  1. Good morning. It's good to see you all. I want to give a special thanks for those who showed up to

  2. our workday yesterday. We had a great time of fellowship and lots of wonderful things around

  3. the church were done. So, thank you for showing up. When I moved schools in fifth grade, there was a

  4. boy named Ken. He was my nemesis. On the playground, he always found the opportunity to give me a little

  5. extra kick when we played soccer, an extra elbow when we played football or basketball. In the

  6. classroom, there was always an extra snarky comment, scorn and shame. For whatever reason, Ken had decided

  7. that he didn't like me. He was my enemy. I wonder this morning, if I asked you, who is your enemy,

  8. what would you say? Someone who wants not good but harm for you.

  9. When I ask you that question, what popped up in your mind, there might be lots of different categories

  10. that could fill this role. We live in a world where enemies pursue conflict and war and geopolitical

  11. struggles. So, there are nations at war with one another and see each other as enemies.

  12. And at times, those people are neighbors who once lived next to each other but now find themselves

  13. in conflict. We live in a political world today where candidates on both sides are saying the other

  14. is the enemy of that which is good and right. We live in a world where culture wars, where we see others

  15. with differing beliefs and convictions and values as the enemies of what is good.

  16. But it's not just out there in the media, in the conversations. It's also in our personal lives,

  17. isn't it? Whether it be playground bullies, mean girls at school, overbearing bosses, and mean girls,

  18. that's not a gender, that's just a movie reference, okay? Overbearing bosses, difficult neighbors,

  19. and even in our own homes, where we find ourselves feeling like the people that we live with,

  20. our parents, our spouse, our siblings, feel like enemies. Sometimes it's perception, and sometimes

  21. it's reality. How do we treat those who are our enemies in thought, if not in deed?

  22. You know, in our world today, we seem to have been losing our ability to deal with things well.

  23. We live in a culture of polarization, and I think we tend to look at our enemies in one of two ways.

  24. One is, some of us who hate conflict just want to minimize it. We paper over real threats and

  25. conflicts. We try to see only the good and potential good and excuse all sorts of evil. We relativize or

  26. trivialize where there is true ill will towards another and a desire to harm, and we naively hope

  27. that things will simply get better.

  28. Or we demonize our enemies, and we see them as evil incarnate and hate them with passion.

  29. We create an us-them dynamic, call them the other, and then justify horrific treatment again in our

  30. minds, if not in our actions. We embrace hatred and even violence towards them as right and good,

  31. and we make them out to be less than human and treat them as such.

  32. Friends, these paths do not lead anywhere good. They perpetuate evil and hatred in our world.

  33. Is there another way?

  34. This leads us to our passage today in Matthew. We're in chapter 5, verses 43 through 48. If you want to

  35. look in the Pew Bible, that's page 761. And in it, Jesus says there is another way, another path,

  36. a way of His kingdom that He is bringing. And remember, we're in the Sermon on the Mount,

  37. and if you haven't been here, let me just remind you of what Jesus is doing in this section. It's a

  38. section of teaching where Jesus is explaining to His disciples and to the crowds what kind of kingdom

  39. He is going to bring as He is bringing the kingdom of God that He's declaring is at hand. And at the

  40. center of it, as we've seen in verses 19 and 20, He is calling a people of God to live by a new

  41. standard with Him at the center and marked by internal transformation, not merely external

  42. conformity. So His kingdom is a distinctly Christ-centered, Christ-like, and Christ-displaying

  43. kingdom. And from verse 20 on to our passage now, Jesus has laid out six contrasts.

  44. You have heard it said, but I say to you, six ways in which the people that He was preaching to

  45. might normally think was right and good. And Jesus is saying, my kingdom is different than that.

  46. And let me explain to you how it is different. And so we come to the last of those six

  47. this morning, verses 43 through 48. Let's go ahead and read that together, and then we'll pray for

  48. God's help as we listen to His Word. Matthew 5, 43. You have heard that it was said,

  49. you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those

  50. who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For He makes His Son rise on

  51. the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love

  52. you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your

  53. brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must

  54. be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. Please pray with me. Oh, Lord, we ask for Your help this

  55. morning. Lord, as we look at this Word, as we listen to it, I pray that You would give us humble hearts

  56. and soft hearts to receive this Word. Lord, it is a challenge to the way that we typically live and

  57. think in this world, and I pray for Your help this morning. Lord, I pray that You would help me to speak

  58. as I should, and I pray for all of us that we would receive Your Word, and that we would obey it,

  59. and that we would follow it. And Lord, we pray that You would be our help in that, and we pray

  60. these things in Jesus' name. Amen. Jesus shows us a way forward in the midst of enemies and hatred,

  61. and it is the way simply of love. And so my outline is very simple for those of you who

  62. are taking notes. First, Jesus calls us to love our enemies. That's what He calls us to. That's what

  63. this passage is about. And the second point will be the foundation of our love for our enemies,

  64. how it is that we can actually do this. So let's first explore for a little bit in verses 43 and 44,

  65. Jesus called to love our enemies. We've seen this pattern before. Again, this is the sixth one.

  66. You have heard that it was said, but I say to you. Now listen, if you went back and you looked

  67. through the whole Old Testament, you won't find the verse, you should hate your enemy. It's not

  68. actually there. But by the first century, it was a rabbinical half-step from the truths that are in

  69. Scripture, where there was a lot of emphasis on the special treatment of the Jewish people.

  70. There was a, in the Old Testament, a national nature that had implications for how the people

  71. of God interacted with other people and other nations around them. And there was a pattern that

  72. others were to be distinguished from the Jewish people, and that the idolatry of the nations around

  73. them was something to be resisted and to be despised by the people of God. And you see these things in

  74. the Old Testament. And so from these attitudes, there was in the first century, it seems, a half-step into

  75. it's okay for you to hate your enemies. In fact, it might even be seen by some as a call.

  76. To love your own is to hate the other. Jesus says, this is not the kingdom that I am here to bring.

  77. The distinctive of love in my kingdom is that you will love even your enemies. And look, this love here,

  78. it's not a feeling, right? It's not the swoon that comes over you when you see that cute guy or girl

  79. across the room and think, ah, I'm in love with it. It's not this unbidden feeling that rises up in the

  80. romantic well of our heart. No. What here love means is a disposition. It is a combination, and it does have

  81. feeling for it, but it is more than that. It is also a will and a choice and a thought to pursue the good of

  82. others to cherish their well-being and to seek to do them good. If you were here last week, Pastor Nick

  83. preached on verses 33 through 38 talking about not retaliating. And if you remember, there were some

  84. specifics there about blessing and not cursing, about turning the other cheek, about going this extra mile,

  85. about giving another cloak. This is a heart disposition towards another to say,

  86. though you are my enemy, I will not choose to do you harm, but instead I will choose to do you good.

  87. D.A. Carson, one of the commentators who writes on this passage, says, defines it this way,

  88. this love is a generous, warm, costly self-sacrifice for another's good. And if you see, Jesus goes on,

  89. he says, you know what the first application of this is? To pray for them. To see the other person

  90. in view of God and to want God's good for them. Let me ask you a question. Have you ever tried

  91. to pray for someone who has or is doing harm to you? Have you ever prayed for someone who can only show

  92. scorn and hatred? Commentator John Stott says, it's impossible to pray for someone without loving him.

  93. And it is impossible to go on praying for him without discovering that our love for him grows

  94. and matures. When we pray for someone, we begin to see them through God's eyes.

  95. And that means we see them differently.

  96. In verses 46 and 47 of our passage, Jesus says, this is distinctive because even the tax collectors

  97. who were the worst of the worst, they were viewed as the moral reprobates, they were rebels, they were

  98. unscrupulous, they had nothing good to recommend them. Even they, right? Even they love those who love them.

  99. Don't we love people who love us? That's a great plan. Jesus says,

  100. my call to love is greater than that. Verse 47, he says, even the Gentiles, that is those who don't

  101. even know God at all and have no reason to think that they should treat someone else differently

  102. because of God, don't they also greet people in the street who greet them? People within their tribe,

  103. people within their group?

  104. So Jesus says we are to love and to pray for those who are our enemies and who seek to persecute us.

  105. What might this look like? I've got a whole range here. We're going to give examples for a little bit.

  106. And maybe we can ask the Lord to help us see where maybe this might be applicable to us.

  107. We're going to start with the easy ones, and then we'll move to the harder ones. So,

  108. it might be sharing your study guide with a fellow student who doesn't want to do the work,

  109. but who desperately wants to do better than you.

  110. It might be showing kindness and serving a family member, even when they have been rude or selfish,

  111. even when they have hurt you.

  112. It might be working hard for your lab supervisor when you know that all they're going to do is take

  113. credit for it, and when they take advantage of you in the process.

  114. It might mean going out at the first snowfall of this year and shoveling the sidewalk not only in

  115. front of your house, but in front of your neighbor's house, the neighbor that complains about your kids

  116. who are too loud and who always leaves the trash out and who always plays music late at night

  117. and who just seems like they have it out for you to go shovel their sidewalk as well.

  118. It's election season.

  119. How do we love those who seem to be our opponents in the political sphere?

  120. We can reject demeaning, cruel, and offensive language.

  121. We can treat those who are opponents with a different point of view rather than seeing them

  122. as someone to scorn or despise.

  123. We can work to move dialogue in substantive interaction rather than name-calling.

  124. We need to see others, even those who deeply disagree with us, through the eyes of God.

  125. Friends, consider some of us may have enemies where the harm that has been done or is being done

  126. is much deeper.

  127. Consider the biblical example of Joseph.

  128. You know Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob?

  129. He was the favored son, and his brothers envied him for it.

  130. In fact, they'd envied him for it so much that they captured him.

  131. They were going to kill him, but then they decided to change their mind and sold him into slavery instead.

  132. You can read the rest of Genesis 37 through 50 to find out what happened to Joseph,

  133. but it turns out in the end that Joseph, by God's grace,

  134. is promoted to a position of power and influence in Egypt,

  135. and a famine comes, and Joseph's brothers and family were starving in a famine.

  136. And they go to Egypt because it was the only place to get grain,

  137. and they show up, and there the man who has the keys to their survival

  138. is the very brother that they had hated.

  139. And he has some fun little tricks along the way,

  140. but at the end of the day, he does them good.

  141. He blesses them,

  142. and he embraces them.

  143. Here's another more extreme case.

  144. If you're familiar with the story of Corrie Ten Boom,

  145. she was a Holocaust survivor.

  146. She was a follower of Jesus.

  147. After the war, she taught about God's grace and faithfulness,

  148. about forgiveness.

  149. And she tells this story.

  150. It's a little long, but I think it's worth it.

  151. So, it was in a church service in Munich

  152. that I saw him, a former SS man,

  153. who had stood guard at the shower room door

  154. in the processing center at Ravensbrück.

  155. He was the first of our actual jailers

  156. that I had seen since that time,

  157. and suddenly it was all there,

  158. the room full of mocking men,

  159. the heaps of clothing,

  160. Betsy's pain-blanched face.

  161. He came up to me as the church was emptying,

  162. beaming and bowing.

  163. How grateful I am for your message, Fraulein, he said,

  164. to think that, as you say,

  165. he has washed my sin away.

  166. His hand was thrust out to shake mine,

  167. and I, who had preached so often

  168. to the people of Blomendal,

  169. the need to forgive,

  170. kept my hand at my side.

  171. Even as the angry, vengeful thoughts

  172. boiled through me,

  173. I saw the sin in them.

  174. And Jesus Christ had died for this man.

  175. Was I going to ask for more?

  176. Lord Jesus, I prayed,

  177. forgive me and help me to forgive him.

  178. I tried to smile.

  179. I struggled to raise my hand.

  180. I could not.

  181. I felt nothing,

  182. not the slightest spark of warmth or charity.

  183. And so again, I breathed a silent prayer.

  184. Jesus, I prayed,

  185. I cannot forgive him.

  186. Give me your forgiveness.

  187. And as I took his hand,

  188. the most incredible thing happened.

  189. From my shoulder, along my arm,

  190. and through my hand,

  191. a current seemed to pass from me to him

  192. while into my heart

  193. sprang a love for this stranger

  194. that almost overwhelmed me.

  195. And so I discovered that it was not

  196. on our forgiveness anymore

  197. than on our goodness

  198. that the world's healing hinges,

  199. but on his, that is on God's,

  200. when he tells us to love our enemies,

  201. he gives, along with the command,

  202. the love itself.

  203. And I'll tell you, friends,

  204. not every transformation happens in a moment

  205. like it happens with Corey.

  206. Sometimes it's by repeated acts of kindness.

  207. When we don't want to be kind,

  208. that our hearts change.

  209. Sometimes it's daily determining

  210. to do good to another

  211. where transformation happens,

  212. and it doesn't happen all at once.

  213. But when we started,

  214. we felt only anger,

  215. only hatred,

  216. only desire for revenge.

  217. Slowly, as we do good

  218. and think rightly,

  219. God changes our hearts,

  220. and we are able to,

  221. as she did,

  222. forgive

  223. and love

  224. even our enemies.

  225. And friends,

  226. if this kind of love is possible

  227. in these extreme cases,

  228. how much more

  229. in our everyday lives?

  230. Jesus calls us to love our enemies.

  231. Now,

  232. I do want to give a few pastoral reflections

  233. because,

  234. and I want to do this carefully

  235. because I don't want to

  236. unburden you.

  237. We all sit under a burden

  238. of this passage right now, right?

  239. This is hard.

  240. But I do want to make sure

  241. that I clarify

  242. because this has sometimes been used

  243. in ways that are unhelpful.

  244. First,

  245. love here does not simply mean

  246. cultural values of tolerance

  247. without discernment.

  248. Loving our enemies

  249. doesn't mean that we call sin good.

  250. We still need to call sin sin.

  251. Love does not mean

  252. that we don't appropriately address evil.

  253. If you are in an abusive situation,

  254. it is right for you

  255. to remove yourself from that

  256. rather than staying.

  257. Right?

  258. It doesn't mean you don't love them

  259. if you remove yourself

  260. from the abuse.

  261. That's on a personal level.

  262. On a civil rights level.

  263. It is good and right

  264. to work for societal change,

  265. for laws to change.

  266. It is good to advocate

  267. for that which is better.

  268. That's not

  269. hating your enemy

  270. to advocate for those kinds of change.

  271. But recognize that the best

  272. of the civil rights movement

  273. had to do with

  274. loving our enemies

  275. in the midst of it.

  276. Maybe this is repeating

  277. what I just said.

  278. Loving your enemies

  279. does not mean avoiding conflict.

  280. Sometimes it means

  281. speaking painful truths.

  282. Sometimes it does mean

  283. standing up for yourself.

  284. Sometimes it does mean

  285. pursuing that which is right.

  286. but it is always

  287. in a spirit

  288. of loving the other

  289. in the process.

  290. It is always

  291. in the spirit

  292. of wanting to

  293. desire to do good,

  294. not to punish,

  295. not to condemn,

  296. not to do harm.

  297. And finally,

  298. I won't say a lot about this,

  299. but it doesn't remove

  300. governments and institutions

  301. from their right place

  302. of doing justice

  303. in the world,

  304. which even may mean

  305. prosecuting war.

  306. Pastor Nick talked more

  307. about that last week.

  308. If you have more questions

  309. about that.

  310. But I want you to recognize

  311. that loving your enemies

  312. doesn't simply mean

  313. being a doormat

  314. and letting anything

  315. happen to you

  316. no matter what.

  317. But it does mean

  318. a fundamental

  319. perspective shift

  320. where even those

  321. who wish to do you harm,

  322. you look at them

  323. and you see them

  324. through the eyes of God.

  325. And therefore,

  326. you are able to love them

  327. not because they are lovable,

  328. but because

  329. of who God is.

  330. And this, of course,

  331. leads us to our second point.

  332. There is a key

  333. in the middle of this,

  334. verse 45,

  335. that we need to look at

  336. for a minute.

  337. I'm going to start

  338. and read 44 and 45 again

  339. just so we remember this.

  340. I say to you,

  341. love your enemies

  342. and pray for those

  343. who persecute you

  344. so that you may be

  345. sons of your Father

  346. who is in heaven.

  347. For He makes His Son

  348. rise on the evil

  349. and on the good

  350. and sends rain

  351. on the just

  352. and on the unjust.

  353. The reason that we are able

  354. to love our enemy

  355. is because God

  356. shows this love

  357. for His enemies as well.

  358. God looks at the world

  359. and He shows

  360. this common grace

  361. of the sun

  362. rising every morning.

  363. He sends rain

  364. so that the fields

  365. will grow

  366. and the crops

  367. will be produced

  368. and people won't starve.

  369. He gives basic necessities

  370. in these ways.

  371. Knowing that the world

  372. that He looks at

  373. hates Him,

  374. does not honor Him,

  375. rejects Him,

  376. and yet God does this.

  377. He perfectly knows

  378. and judges all things.

  379. He knows the thoughts

  380. of our hearts,

  381. let alone the actions.

  382. He's not blind.

  383. He's not foolish.

  384. But He is a God

  385. who blesses

  386. the just

  387. and the unjust.

  388. And Jesus says

  389. this is the core

  390. of how we

  391. can love our enemies.

  392. Now,

  393. some of you

  394. are like me

  395. and you're thinking,

  396. alright,

  397. Pastor Matt,

  398. that just sounds

  399. a little too easy.

  400. And not just easy

  401. because like,

  402. it's easy,

  403. but the Bible

  404. is more complicated,

  405. isn't it?

  406. It is.

  407. So,

  408. Psalm 5,

    Psalms 5:4–6

  409. verses 4-6.

  410. Josh,

  411. if we can get that

  412. up on the screen.

  413. The psalmist says this

  414. about God,

  415. for you are not a God

  416. who delights in wickedness.

  417. Evil may not dwell with you.

  418. The boastful

  419. shall not stand

  420. before your eyes.

  421. You hate all evildoers.

  422. You destroy those

  423. who speak lies.

  424. The Lord abhors

  425. the bloodthirsty

  426. and the deceitful man.

  427. So,

  428. this is one of the most

  429. clear places,

  430. but we know this.

  431. God sees evil.

  432. God judges evil.

  433. He judges people.

  434. And He has this recognition.

  435. So,

  436. how do we,

  437. how do we bring this

  438. all together?

  439. How do we understand this?

  440. Well,

  441. it's really helpful.

  442. And maybe you remember this

  443. because we talked about it before,

  444. I think sometime this summer.

  445. D.A. Carson has written a book

  446. called The Difficult Doctrine

  447. of the Love of God.

  448. And if you haven't read it,

  449. it's a very wonderful book

  450. because what it does

  451. is it says,

  452. God is love,

  453. but the way God loves

  454. is actually more complex

  455. and nuanced

  456. than we tend to think of it.

  457. He distinguishes a number

  458. of different kinds of loves.

  459. He says,

  460. God has a providential love

  461. over all that He has made.

  462. That's the kind of love

  463. that Jesus is particularly

  464. referring to here.

  465. The sun rises,

  466. the rain falls,

  467. He sustains the world

  468. so it doesn't fall apart.

  469. He goes on,

  470. He says,

  471. God also has a love

  472. that is a salvific stance

  473. towards His fallen world.

  474. So the famous verse,

  475. John 3, 16,

  476. for God so loved the world.

  477. And when John says world,

  478. he means the world

  479. in rebellion against Him.

  480. He means the world

  481. that's rejecting Him right now.

  482. God so loved the world

  483. that He sent His only Son

  484. so that whoever believes in Him

  485. would not perish

  486. but gain eternal life.

  487. So His heart is for salvation

  488. even as He recognizes

  489. that there is judgment

  490. and death

  491. for those who don't receive Jesus.

  492. Right?

  493. There is also in the Bible

  494. a particular love

  495. that God has for His people.

  496. As Carson says it,

  497. a particular effective

  498. selecting love

  499. towards His elect.

  500. And then He goes on,

  501. He says,

  502. and it certainly is clear

  503. that there are places

  504. in Scripture

  505. where God loves

  506. obedient believers,

  507. those who follow His commands,

  508. in a particular way

  509. that He doesn't love

  510. the disobedience in us

  511. without upending

  512. the other kinds of love

  513. that we have.

  514. And look,

  515. we know this.

  516. If you're a parent,

  517. you know this.

  518. You love your child

  519. but you hate

  520. what they do sometimes.

  521. Right?

  522. We do,

  523. and it's the same thing

  524. with our friends.

  525. We all have this nuance

  526. in our love

  527. where,

  528. hey,

  529. I'm for you

  530. but man,

  531. this drives me crazy

  532. or this isn't right.

  533. And God has that kind of love.

  534. So when we go back

  535. to thinking about

  536. how is it

  537. that God loves,

  538. how then is God's disposition

  539. towards His enemies?

  540. And it's true that then

  541. God both loves

  542. and hates His enemies

  543. in some ways

  544. because He loves them

  545. in this providential love

  546. for all people.

  547. He loves them

  548. in this desire,

  549. this heart stance

  550. for salvation for them.

  551. But He hates them

  552. because of their

  553. insistent rebellion

  554. and ongoing

  555. rejection of Him.

  556. Right?

  557. God's love

  558. that brings this

  559. providential care

  560. doesn't mean that everyone,

  561. He saves everyone.

  562. God loves the world.

  563. So we need to think

  564. carefully about

  565. what it means

  566. when we say

  567. God loves the world

  568. and when we think about

  569. what it means for us

  570. to love our enemies.

  571. enemies.

  572. But our love for enemies

  573. should imitate His,

  574. desiring to do them good,

  575. seeking to show them

  576. the Father in heaven

  577. who is providing for them

  578. and who has provided

  579. most of all

  580. Jesus for them.

  581. And of course,

  582. this is the kind

  583. of sonship then

  584. that God calls us to.

  585. You see this in verse 46

  586. where He says,

  587. do this so that

  588. you may be sons.

  589. And sons here

  590. is a family term

  591. saying you're going to

  592. bear the resemblance

  593. of those that you come from.

  594. Right?

  595. So,

  596. He's saying that

  597. if we have a love

  598. for our enemies,

  599. we are showing

  600. that this is like

  601. the God that we serve.

  602. Right?

  603. And look,

  604. we need to recognize

  605. how distinctive this is

  606. because there are

  607. secular reconciliation

  608. people out there.

  609. And you know what?

  610. They're doing good work.

  611. I don't want to despise them

  612. or say that it's bad.

  613. But,

  614. they will resort

  615. to principles

  616. of human dignity

  617. and mutual respect.

  618. Things that we would agree on

  619. based on

  620. this is how we ought

  621. to treat one another

  622. because God created us

  623. all in His image.

  624. Right?

  625. And so,

  626. this is a good principle

  627. that's out there

  628. that gives a basis

  629. for loving

  630. even our enemies.

  631. This is at the basis

  632. of some of the

  633. reconciliation processes

  634. that happen

  635. in some of the most

  636. war-torn parts

  637. of the world.

  638. It's also what happens

  639. in marriage counseling

  640. and everywhere

  641. in between.

  642. But,

  643. at the end of the day,

  644. if that's all you have,

  645. what you're bringing

  646. to the table

  647. is a pursuit

  648. of reconciliation

  649. that says along lines of,

  650. don't you want

  651. to treat them

  652. the way you want

  653. them to treat you?

  654. And that's a good principle.

  655. But the Christian call

  656. is deeper than that.

  657. To be like God

  658. in the way

  659. that He loves the world

  660. is greater than this.

  661. And by the way,

  662. this is what verse 48 means.

  663. Verse 48 does not mean

  664. we're meant to be

  665. morally perfect

  666. in every way.

  667. It does not mean

  668. that we're suddenly set

  669. to this new standard

  670. of complete perfection.

  671. The word there is,

  672. if you know it,

  673. telos.

  674. It's complete

  675. to be fulfilled

  676. in what we were meant

  677. to be.

  678. And what Jesus

  679. is saying here is,

  680. as we love our enemies,

  681. we are moving into

  682. and closer to

  683. what God's original

  684. creation intent was,

  685. what His redemptive plan

  686. is for us,

  687. and what we will look like

  688. in heaven.

  689. And so,

  690. this is why we do this.

  691. The true power,

  692. though,

  693. is in the gospel.

  694. Bonnie read

  695. from Romans earlier,

  696. but I'm going to read it again

  697. because this is where

  698. we as Christians

  699. understand

  700. how it is

  701. that we can love

  702. our enemies

  703. the way God

  704. loves our enemies.

  705. Romans 5,

    Romans 5:6

  706. verse 6,

  707. says this,

  708. For while we were still weak

  709. at the right time,

  710. Christ died

  711. for the ungodly.

  712. For one will scarcely die

  713. for a righteous person,

  714. though perhaps

  715. for a good person

  716. one would dare

  717. even to die.

  718. But God shows

  719. His love for us

  720. in that while we were

  721. still sinners,

  722. Christ died for us.

  723. Since, therefore,

  724. we have now been justified

  725. by His blood,

  726. much more

  727. shall we be saved

  728. by Him

  729. from the wrath of God.

  730. for if we were enemies,

  731. if while we were enemies

  732. we were reconciled to God

  733. by the death of His Son,

  734. much more now

  735. that we are reconciled

  736. shall we be saved

  737. by His life.

  738. More than that,

  739. we also rejoice in God

  740. through our Lord Jesus Christ

  741. through whom

  742. we have now received

  743. reconciliation.

  744. Friends,

  745. this is really simple

  746. and really hard.

  747. the gospel tells us

  748. that we

  749. were and are

  750. the enemies of God

  751. in our sin

  752. and deserve nothing

  753. but judgment

  754. for that sin.

  755. Until we remember

  756. that in our sin

  757. we are rebels

  758. and haters of God,

  759. we will never understand

  760. what He has done for us.

  761. We will never have

  762. the humility

  763. that we need

  764. in order to love

  765. our enemies.

  766. Because friends,

  767. it was not because

  768. of our goodness

  769. that God loved us.

  770. The problem that we have

  771. is that we think

  772. our enemies are really bad

  773. and we're not as bad

  774. as they are.

  775. And they deserve

  776. something worse

  777. than we do.

  778. But God says

  779. and the gospel says

  780. while we were His enemies,

  781. Christ died for us.

  782. While you were His enemy,

  783. Christ died for you.

  784. And He did it

  785. because He loves you.

  786. He did it

  787. to pay the penalty

  788. for your sin.

  789. He did it

  790. by bearing

  791. what we deserve.

  792. The judgment

  793. and the despising

  794. and the rejection

  795. and the scorn

  796. that we want

  797. to inflict

  798. on our enemies

  799. that God rightly

  800. would inflict on us

  801. because of our sin,

  802. Jesus bore that

  803. for us

  804. on the cross

  805. so that we might

  806. be loved

  807. undeservingly.

  808. So that we might

  809. be accepted

  810. and embraced

  811. and cherished

  812. by God.

  813. God.

  814. And if God

  815. loves us

  816. like that,

  817. then

  818. we can begin

  819. to understand

  820. what it might

  821. look like

  822. for us

  823. to love

  824. our enemies

  825. the way

  826. God does.

  827. Friends,

  828. this is the good news

  829. of the gospel

  830. that we have been

  831. loved like this

  832. and not only loved

  833. but given

  834. a new life

  835. in Christ

  836. where Christ

  837. himself,

  838. the lover

  839. of our souls

  840. indwells us

  841. so that

  842. we might

  843. love

  844. with the love

  845. that we have

  846. been loved.

  847. A love

  848. even for

  849. our enemies.

  850. We're going to

  851. close in a minute

  852. with a great hymn

  853. and can it be.

  854. I'm going to read

  855. the first verse

  856. and then we'll go

  857. to prayer

  858. and then we'll

  859. sing this.

  860. And can it be

  861. that I should

  862. gain

  863. an interest

  864. in the Savior's

  865. blood?

  866. Died he

  867. for me

  868. who caused

  869. his pain

  870. for me

  871. who him

  872. to death

  873. pursued?

  874. Amazing love,

  875. how can it be

  876. that thou,

  877. my God,

  878. shouldst die

  879. for me?

  880. Let's pray.

  881. O Lord,

  882. we pray this

  883. morning

  884. for help

  885. for Lord,

  886. our hearts

  887. do not

  888. easily move

  889. in these ways.

  890. Lord,

  891. we want to

  892. have revenge.

  893. We want to

  894. strike back

  895. when we are

  896. struck.

  897. We want to

  898. treat our

  899. enemies with

  900. hatred,

  901. with scorn.

  902. Lord,

  903. we confess

  904. this to

  905. you.

  906. And Lord,

  907. even if we

  908. don't want to

  909. do those

  910. things,

  911. Lord,

  912. we desire

  913. just distance

  914. and ignoring

  915. them.

  916. But Lord,

  917. you have

  918. called us

  919. to love

  920. even our

  921. enemies.

  922. Help us,

  923. Lord.

  924. Help us

  925. to know

  926. your gospel

  927. deeply

  928. enough

  929. to understand

  930. how this

  931. could be

  932. so.

  933. And by

  934. your Spirit,

  935. fill us

  936. with the

  937. knowledge

  938. of your

  939. love for

  940. us

  941. so that

  942. we might

  943. love others,

  944. even our

  945. enemies,

  946. in your

  947. name.

  948. We pray

  949. this in

  950. Jesus' name.

  951. Amen.

  952. Amen.
