  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. It's good to be with you all this morning.

  3. Let me invite you to turn to our sermon text,

  4. which is in the book of 1 John, chapter 5, verses 1 through 5.

    1 John 5:1–5

  5. That's page 961 in the Pew Bible, if you want to follow along there.

  6. I encourage you to have it open while we look at this text this morning.

  7. 1 John 5, verses 1 through 5.

    1 John 5:1–5

  8. All right, let me pray, and then I'll read for us.

  9. Father, as we pause for just a moment this morning

  10. on the cusp of attending to your word,

  11. we acknowledge that without your Holy Spirit

  12. and without your presence,

  13. Lord, we can do nothing.

  14. That's of lasting spiritual value.

  15. That's of lasting good in your kingdom.

  16. And yet we also rejoice

  17. that you, our ascended Lord Jesus,

  18. have poured out your Holy Spirit without measure,

  19. and you delight to work and fulfill all your good promises

  20. to the praise of your name.

  21. So we ask for you, God,

  22. to come and make good on your promises,

  23. to speak through your word,

  24. to sanctify your people,

  25. to grow your church

  26. as we listen to your word this morning.

  27. And we ask this in Jesus' name.

  28. Amen.

  29. All right.

  30. 1 John chapter 5.

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  31. Apostle John writes this.

  32. He says,

  33. For this is the love of God,

  34. that we keep His commandments.

  35. And His commandments are not burdensome,

  36. for everyone who has been born of God

  37. overcomes the world.

  38. And this is the victory that has overcome the world,

  39. our faith.

  40. Who is it that overcomes the world

  41. except the one who believes that Jesus

  42. is the Son of God?

  43. Well, if you've been following our sermon series this summer,

  44. you'll notice that this paragraph of 1 John

  45. covers a lot of familiar territory, doesn't it?

  46. We find again here in these short couple of verses

  47. that John highlights yet again

  48. these three marks of genuine Christianity

  49. that he's been just weaving throughout this book.

  50. The three marks of belief in Jesus,

  51. that He is the Christ, the Son of God,

  52. come in the flesh.

  53. The other mark, the second mark,

  54. of love for the people of God.

  55. And then the third mark of obedience

  56. to God's commands.

  57. John has been weaving throughout this book

  58. the message that it takes all three of these

  59. woven together to really be a sign

  60. of genuine faith in Christ.

  61. Take any of these three away

  62. and you don't have real faith.

  63. Now, up to this point in the book,

  64. John has been especially warning

  65. against a lack of love

  66. for one's fellow Christians.

  67. For almost a chapter and a half,

  68. maybe more,

  69. John has been saying that it's possible

  70. to believe all the right things,

  71. even keep many of God's commands,

  72. but without love,

  73. it's not genuine faith at all.

  74. A loveless Christianity

  75. is no Christianity at all.

  76. And John restates that important truth

  77. in our text in verse 1.

  78. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ

  79. has been born of God,

  80. and everyone who loves the Father

  81. loves whoever has been born of him.

  82. In fact, the way,

  83. if you have an older version,

  84. it might translate that verse

  85. a little more literally

  86. to say,

  87. everyone who loves the begetter

  88. loves those who have been begotten of him.

  89. But in the rest of this paragraph,

  90. John wants us to see

  91. that the opposite is also true.

  92. He wants us to see

  93. not just that loveless Christianity

  94. is no Christianity at all,

  95. that we need to love

  96. and keep the commandments.

  97. He wants us also to see

  98. that loving without keeping God's commandments

  99. isn't really love.

  100. If we say that we love someone,

  101. but we don't keep God's commandments,

  102. it isn't really love.

  103. Look at verse 2.

  104. By this we know that we love

  105. the children of God.

  106. How?

  107. How do we know if we really love them?

  108. When we love God

  109. and obey his commandments.

  110. So John's going to show us two things

  111. in this short paragraph of the letter.

  112. First, he's going to show us

  113. that obedience is the mark of real love.

  114. Obedience is the mark of real love.

  115. But he doesn't just leave it there.

  116. He goes on then to show us, second,

  117. that faith is the power of joyful obedience.

  118. So that's what we're going to cover this morning.

  119. Obedience is the mark of real love,

  120. and faith in Christ

  121. is the power of joyful obedience.

  122. Let's spend a little time

  123. considering that first point.

  124. Obedience is the mark of real love.

  125. We have to admit that verse 2,

  126. it hits us as a bit of a surprise,

  127. doesn't it?

  128. I mean, how would you fill in that blank?

  129. By this we know that we love the children of God.

  130. How do we know?

  131. What is it that demonstrates

  132. or exemplifies our love

  133. for our fellow Christians?

  134. How would you fill in that blank?

  135. Now the world, of course,

  136. can make us think

  137. that real love

  138. is nothing more and nothing less

  139. than just total affirmation, right?

  140. Whatever you want or desire,

  141. that's what you should have,

  142. and if someone loves you,

  143. they won't stand in your way.

  144. The worldly understanding of love

  145. sometimes just

  146. falls into utter permissiveness.

  147. But of course,

  148. it doesn't take long to realize

  149. that this path of complete permissiveness

  150. eventually leads to heartache

  151. and ruin, doesn't it?

  152. I mean, there are real limits

  153. that we have to embrace.

  154. As much as I would like to,

  155. I cannot eat a diet

  156. of nothing but cheesecake

  157. and Diet Coke.

  158. I mean, I could probably go

  159. for a few days, trust me,

  160. especially if it's Japanese cheesecake.

  161. Have you ever had this stuff?

  162. It's delicious.

  163. But eventually, you know,

  164. it's just not going to work.

  165. And my family would simply

  166. be participating in my foolishness

  167. to pretend that I could ignore

  168. those limits

  169. and genuinely flourish.

  170. So loving someone inevitably

  171. at times will involve

  172. saying no.

  173. Real love isn't mere affirmation.

  174. Sometimes real love means disagreement

  175. or correction,

  176. even rebuke.

  177. So what is the mark

  178. of genuine love?

  179. If we disagree

  180. with the world's definition,

  181. what do we typically put

  182. in its place?

  183. Well, perhaps our minds

  184. go back to chapter 3

  185. of 1 John.

  186. Remember there,

  187. in that part of the letter,

  188. John defines the nature of love

  189. as sacrificial service.

  190. Do you remember that?

  191. We identify needs

  192. and we meet those needs

  193. with the resources

  194. that God has given us.

  195. 1 John 3, 16 through 18,

  196. he says,

  197. By this we know love,

  198. that he laid down his life for us

  199. and we ought to lay down

  200. our lives for the brothers.

  201. But if anyone has the world's good

  202. and sees his brother in need

  203. yet closes his heart against him,

  204. how does God's love abide in him?

  205. Little children,

  206. let us not love in word or talk,

  207. but in deed and in truth.

  208. Now there are probably few

  209. other paragraphs

  210. in the New Testament

  211. that give us

  212. as concise a picture

  213. of genuine Christian love

  214. as that one.

  215. But we do need to be careful.

  216. We need to be careful

  217. because it's very easy for us

  218. to really be operating

  219. with the world's understanding of love,

  220. but then just kind of baptize it

  221. with a Christian veneer.

  222. We think we're exercising Christian love,

  223. we think we're genuinely loving

  224. our brothers and sisters,

  225. but in reality,

  226. we're just operating in the mode

  227. of mere affirmation

  228. or mere permissiveness.

  229. We may be sacrificially

  230. meeting their needs,

  231. but in reality,

  232. we're just doing it

  233. out of that same kind

  234. of operating system

  235. of permissiveness.

  236. How do we know

  237. if we are loving

  238. in deed and in truth?

  239. Well, this is where

  240. John chapter 5 helps us

    John 5 chapter mention

  241. when he says,

  242. by this we know

  243. that we love the children of God,

  244. when we love God

  245. and obey His commandments.

  246. You see,

  247. the commandments of God

  248. are like the pathways of love.

  249. If we live in those commands

  250. and if we encourage others

  251. to do the same,

  252. then we are on the sure road

  253. of loving each other

  254. in deed and in truth.

  255. after all,

  256. God's commandments

  257. are God's commandments,

  258. right?

  259. And John has just told us

  260. in chapter 4, verse 8,

  261. that God is love.

  262. And if God is love,

  263. then His commandments

  264. must be utterly loving.

  265. They are the sure pathways

  266. of love.

  267. Now let's apply this

  268. in two ways then.

  269. First,

  270. if obedience to God's commands

  271. is the mark of love,

  272. then it's never loving

  273. to encourage someone

  274. or affirm someone

  275. in disobeying them.

  276. You know,

  277. if you saw your best friend

  278. about to pour vegetable oil

  279. in the gas tank

  280. of their car,

  281. you know,

  282. what would you do?

  283. I mean,

  284. you'd probably say,

  285. hey, you know,

  286. that's probably not a good idea.

  287. I don't think your engine

  288. is going to run on that,

  289. right?

  290. But then if your friend

  291. turned to you and said,

  292. but you know,

  293. it just feels so right

  294. to just pour it in there.

  295. I think it's going to work.

  296. I read some articles

  297. on the internet.

  298. All my friends are doing it.

  299. You know,

  300. you're really the one

  301. who's out of step here,

  302. right?

  303. Well, you know,

  304. even if your friend

  305. responded that way,

  306. you'd probably still say

  307. if you're a good friend,

  308. look,

  309. I know that's what

  310. a lot of people are saying

  311. and I know you saw it

  312. on TikTok,

  313. but trust me,

  314. the engine's not going to work

  315. on vegetable oil.

  316. You see,

  317. the commands of God,

  318. they're like the blueprint

  319. of love.

  320. They tell us exactly

  321. how the human heart

  322. is created to work best.

  323. So it's never loving

  324. to just go along

  325. when a fellow Christian

  326. is disobeying God's commands.

  327. Now, of course,

  328. there are helpful

  329. and unhelpful ways

  330. to approach

  331. a fellow church member

  332. who is stepping outside

  333. of God's commands,

  334. right?

  335. Listen to how

  336. the Apostle Paul

  337. describes the right approach

  338. in Galatians chapter 6.

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  339. In Galatians 6,

  340. 1,

  341. Paul says,

  342. brothers and sisters,

  343. if anyone is caught

  344. in any transgression,

  345. and caught there

  346. means like stuck

  347. or trapped.

  348. So if you come across

  349. someone who seems

  350. to be stuck

  351. or trapped

  352. in disobeying God's commands

  353. and transgression,

  354. he says,

  355. you who are spiritual,

  356. that is,

  357. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  358. should restore him

  359. in a spirit

  360. of gentleness.

  361. Gentleness.

  362. And then he says,

  363. keep watch on yourself

  364. lest you too be tempted.

  365. Bear one another's burdens

  366. and so fulfill

  367. the law of Christ.

  368. So notice

  369. what the right approach is.

  370. The right approach

  371. is marked by gentleness,

  372. right?

  373. We want to restore

  374. our brother or sister,

  375. not condemn them.

  376. And it's marked

  377. by humility.

  378. We recognize

  379. that we too

  380. are tempted.

  381. We're not above

  382. this battle,

  383. this struggle.

  384. And according to Paul,

  385. it's also marked

  386. by compassion.

  387. We're willing to bear

  388. one another's burdens.

  389. We're willing to do

  390. what it takes

  391. to come alongside

  392. our brother or sister

  393. and help them get out

  394. of whatever mess

  395. they're stuck in,

  396. even if it takes

  397. some sacrifice

  398. on our part.

  399. So this is one application

  400. of what John's saying here.

  401. If obedience

  402. to God's commands

  403. is the mark of love,

  404. then we need to be willing

  405. to do this gentle work

  406. of correction

  407. and not merely be affirming

  408. when a brother or sister

  409. strays from God's commands.

  410. But there's another application.

  411. If obedience

  412. to God's commands

  413. is a mark of love,

  414. then the pursuit

  415. of personal holiness

  416. is a critical component

  417. to loving your fellow Christians well.

  418. In other words,

  419. if you want to love well,

  420. then pursue holiness,

  421. Christ-likeness,

  422. pursue obedience

  423. in your own life.

  424. The 19th century

  425. Scottish pastor

  426. Robert Murray McShane

  427. famously said,

  428. the greatest need

  429. of my people

  430. is my personal holiness.

  431. Speaking about his role

  432. as a pastor,

  433. the greatest need

  434. of my people

  435. isn't his great preaching,

  436. isn't his wonderful

  437. pastoral care.

  438. Those are great.

  439. but his personal holiness.

  440. Now,

  441. this 19th century pastor

  442. wasn't being conceited

  443. when he said that.

  444. He knew

  445. that the greatest gift

  446. that we can give

  447. to each other

  448. in the family of God

  449. is our sanctified lives.

  450. For when we are

  451. pursuing holiness,

  452. it is then

  453. that we speak

  454. the truth in love.

  455. It is then

  456. that we give generously.

  457. It is then

  458. that we're patient

  459. and kind

  460. and humble

  461. and steadfast

  462. and faithful

  463. and gentle.

  464. But more than that,

  465. when we pursue

  466. personal righteousness,

  467. personal holiness,

  468. when we seek

  469. to obey God's commands,

  470. then our lives

  471. begin to

  472. begin to become

  473. like reflections

  474. of the love of God.

  475. our lives

  476. begin to shine forth

  477. with the character

  478. of God.

  479. Remember,

  480. the commandments

  481. of God

  482. are God's commandments.

  483. They're the pathways

  484. of love.

  485. And as we live

  486. in line

  487. with his commands,

  488. we begin to radiate

  489. more and more

  490. of the character

  491. of God.

  492. And then the aroma

  493. of Christ,

  494. the great lover

  495. of our souls,

  496. begins to fill

  497. our life together.

  498. And that,

  499. friends,

  500. is an end

  501. in itself.

  502. To enjoy

  503. the glorious

  504. display of Christ

  505. in each other.

  506. Like the sunlight

  507. that shines

  508. through the stained

  509. glass windows

  510. that kind of shines

  511. with a hundred

  512. different colors.

  513. This is the church

  514. that's pursuing

  515. righteousness

  516. and holiness.

  517. It shines

  518. with the glory

  519. of Christ.

  520. And that means

  521. as we pursue

  522. holiness,

  523. we become more

  524. than just examples

  525. or encouragements

  526. to one another.

  527. Of course,

  528. we are that.

  529. But more than that,

  530. we're not just

  531. a moral example

  532. for others to follow,

  533. but we become

  534. a foretaste

  535. of the glory

  536. of Christ together.

  537. A foretaste

  538. of the glory

  539. of Christ

  540. that will one day

  541. be revealed

  542. in full

  543. when he returns.

  544. Remember the beginning

  545. of John chapter 3?

    John 3 chapter mention

  546. John says,

  547. Beloved,

  548. we are God's children

  549. now,

  550. and what we will be

  551. has not yet appeared,

  552. but we know

  553. that when he appears,

  554. we shall be like him

  555. because we shall see him

  556. as he is.

  557. And then John adds this,

  558. and everyone

  559. who thus hopes

  560. in him

  561. purifies himself

  562. even as he is pure.

  563. Looking forward

  564. to that great day

  565. when Christ is revealed

  566. in glory

  567. and we participate

  568. in it,

  569. we long

  570. to start now.

  571. So obedience

  572. is the mark

  573. of real love

  574. for one another.

  575. Not just love

  576. for God,

  577. but love for each other

  578. as well.

  579. But that leads

  580. to a question,

  581. doesn't it?

  582. A question of

  583. where we get the power

  584. to actually live out

  585. God's commands.

  586. Where do we get the power?

  587. Where do we get the energy

  588. to not just begrudgingly

  589. go along

  590. with God's commands,

  591. but to joyfully

  592. obey them?

  593. Because we have to admit

  594. that at times,

  595. at times,

  596. God's commandments

  597. don't feel

  598. like the pathways

  599. of love,

  600. do they?

  601. At times,

  602. God's commands

  603. feel burdensome.

  604. But John is reminding us

  605. that it doesn't have

  606. to be that way.

  607. Let's pick up

  608. our passage

  609. in verse 3.

  610. John writes,

  611. for this is the love

  612. of God

  613. that we keep

  614. his commandments,

  615. and his commandments

  616. are not burdensome.

  617. For everyone

  618. who has been born

  619. of God

  620. overcomes the world.

  621. And this is the victory

  622. that has overcome

  623. the world,

  624. our faith.

  625. Who is it

  626. that overcomes

  627. the world

  628. except the one

  629. who believes

  630. that Jesus

  631. is the Son of God?

  632. Faith in Jesus Christ,

  633. John says,

  634. is the power

  635. of joyful obedience

  636. because through faith

  637. in Christ,

  638. we overcome

  639. the world.

  640. Now, what exactly

  641. does that mean?

  642. We overcome

  643. the world.

  644. Well, earlier

  645. in the letter,

  646. you'll remember

  647. that the Apostle John

  648. described the world

  649. like this.

  650. He said,

  651. all that is in the world,

  652. the desires

  653. of the flesh

  654. and the desires

  655. of the eyes

  656. and the pride

  657. of life,

  658. it's not from the Father

  659. but from the world,

  660. and the world

  661. is passing away

  662. along with its desires,

  663. but whoever does

  664. the will of God

  665. abides forever.

  666. Okay, so when John

  667. talks about the world

  668. in this book,

  669. he's talking about

  670. human life lived

  671. according to our

  672. merely self-centered

  673. or human-centered desires.

  674. That's the world.

  675. Human life lived,

  676. human society arranged

  677. according to our

  678. merely human-centered desires.

  679. and that becomes

  680. like a vortex

  681. that leads ultimately

  682. to a place,

  683. John says,

  684. of wanting

  685. what you don't have,

  686. that's the desire

  687. of the eyes,

  688. and boasting

  689. in what you do,

  690. the pride of life.

  691. And it becomes

  692. like this never-ending

  693. pendulum

  694. back and forth

  695. at the one end

  696. suffering from

  697. a feeling of

  698. radical insignificance,

  699. always wanting,

  700. always wanting

  701. because there's

  702. always someone

  703. who's richer

  704. or smarter

  705. or prettier

  706. or more talented

  707. and feeling like

  708. you need it

  709. or you want it

  710. and you're so

  711. radically insignificant.

  712. But then,

  713. because you can't

  714. live there for long,

  715. you swing the other way

  716. to a feeling

  717. of radical superiority,

  718. the pride of life

  719. because surely

  720. you're at least

  721. better than that person

  722. or that person

  723. or that person

  724. or that person

  725. and back and forth

  726. you go.

  727. the desires

  728. of the eyes,

  729. the pride of life,

  730. from radical insecurity

  731. to radical superiority.

  732. Back and forth

  733. you go.

  734. But how do you

  735. overcome it?

  736. How do you get free

  737. from the constant need

  738. to build your identity

  739. on what you own

  740. or what you've accomplished?

  741. How do you overcome

  742. what John calls

  743. the world

  744. and all the world's desires

  745. that run counter to God

  746. and make God's commands

  747. seem so burdensome?

  748. I mean,

  749. after all,

  750. think about it.

  751. If the world says,

  752. build your identity

  753. on what you possess

  754. or what you accomplish,

  755. that's your drive

  756. in life.

  757. Then the commands

  758. of God come

  759. and they do feel

  760. like a burden.

  761. They feel like

  762. an intruder.

  763. They're playing

  764. a totally different tune

  765. than the world

  766. is playing.

  767. But what if you could

  768. overcome those desires

  769. of the world?

  770. What if you could

  771. break free from them?

  772. What if you could

  773. get off the pendulum swing

  774. and no longer

  775. be their slave?

  776. What if your life

  777. wasn't ruled

  778. by a gnawing insecurity

  779. or insignificance anymore?

  780. What if your life

  781. wasn't justified

  782. by how accomplished

  783. or successful you were?

  784. What if you had been

  785. set free from all that?

  786. John says,

  787. it's not just possible

  788. to be liberated

  789. from the world.

  790. It's not just possible

  791. to overcome it.

  792. He says,

  793. it's already happened.

  794. The one who believes

  795. that Jesus is the Son of God

  796. has already overcome

  797. the world.

  798. This is the victory

  799. that overcomes the world.

  800. Our faith,

  801. not just faith in general,

  802. but faith in Jesus Christ,

  803. the risen Son of God.

  804. But how is that so?

  805. In what way does faith

  806. in Christ mean

  807. our victory

  808. over the world?

  809. Well, let's pause

  810. and meditate for a moment.

  811. Consider first

  812. what faith in Christ means

  813. about your past.

  814. The world, friends,

  815. wants you to live

  816. in constant guilt

  817. and shame

  818. because the more

  819. you live in guilt

  820. and shame

  821. and regret,

  822. the more you will buy things

  823. to fill the hole

  824. in your soul.

  825. So it's very convenient

  826. for the world

  827. to keep you guilty

  828. and regretful

  829. and ashamed

  830. so that you continue

  831. to churn the wheel

  832. of consumerism.

  833. But friends,

  834. Christ has forgiven

  835. your sins

  836. through His death

  837. on the cross,

  838. through His blood

  839. shed for you.

  840. He's taken your past

  841. and wiped it clean.

  842. You don't need to pay

  843. for your sins

  844. and mistakes.

  845. You don't need to keep

  846. trying to live them down.

  847. You've been released

  848. through His death

  849. and resurrection

  850. on your behalf.

  851. and your status

  852. is now secure.

  853. The verdict

  854. has been cast

  855. over your life

  856. before the only court

  857. that matters.

  858. In the eyes

  859. of God,

  860. the Creator

  861. and the Redeemer,

  862. you are forgiven

  863. and loved.

  864. The only gavel

  865. that matters

  866. in the cosmos

  867. has come down

  868. and it is said

  869. you're forgiven

  870. and you're loved

  871. and you're accepted

  872. because my Son

  873. paid the price

  874. for you.

  875. Your slate is clean.

  876. And if that's

  877. what's true

  878. when you're united

  879. to Christ,

  880. if that's what's true

  881. of your past,

  882. then the commands

  883. of God

  884. are no longer

  885. burdensome rules.

  886. They're no longer

  887. burdensome rules

  888. whereby we try

  889. to earn heavenly favor

  890. or get back

  891. into God's good graces.

  892. No!

  893. God has already

  894. justified us

  895. in Christ.

  896. The commands

  897. aren't there

  898. so that we can

  899. earn God's favor.

  900. They're there

  901. so that we can

  902. run in the pathway

  903. of His love.

  904. So that we can

  905. live a life

  906. of love

  907. to the God

  908. who gave His only Son

  909. to make us His children

  910. and welcome us home.

  911. Consider what

  912. faith in Christ

  913. means not just

  914. about your past

  915. but about your future.

  916. fear.

  917. The world wants you

  918. to live in constant

  919. anxiety and fear.

  920. Fear that you'll

  921. miss out.

  922. Anxiety that you've

  923. got to live your

  924. best life now

  925. and not miss out

  926. on a single opportunity.

  927. You've got to leave

  928. all your options open

  929. for as long as possible

  930. because you never

  931. want to close the door

  932. because you might

  933. miss something.

  934. Isn't this the,

  935. isn't this the tale

  936. that the world tells?

  937. But friends,

  938. the resurrection

  939. of Jesus Christ

  940. shatters

  941. that limited perspective.

  942. When Jesus Christ

  943. rose from the grave,

  944. He inaugurated,

  945. He began

  946. the new creation.

  947. It was the first fruits.

  948. It was the swinging

  949. open of the door

  950. of a healed

  951. and restored creation.

  952. A creation without death.

  953. A creation without decay.

  954. A creation without loss.

  955. A creation that isn't

  956. winding down

  957. under its own steam,

  958. but a creation

  959. that's being remade

  960. and made new.

  961. And so for those

  962. in Christ,

  963. the future is not

  964. a clock that's running out.

  965. So we better get

  966. as much as we can.

  967. We better get as much

  968. pleasure before it's too late.

  969. No!

  970. For those in Christ,

  971. it's not a clock

  972. that's winding down.

  973. The future is an

  974. ever-expanding horizon.

  975. The future for the believer

  976. in Christ

  977. is the dawn of a day

  978. that will not end.

  979. where the beauties

  980. of this life

  981. are seen to be

  982. just a foretaste

  983. of even greater

  984. glories to come.

  985. And so the commands

  986. of God

  987. are not

  988. burdensome

  989. distractions

  990. or cosmic

  991. killjoys

  992. keeping us

  993. from having fun

  994. while this fleeting

  995. life

  996. lasts.

  997. No,

  998. the commands

  999. of God

  1000. are like the blueprint

  1001. of the new creation.

  1002. They are paths

  1003. of joy

  1004. on a road

  1005. that stretches out

  1006. into eternal life.

  1007. Do you think

  1008. you will miss out

  1009. on joy

  1010. if you follow

  1011. God's commands?

  1012. No

  1013. is the answer.

  1014. No.

  1015. But last,

  1016. consider what faith

  1017. in Christ

  1018. means not just

  1019. about your past

  1020. or your future

  1021. but your present.

  1022. The world

  1023. wants you to build

  1024. your right now

  1025. identity

  1026. on consumption

  1027. and performance.

  1028. You are what you

  1029. purchase,

  1030. you are what you

  1031. produce,

  1032. you are what you

  1033. achieve,

  1034. but faith in Christ

  1035. means a whole

  1036. new identity.

  1037. Everyone who

  1038. believes that

  1039. Jesus is the Christ

  1040. has been born

  1041. of God.

  1042. You are right now

  1043. a child of God

  1044. in Christ,

  1045. a son,

  1046. a daughter

  1047. of the King.

  1048. Apart from

  1049. your production,

  1050. apart from

  1051. your possessions,

  1052. you have the

  1053. most dignified

  1054. identity

  1055. in the universe

  1056. and it has

  1057. nothing to do

  1058. with that.

  1059. So you don't

  1060. need to play

  1061. the world's games

  1062. anymore.

  1063. Jesus once

  1064. said,

  1065. a man's life

  1066. does not

  1067. consist in

  1068. the abundance

  1069. of his

  1070. possessions,

  1071. nor does it

  1072. consist in

  1073. the abundance

  1074. of worldly

  1075. approval or

  1076. applause.

  1077. Friends in

  1078. Christ,

  1079. you are part

  1080. of a new

  1081. kingdom

  1082. now,

  1083. a new

  1084. reign,

  1085. a new

  1086. movement,

  1087. a new way

  1088. of doing

  1089. things.

  1090. And God's

  1091. commands aren't

  1092. burdensome,

  1093. just the

  1094. opposite.

  1095. They are

  1096. freedom and

  1097. life.

  1098. They are the

  1099. ways of the

  1100. kingdom for

  1101. the sons and

  1102. daughters of

  1103. the King

  1104. right now.

  1105. So friends,

  1106. it's faith.

  1107. It's faith in

  1108. Jesus that is

  1109. the victory

  1110. that overcomes

  1111. the world.

  1112. And it's

  1113. that that

  1114. empowers

  1115. joyful

  1116. obedience.

  1117. And through

  1118. joyful obedience,

  1119. genuine love.

  1120. Jesus is the

  1121. crucified and

  1122. risen Son of

  1123. God.

  1124. He is the

  1125. victor over

  1126. sin and

  1127. death and

  1128. condemnation.

  1129. Jesus'

  1130. glory will

  1131. not fade or

  1132. perish.

  1133. His kingdom

  1134. will know no

  1135. end.

  1136. His word will

  1137. endure for

  1138. eternity.

  1139. And in the

  1140. new heavens and

  1141. the new earth,

  1142. His commands

  1143. will be seen

  1144. as what they

  1145. truly are,

  1146. by everyone.

  1147. The expression

  1148. of perfect

  1149. love.

  1150. The will of

  1151. a King whose

  1152. name is love

  1153. and whose life

  1154. cannot be

  1155. diminished.

  1156. So church,

  1157. let's live

  1158. these commands

  1159. now.

  1160. Out of

  1161. grateful love

  1162. for Christ

  1163. who saved

  1164. us, united

  1165. to Him by

  1166. faith, let's

  1167. follow His

  1168. commands in

  1169. love, overcoming

  1170. the world and

  1171. its lives

  1172. through Him

  1173. and through

  1174. faith in His

  1175. name.

  1176. Let's pray.

  1177. Father, we

  1178. take just a

  1179. moment and we

  1180. pause before

  1181. You.

  1182. God, we

  1183. admit, God, that

  1184. oftentimes we

  1185. become so

  1186. confused, it's

  1187. so easy for us

  1188. to slide as

  1189. Christians back

  1190. into thinking

  1191. that it is our

  1192. obedience that

  1193. earns Your

  1194. favor, and then

  1195. Your commands do

  1196. become burdensome.

  1197. Father, by Your

  1198. Holy Spirit right

  1199. now, would You

  1200. come and remind

  1201. us again of

  1202. the gospel of

  1203. grace, that we

  1204. are forgiven and

  1205. accepted by

  1206. grace, and we

  1207. are set free to

  1208. then obey.

  1209. But Father, we

  1210. also acknowledge

  1211. this morning that

  1212. for those apart

  1213. from Christ, for

  1214. those outside of

  1215. Him, for those who

  1216. have not put

  1217. their trust in

  1218. Him.

  1219. Lord, the

  1220. realities of the

  1221. world are all

  1222. that remain.

  1223. Lord, I pray

  1224. that if there are

  1225. any here this

  1226. morning who are

  1227. not in Christ and

  1228. have not tasted of

  1229. the joy and

  1230. freedom that come

  1231. through His

  1232. forgiving grace,

  1233. God, I pray that

  1234. this morning would

  1235. be the day of

  1236. salvation for

  1237. them, and that

  1238. by Your Holy

  1239. Spirit, You

  1240. would pour into

  1241. their hearts this

  1242. faith that

  1243. overcomes the

  1244. world, this

  1245. faith in Jesus.

  1246. God, cause them

  1247. to be born again

  1248. that they might

  1249. believe.

  1250. And Lord, would

  1251. they reach out to

  1252. You, take hold

  1253. of You, and

  1254. know that any

  1255. who come to

  1256. You, any who

  1257. come to You, You

  1258. will in no

  1259. wise cast out,

  1260. because You

  1261. are a God of

  1262. mercy.

  1263. Lastly, Jesus, we

  1264. pray that we

  1265. would live in

  1266. this victory, we

  1267. would live in

  1268. this joy, we

  1269. would live in

  1270. this celebration

  1271. that You have

  1272. overcome, and we

  1273. have overcome in

  1274. You.

  1275. Be glorified in our

  1276. lives and our

  1277. church, Father.

  1278. We pray.

  1279. Father, we

  1280. pray.

  1281. Amen.

  1282. Amen.

  1283. Amen.

  1284. Amen.

  1285. Amen.

  1286. Amen.

  1287. Amen.

  1288. Amen.

  1289. Amen.

  1290. Amen.

  1291. Amen.

  1292. Amen.

  1293. Amen.

  1294. Amen.

  1295. Amen.

  1296. Amen.

  1297. Amen.

  1298. Amen.

  1299. Amen.

  1300. Amen.

  1301. Amen.

  1302. Amen.

  1303. Amen.

  1304. Amen.

  1305. Amen.
