come, and he is indeed our peace,

  58. eternally and forever for all who believe in him.

  59. Our sins are forgiven.

  60. We are reconciled to God.

  61. We who were enemies have been made adopted children in God's family.

  62. But then what?

  63. Is that where the story ends?

  64. What happens after we believe?

  65. What happens after we come to receive this peace that is Jesus himself?

  66. Do we just sort of wait around, hoping God will come again and just wait?

  67. You know, there have been times in the history of the church where we haven't really painted that picture very well.

  68. There has been a lot of focus on becoming a Christian, on conversion, on belief, and that's been good.

  69. But at times there's been a lack of focus on being a Christian.

  70. What does life look like after I come to believe?

  71. What should I expect the Christian life to be like?

  72. And this lack of focus or clarity has often been unfortunate.

  73. Because when we look at the New Testament, we see that the call to follow Christ,

  74. the call to follow this shepherd king that Micah foresaw,

  75. this call to follow Christ, is a great adventure.

  76. It's the rediscovery of our true humanity,

  77. of our purpose as God's image bearers,

  78. and our purpose as God's kingdom people.

  79. And I think that our passage from Micah today is about this very thing.

  80. Now, Micah is using the language of his day.

  81. He's using descriptions and images that his audience in the 8th century B.C.

  82. would understand under the Old Covenant.

  83. But Micah is describing what will happen after the king comes.

  84. When the king comes and wins his victory and becomes our peace, then what?

  85. Well, in our passage, Micah describes two things.

  86. First, he tells us that the reign of the Messiah extends through us.

  87. And second, that the reign of the Messiah extends in us.

  88. In other words, Christ advances his kingdom through us,

  89. and Christ advances his kingdom in us.

  90. So let's look at how Micah describes the first in verses 5 through 9,

  91. the first half of our passage.

  92. Christ extending his kingdom through us.

  93. Now, notice in verses 5 and 6 that it is the people themselves

  94. who participate in the pushing back of the enemy.

  95. When the Assyrian comes into our land and treads in our palaces, Micah says,

  96. then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men.

  97. That phrase, seven shepherds and eight princes, it's a figure of speech.

  98. It's a figure of speech as if to say, in that time there will be more than enough.

  99. There will be more than ample leadership.

  100. There will be more than ample participation from God's people to meet the call

  101. and to join their king on the field of battle.

  102. The picture is that the Messiah, the king, he won't sort of leave his people behind.

  103. They won't be forgotten.

  104. They won't be relegated to the sidelines.

  105. But they will be caught up to participate in his reign.

  106. He will make them his fellow regents.

  107. And they will join him in the advance of his liberating reign of peace.

  108. Now, as we come to the New Testament, as this passage finds its fulfillment in the New Testament

  109. and in the New Testament, new covenant people of God,

  110. we know from reading the New Testament that the real enemies of God's people are not flesh and blood.

  111. You know, the Assyrian in Micah 5 is sort of this picture of the ultimate enemy coming against us.

  112. But we know as we come to the New Testament that our real enemies are not flesh and blood.

  113. We aren't engaged in a geopolitical struggle.

  114. Our battle is against sin and death, against principalities and powers, as the Apostle Paul will say.

  115. And our warfare is not waged with swords or with guns, but by the Spirit of God,

  116. through the Word of God and prayer.

  117. It's a movement of liberation, setting people free from sin and death,

  118. setting people free from the things that have bound them and captured them and enslaved them

  119. so that they might be free to live for God as God's people.

  120. That's what the New Testament pictures as our great spiritual battle.

  121. But this advance of Christ's new covenant kingdom through his Spirit to all nations

  122. is still happening through the people of Christ, just as Micah saw it.

  123. When we believe in Jesus the Messiah, we're swept up into his story, where each of us has a part to play.

  124. When the Holy Spirit causes us to be born again through the preaching of the gospel and through faith,

  125. he not only unites us to Christ and floods our hearts with his peace,

  126. as Micah says, he will be our peace,

  127. but the Spirit also equips us with gifts,

  128. gifts to build up the church and to participate in the advance of Christ's kingdom in the world.

  129. And as this kingdom goes forth through the people,

  130. what is it we should expect?

  131. Well, in Micah 7 through 9,

  132. Micah gives us two images in verses 7 through 9,

  133. two images of what it will be like when the people of the king,

  134. this redeemed remnant,

  135. are spread throughout the nations in the midst of many peoples.

  136. Which, by the way, is exactly what the church is today, right?

  137. Spread throughout all nations and all peoples.

  138. Micah says, at that time,

  139. God's people, on the one hand,

  140. will be like dew,

  141. like showers on the grass.

  142. Imagine living in the arid, dry climate of Israel, of the Middle East,

  143. but then waking up early in the morning,

  144. and there's dew on the ground.

  145. There's showers on the grass.

  146. We felt some of those showers yesterday, didn't we?

  147. Because it just downpoured all day, right?

  148. But man, in the midst of a dry and weary land,

  149. Micah's saying there's going to be cool,

  150. even refreshing water to be found.

  151. And that dew, that shower,

  152. it's going to be God's people,

  153. spread throughout the nations.

  154. It's going to be you and me,

  155. spread throughout the nations.

  156. Micah says that's what the remnant's going to be like.

  157. They're going to be a blessing.

  158. Jesus, of course,

  159. will say something very similar.

  160. He will look at his disciples and say,

  161. you're the light of the world.

  162. You're the salt of the earth.

  163. You are meant to be a blessing.

  164. The Father sends his rain on the just and the unjust.

  165. So it's going to be with you.

  166. You will love your neighbor as yourself.

  167. In fact, you will even love your enemies

  168. and pray for those who persecute you.

  169. So on the one hand,

  170. the people will be like dew.

  171. They'll be like a blessing.

  172. But on the other hand,

  173. Micah says,

  174. they'll be like a young lion.

  175. Amidst the unbelieving nations,

  176. the scattered people of God

  177. will often be perceived as a threat,

  178. as a danger,

  179. as a curse.

  180. And indeed,

  181. there have been times

  182. when the growth of Christianity

  183. has led to social upheaval.

  184. You remember the book of Acts

  185. when the gospel was spreading

  186. in the city of Ephesus?

  187. So many believers

  188. were leaving their pagan lifestyles

  189. to become followers of Jesus

  190. that the local economy was being upended.

  191. Because the Ephesian economy

  192. revolved around temple worship

  193. and shrines,

  194. and there were silversmiths

  195. who made little trinkets

  196. that they would sell

  197. and make a lot of money,

  198. and it sort of made

  199. the wheels of the city turn.

  200. But as the number of Christians grew,

  201. and they forsook their pagan practices

  202. and became followers of the one Lord,

  203. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  204. suddenly it was a threat

  205. to business as usual.

  206. It disrupted the local economy

  207. so much so

  208. that some of the silversmiths

  209. in town instigated a riot

  210. to try to get the Christian leaders

  211. thrown out of town.

  212. In his second letter

  213. to the church in Corinth,

  214. Paul described the experience

  215. of Christians in this way.

  216. He says,

  217. Thanks be to God,

  218. who in Christ

  219. always leads us

  220. in triumphal procession.

  221. What a wonderful picture.

  222. Being led by the king

  223. in a procession of celebration.

  224. And Paul says,

  225. And through us

  226. spreads the fragrance

  227. of the knowledge of Christ

  228. everywhere.

  229. For we are the aroma

  230. of Christ to God

  231. among those who are being saved

  232. and among those who are perishing.

  233. And then Paul says this,

  234. To one,

  235. a fragrance

  236. from death

  237. to death.

  238. To the other,

  239. a fragrance

  240. from life

  241. to life.

  242. Paul was experiencing

  243. and his fellow Christians

  244. were experiencing

  245. what Micah foresaw,

  246. that the people of the Messiah

  247. would be both a blessing

  248. and a curse.

  249. They'd be the aroma of life

  250. and at times

  251. the aroma of death.

  252. They would be loved

  253. and they would be hated.

  254. Now at the end of this section

  255. in verse 9

  256. and at the end of the chapter

  257. in verse 15,

  258. Micah assures the people

  259. that they need not

  260. ultimately fear.

  261. That the enemies

  262. of God's people

  263. would not have the last word.

  264. That God would be

  265. their perfect protector

  266. and the ultimate judge.

  267. But in the meantime,

  268. as they participate

  269. in the advance

  270. of God's kingdom,

  271. they must expect

  272. to be both a blessing

  273. and a curse.

  274. To be like dew

  275. and like a young lion.

  276. So how might we apply

  277. all of this to us today?

  278. Well first,

  279. if it is true

  280. that God has a role

  281. for each of us

  282. in this kingdom work,

  283. and if it is true

  284. that this new covenant kingdom

  285. advances not through

  286. earthly weapons

  287. or earthly strategies

  288. but through the word of God,

  289. then all of us

  290. as followers of Jesus

  291. must be eager

  292. to immerse ourselves

  293. in that word of God.

  294. We must become

  295. more ardent students

  296. of scripture.

  297. Reading it,

  298. meditating on it,

  299. memorizing it.

  300. We must make a practice

  301. of saturating

  302. our minds and hearts

  303. with good biblical teaching.

  304. How else,

  305. as we are scattered

  306. among the nations,

  307. how else are we going

  308. to recognize God's ways

  309. and discern God's will

  310. and really inhabit

  311. this story

  312. into which

  313. he's called us

  314. each to play

  315. such an integral role?

  316. How else are we going

  317. to do that

  318. if not through a deep

  319. and constant engagement

  320. with God's word?

  321. Imagine being called

  322. into a theater troupe,

  323. right?

  324. Being called to play a part

  325. in a play.

  326. And the director

  327. hands you the script

  328. and you say,

  329. thanks,

  330. but I got this.

  331. And you walk out

  332. onto the stage

  333. and you have no idea

  334. what your part is.

  335. You have no idea

  336. what the story is,

  337. right?

  338. Instead,

  339. God hands us

  340. the script

  341. and says,

  342. this is the play.

  343. This is how you're

  344. to live this out

  345. in the midst

  346. of the nations.

  347. So soak yourself

  348. in it,

  349. immerse yourself

  350. in it.

  351. And then when there

  352. come those times

  353. when you have to

  354. maybe improvise

  355. because there isn't

  356. an exact verse

  357. that you can quote,

  358. you'll be so saturated

  359. in the story

  360. and the ways

  361. and the word of God

  362. that you'll be able

  363. to do it faithfully.

  364. So as we face

  365. the kingdom task

  366. of our own day,

  367. we must recommit

  368. ourselves to a deep

  369. and joyful saturation

  370. in the Bible.

  371. But second,

  372. as we face

  373. the kingdom task

  374. of our own day,

  375. we have to be,

  376. we have to be

  377. humble enough

  378. to bless

  379. and at the same time

  380. bold enough

  381. to offend.

  382. We have to be due

  383. and we have to be lions

  384. at the same time.

  385. And of course,

  386. humanly speaking,

  387. that sounds impossible,

  388. right?

  389. Most people are either

  390. one or the other,

  391. you know?

  392. You have,

  393. you probably have friends,

  394. you probably have friends

  395. who are very gentle

  396. and very humble

  397. and they'll always agree

  398. with you

  399. and they'll always do

  400. something good for you

  401. even if you've treated

  402. them poorly,

  403. right?

  404. Then you have other friends

  405. who are just like,

  406. they're always telling

  407. you the truth

  408. and they're always

  409. stepping on your toes

  410. and you like them for it

  411. but you kind of

  412. don't like them for it,

  413. you know?

  414. And then you realize

  415. like, oh my goodness,

  416. I'm probably one of those.

  417. I'm probably one of those too.

  418. You know,

  419. I wonder which one I am,

  420. you know?

  421. Most people kind of

  422. humanly are one or the other

  423. and the truth is

  424. most churches

  425. and most communities

  426. usually kind of tip

  427. one way or the other.

  428. Right?

  429. We're either really good

  430. at boldness

  431. or really good

  432. at humility.

  433. We're really good

  434. in a willingness to bless

  435. or we're really good

  436. at a willingness

  437. to offend.

  438. But Micah says,

  439. you'll need to be both.

  440. You'll need to be both.

  441. And that's going to be

  442. the sign,

  443. one of the signs,

  444. that you're really

  445. the people of the Messiah,

  446. of the shepherd king.

  447. So how do we get

  448. to that human impossibility

  449. of being humble enough

  450. to bless

  451. and yet bold enough

  452. to offend?

  453. Well, the reality

  454. is we get there

  455. through a constant engagement

  456. and an ongoing

  457. internalization

  458. of the grace

  459. and peace

  460. that Jesus is for us.

  461. Because the humility

  462. comes

  463. when we grasp

  464. deeper and deeper

  465. and deeper

  466. that we are sinners

  467. saved by sheer grace.

  468. That Christ's love

  469. and mercy

  470. extended to us

  471. when we did nothing

  472. to deserve it.

  473. In fact,

  474. just the opposite.

  475. We defended God

  476. and lived as if we wanted

  477. nothing to do with Him.

  478. God supports our life

  479. with every second,

  480. every moment

  481. we're awake

  482. and alive

  483. and in being

  484. is because of God's

  485. sheer goodness

  486. and power

  487. and mercy.

  488. And yet we live

  489. 99.99%

  490. of our days

  491. completely ignoring

  492. that fact.

  493. And yet

  494. God sends His Son

  495. in mercy

  496. to love us

  497. and to die for us

  498. and to forgive us

  499. and to welcome us home

  500. when we've done nothing

  501. to deserve it.

  502. And so that makes us

  503. incredibly humble

  504. because we know

  505. that it's only by God's grace

  506. that we're saved.

  507. We can't work our way

  508. out of that debt.

  509. But at the same time

  510. the grace of Christ

  511. also makes us bold.

  512. It humbles us

  513. but it also makes us

  514. bold

  515. like lions.

  516. Why?

  517. Because as we come

  518. to know God's love

  519. and acceptance

  520. and His favor

  521. suddenly when we come

  522. to know God's acceptance

  523. and rest in it

  524. and relish it

  525. that frees us

  526. from the fear

  527. of losing

  528. the world's acceptance.

  529. We have the most

  530. important acceptance

  531. and favor

  532. in the universe.

  533. If the King

  534. has made me His own

  535. and given me

  536. His favor

  537. what difference

  538. does it make

  539. if I happen

  540. to lose

  541. the world's favor?

  542. It may be costly

  543. but I have

  544. riches

  545. that cannot compare.

  546. And so we mustn't

  547. ever lose sight

  548. of the grace

  549. of the gospel

  550. where this whole passage

  551. starts

  552. He will be our peace.

  553. That's the only thing

  554. that's going to make us

  555. humble enough

  556. to bless

  557. and at the same time

  558. bold enough

  559. to be willing

  560. to offend.

  561. So this is Micah's

  562. first answer

  563. to what happens

  564. after we believe.

  565. when we come

  566. to participate

  567. in the Messiah's

  568. peace through faith

  569. we also become

  570. participants

  571. in the advance

  572. of His kingdom.

  573. The kingdom

  574. of the Messiah

  575. advances

  576. through us.

  577. But the second part

  578. is this

  579. the kingdom

  580. of the Messiah

  581. advances

  582. in us.

  583. This is verses

  584. 10 through 15.

  585. Now before we look

  586. at the main point

  587. of those verses

  588. it's good to see

  589. again how verse 15

  590. the last verse

  591. of our chapter

  592. like verse 9

  593. is a reminder

  594. that God will

  595. ultimately protect

  596. His people

  597. and God will

  598. ultimately be

  599. the perfect judge

  600. of all.

  601. And you know

  602. even though that

  603. strikes our cultural

  604. sensibilities

  605. pretty harshly

  606. God being the

  607. perfect judge

  608. it's actually

  609. good news

  610. because if God

  611. is the perfect judge

  612. if God is the judge

  613. and that means

  614. I don't have to be

  615. I don't have to be

  616. the one who's trying

  617. to right every wrong.

  618. I can follow

  619. Christ faithfully

  620. and actually forgive

  621. and actually be merciful

  622. knowing that God

  623. will one day

  624. put everything to right.

  625. But this is also

  626. sobering news

  627. for those who are

  628. outside of Christ.

  629. And verse 15

  630. is an urgent call

  631. to flee to Christ

  632. and find forgiveness

  633. and peace with God.

  634. If that's you today

  635. if you're outside

  636. of Christ

  637. then don't delay.

  638. There is full

  639. forgiveness and mercy

  640. for everyone

  641. who turns

  642. and trusts in Christ

  643. no matter what

  644. your background

  645. no matter what

  646. your long list

  647. of failures

  648. and guilt

  649. or shame is.

  650. There's full

  651. forgiveness and mercy

  652. for everyone

  653. who turns

  654. and trusts in Christ.

  655. The judgment for sin

  656. fell on Him

  657. at the cross

  658. so that all

  659. who trust in Him

  660. need never face

  661. the judgment

  662. their sins deserve.

  663. And God offers

  664. this forgiveness

  665. free of charge

  666. to you today.

  667. So believe in Christ

  668. and be saved.

  669. That's where

  670. our passage ends.

  671. But the bulk

  672. of this second half

  673. of verses 10

  674. through 14

  675. the second half

  676. of our text

  677. the bulk of it

  678. is about what God

  679. is going to do

  680. in His redeemed people.

  681. In other words

  682. the second half

  683. of our passage

  684. is largely about

  685. how God plans

  686. to purify

  687. His redeemed people

  688. to make them

  689. increasingly holy

  690. to increasingly

  691. transform them

  692. into His image

  693. and likeness.

  694. And this happens

  695. Micah says

  696. as God

  697. cuts off

  698. or casts away

  699. the things

  700. that the people

  701. depend on

  702. instead of Him.

  703. In verses 10 and 11

  704. God says

  705. He's going to

  706. cut off

  707. their dependence

  708. on military might

  709. on chariots

  710. on strongholds

  711. on citadels

  712. I'm going to

  713. cut those things away.

  714. And then in verse 12

  715. God says

  716. He's going to

  717. cut off

  718. their dependence

  719. on fortune tellers

  720. and sorcerers

  721. and trying to

  722. control or

  723. manipulate

  724. their surroundings

  725. through their

  726. human machinations.

  727. He says

  728. I'm going to

  729. remove that

  730. and cut that

  731. off from you.

  732. And then in verses

  733. 13 through 14

  734. God says

  735. He'll cut off

  736. their dependence

  737. on idols

  738. and carved images.

  739. He says

  740. I'm going to

  741. remove those things

  742. from your midst.

  743. And you know

  744. as you look at

  745. the Old Testament

  746. these were the

  747. constant pitfalls

  748. for the Old Testament

  749. people of God.

  750. They were constantly

  751. tempted to run

  752. to military power

  753. or to run to

  754. false gods

  755. to protect them

  756. and keep them safe.

  757. But God wants

  758. His people to rely

  759. on Him alone

  760. and He wants them

  761. to be set apart

  762. from the other nations

  763. to be different

  764. from how they operate.

  765. All the other nations

  766. operated along those lines.

  767. Let's build a big military

  768. and let's build

  769. a bunch of statues

  770. to God's

  771. and then we're

  772. going to be safe

  773. and then we're

  774. going to be victorious.

  775. But God says

  776. that's not what

  777. my people are

  778. going to be like.

  779. God wants them

  780. to be set apart

  781. from the other nations

  782. to be distinct

  783. which is what

  784. the word holy means.

  785. It means set apart

  786. distinct.

  787. Other nations

  788. depend on chariots

  789. and citadels

  790. not God's people.

  791. Other nations

  792. depend on idol worship

  793. engraving images

  794. not God's people.

  795. They would be different.

  796. They would be set apart.

  797. They would be holy

  798. like God is holy.

  799. You see

  800. when we become Christians

  801. when we enter

  802. into a saving relationship

  803. with Jesus

  804. the Messiah

  805. it is true

  806. that all of our sins

  807. are forgiven.

  808. The penalty

  809. for our sins

  810. is taken away

  811. because of Christ's

  812. death on the cross.

  813. But the truth is

  814. is that

  815. many of our sinful

  816. tendencies

  817. and patterns

  818. and habits

  819. still remain.

  820. And God's plan

  821. is to remake us

  822. and refashion us

  823. over time

  824. through his Holy Spirit

  825. to make us

  826. ultimately

  827. more like Christ.

  828. Our sins are forgiven

  829. but now

  830. he's actually going to

  831. work that out

  832. in us

  833. and through us

  834. by his Holy Spirit

  835. to make us

  836. more like Christ

  837. in how we think

  838. and how we act

  839. and how we speak

  840. and how ultimately

  841. what we love

  842. and what we depend on.

  843. Jesus Christ

  844. lived his life

  845. in complete dependence

  846. on nothing

  847. but the love

  848. of his heavenly Father.

  849. He lived

  850. in complete dependence

  851. on the love

  852. of his heavenly Father.

  853. The love of the Father

  854. was completely

  855. and utterly

  856. sufficient for him.

  857. So much so

  858. that even in the

  859. Garden of Gethsemane

  860. when Jesus was faced

  861. with the terrible

  862. prospect of the cross

  863. Christ was willing

  864. to say

  865. but not my will Father

  866. your will be done.

  867. And this is where

  868. God wants to bring us

  869. to the place

  870. of utter freedom

  871. and utter liberty

  872. in God's love

  873. dependent on nothing else

  874. so that we might

  875. be able to say

  876. from the depths

  877. of our being

  878. God thy will be done.

  879. I'm depending

  880. on nothing else

  881. but you.

  882. So brothers and sisters

  883. how has God

  884. recently been at work

  885. in your life

  886. to make you holy?

  887. And how are you

  888. pursuing this holiness?

  889. Are there obvious sins

  890. that you need to confess

  891. and get rid of

  892. to cut off?

  893. Do you need the help

  894. of fellow Christians

  895. or a support group

  896. to fight a sinful

  897. addiction or habit?

  898. If you have sins

  899. you need to confess

  900. confess them friends.

  901. If you have sins

  902. where you need help

  903. reach out for help.

  904. Come talk to me

  905. or any of the elders

  906. and we can point you

  907. in the right direction

  908. so that you can

  909. pursue this path

  910. of becoming

  911. more liberated

  912. more free

  913. more holy

  914. like Christ.

  915. Perhaps you've been

  916. in a season

  917. of change

  918. or of loss.

  919. perhaps it feels

  920. like there are things

  921. that God

  922. has been

  923. cutting off

  924. or cutting away

  925. from your life.

  926. No doubt

  927. those things

  928. have been painful.

  929. But you know

  930. God will often

  931. use these painful

  932. seasons

  933. of cutting away

  934. to produce

  935. a deeper

  936. spiritual growth

  937. in us.

  938. Remember Jesus'

  939. words in John 15?

  940. John 15

  941. Jesus says

  942. I'm the true vine

  943. you're the branches

  944. if we abide in him

  945. we bear much fruit

  946. and Jesus says

  947. as we bear that fruit

  948. God is going to

  949. continue to prune us.

  950. He's going to continue

  951. to prune us

  952. why?

  953. So that we might

  954. become even more fruitful

  955. and that pruning

  956. that cutting away

  957. is never easy

  958. or joyful

  959. at the time.

  960. Sometimes it feels

  961. like a piece of us

  962. is literally being

  963. taken out.

  964. But the result

  965. is a deeper

  966. dependence on God

  967. and a deeper

  968. intimacy with him.

  969. And as our roots

  970. push deeper

  971. and deeper

  972. into God

  973. and God alone

  974. we find ourselves

  975. from the inside out

  976. being more

  977. and more like

  978. Jesus

  979. more and more

  980. who God created

  981. us to be.

  982. You see friends

  983. this is how much

  984. the Father loves us.

  985. He gives his son

  986. for us

  987. to reconcile us

  988. to himself

  989. to be our peace

  990. and then he continues

  991. to pursue us

  992. never resting

  993. in that pursuit

  994. until we begin

  995. to reflect

  996. more and more

  997. of his character

  998. of his wisdom

  999. of his grace

  1000. of his glory

  1001. of his joy.

  1002. And so here is

  1003. Micah's vision

  1004. for the people

  1005. for the people

  1006. who've come to know

  1007. the Messiah

  1008. and his peace.

  1009. What's the story?

  1010. What's the journey

1011. that God has for us?

  1012. God doesn't just want

  1013. to advance his kingdom

  1014. through us.

  1015. He wants his kingdom

  1016. to be embodied

  1017. in us.

1018. He wants to purify us

  1019. and make us holy.

1020. He wants to make us

  1021. like his son.

  1022. And isn't this

  1023. the greatest privilege

  1024. and joy

  1025. that we could imagine?

1026. not just to be used

  1027. by God

  1028. but to become

  1029. living images

  1030. of God's own character

  1031. to become like God.

  1032. To have everything

  1033. false

  1034. and everything

  1035. destructive

  1036. cut away

  1037. and to have

  1038. our true self

  1039. emerge.

1040. We live in a time

  1041. when we all

  1042. want to find

  1043. that authentic self

  1044. don't we?

  1045. And God says

  1046. I'm going to help

  1047. you find that.

1048. It's not going to be

  1049. the path you think.

  1050. It's going to be

  1051. the path

  1052. through the grace

  1053. of Christ for you.

  1054. Cutting away

  1055. the things that are

  1056. false and destructive.

  1057. So that the self

  1058. that's created

  1059. by God

  1060. in Christ Jesus

  1061. that self

  1062. that fully known

  1063. fully loved

  1064. fully free self

  1065. can begin to emerge.

  1066. Where you'll be free

  1067. not just from sin

  1068. but you'll be free

  1069. for God.

  1070. free for God

  1071. as Michael will say

1072. in the chapter to come

  1073. free to do justice

  1074. free to love kindness

  1075. and free to walk

  1076. humbly with our God.

  1077. Let's pray together.

  1078. Father we ask

  1079. that you would do

  1080. this work

  1081. through us

  1082. and in us

  1083. that you've portrayed

  1084. and pictured

  1085. through Micah's prophecy.

  1086. Lord help us

  1087. to take joy

  1088. in the work

  1089. that you're doing

  1090. through us.

  1091. Help us to find

  1092. deep joy

  1093. in the work

  1094. that you're doing

  1095. in us.

  1096. Lord and help us

  1097. as a church

  1098. to be doing

  1099. these things

  1100. together

  1101. in the fellowship

  1102. of this family

  1103. that you've brought

  1104. us into

  1105. with Christ

  1106. as our head

  1107. as our good shepherd.

  1108. Help us to open

  1109. up our hands

  1110. to you God

  1111. and say

  1112. thy will be done

  1113. and then to find

  1114. our place

  1115. in this great

  1116. and this thrilling

  1117. story of redemption

  1118. that you've made

  1119. us a part of.

  1120. We pray this

  1121. in Jesus' name.

  1122. Amen.
