  1. Well, friends, would you turn with me to the book of 1 John?

  2. 1 John, we're looking at chapter 3, verses 10 through 24 today.

  3. That's page 960 in the Pew Bible.

  4. John chapter 3, verses 10 through 24, page 960.

    John 3:10–24

  5. We'll have it on the screen so as I read it the first time,

  6. but it'll be good to have it open as we continue to meditate on this passage today.

  7. As we come to God's Word, let me pray for us.

  8. Our Father in heaven, what a wonderful and needed reminder it is

  9. that it is you who has a hold on us long before we ever took hold of you.

  10. God, your love is always the first love in our lives.

  11. It always precedes any love that we respond and give back to you,

  12. and that is a great comfort and a great joy.

  13. So, Lord, as we approach your Word this morning,

  14. help us to see your Word as just another sign of your first love for us

  15. and help us to receive it by your Spirit

  16. and help us to live it out in his power.

  17. For Jesus' sake, amen.

  18. All right, 1 John chapter 3, verses 10 through 24.

    1 John 3:10–24

  19. By this it is evident who are the children of God

  20. and who are the children of the devil.

  21. Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God,

  22. nor is the one who does not love his brother.

  23. For this is the message you have heard from the beginning,

  24. that we should love one another.

  25. We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one

  26. and murdered his brother.

  27. And why did he murder him?

  28. Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous.

  29. Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.

  30. We know that we have passed out of death into life

  31. because we love the brothers.

  32. Whoever does not love abides in death.

  33. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer,

  34. and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

  35. By this we know love,

  36. that he laid down his life for us,

  37. and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

  38. If anyone has the world's good and sees his brother in need,

  39. yet closes his heart against him,

  40. how does God's love abide in him?

  41. Little children,

  42. let us not love in word or talk,

  43. but in deed and in truth.

  44. By this we shall know that we are of the truth

  45. and reassure our heart before him.

  46. For whenever our heart condemns us,

  47. God is greater than our heart,

  48. and he knows everything.

  49. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us,

  50. we have confidence before God,

  51. and whatever we ask,

  52. we receive from him

  53. because we keep his commandments

  54. and do what pleases him.

  55. And this is his commandment,

  56. that we believe in the name of his son,

  57. Jesus Christ,

  58. and love one another,

  59. just as he has commanded us.

  60. Whoever keeps his commandments

  61. abides in God and God in him,

  62. and by this we know that he abides in us

  63. by the Spirit whom he has given us.

  64. All right.

  65. Well, as we've seen this summer,

  66. 1 John, as a book,

  67. in its own sort of evolving,

  68. sort of elliptical way,

  69. presents three ways

  70. or three kind of signs that are evident,

  71. three things that are evident in someone

  72. or in a church

  73. that has genuine faith in Christ.

  74. And those three signs that John describes

  75. are doctrine, obedience, and love.

  76. In other words, doctrine,

  77. believing the truth about Jesus' person and work,

  78. that's one sign.

  79. Obedience, a willing to follow God's commands,

  80. that's the second.

  81. And love.

  82. Do you love your brothers and sisters in Christ?

  83. Now, it's important to note

  84. that those three things that John talks about,

  85. they don't make you a Christian.

  86. It's not as if doing those things

  87. will earn you favor with God.

  88. No.

  89. It's more like the fruit of a tree.

  90. Those things are kind of the evidence.

  91. They're the outgrowth.

  92. They're the things that show

  93. that you've come through the gospel

  94. to really receive God's love and favor

  95. and be born again in Him.

  96. These three things are a bit like a three-legged stool.

  97. And if you're missing one of them,

  98. what happens?

  99. If you have a three-legged stool with two legs,

  100. it falls over, right?

  101. It doesn't stand.

  102. Think about it.

  103. Obedience and love

  104. without believing that Jesus is the Christ,

  105. well, that's not much more

  106. than just kind of moralistic deism, right?

  107. Or if you have love and belief without obedience,

  108. well, that's what we call antinomianism.

  109. You just do whatever you want.

  110. But belief and obedience without love,

  111. you see, that also falls over.

  112. Because belief and obedience without love

  113. is just a cold and joyless, dry legalism.

  114. So in this book,

  115. John wants to commend all three

  116. as a whole picture

  117. of what genuine spirituality looks like.

  118. And here in our text today,

  119. we're looking at that third leg of the stool.

  120. We're looking at love.

  121. And John's big idea here,

  122. you see it in verse 10 and in verse 11,

  123. is that true Christians must love one another.

  124. Brotherly love,

  125. that is love for one's fellow brothers

  126. and sisters in Christ,

  127. brotherly love is an essential mark

  128. of genuine Christianity.

  129. A Christian who doesn't love the brothers

  130. is no Christian at all, John says.

  131. Now, John's going to unpack this

  132. in this passage in four ways.

  133. And we're going to look at those four things

  134. as we sort of unpack

  135. this third critical leg of the stool.

  136. First, John talks about the necessity

  137. of brotherly love,

  138. the necessity of it.

  139. And we see this in verses 12 through 15.

  140. John brings before us

  141. the negative example of Cain.

  142. Now, you probably remember

  143. the story of Cain and Abel

  144. from Genesis 4.

  145. You know, if you've ever tried

  146. reading through the Bible

  147. in the whole year,

  148. you know, you probably at least

  149. got to Genesis 4

  150. before you petered out

  151. somewhere in Leviticus, right?

  152. You know, so you remember Cain and Abel.

  153. Cain and Abel were the very first brothers

  154. in the Bible.

  155. And what happens?

  156. They grow up,

  157. and in the course of time,

  158. they both offer sacrifices to God,

  159. but we're told that God accepts

  160. Abel's sacrifice,

  161. but he does not accept Cain's.

  162. Now, Genesis 4 doesn't seem to tell us

  163. why Cain's sacrifice wasn't accepted,

  164. but the Apostle John here in our text

  165. tells us that Cain's deeds were evil

  166. and his brother Abel's righteous.

  167. If you go to the book of Hebrews

  168. in the New Testament,

  169. chapter 11, verse 4,

  170. it suggests something similar.

  171. We're told there that Abel

  172. offered his sacrifice in faith,

  173. that is, out of love and trust for God,

  174. and presumably Cain did not.

  175. So it would seem then,

  176. as we put these pieces together,

  177. that God doesn't accept Cain's sacrifice then,

  178. because in this instance,

  179. Cain's outward religious actions,

  180. his sacrifice, as it were,

  181. that outward religious action,

  182. wasn't matched by an inward heart

  183. of love and obedience towards God.

  184. Rather, Cain's life was marked

  185. by unrighteousness

  186. and a lack of inward trust in God.

  187. So God doesn't accept his sacrifice.

  188. It reminds us of what God will say

  189. through the prophet Isaiah many years later,

  190. seeing the same problem

  191. in the people of Israel

  192. at the time of Isaiah.

  193. He says,

  194. this people honors me with their lips,

  195. but their hearts are far from me.

  196. So Cain, it seems,

  197. was honoring God with his lips,

  198. with an outward sacrifice,

  199. but his heart was far from God.

  200. And how did Cain respond to all this?

  201. Well, in Genesis 4,

  202. we see that God pleads with Cain.

  203. God comes to him

  204. and calls him to repentance.

  205. He warns him.

  206. He says,

  207. Cain, this is not the path.

  208. This is a path that leads to death.

  209. But instead of responding to God

  210. in repentance and in faith,

  211. Cain grows angry

  212. and jealous and bitter.

  213. And he calls his younger brother Abel

  214. out into the field

  215. and he strikes him down.

  216. He murders him.

  217. Now, coming back to 1 John,

  218. we might think this example of Cain

  219. is pretty extreme, right?

  220. I mean,

  221. not many of us here

  222. have probably murdered someone.

  223. But John,

  224. you see,

  225. the Apostle John,

  226. he wants us to look at the heart.

  227. Look at the end of verses 14

  228. and verse 15 in this paragraph.

  229. Whoever does not love

  230. abides in death.

  231. And whoever hates his brother

  232. is a murderer.

  233. And you know that no murderer

  234. has eternal life abiding in him.

  235. John wants us to look

  236. at the heart here.

  237. And he also wants us to realize

  238. that, you know,

  239. there's no neutral ground

  240. in the spiritual life.

  241. Well, you know,

  242. we like to think,

  243. we like to think

  244. that there's kind of plenty

  245. of neutral ground

  246. in the spiritual life.

  247. You know,

  248. on the one hand,

  249. there are these really awful,

  250. murderous people over there

  251. like Cain.

  252. And then there are these

  253. really amazing,

  254. loving people over there

  255. like Mother Teresa

  256. or whoever.

  257. And then the rest of us

  258. are just kind of neutral.

  259. We're in the middle.

  260. We're neither all that good

  261. or all that bad.

  262. But you know,

  263. that's not how the Bible

  264. depicts the spiritual life.

  265. The Bible doesn't say

  266. there's any neutral ground.

  267. You either abide

  268. in the house of love

  269. and life

  270. or you abide

  271. in the house of hatred

  272. and death.

  273. And without love,

  274. John says,

  275. you're not living

  276. in neutrality.

  277. You're living

  278. in the house of death,

  279. of hatred,

  280. and yes,

  281. even murder.

  282. Remember what the Apostle Paul

  283. says to the Corinthian church

  284. in 1 Corinthians 13,

  285. 1 through 3.

  286. He says,

  287. if I speak in the tongues

  288. of men and of angels

  289. but have not love,

  290. I'm a noisy gong

  291. or a clanging cymbal.

  292. And if I have prophetic powers

  293. and understand all mysteries

  294. and all knowledge,

  295. and if I have all faith

  296. so as to remove mountains

  297. but have not love,

  298. I'm nothing.

  299. If I give away all I have

  300. and if I deliver up my body

  301. to be burned

  302. but have not love,

  303. I gain nothing.

  304. Now we're familiar

  305. with that passage, right?

  306. 1 Corinthians 13.

  307. We've heard it read

  308. at weddings

  309. and things like that.

  310. I remember a friend of mine

  311. in Australia,

  312. Australia,

  313. not a very Christianized place,

  314. right?

  315. He had a friend

  316. who was asked to read

  317. 1 Corinthians 13

  318. at a wedding

  319. but he read

  320. 1 Chronicles 13 instead.

  321. That must have been

  322. a great wedding.

  323. But anyway,

  324. 1 Corinthians 13.

  325. It's not just this sort

  326. of fluffy passage, right?

  327. There's actually an edge to it.

  328. Without love,

  329. we're nothing.

  330. Like Cain,

  331. we can offer up

  332. religious externals

  333. and these externals

  334. might look wonderful

  335. or powerful

  336. or even significant

  337. but without love,

  338. we gain nothing.

  339. We are nothing.

  340. And you know what was happening

  341. at the church in Corinth

  342. that didn't have love?

  343. Jealousy, bitterness,

  344. animosity, hatred.

  345. These things were growing

  346. like wildfire.

  347. And as a result,

  348. the church was dying.

  349. Why?

  350. Because jealously,

  351. bitterness,

  352. animosity, hatred,

  353. you know, externally,

  354. those things might sort of look

  355. or actually be a mile away

  356. from murder.

  357. But internally,

  358. in the heart,

  359. they're one and the same.

  360. Isn't this what Jesus himself

  361. taught in the Sermon on the Mount?

  362. Matthew 5.

  363. Jesus says,

  364. You've heard that it was said of old,

  365. you shall not murder

  366. and whoever murders

  367. will be liable to judgment.

  368. But I say to you

  369. that everyone who is angry

  370. with his brother

  371. will be liable to judgment.

  372. Whoever insults his brother

  373. will be liable to the council.

  374. And whoever says,

  375. You fool,

  376. that is despising them

  377. in your heart,

  378. will be liable

  379. to the hell of fire.

  380. So for our Lord Jesus,

  381. hatred,

  382. animosity,

  383. contempt,

  384. these things were all tantamount

  385. to murder in the heart.

  386. Without love,

  387. we abide in death.

  388. Love is the necessary mark

  389. of real Christianity.

  390. It has to be there.

  391. Now, there are two ways

  392. we can apply this point

  393. about the necessity of love

  394. as John presents it here.

  395. And I think the first way

  396. we need to apply it

  397. is through self-examination.

  398. Friends,

  399. outward show

  400. is no evidence

  401. of inward transformation.

  402. Cain and Abel

  403. offered very similar

  404. sacrifices externally.

  405. One brought livestock,

  406. the other brought produce

  407. from the field,

  408. but that's not what made

  409. one acceptable

  410. and the other unacceptable.

  411. Because you know,

  412. in the rest of the Old Testament,

  413. God commands both animals

  414. and produce

  415. to be brought as sacrifices.

  416. So both Cain and Abel

  417. looked externally

  418. religious,

  419. spiritual,

  420. worshipful.

  421. Both of them

  422. came to the house

  423. of the Lord as it were,

  424. but only one

  425. of those two brothers

  426. was living or abiding

  427. in the house

  428. of eternal life.

  429. The other one

  430. was abiding

  431. and living

  432. in the house

  433. of death.

  434. Both in the house

  435. of the Lord,

  436. but both living

  437. in very different houses

  438. spiritually.

  439. How about you, friend?

  440. You've come

  441. to the house

  442. of the Lord today.

  443. You've sung songs.

  444. You've prayed prayers.

  445. You've heard the Bible read.

  446. You're now hearing

  447. God's Word preached.

  448. But these external actions

  449. on your part

  450. do not necessarily mean

  451. that you have eternal life

  452. living in you.

  453. These external actions

  454. are certainly important,

  455. even wonderful things to do.

  456. They're not to be

  457. despised or neglected,

  458. but they are not

  459. certain evidence

  460. that you are

  461. in a saving relationship

  462. with Christ.

  463. Christ.

  464. In Matthew 7,

  465. Jesus even says this.

  466. He says,

  467. On that day,

  468. many will say to me,

  469. Lord, Lord,

  470. did we not prophesy

  471. in your name

  472. and cast out demons

  473. in your name

  474. and do many mighty works

  475. in your name?

  476. Then Jesus says,

  477. I will declare to them,

  478. I never knew you.

  479. Depart from me,

  480. you workers

  481. of lawlessness.

  482. You see what the Lord

  483. is saying?

  484. The external

  485. religious acts,

  486. even seemingly

  487. miraculous deeds

  488. are not certain evidence

  489. of saving faith.

  490. There must be

  491. brotherly love.

  492. Love for one another

  493. in the family of God.

  494. That's the necessary sign.

  495. That's the necessary evidence.

  496. Friend, do you have that?

  497. If not,

  498. then plead to God for mercy.

  499. Ask God for Christ's sake

  500. to forgive your sins.

  501. And to forgive your attempts

  502. at making yourself

  503. look good on the outside.

  504. Ask God

  505. to make you new

  506. from the inside out.

  507. Jesus says,

  508. anyone who comes to me,

  509. I won't cast them out.

  510. Come to him

  511. and ask him

  512. to forgive your sins

  513. and receive him.

  514. Now there's another way

  515. that John applies

  516. this first point

  517. about the necessity

  518. of brotherly love

  519. and we see it

  520. in verse 13.

  521. He writes,

  522. don't be surprised,

  523. brothers,

  524. that the world hates you.

  525. Now just as Abel

  526. was the target

  527. of Cain's hatred,

  528. bitterness,

  529. and jealousy,

  530. John's saying,

  531. so Christians

  532. shouldn't be surprised

  533. if we encounter

  534. the same sort of treatment

  535. today from those

  536. outside the faith.

  537. And the truth is,

  538. we have to admit

  539. that while we do

  540. at times experience

  541. that sort of thing

  542. in the world,

  543. whether it be

  544. from coworkers

  545. or non-Christian family members

  546. or whatever it is,

  547. I think we also have to admit

  548. that there's a whole lot

  549. of the world

  550. inside the visible church too,

  551. right?

  552. Tragically,

  553. people who claim

  554. to be Christians

  555. can also be full

  556. of bitterness

  557. and jealousy

  558. and hatred.

  559. But brothers and sisters,

  560. don't be surprised.

  561. Don't be caught off guard.

  562. This is the landscape

  563. of our fallen world.

  564. And John writes

  565. these words

  566. to comfort us

  567. and to prepare us

  568. when we experience

  569. these things.

  570. because he knows

  571. if we're not careful,

  572. if we are taken by surprise,

  573. then we too

  574. will be tempted

  575. to fall into bitterness

  576. and hatred ourselves.

  577. So don't be surprised.

  578. Be prepared.

  579. Well,

  580. after telling us

  581. about the necessity

  582. of brotherly love,

  583. John goes on to show us

  584. the nature of brotherly love.

  585. What does this sort of love

  586. look like?

  587. If it's essential

  588. that we have it,

  589. how do we recognize it

  590. in our lives?

  591. So this is John's second point,

  592. the nature of brotherly love,

  593. the nature.

  594. We see this in verses 16

  595. through 18.

  596. Verse 16,

  597. by this we know love,

  598. that he,

  599. that is Jesus,

  600. laid down his life for us

  601. and we ought to lay down

  602. our lives

  603. for the brothers.

  604. So after the negative

  605. example of Cain,

  606. John now points us

  607. to the positive example

  608. of Christ.

  609. Cain was sort of

  610. the worst older brother

  611. in the entire Bible,

  612. right?

  613. And yet now he points us

  614. to Jesus,

  615. the true older brother.

  616. Christ who laid down

  617. his life

  618. shows us

  619. the nature of real,

  620. genuine love.

  621. This is love

  622. that we lay down

  623. our lives

  624. for our fellow Christians.

  625. Now, of course,

  626. the love of Christ

  627. compels us

  628. to do good

  629. to everyone,

  630. like the good Samaritan

  631. on the road to Jericho

  632. who shows love

  633. to someone

  634. who culturally

  635. would have been

  636. considered his enemy,

  637. right?

  638. Just like that good Samaritan,

  639. so we show love

  640. to everyone.

  641. Even those culturally,

  642. we might think

  643. they're our enemies

  644. or other people

  645. might think

  646. that we're enemies.

  647. We show love

  648. to everyone,

  649. but we do have

  650. a special regard

  651. and a special obligation

  652. and a special love

  653. for fellow believers.

  654. The Apostle Paul

  655. captures this balance

  656. so well

  657. in Galatians 6.10.

  658. He writes,

  659. So then,

  660. as we have opportunity,

  661. let us do good

  662. to everyone

  663. and especially

  664. to those

  665. who are of

  666. the household

  667. of faith.

  668. So what does

  669. this self-giving love

  670. look like?

  671. How is it expressed

  672. in everyday

  673. Christian living?

  674. And you know,

  675. here John

  676. is very down to earth.

  677. He doesn't want us

  678. to think

  679. that laying down

  680. our lives

  681. is something

  682. that only happens

  683. in extraordinary

  684. once-in-a-lifetime moments.

  685. No,

  686. look at how

  687. this should play out

  688. practically for us.

  689. Look at what John says

  690. in verses 17 and 18.

  691. If anyone has

  692. the world's goods

  693. and sees his brother

  694. in need,

  695. yet closes his heart

  696. against him,

  697. how does God's love

  698. abide in him?

  699. Little children,

  700. let us not love

  701. in word or talk,

  702. but in deed

  703. and in truth.

  704. So here's the question

  705. John's answering,

  706. or here's the question

  707. John's asking.

  708. This is what

  709. self-giving love

  710. looks like.

  711. Do you share

  712. what you have

  713. with brothers

  714. and sisters in need?

  715. Do you share

  716. what you have

  717. with brothers

  718. and sisters in need?

  719. I remember

  720. getting a phone call

  721. at the church office

  722. not too long ago

  723. from a church member

  724. and they were calling

  725. because they had

  726. a bunch of extra food

  727. in their pantry.

  728. They were kind of

  729. cleaning it out

  730. and making some room

  731. and they gave

  732. the church office

  733. a call

  734. because they wanted

  735. to know

  736. who in the church

  737. might be in need,

  738. that they might

  739. give it to them.

  740. Now,

  741. on the surface

  742. that sounds really simple,

  743. right?

  744. Maybe even simplistic

  745. or too easy,

  746. right?

  747. Such a simple thing.

  748. But according to John,

  749. that's an example

  750. of real love.

  751. When we take

  752. the world's goods

  753. that we have,

  754. whether it's money

  755. or resources

  756. or influence,

  757. and when we see

  758. the real needs

  759. of our Christian

  760. brother or sister,

  761. and when we open

  762. our heart

  763. to meet that need

  764. with what we have.

  765. Now,

  766. I wonder,

  767. did you want

  768. the apostle

  769. to give

  770. a more flashy

  771. explanation

  772. or application

  773. of self-giving love?

  774. Something more dramatic,

  775. more attention-getting,

  776. right?

  777. But that's just it.

  778. This kind of love,

  779. it's not about

  780. being flashy

  781. or dramatic

  782. or extravagant

  783. or attention-grabbing.

  784. If that's what you're after,

  785. we're really just

  786. doing it for ourselves.

  787. If we want something

  788. flashy or dramatic

  789. or extravagant

  790. or attention-grabbing,

  791. then aren't we

  792. just doing those things

  793. to look good

  794. or to feel good?

  795. No,

  796. real self-giving love

  797. lays down

  798. even that desire

  799. to be seen

  800. and admired

  801. for doing a great

  802. act of love.

  803. Real self-giving love

  804. is self-forgetful.

  805. It's more tuned in

  806. to the real needs

  807. of the brother or sister

  808. right before me

  809. and how

  810. what God has given me

  811. might be used

  812. to meet that need.

  813. Well,

  814. if this is the nature

  815. of brotherly love,

  816. well,

  817. how do we go about

  818. putting it into practice then?

  819. Well,

  820. first,

  821. notice that John says

  822. we must be able

  823. to see

  824. our brother or sister

  825. in need.

  826. We see them.

  827. In other words,

  828. we need to be in enough

  829. regular contact

  830. and relationship

  831. with fellow believers

  832. that we can actually identify,

  833. actually see

  834. what the needs are

  835. when they arise.

  836. Practically,

  837. if you're able to

  838. and you don't

  839. regularly come to church

  840. on Sundays,

  841. if you're able to

  842. and you don't

  843. regularly fellowship

  844. with a small group

  845. or another smaller fellowship

  846. of church members,

  847. then it's going to be

  848. very difficult

  849. for you to love

  850. in the way

  851. John describes here.

  852. Imagine I never

  853. sat down

  854. with my family

  855. at the dinner table

  856. to eat with them.

  857. Every night,

  858. I would stay in the office

  859. to work

  860. or watch TV

  861. or go for a walk,

  862. you know.

  863. I was just never

  864. present with them.

  865. Could I really say

  866. that I love them

  867. if I never sit down

  868. to be with them?

  869. And can I know

  870. what's going in that…

  871. Can I really know

  872. what's going on

  873. in their lives

  874. enough

  875. to really serve

  876. and love them?

  877. No.

  878. We have to be present

  879. to one another.

  880. Faithful church attendance

  881. matters.

  882. Faithful small group

  883. attendance matters.

  884. As an aside,

  885. this is one of the many

  886. reasons we practice

  887. formal church membership

  888. so we can actually know

  889. and identify

  890. with one another

  891. as brothers and sisters

  892. in the same spiritual family.

  893. In membership,

  894. we're saying,

  895. I'm not just an attender.

  896. I'm not just a consumer.

  897. I'm a member

  898. of this family

  899. ready to serve

  900. and be served

  901. by my fellow brothers

  902. and sisters.

  903. So first,

  904. in order to practice

  905. brotherly love,

  906. we need to be present

  907. with each other

  908. so we can actually

  909. see each other's needs.

  910. Second,

  911. we need to view

  912. our worldly goods

  913. as a means

  914. of blessing others.

  915. We need to look

  916. at our finances,

  917. for example,

  918. and ask,

  919. how much can I give

  920. to others in need?

  921. The world wants us

  922. to push

  923. to the limits

  924. of our spending,

  925. right,

  926. so that we can have

  927. a certain lifestyle

  928. and that lifestyle

  929. is supposed to bring us

  930. joy, happiness,

  931. peace,

  932. and like nirvana

  933. on earth,

  934. you know.

  935. But as Christians,

  936. we need to ask,

  937. what if I actually

  938. live a simpler lifestyle

  939. so that I can free up

  940. more of the resources

  941. God has entrusted

  942. to me

  943. to help my brothers

  944. and sisters

  945. in need?

  946. Now,

  947. we need to be careful

  948. not to judge one another

  949. in this matter,

  950. right?

  951. But this is a question

  952. we all need to be asking

  953. of ourselves.

  954. How can I be viewing

  955. my worldly goods

  956. not as things

  957. that I possess

  958. to use for my own ends,

  959. but as gifts

  960. to bless others?

  961. As a church,

  962. we set aside money

  963. in our annual budget

  964. for this very reason.

  965. We have what's called

  966. the Deacon's Benevolence Fund,

  967. and that is money

  968. that we've set aside

  969. as a church family

  970. to give practically

  971. to those church members

  972. and church regular attenders

  973. and those who are

  974. in our midst

  975. to give to them

  976. to help meet practical,

  977. tangible needs

  978. as they arise.

  979. And I know that many of you

  980. give generously

  981. to the Deacon's Benevolence Fund

  982. so that we can do that work

  983. more and more,

  984. and many people,

  985. probably more than you know,

  986. have been blessed very deeply

  987. through that generosity.

  988. But you know,

  989. this doesn't just happen

  990. formally as a church family

  991. through the Deacon's Benevolence Fund.

  992. It can happen informally

  993. through all of us.

  994. As we hear about needs

  995. in our small group,

  996. as we learn about needs

  997. in our everyday relationships

  998. in the family of God,

  999. we can express the kind of love

1000. that John is describing here

  1001. when we view

1002. whatever worldly goods we have

  1003. not as something

  1004. for our disposal,

  1005. but as something God

  1006. has entrusted to us

1007. that we might bless others.

  1008. And of course,

1009. this dynamic of identifying needs

  1010. and giving generously,

  1011. it doesn't just stay

  1012. within the bounds

1013. of our local church, right?

  1014. It extends globally.

1015. Just think of the missionaries

1016. that we support as a church.

1017. The Tidwells in South Asia

  1018. serving in hospital work

  1019. and healthcare there,

  1020. meeting very practical needs.

1021. Our missionaries in Central Asia

  1022. who were just visited

  1023. a couple weeks ago,

  1024. caring for persecuted believers

1025. in that part of the world.

  1026. Very real needs

1027. that they are seeking to meet.

1028. Even Greg and Kim King

  1029. in Austria,

  1030. who are doing work

  1031. among Turkish immigrants

  1032. in Vienna

1033. who recently were in need

  1034. of housing,

  1035. you know,

  1036. as they continue

  1037. their work of outreach.

1038. That was a very real need

1039. and we as a church

1040. were able to give to that need.

  1041. So this dynamic

1042. of seeing brothers and sisters

  1043. in need,

  1044. whether they're persecuted believers

  1045. in Central Asia

  1046. or missionaries in Vienna,

  1047. seeking to use

  1048. our worldly goods

  1049. to meet that need,

  1050. this dynamic

  1051. that John's describing,

  1052. it extends out

  1053. from us globally.

  1054. So practically then,

  1055. first,

1056. we need to be present enough

  1057. to see the needs

1058. of our brothers and sisters

  1059. and second,

  1060. we need to view

  1061. our worldly goods

  1062. as a means

  1063. to bless others.

  1064. But there's a third thing,

  1065. practically.

1066. Look again at verse 17.

  1067. John writes,

  1068. if anyone has

  1069. the world's goods

  1070. and sees his brother

  1071. in need,

  1072. yet closes his heart

  1073. against him,

  1074. how does God's love

  1075. abide in him?

  1076. The third thing

  1077. we need practically then

  1078. is an open heart,

  1079. a heart that doesn't close,

  1080. a heart that doesn't close

  1081. whether out of fear

  1082. or busyness

  1083. or a critical,

  1084. judgmental spirit.

  1085. We need hearts

  1086. that are open,

  1087. open to give,

  1088. open to sacrifice.

  1089. But what is it

  1090. that opens our hearts

  1091. in this way?

  1092. How do we get

  1093. this opened heart?

1094. Well, John tells us here,

  1095. doesn't he?

1096. It's the love of God

  1097. for us.

  1098. If God's love

  1099. abides in us,

  1100. then our hearts

  1101. will open

  1102. towards others.

  1103. And this brings us

  1104. to the third

  1105. big idea,

1106. main point of our passage.

  1107. John showed us

  1108. the necessity

  1109. and the nature

  1110. of brotherly love,

1111. but he also points us

  1112. to the source

  1113. of brotherly love,

  1114. the source.

1115. And we see it right here

  1116. in the same paragraph

  1117. we've been considering,

  1118. verses 16 through 18,

  1119. but especially

  1120. in verse 16.

1121. By this we know love,

  1122. that he laid down

  1123. his life

  1124. for us.

  1125. You see,

  1126. friends,

  1127. Jesus Christ

  1128. isn't just

  1129. a moral example

  1130. for us to follow.

  1131. If your understanding

  1132. of Jesus

  1133. stops there,

  1134. then you don't

  1135. really understand

  1136. who Jesus is

  1137. or what he himself

  1138. understood his mission

  1139. to be.

  1140. If you only understand

1141. Jesus as a moral example,

  1142. then you also

  1143. don't really understand

  1144. the love of God

  1145. for you.

  1146. Because Jesus

  1147. didn't just come

  1148. to show us

  1149. how to live

  1150. a loving life.

  1151. He didn't lay down

  1152. his life merely

  1153. as an example.

  1154. No,

  1155. John says Jesus

  1156. laid down his life

  1157. for us.

  1158. When Jesus died,

  1159. he accomplished

  1160. something for us

  1161. in our place

  1162. that we could not

  1163. accomplish.

  1164. Jesus himself

  1165. put it this way

  1166. in Mark 10,

    Mark 10:45

  1167. verse 45.

  1168. He said,

1169. for the Son of Man

1170. came not to be served

  1171. but to serve

1172. and to give his life

  1173. as a ransom

  1174. for many.

  1175. Did you catch that?

  1176. Jesus says

  1177. he didn't come

1178. to just give his life

  1179. as an example

  1180. for many

  1181. but as a ransom

  1182. for many.

  1183. Now,

  1184. what's a ransom?

  1185. Well,

  1186. a ransom is a payment,

  1187. right,

  1188. that sets you free.

  1189. You see,

  1190. friends,

  1191. all of us,

  1192. apart from Christ,

  1193. we're enslaved

  1194. in sin

  1195. and in spiritual poverty.

  1196. We owe God

  1197. a debt

  1198. that we can't

  1199. possibly pay

  1200. and we stand

  1201. condemned.

  1202. but Christ

  1203. came to pay

  1204. our ransom,

  1205. to make the payment

  1206. to set us free.

  1207. The Apostle Paul

  1208. put it this way

  1209. in 2 Corinthians 8,

  1210. 9.

  1211. He said,

  1212. for you know

  1213. the grace

1214. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1215. that though

  1216. he was rich,

  1217. yet for your sake

  1218. he became poor

  1219. so that you

  1220. by his poverty

  1221. might become rich.

  1222. the king of heaven,

  1223. the only son

  1224. of the Father

  1225. in the splendor

  1226. of eternity

  1227. came to this earth

  1228. in poverty.

  1229. He was born

  1230. in a manger,

  1231. right?

  1232. I mean,

  1233. mangers aren't like

  1234. the cute things

1235. you see in nativity scenes,

  1236. right?

  1237. Like animals eat

  1238. out of mangers,

  1239. that's what they're for

  1240. and that's where

1241. the king of the universe

  1242. was born

  1243. when he took on

  1244. flesh for us.

1245. Jesus came to this earth

  1246. in poverty

  1247. and then he died

  1248. a criminal's death

  1249. on a cross

  1250. in your place.

  1251. Why?

  1252. So that we,

  1253. through his poverty,

  1254. might become

  1255. spiritually rich.

  1256. What are those

  1257. spiritual riches

  1258. that we gain

  1259. through Christ's poverty?

  1260. The spiritual riches

  1261. of having all

  1262. of our sins forgiven,

  1263. having a perfectly

  1264. clean and clear

  1265. conscience before God.

  1266. The spiritual riches

  1267. of being adopted

  1268. into God's family

  1269. to be beloved

  1270. as a daughter,

  1271. as a son,

  1272. to be assured

  1273. of the fatherly's favor,

  1274. father's favor over us

  1275. and for us

  1276. all of our life.

  1277. The spiritual riches

  1278. of being given

  1279. a new heart,

  1280. a new nature

  1281. by the Holy Spirit

  1282. to have new desires

  1283. planted in us

  1284. for life and joy

  1285. and holiness.

  1286. The spiritual riches

  1287. of being given

  1288. the indestructible promise

  1289. of eternal life.

  1290. Friend, ask anyone

  1291. on their deathbed

  1292. if they would give

  1293. all of their money

1294. and all of their wealth

1295. and all of their fame

  1296. away

  1297. to not face

  1298. the abyss of death

1299. and what would they say?

  1300. In a heartbeat.

  1301. And yet,

1302. what has Christ given us?

  1303. The spiritual riches

  1304. of eternal life.

  1305. Through his poverty,

  1306. you've become rich.

1307. And do you see now

1308. how much God loves you?

  1309. He didn't just send

1310. his son as your example,

  1311. but as your savior.

  1312. He paid the debt

  1313. that you owed.

1314. He lavished his heavenly riches

  1315. upon you

1316. when you didn't deserve it.

1317. He rose from the grave

  1318. on the third day

1319. to prove that your debt

1320. of sin had been erased.

  1321. Done!

  1322. And that the glories

  1323. of heaven now belong

  1324. to you

  1325. and to everyone

  1326. who will simply repent

  1327. and believe in him.

  1328. Friends,

  1329. that,

  1330. that is the source

  1331. of brotherly love.

  1332. That is the thing

1333. that opens up our hearts

  1334. when we see

  1335. that his poverty

  1336. has made us rich.

  1337. When we see

  1338. that we don't earn

  1339. God's favor

  1340. through showing brotherly love

  1341. because we never could,

  1342. right?

1343. But that God has freely

  1344. given us his favor.

  1345. You see,

  1346. brotherly love

1347. is not what makes us

  1348. a Christian.

1349. It's the other way around.

  1350. No,

  1351. we show brotherly love

  1352. because we've been given

  1353. God's favor freely

  1354. by grace.

  1355. Brotherly love

  1356. is not the cause

  1357. of God loving us.

  1358. It's the result

  1359. of God's loving us.

  1360. Brotherly love

  1361. is the evidence

  1362. that God's first love

  1363. has taken hold

  1364. of our hearts.

  1365. It's the evidence

  1366. that the self-giving love

  1367. of Jesus Christ

  1368. has captivated us

  1369. and transformed us

  1370. and that we've given

  1371. our life to him

  1372. and his love.

  1373. This source

  1374. of brotherly love

  1375. doesn't come from ourselves.

  1376. It comes from God

  1377. and it comes from

  1378. seeing with fresh eyes

  1379. what Jesus has done

  1380. for us,

  1381. that he laid down

  1382. his life for us.

  1383. And the more you

  1384. behold him

  1385. in his self-giving glory,

1386. the more you behold him

  1387. doing that for you,

  1388. that's what opens

  1389. your hearts.

  1390. That's what's going

  1391. to open our hearts

  1392. even when we're afraid

  1393. or distracted

  1394. or selfish

  1395. because when we see

  1396. how much Christ

  1397. has loved us,

  1398. well then friends,

1399. what do we have to fear?

1400. Why do I have to cling

  1401. to this world's goods

  1402. when I know

  1403. what Christ has done

  1404. for me?

  1405. If he gave himself

  1406. for me,

1407. if he gave his own self

  1408. for me,

  1409. will he not continue

1410. to take care of me?

  1411. And so our hearts

  1412. continue to open

1413. and then we are able

  1414. to love just like

  1415. he loved us.

  1416. So John tells us

  1417. the necessity

  1418. and the nature

  1419. and the source

  1420. of brotherly love.

  1421. But lastly,

1422. he wants to tell us

  1423. about the assurance

  1424. of brotherly love,

  1425. the assurance.

1426. And this is the last paragraph

  1427. of our passage,

  1428. verses 19 through 24.

  1429. You know,

  1430. what sort of result

  1431. in our lives

  1432. comes about

  1433. when we love

  1434. in this way,

  1435. when we're living

1436. in this kind of love

  1437. in response

  1438. to the gospel,

1439. what then is the dynamic

  1440. in our lives?

  1441. Remember,

1442. John is writing this letter

  1443. to a church

  1444. that's troubled and doubting,

  1445. right?

  1446. They're wondering

  1447. whether or not

1448. they have the real thing

  1449. spiritually.

  1450. And those troubles

  1451. and doubts arose

  1452. because a group

1453. had kind of broken off

  1454. from their midst

  1455. and began teaching

  1456. that Jesus hadn't really

  1457. come in the flesh

  1458. and that the key

  1459. to spirituality

  1460. was secret knowledge

1461. that only they could give,

  1462. right?

  1463. But John wants

1464. to come to this church

  1465. and reassure them.

  1466. He doesn't want them

  1467. to believe those lies

1468. and to live in fear

  1469. and doubt

  1470. that they've missed

  1471. the real thing.

  1472. No,

  1473. he wants them

  1474. to live in joy

  1475. and freedom

  1476. and love

  1477. and confidence

  1478. that they do know

  1479. God in Christ.

  1480. So he writes

  1481. this final paragraph here

1482. so that we might enjoy

  1483. our relationship with God.

  1484. Look at verse 19.

  1485. By this,

  1486. that is,

  1487. by seeing the fruit

  1488. of brotherly love

  1489. in our hearts,

  1490. we shall know

1491. we are of the truth

  1492. and reassure

  1493. our heart before Him.

1494. And we see this evidence

  1495. in our lives,

1496. as we see this evidence

  1497. in our lives,

  1498. it brings assurance.

  1499. And that joyful assurance,

  1500. it does three things,

  1501. as John outlines here.

  1502. First,

  1503. he says it's a bulwark

  1504. against self-condemnation.

  1505. Look at verse 20.

  1506. Whenever our hearts

  1507. condemn us,

  1508. God is greater

  1509. than our heart

  1510. and He knows everything.

  1511. You know,

1512. you might look at your life

  1513. and not see much

  1514. that's spectacular

  1515. or dramatic.

  1516. You might not be

  1517. a great teacher

  1518. of flashy spiritual gifts.

  1519. You might struggle

  1520. to read the Bible.

  1521. Prayer might not

  1522. come naturally to you.

  1523. And at times,

  1524. your heart almost rises

  1525. up against you

  1526. condemning you.

  1527. How can you say

  1528. you're a Christian?

  1529. But John wants

1530. to come alongside of you

  1531. as a loving pastor

  1532. and say,

  1533. no, no, no.

  1534. You're looking

  1535. in the wrong direction.

  1536. What does God say

  1537. is the mark

  1538. of a genuine Christian?

  1539. Flashy spiritual gifts?

  1540. No.

  1541. Ability to teach

  1542. or memorize

  1543. long passages of Scripture?

  1544. No.

  1545. Being able to hold

  1546. all-night prayer vigils?

  1547. No.

  1548. What does God say?

  1549. Verse 23,

1550. and this is His commandment,

  1551. that we believe

  1552. in the name

  1553. of His Son,

  1554. Jesus Christ,

  1555. and love one another

1556. just as He has commanded us.

1557. Are you trusting in Jesus

  1558. and not yourself?

  1559. Are you loving

  1560. your brothers and sisters?

  1561. That's what God says.

  1562. And God is greater

  1563. than your heart

  1564. because God knows everything

1565. and your heart does not.

  1566. Last time I checked.

1567. So when the self-condemnation comes

  1568. with standards and criteria

1569. that aren't in the Bible

  1570. wanting to condemn you,

  1571. look at Jesus.

  1572. Trust in His love.

1573. Then out of that love,

1574. love your brothers and sisters.

  1575. That's the criteria.

  1576. No more, no less.

  1577. But this assurance

  1578. isn't just a bulwark

  1579. against self-condemnation.

  1580. It also, John says,

  1581. brings wonderful confidence

  1582. in prayer.

  1583. Verse 21,

  1584. Beloved,

1585. if our heart does not condemn us,

1586. we have confidence before God.

  1587. And whatever we ask,

  1588. we receive from Him

1589. because we keep His commandments

1590. and do what pleases Him.

1591. And this is His commandment

  1592. that we believe

1593. in the name of His Son,

  1594. Jesus Christ,

  1595. and love one another

1596. just as He has commanded us.

  1597. When you are secure

1598. in your relationship with God,

1599. when you have the assurance

1600. that comes from believing in Christ,

  1601. something powerful happens.

1602. Out of that assurance before God,

  1603. you start to experience

1604. a wonderful freedom in prayer.

1605. That's what the word confidence means here.

  1606. It's sort of freedom

1607. to draw near to God

  1608. and ask Him

1609. whatever is on your heart.

1610. It's like the clouds part,

  1611. the sun shines through,

1612. your soul begins to open up,

  1613. and like a flower

  1614. opening to the skies,

  1615. you just know

  1616. that your Heavenly Father

  1617. loves you

  1618. and He delights

  1619. to hear your prayers.

  1620. And so you go

  1621. and you ask.

1622. And the more you ask,

  1623. the more you find

1624. that God is answering your prayers.

  1625. Why?

1626. Not because God is rewarding you

  1627. for your obedience,

  1628. but because your prayers

1629. start to be more and more

1630. in line with His will.

1631. And so opening our hearts

  1632. to the gospel

1633. and then letting the gospel

  1634. open our hearts

1635. to love our brothers and sisters

  1636. comes full circle

1637. and sends us back to God

  1638. with renewed confidence

1639. and joy before Him in prayer.

  1640. So John says this,

  1641. brotherly love brings assurance.

  1642. Assurance,

  1643. that's a bulwark

  1644. against self-condemnation,

  1645. and it's increasing confidence

  1646. in prayer.

  1647. But lastly,

  1648. he says this assurance

  1649. doesn't just bring

  1650. increasing confidence

  1651. in prayer,

1652. but he says it brings

  1653. richer communion with God.

  1654. Look again

1655. at the end of our passage.

  1656. This is His commandment

  1657. that we believe

1658. in the name of His Son,

  1659. Jesus Christ,

  1660. and love one another

1661. just as He has commanded us.

  1662. Whoever keeps His commandments

  1663. abides in God

  1664. and God in Him.

  1665. And by this,

1666. we know that He abides in us

  1667. by the Spirit

  1668. whom He has given.

  1669. This kind of assurance

1670. that John is talking about

  1671. brings about

  1672. a deeper experience

  1673. of our loving relationship

  1674. and communion with God

  1675. that's honestly hard

  1676. to put into words.

  1677. John says,

  1678. we abide in God

  1679. and God in us.

  1680. Now that's true

  1681. of every Christian.

  1682. The mutual indwelling

1683. of the believer in God

  1684. and shockingly,

  1685. God in the believer.

  1686. That's true

  1687. of every Christian.

1688. But do you and I

  1689. really grasp that?

1690. Do you get a sense

  1691. of that awesome communion

  1692. that you have

  1693. with God in Christ?

1694. Do you have a sense

1695. of that in your soul,

  1696. in your heart?

  1697. John says,

  1698. that sense,

  1699. that deep,

  1700. awesome reality

  1701. starts to become real

  1702. as the Holy Spirit

  1703. does His work.

  1704. by the Spirit

1705. whom He has given us.

  1706. We start to know

1707. that He abides in us.

  1708. And we know it

  1709. not just intellectually,

  1710. but in our affections

  1711. from the heart.

  1712. The Apostle Paul

  1713. describes this work

  1714. of the Spirit

  1715. in Romans 8.

  1716. He says,

  1717. you didn't receive

  1718. the spirit of slavery

1719. to fall back into fear.

  1720. You've received

  1721. the spirit of adoption

  1722. as sons

  1723. by whom we cry,

  1724. Abba,

  1725. Father.

  1726. The Spirit Himself

  1727. bears witness

  1728. with our spirit

  1729. that we are

  1730. children of God.

  1731. John was expressing

  1732. something similar

  1733. when at the beginning

  1734. of chapter 3

  1735. in this book

  1736. he wrote,

  1737. Behold,

  1738. what manner of love

  1739. the Father

  1740. has given to us

  1741. that we should be

  1742. called children of God

  1743. and so we are.

  1744. You can almost hear

  1745. the Apostle John saying,

  1746. Abba,

  1747. Father.

  1748. We are in God

1749. and God is in us.

  1750. Intimate,

  1751. loving communion

  1752. between God

  1753. and His beloved children,

  1754. you and me

  1755. in Christ.

  1756. This is what assurance

  1757. brings,

  1758. this deep experience

  1759. of this reality

  1760. of our communion

  1761. with God.

  1762. So the assurance

  1763. of brotherly love,

  1764. it silences

  1765. self-condemnation,

  1766. it opens the doors

  1767. of confidence

  1768. and prayer,

  1769. and it deepens

  1770. our experience

  1771. of communion

  1772. with God.

  1773. Friends,

  1774. are these not

  1775. great motivations?

  1776. Are these not

  1777. great things

  1778. to long for

  1779. and desire more of?

  1780. Are these not

  1781. great motivations

  1782. for us to set

  1783. our eyes on Jesus,

  1784. to behold how much

  1785. He has loved us,

  1786. and then to turn

  1787. and to love

  1788. one another?

  1789. This is the message

  1790. we've heard

  1791. from the beginning,

  1792. that we should love

  1793. one another.

  1794. Let's pray.

  1795. Holy Spirit,

  1796. would you come?

  1797. Shine the spotlight

1798. on the work of Jesus,

  1799. transform our hearts,

  1800. and let us taste

  1801. this rich assurance

  1802. that comes

  1803. from knowing Christ

  1804. and loving one another.

  1805. Lord,

  1806. for those

  1807. who have been

  1808. troubled by this passage

  1809. because they don't see

  1810. the love of Christ

  1811. in their hearts,

  1812. Lord,

1813. would that not lead them

1814. to turn away from you,

1815. but to run toward you.

  1816. Jesus,

  1817. you say you stand

  1818. at the door

  1819. and you knock,

  1820. and if we open,

  1821. you will come in

  1822. and eat with us,

  1823. feast with us.

  1824. So God,

  1825. I pray

  1826. that the opening

  1827. of that door

  1828. would be happening,

  1829. that you would grant

  1830. saving faith

  1831. to those

  1832. who are uncertain

  1833. of where they stand

  1834. with you,

  1835. and let them leave

  1836. today confident

  1837. of your love

  1838. for them in Jesus.

  1839. Amen.
