  1. Good morning, church.

  2. Happy Mother's Day.

  3. It's good to be with you all today.

  4. So you probably noticed from the tank being out

  5. that we're celebrating a baptism today.

  6. In fact, this Sunday and next Sunday,

  7. over the course of these two Sundays,

  8. we'll be celebrating five new baptisms.

  9. So we're thrilled to see all that God is doing in our midst

  10. as these folks make a public profession of faith in Christ,

  11. which is what baptism is all about.

  12. It's a way of saying publicly

  13. that we've put our trust in the Lord Jesus

  14. as our Redeemer and our King.

  15. So if you're new or you're visiting,

  16. we're glad you're here to celebrate with us.

  17. Now, every Sunday, what we do

  18. is we take a passage from the Bible

  19. and we explain it and apply it to our lives.

  20. And in order to make sure

  21. that we're teaching what the Scripture says

  22. and not just picking and choosing

  23. what we think we should say,

  24. we usually take a whole book of the Bible

  25. and then just walk through it section by section.

  26. We don't skip anything.

  27. We just let God show us what He says to us in His Word.

  28. Now, this spring,

  29. we've been walking through the last book of the Bible

  30. called Revelation.

  31. And we're nearing the end of that book.

  32. Today, we're looking at the last few verses

  33. of Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  34. And it's pretty fitting

  35. that we're coming to the end of this book

  36. as we celebrate baptisms

  37. because baptism is a sign, as we said,

  38. that someone's come to believe and trust

  39. in Jesus as their Redeemer and King.

  40. In other words,

  41. baptism is expressing faith

  42. that Jesus is the one who saves us.

  43. And the end of Revelation shows us

  44. both what we're ultimately saved from

  45. and what we're ultimately saved for

  46. because of Jesus.

  47. The end of Revelation chapter 20

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  48. that we'll look at this morning

  49. and the beginning of Revelation 21

  50. that we'll look at in two weeks

  51. are this perfect pair.

  52. Revelation 20 shows us what we're saved from.

  53. Revelation 21 shows us what we're saved for.

  54. And if we peek ahead,

  55. we see that what Christ saves us for

  56. is beautiful.

  57. A renewed creation without suffering

  58. or death or sickness or sorrow

  59. with God in our midst,

  60. the fountain of unending joy.

  61. Just think of all the things

  62. that you love in this life.

  63. A great meal,

  64. a great soccer game,

  65. a great friendship.

  66. Do you realize that the joys we experience

  67. in these created gifts

  68. ultimately come from God?

  69. God is our creator.

  70. He's the giver of all good gifts.

  71. And what Jesus saves us for

  72. is a future where sin and decay

  73. are finally overcome

  74. and we experience these good gifts

  75. in full measure.

  76. like a city alive

  77. when your team has won the World Series.

  78. Go Phillies, right?

  79. Do you know they have the best record

  80. in baseball right now?

  81. It's unbelievable.

  82. Or it's like a feast

  83. where the wine doesn't run out.

  84. That's what we're saved for.

  85. But Revelation also shows us

  86. what we're saved from.

  87. What we're saved from.

  88. I was listening to a podcast a while ago

  89. that was a conversation

  90. between Barack Obama

  91. and Bruce Springsteen.

  92. It was really excellent.

  93. If you don't like Bruce Springsteen,

  94. you can come talk to me afterwards

  95. and I'll convince you otherwise.

  96. But at one point in the conversation,

  97. they were reflecting

  98. on what kind of drove them

  99. in their professional life.

  100. Why were they sort of so driven

  101. to do what they did?

  102. Now, here are two men

  103. who've reached the pinnacle of success, right?

  104. The former president of the United States,

  105. a rock and roll legend.

  106. And as they were talking about

  107. what drove them,

  108. Barack Obama said something very insightful.

  109. He said basically,

  110. he said,

  111. you know, Bruce,

  112. ultimately in our work,

  113. in our labor,

  114. aren't we really looking for salvation?

  115. Aren't we hoping

  116. that through what we do,

  117. we'll find redemption?

  118. I think he's right.

  119. I think we're all looking for salvation.

  120. The question is,

  121. are we looking in the right direction?

  122. Revelation 20 shows us.

  123. It shows us ultimately

  124. what we need to be saved from.

  125. So let me encourage you

  126. to turn to Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  127. It's page 977

  128. in the Pew Bible.

  129. If you're new to the Bible,

  130. the big numbers are the chapters

  131. and the small numbers are the verses.

  132. Revelation 20,

  133. we're going to look at verses 11 through 15.

  134. That's page 977.

  135. The author of Revelation is the Apostle John,

  136. and God gives him a vision of the end of history

  137. in this passage,

  138. and John writes this.

  139. He says,

  140. Then I saw a great white throne

  141. and him who was seated on it.

  142. From his presence,

  143. earth and sky fled away,

  144. and no place was found for them.

  145. And I saw the dead,

  146. great and small,

  147. standing before the throne,

  148. and books were opened.

  149. Then another book was opened,

  150. which is the book of life.

  151. And the dead were judged

  152. by what was written in the books

  153. according to what they had done.

  154. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it.

  155. Death and Hades gave up the dead

  156. who were in them,

  157. and they were judged,

  158. each one of them,

  159. according to what they had done.

  160. Then death and Hades were thrown

  161. into the lake of fire.

  162. This is the second death,

  163. the lake of fire.

  164. And if anyone's name was not found

  165. written in the book of life,

  166. he was thrown into the lake of fire.

  167. Let's pray together.

  168. Father, help us to understand

  169. this weighty passage.

  170. Give us grace.

  171. Give us new light

  172. as we grapple with these eternal realities.

  173. And turn our hearts to your Son this morning,

  174. our Lord Jesus,

  175. through the power of your Holy Spirit.

  176. Amen.

  177. Now, there are three things

  178. that this passage shows us,

  179. and we'll just walk through each of them this morning.

  180. The first thing it shows us

  181. is the reality of divine judgment.

  182. The second thing that it shows us

  183. is the outcome of divine judgment.

  184. And then third,

  185. it shows us our hope

  186. in the face of divine judgment.

  187. So the reality and the outcome

  188. and our hope.

  189. So first,

  190. let's consider the reality

  191. of divine judgment

  192. that we see here.

  193. Verse 11

  194. is a picture of God

  195. in His holiness.

  196. By picturing God on a throne,

  197. John is saying that God

  198. is the world's true king and judge.

  199. And here,

  200. God steps into human history at last.

  201. And what happens?

  202. His presence is so awesome

  203. that earth and sky flee away.

  204. Do you know what happens

  205. when someone important

  206. walks into a room?

  207. What happens?

  208. Well, oftentimes what happens

  209. is people get quiet

  210. and they turn their heads and look.

  211. And then,

  212. if they want to get somewhere,

  213. the crowd just sort of parts

  214. to let them through, right?

  215. But here,

  216. when the Creator

  217. finally steps into creation,

  218. earth and sky turn their heads.

  219. And they don't just part,

  220. they flee

  221. before the one

  222. who is supremely worthy

  223. and awesome.

  224. This is the God who made us

  225. and everything else.

  226. And what verses 12 through 13 show us

  227. is that everyone

  228. will give an account

  229. to their Creator.

  230. John says,

  231. the books will be opened

  232. and you will be judged

  233. according to what you have done.

  234. There will be universal,

  235. final,

  236. divine judgment

  237. of every human being.

  238. You and me

  239. and everyone

  240. will stand before God.

  241. Now, maybe you have

  242. a hard time believing

  243. that the books of your life

  244. will be opened

  245. before God

  246. as your judge.

  247. But let me suggest

  248. that there are actually

  249. two reasons

  250. why you should believe

  251. or at least should want

  252. to believe

  253. in the reality

  254. of God's judgment.

  255. First reason is

  256. that the reality

  257. of God's judgment

  258. means

  259. that your life

  260. actually has meaning.

  261. Notice,

  262. John says,

  263. even the dead

  264. are raised to life

  265. and are brought before God.

  266. Well, why does that happen?

  267. Well, because what they've done

  268. matters to God.

  269. It matters for eternity.

  270. You see, friends,

  271. your life will continue

  272. for eternity

  273. because God wills it so,

  274. because it matters to Him.

  275. But if there's no

  276. final judgment,

  277. if death just means

  278. at best

  279. our memory lives on

  280. for a generation or two,

  281. then we're forgotten

  282. until eventually

  283. the sun expands

  284. in a few million years

  285. and everything turns to ash.

  286. If there's no final judgment,

  287. then the day-to-day decisions

  288. you make,

  289. they don't really matter

  290. in the end.

  291. It's all empty.

  292. It's all without

  293. ultimate meaning.

  294. But if there is a God

  295. who sees,

  296. who cares,

  297. who judges,

  298. then your actions

  299. do matter.

  300. What you do in this life

  301. is not meaningless.

  302. So the reality of God's judgment

  303. means that our lives

  304. actually have meaning.

  305. Our lives count

  306. because God takes them

  307. into account.

  308. So that's one reason

  309. we need to believe

  310. in God's judgment.

  311. But the second reason

  312. is that the reality

  313. of God's judgment

  314. is the only way

  315. that you can really

  316. live in freedom

  317. in this life

  318. from human judgment.

  319. If you believe

  320. that God is the ultimate judge,

  321. then you can actually

  322. break free

  323. from being controlled

  324. by what other humans

  325. think or say about you

  326. from their judgment.

  327. Listen to how Paul the Apostle

  328. puts this in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 4:3–4

  329. chapter 4

  330. verses 3 through 4.

  331. Paul writes,

  332. he says,

  333. But with me

  334. it's a very small thing

  335. that I should be judged

  336. by you

  337. or by any human court.

  338. In fact,

  339. I do not even judge myself.

  340. For I'm not aware

  341. of anything against myself,

  342. but I'm not thereby acquitted.

  343. It is the Lord

  344. who judges me.

  345. So what will give you

  346. freedom

  347. from the opinions

  348. and judgments

  349. of others?

  350. What will free you

  351. from being elated

  352. when people think

  353. well of you

  354. or dejected

  355. when people don't?

  356. I think there are only

  357. two kind of ways

  358. at the end of the day.

  359. One way is to say,

  360. well,

  361. I'm better than

  362. those stupid people

  363. so I don't care

  364. what they think, right?

  365. You know,

  366. but is that really

  367. the sort of person

  368. you want to become, right?

  369. Is that the price

  370. you want to pay

  371. for your freedom

  372. to become proud

  373. and self-righteous

  374. and despising

  375. other people, right?

  376. You sort of

  377. kind of end up

  378. becoming a monster

  379. that way.

  380. No,

  381. the only real way

  382. to be free

  383. from human judgment

  384. without ending up

  385. like that

  386. is to realize

  387. that there's

  388. a higher court.

  389. Ultimately,

  390. you need to be able

  391. to say with Paul,

  392. it's ultimately

  393. the Lord

  394. who judges me.

  395. That's what really

  396. frees you

  397. from being enslaved

  398. to the judgment

  399. of other people.

  400. Only the reality

  401. of divine judgment

  402. will do that.

  403. So it turns out

  404. we need to believe

  405. in this fact

  406. of universal

  407. final judgment.

  408. And this means

  409. your life

  410. and mine

  411. will be opened up

  412. before God's judgment

  413. seat on the last day.

  414. We will stand

  415. before our Creator

  416. and the books

  417. will be opened.

  418. And every thought

  419. and every word

  420. and every deed

  421. will matter

  422. and will come out

  423. into the open

  424. before the gaze

  425. of God.

  426. So that's the reality

  427. of judgment.

  428. But what will the outcome

  429. of that judgment be?

  430. Well, that takes us

  431. to our second point,

  432. the outcome

  433. of divine judgment.

  434. And this point

  435. brings us face to face

  436. with what is perhaps

  437. the most sobering truth

  438. that all of us

  439. must come to terms with.

  440. Because the question is,

  441. what do we deserve

  442. apart from Christ?

  443. I think our knee-jerk reaction

  444. is to say,

  445. well, I'm a good person,

  446. right?

  447. So I deserve something good.

  448. But when we say,

  449. I'm a good person,

  450. what standard

  451. are we using?

  452. Are we actually

  453. measuring ourselves

  454. against God's word for us,

  455. against God's standard for us?

  456. Or are we really

  457. just measuring ourselves

  458. against other people?

  459. If we're not measuring

  460. ourselves

  461. according to God's standard,

  462. word,

  463. then when we say

  464. or think,

  465. I'm a good person,

  466. all that you can

  467. really mean is,

  468. I'm a better person

  469. than some other people

  470. I know of.

  471. It's like when I say,

  472. I'm a good chess player.

  473. What I really mean is,

  474. I'm a better chess player

  475. than a lot of other people

  476. I've played chess against

  477. who are mostly my children.

  478. Right?

  479. Right?

  480. But is that good enough?

  481. Is that good enough?

  482. You know,

  483. you can kind of imagine

  484. two swimmers

  485. on the shore of California

  486. with a dream

  487. of reaching Hawaii,

  488. of getting to Hawaii,

  489. of visiting Hawaii one day.

  490. Right?

  491. You know,

  492. one is sort of

  493. an average swimmer.

  494. The other is

  495. an Olympic level athlete.

  496. And if they both

  497. hit the water

  498. and start swimming,

  499. right,

  500. I mean,

  501. how many miles

  502. does the average swimmer go?

  503. Right?

  504. Like a mile?

  505. Two miles maybe?

  506. Three?

  507. Four?

  508. Four?

  509. But then they sink.

  510. But the Olympic swimmer

  511. hits the water

  512. and they go maybe

  513. five or ten times

  514. that distance,

  515. right?

  516. Like clearly

  517. the Olympic swimmer

  518. is good.

  519. In fact,

  520. they're great.

  521. But what's the goal?

  522. Which one of the swimmers

  523. made it to Hawaii?

  524. Neither of them.

  525. Neither was even close.

  526. In fact,

  527. from that perspective,

  528. right,

  529. those two swimmers

  530. weren't actually

  531. all that different.

  532. One went five miles,

  533. the other went 50,

  534. but there's still

  535. like 2,400 miles

  536. left for both of them.

  537. So which one was better

  538. on that perspective?

  539. You see,

  540. when the books

  541. of your life

  542. are opened

  543. before God,

  544. it might be better

  545. than your neighbor,

  546. but that final day

  547. will not be a day

  548. of comparison.

  549. You won't be judged

  550. on the basis

  551. of what someone else

  552. did or didn't do,

  553. but according to

  554. what you have done.

  555. Verse 13 says,

  556. they were judged,

  557. each one of them,

  558. according to what

  559. they had done.

  560. And when you start

  561. turning the pages

  562. of your life

  563. before God,

  564. how will you fare?

  565. Did you love God

  566. with all your heart,

  567. soul,

  568. mind,

  569. and strength?

  570. Did you love your neighbor

  571. as yourself?

  572. But that's an impossibly

  573. high standard,

  574. you say.

  575. Who could meet that?

  576. But it is a just standard,

  577. isn't it?

  578. Isn't that a just standard?

  579. I mean,

  580. if God is God,

  581. He deserves

  582. our total affection.

  583. If our neighbors

  584. are created

  585. in God's image,

  586. they deserve our love

  587. as much as we love

  588. ourselves.

  589. But just for the sake

  590. of example,

  591. well,

  592. let's lower the bar,

  593. right?

  594. Did you do that

  595. 75% of the time?

  596. Probably not.

  597. Did you live that way

  598. 50% of the time?

  599. Meh.

  600. 10%.

  601. 1%?

  602. And for whose sake

  603. did you do those things

  604. even at the lowest level?

  605. Was it for God's glory?

  606. Or was it also

  607. for your own?

  608. Did you gladly submit

  609. to God's rule

  610. in your life,

  611. treating your very existence

  612. as a gift from Him,

  613. which it is,

  614. to be joyfully lived

  615. according to His will,

  616. which it should,

  617. or did you run

  618. your life

  619. your own way

  620. and treat God

  621. as a nice idea

  622. but not really

  623. the center

  624. of your life?

  625. Turn the pages

  626. of your life.

  627. Open the books.

  628. Can you really say

  629. that you've given God

  630. what He deserves

  631. with your life?

  632. Have you returned

  633. to God

  634. even a fraction

  635. of what He deserves

  636. as your creator

  637. and sustainer?

  638. Have you treated Him

  639. with even the modicum

  640. of respect

  641. and honor

  642. and love He deserves

  643. as the infinitely worthy

  644. and holy

  645. and beautiful one?

  646. No.

  647. No one has.

  648. Not you.

  649. Not me.

  650. Instead,

  651. we dream

  652. of big careers

  653. and easy retirements

  654. and making a mark

  655. and yes,

  656. at times we dream

  657. of doing good

  658. and leaving the world

  659. a better place

  660. but God?

  661. He's not really part

  662. of the equation,

  663. is He?

  664. He's like a footnote

  665. on a couple of pages

  666. of the books

  667. of our life.

  668. In fact,

  669. most of the time,

  670. God just gets in the way.

  671. So we ignore Him

  672. and we push Him

  673. to the margin.

  674. We give Him lip service

  675. and we get on

  676. with our lives.

  677. And so what do

  678. our lives deserve?

  679. What do we deserve

  680. before the only

  681. judgment seat

  682. that really matters?

  683. The truth is,

  684. we,

  685. all of us,

  686. live our lives

  687. wanting to be independent,

  688. wanting to run

  689. our lives without God

  690. and so,

  691. at the final judgment,

  692. God will render

  693. a completely fair

  694. and just verdict.

  695. He will look at our lives

  696. and say,

  697. you've chosen to live

  698. your life without me,

  699. on your own,

  700. as your own king,

  701. as your own queen,

  702. so this is my verdict.

  703. Thy will be done.

  704. And God will give us

  705. what our lives

  706. have in essence

  707. truly asked for

  708. every waking moment,

  709. separation from Him

  710. forever.

  711. We wanted a life

  712. without God

  713. and God in His justice

  714. will give it to us.

  715. But what does

  716. eternal separation

  717. from God mean?

  718. Well,

  719. in Matthew chapter 25,

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  720. Jesus tells

  721. three parables

  722. about what

  723. that final reality

  724. entails.

  725. We actually read

  726. one of those parables

  727. from Matthew chapter 25

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  728. earlier in the service.

  729. And these metaphors

  730. that Jesus uses

  731. describe something

  732. that is

  733. unimaginably

  734. terrible.

  735. In fact,

  736. Jesus Himself

  737. talked more

  738. about this reality

  739. than anyone else

  740. in the Bible.

  741. So,

  742. even if you don't believe

  743. that Jesus

  744. was the Son of God,

  745. if you at least

  746. think that Jesus

  747. was a great

  748. spiritual teacher,

  749. you have to consider

  750. what He says

  751. about this.

  752. And the metaphors

  753. that He uses

  754. to describe

  755. this eternal

  756. separation

  757. from God

  758. are exclusion

  759. and darkness

  760. and fire.

  761. Exclusion,

  762. it's like being

  763. cut off

  764. from a feast,

  765. Jesus says,

  766. and left alone.

  767. And after all,

  768. if God is the source

  769. of joy and love,

  770. which He is,

  771. the eternal

  772. separation

  773. from Him

  774. must mean

  775. the absence

  776. of those things.

  777. So,

  778. what's left

  779. then?

  780. Bitterness,

  781. regret,

  782. anger,

  783. gnawing,

  784. loneliness?

  785. darkness?

  786. And then Jesus

  787. says,

  788. it's like darkness.

  789. After all,

  790. if God is the source

  791. of all light

  792. and truth,

  793. what must

  794. eternal separation

  795. from Him

  796. mean

  797. but the cold

  798. reality of darkness

  799. and fear

  800. and deception?

  801. And finally,

  802. Jesus says,

  803. it's like fire.

  804. Of course,

  805. fire is not just

  806. painful.

  807. It's not,

  808. fire is not just

  809. an image of suffering

  810. but fire also

  811. disintegrates,

  812. doesn't it?

  813. It turns everything

  814. it touches

  815. to ash.

  816. And after all,

  817. if God is the source

  818. of our wholeness

  819. and our safety

  820. and our peace,

  821. then to be separated

  822. from God

  823. must mean

  824. the eternal

  825. anguish

  826. of seeing

  827. our lives

  828. amount

  829. to nothing

  830. but ash.

  831. And you know,

  832. the greatest terror

  833. of all

  834. is that this outcome

  835. of divine justice,

  836. this separation

  837. from God

  838. will be without end

  839. and without repentance.

  840. We've all experienced

  841. exclusion

  842. and darkness

  843. and even fire

  844. in this life.

  845. But it's been

  846. temporary,

  847. right?

  848. Eventually,

  849. there's a stay.

  850. Eventually,

  851. there's a reprieve.

  852. But when the books

  853. are opened

  854. and God renders

  855. his judgment,

  856. when the final

  857. thy will be done

  858. is issued,

  859. it will be forever.

  860. And what's more,

  861. in every picture

  862. that the New Testament

  863. gives of this

  864. eternal state

  865. of separation

  866. from God,

  867. we see this.

  868. in that final state,

  869. no one repents.

  870. No one admits

  871. they've done wrong.

  872. No one asks God

  873. for forgiveness

  874. and release.

  875. Instead,

  876. it's only a perpetual

  877. hardening of heart

  878. as our earthly trajectory

  879. of self-justifying,

  880. self-centeredness

  881. just continues forever.

  882. forever.

  883. It's like a coin

  884. that's dropped

  885. in a bottomless well

  886. and it just keeps falling

  887. and never rises.

  888. this outcome

  889. of divine judgment

  890. is what

  891. Jesus calls

  892. hell

  893. and what John

  894. calls here

  895. the lake

  896. of fire.

  897. And like so much

  898. else in Revelation,

  899. the image of a lake

  900. of fire

  901. may be symbolic,

  902. but if it is

  903. a metaphor,

  904. don't you see?

  905. It's a metaphor

  906. for something

  907. infinitely worse.

  908. The just wrath

  909. of a holy God

  910. poured out

  911. on those

  912. who have rejected him.

  913. Now when we think

  914. about eternal

  915. separation from God,

  916. we sometimes think

  917. that,

  918. man,

  919. the punishment

  920. doesn't seem

  921. to fit the crime.

  922. I mean,

  923. how could my 60,

  924. 70,

  925. 80 years on earth

  926. deserve eternal

  927. separation?

  928. But the reality is

  929. to sin

  930. against an

  931. infinite God

  932. creates an

  933. infinite offense

  934. with an

  935. infinite debt

  936. to be paid.

  937. When the books

  938. of our life

  939. are opened,

  940. how many offenses

  941. will we read there?

  942. how many times

  943. have we disregarded

  944. and disobeyed

  945. this infinitely good

  946. and holy

  947. and beautiful God?

  948. How many infinites

  949. have we piled up

  950. in our short

  951. span of life?

  952. the cost

  953. of our sin

  954. is mathematically

  955. impossible

  956. to grasp.

  957. So what is it

  958. that we need

  959. to be saved from?

  960. Well,

  961. we need to be saved

  962. from the books

  963. of our own life,

  964. from the record

  965. that we've written.

  966. the reality

  967. of this final judgment,

  968. it's our only hope

  969. that our lives

  970. have any meaning

  971. at all,

  972. but what we find

  973. is that the books

  974. we bring,

  975. the record

  976. that we arrive

  977. with,

  978. they write our

  979. own condemnation.

  980. So what do we do?

  981. Where do we go?

  982. Well,

  983. maybe we think,

  984. I'll start writing

  985. some new chapters,

  986. right?

  987. I'll turn over

  988. a new leaf,

  989. I'll be a good person,

  990. I'll arrive

  991. with a better book,

  992. but friend,

  993. it won't work.

  994. Sin is too great.

  995. Maybe you'll swim,

  996. maybe you'll swim

  997. an extra 10

  998. or 20 miles offshore,

  999. but you won't reach

  1000. the destination.

  1001. you'll still sink.

  1002. And even those

  1003. extra chapters

  1004. that you've written,

  1005. won't they just be

  1006. another testament

  1007. to your desire

1008. to try to live life

  1009. independently of God,

  1010. to try to write

  1011. a righteous record

  1012. of your own,

1013. to do it your own way

  1014. so you don't have

  1015. to submit

  1016. to God's righteousness.

  1017. You arrive

  1018. with just another

  1019. testament

  1020. to your self-justifying

  1021. project

  1022. to be your own

  1023. Savior and Lord.

1024. So what do we do?

1025. How can we be saved

  1026. from the books

  1027. that we bring

  1028. to the judgment?

  1029. Well, this brings us

  1030. to our last point.

1031. We see in this text

  1032. not just the reality

  1033. and the outcome

  1034. of divine judgment,

  1035. but we also see

  1036. our only hope

1037. in the face of judgment.

  1038. You see,

  1039. in John's vision,

1040. the books of our lives

  1041. are opened

  1042. and they render us

  1043. condemned,

  1044. but there's another book.

  1045. There's another book

  1046. that's brought forth

  1047. what John calls here

  1048. the book of life.

  1049. And those whose names

  1050. are written

1051. in the book of life

  1052. are rescued

  1053. from the judgment

1054. that their own lives deserve.

1055. And what is this book of life?

  1056. Elsewhere in Revelation,

  1057. it's called

1058. the Lamb's book of life

  1059. or in another place,

  1060. the book of life

1061. that belongs to the Lamb

  1062. who was slain.

  1063. And if your name

1064. is written in that book,

1065. then you do not need

  1066. to receive the judgment

  1067. your books deserve.

1068. If your name is written

  1069. in that book,

  1070. you won't receive

  1071. the judgment

  1072. your books deserve.

  1073. Why?

  1074. How could that be?

  1075. Because for every name

  1076. that's written

1077. in the Lamb's book of life,

  1078. their judgment

  1079. has already been paid.

  1080. Their sentence

  1081. has already been served.

  1082. It's a record of everyone

  1083. whose judgment

  1084. has been paid.

1085. But how could that be?

1086. Think of it this way.

  1087. Here's the book

  1088. of your life, right?

  1089. Not the Bible.

  1090. I'm just using it

  1091. as an example, right?

  1092. Think of this as,

  1093. this is the record

  1094. of your life, right?

  1095. Well, it's books

  1096. in Revelation,

  1097. so there should be

  1098. two of them, okay?

  1099. Here are the books.

  1100. You've brought them, right?

1101. This is all your thoughts,

  1102. all your words,

  1103. all your deeds,

  1104. all your sins,

  1105. all your failures,

  1106. oh wait,

  1107. all your secrets

  1108. that no one

  1109. but God knows,

  1110. okay, they're all here.

  1111. But God saw you.

  1112. He saw you

  1113. carrying that record.

  1114. He knows the weight

1115. and He knows the guilt

  1116. and the shame.

  1117. And in love,

1118. He came in the person

  1119. of His Son, Jesus.

  1120. Jesus Christ,

1121. the eternal Son of God,

  1122. became human

  1123. and lived a life

  1124. of complete obedience

  1125. to the Father.

1126. Jesus actually did love God

  1127. with all His heart

  1128. and soul and mind

  1129. and strength.

  1130. Jesus actually did

  1131. love His neighbor

  1132. as Himself.

  1133. His record was flawless.

  1134. But His mission

  1135. wasn't just to live

  1136. the life that humans

  1137. should have lived.

  1138. His mission was also

1139. to come and to die,

  1140. to be the Lamb

  1141. who was slain.

  1142. So you see,

  1143. on the cross,

  1144. Jesus wasn't just

  1145. laying down His life

  1146. for His own sins.

1147. He didn't have any, right?

  1148. Like, there's no record

1149. of wrong in Jesus' life.

  1150. He was laying down

1151. His life for your sins.

  1152. At the cross,

  1153. your record,

  1154. your books,

  1155. were laid on Him.

1156. So what's left for you?

1157. You see, on the cross,

  1158. Jesus was willing

  1159. to undergo

  1160. the exclusion

  1161. and the darkness

  1162. and the fire

  1163. of separation

  1164. from the Father.

  1165. Jesus descended

  1166. into hell

  1167. on the cross

  1168. to pay the full

  1169. judgment of sin

  1170. for everyone

  1171. who repents

  1172. and trusts in Him.

  1173. And because He

  1174. is the eternal Son,

  1175. the infinite God incarnate,

  1176. He can actually pay

  1177. an infinite cost.

  1178. So do you see

  1179. how much

  1180. He loves you?

  1181. You know,

  1182. we often think

  1183. about hell

  1184. and we ask,

  1185. how could God

  1186. be a loving God

  1187. if hell is real?

  1188. But don't you see,

  1189. hell actually

  1190. shows us

  1191. the utter depths

  1192. of God's love

  1193. for us.

  1194. He was willing

  1195. to pay

  1196. even that price

  1197. to win you

  1198. and rescue you

  1199. and save you

  1200. from your own record.

  1201. heart.

  1202. Jesus endured

  1203. hell for you

  1204. so you can face

  1205. the final judgment

  1206. and live.

  1207. This is how

  1208. we're saved,

  1209. by trusting

  1210. in the One

  1211. who bore

  1212. our sins

  1213. on the cross

  1214. and who was

  1215. raised from the dead

  1216. three days later

  1217. to demonstrate

  1218. that the sacrifice

  1219. was complete,

  1220. that the penalty

  1221. was paid in full,

  1222. and that all

  1223. who trust in Him

  1224. receive the full

  1225. forgiveness of sins

  1226. and resurrection life

  1227. so that your name

  1228. could be written

  1229. in another book.

  1230. So the choice

  1231. before us

  1232. is this,

  1233. will you arrive

  1234. at the final judgment

  1235. trusting

  1236. in your own books

  1237. or trusting

  1238. in Christ?

  1239. And if you have

  1240. trusted in Him,

  1241. then your name

  1242. is written

1243. in His book of life

  1244. and no one

  1245. can blot it out,

  1246. no one

  1247. can erase it,

  1248. it's there

  1249. permanently

  1250. and forever.

  1251. forever.

  1252. You didn't deserve

  1253. to have your name

  1254. written in there,

  1255. so there's nothing

  1256. you can do

  1257. to deserve

  1258. having taken it out.

  1259. So Christians,

  1260. do you realize

  1261. what this means?

  1262. Do you realize

  1263. what it means

  1264. that your name

  1265. is written

1266. in the book of life?

  1267. First,

  1268. it means

  1269. that you have

  1270. a ground

  1271. for rejoicing.

  1272. You have a reason

  1273. for rejoicing

  1274. like nothing else.

  1275. It's very interesting,

  1276. in one point

  1277. in Jesus' ministry,

  1278. the disciples

  1279. come back to Jesus

  1280. after a super

  1281. successful ministry tour.

  1282. They've preached

  1283. and people believed,

  1284. they've cast out demons

  1285. and they've fleed,

  1286. and the disciples

  1287. come back

  1288. and they're ecstatic.

  1289. And Jesus says,

  1290. I saw Satan

  1291. fall like lightning

  1292. from heaven.

  1293. In other words,

  1294. He's like,

  1295. good job.

  1296. But then Jesus

  1297. says this,

  1298. He says,

  1299. nevertheless,

  1300. do not rejoice

  1301. in this,

  1302. that the spirits

  1303. are subject to you,

  1304. but rejoice

  1305. that your names

  1306. are written

  1307. in heaven.

  1308. To know

  1309. that your name

  1310. is in His book

  1311. written in heaven,

  1312. that you're known

  1313. and loved

  1314. by the King

  1315. of the universe,

  1316. free from condemnation,

  1317. free for eternal life,

1318. that will give you joy

  1319. like nothing else.

  1320. It's a joy

  1321. that your failures

  1322. can't touch

  1323. and it's a joy

  1324. that your successes

  1325. can't even compete with.

  1326. Jesus looked at them

  1327. and said,

1328. you had a great day.

  1329. Don't even rejoice

  1330. in that.

  1331. There's something

  1332. even better.

  1333. Your name's written

  1334. in heaven.

  1335. But if your name

  1336. is in His book,

  1337. if your name

  1338. is in His book,

  1339. it's not just

  1340. a ground for rejoicing,

  1341. but it also means

  1342. that your books

1343. take on a new meaning.

  1344. If your name

  1345. is written

1346. in the book of life,

  1347. then your books,

1348. the books of your life,

  1349. start to take on

  1350. a new meaning.

  1351. You know,

  1352. it might be tempting

  1353. to think,

  1354. well,

  1355. look,

  1356. if I'm not saved

  1357. by my works,

  1358. then my works

  1359. must not mean anything,

  1360. right?

  1361. And the truth is,

  1362. your works

  1363. will never justify you.

1364. They will never save you.

  1365. But for those

  1366. who trust in Christ,

  1367. God says,

  1368. I've prepared good works

  1369. in advance

  1370. for you to do.

  1371. You'll see the hungry

  1372. and you'll feed them.

  1373. you'll see the naked

  1374. and clothe them.

  1375. You'll see the sick

  1376. and imprisoned

1377. and you'll go visit them.

  1378. You will become

  1379. a force of love

  1380. that the world

  1381. doesn't understand.

  1382. Only those

  1383. who know the freedom

  1384. of having their names

  1385. written in heaven

  1386. can love freely.

  1387. Because it's those

  1388. who know mercy

  1389. that show mercy.

  1390. And that means

  1391. that there's this

  1392. new thread,

  1393. there's this new

  1394. literary motif

  1395. that starts to weave

  1396. its way

  1397. through your books.

  1398. It's this thread

  1399. of grace.

  1400. It's a thread

  1401. of God's glory.

  1402. It's a thread

  1403. of the Holy Spirit

  1404. making you more

  1405. and more like Christ.

  1406. Because now

  1407. your story

  1408. isn't about you anymore.

  1409. Suddenly,

  1410. the books you bring

  1411. to the judgment,

  1412. they're not about you.

  1413. They're not about

1414. how far you can swim.

  1415. They're about Christ.

1416. The hero of your story

  1417. isn't you anymore.

  1418. It's the Lord Jesus.

  1419. And that's what

  1420. baptism says.

  1421. In a beautiful

  1422. and symbolic way,

  1423. it says,

1424. my life is about Christ now.

1425. So for those of you

  1426. who are getting baptized

1427. over these next two Sundays,

  1428. let me say this

  1429. to you,

  1430. when you go down

  1431. into the water

1432. and come back up again,

  1433. you're saying

  1434. that your life

  1435. from now on

  1436. is about Him.

  1437. Jesus united Himself

  1438. to you

  1439. in the incarnation,

  1440. taking the judgment

  1441. you deserve

  1442. and rising again.

  1443. In other words,

  1444. He went down

  1445. and came back up.

  1446. And now,

  1447. through faith,

  1448. you've united yourself

  1449. to Him.

  1450. Your old life

  1451. has gone down

  1452. and your new life

  1453. has risen up.

  1454. He's the hero

  1455. of your books now.

  1456. But remember

  1457. what Jesus says,

  1458. because some days

  1459. will be good

  1460. and some days

  1461. will be full

  1462. of trials and doubts.

  1463. But remember

1464. that you have a joy now

  1465. that outstrips

  1466. even your best days.

  1467. Rejoice in this,

  1468. Jesus says,

  1469. that your names

  1470. are written in heaven.

  1471. In other words,

  1472. keep eternity in view.

  1473. The King has gone

  1474. through the eternal fire

  1475. for you.

  1476. He's engraved you

  1477. on the palms

  1478. of His hands

  1479. and in His grip

1480. He'll never let you go.

  1481. Your name will never,

  1482. ever be erased

  1483. from His book.

  1484. And that's true

  1485. of everyone

  1486. who's put their trust

  1487. in Christ.

1488. So live with that in view.

  1489. Live with the freedom

  1490. and the joy

  1491. and the perseverance

  1492. that that brings.

  1493. And friend,

  1494. if you haven't

  1495. put your life

1496. into the arms of Christ,

1497. what do you wait for?

  1498. Christ has done everything

  1499. to save you

  1500. from the eternal consequences

  1501. of your sin

  1502. and to save you

1503. for a life of joy

  1504. and purpose

  1505. now and without end.

  1506. It doesn't matter

  1507. how thick or thin

  1508. your books might be.

  1509. It doesn't matter

1510. how young or old you are.

  1511. It doesn't matter

  1512. how dark or shameful

  1513. your pages may be.

  1514. Jesus said,

1515. the one who comes to me,

1516. I'll never cast them out.

  1517. Never.

  1518. So come to Him.

  1519. Let's pray together.

1520. As we bow before God,

  1521. let's take a moment

  1522. of silence

  1523. before God.

  1524. We've considered

  1525. some weighty things today.

  1526. Things that our minds

1527. often push to the margins

  1528. of our hurried lives.

  1529. But right now,

  1530. we have the opportunity

  1531. to consider

  1532. the most important question

1533. a human could ever ask,

  1534. where do I stand

  1535. with God?

  1536. Some of us

  1537. have been attending services

  1538. and hearing the things

  1539. about Christ

  1540. and the gospel

  1541. and some of us

  1542. are maybe realizing

  1543. for the first time

  1544. that it is time.

1545. It's time to lay down

  1546. your books

  1547. and give yourself

  1548. to Christ.

  1549. If the Holy Spirit

  1550. is convicting you

  1551. in that way,

  1552. you might even pray

  1553. something simple

  1554. in your own heart

  1555. like this.

  1556. Father,

  1557. I realize that

  1558. in my own deeds,

  1559. I don't deserve

  1560. to be called

  1561. your child.

  1562. In fact,

  1563. I deserve eternity

  1564. apart from you.

  1565. But I trust

  1566. in what Christ

  1567. has done,

  1568. dying for my sins.

  1569. So I turn

  1570. from my sins

  1571. and my efforts

  1572. to save myself

  1573. and I take you,

  1574. Jesus,

  1575. as my Lord.

  1576. I commit my life

  1577. to you

  1578. and thank you

  1579. for receiving me,

  1580. forgiving me,

  1581. and making me

  1582. your child.

  1583. Fill me

  1584. with your Spirit

  1585. and let me live

  1586. all my days

  1587. in the assurance

  1588. that my name

  1589. is now written

  1590. in your book

  1591. of life.

  1592. Father,

  1593. we also pray

  1594. for those

  1595. who have turned

  1596. to you

  1597. and are getting

  1598. baptized over

  1599. these next two Sundays.

  1600. We pray for Jack

  1601. today.

  1602. Next week,

  1603. we pray for Dawn,

  1604. for Sherry,

  1605. for Stacy,

  1606. for Mandy.

  1607. Fill them

  1608. with your Spirit

  1609. as they make

  1610. this public

  1611. profession of faith.

  1612. Fan into flame

  1613. the good work

  1614. that you've begun

  1615. in them.

  1616. Let their lives

  1617. be lived

  1618. for your glory.

  1619. And would all

  1620. who've placed

  1621. their faith in Christ

  1622. rejoice

  1623. that our names

  1624. are written in heaven.

1625. And would we be eager

  1626. to share this joy,

  1627. this good news

  1628. of the gospel.

  1629. Use our church,

  1630. Lord,

  1631. for the glory

  1632. of your name.

  1633. and for the advance

  1634. of your gospel

  1635. among all nations.

  1636. Amen.
