  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see you all here.

  2. You know, when I moved to Connecticut back in 2003,

  3. one of the selling points of moving to Connecticut was,

  4. I thought, there are no natural disasters here.

  5. I moved from Ithaca, New York, where we had blizzards,

  6. and I thought, we're moving to Connecticut, it's going to be great.

  7. And then, since then, there's been a tornado, a blizzard, a couple hurricanes,

  8. and anyway, so I was sold a bill of goods.

  9. But having said that, I do remember distinctly when we had,

  10. in the early 2011, 12, 13, we had a series of hurricanes that came close.

  11. We didn't really get the full brunt of it,

  12. but we certainly had days where the wind blew and the rain fell

  13. and the power went out, and when you face a storm, what do you do?

  14. You hunker down, right?

  15. You put away your porch furniture.

  16. You make sure the windows are all locked.

  17. You clean your gutters.

  18. You hunker down and try to get through the storm.

  19. And when I moved to Connecticut, I thought, well, maybe I don't have to do that.

  20. But I found out I did.

  21. And so here we are.

  22. As we continue in our series in the book of Revelation this morning,

  23. I wonder if the church has a similar impulse to what we have when a storm comes.

  24. In Revelation, we've been looking at stories,

  25. and last week, Pastor Nick preached on Revelation 8 and 9

  26. about the coming storm of God's judgment against evil in the world,

  27. warning the world that this was coming.

  28. And what is the church going to do in this storm?

  29. Maybe some of you think, well, if I become a Christian,

  30. if I become a part of God's church,

  31. then God's going to protect me through the storm,

  32. and I don't have to go through it.

  33. Maybe I want to be like Noah,

  34. and I want to just get locked up in the ark

  35. and float through the storm and come out the other side

  36. and to somehow just hunker down in my holy huddle

  37. and get through it.

  38. But as we come to chapters 10 and 11 of Revelation this morning,

  39. I think we see a different picture,

  40. a different picture, a different path

  41. for God's people and God's church in the world.

  42. And so that's what we're going to be looking at this morning.

  43. If you want to turn to our text in the Pew Bibles,

  44. it's page 970, Revelation.

  45. We'll be reading it in sections

  46. because we're looking at a big chunk of Scripture this morning.

  47. But the big idea that I want you to see

  48. is that God has called His church

  49. to costly witness to the risen Christ.

  50. This is what we're supposed to be doing

  51. in the middle of the storm, so to speak,

  52. of God's judgment.

  53. This is our calling in this age.

  54. And we're going to see how this all fits together

  55. in these chapters.

  56. We're going to look at three.

  57. For those of you who are taking notes,

  58. here's our outline for today.

  59. God's going to call the witnessing church

  60. to a prophetic role.

  61. That's chapter 10.

  62. God calls the witnessing church

  63. to follow Christ's pattern.

  64. That's going to be chapters 11, 1 through 14.

  65. And then God calls the witnessing church

  66. into reigning with the risen Christ.

  67. And that's chapter 11, verses 15 through 19.

  68. So that's what we're doing this morning.

  69. And just so you can remember a little bit,

  70. because Revelation is an apocalyptic book.

  71. The structure is challenging.

  72. It's a little hard.

  73. So remember, what we're seeing

  74. is this series of visions

  75. about what God is doing now,

  76. leading into the future, right?

  77. And so we had in chapters 6 and 7,

  78. we had seven seals that were broken,

  79. that were symbolic of God's judging action,

  80. leading towards His final judgment.

  81. And in chapters 8 and 9,

  82. we saw seven trumpets being blown.

  83. But in fact, we only saw six of them, right?

  84. And what we have in chapters 10 and 11

  85. is an interlude,

  86. kind of like chapter 7 was an interlude

  87. between the six seals and then the last seal.

  88. So we also have a second interlude

  89. where John gets a different vision, right?

  90. If chapters 8 and 9 is a vision

  91. of the judgment of God on the earth,

  92. that's happening now,

  93. that's ongoing and building

  94. towards a final judgment.

  95. So then this interlude gives us a picture

  96. of what is the church meant to do

  97. during this time.

  98. So that's where we're going.

  99. That's where we are.

  100. We're gonna begin by looking at chapter 10

  101. and seeing that God calls the witnessing church

  102. to a prophetic role.

  103. So with that,

  104. let me pray for God's help

  105. because this is a big passage

  106. and there's lots going on.

  107. And then we're gonna dive in together.

  108. Lord, thank you for this morning

  109. and a chance to look at your word.

  110. And Lord, we thank you

  111. for the richness of your word

  112. and how you express yourself

  113. and your truth

  114. and reveal yourself

  115. through many different ways.

  116. Thank you for the book of Revelation

  117. and its visions

  118. that help us to understand you

  119. and your purposes

  120. in this world more clearly.

  121. Help us, Lord, to understand with our head,

  122. to receive with our heart,

  123. Lord, the truth of your word this morning.

  124. And I pray for your help

  125. that you would help me to speak as I ought.

  126. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  127. Amen.

  128. All right, Revelation chapter 10.

    Revelation 10 chapter mention

  129. Here we go.

  130. Then I saw another mighty angel

  131. coming down from heaven

  132. wrapped in a cloud

  133. with a rainbow over his head

  134. and his face was like the sun

  135. and his legs like pillars of fire.

  136. He had a little scroll open in his hand

  137. and he set his right foot on the sea

  138. and his left foot on the land

  139. and called out with a loud voice

  140. like a lion roaring.

  141. When he called out,

  142. the seven thunders sounded.

  143. And when the seven thunders had sounded,

  144. I was about to write.

  145. But I heard a voice from heaven saying,

  146. seal up what the seven thunders have said

  147. and do not write them down.

  148. And the angel whom I saw

  149. standing on the sea and on the land

  150. raised his right hand to heaven

  151. and swore by him who lives forever and ever,

  152. who created heaven and earth,

  153. who created heaven and what is in it,

  154. the earth and what is in it,

  155. and the sea and what is in it,

  156. that there should, would be no more delay,

  157. but that in the days of the trumpet call

  158. to be sounded by the seventh angel,

  159. the mystery of God would be fulfilled

  160. just as he announced to his servants the prophets.

  161. Then the voice that I heard from heaven

  162. spoke to me again saying,

  163. go, take the scroll that is open

  164. in the hand of the angel

  165. who is standing on the sea and on the land.

  166. So I went to the angel

  167. and told him to give me the little scroll.

  168. And he said to me, take and eat it.

  169. It will make your stomach bitter,

  170. but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.

  171. And I took the little scroll

  172. from the hand of the angel and ate it.

  173. It was sweet as honey in my mouth,

  174. but when I had eaten it,

  175. my stomach was made bitter.

  176. And I was told,

  177. you must again prophesy

  178. about many peoples and nations

  179. and languages and kings.

  180. Okay.

  181. So in the midst of all these visions

  182. about God's judgment

  183. and what God is doing on the earth,

  184. suddenly it gets personal again.

  185. John is the center.

  186. He sees a vision of an angel

  187. with a scroll

  188. and he's speaking with a loud voice.

  189. And all of the imagery around it,

  190. the rainbow and the loud voice like thunder,

  191. is reminiscent actually of what we've seen

  192. in other places of images that refer to God.

  193. And some have suggested

  194. that this might be a manifestation of God,

  195. but I think it's actually more

  196. that this angel is speaking for God.

  197. And so the imagery connected to him

  198. gives him a kind of authority

  199. that he's speaking on behalf of God

  200. as he speaks these things.

  201. He straddles the sea.

  202. He is speaking with a worldwide authority.

  203. And he speaks about the seven thunders.

  204. And friends, I'm just going to tell you,

  205. I'm punting on these.

  206. Verses three through seven are not very clear.

  207. And the commentators are all over the place

  208. in terms of what does it mean

  209. that he spoke something

  210. and then he told John,

  211. don't write it down

  212. and don't let anyone know what it said.

  213. I don't know why that is in there.

  214. So you can come talk to me afterwards

  215. if you have a better idea.

  216. But what we do see near the end

  217. is a little bit of clarity, right?

  218. Because whatever those seven thunders were,

  219. whatever they were speaking,

  220. at the end, the angel says,

  221. here's what I'm going to swear.

  222. To heaven and to earth,

  223. the mystery of God will be completed

  224. and you must prophesy.

  225. What God, the mystery,

  226. not something that nobody could know

  227. that you're trying to figure out,

  228. but what had been unknown in the past,

  229. but now is being revealed,

  230. it is going to be fulfilled

  231. on the last day.

  232. God's plans for the world

  233. will be accomplished.

  234. And we know that that's the arc

  235. or that's the end

  236. of what this first section is about, right?

  237. God told the prophets

  238. what was going to happen.

  239. It will come about.

  240. And this is where we see

  241. then the prophetic role

  242. become really clear

  243. because what the angel is announcing

  244. is what the prophets have announced

  245. and now what John is supposed

  246. to then pick up.

  247. Because in verses 8 through 11,

  248. there's this scroll,

  249. and again, there's lots of conversation.

  250. Is this the same scroll as chapter 5?

  251. I don't actually think so,

  252. but lots of wise people do.

  253. But it seems like it's still

  254. about God's revealing

  255. his plan for the world.

  256. And John receives his scroll

  257. and he's meant to eat it.

  258. Now, if you're a Bible student,

  259. if you've been reading the Bible

  260. for a long time,

  261. then you know that this is reminiscent

  262. of Ezekiel 2 and 3.

  263. For the rest of us

  264. who haven't read Ezekiel recently,

  265. let me remind you and commend to you.

  266. Ezekiel 2 and 3

  267. is about the calling

  268. of the prophet Ezekiel

  269. to proclaim God's word

  270. to unrepentant

  271. and hardened people of God

  272. during his time.

  273. He preached at the end of,

  274. right before and during the exile,

  275. and he knew,

  276. and God told him,

  277. you're going to preach my word

  278. and people are not going to listen to you

  279. and they're going to reject you

  280. because they're rejecting me.

  281. But Ezekiel similarly was told,

  282. eat the scroll

  283. and it will be sweet in your mouth

  284. but bitter in your stomach

  285. because the message is from God.

  286. that's a good God

  287. that has a redemptive purpose

  288. and yet it will make you sick

  289. to your stomach

  290. because you will also know

  291. that the people will reject it

  292. and refuse it.

  293. And John is,

  294. in this image,

  295. being brought into

  296. a similar role

  297. of being the prophet

  298. prophet,

  299. to speak God's words

  300. to the nations,

  301. right?

  302. And it's important

  303. to recognize too,

  304. some of you may think

  305. when we're talking about prophets,

  306. what do prophets do?

  307. Well, they say,

  308. what's going to happen

  309. in the future?

  310. Okay, that's sort of true

  311. to a certain extent

  312. in some ways,

  313. but what a prophet

  314. actually does

  315. is rather than foretell,

  316. they foretell.

  317. That is,

  318. they speak clearly

  319. and make known

  320. God's words

  321. and God's ideas.

  322. And so this is what

  323. John's role is.

  324. He's continuing,

  325. he is called,

  326. like the prophets of old,

  327. to be one who speaks forth

  328. God's word

  329. to the world.

  330. So this is what we see

  331. in chapter 10

  332. is that John's role

  333. is being reinforced.

  334. We saw this in chapter 1,

  335. he's coming back to it

  336. in chapter 10

  337. and this reminds us

  338. that the book of Revelation

  339. is cyclical,

  340. not linear.

  341. This doesn't happen,

  342. I don't believe this vision

  343. necessarily happened

  344. after other things,

  345. but could be contemporaneous

  346. with the very beginning

  347. of the book

  348. in the sense that

  349. this is another vision

  350. affirming,

  351. John, this is your role

  352. in the world,

  353. to prophesy,

  354. to speak God's word

  355. to the world.

  356. So what does this mean

  357. for us?

  358. Before we go on

  359. to chapter 11,

  360. what does this mean

  361. for us as God's people?

  362. First thing I want to say

  363. is we serve a God

  364. who is revealing himself,

  365. who is committed

  366. to making himself known

  367. in the world, right?

  368. He spoke through the prophets

  369. to the people

  370. and to the world

  371. throughout all of

  372. the Old Testament history.

  373. He spoke through Jesus

  374. as Jesus came.

  375. He spoke in Jesus

  376. in a particular way

  377. when he came to earth

  378. to make himself known.

  379. What an incredible joy it is

  380. that we have a God

  381. who wants us to know him

  382. and that our knowledge

  383. of him is not numinous.

  384. It's not like the force

  385. in Star Wars,

  386. but it's particular.

  387. It has content.

  388. It actually has words.

  389. You can just stop for a minute

  390. and think,

  391. why do we have language

  392. and words?

  393. Because God wanted

  394. to be able

  395. to communicate to us.

  396. It's how he made us

  397. so that we can know him.

  398. And these words

  399. of revelation, right,

  400. through Moses and the law,

  401. through the great prophets

  402. from Elijah and Elisha

  403. to Nathan to Isaiah,

  404. Jeremiah, etc.

  405. Our God is a speaking God.

  406. And secondly,

  407. we need to recognize

  408. that the final revelation,

  409. we see this in Hebrews

    Hebrews 1:1

  410. chapter 1, verse 1.

  411. In the times past,

  412. he spoke through various prophets,

  413. but in the last days,

  414. he spoke through his son,

  415. Jesus,

  416. who John called

  417. the Word of God,

  418. made flesh,

  419. and we have beheld his glory

  420. so that we might know God.

  421. This is the pinnacle of God

  422. wanting us to know him

  423. is sending his son,

  424. Jesus,

  425. so that we could see

  426. who he is.

  427. And finally, friends,

  428. we now have this

  429. because the translation

  430. of this speaking God

  431. and revealing God

  432. through the person of Jesus

  433. is now this book,

  434. which is God's words

  435. to us recorded,

  436. written down,

  437. the account of the final

  438. Word of God

  439. in his life

  440. and the implications

  441. of it in the church

  442. throughout the rest

  443. of the New Testament.

  444. So as we think about this,

  445. let us recognize

  446. that God is still speaking

  447. through his Word,

  448. in his Word,

  449. to his people,

  450. and through his people

  451. to one another.

  452. So friends,

  453. let's treasure

  454. the Word of God.

  455. Let us rejoice

  456. in the God

  457. who has made himself known,

  458. and let us be those

  459. who not only receive

  460. God's Word,

  461. but then who turn

  462. and share it with others

  463. so that this would be

  464. part of our understanding

  465. of what God

  466. wants us to do.

  467. This then brings us

  468. to chapter 11,

  469. the first 13 verses

  470. where we see

  471. that God calls us

  472. to be a witnessing church

  473. in the pattern of Christ.

  474. Let's look at

  475. Revelation 11,

    Revelation 11:1

  476. verses 1 through,

  477. actually we'll read

  478. through 1 through 14,

  479. so let's read this together.

  480. Then I was given

  481. a measuring rod

  482. like a staff,

  483. and I was told,

  484. rise and measure

  485. the temple of God

  486. and the altar

  487. and those who worship there.

  488. But do not measure

  489. the court outside the temple,

  490. leave that out,

  491. for it was given

  492. over to the nations,

  493. and they will trample

  494. the holy city

  495. for 42 months,

  496. and I will grant authority

  497. to my witnesses,

  498. and they will prophesy

  499. for 1,260 days

  500. clothed in sackcloth.

  501. These are the two olive trees

  502. and the two lampstands

  503. that stand before

  504. the Lord of the earth,

  505. and if anyone would harm them,

  506. fire pours from their mouth

  507. and consumes their foes.

  508. If anyone would harm them,

  509. this is how he is doomed

  510. to be killed.

  511. They have the power

  512. to shut up the skies

  513. so that no rain may fall

  514. during the days

  515. of their prophesying,

  516. and they have power

  517. over the waters

  518. to turn them into blood

  519. and to strike the earth

  520. with every kind of plague

  521. as often as they desire.

  522. And when they have finished

  523. their testimony,

  524. the beast that rises

  525. from the bottomless pit

  526. will make war on them

  527. and conquer them

  528. and kill them,

  529. and their dead bodies

  530. will lie in the street

  531. of the great city

  532. that symbolically

  533. is called Sodom and Egypt

  534. where their Lord

  535. was crucified.

  536. For three and a half days,

  537. some from the people

  538. and tribes

  539. and languages and nations

  540. will gaze at their dead bodies

  541. and refuse to let them

  542. be placed in a tomb.

  543. And those who dwell

  544. on the earth

  545. will rejoice over them

  546. and make merry

  547. and exchange presents

  548. because these two prophets

  549. had been a torment

  550. to those who dwell

  551. on the earth.

  552. But after three and a half days,

  553. a breath of life

  554. entered,

  555. a breath of life

  556. from God

  557. entered them,

  558. and they stood up

  559. on their feet,

  560. and great fear

  561. fell on those

  562. who saw them.

  563. Then they heard

  564. a loud voice

  565. from heaven

  566. saying,

  567. come up here.

  568. And they went up

  569. to heaven

  570. in a cloud,

  571. and their enemies

  572. watched them.

  573. And at that hour,

  574. there was a great earthquake,

  575. and a tenth of the city

  576. fell,

  577. seven thousand people

  578. were killed

  579. in the earthquake,

  580. and the rest

  581. were terrified

  582. and gave glory

  583. to the God of heaven.

  584. And the second woe

  585. had passed.

  586. Behold,

  587. the third woe

  588. is soon to come.

  589. Okay.

  590. We just dove

  591. into the deep end

  592. of the apocalyptic pool.

  593. This is a vision,

  594. right?

  595. And at the center

  596. of the vision

  597. is two witnesses.

  598. And the main idea

  599. of this passage

  600. is that the church

  601. represented by the two witnesses

  602. is called

  603. to bear witness

  604. to Christ

  605. in the pattern

  606. of Christ,

  607. which will include

  608. suffering,

  609. death,

  610. and resurrection.

  611. Okay?

  612. That's the big picture

  613. of this vision

  614. and of this section.

  615. And what we see

  616. is there's a continuity

  617. with the idea

  618. of prophesy

  619. because you see

  620. in verse 3, 4

  621. that they will prophesy.

  622. Where is it?

  623. I can't find it.

  624. You can look for it

  625. and read it again.

  626. They will prophesy again

  627. and recognize

  628. that there are echoes

  629. of these Old Testament prophets.

  630. Again,

  631. if you've read

  632. your whole Old Testament

  633. recently,

  634. you might pick up

  635. some of these.

  636. Do you remember

  637. the prophet

  638. who called fire down

  639. from heaven

  640. and who spoke

  641. and the sky

  642. was shut up

  643. with rain?

  644. Elijah

  645. in Kings.

  646. So go read

  647. the stories of Elijah

  648. to be reminded of this.

  649. And then remember

  650. the plagues?

  651. Do you remember

  652. who the prophet was

  653. during the plagues?

  654. It was Moses.

  655. Moses who led

  656. the people of God,

  657. who was God's representative

  658. speaking God's words

  659. to the world,

  660. who through,

  661. God brought

  662. these plagues

  663. on Egypt.

  664. And God is saying,

  665. these two witnesses

  666. are going to continue

  667. in the line

  668. of these prophets

  669. in the same role

  670. that the Old Testament

  671. prophets had

  672. of speaking

  673. God's words

  674. to the world.

  675. Right?

  676. And God's words

  677. are always going to be

  678. a message of redemption,

  679. that there is redemption

  680. in Christ

  681. and a calling to Him

  682. and an exalting

  683. of the character of God

  684. which will always have

  685. also the message

  686. of judgment

  687. because those

  688. who reject Him

  689. those who stand

  690. against Him

  691. in all of His goodness

  692. will find themselves

  693. under judgment

  694. eventually.

  695. So this is

  696. the two witnesses.

  697. And I believe

  698. it's the church

  699. partly because we see

  700. in verse 4

  701. that it's the two lamps,

  702. it's two lampstands.

  703. Remember back

  704. in chapter 1,

  705. the lampstands,

  706. there were seven of them

  707. that represented

  708. the churches of God

  709. or the church of God

  710. as a whole.

  711. Why two instead

  712. of seven here?

  713. Well, because

  714. in the Old Testament

  715. and Deuteronomy

  716. and the law,

  717. if you had to establish

  718. something to be true,

  719. you had to do so

  720. with two witnesses

  721. in a courtroom.

  722. And so God calls

  723. His church

  724. as the two witnesses.

  725. So our communal witness

  726. to the person

  727. and work of Christ

  728. and the purposes

  729. of God in the world

  730. as the church

  731. are establishing

  732. the truth of it

  733. for all who have ears

  734. to hear.

  735. So this is the big picture

  736. of what God is doing.

  737. Now what does this testimony

  738. look like?

  739. Well, for one thing,

  740. it has a limited time.

  741. You might have noticed

  742. we got some funky numbers

  743. in this passage, right?

  744. Suddenly there were

  745. 42 months

  746. and, oh no, 42,

  747. yeah, 42 months

  748. and then we had

  749. 1,260 days,

  750. which is actually

  751. the same length of time

  752. if you're doing math.

  753. 42 times 30

  754. is 1,260.

  755. And then you had,

  756. and then we'll see

  757. as we keep going

  758. that this is a number

  759. that comes up

  760. in the next couple

  761. of chapters.

  762. What does this mean?

  763. Well,

  764. the summary of it is

  765. this number represents

  766. three and a half years.

  767. We see it here

  768. in verse 2

  769. and verse 3.

  770. In chapter 12,

  771. it will also,

  772. verse 6,

  773. it'll also talk about

  774. 1260 days.

  775. In chapter 12,

  776. verse 14,

  777. it will use a phrase

  778. time, times,

  779. and half a time.

  780. And you just think,

  781. really?

  782. But yeah,

  783. time plus two times,

  784. that's three

  785. and then a half,

  786. three and a half years.

  787. It's the same

  788. symbolic number

  789. that we see.

  790. And this is drawing

  791. on Daniel

  792. and I'm just gonna say

  793. if you wanna go read

  794. Daniel 7, 9, 12

  795. and put it together,

  796. you'll see there's some

  797. resonances from there.

  798. But the overall picture

  799. in all of the ways

  800. this is used

  801. is that there will be

  802. time of tribulation,

  803. there will be times

  804. of trial,

  805. there will be times

  806. where the church

  807. is undergoing

  808. persecution,

  809. hardship,

  810. suffering,

  811. and at times

  812. experiencing as well

  813. God's provision

  814. through this,

  815. but not ultimate

  816. vindication

  817. or freedom from it.

  818. And the reason

  819. why I think God

  820. uses the word

  821. the three and a half

  822. is because

  823. three and a half

  824. is half of seven.

  825. And seven is the picture

  826. of completeness

  827. that we've seen.

  828. The fullness,

  829. the ultimate fulfillment

  830. are always done

  831. in sevens.

  832. So three and a half

  833. means this is truncated,

  834. it's cut short,

  835. it's limited

  836. rather than expansive.

  837. So,

  838. that's how we read

  839. these numbers.

  840. We get this sense

  841. as well in verse 7

  842. of chapter 11.

  843. You can look with me

  844. there where it says

  845. when the testimony

  846. is finished.

  847. Because here's the thing,

  848. friends,

  849. the testimony

  850. of the church

  851. to a world

  852. that is in rebellion

  853. against Him

  854. and God calling people

  855. to Himself,

  856. that's not going

  857. to last forever.

  858. One day,

  859. the witness

  860. that the church

  861. will have

  862. will be transformed

  863. from witnessing

  864. to people

  865. that don't know God

  866. to simply

  867. worshiping with God

  868. with those

  869. who do forever.

  870. Right?

  871. So we know

  872. that there's a time

  873. that it will come,

  874. a time will come

  875. when our witness

  876. will end.

  877. That might give us

  878. a sense of urgency,

  879. but it also gives us

  880. a sense of hope

  881. because we know

  882. that this witness

  883. will not merely happen

  884. in easy times,

  885. but in fact,

  886. it will happen

  887. through persecution,

  888. through trial,

  889. through opposition.

  890. And in fact,

  891. the word witness,

  892. many of you

  893. probably know this,

  894. but in Greek,

  895. the original language

  896. that this was written,

  897. it's the word martyr.

  898. Right?

  899. And martyr

  900. originally meant witnesses,

  901. but it's taken up

  902. this role

  903. because of the

  904. biblical witness,

  905. this meaning of

  906. someone who dies

  907. for their profession

  908. of faith.

  909. And this is exactly

  910. what we see,

  911. that God has called

  912. his church

  913. to bear witness

  914. even unto death

  915. to the work

  916. of Jesus.

  917. Right?

  918. A beast will rise.

  919. We'll get to the beast

  920. next week.

  921. But a beast will rise

  922. from the depths of hell

  923. and attack

  924. and seemingly

  925. to kill the church.

  926. And it will happen

  927. in a city of darkness

  928. like Sodom

  929. or like Egypt

  930. or like Jerusalem

  931. that's rejected Jesus

  932. and was the place

  933. where he was killed.

  934. And they will have

  935. a party.

  936. Friends,

  937. it's Super Bowl Sunday.

  938. Somebody,

  939. either in San Francisco

  940. or in Kansas City,

  941. is going to throw

  942. a huge party next week

  943. to celebrate a victory.

  944. This is what the world

  945. will do

  946. when they see

  947. the defeat of,

  948. what the seeming

  949. defeat of the church.

  950. When they see

  951. it eradicated,

  952. when it feels like

  953. it's completely

  954. overcome

  955. and disappears,

  956. there will be

  957. a rejoicing

  958. in the church

  959. because

  960. the church's witness,

  961. as it says

  962. in 2 Corinthians 2,

  963. is an aroma

  964. to the whole world.

  965. It is a scent.

  966. But to some,

  967. it is the aroma

  968. of life

  969. to those who receive it

  970. and respond to it

  971. and take it in

  972. and become followers

  973. of Christ

  974. and know the life

  975. that's in him.

  976. But to some,

  977. it is the aroma

  978. of death

  979. because in our

  980. stubborn human hearts

  981. when we reject Jesus

  982. and when we refuse

  983. to submit to God,

  984. we find ourselves

  985. facing his judgment

  986. on our sin

  987. on our own.

  988. And so we recognize

  989. that the world

  990. will hate,

  991. this is why it says

  992. that they were tormented

  993. by the preaching

  994. of the gospel

  995. because it pricked

  996. their conscience

  997. and they hated it.

  998. And this is the world

  999. that we live in.

  1000. And friends,

1001. we need to be careful

  1002. that the things

  1003. that people hate

  1004. about the church

  1005. is the gospel

  1006. and not other things.

  1007. But let us recognize

  1008. that we will never

  1009. be accepted

1010. in the world at large.

1011. We will never be praised

  1012. as the great things

1013. that we want to be

  1014. in the world.

  1015. We will be hated

  1016. and persecuted

  1017. because this is

  1018. what happened to Jesus.

  1019. If they persecuted me,

1020. they will persecute you also.

1021. And this is the pattern

  1022. of our witness then,

  1023. that we witness

1024. in the face of a world

  1025. that ultimately

1026. will want to kill us.

1027. And not all of us

  1028. are going to die

  1029. for our faith,

  1030. though some are

  1031. today in this world.

1032. So what do you think

  1033. about this, friends?

  1034. Church,

  1035. are you ready

  1036. to live your life

  1037. as a martyr?

  1038. Are you ready

  1039. to see how great

  1040. the redeeming work

  1041. of Christ is

  1042. and to identify yourself

  1043. with it publicly,

1044. even if it costs you?

  1045. It might cost you

  1046. the acceptance

  1047. of your friends

  1048. in high school

  1049. who want you

  1050. to live a life

  1051. that's contrary

  1052. to God's plans.

  1053. And you say,

1054. no, I want to live

  1055. for Christ.

  1056. That means I'm going

  1057. to do it differently.

1058. Maybe it's going to mean

  1059. talking about your faith

  1060. in Christ

  1061. on the playground

  1062. with the other parents

  1063. on a Saturday morning.

  1064. Maybe in your workplace.

  1065. Recognizing there's

  1066. appropriate wisdom

1067. in how you do it,

  1068. but to recognize

  1069. people should know

  1070. in your workplace

  1071. that you follow Christ.

  1072. How can you share

  1073. that with them?

  1074. How can you create,

  1075. how can you pray

  1076. and look for God

  1077. to give you opportunities?

  1078. And look,

  1079. I understand it's hard.

  1080. We're in a world today

  1081. where the word Christian

  1082. is confused

  1083. with national

  1084. and political

  1085. and social movements

  1086. and ideologies

1087. that don't have to do

  1088. with the gospel.

1089. And we need to somehow

  1090. clear the wood

1091. and get through all that

1092. so that people can see

1093. that what we really want

  1094. people to know

  1095. is that Jesus loved

  1096. the world such

  1097. that he came

1098. and died for their sins

  1099. so that whoever believes

  1100. in him

  1101. would not perish

  1102. but have everlasting life.

  1103. This is the message

  1104. of the gospel.

1105. Not be more like us

1106. or do the right thing

  1107. but repent.

  1108. Repent and believe

  1109. in the good news

  1110. that in Christ alone

  1111. there is forgiveness

  1112. for our sin

  1113. and true living

  1114. spiritual life.

  1115. This is what God

  1116. has called us to.

  1117. And friends,

  1118. if you're wondering,

1119. I don't know how to do that,

  1120. go read Pastor Nick's

  1121. little blurb

  1122. in our weekly email.

  1123. It was really good.

1124. I'm actually going to read

1125. part of it to you.

  1126. Ready?

  1127. Here we go.

  1128. What sorts of things

  1129. do we naturally share

1130. with our friends and colleagues?

  1131. The things we love,

1132. the things that bring us joy,

  1133. whether it's a favorite

  1134. new recipe,

1135. engaging in an engaging podcast,

  1136. we easily talk about

  1137. and share the things

  1138. that we love.

  1139. And it's the same

  1140. with the gospel.

  1141. Evangelism,

  1142. rightly considered,

1143. is a form of praise.

1144. Praise because we have found

1145. Christ to be so unbelievably good.

  1146. When we experience

1147. the gospel in our own hearts

  1148. and as good news,

  1149. we'll naturally want

1150. to share it with others.

  1151. Friends, if you're struggling

1152. with sharing this with others,

1153. the first step may be

1154. go deeper into the gospel.

  1155. Recognize what great things

1156. God has done for you.

1157. Let that captivate your heart.

1158. And when you do that,

  1159. then you will see

  1160. God will open doors

  1161. because you will want

1162. to talk about the things

1163. that are changing your life.

  1164. So friends,

  1165. God has called us

1166. to be a witnessing church

1167. in the pattern of Christ.

1168. It may cost us great things

1169. to be witnesses for Christ.

  1170. And yet it's exactly

1171. what He's called us to

  1172. because we know

1173. that the end is not the death,

1174. the end is not the trampling,

  1175. the bodies lying

  1176. in Sodom and Egypt,

  1177. but that God came

  1178. in this vision

  1179. and breathed new life

  1180. like a recreation,

1181. like Genesis 2 all over again.

1182. God breathes new life in them

  1183. and they are raised,

1184. not just raised back to life,

  1185. but then raised up

1186. into the throne room of God

1187. to be with heaven forever,

1188. to rule over this world.

  1189. And this is what

  1190. the end of this,

  1191. this is what

1192. the seventh trumpet shows us.

  1193. This is the picture

  1194. that we see

1195. at the end of our passage

  1196. in Revelation 11,

  1197. 15 through 19,

1198. is that the witnessing church

  1199. that's called to be a,

  1200. have a prophetic role

  1201. in the world,

  1202. the witnessing church

  1203. that's meant to follow

1204. in the pattern of Christ

  1205. through suffering and death

  1206. to resurrection

1207. is the same witnessing church

1208. that God calls to reign with him,

  1209. Christ the risen King.

1210. This is the final trumpet.

1211. Let's read this last section together

  1212. as we close,

  1213. as we,

  1214. we're almost done,

  1215. I promise.

  1216. The seventh trumpet,

  1217. Revelation 15,

  1218. or 11, verse 15.

  1219. Then the seventh angel

  1220. blew his trumpet

1221. and there were loud voices

  1222. in heaven saying,

1223. the kingdom of the world

  1224. has become the kingdom

  1225. of our Lord

  1226. and his Christ

  1227. and he shall reign

  1228. forever and ever.

  1229. And the 24 elders

1230. who sit on their thrones

  1231. before God

  1232. fell on their faces

  1233. and worshiped God

  1234. saying,

1235. we give thanks to you,

  1236. Lord God Almighty,

  1237. who was and is,

1238. who is and who was,

  1239. for you have taken

  1240. your great power

  1241. and begun your,

  1242. begun to reign.

  1243. The nations raged,

  1244. but your wrath came.

  1245. And the time

  1246. for the dead

  1247. to be judged

  1248. and for rewarding

  1249. your servants,

  1250. the prophets and saints

  1251. and those who fear

  1252. your name,

  1253. both great,

  1254. small and great,

  1255. and for destroying

  1256. the destroyers

  1257. of the earth.

  1258. And then God's temple

  1259. in heaven was opened

1260. and the ark of his covenant

1261. was seen within his temple.

  1262. There were flashes

  1263. of lightning,

  1264. rumblings,

  1265. peals of thunder

  1266. and earthquake

  1267. and heavy hail.

  1268. friends,

  1269. this is the end

  1270. of the witnessing church

1271. is that Christ will come

1272. and he will judge the world

  1273. and he will destroy

  1274. the destroyers

  1275. and the nations

1276. who rise up against God

  1277. will be no more

  1278. and the believers,

  1279. both great and small,

  1280. will get their reward.

  1281. The prophets

  1282. and the saints

  1283. will receive

  1284. because they will be

  1285. seated with him

  1286. and the kingdoms

  1287. of this world

  1288. will become

  1289. the kingdoms

  1290. of our Lord

  1291. and of his Christ.

  1292. And friends,

  1293. the temple

  1294. will be opened.

  1295. The imagery here

1296. would be a whole other sermon

  1297. but the temple

  1298. will be opened.

1299. We'll see to the very

  1300. inner place,

  1301. the holy of holies

  1302. where the presence

  1303. of God dwelt,

  1304. where the ark was.

  1305. We can walk

  1306. right into there

  1307. because of Jesus

  1308. and have this

  1309. unfettered,

  1310. uncomplicated

  1311. fellowship

  1312. with the risen

  1313. and reigning God

  1314. forever

  1315. and we will be

1316. a part of his kingdom.

  1317. The final sacrifice

  1318. for Christ

1319. has opened the door now

  1320. to the temple

  1321. and when Christ returns

  1322. and defeats

  1323. all of his enemies

  1324. and we will see

  1325. this building,

  1326. this vision

  1327. of that victory

  1328. through the rest

  1329. of Revelation,

  1330. right,

  1331. we will reign

  1332. with him forever.

  1333. Friends,

  1334. can you imagine

  1335. what good news

  1336. this was

  1337. to the church

  1338. in Rome

  1339. in the first century

  1340. suffering persecution?

  1341. that those who suffered

  1342. under Diocletian

  1343. and Domitian

  1344. will reign

  1345. with Christ.

  1346. That those

  1347. who suffered

  1348. in France

  1349. under the Huguenot

  1350. persecution

  1351. during the

  1352. Protestant Reformation,

  1353. they will be there.

  1354. That believers

  1355. who died

  1356. at the hands

  1357. of Chairman Mao's

  1358. Red Guard

  1359. because they claimed

  1360. the name of Christ

  1361. and witnessed to him.

  1362. They will be there.

  1363. And those today

  1364. who are dying

1365. for the name of Christ,

  1366. whether it be

  1367. in Central Asia

  1368. or Myanmar

  1369. or Saudi Arabia

  1370. or Sudan,

  1371. friends,

  1372. they will be reigning

  1373. with Christ

  1374. forever and eternity.

  1375. and they will have

  1376. the joy.

  1377. And this is why

  1378. God calls us

  1379. to be the witnessing

  1380. church now

  1381. unto death

  1382. because Christ

  1383. is worth it

  1384. and because God

  1385. is still at work

  1386. calling people

  1387. out of darkness

  1388. into light.

  1389. God is still

  1390. calling us

  1391. not to hunker down

  1392. and just try

  1393. to get through

  1394. to heaven

  1395. but to stand up

  1396. and to go out

  1397. and to proclaim

  1398. that Christ

  1399. has come

  1400. to save the world

  1401. and to testify

  1402. and bear witness

  1403. to his work

  1404. so that we might

  1405. together sing

  1406. for the Lord

  1407. God

  1408. omnipotent

  1409. reigneth.

  1410. Hallelujah.

  1411. Hallelujah.

  1412. The kingdoms

  1413. of this world

  1414. is become

  1415. the kingdom

  1416. of our Lord

  1417. and of his Christ

  1418. and I'm about

  1419. to break out

  1420. into song

  1421. because you know this

  1422. shall reign

  1423. forever

  1424. and ever

  1425. King of kings

  1426. and Lord

  1427. of lords

  1428. forever

  1429. and ever.

  1430. Hallelujah.

  1431. Let's pray.

  1432. Lord,

  1433. thank you

  1434. for this

  1435. great vision

  1436. and this

  1437. great call

  1438. and Lord

  1439. we ask

  1440. for your forgiveness

  1441. for we so often

  1442. love comfort

  1443. and the love

  1444. and praise

  1445. of our fellow man

  1446. more than we love

  1447. to bear witness

1448. to how great you are.

  1449. Oh Lord,

1450. may you be our joy

  1451. so that we might

  1452. overflow

  1453. with the good news

  1454. of the gospel.

  1455. Help us, Lord,

  1456. to be this kind

  1457. of church

  1458. we pray

  1459. in Jesus' name.

  1460. Amen.
