  1. Well, good morning. It's good to see you here. As we turn to God's Word, we are going to be talking

  2. this morning about sexual righteousness. I want to start by saying this is not a hobby horse of

  3. our church that we pick on. We're preaching on this passage because it's the next one in the

  4. series. We're looking through the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 through 7, and this is the next

  5. passage and the topic that Jesus brings to us this morning. But I'm not going to apologize for

  6. preaching on this either because we need to be talking about this. We live in a culture

  7. which is increasingly and intensely sexualized. I am a reader of the New York Times. It is

  8. remarkable to me the topics of articles that I can read in the New York Times about

  9. things that I don't even want to speak about here in this building, about sexuality and the

  10. different ways in which our culture is embracing diverse and, may I say it, destructive expressions

  11. of sexuality. I don't think our culture is particularly more sexualized than other times

  12. in history. If you go back to the first century, you look at the practice of temple prostitution.

  13. This is not, there's nothing new under the sun. This has been true of humanity since humanity was

  14. created and fell into sin. But certainly we live in a day where particularly with our technology,

  15. we have a particular kind of pressure in our world to be thinking about sex and lifting up the value

  16. of sex all the time. So that's the first reason why we need to be talking about this. The second

  17. reason we need to be talking about this is because the church has failed in its calling to be different.

  18. You can read the statistics. Oh, they're marginally better in some surveys. Don't be completely distressed

  19. by this. But it's nowhere near distinctly different than the world around us. The headlines continue to be

  20. filled with spiritual leaders in the church and not the church out there, in our tribe, people that we know,

  21. sometimes people that we've personally known or followed or read who've fallen in to sexual sin.

  22. The last reason why we need to talk about this is because of the context of this passage this morning.

  23. If you want to turn with me to Matthew chapter 5, page 760 in your pew Bibles.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  24. We're looking at Matthew 5, verses 27 through 30.

    Matthew 5:27–30

  25. But you remember the context. If you've been here the last couple of weeks, you remember back in verses 17 through 20,

  26. Jesus said, I have not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. And what we read in that was that Jesus was saying,

  27. I am the thing to which the Old Testament law points to, and I am now putting myself in the center of what is the new kingdom that God is bringing.

  28. And I'm going to teach you what it looks like to be in my kingdom.

  29. And Jesus comes to us as a king this morning to say, this is how to take hold of kingdom life with me.

  30. These are the patterns of how you live. This is what it looks like to have, if you remember verse 20,

  31. a righteousness that exceeds that of the Pharisees.

  32. And so, we need to hear this word because Jesus has spoken it to us.

  33. So, with that, let me pray.

  34. And then I'll read God's word.

  35. And then we'll look at it together.

  36. Lord, help us this morning.

  37. We confess that our hearts just want to flee in this moment.

  38. Lord, we don't want to sit under your word.

  39. We love our independence too much.

  40. And Lord, some even now are feeling as well the enemy of our souls throwing accusations of shame and guilt.

  41. Lord, I pray this morning that by your Holy Spirit,

  42. you might help us to see the high calling and the greater grace

  43. that you give us as we talk about these things.

  44. Lord, be with me.

  45. Help me to speak your words.

  46. May we sit under your word together this morning, we pray.

  47. In Jesus' name.

  48. So, Jesus,

  49. in verse 27 of Matthew 5,

  50. says this,

  51. This is not a radical summary of this,

  52. but here's the big idea.

  53. Jesus calls us,

  54. his people,

  55. to a radical kingdom,

  56. sexual righteousness.

  57. Why do I use this phrase?

  58. Because I just don't want to keep saying sex, sex, sex all the time.

  59. I want to broaden it out.

  60. I want us to be thinking more broadly.

  61. It's a kingdom sexual righteousness

  62. that has to do with how we relate to our king.

  63. And it's not just about avoiding sin.

  64. It is a righteousness,

  65. a path that God has laid out for us

  66. of right living

  67. that we would follow it.

  68. And it is about sex.

  69. So, let's get into it.

  70. Here's my outline for those of you who are outline takers.

  71. We're going to talk about Jesus' definition

  72. of kingdom sexual righteousness.

  73. We're going to talk about the significance

  74. that Jesus gives

  75. to sexual kingdom righteousness.

  76. And then we're going to talk about Jesus' power

  77. to live

  78. kingdom sexual righteousness.

  79. So, firstly,

  80. verses 27 and 28,

  81. Jesus' definition

  82. of sexual righteousness.

  83. It is a pattern that we've already seen

  84. and we're going to keep repeating.

  85. The heart of this command

  86. is an internal thing,

  87. not an external thing.

  88. We see this throughout this section,

  89. starting in verse 21.

  90. Jesus says,

  91. You have heard it said,

  92. but I say to you,

  93. you have heard it said.

  94. This is an external practice of religion

  95. that the Pharisees in the first century

  96. embraced and lived on.

  97. And Jesus is saying,

  98. But I tell you that the heart of my kingdom

  99. has to do with the heart of humanity

  100. as it relates to God.

  101. And so, Jesus says,

  102. There is a seventh commandment.

  103. Do not commit adultery.

  104. You can read it in Exodus 20,

  105. part of what God gave to Moses.

  106. And, you know,

  107. the Pharisees in the first century said,

  108. That's it.

  109. The physical act.

  110. If you don't commit

  111. the physical act of adultery,

  112. then you can say,

  113. I've kept this commandment.

  114. Oddly how thankful we might be

  115. if we could even do this.

  116. Before we go on

  117. to talk about the heart center,

  118. we might want to talk briefly about

  119. why did God give this command at all?

  120. Because this is very different thinking

  121. from our culture today, right?

  122. But here's the thing.

  123. Our sex life is woven into this

  124. beautiful tapestry

  125. throughout Scripture

  126. of what God has created

  127. human beings to do.

  128. And in Genesis 1,

  129. He created humanity,

  130. male and female,

  131. and He said,

  132. Be fruitful and multiply.

  133. Guess what?

  134. That means they had sex.

  135. So they could have babies.

  136. So they could fulfill this.

  137. But it wasn't just for that.

  138. It was more than that.

  139. It was also for their companionship

  140. and for their complementary.

  141. That is,

  142. in two different bodies

  143. coming together,

  144. this beautiful picture

  145. of a oneness.

  146. So God said,

  147. The two shall become one flesh.

  148. And this is true in our heart

  149. and in our soul

  150. and in our lives

  151. as well as in our physical actions.

  152. And God gives us

  153. beautiful gift

  154. to humanity

  155. in Genesis 1.

  156. And yet we see

  157. in Genesis 3

  158. that humanity

  159. rebelled against God

  160. and rejected His ways.

  161. And we see throughout

  162. the whole rest of

  163. human history,

  164. certainly biblical history,

  165. that humanity

  166. misuses sex

  167. to its detriment,

  168. to its harm.

  169. There are lots of examples,

  170. but they're descriptive.

  171. And there's,

  172. with the exception

  173. of maybe Ruth,

  174. I couldn't think

  175. of another good example

  176. where maybe there was

  177. a picture of something

  178. beautiful

  179. about human sexuality.

  180. Usually it's the aberration

  181. that is depicted

  182. in the Old Testament.

  183. But we do see this thread

  184. of marriage

  185. and sexuality

  186. being woven through

  187. the Old Testament.

  188. Oh, I forgot.

  189. Song of Solomon.

  190. The Song of Solomon

  191. is also there

  192. to tell us about

  193. the glories

  194. and the joys,

  195. the delight

  196. and pleasure

  197. that sex in marriage

  198. is meant for us

  199. to have

  200. and to enjoy.

  201. But we also see

  202. this thread

  203. where this marriage

  204. between man and woman,

  205. this picture,

  206. isn't the end

  207. in itself

  208. for humanity.

  209. But God created us

  210. with this picture

  211. of two becoming one,

  212. this marriage,

  213. so that we might

  214. actually understand

  215. God and His love

  216. for us.

  217. And so we read

  218. in places like Hosea

  219. that God loved His people

  220. like a faithful husband,

  221. like a spouse

  222. who pursued in love

  223. and grace,

  224. an unfaithful wife

  225. who broke the covenant

  226. again and again and again.

  227. And we see

  228. as we go to the New Testament,

  229. God brings these ideas together

  230. in Ephesians 5

  231. and says

  232. that the coming together

  233. of a man and woman

  234. in marriage

  235. is meant to picture

  236. God's love for the church

  237. and the Savior's love

  238. as He lays down His life

  239. to serve

  240. and to save the church

  241. and for the church

  242. to be one that responds

  243. to this loving action

  244. with devotion

  245. and submission.

  246. And we see

  247. as we get to the end

  248. of the storyline,

  249. John prayed about it earlier,

  250. and sorry,

  251. I get choked.

  252. There's a day coming

  253. when we,

  254. the bride of Christ,

  255. will be made new

  256. and sin will be gone

  257. and Jesus will know us

  258. completely and fully

  259. and we will know Him

  260. and we will worship Him

  261. and we will experience

  262. at the,

  263. what is called

  264. in Revelation,

  265. the end of Revelation,

  266. 19, 20, 21,

  267. the wedding feast

  268. of the Lamb.

  269. We will come

  270. and be the bride

  271. and He will be

  272. our bridegroom

  273. and we will know

  274. that the greatest sex

  275. we've ever encountered here

  276. is just a foretaste.

  277. It's a nibble

  278. of the joy

  279. and delight

  280. and intimacy

  281. of knowing Jesus

  282. and being known by Him

  283. and being loved by Him.

  284. And this is what God

  285. created it for,

  286. a signpost

  287. for something far greater

  288. and our culture

  289. has made it the end.

  290. This is why

  291. the Bible talks

  292. about sexual sin

  293. because its purpose

  294. is glorious

  295. and our sin

  296. stains it

  297. and corrupts it.

  298. And Jesus says

  299. it's not just

  300. about the act.

  301. He says

  302. if anyone

  303. looks at a woman

  304. with lustful intent,

  305. he has committed

  306. adultery with her

  307. in his heart.

  308. What does it mean

  309. to look with lustful intent?

  310. Well,

  311. there's this process,

  312. isn't there?

  313. There's a seeing,

  314. there's an activation

  315. of our senses.

  316. And in response

  317. to that senses,

  318. lots of commentators

  319. brought this up,

  320. I thought it was really,

  321. there's an imagination

  322. that arouses in us.

  323. There's a something

  324. that arouses

  325. in our minds

  326. and in our hearts

  327. that we want,

  328. that we desire.

  329. And then we take

  330. this desire

  331. and we apply it

  332. to something we see

  333. or someone that we see

  334. with lustful intent

  335. that is a passion

  336. that is not pure,

  337. that is not loving,

  338. that is not serving,

  339. but it is a desire

  340. to covet for oneself.

  341. It is selfish

  342. in orientation.

  343. It is to control

  344. the other person

  345. for one's own pleasure.

  346. It is to use

  347. the other person

  348. to objectify them

  349. to gain what we desire.

  350. And this is what Jesus means

  351. by looking with lustful intent.

  352. There's a great story

  353. in the Bible about this.

  354. Look at 2 Samuel 11.

  355. David,

  356. who should be out to war,

  357. but he wasn't,

  358. he was up on his roof

  359. and he saw the woman.

  360. And the scripture says

  361. he saw him

  362. and she was very beautiful.

  363. And David sent

  364. and inquired about the woman

  365. and David sent messengers

  366. and took her

  367. and she came to him

  368. and he lay with her.

  369. He saw her.

  370. She was someone else's husband.

  371. But David said,

  372. I don't care about that.

  373. I want her for myself.

  374. I'm going to take her

  375. and I'm going to make her mine

  376. and I'm going to use her

  377. for my pleasure.

  378. This is the picture

  379. of lustful intent.

  380. And David did it physically,

  381. but we do it in our minds,

  382. don't we?

  383. And our imaginations

  384. may go in different places

  385. because we're all different.

  386. But in the end,

  387. it's this sinful desire

  388. to have and control

  389. that is at the center of it.

  390. And Jesus says,

  391. when we do this,

  392. when we think in these ways,

  393. we've committed adultery

  394. in our hearts.

  395. We are just like those

  396. who have done it physically.

  397. Now, some of you may be thinking,

  398. well, Jesus is just talking

  399. about a man looking at a woman

  400. and this is about adultery

  401. and I'm not married,

  402. so this isn't about me.

  403. This is about someone else.

  404. Well, John Stott argues this

  405. and I agree with him.

  406. He says,

  407. to argue that the reference

  408. is only to a man

  409. lusting after a woman

  410. and not vice versa

  411. and only to a married man

  412. and not to an unmarried

  413. since the offender

  414. is said to commit adultery,

  415. not fornication,

  416. is to be guilty

  417. of the very casuistry,

  418. that is the very kind

  419. of thinking

  420. that the Pharisees used

  421. to limit the effect

  422. of the command,

  423. the very casuistry

  424. which Jesus was condemning

  425. in the Pharisees.

  426. His argument is that any

  427. and every sexual practice

  428. which is immoral indeed

  429. is also immoral

  430. in look and in thought.

  431. Jesus says,

  432. you need a righteousness

  433. that is greater

  434. than the Pharisees

  435. and this is for all of us,

  436. single, married, widowed

  437. and we see it throughout

  438. the whole New Testament.

  439. It's in Romans 1,

  440. it's in 1 Corinthians 5-7,

  441. it's in Galatians 5,

  442. it's in Ephesians 5,

  443. it's in Colossians 3,

  444. it's in the passage

  445. that Richard read earlier

  446. in 1 Thessalonians 4.

  447. Repeatedly over and over again,

  448. the kingdom commands

  449. is to avoid this way.

  450. Now, I want to give

  451. some clarifications here.

  452. First of all,

  453. it doesn't mean

  454. that all attraction

  455. is lustful intent.

  456. it is actually possible

  457. to look at something

  458. and appreciate a beauty

  459. without desiring to control it

  460. and use it

  461. for your own selfish good.

  462. In our sexualized culture,

  463. it feels almost like a pipe dream,

  464. but it is actually possible to do.

  465. And secondly,

  466. we need to recognize

  467. that not all sexual desire

  468. is inherently sinful.

  469. Certainly within a marriage,

  470. it is a glorious thing, right?

  471. And to recognize

  472. that you have a desire for this

  473. that you don't allow

  474. to control you

  475. and that doesn't affect

  476. the way that you perceive

  477. other people,

  478. there can be an honest desire

  479. for that

  480. that can be righteous

  481. when you don't use people

  482. to get it.

  483. And thirdly,

  484. we need to recognize

  485. that there's a distinction

  486. between sin and temptation.

  487. Martin Luther famously

  488. was quoted as saying,

  489. you can't keep the birds

  490. from flying over your head,

  491. but you can keep them

  492. from nesting in your hair.

  493. What does that mean?

  494. It means that you may see things

  495. that will begin to tickle

  496. your imagination

  497. and lead you down this path,

  498. but you can stop it there.

  499. You have not sinned

  500. where you recognize,

  501. oh, that's a temptation

  502. for me to do more.

  503. But when you say,

  504. oh, well,

  505. now that I've seen it,

  506. what else can I do?

  507. I'm just gonna,

  508. I'm gonna cherish

  509. that thought for a while.

  510. I'm gonna let it marinate.

  511. I'm gonna ponder on,

  512. I'm gonna meditate

  513. on this thing

  514. that I'm seeing

  515. and I'm gonna let it

  516. capture my heart

  517. and let it lead me

  518. down this path

  519. of destruction.

  520. There's a distinction

  521. between the moment

  522. of temptation

  523. and the falling into sin.

  524. And this is where

  525. the battle is fought.

  526. And I wanna say to you

  527. that there is an alternative.

  528. It is possible

  529. with the gospel

  530. to look at men and women

  531. and to say,

  532. they are people

  533. made in God's image

  534. worthy of honor

  535. and dignity.

  536. They are,

  537. as men and women,

  538. under the fall,

  539. worthy of compassion

  540. and grace and truth.

  541. As men and women,

  542. they are in need

  543. of God's love

  544. and grace.

  545. We can show them.

  546. One of the best things

  547. you can do

  548. if you find yourself

  549. falling down this trap

  550. is look someone

  551. in the eye.

  552. Look at them

  553. in their face

  554. and that will remind you

  555. that they are people

  556. and not objects

  557. to be longed after

  558. and lusted after.

  559. But they're people

  560. made in God's image.

  561. Jesus says to us,

  562. if we look at another

  563. with lustful intent,

  564. we have committed adultery

  565. in our hearts.

  566. So we have to ask ourselves

  567. some uncomfortable questions.

  568. How do we look

  569. at other people?

  570. What do we feed

  571. with our eyes?

  572. Not just the really bad stuff,

  573. but what do we feed

  574. that's commonplace?

  575. Where do you see

  576. your own heart

  577. and your own imagination

  578. wandering?

  579. Is Jesus' kingdom

  580. sexual righteousness

  581. characteristic

  582. of your life

  583. in your heart

  584. as well as

  585. in your actions?

  586. Jesus goes on,

  587. verses 29 through 30,

  588. to talk about

  589. the significance of this

  590. as he sees it.

  591. Jesus in these two verses

  592. talk about

  593. the weight

  594. that this is carrying

  595. because he says,

  596. if something

  597. causes you to sin

  598. in this way,

  599. that there's,

  600. in context,

  601. it's saying,

  602. if these things,

  603. if your eye

  604. causes you to sin,

  605. pluck it out.

  606. If your hand

  607. causes you to sin,

  608. cut it off.

  609. Now,

  610. despite a few

  611. possibly apocryphal stories

  612. from church history

  613. about people

  614. who actually literally

  615. physically did this

  616. and did things like

  617. castrate themselves

  618. in order to not sin,

  619. I don't think

  620. that's an appropriate

  621. application.

  622. He's not talking

  623. about self-mutilation.

  624. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  625. has a great image

  626. in his commentary

  627. on this

  628. where he says,

  629. how far do we have

  630. to go

  631. to cut off our members

  632. that cause us to sin?

  633. We end up like

  634. the guy in Mighty Python,

  635. just a torso saying,

  636. I think I'm getting better.

  637. Sorry,

  638. if you don't know that,

  639. it's a random,

  640. but we can't cut off

  641. our body enough

  642. to remove it

  643. because the sin

  644. resides in our heart.

  645. So this is a metaphor.

  646. He's using a figure

  647. of speech

  648. to say

  649. that it's something

  650. different.

  651. And for Jesus,

  652. he says,

  653. the stakes are eternal.

  654. If we continue

  655. to be drawn

  656. down this path,

  657. if we continue

  658. to cherish

  659. these things

  660. more than God

  661. and his kingdom,

  662. then we are walking

  663. away from Jesus.

  664. We are walking

  665. away from his kingdom.

  666. And that path

  667. leads us to hell.

  668. It leads us

  669. to a place

  670. of condemnation

  671. because we have

  672. loved something else

  673. more than we have

  674. loved God.

  675. So Jesus says,

  676. we need to give this

  677. weight,

  678. the weightiness

  679. of our eternal destiny.

  680. so what does it look like?

  681. Well, friends,

  682. there is not enough time

  683. today to get through

  684. everything I could say

  685. about this.

  686. There is lots

  687. of practical wisdom

  688. out there.

  689. I actually found

  690. John Stott

  691. in his commentary

  692. on the Sermon on the Mount

  693. to be immensely helpful.

  694. So much of what

  695. I'm about to say

  696. is in his words.

  697. I'm just not going

  698. to quote him

  699. all the time.

  700. But he has a couple

  701. of things.

  702. He said,

  703. you know,

  704. what Jesus is saying

  705. is not that we're

  706. to be physically

  707. self-maiming,

  708. but he says we're

  709. to be ruthlessly

  710. morally self-denying.

  711. That is,

  712. we are to take this

  713. so seriously

  714. that not physically

  715. pluck out our eye,

  716. but to behave

  717. as if we don't have

  718. an eye

  719. to see something

  720. that will lead us

  721. into temptation.

  722. To cut off our hand

  723. that is to behave

  724. in such a way

  725. that we can't touch

  726. those things

  727. that we might touch

  728. that would lead us

  729. into falling into

  730. this violation

  731. of sexual kingdom

  732. righteousness.

  733. Now here's the hard part.

  734. It's not a list of rules.

  735. Oh, we've tried over time

  736. to create new sets of rules.

  737. We end up looking

  738. a lot like the Pharisees.

  739. Here's a checklist.

  740. If I don't do these,

  741. these, these, these,

  742. these, I should be okay.

  743. But interestingly,

  744. Jesus puts all of these,

  745. both of these verses

  746. in a conditional.

  747. If this causes you

  748. to stumble,

  749. radically respond.

  750. If this causes you

  751. to fall into sin,

  752. don't do it.

  753. So we need to recognize

  754. that there isn't a,

  755. there isn't a playbook

  756. that says in every circumstance

  757. you must do this,

  758. this, this, this, this.

  759. Christian life is about

  760. knowing our heart

  761. and knowing Jesus.

  762. And so for us to flee

  763. from this means

  764. that we must know

  765. what our particular weaknesses are,

  766. what our particular temptations are,

  767. where our imagination goes.

  768. And it could be very,

  769. very different

  770. for different ones of us.

  771. It's also why we need

  772. to be careful

  773. not to judge one another

  774. about I do this

  775. and they do that.

  776. I watch Game of Thrones.

  777. I don't watch Game of Thrones.

  778. You know what?

  779. Before God,

  780. are you pursuing

  781. this kind of kingdom righteousness?

  782. Do we play around

  783. with temptation?

  784. Do we feed our eyes

  785. with filth?

  786. In our pride,

  787. do we think,

  788. I can handle this?

  789. In our desire

  790. to not feel weird,

  791. do we flirt

  792. on the edges

  793. of sin

  794. so that we can connect

  795. with others around us?

  796. Jesus says,

  797. no,

  798. be strong,

  799. be decisive,

  800. be brave.

  801. It's worth losing much

  802. to gain the kingdom

  803. of Jesus.

  804. Now I'm going to quote Stott.

  805. This is a little long,

  806. but I think it's worth listening to.

  807. To obey this command of Jesus

  808. will involve for many of us

  809. a certain kind of maiming.

  810. He puts that in quotes.

  811. We shall have to eliminate

  812. from our lives

  813. certain things

  814. which,

  815. though innocent in themselves,

  816. either are

  817. or could easily become

  818. sources of temptation.

  819. That is,

  820. we shall deliberately decline

  821. to read certain literature,

  822. see certain films,

  823. visit certain exhibitions.

  824. If we do this,

  825. we shall be regarded

  826. by some of our contemporaries

  827. as narrow-minded,

  828. untaught Philistines.

  829. What?

  830. They will say to us

  831. incredulously.

  832. You have not read

  833. such and such book.

  834. You have not seen

  835. such and such a film.

  836. Why,

  837. you're not educated.

  838. And they may be right.

  839. We may have to be

  840. culturally maimed,

  841. again in quotes,

  842. in order to preserve

  843. our purity of mind.

  844. The only question is

  845. whether for the sake

  846. of this gain,

  847. we are willing to bear

  848. that loss

  849. and endure

  850. that ridicule.

  851. Friends,

  852. we might need to do

  853. something different

  854. with these.

  855. We might need

  856. to get a flip phone

  857. without a screen.

  858. We might need

  859. to change the way

  860. we hang out

  861. with our girlfriend

  862. or our boyfriend.

  863. We might need

  864. to think about

  865. the films

  866. and the art

  867. and the books

  868. that we read.

  869. I don't want us

  870. to be prude,

  871. but you need to know

  872. what is it

  873. that leads you

  874. into temptation

  875. and are you willing

  876. to flee from that

  877. no matter what it is?

  878. Practically,

  879. if you feel like

  880. you're caught

  881. in this cycle,

  882. if this is so common

  883. for you,

  884. looking,

  885. seeing,

  886. the Bible talks

  887. about our growth

  888. and sanctification,

  889. I believe,

  890. in,

  891. it has sort of

  892. two levels

  893. because there's a,

  894. there's a surface

  895. level of

  896. you need to stop

  897. sinning,

  898. right?

  899. You need to stop

  900. doing things

  901. that you know

  902. are against

  903. what God

  904. has told you

  905. to do

  906. and this is where

  907. personal discipline

  908. and self-denial

  909. and knowing

  910. your own self

  911. and setting

  912. healthy boundaries

  913. and getting

  914. accountability

  915. and support

  916. are all good,

  917. but we also need

  918. to know

  919. that's never enough

  920. because the surface,

  921. what we do

  922. when we,

  923. when we manage

  924. to do that

  925. to a certain extent

  926. is we clear space

  927. in our lives

  928. for the heart work

  929. that Jesus wants

  930. to do

  931. to transform us

  932. so that we can,

  933. so that our hearts

  934. are renewed

  935. in ways

  936. that we will love

  937. other things

  938. more than the sins

  939. that we,

  940. listen,

  941. if we every day

  942. drink Coke

  943. and eat Cheetos,

  944. we're not going

  945. to want anything

  946. besides Coke

  947. and Cheetos,

  948. maybe some of you

  949. will because you're

  950. like,

  951. oh,

  952. that sounds terrible,

  953. but if we keep

  954. eating junk food

  955. all the time,

  956. our diet will never

  957. improve,

  958. we need to stop

  959. eating those things

  960. and then we need

  961. to find out

  962. that pears

  963. and apples

  964. and cheese

  965. and bread

  966. and whatever else

  967. that is healthy food

  968. is good for you

  969. this is true

  970. with our appetites

  971. as well.

  972. As Jeremiah 2 says,

  973. we need to turn

  974. from drinking

  975. from cisterns

  976. with poison water

  977. of sin

  978. and rebellion

  979. against God

  980. and turn

  981. and be drinking

  982. from the fountain

  983. of Jesus

  984. who is the one

  985. who springs up

  986. to eternal life

  987. in our hearts.

  988. when we do this

  989. then we are able

  990. to look at others

  991. not in lust

  992. but in love

  993. and we are able

  994. to gaze upon Jesus

  995. and know his beauty

  996. and this is distinctive

  997. Christian living.

  998. All right,

  999. I'll be honest with you,

  1000. I don't know where

  1001. these next three

  1002. little tidbits

  1003. fit in my sermon

  1004. so I'm putting them

  1005. in here now.

  1006. One,

  1007. pornography is pernicious.

  1008. It's a pandemic

  1009. in our culture

1010. and it is in direct

  1011. violation

  1012. to Jesus' command here.

  1013. It is exactly

  1014. designed to do

  1015. what Jesus says

  1016. we should not do.

  1017. And I'm so thankful

  1018. that in our church

  1019. we have a group

  1020. of men now

  1021. in our freedom group

  1022. who are saying,

  1023. I don't want that

1024. and I want to change

  1025. and they're able

  1026. to help one another

  1027. do both levels

  1028. of growth

  1029. and if you need

  1030. that kind of help,

1031. if you need that help,

  1032. come talk to me.

  1033. Talk to a friend.

  1034. Get connected

  1035. to the group.

  1036. And if you're a woman,

  1037. we can connect you

  1038. with external groups

  1039. that also exist

  1040. if you are caught

1041. in this kind of sin

  1042. or if you're dealing

  1043. with the hurt

  1044. and betrayal

  1045. of your partner

  1046. or your spouse.

  1047. Secondly,

  1048. I want to recognize

  1049. that some here

  1050. may have experienced

  1051. sexual abuse

  1052. or assault.

  1053. And this whole topic

  1054. gets really,

  1055. really warped,

  1056. doesn't it?

  1057. Because something's

  1058. been done to you

  1059. and yet you feel

  1060. guilt and shame

  1061. about it.

1062. I want you to know

  1063. that Jesus looks

  1064. at you

  1065. with a heart

  1066. of compassion

  1067. and of love

  1068. and of acceptance

  1069. and he invites you

  1070. to come to him

  1071. to find healing

  1072. and to find wholeness

  1073. and to find redemption.

  1074. You are not

  1075. stained and scarred

  1076. forever

  1077. by what has happened

  1078. to you.

  1079. My heart

  1080. as a pastor

  1081. breaks for you

  1082. and I hope

  1083. that our church

  1084. can be a part

  1085. of helping you heal.

  1086. Finally,

  1087. we need to recognize

  1088. that one of

  1089. the enemy

  1090. of our soul,

  1091. Satan's devices,

  1092. is to bury us

  1093. in shame

  1094. and guilt

  1095. in this area.

  1096. Some of you

  1097. are sitting here

  1098. and you're thinking,

  1099. I'm going to hell

  1100. because that's

  1101. what this verse says.

  1102. You're thinking,

  1103. I don't know

  1104. any other way

  1105. to live

  1106. and I'm stuck

  1107. and sometimes

  1108. the church

  1109. has been

  1110. the worst place

  1111. for you

  1112. because the church

  1113. has metaphorically

  1114. passed out

  1115. their scarlet letters.

  1116. You're the worst sinner.

  1117. You're the unacceptable one.

  1118. The lie

  1119. is that

  1120. sexual sin

  1121. is the unforgivable sin

  1122. and Satan

  1123. whispers it

  1124. or he yells it

  1125. in our ear

  1126. every day.

  1127. But friends,

  1128. the gospel

  1129. has good news.

  1130. Such good news

  1131. for us.

1132. This is my third point.

  1133. Jesus

  1134. is able to,

  1135. Jesus has power

  1136. to help us

  1137. live

  1138. lives

  1139. of kingdom

  1140. sexual righteousness.

  1141. There are three ways

1142. as I close in this.

  1143. First,

1144. Jesus has made it possible

  1145. for the forgiveness

  1146. of our sins.

  1147. He came

  1148. and lived

  1149. a perfect life

1150. so that he could go

1151. and die on the cross

  1152. for our sins.

  1153. He bore

  1154. the punishment

  1155. and the shame

  1156. and the guilt

  1157. for the sins

  1158. that we have committed.

  1159. The sins

  1160. that we are committing.

  1161. Even the sins

  1162. that we will commit

  1163. for those

  1164. who have placed

  1165. their faith

  1166. in Jesus.

  1167. He has

  1168. covered us.

  1169. And however

  1170. stained we may feel

  1171. by sexual sin,

  1172. Jesus says,

  1173. I've washed it away.

  1174. And however long

  1175. the list

  1176. of offenses

  1177. is,

  1178. Jesus says,

  1179. I've erased

  1180. the record.

  1181. And there's freedom

  1182. from shame

  1183. and guilt.

  1184. There's freedom

  1185. from the hamster wheel

  1186. of saying,

1187. if only I can be good enough,

1188. maybe I can get out

  1189. of this.

  1190. Freedom from the insecurity

  1191. of thinking

  1192. we are unworthy

  1193. of God's love

  1194. because of our sin.

  1195. Jesus at the cross

  1196. says,

  1197. I've died for you

  1198. for the forgiveness

  1199. of your sins.

  1200. Come to me.

  1201. me.

  1202. And there's more

  1203. than that

  1204. because not only

  1205. has he forgiven us

  1206. and declared us

  1207. forgiven,

1208. but he's also given us

  1209. a new heart

  1210. and a new spirit

  1211. so that we can

  1212. follow him.

1213. Jesus rose from the dead

  1214. to eternal life

1215. so that he might impart

1216. to those who have faith

  1217. in him

  1218. eternal life as well.

  1219. and with that

  1220. eternal life

  1221. is this rebirth,

  1222. this renewing

  1223. of our heart

  1224. and soul

  1225. so that we can

  1226. actually love God.

  1227. Our old heart,

  1228. it just loves

  1229. to feed

  1230. on the feast

  1231. of sin.

  1232. But God's given us

  1233. a new heart

  1234. to feast

  1235. at the banquet table

  1236. of the riches

  1237. of God

  1238. and his kingdom

  1239. so that we're

  1240. spiritually alive

  1241. where we once

  1242. were dead

  1243. and where once

  1244. we were enslaved

  1245. to sin,

  1246. now we are free

1247. to choose not to sin,

  1248. free to love Jesus

1249. with all of our heart

  1250. and soul

  1251. and mind

  1252. and strength,

  1253. freedom

  1254. to seek

  1255. a new life

  1256. joyful

  1257. in righteousness.

  1258. This is why

  1259. the New Testament

  1260. writers repeatedly say,

  1261. put off,

1262. put off the old man,

1263. put off the old practices,

1264. put off the old lifestyle,

1265. put off the old patterns

  1266. of your heart

  1267. and your mind

  1268. and put on,

  1269. put on something

  1270. much better,

  1271. the kingdom of God.

  1272. Jesus has invited you

  1273. into it

1274. and he has given you

  1275. a new heart

  1276. so that you can

  1277. increasingly love it

  1278. more than the world.

1279. And there's so much joy

  1280. when we don't have

  1281. to fight that battle

  1282. because our heart

  1283. has actually been changed

  1284. and things that once

  1285. seemed inescapably

  1286. tempting to us

  1287. have lost their power

  1288. because we found

  1289. something greater

  1290. to love

  1291. than that.

  1292. Because the greatest

  1293. love of all,

  1294. sorry,

  1295. that's a Whitney Houston quote,

  1296. let me rephrase that.

  1297. The love

  1298. that transforms us

  1299. and changes us

  1300. is the love

  1301. with which

  1302. Jesus

  1303. has loved us

  1304. and he calls us

  1305. to gaze upon him

  1306. in his beauty

  1307. and his majesty

  1308. and his glory.

  1309. We are transformed

  1310. as we behold him

  1311. and meditate upon him.

  1312. And that precious promise

  1313. that one day

  1314. in Christ

  1315. we will be free.

  1316. we will be free

  1317. from sin,

  1318. we will be free

  1319. from this battle

  1320. that we fight today

  1321. for kingdom,

  1322. sexual righteousness.

  1323. We will be free

  1324. instead

  1325. to feast

  1326. at the wedding table,

  1327. at the banquet

1328. of the Lamb of God.

  1329. We will be

  1330. his bride,

  1331. he will be

  1332. our

  1333. lover,

  1334. the lover

  1335. of our souls

  1336. in ways

  1337. that we can't

  1338. even imagine

  1339. now.

  1340. And friends,

1341. is that not worth it?

  1342. The kingdom of God

  1343. to be with him

  1344. forever.

1345. This is the gospel hope

  1346. and this

  1347. is the call

  1348. to kingdom

  1349. sexual righteousness.

  1350. Let's pray.

  1351. Lord Jesus,

  1352. we come to you

  1353. this morning.

  1354. I just pray.

  1355. Holy Spirit,

  1356. do the work

  1357. you need to do.

  1358. Healing

  1359. some,

  1360. convicting

  1361. some,

  1362. calling

  1363. some.

  1364. Oh Lord,

1365. I pray that we would not

  1366. hide in the darkness.

  1367. But Lord,

  1368. help us.

  1369. Help us to confess

  1370. our sin.

  1371. And help us

  1372. to take hold

  1373. of the life

  1374. that you've given us

  1375. in Jesus.

  1376. Help us to know

  1377. your power

  1378. doing in us

  1379. what we can't do

  1380. for ourselves.

  1381. Help us

  1382. that we might

  1383. live

  1384. distinctly

  1385. for your glory

  1386. in this world.

  1387. We pray this

  1388. in Jesus' name.

  1389. God momencie

  1390. 1

  1391. poetry

  1392. in Jesus' name.

  1393. There we have a

  1394. hope that you will

  1395. transcend the

  1396. high- chatbot and

  1397. langs.
