  1. Well, good morning.

  2. Happy St. Patrick's Day parade for those of you who live in New Haven.

  3. We begin this morning.

  4. I want to tell you something.

  5. Prince of Egypt is my favorite animated movie.

  6. If you haven't seen it, it's the story of Moses in the beginning chapters of Exodus,

  7. told in an expanded and fictionalized way.

  8. And it's not a perfect movie.

  9. It doesn't reflect the whole biblical story in appropriate ways.

  10. But it opens with this amazing song called Deliver Us.

  11. And it depicts the people of Israel in slavery.

  12. And musically and visually, it just shows how downtrodden and how beaten

  13. and how oppressed they are and how deeply they suffer at the cruel hands of their Egyptian taskmasters.

  14. It depicts, I think, well, what Exodus 1, 13 says.

  15. So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves and made their lives bitter and hard service

  16. in mortar and brick and in all kinds of work in the field.

  17. And in all their work, they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.

  18. And Israel cried out, deliver us.

  19. Lord, deliver us.

  20. And of course, friends, this brings us to the book of Revelation

  21. and our series that we're preaching on this spring, finishing the book of Revelation.

  22. If you remember, the book of Revelation was written to a church at a time when the church was suffering under similar persecution.

  23. Life as a Christian in Rome had become more and more difficult.

  24. The rise of the emperor cult and worship was high, and the cost of abstaining would be significant.

  25. It was not only spiritual persecution, but also economic ostracization.

  26. You would be excluded from the hallways of wealth and power.

  27. And of course, at times, the Roman Empire persecuted Christians mercilessly and terribly.

  28. And so in the first century, as this book was written,

  29. when the people of God were saying, cry, were crying out, deliver us, O Lord.

  30. Of course, friends, we know this as well from Revelation 6, 9 through 11, which we've seen before.

  31. You remember this?

  32. In the midst of the seals, as Jesus is opening the seals,

  33. there's a picture of the saints under the altar crying out, saying,

  34. O sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?

  35. And friends, we know that the people of God have cried out throughout the ages with this same cry,

  36. Lord, deliver us.

  37. Lord, save us.

  38. Lord, will you come and make things right?

  39. Well, today, as we look at Revelation chapters 15 and 16, we see God responding to this cry.

    Revelation 15 chapter mention

  40. And in it, we see a picture of God's rescue and deliverance,

  41. but also a picture of His judgment on evildoers, on oppressors.

  42. And I will just say this morning and acknowledge some of us will struggle with this.

  43. We don't like a God who judges.

  44. We may struggle with revulsion at the idea that God would judge people,

  45. that God would be fair or good if He judged people,

  46. that a loving God would ever judge people.

  47. And I'm just going to punt.

  48. Go back to Nick's sermon last week,

  49. because he did a great job and spent about 10 or 15 minutes really unpacking this idea.

  50. How do we understand God's judgment and respond to it in a way that makes sense to us?

  51. It's not something that our modern sensibilities easily adopt.

  52. But I'm not going to talk just about judgment this morning

  53. in the sense of just explaining it again and saying this is what God is doing.

  54. This morning, as we look at verses, or at chapters 15 and 16,

  55. I want to ask this question.

  56. How does God want us to respond to the truth of God's judgment?

  57. What does He call us to do, or how does He expect us to respond?

  58. Because remember, this whole book of Revelation was written to churches who were suffering

  59. with a pastoral intent.

  60. There was a goal, there was a hope that this book would minister to people

  61. and cause them to respond in certain ways.

  62. And so that's the question I want to ask as we look at this passage this morning.

  63. We're going to look at Revelations chapter 15 and 16.

    Revelation 15 chapter mention

  64. If you're following along in the Pew Bibles, it's page 973.

  65. So if you want to turn there, and just to remind you, if you're visiting

  66. or if you forgot from last week, which sometimes happens to us,

  67. chapters 12 through 14, right before this, we saw this picture

  68. that reminded us that the whole world is in a spiritual war,

  69. that there are those who are God's enemies that seek to destroy God's people

  70. and to resist His kingdom and to build their own kingdoms economically, spiritually, politically,

  71. and these stand up in rebellion against and excluding of God,

  72. and that this battle is fierce,

  73. but that in the end, God will have an ultimate victory.

  74. And then we come to chapters 15 and 16,

  75. and as we'll see, it's a picture of judgment where you have seven things.

  76. And we've seen this before, haven't we?

  77. In 6 through 8, we have had seven seals.

  78. In 8 through 11, we've had seven trumpets.

  79. And now we have seven bowls that depict God's response to this cry,

  80. deliver us, God's work of judgment on the earth.

  81. So, the question, how do we respond to God's judgment?

  82. If you're taking notes, here's our outline this morning.

  83. First, we are to celebrate God's response of judgment.

  84. Second, we are to tremble at God's response of judgment.

  85. And thirdly, we are to choose in response to God's judgment.

  86. So, let's look at these passages.

  87. We're going to walk through the passage together.

  88. Hopefully, you will see why I think this is what God is doing

  89. and how He wants us to respond to His Word as we read this chapter.

  90. So, Revelation chapter 15, starting in verse 1.

    Revelation 15 chapter mention

  91. Let's read this together.

  92. And they sang the song of Moses, the servant of God,

  93. and the song of the Lamb, saying,

  94. Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God, the Almighty.

  95. Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations.

  96. Who will not fear, O God, and glorify your name?

  97. For you alone are holy.

  98. All nations will come and worship you,

  99. for your righteous acts have been revealed.

  100. After this, I looked, and the sanctuary of the tent of witness,

  101. and heaven was opened, and out of the sanctuary came

  102. the seven angels with the seven plagues,

  103. clothed in pure bright linen,

  104. with gold sashes around their chests.

  105. And one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels

  106. seven golden bowls, full of the wrath of God

  107. who lives forever and ever.

  108. And the sanctuary was filled with smoke from the glory of God

  109. and from his power, and no one could enter the sanctuary

  110. until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.

  111. What I want you to see in this first chapter,

  112. this first section that we're looking at today,

  113. is that we are actually called to celebrate

  114. in response to God's judgment.

  115. Why do I say that?

  116. Well, let me walk through the passage, help you see it.

  117. Verse one is kind of an introductory section,

  118. and then two through four is almost like an interlude,

  119. and then five through eight finishes what we see in verse one.

  120. And we see this picture of, in the heavenly temple,

  121. angels carrying bowls.

  122. And in verse one, it says these bowls are the plagues,

  123. which would remind us immediately of Egypt

  124. and God's judgment on Egypt,

  125. where he brought ten plagues

  126. in order to deliver the people of Israel from them, right?

  127. So these bowls are plagues

  128. that then we will see later are full of God's wrath.

  129. Now, we've seen bowls before in Revelation.

  130. Perhaps you haven't remembered this,

  131. so let me remind you.

  132. In Revelation 5,

  133. as we saw this grand picture of the throne room again,

  134. there were bowls.

  135. Jesus takes the scroll,

  136. and it says this,

  137. and when Jesus had taken the scroll,

  138. the four creatures and the 24 elders

  139. fell down before the lamb,

  140. each holding a harp,

  141. and golden bowls full of incense,

  142. which are the prayers of the saints.

  143. The bowls,

  144. which are now coming out of the temple

  145. with full of wrath,

  146. were the bowls that went into the temple,

  147. full of the prayers of the saints of God.

  148. And I believe that the writer is pulling hard

  149. on the imagery of the Exodus

  150. so that we understand what's going on here.

  151. Just as in Exodus,

  152. the people of God cried out,

  153. and God heard their cries

  154. and responded with plagues of judgment

  155. in order to deliver them,

  156. so also we see this picture of,

  157. in response to the prayers of the saints

  158. being lifted up to God

  159. in these golden bowls.

  160. These golden bowls are now coming back

  161. filled with the wrath of God,

  162. the judgment of God

  163. against his enemies.

  164. Why else do I say this?

  165. Because it makes sense of verses 2 through 4.

  166. Because 2 through 4 is a weird interlude

  167. in the middle of this, isn't it?

  168. Unless, as Nancy Guthrie

  169. so helpfully pointed out,

  170. this is a picture

  171. that's like the people of God.

  172. Because you know the story of Exodus, right?

  173. God had delivered his people from slavery.

  174. They were on their way to the Promised Land.

  175. They were going towards the Red Sea.

  176. Pharaoh changed his mind.

  177. He said,

  178. I don't want to let them go.

  179. He sent his army of chariots after them.

  180. They were trapped between the army of Pharaoh

  181. and the Red Sea.

  182. And God miraculously opened a way

  183. through the Red Sea

  184. for the people of God to be delivered.

  185. And then, just as miraculously,

  186. brought the sea back down

  187. when the army of Pharaoh

  188. tried to follow them

  189. through that path of deliverance.

  190. And they were destroyed.

  191. And imagine,

  192. and this is where the movie

  193. does a beautiful picture of this as well.

  194. Imagine the people of God

  195. standing on the shores of the Red Sea

  196. as the detritus from Pharaoh's army

  197. floated to the surface of the Red Sea.

  198. Maybe a cloth here,

  199. something there.

  200. Do you think they said,

  201. wow, God's wrath is really terrible.

  202. I don't know if I really want to believe

  203. in a God who would deliver people like that.

  204. It seems really mean.

  205. No.

  206. No.

  207. Because in Exodus 15,

  208. what they did

  209. is they sang

  210. and they celebrated

  211. because they had cried out to God

  212. and God had answered their prayers.

  213. And He had done so in righteousness

  214. and in goodness.

  215. And He had freed them

  216. from slavery and oppression.

  217. And Moses sang a song of deliverance.

  218. And this is what chapter 15 is about.

  219. The picture of this cry coming up

  220. and then God responding.

  221. But we're meant to hear this story

  222. so that we can take in

  223. what it was that Israel did

  224. when it responded.

  225. Because this is what we see

  226. the saints doing in verse 15.

  227. With the same harps,

  228. with a song of Moses in their mouth,

  229. they sing praises to God.

  230. Now, when I was a new believer

  231. and went off to college

  232. back in the 80s,

  233. there was a praise song

  234. that we used to sing.

  235. I will sing unto the Lord

  236. for He has triumphed gloriously.

  237. The horse and rider

  238. thrown into the sea.

  239. It was really odd to me.

  240. I was a fairly new believer

  241. and I was like,

  242. okay,

  243. the Lord my God,

  244. my strength,

  245. my song

  246. has now become my victory.

  247. Anyway,

  248. I can keep going,

  249. but I won't.

  250. But it's Exodus 15

  251. just put into a 1980s

  252. Maranatha praise chorus

  253. that you could do

  254. in three-part harmony in rounds,

  255. which is really cool.

  256. But it was a celebration

  257. of God being the God

  258. who vindicates.

  259. Look at what they sang

  260. as you see in verses 3 and 4.

  261. Great and amazing are you deeds,

  262. O Lord God Almighty.

  263. Just and true are your ways,

  264. O King of the nations.

  265. Who will not fear,

  266. O Lord,

  267. and glorify your name?

  268. For you alone are holy

  269. and all nations will come

  270. and worship you

  271. because your righteous acts

  272. have been revealed.

  273. God's judgment

  274. in the eyes of His people

  275. are meant to be seen

  276. as righteous acts

  277. that we celebrate.

  278. Now look,

  279. God does not rejoice

  280. in the death of the wicked.

  281. Right?

  282. We know this in Scripture.

  283. We don't.

  284. So we need to be careful

  285. to not misapply this.

  286. But there is meant to be

  287. in the church

  288. a tone of celebration.

  289. We know that we are aligned

  290. with the God

  291. who will ultimately have

  292. the victory.

  293. And this is a good thing.

  294. And we in the West,

  295. when we sit

  296. in our comfortable churches

  297. without persecution

  298. and without cost

  299. and without suffering,

  300. can wrestle with,

  301. oh, does this seem good?

  302. But I promise you

  303. that if you go to other parts

  304. of the world

  305. where the church

  306. is facing active persecution,

  307. they rejoice

  308. in the judgment of God.

  309. They rejoice

  310. in His suffering.

  311. They know that their suffering

  312. will not last forever

  313. because God will hear

  314. their prayers

  315. and God will respond.

  316. And this

  317. is why we sing, church.

  318. This is why we celebrate.

  319. Because we have a God

  320. who is worth

  321. rejoicing over.

  322. Now look,

  323. there's also time,

  324. there's time in our church

  325. to lament,

  326. to lament about

  327. the brokenness of our world,

  328. to lament about our own sin,

  329. and to confess.

  330. And I don't want to

  331. eradicate that

  332. from the life of our church.

  333. But friends,

  334. maybe we need to sing

  335. a little more loudly

  336. the songs of celebration

  337. and triumph

  338. that God has won the victory.

  339. victory.

  340. But we sing

  341. the song of victory

  342. in the midst of

  343. this age,

  344. not the age to come.

  345. We sing it

  346. when we haven't yet

  347. seen the fullness.

  348. And where we still

  349. need to cry out as well,

  350. God deliver us.

  351. God come in judgment.

  352. Of course,

  353. this is the context

  354. of recognizing

  355. that God

  356. will come in judgment,

  357. is coming in judgment,

  358. has come in judgment

  359. in a fearsome way.

  360. Because this is what

  361. happens in verse 16.

  362. After verse 15,

  363. which is this picture,

  364. right,

  365. of God responding

  366. to the saints,

  367. it is now,

  368. okay,

  369. what happens to those bowls

  370. filled with wrath?

  371. This is what chapter 16

  372. is all about.

  373. So in chapter 16,

  374. we see that we are

  375. to tremble

  376. at God's judgment.

  377. These bowls,

  378. then,

  379. are poured out

  380. sequentially.

  381. The first bowl,

  382. the second bowl,

  383. the third bowl.

  384. Let's read it together,

  385. and then we'll observe.

  386. Then I heard a loud voice

  387. from the temple

  388. telling the seven angels,

  389. go and pour out

  390. on the earth

  391. the seven bowls

  392. of the wrath of God.

  393. So the first angel

  394. went and poured out

  395. his bowl on the earth,

  396. and harmful

  397. and painful sores

  398. came upon the people

  399. who bore the mark

  400. of the beast

  401. and worshipped its image.

  402. The second angel

  403. poured out his bowl

  404. into the sea,

  405. and it became

  406. like the blood

  407. of a corpse,

  408. and every living thing

  409. died that was in the sea.

  410. The third angel

  411. poured out his bowl

  412. into the rivers

  413. and the springs of water,

  414. and they became blood.

  415. And I heard the angel

  416. in charge of the waters

  417. say,

  418. Just are you,

  419. O holy one,

  420. who is and who was,

  421. for you brought

  422. these judgments,

  423. for they have shed

  424. the blood of the saints

  425. and prophets,

  426. and you have given

  427. them blood to drink.

  428. It is what they deserve.

  429. And I heard the altar

  430. saying,

  431. Yes, Lord God,

  432. the Almighty,

  433. true and just

  434. are your judgments.

  435. And the fourth angel

  436. pulled out his bowl

  437. on the sun,

  438. and it was allowed

  439. to scorch the people

  440. with fire.

  441. They were scorched

  442. by the fierce heat,

  443. and they cursed

  444. the name of God

  445. who had power

  446. over these plagues.

  447. They did not repent

  448. and give him glory.

  449. The fifth angel

  450. poured out his bowl

  451. on the throne

  452. of the beast,

  453. and its kingdom

  454. was plunged

  455. into darkness.

  456. People gnawed

  457. their tongues in anguish

  458. and cursed the God

  459. of heaven

  460. for their pain

  461. and sores.

  462. They did not repent

  463. of their deeds.

  464. The sixth angel

  465. poured out his bowl

  466. on the great river Euphrates,

  467. and its waters

  468. were dried up

  469. to prepare the way

  470. for the kings

  471. from the east.

  472. And I saw coming

  473. out of the mouth

  474. of the dragon

  475. and out of the mouth

  476. of the beast

  477. and out of the mouth

  478. of the false prophet

  479. three unclean spirits

  480. like frogs.

  481. They were,

  482. they are demonic

  483. for their demonic spirits

  484. performing signs

  485. who go abroad

  486. to the kings

  487. of the whole world

  488. to assemble them

  489. for battle

  490. on the great day

  491. of God the Almighty.

  492. Behold,

  493. I am coming

  494. like a thief.

  495. Blessed is the one

  496. who stays awake,

  497. keeping his garments on

  498. that he may not

  499. go about naked

  500. and be seen exposed.

  501. And they assembled them

  502. at the place

  503. that in Hebrew

  504. is called Armageddon.

  505. The seventh angel

  506. poured out his bowl

  507. into the air,

  508. and a loud voice

  509. came out of the temple

  510. from the throne

  511. saying,

  512. It is done.

  513. And there were

  514. flashes of lightning,

  515. rumblings,

  516. peals of thunder,

  517. great earthquakes

  518. such as there had

  519. never been since

  520. man was on the earth

  521. so great was that earthquake.

  522. The great city

  523. was split into three parts

  524. and the cities

  525. of the nations fell,

  526. and God remembered

  527. Babylon the great

  528. to make her drain

  529. the cup

  530. of the wine

  531. of the fury

  532. of his wrath.

  533. And every island

  534. fled away

  535. and no mountains

  536. were to be found.

  537. And great hailstones,

  538. about 100 pounds

  539. each,

  540. fell from heaven

  541. on people.

  542. And they cursed God

  543. for the plague of hell

  544. because the plague

  545. was so severe.

  546. So this is a picture

  547. of God pouring out

  548. his wrath.

  549. I want to make

  550. a series of observations

  551. rather than going through them

  552. one by one

  553. and explaining.

  554. I want to make

  555. a series of observations

  556. about the overall effect

  557. of these things.

  558. things.

  559. First is that the judgment

  560. will come on those

  561. who do not worship God.

  562. So we see in the first bowl

  563. those who have

  564. the mark of the beast,

  565. those who do not worship God

  566. but who worship

  567. some other God

  568. or who have the mark

  569. of the beast,

  570. who have set themselves

  571. in the binary

  572. either for God

  573. or against God.

  574. They are in the

  575. against God category.

  576. Those who have worshipped

  577. another God,

  578. those who have

  579. compromised

  580. in order to fit in

  581. with the spirits

  582. of the world,

  583. the economic systems,

  584. the powers,

  585. and not faithfully

  586. stood apart

  587. for the sake of Christ.

  588. So judgments

  589. have come on those

  590. who do not worship God.

  591. They also will come

  592. on all of creation,

  593. both natural and human.

  594. You see the scope of it.

  595. The first one

  596. comes on the earth,

  597. the second one,

  598. the seas,

  599. this third,

  600. the fresh waters,

  601. the fourth,

  602. and we see finally

  603. in the air as well,

  604. we see that there is

  605. this upheaval

  606. of the natural order.

  607. When you get

  608. to the seventh one,

  609. the world itself

  610. seems to be falling apart.

  611. The judgment of God

  612. will be so great

  613. that it will leave

  614. the earth

  615. in a place

  616. where only

  617. the renewal of God

  618. and the recreation

  619. of the world

  620. in the new heavens

  621. and the new earth

  622. could redeem it.

  623. You heard the end

  624. of verse 21.

  625. The plagues

  626. were so severe,

  627. even the natural world

  628. was turned upside down

  629. in this way.

  630. We see in the third bowl

  631. that there is a justice

  632. that is brought

  633. upon those

  634. who persecuted

  635. the church

  636. and God's people.

  637. When you look

  638. at that song

  639. that the angel

  640. in charge of the waters

  641. sing, right,

  642. the waters

  643. that were the lifeblood

  644. of the people

  645. who lived in a dry

  646. and desert area

  647. were turned to blood.

  648. They had nothing

  649. to drink but blood.

  650. Symbolically picturing,

  651. right,

  652. this isn't real.

  653. It wasn't like

  654. all the water

  655. in the Middle East

  656. suddenly turned to blood.

  657. This is a symbol

  658. pointing to the fact

  659. that what they thought

  660. was life

  661. in their persecution

  662. of God's church

  663. now turns to death.

  664. And those who had been

  665. the purveyors of death

  666. now were receiving

  667. that death

  668. in just response.

  669. We see that the powers

  670. that have set themselves up,

  671. the throne of the beast itself,

  672. will be plunged

  673. into darkness

  674. and overthrown.

  675. We see in the sixth bowl

  676. being poured out

  677. the unholy trinity.

  678. If you go back,

  679. this is what we saw

  680. in chapters 12 through 14.

  681. The dragon

  682. and the two beasts,

  683. the one beast

  684. coming from the sea

  685. and then the other beast

  686. which is also here

  687. called the false prophet

  688. coming from the earth.

  689. This unholy trinity

  690. is gathering people

  691. and people have wrestled

  692. a lot with what this means.

  693. They're gathering the kings.

  694. The Euphrates is dried up.

  695. It's probably an image

  696. that's picking on the fact

  697. that the eastern border

  698. of the Roman Empire

  699. was the Euphrates River.

  700. And if that river dried up,

  701. the Parthians would have

  702. a clear road

  703. to invade the Roman Empire.

  704. And that's not what

  705. they were predicting

  706. would happen.

  707. They're saying,

  708. it is like that.

  709. Like the very barrier

  710. that kept you

  711. from your worst enemy

  712. is now going to be dried up

  713. and there is nothing

  714. to hide you.

  715. There is no barrier.

  716. There is no safety for you

  717. in this place.

  718. And it seems that

  719. what's happening

  720. in the midst of that then,

  721. right,

  722. the enemies of God

  723. are gathering

  724. the kingdoms of the earth

  725. to a final battle

  726. against God,

  727. right,

  728. on the great day of God.

  729. The kings of the earth

  730. will gather

  731. under the leadership

  732. of this unholy trinity

  733. and the three spirits,

  734. the unclean spirits

  735. that are like frogs

  736. that would be a stench

  737. to the world

  738. because of their smell.

  739. this is the picture

  740. that we see

  741. in verse six.

  742. And of course,

  743. it ends in Armageddon,

  744. which of course,

  745. we have bad movies about.

  746. We have all sorts of imagery.

  747. What Armageddon,

  748. this picture

  749. of this final battle.

  750. Lots of people

  751. have argued,

  752. have tried to argue,

  753. well,

  754. this is a real place

  755. and this is going to happen

  756. somewhere near

  757. the ancient city

  758. of Megiddo

  759. and on a plane

  760. that we're,

  761. but I don't think

  762. that's actually

  763. what this is.

  764. I think instead

  765. that it's a,

  766. it's another symbol

  767. of a place

  768. because Megiddo

  769. was a place

  770. where the enemies

  771. of God came

  772. and would battle

  773. against Israel

  774. and where this would be.

  775. It was taking this up

  776. as a symbol

  777. to say there will be

  778. a final grand battle.

  779. We don't know

  780. where it will be.

  781. We don't know

  782. when it will be.

  783. Let's not look

  784. for Armageddon

  785. somewhere in the Middle East

  786. but let's recognize

  787. that there will be

  788. a final conflict

  789. that will come

  790. and at the end

  791. as we will see

  792. in chapter 20

  793. there will be

  794. a complete victory

  795. and the enemies

  796. of God

  797. will be defeated.

  798. Another thing

  799. I want to point out

  800. in this

  801. is that the judgments

  802. are total.

  803. If you went back

  804. and you looked through

  805. when you had

  806. seven seals

  807. that were broken

  808. they affected

  809. one quarter

  810. of the earth.

  811. When you had

  812. seven trumpets

  813. that were blown

  814. they affected

  815. one third

  816. of the earth.

  817. And when you come here

  818. when the bowls

  819. are poured out

  820. they are poured out

  821. on the whole earth.

  822. There's no limiting

  823. no restraint.

  824. This is

  825. I believe

  826. what it means

  827. in chapter 15

  828. verse 1

  829. when it says

  830. these are the last

  831. plagues

  832. when the wrath

  833. of God

  834. is finished.

  835. Now we've been

  836. telling you

  837. that we believe

  838. that these are

  839. pictures

  840. that are true

  841. that were true

  842. in the first century

  843. that are true

  844. throughout the church age

  845. and that have

  846. a particular truth

  847. an expression

  848. that will still

  849. yet to come

  850. in the future.

  851. And this is where

  852. we see this

  853. maybe most clearly

  854. because these

  855. plagues

  856. these judgments

  857. seem to be

  858. ratcheting up.

  859. The seals

  860. are bad

  861. the trumpets

  862. are worse

  863. and here the bowls

  864. are the most fierce

  865. and the most extreme

  866. and this is the fullness

  867. the picture

  868. of the fullness

  869. of God's wrath

  870. poured out

  871. in judgment

  872. upon the world

  873. and it will affect all

  874. and it is inescapable.

  875. And I believe

  876. the proper response

  877. is to tremble.

  878. Do you remember

  879. when you were in high school

  880. was there a coach

  881. or a teacher

  882. that you never wanted

  883. to run into

  884. in the hallway

  885. because even if you

  886. weren't doing something wrong

  887. you'd be afraid

  888. that you were going

  889. to get in trouble

  890. because they were

  891. the ones who always came

  892. and brought the rules

  893. and made justice happen.

  894. For me it was

  895. my lacrosse coach

  896. Mr. Diven.

  897. He wasn't in the hallways

  898. very much

  899. but man when you

  900. when you got sideways

  901. with him

  902. it was terrible.

  903. You just did not

  904. want to do that.

  905. Friends

  906. we need to recognize

  907. oh so

  908. so when we have

  909. those people

  910. we tremble

  911. when we see them coming

  912. we start to be afraid.

  913. Oh no I'm in trouble.

  914. Friends this is just a taste.

  915. God's judgment

  916. will be

  917. immeasurably worse

  918. than what Mr. Diven

  919. could have done to me.

  920. And his judgment

  921. is fearsome

  922. and he has

  923. and he is

  924. and he will be

  925. judging the world

  926. and we are to tremble

  927. even as we are

  928. to celebrate it

  929. we are also

  930. to tremble

  931. before his righteous

  932. holy

  933. just

  934. power.

  935. But as we see

  936. these things

  937. coming together

  938. then

  939. it is as

  940. trembling people

  941. that we see

  942. the third response

  943. in this text

  944. because I believe

  945. that the third way

  946. that we are meant

  947. to respond to this text

  948. is to choose.

  949. we can either

  950. curse God

  951. or we can repent

  952. and trust in him.

  953. Now

  954. it may not be obvious

  955. in this

  956. because there is no call

  957. to repentance

  958. in this passage.

  959. There is no clear sense

  960. in fact

  961. if anything

  962. there is more of a fear

  963. but one of the things

  964. you see is that

  965. the judgment of God

  966. clearly

  967. reveals our hearts

  968. and our choice

  969. our decision

  970. of how we will respond

  971. to the God

  972. of the universe.

  973. Right?

  974. We see this

  975. in chapter 16

  976. verse 9

  977. and 11

  978. where it says

  979. and they cursed

  980. God for the plagues

  981. and they did not

  982. repent.

  983. So the judgments

  984. revealed the hearts

  985. of those

  986. who were so hardened

  987. that they would not

  988. respond.

  989. And we see this

  990. of course

  991. with the echoes

  992. of the Exodus story.

  993. Right?

  994. Where God would

  995. bring a plague

  996. and Pharaoh

  997. would repent

  998. and then he changed

  999. his mind.

  1000. And then he would

  1001. repent

  1002. and then he would

  1003. harden his heart

  1004. again and change

  1005. his mind.

  1006. And so the echoes

  1007. of the Exodus story

  1008. come that these

  1009. judgments are meant

  1010. to call us

  1011. to repentance

  1012. but also it reveals

  1013. the hardness

  1014. of our hearts

  1015. and how easily

  1016. we harden ourselves

  1017. against God

  1018. and reject him

  1019. rather than receive him.

  1020. How often we

  1021. choose to love

  1022. our sin

  1023. rather than

  1024. repenting of it.

  1025. how often

  1026. we will love

  1027. the world

  1028. rather than

  1029. God himself.

  1030. We also see

  1031. this repentance

  1032. theme coming

  1033. out of chapter 14

  1034. that Pastor Nick

  1035. preached on last week

  1036. which was this

  1037. grand reaping

  1038. this grand

  1039. there were two results

  1040. coming out

  1041. some will be gathered

  1042. to God

  1043. for this celebration

  1044. and victory

  1045. in this new life

  1046. and others

  1047. will be gathered

  1048. for the most

  1049. fearsome of judgments.

  1050. But I think

  1051. verse 15

  1052. is the reason

  1053. why I think

  1054. most clearly

  1055. there's a call

  1056. to repentance

  1057. in this passage.

  1058. Did you hear it?

1059. It's so out of step.

  1060. It feels like

  1061. an interlude.

  1062. My Bible

  1063. has it in

  1064. parentheses

  1065. and in red

  1066. and almost set apart.

  1067. Right?

  1068. Why is verse 15

  1069. in there?

  1070. Jesus saying

  1071. behold I come

  1072. like a thief.

  1073. Why?

  1074. It's there to

  1075. remind us

  1076. that

  1077. this promise

  1078. of the coming

  1079. judgment of God

  1080. will come

  1081. when we don't

  1082. expect it.

  1083. It will come

  1084. in a surprising

  1085. way

  1086. at a surprising

  1087. time.

  1088. And the

  1089. undergirding

  1090. thought

  1091. in that

  1092. throughout

  1093. the New Testament

  1094. is

  1095. therefore

  1096. today

  1097. while it is

  1098. still day

  1099. today

  1100. while you

  1101. still have

  1102. a choice

  1103. today

  1104. while you

  1105. can still

  1106. respond

  1107. because you

  1108. know

  1109. that

  1110. that

  1111. hundred

  1112. pound

  1113. hailstones

  1114. haven't yet

  1115. rained upon

  1116. the earth

  1117. and destroyed

  1118. everything.

  1119. Today

  1120. you have a

  1121. choice

  1122. to turn

  1123. again

  1124. to him.

  1125. And we

  1126. know that

  1127. this book

  1128. was written

  1129. to a church

  1130. that was

  1131. meant to

  1132. comfort

  1133. them

  1134. in the

  1135. midst

  1136. of the

  1137. trials

  1138. but also

  1139. to call

  1140. them

  1141. to

  1142. holiness

  1143. and holy

  1144. living

  1145. and living

  1146. wholehearted

  1147. for them.

  1148. And just

  1149. like there

  1150. probably is

  1151. today in

  1152. those churches

  1153. there would

  1154. have been

  1155. some

  1156. who would

  1157. have had

  1158. to still

  1159. think

  1160. through

  1161. where does

  1162. my allegiance

  1163. lie?

  1164. Do I bear

  1165. the mark

  1166. of the beast

  1167. or do I

  1168. bear the name

  1169. of Jesus

  1170. on my

  1171. forehead?

  1172. Where do

  1173. I stand?

  1174. Because at

  1175. the end

  1176. of the day

  1177. the book

  1178. of Revelation

  1179. reminds us

  1180. there are

  1181. only two

  1182. camps

  1183. those who

  1184. are in

  1185. Christ

  1186. and those

  1187. who are

  1188. not

  1189. and those

  1190. who are

  1191. not in

  1192. Christ

  1193. will face

  1194. this fearsome

  1195. judgment

  1196. without any

  1197. protection.

  1198. They will

  1199. as it says

  1200. in verses

  1201. in verse

  1202. eight

  1203. or nineteen

  1204. they will

  1205. drink the

  1206. cup

  1207. of God's

  1208. wrath.

  1209. But friends

  1210. we have

  1211. one

  1212. who has

  1213. drunk

  1214. that

  1215. cup

  1216. of

  1217. wrath

  1218. for

  1219. us.

  1220. This is

  1221. what

  1222. Jesus

  1223. has

  1224. come

  1225. to

  1226. do.

  1227. Remember

  1228. in the

  1229. Garden

  1230. of

  1231. Gethsemane

  1232. he asked

  1233. to be

  1234. spared

  1235. this

  1236. cup

  1237. a cup

  1238. that he

  1239. did not

  1240. deserve

  1241. because

  1242. he had

  1243. no

  1244. sin

  1245. but he

  1246. said

  1247. not my

  1248. will

  1249. but your

  1250. will be

  1251. done

  1252. oh

  1253. Lord

  1254. and so

  1255. he went

  1256. to the

  1257. cross

  1258. and he

  1259. suffered

  1260. and he

  1261. died

  1262. bearing

  1263. the

  1264. penalty

  1265. of

  1266. our

  1267. sins

  1268. bearing

  1269. the

  1270. wrath

  1271. of

  1272. God

  1273. against

  1274. unrighteousness

  1275. that we

  1276. have done

  1277. when he

  1278. died on

  1279. the cross

  1280. he did

  1281. not shrink

  1282. back but

  1283. he went

  1284. into the

  1285. judgment

  1286. and bore

  1287. it for

  1288. us

  1289. and when

  1290. he did

  1291. so the

  1292. signs

  1293. that we

  1294. see at

  1295. the end

  1296. of the

  1297. seventh

  1298. bowl

  1299. thunder

  1300. and lightning

  1301. and skies

  1302. growing

  1303. dark

  1304. and the

  1305. earth

  1306. shaking

  1307. this is

  1308. what happened

  1309. to Jesus

  1310. for us

  1311. and at

  1312. the end

  1313. he cried

  1314. it is

  1315. finished

  1316. God

  1317. drank

  1318. this cup

  1319. for us

  1320. so that

  1321. we won't

  1322. have to

  1323. on that

  1324. day

  1325. verse 17

  1326. it says

  1327. in the

  1328. final bowl

  1329. it is

  1330. done

  1331. time

  1332. will come

  1333. when there

  1334. will be

  1335. no more

  1336. choice

  1337. friends

  1338. we don't

  1339. usually do

  1340. this at

  1341. Trinity

  1342. but

  1343. given this

  1344. message

  1345. I think

  1346. it's worth

  1347. doing

  1348. today

  1349. we don't

  1350. want to

  1351. be

  1352. emotional

  1353. but we

  1354. do want

  1355. to say

  1356. that the

  1357. gospel of

  1358. Jesus Christ

  1359. calls for

  1360. a response

  1361. today

  1362. is the

  1363. day

  1364. whom

  1365. will you

  1366. serve

  1367. who

  1368. will you

  1369. trust

  1370. in

  1371. will you

  1372. confess

  1373. that you

  1374. are a

  1375. sinner

  1376. who needs

  1377. rescuing

  1378. from the

  1379. judgment

  1380. of God

  1381. and that

  1382. Jesus has

  1383. done all

  1384. that you

  1385. need

  1386. to be

  1387. rescued

  1388. from that

  1389. and if

  1390. you confess

  1391. those things

  1392. today

  1393. and put

  1394. your trust

  1395. for your

  1396. spiritual

  1397. standing

  1398. for God

  1399. for forgiveness

  1400. of sins

  1401. and for new

  1402. spiritual life

  1403. today can be

  1404. the day

  1405. that you

  1406. will know

  1407. and face

  1408. the day

  1409. of judgment

  1410. that's coming

  1411. with confidence

  1412. and celebration

  1413. not in

  1414. trembling

  1415. and in

  1416. fear

  1417. I was a little

  1418. afraid to do

  1419. this because

  1420. some people

  1421. think the

  1422. whole book

  1423. of Revelation

  1424. is about

  1425. you gotta

  1426. make a

  1427. decision

  1428. you gotta

  1429. choose

  1430. but you

  1431. know what

  1432. today's

  1433. the day

  1434. today's

  1435. the day

  1436. to choose

  1437. if you're

  1438. here and

  1439. you're

  1440. wondering

  1441. where do

  1442. I stand

  1443. implore you

  1444. today

  1445. choose

  1446. Christ

  1447. so let's

  1448. pray together

  1449. Lord as we

  1450. come together

  1451. before you

  1452. Lord we

  1453. this is a

  1454. fearsome

  1455. truth

  1456. and you

  1457. are a

  1458. holy God

  1459. and Lord we

  1460. cry out

  1461. deliver us

  1462. from our

  1463. sin

  1464. deliver us

  1465. from the

  1466. darkness

  1467. in our

  1468. own

  1469. hearts

  1470. Lord I

  1471. pray for

  1472. those now

  1473. today who

  1474. are here

  1475. who have

  1476. not trusted

  1477. in Jesus

  1478. Lord give

  1479. them the

  1480. grace to

  1481. respond to

  1482. you

  1483. let them

  1484. say now

  1485. I believe

  1486. in Jesus

  1487. by his

  1488. death on

  1489. the cross

  1490. he has

  1491. saved me

  1492. from my

  1493. sin

  1494. I believe

  1495. that

  1496. and Lord

  1497. for those

  1498. who have

  1499. wandered

  1500. from faith

  1501. who have

  1502. compromised

  1503. and loved

  1504. the world

  1505. rather than

  1506. following

  1507. Christ

  1508. today Lord

  1509. give them

  1510. strength

  1511. to return

  1512. to Christ

  1513. in faith

  1514. to stand

  1515. in the

  1516. grace

  1517. of Jesus

  1518. for all

  1519. who have

  1520. believed

  1521. in him

  1522. and Lord

  1523. for those

  1524. of us

  1525. who today

  1526. are trusting

  1527. in you

  1528. Lord fill

  1529. our hearts

  1530. with a

  1531. song

  1532. of celebration

  1533. that you

  1534. are a

  1535. just

  1536. and holy

  1537. God

  1538. who has

  1539. and will

  1540. work your

  1541. work of

  1542. redemption

  1543. for your

  1544. glory

  1545. and for

  1546. our good

  1547. today

  1548. Lord

  1549. let today

  1550. be the

  1551. day

  1552. that we

  1553. respond to

  1554. you

  1555. with clarity

  1556. and with

  1557. faith

  1558. we pray

  1559. this in

  1560. Jesus name

  1561. amen
