  1. Good morning.

  2. There is almost no unhappiness so poignant as the unhappiness of an unhappy marriage,

  3. and almost no tragedy so great as the disintegration of what God meant for love and fulfillment

  4. into a non-relationship of bitterness, discord, and despair.

  5. So writes commentator John Stott as he begins his commentary on our passage this morning.

  6. Today we will be looking at something, a topic that for some will be difficult, painful, and personal.

  7. Jesus' view on divorce and marriage.

  8. And it is a weighty one.

  9. It is one filled with many, even conflicting, emotions.

  10. And I, as your pastor, stand here with not a little fear and trepidation in preaching about this.

  11. My hope in prayer is that I will bring clarity and compassion to this topic.

  12. My hope is that we might not merely have an academic discussion, nor merely an emotional response,

  13. but that the glory of the kingdom of God might shine through this passage to us this morning

  14. and might bring healing and hope into your lives.

  15. We are continuing in our sermon series in the Sermon on the Mount this morning.

  16. It is page 760 in your pew Bible.

  17. We are looking at Matthew chapter 5, verses 31 to 32.

    Matthew 5:31–32

  18. And as you turn there so we can look at it together, just let me remind you,

  19. the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is painting a picture of the kingdom that He is proclaiming

  20. that He is going to bring and that it is at hand.

  21. The kingdom that He is, our Savior King, will be establishing through His life and death and resurrection.

  22. And the immediate context of this verse is in a series of applications after verses 17 through 20,

  23. where Jesus said, I am the fulfillment of the law and the prophets,

  24. and now I want you to obey Me as I instruct you about how to live in this kingdom driven by the gospel.

  25. Verse 20 there says, you must have a righteousness that is greater than the Pharisees.

  26. You must have a distinctively Christian view of these topics.

  27. And so with this, let's ask God's help as we look at God's Word this morning.

  28. Lord, there are some whose heart rates just jumped, whose blood pressure rose because of what we're talking about this morning,

  29. because these things are deep and meaningful.

  30. Lord, I pray that Your comfort and Your peace and Your truth would be with us.

  31. Lord, help us together to sit under the teaching of Your Word.

  32. Let it refine us.

  33. Lord, perhaps this morning You will bring conviction of sin.

  34. Perhaps this morning You will bring a healing balm and comfort.

  35. Certainly, Lord, this morning may we be reminded of hope

  36. and of Your great love with which You have loved us.

  37. Lord, I ask for Your help this morning

  38. that I might speak the words that You want me to speak

  39. and that together we might see the truth of Your Word.

  40. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  41. Amen.

  42. So Matthew, chapter 5, starting in verse 31.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  43. It was also said, whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.

  44. But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality,

  45. makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

  46. My friends, as we look at this passage this morning, it's fairly straightforward.

  47. Jesus calls us to uphold a distinctively kingdom view of marriage and divorce.

  48. What does that look like?

  49. Well, let's look at it together.

  50. I think we're going to look at it in three stages.

  51. Here's your outline if you're an outline person.

  52. We're going to look at the context, both cultural and biblical, of this passage.

  53. Secondly, we're going to look at the content of Jesus' call, the prohibition and the exception.

  54. And then we're going to look at the gospel glory that comes in the call of Jesus.

  55. So first, the context of Jesus' call to us, cultural and biblical.

  56. Verse 31, it was also said, whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.

  57. Jesus is referring to and quoting what the Pharisees would have based their view on divorce and remarriage on

  58. in Deuteronomy 24, verse 1, where it says,

    Deuteronomy 24:1

  59. if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her,

  60. and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of the house,

  61. and it goes on.

  62. It's a longer passage.

  63. We're not going to look at all of the details,

  64. but what you want to see clearly is that there was established in the Old Testament

  65. a basis of divorce for, quote-unquote, some indecency,

  66. and we will just explore that in just a minute.

  67. This divorce required the husband to give the wife who he was divorcing a certificate

  68. that would authenticate this so that it was known that she was not merely abandoning the marriage,

  69. but that she was free then from the constraints and free to remarry

  70. because in the ancient Near East, a woman without a husband and a home

  71. was in a very perilous and vulnerable state,

  72. and so there was a protection that came from this.

  73. It also served, if you read through Deuteronomy 24 carefully,

  74. it served as a warning that when he relinquished claim on this marriage by divorcing her,

  75. there was no going back.

  76. This was a permanent action.

  77. You can read through Deuteronomy 24 more if you want to see it,

  78. but this was the biblical basis upon which the first century Pharisees understood marriage and divorce.

  79. Now, in the first century, there were two schools of Pharisees.

  80. There were the followers of Rabbi Hillel and the followers of Rabbi Shammai,

  81. and both of them saw marriage as a covenant with promises to provide food and clothing,

  82. love and fidelity, that is, faithfulness in sexual activity to the marriage covenant,

  83. and they saw that if there was a violation of these things,

  84. there was some grounds for divorce, for they would break that covenant agreement.

  85. Both saw that remarriage was possible when a divorce was given.

  86. So this was a common first century understanding.

  87. Now, there was a major disagreement between these two schools,

  88. for the Hillel school thought that some matters of indecency

  89. actually meant any matters or indecency.

  90. And so, if a wife burned the toast, or if the husband saw a woman that he found more attractive than his wife,

  91. he could divorce her because clearly that was grounds.

  92. There was something there that he found unacceptable.

  93. The Shammai, on the other hand, had a much more narrow view of understanding

  94. that this was on the grounds of moral unfaithfulness or infidelity

  95. in the way that we typically think of it with sexual activity some way outside of marriage.

  96. In fact, they were strong enough that they said,

  97. if you commit this, then the husband must divorce the wife on that grounds

  98. because of the broken covenant agreement.

  99. Now, here's the third interesting historical piece that comes together.

  100. In the first century, over 90% of divorces were granted by rabbis in the school of Hillel.

  101. 90% over 90%.

  102. That meant that everybody went to the easy lenient judges if they wanted to get a divorce.

  103. Right?

  104. And the Shammai school said,

  105. well, we don't judge whether the legitimacy of the divorce is there or not,

  106. so they're all legitimate.

  107. So, remarriage, for anybody, divorce, for any reason,

  108. functionally, was the first century culture in which Jesus is speaking.

  109. The Jewish context in the first century was a for-any-cause divorce culture.

  110. Friends, it's not hard to see that we are not so different in our culture today.

  111. The no-fault divorce is firmly planted in American culture and law at this point

  112. without the misogyny of the first century where the husband was initiating it

  113. and the wife was the victim of it.

  114. But we've given more freedom, so anybody can do that.

  115. I'm not sure that's progress.

  116. It's an interesting question.

  117. Our culture today often views marriage as contractual, not covenantal.

  118. We see it as a 50-50.

  119. You do your part, I'll do my part, and hopefully that'll get to something worthwhile.

  120. It is a mutual benefit as long as it continues to be mutually beneficial.

  121. And as soon as it's not, we abandon it.

  122. It's a shockingly self-centered view of marriage.

  123. It's shocking to think about marriage as something that is for my happiness,

  124. and if I'm not happy, I will leave it.

  125. To lay it bare, we end up using marriage for self-fulfillment.

  126. This is not God's view, as we will see in a minute.

  127. And even when we are married, we find ourselves saying,

  128. I think I've grown apart.

  129. We're going in different directions.

  130. I've developed new interests.

  131. And this gives us, it seems, grounds to abandon the divorce.

  132. So Jesus speaks not only into a first-century context of for any reason,

  133. but in the 21st-century context of no-fault divorce.

  134. Jesus, however, is not merely speaking into that cultural context.

  135. He is also speaking with the weight of a biblical narrative about marriage

  136. that we need to understand for us to get these two verses clearly.

  137. Turning to Matthew 19, because if you want to turn there,

  138. we're going to spend a few minutes there,

  139. because in Matthew 19, Jesus ends with a discussion with the Pharisees,

  140. with almost the exact same words he says here.

  141. But he has a much longer conversation with them,

  142. because the Pharisees come in an attempt to trap him and say,

  143. can you get divorced for any cause?

  144. And they're trying to provoke him so that one of the two schools

  145. will be angry with Jesus for how he responds.

  146. And Jesus responds by saying,

  147. if you're asking about the grounds of divorce,

  148. you're in fact asking the wrong question.

  149. When they ask him this question about,

  150. for what reason can we divorce someone,

  151. Jesus says,

  152. do you remember where it began?

  153. Do you remember what God established in creation?

  154. Go back to the beginning of what God intended.

  155. And so he goes back to Genesis,

  156. and he says,

  157. let us make man in our image,

  158. male and female he made them,

  159. and let them be fruitful and multiply.

  160. And then he goes on in chapter 2,

  161. where he retells the story of creation

  162. in a way that brings man and women together

  163. to be partners in a marriage.

  164. When Adam wakes up and sees Eve,

  165. and he says,

  166. this now is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh.

  167. And says,

  168. therefore a man shall leave his father and mother

  169. and join to his wife,

  170. and they shall become one.

  171. And in this picture in the Old Testament,

  172. there's this mysterious but real union

  173. of two lives becoming in God's eyes,

  174. and in fact a oneness of body, mind, spirit, and life

  175. shared together that is meant to be

  176. permanent and exclusive.

  177. The language of leaving and cleaving in Genesis 2

  178. is covenantal language

  179. of this wholehearted agreement

  180. and commitment to the other party.

  181. This is the basis of the traditional church vows

  182. that maybe many of us know,

  183. to have and to hold from this day forward

  184. for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,

  185. in sickness and in health,

  186. to love and to cherish until death do us part,

  187. forsaking all others.

  188. This is the marriage covenant.

  189. This is the vows.

  190. And this is a good creation pattern

  191. that Jesus points us to.

  192. And he says,

  193. this is a goodness that's made

  194. not just for the church,

  195. like baptism or communion,

  196. but for the whole world.

  197. And fascinatingly,

  198. there are sociological studies out there

  199. that say it's true.

  200. Marriage really is good.

  201. As broken and as difficult as it is,

  202. it is actually better where there is marriage

  203. than where there is not.

  204. So Jesus says,

  205. from the beginning,

  206. there was a goodness

  207. that you need to be considering

  208. before you start talking about divorce.

  209. And so in verses 8 and 9 of Matthew 19,

  210. he says,

  211. because of the hardness of heart,

  212. Moses allowed you to divorce your wives.

  213. But from the beginning,

  214. it was not so.

  215. Because we know that in the original creation,

  216. this marriage was a beautiful thing.

  217. But then as sin entered the world,

  218. sin entered marriage

  219. and made it hard

  220. and made it difficult.

  221. And you can read through the Old Testament,

  222. and there is case after case after case

  223. of marriages

  224. that violate the covenant,

  225. that don't show the beauty of it.

  226. Over and over again,

  227. you see consequences of broken marriages

  228. where they weren't always permanent and exclusive.

  229. Jesus says,

  230. why then does the New Testament give this?

  231. Because of sin.

  232. Because hardness of heart does enter in.

  233. And there are times when divorce may need

  234. to be accommodated or allowed.

  235. Remember, though,

  236. that divorce was never commanded

  237. in the Old Testament,

  238. in contradiction to the Shammai school

  239. that said that you must.

  240. But it was always an accommodation

  241. where rather than provision,

  242. companionship, union, fidelity,

  243. there was abandonment, brokenness.

  244. So in this,

  245. in responding in Matthew 19

  246. to the question of the Pharisees,

  247. Jesus upholds a beautiful picture of marriage

  248. and says,

  249. this is where we need to start

  250. as we're talking about these things.

  251. So friends,

  252. the first thing I want to say

  253. to us this morning

  254. as we're talking about this passage is,

  255. how can we grow

  256. in our faithfulness to marriage?

  257. How can we hold fast

  258. to our spouse?

  259. And listen,

  260. it's not easy.

  261. Every married person here

  262. will tell you

  263. there's lots of wonderful things

  264. about marriage,

  265. but it is hard work

  266. when two sinners

  267. live on top of each other

  268. every day,

  269. all day.

  270. When they entwine their lives

  271. irrevocably

  272. in the covenant of marriage,

  273. you're stuck.

  274. And it's hard.

  275. And you realize

  276. how sinful you are

  277. and how selfish you are

  278. and how unkind you can be

  279. and how easily you imagine

  280. that there might be

  281. something else out there

  282. that might be better,

  283. that the grass might be greener

  284. on some other side.

  285. There is great blessing

  286. and great opportunity

  287. for growth

  288. in marriage,

  289. but it's worth fighting for.

  290. If you are married,

  291. fight for your marriage.

  292. Be defensive in it.

  293. Guard your heart

  294. and guard your marriage.

  295. Don't give in

  296. to the temptation

  297. to wander

  298. with your eyes

  299. or with your imagination

  300. or with your actions.

  301. When you are tempted

  302. to long for another,

  303. when you see someone else

  304. starting to fill those spaces

  305. in your heart

  306. that your spouse needs to fit,

  307. you need to flee.

  308. You need to run away

  309. like Joseph

  310. running from Potiphar's wife

  311. saying,

  312. how could I sin against God

  313. in this way?

  314. In your relationships,

  315. make sure that you put

  316. your spouse first

  317. before others.

  318. If you're married today,

  319. I want to ask you,

  320. how are you investing

  321. in your marriage?

  322. How are you making time

  323. and heart space?

  324. How are you creating

  325. the opportunities

  326. to share joys

  327. and sorrows together?

  328. How are you seeking

  329. to lay down your life

  330. to serve the other?

  331. To love and to cherish

  332. till death do us part.

  333. And listen,

  334. if you're here

  335. and you're single,

  336. what is your call

  337. in this?

  338. First,

  339. it's to see

  340. the original goodness

  341. of marriage.

  342. I know in our church

  343. some of you

  344. are 20-somethings

  345. who've not been married

  346. and maybe you're

  347. looking around

  348. and wondering,

  349. do I even want that?

  350. Because it seems

  351. pretty broken.

  352. It seems really hard.

  353. Right?

  354. Some of you

  355. are later in life.

  356. I know some of you

  357. have been divorced.

  358. Some of you

  359. are widows

  360. and widowers.

  361. Some of you

  362. have never been married.

  363. First and foremost,

  364. uphold,

  365. uphold

  366. the ideal of marriage

  367. that God has called

  368. us to value

  369. as a church.

  370. Think about how

  371. you can encourage

  372. your married friends

  373. to stay married

  374. and to love

  375. and to serve them

  376. in the ways

  377. that you have.

  378. But also,

  379. take advantage now.

  380. Maybe God will call you

  381. to marriage in the future.

  382. Prepare for that now.

  383. Learn the hard work

  384. of relationships.

  385. Learn how to resolve

  386. conflict with your roommates,

  387. with your coworkers,

  388. with your bosses.

  389. Learn how to serve others

  390. selflessly.

  391. Not selfishly.

  392. Develop the basic skills

  393. that God will want

  394. to call you into

  395. if God calls you

  396. into marriage.

  397. And know,

  398. and we'll come back

  399. to this at the end,

  400. know that at the end

  401. of the day,

  402. friends,

  403. being married

  404. or being single,

  405. these are not

  406. the pinnacles of life.

  407. They are contexts

  408. in which God

  409. has called you

  410. to live out

  411. your calling

  412. to follow Christ

  413. and to let Him

  414. be the lover

  415. of your soul

  416. and the bridegroom

  417. who loves you

  418. with an everlasting love

  419. and for you

  420. to respond to Him

  421. with love

  422. and devotion

  423. and fidelity.

  424. So marriage,

  425. it's a good thing.

  426. It's what God

  427. has given us.

  428. And Jesus brings

  429. this whole vision.

  430. He's assuming it

  431. as He's teaching

  432. these verses

  433. in 31 and 32.

  434. So here we go.

  435. Let's look now.

  436. Having looked

  437. at the context,

  438. let's look at the content

  439. of Jesus' call.

  440. This is in verse 32.

  441. This is following

  442. the pattern that Jesus

  443. has been doing

  444. in this section.

  445. You have heard it said,

  446. but I say to you.

  447. Jesus is taking it further.

  448. He's saying this is now

  449. the kingdom imprint

  450. on how to handle

  451. these issues.

  452. And He says,

  453. but I say to you

  454. that everyone

  455. who divorces his wife

  456. except on the ground

  457. of sexual immorality

  458. makes her commit adultery

  459. and whoever marries

  460. a divorced woman

  461. commits adultery.

  462. There are two parts

  463. of what Jesus

  464. is saying here

  465. and I want them

  466. both to carry

  467. the appropriate weight.

  468. There is a strong

  469. prohibition

  470. and then there is

  471. an exception clause.

  472. The strong prohibition

  473. is this.

  474. If you take out

  475. the exception clause,

  476. if you ever were

  477. a grammar nerd,

  478. this is a subordinate clause.

  479. So you just remove

  480. the subordinate clause

  481. and here's the main clause

  482. of the sentence.

  483. Don't commit adultery.

  484. Do not divorce

  485. because you are

  486. committing adultery.

  487. Now that's a very stark

  488. way of saying it

  489. but that's what Jesus is,

  490. that is the main phrase here.

  491. Don't divorce

  492. because it's a violation

  493. of this vision of marriage

  494. that God has given us.

  495. Interestingly,

  496. when you look at Luke

  497. and when you look at Mark

  498. in Mark 10 verses 11 and 12

    Mark 10:11

  499. and in Luke 16, 18,

  500. they both summarize it

  501. just by saying this.

  502. If you divorce,

  503. you commit adultery.

  504. Now, the assumption in this

  505. is that everyone remarried

  506. in the first century.

  507. That men couldn't live

  508. without a wife

  509. in the first century

  510. and that women were vulnerable

  511. and unprotected

  512. and so they needed to remarry

  513. in order to be a part

  514. of a household

  515. to be provided for.

  516. That was a cultural assumption

  517. that Jesus is making.

  518. So he equates divorce

  519. with adultery

  520. because there's a remarriage

  521. assumed in that.

  522. Jesus is saying,

  523. because marriage

  524. is permanent

  525. and exclusive,

  526. when you divorce

  527. and remarry,

  528. you are committing adultery.

  529. Maybe it's helpful

  530. to think about it this way.

  531. Sometimes we think about

  532. divorce as

  533. we want to change

  534. our context.

  535. It's kind of like

  536. we want to change

  537. our clothes

  538. or we want to move

  539. to a new house

  540. or get a new job.

  541. We want to change

  542. the context

  543. in which we're living

  544. our daily lives.

  545. Tim Keller says,

  546. divorce is better thought of

  547. as an amputation

  548. because God has brought

  549. two to become one

  550. and if you are divorcing,

  551. you are breaking,

  552. you are rending

  553. this oneness

  554. like you'd have to cut off

  555. limbs

  556. to do so.

  557. It is,

  558. as the old phrase says,

  559. tearing asunder

  560. what God has joined

  561. together.

  562. We need to let this sink in

  563. because our culture

  564. just doesn't think about it

  565. this way.

  566. There is so much divorce

  567. that we've become

  568. numb to the severity

  569. that Jesus puts

  570. on what divorce is.

  571. Divorce violates

  572. the original design

  573. of marriage

  574. and broadly

  575. it should not be so.

  576. Having let that sink in,

  577. Jesus then says,

  578. except for

  579. there is a provision,

  580. there's an understanding

  581. that there are

  582. some places

  583. except for

  584. in a context

  585. of sexual immorality,

  586. there is then

  587. a place for divorce.

  588. Why would that be?

  589. Well, what is

  590. sexual immorality?

  591. Some of your versions

  592. may read

  593. that it's

  594. marital unfaithfulness.

  595. It's a very poor

  596. translation of the word.

  597. The word that's used

  598. there is a much

  599. broader word.

  600. It's broadly

  601. sexual immorality

  602. of all sorts of kinds.

  603. In other parts

  604. of the Bible

  605. it would include

  606. things like

  607. homosexuality

  608. and bestiality

  609. and incest

  610. and all sorts

  611. of things.

  612. So, let's just,

  613. let's assume

  614. it's a broad term

  615. here, right?

  616. Any sexual activity

  617. outside of the

  618. healthy and proper

  619. boundaries of husband

  620. and wife.

  621. And the logic

  622. behind this

  623. seems to be

  624. that where

  625. sexual unfaithfulness

  626. has been,

  627. the covenant

  628. has been fundamentally

  629. broken by that

  630. violation.

  631. And because of that

  632. it says divorce

  633. could be allowed

  634. in those contexts.

  635. And we need to

  636. understand that

  637. it's,

  638. that as we look

  639. broader,

  640. as we pan out

  641. a little bit

  642. from just this verse,

  643. we see that

  644. in fact

  645. there's another

  646. place in Scripture

  647. in 1 Corinthians 7

  648. that suggests

  649. that Jesus

  650. isn't making

  651. a comprehensive

  652. statement on

  653. all the grounds

  654. by which divorce

  655. may happen.

  656. But he's giving

  657. one very important

  658. one.

  659. Remember the

  660. rabbi said

  661. food,

  662. clothing,

  663. companionship,

  664. fidelity.

  665. And he was

  666. dealing with

  667. the fidelity

  668. one as he

  669. was addressing

  670. this in this

  671. context.

  672. But what we do

  673. see is that

  674. in 1 Corinthians

  675. 7, 15

  676. Paul addresses

  677. an abandonment

  678. of companionship.

  679. This is where

  680. in the context

  681. of 1 Corinthians

  682. believing,

  683. people who have

  684. come to faith

  685. in Christ

  686. who are now

  687. married to someone

  688. who's not a

  689. believer,

  690. the believer

  691. is thinking

  692. wait,

  693. am I unequally

  694. yoked?

  695. Am I married

  696. to someone

  697. who doesn't

  698. share my

  699. faith commitment?

  700. And if that's

  701. true,

  702. should I

  703. abandon the

  704. marriage so

  705. that I can

  706. go marry

  707. someone who

  708. shares my

  709. faith commitment

  710. now?

  711. And Paul says

  712. no,

  713. you're married

  714. to this

  715. person,

  716. stay married

  717. to them

  718. and love

  719. them.

  720. But then he

  721. goes on

  722. and he says

  723. but if

  724. your unbelieving

  725. spouse says

  726. you know what,

  727. I'm done

  728. with this,

  729. you're not

  730. the same

  731. person I

  732. married,

  733. I am not

  734. here anymore,

  735. and that

  736. person says

  737. I'm gone,

  738. then you

  739. as a

  740. believer,

  741. that marriage

  742. covenant has

  743. been broken

  744. by that

  745. abandonment.

  746. And so you

  747. are then

  748. free,

  749. and I

  750. believe that

  751. freedom is

  752. freedom to

  753. remarry in a

  754. similar way

  755. because the

  756. covenant has

  757. been broken

  758. in that way.

  759. Okay?

  760. So this is

  761. how we

  762. understand

  763. divorce and

  764. remarriage

  765. at

  766. trinity,

  767. or divorce.

  768. I want to

  769. speak briefly

  770. to remarriage,

  771. and I'll

  772. talk a little

  773. bit more

  774. about this

  775. in application

  776. in just a

  777. minute,

  778. but recognize

  779. that divorcing

  780. in the spirit

  781. of the age

  782. today,

  783. divorcing for

  784. any cause

  785. whatsoever,

  786. puts you

  787. exactly in the

  788. crosshairs of

  789. what Jesus

  790. is saying.

  791. If you

  792. divorce and

  793. then you

  794. remarry,

  795. and that

  796. divorce has

  797. not been

  798. legitimate,

  799. you are

  800. violating

  801. your original

  802. covenant

  803. by marrying

  804. someone else.

  805. Now,

  806. we'll talk

  807. about how

  808. to deal

  809. with that

  810. in a

  811. minute,

  812. but that's

  813. what Jesus

  814. is saying,

  815. and he

  816. challenges

  817. us how

  818. we think

  819. about it.

  820. So what

  821. then,

  822. how then

  823. do we

  824. respond?

  825. First,

  826. it means

  827. we should

  828. have hearts

  829. to stay

  830. faithful to

  831. our marriage,

  832. not to

  833. ask how

  834. can I

  835. get out,

  836. but how

  837. could I

  838. invest and

  839. build?

  840. Not for

  841. what reason

  842. can I

  843. divorce,

  844. but how

  845. can we

  846. stay

  847. together?

  848. Some

  849. people ask,

  850. if a box

  851. can be

  852. checked,

  853. he committed

  854. adultery,

  855. she was

  856. unfaithful,

  857. does that

  858. mean I

  859. can just

  860. go ahead

  861. with divorce?

  862. And I

  863. think as

  864. we look

  865. at this,

  866. Jesus would

  867. recommend a

  868. different

  869. pattern,

  870. a different

  871. approach,

  872. because he

  873. would say

  874. first,

  875. wait your

  876. marriage

  877. through the

  878. eyes of

  879. redemption

  880. and seek

  881. for

  882. reconciliation

  883. first.

  884. Now listen

  885. carefully,

  886. I do not

  887. mean a

  888. cheap

  889. papering

  890. over,

  891. I do

  892. not mean

  893. a quick

  894. just forgive

  895. me,

  896. we'll

  897. get back

  898. to normal,

  899. no problems.

  900. The work

  901. of repair

  902. in times

  903. of betrayal

  904. and unfaithfulness

  905. is massive

  906. and huge,

  907. and the

  908. rebuilding

  909. of trust

  910. will be

  911. a year

  912. long or

  913. life

  914. long project,

  915. but it's

  916. worth it.

  917. Explore

  918. it,

  919. seek

  920. it,

  921. pursue

  922. it,

  923. and in

  924. the midst

  925. of it,

  926. be careful

  927. with your

  928. own heart

  929. that you

  930. don't allow

  931. bitterness

  932. and contempt

  933. to be the

  934. fruit of

  935. the hurt.

  936. There is

  937. appropriate

  938. grieving,

  939. there is

  940. appropriate

  941. setting of

  942. boundaries and

  943. even consequences,

  944. but seek

  945. to rebuild

  946. the marriage

  947. first.

  948. And in

  949. that,

  950. my second

  951. advice is

  952. to be

  953. patient,

  954. not rash,

  955. and to

  956. give the

  957. Lord time

  958. to work.

  959. Now again,

  960. here's a

  961. major caveat,

  962. not to

  963. stay in an

  964. abusive

  965. situation

  966. where you

  967. are in

  968. danger.

  969. If you

  970. are in

  971. a dangerous

  972. situation,

  973. it is

  974. right for

  975. you to

  976. remove

  977. yourself

  978. from that

  979. and to

  980. seek

  981. appropriate

  982. help

  983. from the

  984. church,

  985. from the

  986. police,

  987. from

  988. counselors,

  989. wherever

  990. it is

  991. needed.

  992. Reconciliation

  993. can only

  994. happen in

  995. the context

  996. of physical

  997. safety,

  998. and that

  999. would be a

  1000. prerequisite of

  1001. any pursuit.

  1002. But friends,

  1003. give it

  1004. time.

  1005. Wait on

  1006. the Lord.

  1007. Wait on

  1008. the Lord to

  1009. work in

  1010. your heart

  1011. to process

  1012. the hurt

  1013. if you're

  1014. the betrayed

  1015. spouse.

  1016. Wait on

  1017. the Lord to

  1018. work in

  1019. the heart

  1020. of the

  1021. offending

  1022. spouse for

  1023. them to

  1024. see the

  1025. depth of

  1026. their sin

  1027. so that

  1028. their

  1029. repentance

  1030. will be

  1031. real and

  1032. deep and

  1033. genuine.

  1034. Separation

  1035. might be

  1036. an appropriate

  1037. step, but

  1038. for a season

  1039. and with a

  1040. purpose, not

  1041. as an off-ramp,

  1042. but as a

  1043. purpose of

  1044. saying we

  1045. need space

  1046. to do our

  1047. own work so

  1048. that we can

  1049. try to come

  1050. back together

  1051. and reconcile.

  1052. Know that it

  1053. can take

  1054. time for

  1055. this to

  1056. happen.

  1057. Thirdly, do

  1058. this in

  1059. community.

  1060. Friends, it

  1061. is so hard

  1062. in the midst

  1063. of these

  1064. things because

  1065. shame rises

  1066. up on

  1067. every side.

  1068. The betrayer

  1069. feels shame

  1070. and they just

  1071. want to hide

  1072. and they

  1073. don't want to

  1074. tell anybody

  1075. that they've

  1076. done this

  1077. thing that

  1078. is so

  1079. hurtful to

  1080. their spouse.

  1081. The betrayed

  1082. spouse often

  1083. feels guilty.

  1084. What did I

  1085. do?

  1086. Did I deserve

  1087. this?

  1088. How could I

  1089. have done

  1090. better?

  1091. And isolation

  1092. is our

  1093. response so

  1094. often to

  1095. these things.

  1096. Friends, fight

  1097. that response.

  1098. Take it to

  1099. your friends.

  1100. Bring it to

  1101. the elders

  1102. and to the

  1103. older members

  1104. of our church

  1105. so that we

  1106. can walk

  1107. with you

  1108. through this.

  1109. Find friends

  1110. who won't

  1111. merely be

  1112. your cheerleaders

  1113. and say you

  1114. were wronged,

  1115. but who will

  1116. speak grace

  1117. and truth

  1118. to you,

  1119. who will help

  1120. you see your

  1121. own hearts.

  1122. And friends,

  1123. then, if

  1124. having involved

  1125. others,

  1126. pursued

  1127. reconciliation

  1128. with patience,

  1129. when it is

  1130. clear that

  1131. the other

  1132. person has a

  1133. hard heart

  1134. and is

  1135. unwilling,

  1136. unable

  1137. to take

  1138. the steps

  1139. to rebuild,

  1140. then there

  1141. is an

  1142. exception.

  1143. then there

  1144. is a

  1145. place to

  1146. say this

  1147. marriage has

  1148. been broken

  1149. and this

  1150. person who

  1151. I'm married

  1152. to has

  1153. hardened their

  1154. heart to

  1155. not rebuild

  1156. it.

  1157. This is

  1158. where there

  1159. is freedom

  1160. and it is a

  1161. real freedom.

  1162. There is a

  1163. real sense

  1164. of this

  1165. marriage is

  1166. done in

  1167. these contexts.

  1168. but friends,

  1169. let me say

  1170. this,

  1171. even when we

  1172. get to

  1173. that point,

  1174. no marriage

  1175. should end

  1176. in divorce

  1177. without broken

  1178. heartedness

  1179. in the heart

  1180. of a

  1181. Christian.

  1182. Even if

  1183. you feel

  1184. relief from

  1185. abuse or

  1186. serial infidelity

  1187. or emotional

  1188. hurt and

  1189. pain,

  1190. even when

  1191. it is the

  1192. appropriate

  1193. step within

  1194. the scriptural

  1195. boundaries,

  1196. if you have

  1197. not grieved,

  1198. you're not

  1199. ready to

  1200. divorce.

  1201. There should

  1202. be brokenness

  1203. and mourning

  1204. for what

  1205. God designed

  1206. to be good,

  1207. even when

  1208. it is allowed

  1209. and it is

  1210. an appropriate

  1211. step.

  1212. Now,

  1213. there are

  1214. many situations

  1215. that I

  1216. can't address

  1217. specifically.

  1218. What constitutes

  1219. sexual immorality

  1220. or abandonment?

  1221. What about

  1222. pornography?

  1223. What about

  1224. emotional abuse?

  1225. What about

  1226. failure to

  1227. provide?

  1228. What about

  1229. a spouse

  1230. who says

  1231. one thing

  1232. but does

  1233. the other?

  1234. Friends,

  1235. this is where

  1236. time and

  1237. discernment

  1238. and community

  1239. are all part

  1240. of God's

  1241. design to

  1242. help you

  1243. walk through

  1244. what that

  1245. looks like.

  1246. thing.

  1247. I do want

  1248. to address

  1249. one other

  1250. situation

  1251. that some

  1252. of you

  1253. may be

  1254. thinking

  1255. about

  1256. or

  1257. maybe

  1258. in

  1259. and

  1260. that

  1261. is

  1262. you may be

  1263. sitting here

  1264. this morning

  1265. and you

  1266. have

  1267. divorced

  1268. and as you

  1269. look back

  1270. on it

  1271. you think

  1272. I didn't

  1273. divorce

  1274. under these

  1275. conditions.

  1276. I didn't

  1277. divorce in

  1278. the spirit

  1279. that God

  1280. would have

  1281. wanted me

  1282. to.

  1283. What do I

  1284. do now?

  1285. Maybe you're

  1286. married again,

  1287. maybe you're

  1288. not.

  1289. Here are a few

  1290. thoughts for you

  1291. who are

  1292. divorced

  1293. and are

  1294. recognizing

  1295. that it's

  1296. not God's

  1297. plan.

  1298. It wasn't

  1299. part of

  1300. what God

  1301. would want.

  1302. First,

  1303. recognize that

  1304. you can

  1305. repent.

  1306. Repent

  1307. of the

  1308. divorce.

  1309. Recognize

  1310. that it

  1311. was done

  1312. in sin

  1313. if it

  1314. was.

  1315. There is

  1316. forgiveness

  1317. for you.

  1318. Grant

  1319. Osborne

  1320. in another

  1321. commentary

  1322. says,

  1323. the present

  1324. tense

  1325. commit

  1326. adultery

  1327. in no way

  1328. means that

  1329. a couple

  1330. will live

  1331. in perpetual

  1332. adultery.

  1333. It is not

  1334. the unpardonable

  1335. sin.

  1336. It means

  1337. that the

  1338. present act

  1339. and consummation

  1340. of remarriage

  1341. is adulterous.

  1342. The couple

  1343. should admit

  1344. that and

  1345. then begin

  1346. to live

  1347. by God's

  1348. standards.

  1349. So this

  1350. is a

  1351. recognition.

  1352. If you

  1353. have remarried,

  1354. then you

  1355. should stay

  1356. in that

  1357. marriage.

  1358. And that

  1359. is the

  1360. marriage

  1361. that God

  1362. has called

  1363. you to

  1364. in a

  1365. redemptive

  1366. way,

  1367. live out

  1368. the calling

  1369. that He's

  1370. called you

  1371. to,

  1372. to uphold

  1373. the beautiful

  1374. picture of

  1375. marriage

  1376. that we

  1377. talked about

  1378. earlier.

  1379. So if you're

  1380. remarried,

  1381. stay there.

  1382. If you're

  1383. not remarried

  1384. and your

  1385. spouse,

  1386. your ex-spouse

  1387. is not

  1388. remarried,

  1389. consider

  1390. reconciliation

  1391. if it would

  1392. be possible.

  1393. It may or

  1394. may not be.

  1395. And it may

  1396. be that in

  1397. even exploring

  1398. that you

  1399. realize

  1400. wherever we

  1401. were then,

  1402. where we

  1403. are now,

  1404. is irreconcilable.

  1405. That is

  1406. possible.

  1407. You can't

  1408. control that.

  1409. But at

  1410. least consider

  1411. it.

  1412. Friends,

  1413. I say all

  1414. these things

  1415. with fear

  1416. and trembling

  1417. because I

  1418. know some

  1419. of you have

  1420. walked this

  1421. road already.

  1422. And what I

  1423. want you to

  1424. know is

  1425. that Jesus

  1426. sees you

  1427. where you

  1428. are.

  1429. Some of you

  1430. have been

  1431. deeply

  1432. betrayed

  1433. and hurt.

  1434. Some of you

  1435. have perpetrated

  1436. harm

  1437. on others

  1438. and have

  1439. been unfaithful.

  1440. And some

  1441. of you are

  1442. in marriages

  1443. now,

  1444. but you're

  1445. at a place

  1446. where you're

  1447. wondering,

  1448. how can I

  1449. get out?

  1450. the gospel

  1451. is our

  1452. only hope.

  1453. You see,

  1454. the gospel

  1455. of glory

  1456. and the

  1457. call of

  1458. Jesus,

  1459. this is our

  1460. third point,

  1461. is that

  1462. God

  1463. has called

  1464. us to a

  1465. marriage

  1466. that is

  1467. even greater

  1468. than the

  1469. marriage

  1470. between a

  1471. man and

  1472. a woman.

  1473. God,

  1474. in the

  1475. Old Testament,

  1476. God uses

  1477. marriage language

  1478. to describe

  1479. the relationship

  1480. between him

  1481. and his

  1482. people.

  1483. God is a

  1484. loving,

  1485. faithful husband

  1486. who pursues

  1487. his people.

  1488. And do you

  1489. know what

  1490. Israel is?

  1491. An unfaithful

  1492. bride who

  1493. abandons the

  1494. covenant to

  1495. go after other

  1496. lovers,

  1497. who worships

  1498. other gods

  1499. and serves

  1500. other masters,

  1501. who

  1502. devotes

  1503. themselves

  1504. to others

  1505. rather than

  1506. God himself.

  1507. This is what

  1508. was read

  1509. earlier by

  1510. Carolyn,

  1511. Jeremiah 2.2.

  1512. Go and

  1513. proclaim in

  1514. the hearing

  1515. of Jerusalem.

  1516. Thus says

  1517. the Lord,

  1518. I remember

  1519. the devotion

  1520. of your

  1521. youth,

  1522. your love

  1523. as a

  1524. bride,

  1525. how you

  1526. followed me

  1527. in the

  1528. wilderness

  1529. in a

  1530. land not

  1531. sown.

  1532. Jeremiah

  1533. goes on

  1534. in chapter

  1535. 3,

  1536. verse 20,

  1537. and he

  1538. indicts

  1539. Israel.

  1540. Surely

  1541. as a

  1542. treacherous

  1543. wife leaves

  1544. her husband,

  1545. so you

  1546. have been

  1547. treacherous

  1548. to me,

  1549. O house

  1550. of Israel,

  1551. declares

  1552. the Lord.

  1553. In fact,

  1554. the abandonment

  1555. of the

  1556. covenant

  1557. relationship

  1558. was so

  1559. deep that

  1560. God brought

  1561. the judgment

  1562. of exile

  1563. upon Israel,

  1564. and he

  1565. uses in

  1566. Jeremiah 3.8

  1567. divorce language.

  1568. She,

  1569. and this

  1570. is referring

  1571. to Judah,

  1572. this is

  1573. technical,

  1574. the southern

  1575. kingdom

  1576. watching the

  1577. northern

  1578. kingdom.

  1579. The northern

  1580. kingdom had

  1581. already been

  1582. judged for

  1583. its unfaithfulness.

  1584. The southern

  1585. kingdom is

  1586. wondering,

  1587. what do we

  1588. do?

  1589. And Jeremiah

  1590. says,

  1591. she saw

  1592. that for

  1593. all the

  1594. adulteries

  1595. of that

  1596. faithless

  1597. one,

  1598. Israel,

  1599. I had

  1600. sent her

  1601. away with

  1602. a decree

  1603. of divorce.

  1604. Yet her

  1605. treacherous

  1606. sister,

  1607. Judah,

  1608. did not

  1609. fear,

  1610. but she

  1611. too went

  1612. and played

  1613. the whore.

  1614. Old

  1615. Testament

  1616. language

  1617. is so

  1618. poignant,

  1619. isn't it?

  1620. But along

  1621. with this

  1622. thread of

  1623. unfaithfulness,

  1624. we see

  1625. unfaithfulness

  1626. by God's

  1627. people,

  1628. we see

  1629. the thread

  1630. of God's

  1631. redemptive

  1632. faithfulness

  1633. for his

  1634. people.

  1635. In grace,

  1636. he pursues

  1637. us in

  1638. our unfaithfulness

  1639. and promises

  1640. a restored

  1641. relationship.

  1642. So in

  1643. Isaiah 62

    Isaiah 62:3–5

  1644. verses 3

  1645. through 5,

  1646. looking ahead

  1647. past the

  1648. exile,

  1649. God is

  1650. saying,

  1651. there will

  1652. be a day

  1653. that is

  1654. coming when

  1655. I will

  1656. restore my

  1657. relationship

  1658. with my

  1659. people.

  1660. He says,

  1661. you shall

  1662. be a crown

  1663. of beauty

  1664. in the hands

  1665. of the

  1666. Lord,

  1667. and a

  1668. royal diadem

  1669. in the

  1670. hand of

  1671. your God.

  1672. You shall

  1673. no more

  1674. be termed

  1675. forsaken,

  1676. and your

  1677. land shall

  1678. no more

  1679. be termed

  1680. desolate,

  1681. but you

  1682. shall be

  1683. called

  1684. my

  1685. delight

  1686. is in

  1687. her,

  1688. and your

  1689. land shall

  1690. be called

  1691. married.

  1692. For the

  1693. Lord delights

  1694. in you,

  1695. and your

  1696. land shall

  1697. be married,

  1698. for as a

  1699. young man

  1700. marries a

  1701. young woman,

  1702. so shall

  1703. your sons

  1704. marry you,

  1705. and as the

  1706. bridegroom

  1707. rejoices over

  1708. the bride,

  1709. so shall

  1710. your God

  1711. rejoice over

  1712. you.

  1713. And friends,

  1714. if you

  1715. haven't,

  1716. if you

  1717. weren't here

  1718. when we

  1719. preached through

  1720. Hosea a

  1721. couple years

  1722. ago,

  1723. if you

  1724. haven't read

  1725. the book

  1726. of Hosea,

  1727. it is

  1728. all about

  1729. this picture.

  1730. So in

  1731. Hosea 2,

  1732. the Lord

  1733. says this,

  1734. in that

  1735. day,

  1736. declares the

  1737. Lord,

  1738. you will

  1739. call me

  1740. husband,

  1741. and no

  1742. longer will

  1743. you call

  1744. me my

  1745. Baal,

  1746. for I

  1747. will remove

  1748. the name

  1749. of the

  1750. Baals,

  1751. Baals were

  1752. Old Testament

  1753. gods other

  1754. than the

  1755. God of the

  1756. Bible,

  1757. I will

  1758. remove the

  1759. names of

  1760. the Baals

  1761. from her

  1762. mouth,

  1763. and they

  1764. shall be

  1765. remembered

  1766. by name

  1767. no more,

  1768. and I

  1769. will betroth

  1770. you to

  1771. me forever,

  1772. I will

  1773. betroth you

  1774. to me

  1775. in righteousness

  1776. and in

  1777. justice,

  1778. in steadfast

  1779. love and

  1780. mercy,

  1781. I will

  1782. betroth you

  1783. to me

  1784. in faithfulness,

  1785. and you

  1786. shall know

  1787. the Lord.

  1788. And friends,

  1789. as we trace

  1790. this theme

  1791. in the Old

  1792. Testament

  1793. through the

  1794. coming of

  1795. Jesus,

  1796. and His

  1797. life,

  1798. and His

  1799. death,

  1800. and His

  1801. resurrection,

  1802. and we

  1803. see how

  1804. great a

  1805. love with

  1806. which God

  1807. has loved

  1808. us in

  1809. this.

  1810. And Jesus,

  1811. the risen

  1812. one,

  1813. is not only

  1814. called the

  1815. Savior,

  1816. and the

  1817. King,

  1818. and the

  1819. Lamb of

  1820. God who

  1821. takes away

  1822. the sin

  1823. of the

  1824. world,

  1825. but He

  1826. is also

  1827. the Lamb

  1828. who invites

  1829. us to

  1830. the wedding

  1831. feast,

  1832. where we

  1833. will be

  1834. His bride,

  1835. and He

  1836. will be

  1837. our

  1838. bridegroom.

  1839. And so

  1840. we see

  1841. in Revelation

  1842. 19,

  1843. John saying,

  1844. then I

  1845. heard what

  1846. seemed to be

  1847. the voice

  1848. of a

  1849. great

  1850. multitude

  1851. like a

  1852. roar of

  1853. many

  1854. waters,

  1855. and the

  1856. sound of

  1857. many

  1858. mighty

  1859. peals

  1860. of

  1861. thunder

  1862. crying out,

  1863. Hallelujah,

  1864. for the

  1865. Lord our

  1866. God,

  1867. the Almighty

  1868. reigns.

  1869. Let us

  1870. rejoice and

  1871. exult and

  1872. give Him

  1873. the glory,

  1874. for the

  1875. marriage of

  1876. the Lamb

  1877. has come,

  1878. and His

  1879. bride has

  1880. made herself

  1881. ready.

  1882. It was

  1883. granted her

  1884. to clothe

  1885. herself with

  1886. fine linen,

  1887. bright and

  1888. pure,

  1889. and the

  1890. fine linen

  1891. is the

  1892. righteous deeds

  1893. of the

  1894. saints.

  1895. And the

  1896. angel said

  1897. to me,

  1898. write this,

  1899. blessed are

  1900. those who

  1901. are invited

  1902. to the

  1903. marriage

  1904. supper of

  1905. the Lamb.

  1906. And He

  1907. said to me,

  1908. these are

  1909. the true

  1910. words of

  1911. God.

  1912. Friends,

  1913. do you

  1914. see that

  1915. this is

  1916. the good

  1917. news of

  1918. the gospel

  1919. in

  1920. marriage?

  1921. That

  1922. Jesus has

  1923. come to

  1924. us to

  1925. win us

  1926. out of

  1927. our sin

  1928. and our

  1929. unfaithfulness

  1930. and our

  1931. infidelity,

  1932. out of the

  1933. stain and

  1934. the brokenness

  1935. of our

  1936. lives,

  1937. God's

  1938. to make

  1939. us to

  1940. make us

  1941. His

  1942. perfect

  1943. bride.

  1944. If we

  1945. came to

  1946. Him,

  1947. we would

  1948. all be

  1949. the

  1950. adulterous,

  1951. wayward

  1952. spouse,

  1953. because our

  1954. faithfulness

  1955. is never

  1956. pure and

  1957. perfect,

  1958. because our

  1959. unfaithfulness,

  1960. our hearts

  1961. are prone

  1962. to wander.

  1963. But Jesus

  1964. comes and

  1965. He takes

  1966. hold of us

  1967. by His

  1968. love and

  1969. by His

  1970. Spirit.

  1971. He convicts

  1972. us of

  1973. sin and

  1974. brings us

  1975. to repentance

  1976. and faith

  1977. and by

  1978. union with

  1979. Him,

  1980. we are

  1981. now His

  1982. bride.

  1983. And how

  1984. blessed are

  1985. we who are

  1986. invited to

  1987. the marriage

  1988. supper of

  1989. the Lamb.

  1990. This is the

  1991. good news of

  1992. the gospel.

  1993. And this is

  1994. the power

  1995. for us

  1996. to respond

  1997. to Jesus'

  1998. call today.

  1999. Friends,

  2000. if you've

  2001. been convicted

  2002. that you've

  2003. not following,

  2004. that you have

  2005. not followed

  2006. or are not

  2007. following Jesus,

  2008. repent of

  2009. your sin

  2010. and receive

  2011. His forgiveness.

  2012. Know that

  2013. this is not

  2014. unforgivable,

  2015. that Jesus

  2016. by His life

  2017. and death

  2018. and resurrection

  2019. will cleanse

  2020. you from

  2021. all your sin

  2022. and free

  2023. you from

  2024. unrighteousness

  2025. so that you

  2026. can live

  2027. a new life.

  2028. Friends,

  2029. if you are

  2030. in a hard

  2031. marriage

  2032. and you

  2033. look at

  2034. your spouse

  2035. and you

  2036. think,

  2037. I don't

  2038. know if

  2039. I can

  2040. keep doing

  2041. this,

  2042. look at

  2043. your Savior

  2044. and know

  2045. how much

  2046. He has

  2047. loved you

  2048. and love

  2049. one another,

  2050. not even

  2051. for their

  2052. sake,

  2053. but for

  2054. Jesus'

  2055. sake.

  2056. Where

  2057. there's

  2058. been

  2059. betrayal,

  2060. let God's

  2061. forgiveness

  2062. of you

  2063. be the

  2064. starting

  2065. point.

  2066. And

  2067. friends,

  2068. where there

  2069. has been

  2070. or is

  2071. hard-heartedness

  2072. and abandonment,

  2073. when it

  2074. really is

  2075. done,

  2076. grieve

  2077. with Jesus

  2078. the breakdown.

  2079. Let Him

  2080. be the

  2081. one who

  2082. is gentle

  2083. and lowly,

  2084. who invites

  2085. you to

  2086. give Him

  2087. your burdens.

  2088. Let Him

  2089. be your

  2090. comfort and

  2091. your rock

  2092. and the

  2093. lover of

  2094. your soul

  2095. better than

  2096. any.

  2097. and for

  2098. all of us

  2099. this morning,

  2100. let us

  2101. marvel at

  2102. the love

  2103. that God

  2104. has shown

  2105. us.

  2106. Let us

  2107. pursue Him

  2108. and His

  2109. kingdom.

  2110. Let's pray.

  2111. Lord,

  2112. we feel

  2113. the weight

  2114. of these

  2115. words,

  2116. Spirit,

  2117. and so

  2118. often,

  2119. Lord,

  2120. those of

  2121. us with

  2122. tender

  2123. consciences

  2124. are overly

  2125. burdened,

  2126. and those

  2127. of us

  2128. with hardened

  2129. consciences

  2130. are untouched

  2131. by Your

  2132. Word.

  2133. Lord,

  2134. I pray

  2135. today that

  2136. by Your

  2137. Spirit,

  2138. You would

  2139. sort out

  2140. in our

  2141. hearts,

  2142. that You

  2143. would convict

  2144. us of

  2145. sin and

  2146. of unrighteousness.

  2147. Lord,

  2148. I pray that

  2149. You would

  2150. also comfort

  2151. and help

  2152. those who

  2153. feel great

  2154. burdens of

  2155. hurt,

  2156. shame

  2157. today.

  2158. Oh,

  2159. Lord,

  2160. do this

  2161. work,

  2162. we pray,

  2163. Lord,

  2164. so that

  2165. we might

  2166. know

  2167. the amazing

  2168. gospel of

  2169. grace,

  2170. that You

  2171. have not

  2172. loved us

  2173. because we've

  2174. deserved it,

  2175. but You

  2176. have loved

  2177. us well.

  2178. and in

  2179. Jesus,

  2180. You have

  2181. saved us

  2182. from our

  2183. sin and

  2184. made us

  2185. Your own.

  2186. What great

  2187. joy that

  2188. is.

  2189. Be with

  2190. us now,

  2191. in Jesus'

  2192. name,

  2193. amen.

  2194. Friends,

  2195. we're going

  2196. to end

  2197. our service

  2198. with going

  2199. to the

  2200. Lord's

  2201. Supper as

  2202. the worship

  2203. team comes

  2204. up.

  2205. There are

  2206. lots of

  2207. different ways

  2208. we could

  2209. talk about

  2210. what we

  2211. do when

  2212. we come

  2213. to the

  2214. table.

  2215. One of

  2216. the ways

  2217. that I think

  2218. we can

  2219. frame it

  2220. is this.

  2221. This is

  2222. the marriage

  2223. supper of

  2224. the Lamb,

  2225. where we

  2226. get to

  2227. come and

  2228. partake of

  2229. the cup and

  2230. of the juice

  2231. to remember

  2232. His great

  2233. love for

  2234. us.

  2235. It is a

  2236. celebration of

  2237. our salvation

  2238. that He has

  2239. worked for

  2240. us and the

  2241. love that He

  2242. shows us in

  2243. Christ.

  2244. And if you

  2245. this morning

  2246. are here and

  2247. you have placed

  2248. your faith in

  2249. Christ,

  2250. then let this

  2251. be a time for

  2252. you to come

  2253. and remember

  2254. and rejoice

  2255. in His love

  2256. for you.

  2257. If God has

  2258. convicted you of

  2259. sin this morning,

  2260. come and take

  2261. so that you

  2262. might know

  2263. His forgiveness.

  2264. If you find

  2265. your heart

  2266. hardened,

  2267. let Him break

  2268. your heart

  2269. again by

  2270. remembering the

  2271. degree, the

  2272. sacrifice that

  2273. Jesus made for

  2274. you with His

  2275. very own body,

  2276. His very own

  2277. blood shed for

  2278. you, bearing

  2279. the punishment

  2280. for your sin.

  2281. If you're here

  2282. this morning and

  2283. you haven't placed

  2284. your faith in

  2285. Christ, we would

  2286. ask, let the

  2287. elements pass by.

  2288. Don't take of it

  2289. because it is an

  2290. expression of faith,

  2291. but rather consider

  2292. the message of

  2293. Jesus' love for

  2294. people like you

  2295. and me.

  2296. And know Jesus'

  2297. invitation to

  2298. come to Him

  2299. and by faith

  2300. receive His

  2301. gift of salvation

  2302. this morning.

  2303. Friends, we're

  2304. going to spend a

  2305. few minutes just

  2306. in reflection.

  2307. The worship team

  2308. is going to play

  2309. from There is a

  2310. Fountain Filled

  2311. with Blood,

  2312. just for us to

  2313. have a few minutes

  2314. of quiet before

  2315. we take together.

  2316. If you have not

  2317. gotten the

  2318. elements, if you

  2319. haven't gotten one

  2320. of these, there

  2321. are ushers on the

  2322. side who can get

  2323. this as well.

  2324. So let's meditate

  2325. as we prepare our

  2326. hearts for communion.

  2327. Thank you.

  2328. for watching.

  2329. Thank you.

2338. Beneath that cleansing flood, He washed all our sins away.

2361. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.

2362. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,

2363. you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

  2364. Let's take a cup together.

2365. Oh, Lord, what great love that you have shown us

2366. that while we were still sinners, you died for us.

2367. And, Lord, thank you now that because of the new covenant in your blood,

2368. Lord, there is nothing that can separate us,

2369. life or death or anything else.

2370. Oh, Lord, what great love you have loved us with.

2371. Pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
