  1. Well, good morning, church. It's good to be back with you all.

  2. Thank you for your prayers for me and for Beth and our family while we were away on sabbatical.

  3. Our time was full of good rest and refreshment and good times of connection with one another and with God.

  4. So we're very grateful for your prayers and for your support of us.

  5. And we've been excited to hear, now that we're back, all that God has been up to over the past three months.

  6. As we've heard stories of new members joining and new services being pioneered,

  7. like the testimony service around Thanksgiving and new ministry opportunities being developed by the care team and others,

  8. it's just been a great reminder that the work of God's kingdom is His work.

  9. And that God has blessed this church with a great group of faithful elders and deacons and staff and ministry leaders and members.

  10. What a good reminder that the work of ministry is our work, right?

  11. Together, as members, every one of us.

  12. So it's been a real joy to hear all the stories of how God's been at work through you while we've been away.

  13. And I'm sure we'll hear more of them in the coming weeks.

  14. We look forward to that.

  15. Well, let me invite you to turn with me to the book of Revelation.

  16. We will be looking at page 968 in the Pew Bible.

  17. Go ahead and turn there with me.

  18. Revelation chapter 6.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  19. We're going to walk through Revelation chapter 6 today.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  20. But before we walk through Revelation chapter 6, let me invite you to go on an imaginary walk with me.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  21. Walk with me in your mind through an art gallery.

  22. And this wing of the art gallery, in this wing, the curators have gathered all their depictions of the crucifixion.

  23. If you've walked through, say, the Yale Art Gallery on Chapel Street, you'll know that most art museums have multiple works on the cross.

  24. But now, take a look at those pieces with me.

  25. Imagine a piece by an unnamed medieval artist.

  26. It's very two-dimensional, and the faces are blank, almost forlorn.

  27. Now, take a look at a modern piece by Salvador Dali, the great surrealist.

  28. And you see Christ on a perfectly geometrical cross, almost soaring over the earth.

  29. Last, take a look at the 16th century piece by Grunewald.

  30. And beside the wounded Christ, you can't help but see John the Baptist with his finger just pointing, pointing.

  31. Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  32. Now, each of these pieces is about the same thing, right?

  33. The same event in history, the death of Christ.

  34. But each one shows it from a unique perspective.

  35. Each painting draws out something important and meaningful that the others don't.

  36. And what I want to suggest this morning is that the book of Revelation functions very similarly.

  37. Starting in chapter 6, John is going to relay to us, his audience, a series of visions that God gives him.

  38. Most of these visions are structured around the number 7.

  39. Seven seals, seven trumpets, seven bowls, and so on.

  40. But each of these visions is giving us a portrait of the same thing.

  41. They're telling the same story over and over again from a fresh angle, drawing out something new and important each time.

  42. And I'd like to suggest that the event or the story that each of these visions is telling in its own way is the story of the church age,

  43. up to and including the return of Christ.

  44. As we saw way back in chapter 1, this book of Revelation is about what's to come.

  45. What was to come from the first century when John was writing all the way to the return of Christ at the end of history?

  46. What can the church expect as it lives through this age?

  47. What will life be like as followers of Jesus?

  48. And what will his glorious return mean for us in the world?

  49. Now, one clue that this is what's going on in the book of Revelation,

  50. that is that we have multiple visions, multiple perspectives of the same thing,

  51. is that as you read through Revelation, you start to realize that the return of Christ in glory to save and to judge

  52. is described multiple times.

  53. If you have a Bible open, you can kind of flip with me.

  54. In the vision of the seven seals in chapters 6 through 7,

  55. we see the return of Christ depicted and described.

  56. In chapter 6, verses 12 through 17.

  57. And then as we go into the vision of the seven trumpets in chapters 8 through 11,

  58. we see the return of Christ and his return in judgment described in chapter 11, verses 15 through 19.

  59. And then in the vision of the sort of seven symbolic figures that we have in chapters 12 through 14,

  60. we see the return of Christ described yet again in chapter 14, verses 14 through 20.

  61. And so on and so on.

  62. So as we read these visions, we're asking,

  63. what does God want us to know about living faithfully in this age,

  64. this last great age of redemptive history that we live in between Christ's first and second coming,

  65. these last days, as the New Testament calls it?

  66. How do we live faithfully and in hope in this age as we look forward to the return of the Lord Jesus in glory?

  67. Now, perhaps you've heard different approaches to the book of Revelation.

  68. As Matt mentioned, we're going to have a Sunday school class coming up where we kind of talk about different approaches

  69. and where, you know, we've kind of come up with this one.

  70. You know, this approach that will take a trinity over the next few months is one that many faithful Christians have taken throughout church history.

  71. So it's not just something we've kind of like made up because it seems nice.

  72. But if you're interested in learning more, you can come to Sunday school and we'll take a look at that starting on February 4th.

  73. But I hope that you'll see that as we walk through the rest of the book of Revelation,

  74. no matter which interpretive approach you take,

  75. many of the spiritual lessons for us are the same today.

  76. God wants us to know what to expect as we follow him faithfully in this world.

  77. God wants us to know what spiritual dynamics are at work as we make this heavenly pilgrimage as his church.

  78. And God wants us to know what future he has in store for us and for all of creation.

  79. So let's pick up then in chapter 6 as the first of these visions begins.

  80. Now remember, John has just been swept up to see the heavenly throne room

  81. and the scroll of God's plan to deliver and to judge and to bring about his kingdom once and for all was brought forth,

  82. but it was sealed with seven seals.

  83. And the only one worthy to open that scroll was the Lamb who was slain, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  84. He alone is worthy.

  85. And the Lord Jesus took the scroll in chapter 5 and all of heaven rejoiced.

  86. And then John shows us this in chapter 6, verse 1.

  87. Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals.

  88. And I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder,

  89. Come.

  90. And I looked and behold a white horse.

  91. And its rider had a bow and a crown was given to it.

  92. And he came out conquering and to conquer.

  93. When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say,

  94. Come.

  95. And out came another horse, bright red.

  96. And it said, its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth so that people would slay one another.

  97. And he was given a great sword.

  98. When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, Come.

  99. And I looked and behold a black horse.

  100. And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand.

  101. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures say,

  102. A quart of wheat for a denarius.

  103. And three quarts of barley for a denarius.

  104. And do not harm the oil and wine.

  105. When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, Come.

  106. And I looked and behold a pale horse.

  107. And its rider's name was Death.

  108. And Hades followed him.

  109. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence.

  110. And by wild beasts of the earth.

  111. When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne.

  112. They cried out with a loud voice, O sovereign Lord, holy and true.

  113. How long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell in the earth?

  114. And they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete,

  115. who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

  116. When he opened the sixth seal, I looked and behold, there was a great earthquake.

  117. And the sun became black as sackcloth.

  118. And the full moon became like blood.

  119. And the stars of the sky fell to the earth.

  120. As the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale.

  121. The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up.

  122. And every mountain and island was removed from its place.

  123. Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful and everyone,

  124. slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains,

  125. calling to the mountains and rocks,

  126. fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.

  127. For the great day of their wrath has come.

  128. And who can stand?

  129. So as the Lord Jesus opens the seals,

  130. what do we see?

  131. Well, it's unsettling, isn't it?

  132. For what we see is the unfolding of God's wrath.

  133. That is, God's just anger against sin and evil and idolatry.

  134. Now for most of us, I'm guessing, the idea of a wrathful God makes us uncomfortable.

  135. Isn't God a God of love, we say?

  136. And yes, God is a God of love.

  137. There is no part of God, no attribute of God,

  138. that isn't saturated with his eternal, triune love.

  139. But imagine for a moment with me a God that wasn't also a God of wrath.

  140. What if God wasn't a God who stood firmly opposed to sin, to evil, to injustice, to idolatry?

  141. What sort of God would it be who didn't hate sin?

  142. What if God saw murder and racism and exploitation and was simply indifferent?

  143. That wouldn't be a God worthy of trust, would it?

  144. Let alone worship.

  145. In fact, that God wouldn't even be worthy of the name of love.

  146. If you see your child being harmed or your friend being harmed,

  147. you feel rightly angry and opposed to that, right?

  148. You feel wrath.

  149. You want it to end.

  150. Why?

  151. Because you love them.

  152. No one would question in that moment if you were a loving parent or not,

  153. if you were a loving friend or not.

  154. No, they would see your opposition to sin and evil.

  155. They would see it as the proper response of your love, right?

  156. So it is, friends, with God, but to an infinite degree.

  157. For God to be worthy of the name God,

  158. He must be a God who's rightly opposed to sin and to evil.

  159. He must be a God, yes, of wrath.

  160. So it is unsettling, this picture.

  161. But it is God as God truly is and must be.

  162. Well, let's see then what this vision tells us about God's wrath.

  163. First, in verses 1 through 8, we're told that God's wrath is underway now.

  164. The first four seals pick up two threads of Old Testament imagery.

  165. The first is from Zechariah, chapters 1 and 6.

    Zechariah 1 chapter mention

  166. In chapter 1 of the prophet Zechariah,

  167. he sees a vision of four groups of horses of different color

  168. commissioned by God to patrol the earth.

  169. And in that Old Testament vision,

  170. these patrols that go out,

  171. these four different colored horses find that the world is at rest.

  172. The world is comfortable,

  173. even though these nations have trampled on God's people

  174. and have despised God's name.

  175. Then in chapter 6 of Zechariah,

  176. four chariots are sent forth,

  177. pulled by four teams, again, of horses of different color.

  178. And presumably, those horses are sent forth

  179. as symbols of God's judgment.

  180. So that's the first Old Testament thread

  181. that we see here in the first four seals.

  182. That's where John's picking up this theme

  183. of different colored horses going forth.

  184. And it tells us that these four seals,

  185. these first four seals are expressions of God's judgment against the world.

  186. Now, the second Old Testament thread we see

  187. is at the end of verse 8 in Revelation 6.

  188. And there, John summarizes these first four seals.

  189. He summarizes all first four of them like this.

  190. He says,

  191. Now, that list of terrible judgments,

  192. sword, famine, pestilence, wild beasts,

  193. that was the common way that the Old Testament would summarize

  194. the terrible penalty for breaking God's covenant.

  195. We see that in a number of places,

  196. like Leviticus 26 or Ezekiel 14.

  197. It's throughout the Old Testament.

  198. Whenever it would speak of the consequences

  199. of breaking God's covenant,

  200. these were the terrible things

  201. that would come crashing down on God's people.

  202. And what ultimately was it in the Old Testament

  203. that broke the covenant with God?

  204. What was the great thing

  205. that broke the people's faith and allegiance with Him?

  206. It was idolatry.

  207. Worshiping a God other than the true God.

  208. Turning away from God

  209. to worship and serve a created thing.

  210. That was the ultimate breaking of the covenant with God.

  211. So these two Old Testament threads suggest

  212. that what these four horsemen represent

  213. are the unfolding of worldwide judgment upon idolatry.

  214. And friends, you don't have to be a scholar of history

  215. or a current events buff

  216. to realize that these terrible consequences

  217. have been happening throughout the church age.

  218. The second horse represents war and civil strife.

  219. You know, just as Jesus said in Matthew 24,

  220. there would be wars and rumors of wars the world over

  221. as we awaited His return.

  222. The third horse represents famine and inequity.

  223. Verse 6 mentions a denarius,

  224. which was a typical day's wage

  225. for a typical day laborer.

  226. And a quart of wheat was just enough

  227. for one person for one day.

  228. So a denarius for a quart of wheat

  229. was basically just enough to get by

  230. for one person for one day.

  231. Three quarts of barley were sort of a cheaper grain,

  232. but that was enough for kind of one family for one day.

  233. So what's being described here

  234. as this horseman symbolically holds scales in its hand

  235. is that because of famine or exorbitant inflation or both,

  236. these verses are speaking of people being forced

  237. to live at a level that's barely subsisting.

  238. It's barely sustainable.

  239. Sadly, this verse also mentions oil and wine.

  240. Now, oil and wine, unlike wheat or barley,

  241. would have been products that only the rich could afford.

  242. Most people didn't do oil and wine.

  243. They did wheat and barley.

  244. Only the rich could afford those things.

  245. But notice, the rich aren't affected.

  246. In other words, this is a description

  247. of deep economic inequity.

  248. The poor can barely survive.

  249. The rich seem unaffected.

  250. Doesn't that sound like a lot of human history?

  251. And the fourth horse, representing death,

  252. is sort of a pale color.

  253. Probably, that word meant something like a pale green,

  254. like a sickly color.

  255. And many think that this horse represents pestilence and plague.

  256. But friends, notice that there's a bit of a progression here,

  257. isn't there?

  258. You know, warfare in the ancient world,

  259. if there was war, if there was civil strife,

  260. you know, that would often destroy a lot of the local environment.

  261. The crops would be destroyed.

  262. They would be burned.

  263. They would be ravaged.

  264. So war would lead to famine and inequity and inflation.

  265. And then in that status of war and famine,

  266. often that was sort of the breeding ground for disease and for death.

  267. But where does this progression start?

  268. It starts with the first horseman.

  269. And the first horseman at first looks kind of promising, doesn't he?

  270. He's riding a white horse.

  271. He's wearing a crown.

  272. He's holding a bow.

  273. So promising does this first rider look

  274. that some commentators on Revelation have wondered

  275. if this might be a picture of Christ riding forth to triumph.

  276. But friends, it's not so.

  277. That is not what we have here.

  278. All four judgments are from God and the Lamb,

  279. but this one's the most telling.

  280. You know, all of us seem to recoil at the thought of famine

  281. and war and disease and death.

  282. But this first rider promises to conquer.

  283. He promises to come and end all our earthly problems,

  284. to win our battles,

  285. to help our side triumph.

  286. But what comes in his wake?

  287. War and famine and disease and death.

  288. When the lust for power and control,

  289. when the desire to conquer drives us,

  290. then we find that sooner or later,

  291. the rest of these disasters follow in its wake.

  292. Strife, inequity, and death.

  293. And the terrible thing about the first seal,

  294. this first horseman,

  295. friends, is this spiritual reality.

  296. Most often in this life,

  297. God's just wrath against sin and idolatry

  298. is expressed by God giving us over

  299. to the very thing we want.

  300. We see this in Romans 1.

  301. How is God's wrath being revealed from heaven

  302. at the present time?

  303. The Apostle Paul says that because

  304. we've exchanged the worship of God

  305. for a created thing,

  306. God's wrath is being expressed

  307. by giving us over to the very thing

  308. we say we want.

  309. He lets us go.

  310. And that's exactly what we see here

  311. in Revelation 6, 1 through 8.

  312. As humans, we want to conquer.

  313. We want to end all our problems

  314. through power and victory.

  315. We want to see our side win.

  316. So we exalt leaders or programs or policies

  317. that will serve that conquering end.

  318. But what's the result?

  319. War and famine and death.

  320. Now why does God hand us over in this way?

  321. Why does God give us what we want

  322. when the consequences are so terrible?

  323. Why does He allow us to experience

  324. all these things?

  325. Well, there are a number of things

  326. the Bible has to say about that.

  327. But one reason God in His justice

  328. allows us to experience

  329. the consequences of our own idolatry at times

  330. is so that we might lose

  331. our confidence in those false saviors

  332. and turn to Him in repentance.

  333. And notice that the effects

  334. of these first four seals

  335. are divinely limited.

  336. They were given authority

  337. over a fourth of the earth,

  338. verse 8 says.

  339. Only a fourth.

  340. God in His kindness

  341. limits what human idolatry

  342. and the lust for power and wealth

  343. would wreck upon His creation.

  344. He limits it to only one-fourth the effect.

  345. Imagine if it were otherwise.

  346. Can you imagine a world

  347. with a 75% increase

  348. in famine

  349. and in inequity

  350. and in disease

  351. and death?

  352. Only God's undeserved kindness

  353. keeps this world

  354. from falling

  355. into utter horror.

  356. And His kindness, friends,

  357. is meant to lead us

  358. to repentance.

  359. The rich,

  360. the powerful,

  361. the boastful,

  362. the ones who ride forth

  363. conquering and to conquer,

  364. they look shiny

  365. and promising

  366. and full of hope.

  367. And a dark part of our hearts

  368. might even want to be like them

  369. and join them

  370. in their seeming triumph,

  371. whether it's social triumph

  372. or economic triumph

  373. or political triumph.

  374. But friend,

  375. there's no life

  376. to be found there.

  377. The only real life

  378. to be found

  379. is not in the path

  380. of the conquering ones,

  381. but in the path

  382. of the crucified one

  383. who came not to be served,

  384. but to serve

  385. and to give His life

  386. as a ransom for many.

  387. Jesus said,

  388. it's only those

  389. who lose their life

  390. who will find it.

  391. So, church,

  392. let me ask this.

  393. Are you tempted

  394. to chase

  395. after the world's power

  396. and the glitz

  397. and the glam

  398. and the promises

  399. of wealth

  400. and power

  401. of ease

  402. and security?

  403. I know at times I am.

  404. But what if

  405. God gave you what you wanted?

  406. At the end of the day,

  407. would it be life

  408. or would it be death?

  409. The Christians of John's day

  410. would have been tempted,

  411. I think,

  412. to look at the Roman Empire

  413. and believe the lie

  414. that the Roman Emperor

  415. and Empire

  416. was the one

  417. who could secure

  418. lasting peace

  419. and prosperity.

  420. They'd be so tempted

  421. to feel that allegiance

  422. to Rome

  423. with all its apparent

  424. power and wealth

  425. would lead

  426. to an eternal day

  427. for all of humanity.

  428. But friends,

  429. that was a lie.

  430. And John was trying

  431. to wake them up

  432. with this passage

  433. to not believe it.

  434. There was only one

  435. worthy of our affections

  436. and our allegiance.

  437. There's only one,

  438. the Lord Jesus.

  439. And these first four seals

  440. show us a vivid picture

  441. of God's wrath unfolding

  442. as human idolatry

  443. leads us to ruin.

  444. And they warn us

  445. to turn to God

  446. from idols

  447. and serve the Lord Jesus.

  448. Now, turning to the fifth seal,

  449. John's vision takes us

  450. from earth

  451. back to heaven,

  452. back up to the throne room.

  453. In the midst of all this

  454. political, economic,

  455. and social strife,

  456. brought about

  457. by God handing us over

  458. to our idolatry,

  459. we see the kind of next step

  460. of John's vision here

  461. and the second point

  462. I want to cover.

  463. We see in verses 6 through 11

  464. that in the midst

  465. of all of this,

  466. the church

  467. is not promised

  468. physical protection

  469. from evil

  470. in this age.

  471. We see there

  472. in those verses

  473. that Christians

  474. are not immune

  475. from the devastating effects

  476. of war and famine

  477. and disease

  478. that run rampant

  479. in a fallen world.

  480. In fact,

  481. more than not,

  482. Christians become

  483. the explicit target

  484. of the world's

  485. satanic lust

  486. for conquering

  487. violence.

  488. You know,

  489. you can visit a site

  490. like Voice of the Martyrs

  491. and see how this

  492. wasn't just a reality

  493. in John's day

  494. as Roman persecution

  495. began to rise

  496. against the church.

  497. It's been a reality

  498. in every era

  499. of the church

  500. and particularly

  501. in our own.

  502. You know,

  503. in the West,

  504. we may not feel

  505. the full brunt

  506. of this violence,

  507. but our brothers

  508. and sisters

  509. in the global church

  510. do.

  511. I just got an email

  512. from Christianity Today

  513. this week

  514. citing some statistics

  515. from a study

  516. that was done

  517. in the last year

  518. saying almost

  519. 5,000 Christians

  520. were killed

  521. for their faith

  522. last year

  523. and almost 4,000

  524. were abducted.

  525. Nearly 15,000 churches

  526. were attacked

  527. or closed

  528. and more than

  529. 295,000 Christians

  530. were forcibly

  531. displaced

  532. from their homes

  533. because of their faith.

  534. That article

  535. goes on to say

  536. just shocking statistics

  537. about the number

  538. of Christians globally

  539. that live

  540. in areas

  541. of heavy persecution.

  542. In some places

  543. it's like 1 in 5.

  544. So brothers and sisters,

  545. let's not pretend

  546. that following Christ

  547. is a ticket

  548. to our best life now.

  549. Especially if by best life

  550. you mean

  551. being wealthy

  552. and powerful

  553. and free of earthly cares.

  554. Jesus promised us

  555. the opposite.

  556. In this world

  557. you will have trouble,

  558. he said.

  559. You will experience

  560. sickness and trials

  561. and hardship and death.

  562. Take up your cross.

  563. and follow me.

  564. You see friends,

  565. the world wants to conquer.

  566. But ours is the path

  567. of the martyr.

  568. As we are united to Jesus,

  569. this is how we truly overcome.

  570. We witness

  571. through suffering.

  572. That's what the word

  573. martyr literally means.

  574. A witness.

  575. One who testifies

  576. to something

  577. so good

  578. that it's better

  579. than life itself.

  580. And notice

  581. that God says

  582. really surprisingly

  583. that this age

  584. won't end

  585. until the full number

  586. of martyrs

  587. is complete.

  588. God strikes us

  589. as very odd,

  590. doesn't it?

  591. We expect God

  592. to avenge his people,

  593. to make the violence

  594. stop,

  595. to rescue his church,

  596. his beloved,

  597. and bring her to safety.

  598. And friends,

  599. he will.

  600. But until then,

  601. there is a path

  602. for us to walk,

  603. to bear witness

  604. through suffering,

  605. to join our life

  606. to the life of Christ,

  607. and to walk the way

  608. of the cross

  609. that he walked.

  610. To hold up

  611. to the world

  612. how worthy Jesus is

  613. by clinging to him,

  614. by trusting in him,

  615. by obeying him,

  616. even if the world

  617. seeks to end our life.

  618. You see,

  619. the cross

  620. and the resurrection

  621. of Jesus

  622. changes everything.

  623. If I am united

  624. to the crucified

  625. and risen Jesus,

  626. then losing

  627. this physical life

  628. doesn't steal

  629. the most important

  630. and valuable thing

  631. I have.

  632. My life

  633. is hid

  634. with Christ

  635. and God.

  636. He promises

  637. that you and I

  638. will share

  639. in his resurrection.

  640. Ultimately,

  641. friends,

  642. the world

  643. doesn't hold

  644. the power

  645. of death

  646. and the grave.

  647. Though they try

  648. to wield it,

  649. they don't

  650. hold

  651. the keys

  652. to it.

  653. Do you remember

  654. the vision

  655. in Revelation chapter 1?

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  656. Who is it

  657. that holds

  658. the keys

  659. to death

  660. and the grave?

  661. It's the risen

  662. Lord Jesus.

  663. And if we belong

  664. to him,

  665. not even death

  666. can separate us

  667. from the love

  668. of God

  669. in Christ Jesus

  670. our Lord.

  671. And look what John

  672. sees in verses 9

  673. through 11.

  674. while the martyrs

  675. await the final

  676. resurrection

  677. and the new heavens

  678. and new earth,

  679. where are they?

  680. They're under the altar,

  681. John says,

  682. right there where the incense

  683. of the heavenly temple

  684. rises with the prayers

  685. of the saints.

  686. Again,

  687. John's using

  688. heavily symbolic language

  689. to describe

  690. heavenly realities.

  691. In other words,

  692. these saints

  693. are right there

  694. in God's presence

  695. and they're given

  696. a white robe.

  697. A white robe

  698. is a symbol

  699. for Christ's righteousness

  700. that they have.

  701. That though the world

  702. condemned them,

  703. though the world

  704. hated them

  705. and clothed them

  706. in black,

  707. God overturns

  708. the world's full verdict

  709. and they're clothed

  710. in white,

  711. pure and without spot.

  712. And notice

  713. what they pray.

  714. They pray,

  715. O sovereign Lord,

  716. holy and true,

  717. how long before

  718. you will judge

  719. and avenge our blood

  720. on those who dwell

  721. in the earth?

  722. They call out

  723. for God to come

  724. in perfect justice

  725. and make things right.

  726. Now,

  727. pause there

  728. on their prayer

  729. and consider,

  730. friends.

  731. You know,

  732. you read that prayer

  733. for the first time

  734. and at first

  735. it sounds harsh,

  736. right?

  737. It sounds even

  738. pretty violent.

  739. It sounds like

  740. they're thirsting

  741. for revenge.

  742. But that's not

  743. actually what

  744. they're saying.

  745. They aren't asking God,

  746. God,

  747. when will I get

  748. to go judge

  749. and get revenge?

  750. No.

  751. They're entrusting

  752. all judgment

  753. to God.

  754. God,

  755. when will you

  756. judge

  757. and avenge?

  758. Friends,

  759. if you believe

  760. in a God

  761. who really does

  762. oppose

  763. sin and evil,

  764. if you believe

  765. in a God

  766. of wrath

  767. who will one day

  768. judge with

  769. perfect judgment,

  770. it actually

  771. releases you

  772. from the burden

  773. of having

  774. to get

  775. your own

  776. revenge.

  777. You know,

  778. sometimes we think,

  779. we think,

  780. man,

  781. how can you believe

  782. in a God of wrath

  783. and live a life

  784. of peace?

  785. How can you

  786. forgive your enemies

  787. if you think

  788. that one day

  789. God will judge

  790. everyone?

  791. But friends,

  792. don't you see,

  793. that's the only way

  794. that you can live

  795. a life of real

  796. peace and forgiveness,

  797. especially if you've

  798. experienced

  799. real wrong.

  800. If there's no God,

  801. if there's no

  802. divine wrath,

  803. if there's no

  804. perfect justice

  805. to come,

  806. then it's up to you

  807. to judge

  808. and to make

  809. things right.

  810. you have to

  811. balance the scales,

  812. you have to

  813. redress the wrong.

  814. But of course,

  815. as humans,

  816. we can't possibly

  817. do that with

  818. perfect justice.

  819. We always end up

  820. paying back more,

  821. we always end up

  822. exacting more pain,

  823. thinking that that's

  824. going to finally

  825. stop the cycle

  826. of violence.

  827. But it doesn't.

  828. It does just

  829. the opposite.

  830. It increases it.

  831. And round and round

  832. it goes,

  833. hurting and being

  834. hurt,

  835. killing and being

  836. killed.

  837. the only thing

  838. that can get

  839. our hearts

  840. off the cycle

  841. of revenge

  842. is a full belief

  843. in the perfect

  844. justice of God

  845. to come.

  846. Friends,

  847. He will settle

  848. the scales.

  849. We don't have to.

  850. He will see

  851. that every wrong

  852. is made right.

  853. He will see

  854. that every wound

  855. is healed.

  856. He will see

  857. that sins

  858. are forgiven.

  859. I know it

  860. sounds counterintuitive,

  861. but it's the

  862. only real way.

  863. If you're going

  864. to live a life

  865. of peace

  866. in this world,

  867. you have to

  868. believe in a God

  869. of perfect justice.

  870. Yes,

  871. you have to

  872. believe in a

  873. God of wrath.

  874. And that's

  875. where our passage

  876. ends.

  877. In the first

  878. four seals,

  879. we see the

  880. outworking of

  881. God's wrath

  882. in this age

  883. as idolatry

  884. kind of takes

  885. its effect.

  886. In the fifth seal,

  887. we see that the

  888. church is not

  889. protected from

  890. evil in this age.

  891. And then the

  892. sixth seal,

  893. we see,

  894. third and last,

  895. that one day

  896. God's wrath

  897. will be poured

  898. out on rebellious

  899. humanity once

  900. and for all.

  901. In verses 12

  902. through 14,

  903. John sees

  904. the created

  905. universe

  906. starting to

  907. come undone.

  908. earth.

  909. The earthquake

  910. is a common

  911. biblical image

  912. for the

  913. arrival of

  914. God.

  915. When God

  916. showed up

  917. on Mount Sinai,

  918. the earth

  919. shook.

  920. And when the

  921. Creator at last,

  922. once and for

  923. all,

  924. steps into

  925. His creation,

  926. it's as if

  927. the seams

  928. of being

  929. begin to

  930. crack.

  931. The holiness

  932. of God

  933. and the

  934. Lamb are

  935. so great,

  936. the weight

  937. of God's

  938. glory is

  939. so immense

  940. that the

  941. earth can

  942. no longer

  943. bear up.

  944. And everything

  945. that we've

  946. trusted in

  947. in this life,

  948. our status,

  949. our wealth,

  950. our power,

  951. our health,

  952. our jobs,

  953. our friends,

  954. everything that

  955. we use to

  956. try to prop

  957. up our

  958. existence,

  959. to keep

  960. ourselves

  961. distracted,

  962. to think

  963. ourselves good,

  964. it all

  965. melts away.

  966. and the

  967. seams

  968. give way.

  969. Before the

  970. unbearable

  971. holiness of

  972. God,

  973. friends,

  974. none of that

  975. will matter.

  976. And just as

  977. the creation

  978. will be undone,

  979. so will all

  980. of humanity.

  981. In verse 15,

  982. John lists

  983. seven types

  984. of people.

  985. Many of them

  986. are powerful

  987. and wealthy,

  988. but not all

  989. of them.

  990. seven,

  991. the judgment

  992. of God

  993. is the

  994. great

  995. leveler

  996. of humanity.

  997. Seven,

  998. of course,

  999. is a number

  1000. symbolizing

  1001. completeness

  1002. and totality.

  1003. John sees

  1004. that everyone

  1005. will stand

  1006. before their

  1007. creator

  1008. on the last

  1009. day,

  1010. and no amount

  1011. of power

  1012. or prestige

  1013. or wealth

  1014. and no amount

  1015. of religion

  1016. or good works

  1017. will matter.

  1018. You know,

  1019. it's funny,

  1020. sometimes in

  1021. our cynicism

  1022. we say,

  1023. you know,

  1024. if God wanted

  1025. us to believe

  1026. in Him,

  1027. He could just

  1028. show up

  1029. and make it

  1030. a little easier.

  1031. But what if

  1032. God did show

  1033. up?

  1034. What if the

  1035. sovereign Lord,

  1036. holy and true,

  1037. did show up?

  1038. in the presence

  1039. of such

  1040. blinding

  1041. holiness,

  1042. do you know

  1043. how we would

  1044. experience God

  1045. showing up?

  1046. How would we

  1047. as sinners

  1048. who've lived

  1049. our life,

  1050. who've lived

  1051. more of our

  1052. life chasing

  1053. idols than

  1054. giving God

  1055. the thanks

  1056. and praise

  1057. that He deserves,

  1058. how would we

  1059. experience just

  1060. the very holiness

  1061. of His presence?

  1062. Friends,

  1063. we would experience

  1064. it as nothing

  1065. but wrath.

  1066. Have you ever

  1067. walked outside

  1068. from a dark

  1069. room when the

  1070. curtains are drawn,

  1071. you know,

  1072. you kind of

  1073. step outside

  1074. and come right

  1075. into the sun?

  1076. For a moment

  1077. it's blinding,

  1078. isn't it?

  1079. The sun's just

  1080. too bright for

  1081. your eyes,

  1082. right?

  1083. Until they adjust.

  1084. But what if

  1085. not just your

  1086. eyes,

  1087. but your whole

  1088. life was exposed

  1089. to the God

  1090. who made you?

  1091. What if your

  1092. heart was opened

  1093. bare before

  1094. the God

  1095. who burns

  1096. brighter than

  1097. a thousand

  1098. suns?

  1099. Would we

  1100. all not cry

  1101. out like those

  1102. in verse 16

  1103. and 17?

  1104. Hide us.

  1105. Hide us

  1106. from the face

  1107. of the one

  1108. who sits on

  1109. the throne

  1110. and from the

  1111. wrath of the

  1112. Lamb.

  1113. For the great

  1114. day of the

  1115. wrath has come

  1116. and who can

  1117. stand?

  1118. Who can

  1119. stand?

  1120. Of course,

  1121. the answer

  1122. is no one

  1123. can stand.

  1124. Not you,

  1125. not me.

  1126. It doesn't

  1127. matter if you've

  1128. grown up in

  1129. church or this

  1130. is the first

  1131. time you've

  1132. ever been to

  1133. one of these

  1134. gatherings.

  1135. No one

  1136. can stand.

  1137. There's no

  1138. escape from

  1139. God and the

  1140. Lamb.

  1141. How could

  1142. there be any

  1143. escape?

  1144. God created

  1145. you.

  1146. He upholds

  1147. you in

  1148. being every

  1149. second.

  1150. You are

  1151. completely and

  1152. utterly dependent

  1153. on Him for

  1154. everything.

  1155. Friends, there

  1156. is no you

  1157. apart from

  1158. Him and

  1159. apart from

  1160. His choice

  1161. to keep you

  1162. and me

  1163. existing every

  1164. second.

  1165. There is no

  1166. escape from

  1167. Him.

  1168. There is no

  1169. hiding from

  1170. Him.

  1171. There is no

  1172. refuge from

  1173. Him.

  1174. But here's the

  1175. good news.

  1176. And it's the

  1177. only good news

  1178. that matters.

  1179. There is no

  1180. refuge from

  1181. Him.

  1182. But there is

  1183. refuge in

  1184. Him.

  1185. The only

  1186. hiding place

  1187. from the wrath

  1188. of the Lamb

  1189. is the blood

  1190. of the Lamb.

  1191. There's one

  1192. more Old

  1193. Testament echo

  1194. in Revelation 6

  1195. that's worth

  1196. pointing out.

  1197. And it's

  1198. actually right

  1199. there in

  1200. verse 16

  1201. where all of

  1202. humanity is

  1203. calling out

  1204. hide us.

  1205. And that

  1206. same cry

  1207. hide us

  1208. goes all

  1209. the way

  1210. back in

  1211. human history

  1212. back,

  1213. back,

  1214. back to

  1215. the very

  1216. first humans,

  1217. to our

  1218. very first

  1219. parents in

  1220. the Garden

  1221. of Eden.

  1222. Adam and

  1223. Eve having

  1224. sinned against

  1225. God,

  1226. torn up

  1227. inside and

  1228. out with

  1229. guilt and

  1230. shame.

  1231. they hear

  1232. God coming

  1233. and they

  1234. try to

  1235. hide us.

  1236. And what

  1237. does God

  1238. do?

  1239. To their

  1240. fears,

  1241. He gives

  1242. them a

  1243. promise.

  1244. And for

  1245. their nakedness,

  1246. He makes

  1247. a sacrifice.

  1248. In the midst

  1249. of their

  1250. fear, He

  1251. promises that

  1252. one day,

  1253. from Eve,

  1254. a child

  1255. would be

  1256. born that

  1257. would deal

  1258. with Satan

  1259. and sin

  1260. and death

  1261. once and

  1262. for all.

  1263. And to

  1264. their nakedness,

  1265. He gives

  1266. a sacrifice.

  1267. He makes

  1268. a sacrifice

  1269. to cover

  1270. them.

  1271. And He

  1272. gives them

  1273. a picture

  1274. of how

  1275. that conquest

  1276. would happen.

  1277. Another

  1278. would die

  1279. so that

  1280. they could

  1281. be covered,

  1282. so that

  1283. their sin

  1284. and death

  1285. could be

  1286. paid.

  1287. And friends,

  1288. when the

  1289. Lord Jesus

  1290. came and

  1291. when He

  1292. healed the

  1293. sick and

  1294. when He

  1295. raised the

  1296. dead and

  1297. when He

  1298. calmed the

  1299. seas,

  1300. at the

  1301. end of

  1302. His

  1303. perfect

  1304. life,

  1305. He went

  1306. to the

  1307. cross.

  1308. And then

  1309. that ancient

  1310. promise was

  1311. fulfilled and

  1312. the sacrifice

  1313. was made.

  1314. Jesus,

  1315. the Lamb of

  1316. God,

  1317. went into

  1318. the darkness

  1319. of God's

  1320. wrath for

  1321. you.

  1322. He went

  1323. into the

  1324. fullness of

  1325. that wrath,

  1326. except He

  1327. was the one

  1328. human who

  1329. didn't call

  1330. out,

  1331. hide me.

  1332. For you,

  1333. He said,

  1334. take me.

  1335. He didn't

  1336. call for the

  1337. rocks to

  1338. cover Him.

  1339. He was

  1340. torn and

  1341. broken.

  1342. He bore

  1343. it all.

  1344. Why?

  1345. So that

  1346. His death

  1347. might cover

  1348. you.

  1349. So that

  1350. all who

  1351. trust in

  1352. Him in

  1353. this age

  1354. might be

  1355. safe when

  1356. the day of

  1357. perfect justice

  1358. comes.

  1359. How about

  1360. you,

  1361. friend?

  1362. when it

  1363. all comes

  1364. to light,

  1365. when the

  1366. trappings of

  1367. this world

  1368. fall away

  1369. and you

  1370. stand before

  1371. your Creator,

  1372. what will

  1373. be your

  1374. hiding place?

  1375. Take

  1376. Christ

  1377. now.

  1378. Bow

  1379. before Him

  1380. now.

  1381. There's

  1382. coming a

  1383. day when

  1384. every knee

  1385. will bow,

  1386. whether we

  1387. like it

  1388. or not.

  1389. But God

  1390. says,

  1391. bow now,

  1392. take me

  1393. now.

  1394. Come

  1395. find

  1396. shelter,

  1397. Jesus

  1398. says.

  1399. Come

  1400. find

  1401. shelter in

  1402. the Lamb

  1403. who was

  1404. slain for

  1405. you.

  1406. In the

  1407. next chapter,

  1408. chapter 7,

  1409. John will

  1410. talk about

  1411. all the

  1412. blessings that

  1413. come to

  1414. those who

  1415. trust in

  1416. Christ,

  1417. their

  1418. spiritual

  1419. safety and

  1420. security,

  1421. their peace

  1422. and home

  1423. with God,

  1424. their protection

  1425. through all

  1426. the trials

  1427. of this

  1428. life.

  1429. And then

  1430. after that

  1431. interlude of

  1432. chapter 7,

  1433. the vision

  1434. returns to

  1435. the seventh

  1436. and final

  1437. seal.

  1438. You can

  1439. skip ahead

  1440. to chapter

  1441. 8,

  1442. verse 1

  1443. if you

  1444. want to

  1445. see it

  1446. there.

  1447. And when

  1448. that final

  1449. seventh seal

  1450. is opened

  1451. in 8,

  1452. verse 1,

  1453. what happens?

  1454. There's

  1455. silence.

  1456. A perfect,

  1457. silent

  1458. awe.

  1459. Awe and

  1460. reverence

  1461. before a

  1462. holy God,

  1463. just and

  1464. perfect in

  1465. all His

  1466. ways,

  1467. perfect in

  1468. love,

  1469. perfect in

  1470. judgment.

  1471. friend,

  1472. where will

  1473. you be in

  1474. that silence?

  1475. Will you

  1476. be near to

  1477. God in

  1478. love and

  1479. peace,

  1480. having found

  1481. shelter in

  1482. the blood

  1483. of the Lamb?

  1484. Or will

  1485. you be cast

  1486. out from

  1487. God,

  1488. having found

  1489. no shelter

  1490. from the

  1491. wrath of

  1492. the Lamb?

  1493. There's no

  1494. third option.

  1495. The great

  1496. day of God's

  1497. wrath will

  1498. come.

  1499. The Creator

  1500. will give

  1501. His final

  1502. no to

  1503. rebellion and

  1504. idolatry and

  1505. sin.

  1506. He will

  1507. redeem His

  1508. creation.

  1509. He will

  1510. rescue His

  1511. people.

  1512. So don't

  1513. let that day

  1514. find you

  1515. anywhere else

  1516. than in the

  1517. arms of

  1518. Christ,

  1519. who died

  1520. for you.

  1521. Let's pray

  1522. together.

  1523. Father,

  1524. we pause

  1525. in silent

  1526. reverence

  1527. before You.

  1528. Lord,

  1529. we confess

  1530. that we

  1531. don't like

  1532. to think

  1533. about justice

  1534. when it's

  1535. aimed at

  1536. ourselves.

  1537. God,

  1538. we want

  1539. justice for

  1540. the world.

  1541. We want

  1542. to see

  1543. things made

  1544. right and

  1545. healed.

  1546. Lord,

  1547. what hope

  1548. is there

  1549. for the

  1550. world without

  1551. perfect

  1552. justice?

  1553. hope is

  1554. there for

  1555. me when

  1556. it comes?

  1557. Thank You

  1558. that in

  1559. Christ You've

  1560. made a

  1561. provision for

  1562. justice to be

  1563. satisfied and

  1564. for us to be

  1565. forgiven.

  1566. Lord,

  1567. increase our

  1568. love and

  1569. our trust in

  1570. Christ as we

  1571. go forth

  1572. this week.

  1573. in Jesus'

  1574. name,

  1575. amen.
