  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. One of the practices here at Trinity is we have expositional preaching, which means the

  3. main point of the text is the main point of the sermon as we walk chapter by chapter through

  4. the Bible.

  5. Well, today, we're going to jump ahead one chapter as we talk about the church at Sardis,

  6. and Lord willing, we'll rewind and talk about the church at Thyatira and Pergamon.

  7. So, let's go to the Lord in prayer together, family.

  8. O Father, be Thou our vision.

  9. As the psalmist prayed, revive us again, that we may rejoice in You, show us Your steadfast

  10. love, and grant us Your salvation.

  11. By the Spirit's power, would we fix our eyes upon You.

  12. Would the light of Your Word shine into our hearts and minds?

  13. Gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim the honor and glory of Christ's great name.

  14. In His name we pray.

  15. Amen.

  16. What is the greatest lie that a church can believe?

  17. What is the most dangerous lie this church can believe?

  18. Well, depending on who you ask, you might get different answers.

  19. Some might say the lie of the prosperity gospel.

  20. Others, the lie of pragmatism, leading churches to brush sin under the rug.

  21. Or the danger of churches being captive by secular worldviews.

  22. These are all dangers, but there is an even greater one, a more dangerous one, a sinister

  23. one.

  24. And the lie is this.

  25. When an entire church falsely believes they are going to heaven, but in reality, they

  26. are hellbound.

  27. A church full of goats who sincerely believe they are sheep, living in a delusion.

  28. How do you wake up a dead church from this delusion?

  29. Well, in the text before us, like an air raid siren, Christ trumpets a wake-up call to a

  30. dead church.

  31. Our text this morning is Revelation chapter 3, verses 1 to 6.

    Revelation 3:1–6

  32. And while you are turning there, we will look at this text in three points.

  33. Point number one is the rebuke that Jesus delivers to a dead church.

  34. Point number two, the revival that is needed for a dead church.

  35. And point number three, the reward for the faithful remnant.

  36. So the rebuke, the revival, and the reward.

  37. Let's read God's word together.

  38. And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, the words of him who has the seven spirits of

  39. God and the seven stars.

  40. I know your works.

  41. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

  42. Wake up and strengthen what remains as about to die, for I have not found your works complete

  43. in the sight of my God.

  44. Remember then what you received and heard, keep it and repent.

  45. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief.

  46. And you will not know at what hour I will come against you.

  47. Yet.

  48. Still a few names in Sardis.

  49. People who have not soiled their garments.

  50. And they will walk with me in white.

  51. For they are worthy.

  52. The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments.

  53. And I will never blot his name out of the book of life.

  54. I will confess his name before my father and before his angels.

  55. He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches.

  56. This is God's word.

  57. Picture the scene in Sardis.

  58. The anticipation and excitement has been building.

  59. Word has spread that a letter will be delivered to your church.

  60. And this letter is no ordinary letter.

  61. This letter is written by the apostle John himself with the authority of the Lord Jesus.

  62. Jesus.

  63. And this letter has been delivered along a postal route in a circle, as it were.

  64. And now the church at Sardis is next.

  65. And you can feel the electricity.

  66. You wonder to yourself, I wonder what Jesus thinks about my church.

  67. The church has been growing, busy as usual.

  68. Things are going pretty well.

  69. And you enter into the bustling gathering.

  70. There are some opening prayers.

  71. You've sung some hymns.

  72. And now the moment you've been waiting for.

  73. But what you get is unexpected.

  74. Like a wrecking ball, Jesus deals a scathing rebuke.

  75. Instead of giving them a trophy, Jesus takes out a sledgehammer.

  76. Jesus says to them at the end of verse 1, I know your works.

  77. You have the reputation of being alive.

  78. But you are dead.

  79. What a devastating rebuke.

  80. A dead church.

  81. What a grim word.

  82. Dead.

  83. Is there a worse description Jesus can give a church?

  84. What a sad, sobering thought.

  85. In these seven letters, Jesus would begin with a commendation before getting into his concerns.

  86. Here, there is none of that.

  87. For most of them, there is nothing worth commending.

  88. Whereas other churches were experiencing hardships for their faith, there is none of that here.

  89. No mention of the thunderstorm of persecution.

  90. No mention of an opposition to false teachers.

  91. No mention of suffering.

  92. This church is dead.

  93. Jesus, the sovereign Lord, says, I know your works.

  94. Jesus sees them and says, you are a church with a high reputation.

  95. Literally, it had a high name.

  96. But the reputation did not match the reality.

  97. They are Christians in name only.

  98. You can profess Christ, but never truly possess Christ.

  99. It has been said that Sardis was a city of past glories.

  100. In many ways, Sardis was a city on the decline, and so was this church.

  101. Likewise, the church was living on past glories with no present reality.

  102. Maybe what Jesus is telling this church describes you this morning.

  103. You attend church.

  104. You have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead.

  105. Your reputation does not match the reality.

  106. You know, it's easy to start off vibrantly, gain a reputation, and then fall away as time goes on.

  107. To have memories of past faithfulness, but no present reality.

  108. Consider, you and I can likewise be deceived.

  109. Deceiving to think you have everything, but have nothing.

  110. To think you're running the race, but you're not even in the race.

  111. Appearances may deceive others, but God is not fooled by appearances.

  112. Others see a living church, Christ sees a graveyard.

  113. Like whitewashed tombs, outwardly beautiful, inwardly dead.

  114. In Matthew 23, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees in the same way.

  115. You who look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.

  116. Oh, this church looked beautiful on the outside.

  117. I mean, they had a high reputation, commended and praised by others.

  118. Other Christians may have asked, what church do you attend?

  119. Oh, wow, you go to the church in Sardis?

  120. That's a great church.

  121. I mean, this is the kind of church you recommend to others.

  122. This is the kind of church where the singing is loud.

  123. Relevant Bible teaching.

  124. A great fellowship hour.

  125. A growing membership list.

  126. A ballooning budget.

  127. Humming with activity.

  128. But there is no life.

  129. This is a picture of nominal Christianity.

  130. They are walking in a presumption of salvation.

  131. This church had no discernment like Ephesus.

  132. No perseverance through persecution like Smyrna.

  133. No faithful witnesses like Pergamum.

  134. No endurance like Thyatira.

  135. There was no trusting in God's faithfulness.

  136. No sweet communion with God.

  137. No genuine humility.

  138. No deadness to the world.

  139. No contrite heart.

  140. No true repentance.

  141. And no love for God.

  142. Sardis had none of these things.

  143. Friends, you and I look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

  144. He searches you out.

  145. He knows you.

  146. There is no hiding.

  147. Now, one of the ways that we tend to be deceived about our spiritual condition

  148. is we think our works are a good indicator about our relationship with God.

  149. Someone could say, look here.

  150. I give money.

  151. I serve the poor.

  152. Others have even said I've helped them in their walk with God.

  153. Others may have said, I've prophesied in your name.

  154. I've done mighty works in your name.

  155. I've cast out demons in your name.

  156. Don't these things prove that I am a Christian?

  157. Well, this appears to be the situation in Sardis.

  158. On the one hand, a heart of faith and repentance will produce good works.

  159. Jesus said a good tree will bear good fruit.

  160. But on the other hand, friend, there is a category called dead works in the New Testament.

  161. Notice what Jesus says to the church at Sardis in verse 2.

  162. Jesus tells them, I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.

  163. Now, is this like bringing home your report card?

  164. You get all A's, but there is only one C.

  165. And your parents just begin to berate you.

  166. You can never measure up.

  167. Is God like that when he says, your works are not complete in the sight of my God?

  168. Well, maybe you grew up with parents like that.

  169. But understand, you are wrong if you think God is like that.

  170. But understand, God will never be satisfied with those who merely go through the motions,

  171. who mouth the words, but whose hearts are far from him.

  172. He is saying some religious deeds may gain approval from others, but not in the sight of my father.

  173. Their deeds were an empty shell.

  174. Nothing inside of it.

  175. This is just external religion, but no heart transformation.

  176. These are dead works.

  177. Know that God does not want your deeds or your words.

  178. He wants your heart.

  179. Christ has given me all of you.

  180. No half measures.

  181. No half-hearted obedience.

  182. Christ will not tolerate no fly zones in your hearts.

  183. He wants all of it.

  184. He doesn't want to reorder the furniture in your living room.

  185. He has come to knock the whole house down and to renovate something entirely new.

  186. All of your desires, all of your dreams, all of your hopes must be in his hands.

  187. You must give him all.

  188. You know, the Bible doesn't present salvation as you make a decision for Jesus,

  189. and he acts as kind of an insurance policy in your back pocket.

  190. You never know bad things might happen to you after you die.

  191. No, rather the true grace that saves is a grace that changes us.

  192. True Christians are changed from the inside out.

  193. Christians are indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

  194. The moment a person comes to know Christ,

  195. the Spirit takes out the heart of stone and puts in a new heart of flesh.

  196. Before your conversion, the darkness reigned in your life,

  197. and we walked in darkness.

  198. But after your conversion, the Spirit gives life,

  199. and we now walk in the light.

  200. True Christianity is about our hearts being flooded with the supernatural love of God.

  201. True Christianity is about obedience to God and love for others,

  202. about fruits of the Holy Spirit, of true heart and repentance.

  203. Christianity is about life, of being truly alive.

  204. Whoever has the Son has life, John would say.

  205. I wonder if you are alive today.

  206. Church, let there be no illusion that this can never happen to us.

  207. You know, our hearts are prone to wonder, aren't they?

  208. You know, in the book of Judges, the mighty Samson's hair was cut off,

  209. and it says he did not know that the Lord had left him.

  210. Likewise, churches never realize that the Lord has left the congregation.

  211. Sadly, outwardly, you can run a church without God.

  212. Let me ask you a question.

  213. If the Lord left this church tomorrow, would anything change?

  214. Would we sense anything has gone missing in our worship, in our life together?

  215. Would we know that the Lord has left us?

  216. You know, consider the nature of sin in this passage.

  217. You know, sin is a spiritual disease that deadens your heart,

  218. like frostbite, eating away and numbing your soul,

  219. and you never realize your soul is dead.

  220. These are nominal Christians in the first century in a church founded by the apostles.

  221. And now these apostles were being executed.

  222. In John's lifetime, this is a church filled with nominal Christians.

  223. How much more do we need this warning?

  224. By way of application, let me speak to you who are leaders in the church,

  225. especially those of you who teach God's word or serve publicly,

  226. where you might gain a reputation for being alive.

  227. You know, teaching can be a great way to force you to meditate on God's word.

  228. But friend, don't mistake exercising your gifts

  229. to mean that you are personally experiencing God's grace.

  230. Don't make that mistake.

  231. It's very easy to make that mistake.

  232. To go on astray on this point is how you end up dead when others think you are alive.

  233. To think performing deeds for the Lord, effectively counseling others,

  234. to mean that you are truly alive.

  235. That is not so.

  236. You might think you are exercising God's gifts,

  237. and you never have God himself.

  238. You can teach others what the house looks like

  239. and never enter and go on yourself.

  240. Consider, does teaching others make you want to pray with God,

  241. to be with him, to praise him, to glorify him?

  242. Does it give you a poverty of spirit before the omnipotent God,

  243. to go deeper into his word?

  244. Do you marvel at his mercies toward you?

  245. Do you weep with joy at God's mercies in your life

  246. as you held out this same mercy to others?

  247. Or are you tempted to merely go through the motions?

  248. How sad to be able to talk about the love of God

  249. and never experience it yourself.

  250. To have correct doctrine, you don't have Jesus.

  251. You know, you can teach on the importance of forgiveness

  252. and never actually forgive other Christians.

  253. Don't be content with dead Christianity.

  254. To have a reputation but not have the reality.

  255. Notice there's one other thing ailing this church in Sardis

  256. that Jesus rebukes.

  257. You know, in this world,

  258. a church is not meant to have home court advantage.

  259. But our text hints that this church is right at home in the world.

  260. And this is implied in verse 4,

  261. where it says the faithful few had not soiled their garments.

  262. Most of this church had in fact soiled themselves.

  263. Now, not outwardly, inwardly.

  264. The idea of soiling something is what it sounds like.

  265. It's foul.

  266. It's a picture of contamination from sin.

  267. In this case, it seems this sin comes in the form of compromising.

  268. Whereas Jesus, remember, commended the church in Smyrna

  269. for confessing his name in a hostile culture,

  270. in this case, it seemed they wanted to keep a low profile.

  271. Rather than conforming to Christ,

  272. they wanted to conform more to the world.

  273. This is a church full of chameleons who camouflage themselves.

  274. You know, wouldn't it be a sad thing

  275. for someone to say at your funeral,

  276. you know, I never knew he or she was a Christian.

  277. I suspect many could say that of this church.

  278. Jesus warned that a love for this world

  279. and a true love for God cannot coexist.

  280. A love for the world will choke the seeds that are planted.

  281. Because of that, this church was dead.

  282. What's a dead church supposed to do?

  283. This leads to point number two,

  284. the call to spiritual revival.

  285. Jesus doesn't wipe his hands clean,

  286. but dead church had soiled his garments.

  287. I'm done with you.

  288. He doesn't do that.

  289. Instead, Jesus calls a dead church to spiritual revival.

  290. Now, when I say revival,

  291. I am not talking about an evangelism strategy.

  292. You know, engineering it through our own efforts.

  293. You can't put a revival on the calendar.

  294. No, rather, revival is a supernatural, God-initiated work.

  295. Now, where am I getting that from?

  296. Now, remember, in each of these letters,

  297. John points to an aspect of Christ's character

  298. the church needs to recall.

  299. The revival to this lifeless church

  300. comes at the beginning of verse one.

  301. And to the angel of the church in Sardis writes,

  302. the words of him who has the seven spirits of God

  303. and the seven stars.

  304. This is a declaration of the sovereignty

  305. and sufficiency of the Lord Jesus over the church.

  306. In the one hand, he has the seven spirits.

  307. He has the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

  308. In his other hand, he has the seven stars.

  309. Remember, we saw those seven stars in chapter one.

  310. These are messengers.

  311. Angelic or human messengers.

  312. Either way, Jesus has authority over them.

  313. In the one hand, Jesus has the Holy Spirit.

  314. In his other hand, he has the church.

  315. And according to this vision, this revival,

  316. this spiritual awakening to the church

  317. must come from Jesus himself,

  318. by the Holy Spirit.

  319. Christ alone has the infinite power

  320. to save a church from a hollow profession.

  321. In verse two, before giving his prescriptions

  322. to this dead church,

  323. we see the urgency of the situation in the church.

  324. In verse two, he says,

  325. wake up and strengthen what remains

  326. and is about to die.

  327. Jesus says you must do these things

  328. and you must do them now.

  329. But when he says you are about to die,

  330. maybe there's some spark of life in the congregation.

  331. I take it to mean that Jesus is highlighting

  332. the urgency of this call.

  333. This is a patient that slams into the ER

  334. and their vitals are about to flatline.

  335. That's how dire this is.

  336. They are about to die.

  337. It has to be fixed and it must be fixed now.

  338. Today, not tomorrow.

  339. And Jesus gives three remedies

  340. to a church that is about to die.

  341. The first is to wake up

  342. at the beginning of verse two.

  343. You can translate it as be alert,

  344. to be watchful.

  345. John shifts the metaphor from a dead church

  346. and now it's a sleepy church.

  347. They need the spirit to give an awakening,

  348. to wake them up out of their spiritual slumber.

  349. But these words would have been a thunderbolt

  350. right into the heart of the church at Sardis.

  351. Because you see, the city of Sardis

  352. had been invaded and destroyed

  353. because they fell asleep.

  354. Not once, but twice.

  355. The city was built on a plateau

  356. 1,500 feet high.

  357. And it was said that a single soldier

  358. could have kept an army from coming up.

  359. But in both cases,

  360. the guards and the city fell asleep.

  361. And twice the city fell.

  362. Jesus is saying,

  363. if you don't wake up,

  364. devastation will come on you

  365. just like it came on Sardis.

  366. You are more vulnerable

  367. than you can ever realize.

  368. Verse three goes on and says,

  369. therefore, if you do not wake up,

  370. I will come like a thief

  371. and you will not know

  372. at what hour I will come to you.

  373. You know, thieves don't give notice.

  374. See it to your place at 2 a.m.

  375. Meet me there.

  376. No, they come in an hour

  377. you do not expect.

  378. Suddenly and unexpectedly,

  379. judgment will come

  380. like a thief in the night.

  381. And this is referring to a judgment

  382. on this specific congregation,

  383. but also the final judgment,

  384. the second death.

  385. In 1 Thessalonians 5,

  386. that Anna read,

  387. Paul writes,

  388. for you yourselves are fully aware

  389. that the day of the Lord

  390. will come like a thief in the night.

  391. Judgment will come

  392. when you least expect it.

  393. So today you must wake up

  394. and not tomorrow.

  395. Tomorrow may be too late.

  396. If you don't turn for your sin,

  397. Jesus will say,

  398. enough is enough.

  399. And he will unexpectedly

  400. sweep in and destroy you.

  401. Your house is built on sand

  402. and the storm of judgment

  403. will come for you.

  404. That's what the church,

  405. that's what he's saying

  406. to the church at Sardis.

  407. And he's telling us today.

  408. And God is not coming

  409. to take a city again.

  410. He is coming for your soul.

  411. So,

  412. the first command is to wake up.

  413. The second command

  414. is to strengthen what remains.

  415. So much has gone wrong.

  416. But underneath all the rottenness

  417. and decay,

  418. there is something

  419. that must be strengthened.

  420. Something that must be preserved.

  421. Now, what are they to strengthen?

  422. Well, later in the text,

  423. we see a remnant.

  424. Maybe it's strengthening the remnant.

  425. But I would suggest

  426. that seeing this

  427. as strengthening the things

  428. of the remnant treasures.

  429. Strengthening the things

  430. that refresh the remnant.

  431. This church had been

  432. churning out toxic waste.

  433. And John is saying,

  434. strengthen the life-giving things

  435. that will nourish the saints.

  436. Strengthen things like

  437. the means of grace,

  438. like preaching,

  439. Bible study,

  440. and prayer,

  441. and fellowship,

  442. and the ordinances.

  443. This is the water

  444. that will nourish the saints.

  445. Saturate yourself

  446. with these things,

  447. John is saying.

  448. Paul and Romans would say,

  449. faith comes from hearing,

  450. and hearing through

  451. the word of Christ.

  452. Strengthen the hearing

  453. of the word.

  454. And we see the sufficiency

  455. of God's word

  456. for the life of the church here.

  457. The word melts

  458. the frozen heart,

  459. breaks apart the rocky soil,

  460. and steals the spine.

  461. Strengthen those things.

  462. By way of application,

  463. not only should we be doing

  464. this in the church,

  465. but are we nourishing ourselves

  466. in our homes?

  467. Fathers,

  468. let me address you

  469. for a second.

  470. Are you instructing

  471. your family

  472. in God's word

  473. to strengthen them,

  474. to encourage them,

  475. to refresh them?

  476. If you failed in this,

  477. begin today.

  478. Family worship

  479. to strengthen your family

  480. can be as simple

  481. as reading a verse,

  482. praying,

  483. and singing together

  484. as a family.

  485. Strengthen your family.

  486. Refresh them.

  487. Encourage them.

  488. But not only are they

  489. to wake up

  490. and strengthen

  491. what remains.

  492. Third,

  493. to remember

  494. what you received

  495. and heard,

  496. keep it and repent.

  497. To be restored

  498. as a church,

  499. they have to remember

  500. what they first received.

  501. We see here

  502. true supernatural revival

  503. is done

  504. through the normal

  505. gospel ministry.

  506. John isn't calling them

  507. to something new.

  508. No new evangelistic methods,

  509. no new ministry strategy,

  510. no new techniques.

  511. John is saying,

  512. go back to the very beginning.

  513. Remember the apostolic teaching

  514. that was delivered to you.

  515. Not only the scriptures,

  516. but the gospel itself.

  517. The church had abandoned

  518. the priority of the gospel.

  519. And it's the gospel

  520. that the Spirit uses

  521. to give life to a church.

  522. You're dead

  523. because you have abandoned

  524. the fountain of living water.

  525. You know,

  526. likewise,

  527. in 2 Timothy,

  528. Paul would tell Timothy

  529. to endure in his ministry

  530. by depending on

  531. what he already has.

  532. After telling Timothy

  533. that the crowd does

  534. what the crowd always does,

  535. he says in chapter 3,

  536. verse 14,

  537. but as for you,

  538. continue in what you have learned

  539. and have firmly believed,

  540. knowing from whom

  541. you learned it.

  542. Church,

  543. we must never lose

  544. the centrality

  545. of the gospel.

  546. Remember it.

  547. Remember that there is

  548. only one God

  549. who is holy

  550. and righteous.

  551. He created you

  552. and me

  553. to bear his image,

  554. to resemble him

  555. by loving others

  556. and to love him

  557. above everything.

  558. But you and I

  559. have sinned

  560. against this good God.

  561. God is good

  562. and righteous

  563. and he cannot just

  564. brush our sin

  565. under the rug.

  566. He will punish sin.

  567. And because of our sin,

  568. there is a collision course

  569. with divine wrath

  570. and judgments.

  571. Think about it.

  572. If there was a judge

  573. on the bench

  574. and he never pronounced

  575. condemnation

  576. against lawbreakers

  577. who commit crimes

  578. of bloodshed,

  579. of sexual violence,

  580. such a judge

  581. is not good.

  582. Know that God

  583. will not only punish sin,

  584. he must.

  585. The judge of the earth

  586. will always do

  587. what is right.

  588. And the bad news is this,

  589. that apart from Christ,

  590. you will not find God

  591. to be your friends,

  592. but your enemy.

  593. Not because he is harsh,

  594. but because he is good

  595. and we are not.

  596. He sees the stains

  597. in our garments.

  598. You know,

  599. I wonder what stains

  600. are in your garments

  601. this morning.

  602. Not the stuff

  603. on the outside,

  604. but on the inside of you.

  605. Untold, buried secrets.

  606. If people knew

  607. what you had done,

  608. what you said,

  609. what you thought

  610. in your mind,

  611. that if others truly

  612. knew,

  613. you're afraid

  614. they would reject you.

  615. You've tried to wash out

  616. these stains

  617. in your own efforts,

  618. but it's never enough.

  619. You live in the shame

  620. of what you've done.

  621. Your own conscience

  622. continually points

  623. the finger

  624. and accuses you.

  625. How do we wash

  626. our garments

  627. and make them clean?

  628. Revelation 7,

    Revelation 7:14

  629. verse 14 tells us,

  630. they have washed

  631. their robes

  632. and made them white

  633. in the blood

  634. of the Lamb.

  635. Friends,

  636. this is the good news,

  637. is it not?

  638. In his great sovereign love,

  639. the Father sent his Son,

  640. Jesus,

  641. to rescue us.

  642. Fully God

  643. and fully man.

  644. The Creator

  645. stepped into the world,

  646. one who is truly alive.

  647. Christ's works

  648. were complete

  649. in the sight

  650. of his Father.

  651. By his perfect obedience,

  652. his garments

  653. were completely clean.

  654. But despite never sinning,

  655. he goes to a cross.

  656. The one who is truly alive

  657. was put to death,

  658. not for his crimes,

  659. but for the crimes

  660. and for all

  661. who had returned

  662. from their sin

  663. and put their trust

  664. in him alone.

  665. At the cross,

  666. the Father pours out

  667. his wrath

  668. on his own Son

  669. as our sin-bearing substitutes.

  670. The one whose garments

  671. were never stained

  672. bore your stains

  673. on the cross.

  674. On the third day,

  675. Christ rose again

  676. and is now seated

  677. at the right hand

  678. of the Father

  679. with the seven stars

  680. and the seven spirits

  681. in his hands.

  682. The Lamb came,

  683. the Lamb was slain,

  684. but praise God,

  685. the Lamb was raised

  686. to new life.

  687. And if you turn

  688. from your sin

  689. and look to him

  690. by faith,

  691. you can be truly alive

  692. today.

  693. If you are not

  694. a Christian,

  695. wake up.

  696. Wake up from

  697. the insanity of sin.

  698. Make a U-turn.

  699. Today,

  700. the garments

  701. of your soul

  702. can be white

  703. as snow.

  704. Why would you die?

  705. Come to this fountain

  706. so rich and sweet

  707. and cast yourself

  708. at the Savior's feet.

  709. It is there

  710. you can be made clean.

  711. Throw yourself

  712. at the mercy

  713. of the cross

  714. and exchange

  715. your filthy garments

  716. for white garments

  717. that Christ freely

  718. offers you.

  719. He's not only

  720. holding out

  721. his nail-scarred hands,

  722. he promises

  723. to take you

  724. into his arms.

  725. He will never

  726. turn you away.

  727. You must

  728. turn from your sin.

  729. You must repent.

  730. And to repent

  731. is to die to yourself,

  732. to submit yourself

  733. to the lordship

  734. of Christ.

  735. God,

  736. his command

  737. of repentance

  738. implies that

  739. he will receive you

  740. if you just turn

  741. to him.

  742. If you are a Christian,

  743. remember this good news.

  744. Keep it

  745. and repent.

  746. Remember when you

  747. were a brand new

  748. Christian.

  749. Do you remember

  750. those days

  751. when you were

  752. given a new name

  753. in Christ?

  754. Remember when you

  755. first believed

  756. and mercy

  757. was great

  758. and grace

  759. was free?

  760. Remember when

  761. you were given

  762. new garments.

  763. And keep the gospel

  764. family.

  765. Keep on guarding it.

  766. Keep on reminding

  767. each other of it.

  768. Keep on obeying it.

  769. You know,

  770. some treat repentance

  771. as some gross

  772. cold medicine

  773. that you take

  774. only when you need it.

  775. But the Christian life

  776. is one of

  777. constant repentance.

  778. We are constantly

  779. relying on the grace

  780. of God.

  781. You must constantly

  782. be going back

  783. to that well

  784. of mercy

  785. each day

  786. and admitting

  787. your need of him.

  788. Unceasingly relying

  789. upon his forgiveness.

  790. Sardis stopped

  791. repenting

  792. and so they stopped

  793. marveling

  794. at the mercies

  795. of God.

  796. But senior saints,

  797. let me encourage you

  798. that your walk

  799. now matters.

  800. You can thank God

  801. for his past

  802. faithfulness to you,

  803. but you cannot live

  804. on manna you ate

  805. 20 years ago.

  806. These last days

  807. matter.

  808. Make them count.

  809. Continue to wage

  810. war against sin.

  811. Stay in the race.

  812. I know many of you

  813. experienced

  814. many sorrows

  815. in the Christian life.

  816. Chronic fatigue

  817. and you were tired.

  818. But you must

  819. finish the race.

  820. By way of example,

  821. in 1992

  822. 400 meter Olympics,

  823. the favorite to win

  824. the gold medal

  825. was Derek Redmond.

  826. near the end

  827. of his sprint,

  828. he ruptured

  829. his hamstring,

  830. causing him

  831. to fall

  832. in the track

  833. in agony.

  834. While other

  835. athletes raced

  836. by him,

  837. he laid on the ground

  838. in tears.

  839. Finally,

  840. he rose to his feet

  841. and with pain,

  842. he dogged

  843. every step.

  844. But suddenly,

  845. a middle-aged man

  846. wearing a T-shirt

  847. and cap,

  848. fought through security

  849. and jumped

  850. from the stand.

  851. Arm in arm

  852. and shoulder in shoulder,

  853. the person carried

  854. the sprinter

  855. to the finish line.

  856. As they took

  857. the last step,

  858. the crowd exploded

  859. with tears of triumph.

  860. It was the sprinter's

  861. father

  862. who helped him

  863. to the finish line.

  864. Senior saint,

  865. let that be your story.

  866. As you finish the race,

  867. I solemnly charge you

  868. in the presence

  869. of God and his angels

  870. that you must finish

  871. the race.

  872. There is a prize

  873. at the finish line.

  874. You must keep going.

  875. And this is the last point,

  876. the prize for those

  877. who continue

  878. to walk with Christ.

  879. Point number three

  880. is the reward

  881. for the remnant

  882. in verses four to six.

  883. In verse four,

  884. Christ includes

  885. a commendation,

  886. not for many,

  887. but only a few,

  888. a remnant.

  889. Verse four,

  890. you still have a few names

  891. in Sardis.

  892. People who have not

  893. soiled their garments,

  894. and they will walk

  895. with me in whites,

  896. for they are worthy.

  897. These few are salt

  898. that have not lost

  899. their saltiness

  900. in a decaying world.

  901. God always keeps

  902. a remnant,

  903. does he not?

  904. God told Elijah

  905. during mass apostasy

  906. in Israel

  907. that he had a remnant

  908. of seven thousand

  909. who had not bowed

  910. the knee to Baal.

  911. A faithful remnant.

  912. It's always been like that.

  913. Whereas most of them

  914. had soiled their garments,

  915. a few people had not.

  916. They had not compromised.

  917. And these few Christians

  918. were out of step

  919. with their culture.

  920. But they were so near

  921. to God's heart.

  922. Christ commends them

  923. for their faithfulness.

  924. Heaven was on their mind,

  925. Christ in their heart,

  926. and the world at their back.

  927. Their hearts were set

  928. on the things

  929. where Christ is seated.

  930. And how discouraged

  931. these Christians

  932. must have been.

  933. One thing that struck me

  934. is that you will find

  935. the godliest Christians

  936. in some of the worst churches.

  937. I can't explain to you why.

  938. I don't know.

  939. But you will find

  940. the best Christians

  941. in some of the

  942. most nominal churches.

  943. They see the state

  944. of the world

  945. and the state

  946. of their own church

  947. and they are discouraged.

  948. Maybe you felt that way.

  949. Discouraged at the church

  950. in the state of the world.

  951. These discouraged saints

  952. needed to hear

  953. that Christ treasures them.

  954. You are not lost

  955. in the crowd.

  956. Your heavenly father

  957. sees you.

  958. These few faithful ones,

  959. the tenderness

  960. he shows to them.

  961. He says,

  962. these few Christians

  963. will walk with me

  964. in white

  965. for they are worthy.

  966. Because of their refusal

  967. to defile their garments

  968. under pressure,

  969. Christ says,

  970. you are worthy.

  971. Now this worthiness

  972. is not their own.

  973. This worthiness

  974. means there is no gap

  975. between their profession

  976. and their walk.

  977. As Paul would say,

  978. they are walking

  979. in a manner

  980. worthy of the gospel.

  981. Their righteousness

  982. is not their own

  983. but one that depends

  984. on God from faith.

  985. Now some of you

  986. are discouraged

  987. because you spend

  988. too much time

  989. watching the news

  990. or scrolling social media.

  991. Turn it off.

  992. Christ wants the church

  993. to look up.

  994. Christ is making promises

  995. to you to encourage you.

  996. You will walk

  997. with Christ in white.

  998. You will be in heaven

  999. and see him face to face.

  1000. You will be dressed

  1001. in glorious white garments.

1002. You may have garments now

  1003. decked with diamonds

  1004. and precious stones.

1005. That would be filthy rags

  1006. in comparison

  1007. to these white garments

1008. that Christ is offering us.

  1009. These are more glorious.

  1010. And white

  1011. is a prominent color

  1012. in Revelation.

  1013. White robes,

  1014. white horses,

  1015. white clouds,

  1016. white stones,

  1017. a great white throne.

  1018. White not only stands

  1019. for conquering,

  1020. not only stands

  1021. for being pure

  1022. and forgiven before God,

  1023. white also stands

  1024. for conquering.

  1025. These few are called

  1026. conquerors.

  1027. In Rome,

  1028. all the citizens

  1029. would dress in white

  1030. as they celebrate

  1031. a great victory.

  1032. And the church here

  1033. is triumphant.

  1034. The church is dressed

  1035. in white

  1036. as the lamb

  1037. ultimately triumphs

  1038. over his enemies,

  1039. like a Roman general

  1040. returning from a victory.

  1041. And these trials

1042. will give way to glory.

  1043. These in white garments

  1044. are called conquerors.

  1045. They have overcome.

  1046. Those who have victory

  1047. after their earthly struggle.

  1048. Church,

  1049. hold fast as conquerors.

1050. Even in this war against sin,

  1051. keep repenting,

  1052. keep obeying,

  1053. keep remembering.

  1054. That's how you conquer.

1055. Even though you go now

  1056. in rags,

  1057. then you will have

  1058. white robes in triumph.

1059. Though you bear the cross now,

1060. then you will be given

  1061. a crown.

  1062. Will the world

1063. put a crown on your head?

  1064. Christ gives you

  1065. a better one.

  1066. After finishing the race,

1067. there is laid for you

  1068. a crown of righteousness

  1069. laid up for you

  1070. in heaven.

  1071. The most glorious thing

  1072. you've ever experienced now

1073. will be but a dim candle

  1074. before the brightness

  1075. of that sun.

  1076. This is Christ

  1077. in all his glory

1078. coming to take you home.

1079. And this hope of glory

1080. is meant to produce joy

  1081. in the saints today.

1082. And no one can take

  1083. this joy from you.

  1084. Christ is calling you

  1085. to faith.

  1086. Church,

1087. don't settle for cheap fast food

  1088. when Christ offers you

  1089. a rich banquet

  1090. in his presence.

  1091. It's been written,

  1092. thy saints

1093. in all this glorious war

  1094. shall conquer

  1095. though they die.

  1096. They see the triumph

  1097. from afar

  1098. and seize it

  1099. with their eye.

  1100. Christians,

  1101. seize this triumph

  1102. by faith.

  1103. Though the world

  1104. thought little

1105. of these precious few saints,

1106. they had a high reputation

  1107. in heaven.

  1108. Christian,

  1109. no one might know

1110. your name in this life,

1111. but the King of kings

1112. and the Lord of lords

  1113. delights to honor

  1114. those who honor him.

  1115. He knows your name.

  1116. But amazingly,

1117. Jesus gives a second promise.

1118. He will never blot out

  1119. your name

1120. from the book of life.

1121. As Tom preached last week,

  1122. if you confess Christ,

  1123. many synagogues

1124. would blot out your name

  1125. from the membership rolls.

1126. and you would be killed.

  1127. Jesus is saying,

  1128. I will never,

  1129. no never,

1130. blot you out of my book.

1131. If you confess his name,

  1132. your name is written

  1133. in heaven.

1134. And Jesus gives a third promise.

  1135. It's a climax

  1136. to this whole passage.

  1137. Jesus says,

1138. I will confess his name

  1139. before my father

  1140. and before his angels.

  1141. Those who are faithful

  1142. until the end,

  1143. Christ will confess you

  1144. before his father.

  1145. You want the Lord

  1146. to confess your name.

1147. The problem the Bible presents

1148. isn't whether we are ashamed

  1149. to confess Christ.

  1150. No, it's not that.

1151. It's how God can not be ashamed

1152. to confess you and me.

1153. That is our greatest need.

  1154. Who will confess us

1155. before that great white throne?

  1156. Weak, vile, helpless,

  1157. soiling our garments,

  1158. contaminated by sin

  1159. and a righteous God.

1160. Who will confess our names

  1161. when we approach

  1162. that final throne

  1163. on that final day?

  1164. We need Jesus

  1165. to confess our name.

1166. The spotless lamb of God

  1167. to confess your name

  1168. and my name

  1169. before the father.

1170. Those who confess Christ now,

1171. those who live for his name,

  1172. Jesus will confess

  1173. before his father.

  1174. Church,

1175. this is what the text

1176. is saying to us this morning.

1177. You can settle for a name

  1178. in New Haven

  1179. or you can settle

1180. for a name in heaven.

1181. You must make the choice.

  1182. Jesus says,

1183. what would it profit a man

1184. to gain the whole world

  1185. and forfeit his soul?

  1186. Friend,

1187. what would it profit you

1188. to have your name written

  1189. on a membership list

  1190. at a church

  1191. but excluded

1192. in this book of life?

1193. What would it profit you

  1194. to have your name

  1195. and acknowledge

  1196. and applaud by others

1197. but Jesus does not confess

  1198. your name

  1199. before his father?

1200. What would it profit you

  1201. to be clothed

  1202. in rich clothes

  1203. and have nice cars

  1204. but you stand naked

  1205. and exposed before God

  1206. on that final day

  1207. of judgment

1208. where you are not given

  1209. a garment of white

  1210. but you will wear

  1211. eternal black garments

  1212. of judgment?

  1213. Friend,

  1214. run to the mercy

  1215. of the cross.

  1216. Run today

  1217. today and not tomorrow

  1218. for tomorrow

  1219. may be too late.

1220. And we see the fruit

  1221. of this rebuke

  1222. in church history.

  1223. The church at Sardis

  1224. eventually did make

  1225. a U-turn

  1226. and became known

  1227. for a bastion

  1228. of bold witness

  1229. for the gospel

  1230. where it remained

  1231. for another thousand years.

  1232. And to close,

  1233. there is a story

  1234. of a young woman

  1235. from a wealthy family

  1236. who came to faith

  1237. during a revival.

  1238. She was scolded

  1239. by her father

  1240. and ridiculed

  1241. by her mother

  1242. for confessing Jesus.

  1243. Eventually told

  1244. she must renounce

  1245. her fanaticism

  1246. or her name

  1247. would be blotted out

  1248. forfeiting her inheritance.

  1249. She was given

  1250. several days

  1251. to think it over.

  1252. On that final day

  1253. she was told

  1254. to give her answer.

  1255. She replied

  1256. by sitting down

  1257. at a piano

  1258. where she played

  1259. a verse

  1260. of a well-known hymn.

  1261. Jesus,

  1262. I my cross

  1263. have taken

  1264. all to leave

  1265. and follow thee.

  1266. Destitute,

  1267. despised,

  1268. forsaken,

  1269. thou from hence

  1270. my all shalt be.

  1271. Perish every fond ambition,

  1272. all I've sought

  1273. or hoped

  1274. or known.

  1275. Yet how rich

  1276. is my condition.

  1277. God and heaven

  1278. are still my own.

  1279. She chose a name

  1280. in heaven

  1281. rather than a name

  1282. in this world.

  1283. And you know what?

  1284. Jesus will confess

  1285. her name

  1286. before his father.

  1287. Will he confess yours?

  1288. Let's pray.

  1289. Oh,

  1290. Father in heaven,

1291. help us to wake up,

  1292. to wake up today

  1293. and not tomorrow.

  1294. Give us life

  1295. as a church.

  1296. Help us

  1297. not be content

  1298. with the form

  1299. and not the reality.

  1300. Oh God,

  1301. we pray your spirit

  1302. would bring a revival

  1303. to our church

  1304. where we feel like

  1305. brand new Christians again.

  1306. Father,

  1307. would you do this

  1308. for your honor

  1309. and praise

  1310. for your renown?

1311. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1312. Amen.

  1313. Amen.

  1314. Amen.

  1315. Amen.

  1316. Amen.

  1317. Amen.

  1318. Amen.

  1319. Amen.

  1320. Amen.

  1321. Amen.

  1322. Amen.

  1323. Amen.

  1324. Amen.

  1325. Amen.

  1326. Amen.

  1327. Amen.

  1328. Amen.

  1329. Amen.

  1330. Amen.

  1331. Amen.

  1332. Amen.

  1333. Amen.

  1334. Amen.

  1335. Amen.

  1336. Amen.

  1337. Amen.

  1338. Amen.
