  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. Summer is here.

  3. I'm glad to see some of you waving the fans.

  4. If you do get hot during the service,

  5. the service is being streamed in our overflow rooms

  6. and air conditioning, I believe.

  7. Right, Corbin?

  8. Yes, so there's an overflow room downstairs

  9. in the new edition that's air conditioned.

  10. You can watch the service down there.

  11. The fellowship hall, we also have the speaker on down there.

  12. You can go there.

  13. Or here's an even better option.

  14. If you've been coming to Trinity for four to six months,

  15. you can volunteer with children's ministry,

  16. which means that you can then enjoy the service

  17. in air conditioning while you spend time with children,

  18. which is probably one of the best things

  19. you can do for your soul, is spend time with kids.

  20. Because Jesus said,

  21. that's who the kingdom of heaven belongs to.

  22. So, with that being said,

  23. why don't we turn to Revelation chapter 22.

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

  24. We've come to the end of our series in Revelation today.

  25. Today, we are going to be considering verses 6 through 21.

  26. These verses form the epilogue,

  27. the kind of final words of this majestic book of Revelation.

  28. That's the last page in the Pew Bible.

  29. If you'd like to turn there with me,

  30. I will pray for us, and then I'll read,

  31. and then we'll dive in.

  32. Let's pray together.

  33. Father, we have just sung about the wondrous mystery

  34. of the incarnation of your Son,

  35. the perfect life of your Son,

  36. the atoning death of your Son,

  37. the glorious resurrection,

  38. and his mighty return.

  39. Father, this is what we want to see more and more of,

  40. Christ in all his glory and beauty.

  41. Because we know that as we behold Christ,

  42. we are not just changed into his likeness more and more,

  43. but you receive more and more of the glory and praise

  44. that you deserve,

  45. that we were created to give you.

  46. We find the very purpose for which we were made.

  47. So help us in these few moments

  48. as we turn to this final passage

  49. of this great book of Revelation

  50. to help us to see more and more of Christ

  51. by the power of your Spirit.

  52. Amen.

  53. All right, Revelation 22, 6 through 21.

  54. Remember, John, at this point in the book,

  55. has just been shown by an angel

  56. the glorious vision of the new heavens and the new earth,

  57. the future that God has in store for his people

  58. and for his creation.

  59. And then we read this.

  60. And he, that is the angel, said to me,

  61. these words are trustworthy and true,

  62. and the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets,

  63. has sent his angel to show his servants

  64. what must soon take place.

  65. And now John hears the voice of Jesus himself saying,

  66. and behold, I am coming soon.

  67. Blessed is the one who keeps the words

  68. of the prophecy of this book.

  69. I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things,

  70. and when I heard and saw them,

  71. I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel

  72. who showed them to me.

  73. But he said to me,

  74. you must not do that.

  75. I am a fellow servant with you

  76. and your brothers, the prophets,

  77. and with those who keep the words of this book.

  78. Worship God.

  79. And he said to me,

  80. do not seal up the words of this prophecy,

  81. of this book,

  82. for the time is near.

  83. Let the evildoer still do evil,

  84. and the filthy still be filthy,

  85. and the righteous still do right,

  86. and the holy still be holy.

  87. And again, John hears the voice of Jesus say,

  88. behold, I am coming soon,

  89. bringing my recompense with me

  90. to repay each one for what he has done.

  91. I am the alpha and the omega,

  92. the first and the last,

  93. the beginning and the end.

  94. Blessed are those who wash their robes

  95. so that they might have the right

  96. to the tree of life,

  97. and that they may enter the city by the gates.

  98. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers,

  99. and the sexually immoral,

  100. and murderers and idolaters,

  101. and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

  102. I, Jesus, have sent my angel

  103. to testify to you about these things

  104. for the churches.

  105. I am the root and the descendant of David,

  106. the bright morning star.

  107. The spirit and the bride say,

  108. come.

  109. And let the one who hears say,

  110. come.

  111. And let the one who is thirsty,

  112. come.

  113. Let the one who desires,

  114. take the water of life without price.

  115. I warn everyone who hears the words

  116. of the prophecy of this book.

  117. If anyone adds to them,

  118. God will add to him the plagues described in this book.

  119. And if anyone takes away from the words

  120. of the book of this prophecy,

  121. God will take away his share in the tree of life

  122. and in the holy city,

  123. which are described in this book.

  124. He who testifies to these things says,

  125. surely I am coming soon.

  126. Amen.

  127. Come, Lord Jesus.

  128. The grace of the Lord Jesus

  129. be with all.

  130. Amen.

  131. Amen.

  132. So, what is the final word

  133. of this great and powerful book of Revelation?

  134. What's the last thing that God wants

  135. ringing in our ears

  136. as the Bible comes to a close?

  137. Well, three times

  138. we hear the voice of Jesus say,

  139. I am coming soon.

  140. Verse 7,

  141. verse 12,

  142. and verse 20.

  143. Behold,

  144. surely

  145. I am coming

  146. soon.

  147. The imminent return of Jesus,

  148. that is the nearness

  149. of his return,

  150. that's the parting word.

  151. That's the final chord struck

  152. as the great symphony of Scripture

  153. comes to a close.

  154. And I want to ask

  155. two simple questions then

  156. as we draw our sermon series

  157. to a close.

  158. First,

  159. what does it mean

  160. that Jesus is coming soon?

  161. And second,

  162. how should we live now

  163. in light of that?

  164. What does it mean

  165. that Jesus is coming soon?

  166. And how do we live now

  167. in light of that?

  168. And as we answer

  169. those two questions,

  170. we'll see that this final passage

  171. of Revelation

  172. actually gathers together

  173. many of the great themes

  174. of this book

  175. one more time.

  176. So here we actually

  177. have a great summary

  178. of the application

  179. of this book

  180. as we draw our series

  181. to a close.

  182. So first,

  183. consider with me,

  184. what does it mean

  185. that Jesus is coming soon?

  186. Now perhaps,

  187. before we consider

  188. the soonness

  189. of Jesus' return,

  190. maybe we need to pause

  191. on the mere fact

  192. of his return.

  193. You see,

  194. nearly all the New Testament

  195. writers,

  196. and as a result,

  197. all of the historical creeds

  198. and confessions

  199. of Christianity

  200. through the ages

  201. have affirmed

  202. that Jesus will return.

  203. And not just spiritually

  204. or symbolically,

  205. but he will return bodily.

  206. Now of course,

  207. the idea of the bodily

  208. return of Christ

  209. can at first feel

  210. a little strange, right?

  211. How exactly are we supposed

  212. to imagine this kind of

  213. bodily return of Jesus

  214. from heaven?

  215. And yet,

  216. this is indeed

  217. what the New Testament teaches.

  218. As the angels said

  219. to the disciples,

  220. do you remember

  221. on the day of Jesus' ascension?

  222. The angels turned

  223. to the disciples

  224. and said,

  225. this Jesus who was taken

  226. up from you into heaven

  227. will come in the same way

  228. as you saw him go

  229. into heaven.

  230. So it may sound

  231. strange at first,

  232. but it is undoubtedly true.

  233. It stretches our imagination,

  234. but the stretching

  235. of our imagination

  236. is not a bad thing.

  237. After all,

  238. we need our finite imaginations

  239. stretched a little bit,

  240. don't we,

  241. so that we can begin

  242. to wrap our minds

  243. around the wonder of God

  244. and God's ways.

  245. Now you'll remember

  246. Revelation has given us

  247. multiple images

  248. of Christ's bodily return,

  249. hasn't it?

  250. Jesus will be like a groom

  251. coming for his bride.

  252. Jesus will be like

  253. a warrior king

  254. returning to bring peace

  255. and freedom to his country.

  256. Jesus will be like a judge

  257. coming to finally put things right

  258. and issue lasting justice.

  259. But if you struggle

  260. with the fact of Jesus' bodily return,

  261. I wonder if you realize

  262. what good news it is.

  263. After all,

  264. the bodily return of Jesus,

  265. it tells us something staggering,

  266. doesn't it?

  267. If Jesus is indeed

  268. to return in a body,

  269. does not that mean

  270. that our loving Savior

  271. who united himself

  272. to our humanity

  273. in his incarnation,

  274. if he's going to return

  275. in that same body,

  276. don't you see what that tells us?

  277. It tells us

  278. that Christ has not let us go.

  279. He has not let our humanity go.

  280. God the Son,

  281. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  282. will become

  283. and has become

  284. one with us forever.

  285. I mean,

  286. what greater token of love

  287. could there be?

  288. Even in his glorious return,

  289. Jesus will remain

  290. our incarnate Lord

  291. and our divine lover

  292. who took the form of a servant,

  293. humbled himself to death

  294. on a cross,

  295. who rose on the third day

  296. in love,

  297. Jesus took our flesh

  298. and even in glory,

  299. he's not let it go.

  300. It's kind of like

  301. the soldiers

  302. on the front lines of war,

  303. you know,

  304. who kind of carry

  305. in their innermost pocket

  306. of their vest

  307. a picture of their loved ones

  308. or their family

  309. who they cherish.

  310. They take with them

  311. what matters most

  312. into battle

  313. and home again.

  314. It's like that.

  315. Jesus has assumed our flesh.

  316. He's kept it close

  317. and he's going to carry it

  318. for eternity.

  319. To put it simply,

  320. do you wonder

  321. if God loves you?

  322. Then consider Christ

  323. will return in a body

  324. marked with scars

  325. because he loves you.

  326. But if you're still

  327. kind of wrestling

  328. with this fact

  329. of Jesus' bodily return,

  330. consider not just

  331. what it tells us

  332. about God's love for us,

  333. but also what it tells us

  334. about this material creation,

  335. this bodily existence

  336. that we inhabit.

  337. You know,

  338. many religions of the world

  339. see as their goal

  340. the kind of escape

  341. of the material world,

  342. right?

  343. In their view,

  344. this material world

  345. is full of change

  346. and suffering

  347. and the body

  348. is finite and frail,

  349. so the goal then

  350. is to escape the body,

  351. to escape the material world.

  352. But that's not Christianity.

  353. Christianity,

  354. while acknowledging

  355. the brokenness

  356. and fallenness

  357. of the world,

  358. affirms the material world's goodness,

  359. affirms bodies

  360. and bodily existence.

  361. How does it do that?

  362. Well, friend,

  363. if the Lord of the universe

  364. chose to come

  365. and to live

  366. and to die

  367. and to rise

  368. and even return

  369. in a material body,

  370. then these bodies of ours

  371. must be

  372. of incalculable worth.

  373. You won't find

  374. a worldview

  375. or a religion

  376. that is as embracing

  377. of material creation

  378. and bodily existence

  379. than the faith

  380. that centers

  381. around Jesus Christ.

  382. And this is why

  383. Christians care so much

  384. about work

  385. and art

  386. and culture,

  387. because these material

  388. means are part

  389. of the worship

  390. of the incarnate

  391. and returning Lord.

  392. and this is why

  393. Christians care so much

  394. about what we do

  395. with our bodies,

  396. right,

  397. and what happens

  398. to our fellow humans' bodies,

  399. right?

  400. We care about these bodies

  401. that God has given us,

  402. whether it's an unborn child

  403. or an international refugee

  404. or an elderly neighbor.

  405. Christians affirm

  406. the dignity

  407. of every human body,

  408. regardless

  409. of how politically

  410. or culturally fashionable

  411. or unfashionable

  412. that affirmation may be.

  413. Because our ethics,

  414. friends,

  415. they're tethered.

  416. What are our ethics

  417. tethered to as believers?

  418. Not to the passing whim

  419. of our kind of

  420. social sensibilities,

  421. but what we believe

  422. is right and good

  423. and the fullness of life.

  424. What's it tethered to?

  425. It's tethered to

  426. the body of Jesus,

  427. a body that's broken for us,

  428. a body that's been risen for us,

  429. and a body that's

  430. returning in glory.

  431. So the fact

  432. of the bodily return

  433. of Christ

  434. is good news.

  435. It's good news

  436. that God loves us,

  437. and it's good news

  438. that this material world,

  439. this bodily existence

  440. that we inhabit

  441. is good.

  442. But what about

  443. the nearness

  444. of Jesus' return?

  445. Behold,

  446. I'm coming soon,

  447. Jesus says.

  448. Now,

  449. we have to be honest,

  450. right?

  451. Living nearly

  452. 2,000 years

  453. after Jesus' ascension,

  454. it doesn't exactly feel

  455. like Jesus' return

  456. is soon,

  457. right?

  458. But we have to remember

  459. that the nearness

  460. of Jesus' return

  461. isn't necessarily

  462. a chronological statement.

  463. It's a redemptive

  464. historical statement.

  465. Here's what I mean.

  466. That Jesus' coming soon

  467. isn't about measuring

  468. hours and days

  469. and months and years,

  470. right?

  471. That's chronology.

  472. That's clock time.

  473. That's kind of ordinary time.

  474. That's not the sort of

  475. nearness we're talking about.

  476. Rather,

  477. what we're talking about

  478. is what part of the story

  479. we're in.

  480. In the story of redemption

  481. that began in Genesis 3,

  482. when God promised

  483. to send one

  484. who would crush

  485. the head of the serpent,

  486. when redemptive history

  487. began from that moment,

  488. what chapter are we in?

  489. Are we in the first chapter

  490. with many to go?

  491. Are we in the second,

  492. the third?

  493. No, friends,

  494. we exist

  495. in the last chapter

  496. of God's redemptive history.

  497. This is it.

  498. The Messiah has come.

  499. The decisive victory

  500. has been won

  501. over sin and death

  502. in His death

  503. and resurrection.

  504. He has ascended

  505. to His throne.

  506. His message

  507. of forgiveness

  508. and freedom

  509. is resounding forth

  510. to the nations

  511. through the proclamation

  512. of the gospel of grace.

  513. the movement of Jesus.

  514. The kingdom of God

  515. has advanced

  516. around the world.

  517. This is the last chapter

  518. that we're living.

  519. Or as the New Testament writers

  520. say over and over again,

  521. these are the last days.

  522. And what is it we're waiting for

  523. in these last days?

  524. Well, there's one last part

  525. to the story.

  526. The return of the King.

  527. At any moment,

  528. the trumpet could sound,

  529. the clouds could part,

  530. and the Lord Jesus

  531. will descend in glory.

  532. You see,

  533. from the perspective

  534. of redemptive history,

  535. from the perspective

  536. of the story

  537. we find ourselves in,

  538. Jesus is coming soon.

  539. Soon,

  540. the heavenly groom

  541. will come for His bride,

  542. and we will feast

  543. with Him in love.

  544. Soon,

  545. the divine champion

  546. will come

  547. to defeat His enemies

  548. and liberate creation

  549. from oppression.

  550. Soon,

  551. the perfect judge

  552. will come

  553. to put all things right

  554. and justice will flow

  555. like rivers and streams.

  556. Soon,

  557. the sun and moon

  558. will be outshone

  559. by the glory of God

  560. and the Lamb

  561. dwelling in the midst

  562. of the new city

  563. where people

  564. from every tribe

  565. and tongue and nation

  566. will gather

  567. to worship Him

  568. and to reign with Him.

  569. Soon,

  570. there will be

  571. no more death,

  572. no more decay,

  573. no more tears,

  574. and no more sin.

  575. On that day,

  576. what a great day,

  577. it will be impossible

  578. for us

  579. to sin.

  580. There will be no going back

  581. to the old ways.

  582. God will be all in all.

  583. There will be no ocean

  584. of chaos

  585. or destruction

  586. or death,

  587. only an ocean

  588. of triune love,

  589. the bottom of which

  590. we will never reach

  591. world without end

  592. soon.

  593. And that's why we pray

  594. with verse 20.

  595. Come,

  596. Lord Jesus.

  597. Jesus.

  598. The church eagerly

  599. longs for the return

  600. of Christ.

  601. As the Apostle Paul

  602. says in 2 Timothy 4,

  603. 8,

  604. we love His appearing.

  605. Do you love His appearing,

  606. brothers and sisters?

  607. Are you eager

  608. for His day to come?

  609. Do you pray,

  610. come,

  611. Lord Jesus?

  612. That's one of the most

  613. ancient prayers

  614. of the church.

  615. We see it reflected

  616. in verse 17.

  617. The spirit and the bride

  618. say,

  619. come.

  620. Let the one who hears

  621. say,

  622. come.

  623. And then there's a twist.

  624. Let the one who is thirsty

  625. come.

  626. As we pray this prayer

  627. for Jesus to come,

  628. it's also an invitation

  629. to the thirsty.

  630. For the soul

  631. that's thirsty

  632. for hope,

  633. come.

  634. Let the one who desires

  635. take the water of life

  636. without price.

  637. this drink

  638. will satisfy you.

  639. This drink

  640. will give you a hope

  641. like no other.

  642. Jesus has paid the price

  643. so you can drink deeply

  644. of His grace

  645. now,

  646. of His life

  647. now,

  648. and when He returns,

  649. you will drink

  650. the fullness

  651. of unending joy.

  652. We long

  653. for His coming

  654. like thirsty people

  655. longing for a drink.

  656. Of course,

  657. there will be some

  658. who scoff at this idea.

  659. The Apostle Peter

  660. speaks to this very thing

  661. in the reading

  662. that we heard earlier

  663. in the service.

  664. Where is the promise

  665. of His coming,

  666. some were saying,

  667. even in Peter's day.

  668. But you remember

  669. how the Apostle

  670. responded to that?

  671. He said,

  672. don't overlook this fact,

  673. beloved,

  674. that with the Lord

  675. one day is as a thousand years,

  676. and a thousand years

  677. is one day.

  678. The Lord is not slow

  679. to fulfill His promise

  680. as some count slowness,

  681. but is patient toward you,

  682. not wishing that any

  683. should perish,

  684. but that all should

  685. reach repentance.

  686. You see,

  687. if,

  688. from our finite perspective,

  689. the Lord seems to be

  690. delaying His return,

  691. it's not because

  692. His promise is untrue,

  693. but because His patience

  694. is so great.

  695. You see,

  696. the truth about us

  697. is that we've lived

  698. our lives

  699. in our own steam.

  700. You know,

  701. you and I,

  702. you've been your own master,

  703. your own king,

  704. your own savior.

  705. You've dug your own wells.

  706. We all have.

  707. But they can't hold any water.

  708. You see,

  709. in running our lives

  710. our own way,

  711. the prophet Jeremiah says,

  712. we've rejected the fount

  713. of living water,

  714. and we've dug our own wells

  715. that can't even hold any.

  716. But what is repentance?

  717. Repentance is admitting

  718. that you've been running

  719. your life your own way,

  720. and it's turning

  721. to surrender your life

  722. to the one who lived

  723. and died for you,

  724. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  725. Repentance means

  726. admitting you're not God

  727. and taking Jesus as Lord.

  728. Repentance means

  729. admitting that you can't

  730. please God

  731. by your own good works

  732. and resting completely

  733. in Jesus' record

  734. instead of your own.

  735. See,

  736. at its heart,

  737. repentance,

  738. it's a transfer

  739. of trust,

  740. you see.

  741. In our natural

  742. fallen state,

  743. we trust in ourselves,

  744. we trust in created things.

  745. That's actually

  746. what the Bible

  747. defines as sin.

  748. trusting in ourselves

  749. and in created things.

  750. But repentance means

  751. to transfer our trust

  752. from those things

  753. to the risen Jesus.

  754. And here's the truly

  755. amazing thing.

  756. Consider what Scripture

  757. says is true

  758. for all who make

  759. that transfer of trust

  760. the Bible calls repentance.

  761. We come bankrupt

  762. to Jesus,

  763. and we are given

  764. the riches of His grace.

  765. We come spiritually dead

  766. and we're made

  767. spiritually alive.

  768. We come dirty

  769. and full of shame

  770. and we're clothed

  771. in glory and honor.

  772. We come as rebels

  773. and we're embraced

  774. as sons and daughters.

  775. We come as moral failures

  776. and we're credited

  777. with perfect righteousness.

  778. We come with empty hands

  779. and we're given

  780. a full measure,

  781. shifted and shaken down

  782. and overflowing,

  783. put right into our lap.

  784. We come without hope,

  785. with no future

  786. to look forward to,

  787. and we're given

  788. eternity.

  789. An ever-satisfying

  790. eternity

  791. that causes us to pray,

  792. come, Lord Jesus.

  793. So this is what it means

  794. that Jesus is coming soon.

  795. That's the first question

  796. we've been asking

  797. of this final section

  798. of Revelation.

  799. Behold, I'm coming soon.

  800. It means that we live

  801. in the last act

  802. of the drama of redemption

  803. and Jesus could return

  804. in glory at any moment

  805. to judge and to save.

  806. So we long for that moment

  807. and we prepare for that moment

  808. with genuine repentance.

  809. But now we need to ask,

  810. how do we live now

  811. in light of His coming soon?

  812. How do we live

  813. knowing that Jesus

  814. is coming soon?

  815. Well, with the little bit

  816. of time we have left,

  817. let me mention just four things

  818. we see in our passage.

  819. As we eagerly long

  820. for Jesus' return,

  821. as we pray,

  822. come, Lord Jesus,

  823. with our hearts aflame

  824. with love and expectation,

  825. this passage presents

  826. four practical ways to live

  827. and each of these

  828. actually harkens back

  829. to a major application

  830. of the whole book

  831. of Revelation.

  832. So what do we see first?

  833. First, we're told

  834. to worship God alone.

  835. In verse 8,

  836. John falls down in worship

  837. before the angelic messenger

  838. who showed him

  839. all these things,

  840. but the angel says,

  841. don't do that.

  842. I'm a servant just like you,

  843. like all who hear this book.

  844. Worship God.

  845. And friends,

  846. hasn't that been

  847. the great theme

  848. of this book?

  849. God.

  850. He alone

  851. is worthy

  852. of worship.

  853. Reread chapters 4

  854. and 5,

  855. the great throne room

  856. scene in heaven.

  857. Let this book

  858. remind you

  859. that all the imitations

  860. of this world,

  861. the dragon

  862. and his beasts

  863. of power

  864. and prosperity,

  865. none of that

  866. should capture our hearts.

  867. Only God.

  868. fear God

  869. and you have

  870. nothing to fear.

  871. But this book

  872. has also showed us

  873. who God is.

  874. God is not

  875. some distant deity.

  876. He's not some

  877. philosophical construct,

  878. some unmoved mover.

  879. No,

  880. the one true God

  881. has made himself

  882. known

  883. in the face

  884. of Jesus Christ.

  885. Sitting on the throne,

  886. worthy of worship,

  887. is whom?

  888. The Lamb.

  889. Worship God,

  890. the angel says,

  891. and all of heaven

  892. and earth

  893. worships

  894. the Lamb.

  895. And this is

  896. no contradiction

  897. because Jesus

  898. is one

  899. with God the Father.

  900. As he says here

  901. in verse 13,

  902. Jesus says,

  903. I'm the alpha

  904. and the omega,

  905. the first and the last,

  906. the beginning and the end.

  907. Do you remember

  908. where we heard

  909. those words earlier

  910. in this book?

  911. All the way back

  912. in chapter 1,

  913. verse 8,

  914. those very words

  915. are spoken

  916. by the Lord God,

  917. God the Father.

  918. Here is Jesus

  919. saying the same

  920. exact thing

  921. because the Father

  922. and the Son

  923. are one.

  924. So we long

  925. for Jesus' return

  926. and we don't give

  927. our hearts

  928. allegiance

  929. to any lesser God

  930. than the Lamb

  931. who sits on the throne.

  932. You know,

  933. it's interesting

  934. that John here

  935. was tempted

  936. to worship

  937. the one who brought

  938. him this message.

  939. And can't that

  940. sometimes be

  941. our temptation too?

  942. To revere

  943. kind of a great

  944. Christian leader

  945. or to sort of

  946. revere a great

  947. Christian movement.

  948. We sort of place

  949. them on a pedestal

  950. but when we find

  951. that they have

  952. feet of clay,

  953. what happens?

  954. Suddenly our faith

  955. is shaken.

  956. No, friends,

  957. we must worship

  958. God,

  959. not the messenger.

  960. We can thank God

  961. for those who have

  962. mentored us

  963. and discipled us.

  964. These are great gifts.

  965. It's good to have

  966. heroes of the faith

  967. to emulate.

  968. But we must not

  969. worship them.

  970. Our worship belongs

  971. to Christ alone.

  972. So that's the first

  973. practical way

  974. we live now

  975. in light of Jesus'

  976. coming soon.

  977. We worship God alone.

  978. Second,

  979. we persevere.

  980. In holiness.

  981. In verses 10 through 14,

  982. we hear the angel

  983. tell John,

  984. don't seal up the book.

  985. Now it's interesting,

  986. that's the exact opposite

  987. of what the prophet

  988. Daniel was told

  989. all the way back

  990. in Daniel 12.

  991. For Daniel,

  992. the events that he saw

  993. were a long way off

  994. so the angel said,

  995. seal up the book.

  996. But for John,

  997. these events

  998. were underway.

  999. So he's told,

  1000. don't seal it up.

  1001. Let its message go.

1002. And then in verse 11,

  1003. we have this

  1004. strange message.

  1005. Let the evildoers

  1006. still do evil,

  1007. and the filthy

  1008. still be filthy,

  1009. and the righteous

  1010. still do right,

  1011. and the holy

  1012. still be holy.

  1013. That's a strange verse,

  1014. isn't it?

  1015. At first,

  1016. it kind of sounds

  1017. a bit fatalistic,

  1018. right?

  1019. A bit resigned.

  1020. Well,

  1021. if evil people

1022. are going to do evil,

  1023. we might as well

  1024. let them,

  1025. right?

  1026. But I don't think

  1027. that's the point

  1028. that is being made.

  1029. Rather,

  1030. the meaning

  1031. seems to be this.

  1032. Even if

  1033. evildoers

  1034. go on doing evil,

  1035. even if the shameful

  1036. go on doing

  1037. shameful things,

  1038. and they will,

  1039. you must be different.

  1040. Let the righteous

  1041. still do right,

  1042. and the holy

  1043. still be holy.

  1044. Persevere

  1045. in Christ's likeness,

  1046. even if the world

  1047. around you

  1048. is not.

  1049. And again,

  1050. hasn't this been

  1051. a great theme

  1052. of Revelation?

  1053. The theme

  1054. to overcome,

  1055. to be conquerors.

  1056. Conquerors,

1057. not in a worldly sense,

1058. but in the Christian sense,

  1059. that is to remain

1060. faithful to the Lord Jesus,

  1061. even though the world

1062. may despise you for it.

1063. And what is the incentive

  1064. for doing so?

  1065. Verse 12,

  1066. Behold,

  1067. I'm coming soon,

  1068. Jesus says,

  1069. bringing my recompense

  1070. with me

  1071. to repay each one

1072. for what he has done.

  1073. A perfect reckoning

  1074. is coming,

  1075. and soon.

  1076. For those who persist

  1077. in rejecting God's grace

  1078. in this life,

1079. their works will be found

  1080. wanting.

1081. Those who seem to be

  1082. on the inside

  1083. in this life,

  1084. verse 15 says,

  1085. they will be forever

  1086. on the outside

  1087. of the eternal city,

  1088. never to enter.

  1089. But for those

  1090. who have been washed

  1091. in the saving blood

  1092. of Christ,

  1093. those who have received

  1094. a righteousness

  1095. not their own,

  1096. those who have

  1097. humbled themselves

  1098. before the throne

  1099. of God

  1100. to be saved

  1101. by his grace

  1102. and not their works,

  1103. we're told

  1104. something wonderful

  1105. will be true

  1106. and almost too hard,

  1107. almost hard to believe.

  1108. We're told

  1109. that the good works

  1110. Christians have done

  1111. in this life,

  1112. though they will not

  1113. be what saves us

  1114. or justifies us

  1115. or earns God favor,

  1116. even so,

  1117. those humble,

  1118. imperfect,

  1119. good works of ours

  1120. will be rewarded

  1121. in the new heavens

  1122. and new earth.

  1123. It will be grace

  1124. upon grace.

  1125. We will be saved

  1126. by grace alone,

  1127. and yet,

  1128. even our imperfect deeds

  1129. done in faith

  1130. in this life

  1131. will receive a reward

  1132. from Christ.

  1133. What a gracious king.

  1134. He will give us

  1135. a reward

  1136. holy by grace,

  1137. holy as an act

  1138. of loving kindness.

  1139. You see,

  1140. every act

  1141. of persevering faith,

  1142. every good work

  1143. done in secret,

  1144. every sacrifice,

  1145. every kind word,

  1146. every act

  1147. of forgiveness,

  1148. Christ will acknowledge

  1149. them all

  1150. and they will receive

  1151. their reward.

  1152. of course,

  1153. the greatest reward,

  1154. though,

  1155. won't be what God

  1156. chooses to give

  1157. for our imperfect

  1158. good works.

  1159. The greatest reward

  1160. we will receive

  1161. will be the presence

  1162. of Christ himself.

1163. We will have the right

1164. to the tree of life,

  1165. the right to enter

1166. the city by the gates,

1167. and who is in the midst

  1168. of that city?

1169. Who is the tree of life?

  1170. It's Christ.

  1171. Christ.

  1172. Now,

  1173. as we long

  1174. for Christ's return,

  1175. as we long

  1176. for this eternity

  1177. with him

  1178. in the new heavens

  1179. and new earth,

  1180. we can't help

1181. but want to be like him

  1182. in this life.

  1183. You know,

  1184. isn't that true

  1185. of the sort of

  1186. earthly heroes

  1187. or people you

  1188. kind of admire?

  1189. You study them,

  1190. you see them,

  1191. and you start

  1192. to emulate them,

  1193. right?

1194. You start to imitate them.

  1195. It's the same

  1196. in our relationship

  1197. with Christ.

1198. He should be the one

  1199. we ultimately worship

  1200. and we ultimately emulate,

  1201. and as we long

  1202. for his appearing,

  1203. for his return,

  1204. as we long

  1205. to be with him,

  1206. we live more

  1207. and more like him.

  1208. Nearly every New Testament

  1209. writer draws

  1210. this connection.

  1211. The Apostle Peter says,

  1212. what sort of people

  1213. ought you to be

1214. but those who live lives

  1215. of holiness

  1216. and godliness,

  1217. waiting for and hastening

1218. the coming of the day

  1219. of God?

  1220. The Apostle Paul says,

  1221. keep the commandment

  1222. unstained and free

  1223. from approach

  1224. until the appearing

1225. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1226. which he will display

  1227. at the proper time.

1228. He who is the only

  1229. blessed and only sovereign,

  1230. the King of kings

  1231. and Lord of lords.

  1232. And the Apostle John

  1233. probably says it

  1234. the most clear.

  1235. He says,

  1236. beloved,

1237. we are God's children now

1238. and what we will be

  1239. has not yet appeared,

  1240. but we know

  1241. that when he appears,

1242. we shall be like him

1243. because we shall see him

  1244. as he is.

  1245. And then he says,

  1246. and everyone who thus

  1247. hopes in him

  1248. purifies himself

1249. even as he is pure.

  1250. So as we long

  1251. for Christ's coming soon,

  1252. we persevere

  1253. in Christ's likeness,

  1254. wanting to become

  1255. like this one

1256. we are longing to see.

1257. So how do we act now

1258. in light of Jesus' coming?

  1259. We worship God alone.

  1260. We persevere in holiness.

  1261. And third,

  1262. we hold fast

  1263. to the whole word.

  1264. We hold fast

  1265. to the whole word.

  1266. In verses 19,

  1267. in verses 18 and 19,

  1268. there's a warning.

  1269. There's a warning

  1270. against those

  1271. who might add

  1272. or take away

  1273. from what's written

1274. in the book of Revelation.

1275. And this is an echo

1276. from the book of Deuteronomy.

1277. As Moses is sort of

  1278. beginning the final book

  1279. of the law

  1280. on the brink

  1281. of the promised land,

  1282. God tells Israel

  1283. through Moses,

  1284. you shall not add

  1285. to the word

  1286. that I command you,

  1287. nor take from it

  1288. that you may keep

  1289. the commandments

1290. of the Lord your God

  1291. that I command you.

  1292. It's a similar thing

  1293. John is saying here

1294. at the end of Revelation.

  1295. Here, as this book

  1296. comes to an end,

1297. we find a similar warning.

  1298. Don't add

  1299. and don't take away.

  1300. You see,

  1301. there's always

  1302. the temptation

  1303. when reading God's word

  1304. to add

  1305. or to take away.

  1306. So often,

1307. we want to add things

  1308. that we think

  1309. ought to be there.

1310. Or we want to take away

  1311. things that we think

  1312. shouldn't be there.

  1313. And John says,

  1314. when it comes

  1315. to this book

  1316. of Revelation,

  1317. don't add anything,

  1318. don't take anything away.

  1319. Now, if Revelation

  1320. is about anything,

  1321. what is it about?

  1322. Well, I hope we've seen

  1323. that it's about

  1324. the gospel itself,

1325. that God is the creator

  1326. of all things,

  1327. that humans have tragically

  1328. rebelled against

  1329. their creator

  1330. and deserve eternal death

  1331. for their sin.

  1332. But God,

  1333. in his unimaginable grace,

  1334. did the unthinkable

  1335. instead of condemning

  1336. humanity justly,

1337. he became a human being

  1338. and was condemned.

  1339. He was willing

  1340. to become himself

  1341. the substitute

  1342. for the very creatures

  1343. who offended him.

  1344. And in so doing,

  1345. he satisfied

  1346. both his justice

  1347. and his mercy.

  1348. In justice,

  1349. the penalty of death

  1350. against sinful humans

  1351. was paid.

  1352. In mercy,

  1353. there's forgiveness

  1354. for all who trust

  1355. in the substitute

  1356. who is the Lamb,

  1357. the Lord Jesus.

  1358. Jesus.

  1359. Now, too often

  1360. when we think about

  1361. that message,

  1362. too often we want

  1363. to add to it,

  1364. right?

  1365. We don't believe

  1366. that God would save

  1367. through grace alone,

  1368. by faith alone,

1369. so we add to it.

1370. We add something to it.

  1371. We add certain rules,

  1372. we add certain

  1373. cultural practices,

  1374. we add certain

  1375. religious rituals

  1376. or rites.

  1377. And it's funny

  1378. that the tradition

  1379. of the church,

  1380. if you look through

1381. the history of the church,

  1382. it's sort of this

  1383. constant battle

  1384. with being tempted

  1385. to add something

  1386. to the message

  1387. of salvation

  1388. by grace

  1389. through faith.

  1390. But in adding

  1391. to the words

  1392. of Scripture,

  1393. John says something

  1394. pretty scary.

  1395. We're actually adding

  1396. judgment upon ourselves.

  1397. He says,

  1398. the plagues

  1399. described in this book

  1400. will be added

  1401. to those who add.

  1402. And that makes sense,

  1403. actually,

1404. when you think about it.

  1405. Because if we think

1406. that we can't be saved

  1407. by just grace alone,

1408. if we think that we can

  1409. contribute to our salvation,

1410. and if we twist the Bible

  1411. so that others start

1412. to think the same thing,

  1413. then what's happening?

  1414. The more and more

  1415. we do that,

  1416. the farther and farther

  1417. we're separating ourselves

  1418. from Christ,

1419. the only hope of salvation.

  1420. Paul says something

  1421. very similar in Galatians

  1422. when he's talking

  1423. about people who think

1424. that you need to be circumcised

1425. in order to be saved.

  1426. He says,

  1427. look,

1428. if you pursue that path,

  1429. you're actually cutting yourselves

  1430. off from Christ.

  1431. Because you're trusting

  1432. in your circumcision,

  1433. not in Jesus.

  1434. If we had,

  1435. we're separating ourselves

  1436. from Christ.

  1437. But the opposite tendency

  1438. is also true.

  1439. We're also tempted

  1440. to take away,

  1441. aren't we?

  1442. The book of Revelation

  1443. has shown us

1444. the reality of God's judgment,

  1445. hasn't it?

  1446. The awesomeness

  1447. of His holiness.

  1448. The incompatibility

1449. of a lifestyle of sin

  1450. with a profession

1451. with a profession of Christ.

  1452. So we're tempted

1453. to take those things away.

  1454. Take away God's wrath

  1455. against sin.

  1456. Take away God's call

1457. to holiness in the church.

1458. But when we take away

  1459. God's holiness

  1460. and God's wrath,

  1461. we take away

  1462. the very heart

  1463. of the gospel itself.

  1464. for the gospel says

  1465. that God does

  1466. and will judge sin.

  1467. Friends,

1468. you and I are sinners

  1469. who deserve wrath.

  1470. Without that,

1471. the gospel makes no sense.

  1472. Think about it.

  1473. Why in the world

  1474. would Jesus

  1475. have to die

  1476. on a cross

  1477. if our sins

  1478. weren't more terrible

  1479. than we could imagine?

1480. Why would Jesus cry out,

  1481. my God,

  1482. my God,

1483. why have you forsaken me

1484. if there were no wrath

  1485. against sin?

  1486. If you take away

  1487. God's wrath,

  1488. you simultaneously

  1489. take away God's love

  1490. because then the cross

  1491. is just a tragedy.

  1492. It's just a mistake.

  1493. It's just an accident

  1494. of history.

1495. But what is the cross,

  1496. really?

  1497. The cross

  1498. is the greatest demonstration

1499. of the love of God.

  1500. That from eternity,

1501. God set his saving love

  1502. on lost sinners

1503. and planned to redeem them

  1504. through an infinite cost

  1505. to himself.

  1506. That he would bear

  1507. the cost

  1508. of the just wrath

  1509. against our sin

  1510. in love for us.

  1511. And as Revelation

  1512. has told us

  1513. more than once,

1514. the Lamb's book of life

  1515. was written

  1516. before the foundation

  1517. of the world.

1518. This had been God's plan

  1519. all along.

  1520. So we must not

  1521. take it away.

  1522. So we must remain

  1523. faithful in our message.

  1524. Neither add

  1525. nor take away.

  1526. And friends,

  1527. we won't always

  1528. get it right.

  1529. Sometimes our interpretation

  1530. of things

  1531. will not be right.

  1532. You know,

1533. when we all get to heaven

  1534. one day,

  1535. I'm sure the Lord

  1536. is going to say,

  1537. you know those things

  1538. that Nick taught you

1539. about the book of Revelation?

  1540. You know,

  1541. some of those things

  1542. were a little off.

  1543. I don't think he got

  1544. all those symbols right.

  1545. Right?

  1546. You know,

  1547. we won't always

  1548. get the interpretation right.

  1549. But that's different

1550. than adding and taking away.

  1551. We have to always

  1552. come back to Scripture.

  1553. We have to always

1554. come back to these words

  1555. that God breathed out

  1556. for our teaching,

  1557. our reproof,

  1558. our correction,

  1559. our training

  1560. in righteousness.

  1561. You see, friends,

  1562. it's through the canon

  1563. of Scripture

  1564. that the King

  1565. leads His church.

  1566. So we cherish

  1567. every word

1568. and we hold it up

  1569. knowing that this book

  1570. is good news,

  1571. that the gospel

  1572. it proclaims

1573. is the power of God

  1574. for salvation

  1575. to all who believe.

1576. So as we eagerly long

  1577. for Jesus to return,

  1578. we hold fast

  1579. to the whole word.

  1580. Every word is precious.

  1581. You know,

1582. if you found a box

  1583. of letters

  1584. in your attic

  1585. from a late grandparent,

  1586. you say,

  1587. I mean,

  1588. wouldn't you prize them

  1589. if you discovered them?

  1590. You know,

  1591. what if you discovered

  1592. that they were all

  1593. actually addressed to you?

  1594. What if you discovered

1595. a whole trove of letters

  1596. full of wisdom,

  1597. full of stories

  1598. about your family history,

  1599. full of expressions

1600. of love for who you are

  1601. and who you'll become,

  1602. full of stories

  1603. about how

  1604. that great grandparent

  1605. sacrificed for you?

  1606. If you found

  1607. something like that,

  1608. you would prize

  1609. every word.

  1610. And friends,

  1611. that's exactly

  1612. what we have

  1613. in Scripture.

  1614. The King of creation

  1615. has given us

  1616. these writings

1617. so that we might know

  1618. who we are

  1619. and whose we are

1620. and all that He's done

  1621. and will do

  1622. to bring His promises

  1623. to fulfillment.

  1624. I mean,

1625. how could we ever imagine

  1626. adding or taking away

1627. from such a precious gift?

  1628. No,

  1629. even when the words

  1630. of Scripture

  1631. are hard to understand,

  1632. even when we wrestle

  1633. to interpret,

  1634. we hold fast

  1635. to the whole Word,

1636. knowing that one day soon

1637. we will meet the author

  1638. face to face.

  1639. So what's last then?

  1640. As we live now

1641. in light of Jesus' coming soon,

  1642. we worship God alone,

  1643. we persevere

  1644. in Christ's likeness,

  1645. we hold fast

  1646. to the whole Word.

  1647. Finally,

  1648. we end with grace.

  1649. We end with grace.

  1650. The grace

  1651. of our Lord Jesus

  1652. be with all.

  1653. Amen.

  1654. Church,

  1655. may we keep

  1656. His grace

  1657. ever in our sights.

  1658. You know,

1659. in the midst of all

  1660. the rich symbols

  1661. of this book

  1662. that are so powerful,

  1663. dragons and beasts,

  1664. seals and trumpets,

  1665. the message

1666. at the end of the day

1667. is a message of grace.

  1668. There's nothing

  1669. we have done

  1670. to earn His love.

1671. And if you're in Christ,

  1672. there's nothing

1673. you can do to lose it.

  1674. We've been forgiven much,

  1675. so we persevere

1676. and we forgive in return.

  1677. He's laid down

  1678. His life for us,

  1679. so we willingly

  1680. lay down our lives

  1681. for Him,

  1682. knowing that to lose

  1683. our lives

  1684. is to find it.

  1685. It's all grace.

1686. The grace of the Lamb

  1687. who was slain

1688. and who will return soon

  1689. to redeem His beloved

  1690. and renew creation.

  1691. And by His grace,

  1692. church,

  1693. we will overcome.

  1694. Through external pressures

  1695. and persecution,

  1696. through internal conflicts

  1697. and compromise,

1698. His grace will be with us.

1699. But there's an even greater

  1700. future grace in store.

1701. We long for the Lord's return.

  1702. We pray,

  1703. come, Lord Jesus,

1704. because of grace to come.

  1705. Do you think

  1706. these last two chapters

  1707. of Revelation

  1708. that we've been studying

  1709. these last few weeks,

1710. do you think that they

  1711. exhaustively contain

  1712. everything God has

1713. in store for His people?

  1714. Streets of gold,

  1715. waters of life,

  1716. trees of life.

1717. Do you think that's it?

  1718. How could they?

  1719. How could they possibly

  1720. be it?

  1721. The infinite God

  1722. has yet more grace

1723. in store for His people.

1724. What no eye has seen

  1725. nor ear heard

1726. nor the heart of man imagined.

1727. That's what God has prepared

1728. for those who love Him.

  1729. So we pray,

  1730. come.

1731. The Spirit and the Bride

  1732. say, come.

1733. Let the one who hears

  1734. say, come.

  1735. And if you're thirsty,

  1736. come.

1737. Let the one who desires

1738. take the water of life

  1739. without price.

1740. There's grace here for all.

  1741. Come.

  1742. Let's pray.

  1743. Lord Jesus,

  1744. we pray

  1745. for You to come.

1746. Come in Your perfect timing.

  1747. Glorify Your name

1748. and bring all Your promises

  1749. to fulfillment.

  1750. And Lord,

  1751. in Your sovereignty

  1752. as You tarry,

1753. we pray that Your patience

  1754. would not be despised

  1755. by us.

1756. That as we look forward

  1757. to Your return eagerly,

  1758. we would be marked

  1759. by lives

  1760. of turning,

  1761. of repentance.

  1762. And Lord,

  1763. as You tarry,

1764. we pray that You would

1765. pour out Your Spirit afresh

1766. on those who do not know You.

  1767. Cause their eyes

  1768. to be opened.

  1769. Cause their hearts

  1770. to come alive

  1771. to see

  1772. that You are King,

  1773. that You are

  1774. the one true Savior,

  1775. and that the fullness

1776. of life is found in You.

  1777. Would they come

1778. to the water and drink,

1779. placing their trust in You?

  1780. And would they join

  1781. with the church

  1782. and with the Spirit

  1783. and say, come.

  1784. We pray this,

  1785. Father,

  1786. in Jesus' mighty name.

  1787. Amen.

  1788. Amen.

  1789. Amen.

  1790. Amen.

  1791. Amen.

  1792. Amen.
