  1. We'll dive in together.

  2. Our Father in Heaven, we come to you, Lord, and we pray that your Spirit would be with us, Lord.

  3. Father, that we would begin to resemble you and your love for us, welcoming us,

  4. and Lord, that you would make us a people that would resemble your own character

  5. as we increasingly model Jesus' love for others.

  6. Help us do that, Lord, in our time together.

  7. We pray that this would be just an encouraging, edifying discussion together

  8. where we can sort of bear each other's burdens and we can talk together and be transparent.

  9. And I pray this to your honor and glory in Jesus' name.

  10. Amen.

  11. Amen.

  12. Amen.

  13. Amen.

  14. I'm Kirsten Walker.

  15. There's a couple of you I don't know.

  16. I am in supervisory role.

  17. I hate saying in charge of.

  18. There's many people, but I oversee the fellowship ministry of this church.

  19. I want you to take a look, if you can, if you have to stand up, at what's on this table up here.

  20. And this is not a trick question.

  21. Volunteer, tell me what you see.

  22. There's some dishes here.

  23. There's some paper goods here.

  24. Granola bar and a water bottle.

  25. And there's a watch right here.

  26. Tell me what you see.

  27. What do you think this is?

  28. What's your guess?

  29. No wrong answers.

  30. It could be a simple...

  31. Preparation for eating.

  32. Right.

  33. Preparation for eating.

  34. Right.

  35. Fellowshiping together.

  36. Sharing a meal.

  37. What else do you see?

  38. Formal versus informal.

  39. Formal versus informal.

  40. You've got a very formal place setting here with China dishes.

  41. You've got a paper plate.

  42. A granola bar and a water bottle.

  43. And a watch.

  44. Over the next four weeks, we're going to talk a lot about different elements of hospitality and what it means.

  45. It could mean entertaining in your home with your best dishes.

  46. By the way, these are from Norway and they are my best dishes.

  47. There are some...

  48. I didn't bring the antique antiques, but these are very, very special dishes.

  49. Including silver.

  50. It all matches.

  51. It's called bundemunster, which means farmer's rose.

  52. Believe it or not, a place setting when my grandmother started collecting them cost $5.

  53. for a complete place setting.

  54. It was considered everyday dishes.

  55. Then you have what we do here at church.

  56. Paper goods.

  57. Right.

  58. Well, that could also be...

  59. We do this often, right?

  60. We share meals and we use paper goods.

  61. Also, fellowship or hospitality can mean something as simple as giving someone a bottle of water in a granola bar

  62. when they're a little bit hungry.

  63. But what's this one all about?

  64. I'm not giving away my watch.

  65. All right?

  66. Somebody might need to tell the time.

  67. What could this have to do with hospitality or fellowship?

  68. Hospitality.

  69. What's a watch?

  70. It takes a lot of time.

  71. It takes time.

  72. It can take a lot of time.

  73. It can also take five minutes to say hello to someone and give them your time to listen,

  74. to extend a welcome, to greet someone at church on a Sunday morning.

  75. That's what we're going to be talking about over the next four weeks.

  76. Yes.

  77. And this is our class, Hospitality, Evangelism, and the Great Commission.

  78. And Christians are to be witnesses.

  79. From the beginning of Acts, Jesus said to his disciples,

  80. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea, in Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

  81. And the Great Commission is you will go make disciples,

  82. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you,

  83. baptizing them in the one name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  84. So as a question for us to consider together,

  85. what do you think will be the key to fulfilling the Great Commission in the 21st century?

  86. Here are some ideas.

  87. We're not going to lecture to you.

  88. This is interactive.

  89. You have the right to say whatever comes up on your mind.

  90. A sleek website.

  91. How about that?

  92. Anything else?

  93. Nothing.

  94. I don't know.

  95. I would say developing relationships with people.

  96. Okay.

  97. All right.

  98. Yeah.

  99. Yeah.

  100. Relationships.

  101. Thanks, Amanda.

  102. Mm-hmm.

  103. Friendly conversation.

  104. Mm-hmm.

  105. Yeah.

  106. Yeah.

  107. Friendly conversation.

  108. Being friendly to others.

  109. I think going off of what you said with the internet,

  110. a huge portion of the things that I do are completely through social media.

  111. Okay.

  112. So I think...

  113. with our culture,

  114. we're at that with...

  115. Mm-hmm.

  116. social media and various...

  117. It's a huge tool.

  118. It is.

  119. Yeah.

  120. Yeah.

  121. I think it's Christians practicing the virtues of transparency,

  122. honesty, genuineness, and hospitality.

  123. Hmm.

  124. Thanks, brother.

  125. All right.

  126. Class is done.

  127. Yeah.

  128. Okay.

  129. I mean, that hits the nail on the head.

  130. It does.

  131. Yes.

  132. It does.

  133. Exactly.

  134. It does.

  135. It does.

  136. And our contention in this class is the key to 21st century evangelism is going to be the

  137. church showing hospitality.

  138. That's an overstatement.

  139. I mean, that's a big, large statement that we're making.

  140. But that is our conviction, is that hospitality will be the key to evangelism in the 21st century

  141. in a post-Christian culture of ours.

  142. So, Kirsten, you were the one that, and Kathy and Jess, you were the ones that came to the

  143. elders and said, we need to have this class.

  144. So, why are we teaching this course?

  145. Why now?

  146. I started coming here in 2007.

  147. I came from a big church that was very family-oriented, that had multi-generations.

  148. Everything that we did intergenerationally was usually revolving around food.

  149. There's nothing like breaking bread together, sharing a meal with someone.

  150. It's a common denominator.

  151. We all need to eat.

  152. It doesn't matter whether we agree on anything.

  153. We need to eat to survive.

  154. And I felt like this church was struggling in some ways with practicing hospitality and

  155. showing that we can fellowship among various different ethnic groups, social groups, people

  156. from different religious and denominational backgrounds.

  157. And so, it really started coming with this conversation with Kathy Abbott when I met her.

  158. A pastor's wife, Jess Serbo, who is a little bit younger than me, but also grew up in a church with a lot of hospitality.

  159. And we were struggling, like, how do we express to people, we really need to do this?

  160. Because people respond when they're welcomed in the Lord's name, in fellowship, within this new church that they might be coming to for the first time

  161. or they've been coming to for 10 years.

  162. But there's one key difference, and this is a question for you.

  163. What's the difference between hospitality and entertaining?

  164. She raised her hand.

  165. Hospitality comes from the heart.

  166. Entertaining is an event you structure and make happen.

  167. Hospitality happens.

  168. Yeah.

  169. And that's a misconception a lot of people even in this culture have.

  170. That they, well, I can't entertain.

  171. Well, I'm not a clown up on stage.

  172. I'm not a full production.

  173. That's different.

  174. And it doesn't mean you don't do entertaining.

  175. It doesn't mean that you can't ever use that word.

  176. But what we're striving for here at Trinity, and I hope many of you do in your own homes,

  177. is to offer hospitality and not be hung up on entertaining.

  178. Because there's a whole different connotation to that word.

  179. Kirsten, what would you say to someone who might be thinking,

  180. well, it's obvious that you're gifted in hospitality.

  181. As for me, I'm hospitality challenged.

  182. And not only that, it's like you're asking me to fly.

  183. It's not that I, it's hard, it's just impossible.

  184. Like, I can't be hospitable.

  185. I can't do it.

  186. I think, I think people have said that to me before.

  187. I can't do what you do.

  188. Well, thank God you can't.

  189. When the music team comes down during one of the events and they say,

  190. oh, we're so glad that you've got the hot coffee or the tea or the cold water or the Tylenol at times.

  191. I'm like, you know what?

  192. I'm glad you do music.

  193. I make coffee.

  194. I can't do that.

  195. God's given us specific talents and gifts.

  196. I am not gifted in music.

  197. I love it.

  198. But don't ask me a B from a C to, you know, it just, I don't know.

  199. I know in grades what A, B, C, D is.

  200. And that's, that's something, you know, God made us all different.

  201. I'm glad you're not like me.

  202. We don't need another me.

  203. We really don't.

  204. We don't need another you or you or you because it would be really, really boring.

  205. And we'd probably never had a good cup of coffee.

  206. So, Kirsten, just to be clear, you're saying you don't need to be an expert at cooking to be hospitable?

  207. No.

  208. That's where social media comes in, Jamie.

  209. Okay.

  210. All right.

  211. Let's make it short.

  212. Because we follow now in the 21st century too much.

  213. Martha Stewart, Pinterest, Marie Kondo, Tyler Florence, Food Network, British Baking Show.

  214. And they show you.

  215. Just look at all the magazines.

  216. There are still magazines at the checkout counters.

  217. They all cost an arm and a leg to buy now.

  218. Look at the spreads that they put out there.

  219. Did anybody on their magazine put this for Thanksgiving?

  220. It's almost like, uh-oh, you better not do that.

  221. So, there is a difference in the culture where social media plays a role in sometimes misrepresenting to us as Christians.

  222. If we're always trying to keep up with Martha Stewart or any other celebrity that you say, we're never going to make it.

  223. Because there's always the next thing that comes around.

  224. Or the next, I don't know, what is it right now?

  225. It was kale for how many years, right?

  226. And now it's like, you know, you have to have the right kind of truffles or you have to have the right kind of coffee or you have to have the right whatever, turmeric and everything right now.

  227. And none of those things are bad.

  228. But when you're trying to keep up with all of that, you're not offering hospitality anymore.

  229. And it becomes hard.

  230. And that's why people quit.

  231. I'm not doing this anymore.

  232. I'm going out to eat.

  233. Yeah.

  234. Which is okay too.

  235. So, it seems like one of the challenges is that when we think of hospitality and when we do hospitality, we're aiming to impress rather than to bless others.

  236. And we often fall back into that category of entertainment that you're describing.

  237. And that kind of, that makes sense because if you think about the popular definitions of hospitality in our culture, well, the hospitality industry is what?

  238. It's hotels.

  239. It's restaurants.

  240. It's Six Flags and theme parks and tourism, right?

  241. Merriam-Webster defines hospitality as the activity or business of providing services to guests in hotels, restaurants, bars, et cetera, right?

  242. So, you're offering a service to others.

  243. And it's entertaining, special occasions.

  244. But the Bible seems to have a different view of what hospitality involves.

  245. And that's where we want to dig into this class together.

  246. You know, elders are called to be hospitable.

  247. That's one of the qualifications for being an elder.

  248. So, maybe what that means is, okay, each elder needs to have all the church members over for dinner at least once a year.

  249. Maybe that's one of the qualifications for being an elder.

  250. And, you know, there's an element of truth there, right, that an elder is meant to be welcoming.

  251. But these are truncated views of what the Bible means by hospitality.

  252. And so, the early church meant in homes, so it meant welcoming others.

  253. And before we go to the scriptures together, how would you describe the biblical meaning of hospitality?

  254. We kind of heard it already.

  255. It comes from the heart, right?

  256. Anything else?

  257. Like, how would you put contours around biblical hospitality?

  258. What are we talking about here?

  259. So, I think the word welcome and hospitable go together very nicely.

  260. So, a hospitable elder is a welcoming elder.

  261. Or any other churchman.

  262. Yeah.

  263. Yeah.

  264. I think of Pastor Greg.

  265. He was like a bird dog looking for people to welcome in the church.

  266. And that's him being hospitable.

  267. And he was really wonderful at that and an example to us.

  268. So, yeah, welcoming is definitely one aspect of hospitality.

  269. So, I grew up in a home where we never had company in, except for my mother's sister, who she fought with.

  270. And there was a big, lots of tears and arguing every holiday.

  271. Mm-hmm.

  272. So, my experience of having people into my home was from the stress.

  273. Because I just needed to tell her what was going to happen.

  274. Now, the Lord has brought me a long way since those days.

  275. But, I think that Greg and Jane were one of the people who kind of showed me.

  276. They pull napkins out of the drawer, none of them match.

  277. Throw them on the table.

  278. But, what they were doing was setting aside time to get to know you.

  279. Mm-hmm.

  280. Making room for you.

  281. Mm-hmm.

  282. Learning who you are.

  283. And then seeing where the conversation could go in terms of the gospel.

  284. So, I just really am grateful for them and for all the experiences of hospitality that I've had since I've come to the Lord.

  285. Amen.

  286. Thank you.

  287. I think one of the sub-definitions in the dictionary is welcoming to strangers and guests.

  288. Mm-hmm.

  289. And that's what many of us do.

  290. But, what Susan just said is a very viable point of why some people shy away from hospitality.

  291. Whereas, Greg and Jane, like I said, she said, pull out.

  292. It didn't matter.

  293. You just grabbed something and it didn't matter whether it matched or not.

  294. Mm-hmm.

  295. You know, when Zacchaeus was up in the tree, you all know the song from when you were kids.

  296. Zacchaeus was a wee little man, right?

  297. And Jesus said, I'm going to your house today.

  298. Was Zacchaeus ready for Jesus' visit?

  299. No.

  300. He just welcomed him.

  301. And that is one of the biblical examples.

  302. But, oftentimes, we also think that hospitality or practicing hospitality has to be in our homes.

  303. That's not totally what hospitality means.

  304. Mm-hmm.

  305. You know, some people can do it.

  306. Some people can do it in different stages of their life.

  307. Some people will never do it because of whatever.

  308. Mm-hmm.

  309. And that's important to keep in your mind when we talk about hospitality.

  310. Yeah.

  311. John.

  312. I think welcome is so important because I think that there's often an apprehension on the part of the guess that I'm going to be a burden.

  313. And that fear is an obstacle that needs to be overcome.

  314. One of the great examples, I think, of creating this welcome is the rule of St. Benedict.

  315. So, you know, it's a treat.

  316. When anyone would show up at the monastery at any hour.

  317. It could be two in the morning.

  318. It could be two in the morning.

  319. It could be two in the morning.

  320. In the rules of St. Benedict, as soon as they rang the bell, even two in the morning.

  321. the doorman was supposed to say

  322. as loud as he could, thanks be to God.

  323. Even if he were weary of all.

  324. Because you can imagine the reluctance.

  325. Oh no, oh this is going to be so big.

  326. I believe such a burden.

  327. And to immediately relieve that anxiety.

  328. Thanks be to God, I guess.

  329. Captures of the spirit of love.

  330. Yeah, that's great.

  331. Yeah, this idea of welcoming

  332. is, it kind of captures it.

  333. Let's look at some text together.

  334. Because actually nowhere

  335. does the Old Testament use the word hospitality.

  336. And our word hospitality,

  337. as we're going to see,

  338. I don't know if you guys can see that,

  339. is this Greek word

  340. phylozenia.

  341. And you'll see why that makes sense

  342. in a second.

  343. So let's look at the New Testament

  344. and see what the New Testament

  345. has to say about hospitality.

  346. And it only mentions

  347. the word in a few places.

  348. 1 Peter 4.9

  349. Be hospitable to one another

  350. without complaint.

  351. Hebrews 13.1 and 2

  352. say,

  353. Let brotherly love continue.

  354. Do not neglect

  355. to show hospitality

  356. to strangers.

  357. For thereby,

  358. some have entertained

  359. angels unawares.

  360. And that word,

  361. hospitality to strangers,

  362. you begin to see

  363. what that word means.

  364. Because in this word,

  365. it's comprised of two different words.

  366. Philo,

  367. what does that sound like?

  368. Philo.

  369. Brotherly love.

  370. And xenia is,

  371. where we get xenophobia,

  372. is stranger.

  373. So loving the stranger.

  374. So hospitality,

  375. as Hebrew says,

  376. is love the stranger among you.

  377. And it makes clear,

  378. he says,

  379. Look,

  380. yes,

  381. love the brothers and sisters.

  382. Don't forget this.

  383. But then he says,

  384. But do not neglect

  385. to show hospitality

  386. to those outside the church too.

  387. So,

  388. while hospitality

  389. starts within the church,

  390. it shouldn't stop there.

  391. It should extend

  392. to strangers.

  393. And the extent of kindness

  394. goes further.

  395. It says,

  396. Some have even

  397. entertained angels.

  398. 1 Timothy 5,

    1 Timothy 5:10

  399. verse 10.

  400. Another verse here.

  401. It says,

  402. And having a reputation

  403. for good works,

  404. speaking of those

  405. who are on the widow's list,

  406. if she has brought up children,

  407. has shown hospitality,

  408. has washed the feet of saints,

  409. has cared for the afflicted,

  410. and has devoted herself

  411. to every good work.

  412. So,

  413. Paul is talking about

  414. the widows.

  415. And it highlights

  416. the importance of hospitality

  417. in the early church,

  418. that this woman

  419. could not be put on

  420. the widow's list

  421. unless she had shown hospitality.

  422. And that was one

  423. of the qualifications.

  424. And so,

  425. how does hospitality

  426. show itself

  427. in 1 Timothy 5,

    1 Timothy 5:10

  428. verse 10?

  429. Does someone have that

  430. flipped open?

  431. What are some of the ways

  432. that this person

  433. has shown hospitality?

  434. It's not hosting snacks

  435. during the Super Bowl,

  436. there...

  437. What does it say?

  438. Yeah,

  439. 1 Timothy 5,

  440. 10.

  441. She has shown hospitality,

  442. has washed the feet

  443. of the saints,

  444. has cared for the afflicted,

  445. and has devoted herself

  446. to every good work.

  447. Yeah,

  448. exactly.

  449. So,

  450. it's through this selfless

  451. and sacrificial serving

  452. of the saints

  453. that is being shown.

  454. So,

  455. this hospitality,

  456. again,

  457. you're beginning to see

  458. it's much broader

  459. than just entertaining people

  460. for dinner.

  461. It's serving them

  462. sacrificially.

  463. And Romans 12,

    Romans 12:12–14

  464. verses 12 to 14.

  465. Paul writes

  466. to the church in Rome...

  467. Before we leave...

  468. Oh yeah,

  469. sure,

  470. go ahead.

  471. I think it's important

  472. to know,

  473. such as bringing up

  474. children.

  475. I take it to mean

  476. not her own blood children,

  477. but children

  478. who have no one.

  479. I mean,

  480. that would certainly

  481. align with

  482. serving those,

  483. the afflicted.

  484. So,

  485. you know,

  486. caring for the orphans.

  487. I mean,

  488. that would be

  489. in line with

  490. what Paul is saying there.

  491. Thank you.

  492. Thank you for that.

  493. Romans 12,

  494. 12 to 14.

  495. Paul writes

  496. to the church in Rome,

  497. be joyful in hope,

  498. patient in affliction,

  499. faithful in prayer.

  500. Share with the Lord's people

  501. who are in need.

  502. Practice hospitality.

  503. Bless those

  504. who persecute you.

  505. Bless and do not curse.

  506. And later on,

  507. Paul asks the church in Rome

  508. to show hospitality

  509. specifically to Phoebe.

  510. He writes,

  511. welcome her in the Lord

  512. in a way worthy

  513. of the saints

  514. and help her

  515. and whatever she may need

  516. from you.

  517. For she has been

  518. a patron of many

  519. and of myself as well.

  520. So,

  521. Paul is specifically

  522. singling out

  523. gospel workers

  524. who the church

  525. was to welcome

  526. and show hospitality to.

  527. And we'll see next week

  528. how gospel workers

  529. depended upon hospitality

  530. to do gospel ministry

  531. in the early church.

  532. Second and third John

  533. really kind of highlight that.

  534. We'll get into

  535. the kind of missions

  536. and gospel workers

  537. next week.

  538. So,

  539. we can say,

  540. in summary,

  541. the concept of hospitality

  542. is to love strangers.

  543. Practicing selfless,

  544. sacrificial service

  545. and meeting practical

  546. and spiritual needs

  547. of those around you.

  548. So,

  549. if we understand

  550. hospitality

  551. in that respect

  552. as love for outsiders,

  553. then this is no

  554. minor biblical theme.

  555. Right?

  556. And,

  557. you know,

  558. you could even think

  559. of hospitality

  560. in the Old Testament.

  561. How does,

  562. rooted in who God is himself,

  563. of welcoming those

  564. who are outsiders.

  565. You know,

  566. what are some places

  567. that just come to mind

  568. when you think about

  569. God welcoming the outcast

  570. in the Old Testament?

  571. I mean,

  572. it's a pretty thick theme.

  573. Think of a historical context.

  574. Even before,

  575. I think I,

  576. Tyler and I have been

  577. battling back and forth,

  578. not battling in a bad sense,

  579. but like,

  580. what should we say,

  581. what we shouldn't,

  582. because there's four weeks

  583. and there's a lot to cover.

  584. Think,

  585. before you think back

  586. to all the biblical examples

  587. that you might be able

  588. to pull from your

  589. Sunday school days

  590. or from your present

  591. Bible reading,

  592. think about historically

  593. in the United States

  594. how people welcomed

  595. each other.

  596. Before World War II,

  597. before welfare

  598. became available,

  599. before orphanages

  600. went out of fashion,

  601. how did people welcome

  602. guests and strangers

  603. into their community?

  604. Think about it

  605. in the broader sense.

  606. Who's good on their history?

  607. Like,

  608. what happened

  609. to orphanages?

  610. What happened

  611. to poor homes

  612. or poor houses?

  613. In the early 1900s,

  614. every community

  615. in the state

  616. of Connecticut

  617. was required

  618. to have a poor house

  619. for widows

  620. or orphans.

  621. The church

  622. used to take care

  623. of all that.

  624. Well then,

  625. the welfare state

  626. became available.

  627. Widows were provided for.

  628. By the government.

  629. Poor houses

  630. went out of fashion.

  631. Brooksville Park

  632. out in Hamden

  633. where I used to work,

  634. the building

  635. that is there,

  636. the ranger's home,

  637. used to be a poor house

  638. for a time period.

  639. It was the one

  640. that any widows

  641. or orphans

  642. went to

  643. out in Haven.

  644. There used to be

  645. a big orphanage

  646. right on

  647. Prospect Street

  648. that housed orphans.

  649. So what has changed

  650. in our culture,

  651. which also changed

  652. in biblical times

  653. as to

  654. welcoming

  655. these guests

  656. and strangers?

  657. You know,

  658. think back to

  659. when you were

  660. welcomed here.

  661. Do you remember

  662. the person

  663. that welcomed you

  664. for the first time

  665. in true

  666. welcoming sincerity?

  667. or when you

  668. joined a club

  669. like a gym?

  670. Who welcomed you?

  671. And why did they do it?

  672. I mean,

  673. there's a lot of

  674. questions here,

  675. but we can go back

  676. right away

  677. and I can say

  678. it was Zacchaeus.

  679. You know,

  680. he welcomed the Lord.

  681. Well,

  682. I hope if the Lord

  683. said I'm coming

  684. to your house

  685. that I'd be ready

  686. to welcome him too.

  687. You know,

  688. but think back

  689. to what our society

  690. has done

  691. as far as

  692. welcoming

  693. strangers and guests.

  694. Yeah.

  695. And how discouraging

  696. it would be

  697. if you came

  698. to this church

  699. for three or four weeks

  700. and no one

  701. welcomed you.

  702. Nobody.

  703. You know,

  704. I've heard stories

  705. where,

  706. so like,

  707. if no one welcomed,

  708. it's a fourth week

  709. coming to Trinity,

  710. if no one welcomes us

  711. today,

  712. we're not going

  713. to stay here.

  714. And then,

  715. by God's grace,

  716. somebody welcomed them

  717. and they're,

  718. ten years later,

  719. they're still here.

  720. So,

  721. it is important

  722. that we welcome

  723. those who are

  724. outsiders.

  725. But,

  726. to your question,

  727. you know,

  728. it's changed.

  729. It's changed.

  730. And,

  731. we don't think

  732. about those terms

  733. anymore.

  734. So,

  735. if you're thinking

  736. about something

  737. that we've learned

  738. about in the Bible

  739. that happened

  740. during biblical days,

  741. like Tyler asked,

  742. if you're going

  743. to think about it,

  744. it's probably

  745. because it's going

  746. to trigger something

  747. in your memory

  748. of something

  749. that happened to you

  750. in the modern

  751. centuries.

  752. So,

  753. think about it.

  754. For me,

  755. it truly was

  756. just being welcomed

  757. as a somewhat

  758. of an outsider.

  759. My mother

  760. kind of came

  761. to church

  762. and then kind

  763. of didn't

  764. and was in

  765. and out

  766. and other adults

  767. in the church

  768. welcomed me.

  769. It didn't matter

  770. whether my entire

  771. family wasn't there

  772. or my absent father,

  773. you know.

  774. So,

  775. that was,

  776. so I love

  777. reading Bible stories

  778. where somebody's

  779. just welcomed

  780. into community

  781. with warmth.

  782. It didn't matter,

  783. we didn't say,

  784. oh,

  785. well,

  786. first of all,

  787. did you have

  788. Christian parents?

  789. Oh,

  790. wait a minute,

  791. did you go to

  792. Sunday school

  793. when you were a kid?

  794. Oh,

  795. you know,

  796. when did you

  797. get baptized?

  798. You know,

  799. was it when you

  800. were an infant

  801. or when you were,

  802. there were no

  803. precursors to

  804. whether I qualified

  805. or not.

  806. I was just welcomed.

  807. So,

  808. yeah.

  809. How many people

  810. desire and long

  811. for a place

  812. where they feel

  813. like they're truly

  814. welcomed in community?

  815. Everyone desires that.

  816. And the church

  817. has something to offer.

  818. And this is a place

  819. where all sinners

  820. are welcomed

  821. because God

  822. has welcomed us

  823. when we didn't

  824. deserve it.

  825. I think you kind of

  826. touched on it

  827. right now,

  828. Tyler.

  829. I think listening

  830. to what you're

  831. sharing,

  832. Kirsten,

  833. makes so much sense.

  834. And the part of

  835. the welcome

  836. is you're welcoming

  837. into.

  838. And I think

  839. what we have

  840. as Christians

  841. and as a church

  842. is an actual

  843. space

  844. that we were

  845. welcomed into

  846. that now we

  847. extend welcome

  848. into because

  849. of our conversion,

  850. because of our

  851. salvation in Christ.

  852. You know,

  853. Christ has gone

  854. to prepare a place

  855. for us,

  856. right?

  857. And I think

  858. that has so much

  859. our understanding

  860. of

  861. the love of

  862. Jesus

  863. in our own

  864. hearts.

  865. is what

  866. then

  867. is the

  868. space,

  869. right?

  870. Yeah.

  871. Yeah.

  872. And the love

  873. of Jesus

  874. for us,

  875. you know,

  876. Ephesians 2.12

  877. comes to mind.

  878. Remember that

  879. you,

  880. at that time,

  881. separated from

  882. Christ,

  883. alienated from

  884. the commonwealth

  885. of Israel

  886. and strangers

  887. to the covenants

  888. of promise,

  889. having no hope

  890. and without God

  891. in the world.

  892. That was us,

  893. right?

  894. But then,

  895. at great cost

  896. to himself,

  897. he welcomes us in.

  898. So,

  899. I think welcoming

  900. others

  901. begins with

  902. us understanding

  903. that God

  904. is the one

  905. who has welcomed

  906. us in,

  907. and it's our

  908. love for Christ

  909. that propels us

  910. and is a fuel

  911. that allows us

  912. to love strangers

  913. because it's hard.

  914. Anita?

  915. Yeah,

  916. Anita.

  917. I wonder if

  918. it's worth bringing

  919. up,

  920. like,

  921. so we love

  922. and serve

  923. the God

  924. who sees,

  925. and before we

  926. can walk

  927. and we have

  928. to see people,

  929. which also

  930. gets back

  931. to the time

  932. question,

  933. and also

  934. gets to your

  935. question,

  936. Tyler,

  937. about,

  938. like,

  939. what if I

  940. can't do

  941. this,

  942. if I can't,

  943. I can't imagine

  944. myself hosting

  945. in this way,

  946. but I think

  947. it starts with

  948. the cultivation

  949. of our hearts

  950. and the eyes

  951. of our hearts

  952. to see as

  953. Jesus sees

  954. and to be

  955. clothed

  956. in compassion

  957. and to make

  958. room,

  959. to make space,

  960. which takes

  961. time and attention

  962. and intention.

  963. Yeah,

  964. yeah,

  965. and getting to

  966. know people

  967. well enough

  968. where,

  969. to know that,

  970. you know,

  971. if someone is

  972. struggling,

  973. that there's a,

  974. we know each

  975. other well enough

  976. that we can

  977. meet the needs

  978. that we're

  979. experiencing,

  980. that some of us

  981. are experiencing

  982. practically,

  983. spiritually,

  984. so there is

  985. a sense of

  986. the outsider,

  987. but even within

  988. our own church,

  989. like,

  990. we need to

  991. know one

  992. other well

  993. enough to

  994. be transparent

  995. so we can

  996. be hospitable

  997. toward one

  998. other.

  999. Sharon and

  1000. Susan both

  1001. have their

  1002. hands up.

  1003. Sharon.

  1004. Yeah,

  1005. can I stand up?

  1006. Yes,

  1007. please.

  1008. Yes,

  1009. I find that

  1010. I wanted to

  1011. touch up your

  1012. topic about

  1013. talking about

  1014. a lot of

  1015. new people

  1016. coming to our

  1017. church,

  1018. you know,

  1019. that they've

  1020. been coming

  1021. for so long

  1022. that not

  1023. really realized

  1024. because the

  1025. church is so

  1026. big,

  1027. you know,

  1028. and then

  1029. we have

  1030. a new

  1031. thing.

  1032. This is

  1033. what I

  1034. actually had

  1035. this thought

  1036. in my

  1037. mind for

  1038. a while

  1039. that I

  1040. remember

  1041. the one

  1042. I just

  1043. had to share

  1044. with my

  1045. experience

  1046. and how

  1047. God

  1048. lead me

  1049. to this

  1050. direction.

  1051. One day

  1052. I had

  1053. on the last

  1054. three months

  1055. ago,

  1056. I was

  1057. talking to

  1058. Michael,

  1059. I said,

  1060. I always

  1061. sit beside

  1062. John

  1063. Hinson,

  1064. they always

  1065. sit in

  1066. the same

  1067. place,

  1068. okay?

  1069. And then,

  1070. it's crazy

  1071. because we

  1072. don't meet

  1073. new people.

  1074. Maybe it

  1075. serves

  1076. the same.

  1077. I thought

  1078. this is a

  1079. very common

  1080. topic that

  1081. we didn't

  1082. realize that

  1083. we missed

  1084. up a lot

  1085. of people

  1086. in our

  1087. lives.

  1088. So when

  1089. I got

  1090. up,

  1091. my girl

  1092. picked me

  1093. up the

  1094. time,

  1095. I told

  1096. my girl,

  1097. hmm,

  1098. yeah,

  1099. I just

  1100. only find

  1101. that I

  1102. don't have

  1103. opportunity

  1104. to meet

  1105. up in

  1106. the new

  1107. people.

  1108. And

  1109. after

  1110. some

  1111. weeks,

  1112. I

  1113. just

  1114. talk

  1115. to the

  1116. people

  1117. around

  1118. me,

  1119. I

  1120. just

  1121. go off.

  1122. So my

  1123. girl

  1124. told me,

  1125. Mom,

  1126. change

  1127. your

  1128. face.

  1129. Change

  1130. your

  1131. face.

  1132. I

  1133. go to

  1134. the

  1135. right.

  1136. Change

  1137. move anywhere

  1138. you go.

  1139. So I

  1140. take a word,

  1141. you know,

  1142. I start

  1143. doing that.

  1144. The next

  1145. week I

  1146. came,

  1147. I

  1148. changed

  1149. my

  1150. face.

  1151. Now you

  1152. found out

  1153. I sit

  1154. in the

  1155. right

  1156. hand.

  1157. And

  1158. as I

  1159. go through,

  1160. my heart

  1161. wanted to

  1162. see that.

  1163. Because I

  1164. realize a lot

  1165. of new

  1166. faces.

  1167. How are we

  1168. going to

  1169. reach out

  1170. in these

  1171. people's

  1172. life?

  1173. How are we

  1174. going to

  1175. find interest

  1176. about them?

  1177. When people

  1178. come to the

  1179. church,

  1180. they want,

  1181. they came

  1182. with a

  1183. difference,

  1184. reason.

  1185. They might

  1186. come with

  1187. a lot,

  1188. they might

  1189. come with

  1190. finding

  1191. relationships.

  1192. They might

  1193. come with

  1194. love.

  1195. They might

  1196. find out

  1197. about

  1198. church,

  1199. you know,

  1200. what

  1201. curious,

  1202. curiosity

  1203. to come

  1204. in,

  1205. you know,

  1206. some people

  1207. come in.

  1208. I remember

  1209. one man

  1210. just walked

  1211. into a

  1212. church,

  1213. you know,

  1214. he just

  1215. came to

  1216. study here.

  1217. He just

  1218. walked in.

  1219. Then I

  1220. saw him,

  1221. I came

  1222. out,

  1223. and he

  1224. said,

  1225. I just

  1226. passed

  1227. by,

  1228. and I

  1229. saw

  1230. the church

  1231. is so

  1232. beautiful,

  1233. I walked

  1234. in.

  1235. I

  1236. actually

  1237. will

  1238. come

  1239. in,

  1240. I

  1241. just

  1242. come

  1243. in

  1244. any

  1245. time

  1246. you

  1247. pass

  1248. by.

  1249. So I

  1250. realized

  1251. that

  1252. this

  1253. thing

  1254. happened

  1255. in

  1256. our

  1257. church.

  1258. And

  1259. then I

  1260. managed

  1261. I

  1262. found

  1263. a

  1264. young

  1265. man

  1266. behind

  1267. me.

  1268. And

  1269. I

  1270. knew

  1271. I

  1272. just

  1273. didn't

  1274. know

  1275. what

  1276. to do.

  1277. But I

  1278. thought,

  1279. I just

  1280. couldn't

  1281. hide

  1282. in

  1283. him.

  1284. I

  1285. just

  1286. did not

  1287. say

  1288. whether

  1289. I

  1290. knew

  1291. or

  1292. what,

  1293. I

  1294. don't

  1295. want

  1296. to

  1297. say

  1298. that

  1299. because

  1300. I

  1301. feel

  1302. so

  1303. bad.

  1304. It

  1305. was

  1306. here

  1307. for

  1308. a few

  1309. years.

  1310. I

  1311. don't

  1312. know

  1313. why

  1314. they

  1315. put

  1316. my

  1317. face.

  1318. So I

  1319. really

  1320. had

  1321. this

  1322. struggle

  1323. with me

  1324. when I

  1325. talked

  1326. to

  1327. the

  1328. people.

  1329. And I

  1330. found

  1331. that

  1332. he

  1333. came

  1334. there

  1335. for

  1336. two

  1337. years.

  1338. And

  1339. he

  1340. didn't

  1341. get

  1342. to

  1343. know

  1344. people.

  1345. And I

  1346. put him

  1347. down

  1348. and I

  1349. introduced

  1350. a lot

  1351. of

  1352. people.

  1353. And

  1354. this

  1355. young

  1356. man,

  1357. I

  1358. found

  1359. him

  1360. that

  1361. he

  1362. came

  1363. from

  1364. a

  1365. Catholic

  1366. background.

  1367. And

  1368. someone

  1369. brought

  1370. me

  1371. to

  1372. a

  1373. church.

  1374. He

  1375. came

  1376. about

  1377. two

  1378. months

  1379. already.

  1380. So

  1381. I

  1382. asked

  1383. him

  1384. do

  1385. you

  1386. know

  1387. anyone?

  1388. He

  1389. said

  1390. no

  1391. I

  1392. don't

  1393. know

  1394. .

  1395. Someone

  1396. brought

  1397. me

  1398. I

  1399. know

  1400. he

  1401. said.

  1402. Also

  1403. after

  1404. that

  1405. I

  1406. know

  1407. that

  1408. I

  1409. had

  1410. to

  1411. do

  1412. something

  1413. or

  1414. I

  1415. just

  1416. talked

  1417. to

  1418. him

  1419. and

  1420. then

  1421. I

  1422. started

  1423. catching him

  1424. and then

  1425. he

  1426. brought

  1427. his

  1428. brother

  1429. in.

  1430. I

  1431. got

  1432. to

  1433. text him

  1434. and

  1435. he

  1436. brought

  1437. his

  1438. brother

  1439. I

  1440. saw

  1441. new

  1442. places

  1443. I

  1444. said

  1445. yeah

  1446. I

  1447. went

  1448. to

  1449. my

  1450. house

  1451. I

  1452. got

  1453. them

  1454. last

  1455. week

  1456. to

  1457. my

  1458. house

  1459. with

  1460. another

  1461. group

  1462. of

  1463. people.

  1464. I

  1465. tried

  1466. to

  1467. do

  1468. I

  1469. thought

  1470. something

  1471. that

  1472. we

  1473. can

  1474. do

  1475. because

  1476. we

  1477. do

  1478. have

  1479. a lot

  1480. of

  1481. new

  1482. places

  1483. to

  1484. speak.

  1485. I

  1486. think

  1487. sometimes

  1488. we

  1489. miss

  1490. people.

  1491. So

  1492. why

  1493. I

  1494. think

  1495. that

  1496. I

  1497. like

  1498. to

  1499. touch

  1500. the

  1501. topic

  1502. that

  1503. sometimes

  1504. we

  1505. have

  1506. to

  1507. put

  1508. a

  1509. little

  1510. more

  1511. energy

  1512. to

  1513. see

  1514. the

  1515. new

  1516. places.

  1517. To

  1518. welcome

  1519. them

  1520. to

  1521. make

  1522. them

  1523. feel

  1524. at

  1525. home.

  1526. I

  1527. think

  1528. that

  1529. is

  1530. a

  1531. very

  1532. important

  1533. part

  1534. that

  1535. we

  1536. need

  1537. to

  1538. do.

  1539. The

  1540. first

  1541. experience

  1542. is so

  1543. important

  1544. for

  1545. the

  1546. new

  1547. people

  1548. actually.

  1549. You

  1550. know

  1551. that

  1552. I

  1553. did

  1554. repeat

  1555. the

  1556. study

  1557. and

  1558. I

  1559. talked

  1560. to

  1561. these

  1562. people

  1563. and

  1564. realized

  1565. that

  1566. people

  1567. tell

  1568. me

  1569. oh

  1570. yeah

  1571. the

  1572. first

  1573. time

  1574. I

  1575. came

  1576. that

  1577. you

  1578. introduced

  1579. I

  1580. mean

  1581. you

  1582. know

  1583. me

  1584. and

  1585. you

  1586. welcome

  1587. me

  1588. and

  1589. I

  1590. learned

  1591. along

  1592. the

  1593. way

  1594. to

  1595. see

  1596. how

  1597. this

  1598. hospitality

  1599. can

  1600. help

  1601. the

  1602. church

  1603. to

  1604. build

  1605. up

  1606. this

  1607. community

  1608. this

  1609. is

  1610. what

  1611. I

  1612. think

  1613. is

  1614. important

  1615. Thank you

  1616. Sharon

  1617. Thank you

  1618. Second

  1619. thought

  1620. the one

  1621. that you

  1622. mentioned

  1623. about

  1624. sorry

  1625. I

  1626. have

  1627. to

  1628. go

  1629. through

  1630. the

  1631. second

  1632. one

  1633. The

  1634. hospitality

  1635. meal

  1636. inviting

  1637. them

  1638. didn't

  1639. have

  1640. to be

  1641. doing

  1642. a

  1643. very

  1644. grand

  1645. important

  1646. is

  1647. your

  1648. heart

  1649. and

  1650. you

  1651. want

  1652. to

  1653. have

  1654. a

  1655. relationship

  1656. with

  1657. them

  1658. you

  1659. want

  1660. to

  1661. listen

  1662. to

  1663. their

  1664. needs

  1665. and

  1666. they

  1667. are

  1668. maybe

  1669. can

  1670. pray

  1671. together

  1672. with

  1673. them

  1674. there's

  1675. something

  1676. we

  1677. can

  1678. do

  1679. for

  1680. them

  1681. Susan

  1682. do you

  1683. still want

  1684. to

  1685. share

  1686. I

  1687. don't

  1688. know

  1689. as

  1690. we're

  1691. talking

  1692. I'm

  1693. reminded

  1694. of

  1695. the

  1696. messengers

  1697. that

  1698. were sent

  1699. to

  1700. Abraham

  1701. and

  1702. quickly

  1703. ran

  1704. it

  1705. come

  1706. on

  1707. let's

  1708. make

  1709. an

  1710. occasion

  1711. because

  1712. we have

  1713. these

  1714. people

  1715. and how

  1716. we miss

  1717. out

  1718. if we don't

  1719. make room

  1720. for people

  1721. because we don't know

  1722. who the Lord

  1723. is something else

  1724. to be

  1725. and Sharon

  1726. said that

  1727. so well

  1728. you know

  1729. I'd like to

  1730. add one

  1731. thing here

  1732. though

  1733. is we're

  1734. talking a lot

  1735. about

  1736. hospitality

  1737. in the

  1738. church

  1739. now

  1740. people

  1741. come in

  1742. and we

  1743. are called

  1744. to welcome

  1745. strangers

  1746. and guests

  1747. but we

  1748. kind of

  1749. figure that

  1750. well they're

  1751. here for

  1752. some reason

  1753. right

  1754. they either

  1755. got invited

  1756. or they're

  1757. looking for

  1758. the Lord

  1759. or they're

  1760. lost

  1761. or they're

  1762. seeking

  1763. or they're

  1764. discerning

  1765. whether they

  1766. like their

  1767. old denomination

  1768. or a new

  1769. one

  1770. or they're

  1771. coming from

  1772. a bad

  1773. situation

  1774. at another

  1775. church

  1776. or they've

  1777. never been

  1778. in a

  1779. church

  1780. what about

  1781. when it's

  1782. out in your

  1783. community

  1784. your neighborhood

  1785. it's a whole

  1786. different

  1787. ball of wax

  1788. because you've

  1789. got a lot

  1790. of unknowns

  1791. out there

  1792. at least

  1793. here after

  1794. you've met

  1795. me and you

  1796. talk you

  1797. know I like

  1798. to drink

  1799. coffee and

  1800. you know

  1801. I'm comfortable

  1802. having people

  1803. in my home

  1804. and it doesn't

  1805. matter whether

  1806. there's 10

  1807. or 25

  1808. at the last

  1809. minute

  1810. you know

  1811. you know

  1812. those kind

  1813. of things

  1814. about me

  1815. and you know

  1816. I'm a

  1817. Christian

  1818. or hopefully

  1819. that my

  1820. profession of

  1821. being a

  1822. Christian

  1823. and being

  1824. here

  1825. and being

  1826. elected

  1827. into a

  1828. position

  1829. is reason

  1830. enough

  1831. what about

  1832. your neighborhood

  1833. what about

  1834. your community

  1835. all of a

  1836. sudden

  1837. there's some

  1838. real scary

  1839. stuff in

  1840. there

  1841. I mean

  1842. have you

  1843. thought about

  1844. that in

  1845. the biblical

  1846. context of

  1847. what some

  1848. of these

  1849. people were

  1850. doing

  1851. they weren't

  1852. all like

  1853. they didn't

  1854. all know

  1855. each other

  1856. in their

  1857. small group

  1858. and then say

  1859. hey let's

  1860. have you know

  1861. a meal

  1862. together

  1863. or you

  1864. know oh

  1865. John and

  1866. Anita you

  1867. don't mind

  1868. if I bring

  1869. 10 friends

  1870. over with

  1871. me do

  1872. you

  1873. you know

  1874. I mean

  1875. well who

  1876. are they

  1877. I don't

  1878. know

  1879. they were

  1880. those former

  1881. zealots

  1882. from way

  1883. back when

  1884. or you

  1885. know

  1886. I mean

  1887. you have

  1888. to make

  1889. a decision

  1890. about it

  1891. we will

  1892. talk about

  1893. in a future

  1894. class

  1895. about safety

  1896. and your

  1897. personal safety

  1898. and those

  1899. of your

  1900. family

  1901. by welcoming

  1902. guests

  1903. and strangers

  1904. that's a

  1905. whole nother

  1906. that could be

  1907. a whole nother

  1908. comment

  1909. but I'd

  1910. like to ask

  1911. right now

  1912. what's

  1913. I think

  1914. with what

  1915. Sharon was

  1916. saying about

  1917. change your

  1918. seat

  1919. it's change

  1920. your perception

  1921. change your

  1922. viewpoint

  1923. of what you're

  1924. looking for

  1925. we all keep

  1926. saying it has

  1927. to come from

  1928. the heart

  1929. and that is

  1930. true

  1931. if it doesn't

  1932. come from

  1933. your heart

  1934. it's no

  1935. different than

  1936. somebody being

  1937. excited

  1938. I'm so glad

  1939. you're here

  1940. and you

  1941. paid $160

  1942. to be a part

  1943. of my gym

  1944. because it

  1945. just made

  1946. money in my

  1947. pocket

  1948. that's not

  1949. a selfless

  1950. welcoming

  1951. I'm glad

  1952. you're here

  1953. they have to

  1954. reach their

  1955. quota

  1956. right

  1957. car dealership

  1958. when you go

  1959. in and they

  1960. reach their

  1961. quota

  1962. right now

  1963. by the way

  1964. is the best

  1965. time to buy

  1966. a car

  1967. end of

  1968. November

  1969. end of

  1970. December

  1971. my son

  1972. works for

  1973. executive auto

  1974. group

  1975. because they

  1976. have to

  1977. meet quotas

  1978. by the end

  1979. of the year

  1980. that's a

  1981. different kind

  1982. of excited

  1983. you're here

  1984. so what

  1985. we're going

  1986. to say

  1987. anyway

  1988. what enrages

  1989. you

  1990. what gets

  1991. your temperature

  1992. up

  1993. what

  1994. what ticks

  1995. you off

  1996. when

  1997. somebody says

  1998. you should

  1999. be practicing

  2000. hospitality

  2001. you should

  2002. invite people

  2003. into your

  2004. home

  2005. you should

  2006. host a

  2007. small group

  2008. what

  2009. what kind

  2010. of

  2011. you know

  2012. somebody said

  2013. I should

  2014. be doing

  2015. women's

  2016. ministries

  2017. quite a

  2018. number of

  2019. years ago

  2020. you would

  2021. be great

  2022. in charge

  2023. of women's

  2024. ministries

  2025. and all

  2026. those wonderful

  2027. events

  2028. okay

  2029. if you want

  2030. to take care

  2031. of the garden

  2032. and mow

  2033. the lawn

  2034. and do

  2035. the fellowship

  2036. and do

  2037. that

  2038. I'd be

  2039. more than

  2040. happy

  2041. to do

  2042. that

  2043. and I

  2044. had to

  2045. calm down

  2046. and pray

  2047. about it

  2048. and talk

  2049. to a

  2050. pastor

  2051. about it

  2052. and how

  2053. do you

  2054. so what

  2055. everybody

  2056. you don't

  2057. I mean if you

  2058. don't feel like

  2059. sharing you

  2060. don't have

  2061. to but

  2062. it's easy

  2063. to look

  2064. at the

  2065. Bible

  2066. and say

  2067. I really

  2068. should try

  2069. to do

  2070. that more

  2071. but

  2072. I'm not

  2073. feeling it

  2074. and I

  2075. got a bad

  2076. experience

  2077. in the back

  2078. where I'm

  2079. not ever

  2080. doing that

  2081. again

  2082. so what's

  2083. the kind

  2084. of thing

  2085. that like

  2086. maybe it

  2087. doesn't matter

  2088. to get you

  2089. angry

  2090. but what

  2091. stands in

  2092. your way

  2093. maybe that's

  2094. better

  2095. Laura's shaking

  2096. her head

  2097. I mean you're

  2098. in a community

  2099. that you're

  2100. purposely

  2101. being a part

  2102. of a community

  2103. that is a

  2104. difficult community

  2105. to be a part

  2106. of according

  2107. to you know

  2108. the New Haven

  2109. Register and

  2110. every other

  2111. media

  2112. the New

  2113. Hallville

  2114. section

  2115. of Hamden

  2116. and New Haven

  2117. so what

  2118. what stands

  2119. in your way

  2120. of doing

  2121. what they

  2122. told us

  2123. in the Bible

  2124. we should be

  2125. doing

  2126. the house

  2127. being tidy

  2128. the house

  2129. being tidy

  2130. okay

  2131. all right

  2132. it might be

  2133. it might be

  2134. it might

  2135. really

  2136. like I can't

  2137. do it

  2138. you know

  2139. it's trashed

  2140. you know

  2141. it's not

  2142. it's not

  2143. enough

  2144. yeah

  2145. what else

  2146. I think

  2147. with having

  2148. four young

  2149. children

  2150. and thinking

  2151. of inviting

  2152. you know

  2153. people without

  2154. children

  2155. to our

  2156. home

  2157. for dinner

  2158. how do I

  2159. make them

  2160. be little

  2161. robots

  2162. and be perfect

  2163. that's not

  2164. real life

  2165. and so

  2166. just getting

  2167. over my

  2168. own fear

  2169. of like

  2170. how are we

  2171. being portrayed

  2172. to other

  2173. people

  2174. as parents

  2175. because I

  2176. don't remember

  2177. it saying

  2178. in the Bible

  2179. by the way

  2180. if you invite

  2181. somebody over

  2182. you can't

  2183. have your

  2184. children around

  2185. right

  2186. that wasn't

  2187. I don't

  2188. I don't

  2189. think that

  2190. was in the

  2191. Bible

  2192. that I

  2193. remember

  2194. right

  2195. or oh

  2196. by the way

  2197. you better

  2198. make sure

  2199. you only

  2200. have fresh

  2201. bread

  2202. from the

  2203. bakery

  2204. this morning

  2205. I cannot

  2206. deceive someone

  2207. to the standards

  2208. that these

  2209. people

  2210. are used

  2211. to

  2212. okay

  2213. what Dennis

  2214. is saying

  2215. is he

  2216. you know

  2217. he can't

  2218. receive

  2219. those people

  2220. to the standards

  2221. that they're

  2222. used to

  2223. entertaining

  2224. princes and

  2225. angels and

  2226. kings and

  2227. queens

  2228. you know

  2229. well if I

  2230. could have

  2231. Jesus at

  2232. my table

  2233. that was one

  2234. of the

  2235. titles that

  2236. we were

  2237. talking about

  2238. for this

  2239. class

  2240. is Jesus

  2241. at your

  2242. table

  2243. if I

  2244. can welcome

  2245. Jesus into

  2246. my home

  2247. and my

  2248. heart and

  2249. be here

  2250. why can't

  2251. I invite

  2252. that person

  2253. I think

  2254. sometimes

  2255. the fear

  2256. of I don't

  2257. know if

  2258. offense is

  2259. the right

  2260. word

  2261. but

  2262. especially

  2263. if you look

  2264. within our

  2265. neighborhood

  2266. right

  2267. and I feel

  2268. like we want

  2269. a pretty

  2270. tight

  2271. christianship

  2272. in our

  2273. home

  2274. you know

  2275. there's

  2276. scriptures

  2277. on the

  2278. wall

  2279. we ask

  2280. a blessing

  2281. over our

  2282. meals

  2283. and birthday

  2284. parties

  2285. for the

  2286. kids

  2287. we always

  2288. ask a

  2289. blessing

  2290. over whoever's

  2291. birthday

  2292. is

  2293. so I think

  2294. just sometimes

  2295. that like

  2296. sense of

  2297. feeling like

  2298. the awkward

  2299. ones

  2300. people might

  2301. not really

  2302. kind of

  2303. understand

  2304. or not have

  2305. experience with

  2306. like what it

  2307. looks like to

  2308. actually live

  2309. out

  2310. do you think

  2311. do you think

  2312. do you think

  2313. it has anything

  2314. to do with

  2315. about how

  2316. we're

  2317. thinking

  2318. we're perceiving

  2319. what other

  2320. people think

  2321. of us

  2322. like

  2323. you know

  2324. some

  2325. people I

  2326. think for

  2327. me personally

  2328. it's more

  2329. like I

  2330. don't want

  2331. to scare

  2332. you off

  2333. you know

  2334. like I

  2335. don't want

  2336. you to

  2337. feel so

  2338. uncomfortable

  2339. that now

  2340. you don't

  2341. want to

  2342. come to

  2343. the next

  2344. birthday party

  2345. or the

  2346. next cookout

  2347. you know

  2348. so and I

  2349. know that's

  2350. not ultimately

  2351. up to me

  2352. to decide

  2353. but like

  2354. that's

  2355. sometimes

  2356. where my

  2357. mind

  2358. and my

  2359. heart

  2360. is at

  2361. I know

  2362. yeah

  2363. like we're

  2364. writing it

  2365. right now

  2366. because it

  2367. might mean

  2368. reconfiguring

  2369. all the

  2370. books in

  2371. our dining room

  2372. yeah

  2373. we are

  2374. interacting

  2375. with people

  2376. who are

  2377. definitely

  2378. not

  2379. Christian

  2380. but maybe

  2381. consider themselves

  2382. spiritual

  2383. or open

  2384. or at least

  2385. still talking

  2386. to us

  2387. I want to

  2388. have them

  2389. over

  2390. but I'm

  2391. sitting in

  2392. the seat

  2393. where they

  2394. would be

  2395. and my

  2396. eye goes

  2397. to the

  2398. blood of

  2399. Christ

  2400. washing

  2401. the blood

  2402. so now

  2403. it's like

  2404. a real

  2405. practical

  2406. issue

  2407. for me

  2408. because

  2409. us

  2410. at least

  2411. me

  2412. I don't

  2413. want them

  2414. to feel

  2415. comfortable

  2416. I don't

  2417. like

  2418. they can

  2419. be curious

  2420. and ask

  2421. tell me

  2422. about that

  2423. spine

  2424. that sounds

  2425. pretty radical

  2426. I feel

  2427. a little

  2428. uncomfortable

  2429. I'm willing

  2430. to have

  2431. that conversation

  2432. but I also

  2433. want to be

  2434. hospitable

  2435. and think

  2436. of them

  2437. and how

  2438. they might

  2439. feel

  2440. in this

  2441. space

  2442. I know

  2443. he has

  2444. all the

  2445. Bible

  2446. verses

  2447. he wrote

  2448. everything

  2449. down

  2450. but

  2451. something

  2452. came

  2453. to me

  2454. when

  2455. you just

  2456. said

  2457. it's a

  2458. come as

  2459. you are

  2460. party

  2461. this is

  2462. my sister

  2463. over here

  2464. in case

  2465. you don't

  2466. know

  2467. she's my

  2468. older

  2469. sister

  2470. Donna

  2471. and

  2472. in

  2473. biblical

  2474. times

  2475. it was

  2476. come as

  2477. you are

  2478. right

  2479. there was

  2480. no pretense

  2481. it was

  2482. here my

  2483. Lord

  2484. send me

  2485. come as

  2486. you are

  2487. those who

  2488. are weary

  2489. and

  2490. heavy burden

  2491. and I

  2492. will give

  2493. you rest

  2494. my mother

  2495. used to have

  2496. come as

  2497. you are

  2498. parties

  2499. has anybody

  2500. heard of a

  2501. come as

  2502. you are

  2503. party

  2504. and it

  2505. struck me

  2506. while we

  2507. were putting

  2508. these verses

  2509. back and

  2510. forth

  2511. now that

  2512. was in the

  2513. neighborhood

  2514. put your books

  2515. away

  2516. well you know

  2517. what those

  2518. are your books

  2519. it might be a

  2520. vehicle for

  2521. discussion

  2522. it might be

  2523. well that's a

  2524. little heavy

  2525. reading right now

  2526. but we'll talk

  2527. about it later

  2528. you know

  2529. my mother

  2530. would just

  2531. call people

  2532. in the

  2533. neighborhood

  2534. then you

  2535. had a

  2536. phone tree

  2537. you didn't

  2538. have texting

  2539. right so

  2540. you had a

  2541. phone tree

  2542. and you

  2543. knew everybody's

  2544. phone number

  2545. and it was

  2546. a come as

  2547. you are

  2548. party

  2549. and it

  2550. would be

  2551. after the

  2552. kids

  2553. were going

  2554. to sleep

  2555. or almost

  2556. ready to

  2557. go to sleep

  2558. and you

  2559. would come

  2560. as you

  2561. are

  2562. you might

  2563. be in

  2564. your pajamas

  2565. already

  2566. Mrs. Hyman

  2567. always had

  2568. rollers in her

  2569. hair

  2570. because she

  2571. was one

  2572. of the

  2573. moms that

  2574. went back

  2575. to work

  2576. part time

  2577. there would

  2578. be the

  2579. other one

  2580. that just

  2581. came from

  2582. feral

  2583. industries

  2584. or the

  2585. roofer

  2586. that still

  2587. smelled

  2588. like sawdust

  2589. and they

  2590. would just

  2591. bring whatever

  2592. they had in

  2593. their fridge

  2594. a snack

  2595. a something

  2596. and they

  2597. would just

  2598. gather

  2599. for a year

  2600. a month

  2601. they'd do it

  2602. at one house

  2603. the next month

  2604. they'd do it

  2605. at another

  2606. house

  2607. there was no

  2608. pretense

  2609. now some

  2610. people would

  2611. start getting

  2612. kind of goofy

  2613. and they'd put

  2614. on crazy

  2615. pajamas

  2616. or a silly

  2617. hat or something

  2618. but it was a

  2619. way for the

  2620. adults in the

  2621. neighborhood to

  2622. get to know

  2623. each other

  2624. when life

  2625. got

  2626. in the

  2627. way

  2628. but it

  2629. was

  2630. I remember

  2631. being in

  2632. my bedroom

  2633. like listening

  2634. to them

  2635. laugh

  2636. and share

  2637. stories

  2638. and share

  2639. their lives

  2640. and it

  2641. was really

  2642. something that

  2643. struck me

  2644. I'm sure

  2645. in the 1960s

  2646. and 70s

  2647. there was some

  2648. alcohol involved

  2649. you know

  2650. there was always

  2651. what was it

  2652. Miller

  2653. Schlitz

  2654. you know

  2655. one of the

  2656. old time

  2657. beers

  2658. but not to

  2659. an excess

  2660. it was just

  2661. a pot of

  2662. coffee

  2663. was on

  2664. and I'd

  2665. like to

  2666. think that

  2667. so many

  2668. of those

  2669. bible

  2670. interactions

  2671. will come

  2672. as you

  2673. are

  2674. interactions

  2675. without worrying

  2676. about the

  2677. four kids

  2678. that were still

  2679. screaming

  2680. or not brushing

  2681. their teeth

  2682. yet

  2683. or you know

  2684. that I didn't

  2685. have a totally

  2686. clean house

  2687. and you know

  2688. I would really

  2689. hope that we

  2690. could get over

  2691. that and

  2692. just think about

  2693. what would

  2694. God have us

  2695. do right now

  2696. yeah

  2697. I think

  2698. your last phrase

  2699. there

  2700. is really

  2701. important

  2702. what would

  2703. God have us

  2704. do

  2705. because I

  2706. think

  2707. for some

  2708. of us

  2709. you know

  2710. some people

  2711. really are

  2712. gifted in

  2713. this area

  2714. you sound

  2715. like one

  2716. of those

  2717. people

  2718. many people

  2719. on this

  2720. room

  2721. who have

  2722. sort of

  2723. a spiritual

  2724. gift

  2725. of hospitality

  2726. and then

  2727. there are

  2728. those of

  2729. us who

  2730. don't feel

  2731. that that's

  2732. what our

  2733. gift is

  2734. but that

  2735. certainly

  2736. doesn't

  2737. exempt us

  2738. from participation

  2739. and we're

  2740. called to that

  2741. but I think

  2742. maybe the

  2743. challenge for

  2744. those of us

  2745. who don't

  2746. feel gifted

  2747. in this area

  2748. is to pray

  2749. you know

  2750. to ask

  2751. the Holy Spirit

  2752. to prompt us

  2753. who is that

  2754. person

  2755. what is that

  2756. opportunity

  2757. may I have

  2758. my eyes

  2759. opened

  2760. when you

  2761. bring that

  2762. person

  2763. but that may

  2764. be even

  2765. more important

  2766. to trust

  2767. God

  2768. with what

  2769. the result

  2770. is

  2771. I think

  2772. that's

  2773. where the

  2774. time

  2775. comes in

  2776. and not

  2777. the time

  2778. to go

  2779. because we

  2780. still have

  2781. ten minutes

  2782. but you

  2783. might not

  2784. have the

  2785. gift of

  2786. hospitality

  2787. to have

  2788. somebody

  2789. in your

  2790. home

  2791. but have

  2792. you ever

  2793. given a

  2794. person a

  2795. ride to a

  2796. doctor appointment

  2797. have you

  2798. just called

  2799. somebody on

  2800. the phone

  2801. to ask how

  2802. they're doing

  2803. haven't seen

  2804. you at church

  2805. in a few

  2806. weeks

  2807. is everything

  2808. okay

  2809. or sit

  2810. down and

  2811. write out a

  2812. card that

  2813. says hey

  2814. I'm thinking

  2815. of you

  2816. let me

  2817. know how

  2818. I can

  2819. pray for

  2820. you

  2821. those are

  2822. all ways

  2823. of hospitality

  2824. because it's

  2825. coming from

  2826. the heart

  2827. and it's

  2828. giving of

  2829. your time

  2830. which is

  2831. always in

  2832. real

  2833. crunch

  2834. that many

  2835. of us

  2836. worry

  2837. very much

  2838. about what

  2839. the result

  2840. is going

  2841. to be

  2842. will that

  2843. person

  2844. leave my

  2845. house

  2846. thinking

  2847. well those

  2848. people are

  2849. really

  2850. weird

  2851. that was a

  2852. terrible

  2853. meal

  2854. and I think

  2855. maybe just

  2856. trusting God

  2857. with whatever

  2858. that is

  2859. this person

  2860. let God

  2861. take care of

  2862. the experiences

  2863. this person

  2864. has in

  2865. their home

  2866. or at the

  2867. coffee shop

  2868. or when I

  2869. talk with

  2870. them after

  2871. church

  2872. less worried

  2873. about how

  2874. we look

  2875. it's a

  2876. challenge

  2877. it's hard

  2878. somebody in

  2879. the back

  2880. making a

  2881. bunch

  2882. to your

  2883. neighbors

  2884. and we

  2885. don't invite

  2886. people in

  2887. so much

  2888. as I

  2889. bring

  2890. things

  2891. to the

  2892. next one

  2893. there's two

  2894. twins that

  2895. are busy

  2896. all the time

  2897. she's working

  2898. all the time

  2899. her husband's

  2900. working all

  2901. the time

  2902. I walk

  2903. over with

  2904. a dessert

  2905. walk across

  2906. the street

  2907. to the other

  2908. couple

  2909. that he's

  2910. working all

  2911. the time

  2912. she's a

  2913. teacher

  2914. and there's

  2915. two little

  2916. children

  2917. under the

  2918. age of

  2919. by

  2920. and

  2921. they're

  2922. not

  2923. available

  2924. necessarily

  2925. to come

  2926. in for a

  2927. meal

  2928. if you

  2929. invited them

  2930. they feel

  2931. guilty

  2932. that you

  2933. invited them

  2934. and they

  2935. can't reciprocate

  2936. or whatever

  2937. but you

  2938. go over

  2939. with a

  2940. plate of

  2941. cookies

  2942. you go

  2943. over

  2944. with some

  2945. brownies

  2946. or you

  2947. had half

  2948. a pie

  2949. left over

  2950. you thought

  2951. of them

  2952. and you

  2953. bring it

  2954. and you're

  2955. building

  2956. bridges

  2957. I haven't

  2958. seen

  2959. full lots

  2960. of results

  2961. yet

  2962. but you're

  2963. building

  2964. bridges

  2965. so they

  2966. feel

  2967. comfortable

  2968. that you're

  2969. there

  2970. I think

  2971. that's

  2972. important

  2973. it's

  2974. let God

  2975. do the

  2976. work

  2977. I'm not

  2978. saving

  2979. anybody

  2980. I might

  2981. not even

  2982. be the

  2983. one that

  2984. really leads

  2985. them to

  2986. the Lord

  2987. but let

  2988. God do

  2989. the work

  2990. I was

  2991. going to

  2992. add

  2993. someone

  2994. might

  2995. never

  2996. step

  2997. foot

  2998. inside

  2999. a

  3000. church

  3001. like

  3002. I'm

  3003. never

  3004. going

  3005. there

  3006. but they

  3007. might

  3008. accept

  3009. foot

  3010. they might

  3011. walk

  3012. into your

  3013. house

  3014. for dinner

  3015. and that's

  3016. a bridge

  3017. that we

  3018. can build

  3019. I don't

  3020. do

  3021. you

  3022. have to

  3023. say

  3024. God

  3025. what do you

  3026. want me

  3027. to do

  3028. put yourself

  3029. second

  3030. instead of

  3031. first

  3032. also

  3033. as to

  3034. bringing

  3035. pie to

  3036. somebody's

  3037. house

  3038. or whatever

  3039. when you

  3040. can welcome

  3041. people into

  3042. your house

  3043. that's fine

  3044. if you don't

  3045. feel comfortable

  3046. with that

  3047. take yourself

  3048. out there

  3049. I do

  3050. lots of

  3051. volunteer work

  3052. at food

  3053. pantries

  3054. and homeless

  3055. shelters

  3056. and stuff

  3057. and I'm

  3058. giving

  3059. and I am

  3060. thrilled

  3061. and that's

  3062. good news

  3063. but you have

  3064. to find out

  3065. where you

  3066. fit in this

  3067. you don't

  3068. necessarily

  3069. have to have

  3070. the gift

  3071. that Rhee

  3072. has

  3073. that Kirsten

  3074. has

  3075. for

  3076. my nickname

  3077. is Rhee

  3078. by the way

  3079. for

  3080. hospitality

  3081. but other

  3082. people do

  3083. have that

  3084. but you

  3085. have something

  3086. else

  3087. besides

  3088. that

  3089. even if

  3090. it's

  3091. the goodness

  3092. out of

  3093. your heart

  3094. it doesn't

  3095. have to be

  3096. term

  3097. hospitality

  3098. third

  3099. thing

  3100. is

  3101. we have

  3102. family in

  3103. Norway

  3104. and we

  3105. started

  3106. reunions

  3107. back in

  3108. 1990

  3109. because

  3110. a cousin

  3111. challenged me

  3112. she said

  3113. Nana used to

  3114. go to Norway

  3115. all the time

  3116. and there's

  3117. plenty of

  3118. people

  3119. why don't

  3120. you go

  3121. find some

  3122. I'm like

  3123. I'm not going

  3124. to find them

  3125. in Norway

  3126. in 1990

  3127. we had

  3128. what 13

  3129. people from

  3130. Norway

  3131. 15 years

  3132. yeah 13

  3133. people came

  3134. and they came

  3135. to Woodbridge

  3136. Church

  3137. and then

  3138. after

  3139. during that

  3140. they said

  3141. okay every

  3142. four years

  3143. we'll have

  3144. reunion

  3145. you guys

  3146. come to

  3147. where we

  3148. are

  3149. and of

  3150. course

  3151. there was

  3152. some

  3153. panic about

  3154. where we

  3155. stay

  3156. what we

  3157. do

  3158. how much

  3159. money

  3160. will it

  3161. cost you

  3162. you know

  3163. the real

  3164. deal is

  3165. you pay

  3166. for the

  3167. airfare

  3168. you go

  3169. to Norway

  3170. and the way

  3171. they put it

  3172. is we all

  3173. eat

  3174. you know

  3175. we all

  3176. sleep

  3177. there's floors

  3178. in our houses

  3179. and we have

  3180. sleeping bags

  3181. so why

  3182. worry about

  3183. all these

  3184. other things

  3185. that would

  3186. prevent you

  3187. from making

  3188. the decision

  3189. to just

  3190. be

  3191. with someone

  3192. else

  3193. yeah

  3194. yeah

  3195. thank you

  3196. for that

  3197. I want

  3198. to conclude

  3199. with just

  3200. some scriptures

  3201. and one

  3202. thing we

  3203. didn't mention

  3204. which the

  3205. scriptures

  3206. speak on

  3207. is partiality

  3208. partiality

  3209. kills the love

  3210. for strangers

  3211. and it's

  3212. interesting

  3213. in Deuteronomy

  3214. 10

  3215. before God

  3216. says to his

  3217. people to love

  3218. the stranger

  3219. he says

  3220. I am not

  3221. partial

  3222. nor do I

  3223. take a bribe

  3224. but the

  3225. Lord

  3226. you know

  3227. he says

  3228. for the

  3229. Lord your

  3230. God

  3231. is the

  3232. God of

  3233. God

  3234. and the

  3235. Lord of

  3236. Lords

  3237. the

  3238. great

  3239. the

  3240. mighty

  3241. and the

  3242. awesome

  3243. God

  3244. who does

  3245. not show

  3246. partiality

  3247. nor take

  3248. a bribe

  3249. he executes

  3250. justice

  3251. for the

  3252. orphan

  3253. and for

  3254. the

  3255. widow

  3256. and shows

  3257. his love

  3258. for the

  3259. alien

  3260. by giving

  3261. him

  3262. food

  3263. and

  3264. clothing

  3265. so

  3266. show

  3267. your

  3268. love

  3269. for

  3270. the

  3271. alien

  3272. and

  3273. it's

  3274. clear

  3275. that's

  3276. one of

  3277. the things

  3278. that prevents

  3279. us from

  3280. loving

  3281. strangers

  3282. is

  3283. a

  3284. favoritism

  3285. toward

  3286. a certain

  3287. line

  3288. in the

  3289. corner

  3290. of your

  3291. neighborhood

  3292. that's

  3293. kind of

  3294. spooky

  3295. for

  3296. Halloween

  3297. Melissa

  3298. and I

  3299. were

  3300. joking

  3301. about

  3302. that

  3303. you know

  3304. and

  3305. Jesus

  3306. healing

  3307. the

  3308. lepers

  3309. he's

  3310. washing

  3311. his

  3312. disciples

  3313. feet

  3314. and

  3315. this

  3316. clue

  3317. conclude

  3318. with

  3319. Luke

  3320. 14

  3321. Jesus

  3322. tells

  3323. us

  3324. he said

  3325. to the

  3326. man

  3327. who had

  3328. invited

  3329. him

  3330. when

  3331. you

  3332. give

  3333. a

  3334. dinner

  3335. or

  3336. a

  3337. banquet

  3338. do

  3339. not

  3340. invite

  3341. your

  3342. friends

  3343. or

  3344. your

  3345. brothers

  3346. or

  3347. your

  3348. relatives

  3349. or

  3350. rich

  3351. neighbors

  3352. lest

  3353. they

  3354. also

  3355. invite

  3356. you

  3357. in

  3358. return

  3359. and

  3360. you

  3361. be

  3362. repaid

  3363. but

  3364. when

  3365. you

  3366. give

  3367. a

  3368. feast

  3369. invite

  3370. the

  3371. poor

  3372. the

  3373. crippled

  3374. the

  3375. lame

  3376. the

  3377. blind

  3378. and

  3379. you

  3380. will

  3381. be

  3382. blessed

  3383. because

  3384. they

  3385. cannot

  3386. repay

  3387. you

  3388. for

  3389. you

  3390. will

  3391. be

  3392. repaid

  3393. at

  3394. the

  3395. resurrection

  3396. of

  3397. the

  3398. just

  3399. so

  3400. partiality

  3401. and

  3402. favoritism

  3403. toward one

  3404. specific

  3405. groups

  3406. of

  3407. people

  3408. that

  3409. also

  3410. is a

  3411. big

  3412. impediment

  3413. to

  3414. us

  3415. loving

  3416. strangers

  3417. but

  3418. if

  3419. God

  3420. does

  3421. not

  3422. take

  3423. is

  3424. not

  3425. partial

  3426. neither

  3427. downstairs

  3428. father

  3429. in

  3430. heaven

  3431. we

  3432. pray

  3433. that

  3434. you

  3435. would

  3436. give

  3437. us

  3438. a

  3439. deep

  3440. love

  3441. for

  3442. others

  3443. because

  3444. you

  3445. have

  3446. loved

  3447. us

  3448. help

  3449. us

  3450. to

  3451. really

  3452. meditate

  3453. on these

  3454. things

  3455. and to

  3456. would you

  3457. challenge

  3458. it and

  3459. convict

  3460. us

  3461. we need

  3462. to be

  3463. convicted

  3464. about

  3465. meeting

  3466. the needs

  3467. of

  3468. others

  3469. being

  3470. going
