  1. And friends, in just a few minutes, we're going to have a baptism.

  2. But before that, we're going to turn to God's Word.

  3. So would you turn with me to Revelation chapter 1.

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  4. That's page 965 in the Pew Bible.

  5. We began our Revelation series last week with an introduction,

  6. looking at verses 1 through 8.

  7. And there we saw that this book is for the servants of God,

  8. that is, all followers of Jesus.

  9. And we saw that this book is from the triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  10. And lastly, we saw that the book is ultimately about Jesus Christ and God's kingdom.

  11. So we're going to pick up where we left off last week at verse 9 of chapter 1

  12. and go through the rest of the chapter.

  13. So let me pray as we turn to God's Word together.

  14. God, indeed, you have no rival and you have no equal.

  15. You are the first and the last, the beginning and the end,

  16. the one who is and who was and who is to come.

  17. And we praise you this morning.

  18. We thank you for the deep privilege that it is to open up your Word

  19. and to hear what you are saying to us,

  20. that we might behold you in your glory and worship you

  21. and live lives for you and for your kingdom and the power of your Spirit.

  22. Jesus, all of this is possible because of you,

  23. because of your incarnation, for your perfect life,

  24. for your death, for your resurrection,

  25. for the fact that you're ascended and seated at the Father's right hand

  26. and coming in glory and we give you praise.

  27. Help us now as we understand this Word that you've given to us,

  28. your church.

  29. In your mighty name we pray.

  30. Amen.

  31. All right.

  32. Revelation chapter 1, verses 9 through 20.

    Revelation 1:9–20

  33. Let me read this for us.

  34. I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom

  35. and the patient endurance that are in Jesus,

  36. was on the island called Patmos on account of the Word of God

  37. and the testimony of Jesus.

  38. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day

  39. and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying,

  40. write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches,

  41. to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira

  42. and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.

  43. Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me

  44. and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands

  45. and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man

  46. clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.

  47. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow.

  48. His eyes were like a flame of fire.

  49. His feet were like burnished bronze refined in a furnace

  50. and his voice was like the roar of many waters.

  51. In his right hand he held seven stars.

  52. From his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword

  53. and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

  54. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.

  55. But he laid his right hand on me saying,

  56. Fear not.

  57. I am the first and the last and the living one.

  58. I died and behold, I am alive forevermore.

  59. And I have the keys of death and Hades.

  60. Write therefore the things that you have seen,

  61. those that are,

  62. and those that are to take place after this.

  63. As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand

  64. and the seven golden lampstands,

  65. the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches

  66. and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

  67. This is God's Word.

  68. So, when you're facing a problem

  69. or when you're facing a trial

  70. or even suffering of some kind,

  71. what's the one thing that you need?

  72. Well, perhaps you'd say,

  73. The one thing I really want is for the problem to go away, right?

  74. I want the suffering to stop.

  75. But if that doesn't happen in the midst of pain, suffering, and trial,

  76. what's the most important thing you can have?

  77. And that's really what our text is pointing us toward.

  78. But before we look there,

  79. what are some of the things you might say you need?

  80. Perhaps the presence of caring and supportive friends,

  81. people to walk with you.

  82. That's a good thing.

  83. Or maybe a strategy for overcoming the trial,

  84. a plan to eliminate the source of pain.

  85. Nothing wrong with that.

  86. If you're jobless,

  87. you need a good resume workshop maybe

  88. and a few practice interviews.

  89. If your marriage is in trouble,

  90. a good marriage counselor

  91. and some communication exercises to work on.

  92. Some sort of strategy in the midst of trial.

  93. Or, you know, on the other hand,

  94. maybe the one thing you really want or really need

  95. is answers, right?

  96. Some sort of reason

  97. why you're going through what you're going through

  98. or at least some potential reasons

  99. to help you understand why

  100. or what's really going on.

  101. And of course, all these are good things, right?

  102. They're not bad in themselves.

  103. But our text today points us to something even greater.

  104. It points us to the most important thing

  105. for us to have

  106. when we're in the midst of trial

  107. or about to undergo some sort of trial.

  108. And if I were to put it simply,

  109. what Revelation 1, 9 through 20 is telling us is this.

  110. What a suffering Christian,

  111. what a suffering church needs most

  112. is a renewed vision of the glory of Christ.

  113. When we're facing trials

  114. or when we're about to face trials,

  115. what we need more than anything else

  116. is a renewed vision of the glory of Christ.

  117. So let's take some time to unpack that.

  118. The first thing we see in our passage

  119. in verses 9 through 11

  120. is we see the fact that Christians indeed suffer.

  121. They face trials or problems or persecutions.

  122. They experience distress and loss.

  123. Look again at verse 9.

  124. I, John, that is the Apostle John,

  125. he says,

  126. your brother and partner,

  127. that is someone who shares deeply

  128. in something together with you,

  129. your partner.

  130. In what?

  131. In the tribulation and the kingdom

  132. and the patient endurance

  133. that are in Jesus.

  134. Look at those last three concepts,

  135. tribulation, kingdom, endurance in Jesus.

  136. This is how John is summarizing the Christian life.

  137. First, tribulation.

  138. That word means suffering, distress, intense hardship.

  139. As a follower of Jesus,

  140. there will be trial and hardship

  141. and often on account of being a follower of Jesus.

  142. Look at the rest of verse 9.

  143. He says,

  144. I was on the island called Patmos

  145. on account of the word of God

  146. and the testimony of Jesus.

  147. Because John had been faithfully following Jesus,

  148. bearing witness to God's word,

  149. bearing witness to all that was true about Jesus,

  150. the testimony about Jesus,

  151. he was exiled and in prison

  152. on the island called Patmos.

  153. Now, Patmos is a tiny little island

  154. off the western coast of modern-day Turkey.

  155. And at the time, in John's day,

  156. it was used as a Roman penal settlement.

  157. It was a place where they put people

  158. who were dangerous to the good order of the empire.

  159. They shipped them off

  160. to spend the rest of their days in exile on Patmos.

  161. It was a prison colony.

  162. Now, we today may not experience exactly the same thing,

  163. but notice that John says,

  164. I'm your brother and partner in this tribulation in Jesus.

  165. He writes to these churches saying,

  166. this trial, this hardship,

  167. it's expected,

  168. and we share in it together.

  169. After all, do you remember what Jesus himself said

  170. in the Gospel of John?

  171. He says, in this world,

  172. you will have tribulation.

  173. It's the same word that John uses again here in Revelation.

  174. But John doesn't summarize the Christian life

  175. as only suffering, right?

  176. As only tribulation.

  177. He says in Jesus,

  178. we also share in the kingdom

  179. that is the reign of God,

  180. the in-breaking, liberating rule

  181. of the triune creator and redeemer.

  182. The tribulation and the kingdom in Jesus.

  183. Now, there's a balance here, isn't there?

  184. Christianity isn't just tribulation.

  185. You know, if that was the only thing we thought

  186. about following Christ,

  187. that would be pretty defeatist

  188. or pessimistic or despairing.

  189. But it isn't just the kingdom, right?

  190. That would be pretty triumphalistic.

  191. No, it's both.

  192. It's about God's kingdom

  193. that progresses even through tribulation.

  194. And it's about tribulation

  195. that will one day be swallowed up

  196. and healed by God's kingdom.

  197. It's both.

  198. So what we see in this first paragraph of our text

  199. is that all Christians will experience

  200. both the kingdom and trial.

  201. At some point in our walk with Jesus,

  202. we will face trial and suffering and hardship.

  203. That doesn't overthrow all the joys and blessings

  204. of knowing God in Christ, the kingdom,

  205. but we can expect it.

  206. Now, some of us don't need to be reminded of this fact.

  207. Maybe you've experienced all sorts of hardships

  208. in this life, physical, emotional, relational, spiritual.

  209. Maybe you've been ridiculed for your faith in Christ.

  210. Some Christians in the world today

  211. are being physically harmed and put to death

  212. for their testimony to Christ,

  213. as John puts it here.

  214. But even so, I do think many of us are surprised

  215. when hardships come.

  216. We may think for one reason or another

  217. that we're entitled to a pain-free life

  218. or that being a follower of Jesus

  219. should somehow get us out of it.

  220. Now, don't get me wrong.

  221. Following Jesus will save you

  222. a whole lot of heartache.

  223. To listen to Him, to know Him, to follow Him,

  224. that sort of life is full of joy.

  225. It is full of what John calls the kingdom.

  226. But it also means suffering at times,

  227. and we must not be surprised.

  228. Peter wrote in his first letter,

  229. the Apostle Peter in the book of 1 Peter says,

  230. Beloved, don't be surprised at the fiery trial

  231. when it comes upon you to test you,

  232. as though something strange were happening to you.

  233. So friend, I wonder,

  234. are you experiencing a fiery trial today?

  235. And are you uncertain how you will stand

  236. in the face of it?

  237. Jesus told John to send this book off

  238. to seven churches in Asia Minor.

  239. That's Western Turkey,

  240. and they're listed there in verse 11.

  241. In fact, they're listed in the order

  242. that the kind of main road would take you

  243. if you were delivering a letter like that.

  244. First, you would land at Ephesus on the coast,

  245. and then you would go up to Smyrna,

  246. and then you would start to kind of circle around

  247. to the rest of those cities.

  248. And those churches, as we know,

  249. and as you'll find out

  250. when you read chapters 2 and 3,

  251. were about to undergo persecution and suffering.

  252. Some of them had already started to experience it.

  253. Rome was about to become more aggressive

  254. in the years to come.

  255. The emperor was beginning to demand

  256. not just respect, but worship.

  257. And following Jesus was about to be

  258. more costly than ever.

  259. And as you read through the seven letters

  260. in chapters 2 and 3,

  261. you see what they're up against.

  262. Not just physical harm from unjust rulers,

  263. but in the midst of that pressure,

  264. internal theological confusion,

  265. moral breakdown,

  266. even spiritual complacency.

  267. All things that threaten us

  268. as the church today.

  269. And John wants to call them and us

  270. here to this third thing he lists.

  271. He wants to call us to patient endurance.

  272. That's what he lists and mentions in verse 9.

  273. And notice how all three of these words

  274. are strung together.

  275. We participate in the kingdom

  276. by virtue of our union with Christ, right?

  277. We participate and we undergo tribulation

  278. by virtue of our union with Christ.

  279. These things are in Christ.

  280. But then we also have patient endurance.

  281. Endurance.

  282. The patient endurance to remain faithful

  283. comes also by virtue of our union with Christ.

  284. Again, he says the tribulation and the kingdom

  285. and the patient endurance

  286. that are in Jesus.

  287. And the rest of the chapter

  288. starts to give that to us.

  289. Where do we go to get this endurance

  290. in the midst of trial?

  291. Well, we see in the rest of the chapter

  292. we get it from a vision

  293. of the glory of Christ.

  294. In verses 12 through 16

  295. we see the glory of the person of Christ.

  296. And then in verses 17 through 20

  297. we see the glory of the work of Christ.

  298. Now, if the word glory is a confusing one

  299. or not very clear in your mind,

  300. look at the description of Jesus

  301. in verses 12 through 16.

  302. I admit it's a little strange at first,

  303. isn't it?

  304. You know?

  305. White hair,

  306. swords coming out of your mouth,

  307. all that sort of stuff.

  308. But John's trying to use finite human language

  309. to capture something that exceeds our language.

  310. As you look over this,

  311. what are some of the themes

  312. that you might catch?

  313. First, Jesus is radiant, right?

  314. His face is shining like the sun.

  315. His feet are like burnished bronze,

  316. refined in a furnace.

  317. His hair is gleaming white.

  318. His eyes are on fire.

  319. Even his clothes are resplendent.

  320. He's got a golden sash around his chest.

  321. From head to toe,

  322. Jesus is blazing and bright.

  323. This is the one who said,

  324. I am the light of the world.

  325. So first, the glory of Jesus here is his brilliance.

  326. It's his beauty.

  327. It's his radiance.

  328. But second, it's his power.

  329. His voice is like the roar of many waters.

  330. His right hand is holding seven stars,

  331. and we'll get to what that means in a minute.

  332. Out of his mouth comes a sharp two-edged sword.

  333. That's a striking image, isn't it?

  334. It's as if to say,

  335. here is one so powerful

  336. that his mere word is penetrating and effectual.

  337. What he says happens.

  338. What he says goes.

  339. The judgment that he renders is always true.

  340. He doesn't just declare verdicts,

  341. but his voice creates and recreates.

  342. It's roaring like waters

  343. and cutting the air like a trumpet,

  344. as John said in verse 10.

  345. So the vision of Jesus here,

  346. his glory,

  347. is one of intense beauty

  348. and one of perfect power.

  349. When do we ever catch a glimpse

  350. of beauty and power combined?

  351. You know, in this life,

  352. we often only behold one or the other.

  353. In this life,

  354. beautiful things are often fragile, aren't they?

  355. You know, flowers wither,

  356. sunsets quickly disappear,

  357. and powerful things are often,

  358. well, not very beautiful, right?

  359. I remember years ago watching

  360. the world's strongest man contest.

  361. Do you remember those?

  362. You know,

  363. they were pretty awesome.

  364. You know,

  365. these dudes with names like Lars and Dietrich

  366. would like pull cars and throw logs

  367. and do all sorts of crazy feats of brute strength.

  368. But you know,

  369. I wouldn't necessarily say

  370. that those guys were the picture of beauty,

  371. you know, right?

  372. But here in Jesus Christ,

  373. we see both.

  374. Ravishing beauty

  375. and unparalleled strength.

  376. As John reaches for metaphors

  377. to capture what the risen,

  378. ascended Jesus is like,

  379. he often turns to nature,

  380. its hair like wool,

  381. like snow,

  382. like a snowstorm covering the earth

  383. in layers of white.

  384. There's power and beauty.

  385. His voice like the roar of many waters.

  386. The ocean is vast and limitless.

  387. As the waves pound the shore,

  388. there's power and beauty.

  389. His face like the sun shining in full strength.

  390. The sun,

  391. the stars,

  392. again,

  393. beauty and power.

  394. But in describing the risen and ascended Jesus,

  395. John isn't just finding pictures from nature.

  396. You know,

  397. he's also,

  398. and more importantly,

  399. pulling images from the Old Testament.

  400. You know,

  401. these various images describing

  402. the glorious Christ

  403. come from places like Daniel 7

  404. and Daniel 10

  405. and Isaiah 60

  406. and Ezekiel 1.

  407. In fact,

  408. Jesus appearing like a son of man

  409. is a direct allusion

  410. to Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  411. And listen to that passage.

  412. Daniel 7,

  413. 13 and 14.

  414. Prophet Daniel says,

  415. That's Daniel 7.

  416. And what John is saying here

  417. in Revelation,

  418. what Jesus is revealing himself,

  419. as Jesus is revealing himself to John,

  420. is to say,

  421. I am that son of man.

  422. Jesus ascended to the Father,

  423. the Ancient of Days,

  424. and the Father has given him

  425. an everlasting kingdom

  426. that will never pass away.

  427. And it will be a kingdom

  428. for all peoples,

  429. nations,

  430. and languages,

  431. and it will never be destroyed.

  432. Now,

  433. how,

  434. how then,

  435. does this vision

  436. of the glory

  437. of Christ's person

  438. help us endure in trials?

  439. Well,

  440. it's because this Jesus,

  441. this one who is the sum

  442. and source

  443. of beauty and strength,

  444. this one who fulfills

  445. the Old Testament longing

  446. for God himself

  447. to come as king,

  448. this one,

  449. friend,

  450. his kingdom will never end,

  451. and it will never be destroyed.

  452. No matter what is shaking you

  453. right now,

  454. it will not,

  455. and it cannot,

  456. take the best away from you.

  457. If you belong to Christ,

  458. then you belong to the one

  459. whose beauty and power

  460. cannot fade.

  461. What you have in him,

  462. no amount of suffering

  463. can steal.

  464. What you have in him,

  465. no hardship can diminish.

  466. The vision of Jesus here,

  467. this is Jesus right now,

  468. at the Father's right hand,

  469. living,

  470. ruling,

  471. reigning,

  472. coming again,

  473. this is the one through faith

  474. that you are united to,

  475. Christian.

  476. So even if your health fails,

  477. even if your earthly dreams

  478. are shattered,

  479. you have him.

  480. Imagine a house

  481. full of artwork,

  482. but every single piece

  483. of artwork in that house

  484. is just a print.

  485. It's a reproduction.

  486. It's a poster,

  487. except for one.

  488. Upstairs in the spare bedroom,

  489. there hangs a genuine Monet

  490. worth millions,

  491. beautiful to behold.

  492. Now imagine that same house

  493. one night is robbed.

  494. Every single piece

  495. ripped from the walls

  496. while the owner is away.

  497. You know,

  498. you can imagine the owner

  499. coming home,

  500. seeing the front door

  501. sort of swinging open,

  502. and in he goes,

  503. seeing all of his pictures gone,

  504. and his heart starts to beat,

  505. and he hurries through the rooms,

  506. and where is he going, right?

  507. He's going to the stairs.

  508. He's going up to the bedroom,

  509. and there he sees it

  510. on the wall,

  511. in its place.

  512. The Monet,

  513. it's still there.

  514. They'd taken everything else,

  515. but not the one of real worth,

  516. not the one that had

  517. real lasting value.

  518. That one,

  519. he still had.

  520. Friends,

  521. it's the same with Christ.

  522. It's the same with you

  523. and Christ.

  524. Every pleasure,

  525. every good,

  526. every joy we experience

  527. in this life,

  528. the real,

  529. earthly created goods,

  530. at the same time,

  531. they're just prints

  532. and reproductions

  533. pointing us to him,

  534. the source of all good,

  535. whose face shines like the sun.

  536. And if we have him,

  537. then we can lose nothing.

  538. You know,

  539. some of those prints

  540. in the house

  541. might have had some good

  542. associations for the owner,

  543. but he had the thing

  544. that was of real worth.

  545. Now,

  546. John doesn't just show us

  547. the glory of Christ's person here.

  548. He also shows us

  549. the glory of Christ's work.

  550. In verse 17,

  551. John falls to the ground

  552. as though dead,

  553. but Jesus reaches out

  554. his right hand

  555. puts it on John

  556. and says,

  557. fear not.

  558. I am the first

  559. and the last

  560. and the living one.

  561. I died

  562. and behold,

  563. I am alive

  564. forevermore

  565. and I have the keys

  566. of death

  567. and Hades.

  568. When Jesus,

  569. the ever living one,

  570. died

  571. and rose again,

  572. he conquered

  573. sin and death

  574. for all who believe.

  575. And now

  576. he holds the keys

  577. of death and hell.

  578. You see,

  579. friends,

  580. because Jesus died

  581. and rose again,

  582. there's no suffering,

  583. no death

  584. that a Christian

  585. will undergo in this life

  586. that will not be overcome

  587. and turned for their good,

  588. either in this age

  589. or in the age to come.

  590. Jesus died on the cross

  591. taking our worst,

  592. taking our sin,

  593. taking the punishment

  594. our sins deserve,

  595. taking the hell

  596. and wrath

  597. that was ours.

  598. but in his resurrection,

  599. what were we given

  600. in exchange?

  601. His righteousness,

  602. his life,

  603. his reward.

  604. Jesus takes our worst

  605. down into death.

  606. He is the one

  607. who died

  608. but he is the one

  609. who lives again.

  610. So whatever trial

  611. we face here,

  612. we know that with a Lord

  613. like this,

  614. whatever trial we face,

  615. it's not some mistake

  616. in the plan.

  617. No,

  618. God will ultimately

  619. use all of our trials

  620. for our good

  621. and he will make us

  622. more like Jesus

  623. through them.

  624. Fear not,

  625. Jesus says,

  626. I hold the keys

  627. of death and Hades.

  628. I died

  629. and behold,

  630. I am alive forevermore.

  631. And notice that Jesus

  632. is here standing

  633. among the lampstands

  634. and holding the stars

  635. in his hands.

  636. Now the lampstands,

  637. John tells us,

  638. Jesus tells John

  639. in verse 20,

  640. are what?

  641. They're the churches.

  642. Jesus is in the midst

  643. of the church

  644. and it says that the stars

  645. are the angels

  646. of the churches.

  647. Now perhaps angels

  648. there are just that,

  649. angelic beings,

  650. a representative part

  651. of the heavenly host

  652. with a special ministry

  653. to the churches.

  654. Or perhaps angels there

  655. could mean

  656. just messengers.

  657. Angel literally

  658. means a messenger.

  659. Maybe it's the human messengers

  660. of the churches themselves

  661. but either way,

  662. isn't the picture the same?

  663. That Jesus is dwelling

  664. in the midst of his church.

  665. He's present among them.

  666. He's active among them.

  667. He's here right now

  668. even if we don't see him.

  669. The living one

  670. dwells among his people.

  671. He dwells amidst his people,

  672. the ones he purchased

  673. with his own death

  674. and he's ever present

  675. to lead,

  676. to guide,

  677. to teach,

  678. to warn,

  679. to protect.

  680. So this is what we need

  681. in times of trial.

  682. A fresh vision

  683. of the glory of Christ.

  684. When we see his person,

  685. when we see his beauty

  686. and his strength,

  687. we realize that he

  688. is our greatest good

  689. and nothing can take him

  690. or his kingdom away from us.

  691. And when we see his work,

  692. his death,

  693. his resurrection,

  694. his reign for us,

  695. we realize that every bad

  696. will be turned for our good

  697. and we need not fear.

  698. Now let me conclude then

  699. with two applications.

  700. One for those

  701. who are not Christians

  702. and one for those who are.

  703. First,

  704. we've been saying this morning

  705. that those who believe in Jesus

  706. can face trial and suffering

  707. with the utmost endurance

  708. because of who Jesus is

  709. and because of what he's done.

  710. But friend,

  711. don't you see,

  712. if you're here today

  713. and you've not placed

  714. your trust in Jesus,

  715. then these things

  716. are not true of you.

  717. Without a saving relationship

  718. with Christ,

  719. the one who died

  720. and rose again,

  721. suffering actually

  722. will steal

  723. your best in this life.

  724. Your friends,

  725. your possession,

  726. your worldly status,

  727. your health,

  728. none of these things

  729. are immune from death

  730. and decay.

  731. And the bad things

  732. that happen to you,

  733. they will never ultimately

  734. turn for your good.

  735. apart from Christ,

  736. your best days

  737. will be forever behind you,

  738. slipping further

  739. and further away.

  740. And as you head forward,

  741. you are destined

  742. for more loss

  743. and more fear.

  744. But the risen Lord Jesus

  745. says to you right now,

  746. fear not and come to me.

  747. He's standing at the door

  748. and he's knocking.

  749. open to him

  750. and put your heart's trust

  751. in him

  752. and the one who holds

  753. the keys of death

  754. and Hades

  755. will be your Lord

  756. and your protector

  757. from this point forward

  758. forevermore.

  759. And he will come

  760. into your life

  761. and a little later

  762. in Revelation,

  763. he'll say,

  764. I'll sit down with you

  765. and I'll dine with you

  766. and I'll make you my own.

  767. And then you can live

  768. without fear.

  769. And if you have done that,

  770. if you are a Christian,

  771. then I want to encourage you

  772. by way of application

  773. to seek the means

  774. of renewing this vision

  775. of Jesus in glory.

  776. Seek the means of renewing

  777. the sense of the glorious Christ

  778. in your own mind and heart.

  779. You know,

  780. you probably won't have

  781. an actual vision

  782. like John had here, right?

  783. That's okay.

  784. But what are the means

  785. that God has given us

  786. to make the truth about Jesus

  787. more real to our hearts?

  788. Well, first,

  789. notice that John,

  790. even in exile,

  791. is worshiping

  792. on the Lord's Day.

  793. Now, when John says

  794. the Lord's Day,

  795. he's referring to Sunday.

  796. This is one of the earliest

  797. references to Sunday

  798. as a special day

  799. for Christians,

  800. as a day for worship.

  801. This is the day,

  802. the Lord's Day,

  803. Sunday,

  804. when Jesus rose from the dead.

  805. This is the new day

  806. of Christian worship,

  807. no longer the seventh day

  808. under the Old Covenant,

  809. but now the first day

  810. under the New Covenant,

  811. the day when the God of Israel

  812. inaugurated his worldwide reign

  813. in the resurrection of Jesus,

  814. the Messiah, the Christ.

  815. And here is John

  816. worshiping in the Spirit

  817. on the Lord's Day.

  818. Friends, by way of simple application,

  819. that is an example for us.

  820. What we do on Sundays

  821. isn't some rote ritual.

  822. It's not checking off

  823. a list of spiritual to-dos.

  824. It's gathering

  825. in the Spirit of God

  826. to set our minds and hearts

  827. upon the One who died

  828. and rose again for us

  829. to bring us to God.

  830. Regular rhythms

  831. of gathered worship

  832. are essential

  833. to keeping and renewing

  834. our vision of Jesus' glory.

  835. You know, it's easy

  836. to drop off

  837. coming to church on Sunday

  838. when things get hard,

  839. but that's precisely the time

  840. when we need it

  841. more than ever.

  842. Because in gathered worship,

  843. Jesus is present

  844. in a special way,

  845. helping us to recapture

  846. a vision of His glory.

  847. But also consider

  848. your times of private prayer.

  849. And in your times

  850. of private prayer,

  851. brother, sister,

  852. do you take time

  853. not just to pray

  854. all of your needs to God,

  855. though that is important

  856. and good,

  857. but you also take time

  858. to actually set your heart

  859. on God

  860. and enjoy Him.

  861. You know,

  862. this practice

  863. in our own private times

  864. of prayer

  865. is another means

  866. of keeping our vision

  867. of Jesus' glory

  868. fresh and real

  869. to our hearts.

  870. Find a truth about God

  871. or Christ

  872. in your regular Scripture reading

  873. and pause over it

  874. and think over it

  875. and slow down

  876. and worship God for it

  877. and enjoy God

  878. for who He is.

  879. By way of example,

  880. think about Psalm 21.

  881. Verse 1 of Psalm 21 reads,

  882. O Lord,

  883. in Your strength

  884. the King rejoices.

  885. Maybe you read

  886. a passage like that

  887. in your morning reading

  888. or your evening reading.

  889. And if you encounter

  890. a line like that,

  891. pause

  892. to rejoice

  893. in God's strength.

  894. Think about the way

  895. He parted the Red Sea,

  896. the way He stilled

  897. the storm of Galilee,

  898. the way He rose

  899. and power from the dead,

  900. and the way that He's worked

  901. mightily in your own life.

  902. That's what it means

  903. to meditate

  904. on God's Word.

  905. And the Holy Spirit

  906. will use that

  907. to refresh

  908. and to renew

  909. your vision

  910. of Jesus' glory

  911. and to give you

  912. more of that endurance

  913. that we have in Him.

  914. Let me mention

  915. just one more way

  916. that we can do this.

  917. What are the means

  918. that God has given us

  919. to renew our sense

  920. of Jesus' glory?

  921. Well, one other mean

  922. I'll mention,

  923. but there are more.

  924. One other mean

  925. is through the ordinances

  926. or through the sacraments.

  927. In the New Testament,

  928. we see that Jesus gave us

  929. two symbolic actions

  930. to fuel our faith in Him,

  931. baptism and the Lord's Supper.

  932. And Jesus gave us

  933. these practices

  934. in order to keep

  935. our minds and hearts

  936. renewed

  937. in the glory

  938. of what He's done for us.

  939. Now, we know

  940. that the Lord's Supper

  941. is this ongoing act

  942. for Christians, right?

  943. Jesus told us

  944. to take two simple things,

  945. bread and a cup,

  946. and through those

  947. simple elements

  948. we're taken into

  949. the infinite depths

  950. of what He's done

  951. for us on the cross.

  952. We eat the bread

  953. to remember His body

  954. broken for us.

  955. We drink the cup

  956. to remember His blood

  957. poured out for us.

  958. And Jesus offers us

  959. those things saying,

  960. remember me,

  961. eat with me,

  962. take what I've done

  963. down into the depths of you

  964. and let me comfort you

  965. and strengthen you

  966. and change you.

  967. The Lord's Supper

  968. is that ongoing act

  969. for those who place

  970. their faith in Christ.

  971. baptism, on the other hand,

  972. is a one-time act

  973. for those who have

  974. placed their faith

  975. in Christ.

  976. We see in the New Testament

  977. that after someone

  978. hears the gospel,

  979. places their faith

  980. in Christ,

  981. they're then baptized,

  982. they're immersed in water,

  983. they go down

  984. and back up again.

  985. And this going down

  986. and coming back up again

  987. symbolizes our union

  988. with Christ by faith.

  989. After all,

  990. it was Christ

  991. on the cross

  992. who went down

  993. into the waters

  994. of judgment,

  995. down into the grave

  996. for us,

  997. and on the third day

  998. He rose again.

  999. And when we are baptized

  1000. in Jesus' name,

1001. it's as if we are saying,

  1002. what Jesus did

1003. is now the most true

  1004. and important thing

  1005. about me

  1006. and who I am.

1007. As Paul says in Galatians,

  1008. I've been crucified

  1009. with Christ.

  1010. It's no longer I who live,

1011. but Christ who lives in me.

1012. And the life I now live

  1013. in the flesh,

  1014. I live by faith

1015. in the Son of God

  1016. who loved me

1017. and gave Himself for me.

  1018. Baptism is that act

  1019. of publicly proclaiming

  1020. this great truth

1021. of our union with Christ

  1022. by faith.

  1023. So Christian,

1024. today as you face trials,

  1025. as you face hardship,

  1026. what this chapter

  1027. of Revelation

  1028. is telling us

1029. is to look to the glory

  1030. of Christ,

1031. take hold of the means

  1032. to see Christ

  1033. in all His glory.

  1034. glory.

  1035. There's an old hymn

  1036. that goes like this.

  1037. It says,

  1038. O soul,

  1039. are you weary

  1040. and troubled?

  1041. No light

  1042. in the darkness

  1043. you see?

  1044. There's a light

  1045. for a look

  1046. at the Savior

  1047. and life

  1048. more abundant

  1049. and free.

  1050. Turn your eyes

  1051. upon Jesus.

  1052. Look full

  1053. in His wonderful face

  1054. and the things

  1055. of earth

  1056. will grow strangely dim

  1057. in the light

  1058. of His glory

  1059. and grace.

  1060. Let's pray.

  1061. Lord Jesus,

  1062. we confess

  1063. that oftentimes

  1064. our thoughts of You

  1065. are so small

  1066. and so diminished.

  1067. Jesus,

1068. give us a fresh sense

  1069. of who You've revealed

  1070. Yourself to be

  1071. in this passage,

  1072. the One Mighty,

  1073. the One Beautiful.

  1074. All Your judgments

  1075. are just.

  1076. All Your ways

  1077. are good.

  1078. You are the prize

  1079. above any.

  1080. Oh, Lord,

  1081. pull our hearts

  1082. out from earthly things

  1083. and the small

  1084. little cares

  1085. and concerns

  1086. that we become

  1087. so occupied with

  1088. and lift our gaze

  1089. to You again

  1090. so that we might

  1091. worship You

  1092. and so that we

  1093. might be strengthened

  1094. to run this race

  1095. with endurance.

  1096. We pray this

  1097. in Your name.

  1098. Amen.
