  1. Let me invite you to come in and take a seat as we begin.

  2. It's good to see you all today.

  3. In the book of Isaiah, chapter 45, verse 22, God says this,

    Isaiah 45:22

  4. Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God, and there is no other.

  5. So we live in a world where it can be increasingly hard to tell what's real and what's fake, right?

  6. And that's not just the case on the internet or on a news cycle.

  7. It's also true of the spiritual life.

  8. Sociologists and some philosophers of modernity describe it as the Nova effect.

  9. Every day there's an increasing number of options that seem to present themselves

  10. for our spiritual consideration and consumption.

  11. Boom!

  12. They just multiply.

  13. But you know, in the midst of the book of Isaiah,

  14. the God of the Bible, one true creator and redeemer,

  15. has revealed himself definitively in Jesus Christ.

  16. We see the glory of God in the face of Jesus.

  17. He makes himself unmistakably free to us.

  18. And this God says,

  19. I am God.

  20. There is no other.

  21. Turn to me and be saved.

  22. So in worship, we have an opportunity to respond to this call of God.

  23. To turn to him.

  24. To find a real God who's made himself known and has saved to be rescued.

  25. So let's stand and let's sing together.

  26. Amen.

  27. Amen.

  28. Thank you.

  29. Thank you.

  71. Death could not hold you.

  72. The veil tore before you.

  73. You silenced the lost.

  74. How sin and gain.

  75. The heavens are roaring.

  76. The praise of your glory.

  77. For you are raised to life again.

  78. And you have no rival.

  79. You have no equal.

  80. Now and forever God you raise.

  111. What a powerful name it is.

  112. What a powerful name it is.

  113. You may be seated.

  114. Good morning church.

  115. Our reading this morning is taken from the book of Daniel chapter 7 verses 7 to 18.

    Daniel 7:7–18

  116. That is Daniel 7 verses 7 to 18.

    Daniel 7:7–18

  117. It is on page 697 of the Pew Bible.

  118. When I am done reading I will say,

  119. This is God's word to which I invite you to respond,

  120. Thanks be to God.

  121. In this passage, Daniel is already part way through describing a vision that he had received.

  122. So once again, Daniel 7, 7 to 18.

  123. I read,

  124. After this, in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong.

  125. It had great iron teeth.

  126. It devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet.

  127. It was different from all the beasts that were before it.

  128. And it had ten horns.

  129. I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots.

  130. And behold, in this own horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.

  131. As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat.

  132. His clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool.

  133. His throne was fiery flames, its wheels were burning fire.

  134. A stream of fire issued and came out from before him.

  135. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

  136. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.

  137. I looked then, because of the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking.

  138. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed, and given over to be burned with fire.

  139. As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

  140. I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven, there came one like a son of man.

  141. And he came to the Ancient of Days, and was presented before him.

  142. And to him was given dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him.

  143. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom, one that shall not be destroyed.

  144. As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious, and the visions of my head alarmed me.

  145. I approached one of those who stood there, and asked him the truth concerning all this.

  146. So he told me, and made known to me the interpretation of the things.

  147. These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth.

  148. But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.

  149. This is God's word.

  150. Amen.

  151. Let us pray.

  152. Father God, we thank you for the gift of your word, and for the ways it helps us to see you clearly.

  153. In the midst of the increasingly self-promoting and boastful world that we live, we are glad that you remain the one worthy of all true worship.

  154. The Ancient of Days, in a class of your own, with no rival or equal, in heaven above or on earth below.

  155. We rejoice with the thousand thousands that serve you, and join the innumerable hosts of creation to sing your praise.

  156. Yet, Lord, no sooner we rise from worship than the vision begins to fade, as we are sworn by the voices of beasts and idols that seek to usurp your position of worship in our hearts.

  157. They speak great boasts and lies, promising to fulfill our deepest desires, things we only ought to seek from you, if only we would worship and serve them.

  158. We would claim to be wise and spiritual enough to see through the folly and lies of their boast, Lord, but alas, we are often deceived.

  159. Even worse, Lord, more often than we dare acknowledge, we become like them, claiming to have achieved by our merit and skill the true victor who, through his death and resurrection, rescued us from our sin and our reigns in majesty.

  160. We see him, to whom one day every knee will bow and tongue confess to his everlasting dominion.

  161. We see him who will fulfill our deepest longings, promising to wipe away every tear from our eyes, and to give us a share in his kingdom for our possession forever and ever.

  162. We ask that you help us keep that vision.

  163. We ask that you have given to everyone who has turned from self-reliance and self-salvation to trust wholly in Christ,

  164. that a perfect ransom has been paid for you by God's own Son, the perfect Son of Man, Jesus Christ,

  165. and all your sins have been forgiven.

  166. So let's...

  167. This is...

  168. Is...

  169. Peacarlúng...

  170. We...

  171. In all that score

  172. Bowing to the Father's will

  173. He took the crown of thorns

  174. Oh, that rugged cross

  175. My salvation

  176. Where you love poured out

  177. Over me

  178. Now my soul cries out

  179. Hallelujah

  180. Praise and hallelujah

  181. To Thee

  182. Please stand as we continue to worship

  183. The scent of heaven

  184. God's own soul

  185. To purchase and redeem

  186. And reconcile the very ones

  187. Who nailed Him to the tree

  188. Oh, that rugged cross

  189. My salvation

  190. Where you love poured out

  191. Over me

  192. Now my soul cries out

  193. Hallelujah

  194. Praise and honor

  195. Now my death is paid

  196. It is paid in full

  197. Now the curse of sin

  198. Has no hold on me

  199. Whom the sun sets free

  200. Oh, is free indeed

  201. Now my death is paid in full

  202. Now my death is paid in full

  203. By the precious blood

  204. That my Jesus

  205. Now my death is paid in full

  206. Now the curse of sin

  207. Has no hold on me

  208. Whom the sun

  209. Whom the sun sets free

  210. Oh, is free

  211. Indeed

  212. Indeed

  213. Indeed

  214. Oh, that rugged cross

  215. acs my salvation

  216. And VI

  217. Praise and honor run to thee

  218. See the stone is rolled away

  219. Behold the empty tomb

  220. Hallelujah, God be praised

  221. He's risen from the grave

  222. Oh, that rugged cross of salvation

  223. May your love float out over me

  224. Now my soul cries out

  225. Hallelujah

  226. Praise and honor run to thee

  227. Praise and honor run to thee

  228. Please be seated

  229. Paul tells us in Ephesians 2 that the cross has not only removed the barrier between us and God, but also between us and one another.

  230. The new community the church is a gospel reality

  256. Beth and I be happy to connect you with our youth group leaders

  257. And get you plugged into to our youth ministry

  258. Last thing

  259. Good friday and easter are coming up believe it or not easter is march 31st this year

  260. And we'll have our good friday service on march

  261. 29th at 6 30 as well

  262. Let me encourage you to start thinking who you might invite to come with you to either of these services

  263. These are great services to invite friends who might not normally come to church

  264. And the gospel will be clearly presented in both of those services

  265. So consider who you might bring along

  266. Well

  267. As a church

  268. We see of our city as we reach here locally

  269. We have an impact globally

  270. And john and anita hinkson

  271. Have been at the vanguard of this work for many many years here in new haven and at yale university through their work at the rivendell institute

  272. Many of you know and love john and anita

  273. As they have been members here at trinity for

  274. Well

  275. Probably longer than most of us right john

  276. But not all of us

  277. And they have been mentors and models for

  278. Last thing that he wrote before the lord took him

  279. He identified some of these challenges that we the church in america

  280. Really really discouraging

  281. We we really are struggling

  282. With attractiveness and we have a deep need

  283. For transformation

  284. Conformity to the image of christ

  285. Second one that tim mentions

  286. Is uh

  287. We we seem to be really challenged with our ability to take the wonderful good news of the gospel

  288. And communicate it

  289. Such that it is actually heard

  290. As good news

  291. We have this challenge we struggle with this challenge

  292. Of thoughtful translation

  293. Of the gospel

  294. Such that it's heard

  295. As good news

  296. So those are a couple of the challenges that we face and again

  297. I I don't mean to be over dramatic

  298. As a church as a people of god across the ages we've always faced challenges like these

  299. So nothing new here

  300. But these are a couple of the challenges that we at rivendell are trying to put our attention to

  301. And and anita and I have been

  302. Seeking to respond to these challenges all the years that we've been here many decades

  303. And uh trying to cultivate disciples of jesus as growing image bearers and witness bearers

  304. Mark 2 13 describes jesus it says of jesus he went out

  305. Again

  306. And the people came to him

  307. And he taught them

  308. See that he went out

  309. He was missional

  310. He took the initiative to connect with those around him and he did it again and again and again

  311. This was his this was his practice

  312. And he went out and the people came to him

  313. That was he was attractive

  314. They found something in him that just drew them to him

  315. He went out

  316. And the people came to him and he taught them

  317. He was able to impart

  318. He had good news to offer them

  319. And he communicated that

  320. So that's what we that's what we try to do

  321. We seek to sow to present and future in that sense

  322. It's also a place where so much of the discourse that animates our nation is kind of forged

  323. It's it ideas of the currency of the university

  324. So it's a wonderful place to bring gospel truths there

  325. And particularly

  326. We find ourselves I'm convinced

  327. In a time where to use Paul's expression

  328. A wide door for effectual service is opened to us

  329. As he says in first corinthians

  330. So what is this new wide door?

  331. Well

  332. I'm going to try to make this super short

  333. I love this stuff as an historian

  334. The university has long operated

  335. Unicipate

  336. So as a result many Christians in the academy

  337. Have found themselves undergoing this very secular apprenticeship

  338. As they are cultivated in their disciplines

  339. And have very few models

  340. Or very much opportunity to begin to ask the question

  341. Well what bearing does my faith have in this discipline?

  342. What are some of the riches that the gospel might bring

  343. To the questions that my discipline asks

  344. The challenges that we face

  345. So very little of that is done

  346. Now lately

  347. Here's some of the good news

  348. Lately

  349. This enlightenment model of how we should do the university

  350. Is really starting to fray significantly

  351. And it's a fascinating story

  352. I'd love to tell it in like some time

  353. But this supposed neutral rationality

  354. That the university prizes

  355. Really like a suit

  356. That you could just take off

  357. And leave behind

  358. Isn't it more like a skin

  359. That you just bring with you inevitably?

  360. In fact

  361. Inevitably we see through lenses

  362. That we each and every one

  363. Have been grinding all our lives

  364. Through all of our experiences

  365. And that's what we've got

  366. To engage with knowledge with

  367. So all this to say

  368. That this old model

  369. The enlightenment model of the university

  370. Is really fraying

  371. And now people are realizing

  372. Hey

  373. We inevitably bring our perspectives

  374. Let's bring them

  375. In the hopes that they can contribute

  376. So we want to try to encourage Christians

  377. To begin to think this way

  378. And in terms of their contribution

  379. That they can make

  380. In a sense

  381. To sow to

  382. What we might call

  383. A Christian renaissance

  384. Whereby we as believers

  385. In our different disciplines

  386. Are beginning to ask

  387. Well what are some of the riches

  388. Of the gospel

  389. That I can bring to bear

  390. In my discipline

  391. Some of the motivations

  392. Some of the insights

  393. Some of the intuitions

  394. That I can then bring to bear

  395. On the puzzles

  396. And the projects

  397. That the academy has

  398. For the common good

  399. And notice

  400. For the common good

  401. This is the way

  402. We need to frame it

  403. In contrast to a way

  404. That often it can be tempting

  405. To frame it in

  406. In terms of the culture war

  407. Where we're thinking

  408. In terms of a power struggle

  409. Okay

  410. These people think this way

  411. And we think differently

  412. And we just need to beat them

  413. In this power struggle

  414. No, no, no

  415. We need to think in terms

  416. Of the common good

  417. And this sort of Christian contribution

  418. Brought into the context

  419. Of the academy

  420. Is going to require

  421. Some sort of sensitivity

  422. And thoughtfulness

  423. In its contextualization

  424. To really make a contribution

  425. But there is a contribution

  426. To be made

  427. So how do we go about

  428. Sowing to these things?

  429. Well one

  430. By engaging

  431. That is

  432. Finding

  433. And maybe forging

  434. Contexts

  435. In which

  436. It is very natural

  437. For us to be able

  438. To bear witness to Christ

  439. Finding or forging

  440. Those places

  441. It's very natural

  442. To just speak of these things

  443. One of the places

  444. That I've made reference

  445. To a few times now

  446. Is a sauna

  447. Where a whole lot of people

  448. From the university hang out

  449. And they're sitting there

  450. And we have conversations

  451. About meaningful things

  452. All the time

  453. There's a place

  454. Dinner tables

  455. Hikes

  456. So many places

  457. That we can find

  458. Where it's natural

  459. To communicate the good news

  460. But then also

  461. Coming on the side

  462. Believers

  463. And helping to equip them

  464. To be able to do

  465. These things well

  466. Creating a womb

  467. If you will

  468. Where these good

  469. Capacities can gestate

  470. So what Anita and I have done

  471. In our particular task

  472. At Rivendell

  473. Is putting together

  474. It's a lot of fun

  475. And you know

  476. There is such a hunger

  477. For the gospel

  478. We're finding

  479. Yeah

  480. You remember how

  481. Jesus said to Paul

  482. In Corinth

  483. I guess it was

  484. Go on

  485. Go on

  486. Communicating the gospel

  487. For I have many people

  488. In this city

  489. And we trust that the Lord

  490. Has many people

  491. In this city

  492. I'll just give one

  493. Quick illustration

  494. As I say

  495. One of the wonderful places

  496. We found

  497. Is the sauna

  498. Of a local gym

  499. That we go to

  500. Where a lot of

  501. University folk hang out

  502. And it's

  503. Come to have a reputation

  504. Of a place where you can go

  505. To talk about

  506. These meaningful things

  507. In fact

  508. Just the other day

  509. There was a fellow

  510. That came up

  511. And he pressed his

  512. He pressed his face

  513. Up against the

  514. Glass door

  515. And he said

  516. Hey is

  517. Is this the place

  518. Where we talk about

  519. Meaningful things in life

  520. I've heard

  521. That there

  522. That you guys do that

  523. And is this

  524. Says yeah

  525. Come on in

  526. Come on in

  527. So when he comes

  528. And he

  529. He was a ripe old age

  530. He was a professor emeritus

  531. That was there

  532. And he comes in here

  533. Come on in

  534. Come on in

  535. And here

  536. You've been here before

  537. No first time

  538. We'll take the

  539. Take the lower bench here

  540. Not a humble thing

  541. It's just less hot

  542. Yeah yeah

  543. Come on in

  544. And we're going at

  545. We're going at

  546. Gospel conversation

  547. And Kierkegaard

  548. And Hegel

  549. And that

  550. And he's just having

  551. So much fun

  552. And as I'm watching him

  553. About 10-15 minutes in

  554. But it was just so wonderful

  555. You don't know

  556. How long it's been

  557. Since I've had

  558. Conversations like these

  559. I really need these

  560. And we're finding this

  561. Again and again and again

  562. So the harvest

  563. Is ripe and white

  564. So we just want to be

  565. Workers to go out there

  566. And thank you

  567. For your partnership in this

  568. You as a church

  569. Have come alongside us

  570. And allowed us to do this

  571. All these many years

  572. And we're really grateful

  573. For this partnership

  574. In Asia, Africa, South America

  575. The Middle East

  576. The Pacific Islands

  577. In your providence

  578. You have gathered people here

  579. In New Haven

  580. From all these places

  581. So we thank you

  582. For the faithful labors

  583. Of John and Anita

  584. And how through their work

  585. They have

  586. Let our love for you

  587. Lord Jesus abound

  588. With the freedom

  589. Of your love for us

  590. Your forgiveness of sins

  591. The hope we have in you

  592. Of a good and certain future

  593. The purpose you give

  594. To each and every day

  595. Be like a stream

  596. That wells up in our hearts

  597. Pushes over the banks

  598. You are God

  599. And there is no other

  600. You're the one we've been

  601. Looking for this whole time

  602. And now where else

  603. Would we go?

  604. How deep the Father's love for us

  605. Cause my sin upon his shoulders

  606. Ashamed I hear my mocking voice

  607. Why should I gain from his reward?

  608. I can't

  609. Before we begin

  610. I want to do something real quick

  611. This is not a book giveaway

  612. Sorry, I will need these

  613. For the next couple of weeks

  614. Or months

  615. Three books on the book of Revelation

  616. If you're interested in

  617. Finding something to read

  618. Blessed by Nancy Guthrie

  619. It's new

  620. It has a whole series of podcasts

  621. If you want to listen

  622. Rather than read

  623. It's been very good

  624. Vern Poitras

  625. The Returning King

  626. A Guide to the Book of Revelation

  627. It's small

  628. But very powerful

  629. And then

  630. The commentary that I've spent

  631. Most of my time is

  632. Greg Beal

  633. This is Little Beal

  634. There's a big one

  635. So this is

  636. This is your user friendly version

  637. It's only 400 pages

  638. Instead of 800

  639. So

  640. But

  641. If you're looking for those

  642. They also were sent out

  643. A couple weeks ago

  644. In the weekly newsletter

  645. As an attachment

  646. And if you need to find that again

  647. You can contact the church office

  648. And we can direct you again

  649. To getting those

  650. We continue in the book of Revelation

  651. If you were here in the fall

  652. You would remember that when

  653. We looked at the situation

  654. Of the churches in the first century

  655. One of the pressures they faced

  656. Was the rise of the cult of the emperor

  657. In the first century

  658. There were slowly but growing

  659. Worship of the emperor

  660. Throughout the Roman Empire

  661. Initially it was only

  662. Worshipping dead emperors

  663. So you had to have been

  664. In the past tense

  665. In order to get a temple built for you

  666. But by the end of the first century

  667. They were starting to build temples

  668. To living emperors

  669. And the emperor was being exalted

  670. To a high level

  671. And Christians were facing

  672. A challenge

  673. Because the empire they lived in

  674. Was providing great things

  675. It was providing peace

  676. It was providing security

  677. It was providing economic prosperity

  678. The travel

  679. The roads that they built

  680. The ways that they improved society

  681. For many people

  682. It was something that they wanted

  683. To be a part of

  684. And yet

  685. And yet

  686. The emperor was increasingly

  687. Being raised up

  688. And of course

  689. We also know

  690. That for the Christians

  691. It wasn't always a great thing

  692. When the emperor

  693. Had so much power

  694. In society

  695. Because when the emperor

  696. Decided he didn't like Christians

  697. Or he wanted to blame Christians

  698. For things that were going wrong

  699. Persecution ensued

  700. And there was great suffering

  701. In the church

  702. In the midst of this

  703. Imagine yourself

  704. As a first century Christian

  705. And thinking

  706. You know what

  707. They're right

  708. That's the life I want

  709. I'm just going to say

  710. Okay

  711. I'll worship the emperor

  712. How bad can it be

  713. Now

  714. We sit here in church

  715. And we think

  716. Would we do that

  717. Well

  718. You know

  719. There are lots of stories

  720. Throughout human history

  721. Where people

  722. Captivated by something

  723. That met their longings

  724. In particular ways

  725. And showed great promise

  726. And power

  727. Turned their allegiance

  728. To these things

  729. This is what happened

  730. In Germany

  731. In the 1930s

  732. This is what happened

  733. In America

  734. As white people

  735. Embraced a view

  736. Of race

  737. That was so contrary

  738. To God's plan

  739. In the church

  740. And listen

  741. It happens globally

  742. It happens politically

  743. It happens societally

  744. It happens personally

  745. When we laugh

  746. With the bully

  747. Rather than stand up

  748. For the kid

  749. Who's picked on

  750. At school

  751. Or when we

  752. Allow

  753. A colleague

  754. To continue

  755. Speaking poorly

  756. Of one of your

  757. Co-workers

  758. Unfairly

  759. And unjustly

  760. How easily

  761. We get caught up

  762. In things

  763. Greater than us

  764. Because we want

  765. To belong

  766. Because we want

  767. To prosper

  768. Because we want

  769. To find life

  770. This morning

  771. We're going to look

  772. At Revelation

    Revelation 13 chapter mention

  773. Chapter 13

  774. And if you want

  775. To turn there

  776. It's page 972

  777. In your pew bible

  778. We're going to be

  779. Looking at a picture

  780. And we're in a section

  781. In Revelation

  782. 12 through 14

  783. Where we see

  784. That there's a real

  785. Spiritual warfare

  786. Going on

  787. That we are involved

  788. In right now

  789. Between the forces

  790. Of God

  791. And his kingdom

  792. And those

  793. Who would stand

  794. Against it

  795. And we saw

  796. There was a dragon

  797. In the

  798. Revelation

  799. Symbolic language

  800. The dragon

  801. Symbolizing Satan

  802. Pursuing the woman

  803. Who was giving birth

  804. To the church

  805. And these pictures

  806. This image

  807. Of this grand battle

  808. And so this is what

  809. We saw in chapter 12

  810. In chapter 13

  811. What we see

  812. Is an extension

  813. Of that vision

  814. We see going back

  815. And saying

  816. Okay how did this

  817. Battle

  818. How was this battle

  819. Waged

  820. And what we will see

  821. Is that the battle

  822. Here is waged

  823. Through counterfeit

  824. Power

  825. And being a symbol

  826. Of Satan

  827. So here we go

  828. Then the dragon

  829. Became furious

  830. With the woman

  831. And went off

  832. To make war

  833. On the rest

  834. Of her offspring

  835. On those who keep

  836. The commandments

  837. Of God

  838. And hold

  839. To the testimony

  840. Of Jesus

  841. And he stood

  842. On the sand

  843. Of the sea

  844. And I saw a beast

  845. Rising out of the sea

  846. With ten horns

  847. And seven heads

  848. With ten diadems

  849. On its horns

  850. And blasphemous names

  851. On its heads

  852. And the beast

  853. That I saw

  854. Was like a leopard

  855. Its feet were like a bear's

  856. And its mouth

  857. Was like a lion's mouth

  858. And to it

  859. The dragon gave his power

  860. And his throne

  861. And great authority

  862. One of its heads

  863. Seemed to have

  864. A mortal wound

  865. But its mortal wound

  866. Was healed

  867. And the whole earth

  868. Marveled

  869. As they followed

  870. The beast

  871. And they worshipped

  872. The dragon

  873. For he had given

  874. His authority

  875. To the beast

  876. And they worshipped

  877. The beast

  878. Saying

  879. Who is like the beast

  880. And who can fight

  881. Against it

  882. And the beast

  883. Was given a mouth

  884. Uttering haughty

  885. And blasphemous words

  886. And it was allowed

  887. To exercise authority

  888. For forty-two months

  889. It opened its mouth

  890. To utter blasphemies

  891. Against God

  892. Blaspheming his name

  893. And his dwelling

  894. That is those

  895. Who dwell in heaven

  896. Also it was allowed

  897. To make war

  898. On the saints

  899. And to conquer them

  900. And authority

  901. Was given it

  902. Over every tribe

  903. And people

  904. And language

  905. And nation

  906. And all who dwell

  907. On the earth

  908. Will worship it

  909. Everyone whose name

  910. Has not been written

  911. Before the foundation

  912. Of the world

  913. In the book of life

  914. Of the lamb

  915. That was slain

  916. If anyone has an ear

  917. Let him hear

  918. If anyone is to be

  919. Taken captive

  920. To captivity he goes

  921. If anyone is to be

  922. Slain with the sword

  923. With the sword

  924. Must he be slain

  925. Here is a call

  926. For the endurance

  927. And faith of the saints

  928. Then I saw another beast

  929. Rising out of the earth

  930. It had two horns

  931. Like a lamb

  932. And it spoke like a dragon

  933. It exercises all the authority

  934. Of the first beast

  935. In its presence

  936. And makes the earth

  937. And its inhabitants

  938. Worship the first beast

  939. Whose mortal wounds

  940. Was allowed to give breath

  941. To the image of the beast

  942. So that the image

  943. Of the beast

  944. Might even speak

  945. And might cause those

  946. Who would not worship

  947. The image of the beast

  948. To be slain

  949. Also it causes all

  950. Both small and great

  951. Both rich and poor

  952. Both free and slave

  953. To be marked

  954. On the right hand

  955. Of the forehead

  956. So that no one can buy

  957. Or sell

  958. Unless it has the mark

  959. Unless he has the mark

  960. That is the name

  961. Of the beast

  962. Or the number

  963. Of its name

  964. This calls for wisdom

  965. Let the one

  966. Who has understanding

  967. Calculate the number

  968. Of the beast

  969. For it is the number

  970. Of a man

  971. And his number is

  972. Six

  973. Six

  974. Six

  975. And this is God's word

  976. So what do we do

  977. With this

  978. Well today I want

  979. To take a classic

  980. Bible study approach

  981. To this

  982. We're going to explain it

  983. What does it actually say

  984. And then we're going

  985. To interpret it

  986. What does it mean

  987. What does it mean

  988. For us

  989. And then we're going

  990. To respond to it

  991. How do we then

  992. Respond to the truth

  993. Of this passage

  994. So if you're taking

  995. Your notes

  996. There's our outline

  997. First we're just

  998. Going to explain it

  999. And we're going

  1000. To start

  1001. There are two beasts

  1002. That are obviously

  1003. They dominate this chapter

  1004. Right

  1005. Two beasts

  1006. Are the central images

  1007. And what are they

  1008. Well clearly they are

  1009. Agents of the dragon

  1010. They are like him

  1011. They have horns

  1012. They have crowns

  1013. They

  1014. For the first beast

  1015. The second beast

  1016. Speaks

1017. As if he were dragon

  1018. They come with power

  1019. And authority

1020. Again we see the authority

1021. Given to the first beast

  1022. By the dragon

  1023. His authority

  1024. His thrones

  1025. His power

  1026. The second one

  1027. Shows power

  1028. By doing miraculous things

  1029. These miraculous things

1030. Are a part of the wonder

  1031. Of these beasts

  1032. You know it's fascinating

  1033. Because beast seems

1034. To be a negative image

1035. And yet what we see here

1036. Is that people marvel at

  1037. And flock to

1038. And end up following these beasts

  1039. Partly why

  1040. Because they're doing miracles

  1041. The first beast

  1042. Has a wound

1043. That should have killed it

  1044. And yet it lived

  1045. And the second beast

  1046. Performed signs and wonders

  1047. Using imagery

1048. That we might have pulled

  1049. From the Old Testament

  1050. When in

  1051. First Kings 18

  1052. Elijah calls

  1053. They come with this

  1054. This massive

  1055. Powerful image

  1056. Of

  1057. That's calling the world

  1058. To respond to them

  1059. Now

  1060. You're here

1061. And what you see in Daniel

  1062. Is that

  1063. These are actually

  1064. Representative

  1065. Of governments

  1066. And political powers

  1067. They're kings

  1068. And kingdoms

  1069. That will rise up

  1070. Against God

  1071. And his kingdom

  1072. In the world

  1073. The final thing

1074. We need to explain here

  1075. Is the number

  1076. Because everybody

  1077. Knows this number

  1078. Right

  1079. And you know

1080. In the last couple of years

  1081. People have wondered

  1082. You know

  1083. Is getting a vaccine

1084. The mark of the beast

1085. Or is using a tap card

  1086. On our credit card

1087. The mark of the beast

  1088. Or

  1089. There are all these

  1090. Different ways

  1091. In which we've wondered

1092. Well I'll tell you what

  1093. When we talk to

  1094. Bible study

  1095. Bible commentators

  1096. About what the number

  1097. 666 is

  1098. They don't know

  1099. They have a lot

  1100. Of really creative ideas

  1101. There's this whole thing

  1102. Called gemetria

  1103. Where you

  1104. Take letters

1105. And you line them up

  1106. With the numbers

  1107. In the alphabet

  1108. So A is 1

  1109. And B is 2

1110. And then you add them together

  1111. And if you put

  1112. Nero Caesar

  1113. Transliterated from Greek

  1114. Into Hebrew

1115. In just the right way

1116. You might get to 666

  1117. And

  1118. The most compelling

  1119. Argument

  1120. That I found

  1121. Is that we have

  1122. Seen numbers

1123. In the book of Revelation

  1124. Be symbolic of things

  1125. Throughout the whole book

  1126. And we know

  1127. That the number 7

1128. Is the number of perfection

  1129. Or completeness

  1130. Or fulfillment

1131. And so the number 666

1132. Is the not quite number

  1133. And it's repeated

  1134. Three times

  1135. It is the

  1136. Counterfeit number

  1137. This is almost like

  1138. The perfection of God

  1139. But not quite

  1140. And this idea

  1141. Of counterfeit

  1142. Is not something

1143. That I just made up

  1144. As we look

  1145. Through this passage

  1146. In fact

  1147. What you see

  1148. Is this beast

  1149. In its compelling

  1150. Nature and power

  1151. Is like

  1152. Christ

  1153. And the Holy Spirit

  1154. The first beast

  1155. Is like Christ

  1156. Think about

  1157. What we know

  1158. About Jesus

  1159. He said

  1160. All authority

  1161. Has been

  1162. In heaven

  1163. And on earth

  1164. Has been given

  1165. To me

  1166. Therefore go

  1167. And preach the gospel

  1168. The first beast

  1169. Is given authority

  1170. And power

  1171. By the dragon

  1172. Right

  1173. Jesus rises

  1174. From the dead

  1175. And says to Thomas

  1176. Put your hand

  1177. In the wound

  1178. In my side

  1179. The mortal wound

  1180. That should have

  1181. Killed me

1182. Put it in my hands

  1183. And feet

  1184. And the dragon

  1185. Comes and says

  1186. I have a mortal wound

  1187. Too

  1188. And it's

  1189. Been healed

  1190. The counterfeit

  1191. So that we might

  1192. Be led astray

  1193. Into false worship

  1194. This of course

  1195. Is a pattern

  1196. That we know

  1197. Is throughout

  1198. The Bible

  1199. Romans 1

  1200. 25

  1201. Talks about this

  1202. We exchange

  1203. The truth of God

  1204. For a lie

  1205. And worship

  1206. And serve

  1207. The creator

  1208. The creature

  1209. Rather than the creator

  1210. Who is blessed

  1211. So

1212. What is this imagery about?

  1213. It's about these beasts

  1214. Who come like

  1215. Counterfeit saviors

  1216. Counterfeit gods

  1217. That promise

  1218. Power

  1219. And victory

  1220. And success

  1221. And salvation

  1222. But who are not

  1223. The true

  1224. And living God

  1225. And this whole vision

  1226. Seems to be given

  1227. So that

  1228. The church

  1229. Might be prepared

  1230. To see it clearly

  1231. And to respond

  1232. With perseverance

1233. This is what verse 10

  1234. Is about

  1235. You may have wondered

1236. It was kind of a weird

  1237. Interlude

  1238. Right?

  1239. It's this

  1240. Look with me

  1241. In verse 10

  1242. Right?

  1243. If anyone has

  1244. Here

  1245. Let him hear

  1246. Oh

  1247. That if anyone

  1248. Is taken captive

  1249. To captivity

  1250. He will go

  1251. And if anyone

  1252. Is slain

  1253. With the sword

  1254. With the sword

  1255. Must he be slain

  1256. Here's a call

  1257. For the endurance

  1258. And faith

  1259. Of the saints

  1260. In the face

  1261. Of these beasts

  1262. Knowing what

  1263. They're gonna do

  1264. For true Christians

  1265. To stand firm

  1266. In believing

  1267. And following Jesus

  1268. They will suffer

  1269. These things

  1270. They will go

  1271. To captivity

  1272. They will go

  1273. To death

  1274. And the call

  1275. Is to persevere

  1276. Through that

  1277. Because there is

  1278. A greater hope

  1279. On the other side

  1280. That we see

  1281. In verse 9

  1282. We'll talk about

  1283. This at the end

  1284. But those

  1285. Whose names

  1286. Are written

  1287. In the Lamb's

  1288. Book of life

  1289. The Lamb who

  1290. Was slain

  1291. For us

  1292. Even if we die

  1293. Persevering

  1294. In faith in him

  1295. Yet we will live

  1296. Because of that

  1297. And so this is

  1298. The purpose

  1299. That God gives us

  1300. For this

  1301. Passage

  1302. This is

  1303. Smorgasbord of images

  1304. What do we do

  1305. With it

  1306. Well

  1307. If you were

  1308. At our Sunday school

  1309. A couple weeks ago

  1310. This is gonna be

  1311. A review

  1312. There are lots

  1313. Of different ways

  1314. That people

  1315. Have interpreted it

  1316. There are four

  1317. Schools of thought

  1318. Throughout the church

  1319. One of them

  1320. Is fairly patently

  1321. Not true

  1322. Because they tried

  1323. To identify

  1324. The beast

  1325. With particular people

  1326. Along the way

  1327. In history

  1328. And so

  1329. You know

  1330. Charlemagne

  1331. Might have been

  1332. The beast

  1333. Well he wasn't

  1334. Because it wasn't

  1335. The end after him

  1336. So whatever it was

1337. We know that can't be it

  1338. Right

  1339. And so

1340. But there are three others

  1341. That are worth

  1342. Worth considering

  1343. One is called

  1344. The preterist

  1345. Which sees

  1346. These as images

  1347. That would be fulfilled

  1348. In the first century

1349. So this is all about

  1350. The Roman Empire

  1351. Christians facing

  1352. The Roman Empire

  1353. And the challenges

  1354. That they face

  1355. And the beast

  1356. Might be

  1357. Nero

  1358. Or Domitian

  1359. Or Diocletian

  1360. It might be

  1361. Addressed

  1362. Ready

  1363. If this might come

  1364. Right

  1365. If you're familiar

  1366. With Hal Lindsay

  1367. In the late great

  1368. Planet Earth

  1369. Or

  1370. Tim LaHaye

  1371. Jerry Jenkins

  1372. In The Left Behind

  1373. This is their take

  1374. Right

  1375. So Nicholas Carpathia

  1376. Is the beast

  1377. In this

  1378. In this image

  1379. If you're familiar

  1380. With that

  1381. The third school

  1382. Of thought

  1383. Is called

  1384. The idealist thought

  1385. That says

  1386. These images

  1387. Are giving pictures

  1388. Or seem to describe

  1389. Some stuff

  1390. In the first century

1391. And they do seem to

  1392. We do think

1393. That there is a growing

  1394. Or a trajectory

  1395. Where at the end

  1396. It will get worse

1397. And there may very well

  1398. Be a particular

  1399. Beast

  1400. Or antichrist

1401. And we'll get to that

  1402. In a minute

  1403. There may be

  1404. Something in the future

  1405. That we'll get to

  1406. But even now

  1407. We see that

  1408. These things are going

  1409. Going on

  1410. That these dynamics

  1411. Are true

  1412. In the life

  1413. Of the church

  1414. In the world

  1415. So we don't have

  1416. To choose

  1417. And say

  1418. But we can say

  1419. The beast

  1420. Have expressed themselves

  1421. In Rome

  1422. They are expressing

  1423. Themselves

  1424. In our world today

  1425. And they will express

  1426. Themselves

  1427. In the future

  1428. And this is

  1429. This is

  1430. Consistent

  1431. With what we see

  1432. In other parts

  1433. Of the New Testament

  1434. In particular

  1435. Where it talks about

  1436. What happens

  1437. In the future

  1438. Josh is going

  1439. To help me

  1440. Given our time

  1441. We're not going

  1442. To read all

  1443. Of these passages

  1444. But when Jesus

  1445. Talks about the future

  1446. And the coming

  1447. When the disciples

  1448. Say tell us

  1449. When will these things

1450. Be and what will be

1451. The sign of your coming

1452. At the end of the age

  1453. Right

  1454. Matthew 24

  1455. He says

  1456. Many will come

  1457. Not just one

  1458. But many will come

  1459. In my name

1460. Saying I am the Christ

  1461. In verse 5

1462. And then in verse 11

  1463. He'll say

  1464. Many false prophets

  1465. Will arise

  1466. So Jesus is saying

  1467. Look

  1468. You're going to see

1469. This over and over again

  1470. Right

  1471. And then it says

  1472. But at the end

  1473. There will be

  1474. An end to this

  1475. And

  1476. The one who endures

  1477. To the end

  1478. Will be saved

  1479. Paul

  1480. In 2nd Thessalonians

  1481. Chapter 2

  1482. Talks about

  1483. A figure called

  1484. The man of lawlessness

1485. And he takes his seat

1486. In the temple of God

  1487. Proclaiming himself

  1488. To be God

1489. That is the very nature

  1490. Of the counterfeit

  1491. That we see

  1492. Right

1493. And it seems to be

  1494. An individual here

1495. But then in verse 7

  1496. It talks about

  1497. The mystery of lawlessness

1498. That is already at work

1499. So we see the ongoing nature

  1500. And yet maybe

  1501. A future person

  1502. Who will embody this

  1503. In its fullness

  1504. 1st John

  1505. Talks about this

  1506. If you remember

  1507. When we preached

  1508. The 1st John

1509. Tyler did a great job

  1510. With this

  1511. The antichrist

  1512. Is coming

1513. But I tell you now

  1514. Many antichrists

  1515. Have come

1516. And then in verse 22

  1517. Here

  1518. This is the antichrist

  1519. He who denies

1520. The father and the son

  1521. So is it one

  1522. Or is it both

  1523. Well

  1524. The New testament image

  1525. Is that

  1526. These both

  1527. These are both true

  1528. So if you're wondering

  1529. Why we take this

  1530. Interpretive approach

1531. Why we do it this way

  1532. It's because we think

  1533. The new testament

  1534. Actually gives us

  1535. A complex picture

  1536. But are ultimately

  1537. Leading us to destruction

  1538. I was actually struck

  1539. By what John

  1540. Was talking about earlier

1541. With regard to the enlightenment

  1542. Because

  1543. Good heavens

  1544. The enlightenment

  1545. Was an intellectual movement

1546. That gripped the western world

1547. And maybe the whole world

  1548. For hundreds of years

  1549. Exalting human reason

  1550. And logic

  1551. And understanding

  1552. To such a height

1553. And it had a promise

  1554. Of a

  1555. It presented a promise

  1556. Of progress

  1557. Of success

  1558. Of utopia

  1559. Of fulfillment

  1560. And it was beastly

  1561. For those underneath it

1562. Because it was the enlightenment

  1563. That produced things

  1564. Like the french revolution

  1565. So we can

  1566. Yale university

  1567. Opened up

  1568. Mental health

  1569. Sites

  1570. To care for

  1571. Advocate for positions

  1572. We can support candidates

  1573. But let us

  1574. Never ever

  1575. Confuse them

  1576. Or let them

  1577. Take a counterfeit role

  1578. That God means

1579. To have in our lives

  1580. Alone

  1581. In the person

  1582. And work

  1583. Of Jesus Christ

  1584. Katie and I

  1585. Were talking about this

  1586. The other day

  1587. And she said

  1588. You know

  1589. One of the things

  1590. That's scary

  1591. Is that

  1592. The church

  1593. Can be the most

  1594. Gullible

  1595. And vulnerable

  1596. To this

  1597. Because we come

  1598. To everything

  1599. With religious fervor

  1600. But we need

  1601. To make sure

  1602. That our religious

  1603. Worship is clear

  1604. So that

  1605. As we live out

  1606. Our lives

  1607. For Christ

  1608. And for his kingdom

  1609. We do so

  1610. In a way

  1611. That makes Christ

  1612. The center

1613. Of all that we do

  1614. And friends

  1615. We do need to

  1616. Recognize as well

  1617. My time is short

  1618. So

  1619. But I just want

  1620. To recognize

  1621. That deceit

  1622. That it's not

  1623. Just things

  1624. Out there

  1625. Because the church

  1626. Itself is constantly

  1627. Under attack

  1628. The false prophet

  1629. The second beast

  1630. Comes

  1631. And as you look

  1632. Ahead in Revelation

  1633. In chapter 17

  1634. You will see

  1635. That there's this

  1636. Unholy trinity

  1637. Of the dragon

  1638. The first beast

  1639. And the second beast

  1640. Who is then later

  1641. Called the false prophet

  1642. And we know

  1643. That there are

  1644. Dynamics within

  1645. Our church

  1646. Even today

  1647. We know

  1648. That there is

  1649. Such a desire

  1650. In the western world

  1651. And even

  1652. Throughout the whole world

  1653. Where the gospel

  1654. Doesn't become

  1655. The gospel

  1656. Of Jesus Christ

  1657. This is why

  1658. Cults are so

  1659. Attractive

  1660. Because they tell you

  1661. You must do

  1662. These things

  1663. And then you're okay

  1664. And the gospel

  1665. Of grace

  1666. Is that we will

  1667. Never be good enough

  1668. And that only

  1669. By the blood

  1670. Of Jesus

  1671. Shed for us

  1672. And our coming

  1673. Trains people

  1674. To no counterfeits

  1675. Do you know

  1676. What they do?

  1677. They give them

  1678. The real thing

  1679. And they make them

  1680. Study it carefully

  1681. And they look

  1682. At the ink

  1683. And they feel

  1684. The paper

  1685. And they look

  1686. At the design

  1687. And they notice

  1688. The watermarks

  1689. And there are

  1690. All these different

  1691. Tests that they use

  1692. But they give them

  1693. The real thing

  1694. And then when

1695. They start to give them

  1696. The real thing

  1697. Mixed in with

  1698. Counterfeits

  1699. They kind of know

  1700. Even when they don't

  1701. Even when they can't

  1702. Tell you exactly

  1703. What it is

  1704. They go

  1705. Yeah this doesn't

  1706. Feel right

  1707. And then they look

  1708. At it

  1709. And they can find

  1710. Why it's

  1711. Why it's a counterfeit

  1712. Friends

  1713. This is how we

  1714. Respond to this

  1715. Chapter of the Bible

  1716. We need to look

  1717. To Jesus

  1718. We need to know

  1719. Him so well

  1720. That we won't

  1721. Get drawn away

  1722. By the counterfeits

  1723. That our world

  1724. Seduces us with

  1725. By the counterfeits

  1726. That our church

  1727. Falls into

  1728. In false teaching

  1729. We know

  1730. At the end

  1731. That Jesus

  1732. Will win

  1733. In Revelation

  1734. 19-20

  1735. These

  1736. The beast

  1737. And the false prophet

  1738. They are judged

  1739. By the one

  1740. Who comes

1741. Riding on a white horse

  1742. And they're cast

1743. Into a lake of fire

1744. And they will be destroyed

  1745. And the counterfeit

  1746. Will be shown

  1747. For what it is

  1748. In verse 20

  1749. In chapter 20

  1750. Verse 10

  1751. The dragon

  1752. Will likely be cast

  1753. Into the same

  1754. Lake of fire

  1755. These counterfeits

  1756. Will not last

  1757. And if we put

  1758. Our hope in them

  1759. There

  1760. They will destroy us

  1761. But instead

  1762. Let us

  1763. Set our hearts

  1764. And our minds

  1765. On the Lamb

  1766. Who was slain

  1767. I want to close

  1768. By just

  1769. Reminding us

  1770. Of what Scripture

  1771. Tells us

  1772. Jesus

  1773. Born of all creation

  1774. For by Him

  1775. All things were created

  1776. In heaven

  1777. And on earth

  1778. Visible and invisible

  1779. Whether thrones

  1780. Or dominions

  1781. Or rulers

  1782. Or authorities

  1783. All things were created

  1784. Through Him

  1785. And for Him

  1786. And He is before

  1787. All things

  1788. And in Him

  1789. All things hold together

1790. And He is the head

  1791. Of the body

  1792. The church

  1793. He is the beginning

  1794. The firstborn

  1795. From the dead

  1796. That in everything

  1797. He might be preeminent

  1798. For in Him

  1799. All the fullness

  1800. Of God

  1801. Was pleased to dwell

  1802. And through Him

  1803. To reconcile

  1804. To Himself

  1805. All things

  1806. Whether on earth

  1807. Or in heaven

  1808. Making peace

  1809. By the blood

  1810. Of His cross

  1811. And in Philippians 2

  1812. Paul reminds us

  1813. That though He was

1814. In the form of God

  1815. He did not count

  1816. Equality with God

1817. A thing to be grasped

  1818. But emptied Himself

  1819. Taking the form

  1820. Of a servant

  1821. Being born

1822. In the likeness of men

  1823. And being found

  1824. In human form

  1825. He humbled Himself

  1826. By becoming obedient

1827. To the point of death

  1828. Even death

  1829. On a cross

  1830. Therefore God

  1831. Has highly exalted Him

  1832. And bestowed on Him

1833. The name that is above

  1834. Every name

1835. So that at the name

  1836. Of Jesus

  1837. Every knee should bow

  1838. In heaven

  1839. And on earth

  1840. And under the earth

  1841. And every tongue

  1842. Confess

  1843. That Jesus Christ

  1844. Is Lord

1845. To the glory of God

  1846. The Father

  1847. Friends

  1848. Here's the thing

1849. I want you to see

1850. In both of these passages

  1851. Do you know

  1852. What is unique

  1853. About the glory

  1854. Of Jesus

  1855. He died for us

1856. He laid down His life

1857. He didn't take His power

1858. And impose it on people

  1859. He didn't force

  1860. But He came

  1861. And He loved

  1862. And He laid down

  1863. His life for us

  1864. One of the ways

  1865. We know

  1866. That there's a counterfeit

  1867. Is when it says

  1868. You can either

  1869. Wield your power

  1870. Without any restraint

1871. Or you can have it all

  1872. Without any cost

  1873. Because neither of those

1880. Then no matter how hard

  1881. That storm will be

  1882. We will persevere

1883. And we will be those

  1894. Lord we are deceived

1895. Lord save us from this

  1896. And by your spirit

  1897. Give us discernment

  1898. So that our loyalty
