  1. Good morning, church.

  2. Would you turn with me to Matthew chapter 6?

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  3. Matthew chapter 6, that's page 761 in the Pew Bible.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  4. We're continuing our series in the Sermon on the Mount today.

  5. We're going to focus in chapter 6 on verses 1 through 4,

  6. but to get the context, I want to read all the way to verse 21, actually.

  7. So let me pray for us, and then I will read.

  8. Father, we ask that as we come now to your word,

  9. your spirit would do his work to help us to see Christ

  10. and to see how our union with him continues to cleanse us,

  11. shape us, transform us into the kind of people

  12. that you've created and redeemed us to be.

  13. Would we see his beauty and his majesty and his glory

  14. and in beholding him become more and more like him?

  15. We pray this in Jesus' name, amen.

  16. All right, Matthew chapter 6, 1 through 21.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  17. Jesus says this,

  18. Thus, when you give to the needy,

  19. sound no trumpet before you as the hypocrites do

  20. in the synagogues and in the streets,

  21. that they may be praised by others.

  22. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

  23. But when you give to the needy,

  24. do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

  25. so that your giving may be in secret,

  26. and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  27. And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites,

  28. for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues

  29. and at the street corners that they may be seen by others.

  30. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

  31. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door

  32. and pray to your Father who is in secret,

  33. and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  34. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases

  35. as the Gentiles do,

  36. for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

  37. Do not be like them,

  38. for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

  39. Pray then like this,

  40. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

  41. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth

  42. as it is in heaven.

  43. Give us this day our daily bread,

  44. and forgive us our debts,

  45. as we also have forgiven our debtors.

  46. And lead us not into temptation,

  47. but deliver us from evil.

  48. For if you forgive others their trespasses,

  49. your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

  50. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses,

  51. neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

  52. And when you fast,

  53. do not look gloomy like the hypocrites,

  54. for they disfigure their faces,

  55. that their fasting may be seen by others.

  56. Truly, I say to you,

  57. they have received their reward.

  58. But when you fast,

  59. anoint your head and wash your face,

  60. that your fasting may not be seen by others,

  61. but by your Father who sees in secret.

  62. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  63. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,

  64. where moth and rust destroy,

  65. and where thieves break in and steal.

  66. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

  67. where neither moth nor rust destroys,

  68. and where thieves do not break in and steal.

  69. For where your treasure is,

  70. there your heart will be also.

  71. Well, if you're a basketball fan,

  72. you probably know that the college basketball season

  73. begins when?

  74. Tomorrow.

  75. Right?

  76. Monday, November 4th.

  77. Of course, if you're a UConn fan,

  78. you have to wait till a little later in the week.

  79. The women play their first game on Thursday.

  80. I think they have like a scrimmage today

  81. or some off-season game today.

  82. But the men's team will begin their season on Wednesday.

  83. Either way, all across the country, pretty soon,

  84. these athletes are going to take the court

  85. and find out what they're made of.

  86. Now, if you're like me,

  87. you'll watch them,

  88. and honestly,

  89. you'll think that they make it look so easy.

  90. Right?

  91. As they drive and pass and shoot,

  92. as they bury shot after shot

  93. from 22, 23, 24 feet away

  94. behind the three-point line,

  95. it all just seems natural, right?

  96. It seems easy.

  97. It seems like anybody could do it

  98. when you watch them.

  99. Until, that is,

  100. you actually try it yourself.

  101. Right?

  102. Until you actually try to dribble and shoot and pass,

  103. you realize it's not as easy as it looks.

  104. So what is it?

  105. How do these young women and men get so good,

  106. so natural,

  107. at something that quite honestly

  108. is really, really difficult?

  109. One word.

  110. Practice.

  111. Hours and hours and hours of practice.

  112. And that's not just true of basketball, right?

  113. Or athletics in general.

  114. Think of the hours of intentional practice

  115. represented by a great musician,

  116. or a great artist,

  117. or a great writer.

  118. You've probably heard this statistic

  119. popularized by Malcolm Gladwell

  120. that it takes 10,000 hours

  121. to become an expert in something, right?

  122. Of course, people have taken issue

  123. with that exact number.

  124. But the point is well made.

  125. The key

  126. is deliberate

  127. practice.

  128. Now,

  129. in Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  130. in chapter 5 of Matthew's gospel

  131. that we've spent nearly all of the fall

  132. studying so far,

  133. Jesus has described

  134. a way of being in the world

  135. that does not come naturally.

  136. He's described a way of

  137. complete and costly faithfulness

  138. and of utter truthfulness,

  139. a way of being in the world

  140. where we respond

  141. to evil with good,

  142. a way where

  143. we love

  144. not just our family

  145. or our neighbors,

  146. but we love

  147. even our enemies.

  148. So how do we become

  149. that sort of people?

  150. How does this

  151. unnatural,

  152. difficult way

  153. that Jesus describes

  154. become more natural,

  155. more instinctual,

  156. in us,

  157. His followers?

  158. Well,

  159. on the one hand,

  160. of course,

  161. it's God's work in us

  162. and through us

  163. through the Holy Spirit.

  164. The same Spirit

  165. that causes us

  166. to be spiritually regenerated

  167. through faith in Jesus,

  168. the same Spirit

  169. that causes us

  170. to be brought

  171. from death

  172. to life spiritually,

  173. continues His work

  174. to make us more like Jesus

  175. throughout our life.

  176. life.

  177. But if you ask

  178. any mature Christian,

  179. any mature Christian

  180. will tell you

  181. that the Holy Spirit's work

  182. doesn't happen

  183. automatically.

  184. It takes practice.

  185. And that's what

  186. this next section

  187. of the Sermon on the Mount

  188. is all about.

  189. Practice.

  190. You see,

  191. you won't become

  192. the person

  193. of chapter 5

  194. without taking up

  195. the practices

  196. of chapter 6

  197. and the other practices

  198. that are described

  199. in the New Testament.

  200. So,

  201. with that in mind,

  202. I want to consider

  203. three things today

  204. in light of this passage.

  205. First,

  206. the necessity

  207. of these spiritual practices,

  208. and then second,

  209. we're going to look

  210. at the danger of them,

  211. and then third,

  212. we'll look at the reward

  213. of spiritual practices.

  214. So,

  215. first,

  216. think about the necessity

  217. of spiritual practices.

  218. In verse 1,

  219. Jesus talks about

  220. practicing your righteousness,

  221. right?

  222. Doing things

  223. to put it into motion,

  224. to get it going,

  225. to do it,

  226. to perform it.

  227. And of course,

  228. right away in verse 1,

  229. he brings up

  230. the danger and the reward,

  231. and we'll get to those

  232. soon enough,

  233. but first,

  234. we have to see

  235. this important point,

  236. that Jesus is assuming

  237. that we will be

  238. doing these things.

  239. He lists three

  240. very common practices here,

  241. giving to the poor,

  242. praying,

  243. and fasting.

  244. And notice,

  245. Jesus doesn't say

  246. to his disciples,

  247. if you do these things,

  248. he says,

  249. when,

  250. when you do these things,

  251. when you give,

  252. when you pray,

  253. when you fast.

  254. Now,

  255. there's a big difference,

  256. right?

  257. There's a big difference

  258. if you say

  259. to your teenager,

  260. when you clean your room,

  261. be sure to change

  262. the sheets on your bed.

  263. There's a difference

  264. between saying that

  265. and,

  266. if you clean your room,

  267. be sure to change

  268. the sheets on your bed.

  269. If you say,

  270. when,

  271. then you're assuming

  272. they're going to clean

  273. the room.

  274. You're sort of telling them,

  275. clean the room.

  276. If you say,

  277. if you clean your room,

  278. then you know

  279. that the room

  280. will probably stay dirty

  281. for an indefinite

  282. period of time,

  283. right?

  284. So,

  285. Jesus isn't saying here

  286. that giving to the poor

  287. or praying

  288. or fasting

  289. are optional.

  290. We can just take them

  291. or leave them.

  292. No,

  293. he's assuming

  294. that his disciples

  295. will indeed

  296. do these things

  297. when you give.

  298. So,

  299. this underscores

  300. our first point.

  301. These practices

  302. are necessary.

  303. We might say

  304. that discipleship

  305. requires

  306. some discipline,

  307. some structure.

  308. as Paul will say

  309. in 1 Timothy 4, 7,

  310. train yourself

  311. for godliness.

  312. I think a lot of us

  313. take what we might call

  314. the Allen Iverson

  315. approach to Christianity.

  316. Do you remember

  317. the infamous interview

  318. with Allen Iverson,

  319. right?

  320. I'm supposed to be

  321. the franchise player

  322. and we're talking

  323. about practice,

  324. right?

  325. Not a game,

  326. not the game

  327. I go out there

  328. and die for,

  329. but we're talking

  330. about practice.

  331. Do you remember

  332. that clip?

  333. Right?

  334. Some of you are like,

  335. I thought that was

  336. from Ted Lasso.

  337. No,

  338. it's from Allen Iverson.

  339. YouTube it.

  340. Go figure it out.

  341. Right?

  342. You know,

  343. but the point is this.

  344. Some of us

  345. take the approach

  346. that when the moment

  347. comes,

  348. when it's game time,

  349. when we're in a situation

  350. and we need to live

  351. the way that Jesus

  352. calls us to live,

  353. the way of Matthew 5,

  354. the way of forsaking

  355. bitterness and anger,

  356. the way of living

  357. with complete purity

  358. of heart,

  359. the way of loving

  360. our enemies,

  361. the way of renouncing

  362. revenge,

  363. the way of acting

  364. with truthfulness

  365. and integrity

  366. and faithfulness,

  367. we think that in the moment

  368. when the game is on,

  369. it'll just happen

  370. automatically.

  371. But it doesn't.

  372. We lust and we lie

  373. and we curse our enemies

  374. rather than bless them.

  375. And then,

  376. in the aftermath,

  377. seeing our failures,

  378. we think,

  379. wait,

  380. I thought God's grace

  381. was supposed to make me

  382. a new person.

  383. I thought the Holy Spirit

  384. living inside of me

  385. was going to make me

  386. more like Christ

  387. from the inside out.

  388. and then you get discouraged.

  389. And maybe you even

  390. start to doubt

  391. whether the promises

  392. of Christianity

  393. are even true.

  394. Maybe this whole thing

  395. about a new life

  396. is just

  397. vain,

  398. ephemeral.

  399. But the reality is

  400. we've been skipping practice.

  401. Jesus doesn't say if,

  402. he says when.

  403. When you give to the poor,

  404. when you pray,

  405. when you fast.

  406. Have you been

  407. practicing your righteousness

  408. in these biblical ways?

  409. Consider the discipline

  410. of giving

  411. that Jesus highlights

  412. in verses 1 through 4.

  413. You see,

  414. the regular practice

  415. of giving,

  416. generously and sacrificially,

  417. especially to the poor,

  418. this practice

  419. is something

  420. that the Holy Spirit

  421. uses by his grace

  422. to shape our hearts,

  423. to shape our habits

  424. into Christlikeness.

  425. How so?

  426. Well, think of it this way.

  427. First,

  428. when we give,

  429. when we give generously

  430. and sacrificially,

  431. especially to the poor,

  432. we're acknowledging

  433. in that giving

  434. that everything

  435. that we own

  436. ultimately belongs to God.

  437. When it comes

  438. to our material possessions,

  439. we can often think,

  440. can't we,

  441. that I earned this

  442. and I can do it,

  443. do with it

  444. as I please, right?

  445. This is mine.

  446. But it's not, actually.

  447. You and I are creatures.

  448. Everything that we have

  449. is a gift from our Creator.

  450. All the gifts and talents,

  451. all the pathways

  452. and open doors

  453. that we've experienced

  454. in our life,

  455. they're all gifts.

  456. And the practice of giving

  457. works that reality

  458. into our hearts.

  459. What you and I have

  460. is not ours by rights.

  461. It's in our hands

  462. as a gift.

  463. But it's not just a gift.

  464. It's an undeserved gift, actually.

  465. You see,

  466. the truth about us as humans

  467. is not just that we're creatures

  468. made in the image of God.

  469. The truth is also

  470. that we're sinners,

  471. that we've rebelled against God,

  472. that we've not loved God

  473. with all our heart, soul,

  474. mind, and strength,

  475. that we've not kept His Word

  476. as we should.

  477. Instead, we've created

  478. and we've loved

  479. idols of our own choosing.

  480. So we don't deserve

  481. God's good gifts.

  482. We deserve the opposite, actually.

  483. We deserve God's wrath.

  484. But in Christ,

  485. God doesn't give us

  486. what we deserve.

  487. He gives us what we don't deserve.

  488. He gives us His grace.

  489. Earlier in the service,

  490. we read this from the Apostle Paul.

  491. 2 Corinthians 8-9.

  492. Paul says,

  493. For you know the grace

  494. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  495. that though He was rich,

  496. yet for your sake

  497. He became poor,

  498. so that you,

  499. by His poverty,

  500. might become rich.

  501. You see,

  502. every time we give

  503. sacrificially,

  504. especially to the poor,

  505. we're reminding ourselves

  506. of the gospel of grace.

  507. When we give,

  508. especially to those

  509. who cannot repay,

  510. right?

  511. And we do that.

  512. We give,

  513. especially to those

  514. who cannot repay,

  515. because we've been given

  516. an undeserved gift

  517. that we could never repay.

  518. So you see what's happening.

  519. This practice of giving

  520. is working into us

  521. the truths of the gospel.

  522. We're creatures

  523. who've received everything

  524. as a gift,

  525. and we're sinners

  526. who've received

  527. grace in Christ.

  528. And it's through

  529. the practice of giving

  530. that's one of the ways

  531. that we internalize

  532. this more and more deeply.

  533. And you know,

  534. if through that practice

  535. of giving

  536. you come to internalize

  537. more and more

  538. that deep reality

  539. of the gospel,

  540. then

  541. when someone

  542. asks something of you,

  543. like Jesus mentions

  544. in Matthew 5, 42,

  545. right?

  546. He says,

  547. give to the one

  548. who begs from you

  549. and do not refuse

  550. the one who would

  551. borrow from you.

  552. If you've already

  553. been in the practice,

  554. then you can step

  555. to the free-for-line

  556. and you can make the shot.

  557. Now,

  558. press a little deeper.

  559. If through giving

  560. your heart

  561. has been trained

  562. to be generous

  563. because you see

  564. more and more

  565. that everything you have

  566. is an undeserved gift,

  567. then what about

  568. when someone wrongs you?

  569. The proverbial slap

  570. on the cheek, right?

  571. How will we respond

  572. to offense?

  573. Will we suddenly

  574. grip our rights

  575. and demand repayment,

  576. an eye for an eye?

  577. Or will our hearts

  578. have the habit

  579. already ingrained

  580. to respond

  581. with generosity,

  582. even sacrificially so,

  583. even to those

  584. who may not deserve it

  585. and who can't repay us

  586. in the right way?

  587. Is not my reputation

  588. also a gift from God,

  589. an undeserved gift?

  590. Isn't that the very truth

  591. of the gospel,

  592. that we get a reputation

  593. from Christ

  594. that's not our own,

  595. that we don't deserve?

  596. So even to the offense,

  597. we can respond

  598. with generosity,

  599. turning the other cheek,

  600. giving something

  601. that's undeserved.

  602. We become the people

  603. of chapter 5

  604. through practice.

  605. Now here's the hopeful thing.

  606. Here's the hopeful thing.

  607. Whereas,

  608. turning the other cheek

  609. and giving to the one

  610. who asks us

  611. are really hard

  612. and they don't come naturally,

  613. right?

  614. This practice of giving

  615. is actually doable.

  616. It's not necessarily

  617. simple or easy,

  618. but it's doable

  619. for those who have

  620. the Holy Spirit.

  621. You see,

  622. spiritual practices

  623. are things we can do

  624. that the Holy Spirit

  625. uses to shape us

  626. into the sort of people

  627. who can then go

  628. and do the things

  629. we didn't think

  630. we could do.

  631. So this is the first point

  632. then,

  633. the necessity

  634. of spiritual practices.

  635. And I think the question is,

  636. are you and I,

  637. are we practicing?

  638. Now this leads

  639. to the second point,

  640. the danger

  641. of spiritual practices.

  642. Beware,

  643. Jesus says in verse 1.

  644. Beware.

  645. There's a danger here

  646. and the danger is this.

  647. He says,

  648. beware of practicing

  649. your righteousness

  650. before other people

  651. in order to be seen

  652. by them.

  653. You see,

  654. because of indwelling

  655. and remaining sin

  656. in our hearts,

  657. we can take

  658. a good thing

  659. like sacrificial giving,

  660. especially to those

  661. in need,

  662. and we can twist it

  663. as a means

  664. to exalt our own ego.

  665. Right?

  666. The danger

  667. is always present

  668. that we will become,

  669. as Jesus says

  670. in verse 2,

  671. like the hypocrites.

  672. Now the word hypocrite

  673. originally meant

  674. an actor,

  675. someone who wore

  676. a costume and a mask

  677. and performed a part

  678. in a drama.

  679. And what do actors do?

  680. Actors get on a stage

  681. and a crowd gathers

  682. and they perform

  683. their role

  684. for the purpose

  685. of human applause.

  686. Now just to be clear,

  687. Jesus isn't condemning

  688. the theatrical arts,

  689. right?

  690. If you're a theater major,

  691. wonderful, right?

  692. Go for it.

  693. We need Christians

  694. who are salt and light

  695. in the world of theater.

  696. Jesus is obviously

  697. making a spiritual point here.

  698. If we do engage

  699. in our spiritual practices

  700. like an actor

  701. on the stage,

  702. then that's a serious problem.

  703. That's a serious problem.

  704. After all,

  705. who are the actors

  706. when the crowd

  707. leaves the theater

  708. and the lights go down?

  709. When no one is there

  710. to see and applaud

  711. and they take off

  712. the costume

  713. and they take off

  714. the mask,

  715. who are they?

  716. They're their old self.

  717. They're not the person

  718. they were performing.

  719. They're just

  720. themselves.

  721. You see,

  722. if we do spiritual practices

  723. in order to be seen

  724. by others,

  725. Jesus says,

  726. then that's it.

  727. You have your reward.

  728. Your reward.

  729. Your reward is simply

  730. the fleeting,

  731. empty praise of humans,

  732. but you,

  733. you remain

  734. your old self.

  735. This is why

  736. seemingly godly Christians

  737. and seemingly godly

  738. Christian leaders,

  739. even those with all

  740. the right theology,

  741. even those with all

  742. the right external actions,

  743. can sin so spectacularly.

  744. Because for years

  745. and years,

  746. their spiritual practices

  747. were done primarily

  748. like an actor

  749. on the stage.

  750. They did it to be seen

  751. by others,

  752. to be seen as godly,

  753. to be seen as spiritual,

  754. to be seen as wise.

  755. But when the crowds

  756. go away

  757. and the lights went down,

  758. they took off the costume,

  759. they took off the mask,

  760. they took off the makeup,

  761. and they were unchanged.

  762. They were still

  763. their old self.

  764. Essentially,

  765. they did nothing

  766. but build up treasures

  767. on earth

  768. where moth and rust

  769. destroy

  770. and where thieves

  771. break in and steal.

  772. It was all done

  773. to be seen by others.

  774. Did you know that hypocrisy

  775. is one of the greatest reasons

  776. why people leave the church?

  777. Just time and time again,

  778. statistics show that.

  779. It's easy to point

  780. the finger at others,

  781. isn't it?

  782. What about us?

  783. When we give,

  784. are we blowing a trumpet

  785. so that others see?

  786. Of course,

  787. it's never that obvious,

  788. is it, right?

  789. Jesus isn't literally saying

  790. like there were people

  791. when the offering plate

  792. came around,

  793. they were like,

  794. boop, boop, boop, boop.

  795. You know,

  796. so.

  797. And we don't do that either,

  798. right?

  799. You're not sort of

  800. opening your wallet

  801. and sort of

  802. letting everyone see you

  803. put it in.

  804. You know,

  805. it's more likely

  806. a casual comment

  807. dropped here or there

  808. in a conversation

  809. about the charity work

  810. we did

  811. or the cause

  812. that we give to,

  813. you know.

  814. Nothing wrong

  815. with sharing what you do.

  816. There's nothing wrong,

  817. as Jesus says early

  818. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  819. with others

  820. seeing your good deeds

  821. and glorifying

  822. our Father in heaven.

  823. But sometimes

  824. we share those things

  825. in order to be seen

  826. by others,

  827. don't we?

  828. It's hoping,

  829. right?

  830. It's hoping that others

  831. will see you

  832. as a good person

  833. or a generous person

  834. or hoping that others

  835. will see you

  836. and know that you're

  837. not like those other

  838. kind of people

  839. who are selfish

  840. and stingy

  841. and don't care about

  842. economic justice

  843. like you do,

  844. right?

  845. But let's push

  846. a little deeper even.

  847. when we give,

  848. does our giving

  849. make us feel

  850. solidarity

  851. or superiority?

  852. Is our giving done

  853. because we know,

  854. we know we aren't

  855. any better

  856. than the ones

  857. that we give to

  858. and this is a way

  859. to express

  860. and forge

  861. that solidarity?

  862. Is that how we give?

  863. Or is it done

  864. as an act of superiority?

  865. Well, how do you know

  866. you're doing it

  867. as an act of superiority?

  868. How do you feel

  869. when someone

  870. doesn't say thank you?

  871. If you give

  872. sacrificially,

  873. generously,

  874. and the gift

  875. isn't acknowledged,

  876. no card,

  877. no thank you,

  878. how do you feel?

  879. How do you feel?

  880. How do you feel?

  881. It's easier,

  882. it's much easier

  883. to be a hypocrite

  884. than we think.

  885. And it's much more

  886. dangerous than we realize.

  887. Beware,

  888. Jesus says,

  889. lest

  890. our spiritual practices

  891. like giving

  892. be more about

  893. bolstering our own ego

  894. instead of humbling

  895. and transforming

  896. our hearts.

  897. So what's the answer?

  898. How do we

  899. counteract

  900. the actor,

  901. the hypocrite

  902. that's in all

  903. of our hearts?

  904. Jesus says this,

  905. he says,

  906. when you give

  907. to the needy,

  908. don't let your

  909. left hand know

  910. what your right hand

  911. is doing

  912. so that your giving

  913. may be in secret.

  914. This is something

  915. Jesus will say

  916. again and again

  917. in this passage.

  918. When you give,

  919. when you pray,

  920. when you fast,

  921. do it in secret,

  922. do it so that

  923. no one else sees.

  924. Give so anonymously,

  925. so discreetly,

  926. it's as if not even

  927. your right hand

  928. knows what your

  929. left hand's doing.

  930. What if no one

  931. ever knew,

  932. what if no one

  933. ever would know

  934. how much you gave?

  935. That's the challenge.

  936. That's the invitation

  937. that Jesus puts

  938. before us.

  939. Give in such a way

  940. that no one will see

  941. and no one will know.

  942. Then your practice

  943. will start to become

  944. more about

  945. transforming your heart

  946. and not stoking

  947. your pride.

  948. God.

  949. Now this leads

  950. on to our last point.

  951. Again, Jesus has shown

  952. us the necessity

  953. of these spiritual practices

  954. and he's pointed out

  955. the danger of doing

  956. them for the wrong reasons.

  957. And third and last,

  958. he talks about

  959. the reward of them.

  960. Let's pick up again

  961. in verse 3.

  962. He says,

  963. But when you give

  964. to the needy,

  965. do not let your

  966. left hand know

  967. what your right hand

  968. is doing so that

  969. your giving may be

  970. in secret.

  971. And your Father,

  972. who sees in secret,

  973. will reward you.

  974. When no one else

  975. sees and no one

  976. else knows,

  977. Jesus says,

  978. your heavenly Father

  979. sees and knows.

  980. Nothing is hidden

  981. from him.

  982. Nothing is secret

  983. from him.

  984. There's an old

  985. catechism that we used

  986. to do with our kids.

  987. One of the questions

  988. early on was,

  989. you know,

  990. can you see God?

  991. And the answer was,

  992. no,

  993. I cannot see God,

  994. but he always sees me.

  995. You know,

  996. it's great.

  997. But what a wonderful truth

  998. that the things we do

  999. away from the eyes

  1000. of others

  1001. in secret,

  1002. God sees

  1003. and God knows.

  1004. You see,

  1005. when we practice

  1006. giving quietly,

  1007. anonymously,

  1008. when we don't draw

  1009. attention to ourselves,

  1010. what we're doing is

  1011. is that we're weaning

  1012. our hearts

  1013. from human praise.

  1014. We're getting off

  1015. that addiction

  1016. to human praise,

  1017. and we're training

  1018. our hearts

  1019. to desire the approval

  1020. of God alone.

  1021. We're training

  1022. our hearts

1023. to want to please God,

  1024. not people.

  1025. And in so doing,

  1026. Jesus says,

  1027. there's a great reward.

  1028. You know,

  1029. it's interesting

  1030. that for Jesus

  1031. it's not a question

  1032. of whether or not

1033. a human will be motivated

  1034. by a reward,

  1035. right?

  1036. It's interesting.

  1037. Both the actor,

  1038. both the hypocrite,

  1039. and the genuine disciple

  1040. in Jesus' thinking

  1041. are after a reward.

  1042. It's just a question

  1043. of which reward

  1044. do they treasure more?

  1045. Will you go after

1046. the reward of human praise

  1047. and approval?

  1048. If so,

  1049. Jesus says,

  1050. okay,

  1051. then you'll have it.

1052. You got what you're after.

  1053. Praise and adoration.

  1054. But does it last?

  1055. And does it satisfy?

  1056. Of course not.

  1057. But notice then,

  1058. Jesus doesn't turn around

  1059. and say,

  1060. well,

  1061. the problem is

  1062. you shouldn't do things

1063. for a reward at all.

1064. You should just do them

1065. because it's the right thing

  1066. to do.

  1067. It's interesting.

1068. Jesus is much more wise,

  1069. much wiser than that.

1070. He knows that the human heart

  1071. always does something

  1072. for a reason,

  1073. for a goal,

  1074. for a telos,

  1075. for a reward.

  1076. Every deed is done

  1077. because the heart

  1078. treasures something.

  1079. The question is,

1080. what do you want to treasure?

1081. What is it you prize?

  1082. Your heavenly Father,

  1083. Jesus says,

  1084. rewards

  1085. those who give

1086. not for the praise of people

1087. but simply for the gaze

  1088. of God.

1089. And what is that reward?

  1090. What is the reward

1091. that Jesus talks about here?

  1092. Well,

  1093. I think it's safe to say

  1094. that it's certainly

  1095. not a material reward.

1096. It's not as if Jesus

  1097. is saying that God

  1098. promises us

  1099. masses of earthly wealth

  1100. and health

1101. if we give to the needy,

  1102. right?

  1103. Well,

  1104. if that's not it,

  1105. then what is it?

  1106. Well,

  1107. one of the rewards

  1108. that we mentioned

  1109. we've already talked about

  1110. in the first point,

  1111. right?

  1112. One of the rewards

  1113. is being forged

  1114. more and more

  1115. into genuine

  1116. Christ-like character.

1117. The Father will make us

  1118. by the Holy Spirit

1119. more and more like Christ,

  1120. more and more

1121. like the sort of people

  1122. that Jesus describes

  1123. in Matthew 5.

  1124. You see,

  1125. when the actors

  1126. have no one around,

1127. when the crowds go home

1128. and the lights go down,

  1129. when they take off

  1130. their mask

  1131. and their costume,

  1132. who are they?

  1133. They're their old self,

  1134. right?

1135. But for the genuine disciple,

1136. when the crowds go home

1137. and the lights go off,

  1138. who are they?

  1139. They're becoming

  1140. something new.

  1141. not their old self,

  1142. but their true self,

  1143. you see.

  1144. Right there,

  1145. whether people are watching

  1146. or not watching,

  1147. they're like a new tree

1148. pushing up through the dirt

1149. with roots that are sinking down

  1150. deeper and deeper

1151. and their branches are spreading

1152. and their leaves are evergreen

  1153. and they're bearing fruit

1154. in season and out of season.

  1155. That's what's happening.

  1156. And you know,

  1157. unlike the fleeting praise

  1158. of people,

  1159. this reward,

  1160. it never fades.

  1161. This is the treasure

  1162. that doesn't rust

  1163. and doesn't decay

  1164. and that thieves

  1165. can never break in

  1166. and steal it.

  1167. It will extend

  1168. into eternity,

  1169. into the new heavens

  1170. and new earth.

  1171. In fact,

  1172. becoming your true self

  1173. in Christ,

  1174. it is that coming

  1175. new creation

  1176. right now

  1177. sprouting forth

  1178. in the present.

  1179. We're becoming partakers

  1180. of the divine nature,

  1181. as Peter says

  1182. in his second letter.

  1183. But you know,

  1184. I think there's another

  1185. sense to this reward

  1186. that Jesus talks about

  1187. and in some sense

  1188. it's much simpler

  1189. and it's much more

  1190. straightforward,

1191. but it's no less profound.

1192. As we look at this passage,

  1193. you know,

  1194. compare it, right?

  1195. If the reward

  1196. for the actors,

  1197. for the hypocrites,

  1198. is human praise

  1199. and approval,

  1200. if it's glory

  1201. in the eyes

  1202. of other people,

  1203. then what's the reward

  1204. of the genuine disciple?

  1205. Not the praise

  1206. or approval of humans,

  1207. but the praise

  1208. and approval of God.

  1209. The fatherly word

  1210. of assurance.

  1211. The simple smile

  1212. of God

  1213. upon his daughters

  1214. and sons,

  1215. saying,

  1216. I'm yours

  1217. and you're mine.

  1218. Well done,

  1219. good and faithful servant.

1220. Tolkien wrote this beautiful line

1221. in the Lord of the Rings.

  1222. He said,

  1223. the praise

  1224. of the praiseworthy

  1225. is above all rewards.

1226. To know that God sees

  1227. and God knows

  1228. and he is pleased,

1229. is there any greater reward?

  1230. the one who created

  1231. the stars

  1232. and the planets

  1233. and all their brilliance,

  1234. the mountains,

  1235. the seas,

  1236. the one whose glory

  1237. shines forth

  1238. with every rising sun

  1239. and every winter frost,

1240. the God who is so

  1241. unbelievably good

  1242. and holy

  1243. and beautiful,

1244. the God who is surrounded

  1245. in unending praise

  1246. for all eternity,

  1247. right?

  1248. This God

  1249. whom just a glimpse,

  1250. just a glimpse

  1251. of this God

  1252. would be either

  1253. total terror

  1254. for the unforgiven

  1255. or total ravishing delight

  1256. for those whose sins

  1257. have been forgiven.

  1258. That God

  1259. looks upon us

1260. as his children in Christ

  1261. and says,

  1262. that's my son,

  1263. that's my daughter,

1264. with them I'm well pleased.

  1265. Christ.

  1266. The praise

  1267. of the praiseworthy

  1268. is above all rewards.

  1269. The question is,

  1270. are you in Christ?

1271. Are you in this kind

  1272. of relationship

  1273. with God

  1274. as your heavenly Father?

  1275. You see,

  1276. we've talked a lot

  1277. about practices this morning,

  1278. but the truth is

  1279. you don't become

  1280. a forgiven son

  1281. or daughter of God

  1282. through practice.

  1283. That's not how you

  1284. get into the family.

1285. That's not what makes you

1286. a Christian in the first place.

1287. You can't give your way

  1288. into God's forgiveness

1289. and you can't purchase it

  1290. or buy it

  1291. or earn it.

1292. You can only receive it.

  1293. Go back again

1294. to the words of Paul,

1295. for you know the grace

1296. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1297. that though he was rich,

  1298. yet for your sakes

  1299. he became poor.

  1300. Why?

  1301. So that you,

  1302. by his poverty,

  1303. could become rich.

  1304. That's the exchange

  1305. that makes someone

  1306. a Christian,

  1307. that brings them

  1308. into this saving relationship

  1309. with God

  1310. as their heavenly Father.

  1311. And when did Christ

  1312. become poor?

  1313. Well, at the cross,

  1314. when he emptied himself

1315. and died in the place

  1316. of sinners.

1317. When every debt of sin

  1318. that we had accrued

  1319. throughout our whole life,

  1320. Christ willingly took

  1321. upon himself.

  1322. And how does Christ

1323. becoming poor in that way

  1324. make us rich?

  1325. Because as he takes

  1326. all of our debt,

1327. he gives us in exchange

  1328. his righteous record,

  1329. his perfect life.

  1330. All the wealth

  1331. that he has merited

  1332. through his perfect life

  1333. is credited to us

  1334. simply through faith.

  1335. To all those

  1336. who admit

  1337. that they're spiritually

  1338. bankrupt before God

  1339. and receive Christ,

  1340. his record's credited

  1341. to you.

1342. And you have no lack.

  1343. Friend, is that true

  1344. of you this morning?

  1345. If not,

  1346. then take Christ

  1347. by faith.

  1348. Let him take

  1349. your debts

  1350. and receive from him

  1351. that massive wealth

  1352. of his grace

  1353. and favor

  1354. and know God

  1355. as your heavenly Father.

1356. And if that is true

  1357. of you,

  1358. if you are

  1359. in that saving relationship

  1360. with Christ,

  1361. then practice

  1362. these things.

  1363. Put them into practice

1364. and grow in this grace

  1365. that you've been given.

  1366. Exercise it

  1367. into every area

  1368. of your life.

  1369. And Jesus promises

  1370. that as you do,

  1371. your reward

  1372. will be very great.

  1373. Let's pray together.

  1374. Father,

  1375. as we turn

1376. to the Lord's Supper now,

  1377. we ask that you

  1378. would take these things

  1379. by your Holy Spirit

  1380. and make them real

  1381. to our hearts.

  1382. God,

  1383. help us

  1384. to take off

  1385. our masks,

  1386. heal us

  1387. of our desire

  1388. and our longing

  1389. for the praise

  1390. of people

  1391. and give us hearts

  1392. that live

  1393. for your praise

  1394. alone.

  1395. We ask this

  1396. in Jesus' name.

  1397. Amen.

  1398. Amen.

  1399. Amen.
