  1. Good morning. There we go. User error. Sorry about that. It's good to see you all here this morning

  2. as we gather together on the Lord's Day to worship Him. It's a little hot and muggy.

  3. I do want to remind you, if you are feeling overwhelmed, there is a meeting room downstairs

  4. that has the service live streamed and has air conditioning. So if you need that, don't feel any shame in getting up and moving down there.

  5. The delay is probably enough that if you move quickly, you won't miss anything at all.

  6. So salt has many uses. I put it on my broccoli and my chicken to bring out its flavor or on my caramel chocolate ice cream sundae

  7. to make it salted caramel chocolate, which is really yummy, right?

  8. Some of us might use salt to throw over our shoulders for good luck.

  9. Many of us eat food that is salted for preservation.

  10. In the winter, if it snows, we throw it on our paths to melt ice, or at least we used to before they created those chemical pellets that work better.

  11. But it's one of the uses.

  12. It can be used to kill weeds in your garden or on your path when they're growing up between the bricks.

  13. Salt has many uses.

  14. In the ancient world, salt was so precious that it was actually used as a form of currency.

  15. And so the phrase that we have in English today,

  16. he's not worth his salt, actually comes from the fact that he's not worth what we're paying him.

  17. Because salt was used to pay workers at times.

  18. Why am I talking about salt?

  19. Well, because Jesus talked about salt.

  20. In our passage this morning, if you've been here for the summer,

  21. you know we've been preaching through the Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  22. And if you want to turn there now, it's page 759 in your pew Bible.

  23. We've been going slowly through the first 12 verses, verse by verse.

  24. The Beatitudes, as we explored what it meant to live in the kingdom of God,

  25. and what it would look like in our personal character.

  26. And as we transition into the fall, we're going to keep going.

  27. We're going to do the rest of the Sermon on the Mount through the end of chapter 7.

  28. Again, it will probably extend beyond Christmas.

  29. We're not going to take it one verse at a time exactly, although today we are.

  30. But typically, we're going to let Jesus' words break up our passage from one topic to the next.

  31. So the passages will get a little bit longer as we go.

  32. And again, if you're new here and you have,

  33. what is God doing or what is Jesus doing in this sermon?

  34. Well, if you go back to chapter 4, Matthew says this,

  35. and he, that is Jesus, went throughout all Galilee,

  36. teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom

  37. and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.

  38. So it said, Matthew says, Jesus is going around preaching and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom.

  39. And what we then have is a teaching section that helps fill in what is it that he was teaching.

  40. He was teaching about the nature of God's kingdom.

  41. That is, what does it look like when God rules and reigns,

  42. whether it's in a person's heart or in a society or a community,

  43. what does it look like for God's kingdom to come?

  44. And this is really good news that he's preaching.

  45. It's a gospel that is good news of the question.

  46. The question I want us to be asking as we go through this passage all fall is,

  47. how is it that God calls us to live distinctively as Christians in God's kingdom?

  48. What are the ways that he wants us to understand and live distinct from the kingdoms of this world

  49. and the worldviews of this world?

  50. How is it that he calls us to be set apart, distinct in the way that we live?

  51. And so this brings us to chapter 5, verse 13, which will be our passage today on salt.

  52. But I'm just going to read the context.

  53. So I'm going to start in verse 2 of chapter 5 for our reading.

  54. So let me read through this, and then after I pray, we'll take a look particularly at verse 13.

  55. So let's read God's word.

  56. As he opened his mouth and taught them, and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

  57. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  58. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  59. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  60. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  61. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  62. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  63. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  64. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  65. Blessed are you.

  66. Blessed are you.

  67. When others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account,

  68. rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  69. You are the salt of the earth.

  70. But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?

  71. It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

  72. You are the light of the world.

  73. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

  74. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand,

  75. and it gives light to all in the house.

  76. In the same way, let your light shine before others,

  77. so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

  78. So this is God's Word.

  79. Let's pray for His help as we look at it today.

  80. Lord, help us this morning.

  81. Lord, I pray for Your help, that You would help me to speak as I ought with clarity,

  82. and Lord, with truth.

  83. Spirit, help me this morning,

  84. and help us as a congregation to sit under Your Word,

  85. to receive this Word,

  86. to allow Your Spirit to work it into our hearts and into our lives.

  87. Lord, use this Word this morning

  88. so that we might love You more,

  89. so that we might obey You more,

  90. so that we might know You more.

  91. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  92. Amen.

  93. So in some ways, verse 13 is very straightforward.

  94. It's a very simple image.

  95. It's a very straightforward idea.

  96. But I think there's a lot of richness to it.

  97. So we're going to try to tease out some of the implications and meanings of it this morning.

  98. We're going to ask three questions of the text.

  99. The first is, what does it mean that we are the salt of the earth?

  100. The second one is, why does Jesus warn us about losing our distinctive saltiness?

  101. And the third question is,

  102. how does the gospel shape and fuel that distinctive saltiness?

  103. So, what does it mean?

  104. Why does He warn us?

  105. And how does the gospel interact with this idea of distinctive saltiness?

  106. So, that's our question.

  107. The first one then,

  108. what does it mean that we are the salt of the earth?

  109. Jesus, in this context, has gathered His disciples,

  110. and His crowd is listening,

  111. and He looks at them and He says,

  112. you are the salt of the earth.

  113. Now, this is a metaphor, right?

  114. But what does it point to?

  115. Now, biblically, if we teased out salt in the way it's used in other places,

  116. it's used sometimes for, as an image of destruction or judgment.

  117. Sometimes it's used, particularly in the Old Testament temple,

  118. as purification,

  119. as it was a part of offering in the temple.

  120. Certainly, preservation is one of the ways that we see it used as well.

  121. But the fourth one is the one that I actually think is most in view in this passage today,

  122. and that is flavor.

  123. Now, flavor feels kind of weak,

  124. but I think it's actually the idea,

  125. and one of the reasons I think that is because of the second half of the verse, right?

  126. You are the salt of the earth,

  127. but if the salt has lost its taste,

  128. its other versions,

  129. loses its saltiness,

  130. lost its flavor in the New King James,

  131. has become tasteless in the New American Standard.

  132. So, this idea is pretty,

  133. and it's a really interesting word.

  134. Sorry, word nerdery for a little bit.

  135. When you look at this in its original,

  136. what it actually says is,

  137. it has become foolish.

  138. If your salt has become foolish,

  139. which clearly was an idiom in the day,

  140. but I think the idea is,

  141. and one of the ideas is that rabbis often used salt as an image for wisdom,

  142. and so Jesus is making a really cool play on words here.

  143. But what he's saying is that if we lose our essential nature,

  144. becoming foolish is somehow being separate from who we were,

  145. who we are meant to be biblically, right?

  146. So, this idea of flavor,

  147. we are meant to have the flavor of God and His kingdom in our lives.

  148. This is what it means that we are meant to be the salt of the earth,

  149. that you and I bring as followers of Jesus,

  150. a distinctive taste of God's kingdom to the world that we live in.

  151. And it's a flavor, it's an aroma,

  152. it's a taste of something better,

  153. of a kingdom that, as C.S. Lewis says,

  154. a kingdom we've never been to,

  155. a music that we've never quite heard,

  156. a story that we're meant to bring this flavor to the world

  157. that is enticing, that is inviting,

  158. that at times may be challenging or confronting to the world,

  159. but we're meant to bring the flavor of the kingdom of God.

  160. But you may ask,

  161. okay, that sounds nice.

  162. Well, what does that mean?

  163. Well, starting with,

  164. it means we live out the Beatitudes.

  165. In the context, this comes right after Jesus has just said,

  166. this is what it looks like to live in the kingdom of God, right?

  167. Poor in spirit,

  168. mourning,

  169. meek,

  170. hungering and thirsting for righteousness,

  171. merciful,

  172. pure in heart,

  173. peacemaking,

  174. persecuted for righteousness' sake.

  175. If we want to think through,

  176. what does it mean to be the salt of the earth?

  177. Let's start here.

  178. We look at this and we think,

  179. when we live in the kingdom of God,

  180. when God rules and reigns in our hearts,

  181. these things are characteristic,

  182. or should be characteristic,

  183. of us.

  184. When we live this way,

  185. it allows us to be the salt we are meant to be.

  186. And we'll see that this doesn't just look backwards in the Sermon on the Mount

  187. to say saltiness looks like this.

  188. Looking ahead to the rest of the Sermon on the Mount,

  189. I'm not going to preach the whole thing today,

  190. but what is it?

  191. It means that we have a morality that is heart-centered

  192. and not merely skin deep.

  193. It means we have a heart of costly service

  194. and humility before others.

  195. It means we have a single-minded devotion

  196. to God who is the King of our kingdom.

  197. And it means we have a radical devotion to Jesus

  198. and following Him

  199. in sacrificial love for those around us.

  200. We'll see all of those themes played out

  201. in the rest of the Sermon on the Mount.

  202. So Jesus gives us these character qualities.

  203. And listen, if you're not sure what that looked like,

  204. put Trinity on your podcast list

  205. and listen to the sermons from earlier this summer.

  206. And then keep coming back.

  207. And throughout the rest of the fall,

  208. we'll get a picture fuller and fuller

  209. of what it means to have this salt.

  210. I do want to make sure I say this too.

  211. Like when we talk about having a flavor or aroma,

  212. we always think of this as a positive thing typically.

  213. Oh, I love the taste of fresh-cooked bread

  214. when we make bread at home.

  215. You know, I love that aroma.

  216. But we need to recognize that the aroma

  217. isn't always pleasant to everyone, right?

  218. Verses 10 through 12, right before this,

  219. have told us that when we pursue righteousness,

  220. that is right living in the kingdom of God,

  221. at times we will get persecution and rejection for it.

  222. It will provoke reviling and hatred

  223. from those who hate God and who despise His kingdom.

  224. All right, so that's still conceptual.

  225. You're still saying, okay, Matt, what does this look like?

  226. I could, we could be here all day

  227. with me trying to paint a portrait.

  228. But let me give you a few ideas.

  229. When I was in high school, before I was a Christian,

  230. there were a couple of my friends in high school

  231. who were Christians.

  232. And I knew that they went to some meeting somewhere

  233. on Wednesday nights and it was exciting

  234. and I didn't want to go.

  235. But they went.

  236. But what I saw in my relationships

  237. is that they were faithful

  238. and they were trustworthy

  239. and they were humble

  240. and they were joyful

  241. and they were grounded in a way that I wasn't.

  242. And they talked about Jesus

  243. being the source of all their lives.

  244. And they weren't perfect

  245. and they made mistakes

  246. and all sorts of things.

  247. But there was a picture there.

  248. I experienced in my interactions with them

  249. something.

  250. And I thought, whatever it is,

  251. I can taste something that I want more of.

  252. It was part of how God brought me to Christ.

  253. And I think they were living out the verse

  254. that we looked at earlier in Colossians

  255. where they were ready to pray for an open door

  256. to share about their faith

  257. and then that they were going to live their lives

  258. with their speech seasoned with salt

  259. that is seasoned with the flavor of the gospel.

  260. Even if it's not the whole gospel told all at once,

  261. they could plant seeds

  262. and give invitations for people to talk more

  263. about what's most meaningful

  264. and what do we do when we fail

  265. and where is there forgiveness

  266. and what does it mean to love

  267. and all these things lead us to the gospel.

  268. And that's what happened to me.

  269. So that's one kind of saltiness

  270. that I've experienced in the world.

  271. There are also people

  272. who are doing salty things in their workplace.

  273. Some of you remember Lydia Dugdale

  274. who was a member here for a while

  275. who's now a professor down at Columbia.

  276. She's written a book called

  277. The Lost Art of Dying.

  278. And it's a beautiful book

  279. that's engaging with the question

  280. of how do we as a culture

  281. think about dying

  282. from a Christian perspective.

  283. And some of you are academics in here.

  284. Some of you are scholars.

  285. Some of you are going to go on

  286. and have opportunities to write books

  287. and to teach others.

  288. How can you bring your Christian worldview

  289. and integrate it into your subjects

  290. so that you can bring a saltiness

  291. to your job

  292. and to your thinking

  293. and to your worldview?

  294. Sometimes saltiness

  295. simply means faithfulness

  296. to obey God

  297. in unusual,

  298. in circumstances

  299. where everyone else

  300. is doing something different.

  301. I remember working in campus ministry

  302. and I discipled a guy

  303. who was on the lacrosse team.

  304. And if you don't know anything

  305. about lacrosse teams,

  306. they're not always

  307. the most savory guys on campus.

  308. Or maybe they're super savory

  309. in all the ways

  310. you don't want them to be.

  311. They can be a bit rough and tumble

  312. and a bit of the party crowd.

  313. And he had a girlfriend

  314. who really wanted to sleep with him.

  315. And he kept saying,

  316. no, I don't feel like that's right.

  317. That's not what God wants me to do.

  318. And he kept saying no.

  319. And the grief that he got

  320. from his teammates on this,

  321. like they would make bets every week,

  322. like maybe this is the weekend,

  323. he's going to not do it.

  324. And he didn't do it

  325. by condemning them

  326. or telling them

  327. they're all terrible people.

  328. He didn't do it

  329. by separating himself out

  330. and saying,

  331. if you're going to be like that,

  332. I'm not going to be part of this team.

  333. But he just humbly,

  334. steadfastly lived out a calling

  335. to follow Jesus

  336. in that particular way.

  337. There are lots of other ways

  338. this might look.

  339. Think about the value of hospitality.

  340. We're actually going to do

  341. a Sunday school on it

  342. later this fall.

  343. Hospitality is a lost art

  344. in our culture today.

  345. People are moving fast

  346. and they think of their home

  347. as a private space

  348. and you don't invite people in

  349. and it's weird

  350. to go to each other's houses.

  351. But Christian hospitality

  352. is such a beautiful way

  353. of connecting

  354. and loving people.

  355. How do we be salty

  356. by inviting our neighbors,

  357. our friends,

  358. our co-workers,

  359. our classmates

  360. into our homes,

  361. into our worlds?

  362. William Wilberforce

  363. is another example

  364. who spent his whole lifetime

  365. in politics.

  366. 53 years in total.

  367. No, actually,

  368. 45 years in politics.

  369. 27 of them

  370. to get to the point

  371. where his bill

  372. to abolish slavery

  373. actually passed.

  374. Let me rephrase that.

  375. To abolish the slave trade

  376. in England passed.

  377. And then another

  378. 26 years,

  379. if my math is right,

  380. before Britain

  381. actually outlawed slavery

  382. in the country.

  383. he spent his whole life

  384. being salt

  385. in trying to change

  386. the societal values

  387. through the laws

  388. of the land,

  389. bringing the hope

  390. and the light

  391. of the kingdom

  392. to the British Empire.

  393. And again,

  394. many of us live

  395. mundane lives

  396. and we may not

  397. change the world.

  398. Some of you might.

  399. Some of you might go on

  400. to have those opportunities.

  401. Will you maintain

  402. your saltiness?

  403. So I hope

  404. that's a little bit

  405. of a picture.

  406. And our saltiness

  407. can be in all sorts

  408. of things.

  409. How we parent

  410. and how we care

  411. for our aging parents.

  412. How we engage

  413. in political discourse

  414. with one another.

  415. How we engage

  416. with the PTA

  417. in our school district.

  418. How we deal

  419. with gossip

  420. in our workplace.

  421. How we love

  422. our elderly neighbors

  423. and single parents

  424. among us.

  425. And so on and so on.

  426. I could continue

  427. to lay out

  428. different contexts

  429. and different ways

  430. in which we need

  431. to think about

  432. how are we being

  433. distinctively Christian,

  434. which means we need

  435. to study God's Word,

  436. think about how it applies

  437. to all of these contexts,

  438. and then living

  439. faithfully in that.

  440. Being a foretaste

  441. of the kingdom of God.

  442. And people will see it

  443. and they'll know it.

  444. John has a great

  445. bunch of friends

  446. that he knows

  447. at the gym.

  448. And they have

  449. great conversations

  450. with him

  451. because they taste

  452. the kingdom of God

  453. in him,

  454. I believe.

  455. And they see something

  456. in the way

  457. that he loves them

  458. and listens to them

  459. and engages

  460. with their questions

  461. that they're hungry for

  462. and they want more.

  463. And they don't even

  464. necessarily know

  465. they want God.

  466. They might,

  467. but they're there.

  468. Jesus says,

  469. you are the salt

  470. of the earth.

  471. This is definitional.

  472. If you are in God's kingdom,

  473. you are the salt

  474. of the earth.

  475. It is also an invitation

  476. and a calling.

  477. Be the salt

  478. of the earth

  479. in the world.

  480. Jesus then goes on

  481. and he warns us.

  482. He warns us

  483. about losing this.

  484. Right?

  485. And we've talked

  486. about this idea

  487. that you are

  488. the salt of the earth,

  489. but if the salt

  490. become,

  491. this might be

  492. a more literal translation,

  493. but if the salt

  494. might become foolish,

  495. in what way

  496. can it be salty?

  497. That is,

  498. if it loses

  499. its fundamental essence,

  500. then it's no longer salt

  501. and it can't do

  502. what salt does.

  503. Now,

  504. some of you

  505. are chemistry majors here

  506. and you're thinking,

  507. okay,

  508. so NACL

  509. is a stable compound

  510. and it doesn't degrade.

  511. Salt doesn't actually

  512. become unsalty.

  513. It can't happen.

  514. So,

  515. first of all,

  516. in the first century,

  517. a lot of salt

  518. that was used

  519. wasn't actually

  520. mined salt

  521. that was that stable,

  522. but it was often

  523. evaporated salt,

  524. say,

  525. from the reeds

  526. on the sides

  527. of the Dead Sea

  528. and the evaporated salt

  529. would be mixed

  530. with other minerals

  531. and things

  532. and so it could

  533. degrade over time.

  534. So,

  535. this is one thought

  536. that some people have,

  537. but others just have,

  538. it might just be

  539. worth saying,

  540. don't push the imagery

  541. too far.

  542. Jesus isn't talking

  543. about chemistry.

  544. He's using an idiom

  545. of a particular substance

  546. that everybody knows,

  547. but he says,

  548. if salt is no longer salty,

  549. then what good is it?

  550. It's not good.

  551. It's not worth anything.

  552. If you put non-salty salt

  553. on your food,

  554. your food still tastes

  555. like whatever it did

  556. before you put the salt on.

  557. If you try to use it

  558. to preserve your food,

  559. it's not going to work.

  560. When salt loses

  561. its distinctive character,

  562. it becomes useless.

  563. And he says,

  564. all you can do

  565. is throw it on the path

  566. and trample it

  567. under your feet

  568. because that's really,

  569. that's all it could do.

  570. Maybe try to keep

  571. the dust down a little bit,

  572. like gravel.

  573. But it's not worth anything.

  574. Jesus says,

  575. in reality,

  576. this is a danger.

  577. You might lose this.

  578. You could lose this.

  579. How might that happen?

  580. Well, I want to point out

  581. two ways in which I think

  582. we lose our saltiness,

  583. our distinctiveness

  584. in the world.

  585. The first one is

  586. by becoming

  587. just like the world.

  588. This is a proverbial

  589. frog in the kettle, right?

  590. You put a frog

  591. in a cold kettle

  592. and you turn up the heat

  593. and the frog

  594. will stay in the kettle happily

  595. and it will boil to death,

  596. right?

  597. Because it doesn't know

  598. that it's becoming affected

  599. by the environment around it.

  600. So, we live in the world

  601. and we often become

  602. just like it.

  603. There are some terrible examples

  604. of this from the past.

  605. The church at times

  606. has supported slavery

  607. and using,

  608. owning people.

  609. The church has at times

  610. done things like

  611. ban interracial marriage.

  612. These were morals of the day,

  613. commonly assumed

  614. among the culture

  615. and the church

  616. swallowed it wholesale,

  617. much to our shame.

  618. There are other ways

  619. in which we can

  620. lose our saltiness.

  621. Theologically,

  622. we lose our saltiness.

  623. If you read the history

  624. of the 1800s

  625. and 19th century,

  626. you look at theology,

  627. the importing of

  628. enlightenment principles

  629. into the work

  630. of theology

  631. led some

  632. or many

  633. to believe

  634. that a scientific process

  635. and a scientific worldview

  636. and even a naturalistic

  637. scientific worldview

  638. was the right

  639. and proper

  640. and dominant way

  641. to think about things.

  642. And so,

  643. they went back

  644. to the Bible

  645. and they said,

  646. well,

  647. God can't do miracles

  648. because that's not

  649. the way the world works.

  650. that's a very broad brush.

  651. John could give you

  652. all the details.

  653. But it was one of the

  654. outworkings was

  655. that this naturalistic worldview

  656. then grew to such a point

  657. where churches were just saying,

  658. well,

  659. God can't do miracles

  660. because that's not the way

  661. the world works.

  662. Much to our shame

  663. and to our laws.

  664. Here's the third example.

  665. Enculturation and missions.

  666. Right?

  667. God has called us

  668. to take the good news

  669. of the gospel

  670. to the ends of the earth

  671. and to all peoples

  672. everywhere.

  673. But He didn't call us

  674. to take coats and ties

  675. or organs.

  676. Those are cultural expressions

  677. of Christianity.

  678. But you go to

  679. equatorial countries

  680. around the world

  681. and the Western church

  682. has exported

  683. certain things

  684. that have nothing

  685. to do with the gospel.

  686. They've exported culture

  687. instead.

  688. And in doing so,

  689. they've become,

  690. they've embraced

  691. the world around them

  692. that said,

  693. we need to,

  694. in the 19th century

  695. missional view,

  696. we need to civilize

  697. people who haven't,

  698. haven't yet embraced

  699. Western European culture.

  700. Much to our shame.

  701. So we need to recognize

  702. the danger is real.

  703. Where are the pressure points

  704. we feel today?

  705. What are the ways

  706. in which we might become

  707. like the world

  708. and not even be aware of it?

  709. Well, here's an idea.

  710. How about radical individualism?

  711. Let me ask you

  712. some diagnostic questions.

  713. Do you plan your schedule

  714. around your community

  715. or around your own

  716. life goals?

  717. Do you value

  718. group success

  719. over individual achievements?

  720. Do you value

  721. gathering as God's people

  722. more than your own

  723. personal plans

  724. for spiritual growth?

  725. I think radical individualism

  726. has the danger

  727. of undermining

  728. and destroying

  729. the church

  730. that God

  731. and we often

  732. just absorb it

  733. and just think

  734. this is normal

  735. when it's not.

  736. I promise you

  737. we won't talk about

  738. this every week

  739. but good heavens

  740. the church's engagement

  741. with politics

  742. right now

  743. is a mess

  744. and we have become

  745. like the world

  746. in anger

  747. and attacking

  748. lacking humility

  749. in the way

  750. that Christians

  751. have engaged

  752. in political discourse

  753. and listen

  754. I'm not saying

  755. that there's something

  756. there is good

  757. we'll talk about that

  758. there's good

  759. in engaging

  760. in political discourse

  761. but we must do it

  762. distinctively

  763. as Christians

  764. and here's my guess

  765. there are probably

  766. some people

  767. who are doing it

  768. but they never

  769. make the headlines

  770. because it's not

  771. splashy

  772. and it's not

  773. it's not controversial

  774. because they're working

  775. humbly

  776. and carefully

  777. and lovingly

  778. and persistently

  779. and faithfully

  780. but friends

  781. we need to consider

  782. how on a

  783. large scale

  784. organizationally

  785. and on a small scale

  786. individually

  787. can we engage

  788. with others

  789. about politics

  790. in a way

  791. that's going to have

  792. the aroma of Christ

  793. can we

  794. can we feel

  795. like Jesus

  796. to others

  797. when we're talking

  798. about

  799. elections

  800. policies

  801. principles

  802. principles

  803. I think

  804. there's also

  805. a danger

  806. today

  807. of us

  808. losing

  809. a distinctly

  810. Christian

  811. sexual ethic

  812. again

  813. I don't want

  814. to beat

  815. this horse

  816. over

  817. but we need

  818. to recognize

  819. how much

  820. assumptions

  821. about

  822. sexuality

  823. how we work

  824. why we work

  825. it is seen

  826. as the right

  827. and good

  828. human flourishing

  829. for people

  830. to be sexually

  831. active

  832. in whatever way

  833. they want to

  834. that is what

  835. our culture

  836. says

  837. and the Bible

  838. says something

  839. very different

  840. the Bible

  841. says

  842. that

  843. sexuality

  844. was given

  845. as a gift

  846. with a very

  847. particular purpose

  848. in a very

  849. particular context

  850. and yet

  851. the church

  852. in a

  853. misguided

  854. attempt

  855. to love

  856. everybody

  857. without

  858. regard

  859. is starting

  860. to say

  861. well maybe

  862. we don't

  863. actually have

  864. to hold

  865. to those

  866. things

  867. some of you

  868. are college

  869. students

  870. you know

  871. what your

  872. friends think

  873. you know

  874. and it's

  875. very tempting

  876. to say

  877. well maybe

  878. it's not

  879. such a big

  880. deal

  881. but do you

  882. see in doing

  883. that we

  884. lose the

  885. distinctiveness

  886. we lose

  887. our ability

  888. to be salty

  889. when we do

  890. these things

  891. those are a

  892. couple of

  893. examples of

  894. where we

  895. might lose

  896. it

  897. we could

  898. probably

  899. think of

  900. a bunch

  901. of others

  902. how we

  903. view

  904. marriage

  905. parenting

  906. family

  907. how we

  908. deal with

  909. money

  910. there are

  911. so many

  912. ways

  913. so many

  914. areas

  915. of our

  916. lives

  917. where we

  918. can lose

  919. our

  920. Christian

  921. distinctiveness

  922. by becoming

  923. like the

  924. world

  925. I think

  926. there's a

  927. second way

  928. and I need

  929. to be careful

  930. in how I

  931. say this

  932. but I'm

  933. going to go

  934. here

  935. because I

  936. think it's

  937. worth saying

  938. the other

  939. way we

  940. lose our

  941. Christian

  942. distinctiveness

  943. is by

  944. being distinct

  945. but not

  946. Christian

  947. in what

  948. we are

  949. and by

  950. that I

  951. mean we

  952. become

  953. distinctive

  954. for the

  955. wrong

  956. things

  957. when people

  958. look at us

  959. and what

  960. they think

  961. about us

  962. and what

  963. they see

  964. in us

  965. is not

  966. the kingdom

  967. and the

  968. gospel

  969. but something

  970. else

  971. there are

  972. some

  973. historical

  974. examples

  975. monasticism

  976. is an

  977. interesting

  978. way of

  979. saying

  980. hey we're

  981. going to

  982. be distinct

  983. from the

  984. world

  985. we're going

  986. to withdraw

  987. and live

  988. within our

  989. own

  990. insular

  991. community

  992. and interact

  993. only

  994. tangentially

  995. with the

  996. outside world

  997. right

  998. and what

  999. did they

  1000. become known

  1001. for

  1002. celibacy

  1003. tonsures

  1004. burlap

  1005. sacks

  1006. it seems

  1007. you know

  1008. it's

  1009. so that's

  1010. one historical

  1011. another historical

  1012. example

  1013. and again

  1014. I want to be

  1015. careful here

  1016. because you

  1017. can be a

  1018. real follower

  1019. of Jesus

  1020. but maybe

  1021. lose your

  1022. saltiness

  1023. by becoming

  1024. a monk

  1025. the other

  1026. example I'm

  1027. going to

  1028. use is

  1029. the Amish

  1030. and because

  1031. the Amish

  1032. I think

  1033. there can be

  1034. true believers

  1035. within the

  1036. Amish community

  1037. I'm not

  1038. judging their

  1039. spiritual

  1040. but what

  1041. are they

  1042. known for

  1043. the way

  1044. they dress

  1045. they don't

  1046. drive cars

  1047. they don't

  1048. use electricity

  1049. they want

  1050. to separate

  1051. themselves

  1052. from the

  1053. world

  1054. in a

  1055. particular

  1056. way that

  1057. seems very

  1058. culture bound

  1059. and that's

  1060. what they're

  1061. known for

  1062. and again

  1063. we want

  1064. to say

  1065. what are

  1066. what are

  1067. we

  1068. if we're

  1069. distinctive

  1070. for things

  1071. that aren't

  1072. about the

  1073. kingdom

  1074. and about

  1075. Jesus

  1076. don't we

  1077. also lose

  1078. our

  1079. distinctiveness

  1080. then we

  1081. just

  1082. to be blunt

  1083. we just

  1084. become weird

  1085. we just

  1086. become odd

  1087. maybe we

  1088. like

  1089. revel in

  1090. our

  1091. distinctive

  1092. otherness

  1093. because we

  1094. see the

  1095. evils in

  1096. the society

  1097. we have

  1098. but if

  1099. we're not

  1100. distinctive

  1101. about the

  1102. kingdom

  1103. the things

  1104. of the

  1105. kingdom

  1106. then we

  1107. also lose

  1108. our

  1109. saltiness

  1110. Christians

  1111. can become

  1112. distinctive

  1113. about

  1114. diet plans

  1115. and money

  1116. management

  1117. and

  1118. what movies

  1119. we watch

  1120. and don't

  1121. watch

  1122. we can be

  1123. distinctive

  1124. about all

  1125. sorts of

  1126. and listen

  1127. there are

  1128. great

  1129. opportunities

  1130. for us

  1131. to think

  1132. Christianly

  1133. about all

  1134. of those

  1135. things

  1136. right

  1137. none of

  1138. those things

  1139. are bad

  1140. topics

  1141. for us

  1142. to think

  1143. Christianly

  1144. about

  1145. but we

  1146. want to

  1147. make sure

  1148. that when

  1149. people

  1150. meet us

  1151. our

  1152. distinctiveness

  1153. is

  1154. characterized

  1155. by

  1156. and points

  1157. to

  1158. the thing

  1159. that we're

  1160. meant to be

  1161. most

  1162. distinctive

  1163. about

  1164. and that

  1165. is the

  1166. gospel

  1167. for

  1168. ultimately

  1169. our

  1170. distinctiveness

  1171. is that

  1172. we are

  1173. no longer

  1174. ours

  1175. but we

  1176. have been

  1177. bought

  1178. by a

  1179. price

  1180. that we

  1181. were dead

  1182. in our

  1183. sins

  1184. and trespasses

  1185. and God

  1186. has made

  1187. us alive

  1188. with him

  1189. in Christ

  1190. the

  1191. distinctiveness

  1192. is that

  1193. we

  1194. now

  1195. live

  1196. and engage

  1197. in the

  1198. world

  1199. because of

  1200. the message

  1201. of the

  1202. gospel

  1203. that God

  1204. has come

  1205. to us

  1206. to rescue

  1207. us

  1208. from sin

  1209. and the

  1210. condemnation

  1211. we deserve

  1212. that by

  1213. his life

  1214. death

  1215. and resurrection

  1216. Jesus

  1217. has freed

  1218. us

  1219. from

  1220. sin

  1221. so that

  1222. we can

  1223. know

  1224. God

  1225. unlike

  1226. other

  1227. religions

  1228. it is

  1229. that

  1230. not

  1231. our

  1232. works

  1233. that

  1234. save

  1235. us

  1236. but

  1237. it is

  1238. his

  1239. freely

  1240. given

  1241. grace

  1242. that we

  1243. receive

  1244. by

  1245. faith

  1246. this

  1247. is the

  1248. good news

  1249. of the

  1250. gospel

  1251. and God

  1252. calls us

  1253. to repent

  1254. of our

  1255. life

  1256. in the

  1257. world

  1258. and to

  1259. come

  1260. into

  1261. his

  1262. kingdom

  1263. and be

  1264. a citizen

  1265. of his

  1266. kingdom

  1267. and a

  1268. child

  1269. of the

  1270. one

  1271. true

  1272. God

  1273. having

  1274. together

  1275. Christ

  1276. as the

  1277. head

  1278. of us

  1279. our

  1280. community

  1281. to

  1282. follow

  1283. him

  1284. living

  1285. as

  1286. members

  1287. of the

  1288. kingdom

  1289. and this

  1290. is the

  1291. thing

  1292. that should

  1293. be most

  1294. distinct

  1295. about us

  1296. and this

  1297. distinctness

  1298. shows itself

  1299. in different

  1300. ways

  1301. it's

  1302. distinct

  1303. because

  1304. we know

  1305. we're

  1306. sinners

  1307. so

  1308. we can

  1309. say

  1310. I'm

  1311. sorry

  1312. and ask

  1313. for

  1314. forgiveness

  1315. we know

  1316. we're

  1317. saved by

  1318. grace

  1319. so

  1320. we don't

  1321. have to

  1322. be

  1323. self

  1324. righteous

  1325. about

  1326. what

  1327. we do

  1328. we're

  1329. distinct

  1330. because

  1331. we know

  1332. we deserve

  1333. judgment

  1334. so we

  1335. don't

  1336. look at

  1337. ourselves

  1338. as better

  1339. than others

  1340. around us

  1341. but instead

  1342. we are

  1343. people who

  1344. know

  1345. we've

  1346. received

  1347. mercy

  1348. and that

  1349. gives us

  1350. great joy

  1351. and mercy

  1352. for the

  1353. people

  1354. around us

  1355. we're

  1356. distinct

  1357. because

  1358. we know

  1359. a savior

  1360. who did

  1361. not count

  1362. his glory

  1363. with God

  1364. something to

  1365. be

  1366. held

  1367. on to

  1368. but

  1369. who

  1370. humbled

  1371. himself

  1372. and

  1373. showed

  1374. his glory

  1375. through

  1376. his

  1377. humility

  1378. and his

  1379. sacrifice

  1380. and his

  1381. death

  1382. and so

  1383. we follow

  1384. him

  1385. in the way

  1386. that we

  1387. love

  1388. others

  1389. in that

  1390. way

  1391. one of

  1392. the most

  1393. fundamental

  1394. things

  1395. that I

  1396. think

  1397. is

  1398. we

  1399. in his

  1400. kingdom

  1401. know

  1402. that the

  1403. world

  1404. is not

  1405. about us

  1406. anymore

  1407. it's

  1408. about

  1409. him

  1410. and so

  1411. everything

  1412. is changed

  1413. everything

  1414. is reoriented

  1415. about

  1416. knowing

  1417. and loving

  1418. and following

  1419. Jesus

  1420. this is

  1421. the distinct

  1422. thing

  1423. and when

  1424. we love

  1425. and trust

  1426. in

  1427. and obey

  1428. and delight

  1429. in Jesus

  1430. this

  1431. distinctiveness

  1432. will be

  1433. seen

  1434. and we

  1435. will be

  1436. the salt

  1437. of the

  1438. earth

  1439. let's

  1440. pray

  1441. together

  1442. oh

  1443. Lord

  1444. we pray

  1445. as we

  1446. have

  1447. reflected

  1448. on this

  1449. simple

  1450. passage

  1451. and on

  1452. its

  1453. challenging

  1454. content

  1455. Lord

  1456. search our

  1457. hearts

  1458. we pray

  1459. show us

  1460. if there

  1461. are ways

  1462. in which

  1463. we have

  1464. become

  1465. too much

  1466. like the

  1467. world

  1468. or become

  1469. distinctive

  1470. in ways

  1471. that we

  1472. ought not

  1473. and Lord

  1474. help us

  1475. to become

  1476. distinctive

  1477. in increasing

  1478. measure

  1479. by returning

  1480. to

  1481. the core

  1482. of our

  1483. faith

  1484. the person

  1485. of Jesus

  1486. and his

  1487. work of

  1488. salvation

  1489. for us

  1490. Lord I

  1491. pray this

  1492. would be

  1493. true for

  1494. me

  1495. I pray

  1496. it would

  1497. be true

  1498. for us

  1499. as a

  1500. community

  1501. at

  1502. Trinity

  1503. I pray

  1504. it would

  1505. be true

  1506. for your

  1507. church

  1508. throughout

  1509. the world

  1510. pray this

  1511. in Jesus

  1512. name

  1513. amen

  1514. to

  1515. you

  1516. you

  1517. you

  1518. you
