  1. Well, good morning, friends. Let's turn to God's Word. So, would you turn with me to Micah chapter 6?

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  2. We are picking up our series in Micah this morning in verse 9.

  3. In verse 9 of Micah chapter 6, and we're going to look through Micah 7, verse 7.

Micah 6 chapter mention Micah 7:7

  4. As we come to the Bible this morning, it's good to remember that the chapter and verse numbers

  5. in our kind of English translations were not part of the original text. Those were added later.

  6. So, sometimes the flow of thought in a biblical passage doesn't always line up exactly with our

  7. chapter and verse numbers. And that's the case with our passage today. So, we're going to pick up with

  8. the second half of chapter 6 and then go into the first half of chapter 7. That's page 731 in the

  9. Pew Bible if you want to follow along there. Kevin will have it on the screens as we read through it

  10. the first time, but it'd be good to have it open and just refer to it as we look at the text throughout

  11. our time together. So, Micah 6, 9 through 7, 7. Let me pray as we come to God's Word.

  12. Our Father in heaven, we draw near to you this morning with confidence because, as we have sung,

  13. we have a great high priest, our Lord Jesus Christ, who stands, Father, at your right hand,

  14. interceding for us, making a way for us sinners to draw near to your throne. And Father, as we draw

  15. near in the name of Jesus through his work, we find that your throne is a throne of grace,

  16. a throne of forgiveness, a throne of mercy. So, we come to your throne of grace and we ask for your help

  17. now as we come to your Word. Would your Holy Spirit, who inspired this Word, be working in our hearts

  18. to bring conviction about these things, a deeper sense of these things in our hearts and our lives,

  19. so that we can love you and love one another more fully as you have created us to do. We pray this in

  20. Jesus' name. Amen. All right, Micah 6, 9. The voice of the Lord cries to the city, and it is sound wisdom

  21. to fear your name. Hear of the rod and of him who appointed it. Can I forget any longer the treasures

  22. of wickedness in the house of the wicked and the scant measure that is accursed? Shall I acquit the man

  23. with wicked scales and with a bag of deceitful weights? Your rich men are full of violence.

  24. Your inhabitants speak lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

  25. Therefore, I strike you with a grievous blow, making you desolate because of your sins.

  26. You shall eat but not be satisfied, and there shall be hunger within you. You shall put away but not

  27. preserve, and what you preserve I will give to the sword. You shall sow but not reap. You shall tread

  28. olives but not anoint yourselves with oil. You shall tread grapes but not drink wine. For you have kept

  29. the statutes of Omri and all the works of the house of Ahab, and you have walked in their councils.

  30. That I may make you a desolation and your inhabitants a hissing, so you shall bear the scorn of my people.

  31. Woe is me! For I have become, as when the summer fruit has been gathered, as when the grapes have been

  32. gleaned, there is no cluster to eat, no first ripe fig that my soul desires. The godly has perished from the

  33. earth, and there is no one upright among mankind. They all lie in wait for blood, and each hunts the

  34. other with a net. Their hands are on what is evil to do it well. The prince and the judge ask for a bribe,

  35. and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul. Thus they weave it together. The best of them

  36. is like a briar, the most upright of them a thorn hedge. The day of your watchmen, of your punishment

  37. has come. Now their confusion is at hand. Put no trust in a neighbor. Have no confidence in a friend.

  38. Guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your arms. For the son treats the father with

  39. contempt. The daughter rises up against her mother. The daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

  40. A man's enemies are the men of his own house. But as for me, I will look to the Lord. I will wait

  41. for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. Well, it's often been said that God's word

  42. is often like a mirror. God's word shows us not just what God is like, but like a mirror it holds

  43. up before us what we are really like. Shows us our true state. Now we live in a time when authenticity,

  44. you might say, we live in a time when authenticity, when knowing and kind of living out of what we

  45. perceive to be our true self, we live in a time when that's seen as one of, if not the highest virtue

  46. we could attain, right? And scripture comes to us and says that it can not just help us in that

  47. pursuit, but it can actually bring us to the place of deepest authenticity. It can actually show us who

  48. we really are. Because here in scripture, here is our creator holding up before us this mirror,

  49. showing us who we really are, showing us who we are really meant to be.

  50. And the first part of the answer that the Bible gives about who we really are, as it holds this

  51. mirror up to us, is that we are created in God's own image. That God has created us in his own image.

  52. That we as human beings are not simply the product of time and matter and chance, but that we're

  53. purposefully made and we're actually wonderfully made to reflect God's very self.

  54. So the Bible comes to us and says that there's almost no greater dignity that we could imagine.

  55. And we have it, that we're made in God's image.

  56. But the Bible doesn't stop there. The Bible also explains what went wrong.

  57. Because after all, things aren't the way they're supposed to be. We're not the way we're supposed to be.

  58. You know, we were created in God's image to love him and to love one another, and yet we don't love God

  59. with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. And we don't love our neighbor as ourself.

  60. And this problem is what the Bible calls sin.

  61. So if we're really going to understand ourselves according to the mirror of God's word,

  62. we have to hold these two things together.

  63. That we're created in God's image with incomparable beauty and worth,

  64. and we're also fallen and sinful. It's as if we're kind of bent in on ourselves.

  65. And we don't love the things that we're supposed to love, at least not rightly.

  66. And we don't desire the things that we're supposed to desire, at least not in the right order,

  67. in the right proportion.

  68. And of course, it's that second part of what the Bible shows us,

  69. the part about sin,

  70. that we don't really like all that much

  71. as humans.

  72. And you know, for the past few hundred years, culturally and intellectually,

  73. that's the part that we've been trying to kind of write out of our human story.

  74. We've been trying to understand ourselves without that critical piece.

  75. But you know, trying to understand ourselves,

  76. trying to understand humanity without a robust understanding of sin,

  77. it just doesn't work.

  78. You know, imagine going to see a counselor

  79. because you're trying to work through some anger issues.

  80. You know, you always find yourself short-tempered or irritable.

  81. You're even losing your cool at times, you know, at work or with your kids.

  82. You just don't know where it's coming from.

  83. So you're like, man, I gotta go see a therapist.

  84. So you go to the counselor,

  85. and the counselor starts to ask you some questions.

  86. And you know, it comes to light that you've kind of suffered

  87. all these terrible losses in your life.

  88. And you've just kind of ignored them.

  89. You haven't really squared up with them and acknowledged those losses

  90. and really grieved them.

  91. And then your counselor one day looks at you and says,

  92. you know, I think I might know a part of where your anger's coming from.

  93. I think you need to grieve these very real losses in your life.

  94. But then what if in response, you just shut the whole conversation down?

  95. You're just like, no, no, no, that's not true.

  96. None of those things are real.

  97. None of those things matter.

  98. And you just sort of charge on, right?

  99. Well, obviously, you're never going to understand yourself or your anger

  100. unless you come to terms with those things, right?

  101. But that's a bit like what we've been trying to do as humans

  102. when we try to understand our humanity

  103. without any reference to our fallen human nature.

  104. You know, we want to understand what makes us tick

  105. and why we do the things we do.

  106. But we keep turning a blind eye to this very real,

  107. very glaring part of our own history

  108. of what makes us who we are,

  109. whether we like it or not.

  110. And so much of what God commissioned the Old Testament prophets to do

  111. was to confront people with this reality of their sin.

  112. The gift of the prophets is that they won't let us keep living in self-delusion.

  113. They won't let us continue to hide behind our veils of inauthenticity.

  114. They call us out into the open.

  115. And that's what our passage here in Micah, chapter 6 and chapter 7, is doing.

    Micah 6 chapter mention

  116. Micah's holding this mirror up to God's people.

  117. And through Micah, God's showing his people their sin.

  118. And of course, we can look into this mirror and we can turn away.

  119. We can turn away like the person who refuses to listen to their counselor,

  120. refuses to deal with all the hard and painful stuff in their life.

  121. We can just run away.

  122. But how foolish would that be?

  123. Micah says right at the start of our passage,

  124. the voice of the Lord cries to the city.

  125. And then he says,

  126. it's sound wisdom to fear your name.

  127. It's sound wisdom to be in awe of God

  128. and to listen to what he says.

  129. So we can choose.

  130. We can choose the path of foolishness

  131. or we can choose the path of wisdom.

  132. Why don't we look at what Micah has to say?

  133. Why don't we look at what Micah has to say to us about our sin?

  134. What would be wise for us to listen to and to understand?

  135. Well, our text actually has three parts.

  136. And in the first part,

  137. Micah shows us the gravity of our sin.

  138. The gravity of our sin.

  139. This is verses 9 through 16 of chapter 16.

  140. This is the second half of chapter 16.

  141. Micah drills down into the gravity of our sin.

  142. And again, as we said,

  143. in this section, Micah holds up a mirror to his contemporaries.

  144. And what shows up in that mirror as he holds it up?

  145. Well, in verses 10 through 12,

  146. kind of the first part of this section,

  147. we see that the problem that shows up

  148. is what we might call economic injustice.

  149. Commercial dishonesty.

  150. Specifically, in the marketplace,

  151. the merchants and business owners,

  152. they're using false scales and false weights

  153. to cheat and to deceive

  154. and to get rich at other people's expense.

  155. Imagine coming to the marketplace

  156. after a long week of work

  157. or maybe even a long season of work,

  158. of the harvest season.

  159. You've come with what you've grown

  160. and harvested on your farm

  161. that you and your family have spent

  162. weeks and months gathering

  163. and packing up and bringing into the city.

  164. And you put your produce on the scale

  165. and it reads 500 pounds.

  166. So the merchant pays you 500 pounds worth,

  167. you know, whatever that would be.

  168. But what if the scale was rigged?

  169. You know, what if the scale was rigged

  170. to actually read 20% less than the actual weight?

  171. You know, the scale said 500 pounds,

  172. but it was supposed to read what?

  173. 600 pounds.

  174. But you only got paid for 500.

  175. And what if that just kept happening again and again?

  176. And all the merchant class are working together.

  177. So you can't go to another stall

  178. and sell there instead

  179. because they're working the same system.

  180. And then you go and you complain to the authorities,

  181. but you realize they're getting a part of the profits.

  182. So they just ignore your complaints

  183. and say, forget about it.

  184. That's just business as usual.

  185. Just take what you can get and be happy.

  186. But what does God say?

  187. Does he say forget about it?

  188. It's just business as usual?

  189. No.

  190. God says, can I forget?

  191. Can I forget these treasures of wickedness?

  192. Shall I acquit the man with wicked scales?

  193. And the answer is no.

  194. It's impossible for God to forget or to acquit

  195. because of who God is,

  196. because of his holiness

  197. and God's utter truthfulness and integrity.

  198. He cannot forget

  199. and he will not acquit.

  200. The way that they're cheating each other

  201. and stealing and lying from one another,

  202. all of this is a deep offense

  203. to the God who created them

  204. and who created humans in his image, remember.

  205. These humans that are being cheated

  206. and scammed and oppressed,

  207. they bear God's image.

  208. It's an offense to God to treat them that way.

  209. And God says he will not allow it to continue forever.

  210. Now, if you and I were to walk the streets of Jerusalem with Micah,

  211. would we see what God sees?

  212. Would we notice what God notices?

  213. Or would we be just like the upper class?

  214. Would we just shrug our shoulders and say,

  215. that's how business is done.

  216. What can you do?

  217. You see, the funny thing,

  218. the tragic thing for us as humans

  219. is that we have a tendency

  220. to not take sin very seriously.

  221. There are all sorts,

  222. in whatever culture we find ourselves in,

  223. there's all sorts of just respectable sins,

  224. you know,

  225. things that just culturally are like,

  226. that's fine.

  227. That's just the way it's done.

  228. Things that we just don't think are all that bad.

  229. But Micah here wants us to see the gravity of sin.

  230. It's not just skimming a little off the top.

  231. It's not just how business is done.

  232. It's lies and violence

  233. against a person made in God's image.

  234. Now,

  235. maybe you aren't engaged

  236. in corrupt financial practices.

  237. But are you and I

  238. willing to take a look

  239. at how we go about our work

  240. and how we approach our finances

  241. and ask,

  242. God, is there anything here I'm missing?

  243. You know, I read a statistic this week

  244. that something like

  245. 10% of the world's population

  246. owns 90% of the world's wealth.

  247. Is there something we're missing?

  248. Am I excusing or minimizing something

  249. that's actually dishonoring to you, God?

  250. Sin is serious.

  251. And we have to treat it that way.

  252. And in verses 13 through 16,

  253. God shows the people

  254. that judgment's coming.

  255. And the key word in verse 13 and verse 16

  256. that kind of bookends

  257. this second half of our section here,

  258. verses 13 and 16,

  259. is the word desolation.

  260. You know, the people keep amassing wealth

  261. through their unjust practices,

  262. but God says the day is coming

  263. when you'll be desolate,

  264. when you'll be empty.

  265. You shall eat and not be satisfied,

  266. and there shall be hunger within you.

  267. You shall put away, right?

  268. You'll save things,

  269. but it won't preserve.

  270. And what you try to preserve,

  271. I'm going to give to the sword.

  272. And what you shall sow,

  273. but not reap.

  274. You'll tread olives,

  275. but not anoint yourselves with oil.

  276. You'll tread grapes,

  277. but not drink wine.

  278. It's just images of futility,

  279. of the created order

  280. not working the way it's supposed to work.

  281. Things breaking down.

  282. And for the Old Testament people of God,

  283. what this meant was exile.

  284. All the wealth,

  285. all the fields,

  286. all the pleasure that they had amassed,

  287. God said it will collapse in a day

  288. when Babylon comes

  289. and topples Jerusalem.

  290. That's what verse 16

  291. is getting at at the end.

  292. You might have wondered

  293. who Omri and Ahab are.

  294. Well, Omri and Ahab

  295. were wicked rulers

  296. from a generation earlier

  297. in Israel's northern kingdom.

  298. The people in the north

  299. a generation ago

  300. followed in those king's footsteps,

  301. and God judged them,

  302. and they were sent into exile.

  303. And here Micah is saying

  304. to the people

  305. a generation later

  306. in the southern kingdom,

  307. you're just like them.

  308. You might think you're better,

  309. but you're not.

  310. Your sins are just as serious,

  311. just as grave,

  312. and exile will come for you too.

  313. How about us, friends?

  314. Do we think sin

  315. is that serious?

  316. Serious enough

  317. that God would be right

  318. to strip everything away from us

  319. because of it?

  320. Do we think sin is that grave,

  321. that serious,

  322. that God is right to judge it?

  323. You know, this is perhaps

  324. the greatest sign

  325. that we don't really think

  326. sin is all that serious,

  327. all that grave,

  328. is that we don't actually think

  329. God is within his rights

  330. to judge it.

  331. We think God should just overlook it

  332. and just forget about it.

  333. But if sin really is

  334. an offense against God,

  335. the infinitely holy

  336. and infinitely loving God,

  337. the infinitely worthy God,

  338. and if sin is against

  339. God's image bearers,

  340. then we have to agree

  341. that the penalty for sin

  342. must be massive.

  343. the just penalty

  344. for sinning

  345. against an infinitely

  346. worthy God

  347. is an infinitely

  348. weighty penalty.

  349. So where do we go?

  350. Where do we go to find help?

  351. How do we get out

  352. from under that weight?

  353. Right?

  354. Well, that brings us

  355. to the second part

  356. of our passage.

  357. Chapter 7,

  358. verses 1 through 6.

  359. After showing us

  360. the gravity of sin,

  361. Micah goes on

  362. in this next section

  363. to show us

  364. the extent of sin,

  365. the extent of it.

  366. In verse 1 of chapter 7,

  367. Micah begins

  368. with sort of a short allegory,

  369. with a short kind

  370. of illustration.

  371. He sort of pictures himself

  372. like a harvester

  373. going out into the fields

  374. looking for leftover fruit

  375. along the edges

  376. of the field.

  377. You see,

  378. in ancient Israel,

  379. the harvesters

  380. were commanded

  381. to sort of leave fruit

  382. along the edges

  383. of the field,

  384. to leave some of the crops

  385. and produce

  386. along the edges

  387. of the fields

  388. so that anyone afterwards

  389. could go and kind of harvest

  390. and gather something

  391. for themselves.

  392. But when Micah

  393. goes out into the field,

  394. he finds nothing.

  395. It's all gone.

  396. There's not a single fig

  397. to be found.

  398. And then in verses 2 through 4,

  399. he gives the interpretation

  400. of this short allegory.

  401. And what is the interpretation?

  402. What's the word picture

  403. all about?

  404. Verse 2,

  405. The godly have perished

  406. from the earth,

  407. and there is no one upright

  408. among mankind.

  409. In other words,

  410. Micah is looking for someone,

  411. for anyone,

  412. who might be able to help.

  413. Someone who's truly upright.

  414. Someone who's genuinely righteous.

  415. And he finds no one.

  416. In other words,

  417. what Micah sees

  418. is that sin

  419. isn't just a serious problem.

  420. It's everybody's problem.

  421. Sin reaches into

  422. every human structure,

  423. every human relationship,

  424. every human heart.

  425. Micah goes on to paint

  426. a pretty bleak picture

  427. of what the powerful people

  428. are doing in his day,

  429. the princes and judges,

  430. the ones who are supposed

  431. to be protecting the people

  432. and upholding justice.

  433. Turns out they're doing

  434. just the opposite.

  435. They're not protectors.

  436. Micah says they're hunters.

  437. They're weaving nets

  438. nets of lies

  439. and serving their own interests

  440. at the expense of others.

  441. Micah says the best of them

  442. is like a briar.

  443. They're like a tangle of thorns.

  444. You know,

  445. the princes and the judges,

  446. they were people

  447. you were supposed to be able

  448. to run to

  449. and get help.

  450. But Micah says,

  451. go ahead and run to them.

  452. You'd just be running

  453. into a bunch of thorns.

  454. But this corruption

  455. among the powerful

  456. has gone down

  457. into every level of society,

  458. Micah says.

  459. Look at verses 5 and 6.

  460. What a sad

  461. and heart-wrenching picture.

  462. No one can be trusted.

  463. Not a neighbor,

  464. not a friend,

  465. not even your own spouse

  466. or children.

  467. It's just a picture

  468. of anarchy,

  469. of total breakdown.

  470. So what's Micah's point?

  471. Is he just like

  472. having a particularly bad day?

  473. Did he like

  474. wake up on the wrong side of bed

  475. and he's just like,

  476. I'm done with humanity.

  477. They're all a bunch of,

  478. you know,

  479. no goods.

  480. Was he just exaggerating

  481. for effect,

  482. you know?

  483. Well, I think Micah's point

  484. is that ultimately

  485. the stain of sin

  486. affects everyone.

  487. We can't just point

  488. to those people

  489. or to those people

  490. or to those people

  491. or to that group of people

  492. or to that particular group

  493. of people

  494. as the really bad ones,

  495. right?

  496. No, the extent of sin

  497. is universal.

  498. We're all infected.

  499. Now, thanks to God's

  500. common grace,

  501. we are all not as bad

  502. as we could be.

  503. But every part of us

  504. is bent by sin.

  505. The corruption of sin

  506. goes the whole way down.

  507. And that means

  508. we ultimately can't look

  509. at the end of the day

  510. to our princes and judges

  511. to rescue us.

  512. And that means

  513. we ultimately can't look

  514. to our friends

  515. and our neighbors

  516. to rescue us.

  517. And that means

  518. we ultimately can't look

  519. to our spouses

  520. or our families

  521. to rescue us.

  522. And that means

  523. we ultimately can't look

  524. to our own selves

  525. to rescue us.

  526. The more we try

  527. to get those relationships

  528. to be our Savior,

  529. the more disappointed

  530. and broken we will be.

  531. So where does that leave us?

  532. Is that the end?

  533. Is that all the Bible

  534. has to say about who we are?

  535. Is that all the mirror

  536. shows us?

  537. That we're created

  538. in God's image

  539. and that we're fallen

  540. into sin?

  541. That we're beautiful

  542. but broken?

  543. Is that the final word?

  544. Well, actually,

  545. there's a third part

  546. to the story.

  547. We humans are created

  548. in God's image

  549. and we humans

  550. have fallen into sin,

  551. to desperate,

  552. serious,

  553. universal,

  554. grave sin.

  555. But third,

  556. God has acted

  557. to redeem us

  558. and to repair

  559. what's been broken.

  560. But this doesn't come

  561. from us,

  562. this healing,

  563. this repair,

  564. this forgiveness.

  565. it comes from God.

  566. In verse 7

  567. of Micah chapter 7,

    Micah 7 chapter mention

  568. the last sort of verse

  569. that we're looking at

  570. this morning,

  571. after recounting

  572. the kind of grim reality

  573. of sin for 14 verses,

  574. after abandoning

  575. any hope

  576. of finding rescue

  577. in sinful humanity,

  578. Micah says in verse 7,

  579. but as for me,

  580. I'll look to the Lord.

  581. I'll wait

  582. for the God

  583. of my salvation

  584. and my God

  585. will hear me.

  586. And so,

  587. after showing us

  588. the gravity of sin

  589. and the extent

  590. of sin,

  591. Micah here is pointing us

  592. to the answer

  593. for sin.

  594. To the answer.

  595. And the answer

  596. for sin

  597. doesn't come

  598. from any human source.

  599. How could it, right?

  600. If you and I

  601. both can't swim

  602. and we fall

  603. into the deep end

  604. of the pool,

  605. the last thing

  606. that we should do

  607. is cling to each other

  608. for rescue.

  609. Right?

  610. That's not going to work.

  611. We need a rescue

  612. that comes from

  613. outside of us.

  614. So where do we look?

  615. You know,

  616. and this is the other tragedy

  617. of human existence.

  618. Not only do we just minimize

  619. and downplay

  620. and pretend

  621. and just sort of

  622. act like sin

  623. isn't really there,

  624. the other tragedy

  625. is that

  626. we look everywhere

  627. for rescue

  628. except for the one place

  629. where it can be found.

  630. We'll look anywhere

  631. and everywhere

  632. for an answer

  633. except for the one place

  634. where God says,

  635. here's the answer.

  636. Here it is

  637. because I love you.

  638. And where is it found?

  639. It's found in God himself.

  640. Micah knew enough

  641. about God's character

  642. and God's nature

  643. to know

  644. that his only hope

  645. in the midst

  646. of his just sin-sick world,

  647. his only hope

  648. was to look to God

  649. and to wait

  650. for the God

  651. of his salvation.

  652. He knew enough

  653. about God

  654. to know

  655. that if he waited

  656. on that God,

  657. God would answer.

  658. After all,

  659. wasn't this the God

  660. who heard the cry

  661. of the people

  662. in Egypt

  663. when they were in slavery

  664. and who came

  665. and eventually set them free?

  666. Wasn't this the God

  667. who led them

  668. through 40 years

  669. in the wilderness

  670. and then finally brought them

  671. into the promised land?

  672. Wasn't this the God

  673. who answered their prayers

  674. again and again

  675. when they were oppressed

  676. and subjected to pagan rulers

  677. and foreign gods?

  678. Wasn't this the God

  679. who did all this

  680. even though the people

  681. were sinful

  682. and rebellious

  683. and didn't deserve

  684. any of God's favor?

  685. Hadn't he shown himself

  686. to be gracious

  687. time and time again?

  688. And so Micah looks

  689. to this God

  690. and says,

  691. I'll wait for you.

  692. I'll entrust myself

  693. into your hands, God.

  694. And then he ends

  695. with this just amazing prayer

  696. of simplicity

  697. and faith

  698. and confidence.

  699. He says,

  700. my God will hear me.

  701. But friends,

  702. how much more

  703. can we say the same thing?

  704. How much more ought we

  705. to have the same

  706. kind of turn

  707. and response

  708. as Micah

  709. knowing what we know

  710. from the New Testament?

  711. Micah could look back

  712. to the Exodus,

  713. back to the wilderness,

  714. back to the period

  715. of the judges

  716. and the kings.

  717. But we can look back

  718. to the very heart

  719. of the gospel itself.

  720. And what is the heart

  721. of the gospel?

  722. What is the very good news

  723. at the center

  724. of the Bible?

  725. Well, we've been

  726. walking through

  727. that story

  728. really all morning

  729. if you think about it.

  730. that there's one God

  731. who's holy

  732. and good

  733. and this one God

  734. made all things

  735. and made you and me

  736. in his image

  737. to love him

  738. and to serve him

  739. and to know

  740. infinite delight

  741. in his presence

  742. with one another.

  743. But rather than

  744. turning to God

  745. in obedience

  746. and in love,

  747. we've turned away

  748. from God

  749. in sin

  750. to be our own rulers

  751. and to live without God

  752. in the world

  753. that God has made.

  754. And because God

  755. is holy and good,

  756. that turning away

  757. in rebellion

  758. deserves punishment.

  759. Because God

  760. is so holy and good,

  761. he won't leave

  762. our rebellion

  763. unjudged.

  764. But in love,

  765. God makes a way

  766. to both exercise

  767. his just judgment

  768. and to forgive

  769. his fallen image bearers.

  770. How does God do it?

  771. God becomes

  772. a human being.

  773. And in Jesus Christ,

  774. God lives

  775. a sinless human life.

  776. And then on the cross,

  777. he dies

  778. in the place

  779. of sinners

  780. taking the wrath

  781. that their sins deserve.

  782. And then three days later,

  783. Jesus Christ

  784. was raised from the dead

  785. to demonstrate

  786. that his sacrifice

  787. for sins

  788. was complete

  789. and perfect

  790. and that it paid

  791. for all of the sins

  792. for everyone

  793. who would turn

  794. and trust in him.

  795. Jesus Christ

  796. is raised from the grave

  797. to give forgiveness

  798. of sins

  799. and new spiritual life

  800. to all who believe

  801. in him.

  802. And Jesus

  803. then ascends

  804. to the Father's right hand

  805. and he now

  806. intercedes

  807. for all

  808. who come to him

  809. and he promises

  810. to return one day

  811. to make all things new

  812. and to release creation

  813. from its bondage

  814. to decay

  815. and to establish

  816. the renewed heavens

  817. and earth

  818. free from sin

  819. and death

  820. once and for all.

  821. Friends,

  822. if we really want

  823. to know ourselves,

  824. if you really want

  825. to know yourself,

  826. don't look to yourself.

  827. look to the Lord

  828. Jesus Christ

  829. because in him

  830. we see what's

  831. really true about us

  832. that we're forgiven

  833. sinners

  834. made in God's image

  835. but loved

  836. and the recipients

  837. of God's undeserved grace.

  838. That's who you really are.

  839. And if you look

  840. at Jesus Christ,

  841. you see that he will

  842. one day release us

  843. from all brokenness

  844. and sin.

  845. And if you know yourself

  846. in light of Jesus

  847. as a forgiven sinner

  848. loved by God,

  849. then you know

  850. what you can do?

  851. You can take stock

  852. of even your worst

  853. flaws and failures.

  854. You can really look

  855. at those in the mirror

  856. and not be crushed

  857. by it

  858. because you know

  859. that you're forgiven

  860. and loved.

  861. And so you can look

  862. at those sins

  863. in the mirror

  864. and you can say,

  865. those don't really

  866. define me.

  867. And you can turn

  868. away from them.

  869. And you cannot be

  870. defined by those habits

  871. and patterns

  872. and desires.

  873. And you can do

  874. the hard thing

  875. of asking for help

  876. to break out

  877. of destructive cycles

  878. of sin

  879. and selfishness.

  880. and you can be

  881. open

  882. and you can be

  883. transparent.

  884. And you can let

  885. your life

  886. be found

  887. in the love of God

  888. for you

  889. in Christ.

  890. And you can walk

  891. in holiness

  892. and obedience

  893. before him.

  894. Let's pray together.

  895. Oh, Father in heaven,

  896. that is what we long

  897. for,

  898. to be free

  899. from sin

  900. and to walk

  901. in the freedom

  902. of holiness,

  903. righteousness.

  904. But, Lord,

  905. we know that

  906. in order to get there,

  907. we sometimes have

  908. to take a hard look

  909. in the mirror.

  910. Father,

  911. perhaps your spirit's

  912. been doing that

  913. this morning

  914. in our midst.

  915. Perhaps in our hearts

  916. you've been putting

  917. your finger on sins

  918. that need to be confessed

  919. and turned away from.

  920. Perhaps this morning

  921. your spirit's been

  922. working in the hearts

  923. of those

  924. who don't know you

  925. and who've been

  926. trying to

  927. live under

  928. their own righteousness

  929. and their own steam

  930. and their own identity

  931. O Lord,

  932. would your spirit

  933. come

  934. and shine his light

  935. into those places

  936. of our hearts

  937. and then,

  938. spirit,

  939. would you turn

  940. our eyes to Christ

  941. and help us

  942. to see the forgiveness

  943. of our sins.

  944. O Lord,

  945. grant saving faith

  946. to those

  947. who are far from you

  948. this morning.

  949. And Lord,

  950. by your Holy Spirit

  951. in us,

  952. would we

  953. put sin to death

  954. and walk

  955. in the newness

  956. of life

  957. that you have

  958. given us.

  959. Pray this in Jesus' name.

  960. Amen.
