  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see you all. Will you join me in prayer as we go to God's Word?

  2. O Lord, this morning we come to your Word.

  3. Lord, I pray this morning that we would tremble before it.

  4. Lord, your thoughts are not our thoughts and your ways are not our ways.

  5. Lord, how much we need to learn from you.

  6. O Lord, have mercy on us this morning.

  7. As we look into your Word, God, give us humble hearts.

  8. Lord, help us to submit to your Word.

  9. And by your Spirit, will you search our hearts to help us see if there be any wicked way in us.

  10. Lord, I pray that for me this morning.

  11. And Lord, I pray that the truth of your Word, by the power of your Spirit,

  12. would move us to know you more and to be like you.

  13. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  14. Amen.

  15. He's a chip off the old block, so the saying goes.

  16. Meaning, he's kind of like where he came from.

  17. Literally, this phrase comes from back in the 1600s,

  18. the idea that a chip off of a block of wood or stone would be made of the same substance

  19. and have the same character.

  20. And it is often used to describe a family resemblance.

  21. I have been told that my family has a strong family resemblance.

  22. You can see it in baby photos.

  23. If you look at my grandfather's baby photo and my brother's baby photo

  24. and my nephew's baby photos,

  25. they have remarkable similarities to them.

  26. My mom used to say that when we would call her on the phone,

  27. she would pick up the phone and we would say,

  28. Hi, Mom.

  29. And this was before cell phones and caller ID.

  30. So she would often have to say,

  31. Hello, it's good to hear from you.

  32. Now, which one are you?

  33. Because she didn't know.

  34. Because we sound alike.

  35. And rumor has it that though my brothers and I

  36. don't physically resemble each other that much,

  37. when the four of us together,

  38. everyone says,

  39. Oh, yeah, they're brothers.

  40. They sure are.

  41. The Bible has a similar language

  42. to describe this family resemblance,

  43. and it's the language of the son of.

  44. So in Matthew 8, verse 12,

    Matthew 8:12

  45. Jesus talks about sons of the kingdom,

  46. those who resemble the kingdom.

  47. In Matthew 9, 15,

  48. the ESV will use the words wedding guests

  49. to describe the sons of the wedding hall,

  50. which is a very interesting phrase.

  51. In Matthew 13, Jesus will talk about and contrast the sons of the kingdom

  52. and the sons of the evil one.

  53. And later in Matthew 23,

  54. he will say,

  55. The sons of those who killed the prophets.

  56. Now, let's just be clear.

  57. This is not a gendered term in the way it's being used.

  58. This is a resemblance term.

  59. This is sonship in the first century would be the characteristic family resemblance relationship.

  60. We can broaden it to just say children,

  61. but I want you to understand how the Bible communicates this idea of family resemblance.

  62. And it raises a question for us today.

  63. As the church of Jesus,

  64. whose son do we look like?

  65. Do we look like the son of Jesus?

  66. Or are we the chip off another block?

  67. Certainly in our world today,

  68. the public perception of the church

  69. is that we tend to be self-righteous,

  70. smug,

  71. judgmental,

  72. and maybe even more recently,

  73. angry,

  74. scary,

  75. violent,

  76. and intolerant.

  77. Is this the Jesus that we see in the Bible?

  78. And is this the kingdom that he proclaims?

  79. This is what brings us to our passage this morning.

  80. We're in the Beatitudes.

  81. That is Matthew 5,

  82. the first teaching section in the Gospel of Matthew,

  83. where Jesus is explaining and expounding on what he came to do,

  84. and particularly in this section,

  85. what kind of kingdom he has come to bring.

  86. And it's in contrast,

  87. in many ways,

  88. as we have seen over this series,

  89. contrast to what the expectations of the day were.

  90. And it's talking about present,

  91. inbreaking of the kingdom,

  92. and the future fullness of the kingdom

  93. that he will bring

  94. as the one who is bringing the kingdom of God.

  95. So, this is our passage.

  96. We're going to read Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:1–11

  97. verses 1 through 11.

  98. And I didn't get the page number.

  99. 740?

  100. 759?

  101. 759.

  102. There we go.

  103. Thank you for your help.

  104. 759 is where it is

  105. if you want to use the Pew Bible.

  106. Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  107. I'm going to read this whole section.

  108. We're going to be focusing on verse 9 today.

  109. So, Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  110. starting in verse 1.

  111. Seeing the crowds,

  112. he went up on the mountain,

  113. and when he sat down,

  114. his disciples came to him.

  115. And he, that is Jesus,

  116. opened his mouth

  117. and taught them,

  118. saying,

  119. Blessed are the poor in spirit,

  120. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  121. Blessed are those who mourn,

  122. for they shall be comforted.

  123. Blessed are the meek,

  124. for they shall inherit the earth.

  125. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst

  126. for righteousness,

  127. for they shall be satisfied.

  128. Blessed are the merciful,

  129. for they shall receive mercy.

  130. Blessed are the pure in heart,

  131. for they shall see God.

  132. Blessed are the peacemakers,

  133. for they shall be called sons of God.

  134. Blessed are those who are persecuted

  135. for righteousness' sake,

  136. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  137. Blessed are you,

  138. when all others revile you

  139. and persecute you

  140. and utter all kinds of evil

  141. against you falsely on my account.

  142. This is God's word.

  143. Blessed are the peacemakers,

  144. for they shall be called

  145. the sons of God.

  146. To live in God's kingdom

  147. is to be one who makes peace

  148. like our Father in heaven.

  149. So we're going to look at this

  150. in three steps this morning.

  151. First, we're going to look at

  152. the context of peacemaking.

  153. Secondly, we're going to look

  154. at the meaning of peacemaking.

  155. And finally, we're going to look

  156. at the power of God's peacemaking.

  157. So if you're taking notes,

  158. there's our outline for this morning.

  159. First, the context of peacemaking.

  160. If you remember in the first century,

  161. Israel was an occupied territory

  162. by an oppressive Roman empire.

  163. Now, the Romans wouldn't have

  164. thought of that.

  165. The Romans thought they were

  166. bringing them in to bless them

  167. and to help them be a part

  168. of a great civilization.

  169. But Israel probably didn't see it

  170. that way, did they?

  171. And particularly, there were those,

  172. the zealots in the first century,

  173. who were fomenting and working

  174. towards active military rebellion.

  175. And beyond all of this,

  176. there seemed to be this assumption

  177. that when God's Messiah would come,

  178. he would bring a military conquest

  179. to overthrow Roman rule

  180. and to establish the kingdom of heaven.

  181. And so there was,

  182. at least in certain circles at least,

  183. an expectation that the kingdom of heaven

  184. would come with war

  185. and with violence.

  186. Friends, it's not that hard

  187. to see that this is true today as well.

  188. Certainly, we see in the world

  189. there is much war and violence,

  190. whether it be in Gaza

  191. or in Ukraine

  192. or in Myanmar

  193. or South Sudan

  194. or other places.

  195. We live in a world

  196. that has much war and violence.

  197. Certainly, we see it in our politics.

  198. For heaven's sakes,

  199. a couple of weeks ago,

  200. we had an attempted assassination

  201. of one of the presidential candidates.

  202. We see it in our society.

  203. If you go to YouTube

  204. and type in road rage incidents,

  205. you will be there

  206. for the rest of your life

  207. watching YouTube videos

  208. about road rage

  209. and the way that it's happening

  210. being filmed by dash cams.

  211. We see it in our homes

  212. as we see domestic violence increase.

  213. And we see it even in our own hearts.

  214. James chapter 4 verse 1

    James 4:1

  215. has a very insightful statement.

  216. It says,

  217. what causes quarrels

  218. and what causes fights among you?

  219. Is it not this,

  220. that your passions

  221. are at war within you?

  222. You desire and do not have,

  223. so you murder.

  224. You covet and cannot obtain,

  225. so you fight and quarrel.

  226. You do not have

  227. because you do not ask

  228. and you do not…

  229. you ask and do not receive

  230. because you ask wrongly

  231. to spend it on your passions.

  232. Friends, peacemaking

  233. is such a need

  234. because our hearts

  235. are so sinful.

  236. We are driven by ego,

  237. selfishness, envy.

  238. We have a desire for power,

  239. possessions, prestige.

  240. We want to win.

  241. We want to get revenge.

  242. We want to punish.

  243. Sometimes we experience conflict

  244. because others come at us

  245. with these attitudes.

  246. Other times we initiate this

  247. with others.

  248. And in the midst of it,

  249. the question is,

  250. do we even…

  251. even when we are

  252. the recipients of this

  253. and not the initiators,

  254. do we respond

  255. with a spirit of peacemaking?

  256. These are the questions

  257. that rise up in our mind

  258. about what's the context

  259. of peacemaking?

  260. Is it out there in the world?

  261. Is it here?

  262. Is it in our hearts?

  263. Is it in our relationships?

  264. And I think the answer

  265. is probably all of the above.

  266. Interestingly,

  267. when you look through

  268. the New Testament,

  269. the concept of peace

  270. with regard to human relationships

  271. is most often applied

  272. to relationships

  273. within the church

  274. and with not easy subjects either.

  275. Think about how much conflict

  276. we have in our own churches

  277. about these topics

  278. that the Bible addresses.

  279. So in Ephesians 2,

  280. it talks about God

  281. bringing peace

  282. between ethnic divisions.

  283. In Romans 14,

  284. it talks about bringing peace

  285. into situations

  286. where people disagree theologically

  287. and in practice

  288. about how to deal with food

  289. offered to idols.

  290. In 1 Corinthians 14,

  291. it's how to bring peace

  292. into situations

  293. where spiritual gifts

  294. are getting out of control

  295. and people want it

  296. to be this way

  297. or that way

  298. and to lift themselves up

  299. and put others down.

  300. In 1 Thessalonians 5,

  301. peace comes from

  302. honoring leadership,

  303. those who are raised up

  304. to be servants among you.

  305. So we need to recognize

  306. that church,

  307. if we are going to think

  308. about being peacemakers,

  309. we need to start at home

  310. in our own church.

  311. And I'm thankful.

  312. I'm thankful for this church.

  313. We have certainly had seasons

  314. of conflict and difficulty.

  315. But I'm thankful

  316. for God's sustaining grace.

  317. And I pray that God

  318. will continue to help us

  319. with this.

  320. There are some other passages

  321. that talk about peacemaking,

  322. not just within the church,

  323. but more broadly

  324. as Christians in the world.

  325. So Romans 12

  326. is maybe the clearest one

  327. that we see

  328. where Paul encourages

  329. the church there,

  330. repay no one for evil,

  331. for evil,

  332. but give thought

  333. to do what is honorable

  334. in the sight of all.

  335. If possible,

  336. so far as it depends on you,

  337. live peaceably with all.

  338. Beloved,

  339. never avenge yourselves,

  340. but leave it to the wrath of God,

  341. for it is written,

  342. Vengeance is mine,

  343. I will repay,

  344. says the Lord.

  345. And to the contrary,

  346. if your enemy is hungry,

  347. feed him.

  348. If he is thirsty,

  349. give him something to drink,

  350. for by so doing,

  351. you will heap burning coals

  352. on his head.

  353. Do not overcome by evil,

  354. but overcome evil with good.

  355. So friends,

  356. in the broader world,

  357. this is our call.

  358. This is our call

  359. to entrust ultimate justification

  360. to God,

  361. ultimate vindication to God,

  362. and to do good

  363. and to seek peace with all

  364. as much as we are able.

  365. So this is the need

  366. and this is the call

  367. for peacemaking.

  368. But,

  369. you may be asking,

  370. what is it?

  371. What does it look like

  372. to be a peacemaker?

  373. Well,

  374. it's easy to understand,

  375. so I want to clarify

  376. a few things.

  377. One,

  378. being a peacemaker

  379. isn't seeking for inner peace

  380. in your own heart.

  381. Though it is true

  382. that knowing God

  383. brings peace in the world,

  384. this is not about

  385. your soul care

  386. and inner self.

  387. Peacemaking is about

  388. relationships,

  389. first and foremost,

  390. vertically with God

  391. and then secondarily,

  392. horizontally with others.

  393. In those contexts,

  394. then,

  395. secondly,

  396. it is not the absence

  397. of all conflict.

  398. I'm just going to make

  399. a few statements

  400. without defending them all

  401. because we'd be here

  402. all morning

  403. if I tried to,

  404. but I don't believe

  405. that this beatitude

  406. calls us to pacifism,

  407. where we would never,

  408. ever be involved

  409. in international war,

  410. serving in the military,

  411. or that sort of thing.

  412. I don't believe

  413. that Christians

  414. are excluded

  415. from those things.

  416. Though some may have

  417. that conviction

  418. and I want to honor them

  419. and give them

  420. the freedom of conscience

  421. in that,

  422. I don't believe

  423. it is the call

  424. for all believers

  425. in that.

  426. Secondly,

  427. we need to recognize

  428. that the Bible

  429. talks about conflict

  430. in the fact

  431. that we will always

  432. have a spiritual conflict

  433. because in Ephesians 6,

  434. there is a conflict

  435. in the spiritual realms

  436. between the enemy

  437. of our souls

  438. and those who serve him

  439. and us.

  440. And so there is

  441. spiritual warfare

  442. that is ongoing

  443. and we will always

  444. be involved in it

  445. until the end of the days.

  446. And if you want

  447. to know more about that,

  448. go back and listen

  449. to last year's sermons

  450. on Revelation

  451. and you'll get to see

  452. that in full force

  453. and we'll see all that.

  454. But thirdly,

  455. I want you to remember this.

  456. These words

  457. that Jesus spoke

  458. in Matthew 10,

  459. do not think

  460. that I have come

  461. to bring peace

  462. to the earth.

  463. I have not come

  464. to bring peace

  465. but a sword.

  466. I have come

  467. to set a man

  468. against his father

  469. and a daughter

  470. against her mother

  471. and a daughter-in-law

  472. against her mother-in-law

  473. and a person's enemies

  474. will be those

  475. of his own household.

  476. Whoever loves

  477. father and mother

  478. more than me

  479. is not worthy of me

  480. and whoever loves

  481. son or daughter

  482. more than me

  483. is not worthy of me

  484. and whoever does not

  485. take up his cross

  486. and follow me

  487. is not worthy of me.

  488. Whoever finds his life

  489. will lose it

  490. and whoever loses his life

  491. for my sake

  492. will find it.

  493. Now,

  494. what Jesus is really

  495. teaching here

  496. has to do

  497. with the wholehearted,

  498. singular worship

  499. of God

  500. above all others.

  501. and he is addressing

  502. what is a very human pattern

  503. where we love

  504. our family

  505. more than we would love God

  506. and we would seek

  507. to love God

  508. only in as much

  509. as it wouldn't provide

  510. conflict

  511. of loyalties

  512. and God

  513. and Jesus says

  514. that's not what it means

  515. to follow me.

  516. I am either Lord of all

  517. or I'm not Lord at all.

  518. Right?

  519. So that's what Jesus

  520. is saying here

  521. but recognize

  522. that he's acknowledging

  523. the coming of the gospel,

  524. the conflict

  525. of these values

  526. when God says

  527. you must worship me alone,

  528. when we live in a world

  529. that says worship

  530. all these other things,

  531. there's going to be conflicts

  532. because of those things.

  533. So we need to recognize

  534. that this will be true

  535. in our world.

  536. And yet in the midst of that,

  537. Jesus says

  538. blessed are the peacemakers.

  539. So knowing that

  540. these conflicts

  541. will happen inevitably

  542. if we are faithfully

  543. following the Lord,

  544. how do we then live

  545. as peacemakers

  546. in the middle

  547. of those contexts?

  548. And again,

  549. there is so much

  550. we could say

  551. on public discourse

  552. and I'm going to say

  553. very little about it.

  554. I'm going to focus more

  555. on relationships

  556. and interpersonal conflict

  557. just so you know.

  558. So what does it look like

  559. if it's not those things?

  560. Well, passively,

  561. peacemaking is not being quarrelsome

  562. or easily provoked.

  563. Proverbs 19.11 says,

  564. good sense makes one slow to anger

  565. and it is his glory

  566. to overlook offense.

  567. Colossians 3.12 and 13 say,

  568. put on then as God's chosen one,

  569. holy and beloved,

  570. compassionate hearts,

  571. kindness, humility,

  572. meekness, and patience,

  573. bearing with one another

  574. and if one has a complaint

  575. against another,

  576. forgiving one another.

  577. As the Lord has forgiven you,

  578. so you must also forgive.

  579. Have you ever met someone

  580. who always seems to be

  581. spoiling for a fight?

  582. They're always looking

  583. for the thing to disagree about.

  584. They're always looking

  585. for the ideal

  586. that's being fallen short of

  587. so that we can be critical

  588. of others.

  589. They're often sensitive,

  590. easily offended,

  591. and quick to anger.

  592. Often they're insecure

  593. and they're attacking

  594. as a way of building someone up.

  595. The peacemaker is the opposite

  596. of these things.

  597. They will look for common ground

  598. even in the midst of conflict.

  599. They will extend grace

  600. and overlook offense

  601. where possible.

  602. They're grounded

  603. and able to endure slights

  604. because they know

  605. their identities in Christ.

  606. So this is the passivity

  607. of not being quarrelsome

  608. or easily provoked.

  609. It doesn't mean

  610. that they won't ever

  611. stand up for right.

  612. It doesn't ever mean

  613. that they would address

  614. wrongdoing or conflict,

  615. but still doing those things

  616. with a peaceable heart

  617. and a peacemaking heart.

  618. Remember that this beatitude

  619. is not in isolation,

  620. that this beatitude

  621. is one of many,

  622. that we are to be those

  623. who hunger and thirst

  624. for righteousness

  625. and do so with meekness

  626. and with mourning

  627. and with a purity of heart

  628. and with…

  629. Which one did I forget?

  630. That's all I can remember.

  631. So off the top of my head.

  632. That it's all of these

  633. characteristics together

  634. that characterize

  635. the kingdom of God.

  636. So actively,

  637. what does it look like

  638. to seek reconciliation,

  639. particularly in

  640. interpersonal conflict?

  641. These are passages

  642. you've probably heard.

  643. Matthew 5, verse 23,

    Matthew 5:23

  644. Jesus says,

  645. So if you are offering

  646. your gift at the altar,

  647. but remember that

  648. your brother has something

  649. against you,

  650. leave your gift there

  651. before the altar

  652. and go.

  653. First be reconciled

  654. to your brother,

  655. and then come

  656. and offer up your gift.

  657. And then Matthew 18, 15,

  658. says,

  659. If your brother sins against you,

  660. go and tell him his fault

  661. between you and him alone,

  662. and if he listens to you,

  663. you have gained a brother.

  664. So in both of these,

  665. whether you know someone

  666. has something against you

  667. or whether you have

  668. something against someone,

  669. the Bible calls us

  670. as peacemakers

  671. to address these situations.

  672. What does it look like?

  673. Well, friends,

  674. we could do seminars on this.

  675. I'm going to point you

  676. to a book

  677. and a website,

  678. Peacemakers by Ken Sandy.

  679. This is a great

  680. biblically informed book

  681. to help think through

  682. how do we address conflict.

  683. They have a website

  684. that's Relational Wisdom 360

  685. that's connected

  686. to the peacemakers

  687. that you can find easily

  688. through a Google search

  689. that has lots of practical wisdom

  690. and advice

  691. about how to go about

  692. addressing personal conflict

  693. in a helpful way.

  694. I'm going to give you

  695. four quick to-dos,

  696. so to speak,

  697. on what it looks like

  698. to be a peacemaker.

  699. And these come pretty much

  700. straight from the website

  701. and from the book.

  702. So the four G's

  703. of reconciliation,

  704. the first one

  705. is to glorify God.

  706. As Christian,

  707. when we seek reconciliation,

  708. our first view

  709. is to God Himself,

  710. not to the other person.

  711. And what that means is

  712. we go looking at Him

  713. and seeking to please Him.

  714. Peacemaking is not seeking

  715. to please other people

  716. just to please other people.

  717. And some of us like that

  718. and we want to be people pleasers,

  719. and so that's what

  720. we're tempted to do.

  721. Some of us don't care

  722. about it at all

  723. and we want to be

  724. more antagonistic

  725. towards others.

  726. And both of these attitudes

  727. disappear before

  728. the throne of God.

  729. And we go and we pray

  730. that God would be at work

  731. in our hearts

  732. and in the hearts of the other

  733. and that He would help us.

  734. It allows us,

  735. as we seek God,

  736. to trust Him,

  737. to feel like we don't need

  738. to win because we can believe

  739. that He will make it clear.

  740. We will let His love

  741. and grace fill us

  742. as we go to the other person.

  743. The second step,

  744. the second G,

  745. the first one is glorify God.

  746. The second one is

  747. get the log out of your own eye.

  748. You guys know Jesus said this

  749. in He said,

  750. before you go to a brother

  751. and try and take a speck

  752. out of his eye,

  753. you have to get the log

  754. out of your own eye.

  755. We need to ask ourselves

  756. the question,

  757. have we been critical?

  758. Have we had a negative

  759. or overly sensitive attitude

  760. towards the other

  761. that has caused

  762. unnecessary conflict?

  763. Have we actually sinned

  764. against the other person

  765. in word or in action?

  766. And friends, listen,

  767. we often don't see it.

  768. We have blind spots.

  769. That's a part of our sin nature

  770. is we like to justify ourselves

  771. and so it's hard to see

  772. when we sin.

  773. But hopefully,

  774. we are connected

  775. with other brothers and sisters

  776. that we can ask for their input

  777. and say,

  778. this is what I've done.

  779. What do you see?

  780. What do you think I've done?

  781. Ask for help

  782. so that you can get this log

  783. out of your own eye

  784. so you can take

  785. an objective look at yourself

  786. and face up

  787. to your contribution

  788. to a conflict.

  789. The third G

  790. is to gently restore

  791. the brother.

  792. Galatians 6.1

  793. says,

  794. Brothers,

  795. if anyone is caught

  796. in transgression,

  797. any transgression,

  798. you who are spiritual

  799. should restore him

  800. in a spirit of gentleness.

  801. Keep watch on yourself

  802. lest you too be tempted.

  803. How often does conflict

  804. come about

  805. because our desire

  806. is to judge

  807. rather than to restore?

  808. And again,

  809. it's not that we don't

  810. have discernment,

  811. but when we see

  812. with eyes of discernment

  813. sin that needs to be addressed,

  814. our heart in going in it

  815. is to bring restoration,

  816. to bring reconciliation,

  817. and to look at your own heart

  818. to make sure

  819. you aren't doing this

  820. for yourself

  821. but for the good

  822. of the other person.

  823. We're not just

  824. confronting people

  825. to give them a list

  826. of their wrongs.

  827. we're bringing

  828. something to them

  829. so that there might

  830. be a restoration

  831. of relationship

  832. and of fellowship.

  833. Our attitude

  834. should be one

  835. of gentleness

  836. rather than anger

  837. and our purpose

  838. should be restoration

  839. rather than condemnation.

  840. And then the fourth one

  841. is go

  842. and be reconciled.

  843. One of the most

  844. unique features

  845. of biblical peacemaking

  846. is the pursuit

  847. of genuine forgiveness

  848. and reconciliation,

  849. writes Sandy.

  850. It means taking

  851. the initiative.

  852. It means starting

  853. the conversation.

  854. It means broaching

  855. the awkwardness.

  856. Go and be reconciled.

  857. Now,

  858. it's important to say

  859. not all relationships

  860. can be reconciled.

  861. There are times

  862. when in a fallen world

  863. we can work

  864. really hard

  865. to do it

  866. and still not come

  867. to a good place.

  868. Paul and Barnabas

  869. came to a place

  870. like this

  871. in Acts,

  872. I don't remember,

  873. 13,

  874. about John Mark

  875. and whether they were

  876. going to take him

  877. with him or not.

  878. Friends,

  879. this should be

  880. an opportunity

  881. for us to grieve

  882. the fallenness

  883. and to recognize

  884. that we never

  885. give up

  886. on hoping for

  887. and longing

  888. for reconciliation

  889. and for longing

  890. for peace.

  891. We always want

  892. that to happen

  893. but there are times

  894. when the Romans 12

  895. passage that we read

  896. earlier comes to mind.

  897. As much as you are able

  898. or as much as you,

  899. as have you done

  900. everything you can do

  901. to bring peace,

  902. do this.

  903. So this is a basic

  904. outline.

  905. I want to take it

  906. one step further

  907. in peacemaking

  908. because

  909. further on

  910. in the Beatitudes

  911. Jesus says this.

  912. He says,

  913. you have heard it said

  914. you shall love your neighbor

  915. and hate your enemy

  916. but I tell you

  917. love your enemies

  918. and pray for those

  919. who persecute you

  920. so that you may be

  921. sons of your father

  922. who is in heaven

  923. for he makes his son

  924. rise on the evil

  925. and on the good

  926. and sends rain

  927. on the just

  928. and on the unjust.

  929. Friends,

  930. peacemaking extends

  931. even to our enemies

  932. and we don't always

  933. make enemies

  934. our friends.

  935. We can't always

  936. change their perspective

  937. or their motives

  938. or their actions

  939. but we must have

  940. the peace,

  941. the heart of a peacemaker

  942. even as we address

  943. those who hate us

  944. and revile us.

  945. We'll see this next week

  946. in the last Beatitude

  947. about those who hate

  948. and persecute

  949. and revile Christians

  950. because they follow Jesus.

  951. Even in that

  952. we are called

  953. to be peacemakers.

  954. And I hope you see

  955. through this

  956. simple

  957. and it's not

  958. it is simple

  959. it's a simple

  960. outline for a very

  961. complex situation

  962. emotionally

  963. and relationally

  964. but it's a start

  965. for us

  966. to think about

  967. am I a peacemaker

  968. following these things?

  969. And I hope you see

  970. clearly that

  971. peacemaking

  972. is not

  973. for weak people.

  974. Peacemaking

  975. is really hard.

  976. It is costly

  977. and it requires

  978. a strength.

  979. it requires

  980. self-examination.

  981. It requires

  982. courageous initiative.

  983. It means

  984. seeking to understand

  985. before being understood.

  986. It will cost us

  987. thought

  988. and time

  989. and the energy

  990. of our heart

  991. and it will cause us

  992. call us to humility

  993. to die to self

  994. and to put

  995. others first.

  996. It is a high calling.

  997. And friends

  998. we don't

  999. always

  1000. do it

  1001. perfectly.

  1002. I certainly

  1003. know that I

  1004. haven't always

  1005. in this church

  1006. but by God's

  1007. grace

  1008. may it be so

  1009. more and more.

  1010. Many of you

  1011. may be thinking

  1012. of the prayer

  1013. written by

  1014. Francis Assisi

  1015. long ago.

  1016. I know we're

  1017. going long

  1018. but I do want

  1019. to read this

  1020. because I think

  1021. it will be

  1022. helpful for us

  1023. that this would

  1024. be the prayer

  1025. that we would

  1026. pray as well.

  1027. Lord

  1028. make me an

  1029. instrument of

  1030. your peace

  1031. where there is

  1032. hatred

  1033. let me sow

  1034. love

  1035. where there is

  1036. injury

  1037. pardon

  1038. where there is

  1039. doubt

  1040. faith

  1041. where there is

  1042. despair

  1043. hope

  1044. where there is

  1045. darkness

  1046. light

  1047. where there is

  1048. sadness

  1049. joy

  1050. oh divine

  1051. master grant

  1052. that I may

  1053. not so much

  1054. seek to be

  1055. consoled

  1056. as to

  1057. console

  1058. to be

  1059. understood

  1060. as to

  1061. understand

  1062. to be

  1063. loved

  1064. as to

  1065. love

  1066. for it is

  1067. in giving

  1068. that we

  1069. receive

  1070. it is in

  1071. pardoning

  1072. that we

  1073. are pardoned

  1074. and it is

  1075. in dying

  1076. that we

  1077. are born

  1078. to eternal

  1079. life.

  1080. Friends

  1081. this is the

  1082. power then

  1083. finally

  1084. of God's

  1085. peacemaking

  1086. work

  1087. Francis of Assisi

  1088. gets it

  1089. this last

  1090. verse of his

  1091. prayer

  1092. prayer

  1093. is in

  1094. dying

  1095. that we

  1096. are born

  1097. to eternal

  1098. life

  1099. how do we

  1100. know that

  1101. because this

  1102. is what God

  1103. has done

  1104. for us

  1105. Colossians 1

    Colossians 1:19

  1106. verse 19

  1107. says this

  1108. for in him

  1109. that is in

  1110. Christ

  1111. in Christ

  1112. all the

  1113. fullness of

  1114. God was

  1115. pleased to

  1116. dwell

  1117. and through

  1118. him to

  1119. reconcile

  1120. to himself

  1121. all things

  1122. whether on

  1123. earth or in

  1124. heaven making

  1125. peace by the

  1126. blood of

  1127. his cross

  1128. and you

  1129. who were

  1130. once alienated

  1131. and hostile

  1132. in mind

  1133. doing evil

  1134. deeds

  1135. he has now

  1136. reconciled

  1137. in his

  1138. body of

  1139. flesh

  1140. by his

  1141. death

  1142. in order

  1143. to present

  1144. you holy

  1145. and blameless

  1146. and above

  1147. reproach

  1148. before him

  1149. if indeed

  1150. you continue

  1151. in the faith

  1152. stable and

  1153. steadfast

  1154. not shifting

  1155. from the

  1156. hope of the

  1157. gospel that

  1158. you heard

  1159. which has

  1160. been proclaimed

  1161. in all

  1162. creation

  1163. under heaven

  1164. and of

  1165. which I

  1166. Paul became

  1167. a minister

  1168. God came

  1169. to us

  1170. in Christ

  1171. and Christ

  1172. came and

  1173. laid down

  1174. his life

  1175. for us

  1176. and shed

  1177. his blood

  1178. for us

  1179. to make

  1180. peace

  1181. between us

  1182. and God

  1183. for we

  1184. in our sin

  1185. are full

  1186. of ego

  1187. pride

  1188. insecurity

  1189. greed

  1190. and envy

  1191. but God

  1192. comes to

  1193. free us

  1194. from these

  1195. things

  1196. in Jesus

  1197. incarnation

  1198. we see

  1199. God's

  1200. initiation

  1201. towards us

  1202. even when

  1203. we were

  1204. enemies

  1205. in the

  1206. shed blood

  1207. of Christ

  1208. we see

  1209. the way

  1210. that God

  1211. can offer

  1212. us the

  1213. forgiveness

  1214. of sin

  1215. by bearing

  1216. the penalty

  1217. for our

  1218. sin

  1219. by his

  1220. death

  1221. we see

  1222. his love

  1223. for us

  1224. and by his

  1225. resurrection

  1226. we see

  1227. the new

  1228. life

  1229. that he

  1230. gives us

  1231. the new

  1232. heart

  1233. and the

  1234. new

  1235. spirit

  1236. where we

  1237. who were

  1238. once enemies

  1239. are now

  1240. welcomed as

  1241. family

  1242. and we

  1243. who are

  1244. far off

  1245. have been

  1246. brought

  1247. near in

  1248. Christ

  1249. and in

  1250. this new

  1251. heart

  1252. and new

  1253. spirit

  1254. in this

  1255. new life

  1256. we have

  1257. we are

  1258. able to

  1259. be in

  1260. increasing

  1261. measure

  1262. more and

  1263. more like

  1264. him

  1265. making

  1266. peace

  1267. for the

  1268. gospel that

  1269. we proclaim

  1270. is a

  1271. gospel

  1272. of peace

  1273. peace with

  1274. God

  1275. first and

  1276. foremost

  1277. and then

  1278. as peacemakers

  1279. in this

  1280. world

  1281. and friends

  1282. when we

  1283. are like

  1284. this

  1285. we are

  1286. called

  1287. chips off

  1288. the old

  1289. block

  1290. sons

  1291. of God

  1292. the God

  1293. who is

  1294. the one

  1295. who made

  1296. peace

  1297. blessed are

  1298. the peacemakers

  1299. for they

  1300. shall be

  1301. called

  1302. sons of

  1303. God

  1304. let's

  1305. pray

  1306. Lord

  1307. Jesus

  1308. we thank

  1309. you

  1310. for this

  1311. word

  1312. Lord

  1313. it is

  1314. searching

  1315. if we

  1316. are

  1317. honest

  1318. Lord

  1319. we pray

  1320. that you

  1321. would allow

  1322. it to

  1323. search

  1324. our

  1325. hearts

  1326. today

  1327. Lord

  1328. if there

  1329. are places

  1330. where we

  1331. need to

  1332. go

  1333. and

  1334. initiate

  1335. reconciliation

  1336. Lord

  1337. will you

  1338. show us

  1339. these

  1340. things

  1341. Lord

  1342. if there

  1343. are any

  1344. here this

  1345. morning

  1346. who don't

  1347. know peace

  1348. with you

  1349. who haven't

  1350. put their

  1351. faith in

  1352. Christ

  1353. I pray

  1354. this morning

  1355. that they

  1356. would know

  1357. that Jesus

  1358. your blood

  1359. is enough

  1360. and your

  1361. death

  1362. is enough

  1363. that by

  1364. trusting in

  1365. you

  1366. Lord

  1367. they can

  1368. have forgiveness

  1369. of sin

  1370. and eternal

  1371. life

  1372. and Lord

  1373. I pray

  1374. that as we

  1375. go from

  1376. here

  1377. in our

  1378. homes

  1379. and our

  1380. workplaces

  1381. Lord

  1382. will you

  1383. make us

  1384. peacemakers

  1385. that others

  1386. might see

  1387. a little

  1388. bit

  1389. of what

  1390. kind of

  1391. God

  1392. you are

  1393. we pray

  1394. this in

  1395. Jesus name

  1396. Amen
