  1. Good morning, church.

  2. Would you turn with me to our sermon passage, Isaiah chapter 7.

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  3. That's page 535 in the Pew Bible.

  4. As Pastor Matt mentioned, leading up to Christmas,

  5. the church historically celebrates a season called Advent.

  6. Advent's a word that simply means arrival or coming.

  7. This is the time of year when we remember Jesus' first advent,

  8. his first coming in the incarnation,

  9. and we look ahead to his second advent, his second coming in glory.

  10. And this year, to do that, we're going to be looking at four passages in the book of Isaiah.

  11. And each of these passages talks about the coming of the Messiah,

  12. the coming of Christ, and the light that he has brought into our darkness.

  13. Now, one of the things that many folks do in this early part of the season is decorate for Christmas.

  14. Thanks to Kirsten and everyone else who helped to decorate the sanctuary yesterday.

  15. It looks great.

  16. But how about you?

  17. Is this the weekend that you pull out the garland and the ornaments and the wreaths?

  18. Do you put up your Christmas tree this weekend?

  19. There's something comforting and enriching, I think,

  20. about bringing out the same decorations year after year,

  21. perhaps the nativity scene,

  22. which if you made it to Sunday school this morning,

  23. you learned that St. Francis, like, invented the nativity scene.

  24. So, check that out on the podcast.

  25. He didn't invent it, but, you know, he kind of, well, whatever.

  26. You can listen to it and figure it out for yourself.

  27. So, maybe you bring out your nativity set.

  28. Maybe you bring out your ornaments.

  29. Maybe you hang the stockings.

  30. You know, these kind of traditions can give a sense of continuity and stability

  31. to what can often be a hectic and stressful time of year, can't it?

  32. But the danger, of course,

  33. is that over time,

  34. these things lose their meaning.

  35. It can just become stuff that we trudge out this time of year

  36. to try to get in the mood.

  37. But in reality, it doesn't carry much weight, right?

  38. It's just decoration.

  39. Now, I wonder if some Scripture passages

  40. become the same thing for us,

  41. especially during Advent.

  42. We've heard them before lots of times,

  43. and they become just decoration.

  44. With little traction in our everyday lives,

  45. with little relevance

  46. for our deeper fears or longings.

  47. Behold, the Virgin will conceive and bear a son,

  48. and you shall call his name Emmanuel.

  49. Is that familiar Advent verse just decoration for us?

  50. Or is it a light piercing the darkness?

  51. Well, I hope we'll find that it's the latter.

  52. Because when we look at Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  53. where that prophecy is first given,

  54. we find that it doesn't come in the midst of holiday celebrations

  55. and cookie baking and stockings over the fire.

  56. It comes in the midst of fear and turmoil.

  57. It comes to a tragic young king

  58. who's about to lose his kingdom

  59. before his reign has even begun.

  60. It comes in the middle of messy geopolitics,

  61. war-hungry empires,

  62. and petty kingdoms vying for survival.

  63. It comes to a people so afraid

  64. that they're like branches of a tree

  65. shaken in the wind.

  66. And it comes to us

  67. in our fears.

  68. When our world seems about to crumble,

  69. when we're grasping for security,

  70. for stability,

  71. when we're trying to find something reliable

  72. to save us,

  73. right there in our fears,

  74. that's where it comes.

  75. Whether they be political fears

  76. or family fears,

  77. job fears or relationship fears,

  78. childhood fears or old age fears,

  79. that's where the promise comes.

  80. So let's pick up this passage

  81. in Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7:1–14

  82. verses 1 through 14.

  83. And let's see what God has to say to us.

  84. Isaiah 7, 1 through 14,

  85. we'll have it on the screens.

  86. If you want to follow along,

  87. it's page 535 in the Pew Bible.

  88. It goes like this,

  89. In the days of Ahaz,

  90. the son of Jotham,

  91. son of Uzziah,

  92. king of Judah,

  93. Rezan, the king of Syria,

  94. and Pekah, the son of Ramaliah,

  95. the king of Israel,

  96. came up to Jerusalem

  97. to wage war against it,

  98. but could not yet mount an attack against it.

  99. When the house of David was told,

  100. Syria is in league with Ephraim,

  101. the heart of Ahaz

  102. and the heart of his people shook

  103. as the trees of the forest

  104. shake before the wind.

  105. And the Lord said to Isaiah,

  106. go out to meet Ahaz,

  107. you,

  108. and Sheer,

  109. Jashub,

  110. your son,

  111. at the end of the conduit

  112. of the upper pool

  113. on the highway

  114. to the washer's field,

  115. and say to him,

  116. be careful,

  117. be quiet,

  118. do not fear.

  119. And do not let your heart

  120. be faint

  121. because of these two

  122. smoldering stumps

  123. of firebrands

  124. at the fierce anger

  125. of Rezan

  126. and Syria

  127. and the son of Ramaliah.

  128. Because Syria

  129. with Ephraim

  130. and the son of Ramaliah

  131. has devised Ezel against you

  132. saying,

  133. let's go up against Judah

  134. and terrify it

  135. and let us conquer it

  136. for ourselves

  137. and set up the son of Tabil

  138. as king in the midst of it.

  139. Thus says the Lord God,

  140. it shall not stand

  141. and it shall not come to pass.

  142. For the head of Syria

  143. is Damascus

  144. and the head of Damascus

  145. is Rezan

  146. and within 65 years

  147. Ephraim will be shattered

  148. from being a people.

  149. And the head of Ephraim

  150. is Samaria

  151. and the head of Samaria

  152. is the son of Ramaliah.

  153. If you are not firm in faith,

  154. you will not be firm at all.

  155. Again, the Lord spoke to Ahaz,

  156. ask a sign of the Lord your God.

  157. Let it be as deep as Sheol

  158. or as high as heaven.

  159. But Ahaz said,

  160. I will not ask.

  161. I will not put the Lord

  162. to the test.

  163. And he said,

  164. hear then, O house of David,

  165. is it too little for you

  166. to weary men

  167. that you weary my God also?

  168. Therefore, the Lord himself

  169. will give you a sign.

  170. Behold,

  171. the virgin shall conceive

  172. and bear a son

  173. and shall call his name

  174. Emmanuel.

  175. All right, let's pray.

  176. Father, we have read your word.

  177. Help us now to understand

  178. what it is your spirit

  179. is saying to us through it.

  180. And let us see

  181. how this text brings us

  182. to your incarnate word,

  183. our Lord Jesus Christ,

  184. who is our only hope

  185. and security.

  186. In his name we pray.

  187. Amen.

  188. So, in verses 1-2

  189. of Isaiah 7,

  190. we see the people's fear.

  191. And then, in verses 3-14,

  192. we see two ways

  193. that God invites us

  194. to respond to our fears.

  195. Let's briefly look at the fear

  196. in verses 1-2.

  197. We're told there

  198. that the heart of Ahaz

  199. and the heart of his people

  200. shook as the trees of the forest

  201. shake before the wind.

  202. Now, the date here

  203. is most likely 735 B.C.

  204. And Ahaz has just recently

  205. come to the throne

  206. of the southern kingdom

  207. called Judah.

  208. Ahaz's father, Jothan,

  209. and his grandfather, Uzziah,

  210. were both good kings

  211. for the most part.

  212. But now, just as Ahaz

  213. takes the throne,

  214. things start falling apart.

  215. We know from the history books

  216. of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles

  217. and chapter 16 of 2 Kings

  218. and chapter 28 of 2 Chronicles

  219. that Ahaz's kingdom

  220. is getting pressured

  221. on every side.

  222. Most immediately,

  223. there are two kings,

  224. one from the northern kingdom

  225. of Israel

  226. and one from their northern neighbor,

  227. Syria.

  228. These two kings have shown up

  229. on Ahaz's doorstep

  230. to bully him

  231. into joining their alliance

  232. against the vast empire

  233. of Assyria.

  234. Assyria, at this time,

  235. was the dominant superpower

  236. and they were brutal.

  237. So these two local kings,

  238. Rezan and Pekah,

  239. they're ready to dethrone Ahaz,

  240. put a puppet ruler in his place

  241. so that they can forge

  242. a coalition against

  243. this looming threat.

  244. Now put yourself

  245. in Ahaz's shoes.

  246. Your reign is just getting started.

  247. You're probably

  248. in your early 20s,

  249. something like that Ahaz was.

  250. And you hear word

  251. that looming in the distance

  252. is a hungry empire

  253. ready to devour.

  254. And now your closest neighbors

  255. are bringing their armies

  256. against you as well.

  257. This is a crisis

  258. of huge proportions.

  259. And it doesn't seem like

  260. there's really a way out, right?

  261. Do you fight against

  262. your two northern neighbors?

  263. If you lose,

  264. they dethrone you.

  265. But what happens if you win?

  266. Most likely,

  267. you'll be so depleted militarily

  268. that you'll simply then

  269. fall to the Assyrians

  270. when they inevitably come.

  271. On the other hand,

  272. do you join their petty alliance?

  273. Again, what hope is there in that?

  274. Can their small little kingdoms

  275. really stand

  276. against the war machine

  277. that's about to come

  278. crashing down upon them all?

  279. And so the heart of Ahaz

  280. and the heart of all the people

  281. shake like trees in a storm.

  282. You know, there are two ways

  283. that you can approach

  284. the Christmas season,

  285. this season we call Advent.

  286. On the one hand,

  287. you can stuff yourself full

  288. of sentimentality and distraction.

  289. And there's plenty to be had

  290. this time of year.

  291. You can try to use nostalgia

  292. and Christmas cookies

  293. and Hallmark movies

  294. and ugly sweaters

  295. and peppermint mochas

  296. to mask or dull

  297. or ignore

  298. what's really going on

  299. inside of you.

  300. You can just try

  301. to cover it all over.

  302. But that doesn't stop

  303. the shaking, does it?

  304. Still, our hearts shake

  305. like trees in the wind.

  306. On the other hand,

  307. you can do what Christians

  308. for hundreds and hundreds

  309. of years have done.

  310. They have used

  311. the season of Advent

  312. as a time

  313. not to ignore

  314. or distract

  315. or dull themselves,

  316. but to get real

  317. with themselves

  318. and with God.

  319. To admit that we

  320. do have

  321. very real fears

  322. and insecurities.

  323. To admit that we

  324. aren't the sort of people

  325. that we long to be

  326. as we look back

  327. over the year

  328. that's gone by.

  329. To acknowledge

  330. that our hearts

  331. are shaking

  332. and maybe we don't

  333. even know why.

  334. And to ask,

  335. to ask God to come

  336. and to show us.

  337. You know,

  338. traditionally,

  339. Advent

  340. was a penitential season

  341. of the church.

  342. At its best,

  343. that meant that Advent

  344. was a time

  345. not merely

  346. to distract ourselves,

  347. but to do some

  348. serious self-examination

  349. in the Lord's presence.

  350. To ask Him

  351. to come

  352. and to do

  353. a deep work

  354. in our fearful

  355. and sinful hearts.

  356. Of course,

  357. that doesn't mean

  358. you can't enjoy

  359. the Christmas season.

  360. You should enjoy

  361. this season.

  362. Watch a Hallmark movie

  363. or two

  364. or three

  365. if that's your sort of thing.

  366. I mean,

  367. they all have the exact

  368. same plot, right?

  369. So, you know,

  370. if you like one,

  371. you sort of like them all.

  372. By all means,

  373. eat a Christmas cookie.

  374. But friend,

  375. don't miss,

  376. don't miss out

  377. on the deepest joy

  378. that there is

  379. to be found

  380. in Advent.

  381. And that joy

  382. doesn't come

  383. from ignoring

  384. our fears,

  385. but from admitting them

  386. in God's presence

  387. and then seeing

  388. how He will meet you

  389. in the midst of them.

  390. So, how does God

  391. invite us to respond

  392. here in Isaiah 7?

  393. Well, in times

  394. of great fear,

  395. God invites us

  396. to trust

  397. His sovereign

  398. word.

  399. In times of great fear,

  400. trust

  401. God's sovereign

  402. word.

  403. We see this

  404. in verses 3 through 9.

  405. Through Isaiah,

  406. God sends His word

  407. to Ahaz.

  408. Ahaz is out

  409. inspecting the water

  410. supply into the city.

  411. Why is he doing that?

  412. Well, he's preparing

  413. for invasion,

  414. you see.

  415. He's trying to figure out

  416. how he's going to

  417. get himself

  418. out of the crisis.

  419. And while Ahaz

  420. is in the middle

  421. of trying to come up

  422. with a plan

  423. to rescue himself,

  424. God's word comes.

  425. And it's a word

  426. of promise.

  427. Are you afraid,

  428. Ahaz,

  429. of these two kings

  430. knocking at your door,

  431. Rezin and Pekah?

  432. They look scary.

  433. They talk big.

  434. But let me tell you

  435. what I see.

  436. Two smoldering

  437. stumps.

  438. You think they're going

  439. to set your kingdom

  440. ablaze,

  441. but I'm telling you,

  442. Ahaz,

  443. they're already

  444. burned out.

  445. Don't be afraid

  446. of them.

  447. What they're threatening

  448. won't come to pass.

  449. Within your lifetime,

  450. God says,

  451. these two kingdoms

  452. won't even be

  453. recognizable anymore.

  454. And then God says

  455. this to Ahaz,

  456. if you're not firm

  457. in faith,

  458. you won't be firm

  459. at all.

  460. Where does real

  461. stability in the midst

  462. of crisis come from?

  463. What will calm

  464. our shaking hearts

  465. when the storms

  466. of fear blow?

  467. Does it come from

  468. having a great plan

  469. for how to respond?

  470. That can help.

  471. Does it come from

  472. knowing the right people?

  473. Sometimes.

  474. Does it come from

  475. having wealth

  476. or resources?

  477. Maybe,

  478. to some degree.

  479. But none of those

  480. things will really

  481. make you firm.

  482. They're all shaky

  483. at best.

  484. None of them

  485. will last.

  486. No,

  487. real stability

  488. comes

  489. when we hear

  490. the word

  491. of the sovereign God

  492. and trust Him.

  493. Why?

  494. Because God

  495. is God.

  496. Infinitely wise

  497. and righteous

  498. and good.

  499. God knows the end

  500. from the beginning.

  501. He put the most

  502. massive stars

  503. in place

  504. and fashioned

  505. the most

  506. intricate detail

  507. of the tiniest

  508. Adam

  509. and this powerful

  510. and good God

  511. says,

  512. hear my voice

  513. and trust me.

  514. That's where

  515. your stability

  516. must lie

  517. because then

  518. your life

  519. rests on a foundation

  520. that's not subject

  521. to the

  522. fallen whims

  523. of the world.

  524. But your life

  525. rests on the

  526. infinitely sure

  527. purposes

  528. of the sovereign

  529. God.

  530. God.

  531. in crisis

  532. God's word

  533. came to Ahaz

  534. offering him

  535. the divine

  536. perspective

  537. that he so

  538. desperately needed

  539. in that moment.

  540. A young king

  541. afraid of losing

  542. his throne,

  543. afraid of losing

  544. his life

  545. and God says

  546. they won't harm

  547. you Ahaz.

  548. Trust me.

  549. Be careful.

  550. Be quiet.

  551. Do not fear

  552. and don't let

  553. your heart

  554. be faint.

  555. What promise

  556. do you need

  557. to hear

  558. from God's

  559. word today?

  560. You might be

  561. thinking,

  562. well,

  563. look,

  564. if a prophet

  565. showed up

  566. and told me

  567. exactly what

  568. God wanted to hear,

  569. that would make

  570. it a little easier,

  571. right?

  572. But friend,

  573. consider

  574. that we have

  575. something

  576. even better

  577. than that.

  578. God has

  579. actually

  580. preserved

  581. his spoken

  582. words

  583. in his

  584. written word

  585. and the Holy

  586. Spirit

  587. speaks through

  588. the written

  589. word

  590. every time

  591. it is read

  592. in prayerful

  593. trust.

  594. Do you see

  595. then how

  596. much better

  597. of a position

  598. we are in

  599. than Ahaz?

  600. We don't have

  601. to wait for

  602. an Isaiah

  603. to show up.

  604. You can open

  605. God's written

  606. word

  607. and immerse

  608. yourself in

  609. God's sovereign

  610. promises

  611. at any time

  612. and in any

  613. place.

  614. How good

  615. God has

  616. been to us.

  617. The Apostle

  618. Peter says

  619. in his second

  620. letter,

  621. God has

  622. granted to

  623. us

  624. his precious

  625. and very

  626. great promises

  627. so that

  628. through them

  629. you may

  630. become partakers

  631. of the divine

  632. nature.

  633. You can

  634. become more

  635. and more

  636. like Christ

  637. as you hear

  638. his word.

  639. What promises

  640. do you need

  641. to hear

  642. today?

  643. Perhaps

  644. you've begun

  645. to fear

  646. that God

  647. has forgotten

  648. you,

  649. that your

  650. life is

  651. simply

  652. wending on

  653. in meaninglessness.

  654. But listen

  655. when God's

  656. word says,

  657. I know

  658. the plans

  659. I have

  660. for you,

  661. plans for

  662. welfare

  663. and not

  664. for evil,

  665. to give

  666. you a future

  667. and hope.

  668. Perhaps

  669. you're in the

  670. midst of great

  671. trial or

  672. suffering

  673. and you

  674. wonder if

  675. any good

  676. is going

  677. to come

  678. out of

  679. it.

  680. But listen

  681. when God's

  682. word says,

  683. for those

  684. who love

  685. God,

  686. all things

  687. work together

  688. for their

  689. good.

  690. For those

  691. whom God

  692. foreknew,

  693. he also

  694. predestined

  695. to be

  696. conformed

  697. to the

  698. image

  699. of his

  700. son,

  701. in order

  702. that he

  703. might be

  704. the first

  705. born among

  706. many brothers

  707. and sisters,

  708. and those

  709. whom he

  710. predestined

  711. he also

  712. called,

  713. and those

  714. whom he

  715. called

  716. he justified,

  717. and those

  718. whom he

  719. justified

  720. he glorified.

  721. All things

  722. are working

  723. for your

  724. good,

  725. sister,

  726. for your

  727. glory.

  728. Perhaps

  729. you're

  730. wrestling

  731. with an

  732. area of

  733. obedience,

  734. and to

  735. walk in

  736. the way

  737. of Christ

  738. just seems

  739. too costly.

  740. You think

  741. of the

  742. sacrifice

  743. you might

  744. need to

  745. make

  746. to follow

  747. Jesus,

  748. and it's

  749. overwhelming

  750. for you.

  751. But listen

  752. when God's

  753. word says,

  754. when Jesus

  755. says,

  756. truly I

  757. say to

  758. you,

  759. there's no

  760. one who

  761. has left

  762. house,

  763. or brothers,

  764. or sisters,

  765. or mother,

  766. or father,

  767. or children,

  768. or lands,

  769. for my

  770. sake and

  771. for the

  772. gospel,

  773. who will

  774. not receive

  775. a hundredfold

  776. now in

  777. this time,

  778. houses,

  779. and brothers,

  780. and sisters,

  781. and mothers,

  782. and children,

  783. and lands,

  784. and in the

  785. age to

  786. come,

  787. eternal

  788. life.

  789. What you

  790. may lose

  791. now is

  792. nothing

  793. compared to

  794. what you

  795. will gain

  796. when you

  797. take up

  798. your cross

  799. and follow

  800. Jesus.

  801. perhaps

  802. you're

  803. struggling

  804. under the

  805. weight

  806. of guilt.

  807. Maybe

  808. through the

  809. Holy Spirit's

  810. conviction

  811. you've begun

  812. to see

  813. your sin,

  814. how great

  815. it is,

  816. how little

  817. you fought

  818. against it,

  819. how offensive

  820. it is to

  821. the God

  822. who made

  823. you and

  824. who loves

  825. you,

  826. and you

  827. wrestle with

  828. the fear

  829. that perhaps

  830. God hasn't

  831. forgiven you,

  832. perhaps he's

  833. withheld his

  834. mercy from

  835. you.

  836. But listen

  837. when God's

  838. word says,

  839. come now,

  840. let us reason

  841. together,

  842. says the

  843. Lord,

  844. though your

  845. sins are

  846. like scarlet,

  847. they shall

  848. be as white

  849. as snow.

  850. Though they

  851. are red

  852. like crimson,

  853. they shall

  854. become like

  855. wool.

  856. Friends,

  857. Jesus'

  858. death on

  859. the cross

  860. is sufficient

  861. to pay

  862. for a

  863. hundred

  864. lifetimes

  865. of your

  866. sins,

  867. and infinitely

  868. more.

  869. There is

  870. no sin

  871. that his

  872. death

  873. has not

  874. washed

  875. away

  876. for all

  877. who simply

  878. trust in

  879. him.

  880. Though your

  881. sins are

  882. like scarlet,

  883. they shall

  884. be white

  885. as snow.

  886. With

  887. every

  888. promise

  889. of God's

  890. sovereign

  891. word,

  892. we place

  893. another

  894. rock

  895. into a

  896. foundation

  897. that no

  898. storm

  899. can topple.

  900. Our

  901. hearts may

  902. shake like

  903. trees in

  904. the storm,

  905. but hearing

  906. God's

  907. word and

  908. trusting

  909. God's

  910. word will

  911. push our

  912. roots deeper

  913. into the

  914. soil of

  915. his stability

  916. so that no

  917. wind will

  918. cause us

  919. to fall.

  920. So brothers

  921. and sisters,

  922. in times of

  923. great fear,

  924. trust God's

  925. sovereign

  926. word.

  927. But God

  928. doesn't stop

  929. there.

  930. He's warned

  931. Ahaz,

  932. if you're not

  933. firm in

  934. faith,

  935. you will

  936. not be

  937. firm at

  938. all.

  939. And

  940. knowing

  941. that our

  942. faith is

  943. so often

  944. not firm,

  945. God

  946. pursues

  947. Ahaz

  948. even

  949. further.

  950. And this

  951. is what we

  952. see in

  953. verses 10

  954. through 14.

  955. In this

  956. paragraph,

  957. we see the

  958. second way

  959. God invites

  960. us to

  961. respond to

  962. our fears.

  963. In

  964. times of

  965. great

  966. fear,

  967. we must

  968. receive

  969. God's

  970. gracious

  971. sign.

  972. In

  973. times of

  974. great fear,

  975. receive

  976. God's

  977. gracious

  978. sign.

  979. In

  980. verses 10

  981. and 11,

  982. God

  983. pursues

  984. Ahaz.

  985. He says,

  986. ask a sign

  987. of the

  988. Lord your

  989. God.

  990. Let it

  991. be as

  992. deep as

  993. Sheol or

  994. as high

  995. as heaven.

  996. What a

  997. gracious

  998. thing for

  999. God to

  1000. do.

  1001. You know,

  1002. God could

  1003. have said,

  1004. look,

  1005. Ahaz,

  1006. I told

  1007. you what's

  1008. true,

  1009. now it's

  1010. up to

  1011. you.

  1012. Believe

  1013. it or

  1014. don't.

  1015. But God

  1016. actually goes

  1017. a step

  1018. further.

  1019. He says,

  1020. let me

  1021. give you

  1022. a sign,

  1023. Ahaz.

  1024. I won't

  1025. just give

  1026. you my

  1027. promise,

  1028. though that

  1029. should be

  1030. good enough.

  1031. I'll give

  1032. you a sign,

  1033. I'll do

  1034. something in

  1035. history and

  1036. material creation

  1037. to help you

  1038. believe the

  1039. promise.

  1040. I'll give

  1041. you something

  1042. that's a

  1043. marker,

  1044. that everything

  1045. I've said

  1046. will come

  1047. true and

  1048. that you'll

  1049. know that

  1050. it was

  1051. me.

  1052. What

  1053. condescension

  1054. on God's

  1055. part to do

  1056. such a

  1057. thing?

  1058. But what

  1059. happens next

  1060. is tragic.

  1061. In verse

  1062. 12,

  1063. Ahaz

  1064. rejects

  1065. God's

  1066. gracious

  1067. offer.

  1068. Now,

  1069. at first,

  1070. it sounds

  1071. like Ahaz

  1072. is being

  1073. really

  1074. spiritual,

  1075. right?

  1076. I won't

  1077. put the

  1078. Lord to

  1079. the test.

  1080. It sounds

  1081. holy,

  1082. right?

  1083. It sounds

  1084. deferential.

  1085. But we

  1086. know from

  1087. the rest

  1088. of Isaiah

  1089. and we

  1090. know from

  1091. the history

  1092. given in

  1093. 2 Kings

  1094. and in

  1095. 2 Chronicles

  1096. that Ahaz

  1097. is not

  1098. being sincere

  1099. here.

  1100. He's already

  1101. made up his

  1102. mind how

  1103. he will

  1104. respond to

  1105. the crisis.

  1106. He's already

  1107. got a plan

  1108. of action

  1109. that doesn't

  1110. involve God.

  1111. So he

  1112. gives this

  1113. kind of

  1114. pious sounding

  1115. answer,

  1116. but in reality

  1117. he's telling

  1118. God,

  1119. no thanks,

  1120. I'm going

  1121. to do it

  1122. my way.

  1123. Friends,

  1124. beware of

  1125. using piety

  1126. to avoid

  1127. God and

  1128. to simply

  1129. go your

  1130. own way.

  1131. And what

  1132. was Ahaz's

  1133. way?

  1134. How does

  1135. this young

  1136. king see

  1137. his way

  1138. out of

  1139. the crisis?

  1140. How will

  1141. he keep

  1142. his head

  1143. on his

  1144. shoulders

  1145. and his

  1146. kingdom

  1147. under

  1148. his feet

  1149. when

  1150. everything

  1151. is going

  1152. wrong?

  1153. Well,

  1154. from a

  1155. human

  1156. point of

  1157. view,

  1158. he does

  1159. something

  1160. incredibly

  1161. clever.

  1162. Rather than

  1163. fighting these

  1164. two local

  1165. kings in

  1166. order to

  1167. keep his

  1168. independence,

  1169. and rather

  1170. than joining

  1171. them in

  1172. kind of a

  1173. petty

  1174. alliance,

  1175. he actually

  1176. outmaneuvers

  1177. them.

  1178. He makes

  1179. a pact

  1180. with none

  1181. other than

  1182. the empire

  1183. of Assyria.

  1184. he goes

  1185. to the

  1186. looming

  1187. war machine

  1188. itself,

  1189. and he

  1190. cuts a

  1191. deal.

  1192. And in

  1193. the short

  1194. term,

  1195. it works.

  1196. But in

  1197. the long

  1198. term,

  1199. it's a

  1200. disaster.

  1201. And isn't

  1202. that the

  1203. way it

  1204. always goes?

  1205. The very

  1206. things we

  1207. trust to

  1208. save us

  1209. apart from

  1210. God,

  1211. in the

  1212. end,

  1213. devour

  1214. us.

  1215. Ask

  1216. anyone

  1217. familiar

  1218. with

  1219. addiction,

  1220. and they'll

  1221. tell you.

  1222. At first,

  1223. alcohol,

  1224. or drugs,

  1225. or sex,

  1226. it begins

  1227. as a way

  1228. to kind of

  1229. cover up

  1230. the hurt,

  1231. and the

  1232. pain,

  1233. or the

  1234. shame,

  1235. or the

  1236. guilt,

  1237. and it

  1238. sort of

  1239. works at

  1240. first.

  1241. But then

  1242. you become

  1243. enslaved.

  1244. You need

  1245. more and

  1246. more,

  1247. and you

  1248. can't stop,

  1249. and it

  1250. controls

  1251. everything.

  1252. And the

  1253. hurt,

  1254. and the

  1255. pain,

  1256. and the

  1257. shame,

  1258. and the

  1259. guilt,

  1260. they don't

  1261. go away.

  1262. They just

  1263. get worse

  1264. and worse.

  1265. Now,

  1266. with alcohol,

  1267. or drugs,

  1268. or sex,

  1269. it's kind

  1270. of easy

  1271. to spot,

  1272. right?

  1273. But what

  1274. about our

  1275. more

  1276. respectable

  1277. substitute

  1278. self-rescue

  1279. attempts?

  1280. We throw

  1281. ourselves

  1282. into work.

  1283. We throw

  1284. ourselves

  1285. into

  1286. good works.

  1287. We throw

  1288. ourselves

  1289. into family.

  1290. We throw

  1291. ourselves

  1292. even into

  1293. religion.

  1294. as an

  1295. attempt to

  1296. save

  1297. ourselves,

  1298. to find

  1299. our way

  1300. through

  1301. the

  1302. crisis,

  1303. and it

  1304. backfires.

  1305. These

  1306. self-rescue

  1307. projects ask

  1308. more and

  1309. more of us.

  1310. We need to

  1311. work more

  1312. hours.

  1313. We need to

  1314. have a

  1315. more perfect

  1316. family.

  1317. We need to

  1318. be more

  1319. performative

  1320. and more

  1321. devout in

  1322. our religious

  1323. practices.

  1324. They ask

  1325. more and

  1326. more of us,

  1327. and they give

  1328. less and

  1329. less.

  1330. And our

  1331. fears remain.

  1332. they backfired

  1333. on us just

  1334. as they

  1335. backfired on

  1336. Ahaz.

  1337. If you go

  1338. on and read

  1339. the rest of

  1340. Isaiah 7

  1341. and 9,

  1342. you'll see how

  1343. they describe

  1344. that God's

  1345. saying that the

  1346. Assyrian Empire

  1347. would come and

  1348. it would topple

  1349. not just northern

  1350. Israel, not just

  1351. Damascus and

  1352. Syria, but it

  1353. would keep

  1354. coming.

  1355. And like a

  1356. swarm of

  1357. bees, like a

  1358. razor cutting

  1359. down everything

  1360. in its path,

  1361. death, the

  1362. empire would

  1363. come right to

  1364. Jerusalem's

  1365. doorstep and

  1366. leave the

  1367. kingdom in

  1368. ruins.

  1369. Ahaz made a

  1370. deal with the

  1371. devil, and in

  1372. time the devil

  1373. would come for

  1374. his due.

  1375. But even

  1376. though Ahaz had

  1377. rejected God's

  1378. gracious offer,

  1379. in his mercy,

  1380. God still gives

  1381. the sign.

  1382. verse 13,

  1383. and he said,

  1384. here then,

  1385. O house of

  1386. David, is it

  1387. too little for

  1388. you to weary

  1389. men that you

  1390. weary my God

  1391. also?

  1392. There's another

  1393. sign that Ahaz

  1394. wasn't being

  1395. sincere.

  1396. And then God

  1397. says this,

  1398. therefore the

  1399. Lord himself

  1400. will give you

  1401. a sign.

  1402. Behold, the

  1403. virgin shall

  1404. conceive and

  1405. bear a son and

  1406. shall call his

  1407. name Emmanuel.

  1408. And the passage

  1409. goes on to say,

  1410. if you keep

  1411. reading it, that

  1412. in a few short

  1413. years, by the

  1414. time that

  1415. newborn child

  1416. has grown up

  1417. enough to tell

  1418. right from wrong,

  1419. these two kings

  1420. that Ahaz is so

  1421. afraid of will

  1422. be defeated.

  1423. But because Ahaz

  1424. has rejected God

  1425. and entrusted

  1426. himself to

  1427. Assyria, this

  1428. child will also

  1429. serve as a sign

  1430. of judgment.

  1431. By the time the

  1432. child can tell

  1433. right from wrong,

  1434. the empire of

  1435. Assyria will

  1436. have toppled the

  1437. cities of Judah

  1438. and turned the

  1439. once cultivated

  1440. farmlands into

  1441. wastes and

  1442. wilderness.

  1443. And the only

  1444. thing that will

  1445. be left to eat

  1446. are the things

  1447. that they'll

  1448. have to hunt or

  1449. gather, like

  1450. honey or curds

  1451. and milk from

  1452. their couple of

  1453. goats that are

  1454. left over.

  1455. And there you

  1456. have it, Isaiah

  1457. 7.

  1458. Merry Christmas.

  1459. But is that all

  1460. that God's sign

  1461. in Isaiah 7

  1462. was meant to

  1463. convey?

1464. Was it just a sign

  1465. of hope and

  1466. judgment for

  1467. Ahaz's day?

  1468. You know, as we

  1469. read on in this

  1470. section of Isaiah,

  1471. this whole section,

  1472. which is chapter 7

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  1473. through 12, we

  1474. see that there's

  1475. more here than

  1476. initially meets

  1477. the eye.

  1478. It becomes clear

  1479. that the prophecy

  1480. of chapter 7

  1481. verse 14 has

  1482. both a provisional

  1483. fulfillment, but it

  1484. reaches out into

  1485. an ultimate

  1486. fulfillment.

  1487. In chapter 8, we

  1488. see this provisional

  1489. fulfillment.

  1490. Isaiah's own wife

  1491. gives birth to a

  1492. son.

  1493. They give him a

  1494. symbolic name.

  1495. And we're told that

  1496. by the time this

  1497. child can say,

  1498. my father or my

  1499. mother, the threat

  1500. of Damascus and

  1501. Samaria will be no

  1502. more.

  1503. But does that

  1504. exhaust the sign

  1505. of verse 14?

  1506. No.

  1507. Because the rest

  1508. of Isaiah 7

  1509. through 12 will

1510. point to us, as we

  1511. follow the same

  1512. argument along, it

1513. will point us to an

  1514. even greater child to

  1515. be born.

  1516. In chapter 9, we're

  1517. told that a child

  1518. will be born who

  1519. will have an

  1520. everlasting reign.

  1521. And then in

  1522. chapter 11, this

  1523. coming king is

  1524. shown to be full

  1525. of the Holy

  1526. Spirit, so full

  1527. of God's presence

  1528. that he'll be

  1529. perfect in justice

  1530. and perfect in

  1531. wisdom.

  1532. And through his

  1533. reign, God's

  1534. people and God's

  1535. creation even will

  1536. be restored and

  1537. healed forever.

  1538. So this provisional

  1539. fulfillment in

  1540. Isaiah's day

  1541. couldn't exhaust the

  1542. full promise that

  1543. God had given

  1544. starting in Isaiah

  1545. 7.

  1546. No, a day would

  1547. come when a virgin

  1548. would conceive and

  1549. bear a son.

  1550. And he would be

  1551. Emmanuel, God

  1552. with us.

  1553. Not merely a sign,

  1554. but a reality.

  1555. And he would be

  1556. full of justice and

  1557. wisdom.

  1558. And his kingdom

  1559. would never end.

  1560. And this promise

  1561. of Isaiah 7, 9,

  1562. and 11 would

  1563. remain with God's

  1564. people for

  1565. generations.

  1566. It would outlast

  1567. the Assyrian

  1568. empire.

  1569. It would outlast

  1570. even the kingdom

  1571. of Judah.

  1572. It would persist

  1573. through the

  1574. Babylonian exile.

  1575. And then when

  1576. Babylon falls, it

  1577. would keep going

  1578. throughout the rule

  1579. of the Persians and

  1580. right into the

  1581. middle of the Roman

  1582. occupation who

  1583. displaced the

  1584. Persians.

  1585. And when God's

  1586. people were still

  1587. under the rule of

  1588. their enemies, an

  1589. oppression that

  1590. began all the way

  1591. back in the days

  1592. of Ahaz and his

  1593. fateful decision at

  1594. the upper pool on

  1595. the highway to the

  1596. washer's field, the

  1597. downward slide that

  1598. began on that day,

  1599. that promise would

  1600. persist all the way

  1601. down hundreds of

  1602. years into the

  1603. midst of Roman

  1604. oppression.

  1605. And in the sixth

  1606. month, after

  1607. generations of

  1608. waiting, the angel

  1609. Gabriel was sent

  1610. from God to a

  1611. city of Galilee

  1612. named Nazareth, to a

  1613. virgin betrothed to a

  1614. man whose name was

  1615. Joseph of the house

  1616. of David.

  1617. And the virgin's name

  1618. was Mary.

1619. And he came to her and

  1620. said, Greetings, O

  1621. favored one, the Lord

  1622. is with you.

  1623. But she was greatly

  1624. troubled at this

  1625. saying and tried to

  1626. discern what sort of

  1627. greeting this might be.

1628. And the angel said to

  1629. her, Don't be afraid,

  1630. Mary, for you have

  1631. found favor with God.

  1632. And behold, you will

  1633. conceive in your womb

1634. and bear a son, and you

  1635. shall call his name

  1636. Jesus.

1637. He will be great and

1638. will be called the Son

  1639. of the Most High.

1640. And the Lord God will

1641. give to him the throne

1642. of his father David, and

1643. he will reign over the

  1644. house of Jacob forever,

  1645. and of his kingdom

1646. there will be no end.

1647. And Mary said to the

1648. angel, How will this be

  1649. since I am a virgin?

  1650. And the angel answered

  1651. her, The Holy Spirit

1652. will come upon you, and

1653. the power of the Most

  1654. High will overshadow you.

  1655. Therefore, the child to

1656. be born will be called

1657. holy, the Son of God.

  1658. And behold, your

  1659. relative Elizabeth in her

  1660. old age has also

  1661. conceived a son, and

1662. this is the sixth month

1663. with her who is called

  1664. barren, for nothing will

  1665. be impossible with God.

1666. And Mary said, Behold, I

1667. am the servant of the

  1668. Lord.

1669. Let it be to me according

  1670. to your word.

  1671. And the angel departed

  1672. from her.

  1673. Contrast for a moment,

  1674. Ahaz with Mary.

1675. Ahaz was in an impossible

  1676. situation from a human

  1677. perspective, wasn't he?

1678. His young reign was almost

1679. over before it began, and

  1680. rather than trust God's

1681. word, he trusted what his

  1682. own efforts could accomplish,

  1683. this military alliance with

  1684. Assyria.

  1685. But Mary, receiving an

  1686. equally impossible promise

  1687. from a human perspective,

1688. says, Behold, I am the

  1689. servant of the Lord.

1690. Let it be to me according

  1691. to your word.

  1692. For nothing will be

  1693. impossible with God.

  1694. God.

1695. And when Jesus Christ was

1696. born, the sign of Isaiah

  1697. 7 became a reality.

1698. God entered space and time

  1699. and history.

1700. God took on our human nature

1701. in its entirety, and he

  1702. fulfilled every promise that

1703. had been made for thousands

  1704. of years, including the

  1705. promise of Isaiah 7, that a

1706. virgin will conceive and bear

  1707. a son, and you'll call his

  1708. name Emmanuel, which means

  1709. God with us.

1710. But why a virgin birth?

1711. Why did God choose to enter

  1712. history in this way?

1713. Because the rescue that God

  1714. would accomplish through Jesus,

1715. the Messiah, would be his own

1716. work from beginning to end.

1717. God would become fully human

1718. through Mary, but not as a

1719. result of human work or

  1720. effort or accomplishment or

  1721. deeds.

1722. Mary's part was to hear the

  1723. promise and believe, and

1724. that's true of all of us.

1725. That's what God wanted Ahaz to

  1726. see.

1727. That Ahaz didn't need to scheme

1728. and fret and make his own

  1729. salvation.

1730. That Ahaz could trust that God

1731. would accomplish what his own

  1732. works could not.

1733. And that's why it had to be a

  1734. virgin birth, because God

1735. wanted our faith to rest on

1736. him and on him alone.

1737. It's his work from beginning to

  1738. end.

1739. And if it's his work from

1740. beginning to end, then in times

1741. of great fear, our faith has

1742. found the greatest place to

  1743. rest.

1744. Our faith has found a resting

1745. place, not in device or creed.

1746. We trust the ever-living one

1747. whose wounds shall plead for me.

1748. The one who took human nature

1749. apart from any human work also

1750. died and rose again apart from any

1751. of your works, so that now you and

1752. I can be rescued utterly apart from

  1753. our works.

1754. And that means we need no longer

  1755. fear.

1756. When our hearts shake like trees in

1757. a storm, we know that Emmanuel has

  1758. come.

  1759. God is with us.

1760. Jesus Christ has secured eternal

1761. salvation and eternal life for all

1762. who simply trust in him.

1763. Every promise is yes and amen in

  1764. him.

1765. So we can let go of our false

  1766. comforts and our self-rescue

1767. projects and cling to him

  1768. completely.

1769. And in him, in Emmanuel, find

1770. security and comfort no matter what

  1771. the storms may be.

  1772. Let's pray together.

1773. Lord Jesus, we simply pause and give

1774. you praise as the one who is the

1775. fulfillment of all God's promises.

1776. And Lord, we thank you that you are

1777. an anchor in the fiercest storms.

1778. Father, seeing how you fulfilled your

1779. promises in Jesus, we can be sure

1780. that you will likewise make good on

1781. all of your word to us.
