  1. The prophet Isaiah records the Lord's declaration.

  2. I will lead the blind by ways they have not known.

  3. Along unfamiliar paths I will guide them.

  4. I will turn the darkness into light before them

  5. and make the rough places smooth.

  6. These are the things I will do.

  7. I will not forsake them.

  8. Two great truths I trust every follower of Christ has experienced in this world.

  9. We are mostly blind as we travel through this world

  10. and we are well led as we travel through this world.

  11. Are we not mostly blind as we travel through this world?

  12. What do we know of the path that lies ahead of us,

  13. around the corner and beyond our vision?

  14. What have we understood of the significance of our path that lies behind us?

  15. What do we really know of how the immediate steps before us will unfold?

  16. These are things all veiled from our sight and understanding.

  17. Ah, but are we not well led?

  18. There is an almighty hand at the wheel of prophets.

  19. The one who guides us knows the end from the beginning.

  20. He ordains our destinations and he sustains us in every step along the way.

  21. So yes, we have a sober truth.

  22. We're largely blind.

  23. But with it, we have a great consolation.

  24. So we gather this morning confessing our blindness,

  25. but rejoicing in that one who guides us all of our days in grace

  26. until that grace fades into glory.

  27. So let's stand, if you're able, and exalt our great God and guide

  28. in heartfelt praise in the great hymn,

  29. O Worship the King.

  30. 업

  31. ave

  32. His power and His love

  33. Are should and repender

  34. The ancient of days

  35. For in on its splendor

  36. Blandered and with praise

  37. O tell of His might

  38. O sing of His praise

  39. Whose woe is the light

  40. Whose candle He's made

  41. His chariots of rock

  42. The deep thunder hounds for

  43. Dark is His path

  44. On the wings of the storm

  45. The earth with its storm

  46. Of wonders untold

  47. Almighty Thy power

  48. Hath mounted a whole

  49. Established with fast

  50. By a changeless decree

  51. The crowned path cast

  52. Like a match of the sea

  53. O'er God

  54. Oh, yeah.

  55. My bountiful care,

  56. what tongue can recite.

  57. It breathes in the air,

  58. it shines in the light.

  59. It streams from the hills,

  60. it descends to the plain.

  61. It's sweet, it extends in the deep.

  62. Measureless high,

  63. and the low,

  64. angels delight,

  65. to worship the above.

  66. The whole earth creation,

  67. the people now praise.

  68. With true adoration,

  69. so lost in thy grace.

  70. Immortal, invisible,

  71. God only wise,

  72. in thy life,

  73. in thy death shall come,

  74. in thy eyes.

  75. Most blessed,

  76. most glorious creation of days.

  77. Almighty,

  78. almighty,

  79. victory,

  80. may we pray.

  81. On resting,

  82. on hasty,

  83. and silent as fire,

  84. nor wanting,

  85. nor wasting,

  86. thou rulest in mine.

  87. thy justice,

  88. thy mountains,

  89. thy soaring above,

  90. thy clouds,

  91. which are mountains,

  92. of goodness and love.

  93. of goodness and love.

  94. To all life,

  95. thou givest,

  96. to both great and small.

  97. In all life,

  98. thou liveest,

  99. the true life of all.

  100. We blossom and flourish,

  101. as leaves on the tree,

  102. and wither and perish,

  103. but not change at thee.

  104. Great Father of glory,

  105. pure Father of life,

  106. Thine angels adore thee,

  107. all daily their shine.

  108. All praise ye will render,

  109. O help us to see,

  110. tis only the splendor

  111. of thine,

  112. high and near.

  113. O praise ye will render,

  114. O help us to see,

  115. tis only the splendor

  116. of life, high and near.

  117. Please be seated.

  118. Do not be slothful in zeal,

  119. be fervent in spirit,

  120. serve the Lord.

  121. Rejoice in hope,

  122. be patient in tribulation,

  123. be constant in prayer.

  124. Contribute to the needs of the saints,

  125. and seek to show hospitality.

  126. Bless those who persecute you,

  127. bless and do not curse them.

  128. Rejoice with those who rejoice,

  129. weep with those who weep.

  130. Live in harmony with one another.

  131. Do not be haughty,

  132. but associate with the lowly.

  133. Never be wise in your own sight.

  134. Repay no one evil for evil,

  135. but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

  136. If possible, so far as it depends on you,

  137. live peaceably with all.

  138. Beloved, never avenge yourselves,

  139. but leave it to the wrath of God,

  140. for it is written,

  141. vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.

  142. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him.

  143. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

  144. For by so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head.

  145. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

  146. This is the word of the Lord.

  147. Amen.

  148. O Lord, we are humbled by the example of Jesus,

  149. who loved the sinner and the evildoer,

  150. who was oppressed and afflicted,

  151. yet did not open his mouth,

  152. who did not seek fame or popularity,

  153. but associated with those of low repute.

  154. We consider his example

  155. in the commands you give us in this passage,

  156. and we are humbled by how short we fall.

  157. We confess that we have followed after the pattern of the world

  158. and have repaid evil for evil.

  159. We have not sought the good of our enemies,

  160. but have, in ways explicit and implicit, cursed them,

  161. whether criticizing them to their face,

  162. or grumbling behind their backs,

  163. or maligning them online.

  164. We have failed to show the world the example of Jesus,

  165. who blessed those who persecuted him.

  166. Moreover, Lord, we have failed to follow your example

  167. of associating with the lowly.

  168. We confess that we are drawn to those with social connections,

  169. power, money, and education.

  170. We resist those who seem to have nothing to offer us,

  171. who seem to lack connections and influence.

  172. We overlook them in our neighborhoods, our offices,

  173. and the pews of our church.

  174. O Lord, we are grieved by how short we fall of your commands.

  175. We are truly sorry, and we humbly repent.

  176. Let us take a moment to confess our sin to God in our hearts.

  177. O Lord, we marvel at the starting, startling, countercultural example of the

  178. Jesus, who loved his enemies and those who persecuted him.

  179. For so once were we.

  180. Thank you, Father, for relentlessly pursuing us in love,

  181. even when we sin against you again and again,

  182. and failed to model a Christlike example to the world.

  183. We entrust ourselves fully, Lord, to the saving work of Christ on the cross,

  184. and ask for your help, day by day, to live out our calling as your ambassadors in the world.

  185. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

  186. Let us pray.

  187. Brothers and sisters, hear this word of assurance for all of God's covenant people,

  188. we who cast ourselves upon Christ our Savior.

  189. The prophet Micah declares,

  190. Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgressions?

  191. Because you delight in steadfast love,

  192. you will cast all of our sins into the depths of the sea.

  193. People of God, we have a forgiveness as sure as God's unchanging,

  194. steadfast covenant love, secured by the covenant blood of the Son.

  195. Let us rejoice in that assurance.

  196. Please stand as we continue to praise God in song as you're able.

  197. I really we can tread for the peace in our actions.

  198. Let usĩs will name the Church.

  199. Thank you пок drunk a distance.

  200. Like God Shopping it so it is a spirit of God's spirit wrestling

  201. and fulfilling our sanctificationifica starts.

  202. Before we pray throughout that seed we'll 然後 mix in hope,

  203. toíaゆ we join now on our walks.

  204. Put our faith, hope it helps so elderlyly know that kind of peace

  205. When I surveyed the wondrous cross

  206. On which the Prince of Glory died

  207. My riches gained, I count but loss

  208. And pour contempt on all my pride

  209. See from His head, His hands

  210. His feet, sorrow and love

  211. Prove me, go down

  212. Dare such love and sorrow me

  213. O'er thorns come pour so rich a crown

  214. O the wonderful cross

  215. O the wonderful cross

  216. Binds me come and die

  217. And find that I may truly live

  218. O the wonderful cross

  219. O the wonderful cross

  220. All who gather here

  221. By grace draw near

  222. And bless your name

  223. Where the whole realm of nature

  224. Mild

  225. That were an offering far too small

  226. Love so amazing

  227. So divine

  228. Deep let my soul

  229. My life, my all

  230. O the wonderful cross

  231. O the wonderful cross

  232. Binds me come and die

  233. And find that I may truly live

  234. O the wonderful cross

  235. O the wonderful cross

  236. O the wonderful cross

  237. All who gather here

  238. By grace draw near

  239. And bless your name

  240. O the wonderful cross

  241. O the wonderful cross

  242. O the wonderful cross

  243. O the wonderful cross

  244. O the wonderful cross

  245. Binds me come and die

  246. And find that I may truly live

  247. O the wonderful cross

  248. O the wonderful cross

  249. O the wonderful cross

  250. O the wonderful cross

  251. O the wonderful cross

  252. O the wonderful cross

  253. O the wonderful cross

  254. All who gather here

  255. By grace draw near

  256. And bless your name

  257. You may be seated

  258. You may be seated

  259. Well we come to a point in our service

  260. Where we will speak a little bit

  261. About some of the family matters

  262. And things that are going on

  263. And as we do

  264. We'll be passing the offering plates

  265. If you're a visitor here

  266. We're just delighted you're here

  267. Please feel no obligation to give

  268. The ministries of the church here

  269. Are happily supported by members

  270. And regular attenders

  271. But we are particularly glad

  272. That you are visiting

  273. And if we are

  274. We'd love an opportunity

  275. To get to know you a little bit

  276. And discover something of

  277. Some of your spiritual aspirations

  278. And desires

  279. And something of your story

  280. And to that end

  281. You should find a little card

  282. In the pew stalls above you

  283. Or in front of you

  284. Where you could fill out your name

  285. And there's also an opportunity

  286. On the back of that

  287. To indicate any ways

  288. In which we can be praying for you

  289. And of course all are welcome

  290. To fill those out

  291. Just drop them

  292. In the offering plate coming by

  293. Or in the boxes you'll find

  294. At the entrances and exits

  295. Of the church

  296. Of the church

  297. This upcoming Saturday

  298. The 26th

  299. Will be a church work day

  300. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  301. In Nehemiah

  302. You remember that book

  303. That's kind of all about

  304. The people of God getting together

  305. And doing a work project

  306. It says

  307. The people said

  308. Let us rise up and build

  309. So they strengthen their hands

  310. For the good work

  311. Well we are hoping on this work day

  312. That many hands

  313. Will kind of lighten the burden

  314. Of the work

  315. And also that a hearty breakfast

  316. Copious snacks

  317. And far famed New Haven pizza

  318. Which will be on offer for lunch

  319. Will help to strengthen the hands

  320. For that good work

  321. So we'd love to see you all

  322. As you're able to come

  323. And there'll be

  324. There'll be tasks

  325. It's really

  326. The whole family

  327. There will be tasks

  328. Tapered to the capacities

  329. Or incapacities of all and any

  330. So don't let that exclude you

  331. By any means

  332. Beck

  333. I wonder if you might come up

  334. Thank you

  335. And tell us something

  336. About the exciting upcoming

  337. Carol service

  338. Good morning Church

  339. My name is Beck Coburn

  340. And I'm the music coordinator

  341. Here at Trinity

  342. And it's that time of year again

  343. The nights are cooler

  344. The leaves are turning

  345. And I'm already getting excited

  346. About our Christmas carol services

  347. Last week

  348. Pastor Nick announced a change

  349. To how we do our carol service

  350. At Trinity

  351. In previous years

  352. We have hosted just one service

  353. But this year

  354. We're going to be hosting

  355. Two separate carol services

  356. On Sunday December the 8th

  357. The first will be a shorter

  358. Family friendly service

  359. At 4pm

  360. This will include

  361. The much anticipated kids item

  362. The much anticipated kids item

  363. Which will be directed by

  364. Feifei Daniels this year

  365. And the kids will rehearse for this

  366. During the normal children's ministry

  367. Time slot on Sunday morning

  368. Starting in mid-November

  369. And the second service will be

  370. A longer traditional carol service

  371. At 7pm

  372. It won't have the kids item

  373. But it will have some special vocal

  374. And instrumental items

  375. And longer Bible readings

  376. Than a homily

  377. Best of all

  378. At both services

  379. We get to sing carols together

  380. And both services will include

  381. The same carols

  382. Which will be led by a choir

  383. And an orchestra

  384. Made up of congregants

  385. From our church

  386. So I am here to invite you

  387. To get involved

  388. If you enjoy singing

  389. And would like to be a part of the choir

  390. Which is normally about

  391. 20 to 30 people

  392. Or if you play a woodwind string

  393. Or brass instrument

  394. And would like to be a part of the orchestra

  395. Here's what you need to do

  396. You can either come and speak to me

  397. At the end of the service

  398. I'll be standing up the front here

  399. Or you can fill in a comment card

  400. With your details

  401. And your email address

  402. And place it in one of the boxes

  403. On the way out

  404. Or there is information

  405. And a link to a sign up page

  406. In the Trinity newsletter

  407. That is emailed out on Fridays

  408. So check that out

  409. Let me know your keen

  410. And look forward to our carol service

  411. See you then

  412. Thank you Beck

  413. Well let's turn to the Lord

  414. In prayer

  415. Our Father how acutely we feel

  416. The road which we tread

  417. In this pilgrimage of life

  418. Is so often a path

  419. As yet untraveled

  420. Over the portal of each new wend

  421. The inscription greets us

  422. You have not passed this way before

  423. And how prone we can be

  424. Moving through such unknown territory

  425. To anxieties and apprehensions

  426. What storms lower on the horizon

  427. What untold cloud-veiled afflictions await

  428. What grim assailants lurk shadowy in our imagination

  429. The fearful cries and alarms of fellow pilgrims

  430. Ringing in our ears

  431. Their trembling at times is contagious

  432. Is contagious

  433. But why these fears and tremblings

  434. For you Jesus

  435. Are our pilot

  436. You not only know the way you have appointed it

  437. And so consecrated it to our good

  438. Mysteries may enshroud it

  439. Sorrows may darken it

  440. Sorrows may darken it

  441. Tears may bedew it

  442. Losses may pave it

  443. But it is the path

  444. Which you Lord

  445. Have wisely and lovingly ordained

  446. And

  447. What a comfort is this

  448. A path upon which you accompany us

  449. Not simply with fellow travelers

  450. That were a blessing

  451. Nor even with angels

  452. That were a marvel

  453. But with your very self

  454. What wonder of condescension and grace

  455. I am with you always you tell us

  456. There is a choice promise

  457. Lord may we not hold it in slight esteem

  458. Grant us to cherish your indwelling presence

  459. By your spirit

  460. Ever mindful not to quench your spirit's promptings

  461. Or grieve your spirit's holiness

  462. By conscious sin

  463. Lord may we seek your face

  464. Early

  465. Earnestly

  466. Always

  467. And so come to know the sweetness

  468. Of heart communion with you

  469. May we forget our fear

  470. In your face

  471. Dissolve our anxieties

  472. In your assurances

  473. Drown our perils

  474. In your promises

  475. Lord

  476. Forge us through your grace and truth

  477. Into a people

  478. Calm in the face of calamity

  479. Lovers in the midst of haters

  480. Firmly rooted

  481. Amidst falling foundations

  482. Servants among those self-centered

  483. For the lost

  484. Not against them

  485. Bearing your words

  486. Forgive them for they know not what they do

  487. O Lord would you etch upon us as your people

  488. Your likeness and your fragrance

  489. By the deep renewing work of your word and spirit

  490. And even now as we soon open your word

  491. Walk among us and trim our wigs

  492. And trim our wigs

  493. That we may burn brightly in your name

  494. We ask it Lord

  495. That you may be lifted up in our lives

  496. Just as you were upon the cross

  497. And so draw many to yourself

  498. Make your name great Father

  499. Exalt the Son

  500. Come Holy Spirit

  501. Amen

  502. Amen

  503. It's time now for the children to be dismissed

  504. To their classes

  505. You can follow them and check them in

  506. Here to your right

  507. Through grades five

  508. Please stand too as we continue in song

  509. Hear the song

  510. Amen

  511. Amen

  512. Amen

  513. Amen

  514. Amen

  515. Amen

  516. Amen

  517. Amen

  518. Amen

  519. Amen

  520. Amen

  521. Amen

  522. Come you weary heart now to Jesus

  523. Come you anxious soul now to see

  524. There is perfect love and comfort in your tears

  525. Rest here in his wondrous peace

  526. Oh the goodness, the goodness of Jesus

  527. Satisfied me is all that I need

  528. May it become what may

  529. That may be

  530. There is perfect love and comfort in your tears

  531. Rest here in his wondrous peace

  532. Oh the goodness, the goodness of Jesus

  533. Come find what this world cannot offer

  534. In the world cannot offer

  535. Everything you hope has

  536. Sadness is fulfillment in your tears

  537. In my eternal life

  538. That may Jesus

  539. To make you peace

  540. If there is great power now to see

  541. In the goodness of Jesus

  542. That may be grace

  543. That may work now here in the goodness of Jesus

  544. You know what that might die all tonight

  545. These areние promises

  546. are not offered.

  547. Come and find your joy

  548. here complete.

  549. Taste the living water

  550. and the thirst again.

  551. Rest here in his

  552. wondrous peace.

  553. Oh, the goodness,

  554. the goodness of Jesus

  555. satisfying me is all

  556. that I need.

  557. May it become one way

  558. that I rest all my days

  559. in the goodness of Jesus.

  560. Come and find your hope

  561. now in Jesus.

  562. He is all he said he would be.

  563. Grace is overflowing

  564. from the Savior's heart.

  565. Rest here in his wondrous peace.

  566. Oh, the goodness,

  567. the goodness of Jesus

  568. satisfying me is all

  569. that I need.

  570. May it become one way

  571. that I rest all my days

  572. in the goodness of Jesus.

  573. Oh, the goodness,

  574. the goodness of Jesus

  575. satisfying me is all

  576. that I need.

  577. May it become one way

  578. that I rest all my days

  579. in the goodness of Jesus.

  580. May it become one way

  581. that I rest all my days

  582. in the goodness

  583. of Jesus.

  584. Please be seated.

  585. Good morning, church.

  586. Would you turn with me

  587. to Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5:38–42

  588. verses 38 through 42.

  589. I believe that's page 760

  590. in the Pew Bible

  591. if you'd like to follow along now.

  592. Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5:38–42

  593. verses 38 through 42.

  594. Let me pray,

  595. and then I'll read our text for us.

  596. Father, what a wonder it is

  597. that we here this morning

  598. can sing and meditate

  599. on the goodness of Jesus.

  600. What a privilege it is

  601. to know the one

  602. who is supremely good.

  603. Lord, our desire this morning

  604. is to know more of him.

  605. And we know that even

  606. that desire within us

  607. comes from your Holy Spirit.

  608. God, I pray that you

  609. as we approach your word

  610. this morning,

  611. we do so with much confidence

  612. that you will continue

  613. to make good on your promises,

  614. to speak to us,

  615. your people,

  616. to draw our hearts

  617. closer to you in love,

  618. and to show us the way

  619. in which we should go

  620. that we might continue

  621. to know and experience

  622. this goodness for ourselves,

  623. and to show it forth

  624. in our life together.

  625. So help us now

  626. as we turn to your word.

  627. Bless the reading and preaching,

  628. we pray in Jesus' name.

  629. Amen.

  630. All right, Matthew 5,

  631. 38 through 42.

  632. Jesus says this,

  633. You have heard that it was said,

  634. an eye for an eye

  635. and a tooth for a tooth.

  636. But I say to you,

  637. do not resist the one

  638. who is evil.

  639. But if anyone slaps you

  640. on the right cheek,

  641. turn to him the other also.

  642. And if anyone would sue you

  643. and take your tunic,

  644. let him have your cloak as well.

  645. And if anyone forces you

  646. to go one mile,

  647. go with him two miles.

  648. Give to the one

  649. who begs from you

  650. and do not refuse the one

  651. who would borrow from you.

  652. Well, as we consider this passage,

  653. I want to begin by going back

  654. to the Beatitudes

  655. at the beginning

  656. of the Sermon on the Mount.

  657. In particular,

  658. I want us to recall

  659. the seventh Beatitude,

  660. I believe it is.

  661. Blessed are the peacemakers,

  662. for they will be called

  663. sons of God.

  664. Blessed are the peacemakers,

  665. for they will be called

  666. sons,

  667. sons and daughters of God.

  668. What does it look like

  669. to be a peacemaker

  670. and so to show forth

  671. our identity

  672. as God's sons and daughters?

  673. Well, that's what Jesus

  674. is going to show us

  675. in these last two paragraphs

  676. of chapter 5.

  677. We're looking at

  678. the first paragraph today.

  679. We'll look at the second one

  680. next week.

  681. But in both,

  682. Jesus is talking about

  683. how we are to approach

  684. our enemies,

  685. those who insult us,

  686. those who wrong us.

  687. How do we act

  688. in those most trying

  689. of our relationships

  690. such that we can be

  691. peacemakers?

  692. In verse 45,

  693. in the second paragraph

  694. of the end of chapter 5 here,

  695. Jesus says,

  696. there is a way

  697. to respond

  698. that will show forth

  699. that we are sons and daughters

  700. of our Father

  701. who is in heaven.

  702. And we see there

  703. in verse 45

  704. the connection back

  705. to that seventh beatitude.

  706. This is what it looks like

  707. to be a child

  708. of your heavenly Father.

  709. This is the way

  710. of peacemaking.

  711. And what Jesus touches

  712. on here

  713. in this first paragraph

  714. in verses 38 through 42

  715. is that natural response

  716. that arises

  717. when we're offended

  718. or wronged.

  719. If someone insults you

  720. or cheats you

  721. or wrongs you,

  722. how?

  723. How do we naturally respond

  724. in those moments?

  725. Well,

  726. we sort of want

  727. to pay them back,

  728. don't we?

  729. You insult me,

  730. I insult you.

  731. You cheat me,

  732. I cheat you.

  733. You hurt me,

  734. I hurt you.

  735. I imagine we've all

  736. experienced those feelings

  737. and perhaps,

  738. more often than we care

  739. to admit,

  740. we've at times

  741. responded that way.

  742. But of course,

  743. the problem is,

  744. the problem is

  745. this sort of response,

  746. it doesn't really solve

  747. the problem, does it?

  748. It just sort of

  749. makes matters worse

  750. because the circle

  751. just keeps going

  752. around and around.

  753. And each time

  754. we sort of respond

  755. in kind,

  756. it inevitably begins

  757. to escalate,

  758. doesn't it?

  759. You insult me,

  760. so I insult you,

  761. so you insult me again,

  762. but the next insult

  763. is bigger,

  764. a little bigger,

  765. a little bigger

  766. than the last.

  767. Until suddenly,

  768. people are saying

  769. things of one another

  770. they'd never dream

  771. of saying

  772. before that cycle

  773. started.

  774. And sadly,

  775. this can happen

  776. in even our

  777. closest relationships.

  778. Neighbors,

  779. siblings,

  780. spouses,

  781. church members,

  782. the cycles

  783. go on and on.

  784. And eventually,

  785. these relationships

  786. wither,

  787. or maybe they even

  788. die altogether.

  789. other.

  790. But what does Jesus

  791. have to say

  792. about all this?

  793. How do we get out

  794. of this cycle

  795. and become

  796. genuine peacemakers?

  797. How,

  798. as followers of Christ,

  799. as people of His kingdom,

  800. do we leave

  801. in our wake

  802. the aroma

  803. of peace

  804. instead of

  805. the bitter

  806. taste of revenge?

  807. Well,

  808. the first thing

  809. we see here

  810. in our passage

  811. is that Jesus

  812. begins

  813. by sort of

  814. subtly exposing

  815. our attempts

  816. at self-justification.

  817. First,

  818. Jesus exposes

  819. our attempts

  820. at self-justification.

  821. Our passage

  822. starts with Jesus

  823. saying,

  824. you've heard

  825. that it was said

  826. an eye for an eye

  827. and a tooth for a tooth.

  828. Now,

  829. this legal principle,

  830. an eye for an eye,

  831. a tooth for a tooth,

  832. comes straight

  833. out of the Mosaic Law,

  834. doesn't it?

  835. So it would be easy

  836. for those in Jesus' day

  837. to say,

  838. see,

  839. there it is.

  840. God's telling me

  841. to be fair,

  842. to be just.

  843. If someone wrongs me,

  844. it's only fair

  845. that I balance the score,

  846. an eye for an eye.

  847. And for first century Jews

  848. under Roman occupation,

  849. you can see

  850. how this would

  851. quickly take

  852. a revolutionary turn,

  853. right?

  854. The Romans offend us,

  855. they take from us,

  856. they wrong us.

  857. Well,

  858. we need to fight back.

  859. We need to take up arms.

  860. We need to win back

  861. what's ours.

  862. It's only right.

  863. But what too often

  864. was the result of that

  865. in the first century?

  866. More violence,

  867. more injury,

  868. more bloodshed.

  869. But for most of us,

  870. most of the time today,

  871. it doesn't get that far,

  872. does it?

  873. More often,

  874. it's much more personal,

  875. more local,

  876. more closer to home.

  877. It's a relationship

  878. with a co-worker

  879. or a family member.

  880. And yet,

  881. we can still

  882. justify our responses,

  883. can't we?

  884. We might not literally say,

  885. an eye for an eye,

  886. but we sort of say,

  887. well, look,

  888. I'm just standing up

  889. for myself

  890. and my rights.

  891. Right?

  892. But in the midst of this,

  893. we have to step back

  894. and ask,

  895. well,

  896. what was the point

  897. of this Old Testament law

  898. in the first place?

  899. What was the point

  900. of this principle

  901. of an eye for an eye,

  902. a tooth for a tooth?

  903. Well,

  904. when we consider

  905. those passages

  906. from the Old Testament

  907. in context,

  908. what we realize

  909. is that this

  910. eye for an eye principle

  911. was actually meant

  912. to do two things.

  913. First thing,

  914. it was meant

  915. to prevent

  916. severe or excessive

  917. penalties for a crime.

  918. Right?

  919. If your neighbor

  920. damaged your fence,

  921. then you couldn't respond

  922. by burning down

  923. their fields.

  924. Right?

  925. No, no.

  926. The punishment

  927. had to be equivalent

  928. to the wrongdoing.

  929. It had to be balanced.

  930. It had to be equal.

  931. And often,

  932. that balancing

  933. was done

  934. through compensation

  935. to the victim,

  936. not literally

  937. doing the same thing

  938. to them in return.

  939. So what an eye

  940. for an eye

  941. meant in practice

  942. is that

  943. if your neighbor

  944. damaged your fence,

  945. then they had to pay

  946. for your fence

  947. to be repaired.

  948. An eye for an eye.

  949. But,

  950. second,

  951. this principle

  952. was meant

  953. to prevent people

  954. not just

  955. from exacting

  956. excessive penalties,

  957. but it was meant

  958. to prevent people

  959. from taking justice

  960. into their own hands.

  961. This principle

  962. of an eye

  963. for an eye

  964. nearly always

  965. comes in the context

  966. of the Old Testament law

  967. describing the legal system

  968. of judges

  969. and courts

  970. and how you handle

  971. these things

  972. in public

  973. through the appropriate

  974. channels.

  975. In other words,

  976. this principle

  977. was meant

  978. to guide the courts

  979. and the judges

  980. in how to rectify wrongs.

  981. It was never meant

  982. to give individuals

  983. permission

  984. to exact

  985. personal revenge

  986. on their enemies.

  987. Just the opposite.

  988. It was meant

  989. to say,

  990. here's the fair standard

  991. for the courts

  992. to right the wrongs.

  993. It was meant

  994. to take

  995. redressing wrongs,

  996. it was meant

  997. to take that desire

  998. out of the realm

  999. of personal revenge

  1000. and place it

  1001. into the realm

  1002. of justice

  1003. and fairness.

  1004. So the point is,

  1005. we can't go

  1006. to this Old Testament

  1007. principle,

1008. an eye for an eye,

  1009. and find there

  1010. any justification

  1011. for our desire

  1012. for revenge.

  1013. It's meant

  1014. to guide

  1015. our public system

  1016. of justice,

  1017. not to stoke

  1018. the flames

  1019. of our desire

  1020. to get even

  1021. with those

  1022. who've offended

  1023. or wronged us.

  1024. Okay.

  1025. Well, how should

  1026. we respond?

  1027. Well, this takes us

  1028. to our next point.

  1029. Second,

  1030. we see that Jesus

  1031. forbids

  1032. retaliation.

  1033. In verse 39,

  1034. Jesus says,

1035. but I say to you,

  1036. do not resist

  1037. the one

  1038. who is evil.

  1039. Okay.

  1040. Now,

  1041. on the surface,

  1042. doesn't that sound

  1043. like Jesus is saying

  1044. we should just

  1045. let evil people

  1046. do evil things

  1047. to us

  1048. and to others

  1049. and we shouldn't

  1050. do anything about it.

  1051. Don't resist

1052. the one who is evil.

  1053. But clearly,

  1054. that can't be

  1055. what Jesus means

  1056. when we look

  1057. at the context

  1058. of the rest

  1059. of the New Testament.

  1060. For starters,

  1061. Jesus himself

  1062. is often standing up

  1063. against the corrupt

  1064. religious authorities

  1065. of his day.

  1066. Likewise,

  1067. in the rest

  1068. of the New Testament,

  1069. the apostles

  1070. are willing

  1071. to make appropriate

  1072. appeals to justice

1073. and to the legal courts.

  1074. They're willing

  1075. to advocate

  1076. for their own protection

  1077. and for others.

  1078. Do you remember

  1079. when Paul and Silas

  1080. were publicly beaten

  1081. and imprisoned

  1082. at Philippi

1083. in the book of Acts?

  1084. What happens?

  1085. Well, the next day,

  1086. the magistrates

  1087. send the police

1088. to go let them go,

  1089. right?

  1090. So the police

1091. come to Paul and Silas

  1092. and they say,

  1093. okay, you two,

  1094. you can leave town

  1095. quietly.

  1096. You see,

  1097. the authorities

  1098. just want to pretend

  1099. like nothing happened

  1100. and send Paul

  1101. and Silas away.

1102. But what does Paul do?

  1103. In Acts 16,

  1104. 37 through 39,

  1105. Paul says to them,

  1106. they've beaten us

  1107. publicly,

  1108. uncondemned,

1109. men who are Roman citizens

  1110. and have thrown us

  1111. into prison,

  1112. and do they now

  1113. throw us out secretly?

  1114. No.

  1115. Let them come themselves

  1116. and take us out.

1117. Then Luke goes on to say,

  1118. the police reported

  1119. these words

  1120. to the magistrates

  1121. and they were afraid

  1122. when they heard

1123. that they were Roman citizens.

  1124. So they came

  1125. and apologized to them

1126. and they took them out

  1127. and asked them

  1128. to leave the city.

  1129. So here's a very clear instance

  1130. where Paul is clearly

  1131. resisting evil, right?

  1132. Why?

  1133. Because Paul knew

1134. that if he were to simply

  1135. let his mistreatment

  1136. and imprisonment

  1137. go unchallenged,

  1138. he would be leaving

  1139. the Christians in Philippi

  1140. in danger,

  1141. that they'd be susceptible

1142. to the same sort of treatment.

1143. So Paul forces the magistrates

  1144. to come themselves

  1145. and functionally,

  1146. publicly exonerate him

  1147. and Silas,

  1148. and in so doing,

  1149. Paul provides some protection

1150. for the newly formed church.

1151. It wasn't going to be okay

1152. to just haul them off to jail.

  1153. They were Roman citizens.

  1154. They had appropriate rights

  1155. under the law.

  1156. So I think that's a good example

1157. of a New Testament practice

  1158. where it's not just

1159. let evil people do evil things

1160. to you all the time.

  1161. So that's clearly,

  1162. clearly Jesus isn't saying

  1163. that we should just

  1164. let evil people

1165. do evil things to us

  1166. and to others

1167. and do nothing about it.

1168. Okay, so what is he saying?

  1169. Well, it's very interesting

1170. that one New Testament scholar

  1171. has pointed out

1172. that the Greek of verse 39

  1173. could be translated,

  1174. not just the way

  1175. the ESV translates it,

1176. which is do not resist

  1177. the evil person, right?

1178. Do not resist the one

  1179. who is evil.

1180. Do not resist the evil person.

  1181. But it could also

  1182. just as legitimately

  1183. be translated,

  1184. do not resist

  1185. by evil means.

  1186. The Greek there

1187. just has the word evil.

  1188. So is Jesus saying,

  1189. don't resist evil people

  1190. or don't resist

  1191. in evil ways.

  1192. Grammatically,

  1193. it could be either.

1194. And I think the rest

  1195. of the New Testament

  1196. would seem to favor

  1197. that latter reading,

  1198. don't resist

  1199. by evil means,

  1200. that is,

  1201. in revenge

  1202. or retaliation.

1203. But I think even if we keep

  1204. the ESV translation,

  1205. which is perfectly

  1206. legitimate as well,

1207. don't resist the evil person,

  1208. the word resist there

  1209. must have the sense

  1210. of retaliate

  1211. or take revenge

1212. when we look at it

  1213. in the context

1214. of the rest of the paragraph.

  1215. That's certainly

  1216. how the Apostle Paul

  1217. understood Jesus' teaching

  1218. in Romans 12,

  1219. 17 through 21.

  1220. We read this earlier

  1221. in the service.

  1222. Paul says,

1223. repay no one evil for evil,

1224. but give thought to do

  1225. what is honorable

1226. in the sight of all.

  1227. If possible,

1228. so far as it depends on you,

  1229. live peaceably with all.

  1230. Beloved,

  1231. never avenge yourselves,

1232. but leave it to the wrath

  1233. of God,

  1234. for it is written,

  1235. vengeance is mine,

  1236. I will repay,

  1237. says the Lord.

  1238. To the contrary,

1239. if your enemy is hungry,

  1240. feed him.

  1241. If he's thirsty,

1242. give him something to drink,

  1243. for by so doing,

1244. you will heap burning coals

  1245. on his head.

  1246. Do not be overcome

  1247. by evil,

  1248. but overcome evil

  1249. with good.

  1250. Overcome evil

  1251. with good.

1252. So what is Jesus teaching

  1253. in this verse?

  1254. He's not saying

1255. that we simply let evil people

1256. do evil things to us

1257. and we do nothing about it.

  1258. No, he's saying

  1259. that when you respond,

  1260. when you find yourself

  1261. in that situation,

  1262. don't respond

  1263. with a spirit

  1264. of revenge.

  1265. Don't seek to

  1266. retaliate.

  1267. don't try to

  1268. even the score.

1269. Now, in just a second,

  1270. we'll look at

  1271. some of Jesus' examples

  1272. of how to respond.

  1273. But first,

  1274. let me make two

  1275. observations here.

  1276. First,

  1277. if we understand

  1278. these verses rightly,

  1279. then they should

  1280. never be used

  1281. to justify

  1282. abuse

  1283. or to force people

  1284. to stay

  1285. in situations

  1286. of abuse.

  1287. Because the heart

  1288. of what Jesus

  1289. is saying here

  1290. is that we should

  1291. cast off a spirit

  1292. of revenge

  1293. and retaliation.

  1294. But that doesn't mean

  1295. that we should stay

  1296. in situations

  1297. of abuse

  1298. or violence.

  1299. Jesus

  1300. and the apostles

  1301. all took

  1302. appropriate means

  1303. to confront

  1304. and stop evil.

  1305. Removing ourselves

  1306. from abusive relationships,

  1307. even calling

  1308. the authorities

  1309. when necessary,

  1310. is not an act

  1311. of revenge

  1312. or retaliation.

  1313. It can often be

  1314. the greatest act

  1315. of love

  1316. because we're acting

  1317. to stop sin

  1318. and to protect

  1319. the weak

  1320. and vulnerable.

1321. So that's the first thing

  1322. we need to be

  1323. very clear about.

  1324. These verses

  1325. are no justification

  1326. for abuse.

  1327. Second thing,

  1328. I don't think

  1329. these verses

  1330. can be used

  1331. in isolation

  1332. from the rest

  1333. of the New Testament

  1334. to develop

  1335. a Christian approach

  1336. to broader

  1337. ethical questions

  1338. concerning war

  1339. and nonviolence.

  1340. We can't just

  1341. take these verses

  1342. without considering

1343. the rest of the New Testament

  1344. when we think

  1345. about those

  1346. very important questions

  1347. of war,

  1348. nonviolence,

  1349. police force,

  1350. etc.

  1351. It would be

  1352. an oversimplification

1353. to just look at these

  1354. in isolation

  1355. from the rest.

  1356. It would be

  1357. an oversimplification

  1358. to do what

  1359. the Russian novelist

  1360. Leo Tolstoy

  1361. did with these verses.

  1362. He wrote in 1884,

  1363. it's impossible

1364. at one and the same time

  1365. to confess Christ

  1366. as God,

  1367. the basis of whose

  1368. teaching is nonresistance

1369. to him who is evil,

  1370. and consciously

  1371. and calmly

  1372. to work for the

  1373. establishment

  1374. of property,

  1375. law courts,

  1376. government,

  1377. and military forces.

  1378. Okay,

  1379. what's Tolstoy saying?

  1380. He's saying,

  1381. you can't really

  1382. be a Christian

  1383. and be all about

  1384. property and law courts

  1385. and government

  1386. and military forces.

  1387. Why?

  1388. Because they resist

  1389. evil

  1390. and return evil

  1391. for evil.

  1392. He says later,

  1393. Christ totally forbids

  1394. the human institution

  1395. of any law court.

  1396. Okay,

  1397. so I think

  1398. Tolstoy's an example

  1399. of sort of,

  1400. you know,

  1401. the absurdity

1402. that we can get to

  1403. if we just take

  1404. these verses

  1405. in isolation

  1406. from everything else.

  1407. Okay,

  1408. so we can't just

  1409. take these verses

  1410. out of context.

  1411. For example,

  1412. if we turn to

  1413. Romans 13,

  1414. we see that

  1415. the Apostle Paul,

  1416. teaching with Christ's

  1417. authority as an apostle,

  1418. clearly has a place

  1419. for the government's

  1420. use of authority

  1421. to punish evil

  1422. and promote good.

  1423. Right?

  1424. So we can't build

  1425. an entire ethic

  1426. out of one verse.

  1427. However,

  1428. on the other hand,

  1429. we can't simply

  1430. ignore these verses

  1431. either.

  1432. we can't simply

  1433. cast them aside

  1434. and say

  1435. they're unrealistic.

  1436. We can't simply say,

  1437. well,

  1438. they only apply

  1439. on the personal level

  1440. and have nothing

  1441. to say about

  1442. public institutions.

  1443. And aren't we

  1444. a little more prone

  1445. to take that approach?

  1446. No,

  1447. we have to let

  1448. these verses

  1449. have their place

  1450. in the whole picture

1451. of how the New Testament

  1452. would have us think

  1453. about law courts.

  1454. and government

  1455. and military forces,

  1456. as Toltois said.

  1457. Clearly,

  1458. the peacemaking principles

  1459. of our passage

  1460. are relevant

  1461. to all of life.

  1462. We can't just

  1463. relegate them

1464. to a corner of life

  1465. over here

  1466. and then ignore them.

  1467. So the challenge

  1468. for Christians

  1469. in every age

  1470. is to discern

  1471. in prayerful wisdom

  1472. how they apply

  1473. and how we should

  1474. live them out

  1475. in each new context.

  1476. And of course,

  1477. as is often cited

  1478. in relation

  1479. to these verses,

  1480. think of the example

  1481. of the American

  1482. Civil Rights Movement

1483. and Martin Luther King Jr.,

  1484. right?

  1485. The creative,

  1486. faithful application

  1487. of these verses

  1488. to a very real

  1489. social issue.

  1490. Okay,

1491. so with those two things

  1492. being said,

1493. let's return to the main point

1494. of what Jesus is saying

  1495. in verse 39,

  1496. don't retaliate.

  1497. Don't take revenge

  1498. when someone wrongs you.

  1499. Instead,

  1500. Jesus says,

  1501. do this.

  1502. And this brings us

1503. to the third main point

  1504. of our passage.

  1505. Jesus doesn't just

  1506. forbid retaliation,

  1507. but when we're wronged,

  1508. Jesus commands bold,

  1509. cycle-breaking good

  1510. in response.

  1511. Bold,

  1512. cycle-breaking good

  1513. in response.

1514. And he gives four examples,

  1515. and these four examples

1516. aren't meant to be exhaustive.

  1517. Rather,

  1518. they're meant to capture

  1519. the spirit

  1520. of peacemaking initiative

  1521. that is fitting

1522. for the children of God.

  1523. First example,

  1524. if someone slaps you

  1525. on the right cheek,

1526. turn to him the other also.

  1527. Now,

  1528. this isn't talking about

  1529. someone attacking

  1530. or fighting another person.

  1531. In Jesus' day,

  1532. to slap someone

  1533. on the cheek

1534. was to publicly insult them.

  1535. It was the backhanded

  1536. swat that was aimed

  1537. at publicly shaming someone

  1538. and putting someone

  1539. in their place.

  1540. What do you do

  1541. when someone humiliates you

  1542. like this?

  1543. Swat them back?

  1544. No,

  1545. Jesus says.

  1546. Do something

  1547. even braver,

  1548. even bolder than that.

1549. You don't have to cower

  1550. or run away,

1551. but you don't have to

  1552. strike them back either.

  1553. Break the cycle

1554. and turn your other cheek.

  1555. Let them know

  1556. that their insult

  1557. doesn't define you,

  1558. and it won't change

  1559. how you view yourself

  1560. or even them.

  1561. Second example,

1562. if anyone would sue you

  1563. and take your tunic,

1564. let them have your cloak

  1565. as well.

  1566. Now,

  1567. a lot of people

  1568. in Jesus' day

1569. would have more than one tunic.

1570. That was sort of like

1571. our shirt and pants today,

1572. kind of your basic clothing.

  1573. You'd have a few pairs

  1574. of those,

  1575. but most people

1576. would only have one cloak,

  1577. right?

  1578. That was your heavier

  1579. outer garment.

1580. That was sort of like

  1581. your winter coat,

  1582. as it were.

1583. So what is Jesus saying here?

  1584. He's saying,

  1585. don't be afraid

  1586. to part with something

  1587. more costly

  1588. to break the cycle

  1589. of insult

  1590. and petty wrongs.

  1591. Bold,

  1592. cycle-breaking,

  1593. good.

1594. Is someone trying to shame you

  1595. by suing you

  1596. for your shirt?

  1597. Okay.

1598. Give them your coat too.

1599. What will the judge do?

  1600. What will they do

  1601. in response?

1602. It just might put an end

  1603. to the whole thing.

  1604. Third example,

  1605. if anyone forces you

  1606. to go one mile,

1607. go with him two miles.

  1608. Now,

  1609. the historical context

  1610. is helpful here.

  1611. In the first century,

  1612. a Roman soldier

  1613. could conscript

  1614. any Jewish passerby

  1615. on the road

1616. to help carry their baggage

1617. for up to one mile.

1618. That was sort of the law

  1619. that everyone

  1620. had to abide by.

  1621. And of course,

1622. that would not just be

  1623. inconvenient and tiring,

  1624. but also shaming.

1625. The Romans were the oppressors,

1626. and here you were supposed

  1627. to carry their luggage.

  1628. But Jesus says,

1629. rather than grit your teeth

  1630. and despise them,

  1631. thinking in your mind

  1632. what you'd rather do

1633. with them in their luggage,

1634. take it not just one mile,

  1635. take it two.

  1636. Show them

  1637. unexpected kindness.

  1638. Fourth example,

  1639. give to the one

  1640. who begs from you,

  1641. and do not refuse

  1642. the one

1643. who would borrow from you.

  1644. Now, at first,

  1645. this example doesn't seem

1646. to fit with the rest, right?

1647. In the first three examples,

  1648. it seems like there's

  1649. some sort of insult

1650. or some sort of wrong

  1651. taking place,

1652. an insulting slap on the cheek,

  1653. an annoying lawsuit,

  1654. a tiring trek

  1655. with a Roman soldier's pack.

  1656. How is someone begging

  1657. comparable to that?

1658. Well, it's not immediately clear,

1659. but I think the connection

  1660. may be this.

1661. In each of the first

  1662. three instances,

  1663. Jesus calls us

  1664. to do something unexpected.

  1665. Turn the other cheek.

1666. Give the cloak as well.

  1667. Go the extra mile.

1668. Now, here he's telling us

  1669. to give

  1670. to those in need.

  1671. Don't ignore

  1672. the person

1673. who has a genuine need.

1674. Treat them like a human

1675. and help them meet the need.

  1676. Of course,

  1677. I don't think this means

1678. you literally have to give money

1679. to everyone who asks you

  1680. for money.

1681. There may be other ways

1682. that you can give your time

1683. and money to help those in need.

  1684. Oftentimes,

  1685. simply giving someone money

  1686. on the street

1687. isn't really the best way

  1688. to help them.

1689. But even if you discern

  1690. that it's not wise

  1691. in the moment

  1692. to give them money,

1693. you can still treat them

1694. like a fellow human being,

  1695. be respectful,

  1696. politely decline,

  1697. maybe even engage them

  1698. in conversation.

  1699. Are you willing

  1700. to be associated

  1701. with those

1702. who have a genuine need

  1703. and socially are put

  1704. in a situation

  1705. where they must beg

  1706. or borrow?

  1707. Are you willing

  1708. to enter into

  1709. a relationship with them,

  1710. show some solidarity

  1711. with them,

  1712. share your resources

  1713. with them?

  1714. Again,

  1715. you might find

  1716. what people need

  1717. is relationship

  1718. and community

1719. more than they need money.

  1720. Can you provide that?

  1721. Are you willing

  1722. to be associated

  1723. with those

  1724. who have little

  1725. or no status

1726. in the eyes of the world?

  1727. And I wonder

  1728. if that might be

  1729. the connecting thread

  1730. among these four examples.

  1731. In each instance,

  1732. Jesus is describing

  1733. a scenario

  1734. where we face

  1735. the possibility

  1736. not just of being

  1737. inconvenienced

  1738. or being set back

  1739. financially,

  1740. but we face

  1741. the very real possibility

  1742. of being shamed,

  1743. of losing face,

  1744. being proverbially

  1745. slapped on the cheek

  1746. with a public insult,

  1747. being taken to court,

1748. having to play pack mule

  1749. for a Roman soldier,

  1750. associating with the poor,

  1751. possibly even being

  1752. taken advantage of

  1753. by them.

  1754. They all carry

  1755. a strong undercurrent

  1756. of social shame.

  1757. Where do we find

  1758. the strength

  1759. to act

  1760. with such bold,

  1761. cycle-breaking good

1762. to those who wrong us,

  1763. to those who might

  1764. want to take advantage

  1765. of us,

  1766. when the deep

  1767. undercurrent

  1768. of shame

  1769. or humiliation

  1770. is so strong?

  1771. It's so much easier

  1772. to just strike back,

  1773. protect ourselves,

  1774. get even,

  1775. because then we can

  1776. save face, right,

  1777. and spare ourselves

  1778. the humiliation.

  1779. Where do we find

1780. that sort of inner strength?

  1781. Where do we find

1782. this sort of inner strength

  1783. that we read

  1784. that Hudson Taylor had?

  1785. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  1786. tells the story

  1787. of how Hudson Taylor,

  1788. the missionary to China,

1789. was standing on a riverbank

  1790. one evening,

1791. and he hailed a boat

1792. to take him across the river.

1793. And just as the boat

  1794. was drawing near,

  1795. another wealthy Chinese man

  1796. came up

  1797. who didn't recognize

  1798. Hudson Taylor

  1799. as a foreigner

1800. because Taylor was kind of

  1801. wearing the native dress.

1802. So when the boat came,

  1803. the Chinese man

  1804. struck Hudson Taylor

  1805. and thrust him aside

  1806. with such force

  1807. that Taylor

  1808. falls into the mud.

  1809. Hudson Taylor gets up,

  1810. however,

  1811. and says nothing.

  1812. But the boatman

  1813. refuses to take

  1814. his fellow countrymen on

  1815. and says,

  1816. no, no, no,

  1817. that foreigner called me

1818. and the boat is his

1819. and he has to go first.

  1820. Suddenly the wealthy

  1821. Chinese traveler

  1822. is sort of astounded

  1823. and embarrassed

  1824. when he realized

  1825. what he had done.

  1826. But Hudson Taylor

  1827. responds by

  1828. not complaining,

  1829. but inviting man,

  1830. but inviting this man

1831. into the boat with him

1832. and begins to tell him

1833. what it was in him.

  1834. that made him behave

  1835. in such a manner.

  1836. Where do we get

  1837. the inner resources

1838. to do something like that?

  1839. Where do we get

  1840. the inner strength

  1841. that someone like

  1842. Tom Skinner had?

1843. As a young black man

  1844. living in New York,

  1845. Skinner was converted

  1846. to Christ

1847. while he was the leader

  1848. of the largest

  1849. and most notorious

  1850. teenage gang

  1851. in New York City,

  1852. the Harlem Lords.

  1853. His conversion

  1854. was so real

1855. that he left the gang

  1856. the next day

  1857. turning from a life

  1858. of fighting and violence

  1859. to preach the gospel.

1860. And he tells a story

  1861. of how several weeks

  1862. after his conversion

  1863. he was playing

  1864. a football game

  1865. in which his assignment

  1866. on one play

  1867. was to block

  1868. the defensive end

  1869. while his own halfback

  1870. goes around

  1871. and scores a touchdown.

1872. So that's what he did.

1873. And as Skinner gets up

  1874. from the ground

  1875. and heads back

  1876. to the huddle,

  1877. the other boy

  1878. that he had blocked

1879. jumped up in a rage,

1880. slammed him in the stomach,

  1881. and as Skinner's

1882. bent over from the blow,

1883. hits him across the back,

  1884. and then starts

1885. yelling racial slurs at him.

  1886. Skinner said that

  1887. under normal circumstances

  1888. the old Tom Skinner

  1889. would have jumped up

  1890. from the ground

1891. and pulverized the white boy.

  1892. But instead,

1893. he got up from the ground,

  1894. found himself

1895. looking the boy in the face

  1896. and saying,

  1897. you know,

  1898. because of Jesus Christ,

  1899. I love you anyway.

  1900. Later, Skinner said

1901. that he even surprised himself.

  1902. But he knew

1903. that what the Bible promised

  1904. was true,

1905. that he was a new creature

  1906. in Christ

1907. and it was no longer

  1908. necessary for him

  1909. to operate

  1910. on the old level

  1911. of tit for tat,

  1912. of hate for hate,

  1913. or retaliation.

  1914. And moreover,

1915. when the game was over

  1916. and that opposing player

  1917. had had some time

  1918. to think about it,

  1919. apparently he came

  1920. to Skinner and said,

  1921. Tom, you've done more

  1922. to knock prejudice

  1923. out of me

  1924. by telling me

  1925. that you love me

1926. than if you would have

  1927. socked my jaw in.

1928. where does the inner strength

  1929. come from

  1930. to live like that?

  1931. Well, friends,

  1932. this is where.

  1933. Whether it's Hudson Taylor

  1934. or Tom Skinner

  1935. or you

  1936. or me,

1937. if we are in Christ,

1938. then we are a new creation.

  1939. And as Skinner said,

  1940. it's no longer necessary

  1941. to operate

  1942. on the old level

  1943. of tit for tat,

  1944. hate for hate,

  1945. or retaliation.

  1946. Because the shame

  1947. of the world,

  1948. the humiliation

  1949. and shame

  1950. that drives

1951. so much of the world

1952. is not what rules us anymore.

  1953. How?

  1954. How?

  1955. Because we know

  1956. the one

  1957. who did something

  1958. even greater for us.

  1959. Very interesting

  1960. that the prophet Isaiah

  1961. saw

  1962. that when the Messiah

  1963. would come,

  1964. he wouldn't come

  1965. in honor or glory,

  1966. but he would willingly

  1967. be put to shame.

  1968. In Isaiah 50,

  1969. we read

  1970. the words

  1971. of the suffering servant.

  1972. I offered my back

1973. to those who beat me,

  1974. my cheeks

1975. to those who pulled out

  1976. my beard,

  1977. I did not hide

  1978. my face

  1979. from mocking

  1980. and spitting.

  1981. When Christ came,

  1982. he emptied himself

  1983. of glory

  1984. and turned his cheek

1985. to those who insulted him.

  1986. The one who deserved

  1987. infinite glory,

  1988. infinite honor,

  1989. lowered himself

  1990. to be mocked

  1991. and condemned.

  1992. Why?

  1993. Well, friends,

  1994. for you and me.

1995. He was put to shame

  1996. on the cross

1997. so that we could know

  1998. the honor

1999. that nothing in the world

  2000. could take away.

  2001. As John's gospel says,

  2002. to those who believed

  2003. in him,

2004. he gave them the right

2005. to become children of God.

  2006. What greater honor

  2007. could there be?

2008. And he purchased it for you

2009. and for all who believed.

  2010. So now, friends,

  2011. the insults,

  2012. the offenses,

  2013. the shame

  2014. that we might experience

  2015. in this world,

  2016. it just pales

  2017. in comparison

  2018. to the honor

  2019. that we've received

  2020. in Christ.

2021. The glorious Son of God

  2022. humbled himself

  2023. for you,

  2024. for me.

  2025. In him,

  2026. we're sons and daughters

  2027. of God

  2028. and nothing can take

  2029. that away.

  2030. and now secure

  2031. in what he's done

  2032. for us.

  2033. Yes.

2034. We can turn our cheek.

2035. We can go the extra mile.

  2036. We can even give

  2037. to those who ask

  2038. because Christ

  2039. has done all that

  2040. for us and more.

  2041. We can go forth

  2042. and we can actually

  2043. overcome evil

  2044. with good.

  2045. Let's pray.

  2046. Lord Jesus,

  2047. oh,

  2048. how easy it is

  2049. to talk about

  2050. these things,

  2051. how much harder

2052. it is to do them.

  2053. Father,

  2054. would you give us

  2055. the wisdom

  2056. to know

  2057. in this coming week

  2058. how we might

  2059. overcome evil

  2060. with good?

  2061. Lord,

  2062. many of us

  2063. this morning

  2064. are dealing

  2065. with very complex

  2066. and tricky

  2067. relationships.

  2068. God,

  2069. would you give us

  2070. wisdom

  2071. to live into

  2072. this vision

  2073. of not responding

  2074. with retaliation

  2075. or revenge

2076. but as you taught us,

  2077. Jesus,

  2078. to overcome evil

  2079. with good.

2080. Fill us with your Spirit.

  2081. Show us yourself

  2082. afresh,

  2083. Lord Jesus.

  2084. fill us

  2085. with the hope

  2086. and joy

  2087. and glory

  2088. of who you've

  2089. made us

  2090. that we might

  2091. go and live

  2092. this way

  2093. in the world.

  2094. Pray this

  2095. in your mighty name.

  2096. Amen.

  2097. Well,

  2098. friends,

  2099. let's stand.

  2100. As we respond

  2101. to this text,

  2102. we're going to sing

  2103. a song about

  2104. turning our eyes

  2105. to Jesus

  2106. so that the things

  2107. of this world

  2108. grow dim

  2109. and He grows great

  2110. and that's where

2111. the source of our strength

  2112. comes from,

  2113. seeing Him

  2114. and His beauty

  2115. and who we are

  2116. in Him

2117. so that we can live

  2118. in a way

  2119. that pleases Him.

2120. So let's sing this together.

  2121. Turn your eyes

  2122. upon Jesus

  2123. look full

  2124. in His wonderful face

  2125. and the things

  2126. of earth

  2127. will grow strangely dim

  2128. in the light

  2129. of His glory

  2130. and grace.

  2131. Jesus,

  2132. He's

  2133. turned your eyes

  2134. to the hillsides

  2135. where justice

  2136. and mercy

  2137. and grace

2138. and the Son of God

  2139. gave His life

  2140. for us

  2141. and our measure

  2142. that's death

  2143. was erased.

  2144. Jesus,

  2145. to You

  2146. lift our eyes

  2147. Jesus,

  2148. the Lord

  2149. in our hearts

  2150. we adore You

  2151. behold You

  2152. our Savior

  2153. and our truth

  2154. O Jesus

  2155. we turn our eyes

  2156. to You

  2157. O Jesus

  2158. we turn our eyes

  2159. to You

  2160. O Jesus

  2161. we turn our eyes

  2162. to You

  2163. O Jesus

  2164. turn your eyes

  2165. to the Lord

  2166. and see

  2167. march the Lion

  2168. away

  2169. what a forest

  2170. of fear

  2171. of death

  2172. is gone

  2173. for we carry

  2174. His life

  2175. in our ways

  2176. Jesus

  2177. Jesus

  2178. to You

  2179. lift our eyes

  2180. Jesus

  2181. our glory

  2182. and our prize

  2183. we adore You

  2184. we adore You

  2185. behold You

  2186. our Savior

  2187. ever true

  2188. O Jesus

  2189. we turn our eyes

  2190. to You

  2191. turn your eyes

  2192. to the heavens

  2193. our King

  2194. will return

  2195. for His own

  2196. every knee

  2197. will bow

  2198. every tongue

  2199. will shout

  2200. all glory

  2201. to Jesus

  2202. alone

  2203. Jesus

  2204. to You

  2205. lift our eyes

  2206. Jesus

  2207. our glory

  2208. and our prize

  2209. we adore You

  2210. we adore You

  2211. behold You

  2212. our Savior

  2213. ever true

  2214. O Jesus

  2215. we turn our eyes

  2216. to You

  2217. O Jesus

  2218. to You

  2219. we lift our eyes

  2220. Jesus

  2221. our glory

  2222. and our prize

  2223. we adore You

  2224. behold You

  2225. our Savior

  2226. ever true

  2227. O Jesus

  2228. we turn our eyes

  2229. to You

  2230. O Jesus

  2231. we turn our eyes

  2232. to You

  2233. we turn our eyes

  2234. to You

  2235. we turn our eyes

  2236. to You

  2237. we turn our eyes

  2238. to You

  2239. we turn our eyes

  2240. to You

  2241. we turn our eyes

  2242. to You

  2243. well friends

  2244. let's end with

  2245. the benediction

  2246. the Lord bless you

  2247. and keep you

2248. the Lord make His face

  2249. to shine upon you

2250. and be gracious to you

2251. the Lord lift up His countenance

  2252. upon you

  2253. and give you peace

  2254. God's people said

  2255. amen

  2256. amen friends

  2257. go in peace

  2258. to you

  2259. oh

  2260. none

  2261. amen

  2262. amen

  2263. amen

  2264. okay

  2265. amen

  2266. amen

  2267. amen

  2268. anyways

  2269. amen

  2270. amen

  2271. amen

  2272. amen

  2273. amen

  2274. amen

  2275. amen

  2276. amen

  2277. amen

  2278. amen

  2279. amen

  2280. amen

  2281. amen

  2282. We'll be right back.
