  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see you all. I did want to follow up on Nick's announcement

  2. about our upcoming sabbatical. One of the things I've become aware of is that I will be on

  3. sabbatical in the season where Trinity says goodbye to a lot of people. And so I want to

  4. invite those of you, if you are moving on at the end of this spring or this summer,

  5. whether for work or for school, would love to just say goodbye to you before I disappear

  6. and before then you disappear, and we don't have a chance to do that. So I did want to just

  7. acknowledge that. We'll be at the potluck all day. So I would love to see you if you're here and are

  8. able to do that. And then I will be here for the next two Sundays as well, just so you know.

  9. Well, as Pastor Nick has said, today is Palm Sunday, the day that we remember back in the

  10. first century when Jesus entered into Jerusalem to great acclaim where the crowds lay down their

  11. cloaks before him and palm branches on the road in a royal welcome and cried out,

  12. Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. They welcomed him with great joy

  13. because they saw a king.

  14. Because they saw someone who could bring them hope. And they needed that king because they didn't have

  15. one. You see, in the first century in the people of Israel, they knew because they had heard the stories

  16. what the kingdom of David looked like and its greatness. And they had read the prophets and the

  17. promises of a kingdom that would still come, a kingdom of righteousness and justice, a kingdom of peace,

  18. a kingdom where the righteousness, the goodness of God would be exalted through a kingdom in the world.

  19. But instead of that, they were experiencing almost the opposite.

  20. They were not a sovereign nation state. They were oppressed in a vassal state to Rome.

  21. They didn't experience righteousness and spiritual fervor, but instead had division and frailty.

  22. And they longed for a king who would come to make things right and bring the kingdom that their hearts longed for.

  23. And friends, we have a similar longing in our hearts, if we're honest, I believe.

  24. Because we want that kingdom to come too.

  25. We want a kingdom to come so that the world will be a place of righteousness and justice,

  26. a place of prosperity and abundance.

  27. And we want a place of peace and goodness and beauty.

  28. And we struggle, don't we?

  29. Because we feel hopeless with that longing.

  30. We see the brokenness of politics and of social movements to actually right the ship and make it a better world.

  31. We see the ongoing effects of sin and death and the ravages of war.

  32. And we despair.

  33. And not just globally and structurally, but personally.

  34. Our own lives don't have the kingdom that we long for.

  35. Our relationships are broken and strained and fraught.

  36. And they fail.

  37. Our souls are prone to wander from the things that we know are good and right.

  38. And to love things that bring us destruction.

  39. All for the sake of a momentary hit of pleasure.

  40. We know as we gather here on Sunday that our worship is not as single-minded,

  41. is not as wholehearted, is not as joyful as it could be.

  42. And we want a king to come and to make it better.

  43. We want a king to come to make it right.

  44. This leads us to our passage this morning.

  45. We're going to be looking in the Old Testament.

  46. We're going to be looking in the prophet Zechariah.

  47. If you're using a pew Bible, it's page 748.

  48. And I'm telling you now, because Zechariah is one of the minor prophets,

  49. it's not always easy to find in your Bible.

  50. So you have a few minutes to look for it while we talk about it a little bit.

  51. Zechariah was a prophet who prophesied after the Babylonian exile.

  52. If you remember, King David, the pinnacle of the kingdom,

  53. and then it all went downhill from there.

  54. Divided kingdom.

  55. The northern kingdom fell.

  56. The southern kingdom fell into exile.

  57. Seventy years of exile.

  58. And then beyond that, then through God's miraculous work,

  59. the Jews were able to return to Palestine and reestablish Jerusalem

  60. and begin to build its walls and begin to build the temple.

  61. But in that time, just like in the first century,

  62. and maybe just like today, there was a longing

  63. because it wasn't the fullness of the restoration of the kingdom

  64. that they longed for.

  65. Remember, the ESV Study Bible, which, by the way, is a great resource,

  66. just a recommendation, that's a freebie.

  67. But the ESV Study Bible gives this in its introduction to Zechariah.

  68. It says, there was little evidence in 520 BC

  69. of the kind of transformation of the state of things

  70. that earlier prophets had anticipated,

  71. whether externally in a restoration of Jewish sovereignty

  72. or internally in a moral reformation of the people.

  73. Instead of returning to Palestine gloriously,

  74. they returned.

  75. And if you remember, when they built the temple,

  76. they wept because it was small and puny

  77. compared to the glory of what they had seen before.

  78. And they longed for the king to come

  79. and to bring his kingdom.

  80. And in the midst of that longing,

  81. Zechariah, well, Zechariah, this is a big book.

  82. There's lots there I'm not going to talk about.

  83. But in this passage today, Zechariah gives us a promise

  84. that king is coming.

  85. And he gives us a picture of what kind of king

  86. God is going to bring to bring about his kingdom.

  87. So that's what we're going to look at today.

  88. Let's read Zechariah.

  89. Zechariah chapter 9.

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  90. We're looking at 9 verses 9 through 17.

  91. All right.

  92. Here's our passage for this morning.

  93. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion.

  94. Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem.

  95. Behold, your king is coming to you.

  96. Righteous and having salvation is he.

  97. Humble and mounted on a donkey,

  98. on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

  99. I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim

  100. and the war horse from Jerusalem.

  101. And the battle bow shall be cut off

  102. and he shall speak peace to the nations.

  103. His rule shall be from sea to sea

  104. and from the river to the ends of the earth.

  105. As for you also,

  106. because of the blood of my covenant with you,

  107. I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.

  108. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope.

  109. Today declare that I will restore to you double.

  110. For I have bent Judah as my bow.

  111. I have made Ephraim its arrow.

  112. I will stir up your sons, O Zion,

  113. against your sons, O Greece,

  114. and wield you like a warrior's sword.

  115. Then the Lord will appear over them

  116. and his arrow will go forth like lightning.

  117. And the Lord God will sound the trumpet

  118. and will march forth in the whirlwinds of the south.

  119. The Lord of hosts will protect them

  120. and they shall devour and tread down the sling stones.

  121. And they shall drink and roar as if drunk with wine

  122. and be full like a bowl,

  123. drenched like the corners of the altar.

  124. On that day,

  125. the Lord their God will save them

  126. as the flock of his people.

  127. For like the jewels of a crown,

  128. they shall shine on his land.

  129. For how great is his goodness

  130. and how great is his beauty.

  131. Grain shall make the young men flourish

  132. and new wine the young women.

  133. Let's pray together and ask for God's help.

  134. Lord, we thank you for this word.

  135. Lord, we thank you for the encouragement

  136. and the hope that it brings us.

  137. Lord, we pray that as we look into it,

  138. this morning and consider what it means for us, Lord,

  139. that you would open our minds

  140. to understand your word,

  141. that you would open our wills

  142. so that we might submit to your word

  143. and open our hearts

  144. that we might delight in your word this morning.

  145. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  146. Amen.

  147. What kind of king will God send

  148. to bring his kingdom?

  149. Well, first, he is a king

  150. who will come in humility.

  151. In this first section,

  152. we see in verses 9 through 9 and 10,

  153. we see how Jesus comes.

  154. And, you know, remarkably,

  155. when you look through it,

  156. particularly as you look at verses,

  157. verse 10,

  158. you think this is the king

  159. that everyone wants, right?

  160. This is a king.

  161. He says,

  162. this is your king.

  163. He's coming for you.

  164. He is a king

  165. who will bring righteousness.

  166. That means that everything he does

  167. is going to be evidently true

  168. and good and right.

  169. It will be righteous

  170. in the sense of just.

  171. It will be righteous

  172. in the sense of morally correct.

  173. It will be righteous

  174. in the sense of bringing order

  175. in a good and life-giving way.

  176. Not only does he have righteousness,

  177. but he has salvation.

  178. He will break the powers of oppression

  179. and bring freedom.

  180. He is a warrior king

  181. who will come and make victory.

  182. This is what verse 11 is telling us.

  183. When you look at verse 11,

  184. I'm sorry, verse 10.

  185. Verse 10, he's saying,

  186. I will cut off the chariot

  187. and break the bow.

  188. What he's saying is,

  189. you, Israel,

  190. will no longer need

  191. to have your own weapons of warfare.

  192. With Ephraim representing

  193. the northern part of the nation of Israel

  194. and Judah being the south,

  195. saying none of you

  196. are going to need your weapons anymore

  197. because the king will come

  198. and he will have all the power he needs

  199. to bring the victory all by himself.

  200. And so there is this,

  201. and it says,

  202. and when he comes,

  203. he will bring global peace, right?

  204. He will speak peace to the nations,

  205. all of them,

  206. and from one sea to the other,

  207. from the river to the,

  208. the whole world will be brought

  209. under his rule in peace.

  210. And this is a pretty awesome kind of king.

  211. This is the one that we long for, isn't it?

  212. Right?

  213. And when you think about what,

  214. in the first century,

  215. what the hopes were of the people there,

  216. they wanted a king

  217. who's going to ride into Jerusalem

  218. like the emperors of Rome

  219. would ride into Rome

  220. after a military conquest

  221. on a great white steed

  222. armed to the hilt

  223. with an army at his back

  224. bringing the prisoners in tow.

  225. And it was a picture of power

  226. and might and strength.

  227. And yet,

  228. this king doesn't come

  229. on a great white steed,

  230. does he?

  231. Verse nine again.

  232. Rejoice and shout aloud

  233. because your king has come

  234. riding on a donkey.

  235. A donkey is a symbol of peace.

  236. As a steed,

  237. someone who would ride a donkey

  238. would be a peacemaker.

  239. And it's very clear from the text.

  240. Humble and mounted on a donkey.

  241. The king who comes,

  242. the one who's going to conquer,

  243. does not come like the kings of this world,

  244. wielding a sword,

  245. beating down his foes.

  246. Now look,

  247. let me just give a caveat

  248. because we're in the book of Revelation

  249. in our series.

  250. And there is a day

  251. when these victories will happen.

  252. There is a time

  253. when Jesus will come

  254. and he's going to bring that,

  255. right?

  256. And the imagery in Revelation

  257. points us and reminds us

  258. that he does have power

  259. and he can do those things.

  260. And yet,

  261. when he comes to do

  262. his signature,

  263. his key,

  264. his most important,

  265. the pinnacle of the work of redemption

  266. that he's going to do as a king,

  267. how does he come?

  268. He comes on a donkey.

  269. Humble.

  270. This is the beauty,

  271. my friends,

  272. of the Christian gospel

  273. is that when Jesus came,

  274. he didn't come

  275. with great fanfare.

  276. He came in humility

  277. and in weakness

  278. and in obscurity.

  279. and he didn't come

  280. to the great people

  281. and overcome them

  282. or win them,

  283. but he came to the poor

  284. and to the outsiders

  285. and he said,

  286. you come,

  287. follow me.

  288. One commentator

  289. on Zechariah

  290. put it this way,

  291. the lowly scene

  292. verse 9 creates

  293. encapsulates the nature

  294. of the kingdom

  295. that Christ established.

  296. The suffering,

  297. humiliation,

  298. and death

  299. that unfolded

  300. on the palm-strewn road

  301. he traveled

  302. would eventuate

  303. in the conquest

  304. of countless human hearts

  305. and in his ultimate rule

  306. over a new heavens

  307. and a new earth.

  308. Little did the onlookers,

  309. the triumphal entry of Christ

  310. into Jerusalem

  311. that first Palm Sunday

  312. understand the full import

  313. of what they were witnessing.

  314. While many shouted,

  315. Hosanna,

  316. some must have looked

  317. and wondered,

  318. why is he riding

  319. on a donkey?

  320. But it shouldn't be a surprise.

  321. Do you remember

  322. what Jesus said

  323. to his disciples

  324. when they were fighting

  325. over who gets to sit

  326. at the right hand

  327. and the left,

  328. who gets the positions

  329. of power with him,

  330. who gets to ride

  331. his coattails

  332. into the White House?

  333. Jesus called to them

  334. and said,

  335. you know that the rulers

  336. of the Gentiles

  337. lord it over them

  338. and the great ones

  339. exercise authority

  340. over them.

  341. It shall not be so

  342. among you,

  343. but whoever would be great

  344. among you

  345. must be your servant

  346. and whoever would be first

  347. among you

  348. must be your slave

  349. even as the Son of Man

  350. came.

  351. not to be served,

  352. but to serve

  353. and to give his life

  354. a ransom for many.

  355. So this is the first thing

  356. that Zechariah points out.

  357. What kind of king is he?

  358. He is a humble king

  359. who comes not in greatness,

  360. but in weakness.

  361. Of course,

  362. we know that there's more

  363. than this.

  364. We know that he's able

  365. to save.

  366. We know that he's able

  367. to deliver.

  368. We've already seen it

  369. mentioned in verse 9.

  370. Verses 11 through 13

  371. help us see more

  372. of how he's going

  373. to do that.

  374. Verse 11, 13

  375. tell us that he's going

  376. to come to save us

  377. through sacrifice.

  378. Verse 11 gives us

  379. the context

  380. of our salvation.

  381. He talks to us

  382. as prisoners, right?

  383. He says,

  384. I will set your prisoners

  385. free from the waterless pit.

  386. Now,

  387. if you've ever been

  388. in the Middle East,

  389. which I haven't,

  390. but as I've been told,

  391. they have these cisterns,

  392. right?

  393. They're big pits

  394. that they do,

  395. and they often

  396. are filled with water

  397. during the rainy season.

  398. It's one of the ways

  399. they keep the water,

  400. and then they preserve it

  401. and use it

  402. as long as it's wet,

  403. right?

  404. But then in the dry season,

  405. it's dry,

  406. and it becomes

  407. this earthen pit

  408. in the ground,

  409. and it turns out

  410. it's a very useful place

  411. to keep prisoners

  412. when you don't have a jail.

  413. And so,

  414. the picture here

  415. is people

  416. who've been thrown

  417. into an earthen pit

  418. that they can't

  419. climb out of.

  420. Remember Joseph

  421. when his brothers

  422. threw him in a pit?

  423. I think it's the same

  424. kind of pit here.

  425. So,

  426. so,

  427. so it's talking

  428. about those

  429. who are stuck

  430. in a huge dry well,

  431. left there

  432. to suffer

  433. and to die.

  434. It would be

  435. a terrifying place

  436. to be.

  437. I was reading

  438. earlier this year

  439. an account

  440. of a man

  441. who survived

  442. the death camps

  443. as a Jewish man

  444. in the,

  445. during World War II

  446. in Germany.

  447. and when he describes

  448. the despair

  449. and the hopelessness

  450. of the prisoners

  451. and many of them

  452. who,

  453. who literally died

  454. from lack of hope

  455. as much as abuse

  456. or anything else.

  457. I think this is what

  458. Zechariah is speaking

  459. to as he talks

  460. about the prisoners

  461. who were thrown

  462. into the waterless pit,

  463. longing for freedom

  464. and wondering

  465. how,

  466. how are we going

  467. to be freed?

  468. How do we,

  469. how do we get out

  470. of this pit?

  471. How do we get out

  472. of this prison?

  473. We can't save ourselves.

  474. And friends,

  475. before we go on

  476. and talk about

  477. how this passage

  478. describes how the king

  479. saves us,

  480. let us recognize

  481. that the Bible

  482. talks about

  483. a greater slavery

  484. and a greater prison

  485. that we all live in.

  486. And this is the prison

  487. of sin.

  488. Since Adam and Eve

  489. fell in the garden,

  490. we have all been stained

  491. and infused

  492. with sin.

  493. and it leaves us

  494. helpless

  495. to experience

  496. and to know

  497. the kingdom of God

  498. as he intended it

  499. in its fullness.

  500. Sin robs us

  501. in so many ways.

  502. Our ego

  503. and our self-protection,

  504. our lust

  505. for our own power

  506. and glory,

  507. our self-centeredness

  508. and our selfishness

  509. that exclude God,

  510. our desire

  511. to make God

  512. serve us

  513. and our agendas

  514. rather than serving him.

  515. This sin holds us

  516. like a death grip

  517. and our souls

  518. are dead

  519. because of it.

  520. This is what

  521. the Bible tells us.

  522. And like prisoners

  523. in the dry well,

  524. we can't make ourselves

  525. alive.

  526. But Jesus is your king

  527. to set us free.

  528. And we see in verse 11

  529. the means of it.

  530. Because of the blood

  531. of my covenant

  532. with you.

  533. This is how God does it.

  534. Now,

  535. we need to stop

  536. for a minute

  537. and think about covenants.

  538. Covenants are promises.

  539. They're typically agreements.

  540. They have different

  541. kinds of forms.

  542. Some covenants

  543. in the Bible

  544. seem to be conditional.

  545. Something like

  546. the Mosaic law.

  547. If you obey my law,

  548. then I will bring

  549. blessing.

  550. If you disobey my law,

  551. I will bring cursing.

  552. But we also see

  553. other kinds of covenants

  554. like the covenant

  555. that God made

  556. with Abraham

  557. in Genesis 15.

  558. I don't know

  559. if you guys

  560. know this story,

  561. but God comes

  562. and he says,

  563. Abraham,

  564. I'm going to make you

  565. the father

  566. of great nations.

  567. And I'm going to bless you

  568. and I'm going to bless

  569. the world through you.

  570. And then he does

  571. this ritual.

  572. Do you remember

  573. this ritual?

  574. It says,

  575. take three animals,

  576. cut them in half

  577. as a sacrifice.

  578. And then Abraham

  579. falls asleep

  580. and he has this vision

  581. of a pot

  582. that goes back and forth.

  583. Because in the old days,

  584. these covenants

  585. would be made

  586. where there would be

  587. agreement.

  588. You do this,

  589. I will do this,

  590. right?

  591. And in this case,

  592. God was commanding Abraham

  593. to be circumcised

  594. as a part of the covenant

  595. agreement.

  596. But it wasn't

  597. a conditional one

  598. because typically

  599. the two parties

  600. would cut animals

  601. and then they'd come together

  602. and walk through it together

  603. and they would say,

  604. may this and more

  605. be done to me

  606. if I break the conditions

  607. of this covenant.

  608. Right?

  609. But what happened

  610. in Genesis 15

  611. is Abraham didn't walk

  612. between the animals.

  613. Only God did.

  614. God said,

  615. I will make a covenant

  616. with you.

  617. I will do this

  618. and I will do everything

  619. that's necessary

  620. for you to fulfill

  621. this covenant

  622. so that it cannot

  623. be broken.

  624. And I believe

  625. this is part

  626. of what God,

  627. I'm not sure

  628. whether Zechariah

  629. is referring

  630. to the Abrahamic covenant

  631. or to the Mosaic covenant

  632. or to the Davidic covenant.

  633. I actually think

  634. he may be weaving a rope

  635. and saying,

  636. it's not one of those,

  637. it's all of those.

  638. I'm building towards

  639. a new covenant.

  640. I'm building towards

  641. a greater covenant

  642. that will fulfill

  643. all of these promises

  644. and I will do

  645. what is necessary.

  646. And this is what we see.

  647. Jesus,

  648. who walked into Jerusalem

  649. on Palm Sunday,

  650. four days later,

  651. sat with his disciples

  652. in the Passover meal

  653. and said,

  654. this covenant

  655. is a new covenant

  656. in my blood.

  657. Shed for you

  658. for the forgiveness

  659. of your sins.

  660. Do this

  661. in remembrance

  662. of me.

  663. Like a Passover lamb,

  664. Jesus goes

  665. and says,

  666. I will be the substitute.

  667. I will die

  668. for the firstborn.

  669. I will die

  670. for you

  671. because of your sin

  672. so that you

  673. don't have to.

  674. so that you

  675. can come

  676. and simply

  677. receive by faith

  678. the blessings

  679. of the promise

  680. and entrance

  681. into the kingdom

  682. that I've established

  683. through my sacrifice.

  684. So this is

  685. what Jesus does.

  686. He comes

  687. to establish

  688. his kingdom

  689. through his death

  690. and through

  691. his resurrection.

  692. through his blood

  693. sacrifice

  694. for us.

  695. And friends,

  696. we look around

  697. and we think,

  698. but that happened

  699. 2,000 years ago.

  700. Where is

  701. kingdom today?

  702. Well,

  703. the good news

  704. is

  705. that the new covenant

  706. that was established

  707. through Jesus

  708. will one day

  709. bring a new heavens

  710. and a new earth.

  711. We know this,

  712. that Jesus

  713. will come.

  714. We know

  715. that when he comes

  716. again,

  717. he will bring

  718. all of these things

  719. to fullness

  720. and fruition

  721. and we will

  722. experience

  723. the greatness

  724. and the excellence

  725. and the completion

  726. of his kingdom.

  727. For those of you

  728. who want to stick around

  729. for the rest

  730. of the spring

  731. as we preach

  732. through the rest

  733. of Revelation,

  734. we're almost there.

  735. We're in chapter 19.

  736. Chapter 19 and 20

  737. is all about

  738. the victory over evil

  739. and chapter 21,

  740. oh my gosh,

  741. it's such a beautiful vision.

  742. It's such a compelling

  743. hope

  744. that we know

  745. that Jesus the king

  746. has already

  747. fundamentally won

  748. and he will

  749. one day

  750. bring it to fruition.

  751. And this is

  752. our great hope,

  753. hope,

  754. that the lamb

  755. who is slain

  756. will be the one

  757. who will be worshipped

  758. as king.

  759. So Zechariah

  760. tells us

  761. that the kind

  762. of king

  763. that God

  764. is going to send

  765. will be a humble king

  766. and he will be

  767. a king

  768. who will give himself

  769. up in sacrifice

  770. to save his people

  771. and finally

  772. he will be a king

  773. who will come

  774. to help us

  775. flourish

  776. in his beauty.

  777. This is what we see

  778. in verses 14

  779. through 17.

  780. And we need to acknowledge

  781. that there is a picture

  782. here of

  783. the military victory,

  784. right?

  785. 14, 15, 16.

  786. It's remarkable,

  787. isn't it?

  788. This king comes

  789. and he has an arrow

  790. that's like lightning,

  791. right?

  792. And he will sound

  793. his trumpet.

  794. Remember the trumpets

  795. that sounded in Jericho

  796. and the walls fell down?

  797. Trumpets have this great,

  798. we actually talked about

  799. trumpets in Revelation.

  800. Trumpets are signs

  801. of military force

  802. coming to victory.

  803. He will blow his trumpet

  804. and he will march forth

  805. with the whirlwinds

  806. of the south.

  807. There's a,

  808. south of Israel,

  809. there are commonly

  810. these extremely strong

  811. windstorms.

  812. And Zechariah's pulling

  813. on that imagery

  814. to say,

  815. he's going to come

  816. like a hurricane.

  817. He's going to come

  818. and he's going to

  819. blow you away.

  820. And in the midst of it,

  821. he's going to protect

  822. his people,

  823. right?

  824. And his people

  825. will overcome,

  826. right?

  827. And they will devour

  828. and they will tread

  829. down the sling stones,

  830. which means that

  831. even though the trebuchets

  832. may be throwing

  833. big rocks at them,

  834. it won't hurt them.

  835. They will tremble

  836. over them like pebbles.

  837. And they will roar

  838. in victory.

  839. Verse 16,

  840. On that day,

  841. the Lord their God

  842. will save them

  843. and the flock

  844. of his people.

  845. For like jewels

  846. of a crown,

  847. they shall shine

  848. on his land.

  849. For how great

  850. is his goodness

  851. and how great

  852. is his beauty.

  853. Grain shall make

  854. the young men flourish

  855. and new wine,

  856. the young women.

  857. This vision

  858. of this king

  859. who comes

  860. ends in this picture

  861. of flourishing,

  862. of abundance,

  863. of richness,

  864. of joy.

  865. The kingdom

  866. that the king comes,

  867. and again,

  868. there are images here,

  869. right?

  870. The images

  871. of the grain

  872. and the wine

  873. are images

  874. of a healthy harvest,

  875. a kingdom

  876. that's flourishing,

  877. a land

  878. that is producing

  879. abundantly

  880. for those

  881. who are young

  882. so that they

  883. would have joy

  884. in the land

  885. that they live in.

  886. And what he's saying

  887. here is the goodness

  888. of God

  889. and the beauty

  890. of God

  891. will feed our souls

  892. better than wine

  893. and grain

  894. and we will flourish

  895. as we gaze

  896. upon the beauty

  897. of this king

  898. who came

  899. humbly,

  900. who came

  901. in sacrifice,

  902. sacrifice.

  903. This is where

  904. his beauty

  905. is most fully seen.

  906. I know,

  907. Isaiah says

  908. he had no beauty.

  909. He had no human beauty,

  910. but the beauty

  911. of his sacrifice,

  912. the beauty

  913. of his love,

  914. the riches

  915. of his grace,

  916. the depths

  917. of his mercy,

  918. this is

  919. the goodness

  920. and the beauty

  921. of the king

  922. who has come.

  923. And friends,

  924. we have the privilege

  925. now to taste

  926. of it

  927. because Jesus

  928. is risen

  929. from the dead

  930. and he is calling

  931. his people

  932. and even now

  933. we can take hold

  934. of the foretaste

  935. of the fullness

  936. of the kingdom.

  937. them.

  938. And this is why

  939. Zechariah begins

  940. with rejoice

  941. because friends,

  942. we are to have joy,

  943. joy on this Palm Sunday

  944. that our king

  945. has come,

  946. joy on this day

  947. that our king

  948. will come again

  949. and that the promises

  950. are secure

  951. and that his work

  952. is finished

  953. and that he is

  954. a savior

  955. who is unlike

  956. any other

  957. who has come

  958. to save

  959. not the way

  960. we think

  961. we would want

  962. to be saved

  963. but the way

  964. he in the riches

  965. of his mercy

  966. and grace

  967. and his unfathomable

  968. wisdom

  969. the way that

  970. he has come

  971. for us

  972. on that day

  973. when the Lord

  974. returns.

  975. Revelation 21

  976. says this,

  977. and he who is

  978. seated on the throne

  979. said behold

  980. I am making

  981. all things new

  982. also he said

  983. write this down

  984. for these words

  985. are trustworthy

  986. and true

  987. and he said

  988. to me

  989. it is done

  990. I am the alpha

  991. and the omega

  992. the beginning

  993. and the end

  994. to the thirsty

  995. I will give

  996. from the springs

  997. of water of life

  998. without payment

  999. the one who conquers

  1000. will have this heritage

  1001. and I will be

  1002. his God

  1003. and he will be

  1004. my son.

  1005. oh friends

  1006. this Palm Sunday

  1007. let us rejoice

1008. we have a great king

1009. a king above all kings

  1010. let us worship him

  1011. let's pray together

  1012. Lord we do confess

  1013. that there are times

  1014. when it's hard

  1015. for us

  1016. to rejoice

  1017. in the midst

  1018. of the trials

  1019. and the brokenness

  1020. of this world

  1021. Lord when we see

  1022. that the darkness

  1023. seems to prevail

  1024. when we think

  1025. that

  1026. the rulers

  1027. of this world

  1028. will continue forever

  1029. Lord when we struggle

  1030. in our own hearts

  1031. and souls

  1032. against our sin

  1033. and the darkness

  1034. that creeps in

  1035. Lord help us

  1036. to see you

1037. in all of your beauty

  1038. help us

  1039. to see you

  1040. who

  1041. didn't count

  1042. equality

  1043. with God

  1044. something to be grasped

  1045. but humbled himself

  1046. made himself

  1047. a servant

  1048. took on human flesh

  1049. and became obedient

  1050. even

  1051. even

  1052. unto the

  1053. death

  1054. on a cross

  1055. Lord help us

  1056. to see you

  1057. exalted

  1058. exalted

  1059. exalted

  1060. as the

  1061. one who died

  1062. and who lives

  1063. again

  1064. who now

  1065. is exalted

  1066. to the right hand

  1067. of the Father

  1068. the one who reigns

  1069. the one whom

  1070. one day

  1071. every knee will bow

  1072. heaven and earth

  1073. and confess

  1074. that you are Lord

  1075. Lord

  1076. restore

  1077. our hope

  1078. and renew

  1079. our joy

  1080. this day

  1081. we pray

  1082. in Jesus name

  1083. Amen
