  1. Good morning, and God bless you. I am delighted to have this opportunity to speak to you, but I'm also fearful of not so much standing for people and talking about Christ and this glorious Savior that we just sung about, but the fear that we might miss the power and the glory of his presence in our hearts and our lives.

  2. So I would ask for your prayers that as we share together that we might indeed be able to delight in his presence and to see his handiwork, not only in our own personal lives, but in the lives that all that will hear the word of God and be responsive to it.

  3. Today, I think, is an exceptional day in the life of our church in that the scripture text reveals, that we're going to read together, reveals a loving response to the longing hearts of his people.

  4. Specifically, the longing to be what God has created us to be, what we've all strove to be, and what we've all missed our mark in trying to be.

  5. This scripture is for everyone who feels that, who's missed the mark of the intent of the good and a righteous life.

  6. And I think it points us to a Savior that corrects and redefines and reshapes and remolds life for us.

  7. May I adapt a statement that I found from Isaac Dennison, who said this,

  8. He does not create, God does not create a longing or a hope without having a fulfilling reality ready for us.

  9. God doesn't bring us together here in this act of worship.

  10. He doesn't allow us to be inspired by music.

  11. He doesn't allow that seed within our lives that says, I want more or long more, without already having prepared that.

  12. And this is the joy of the passage that we're going to read and study.

  13. We will get to it.

  14. That in that it is God that has orchestrated this whole thing and that he comes to this historic divine moment to consummate all that he prophesied,

  15. all that we'd hoped for, all that we'd longed for.

  16. I hope that that would also happen here for all of us as we anticipate Christmas, as we anticipate his saving grace.

  17. You know, the real question is not so much, is he ready?

  18. But the question is, are you ready?

  19. We talk about and we rehearse, even in our prayer times, the things that burden us, the things that escape, that cause, distract us from the joy and the celebration of this moment.

  20. The hardships, the difficulties, the darkness in the world, the wars that we face, can all distract us from the reality of God's love and his grace for us.

  21. Matthew, why is the passage in Matthew 1, 18-25 so, so vitally important?

  22. I think Matthew, as we read it, will reveal the convergence, the convergence of God and humanity, which leads to the salvation of all who will embrace God's redeeming act of love.

  23. Now, that doesn't sound new to those of you who are Christian, but I think that you would agree that having God and man coming together in one human form is hard to wrap your mind around.

  24. And yet, that is what will be proclaimed today and what we will celebrate today and we will rehearse today in our own minds and our hearts.

  25. The past two weeks of Advent studies, we consider the genealogy that affirms the links to Christ's origins, his kingships, his efficacy and his ability to save.

  26. Even those who are outside the camp, even those who are outside the moral and social boundaries of established society,

  27. we're invited to come in and to celebrate and to rejoice in the God of the salvation that we celebrate today.

  28. Acts 1, 18-25 is this convergence of God and human that we call the incarnation.

  29. God dwelling with us, taking up residence with us.

  30. And as we believe that, as we affirm that, we must sense his dwelling with us in this moment, in this place, in our hearts.

  31. And it ought to excite us, it ought to thrill us to think that God would do business with us even today in the midst of this worship experience.

  32. God's purpose, then, is to reveal both what a healthy, whole, sinless life can look like

  33. and provide the sacrifice worthy of us, the atoning of our sins.

  34. God accomplishes what we're not able to do.

  35. God accomplishes what we're not able to do.

  36. Let's hear the word of God and not just talk about it.

  37. God, found in Matthew, the first chapter, the 18th verse, the 20, 18 through 25, found on page 757 in your pew Bible.

  38. Hear the word of God.

  39. This is how the birth of Christ, the Messiah, came about.

  40. His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph.

  41. Before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

  42. Because Joseph, her husband, was faithful to the law.

  43. And yet he did not want to expose her to public disgrace.

  44. He had in mind to divorce her quietly.

  45. But after he had considered this, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,

  46. Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife.

  47. Because what was conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

  48. She will give birth, give birth a son.

  49. And you are to give his name, give him the name Jesus.

  50. Because he will save his people from their sins.

  51. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet.

  52. The virgin will conceive and will give birth to a son.

  53. And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means God with us.

  54. When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him.

  55. And took Mary home as his wife.

  56. But he did not consummate their marriage until he gave birth, she gave birth to a son.

  57. And he gave him the name Jesus.

  58. Shall we pray?

  59. Holy Spirit, be our guide as we consider the truth your word has for us today.

  60. May our motives for knowing these truths from your word be pure and unadulterated.

  61. And in response to your willingness to unveil these glorious mysteries,

  62. may we be inspired to surrender our wills to yours.

  63. Regardless of what it cost us to submit.

  64. We ask these blessings because we know that your plan for our lives is not only providence,

  65. but it's the very essence of what it means to have a full and a meaningful life.

  66. Give us eyes to see, ears to hear.

  67. And passion to live what you teach us in this intimate moment of communion with you.

  68. For we are bound together by your Holy Spirit.

  69. And our hearts long to enjoy the embrace of your Holy Spirit.

  70. And to be safely held in your arms.

  71. May it be so.

  72. For we ask it in the name of our precious Lord, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

  73. Amen.

  74. Amen.

  75. Amen.

  76. I want us to consider.

  77. There are many ways we can look at the text this morning.

  78. We can spend our time focused upon the dream itself.

  79. Upon just telling the story verse by verse.

  80. but what I would like for us to do is to consider it in perhaps a unique way.

  81. First, let's acknowledge that this is really about the divine origin,

  82. the beginnings of Christ, the human Christ here on this earth,

  83. this transforming moment in human history where the Savior came to live,

  84. the Savior, God, came to live among us.

  85. And may we all affirm the greatest among them, among us,

  86. was the most humble in that he was willing to come

  87. and to humble himself to become a human being.

  88. I want us to find breathing space in our minds and our hearts and our souls

  89. as we study this and as we look at him.

  90. And divine breathing space to understand not just the technical details of this passage,

  91. but perhaps even more so the human aspect of it.

  92. For God came in human form.

  93. And I want us to appreciate the questions that that arises among us.

  94. The interesting thing, and what I want to do as we dissect the passage,

  95. is to look at the very purpose.

  96. Why would God come to earth?

  97. I mean, why would he bother?

  98. Why would he have to bother?

  99. Why not just create new human beings that would worship him,

  100. that would not fail,

  101. and that would just be submissive, unlike us?

  102. Well, we can speculate about that.

  103. But we do find an answer as to why he came to earth.

  104. It's a simple phrase out of verse 21.

  105. And it simply says,

  106. For he will save his people from their sins.

  107. Again, it's very hard to wrap our minds around this,

  108. but he's saying not just his people,

  109. the ones that sit here,

  110. most of you who sit here this morning,

  111. but he is saying the outsider as well, is he not?

  112. As we read and remember the whole of the passages that we've read in Matthew thus far,

  113. he has, who is his people?

  114. It is those he's created.

  115. And indeed, he has created us all by his loving act.

  116. Here in Matthew,

  117. Matthew is clarifying further the meaning of the genealogy

  118. and every aspect of Jesus' origin from the beginning

  119. to his sovereign hand.

  120. the sovereign hand of the Father

  121. in this story that superintends each aspect

  122. of the coming of Christ,

  123. this infant child,

  124. into the world.

  125. I want us,

  126. as God superintends our thoughts today,

  127. to attempt to move more deeply

  128. into our text

  129. and considering it this way,

  130. the cast of characters.

  131. that he has before us.

  132. And my hope is,

  133. is that you will want to see them

  134. not just as

  135. technical aspects

  136. of bringing Christ,

  137. the Emmanuel,

  138. God with us into the world,

  139. but I hope that you'll want to see them

  140. and personalize them

  141. as we look intimately and deeply

  142. into their lives,

  143. their roles,

  144. and in this new beginning.

  145. And I want to admit up front,

  146. I will neglect

  147. a couple of verses

  148. that certainly the prophetic verses

  149. that we read early,

  150. that we've read and studied earlier.

  151. I leave that to Tyler

  152. and your remembrance of what he's done there.

  153. And also,

  154. of the angels,

  155. there's a whole series of sermons

  156. I think that one could do

  157. on the role of angels

  158. in this whole Christmas story.

  159. So,

  160. having said that,

  161. what do I want us to do?

  162. How do I want us to help define

  163. and accomplish this moment

  164. to deeply see these characters?

  165. I recently listened to an interview

  166. with David Brooks,

  167. which is interesting about his new book,

  168. How to Know a Person.

  169. And I thought,

  170. this is really what I want us to employ,

  171. to use as a tool

  172. that we want to use

  173. to look deeply at this story.

  174. He simply said in an interview,

  175. there's one skill

  176. that lies in the heart

  177. of any healthy person

  178. family, school, community,

  179. organization, or society.

  180. The ability to see someone else deeply

  181. and to make them feel seen,

  182. to accurately know another person,

  183. to let them feel valued,

  184. heard, and understood.

  185. Now,

  186. he goes on to talk about it

  187. in this interview

  188. and illustrate this

  189. by referencing a series

  190. called The Chosen.

  191. Do you remember that?

  192. It's stories about Christ

  193. and the disciples.

  194. But he was indeed impressed

  195. by the role

  196. that the character of Jesus played.

  197. And I think it defines

  198. this moment for us

  199. because he talked about,

  200. you know,

  201. in the midst of the crisis

  202. that Christ was born

  203. into this world,

  204. in the midst of all

  205. the Roman oppression,

  206. of all the things

  207. that were taking place

  208. around them.

  209. He was able to,

  210. and all the difficulties

  211. of seeing people,

  212. he chooses both his enemies,

  213. Christ,

  214. and those in desperate need

  215. and his would-be disciples

  216. to see them beyond

  217. what they're talking about,

  218. such as,

  219. I immediately thought

  220. of Zacchaeus

  221. or the woman at the well

  222. or Nicodemus,

  223. all of whom

  224. in which Christ

  225. in this,

  226. his story,

  227. the narrative,

  228. I'm sure that you've read it,

  229. many of you,

  230. but he looks beyond

  231. the situation

  232. like the woman at the well

  233. and he says,

  234. look,

  235. it really is not

  236. a matter about

  237. where we worship

  238. that you want to argue about,

  239. meeting you haphazardly.

  240. The real issue

  241. is your heart

  242. and the fact

  243. that you're dissatisfied

  244. and the fact

  245. that you've lived

  246. with several men

  247. and you're still

  248. not at peace

  249. in your heart

  250. and your soul.

  251. Christ is able to do that.

  252. So I want us

  253. in this narrative

  254. and in this story

  255. to look deeply,

  256. to look deeply

  257. at the Father,

  258. the Son,

  259. the Holy Spirit,

  260. Joseph and Mary

  261. and to know them,

  262. to try to know them

  263. and to understand them

  264. because in understanding them,

  265. we understand ourselves.

  266. We understand the questions

  267. that really are being asked

  268. perhaps

  269. that would lead us,

  270. our own desires,

  271. our own longings

  272. to be fulfilled

  273. through being responsive,

  274. through being loving

  275. and as they are to us.

  276. Let's hear the story

  277. and see if this makes sense.

  278. I know I'm kind of struggling here,

  279. so you have to,

  280. you know,

  281. I'm used to preaching

  282. in African American churches,

  283. so you have to shout out

  284. or, you know,

  285. fix it.

  286. Fix it means that,

  287. you know,

  288. you're not doing well,

  289. you need to step it up.

  290. Or, you know,

  291. just words of encouragement.

  292. So you can just say amen

  293. anytime you want.

  294. But I don't know if it'll help,

  295. but we'll try.

  296. Let's consider, though.

  297. And I want you to look at

  298. God the Father,

  299. first of all.

  300. And this whole story

  301. fascinates me.

  302. You have your Bibles open, right?

  303. Because this,

  304. each of these segments,

  305. each of these personalities

  306. are really one of the key words

  307. that appears is origins

  308. or new beginnings.

  309. And we find,

  310. and I think Matthew rehearsed this

  311. a few weeks ago,

  312. about in chapter 1, verse 1,

  313. you find the word origins or birth.

  314. Birth is not really the best word

  315. in either of the texts,

  316. but in 1.1 you have origins.

  317. Origins in 1.18,

  318. as he talks about,

  319. let's talk about

  320. the beginnings of Christ.

  321. It's a new beginning.

  322. And what we see

  323. is the parallel

  324. that they paint for us

  325. as they not only do the genealogy,

  326. but as you look back

  327. at Genesis 1.1,

  328. it says,

  329. in the beginning,

  330. it was God

  331. that began to create.

  332. Amen?

  333. Amen?

  334. So,

  335. and here's the great thing

  336. that we need to wrap our heads around

  337. if we're going to continue

  338. in this kind of intimate relationship

  339. with the Holy Spirit

  340. at this moment,

  341. that we understand

  342. that the Ruach,

  343. that the Spirit of God

  344. breathes life

  345. into this new beginning.

  346. The Father is there

  347. creating,

  348. organizing.

  349. And why does he do all this?

  350. Why do we get all these details?

  351. Is it really to,

  352. to simply to have a justification

  353. of who created what?

  354. His purpose

  355. was in order

  356. that he might have fellowship.

  357. That he might have

  358. an intimate relationship

  359. with human beings.

  360. About,

  361. with human beings

  362. that have been given a choice

  363. to love them

  364. or not love them.

  365. And who often fail

  366. to love them.

  367. The whole of the Old Testament

  368. as we rehearse it

  369. is about what?

  370. It's about God

  371. reaching out

  372. to human beings.

  373. His created.

  374. The ones

  375. that he loves.

  376. The ones

  377. that he goes about

  378. trying to redeem,

  379. to buy back,

  380. and,

  381. and to,

  382. and to bring

  383. into his loving arms.

  384. the question is,

  385. the question is,

  386. considering a God

  387. like this,

  388. is,

  389. what do you consider

  390. your origins?

  391. Do you believe

  392. that a God

  393. created you?

  394. Can,

  395. is it within

  396. your ability

  397. to comprehend

  398. and appreciate

  399. a God

  400. who created you?

  401. And if he did,

  402. he created you

  403. for a purpose.

  404. He has a plan

  405. for your life.

  406. And for me,

  407. in the darkness of night,

  408. in the difficulties

  409. of life,

  410. it's,

  411. it's good to know

  412. that somebody's

  413. got a plan

  414. and that somebody

  415. does care about me

  416. and that somebody

  417. does love me

  418. and somebody

  419. is not just somebody,

  420. it's the very one

  421. who created me

  422. and loved me.

  423. I,

  424. I love not only,

  425. and of course,

  426. it is somewhat

  427. in sequence

  428. as we go down

  429. through this story

  430. of 18 through 25,

  431. but you find also

  432. just an allusion

  433. to Mary.

  434. Mary really is,

  435. Matthew and Luke

  436. have two separate agendas.

  437. Luke is trying

  438. to tell more

  439. of the story.

  440. Matthew is really,

  441. as we've heard,

  442. reaching to Jewish people,

  443. looking for that connection

  444. in Jewish heritage,

  445. focuses mainly on that.

  446. But I want you to see

  447. this young girl.

  448. Again,

  449. I'm not sure

  450. we need to rehearse

  451. all the,

  452. the,

  453. the backstory.

  454. We know,

  455. you've heard

  456. about the engagements

  457. and,

  458. and how in Judaism

  459. they were legally bound

  460. during that one year,

  461. typically,

  462. of engagement.

  463. So,

  464. we don't need to,

  465. to invest much time there.

  466. we also know,

  467. we'll rehearse

  468. because it is important

  469. to the story

  470. that,

  471. Mary,

  472. this young teenager,

  473. was,

  474. was,

  475. was,

  476. was,

  477. 13 years old.

  478. and God

  479. comes to her

  480. and says,

  481. you're the one

  482. that's going to bear

  483. a child

  484. for me.

  485. It's interesting

  486. because it's hard

  487. to wrap your,

  488. your head

  489. around this

  490. and particularly

  491. the,

  492. the ideal of,

  493. and where Matthew's

  494. going here

  495. is,

  496. is the ideal

  497. of the virgin birth.

  498. I think

  499. it's no longer

  500. a leap of faith

  501. for us

  502. or understanding

  503. to,

  504. to appreciate

  505. artificial insemination.

  506. Most of you

  507. medical doctors here

  508. know about the process.

  509. It's a very likely

  510. possible thing

  511. to happen.

  512. The miracle is,

  513. again,

  514. back to incarnation,

  515. isn't it?

  516. The fact that it was

  517. the Holy Spirit

  518. that planted the seed

  519. within the egg

  520. of Mary

  521. and that

  522. in the midst

  523. of this,

  524. both God

  525. and man

  526. met.

  527. and embodied

  528. in human form.

  529. Wow.

  530. Well,

  531. as we think about that,

  532. I want you to

  533. rehearse

  534. some of the things

  535. that Tyler

  536. and Pastor Matthew

  537. has already

  538. helped us with

  539. and to bring

  540. into balance

  541. the extremes

  542. of now

  543. understanding

  544. this young woman

  545. and who she was

  546. and there's

  547. the extremes

  548. of

  549. beautification

  550. in these verses

  551. and there are others

  552. that,

  553. as Baptists

  554. and as Evangelicals,

  555. we often spend

  556. a great deal

  557. of time

  558. discarding

  559. or debunking

  560. Mary

  561. and making her

  562. beyond average

  563. as a mother.

  564. I like what,

  565. there's a term

  566. that I've adapted

  567. for this

  568. from Frederick

  569. Birchner

  570. and he says

  571. that Mary,

  572. and I say,

  573. Mary deserves,

  574. and he says,

  575. a just

  576. and loving

  577. attention.

  578. As we talk

  579. about the

  580. convergence

  581. of God

  582. and man

  583. in this

  584. girl's womb,

  585. I think we

  586. indeed

  587. must acknowledge

  588. that she

  589. does deserve

  590. a just

  591. and loving,

  592. our just

  593. and loving

  594. attention.

  595. Her nobility,

  596. I think,

  597. is derived

  598. not so much

  599. for the birth

  600. itself,

  601. which is

  602. profound,

  603. I think,

  604. and obviously

  605. a miracle.

  606. But to me,

  607. as I look

  608. deeply

  609. into the

  610. struggles

  611. of who

  612. she was

  613. and why

  614. God would

  615. ask her

  616. to do

  617. such a thing,

  618. I see

  619. beyond having

  620. grappled

  621. with that,

  622. her obedience

  623. and then

  624. her willing

  625. to be

  626. a mother.

  627. and to

  628. love

  629. and to

  630. nurture

  631. not only

  632. an infant

  633. child,

  634. but a

  635. teenager

  636. and a

  637. young adult

  638. to be

  639. the mother

  640. till he

  641. died on

  642. the cross

  643. of God,

  644. our Lord,

  645. and our

  646. Savior.

  647. God

  648. is

  649. to

  650. Mary

  651. shares

  652. in this

  653. process

  654. the struggle

  655. that you

  656. and I

  657. often have.

  658. You know,

  659. I want to

  660. preach Luke,

  661. but we

  662. can't.

  663. You look

  664. back at

  665. 114 and

  666. the angel

  667. explains this

  668. thing to

  669. her and

  670. he says,

  671. what?

  672. You want

  673. me to

  674. be the

  675. mother of

  676. God?

  677. Now,

  678. it's hard

  679. for me to

  680. wrap around.

  681. I have

  682. not only

  683. two

  684. daughters,

  685. but I

  686. have

  687. three

  688. granddaughters

  689. and one

  690. that's

  691. 14.

  692. And I

  693. can imagine

  694. her coming

  695. to me

  696. and saying,

  697. oh,

  698. by the

  699. way,

  700. I'm

  701. pregnant.

  702. And God

  703. did it.

  704. You know,

  705. that would

  706. be tough.

  707. And I

  708. say that

  709. not just

  710. to be

  711. humorous,

  712. but to

  713. say,

  714. to be

  715. human,

  716. that we

  717. sometimes

  718. so glorify

  719. these

  720. passages

  721. of

  722. scriptures

  723. that we

  724. distance

  725. ourselves

  726. from the

  727. fact that

  728. this was

  729. a young

  730. girl struggling

  731. with what

  732. it means

  733. to be

  734. the mother

  735. of God.

  736. And the

  737. daunting

  738. responsibility

  739. of having

  740. to nurture

  741. and strengthen

  742. and care

  743. for that

  744. child until

  745. God the

  746. Father takes

  747. him to

  748. be in

  749. active duty

  750. in full-time

  751. ministry the

  752. whole time.

  753. the key

  754. to this

  755. whole struggle

  756. is one

  757. thing.

  758. It is a

  759. common thread

  760. that applies

  761. to both

  762. Joseph and

  763. Mary,

  764. and if you

  765. go back to

  766. Zechariah and

  767. Elizabeth and

  768. to others in

  769. these stories.

  770. It again

  771. comes to us

  772. from scripture,

  773. Luke 138.

  774. It says,

  775. she turns

  776. to the

  777. angel and

  778. she says,

  779. behold,

  780. I am a

  781. servant of

  782. the Lord.

  783. Let it be

  784. to me

  785. according to

  786. your word.

  787. Now I want

  788. you to,

  789. if you are

  790. considering

  791. becoming a

  792. Christian,

  793. I want you

  794. to know that

  795. you don't

  796. have to have

  797. your act

  798. together,

  799. that you

  800. don't have

  801. to have

  802. all the

  803. theological

  804. principles

  805. and details

  806. even of

  807. this event

  808. or moment

  809. in perfect

  810. justification

  811. to provide

  812. you salvation,

  813. but it is

  814. a struggle.

  815. It is one

  816. that ultimately

  817. you come to

  818. the point

  819. of saying,

  820. having weighed

  821. in the

  822. balances

  823. what this

  824. is all

  825. about,

  826. you have

  827. to say

  828. like Mary

  829. and like

  830. Joseph,

  831. look,

  832. I believe

  833. that I need

  834. something,

  835. I believe

  836. and believe

  837. the Holy Spirit

  838. is convicting

  839. me of it

  840. and I'm

  841. going to

  842. follow you

  843. wherever you

  844. take me.

  845. well,

  846. let's be

  847. quick because

  848. I don't

  849. want to

  850. lose you.

  851. I want

  852. us to

  853. consider

  854. Joseph

  855. for just

  856. a moment

  857. and reflect

  858. on him.

  859. For when

  860. Joseph

  861. discovered

  862. Mary was

  863. pregnant,

  864. he reacted

  865. in the

  866. framework

  867. of the

  868. religion

  869. in which,

  870. the Jewish

  871. religion,

  872. his teachings,

  873. his culture

  874. and I think

  875. that they

  876. were very

  877. emotionally

  878. and spiritually

  879. bound by

  880. this

  881. engagement

  882. period.

  883. I think

  884. that he

  885. loved her

  886. and retribution

  887. wasn't an

  888. option for

  889. Mary and his

  890. heart and his

  891. mind.

  892. He was

  893. wrestling with

  894. this before

  895. the angel

  896. came to

  897. reveal what

  898. he was,

  899. his intent.

  900. and I want

  901. you to see

  902. it wasn't

  903. an easy

  904. decision.

  905. Basically,

  906. he was

  907. trying to,

  908. according to

  909. Deuteronomy

  910. 24.1,

  911. to put her

  912. away privately,

  913. divorce her

  914. privately,

  915. so that she

  916. would not

  917. be embarrassed.

  918. She would be

  919. embarrassed,

  920. but humiliated.

  921. But the

  922. important thing,

  923. I think,

  924. of the

  925. rehearsal of

  926. that story

  927. is the

  928. sight,

  929. the insight,

  930. into the

  931. character of

  932. Joseph.

  933. Joseph was

  934. just going to

  935. be the

  936. stepdad,

  937. but he was

  938. in and

  939. committed,

  940. even with

  941. Mary.

  942. He was a

  943. man that

  944. was just

  945. wanting to do

  946. the right

  947. thing,

  948. live a

  949. right life.

  950. He was a

  951. righteous

  952. person,

  953. but he was

  954. also merciful

  955. and he was

  956. always also

  957. loving.

  958. He was also

  959. submissive to

  960. the Lord

  961. God.

  962. So what does

  963. he do?

  964. Obedience,

  965. right?

  966. He says in

  967. these final,

  968. he doesn't

  969. say it,

  970. he gets up

  971. and does it.

  972. He says,

  973. all right,

  974. I'm going to

  975. take Mary to

  976. be my wife,

  977. I'm going to

  978. keep her,

  979. bring her

  980. into my

  981. home,

  982. and we're

  983. going to

  984. face the

  985. community and

  986. the world

  987. around us

  988. and all the

  989. questions that

  990. arise as a

  991. result of that.

  992. What a

  993. wonderful

  994. testimony,

  995. isn't it,

  996. to the

  997. community.

  998. Oh, it's

  999. God that is

  1000. active in the

  1001. world and the

  1002. Messiah is

  1003. coming through

  1004. her and

  1005. through the

  1006. baby that's

  1007. in her and

  1008. we're sharing

  1009. this road

  1010. together.

  1011. But they

  1012. struggle

  1013. together.

  1014. He too

  1015. becomes the

  1016. parent that

  1017. molds and

  1018. chafes the

  1019. carpenter's

  1020. son who

  1021. saves the

  1022. world.

  1023. Obedience

  1024. was the

  1025. key,

  1026. wasn't it?

  1027. As I

  1028. said before,

  1029. as with

  1030. Zechariah and

  1031. with Mary.

  1032. Mary.

  1033. There's one

  1034. other aspect

  1035. of this

  1036. that I

  1037. want you to

  1038. see.

  1039. That in the

  1040. midst of this

  1041. whole struggle

  1042. that Joseph

  1043. has, what

  1044. happens?

  1045. As with

  1046. Mary, the

  1047. angel comes,

  1048. gives

  1049. instruction,

  1050. and of

  1051. course with

  1052. Mary,

  1053. Elizabeth,

  1054. the older

  1055. cousin that

  1056. is pregnant,

  1057. also by an

  1058. act of God,

  1059. affirms,

  1060. encourages her,

  1061. strengthens her

  1062. in this

  1063. journey.

  1064. All of them

  1065. say yes and

  1066. are obedient,

  1067. but the

  1068. important thing

  1069. is that the

  1070. God that was

  1071. a God of

  1072. origins, the

  1073. God that

  1074. started in

  1075. 1-1 and

  1076. verse 18,

  1077. is the

  1078. same God

  1079. that guides

  1080. them, that

  1081. in his

  1082. hand, his

  1083. hand reaches

  1084. out to

  1085. them, helps

  1086. them to

  1087. understand, and

  1088. leads them to

  1089. the kingdom.

  1090. Jeremiah put

  1091. it this way,

  1092. you will seek

  1093. me and you'll

  1094. find me when

  1095. you search for

  1096. me with all

  1097. of your heart.

  1098. A part of

  1099. this whole

  1100. process of the

  1101. redemption

  1102. process, of

  1103. the roles

  1104. that they

  1105. play, the

  1106. reasons for

  1107. success, always

  1108. comes when we

  1109. are responsive to

  1110. the work of the

  1111. Holy Spirit in

  1112. our lives.

  1113. Well, let me

  1114. go quickly to

  1115. Jesus.

  1116. Because while we

  1117. could look at

  1118. the whole of

  1119. the New Testament,

  1120. we've covered the

  1121. Old Testament

  1122. through Tyler and

  1123. Matthew, I

  1124. want to rehearse

  1125. for you what

  1126. Matthew has

  1127. not done for

  1128. us.

  1129. Matthew does

  1130. not attempt to

  1131. explain how

  1132. Jesus Christ

  1133. could be both

  1134. man and God.

  1135. He simply

  1136. doesn't do it.

  1137. But what he

  1138. does do is

  1139. that he affirms

  1140. it.

  1141. And he

  1142. simply says

  1143. that of

  1144. him, of

  1145. Christ, in

  1146. verse 16, that

  1147. he was born of

  1148. Mary.

  1149. And in

  1150. verse 20, he

  1151. says, and he

  1152. was conceived

  1153. of the Holy

  1154. Spirit.

  1155. That should be

  1156. enough, shouldn't

  1157. it?

  1158. But it's

  1159. hard, again,

  1160. for us to

  1161. wrap our heads

  1162. around it.

  1163. We explain it in

  1164. many different

  1165. ways as we ask

  1166. these questions.

  1167. you know, the

  1168. second century

  1169. had Christians

  1170. and those who

  1171. studied scripture,

  1172. they came up

  1173. with a doctrine

  1174. that was called

  1175. Daucesanism.

  1176. And I didn't

  1177. pronounce that

  1178. correctly, did I

  1179. guys?

  1180. But anyway, it

  1181. was a sectarian

  1182. doctrine.

  1183. And that Christ

  1184. did not really

  1185. actually become

  1186. real.

  1187. That he didn't

  1188. really have a

  1189. natural body on

  1190. earth and that

  1191. apparently was

  1192. some type of a

  1193. phantom.

  1194. The doctrine

  1195. reached its

  1196. zenith in the

  1197. next generation

  1198. with agnostics.

  1199. And some

  1200. forms of it, I

  1201. think, are even

  1202. evident in our

  1203. society, in our

  1204. lives today.

  1205. But the idea

  1206. was that it

  1207. even denies the

  1208. fact that Christ

  1209. died.

  1210. So it was

  1211. easier to say,

  1212. all right, he's

  1213. all God.

  1214. Most of us

  1215. would fall

  1216. into perhaps

  1217. the opposite

  1218. extreme in our

  1219. society today.

  1220. I think in our

  1221. skeptical world,

  1222. we have detractors

  1223. about Christ

  1224. and it's not

  1225. his humanity,

  1226. but his divinity.

  1227. Most of us can

  1228. wrap our minds

  1229. and hearts around

  1230. the good and the

  1231. wise and religious

  1232. man or a prophet

  1233. that struggled

  1234. with his, and

  1235. yet we struggle

  1236. with his deity.

  1237. It's not being

  1238. like God, but

  1239. it's being God

  1240. himself that we

  1241. struggle with and

  1242. that we have a

  1243. difficult time with.

  1244. There's a quote

  1245. I want to share

  1246. with you,

  1247. Helmut Thickel,

  1248. that simply said,

  1249. certainly there are

  1250. great and profound

  1251. teachings in the

  1252. world, but one

  1253. must have the

  1254. capacity to

  1255. understand them

  1256. and one must,

  1257. in a situation

  1258. which affords the

  1259. reason adequate

  1260. for breathing space

  1261. so you can begin

  1262. to process it.

  1263. The greatness

  1264. of the gospel,

  1265. the greatness

  1266. of the gospel

  1267. that we have

  1268. presented to us

  1269. today, is in the

  1270. fact that it is

  1271. available to all,

  1272. not only to the

  1273. spiritual mature

  1274. or great, such

  1275. as Kant, but

  1276. also to the

  1277. weak.

  1278. Pascal was the

  1279. sublimest intellectual

  1280. of the world

  1281. thought, confined,

  1282. but so can a

  1283. little girl who

  1284. prays at night

  1285. before she goes

  1286. to bed.

  1287. Christ dealt

  1288. with this in his

  1289. own day.

  1290. In Matthew 16,

  1291. you remember the

  1292. story of his

  1293. followers and

  1294. his asking the

  1295. question, you

  1296. see, so is he

  1297. all God or is

  1298. he all man?

  1299. What's going on

  1300. in your mind?

  1301. So what?

  1302. What if he's God

  1303. and man or

  1304. whatever?

  1305. The question, I

  1306. think, that comes

  1307. to us is the

  1308. one that Christ

  1309. asked his

  1310. disciples.

  1311. As they were

  1312. traveling about,

  1313. as it became

  1314. popular, he

  1315. turns to the

  1316. disciples and he

  1317. says, he simply

  1318. asked the question,

  1319. whom do you

  1320. say?

  1321. Whom do they

  1322. say that I am?

  1323. Who are the

  1324. people that are

  1325. following me around?

  1326. What are they

  1327. saying about me?

  1328. What do they

  1329. believe?

  1330. And he goes

  1331. off and they

  1332. respond by saying,

  1333. well, some of you

  1334. believe that you're

  1335. John the Baptist.

  1336. Some others,

  1337. Elijah and others,

  1338. Jeremiah and some

  1339. of the prophets.

  1340. So what he's in

  1341. essence saying is

  1342. what many people

  1343. believe today.

  1344. Well, in Islam,

  1345. right?

  1346. That Christ was a

  1347. good man, that he

  1348. did a lot of

  1349. wonderful things,

  1350. that his teachings

  1351. were good.

  1352. We can embrace

  1353. that.

  1354. We can wrap our

  1355. heads around that.

  1356. But that's really

  1357. not where he wants

  1358. us to go.

  1359. Nor does he just

  1360. simply want us to

1361. think of him as a

  1362. God that never got

  1363. here, that never

  1364. died, that was all

  1365. phantom, all fake,

  1366. and therefore there's

  1367. no pain or suffering,

  1368. there was no death

  1369. associated with that.

1370. Nor does he want us

1371. to think of him as

  1372. simply a good man.

  1373. It's all or nothing.

1374. So he turns to his

  1375. disciples after this

  1376. discourse, and he

1377. says, but who do you

  1378. say that I am?

  1379. You see, the most

  1380. pressing question of

  1381. this whole sermon this

1382. morning for all of you

  1383. who are listening, it

  1384. doesn't matter what

  1385. everyone else says.

  1386. The theologians, those

  1387. that argue and debate,

  1388. the nuances of this

  1389. scripture, the question

1390. as God comes to dwell

1391. with us and in your

  1392. midst this morning is

1393. who do you say that I

  1394. am?

1395. We have an answer for

  1396. you.

1397. At least Peter had a

  1398. good answer that was

  1399. acceptable to Jesus.

1400. And he says, you're the

1401. Messiah, the Son of God.

  1402. But even that is

  1403. important, but even more

  1404. important is what the

1405. Father says back to the

  1406. disciple.

  1407. He simply says this,

  1408. Simon, son of Jonah,

  1409. you're blessed.

  1410. You are blessed.

  1411. Because you get this

  1412. story.

1413. You get the story of the

  1414. nativity scene.

1415. You get the story of what

1416. it means for God to come

1417. and to dwell in our midst,

1418. to love us, to care for

1419. us, to be with us, and to

1420. provide for us a way of

  1421. salvation.

  1422. Simon, you get it.

  1423. You're blessed because

1424. flesh and blood did not

  1425. reveal it to you.

1426. But my Father in heaven.

  1427. Now, I wish I were

  1428. eloquent enough and

  1429. profound enough to

  1430. convince you mentally

  1431. and emotionally of the

  1432. fact that God is

  1433. Jesus.

1434. And that Jesus in his

  1435. human form came and

1436. bled and died in order

1437. that he might provide for

  1438. you the salvation that

1439. you cannot earn, that you

  1440. cannot accomplish in and

1441. of and on your own.

1442. But I find at least

  1443. comfort in knowing that

  1444. in my inadequacies, the

1445. power of the Holy Spirit

  1446. that overshadowed the

1447. world as it was created,

  1448. that overshadowed Mary and

1449. created God, man, with us,

1450. the one that now overshadows

1451. us and offers you the

  1452. opportunity to come and

1453. to embrace this Messiah, the

  1454. Savior.

  1455. The other participant, I

  1456. hope, in this whole

  1457. narrative is you.

1458. For he did say in verse 21,

1459. my purpose for being here is

  1460. you.

1461. To provide salvation for you.

  1462. 2 Corinthians 5, the 5th

  1463. chapter, 17th verse says,

1464. Therefore, if anyone is in

  1465. Christ, he's a new

  1466. creation.

  1467. He's a new beginning.

1468. He or she has a new

  1469. origin.

1470. And the old has passed away

1471. and the new has come.

1472. As Joseph and Mary and even

1473. Jesus find their beginnings in

1474. God the Father and the Holy

1475. Spirit, so through our own

  1476. response to the overshadowing

1477. Holy Spirit, we reframe our

1478. mundane, empty lives and we

  1479. create, and he creates

1480. something that is holy and

1481. sacred and set apart for

  1482. eternity.

  1483. Can I compare notes for a

  1484. moment?

1485. The one last step and perhaps

1486. I've taken too long to get

  1487. here.

1488. But I want you to think with

1489. me of the new beginning that

  1490. Christ offers you.

1491. It's interesting that he moves

1492. from this origin story now and

1493. you find in the third chapter of

  1494. John another origin story.

1495. As Christ expands, and here's

  1496. what Christ does always.

1497. He takes us beyond the

1498. boundaries of our own thought,

1499. our own ability to comprehend,

1500. and he takes us one step

  1501. further.

  1502. So here's a guy in chapter

1503. three, Nicodemus, that is a

  1504. great student.

1505. And yet he comes with

  1506. questions and Christ provides

  1507. the answer.

1508. Let me just read it to you

  1509. quickly.

1510. Now there was a man of the

  1511. Pharisees named Nicodemus, a

  1512. ruler of the Jews.

1513. This man came to Jesus by night

1514. and said to him, Rabbi, we know

1515. that you are a teacher come from

1516. God, for no one can do the signs

1517. that you do unless God is with

  1518. him.

  1519. Do you hear that?

  1520. All right, you're a human being,

  1521. you're a great man, you're another

1522. prophet, you're all those good

  1523. things.

1524. But Christ is saying, no, I'm more.

1525. Every phase throughout this story,

1526. Jesus answers him, truly, truly, I

1527. say to you that unless you're born

1528. again, you cannot see the kingdom

  1529. of God.

  1530. He moves the story.

1531. He reframes your questions and he

  1532. drives it home.

1533. You really are not so concerned

1534. about, Christ is always concerned

  1535. about you.

1536. He's always concerned about getting

1537. to the heart of the matter of the

1538. fact that what I want, God wants

1539. from you is your love for him.

1540. And he wants to love you and he

1541. wants to give his life to you.

1542. And that's why he asked these

  1543. probing questions.

1544. And Nicodemus said to him, how can

1545. a man be born again when he is

  1546. old?

1547. Can he enter the second time into

1548. the mother's womb and be born?

1549. Jesus answered, truly, truly, I say

1550. to you that unless you're born of

1551. water and born of the Spirit, he

1552. cannot enter the kingdom of God.

1553. That which is born of the flesh is

1554. flesh and that which is born of the

  1555. Spirit is spirit.

1556. Do not marvel that I said to you,

1557. you must be born again.

1558. The wind blows where it wishes and

1559. you hear the sound, but you do not

1560. know where it comes from or where

  1561. it goes.

1562. So it is with everyone who is born

  1563. of the Spirit.

1564. And Nicodemus said to him, another

1565. question that comes with their

  1566. service.

1567. Well, how can I be born again?

1568. How can I have this new creation?

1569. Jesus answers him and he says, are you

1570. a teacher of Israel and yet you do

1571. not understand the things, these

  1572. things?

1573. Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak

1574. of that which we know and we bear

1575. witness to what we have seen, but you

1576. do not receive our testimony.

1577. If I have told you earthly things, how

  1578. will you believe?

1579. How will you believe if I tell you

  1580. heavenly things?

1581. No one has ascended to heaven except

1582. he who descended from heaven, the

  1583. Son of Man.

1584. You see how that comes together, how

1585. he's telling us the story of the

  1586. nativity here?

1587. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in

1588. the wilderness, so must the Son of

1589. Man be lifted up that whoever believes

1590. in him will have eternal life.

1591. God's purpose statement for you.

1592. For God so loved the world, you want to

  1593. say it with me?

1594. That he gave his only begotten Son, that

1595. whosoever believes in him should not

1596. perish but have everlasting life.

1597. It's interesting that this word born

1598. again, again, it has two in the Greek

  1599. languages, has two choices.

1600. One is palin, which means a repetition

1601. of an act to redo what was done earlier.

1602. Do you want to redo your life?

1603. Do you want to redo and rehearse the

1604. same things that led you to this moment?

1605. The old habits, the things that have

  1606. caused such failure.

1607. Well, the second of the Greek terms, the

1608. one used here, is anothen.

1609. And it says, which is also depicts a

1610. repeated action, the same, a repeated

1611. action, but listen to this.

1612. But it requires the original source to

  1613. repeat it.

1614. It means from above, from a higher place,

1615. things that come from the heaven of God.

1616. God created the heavens and the earth.

1617. God created you, and he recreates you

1618. in his Holy Spirit, in his holy, eternal

  1619. being.

1620. Can't you say praise God for that?

1621. God created you, and he recreates you

  1622. in the divine moment.

1623. God created you, and he recreates you

  1624. in the divine moment.

  1625. This is the purpose.

1626. It's not just rehearsing this morning,

1627. the fact that some baby was born in

  1628. Bethlehem.

1629. It's about the fact that God himself

1630. stepped into our lives, stepped into our

1631. worlds, and he provided an opportunity for

1632. us to be born again.

1633. That he, the author, the creator of this

1634. world, has taken his hand, has taken

1635. every measure in order to give you life.

  1636. It's awesome.

1637. Well, preachers who don't preach a long

1638. time often preach too much.

1639. Let me just, let me conclude with a quote I

1640. found by, it was interesting.

1641. It kind of connects the Christmas mood with

1642. the teaching that we have.

  1643. Jorgen Moulton said this,

1644. The ultimate reason for our hope is not to

1645. be found in all that we want or wish for

  1646. and wait for.

1647. The ultimate reason that we are wanted and

1648. wished for and wanted for, what is it that

  1649. awaits us?

1650. Does anything wait for us at all, or are we

  1651. alone?

1652. Whenever we have our hope on trust in the

1653. divine mystery, we feel deep down in our

1654. hearts that there is someone who is

  1655. wanting you.

1656. Do you feel wanted this morning?

  1657. There's someone who's hoping for you.

1658. There is someone who believes in you.

1659. God is our last hope because we are God's

  1660. first hope, first love.

1661. God so loved the world.

1662. God so loved you that he gave his only

1663. begotten son that if you will believe in

1664. him, he will give you a new creation.

1665. Father, help us to embrace this truth.

1666. Help us to love you.

1667. Help us to respond to you in this intimate

1668. moment of transaction between your Holy

  1669. Spirit and us.

  1670. For it's in Christ's name I pray.

  1671. Amen.

  1672. Amen.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.

  1675. Amen.

  1676. Amen.

  1677. Amen.

  1678. Amen.

  1679. Amen.

  1680. Amen.

  1681. Amen.

  1682. Amen.

  1683. Amen.

  1684. Amen.

  1685. Amen.

  1686. Amen.

  1687. Amen.

  1688. Amen.

  1689. Amen.

  1690. Amen.

  1691. Amen.

  1692. Amen.

  1693. Amen.

  1694. Amen.

  1695. Amen.

  1696. Amen.

  1697. Amen.

  1698. Amen.

  1699. Amen.

  1700. Amen.

  1701. Amen.

  1702. Amen.

  1703. Amen.
