  1. Well, good morning.

  2. I do have one other quick announcement

  3. that I heard from Chris Hill this morning.

  4. Next Saturday is our Rake and Run event,

  5. which is youth group and others are helping to rake people's lawns.

  6. Now, you may have noticed in the last week,

  7. all the leaves from all the trees fell onto the ground,

  8. except for the oak tree in my backyard,

  9. which is still holding back half of it for November or December.

  10. So it's holding back.

  11. But if you have a lawn and would like help getting it raked,

  12. or if you have a neighbor who has a lawn

  13. and they would use help being raked,

  14. if you could please contact Chris Hill.

  15. His contact information, this announcement's been in the weekly email.

  16. It's on the website as well.

  17. I just wanted to mention that

  18. because he still has space in his slots for more people.

  19. So contact him to see whether that will work into the plans,

  20. but they would love to serve more than what they have signed up for right now.

  21. All right.

  22. Well, this morning, I have a desire,

  23. and that is to renew your and my prayer lives.

  24. Whenever we talk about prayer, it's easy to just feel guilty, right?

  25. It's kind of like, how's your diet going?

  26. How's your prayer life going?

  27. It's always going to be guilt-inducing whenever we talk about it.

  28. And it's easy for us to fall into seeing prayer as a duty and not a delight.

  29. But in fact, prayer is a gift,

  30. and I hope to renew that joy that God intends for us to have in prayer this morning.

  31. Why am I talking about this?

  32. Well, because this is what Jesus is talking about this morning in the Sermon on the Mount.

  33. We're in a series going through Matthew chapters 5 through 7,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  34. and Jesus is proclaiming the kingdom that he is bringing,

  35. the distinctive nature of the kingdom that he will bring as he is coming into the world.

  36. And as we've seen over and over again,

  37. one of the major things is that it is marked not by external conformity,

  38. but by heart transformation.

  39. And what we see in chapter 6 of Matthew is one of three…

  40. we see three spiritual disciplines,

  41. and if you want to hear more about that,

  42. Pastor Nick preached a great sermon that was a bit of an overview of this whole section

  43. about the way that spiritual disciplines are God's gifts

  44. to train our hearts to be active in pursuing his kingdom in the right ways.

  45. And Jesus assumes that when we pray, when we give, when we fast,

  46. that we're doing these things,

  47. and he wants to instruct us on how to do it.

  48. Not like the first century Jews,

  49. not like the non-Jewish people of the first century,

  50. but distinctively praying as followers of Jesus.

  51. So that's what we're going to look at this morning.

  52. If you want to turn in your pew Bible,

  53. we're going to be on page 761.

  54. We're going to be looking at Matthew 6, verses 5 through 15,

    Matthew 6:5–15

  55. and we're going to be looking at the question,

  56. what does Jesus have to say to us about prayer this morning?

  57. Let's go ahead and read the passage,

  58. and then we'll pray and ask God for his help in understanding it.

  59. Matthew chapter 6, starting in verse 5.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  60. And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites,

  61. for they love to stand and pray in the synagogue and at the street corners,

  62. that they may be seen by others.

  63. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

  64. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door

  65. and pray to your Father who is in secret,

  66. and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  67. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do,

  68. for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

  69. Do not be like them,

  70. for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

  71. Pray then like this.

  72. Our Father in heaven,

  73. hallowed be your name.

  74. Your kingdom come,

  75. your will be done,

  76. on earth as it is in heaven.

  77. Give us this day our daily bread,

  78. and forgive us our debts,

  79. as we also have forgiven our debtors.

  80. And lead us not into temptation,

  81. but deliver us from evil.

  82. For if you forgive others their trespasses,

  83. your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

  84. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses,

  85. neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

  86. This is God's Word.

  87. Will you pray with me?

  88. Lord, thank you for this word.

  89. We thank you that in your, Lord, infinite wisdom,

  90. you have given us instruction on how it is that we might pray to you.

  91. And Lord, we need this.

  92. I need this this morning.

  93. Lord, by your Holy Spirit,

  94. teach our hearts to delight in your ways.

  95. Teach our minds to think after your thoughts.

  96. Teach our will and our hands to do what you have called us to do.

  97. Lord, we pray that we might know you more

  98. in the grace that you've shown us in the gospel this morning.

  99. May we sit under your word this morning, we pray.

  100. In Jesus' name, amen.

  101. Amen.

  102. Amen.

  103. Kingdom prayer frees us from our self-centered hearts

  104. to live a God-centered life.

  105. So we're going to look at this in two sections.

  106. They're not balanced in length.

  107. The first section is verses 5 and 6

  108. about how kingdom prayer frees us from self-centered religion

  109. to communion with God.

  110. And verses 7 through 15,

  111. kingdom prayer frees us from self-reliant religion

  112. to trusting God.

  113. So let's see how this plays out

  114. and what it is that Jesus has to tell us this morning about prayer.

  115. Starting then in verses 5 and 6,

  116. how kingdom prayer frees us from self-centered religion.

  117. Jesus starts by saying in verse 5,

  118. when you pray, you must not be.

  119. So he's starting with a negative example.

  120. He says you must not be like the hypocrites.

  121. And if you remember from last week,

  122. Pastor Nick talked about how hypocrites in Greek culture

  123. were those who were actors who wore a mask.

  124. And so they put on an external thing

  125. to play a role that didn't match the internal reality

  126. of their being in their heart.

  127. And this created a dissonance.

  128. And Jesus says don't be like these people

  129. who are disintegrated between their outside and their inside.

  130. He goes on to explain what does this look like for them.

  131. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues

  132. and at the street corners that they may be seen by others.

  133. And here Jesus hones in and focuses on the heart issue

  134. that he really wants to get at in this first point about prayer,

  135. that they may be seen by others.

  136. Right?

  137. Jesus isn't saying they shouldn't be praying in the synagogues.

  138. He isn't saying that they shouldn't be praying on the street corners.

  139. He isn't saying that you shouldn't be standing while you pray.

  140. What he is saying is if you are praying to be seen by others,

  141. this is the problem.

  142. This is not a benign visibility where I want to live my life before others

  143. so they can see God's gracious work in me.

  144. This is a thirst and a hunger for the praise and acclaim of others.

  145. This is a desire for us to improve our reputation

  146. so that people will think,

  147. oh, he's a great spiritual man or woman.

  148. Look at the way he prays.

  149. It's possible that some in the first century in the Jewish community

  150. would time their day and their travels

  151. so that they might find themselves on the right street corner

  152. to be seen by the maximum number of people

  153. when their time for prayer would come about during the day,

  154. calculating so that they might be seen by the most number of people

  155. as they pray or to make sure they get the right seat in the synagogue

  156. so when they stand up, everyone says,

  157. oh, yes, brother so-and-so is praying again today.

  158. What a great prayer he is.

  159. Friends, there can be such a danger, isn't it,

  160. in us just wanting to look spiritual

  161. rather than being spiritual

  162. because when we look spiritual,

  163. when we think other people think of us as spiritual people,

  164. it helps us.

  165. We feel secure.

  166. We feel important.

  167. We feel worthwhile in the religious community around us.

  168. But in doing so,

  169. we take something that God intended for us to be towards him

  170. and we turn it towards others.

  171. And we do it for our own selfish ego boost.

  172. And Jesus does warn us.

  173. He says,

  174. if you do that,

  175. you will have your reward.

  176. Because we all know this is true, right?

  177. We all know it's easy,

  178. even in a church,

  179. even in a good church,

  180. even in a Bible church,

  181. even in a humble church,

  182. it's so easy for us to fall into this looking good before others

  183. and other people are going to give us praise for it,

  184. for our performance.

  185. But Jesus says we are not to pray like this.

  186. This is a misguided application

  187. of the principle and the practice of prayer.

  188. He says,

  189. instead,

  190. we should be seeking communion

  191. with our Father

  192. who sees

  193. not in this assembly,

  194. but who sees in secret.

  195. He says,

  196. go to your room.

  197. And it's fun.

  198. Do a little word nerdery into this.

  199. Your room is probably

  200. a storehouse

  201. in the middle of a first century home

  202. that had no windows

  203. so that no one could see in

  204. and was often the place

  205. where the treasures of the household

  206. would be kept

  207. because they'd be most protected

  208. and you couldn't break the window

  209. to reach in and steal them.

  210. I think there's richness

  211. in that imagery of

  212. this is the room to go in

  213. where no one can see you

  214. but God Himself.

  215. Just a side note.

  216. Jesus is not precluding public prayer.

  217. Obviously, we just did it.

  218. We'll do it again.

  219. Right?

  220. He's not saying that we shouldn't do this.

  221. Jesus Himself prayed in public

  222. when He fed the 5,000

  223. before He raised Lazarus from the dead.

  224. And the epistles seem to indicate

  225. in 1 Timothy 2

  226. and in 1 Corinthians 11

  227. that in the assembly

  228. people are praying before others.

  229. So it's not a complete condemnation

  230. of public prayer.

  231. But again, it's the heart attitude.

  232. When you pray,

  233. and the instruction here is to say,

  234. do the practice of closet prayer

  235. so that you learn

  236. that prayer is about communion with God.

  237. So that even when you're praying

  238. with others around,

  239. you're not looking at them,

  240. but you are looking at God.

  241. He is to be our focus.

  242. And friends,

  243. what a great and wonderful

  244. and beautiful invitation this is.

  245. That God invites us

  246. to actually talk to Him.

  247. Think about how distinctive that is

  248. from religions of the world.

  249. How many people feel

  250. are invited by their God

  251. to come and have communion with Him

  252. in a secret room.

  253. And friends,

  254. we need to be careful too

  255. that this communion

  256. isn't a baptized version

  257. of what's running around

  258. in our world today

  259. of simply mindfulness.

  260. Now I want to be careful here.

  261. Mindfulness done properly

  262. can be a helpful technique.

  263. It helps us recognize

  264. how our bodily positioning

  265. and rhythms can affect

  266. how we are in the world.

  267. It can help us grow

  268. in self-awareness

  269. of the things it causes.

  270. But so often,

  271. mindfulness in our world

  272. has replaced communion with God.

  273. And mindfulness

  274. can so easily be

  275. emptying ourselves,

  276. but ultimately,

  277. it's actually still focused on us.

  278. I want to be at peace.

  279. I want to feel peace.

  280. I want to lay aside my anxieties.

  281. And ultimately,

  282. it's about us.

  283. But when God invites us to prayer,

  284. He says,

  285. we are to go into prayer

  286. so that we can look to Him

  287. and have communion with Him.

  288. And if some of the techniques

  289. of bodily position

  290. or quieting your mind,

  291. if that's helpful

  292. in getting you there,

  293. that's great.

  294. But make sure that God

  295. is the end of it

  296. and the goal of it

  297. and the center of it,

  298. that you might have fellowship

  299. with Him.

  300. And recognize that

  301. in all of this passage,

  302. have you noticed

  303. how many times

  304. Jesus reminds us

  305. that it's not just to God,

  306. the transcendent God

  307. who is the creator

  308. of all the world,

  309. but God, our Father,

  310. who sees in secret.

  311. Ten times in 18 verses,

  312. Jesus calls God,

  313. our Father.

  314. He is a Father

  315. who delights

  316. when we turn to Him,

  317. when we run to Him

  318. to tell Him about our day,

  319. when we call on Him

  320. in an emergency,

  321. because we need to hear His voice

  322. and we need to hear His instruction

  323. and we need to know His embrace

  324. and His comfort.

  325. He delights when we come to Him

  326. with a single-minded devotion,

  327. love, and dependence.

  328. He delights when we know

  329. that He is always there,

  330. that He always loves,

  331. that He always hears,

  332. that He always sees.

  333. this is the Heavenly Father

  334. that Jesus knows

  335. and calls us

  336. to be in prayer with.

  337. Some of us haven't had

  338. human fathers like that,

  339. and it's hard to imagine God

  340. being like that.

  341. But let the Scriptures

  342. transform not only your thoughts,

  343. but your emotional pathways

  344. to see that God is a God

  345. who loves you

  346. and delights for you

  347. to come to Him

  348. in communion.

  349. So do you see then

  350. this pattern,

  351. how it frees us

  352. from the performing,

  353. self-centered,

  354. religious prayer

  355. that so often

  356. we fall into?

  357. Right?

  358. At a church like Trinity,

  359. we might fall into

  360. a danger of preaching

  361. rather than praying.

  362. Have you ever noticed that?

  363. Sometimes we want to say

  364. so much about God

  365. that we're not talking

  366. to Him in our prayers.

  367. Something for us

  368. to grow in.

  369. Sometimes,

  370. here at Trinity,

  371. we're too self-conscious

  372. about being theologically

  373. correct and precise,

  374. and some of us feel like,

  375. oh, I can't pray at all

  376. in this church.

  377. Oh my gosh, no.

  378. I might say something wrong.

  379. Do you see how both of those

  380. are still very self-centered prayer?

  381. They're not looking to God

  382. who is our Heavenly Father

  383. who invites us.

  384. And if we stumble,

  385. and if our theology

  386. isn't always right,

  387. we can gently encourage

  388. one another towards the truth,

  389. but let us have freedom

  390. in prayer in this.

  391. What does it look like

  392. to go into your closet?

  393. Some of you are really busy people.

  394. You never get five minutes

  395. to yourself,

  396. it feels like,

  397. during your day.

  398. What does it look like?

  399. Maybe it's prayer along the way.

  400. Maybe it's praying in the car

  401. as you're running errands.

  402. Maybe it's prayer before bed

  403. or when you wake up

  404. in the morning.

  405. And look, there's no form.

  406. You can walk.

  407. You can kneel.

  408. You can sit.

  409. You can stand.

  410. You can do it anywhere.

  411. You can do it anywhere.

  412. And you know what?

  413. If you need to,

  414. the church is open

  415. from nine to four every day.

  416. Come here if you want to come

  417. and just sit in the quiet

  418. and pray if you have

  419. that freedom of time.

  420. You can speak your prayers.

  421. You can think your prayers.

  422. You can write your prayers.

  423. You can sing your prayers.

  424. You can turn them

  425. into spoken word poems.

  426. Do whatever you want to to pray.

  427. God gives us great freedom

  428. and form and place

  429. because He wants us to come

  430. into communion with Him.

  431. So this is the first thing

  432. Jesus teaches us.

  433. Don't fall into self-centered

  434. religious prayer,

  435. but let it be a pursuing

  436. of communion with God

  437. as we pray.

  438. Jesus then goes on,

  439. and if you're noticing,

  440. Pastor Nick mentioned

  441. this last week,

  442. there's this pattern

  443. verses three and four is one

  444. and then verses five and six is one

  445. and then we'll see

  446. verses 16 and 18.

  447. It's almost a formulaic pattern.

  448. Verse seven,

  449. Jesus breaks out of it completely.

  450. He's like,

  451. oh, I have more to say to you

  452. about prayer than just this pattern.

  453. So here we go.

  454. He says,

  455. kingdom prayer frees us

  456. from self-reliant religion.

  457. To trust God.

  458. So,

  459. he's already said,

  460. don't be like the Jewish people

  461. who do it to be seen by others.

  462. That's their fault.

  463. That's their heart condition.

  464. It's not just because they're Jewish.

  465. It's because their heart is wrong,

  466. right?

  467. And now he goes after the Gentiles.

  468. And the Gentiles here

  469. don't mean their ethnic identity.

  470. It means people who don't know God.

  471. People who worship other gods

  472. who are atheists.

  473. People who just don't know God at all.

  474. And he says,

  475. what do they do?

  476. Look with me in verse seven.

  477. When you pray,

  478. do not heap up empty phrases

  479. as the Gentiles do,

  480. for they think that they will be heard

  481. for their many words.

  482. Empty phrases is a fascinating word.

  483. It's only used once,

  484. not only here in the Bible,

  485. but throughout all of antiquity.

  486. This is the only time

  487. this word has ever been used.

  488. So we have lots of translations.

  489. Some say babbling.

  490. Some say vain repetition.

  491. Some say,

  492. as the ESV,

  493. heap up empty phrases.

  494. Another says thoughtless repetition.

  495. At the core of it,

  496. what's the problem?

  497. Again,

  498. the form is not the key,

  499. but it's the heart

  500. that's the key.

  501. That they will be heard

  502. for their many words.

  503. Artie France just mentions

  504. that prayer in the non-Jewish world

  505. in the first century

  506. was often characterized

  507. particularly by formal invocations

  508. and magical incantations

  509. in which the correct repetition

  510. counts rather than the worshiper's

  511. attitude or intention.

  512. This seems to be at the heart

  513. of what Jesus is warning us against.

  514. And we might talk about other religions

  515. and how other religions pray,

  516. but I want to focus in

  517. on how we as the church,

  518. broadly speaking,

  519. has fallen into some

  520. of these patterns ourselves.

  521. Right?

  522. And I want to be careful

  523. because there is a joy in learning.

  524. I have experienced great joy

  525. in learning from brothers and sisters

  526. from different theological traditions,

  527. from different parts of the world,

  528. different cultures.

  529. So I want to be careful to say

  530. there's lots for us to learn

  531. from one another about how to pray.

  532. But here are two strands

  533. that I could see

  534. that maybe we would fall into

  535. around here that might be dangerous.

  536. One is because we live

  537. in a predominantly Catholic,

  538. I don't typically pick this out,

  539. but the praying of the rosary

  540. is problematic

  541. in light of Jesus' teachings here.

  542. Okay?

  543. If you don't know,

  544. the rosary is a necklace

  545. and there's a process

  546. that you go through

  547. and you pray through things.

  548. And there are ways in which

  549. it could be a helpful tool.

  550. But in the midst of it,

  551. there's a repetition

  552. three times

  553. and then ten times,

  554. multiple times,

  555. of Hail Mary,

  556. full of grace.

  557. Right?

  558. And apart from the theological

  559. misdirection of prayer

  560. that is a serious problem

  561. because we're not called ever

  562. to pray to Mary,

  563. there's also this pattern

  564. of repetition

  565. that seems to be

  566. a heaping up

  567. of saying the same thing

  568. over and over and over again.

  569. The official Catholic website says,

  570. repetition is to help us

  571. to calm your head.

  572. But when I look at this pattern,

  573. I think,

  574. really?

  575. Three times?

  576. Ten times?

  577. Over and over again?

  578. This is how everyone

  579. ought to pray

  580. all the time?

  581. How easy is this

  582. to start to feel like

  583. it's mechanical

  584. or magical

  585. and formulaic?

  586. So that's on one end

  587. of the spectrum.

  588. There's another kind

  589. of problem with prayer.

  590. This comes more

  591. from the Pentecostal

  592. charismatic end

  593. of the church

  594. where there's a deep rejection

  595. of all liturgy,

  596. of all formal...

  597. But there is,

  598. at times,

  599. what creeps in

  600. is this kind

  601. of magical thinking.

  602. If we pray

  603. the name of Jesus

  604. in just the right way,

  605. there is power

  606. and we're going to repeat it

  607. over and over again.

  608. And in that,

  609. we're going to see

  610. God moved

  611. and the world changed.

  612. And friends,

  613. I have to tell you,

  614. the kind of repetition

  615. that I hear

  616. sounds a lot like

  617. what Jesus

  618. is concerned about here.

  619. because remember,

  620. what is He concerned

  621. about the most?

  622. That God will hear us

  623. because of our many words.

  624. Friends,

  625. is this the God

  626. of the Bible?

  627. Right?

  628. This is a fundamental

  629. misunderstanding of prayer

  630. because it's a misunderstanding

  631. of who God is.

  632. God doesn't need us

  633. to come to Him

  634. in a particular form

  635. or a particular way.

  636. He is not impressed

  637. or moved by the volume

  638. or the repetition

  639. of how many times

  640. we pray for something.

  641. Verse 8 is so central here.

  642. God knows what you need.

  643. Is God going to be moved

  644. because you say,

  645. hey God,

  646. I have this need

  647. that you don't know about.

  648. What does He not know about?

  649. God,

  650. I have this thing

  651. that I deeply care about.

  652. Can you please do something?

  653. As if He didn't already

  654. care about you

  655. and the situation

  656. you're praying about.

  657. God knows these things.

  658. Don't believe

  659. that you're going to move God

  660. to do something

  661. He doesn't want to do

  662. because of how you pray.

  663. We're not informing God

  664. or convincing Him

  665. by how we pray.

  666. God is a good

  667. and a loving

  668. and a heavenly Father

  669. and He delights in us

  670. as we come to Him.

  671. Every parent knows this.

  672. We know the needs

  673. of our kids

  674. and sometimes

  675. when they come

  676. and ask for it,

  677. it gives us great joy

  678. to respond

  679. in a particular way

  680. in that moment.

  681. But our provision

  682. is not contingent

  683. upon them asking

  684. and our love for them

  685. is not contingent

  686. on how they ask.

  687. God is a good Father.

  688. And because this is true,

  689. it means

  690. some liturgical prayer

  691. can be great.

  692. It can be really useful.

  693. I've been really helped

  694. by reading

  695. and sometimes

  696. even actually

  697. just praying the words

  698. of historical prayers.

  699. The Valley of Vision

  700. is a great book

  701. that's a book

  702. of Puritan prayers

  703. or Every Moment Holy

  704. that you may have seen

  705. that's prayer

  706. in everyday life.

  707. These are helpful tools

  708. when we use them

  709. to tune our heart

  710. and to go to God,

  711. not because we think

  712. He's going to hear us

  713. by how we do it,

  714. but because these help us

  715. in our prayer to God.

  716. And it's okay for us

  717. to pray for a long time.

  718. Martin Luther used to get up

  719. and pray for three hours.

  720. Now, he was a monk,

  721. so maybe he had a little

  722. latent Catholicism in that.

  723. But even so,

  724. he, you know,

  725. it's okay for us

  726. to pray for a long time

  727. as long as we don't think,

  728. well, I'm going to be

  729. more spiritual

  730. and people are going to think

  731. I'm a greater person

  732. because I pray longer

  733. or God's going to hear me more

  734. because I pray longer.

  735. Those are the things

  736. that Jesus is saying.

  737. Don't fall into these traps

  738. because when we do that,

  739. prayer gets misguided,

  740. misdirected.

  741. Rather than having communion

  742. with God, our Father,

  743. it becomes something else.

  744. And so having warned us

  745. about all these things,

  746. Jesus gives us a form.

  747. He gives us a model prayer

  748. that we can repeat verbatim

  749. or we can use it as a model

  750. to think about how we pray.

  751. It's called the Lord's Prayer.

  752. You heard me

  753. when I read it earlier

  754. and it seems that it was

  755. picked up early in the church

  756. and used repetitively

  757. or regularly in gatherings

  758. of corporate worship.

  759. Some of you may wonder,

  760. what about the ending?

  761. For thine is the kingdom

  762. and the glory

  763. and the power forever and ever.

  764. Amen.

  765. That I grew up learning

  766. when I was a kid

  767. in the church that I grew up in.

  768. Well, the church added that

  769. maybe from a verse in,

  770. sorry, I didn't put it in my notes.

  771. I can't remember.

  772. Second Chronicles,

  773. First Chronicles,

  774. something or other.

  775. They pulled this phrase

  776. from somewhere else

  777. and added it on to the end

  778. in the form that the church used

  779. outside of the Scriptures.

  780. It's okay that we did that.

  781. It makes it a rich prayer, right?

  782. It's scriptural.

  783. But it's not here.

  784. It's not what Jesus taught

  785. in Matthew 6.

  786. He gives us this form to pray.

  787. Now, you're all looking

  788. at your clocks and thinking,

  789. oh my gosh,

  790. is He going to preach

  791. through all of this now?

  792. It's already 1115.

  793. So, here's the good news.

  794. We're going to come back to this.

  795. We're going to preach this week.

  796. We're going to have

  797. a Thanksgiving service,

  798. testimony service next week.

  799. We're going to preach

  800. one more time on fasting.

  801. Then we're going to go into Advent.

  802. And on January 5th,

  803. we're going to come back

  804. to the Lord's Prayer.

  805. And we're going to preach through it

  806. line by line

  807. through January and February.

  808. So, we're going to do this deep dive.

  809. So, I'm going to do it

  810. at a really high level

  811. for the next few minutes.

  812. What does Jesus teach us

  813. in this model of prayer?

  814. The first thing is

  815. He starts with a God-centered focus.

  816. Our Father who is in heaven,

  817. hallowed,

  818. that is,

  819. make holy

  820. or set apart

  821. your name

  822. is great

  823. and beautiful.

  824. Jesus says,

  825. when we pray,

  826. let's start by looking at God,

  827. the personal

  828. and transcendent God

  829. who invites us

  830. as a heavenly Father

  831. to come to Him

  832. because He is benevolent

  833. and gracious.

  834. And then,

  835. Thy kingdom come,

  836. Thy will be done

  837. on earth

  838. as it is in heaven.

  839. Our focus is not,

  840. God, this is what I need

  841. and this is what I want

  842. and this is how I want you

  843. to act in the world.

  844. But God,

  845. what do you want in this world?

  846. What do you,

  847. what is your plan?

  848. What is your will?

  849. How is your kingdom

  850. going to come to this earth?

  851. Not my kingdom coming to heaven,

  852. but your kingdom coming to earth.

  853. We start with a God-centered expression

  854. because we want to orient our hearts

  855. towards Him.

  856. And then from that,

  857. Jesus says,

  858. and then having fixed our eyes on Him,

  859. then we can say,

  860. give us this day

  861. our daily bread.

  862. God, provide for our everyday needs.

  863. You know them all.

  864. You are the one who provides

  865. all that we have.

  866. Lord, we are reminding ourselves

  867. and reminding you,

  868. God, you will provide.

  869. Give us this day

  870. our daily bread.

  871. But recognize that

  872. as He talks about His needs,

  873. He doesn't go on about

  874. my car that needs repaired

  875. and Aunt Josie's,

  876. you know,

  877. corns on her toe.

  878. Look, it's fine to pray

  879. for all of those things.

  880. But recognize that for Jesus,

  881. in this prayer,

  882. there's one line about

  883. give us this day

  884. our daily bread.

  885. And then He goes on.

  886. And the other needs

  887. that He asks for

  888. are actually more

  889. spiritually oriented.

  890. Forgive us our sins

  891. as we forgive others.

  892. And deliver us from temptation.

  893. Right?

  894. Lead us not in temptation,

  895. but deliver us from evil.

  896. Keep our spiritual lives

  897. from being destroyed

  898. by sin,

  899. by Satan.

  900. Lord, help us

  901. to remember

  902. and to live in

  903. the grace in which

  904. we now stand in Jesus

  905. that is the grace

  906. of Your forgiveness

  907. of our sin.

  908. I want to say something

  909. really briefly

  910. about verses 14 and 15.

  911. And again,

  912. we'll come back to this

  913. probably much more in depth.

  914. But I don't believe

  915. Jesus is making

  916. our forgiveness

  917. from God

  918. conditional.

  919. That would seem

  920. to be contrary

  921. to say Ephesians 1.7

  922. where it says

  923. the forgiveness of sins

  924. is a gift of grace,

  925. not because we have

  926. deserved it

  927. or done anything

  928. to earn it.

  929. But I think instead,

  930. maybe Ephesians 4.32

  931. is a key,

  932. that we are to forgive

  933. as the Lord

  934. has forgiven us.

  935. Jesus is calling us

  936. to remember

  937. our salvation

  938. and the forgiveness

  939. that God has given us

  940. and then to be forgiving

  941. towards others

  942. because that is true.

  943. And there is a warning

  944. in there,

  945. which is,

  946. if we aren't forgiving

  947. of other people,

  948. do we really know

  949. God's forgiveness?

  950. But it's not a condition.

  951. God only forgives me

  952. as much as

  953. I forgive others.

  954. Jesus ends His teaching here

  955. saying,

  956. this is the most important thing.

  957. This is the central.

  958. This is the core, right?

  959. It's bringing us back

  960. to the gospel again.

  961. Do you see how

  962. prayer flows

  963. from the gospel?

  964. Because in the gospel,

  965. what do we confess?

  966. That a grace-filled God

  967. in love

  968. has initiated

  969. towards us

  970. with a plan

  971. of salvation.

  972. He sent

  973. Jesus His Son

  974. to rescue us

  975. when we were lost

  976. in sin,

  977. far from Him,

  978. enemies of Him,

  979. rejecting Him

  980. in our foolish pride

  981. that thinks

  982. we can control God,

  983. in our foolish plans

  984. of self-delivering

  985. that by success

  986. or by doing

  987. the right things

  988. we might actually

  989. be acceptable to Him.

  990. We had rejected God

  991. in all of these things,

  992. but God initiated

  993. towards us

  994. to say,

  995. no,

  996. that is not the way,

  997. but I am sending

  998. you the way.

  999. Jesus has come

  1000. to save us

  1001. from our sin

  1002. in grace,

  1003. giving us

  1004. what we don't deserve,

  1005. the forgiveness

  1006. of our sin

  1007. through Jesus' death

  1008. for us,

  1009. the renewal

  1010. of our personal

  1011. relationship

  1012. with God our Father

  1013. so that we can

  1014. enter into Him,

  1015. a high priest,

  1016. Jesus,

  1017. who now sits

  1018. in the heavenly realms

  1019. so that when we

  1020. approach a God

  1021. of all glory

  1022. and honor

  1023. and holiness,

  1024. He doesn't cast us

  1025. away because of

  1026. our sinfulness,

  1027. but covers us

  1028. with the righteousness

  1029. of Christ

  1030. so that we can

  1031. actually approach

  1032. God the Father

  1033. through Jesus

  1034. and be received

  1035. and accepted

  1036. and heard.

  1037. The gospel tells us

  1038. that we have

  1039. a new spiritual life

  1040. where the Spirit

  1041. of God dwells

  1042. within us,

  1043. and this Spirit

  1044. will help us pray

  1045. heart-oriented prayers

  1046. to God

  1047. that are right.

  1048. This is the kingdom

  1049. that Jesus

  1050. is bringing,

  1051. a kingdom of those

  1052. who pray

  1053. to God their Father

  1054. because they know

  1055. that He

  1056. is a good

  1057. and loving Father

  1058. who delights

  1059. when they come

  1060. to Him

  1061. in need.

  1062. Let's pray.

  1063. Lord Jesus,

  1064. we thank You.

  1065. We thank You

  1066. for all that You

  1067. have done for us

1068. so that we can even

  1069. do what we're doing

  1070. right now,

  1071. coming to You

  1072. in prayer.

  1073. Lord,

  1074. we pray,

  1075. we pray that

  1076. as we meditate

  1077. on this passage

  1078. that You would

  1079. renew us,

  1080. renew us

  1081. in our understanding

  1082. of what a good

  1083. Father You,

  1084. we have

  1085. in our God.

  1086. Renew us

  1087. in our desire

  1088. to come

  1089. to Him.

  1090. Renew us,

  1091. Lord,

  1092. in our sense

  1093. of utter dependence

  1094. and in our delight

  1095. in bringing our needs.

  1096. Lord,

  1097. renew us

  1098. in our worship

  1099. of our God,

  1100. our Father,

  1101. through Jesus.

  1102. Oh, Lord,

  1103. we pray these things

  1104. in Jesus' name.

  1105. Amen.
