  1. Good morning, church.

  2. Friends, one thing we do here at Trinity

  3. is that we do our very best to humbly preach God's Word.

  4. We try hard to take our key and our tune from Scripture.

  5. And so what that means is that whenever we come to a passage

  6. which talks about difficult things, we do not shy away.

  7. This morning, the two subjects that Scripture presents for us

  8. are difficult for many.

  9. These two things are the subjects of suffering and death.

  10. These are the two things in this world

  11. that most people would do anything to avoid.

  12. Most people, in fact, don't even like to talk about these things.

  13. But today, our passage in Scripture has much to say

  14. about suffering and death,

  15. and so we're going to take these subjects head-on.

  16. This is important to do because if you haven't noticed,

  17. suffering and death are two things that hard as we try,

  18. we cannot avoid.

  19. They are inescapable,

  20. and because of this, people fear them above all else.

  21. But Christian, I wonder,

  22. what about you?

  23. Are you afraid of suffering?

  24. Are you afraid of death?

  25. What do you do, or what should you do when faced with these things?

  26. Perhaps you are suffering now.

  27. How are you enduring?

  28. Perhaps you know that your end is coming.

  29. How are you responding?

  30. Well, if you find yourself afraid,

  31. and we all do at times,

  32. if you find yourself afraid of these things,

  33. then take heart,

  34. because the letter we are about to read

  35. has good counsel for you.

  36. In this letter, in the book of Revelation,

  37. Jesus tells the ancient church of Smyrna

  38. that they are going to suffer,

  39. and that some of them may even die.

  40. But Jesus says to them

  41. to not be afraid.

  42. And He promises

  43. that He will defeat suffering and death.

  44. And what He promises to them,

  45. He promises to you, O Christian.

  46. So let us walk through these things this morning.

  47. The passage we have before us

  48. can be found in the book of Revelation,

    Revelation 2:8–11

  49. chapter 2, verses 8 through 11.

  50. This corresponds with page 965

  51. in your pew Bible.

  52. And just by way of reminder,

  53. the author of the book of Revelation

  54. is John the Apostle,

  55. a disciple of Jesus.

  56. And in this book of Revelation,

  57. Jesus has appeared to John

  58. in a heavenly vision,

  59. and He's currently dictating letters to John

  60. to send to local churches in Asia Minor.

  61. And this brief letter we have before us today

  62. was addressed to the church in ancient Smyrna.

  63. And this little letter reads like this.

  64. And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write,

  65. the words of the first and the last

  66. who died and came to life.

  67. I know your tribulation and your poverty,

  68. but you are rich,

  69. and the slander of those who say

  70. that they are Jews and are not,

  71. but are a synagogue of Satan.

  72. Do not fear what you are about to suffer.

  73. Behold, the devil is about to throw

  74. some of you into prison

  75. that you may be tested,

  76. and for ten days you will have tribulation.

  77. Be faithful unto death,

  78. and I will give you the crown of life.

  79. He who has an ear,

  80. let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  81. The one who conquers

  82. will not be hurt by the second death.

  83. Here Jesus counsels the church in Smyrna

  84. not to fear suffering

  85. and to be faithful even unto death.

  86. And these will be our two themes this morning.

  87. First, we will start with a little bit

  88. of background to this letter.

  89. We'll sketch out the historical context

  90. to help us understand the sufferings

  91. that the church in Smyrna was facing

  92. and what they were to face.

  93. And then we'll focus on two things.

  94. First, what Jesus says about suffering.

  95. And second, what Jesus says about death.

  96. And we will see what counsel

  97. he gives to those who face such things.

  98. And we'll see what counsel he gives to you.

  99. Let's pray together.

  100. Oh, Father in heaven,

  101. we thank you for your word.

  102. We thank you for its timeliness.

  103. And Lord, for how you cut to our hearts with it.

  104. Father, we pray

  105. that through your word this morning

  106. you would give consolation

  107. and comfort and encouragement

  108. to those who are suffering

  109. and to those who face death.

  110. Lord, we pray that we would treasure

  111. your word in our hearts.

  112. Lord, that if now we do not face these things,

  113. that in the future when we do,

  114. we will remember your counsel

  115. and we would cast ourselves upon you,

  116. the one who has conquered suffering and death.

  117. Father, we pray all this in the name of Jesus.

  118. Amen.

  119. Let us begin with a little bit

  120. of historical background to this letter.

  121. Remember, this letter was written

  122. to the ancient church in Smyrna.

  123. And Smyrna was a very wealthy city

  124. in the ancient world.

  125. It was known for its spices,

  126. for trade,

  127. and its beautiful buildings.

  128. And it was also one of the chief centers

  129. of imperial worship of the Roman emperor.

  130. It was, in fact, specially selected for this purpose.

  131. What this means is that the people of Smyrna

  132. would have been making sacrifices

  133. to the Roman emperor pretty much every day.

  134. And along with this,

  135. Smyrna also had a vibrant Jewish community.

  136. But it must be noted that

  137. of all the different ethnic groups

  138. in the Roman Empire,

  139. Jews at this time were exempted

  140. from the requirements of emperor worship

  141. by special agreement with the government.

  142. This means that while probably everyone in Smyrna

  143. was required to worship the Roman emperor,

  144. the Jewish inhabitants likely were not.

  145. And all these things help us to understand

  146. Jesus' words to the church in Smyrna,

  147. because when we take this letter

  148. and we place it in the light

  149. of these historical facts,

  150. we can draw some reasonable conclusions.

  151. First, it seems, for example,

  152. that the Christians of Smyrna

  153. must have felt pressure

  154. to worship the Roman emperor

  155. due to the imperially backed Roman cult

  156. that was present in the city.

  157. And in fact, this pressure may have been immense.

  158. Along with this,

  159. Christians also would have been living

  160. amongst very wealthy people.

  161. They would have lived among people

  162. who flaunted their riches,

  163. who had opulent homes,

  164. who possessed many servants and slaves.

  165. Yet, as Jesus tells us in his letter to the church,

  166. the Christians in Smyrna were poor.

  167. Furthermore, as I said,

  168. we know from the historical record

  169. that there was a vigorous and thriving Jewish population.

  170. We gleaned from the letter

  171. that the Jewish community of Smyrna

  172. seems to have been slandering the Christians of Smyrna.

  173. They seem to have been saying

  174. that the Christians were not actually Jews.

  175. That is, that they were not actually worshiping

  176. the God of Israel.

  177. This is relevant because,

  178. as I mentioned before,

  179. the Jews of Smyrna,

  180. like all Jews in the Roman Empire,

  181. they were exempted

  182. from worshiping the Roman emperor.

  183. We know also,

  184. from reading the book of Acts,

  185. that in the early days of the church,

  186. Christians would often worship in synagogues,

  187. since in the early church,

  188. most Christians were Jews to begin with.

  189. So the reasonable inference here

  190. is that in a place like Smyrna,

  191. there was immense pressure to worship the emperor.

  192. But despite this,

  193. Christians could likely have found a safe haven,

  194. a shelter from persecution,

  195. but only if they worshipped in the local synagogue.

  196. This, for example,

  197. is something that even the apostles did for a time

  198. in the early church,

  199. where the apostles continued to identify as Jews

  200. and worship in the synagogues.

  201. We see this throughout the book of Acts.

  202. But there was a problem in Smyrna,

  203. because the letter in Revelation says

  204. that the Jews in Smyrna

  205. were slandering the Christians

  206. and saying that they were not Jews.

  207. A reasonable conclusion

  208. that scholars have made from these things

  209. is that the Christians of Smyrna,

  210. who had sought refuge in the synagogues,

  211. had been kicked out of the synagogues,

  212. and therefore they were exposed

  213. to persecution

  214. and the forced worship of the Roman emperor.

  215. They seemed to have been accused

  216. by ethnic Jews

  217. of not being faithful to the God of Israel,

  218. because they followed the Messiah Jesus.

  219. And hence these Christians

  220. were excommunicated from the synagogue,

  221. and the result is that

  222. they were no longer exempted

  223. from worshiping the emperor,

  224. and they were exposed to persecution

  225. if they remained faithful to Christ.

  226. Taken altogether,

  227. we can conclude

  228. that the church in Smyrna was suffering.

  229. They were poor.

  230. They were slandered.

  231. And as the passage explains,

  232. they soon would suffer imprisonment.

  233. But what does Jesus say

  234. to the church in Smyrna

  235. in view of these things?

  236. What word does Jesus have

  237. for those in Smyrna

  238. who are suffering?

  239. Remember, Christian,

  240. what Jesus says to the church in Smyrna,

  241. he in many ways says to you.

  242. So let me rephrase that question.

  243. Instead of,

  244. what word does Jesus have

  245. for those in Smyrna

  246. who are suffering?

  247. Let us ask this morning,

  248. what word does Jesus have for you

  249. who are suffering

  250. or who are facing death?

  251. Let us start first

  252. with what Jesus says about suffering,

  253. and then secondly,

  254. we'll discuss what Jesus says about death.

  255. So let's begin.

  256. In Revelation 2-9,

  257. the first thing Jesus says

  258. to those who are suffering is this,

  259. I know your tribulation.

  260. Friends, are you suffering today?

  261. Jesus says to you,

  262. I know your tribulation.

  263. You are not forgotten by God.

  264. He knows your tears.

  265. He knows your doubt.

  266. He knows your pain.

  267. If you are jobless,

  268. homeless,

  269. anxious,

  270. hopeless,

  271. He knows these things.

  272. If you are called at work

  273. to stand firm in the gospel

  274. and so to risk your career

  275. or your income,

  276. if you're called to cease from sin

  277. and jeopardize your relationships

  278. with your family or your friends,

  279. all for the sake of Jesus,

  280. whatever it is you are suffering,

  281. whether it is bodily illness

  282. or external oppression

  283. or mental anguish,

  284. whatever it may be,

  285. Jesus says to you,

  286. I know your tribulation.

  287. Jesus is not blind to these things.

  288. He knows.

  289. He sees.

  290. He understands.

  291. Scripture declares

  292. in Hebrews chapter 218,

  293. because Jesus himself

  294. has suffered when tested,

  295. he is able to help those

  296. who are being tested.

  297. Friends, this is the first thing

  298. Scripture says to you

  299. who are suffering.

  300. Jesus knows.

  301. Jesus is aware.

  302. Jesus is intimately familiar

  303. with suffering.

  304. He is not unacquainted

  305. with these things.

  306. He himself suffered,

  307. and so he's able to help you

  308. who are being tested by suffering.

  309. You are not alone.

  310. You are not forgotten by God.

  311. Jesus knows.

  312. Every tear you have shed

  313. and every drop you have bled.

  314. Be comforted in this,

  315. my brothers and sisters.

  316. But there's a second word

  317. that Jesus has for you

  318. who are suffering.

  319. He goes on to say

  320. to the church of Smyrna

  321. in Revelation 2.9,

  322. He says,

  323. I know your poverty,

  324. but you are rich.

  325. To put this another way,

  326. though it appears,

  327. Jesus says,

  328. that you are poor now,

  329. you in actuality are rich.

  330. Though it appears

  331. that you are suffering now

  332. in the heavenly

  333. and spiritual reality

  334. that Jesus has ushered in,

  335. all these hardships,

  336. are working together

  337. for your good,

  338. both now and in the future.

  339. And this is not some

  340. far-off promise

  341. of spiritual riches.

  342. It is a promise

  343. of spiritual riches

  344. that can be redeemed

  345. here and now

  346. in the present moment,

  347. in this very instant.

  348. This is why Jesus says

  349. to the church,

  350. I know your poverty,

  351. but you are rich.

  352. Jesus does not say,

  353. I know your poverty,

  354. take heart,

  355. you will be spiritually rich

  356. in the future

  357. when I return.

  358. Instead, He says,

  359. I know your poverty,

  360. but you are rich

  361. here and now.

  362. This idea

  363. that the heavenly blessings

  364. in Christ

  365. are present now

  366. is illustrated

  367. by Jesus' promise

  368. in the Gospel of Mark

  369. in chapter 10.

  370. Jesus says,

  371. Truly I say to you,

  372. there is no one

  373. who has left house

  374. or brothers

  375. or sisters

  376. or mother

  377. or father

  378. or children

  379. or lands

  380. for my sake

  381. or for the sake

  382. of the Gospel

  383. who will not receive

  384. a hundredfold now

  385. in this time

  386. houses

  387. and brothers

  388. and sisters

  389. and mothers

  390. and children

  391. and lands

  392. with persecutions

  393. and in the age to come

  394. eternal life.

  395. but many who are first

  396. will be last

  397. and the last first.

  398. Notice here

  399. the promises of Jesus

  400. for you, Christian.

  401. He says that

  402. if you follow Me,

  403. you will suffer

  404. in this life,

  405. but in the life,

  406. this life,

  407. you also will receive

  408. a hundredfold

  409. in return.

  410. You'll receive

  411. spiritual friends

  412. and spiritual brothers

  413. and sisters

  414. and spiritual children

  415. and houses

  416. and countries.

  417. And Jesus says,

  418. in the future,

  419. though you are last now,

  420. you will be first then.

  421. Hence,

  422. if we return

  423. to the church

  424. in Smyrna,

  425. Jesus says that

  426. though Smyrna

  427. was at that time

  428. poor

  429. in an earthly sense,

  430. in actuality,

  431. they were rich

  432. towards God

  433. in that very moment.

  434. And Jesus

  435. says the same

  436. to you, Christian.

  437. Though you may be

  438. poor now,

  439. you are rich

  440. in God.

  441. And this goes

  442. for all kinds

  443. of suffering,

  444. whatever form

  445. it may take,

  446. be it poverty,

  447. physical pain,

  448. despair,

  449. slander,

  450. betrayal,

  451. persecution,

  452. or anything else.

  453. If you are a follower

  454. of Jesus Christ,

  455. there is not just

  456. a renewed body

  457. awaiting for you

  458. in heaven,

  459. but even now,

  460. you walk,

  461. you run

  462. in the spiritual gifts.

  463. You possess

  464. the unsurpassable gifts

  465. and abilities

  466. of the Holy Spirit.

  467. These are yours now.

  468. Joy,

  469. hope,

  470. love,

  471. fellowship with the saints

  472. and with God above.

  473. If you weep now,

  474. those tears are being

  475. and will be wiped away.

  476. If you suffer slander,

  477. take heart

  478. because in this moment,

  479. you're found innocent

  480. before God

  481. and you will also

  482. be found innocent

  483. in the day of judgment.

  484. If you suffer today

  485. with the shackles

  486. of addiction,

  487. you can be freed

  488. now

  489. and in the future,

  490. those temptations

  491. will pass away forever

  492. when Jesus comes.

  493. All this to say

  494. that if in this life,

  495. in this world,

  496. you are suffering,

  497. what Jesus promises

  498. and what he calls you

  499. to recognize

  500. is that an actual reality

  501. of the matter

  502. is that day by day

  503. there are blessings

  504. being poured out

  505. on you this very moment

  506. and there is spiritual treasure

  507. stored up for you

  508. in heaven

  509. in the world to come.

  510. Well, friends,

  511. from these,

  512. we can derive

  513. a third word

  514. that Jesus says

  515. to those who are suffering.

  516. The church in Smyrna

  517. was poor,

  518. but Jesus said

  519. they were rich.

  520. This is an example

  521. of a profound

  522. gospel truth.

  523. It turns out

  524. that when you are suffering

  525. in the path

  526. of obedience to Jesus,

  527. God has promised

  528. that he will take

  529. your sufferings

  530. and he does not simply

  531. bless you

  532. in a general spiritual way

  533. in the present moment

  534. in your suffering,

  535. but he takes your suffering

  536. and he works upon it

  537. with a kind

  538. of precise antidote,

  539. a counter agent

  540. that turns

  541. that specific suffering,

  542. that turns

  543. that specific evil

  544. into an exact

  545. corresponding

  546. and matching gift.

  547. So if you are poor

  548. in this world,

  549. then faithfully,

  550. humbly,

  551. enduring that poverty

  552. makes you rich in God.

  553. If you are slandered

  554. in this world,

  555. then patiently persevering

  556. in that slander

  557. by God's grace

  558. turns that slander

  559. into vindication.

  560. If you are abandoned

  561. by friends or family

  562. for following Christ,

  563. then you are called

  564. the friend of God.

  565. And you receive

  566. the fellowship

  567. of the Holy Spirit

  568. and the fellowship

  569. of spiritual brothers

  570. and sisters in Christ

  571. and this kind

  572. of spiritual inversion

  573. where God

  574. turns your suffering

  575. into blessing.

  576. This is the very thing

  577. that Jesus promises

  578. in his Sermon on the Mount.

  579. He says,

  580. blessed are the poor

  581. in spirit,

  582. for theirs is the kingdom

  583. of heaven.

  584. Blessed are those

  585. who mourn,

  586. for they shall be comforted.

  587. Blessed are the meek,

  588. for they shall inherit

  589. the earth.

  590. What we've covered

  591. so far is this.

  592. Remember,

  593. when you are suffering,

  594. remember first,

  595. God knows

  596. and understands,

  597. for he suffered also.

  598. He has not abandoned you.

  599. You are not alone.

  600. He is with you.

  601. Secondly,

  602. though you are suffering,

  603. you are blessed

  604. both in the world

  605. to come

  606. and in this present world.

  607. You are blessed

  608. in the here and now

  609. as well

  610. as in the hereafter.

  611. And thirdly,

  612. God takes that specific

  613. suffering you are enduring

  614. and he works

  615. a corresponding blessing

  616. through your patient

  617. and faithful endurance

  618. by his grace.

  619. Now I know

  620. and understand

  621. what toil

  622. and hardships

  623. suffering can be.

  624. I understand

  625. how such things

  626. can blind you

  627. from seeing

  628. these spiritual promises

  629. and spiritual realities.

  630. As many of you

  631. are aware,

  632. I was born

  633. with a severe heart defect.

  634. I've had two

  635. open heart surgeries.

  636. I have more surgeries

  637. to come.

  638. I know what it is like

  639. to be a boy

  640. in agony

  641. in a hospital bed

  642. crying,

  643. Lord,

  644. why is this happening

  645. to me?

  646. Why have you allowed

  647. me to suffer?

  648. I know what it is

  649. to see all the other

  650. children grow healthy

  651. and able to run

  652. and play in ways

  653. that I could not.

  654. For many years,

  655. friends,

  656. I grew bitter

  657. against God.

  658. I could not see

  659. his promises

  660. for me.

  661. But then,

  662. brothers and sisters,

  663. Jesus Christ

  664. stepped into my life

  665. and what I learned

  666. from him

  667. is that in Christ Jesus

  668. who suffered for us,

  669. in him

  670. our suffering works

  671. an eternal weight

  672. of glory

  673. that is not worthy

  674. to be compared

  675. with anything

  676. in this world.

  677. The Apostle Paul

  678. speaks of this.

  679. He says to the Corinthians,

  680. for this light,

  681. momentary affliction

  682. is preparing for us

  683. an eternal weight

  684. of glory

  685. beyond all comparison

  686. as we look

  687. not to things

  688. that are seen

  689. but to the things

  690. that are unseen.

  691. for the things

  692. that are seen

  693. are transient

  694. but the things

  695. that are unseen

  696. are eternal.

  697. Friends,

  698. those of you

  699. who have tasted

  700. this weight of glory

  701. beyond all comparison,

  702. you know

  703. of what I speak.

  704. And those of you

  705. who have not yet

  706. tasted this truth,

  707. come to Jesus,

  708. behold him,

  709. and you will understand

  710. that all these sufferings

  711. of this world

  712. are nothing

  713. compared to knowing Christ.

  714. You see, friends,

  715. we worship a God

  716. who does not fear suffering.

  717. He himself

  718. came down

  719. into this world

  720. in the person of Jesus

  721. and he knowingly

  722. and willingly

  723. and volitionally

  724. suffered the punishment

  725. of a slave

  726. on the cross.

  727. And he became like us

  728. in every way.

  729. Scripture says

  730. in the book of Hebrews,

  731. in the days

  732. of his flesh,

  733. Jesus offered up

  734. prayers and supplications

  735. with loud cries

  736. and tears

  737. to him who was able

  738. to save him from death.

  739. And he was heard

  740. because of his reverence.

  741. And although

  742. he was a son,

  743. he learned obedience

  744. through what he suffered.

  745. And being made perfect,

  746. he became the source

  747. of eternal salvation

  748. to all who obey him.

  749. Christians,

  750. if Jesus

  751. became perfect

  752. through suffering,

  753. how much more

  754. will God take

  755. our imperfect lives

  756. and perfect them

  757. through the suffering

  758. we experience?

  759. Therefore,

  760. on account of this,

  761. Jesus says

  762. to the church

  763. in Smyrna

  764. in Revelation 2.10,

  765. do not fear

  766. what you are about

  767. to suffer.

  768. The profound truth

  769. of the matter is,

  770. O Christian,

  771. that when you find

  772. yourself to be poor,

  773. turn to God

  774. and become rich.

  775. When you are in pain,

  776. cast yourself upon him

  777. and receive the consolation

  778. of his presence.

  779. When you are lonely,

  780. receive the fellowship

  781. of the Holy Spirit.

  782. When you are betrayed

  783. or persecuted,

  784. go to the one

  785. who is betrayed

  786. and persecuted

  787. for you.

  788. Endure suffering

  789. for Christ

  790. and Christ

  791. will redeem it.

  792. And therefore,

  793. do not fear suffering.

  794. Well, friends,

  795. we've discussed

  796. suffering,

  797. but there is one more

  798. important matter

  799. to cover.

  800. We all must face suffering.

  801. That much is clear.

  802. But what of

  803. that other reality

  804. that we all must face?

  805. What about death?

  806. death?

  807. This is unavoidable

  808. for us, too.

  809. So what words

  810. does Jesus say

  811. to us

  812. who are facing death?

  813. Jesus says this

  814. to the church

  815. in Smyrna

  816. in Revelation 2,

  817. 10 through 11.

  818. He says,

  819. Be faithful

  820. unto death

  821. and I will give you

  822. the crown of life.

  823. He who has an ear,

  824. let him hear

  825. what the Spirit

  826. says to the churches.

  827. The one who conquers

  828. will not be hurt

  829. by the second death.

  830. From these words,

  831. friends,

  832. we gather

  833. that this persecution

  834. that was to come

  835. upon the church

  836. in Smyrna

  837. was going to be

  838. very severe.

  839. So Jesus exhorts them.

  840. He says,

  841. Be faithful

  842. unto death

  843. and he says this

  844. with a promise

  845. and I will give you

  846. the crown of life.

  847. It should be mentioned

  848. again

  849. that what Jesus says

  850. to the church

  851. in Smyrna,

  852. he says to you,

  853. Christian,

  854. Be faithful

  855. in all things

  856. even unto death

  857. and I will give you

  858. the crown of life.

  859. By this,

  860. Jesus means

  861. that we should be willing

  862. to sacrifice

  863. all things

  864. in obedience

  865. to him

  866. and his word

  867. even at the cost

  868. of our lives

  869. just as Jesus

  870. laid his life down

  871. for us.

  872. And by being faithful

  873. unto death,

  874. Jesus also means

  875. that we should be

  876. faithful to him

  877. throughout our whole lives

  878. even to the point

  879. of death.

  880. For you see,

  881. says Jesus,

  882. if you are faithful

  883. unto death,

  884. you will receive

  885. the crown of life

  886. and to the one

  887. who conquers,

  888. you will not be hurt

  889. by the second death.

  890. Now,

  891. this phrase,

  892. the second death,

  893. can be mysterious

  894. to some

  895. but it's clear

  896. from the scriptures

  897. that Jesus

  898. is speaking

  899. of that second death

  900. of hell.

  901. That second death

  902. that comes

  903. after bodily death

  904. where one

  905. is eternally cast

  906. from the presence

  907. of God.

  908. And if this

  909. is the second death,

  910. then logically

  911. the first death

  912. is the earthly death

  913. when our earthly body

  914. passes away.

  915. And so given this,

  916. there are two kinds

  917. of deaths

  918. from Jesus' perspective.

  919. The first death

  920. is that which is

  921. the earthly

  922. or bodily death

  923. that we all face.

  924. And the second death

  925. is that which takes

  926. place in hell

  927. and is reserved

  928. for those who reject

  929. Jesus.

  930. We as Christians,

  931. we all face

  932. the first death,

  933. the death of our bodies.

  934. But afterwards,

  935. we are all rescued

  936. from it.

  937. We are rescued

  938. from that first death

  939. by being resurrected.

  940. resurrected.

  941. And then when judgment

  942. comes,

  943. we are spared

  944. from the second death

  945. by being redeemed

  946. and forgiven

  947. by Jesus.

  948. So we as Christians

  949. do not face

  950. the second death

  951. at all.

  952. Logically then,

  953. if we are resurrected

  954. after the first death

  955. and we do not face

  956. the second death,

  957. then what can we conclude

  958. but that we should not

  959. fear either death?

  960. Christian,

  961. the sum of what

  962. I'm saying is this.

  963. When your end

  964. is coming,

  965. when your time

  966. on this earth

  967. hastens to a close,

  968. when the sun

  969. is setting on your life,

  970. whether you have lived

  971. many or few years,

  972. whatever age you are in,

  973. when the door

  974. to this world

  975. is closing,

  976. then you have

  977. nothing to fear.

  978. Jesus has promised

  979. to resurrect you

  980. from this death

  981. and he has promised

  982. that you will not

  983. be hurt

  984. by the second death.

  985. And the whole

  986. New Testament

  987. proclaims

  988. that Jesus

  989. will rescue you

  990. from these things.

  991. In fact,

  992. the whole New Testament

  993. proclaims

  994. that Jesus

  995. came to die

  996. in your place

  997. to destroy death.

  998. The whole purpose

  999. of Jesus

  1000. departing from

  1001. his throne in heaven

  1002. and becoming human

  1003. and partaking

  1004. of flesh and blood

1005. was so that he might

  1006. die to destroy death

  1007. for you

  1008. and for God's glory.

  1009. Scripture says

  1010. in Hebrews chapter 2,

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  1011. since therefore

  1012. the children,

  1013. that's us,

  1014. since therefore

  1015. the children share

  1016. in flesh and blood,

  1017. Jesus himself

  1018. likewise partook

  1019. of the same things,

  1020. that through death

  1021. he might destroy

  1022. the one

  1023. who has the power

  1024. of death,

  1025. that is the devil,

  1026. and deliver

  1027. all those

  1028. who through fear

  1029. of death

  1030. were subject

  1031. to lifelong slavery.

  1032. And so for you,

  1033. Christian,

1034. when you are facing death,

  1035. when your end

  1036. is coming,

  1037. do not fear.

  1038. Jesus has destroyed

  1039. the power of death

  1040. and the grave.

  1041. And therefore,

1042. Jesus says to the church

  1043. in Smyrna,

  1044. be faithful unto death

1045. and I will give you

  1046. the crown of life.

  1047. And he adds,

  1048. the one who conquers

  1049. will not be hurt

  1050. by the second death.

1051. But after all these things,

  1052. I should mention

  1053. there is also

  1054. in Jesus' letter

  1055. to the church

  1056. in Smyrna

  1057. an additional word

  1058. of consolation

  1059. about facing death.

1060. This is at the very

  1061. beginning of the letter.

  1062. It's in Revelation chapter 2,

    Revelation 2:8

  1063. verse 8.

  1064. At the very start,

  1065. Jesus announces himself

  1066. and he says,

  1067. quote,

  1068. I am the first

  1069. and the last

  1070. who is dead

1071. and has come to life.

  1072. In this verse,

  1073. Jesus identifies himself

1074. as the one who was dead

1075. and who came to life.

  1076. Brothers and sisters,

  1077. what a precious Savior

  1078. we have in Jesus.

1079. He's able to rescue you

  1080. from death

  1081. because he's been there.

  1082. He's gone down

1083. to the gates of hell

  1084. in person.

  1085. He fought death

  1086. and won.

  1087. It is he

  1088. who was dead

1089. and came to life again.

  1090. He knows

  1091. all about death.

  1092. He went to its

  1093. outer limits.

1094. He saw it face to face.

  1095. He descended

  1096. to the pit.

1097. He let it come upon him

  1098. and he defeated it

  1099. for all time

  1100. for you

  1101. and for all you

  1102. who believe.

  1103. The grave,

  1104. the tomb,

  1105. the crypt,

  1106. none of these things

  1107. had power

  1108. over Jesus.

  1109. Scripture likens

  1110. Jesus defeating death

  1111. to Jesus defeating

  1112. the great dragon

  1113. or Jesus commuting

  1114. your sentence

  1115. or freeing you

  1116. from prison

  1117. or taking your place.

  1118. And all this imagery

  1119. serves to communicate

1120. that you do not need

  1121. to fear death,

  1122. O Christian.

  1123. Death has died

  1124. through Jesus Christ

  1125. and you,

  1126. when you die,

  1127. you will live forever

  1128. beholding your Savior

  1129. face to face,

1130. which is better by far.

  1131. Christians,

1132. I have one final word

  1133. of exhortation

  1134. to you.

  1135. Jesus says

  1136. to the church

  1137. in Smyrna

  1138. in Revelation 2.10,

  1139. he says to those

  1140. Christians back then

  1141. that some of them

  1142. would be imprisoned

  1143. for ten days

  1144. and he counsels them

  1145. to be faithful

  1146. unto death.

1147. And I wish I could tell you

  1148. what the Christians

  1149. in Smyrna

  1150. suffered in that time

  1151. and how they persevered

  1152. in their imprisonment,

  1153. but all that

  1154. has been lost

  1155. to history.

  1156. We don't know

  1157. exactly what happened

  1158. regarding that imprisonment,

  1159. but we do have

  1160. another witness,

  1161. another witness

  1162. from a member

  1163. of that very church

  1164. in Smyrna

  1165. who received

  1166. this letter

  1167. from Jesus.

  1168. History tells us

  1169. that the Apostle John

  1170. sent this letter

  1171. to the church

  1172. in Smyrna

  1173. probably in the 80s

1174. or in the early 90s

  1175. of the first century

  1176. when he wrote

  1177. the book of Revelation.

  1178. And it so happens

  1179. that one of John's

  1180. own disciples

  1181. was actually

  1182. from Smyrna

  1183. itself

  1184. and he went on

  1185. to become

  1186. the leader

  1187. of the church

  1188. in Smyrna.

  1189. This man's name

  1190. was Polycarp

  1191. and it actually

  1192. is very possible

  1193. that Polycarp

  1194. was even sitting

  1195. in Smyrna's congregation

  1196. on that very day

  1197. when Jesus' letter

  1198. in Revelation

  1199. was read to them.

1200. And we know a bit

  1201. about Polycarp's life.

  1202. We know it seems

  1203. that he took

  1204. this letter to heart

  1205. because he remained

  1206. steadfast in suffering

  1207. through many decades

  1208. of ministry.

1209. We know this in part

  1210. because of a letter

  1211. that Polycarp wrote

  1212. that we still have.

  1213. He wrote this letter

  1214. around 107 A.D.

  1215. and he records

  1216. this passage

  1217. about suffering.

  1218. He says this,

  1219. Let us therefore

  1220. hold steadfastly

  1221. and unceasingly

  1222. to our hope

  1223. and the guarantee

  1224. of our righteousness

  1225. who is Christ Jesus

  1226. who bore our sins

  1227. in his body

  1228. upon the tree,

  1229. who committed

  1230. no sin

  1231. and no deceit

1232. was found in his mouth.

  1233. Instead,

  1234. for our sakes,

  1235. he endured all things

1236. in order that we might

  1237. live in him.

  1238. Let us therefore

  1239. become imitators

  1240. of his patient endurance

1241. and if we should suffer

1242. for the sake of his name,

  1243. let us glorify him.

1244. For this is the example

  1245. he set for us

  1246. in his own person

  1247. and this is what

  1248. we have believed.

  1249. Friends,

  1250. here Polycarp

  1251. echoes Jesus' letter

  1252. and exhorts his church

  1253. in Smyrna

  1254. to be faithful

  1255. in suffering.

  1256. And many years later,

  1257. Polycarp modeled

1258. not just what it is

  1259. to suffer for Jesus,

1260. but also what it is

  1261. to not fear death

  1262. for Jesus.

  1263. After a long

  1264. and fruitful ministry,

  1265. Polycarp was brought

  1266. before a Roman governor

  1267. who threatened

  1268. to execute him

  1269. if he did not

  1270. deny Jesus.

  1271. And Polycarp

  1272. uttered these words.

  1273. He said,

  1274. for 86 years

1275. I have been his servant

1276. and he has done me

  1277. no wrong.

  1278. How can I blaspheme

1279. my king who saved me?

1280. And then with those words,

1281. Polycarp went off to die.

  1282. Polycarp remembered

  1283. Jesus' words

  1284. to his congregation

  1285. so many decades before.

1286. The words where Jesus said,

  1287. do not fear

  1288. what you are about

  1289. to suffer

  1290. and be faithful

  1291. unto death

1292. and I will give you

  1293. the crown of life.

  1294. Friends,

  1295. the sum and total

  1296. of our Christian life

1297. is to lay our lives

  1298. down for Jesus.

  1299. When suffering

  1300. and death

  1301. come upon you

  1302. and they will,

  1303. whether they come

  1304. through persecution

  1305. or bodily ailment

  1306. or family catastrophe

  1307. or through any

  1308. other circumstance,

  1309. then like Polycarp,

  1310. remember our Lord Jesus

  1311. who suffered

  1312. for you

  1313. and who died

  1314. for you

  1315. and become imitators

  1316. of that patient

  1317. endurance of Jesus.

  1318. Remember his words

  1319. to the church

  1320. in Smyrna,

  1321. do not fear suffering

1322. and do not fear death

1323. for though for a time

1324. you will have to endure

  1325. these things,

  1326. Jesus knows your suffering

1327. and he is working for you

  1328. in such things

  1329. an eternal weight

  1330. of glory

  1331. and an everlasting

  1332. spiritual treasure

1333. that you may partake of

  1334. here and now

  1335. and forevermore.

  1336. friends,

  1337. let's pray together.

  1338. Oh Father,

  1339. we come to you

1340. and we bow our hearts

  1341. before you.

  1342. Lord,

1343. we pray for those of us

  1344. who are suffering

  1345. right now.

  1346. We pray, Lord,

1347. that you would comfort them,

1348. that you would encourage them.

  1349. Lord,

1350. that you would bless them

1351. in the midst of trials

  1352. and temptations

  1353. and tests.

  1354. We pray, Lord,

  1355. that when we suffer

1356. we would turn to you

  1357. and receive comfort

  1358. and consolation

  1359. from your Holy Spirit.

  1360. Father,

  1361. we pray

1362. that we would not fear

  1363. these things

  1364. but that in them

  1365. we would see

  1366. that unsurpassable

  1367. weight of glory

  1368. that far outweighs

  1369. all these things

  1370. in this world.

  1371. Lord,

  1372. we pray

1373. that you would wipe away

  1374. our tears,

1375. that you would help us

  1376. to stand fast,

  1377. Lord,

  1378. if we face persecution,

1379. that you would help us

  1380. to endure.

  1381. Lord,

1382. we pray that you would

  1383. give us joy

  1384. in these things,

  1385. that we would rejoice

1386. knowing that you are glorified

  1387. and that,

  1388. Lord Jesus,

  1389. you will return.

  1390. And we pray this

  1391. in the mighty name

  1392. of Jesus.

  1393. Amen.

  1394. Amen.

  1395. Amen.

  1396. Amen.

  1397. Amen.
