  1. In 1817, Percy Shelley wrote this famous poem.

  2. I met a traveler from an ancient, from an antique land who said,

  3. Two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert, near them on the sand.

  4. Half sunk, a shattered, rigid lies, whose frown and wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command

  5. tell that its sculptor well read, well those passions read,

  6. which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things.

  7. The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed, and on the pedestal these words appear.

  8. My name is Ozymandias, King of kings, look on my works, ye mighty and despair.

  9. Nothing beside remains.

  10. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare, the lone and level sands stretch far away.

  11. Shelley was a poet during the height of the British Empire, and he was not a fan of the empire.

  12. And so he wrote this poem to talk about the ephemeral nature of the kingdoms of this world.

  13. I've had the privilege of being in Berlin at the Pergamon Museum.

  14. If you've ever been there, it's a great museum with lots of stolen treasures from the rest of the world.

  15. That's not a good thing, but it's just true.

  16. And one of the things that is there is something called the Gate of Ishtar, or the Ishtar Gate,

  17. which is a reconstruction of one of the gates of the city of Babylon.

  18. And it's about 30 feet high, a mosaic with symbolism of dragons and lions and the greatness.

  19. But friends, where is that great city of Babylon today?

  20. We wonder what happens to the kings of this world.

  21. The church has always thought, what is our relationship to these kingdoms?

  22. In the first century, as we turn to the book of Revelation,

  23. we remember that during that time, the great kingdom of the world was not Babylon,

  24. but it was Rome.

  25. And they battled to know, how do we respond or how do we relate to this?

  26. How do we resist the allure of becoming a partner in these kingdoms that will fall?

  27. So we've read at the beginning of the book of Revelation, remember the letters.

  28. This is way back in the fall.

  29. Some of you weren't even here yet.

  30. Way back in the fall, we looked at the letters to seven churches.

  31. And to the church of Thyatira, the Lord said this,

  32. but I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel,

  33. who calls herself a prophetess,

  34. and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality

  35. and to eat foods sacrificed to idols.

  36. There was false teaching connected to the Roman Empire

  37. that was inducing Christians away from worship of God to serving Rome.

  38. Similarly, to the church in Laodicea, chapter 3, Jesus says this,

  39. Because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

  40. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, I need nothing.

  41. Not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

  42. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich,

  43. and white garments so that you may clothe yourself,

  44. and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen,

  45. and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.

  46. In the first century, there was this pull to be a part of the Roman Empire

  47. because it would give you what seemed to be wealth, security, prosperity, and power.

  48. The pressure to be a part of this church, part of this world, if you remember,

  49. was a pull on the church.

  50. And one of the reasons why the book of Revelation was written

  51. was to remind us that we are to resist that pull.

  52. Maybe some of you feel that pull in the kingdoms of this world that we live in today.

  53. The pull of pride in the wealth of your accomplishments, connections, or belongings.

  54. Your investment in building a world here and now,

  55. thinking that you might become one of those who would be immortal by the things that you achieve.

  56. Your hope in this life is for more comfort, more pleasure, more success.

  57. Or your desire for acceptance and meaning becomes wrapped up

  58. in conforming to the world around you so that you will fit in and be recognized.

  59. Friends, as we turn to Revelation 18 today, God has words for us.

  60. Revelation 18 is on page 974 in your pew Bible.

  61. And God has something to say to us as we think about living in the worlds,

  62. the kingdoms that we live in today.

  63. So if you're there, Revelation chapter 18, we're going to read through the whole chapter,

    Revelation 18 chapter mention

  64. and then we're going to make a few observations about it before we go to the Lord's table.

  65. So let's read together God's word.

  66. After this, I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority,

  67. and the earth was made bright with his glory,

  68. and he called out with a mighty voice,

  69. Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great.

  70. She has become a dwelling place for demons,

  71. a haunt for every unclean spirit,

  72. a haunt for every unclean bird,

  73. a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.

  74. For all the nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality,

  75. and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her,

  76. and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.

  77. Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,

  78. Come out of her, my people,

  79. lest you take part in her sins,

  80. lest you share in her plagues.

  81. For her sins are heaped high as heaven,

  82. and God has remembered her iniquities.

  83. Pay her back as she herself has paid back others,

  84. and repay her double for her deeds.

  85. Mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed.

  86. As she glorified herself and lived in luxury,

  87. so give her a like measure of torment and mourning.

  88. Since in her heart she says,

  89. I sit as a queen,

  90. I am no widow,

  91. and mourning I shall never see.

  92. For this reason her plagues will come in a single day,

  93. death and mourning and famine,

  94. and she will be burned up with fire.

  95. For mighty is the Lord God

  96. who has judged her.

  97. And the kings of the earth

  98. who committed sexual immorality

  99. and lived in luxury with her

  100. will weep and wail over her

  101. when they see the smoke of her burning.

  102. They will stand far off in fear of her torment

  103. and say,

  104. Alas, alas, you great city,

  105. you mighty city Babylon,

  106. for in a single hour your judgment has come.

  107. And the merchants of the earth

  108. will weep and mourn for her

  109. since no one buys their cargo anymore,

  110. cargo of gold, silver, jewels,

  111. pearls, fine linen, purple cloth,

  112. silk, scarlet cloth,

  113. all kinds of scented wood,

  114. all kinds of articles of ivory,

  115. all kinds of articles of costly wood,

  116. bronze, iron, and marble,

  117. cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh,

  118. frankincense, wine, oil,

  119. fine flour, wheat, cattle,

  120. and sheep, horses, and chariots,

  121. and slaves, that is, human souls.

  122. The fruit for which your soul longed

  123. has gone from you,

  124. and all your delicacies

  125. and all your splendors

  126. are lost to you,

  127. never to be found again.

  128. The merchants of these wares

  129. who gained wealth from her

  130. will stand far off in fear of her torment,

  131. weeping and mourning aloud.

  132. Alas, alas, for the great city

  133. that was clothed in fine linen

  134. and purple and scarlet,

  135. adorned with gold,

  136. with jewels and with pearls.

  137. For in a single hour,

  138. all this wealth has been laid waste.

  139. And all shipmasters

  140. and seafaring men,

  141. sailors,

  142. and all those who trade on the sea

  143. stood far off

  144. and cried out

  145. as they saw the smoke of her burning,

  146. what city was like

  147. the great city.

  148. And they threw down,

  149. they threw dust on their heads

  150. as they wept and mourned,

  151. crying out,

  152. alas, alas,

  153. for the great city

  154. where all who had ships at sea

  155. grew rich by her wealth,

  156. for in a single hour

  157. she has been laid waste.

  158. Rejoice over her, O heaven,

  159. and you saints

  160. and apostles and prophets,

  161. for God has given judgment

  162. for you against her.

  163. And then a mighty angel

  164. took up a stone

  165. like a giant millstone

  166. and threw it into the sea,

  167. saying,

  168. So will Babylon,

  169. the great city,

  170. be,

  171. thrown down with violence

  172. and will be found no more.

  173. And the sound of the harpists

  174. and musicians

  175. of flute players

  176. and trumpeters

  177. will be heard in you

  178. no more.

  179. And a craftsman of any craft

  180. will be found in you

  181. no more.

  182. And the sound of the mill

  183. will be heard in you

  184. no more.

  185. And the light of a lamp

  186. will shine in you

  187. no more.

  188. And the voice of the bridegroom

  189. and bride will be heard in you

  190. no more.

  191. For your merchants

  192. were the great ones

  193. of the earth

  194. and all the nations

  195. were deceived

  196. by your sorcery.

  197. And in her was found

  198. the blood of the prophets

  199. and of saints

  200. and all who have been slain

  201. on the earth.

  202. Well, let's pray

  203. and ask for God's help.

  204. Lord, thank you

  205. for this word.

  206. Lord, we know

  207. that your word

  208. is living and active

  209. sharper than a two-edged sword.

  210. And I pray

  211. that as we consider

  212. this word to us

  213. this morning

  214. that you would

  215. help us.

  216. Lord, give us

  217. minds to understand

  218. and hearts to receive.

  219. Lord, help me

  220. to speak clearly

  221. as I ought.

  222. Lord, that we might

  223. sit together

  224. under your word

  225. this morning.

  226. We pray this

  227. in Jesus' name.

  228. Amen.

  229. Amen.

  230. Well, what are we

  231. to make of this?

  232. I believe

  233. that

  234. the point

  235. of this chapter

  236. is to give us

  237. one command

  238. and three reasons.

  239. So, if you're

  240. taking your outline,

  241. there it is,

  242. four points,

  243. one command

  244. and then three reasons

  245. for it.

  246. And the command

  247. is simply this,

  248. come out.

  249. Come out

  250. from among her.

  251. Come out

  252. from Babylon.

  253. Come out

  254. from the world

  255. systems.

  256. come out

  257. for three reasons.

  258. Because you will

  259. lament all you

  260. will lose

  261. if you don't.

  262. Second reason,

  263. because you will

  264. face God's

  265. right judgment

  266. if you don't.

  267. And thirdly,

  268. because you will

  269. be filled

  270. with great joy

  271. at God's

  272. greater kingdom.

  273. We'll repeat

  274. those as we go.

  275. So first,

  276. let's consider

  277. the command.

  278. Come out

  279. of her,

  280. my people.

  281. We've talked

  282. about her,

  283. Babylon,

  284. already.

  285. And if you

  286. haven't been here

  287. before,

  288. I'm going to

  289. encourage you

  290. to go back

  291. and listen

  292. to some

  293. of the earlier

  294. sermons,

  295. particularly

  296. Nick's sermon

  297. last week,

  298. or not last week,

  299. but about

  300. Revelation 17.

  301. That was three

  302. weeks ago

  303. because he spent

  304. a lot of time

  305. talking about

  306. the nature

  307. and contours

  308. of Babylon

  309. and we don't

  310. have that here.

  311. So I'm not

  312. going to spend

  313. a lot of time

  314. but just to say

  315. her big picture,

  316. you can see it

  317. in verse three,

  318. right,

  319. that the kings

  320. have drunk

  321. of her sexual

  322. immorality

  323. and her pleasures

  324. and her wealth

  325. and what we see

  326. is that Babylon

  327. is a symbol

  328. for the world

  329. systems,

  330. political,

  331. societal systems

  332. that entice

  333. or seduce us

  334. to put our hope

  335. and find our life

  336. in this world

  337. rather than

  338. in others.

  339. And remember,

  340. again,

  341. you can go back

  342. for the full

  343. explanation

  344. but in the

  345. Old Testament

  346. and here

  347. we see

  348. the images

  349. of sexual

  350. immorality

  351. is also

  352. a clue

  353. to say

  354. this is about

  355. idolatry,

  356. this is about

  357. worshipping

  358. other things

  359. more than

  360. we worship

  361. God

  362. and making

  363. other things

  364. ultimate

  365. in our affections.

  366. and the command

  367. is to come

  368. out of her

  369. because she

  370. has fallen.

  371. This is what's

  372. announced

  373. in verse 2

  374. and this is

  375. what is described

  376. in chapter 17.

  377. Fallen so

  378. completely

  379. in verse 2

  380. that it's become

  381. a desolation

  382. that the only

  383. living things

  384. that would remain

  385. would be wild

  386. animals

  387. and wild spirits.

  388. nothing good.

  389. So the command

  390. is to come

  391. out of that

  392. but what does

  393. it mean

  394. to come out?

  395. In the original

  396. context

  397. going back

  398. to Jeremiah

  399. 50 and 51

  400. you would see

  401. that the prophet

  402. was speaking

  403. to the people

  404. of God

  405. who were literally

  406. living in Babylon

  407. and they were

  408. predicting

  409. the fall

  410. of Babylon

  411. as the Persians

  412. would come in

  413. and overthrow

  414. their kingdom

  415. and he's literally

  416. saying you need

  417. to leave the city

  418. before it falls

  419. under destruction.

  420. But that is not

  421. what's happening

  422. here in Revelation.

  423. That historical event

  424. has now become

  425. a symbol

  426. of coming out

  427. from participation

  428. in a world

  429. to forsake a land,

  430. a culture,

  431. and its religion.

  432. Now listen,

  433. we need to be

  434. very careful in this

  435. because there have

  436. been times

  437. when the church

  438. has heard this call

  439. and thought we need

  440. to totally separate

  441. ourselves out.

  442. So monks

  443. would go live

  444. on pillars

  445. in the desert

  446. in the 4th century,

  447. right?

  448. Or in the early

  449. 20th century

  450. we would create

  451. the great

  452. holy huddle

  453. fundamentalist movement

  454. that would separate

  455. from everybody

  456. in every way.

  457. And so we would

  458. only eat at

  459. Christian restaurants,

  460. only read Christian books,

  461. only attend Christian schools,

  462. only listen to Christian music,

  463. only have Christian friends,

  464. and live in this

  465. completely separate bubble

  466. that was not

  467. in the world.

  468. But friends,

  469. listen to what Jesus

  470. prayed for his

  471. disciples

  472. and for the world

  473. in John 17.

  474. He said,

  475. I do not ask

  476. that you would

  477. take them out

  478. of the world,

  479. but that you would

  480. keep them

  481. from the evil one,

  482. for they are not

  483. of this world,

  484. just as I am not

  485. of this world.

  486. And again,

  487. go back to

  488. Pastor Nick's sermon

  489. three weeks ago,

  490. these kind of pair

  491. because he talked about

  492. we're called to be

  493. a city within a city.

  494. We're called to be

  495. a different community

  496. within the community

  497. of the world

  498. while we live here

  499. on earth.

  500. Nancy Guthrie

  501. had a really helpful

  502. way of phrasing this

  503. that I thought

  504. was really good.

  505. It's not separation

  506. that requires

  507. physical distance,

  508. but distinction,

  509. a difference

  510. in how we live,

  511. in what we love,

  512. and what we worship.

  513. It's not about

  514. where we do our life,

  515. but how we do our life

  516. that makes us

  517. those who come out.

  518. So again,

  519. the Apostle John

  520. writes this

  521. in his first letter,

  522. 1 John 2,

    1 John 2:15

  523. verse 15 and following.

  524. He says,

  525. Do not love the world

  526. or the things

  527. in the world.

  528. If anyone loves the world,

  529. the love of the Father

  530. is not in him.

  531. For all that is in the world,

  532. the desires of the flesh

  533. and the desires of the eyes

  534. and the pride of life

  535. is not from the Father,

  536. but is from the world.

  537. And the world

  538. is passing away

  539. along with its desires.

  540. But whoever does

  541. the will of God

  542. abides forever.

  543. So coming out

  544. is a matter of

  545. what we worship

  546. and what we love.

  547. what do we value

  548. above all things?

  549. What authority

  550. do we seek

  551. to ultimately please?

  552. What do we set

  553. our hearts on

  554. in devotion?

  555. What do we invest

  556. our time,

  557. our money,

  558. our relationships in?

  559. And what is

  560. the meaning

  561. of our success?

  562. I'm sorry,

  563. the measure

  564. of our success

  565. or the source

  566. of our meaning.

  567. Do we get these things

  568. from the world around us?

  569. We get this

  570. from God

  571. in heaven.

  572. This is the word.

  573. Come out.

  574. Come out

  575. from this world

  576. and your dependence upon

  577. and your investment

  578. in this world.

  579. Be distinctive

  580. so that the aroma

  581. of the kingdom

  582. of Jesus

  583. would capture

  584. our hearts

  585. more

  586. than those

  587. of this world.

  588. Why does he say this?

  589. Well, he gives

  590. three reasons.

  591. We'll look at these

  592. briefly, hopefully.

  593. See how we do.

  594. First,

  595. come out

  596. because you will lament

  597. of all you lose

  598. if you don't.

  599. Starting in verse 9

  600. and going through

  601. verse 19,

  602. there is a picture

  603. of three peoples.

  604. They're kings,

  605. merchants,

  606. and seamen.

  607. And each of them

  608. were full participants

  609. in the world

  610. of Babylon.

  611. Right?

  612. In this picture

  613. of this,

  614. they're investing

  615. in the world.

  616. The kings

  617. invested in the power

  618. and the wealth.

  619. The merchants

  620. with the luxury

  621. and comfort

  622. of their wealth.

  623. The seamen

  624. and the accumulation

  625. of wealth.

  626. And what happened

  627. was they see

  628. Babylon fall.

  629. The things

  630. that they had

  631. set their hearts

  632. on and invested

  633. their lives in

  634. were gone.

  635. And you see

  636. a pattern.

  637. Each of them

  638. stand far off,

  639. somehow trying

  640. to distance themselves

  641. at the last minute

  642. from this

  643. cataclysmic destruction.

  644. They stood far off.

  645. They wept

  646. and mourned aloud

  647. for the ending

  648. of the things

  649. they had invested

  650. so much in.

  651. And they trembled

  652. in fear

  653. that they too

  654. might burn

  655. along with it.

  656. I don't know

  657. if you heard it

  658. but as we read through

  659. did you notice

  660. it happens

  661. in an hour?

  662. In a day?

  663. Like that?

  664. You think

  665. of the parable

  666. that Jesus told

  667. in Luke 12

  668. about the man

  669. who had great barns

  670. and they were getting

  671. so,

  672. he was so wealthy

  673. that he didn't have

  674. enough barns

  675. so we had to tear

  676. him down

  677. and build more ones

  678. and Jesus comes

  679. to him that night

  680. and says,

  681. you fool.

  682. Tonight,

  683. your soul

  684. is demanded of you.

  685. He had invested

  686. his soul

  687. in the pleasure

  688. and wealth

  689. of this world

  690. and yet,

  691. as we all know,

  692. we don't take it

  693. with us.

  694. And so,

  695. this is why

  696. we're called

  697. to be distinct

  698. from this world

  699. because God

  700. wants to spare us

  701. from the lament

  702. and from the loss

  703. but even more

  704. than that,

  705. well,

  706. from the lament

  707. and the loss

  708. that we will experience

  709. when we invest

  710. in things

  711. that won't last.

  712. When we build

  713. our house

  714. on a foundation

  715. of sand

  716. that gets washed away

  717. in the stresses

  718. of life,

  719. there will only be

  720. woe

  721. and mourning

  722. and lamenting

  723. if we've invested

  724. in these things.

  725. So,

  726. that's the first reason

  727. because God wants

  728. to spare us

  729. from this loss,

  730. from being in this

  731. but there's more

  732. behind it

  733. than there isn't there

  734. because what we see

  735. is that

  736. in the midst

  737. of this lamenting

  738. and loss,

  739. there is also

  740. again the picture

  741. of God's judgment,

  742. God's right judgment.

  743. There's a commentator

  744. that said,

  745. to share in her wickedness

  746. is to reap

  747. her recompense.

  748. if we invest

  749. ourselves

  750. in the lives

  751. of this world

  752. then the judgment

  753. that God has

  754. proclaimed and pronounced

  755. against the world

  756. that stands up

  757. against him,

  758. we will be

  759. those who will

  760. suffer that as well.

  761. And it's a terrible

  762. judgment.

  763. You see this

  764. in verses 5

  765. through 8

  766. as it describes

  767. this,

  768. says that their sins

  769. are heaped

  770. as high as heaven,

  771. even as tall

  772. as the Tower of Babel

  773. way back in Genesis 11,

  774. reaching up to heaven.

  775. Verse 7,

  776. did you hear the pride

  777. where she says,

  778. I'm a queen,

  779. I'm not going to suffer

  780. any consequences,

  781. I am going to live

  782. in this place

  783. of power and privilege

  784. forever,

  785. I will have no mourning,

  786. I won't lose my husband

  787. and be a widow

  788. and be in vulnerable

  789. positions,

  790. I have all of these

  791. things and I will

  792. never give them up.

  793. And then if you heard

  794. at the very end,

  795. verse 24,

  796. recognize that

  797. this world system

  798. that we so easily

  799. invest in

  800. is always at war

  801. against the church.

  802. Not always literally,

  803. not always physically,

  804. but certainly

  805. throughout the ages

  806. and as we've seen,

  807. more likely

  808. as we continue

  809. that those

  810. who live

  811. for the kingdom

  812. of God

  813. will die

  814. at the hands

  815. of this world

  816. because they're

  817. following Jesus.

  818. And so our,

  819. and these people,

  820. those who have died,

  821. cry out,

  822. remember Revelation 6,

  823. 10?

  824. Oh sovereign Lord,

  825. holy and true,

  826. how long before you

  827. will judge and avenge

  828. our blood

  829. on those who dwell

  830. on the earth?

  831. Babylon has earned

  832. God's wrath.

  833. It is a right judgment

  834. against them

  835. and it will come upon them

  836. like the plagues

  837. of Egypt

  838. came upon Pharaoh.

  839. You see the language

  840. of plagues

  841. being used here.

  842. Plagues of mourning

  843. and death

  844. and famine

  845. in verse 8.

  846. Just like Pharaoh

  847. who said,

  848. I will not bow

  849. my knee to this king.

  850. I will seek

  851. to maintain

  852. my kingdom.

  853. God will say no

  854. and he will bring

  855. judgment

  856. in order to show

  857. that these world's kingdoms

  858. will not last

  859. and will not stand

  860. forever.

  861. And then as we look

  862. at the end

  863. of this passage,

  864. we see how complete

  865. the destruction is.

  866. This kingdom

  867. that's characterized

  868. by wealth

  869. and pleasure

  870. and power

  871. such that people

  872. are drunk with it,

  873. what does it look like?

  874. Starting in verse 21, 22,

  875. there will be no music.

  876. There will be no work.

  877. There will be no food.

  878. There will be no light.

  879. There will be no love

  880. and no celebrations

  881. of marriage.

  882. There will be desolation.

  883. When we invest

  884. in Babylon,

  885. we will get

  886. the dividends

  887. that Babylon

  888. will earn.

  889. We tend to think

  890. that God doesn't care

  891. what we do

  892. with our everyday lives,

  893. how we spend

  894. our time,

  895. our money,

  896. our sex,

  897. our power,

  898. our possessions,

  899. our social capital,

  900. but all of our investments

  901. will bring some return

  902. somewhere.

  903. God will be sure

  904. to make it so.

  905. Let us invest well,

  906. my friends.

  907. Let us set a heart

  908. on not this kingdom

  909. that will ultimately

  910. end and fall.

  911. Did you see

  912. the threat of hope?

  913. Did you hear it?

  914. Because there is

  915. another kingdom.

  916. There is a greater kingdom

  917. and a greater one,

  918. a greater king

  919. to love and worship.

  920. And this is the third reason

  921. to come out of Babylon.

  922. It's in verse 20.

  923. You will be filled

  924. with joy

  925. in God's greater kingdom.

  926. Now the ESV

  927. is really unhelpful here

  928. because it looks

  929. very much like

  930. verse 20

  931. is a part of the speech

  932. of the seamen

  933. and the merchants.

  934. But many commentators

  935. think this is not,

  936. this does not make sense.

  937. This is not consistent.

  938. Instead,

  939. they separate this out

  940. and say,

  941. this is a thread

  942. where the voice

  943. says something

  944. not to,

  945. not in the mouths

  946. of the seamen,

  947. but the voice

  948. from heaven

  949. is now speaking

  950. to the heavenly realms,

  951. to the angels

  952. and the saints

  953. and saying,

  954. rejoice.

  955. Verse 20,

  956. rejoice over her,

  957. O heaven,

  958. and you saints

  959. and apostles

  960. and prophets,

  961. for God has given

  962. judgment for you

  963. against her.

  964. Come out

  965. because you will be

  966. filled with a joy

  967. that comes from being

  968. a part of God's kingdom,

  969. a song of praise.

  970. When we look ahead

  971. in the first five verses

  972. of chapter 19,

  973. we'll start to see

  974. what will happen

  975. as Babylon falls.

  976. I don't want to steal

  977. Nick's thunder,

  978. but it's a beautiful picture

  979. where God's going to invite us

  980. to a great wedding feast

  981. and it's going to be,

  982. we will be the bride of Christ

  983. and he will invite us

  984. into this victorious,

  985. triumphant,

  986. eternal glory

  987. of being his people.

  988. We've seen the first five verses.

  989. I'm going to summarize this,

  990. but just compile

  991. the songs of praise

  992. that will be sung

  993. at that moment.

  994. Hallelujah,

  995. salvation and glory

  996. and power belong

  997. to our God

  998. for his judgments

  999. are just and true

  1000. for he has judged

  1001. the great prostitute

  1002. who corrupted the earth

  1003. with her immorality

1004. and has avenged on her

1005. the blood of his servants.

  1006. Hallelujah,

  1007. the smoke goes up

  1008. from her,

1009. goes up forever and ever.

  1010. Praise our God,

  1011. all you his servants,

  1012. you who fear him,

  1013. small and great.

  1014. friends,

1015. this is the great triumph

  1016. and the great kingdom

  1017. that God promises

  1018. and as we continue

1019. in the series in Revelation,

1020. we will see what God will do

1021. for as he brings low the Babylon,

1022. the kingdoms of this world,

1023. as he judges the serpent

  1024. and the dragon

  1025. and the devil

  1026. and the beast

  1027. and the prostitute,

1028. as you see all of them

  1029. finally experience

  1030. the fullness of recompense

1031. for all of the evil

  1032. that they have done.

1033. You will also see God

  1034. recreating the heavens

  1035. and the earth.

1036. He will make all things new

  1037. and there's a kingdom

1038. that is worth living for

1039. and a kingdom worth dying for.

  1040. For friends,

  1041. here's the thing,

  1042. we worship a savior

  1043. and on Good Friday,

  1044. just a week ago,

  1045. we celebrated something

  1046. unbelievable

1047. because he fell for us.

  1048. He,

1049. as he went to the cross,

  1050. experienced

  1051. and took upon himself

1052. the sin of the world

1053. so that all who believe in him

1054. would know that he has fallen for us

1055. and yet on Easter Sunday,

  1056. we worshiped him

1057. because he did not stay dead

  1058. because his desolation

  1059. was not forever

1060. but was for a moment

1061. and then God raised him

  1062. from the dead

1063. so that he might be

  1064. the eternal one,

1065. the lamb of God slain,

1066. the lion of Judah risen,

1067. the one who sits on the throne

1068. who is worthy to open the scrolls

  1069. and bring judgment

1070. against the evil of this world,

1071. the one who comes and says,

1072. behold, I am making all things new.

  1073. Oh, friends,

  1074. let us not continue

  1075. to invest our lives

  1076. in this world

  1077. but let us see

1078. that both out of avoiding

  1079. lament and judgment

  1080. and because there is

1081. a greater kingdom for us,

  1082. let us come out

  1083. and be distinct

1084. so that we might love him rightly.

1085. if you are here this morning

1086. and you haven't put your faith

  1087. in Christ,

  1088. know that you live

1089. in the kingdom of this world.

1090. There are only two kingdoms.

1091. There is no in-between space.

  1092. And Christ says,

  1093. come out.

1094. Put your faith in me.

  1095. Enter my kingdom.

1096. Become one of my children.

1097. And for those of us

  1098. who have been Christians

  1099. and followers for Jesus,

  1100. we know how easily

  1101. we fall into

  1102. that

  1103. proverbial pot

  1104. on the stove

  1105. and like frogs

  1106. we will

  1107. become like the place

  1108. around us

  1109. and be burned up.

  1110. Friends,

  1111. let us

  1112. consider

  1113. and examine ourselves

  1114. to see whether

  1115. we have entered

  1116. into partnership

  1117. with this world.

  1118. And may God

  1119. give us the grace

  1120. to bring clarity

  1121. to our devotion

  1122. and to our worship

  1123. and to our loves

  1124. because of what

1125. he has done for us.

  1126. Let's pray together.

  1127. Oh Lord,

1128. we came to you now.

  1129. Lord,

1130. this is not an easy word

  1131. to read

  1132. and it is

  1133. sobering for us.

  1134. Lord,

  1135. for we do live

  1136. in this world

  1137. and we confess

  1138. how often

  1139. and how easily

  1140. our hearts,

  1141. our attention,

  1142. our affections

  1143. are turned away

  1144. Lord,

  1145. from you.

  1146. Lord,

  1147. to love the things

  1148. of this world more.

  1149. But Lord,

  1150. we pray,

  1151. we pray this morning

  1152. that by your spirit

  1153. we would be renewed

  1154. Lord,

1155. so that we might see

1156. the glory of your kingdom.

  1157. We'd be renewed

  1158. in our commitment

  1159. to and desire

  1160. for

  1161. living for you

  1162. in this kingdom.

  1163. Oh Lord,

  1164. we

  1165. ask for you

  1166. to help us

  1167. Lord,

  1168. as we go

  1169. to the Lord's Supper,

  1170. that you would

  1171. shine your spotlight

  1172. on our hearts,

  1173. reveal

  1174. where there may be

  1175. wickedness

  1176. and unbelief,

  1177. compromise

  1178. in our hearts.

  1179. We pray this

  1180. in Jesus' name.

  1181. Amen.

  1182. Amen.

  1183. Amen.

  1184. Amen.

  1185. Amen.

  1186. Amen.

  1187. Amen.

  1188. Amen.

  1189. Amen.

  1190. Amen.

  1191. Amen.

  1192. Amen.

  1193. Amen.

  1194. Amen.

  1195. Amen.

  1196. Amen.

  1197. Amen.

  1198. Amen.

  1199. Amen.

  1200. Amen.
