  1. Well, good morning, church. Would you turn with me to Revelation chapter 12?

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  2. That's page 971 in the Pew Bible, if you want to follow along there, Revelation chapter 12.

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  3. So we've come to the middle of this great and bracing book of Revelation.

  4. And here, at the midway point, I think it's good to remind ourselves that

  5. Revelation was written to everyday churches a lot like our own.

  6. Churches trying to live faithfully for the Lord Jesus, but beset by many challenges and trials.

  7. You can go back and read chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation and learn more about the churches to whom John was writing.

  8. Some of them faced persecution. Some of them faced false teaching and deception.

  9. And others faced what we might call seduction.

  10. The world around them had captivated their hearts and led them away from an earnest devotion to Jesus.

  11. And I think it's easy in the middle of everyday life, as we kind of grind it out day by day,

  12. it's easy to lose sight of the big story.

  13. It's easy to miss the deeper realities at work.

  14. And part of what Revelation is meant to do is to give us that fresh perspective,

  15. to pull back the curtain on spiritual reality,

  16. and to show us the deeper realities at work,

  17. so that we can live in line with what's really real.

  18. Revelation, in a sense, is meant to kind of break through the narratives that the world tells about who we are

  19. and where we are,

  20. and show us the deeper spiritual reality by which we can live really authentic and faithful lives to God.

  21. And that's what John's going to be doing in the next few chapters, chapters 12, 13, and 14.

  22. He's going to be really pulling back the curtain to help us see spiritual reality for what it is.

  23. So, let's pick up this middle portion of the book of Revelation in chapter 12.

  24. I'm going to read the whole chapter for us.

  25. John writes this.

  26. He says,

  27. And another sign appeared in heaven.

  28. She gave birth to a male child,

  29. one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron.

  30. But her child was caught up to God and to his throne.

  31. And the woman fled into the wilderness,

  32. where she has a place prepared by God,

  33. in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.

  34. Now, war arose in heaven,

  35. Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon.

  36. And the dragon and his angels fought back.

  37. But he was defeated,

  38. and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.

  39. And the great dragon was thrown down,

  40. that ancient serpent who is called the devil and Satan,

  41. the deceiver of the whole world.

  42. He was thrown down to the earth,

  43. and his angels were thrown down with him.

  44. And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying,

  45. Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God

  46. and the authority of his Christ have come.

  47. For the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down,

  48. who accuses them day and night before our God.

  49. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb

  50. and by the word of their testimony,

  51. for they loved not their lives, even unto death.

  52. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, in you who dwell in them.

  53. But woe to you, O earth and sea,

  54. for the devil has come down to you in great wrath,

  55. because he knows that his time is short.

  56. And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to earth,

  57. he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.

  58. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle

  59. so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness,

  60. to the place where she is to be nourished for a time

  61. and times and half a time.

  62. The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth

  63. after the woman to sweep her away with a flood.

  64. But the earth came to the help of the woman,

  65. and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river

  66. that the dragon had poured from his mouth.

  67. Then the dragon became furious with the woman

  68. and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring

  69. and on those who keep the commandments of God

  70. and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

  71. So we'll pause there because the rest of verse 17

  72. actually introduces the next chapter,

  73. which we'll get to next week.

  74. Okay, so John, using deeply symbolic language,

  75. is pulling back the curtain on reality

  76. to help us see what's really real,

  77. to help us know the story in which we live our lives.

  78. And if we were to sum it up,

  79. one way to do so would be like this.

  80. Chapter 12 is telling us

  81. that you are in a war,

  82. that the victory has been secured,

  83. but that the battle still rages on.

  84. You are in a war,

  85. the victory has been secured,

  86. but the battle still rages on.

  87. So the first paragraph, verses 1 through 6,

  88. show us the first point.

  89. You are in a war.

  90. John introduces us here

  91. to the three main figures of this passage,

  92. a woman, a child, and a dragon.

  93. Let's consider briefly kind of each one.

  94. The woman is said to be clothed with the sun,

  95. with the moon under her feet,

  96. and on her head a crown of 12 stars.

  97. Now, the 12 stars is an immediate hint

  98. as to who this woman represents.

  99. In the Old Testament, the number 12

  100. almost always alludes to the 12 tribes of Israel.

  101. In fact, this particular image of sun, moon, and stars

  102. seems to be an allusion to the book of Genesis.

  103. If you remember the story of Joseph

  104. in the book of Genesis,

  105. Joseph has a dream, right, in Genesis 37.

  106. And one of his dreams is of the sun, the moon,

  107. and 11 stars, him being the 12th,

  108. bowing down to him.

  109. And what do the sun, moon, and stars there represent

  110. in Joseph's dream?

  111. Well, they represent Joseph's father and mother and brothers.

  112. In other words, they represent the people of Israel,

  113. God's covenant family in the Old Testament era.

  114. So this woman then represents God's people.

  115. And we see that this woman is pregnant

  116. and crying out in birth pains

  117. and the agony of giving birth.

  118. It's interesting that the word agony there

  119. is almost always used not actually

  120. in relation to giving birth,

  121. but for the suffering of God's people

  122. in persecution and trial.

  123. So what's the picture then?

  124. The picture is that this woman is an image

  125. of God's Old Testament people

  126. in trial and hardship,

  127. waiting for a child to be born.

  128. And so we come to the second character, the child.

  129. And who is this child?

  130. Verse 5 says,

  131. She gave birth to a male child,

  132. one who is to rule all the nations

  133. with a rod of iron.

  134. Now, this is a very clear reference

  135. to the Messiah,

  136. the one who would come from Israel

  137. and rule all nations.

  138. The rod of iron is an obvious literary allusion

  139. to Psalm 2,

  140. that great messianic psalm

  141. about when God installs his king,

  142. his son on his royal throne in Zion,

  143. and all the nations become his inheritance,

  144. and he rules them with a rod of iron.

  145. And if you look ahead in Revelation

  146. to chapter 19, verse 15,

  147. we see there that there's no question for John

  148. who this Messiah is.

  149. Who is it that wields this rod of iron,

  150. that is this shepherd's staff

  151. of unbreakable strength?

  152. Well, in Revelation 19, 15,

  153. it's clearly the Lord Jesus

  154. who will one day return in power

  155. and before whom every knee will bow.

  156. And so, with this vision of a woman

  157. and her child,

  158. John is bringing before our view

  159. the great story of the Old Testament,

  160. that from Eve, the mother of all living,

  161. all the way to Mary, the mother of Jesus,

  162. the people of God have survived

  163. through many trials awaiting the coming of the king.

  164. And at last, in the person of Jesus,

  165. he came.

  166. But there's a third figure here,

  167. the dragon.

  168. Now, looking ahead to verse 9,

  169. we see exactly who this dragon represents.

  170. John says it's that ancient serpent,

  171. hearkening back to Genesis 3,

  172. who is called the devil and Satan,

  173. the deceiver of the whole world.

  174. And the dragon here is depicted

  175. as having seven heads and ten horns

  176. and seven diadems,

  177. that is, seven crowns.

  178. And of course, it's, you know,

  179. that sort of fearsome image.

  180. It's a picture, on the one hand,

  181. of ferocity, right?

  182. A seven-headed beast would be

  183. the fullness of terror.

  184. And it's also a picture,

  185. not just of ferocity,

  186. but of power, right?

  187. Horns are a classic image

  188. of power and strength

  189. in the Old Testament.

  190. And here, this dragon has ten of them.

  191. So it's ferocious,

  192. it's powerful,

  193. and it's also a picture of blasphemy.

  194. Only God is truly worthy

  195. to be crowned.

  196. And yet, this dragon usurps a crown

  197. for each of its heads.

  198. And we're told that this dragon

  199. stood before the woman,

  200. actively seeking to devour the child.

  201. I mean, consider, if you will,

  202. the history of the Old Testament

  203. people of God

  204. from the murder of Abraham,

  205. or excuse me,

  206. from the murder of Abel,

  207. right after they're banished

  208. from the garden,

  209. the murder of Abel,

  210. to the machinations

  211. of Pharaoh in Egypt,

  212. to Saul's murderous pursuit

  213. of David,

  214. to Haman's edict

  215. to murder the Jews

  216. in the book of Ruth,

  217. to the persecutions

  218. perpetrated by Antiochus Epiphanes

  219. that's foretold

  220. in the book of Daniel,

  221. even to the raging of Herod

  222. as he seeks to massacre

  223. the children of Bethlehem.

  224. Who or what was at work?

  225. It was that ancient serpent,

  226. the deceiver of the whole world,

  227. seeking to devour

  228. the child of the woman.

  229. We're told in verse 4

  230. that his tail swept down

  231. a third of the stars of heaven

  232. and cast them to the earth.

  233. Now, this could be referring

  234. to fallen angels

  235. who joined Satan

  236. in his primordial rebellion

  237. against God,

  238. but it's just as likely

  239. that this verse

  240. is an allusion

  241. to the book of Daniel,

    Daniel 8:10

  242. chapter 8, verse 10.

  243. In Daniel, chapter 8, verse 10,

    Daniel 8:10

  244. the murder of God's people

  245. by Antiochus Epiphanes

  246. is likened to stars

  247. being thrown down

  248. and trampled.

  249. Those stars that adorn

  250. the head of the woman,

  251. those stars that God loves

  252. and cherishes,

  253. it's Satan's desire

  254. to persecute

  255. and destroy them

  256. if only he might devour

  257. the child to come.

  258. And why is the dragon

  259. so bent on pursuing this woman

  260. and devouring this child?

  261. Because he knows

  262. that this child

  263. is the center of God's plan

  264. to bring about his defeat

  265. and to put an end

  266. to all his forces of sin

  267. and death and destruction

  268. once and for all.

  269. The promise goes all the way back

  270. to the Garden of Eden.

  271. Do you remember

  272. the promise given

  273. in Genesis 3, 15?

  274. We read it earlier

  275. in the service.

  276. To the serpent, God says,

  277. I'll put enmity

  278. between you and the woman,

  279. between your offspring

  280. and her offspring.

  281. He shall bruise your head

  282. and you shall bruise his heel.

  283. Yes, the serpent would strike

  284. the heel of the offspring of Eve,

  285. but the child would in turn

  286. crush the serpent's head.

  287. And from this first glimmer

  288. of the gospel

  289. before the very gates of Eden,

  290. the rest of the Old Testament story

  291. begins to grow.

  292. Looking, waiting, hoping

  293. through great trial and suffering

  294. for the offspring,

  295. for the child,

  296. for the king to come.

  297. Waiting, hoping,

  298. until

  299. when the fullness of time

  300. had come.

  301. God sent an angel

  302. to a virgin named Mary

  303. and through Mary

  304. the promise made to Eve

  305. was finally fulfilled.

  306. The long years of travail

  307. had come to their greatest hour

  308. and the king was born.

  309. And was this king

  310. devoured by the dragon?

  311. No, John says.

  312. Her child was caught up to God

  313. and to his throne.

  314. It's a pretty short summary

  315. of the life of Jesus,

  316. isn't it?

  317. But it puts our focus

  318. in the right place

  319. for the reality

  320. that John wants us to see.

  321. Jesus was caught up to God.

  322. The verb means

  323. taken up forcefully.

  324. Though Satan thought

  325. he had won,

  326. crucifying Jesus,

  327. putting him to death,

  328. the resurrection forcefully

  329. broke through

  330. Satan's supposed victory

  331. as the Messiah

  332. was caught up from death

  333. and brought to God.

  334. And brought to God

  335. and his throne

  336. in the ascension of Jesus.

  337. He was enthroned

  338. taking his rightful place

  339. at the Father's right hand.

  340. So what are we meant

  341. to take away then

  342. from this first paragraph?

  343. Well, John's kind of

  344. pulling back the curtain

  345. and showing us

  346. that the story we live in,

  347. the world we live in,

  348. is a world in the midst of war.

  349. It's not ultimately

  350. a physical war

  351. between nation states.

  352. It's a spiritual war.

  353. There's an enemy

  354. of the people of God

  355. and of the kingdom of God.

  356. And he'll do whatever he can

  357. to thwart and devour

  358. the people of this king.

  359. And friend,

  360. if you've placed your faith

  361. in Jesus,

  362. then you are

  363. in this company of saints

  364. represented by this woman.

  365. Paul says in Galatians 3

  366. very clearly,

  367. it's those who have faith

  368. in Jesus

  369. who are the sons of Abraham.

  370. Whether you're Jew

  371. or Gentile,

  372. if you believe in Jesus

  373. as the Messiah,

  374. then you too

  375. are part of God's covenant family.

  376. You too are her offspring,

  377. as verse 17

  378. later in our passage says.

  379. And that means

  380. you woke up this morning

  381. in the middle of a great war.

  382. As you were making your coffee,

  383. as you were listening to the news,

  384. as you were flipping

  385. through Instagram,

  386. whatever you do in the morning,

  387. I don't know.

  388. You woke up in the middle of a war.

  389. Imagine John's first readers,

  390. you know,

  391. picture perhaps

  392. the church at Laodicea

  393. at the end of chapter 3.

  394. One of those original recipients

  395. of this long letter

  396. we call Revelation.

  397. You know,

  398. the typical Christian

  399. at Laodicea,

  400. we're told,

  401. would wake up

  402. and, you know,

  403. they'd be tempted to say,

  404. I'm rich,

  405. I've prospered,

  406. I sort of need nothing.

  407. They could go about their day

  408. and their greatest concern

  409. was how they looked

  410. to their friends

  411. in the marketplace.

  412. How similar we are today

  413. to the church of Laodicea.

  414. But John is saying,

  415. open your eyes,

  416. shake off your complacency.

  417. It may seem like

  418. all is well in your world.

  419. You may be tempted

  420. to just drift through your days,

  421. chasing the world's prizes

  422. and favors,

  423. but don't you see

  424. you're in a war?

  425. Shake off your lethargy.

  426. Stop hunting

  427. for the latest gadget

  428. that will entertain you

  429. out of your boredom.

  430. Stop living

  431. as if your life

  432. is just a series

  433. of promotions

  434. until you can

  435. comfortably retire.

  436. Those are stories

  437. that the world

  438. wants to tell you,

  439. but that's not

  440. the real story.

  441. You see,

  442. one of the greatest tactics

  443. of our enemy

  444. is to convince us

  445. that there really isn't

  446. a spiritual battle

  447. going on.

  448. And then we can simply

  449. drift through life,

  450. neither hot nor cold,

  451. imagining that we're

  452. just sort of neutral.

  453. But there is no neutral ground,

  454. not in the spiritual war.

  455. Either our allegiance

  456. is given to the child king

  457. and he commands our steps,

  458. or we remain

  459. under the sway

  460. of the dragon.

  461. Of course,

  462. on the surface

  463. it doesn't look that way.

  464. And yes,

  465. it is true

  466. that in this life

  467. every human heart

  468. and every human institution

  469. will always be a mix

  470. of common grace

  471. and of rejection

  472. of God,

  473. both at the same time.

  474. But at the deepest level,

  475. where is your allegiance?

  476. There's a war going on

  477. for your very soul,

  478. and there's a war going on

  479. for the very heart

  480. of every person

  481. you and I meet,

  482. and there's a very real enemy

  483. who seeks to devour.

  484. But you know,

  485. lest our vigilance

  486. and our alertness

  487. give way to fear

  488. and panic,

  489. John's shows us

  490. the second part

  491. of this vision.

  492. In the second paragraph,

  493. verses 7 through 12,

  494. we see not just

  495. that we're in a war,

  496. but that the victory

  497. has been secured.

  498. The victory has been secured.

  499. Verse 7 begins

  500. by describing

  501. a war in heaven.

  502. And at first,

  503. we might think

  504. that this speaks

  505. of that original fall

  506. of Satan

  507. and his primordial rebellion

  508. against God,

  509. but you know,

  510. as we read more carefully,

  511. we realize

  512. that what's being described

  513. here is not the fall

  514. of Satan

  515. at the time of creation,

  516. but the defeat of Satan

  517. in the crucifixion,

  518. resurrection,

  519. and ascension of Jesus.

  520. Verses 10 and 11

  521. make this clear.

  522. And I heard a loud voice

  523. in heaven saying,

  524. Now the salvation

  525. and the power

  526. and the kingdom

  527. of our God

  528. and the authority

  529. of his Christ

  530. have come.

  531. For the accuser

  532. of our brothers

  533. has been thrown down,

  534. who accuses them

  535. day and night

  536. before our God,

  537. and they have conquered him

  538. by the blood of the Lamb

  539. and by the word

  540. of their testimony,

  541. for they love not their lives,

  542. even unto death.

  543. So we see that

  544. this war in heaven

  545. is something that ensues

  546. because Jesus has triumphed

  547. through his earthly ministry.

  548. He shed his blood

  549. for sins.

  550. He's taken the place

  551. of authority

  552. at God's right hand

  553. in his resurrection

  554. and ascension.

  555. And because of what

  556. Jesus has done,

  557. now Satan no longer

  558. has a rightful place

  559. in heaven

  560. to stand and accuse

  561. the people of God.

  562. So we're told

  563. that Michael,

  564. Michael who in the book

  565. of Daniel

  566. is depicted

  567. as sort of an angelic

  568. protector of God's people.

  569. So Michael

  570. and the other angels

  571. now ensuing

  572. on Jesus' triumph,

  573. they drive Satan

  574. out of heaven.

  575. We see this same idea

  576. actually in other places

  577. of the New Testament.

  578. Consider John chapter 12

    John 12:31–32

  579. verses 31 through 32.

  580. Jesus is on the verge

  581. of going to the cross

  582. and he says,

  583. now is the judgment

  584. of this world.

  585. Now will the ruler

  586. of this world

  587. be cast out

  588. and I when I am lifted up

  589. will draw all people

  590. to myself.

  591. So there Jesus looks ahead

  592. to his own passion

  593. to the cross

  594. and resurrection

  595. saying that Satan's

  596. going to be cast out

  597. because of what

  598. I'm about to do.

  599. Or think about

  600. Colossians 2.15

  601. where Paul says,

  602. God disarmed

  603. the rulers and authorities

  604. and he means

  605. the heavenly demonic

  606. rulers and authorities.

  607. God disarmed

  608. the rulers and authorities

  609. and put them

  610. to open shame.

  611. How?

  612. By triumphing over them

  613. in him,

  614. Colossians says,

  615. meaning in Christ crucified.

  616. Or we might also

  617. go on to Hebrews chapter 2

    Hebrews 2:14–15

  618. verses 14 through 15.

  619. Since therefore

  620. the children share

  621. in flesh and blood,

  622. Jesus himself likewise

  623. partook of the same things.

  624. He became flesh and blood

  625. for us.

  626. Why?

  627. That through death

  628. he might destroy

  629. the one who has

  630. the power of death,

  631. that is the devil,

  632. and deliver all those

  633. who through fear of death

  634. were subject

  635. to lifelong slavery.

  636. But now we might

  637. ask a question.

  638. How?

  639. How does the death

  640. and resurrection

  641. of Jesus

  642. defeat Satan

  643. and cast him down

  644. from heaven?

  645. What's the connection?

  646. How does that win

  647. the ultimate victory?

  648. Well, the answer

  649. to that is found

  650. in that word

  651. accuser.

  652. Verse 10,

  653. the accuser

  654. of our brothers

  655. has been thrown down

  656. who accuses them

  657. day and night

  658. before our God.

  659. You see, friends,

  660. before Christ came,

  661. Satan actually had a right

  662. to stand in heaven

  663. before God's throne

  664. and accuse God's people

  665. of their guilt and sin.

  666. And we actually see this

  667. depicted in Job

    Job 1 chapter mention

  668. chapters 1 and 2

  669. and we see it again

  670. in the book of Zechariah

    Zechariah 3 chapter mention

  671. chapter 3.

  672. Satan stands in heaven

  673. and brings his charges

  674. against God's people.

  675. In fact,

  676. that's what the name

  677. Satan literally means,

  678. the accuser.

  679. And the truth is,

  680. his accusations

  681. are just.

  682. After all,

  683. who among us

  684. has not sinned

  685. against God?

  686. Who among us

  687. does not truly

  688. deserve death

  689. as the penalty

  690. for their heart's rebellion

  691. against our Creator?

  692. The accuser

  693. makes his case.

  694. And friends,

  695. the tragedy is

  696. against all of us,

  697. that case is airtight.

  698. We stand condemned.

  699. Unless,

  700. unless,

  701. there could be one

  702. to stand in our place.

  703. One who could represent us

  704. before the throne.

  705. One who could enter

  706. the heavenly courtroom,

  707. sit down in the dock

  708. where we sit accused

  709. and guilty and say,

  710. I'll pay their penalty.

  711. I will let the sentence

  712. fall on me.

  713. And this is exactly

  714. what Christ has done.

  715. The same passage

  716. from Colossians 2

  717. that speaks of Christ

  718. defeating Satan

  719. at the cross

  720. explains how he's done it.

  721. Paul writes in Colossians 2,

  722. 13 through 14,

  723. and you

  724. who were dead

  725. in your trespasses.

  726. God made alive

  727. together with him,

  728. having forgiven

  729. all of our trespasses.

  730. How?

  731. By canceling

  732. the record of debt

  733. that stood against us

  734. with its legal demands.

  735. This he set aside,

  736. nailing it

  737. to the cross.

  738. Every accusation

  739. that Satan

  740. could make

  741. against you and I,

  742. every sin,

  743. past,

  744. present,

  745. and future,

  746. the record of debt

  747. with its legal demands,

  748. every single sentence

  749. of guilt and condemnation

  750. that you rightly deserve

  751. has been nailed

  752. to the cross,

  753. Paul says.

  754. As the hammers

  755. drove the nails

  756. through the hands

  757. and feet of Jesus,

  758. your sins

  759. were being pinned

  760. to the sinless one.

  761. The just sentence

  762. of death

  763. was being paid

  764. for each one.

  765. Why?

  766. So that you could

  767. stand before

  768. the throne of God

  769. completely innocent

  770. and free.

  771. And so that the voice

  772. of the accuser

  773. might have no right

  774. any longer

  775. to speak.

  776. This is why

  777. Paul can say

  778. in Romans 8,

  779. no one can bring

  780. a charge

  781. against God's elect.

  782. Not even angels

  783. or principalities

  784. or powers.

  785. Nothing can now

  786. separate us

  787. from the love of God

  788. in Christ Jesus

  789. our Lord.

  790. And so because

  791. of the love of Christ

  792. and his work

  793. on the cross

  794. for you and me,

  795. the devil's been

  796. thrown down,

  797. cast from the

  798. heavenly courtroom

  799. with no place

  800. to stand.

  801. But of course,

  802. the dragon still

  803. tries this tactic

  804. today,

  805. doesn't he?

  806. He will still

  807. come to you

  808. and show you

  809. your sins

  810. and failings.

  811. And he will say,

  812. a real Christian

  813. wouldn't do

  814. something like that.

  815. God could never

  816. accept you.

  817. You're worthless.

  818. You're lost.

  819. Just give up.

  820. You've tried so hard

  821. to follow God.

  822. His rules are so impossible.

  823. What's the point

  824. of even trying?

  825. Accusation,

  826. accusation,

  827. accusation.

  828. Are you able,

  829. Christian,

  830. to recognize

  831. the voice

  832. of the accuser?

  833. The voice

  834. of the Holy Spirit

  835. convicting you

  836. of sin

  837. will bring you

  838. to life

  839. and freedom

  840. at the cross.

  841. The voice

  842. of the accuser

  843. will drive you

  844. away,

  845. miring you

  846. in guilt

  847. and shame.

  848. Friends,

  849. he has been

  850. cast down

  851. and that's

  852. what he'll

  853. try to do,

  854. cast you down.

  855. Get you

  856. to think

  857. that your

  858. forgiveness

  859. is conditional.

  860. Try to get you

  861. to think

  862. that God's

  863. love for you

  864. is based

  865. on your

  866. performance,

  867. that God's

  868. acceptance of you

  869. is based

  870. on your

  871. efforts

  872. and your

  873. achievements.

  874. But friends,

  875. that's not

  876. the gospel.

  877. Christianity

  878. is not

  879. be a good

  880. person

  881. so that God

  882. will forgive

  883. and accept

  884. you.

  885. Satan

  886. would love

  887. you to think

  888. that that's

  889. the message

  890. of Christianity,

  891. but it's

  892. not.

  893. The message

  894. of Christianity

  895. is this,

  896. you could

  897. never be good

  898. enough.

  899. you've

  900. sinned

  901. and fallen

  902. short of

  903. the glory

  904. of God.

  905. The wages

  906. of sin

  907. is death,

  908. but God

  909. loves you

  910. and sent

  911. his son

  912. to die

  913. in your

  914. place

  915. for your

  916. sin

  917. so that

  918. you can

  919. be accepted

  920. because of

  921. his work

  922. and not

  923. your own.

  924. The song

  925. we sang

  926. earlier

  927. I think

  928. says it

  929. pretty well.

  930. Before

  931. the throne

  932. of God

  933. above

  934. I have

  935. a strong

  936. and perfect

  937. plea,

  938. a great

  939. high priest

  940. whose name

  941. is love.

  942. Whoever lives

  943. and pleads

  944. for me,

  945. my name

  946. is graven

  947. on his hands.

  948. My name

  949. is written

  950. on his heart.

  951. I know

  952. that while

  953. in heaven

  954. he stands,

  955. no tongue

  956. can bid

  957. me thence

  958. to part.

  959. When Satan

  960. tempts me

  961. to despair

  962. and tells

  963. me of the

  964. guilt within,

  965. upward

  966. I look

  967. and see

  968. him there

  969. who made

  970. an end

  971. to all

  972. my sin.

  973. Because

  974. the sinless

  975. Savior died,

  976. my sinful

  977. soul is

  978. counted free

  979. for God

  980. the just

  981. is satisfied

  982. to look

  983. on him

  984. Jesus

  985. and pardon

  986. me.

  987. You're in a war

  988. brothers and

  989. sisters but

  990. the victory

  991. has ultimately

  992. been won.

  993. Let not

  994. the voice

  995. of the accuser

  996. bring you

  997. to guilt

  998. and despair.

  999. He has

  1000. been cast

  1001. down.

  1002. That's the

  1003. second point

  1004. of our

  1005. passage.

  1006. But now

  1007. lest we think

  1008. that the battle

  1009. is simply

  1010. over

  1011. and that's

  1012. all that

  1013. there is

  1014. to say.

  1015. John

  1016. gives us

  1017. one more

  1018. piece of

  1019. the story.

  1020. In the

  1021. third paragraph

  1022. verses 13

  1023. through 17

  1024. we see

  1025. that even

  1026. though the

  1027. decisive

  1028. victory

  1029. has been

  1030. won,

  1031. the battle

  1032. still rages

  1033. on.

  1034. This battle

  1035. still rages

  1036. on.

  1037. I think

  1038. the analogy

  1039. of World

  1040. War II

  1041. has often

  1042. been used

  1043. to describe

  1044. the spiritual

  1045. reality

  1046. and I think

  1047. it's a

  1048. helpful one.

  1049. You know

  1050. when the

  1051. allied forces

  1052. landed at

  1053. Normandy

  1054. and gained

  1055. a foothold

  1056. on the

  1057. continent

  1058. it was a

  1059. sign that

  1060. the tide

  1061. had turned

  1062. and the

  1063. Axis powers

  1064. would eventually

  1065. fall.

  1066. But you

  1067. know

  1068. from D-Day

  1069. to victory

  1070. in Europe

  1071. there were

  1072. still 11

  1073. long months

  1074. right?

  1075. Or at least

  1076. that's what I

  1077. remember from

  1078. history class.

  1079. And you

  1080. know

  1081. that's a bit

  1082. of what we

  1083. see here.

  1084. Satan

  1085. is cast

  1086. down from

  1087. heaven.

  1088. His

  1089. accusations

  1090. are now

  1091. finished

  1092. but on

  1093. earth

  1094. he still

  1095. fights to

  1096. devour

  1097. as many

  1098. as he

  1099. can

  1100. knowing

  1101. that his

  1102. time is

  1103. short.

  1104. John

  1105. sees the

  1106. dragon's

  1107. attacks

  1108. flowing like

  1109. a river

  1110. issuing from

  1111. his mouth

  1112. trying to

  1113. sweep away

  1114. the people

  1115. of God

  1116. in its

  1117. flood.

  1118. And indeed

  1119. when you

  1120. read church

  1121. history you

  1122. will see

  1123. that there

  1124. has been

  1125. a flood

  1126. of persecutions

  1127. of false

  1128. teachings

  1129. of seasons

  1130. of complacency

  1131. and compromise

  1132. that have

  1133. nearly drowned

  1134. the church.

  1135. Given that

  1136. this flood

  1137. issues from

  1138. the mouth

  1139. of the

  1140. dragon

  1141. this vision

  1142. might be

  1143. particularly

  1144. speaking of

  1145. the false

  1146. teaching

  1147. and deception

  1148. that the

  1149. devil has

  1150. constantly

  1151. tried to

  1152. use against

  1153. the church.

  1154. It's as if

  1155. his accusations

  1156. have been

  1157. foiled by

  1158. the work

  1159. of Christ

  1160. then he

  1161. will try

  1162. to use

  1163. his deceptions

  1164. to keep

  1165. as many

  1166. people away

  1167. from the

  1168. finished work

  1169. of the gospel

  1170. as possible.

  1171. And so

  1172. church history

  1173. tells us

  1174. of a river

  1175. of heresies

  1176. and false

  1177. teachings that

  1178. have run

  1179. through the

  1180. church.

  1181. Some denying

  1182. the full

  1183. deity of

  1184. Christ.

  1185. Some denying

  1186. the full

  1187. humanity of

  1188. Christ.

  1189. Some denying

  1190. the free

  1191. grace of

  1192. God.

  1193. Some denying

  1194. the sufficiency

  1195. and authority

  1196. of scripture

  1197. and on

  1198. and on

  1199. they go.

  1200. But Satan's

  1201. deceptions

  1202. also try

  1203. to reach

  1204. to our

  1205. hearts.

  1206. Remember

  1207. how he

  1208. came to

  1209. Eve in

  1210. the garden

  1211. trying to

  1212. get her

  1213. to question

  1214. God's

  1215. word and

  1216. God's

  1217. character.

  1218. Did God

  1219. really say?

  1220. God knows

  1221. that when you

  1222. eat this

  1223. you'll be

  1224. like him.

  1225. In other

  1226. words,

  1227. God's trying

  1228. to keep

  1229. something good

  1230. from you,

  1231. you know.

  1232. You can't

  1233. trust him.

  1234. His tactics

  1235. haven't

  1236. changed.

  1237. He sort

  1238. of has

  1239. the same

  1240. playbook and

  1241. he just

  1242. keeps playing

  1243. it over

  1244. and over

  1245. and over

  1246. again.

  1247. Like a

  1248. flood,

  1249. he's going

  1250. to try

  1251. to get

  1252. us to

  1253. doubt

  1254. God's

  1255. word and

  1256. doubt

  1257. God's

  1258. character.

  1259. And yet

  1260. as the

  1261. battle

  1262. rages

  1263. on,

  1264. God

  1265. promises

  1266. to preserve

  1267. his

  1268. church.

  1269. John

  1270. sees the

  1271. woman

  1272. given

  1273. the two

  1274. wings

  1275. of the

  1276. great

  1277. eagle

  1278. so that

  1279. she might

  1280. fly from

  1281. the serpent

  1282. into the

  1283. wilderness.

  1284. What a

  1285. beautiful

  1286. image.

  1287. It's taken

  1288. actually from

  1289. Exodus 19.

  1290. Just like

  1291. the people

  1292. of the Old

  1293. Testament were

  1294. said to be

  1295. brought out

  1296. of Egypt

  1297. on eagle's

  1298. wings into

  1299. the wilderness

  1300. to be with

  1301. God.

  1302. That great

  1303. picture of

  1304. their rescue

  1305. from Pharaoh's

  1306. death and

  1307. destruction to

  1308. be with God

  1309. in his presence

  1310. in the

  1311. wilderness.

  1312. So the

  1313. New Testament

  1314. church will

  1315. be carried

  1316. by God

  1317. and protected

  1318. from Satan's

  1319. attacks.

  1320. The

  1321. wilderness was

  1322. often a

  1323. place in

  1324. the Old

  1325. Testament where

  1326. God purified

  1327. and protected

  1328. his people.

  1329. And we're

  1330. told here that

  1331. there in the

  1332. wilderness the

  1333. earth opens

  1334. its mouth and

  1335. swallows the

  1336. destructive waters

  1337. of the dragon.

  1338. Just like in

  1339. Exodus 15 the

  1340. earth is said to

  1341. swallow Pharaoh

  1342. and his chariots

  1343. or like number

  1344. 16 the earth is

  1345. said to swallow

  1346. Korah's rebellion

  1347. as they rebelled

  1348. against God's

  1349. goodness and God's

  1350. word.

  1351. So the

  1352. sovereign God will

  1353. continue to

  1354. protect his

  1355. people from

  1356. all that

  1357. threatens to

  1358. destroy them.

  1359. Though we live

  1360. in the final

  1361. stages of the

  1362. great spiritual

  1363. battle though we

  1364. have an enemy

  1365. bent on washing

  1366. us away God

  1367. will not allow

  1368. his people to

  1369. be overcome.

  1370. And there in

  1371. the wilderness

  1372. John says

  1373. they'll be

  1374. nourished for

  1375. a time times

  1376. and half a

  1377. time.

  1378. As Pastor

  1379. Matt mentioned

  1380. last week this

  1381. number comes up

  1382. often in the

  1383. book of Revelation

  1384. and it comes up

  1385. in different forms.

  1386. Earlier in this

  1387. passage it was

  1388. given as

  1389. 1260 days.

  1390. In chapter

  1391. 11 it was

  1392. called 42

  1393. months.

  1394. And here

  1395. again it's

  1396. called time

  1397. times and

  1398. half a time

  1399. which is

  1400. one time

  1401. times two

  1402. and a half.

  1403. It's all

  1404. three and a

  1405. half.

  1406. 42 months

  1407. is three and

  1408. a half years.

  1409. If a month

  1410. is 30 days

  1411. then 1260

  1412. days is three

  1413. and a half

  1414. years.

  1415. Just different

  1416. ways of talking

  1417. about this same

  1418. period of time.

  1419. But what's the

  1420. significance of

  1421. three and a

  1422. half years?

  1423. Well one clue

  1424. that John may

  1425. be using this

  1426. number in a

  1427. symbolic way is

  1428. found right here

  1429. in Revelation

  1430. 12.

  1431. We see in

  1432. verse 6 that

  1433. immediately after

  1434. the ascension of

  1435. Jesus when he's

  1436. caught up to be

  1437. with God in his

  1438. throne it says

  1439. the woman fled

  1440. into the

  1441. wilderness where

  1442. she has a place

  1443. prepared by God

  1444. in which she is

  1445. to be nourished

  1446. for 1260 days

  1447. or a time

  1448. times and half

  1449. a time.

  1450. In other words

  1451. that period starts

  1452. at the ascension

  1453. of Jesus.

  1454. So it seems

  1455. to be that

  1456. John's saying

  1457. that the whole

  1458. period from

  1459. Christ's ascension

  1460. to his return

  1461. will be covered

  1462. by that time

  1463. times and half

  1464. a time.

  1465. And that makes

  1466. sense when you

  1467. look at where

  1468. this phrase comes

  1469. from in the Old

  1470. Testament.

  1471. In the book of

  1472. Daniel time

  1473. times and half

  1474. a time was a

  1475. way of speaking

  1476. about an intense

  1477. time of persecution

  1478. for God's people

  1479. that will ultimately

  1480. and graciously be cut

  1481. short by God's

  1482. rescue and judgment.

  1483. Three and a half

  1484. after all is half

  1485. of seven.

1486. You can tell I did

  1487. really well in math

  1488. right?

  1489. If seven represents

  1490. a full or complete

  1491. cycle of trial

  1492. and persecution

  1493. and suffering

  1494. God's going to

  1495. cut it in half

  1496. and rescue his

  1497. people at just

  1498. the right time

  1499. when the times

  1500. get hard and it

  1501. feels like it's

  1502. turning into times

  1503. of hardship

  1504. God says that's

  1505. when it will come

  1506. to an end

  1507. and I will rescue

  1508. you.

  1509. at just the

  1510. right time.

  1511. Now of course

  1512. there are other

  1513. ways of understanding

  1514. this number.

  1515. Some Christians

  1516. believe that this

  1517. number could represent

1518. the three and a half

  1519. years of suffering

  1520. during the Jewish

  1521. war of 66 to 70

  1522. AD when the temple

  1523. was eventually

  1524. destroyed.

  1525. That was a time

  1526. of great suffering.

  1527. Some think that

  1528. this number represents

  1529. a three and a half

  1530. year period of intense

  1531. persecution just

  1532. before Jesus returns.

  1533. And the reality is

  1534. I think John's vision

  1535. could speak to all

  1536. of these just like

  1537. Old Testament

  1538. prophecy.

  1539. Revelation has

  1540. multiple horizons

  1541. of fulfillment.

  1542. But I think John's

  1543. pastoral point to his

  1544. churches is the same.

1545. We live in a time

  1546. of trial,

  1547. of battle,

  1548. of hardship.

  1549. There will be days

  1550. when it seems like

  1551. the fight is

  1552. overwhelming,

  1553. like a flood.

  1554. Yeah,

  1555. there will be days

  1556. when it seems like

  1557. the earth opens

  1558. its mouth and

  1559. swallows the whole

  1560. trial and brings

  1561. relief.

  1562. But not always.

  1563. But through it all

  1564. there's coming a day

  1565. when this time will

  1566. end.

  1567. This period won't

  1568. last forever.

  1569. Just like it didn't

  1570. last forever in the

  1571. Jewish war,

  1572. just like it won't

  1573. last forever,

  1574. right before Jesus

  1575. comes it won't last

  1576. forever.

  1577. Just when you think

  1578. your strength is

  1579. giving way,

  1580. just when you think

  1581. you can't hold out

  1582. any longer,

  1583. God's rescue will

  1584. come.

  1585. And we know that

  1586. will ultimately be

  1587. true one day.

  1588. The king who was

  1589. caught up to God

  1590. and to his throne,

  1591. who cast Satan

  1592. down from heaven,

  1593. he will return

  1594. bodily in glory.

  1595. And the great

  1596. dragon will be

  1597. condemned forever.

  1598. And he will be

  1599. removed from the

  1600. earth once and for

  1601. all.

  1602. And the church

  1603. will reign with

  1604. Christ for eternity

  1605. in a new heavens

  1606. and a new earth.

  1607. Yes, friends,

  1608. the battle still

  1609. rages on.

  1610. Yes, we need to

  1611. take up the armor

  1612. of God each day.

  1613. And if you're

  1614. wondering, how do I

  1615. do that?

  1616. You can come to

  1617. Sunday school.

  1618. Because we're

  1619. going through

  1620. Ephesians and

  1621. we're going to

  1622. talk about the

  1623. armor of God.

  1624. Yes, we need to

  1625. immerse ourselves

  1626. in God's word

  1627. and God's gospel

  1628. to ready ourselves

  1629. for the fight,

  1630. to be ready

  1631. against these

  1632. floods that

  1633. come our way.

  1634. Yes, we need

  1635. to bear witness

  1636. even if it means

  1637. losing what we

  1638. love, even our

  1639. own lives.

  1640. But friends,

  1641. one day the

  1642. battle will end.

  1643. The time is

  1644. short, friends.

  1645. So don't give

  1646. up.

  1647. Stand firm

  1648. against the

  1649. devil's

  1650. accusations

  1651. and lies,

  1652. knowing that

  1653. he is ultimately

  1654. a defeated

  1655. foe.

  1656. Stand firm

  1657. in your

  1658. King, the

  1659. Lord Jesus.

  1660. He will

  1661. win the

  1662. battle.

  1663. Did we in

  1664. our own

  1665. strength confide?

  1666. Our striving

  1667. would be

  1668. losing, Martin

  1669. Luther wrote

  1670. many years ago.

  1671. We're not the

  1672. right man on

  1673. our side, the

  1674. man of God's

  1675. own choosing.

  1676. Do you ask

  1677. who that may

  1678. be?

  1679. Christ Jesus

  1680. it is he, the

  1681. Lord of hosts

  1682. his name, from

  1683. age to age the

  1684. same, and he

  1685. must win the

  1686. battle.

  1687. Let's pray.

  1688. Father in

  1689. heaven,

  1690. help us now

  1691. in these quiet

  1692. moments

  1693. to be reminded

  1694. again

  1695. that if we are

  1696. in the midst

  1697. of trial,

  1698. persecution,

  1699. suffering,

  1700. Lord, that you

  1701. promise to win

  1702. the victory one

  1703. day.

  1704. Lord, this life

  1705. may not be

  1706. full of ease

  1707. and comfort.

  1708. In fact, you

  1709. promise us

  1710. that it won't

  1711. be, but we

  1712. know there's

  1713. coming a great

  1714. and glorious

  1715. day when the

  1716. battle will be

  1717. won and you

  1718. will be all in

  1719. all.

  1720. So encourage

  1721. our hearts

  1722. now to keep

  1723. up in the

  1724. fight.

  1725. Equip us

  1726. with what we

  1727. need, help

  1728. us to

  1729. encourage one

  1730. another in

  1731. this race.

  1732. And Lord, if

  1733. we've grown

  1734. complacent, if

  1735. we've grown

  1736. stagnant, if

  1737. we've grown

  1738. sleepy, Lord,

  1739. by your Holy

  1740. Spirit, cause

  1741. us to wake

  1742. up.

  1743. Renew our

  1744. vision, renew

  1745. our zeal for

  1746. you and for

  1747. your kingdom.

  1748. Silence the

  1749. voice of the

  1750. accuser.

  1751. Help us to

  1752. stand in the

  1753. truth of your

  1754. word against

  1755. his deceptions.

  1756. And Lord, we

  1757. pray that through

  1758. our witness as a

  1759. church, many

  1760. would come to

  1761. know the

  1762. forgiving,

  1763. liberating

  1764. grace of the

  1765. Lord Jesus

  1766. Christ.

  1767. Pray this in

  1768. his name.

  1769. Amen.

  1770. Amen.
