  1. All right. Friends, today we continue our sermon series on the letters that we find written in the

  2. book of Revelation. And thus far in this series, we have encountered several letters dictated by

  3. Jesus to different churches, and most of these churches have been rebuked by Jesus. Most of

  4. these churches have struggled with sins like sexual immorality, moral complacency, lukewarm

  5. faith, false teaching, idolatry, and so on. And all of these sins have spoken warnings and rebukes to us

  6. and to our church here and now. But with the letter we are reading today, we have a different church.

  7. We have a church that Jesus does not rebuke. This church, it turns out, labored under oppression

  8. and under slander and gossip and rejection and weakness and loss of worldly identity and loss

  9. of family connections. Yet in all this, they remained faithful to Christ. What does Jesus

  10. have to say to this kind of church and this kind of Christian? As we will see, friends,

  11. he speaks much words of assurance and comfort, and he encourages them to embrace their identity

  12. in Christ and not their identity in this world. And he offers them many promises. Throughout the

  13. sermon series, we have read the letters in Revelation as if they were written to us. So this morning,

  14. let us hear the words in this letter as if Jesus spoke them to us. And what Jesus' letter says to you

  15. is to not be conformed to this world, but to embrace your identity in Christ, your citizenship

  16. in heaven, your membership in the body of Christ. And this is especially true for those of you who've

  17. been rejected by others because you follow Jesus. The letter to the church that we're going to read can

  18. be found in the book of Revelation. It's to the church in ancient Philadelphia. It's on page 966 in

  19. your pew Bible. This is Revelation chapter 3, verses 7 through 13. And that's again page 966.

    Revelation 3:7–13

  20. And this letter reads like this.

  21. And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia, write the words of the Holy One, the true one,

  22. who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens.

  23. I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door which no one is able to shut.

  24. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

  25. Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not but lie.

  26. Behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you.

  27. Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial

  28. that is coming on the whole world to try those who dwell on the earth.

  29. I am coming soon.

  30. Hold fast what you have so that no one may seize your crown.

  31. Friends, let's pray together.

  32. Let's pray together.

  33. Oh, Father, we submit ourselves to your word.

  34. We pray that we would be like this ancient church in Philadelphia,

  35. that we would stand fast in times of trial.

  36. Lord, I pray that you would help us to understand your word,

  37. your figures of speech, which sometimes are hard to understand.

  38. I pray that you would open our hearts to listen,

  39. that you would give us ears to what the Spirit says to the churches.

  40. Father, we submit to you in your will, and we pray all this in the mighty name of Jesus.

  41. Amen.

  42. Amen.

  43. The structure of the sermon this morning will go like this.

  44. First, we're going to look at how Jesus introduces himself in this letter to the Philadelphians.

  45. And then secondly, we'll examine a little bit about what kind of things the church in Philadelphia was suffering.

  46. And then most of our time will be spent meditating upon the promises and exhortations that Jesus gives to the church in ancient Philadelphia.

  47. And therefore, what promises and what exhortations that he gives to you regarding your identity in Christ?

  48. We begin in verse 7.

  49. There Jesus says,

  50. There Jesus says to the angel of the church in Philadelphia,

  51. Right, the words of the Holy One, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

  52. Jesus starts by declaring certain things about himself.

  53. He says that he is the holy one.

  54. He's the true one.

  55. He's sanctified.

  56. He's set apart.

  57. From Jesus, we derive our holiness.

  58. From him, we derive the truth.

  59. There is no lie found in Jesus.

  60. And this true one, this true one, this Jesus, he is the one writing to the church in Philadelphia.

  61. Now, all that is clear to most people in this verse, but the other things Jesus says about himself are a bit more confusing.

  62. What I wonder is the key of David that Jesus says he possesses.

  63. And what does opening and shutting have to do with Jesus and the Christian life?

  64. Revelation in this passage borrows from Isaiah the prophet, chapter 22, verse 22, where God says,

  65. And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David.

  66. He shall open and no one shall shut.

  67. He shall shut and no one shall open.

  68. The context of this passage in Isaiah shows that several hundred years before Revelation was written,

  69. God spoke through Isaiah about a new steward who would be appointed over the house of David in Isaiah's time

  70. and who would be given David's key so that he might manage all the affairs of the kingdom

  71. and have authority to permit and to prevent, to allow and to forbid all manner of activities and all manner of people.

  72. In the scriptures, the kingdom of David, of course, is the very kingdom of the Messiah.

  73. It's the kingdom that the Messiah would inherit and rule forever.

  74. It was that kingdom which the Messiah would elevate from just an earthly kingdom into a heavenly one.

  75. And if we put all these things together, we see that the key of David in Revelation symbolizes the power to manage the affairs of the Davidic kingdom.

  76. The Messiah's heavenly kingdom.

  77. And Revelation says that it is Jesus who possesses it.

  78. He is the one who has the authority to open and close privileges in this kingdom to others.

  79. So in the first verse, Jesus declares that he is holy.

  80. He is true.

  81. He is the steward over the messianic kingdom.

  82. And whomever he chooses, the privileges of this kingdom will be granted.

  83. Now, as we know what Jesus says to the church in Philadelphia,

  84. he in many ways says to us here at Trinity.

  85. What he says to the church in Philadelphia, he says to you specifically.

  86. So do not be mistaken then.

  87. When Jesus says that he has the key of David,

  88. and when he says that what he shuts no one may open,

  89. and what he opens no one may shut,

  90. do not be mistaken.

  91. For when he says these things, he's speaking not just to the ancient church, but to you.

  92. And there is one privilege in particular that Jesus has opened for you, O Christian.

  93. In the next verse, in verse 8, Jesus says this,

  94. I know your works.

  95. Behold, I have set before you an open door,

  96. which no one is able to shut.

  97. This verse tells us that Jesus knows your works.

  98. He knows your deeds.

  99. And behold, he uses his authority over the messianic heavenly kingdom

  100. to set before you an open door,

  101. which no one is able to shut.

  102. This door is nothing less than the entryway into this heavenly and eternal kingdom.

  103. Now, the translation we use here at Trinity

  104. says that Jesus sets before you an open door.

  105. But a translation that is perhaps a bit more faithful to the Greek,

  106. instead of reading an open door,

  107. it would read an opened door.

  108. That is a door that has been opened.

  109. A door that had once been shut,

  110. but now is open.

  111. You see, in this verse,

  112. Jesus communicates that that entry

  113. into the kingdom of God is impossible for us.

  114. That door was shut.

  115. We could not open it.

  116. But thanks be to God, we have a Savior,

  117. Christ the Lord, who's gone into the heavens

  118. and opened this door for you,

  119. his beloved.

  120. And no one can shut it.

  121. And so Jesus says,

  122. I've set before you an opened door,

  123. which no one is able to shut.

  124. Christians, this is a profound gospel truth.

  125. Those whom Christ has appointed to live in his heavenly kingdom

  126. cannot be cast out.

  127. The door has been opened.

  128. No one can shut it.

  129. Jesus proclaims this specifically in the Gospel of John.

  130. He says,

  131. I give them eternal life and they will never perish,

  132. and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

  133. So do not fear, Christian,

  134. when you are rejected in this world for Christ.

  135. The devil cannot touch you when you are with Jesus.

  136. Your enemies cannot harm you.

  137. Death and sin cannot reach you.

  138. They may roar.

  139. They may gnash their teeth.

  140. They may bear their claws.

  141. But you are safe with Jesus.

  142. The door to eternal life has been opened by Christ,

  143. and no one is able to shut it.

  144. And be especially assured of this truth.

  145. If you are weak today,

  146. or if you are lonely in this moment,

  147. if you are slandered at this time,

  148. or gossiped about because you follow Christ,

  149. if you have in any way lost your worldly identity,

  150. if you are struggling with who you are,

  151. if you are oppressed because of your love for Jesus,

  152. then as you will see,

  153. Jesus has you specifically in mind in this letter we are reading.

  154. Because if you are struggling with these things,

  155. if you're weak or slandered or rejected by others,

  156. if you have lost your identity on this earth because of Jesus,

  157. then you are much like the church in Philadelphia,

  158. because they too were suffering the same things.

  159. And Jesus goes on to comfort them and exhort them.

  160. So let us now turn to look a little bit

  161. at the kinds of things that the church in Philadelphia was suffering.

  162. We can glean these things by jumping around a little bit

  163. in verses 8, 9, and 10.

  164. We start in verse 8.

  165. Jesus says,

  166. I know that you have but little power,

  167. and yet you've kept my word and have not denied my name.

  168. In verse 8,

  169. Jesus says that he knows that the Christians of Philadelphia have little power.

  170. Therefore, it seems that the Christians in Philadelphia

  171. were weak by worldly standards.

  172. And verse 8 also goes on to say that even though they were weak,

  173. the Christians kept his word and did not deny his name.

  174. This implies to us that not only were the Philadelphian Christians weak,

  175. they also faced opposition.

  176. Yet in this they remained faithful,

  177. and they did not deny the name of Jesus.

  178. And jumping to verse 10,

  179. Jesus says something similar.

  180. He says,

  181. You have kept my word of patient endurance.

  182. So not only are the Christians in Philadelphia weak,

  183. not only have they faced oppression,

  184. this oppression seems to have gone on for some time

  185. because Jesus says they were patiently enduring.

  186. We do not know the specifics of what the church in Philadelphia was suffering,

  187. but we get a hint of it in verse 9.

  188. There Jesus says,

  189. He speaks of a synagogue of Satan

  190. who say that they are Jews but are not,

  191. and lie.

  192. This kind of oppression

  193. that the church in Philadelphia was experiencing

  194. seems to have at least in part involved

  195. being slandered by contemporary Jews who lived in their city.

  196. We saw this a few weeks ago

  197. in Jesus' letter to the church in Smyrna.

  198. To reconstruct what was going on,

  199. we have to read between the lines a little bit here

  200. and also draw from the historical context.

  201. But the best historical estimate

  202. is that in Philadelphia,

  203. there was a community of Jewish Christians,

  204. and they seem to have worshipped in the local synagogue.

  205. As mentioned in the sermon a few weeks ago,

  206. it was common for Christians in the early church

  207. to do this, to worship in the synagogues.

  208. We see Christians, even the apostles,

  209. doing this in the book of Acts.

  210. But evidently, the Jews in the synagogue of Philadelphia

  211. were criticizing Jewish Christians

  212. and saying that they could only be Jewish

  213. if they did not confess Jesus as the Messiah.

  214. Christians in Philadelphia

  215. were therefore suffering under slander,

  216. and they had probably been excommunicated

  217. from the synagogue.

  218. They were likely cut off from friends and family.

  219. This would have meant that they would have lost

  220. their ethnic, their religious, their cultural,

  221. even their national identity.

  222. And if we put all these things together,

  223. we learn a little bit,

  224. about what the church in Philadelphia was suffering.

  225. They were weak.

  226. They were oppressed.

  227. They were slandered.

  228. They were vulnerable.

  229. They were lonely.

  230. They were rudderless in a sea

  231. without a worldly home or worldly identity.

  232. But despite all of this,

  233. they kept the word of Jesus,

  234. and they did not deny his name,

  235. and they patiently persevered.

  236. So I ask you, friend,

  237. are you suffering these things?

  238. Are you weak?

  239. Are you downtrodden?

  240. Are you meek or weak or hurting

  241. or buffeted back and forth?

  242. Are you slandered or oppressed

  243. or weary or lonely?

  244. Have you been cut off from friends or family?

  245. Are there those in your workplace

  246. or in your school

  247. who gossip about you behind your back

  248. because you follow Jesus?

  249. Have you lost your identity in this world?

  250. And in all these things,

  251. are you keeping Jesus' word?

  252. Are you refusing to deny his name?

  253. The church in Philadelphia suffered like you.

  254. They had no strength.

  255. They were oppressed,

  256. it seems, by both Jews and Gentiles.

  257. They were slandered.

  258. In all probability,

  259. they were rejected by friends and family.

  260. Yet unlike some of the churches in Revelation,

  261. most of the churches in Revelation,

  262. they kept Jesus' word

  263. and they patiently persevered.

  264. Friends, it is no wonder

  265. that Jesus goes on in his letter

  266. to assure these Christians of their salvation

  267. and to comfort them

  268. and to promise them many things

  269. regarding that heavenly kingdom

  270. Jesus is preparing for them

  271. and for you

  272. and also to assure them

  273. about their new identity

  274. he is giving to them

  275. and to you as a Christian.

  276. So let's turn to these promises now.

  277. And before I start,

  278. I must say that these promises

  279. can be a little difficult to interpret,

  280. so we'll go through them one by one.

  281. First, in verse 9

  282. of his letter to the Philadelphians,

  283. Jesus refers to those

  284. who slandered and opposed

  285. the Christians of Philadelphia.

  286. He says,

  287. Behold,

  288. I will make them come

  289. and bow down before your feet

  290. and they will learn

  291. that I have loved you.

  292. What could this mean?

  293. It might sound

  294. as if these persecutors

  295. will be forced to worship Christians.

  296. It might sound that way in English,

  297. but in the original Greek,

  298. I think it's a bit more clear.

  299. These enemies are not

  300. worshiping Christians.

  301. Instead,

  302. they are worshiping God

  303. in front of the Christians

  304. that they persecuted.

  305. This touches upon Judgment Day

  306. when every tongue will confess

  307. and every knee will bow,

  308. when the nations

  309. will be gathered before Jesus,

  310. when all people will come

  311. and they'll come from the east

  312. and from the west

  313. and from the north

  314. and from the south

  315. and they'll cast their crowns

  316. before him.

  317. And we will all be together

  318. on that day,

  319. every one of us.

  320. And Scripture says

  321. that not only will every Christian

  322. be there,

  323. but every non-Christian,

  324. and not just every human being,

  325. but every being

  326. on heaven and on earth

  327. and under the earth.

  328. All creation,

  329. all the angels will be there,

  330. the demons will be there too,

  331. and we will all fall

  332. before the throne of Jesus.

  333. And Jesus gives

  334. specific comfort

  335. to those of you

  336. who have suffered under lies

  337. or been slandered

  338. or rejected

  339. for the sake of Christ.

  340. Jesus says

  341. that whoever has lied

  342. about you,

  343. whoever has done so

  344. on account of me,

  345. whoever has slandered you,

  346. whoever has rejected you

  347. because of me,

  348. on that day

  349. they will be made to learn

  350. that I have loved you.

  351. Friends,

  352. make no mistake,

  353. we are called

  354. to love our enemies.

  355. Scripture commands us

  356. to pray

  357. for those who persecute you.

  358. Bless those who curse you.

  359. Turn and offer your left cheek

  360. when struck on the right.

  361. Do good

  362. to those who do evil.

  363. Forgive

  364. those who have wronged you

  365. because vengeance is mine,

  366. says the Lord.

  367. I will repay.

  368. Scripture is also clear

  369. that the love of God

  370. has been poured out

  371. in your heart,

  372. not because of anything worthy

  373. that you have done,

  374. not because of your works,

  375. not because you've earned it

  376. as a wage

  377. that is due to you,

  378. but only

  379. and simply

  380. because God

  381. in His glory

  382. set His love upon you

  383. and rescued you

  384. from the domain of darkness.

  385. On account of this,

  386. you should not take passages

  387. as the one we have before us

  388. to lord it over those

  389. who made you suffer.

  390. Instead,

  391. take these passages

  392. to walk with humility.

  393. Take them as a comfort

  394. that when you suffer for Christ,

  395. when you are rejected by others,

  396. God will vindicate you.

  397. You don't need to worry

  398. about vengeance.

  399. You don't need to justify yourself

  400. before those who gossip

  401. or slander about you.

  402. You don't need to be anxious

  403. over whether you'll be found innocent.

  404. And do not believe

  405. any of those things they say.

  406. Christ is for you.

  407. Who can be against you?

  408. For Jesus has promised

  409. that all those

  410. who have rejected

  411. or mocked you

  412. will be made to know

  413. on that day

  414. that God has loved you

  415. when He comes

  416. to judge the earth.

  417. Well, friends,

  418. let us move on

  419. to a second promise

  420. I want to highlight.

  421. This is in verse 10

  422. where Jesus says,

  423. because you have kept

  424. the word of my patient endurance,

  425. I will keep you

  426. from the hour of trial

  427. that is coming

  428. on the whole world

  429. to try those

  430. who dwell on the earth.

  431. This verse has occasioned

  432. much controversy

  433. in theological circles.

  434. Many faithful Christians

  435. have taken this verse

  436. to mean that Jesus

  437. will spare Christians

  438. from the trials

  439. mentioned in the book

  440. of Revelation

  441. because this verse

  442. promises to rescue Christians

  443. from the great trial

  444. that is coming

  445. on the whole earth.

  446. Other faithful Christians

  447. disagree and point out

  448. that Revelation

  449. does seem to include

  450. Christians as suffering

  451. the trials that are to come.

  452. For instance,

  453. in Revelation 6.11

  454. seems to reference

  455. Christians being killed

  456. and you can see

  457. similar things

  458. in chapter 7.14

  459. or 12.11, 12.17

  460. and verses like that.

  461. Now, in this

  462. alternative perspective,

  463. what Jesus promises

  464. to spare the Philadelphians

  465. from is either

  466. the terrible woe

  467. in Revelation 9

  468. where only those

  469. who are sealed

  470. with God's name

  471. are spared.

  472. Or perhaps

  473. what he's talking about

  474. is the great trial

  475. of the lake of fire

  476. that is prepared

  477. for all those

  478. who reject Christ.

  479. We may touch

  480. on these things

  481. in a later sermon

  482. but whatever the case,

  483. remember friends

  484. that we must read

  485. Revelation with humility.

  486. There are mysteries

  487. in it that will not

  488. be made clear

  489. until they are fulfilled.

  490. Remember also

  491. that the finer points

  492. about the end times,

  493. these friends

  494. are secondary

  495. or even tertiary issues

  496. and we don't want

  497. to be divisive about them

  498. or focus on them

  499. over much.

  500. So regardless

  501. of your view

  502. on the end times,

  503. what we know

  504. is this.

  505. In this present life,

  506. Christ calls us

  507. to bear our crosses

  508. and he tells us

  509. that suffering

  510. will come to us

  511. whether or not

  512. it comes in the end times

  513. or not.

  514. And we also know

  515. that Christ promises

  516. to welcome us

  517. into his kingdom

  518. and to make all know

  519. that he has loved you.

  520. So take heart, friends.

  521. Jesus promises

  522. to spare you

  523. from the coming trial,

  524. whatever that may be.

  525. Friends,

  526. I could go on

  527. about this passage

  528. for some time

  529. but let's hasten on

  530. because Jesus

  531. has more promises

  532. for those of you

  533. who are faithful

  534. to Christ

  535. when suffering

  536. rejection by others.

  537. Verse 12 reads this.

  538. Jesus says,

  539. To the one who conquers,

  540. I will make him

  541. a pillar in the temple

  542. of my God.

  543. Never shall he go out of it.

  544. The phrase,

  545. To the one who conquers,

  546. this refers to those

  547. who continue to persevere

  548. in the faith.

  549. To these,

  550. God will make a pillar

  551. in the temple of God,

  552. the temple that's located

  553. in the coming

  554. heavenly kingdom.

  555. Never will they

  556. leave his presence.

  557. With this,

  558. Jesus, of course,

  559. doesn't mean that

  560. he's actually going

  561. to turn you

  562. into a pillar of stone.

  563. Instead,

  564. he's speaking figuratively

  565. or symbolically here.

  566. And to understand

  567. this promise,

  568. we must know

  569. that a pillar in Scripture

  570. signifies permanence,

  571. steadfastness,

  572. immovability,

  573. constancy.

  574. So by using

  575. symbolic language,

  576. Jesus communicates

  577. that you

  578. who have persevered

  579. in the faith

  580. in times of trial

  581. or in being rejected

  582. or in losing

  583. your worldly identity

  584. or your community.

  585. To you,

  586. Jesus says,

  587. you will be spared

  588. not only the coming trial,

  589. but you will also be

  590. in God's presence

  591. forever in his temple.

  592. You will no longer

  593. be rejected.

  594. You will be with him

  595. and more than that,

  596. you will be a necessary,

  597. a crucial aspect

  598. of the functioning

  599. of the temple of God.

  600. Just as a pillar

  601. crucially upholds

  602. a building,

  603. so you will not

  604. be worthless.

  605. You will be an integral part

  606. of the kingdom of God.

  607. Whatever your worth is now,

  608. you will not be worthless then.

  609. Christ will make you fit

  610. for valued service

  611. in his kingdom

  612. just as a pillar

  613. upholds a temple.

  614. And not only that,

  615. Jesus goes on to say

  616. in that same verse,

  617. and I will write on him

  618. the name of my God.

  619. Again, friends,

  620. this doesn't mean

  621. that we're going

  622. to literally walk around

  623. with the letters of God

  624. scribbled all over our face.

  625. Instead, again,

  626. this is an example

  627. of symbolic language.

  628. Inscribing God's name

  629. on you means

  630. that you are set apart

  631. for God.

  632. You belong to him.

  633. You are part

  634. of his household.

  635. You are cherished by him

  636. and protected by him.

  637. This is similar

  638. to Exodus 28,

    Exodus 28:36–38

  639. verse 36 through 38,

  640. where the phrase

  641. holy to the Lord

  642. is inscribed

  643. on the gold plate

  644. mounted on the high priest's forehead.

  645. To write God's name

  646. on the high priest

  647. was a marker

  648. claiming that the high priest

  649. was set apart

  650. specifically for God.

  651. It indicated

  652. that he belonged to God

  653. and was set apart

  654. for service to God

  655. in a special way.

  656. In the same way, Christian,

  657. you who have been faithful

  658. to Christ

  659. in times of trial,

  660. in times of being rejected

  661. or slandered,

  662. in times of suffering

  663. for Christ,

  664. you belong to God now.

  665. You have been purchased

  666. by him.

  667. You are in his household forever.

  668. You are safe with him,

  669. protected by his shield.

  670. You are under his banner

  671. and you have been purchased

  672. by his blood eternally.

  673. For this reason,

  674. the Apostle Paul says,

  675. you are not your own.

  676. You were bought

  677. with a price.

  678. And to indicate all of this,

  679. Jesus in Revelation

  680. symbolically promises

  681. to write the name of God

  682. upon you.

  683. But Jesus

  684. has more words of promise

  685. for you, Christian,

  686. who are persevering

  687. in trial

  688. and worldly rejection.

  689. He says he will not just

  690. write his name on you.

  691. He says in verse 12,

  692. I will also write

  693. the name of the city

  694. of my God,

  695. the new Jerusalem,

  696. which comes down

  697. from heaven,

  698. from my God.

  699. As we just saw,

  700. being called the name

  701. of someone

  702. meant that you belong

  703. to that person's household.

  704. But here you must know

  705. that in the ancient world,

  706. being called by the name

  707. of a city

  708. meant that you were

  709. a citizen of that city.

  710. So here when Jesus

  711. inscribes the name

  712. of the city of God,

  713. the new Jerusalem,

  714. which comes down

  715. from heaven,

  716. he is proclaiming

  717. in no uncertain terms

  718. that you are a citizen

  719. of that heavenly city

  720. forever.

  721. Your old identity

  722. has passed away.

  723. All these earthly cities,

  724. these earthly countries,

  725. earthly families,

  726. these are as nothing

  727. to that heavenly kingdom

  728. where you,

  729. Jesus says,

  730. have been elected

  731. a citizen by God himself,

  732. a city that will never

  733. pass away

  734. like those on this earth.

  735. Paul the Apostle

  736. writes of this

  737. to the Philippians.

  738. He says in chapter 3

  739. to his epistle,

  740. but our citizenship

  741. is in heaven

  742. and from it

  743. we await a Savior,

  744. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  745. who will transform

  746. our lowly body

  747. to be like his glorious body

  748. by the power

  749. that enables him

  750. even to subject

  751. all things to himself.

  752. Christian,

  753. if you are longing

  754. for citizenship

  755. in an earthly country,

  756. or if your identity

  757. has been taken from you,

  758. if you've been abandoned

  759. by family or friends

  760. or your community,

  761. do not be troubled

  762. by these things.

  763. God has reserved for you

  764. a better citizenship

  765. and a better family,

  766. a better community,

  767. one which can never

  768. be taken away,

  769. which will not be overthrown.

  770. He has gotten for you

  771. an irrevocable citizenship

  772. in heaven

  773. and a permanent,

  774. heavenly identity.

  775. And brothers and sisters,

  776. all of us here at Trinity,

  777. we are just

  778. a small,

  779. humble foretaste

  780. as sampling a token

  781. of that spiritual family

  782. that you've been given

  783. eternally and forever.

  784. But Jesus

  785. is not done yet.

  786. He says he will not only

  787. make you a pillar

  788. in this temple,

  789. he will not only inscribe

  790. the name of God on you

  791. in the name of the heavenly city,

  792. he also says

  793. that he will also inscribe

  794. my own new name.

  795. Again, this indicates

  796. that you now belong to Jesus

  797. just as you belong

  798. to God the Father.

  799. But notice here

  800. that Jesus,

  801. he doesn't say

  802. he's just going to write

  803. his name on you.

  804. He says he will write

  805. his new name on you.

  806. What is this new name?

  807. Jesus is called by many names

  808. in the scriptures.

  809. Of course,

  810. he's called Jesus,

  811. which means the Lord saves.

  812. Jesus is also called

  813. the wisdom of God,

  814. the word of God,

  815. the son of God.

  816. He's called Emmanuel,

  817. which means God with us.

  818. But none of these

  819. are new names for Jesus.

  820. They're old names.

  821. So Jesus can't be talking

  822. about those names.

  823. What then is this new name

  824. that Jesus promises

  825. to write on you?

  826. Friends,

  827. this is one of those places

  828. where scholars and theologians

  829. are not so sure.

  830. This name,

  831. our best guess,

  832. is this name probably

  833. refers to the new name

  834. of Jesus mentioned

  835. in Revelation chapter 19

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  836. in verse 12.

  837. There in that passage,

  838. the apostle John

  839. is given a vision

  840. of when Jesus returns

  841. in the end of days.

  842. He says,

  843. Then I saw heaven opened,

  844. and behold,

  845. a white horse,

  846. the one sitting on it

  847. is called Faithful and True,

  848. and in righteousness

  849. he judges and makes war.

  850. His eyes are like a flame of fire

  851. and on his head

  852. are many diadems,

  853. and he has a name written

  854. that no one knows

  855. but himself.

  856. He is clothed in a robe

  857. dipped in blood,

  858. and the name of which

  859. he is called

  860. is the Word of God.

  861. And the armies of heaven

  862. arrayed in fine linen,

  863. white and pure,

  864. were following him

  865. on white horses.

  866. Jesus, in this passage,

  867. is called the Word of God.

  868. His robe is dipped

  869. in his own blood

  870. which he shed for you

  871. to redeem you

  872. and to purchase you

  873. and to set you free.

  874. And he rides a white horse

  875. leading the armies of heaven

  876. on that day

  877. when he returns.

  878. But aside from being called

  879. the Word of God,

  880. there's also another name

  881. for Jesus in this passage,

  882. and this name

  883. is written on him,

  884. and no one knows this name

  885. but Jesus himself.

  886. It's plausible,

  887. even likely,

  888. that this is the new name

  889. we read about

  890. in Jesus' letter

  891. to the church

  892. in Philadelphia.

  893. This is the new name

  894. of Jesus

  895. which Jesus will write on you.

  896. It's the name

  897. by which you will be called

  898. on that last day

  899. when Jesus counts you

  900. as his own,

  901. as a member

  902. of his household forever,

  903. as a true child of God

  904. and as a citizen

  905. of his city,

  906. as a brother and sister

  907. a faithful servant

  908. and a friend.

  909. But whereas

  910. when the name of God

  911. the Father

  912. was written on you,

  913. it marked you

  914. as belonging

  915. to the Father's household,

  916. the new name of Jesus

  917. marks you

  918. not just as being

  919. part of that household

  920. but having

  921. the privilege

  922. of the inheritance

  923. as a firstborn son.

  924. for since Jesus

  925. is the only begotten

  926. of the Father,

  927. he inherits a kingdom

  928. and because he has

  929. set his name on you,

  930. you also will inherit

  931. that kingdom

  932. and reign with him.

  933. And more than this,

  934. just as we identify

  935. someone's family name,

  936. someone's family

  937. based on their last name,

  938. so also in heaven

  939. you will be given

  940. a name of Jesus

  941. as a kind of new last name.

  942. Think about this

  943. in your mind now.

  944. You have a first name,

  945. many of you

  946. have a middle name,

  947. you have a last name,

  948. however many names

  949. you have,

  950. they were given

  951. to you by someone

  952. and most of them

  953. indicate your membership

  954. in a family.

  955. And at the end of days

  956. at the resurrection,

  957. Jesus will add

  958. to your names

  959. a final and eternal name,

  960. his new name,

  961. and you will be called

  962. by that name forever.

  963. Your family will be

  964. that of God the Father

  965. and you will partake

  966. in the inheritance

  967. of Christ your brother

  968. and your old identity

  969. will have passed away,

  970. your new will have come.

  971. You belong to Jesus now.

  972. Friends, this letter

  973. has spoken many promises to us

  974. and the sum of them is this.

  975. Your identity

  976. is not in this world.

  977. It is not what people think of you.

  978. It is not in your earthly connections.

  979. It is not in your worldly citizenship.

  980. It is not in your family ties.

  981. It is not in your wealth,

  982. your career,

  983. your education.

  984. Instead, your identity

  985. is in Christ Jesus.

  986. In him, you have

  987. an eternal home,

  988. an eternal family,

  989. an eternal country

  990. in heaven with him,

  991. a forever citizenship.

  992. Be comforted in this,

  993. friends.

  994. Do not fear the rejection

  995. of this world

  996. or the slander of others

  997. because you follow Christ.

  998. Christ.

  999. Well, brothers and sisters,

1000. in view of these promises,

  1001. what word of advice

  1002. does Jesus have

  1003. for those of you

  1004. who are faithfully

  1005. persevering in this world?

1006. He speaks this in verse 11.

  1007. He says,

  1008. I am coming soon.

1009. Hold fast what you have

  1010. so that no one

  1011. may seize your crown.

  1012. Amen, friends.

1013. Let me conclude this sermon

  1014. with the same exhortation.

  1015. Hold fast, dear Christian.

  1016. Do not grow weary.

  1017. Jesus is coming soon.

1018. Hold fast to what you have.

  1019. Do not let anyone

  1020. seize your crown.

  1021. Pay no attention

1022. when people speak ill of you

  1023. because of Christ.

  1024. Don't be troubled

  1025. of these things.

  1026. Instead,

  1027. grow in joyfulness.

  1028. Grow in mercy.

  1029. Grow in long-suffering

  1030. and perseverance.

  1031. You're king.

  1032. He knows your sufferings.

  1033. And he comes

  1034. to judge the earth.

1035. And there lies in store

  1036. for you a citizenship

  1037. in heaven,

  1038. a membership

1039. in the eternal family of God

1040. which will never fade away.

  1041. brothers and sisters,

  1042. join me in prayer

1043. thanking God for these things.

  1044. Oh, Father in heaven,

1045. we thank you for these promises.

1046. We thank you that you,

1047. by the blood of your son Jesus,

  1048. have welcomed us

  1049. as your children,

  1050. adopted us

1051. as your sons and daughters,

1052. that you have helped us,

1053. you have given us that right

1054. due to nothing we have done

1055. to partake in the inheritance

  1056. of Christ.

  1057. Father, I pray

  1058. for anyone here

  1059. who is suffering

  1060. under rejection,

  1061. under slander,

  1062. or gossip,

  1063. for anyone

  1064. who has been separated

  1065. by family or friends

  1066. because they follow you.

  1067. Father, I pray

1068. you would give them courage,

1069. you would give them perseverance,

  1070. you would help them

  1071. to hold fast,

1072. to not lose their crown.

1073. Lord, for those of us

  1074. who are not suffering

  1075. these things,

1076. I pray you would help us

  1077. to encourage and exhort

  1078. and bear with others

  1079. who are,

  1080. to build them up

  1081. and lift them up.

1082. I pray we would learn

  1083. from them too, Lord,

1084. and learn from their wisdom

  1085. gotten by perseverance

  1086. in the faithful path

  1087. of obedience to Christ.

  1088. Christ.

  1089. Oh, Father,

  1090. we also pray

1091. that Jesus would come soon

  1092. and we lay ourselves

  1093. before him

1094. and it's in his mighty name

  1095. that we pray.

  1096. Amen.

  1097. Amen.
