  1. Good morning. It's good to see you all here. We're glad you have braved the cold to join us this

  2. morning. Thank you to Chi-Sing for making sure that our sanctuary is warm. We are thankful for that. Amen.

  3. Glory seeking is something that is common in our culture today. Whether it be the desire to take

  4. your photo with a famous celebrity, whether it be a movie star or an athletic star or

  5. a politician, we love to have those photos on our walls to bask in the famousness of others.

  6. The things in our pockets are filled with TikToks and Instagrams, phones, and the desire to be an

  7. influencer is somehow now a career in our world as people are hungry for followers and to be known.

  8. I would even say that glory seeking is under our obsession in our culture with sports teams.

  9. Glory by association. We won. You sat on a couch. You didn't do anything, but we won.

  10. We like to find glory in various places because it's a fundamental human desire.

  11. It reflects the fact that we were made in the image of a glorious God

  12. and that we were made for a kind of glory. But in the fall, our search for this glory

  13. has been twisted and lost. Rather than receiving glory from God, we so often seek to manufacture

  14. glory on our own. And as we do this, there are one of two outcomes. We either succeed

  15. and in doing so find ourselves consumed with pride that we have actually gotten glory,

  16. an insecurity that knowing how easily we might lose it. Or we fail. And then we live lives of despair

  17. or of envy of those who seem to have glory in this world.

  18. Glory seeking is at the heart of humanity. And you know, it's interesting to think about the fact

  19. that the church as an institution, as a people, has not been immune to this either. There have been

  20. times when the church has been ascendant or dominant in a culture. It has felt glorious in that position,

  21. but how often has it allowed pride to rise up? And the glory has not been received from God,

  22. but built by our own efforts and by our own performances, creating the same kind of insecurities.

  23. And then there are also times where the church doesn't feel glorious at all. I think of my two years

  24. in China and how difficult it was to feel like the church, talking to my brothers and sisters there,

  25. how do we make an impact on this culture that just has no understanding and no idea,

  26. and the church seems so small and so insignificant,

  27. wondering how would we gain the kind of glory that we think we ought to have?

  28. This is not a new feeling for the people of God.

  29. When you go back to 700 B.C. and the prophet Isaiah, which is our text for this morning,

  30. you'll see that they too felt very insignificant, stuck between the great superpowers of Assyria

  31. and Egypt, assailed and manipulated by their local neighbors, Syria and Ephraim.

  32. They wondered, where is the glory of David and Solomon?

  33. And interestingly enough too, in the first century, when Jesus came to this world,

  34. the church, the people of God at that time also wondered, where is the glory of Israel?

  35. As they lived under the domination of Rome, as Israel was just a small protectorate in a huge empire,

  36. ruled by Gentile rulers.

  37. In the human desire for glory,

  38. so often God's people have felt small and insignificant.

  39. But God speaks to us.

  40. God tells us to lift up our eyes.

  41. As His people, God speaks to us and says,

  42. Look to me.

  43. Though you feel small and insignificant,

  44. there is a greater glory that is yours and will be yours for all of eternity.

  45. It will not be a glory of your own making,

  46. but it will be a glory that I will bring you into.

  47. And this is what our passage about this morning.

  48. We're in Isaiah 60.

  49. I forgot to look up the page number.

  50. Someone want to give me a page number on that?

  51. Isaiah 60.

  52. We're going to be looking at the whole chapter.

  53. What's that?

  54. 6.19.

  55. Thank you, Susie.

  56. If you're using a pew Bible,

  57. 6.19.

  58. Isaiah 60.

  59. We're going to be looking at this passage together.

  60. And just to remember,

  61. our Advent preaching series,

  62. the theme has been light in the darkness.

  63. And we've been looking through the ways that the prophet Isaiah long ago

  64. predicted the coming of Jesus

  65. and how His coming was light in the darkness.

  66. And we saw that imagery in different places.

  67. We saw it particularly in Isaiah 9.

  68. But this promise was,

  69. God sees the world in darkness,

  70. and He has not forgotten it,

  71. but He is going to act to bring light.

  72. And that light would not be a force,

  73. but a person,

  74. the person of Jesus.

  75. And so, in Isaiah 7.14,

  76. remember,

  77. we saw,

  78. a virgin will conceive and bear a son,

  79. and He will be called Emmanuel,

  80. God with us.

  81. Or if you remember,

  82. in Isaiah 9.6,

  83. verse 6,

  84. where it says,

  85. for to us a child is born,

  86. to us a son is given,

  87. and the government shall be on His shoulder,

  88. and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,

  89. Mighty God,

  90. Everlasting Father,

  91. Prince of Peace.

  92. And then last week,

  93. Pastor Nick talked about Isaiah 11.

  94. There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,

  95. and a branch from his roots

  96. shall bear fruit.

  97. And then further on,

  98. it says,

  99. in that day,

  100. the root of Jesse,

  101. who shall stand as a signal for the peoples,

  102. of him shall the nation shall acquire,

  103. and his resting place shall be glorious.

  104. So, Isaiah is preparing us for this passage.

  105. Now, Isaiah is a big book.

  106. The ESV Study Bible has this great story,

  107. or great summary that says,

  108. the whole book of Isaiah portrays God's plan for Judah

  109. as a story that is headed somewhere,

  110. namely the coming of a final heir of David

  111. who will bring light to the Gentiles.

  112. And Israel was created for this purpose,

  113. that from Israel might come this one

  114. who would bring glory to the whole world.

  115. And friends,

  116. this is what we see in Isaiah 60,

  117. a promise,

  118. a prediction

  119. that there is a greater glory for God's people

  120. that He invites us into.

  121. So, let's read together and look at it.

  122. Isaiah 60,

  123. starting in verse 1.

  124. Arise,

  125. Arise,

  126. shine,

  127. for your light has come,

  128. and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

  129. For behold,

  130. darkness shall cover the earth,

  131. and thick darkness the peoples,

  132. but the Lord will arise upon you,

  133. and His glory will be seen upon you,

  134. and nations shall come to your light,

  135. and kings to the brightness of your rising.

  136. Lift up your eyes all around and see.

  137. They all gather together.

  138. They come to you.

  139. Your sons shall come from far,

  140. and your daughters shall be carried on the hip.

  141. Then you shall see and be radiant,

  142. and your heart shall thrill and exult,

  143. because the abundance of the sea

  144. shall be turned to you.

  145. The wealth of the nations shall come to you.

  146. A multitude of camels shall cover you,

  147. the young camels of Midian and Ephah.

  148. All those from Sheba shall come.

  149. They shall bring gold and frankincense,

  150. and shall bring good news,

  151. the praises of the Lord.

  152. All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered to you.

  153. The rams of Nebaioth shall minister to you.

  154. They shall come up with acceptance on my altar,

  155. and I will beautify my beautiful house.

  156. Who are these that fly like a cloud,

  157. and like doves to their windows?

  158. For the coastland shall hope for me,

  159. the ships of Tarshish first,

  160. to bring your children from afar,

  161. their silver and gold with them.

  162. For the name of the Lord your God,

  163. and for the Holy One of Israel,

  164. because He has made you beautiful.

  165. Foreigners shall build up your walls,

  166. and their kings shall minister to you.

  167. For in my wrath I struck you,

  168. but in my favor I have had mercy on you.

  169. Your gates shall be opened continually day and night.

  170. They shall not be shut.

  171. That the people may bring to you

  172. the wealth of the nations

  173. with their kings led in procession.

  174. For the nation and kingdom

  175. that will not serve you shall perish.

  176. Those nations shall be utterly laid waste.

  177. The glory of Lebanon shall come to you,

  178. the Cyprus, the plain, and the pine,

  179. to beautify the place of my sanctuary,

  180. and I will make the place of my feet glorious.

  181. The sons of those who afflicted you

  182. shall come bending low to you,

  183. and all who despise you

  184. shall bow down at your feet.

  185. They shall call you the city of the Lord,

  186. the Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

  187. Whereas you have been forsaken and hated

  188. with no one passing through,

  189. I will make you majestic forever,

  190. a joy from age to age.

  191. You shall suck the milk of nations.

  192. You shall nourish the breasts of kings.

  193. You shall know that I, the Lord,

  194. am your Savior and your Redeemer,

  195. the Mighty One of Jacob.

  196. Instead of bronze, I will bring gold,

  197. and instead of iron, I will bring silver.

  198. Instead of wood, bronze.

  199. Instead of stones, iron.

  200. I will make your overseers peace

  201. and your taskmasters righteousness.

  202. Violence shall no more be heard in your land.

  203. Devastation or destruction within your borders.

  204. You shall call your walls salvation,

  205. and your gates praise.

  206. And the sun shall be no more,

  207. your light by day.

  208. Nor for the brightness shall the moon give you light.

  209. But the Lord will be your everlasting light,

  210. and your God will be your glory.

  211. Your sun shall no more go down,

  212. nor your moon withdraw itself.

  213. For the Lord will be your everlasting light,

  214. and your days of mourning shall be ended.

  215. Your people shall all be righteous,

  216. and they shall possess the land forever,

  217. the branch of my planting,

  218. the work of my hands,

  219. that I might be glorified.

  220. The least one shall become a clan,

  221. the smallest one a mighty nation.

  222. I am the Lord.

  223. In its time, I will hasten it.

  224. This is God's good word to us this morning.

  225. Let's pray together.

  226. Oh, Lord, we thank you for your word.

  227. And, Lord, with all the richness of imagery,

  228. we pray that we might,

  229. Lord, by your Spirit,

  230. have understanding this morning.

  231. Lord, I pray that you would help me to speak as I ought.

  232. I pray for all of us,

  233. that we would receive your word.

  234. And, Lord, that by it,

  235. you would minister to our hearts,

  236. that we would submit and obey,

  237. and know, Lord,

  238. the joy of your glory.

  239. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  240. Amen.

  241. Amen.

  242. Friends, the big idea for us this morning

  243. is that there is a greater glory for us,

  244. a greater glory in the kingdom of Jesus.

  245. And Isaiah predicts this,

  246. and he points us to it,

  247. and he helps us to see it.

  248. I've broken down our passage into three sections.

  249. Each one shows a particular aspect

  250. of the glory of what Jesus has brought for us.

  251. So, let's look at those together.

  252. The first one is a large section,

  253. verses 1 through 14.

  254. And in it, we see that there is a glory

  255. of a promised kingdom

  256. greater than the nations.

  257. In the beginning of this chapter,

  258. as you see, there is this call.

  259. Arise, shine,

  260. for your light has come,

  261. for the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

  262. And it's this call.

  263. Church, though you feel small and insignificant,

  264. look, God has not forgotten you,

  265. but He has come with glory.

  266. Remember how small Israel felt

  267. at the time of Isaiah's prophecy.

  268. Assyria had invaded the northern kingdom.

  269. Ten tribes of the twelve tribes of Israel

  270. had been conquered and scattered,

  271. never to be gathered again in the same way.

  272. They were not a major player

  273. on the sociopolitical world,

  274. but a football for nations to pass around

  275. but God says,

  276. my glory will come upon you.

  277. And when that comes,

  278. the nations of the world

  279. that seem so great right now,

  280. they will respond by coming to you.

  281. They will come in honor and worship to you.

  282. Look at some of the ways

  283. that Isaiah draws this out, right?

  284. In verse 3,

  285. the nations shall come to your light.

  286. They will come from their darkness

  287. to the people of God

  288. because there is light there.

  289. Verses 4 and verse 9

  290. will talk about the gathering of people,

  291. that there are people spread all over the world,

  292. and your sons and daughters

  293. will come from afar

  294. to be gathered in to the people of Israel.

  295. In verses 5 through 7,

  296. it's a striking picture,

  297. if you look at it,

  298. that the wealth of nations will be brought

  299. and laid at the feet

  300. of the people of God

  301. and His King

  302. and their kingdom, right?

  303. It's this,

  304. when we look around,

  305. we just think there's so much power

  306. and so much wealth

  307. and so much military might,

  308. and we think,

  309. what is the people of God?

  310. But one of the promises

  311. is that we are caught up

  312. into something that's so much greater.

  313. The nations will come

  314. and bow their knee one day to Jesus,

  315. and not only will they no longer be enemies,

  316. but they will serve you.

  317. You look at verses 10 and 11,

  318. it's saying,

  319. these nations will come

  320. and they will be building your gates.

  321. They will be contributing

  322. to the glory of the kingdom

  323. that is to come.

  324. The best of the world's riches

  325. will come and serve God and His people,

  326. the cedars of Lebanon.

  327. That's what that means.

  328. This symbol is there.

  329. This is the richest thing out there,

  330. and it's being brought

  331. to serve the kingdom of God.

  332. There's also a callback

  333. to the temple of Solomon

  334. that was built with cedars of Lebanon,

  335. and then this is saying,

  336. it's going to come back.

  337. It's going to be renewed.

  338. It's going to be restored,

  339. and even greater than that,

  340. God gives this tapestry of imagery

  341. to say that the glory of the kingdom

  342. that Jesus brings

  343. is that it will come ultimately in triumph,

  344. and it will be the center

  345. of all human existence

  346. and all of life on this earth,

  347. and the riches and the wealth

  348. of the world

  349. will be given to it to serve.

  350. And Jesus comes

  351. to bring this fulfillment,

  352. and we'll keep talking about

  353. what that looks like

  354. as we go on through this,

  355. but do you remember Matthew 2?

  356. What happens in the beginning

  357. of Matthew 2?

  358. Matthew 2,

  359. there are wise men

  360. from the east

  361. who look up and see

  362. a light that has come

  363. into the darkness of the sky,

  364. and they think,

  365. and they see it as important.

  366. And so these wise men,

  367. kings, rulers,

  368. whoever they,

  369. from lands far away,

  370. come,

  371. and they bring their richest gifts

  372. to lay at the feet of a baby,

  373. or maybe a toddler at that point.

  374. We can talk about the timeline

  375. another day.

  376. But they come

  377. and lay down their wealth

  378. before this child

  379. because a light led them to this.

  380. Don't miss the fact

  381. that Matthew's read Isaiah,

  382. and he knows where this is going.

  383. So there's this little clue,

  384. even with the,

  385. we three kings of Orient are,

  386. those ones are brought in

  387. to this partial fulfillment.

  388. And then as we see

  389. throughout the rest

  390. of the New Testament,

  391. as Jesus comes

  392. and he lives his life

  393. and his death

  394. and his resurrection,

  395. and as the church begins,

  396. right,

  397. in Acts 2,

  398. the church begins

  399. not just with the Jewish people,

  400. but with other people.

  401. There are other languages

  402. that the gospel is preached to,

  403. and people from other lands

  404. respond and begin to come.

  405. And what had been

  406. a national plan

  407. in the Old Testament

  408. that God would lift up Israel

  409. as one nation

  410. to be a light to all people

  411. so that all people could know God

  412. now becomes the church,

  413. this transnational,

  414. international being

  415. that no nation can claim

  416. as its own.

  417. But this church then becomes this

  418. reaching the ends of the earth

  419. so that God is drawing people

  420. from everywhere

  421. through the preaching

  422. of the gospel.

  423. And we know this is true

  424. because when you look

  425. at the vision in Revelation,

  426. when we see Jesus

  427. in his throne room

  428. in all of his glory,

  429. John writes this,

  430. after this I look

  431. and behold a multitude

  432. that no one could number

  433. from every nation,

  434. from all tribes

  435. and peoples

  436. and languages

  437. standing before the throne

  438. and before the Lamb

  439. clothed in white robes

  440. with palm branches

  441. in their hands

  442. and crying out

  443. with a loud voice,

  444. salvation belongs

  445. to our God

  446. who sits on the throne

  447. and to the Lamb.

  448. Friends,

  449. in light of all the glories

  450. that we might see

  451. in this world,

  452. God says there is

  453. a greater glory

  454. among the nations,

  455. a glory that reaches

  456. and draws

  457. all nations

  458. better than any nationalism,

  459. a glory that reveals

  460. a triumph greater

  461. than any political

  462. or social victory,

  463. a triumph that brings

  464. riches and wealth

  465. beyond our imagination,

  466. a glory in the fulfillment

  467. of what God is doing now

  468. in building a global church

  469. of people from every tribe

  470. and tongue and nation.

  471. And though you might

  472. feel small now,

  473. though you might feel

  474. like the culture

  475. is this big hairy beast

  476. and we can't stand

  477. among it

  478. and it feels like

  479. the darkness

  480. may be encroaching

  481. over us,

  482. God says,

  483. no,

  484. that's not the end

  485. of the story.

  486. There is a different

  487. end of the story

  488. and it's already begun.

  489. Jesus has already come

  490. as light in the darkness

  491. and right now

  492. He's doing this work

  493. and one day

  494. we will see

  495. the fullness

  496. and the fulfillment

  497. of it

  498. and its glory

  499. will be so great.

  500. Be encouraged,

  501. be strengthened,

  502. press on,

  503. arise,

  504. shine

  505. for your glory

  506. has come.

  507. Your glory will be

  508. a greater glory

  509. among the nations

  510. than you can even imagine.

  511. That's the first point.

  512. Then in verses 15 through 18,

  513. there's another kind

  514. of glory that's pictured here.

  515. This is the glory

  516. of a Redeemer

  517. in His renewed kingdom.

  518. Look with me

  519. in verses 16

  520. and following.

  521. You see this,

  522. you see it

  523. in verse 15,

  524. right?

  525. Sorry,

  526. I meant verse 15.

  527. That's where I wanted to go.

  528. Let's go to verse 15.

  529. It says,

  530. this is the great reversal

  531. that the Redeemer brings.

  532. You who were forsaken

  533. and hated

  534. with no one

  535. passing through,

  536. that means that you were

  537. off the beaten track.

  538. In fact,

  539. you were just

  540. a nobody

  541. in the wilderness.

  542. I will make you

  543. majestic forever,

  544. a joy to the age.

  545. So,

  546. God comes

  547. as a Redeemer

  548. to take people

  549. from insignificance

  550. to something

  551. much greater.

  552. And the images

  553. are forsaken

  554. and hated

  555. to majesty

  556. and joy,

  557. right?

  558. Verse 17,

  559. it's an upgrade

  560. to a greater treasure.

  561. If you look

  562. at the Hebrew parallelism,

  563. what He's really saying

  564. is wood

  565. will be turned

  566. to bronze,

  567. will be turned

  568. to gold,

  569. and stones

  570. will be turned

  571. to iron,

  572. will be turned

  573. to silver.

  574. What is common,

  575. what seems mundane

  576. and very simple

  577. and not very glorious,

  578. will be transformed

  579. into something

  580. that has all wealth

  581. and glory.

  582. It's transformed

  583. into something precious.

  584. And this is what

  585. God is doing.

  586. And when the nations

  587. that threatened them,

  588. that were their overseers

  589. and taskmasters

  590. that brought oppression

  591. and suffering

  592. and evil,

  593. they will be turned

  594. into peace

  595. and righteousness.

  596. And the walls

  597. and gates

  598. are no longer

  599. for protection,

  600. but they are places

  601. of welcome

  602. and praise.

  603. The glory of God,

  604. our Redeemer,

  605. has this theme

  606. of this great transformation

  607. from nothing

  608. to something,

  609. from things

  610. that are not good

  611. to things

  612. that are glorious.

  613. of course,

  614. this is what

  615. Jesus comes

  616. to do.

  617. He comes

  618. into darkness

  619. to bring light.

  620. He comes

  621. to those

  622. who are angry

  623. and rebellious

  624. and He brings peace.

  625. He comes

  626. to those

  627. who are wandering

  628. and wondering

  629. and lost

  630. and brings truth.

  631. He comes

  632. to those

  633. who are unloving,

  634. unlovable,

  635. I'm sorry,

  636. unlovely

  637. and feel unlovable.

  638. And He loves them.

  639. This is what we see

  640. when Jesus interacts

  641. with people

  642. throughout the Gospels.

  643. This is what we see

  644. as the calling

  645. of the church

  646. to care

  647. for the poor

  648. and the widows,

  649. for the outsiders,

  650. for the needy,

  651. for those

  652. who are

  653. on the margins

  654. of society

  655. as a special care,

  656. as a part

  657. of our loving

  658. the whole world.

  659. But of course,

  660. the greatest thing

  661. of all that Jesus

  662. does in this

  663. role of a

  664. great reversal

  665. redeemer

  666. is that He deals

  667. with our sin

  668. because all of us

  669. in our sin

  670. have a great need

  671. for a redeemer.

  672. and Jesus

  673. comes

  674. as the light

  675. of the world

  676. to do this

  677. great exchange

  678. for us.

  679. He

  680. takes

  681. our sin

  682. upon Himself

  683. as He goes

  684. to the cross.

  685. He

  686. imparts

  687. to us

  688. through faith

  689. in Him

  690. a righteousness

  691. that is not

  692. our own

  693. that allows us

  694. to stand

  695. before a holy God

  696. and know

  697. acceptance

  698. and embrace

  699. and love.

  700. His death

  701. for us

  702. as He went

  703. to the cross

  704. brings life

  705. to all

  706. who are in Him.

  707. He was despised

  708. and rejected

  709. so that we could

  710. be loved

  711. and embraced.

  712. He went

  713. into the darkness

  714. of death

  715. so that we could

  716. know Him

  717. to be the light

  718. of life.

  719. friends,

  720. I do want

  721. to say

  722. this morning

  723. there is one hint

  724. in this grand

  725. picture of glory

  726. in this chapter

  727. there is one hint

  728. of warning in it.

  729. Verse 12

  730. look with me

  731. at it

  732. for the nation

  733. and the kingdom

  734. that will not

  735. serve you

  736. shall perish

  737. and the nation

  738. shall be utterly

  739. laid

  740. to waste.

  741. friends,

  742. our rejection

  743. and our rebellion

  744. against God

  745. will exclude us

  746. from this glory

  747. that this chapter

  748. portrays.

  749. It tells us

  750. that not all

  751. will receive

  752. not all

  753. will come

  754. not all

  755. will bow down

  756. before Him

  757. but God

  758. will not share

  759. His glory

  760. and for those

  761. who say

  762. no thanks God

  763. I want to do

  764. this on my own

  765. I'll take my own

  766. glory over yours

  767. He will say

  768. you can have

  769. the glory

  770. that you

  771. choose

  772. but you will

  773. find it to be

  774. empty

  775. you will find

  776. it to be

  777. vacuous

  778. you will find

  779. it to be

  780. unstable

  781. and ultimately

  782. you will find

  783. yourself

  784. excluded

  785. cut off

  786. from this

  787. glorious kingdom

  788. and so there is

  789. in this great

  790. reversal

  791. and invitation

  792. and a call

  793. come to

  794. Jesus

  795. come and find

  796. in Him

  797. the forgiveness

  798. of sin

  799. and eternal life

  800. come and believe

  801. in Him

  802. so that this

  803. greater glory

  804. that He holds

  805. out

  806. this is what

  807. He wants to do

  808. for you

  809. to bring you

  810. from darkness

  811. to light

  812. to bring you

  813. from insignificance

  814. to glory

  815. this is the

  816. good news

  817. of the gospel

  818. Apostle Paul

  819. writes in 2nd

  820. Corinthians 4

  821. 6

  822. says for God

  823. who said

  824. let light

  825. shine out

  826. of darkness

  827. has shown

  828. in our hearts

  829. to give

  830. the light

  831. of the knowledge

  832. of the glory

  833. of God

  834. in the face

  835. of Christ

  836. and this is

  837. His invitation

  838. for us

  839. to remember

  840. that

  841. so the second

  842. glory

  843. if the first

  844. glory is the

  845. glory of the

  846. kingdom among

  847. the nations

  848. the second one

  849. is the glory

  850. of this redemption

  851. that brings a

  852. great reversal

  853. that turns

  854. things

  855. to

  856. unimaginable

  857. glory

  858. and invites us

  859. to know

  860. that that's

  861. what we

  862. get to be

  863. a part of

  864. that's what

  865. He has

  866. invited us

  867. into

  868. the final

  869. verses in

  870. this chapter

  871. seem to

  872. almost fly

  873. off the pages

  874. of reality

  875. don't they

  876. there is a

  877. final

  878. picture of

  879. glory here

  880. a glory

  881. of the

  882. presence

  883. of God

  884. that is

  885. almost

  886. unbelievable

  887. right

  888. verse 19

  889. in this

  890. day

  891. when the

  892. glory of

  893. God

  894. comes

  895. and light

  896. shines

  897. upon you

  898. it says

  899. the sun

  900. shall be

  901. no more

  902. your light

  903. by day

  904. nor for

  905. brightness

  906. shall the

  907. moon

  908. give you

  909. light

  910. but the

  911. Lord

  912. will be

  913. your

  914. everlasting

  915. light

  916. and the

  917. Lord

  918. will be

  919. your

  920. glory

  921. now I

  922. want you

  923. to stop

  924. for a minute

  925. and think

  926. about what

  927. the sun

  928. what role

  929. the sun

  930. plays

  931. in our

  932. world

  933. and in

  934. our

  935. universe

  936. it is

  937. the source

  938. of life

  939. for all

  940. of creation

  941. that's why

  942. God started

  943. let there

  944. be light

  945. and he

  946. put light

  947. into the

  948. world

  949. because it

  950. is the

  951. source

  952. of life

  953. without it

  954. what do

  955. we not

  956. have

  957. we have

  958. no heat

  959. rumor

  960. has it

  961. that space

  962. is really

  963. really cold

  964. and when

  965. you don't

  966. have a

  967. sun

  968. to warm

  969. yourself

  970. you will

  971. die

  972. right

  973. we have

  974. no

  975. photosynthesis

  976. this is

  977. kind of

  978. exciting

  979. to think

  980. about

  981. your

  982. plants

  983. will

  984. all

  985. die

  986. if

  987. there

  988. is

  989. no

  990. sun

  991. if

  992. there

  993. is

  994. no

  995. sun

  996. it

  997. also

  998. destroys

  999. human

  1000. life

  1001. you know

  1002. in

  1003. Antarctica

  1004. right

  1005. people

  1006. who

  1007. go

  1008. and live

  1009. in the

  1010. research

  1011. stations

  1012. they

  1013. have

  1014. what

  1015. four

  1016. months

  1017. a year

  1018. of

  1019. no

  1020. sun

  1021. because

  1022. the sun

  1023. is tilted

  1024. the world

  1025. is tilted

  1026. away

  1027. so they

  1028. had

  1029. so

  1030. they've

  1031. had

  1032. to

  1033. they've

  1034. realized

  1035. that

  1036. a lack

  1037. of sunlight

  1038. is really

  1039. damaging

  1040. to people

  1041. it causes

  1042. depression

  1043. it causes

  1044. weight gain

  1045. it causes

  1046. lack of

  1047. appetite

  1048. in fact

  1049. there's even

  1050. a study

  1051. that showed

  1052. that children

  1053. who grew

  1054. up with

  1055. a lack

  1056. of sunlight

  1057. tended

  1058. to develop

  1059. myopia

  1060. their eyesight

  1061. was actually

  1062. affected

  1063. by lack

  1064. of

  1065. normal

  1066. exposure

  1067. to

  1068. so

  1069. we were

  1070. meant

  1071. to live

  1072. with

  1073. the sun

  1074. and without

  1075. it

  1076. we are

  1077. in

  1078. big

  1079. trouble

  1080. so

  1081. in

  1082. Antarctica

  1083. they take

  1084. extreme

  1085. measures

  1086. to try

  1087. to

  1088. recreate

  1089. what

  1090. the sun

  1091. does

  1092. whether

  1093. it be

  1094. by

  1095. sun

  1096. lamps

  1097. or

  1098. keeping

  1099. the

  1100. stations

  1101. warm

  1102. or

  1103. they

  1104. even

  1105. recreate

  1106. the

  1107. schedule

  1108. of a

  1109. day

  1110. and

  1111. night

  1112. with

  1113. sleep

  1114. and rest

  1115. and food

  1116. and

  1117. time

  1118. together

  1119. as human

  1120. beings

  1121. that

  1122. are normally

  1123. regulated

  1124. by the

  1125. rising

  1126. and setting

  1127. of the

  1128. sun

  1129. they

  1130. replace

  1131. these

  1132. things

  1133. artificially

  1134. because

  1135. they

  1136. realize

  1137. how

  1138. important

  1139. it

  1140. is

  1141. and

  1142. isn't

  1143. it

  1144. amazing

  1145. that

  1146. our

  1147. creation

  1148. points

  1149. to

  1150. our

  1151. creator

  1152. our

  1153. redeemer

  1154. and our

  1155. God

  1156. because

  1157. the

  1158. Lord

  1159. will be

  1160. our

  1161. everlasting

  1162. light

  1163. and

  1164. he

  1165. will

  1166. be

  1167. our

  1168. glory

  1169. there

  1170. will

  1171. be

  1172. no

  1173. more

  1174. death

  1175. there

  1176. will

  1177. be

  1178. no

  1179. more

  1180. mourning

  1181. because

  1182. the

  1183. life

  1184. that

  1185. comes

  1186. from

  1187. the

  1188. light

  1189. of

  1190. God

  1191. will

  1192. rule

  1193. over

  1194. there

  1195. won't

  1196. be

  1197. day

  1198. or

  1199. night

  1200. anymore

  1201. there

  1202. will

  1203. be

  1204. only

  1205. day

  1206. because

  1207. we

  1208. will

  1209. be

  1210. in

  1211. the

  1212. presence

  1213. of

  1214. God

  1215. God

  1216. and

  1217. friends

  1218. what did

  1219. Jesus

  1220. say

  1221. about

  1222. himself

  1223. when

  1224. he

  1225. came

  1226. he

  1227. said

  1228. I

  1229. am

  1230. the

  1231. light

  1232. of

  1233. the

  1234. world

  1235. whoever

  1236. follows

  1237. me

  1238. shall

  1239. not

  1240. walk

  1241. in

  1242. darkness

  1243. but

  1244. shall

  1245. have

  1246. the

  1247. light

  1248. of

  1249. life

  1250. this

  1251. is

  1252. the

  1253. beginning

  1254. of

  1255. the

  1256. fulfillment

  1257. of

  1258. this

  1259. promise

  1260. because

  1261. when

  1262. Jesus

  1263. came

  1264. what

  1265. we

  1266. celebrate

  1267. at

  1268. Christmas

  1269. is

  1270. the

  1271. coming

  1272. of

  1273. this

  1274. light

  1275. into

  1276. the

  1277. world

  1278. to

  1279. be

  1280. the

  1281. light

  1282. of

  1283. life

  1284. and

  1285. he

  1286. then

  1287. calls

  1288. his

  1289. church

  1290. and

  1291. we

  1292. saw

  1293. this

  1294. in

  1295. the

  1296. sermon

  1297. on

  1298. the

  1299. mountain

  1300. as

  1301. we

  1302. preached

  1303. through

  1304. it

  1305. in

  1306. the

  1307. fall

  1308. he

  1309. then

  1310. calls

  1311. his

  1312. church

  1313. and

  1314. he

  1315. says

  1316. you

  1317. are

  1318. the

  1319. light

  1320. of

  1321. the

  1322. world

  1323. why

  1324. Jesus

  1325. is

  1326. the

  1327. light

  1328. of

  1329. the

  1330. world

  1331. he

  1332. then

  1333. calls

  1334. his

  1335. people

  1336. to

  1337. be

  1338. a

  1339. reflection

  1340. of

  1341. that

  1342. light

  1343. we're

  1344. not

  1345. the

  1346. same

  1347. kind

  1348. of

  1349. light

  1350. that

  1351. he

  1352. is

  1353. but

  1354. we're

  1355. meant

  1356. to

  1357. reflect

  1358. his

  1359. light

  1360. to

  1361. the

  1362. world

  1363. so

  1364. that

  1365. others

  1366. might

  1367. know

  1368. and

  1369. there

  1370. is

  1371. in

  1372. this

  1373. age

  1374. this

  1375. growing

  1376. spreading

  1377. of

  1378. the

  1379. light

  1380. and

  1381. I

  1382. know

  1383. that

  1384. some

  1385. of

  1386. you

  1387. have

  1388. experienced

  1389. this

  1390. we're

  1391. in

  1392. the

  1393. darkness

  1394. of

  1395. despair

  1396. and

  1397. loss

  1398. of

  1399. wondering

  1400. where am

  1401. I

  1402. going

  1403. Jesus

  1404. has

  1405. stepped

  1406. into

  1407. your

  1408. life

  1409. and

  1410. been

  1411. light

  1412. that

  1413. has

  1414. brought

  1415. life

  1416. to

  1417. you

  1418. and

  1419. we

  1420. get

  1421. caught

  1422. up

  1423. in

  1424. this

  1425. now

  1426. and

  1427. Isaiah

  1428. says

  1429. and

  1430. that's

  1431. just

  1432. a

  1433. foretaste

  1434. this

  1435. is

  1436. just

  1437. the

  1438. beginning

  1439. because

  1440. one

  1441. day

  1442. it

  1443. will

  1444. the

  1445. world

  1446. will

  1447. be

  1448. remade

  1449. one

  1450. day

  1451. all

  1452. will

  1453. be

  1454. made

  1455. new

  1456. and

  1457. there

  1458. will

  1459. be

  1460. no

  1461. more

  1462. sun

  1463. or

  1464. moon

  1465. listen

  1466. now

  1467. to

  1468. the

  1469. words

  1470. in

  1471. the

  1472. book

  1473. of

  1474. revelation

  1475. as

  1476. John

  1477. portrays

  1478. this

  1479. picture

  1480. of

  1481. the

  1482. future

  1483. new

  1484. heavens

  1485. and

  1486. new

  1487. earth

  1488. he

  1489. says

  1490. and

  1491. I

  1492. saw

  1493. no

  1494. temple

  1495. in

  1496. the

  1497. city

  1498. for

  1499. the

  1500. temple

  1501. is

  1502. the

  1503. Lord

  1504. God

  1505. Almighty

  1506. and

  1507. the

  1508. Lamb

  1509. and

  1510. the

  1511. city

  1512. has

  1513. no

  1514. need

  1515. of

  1516. sun

  1517. or

  1518. moon

  1519. to

  1520. shine

  1521. on

  1522. it

  1523. for

  1524. the

  1525. glory

  1526. of

  1527. God

  1528. gives

  1529. it

  1530. light

  1531. and

  1532. its

  1533. lamp

  1534. is

  1535. the

  1536. Lamb

  1537. by

  1538. its

  1539. light

  1540. will

  1541. the

  1542. nations

  1543. walk

  1544. and

  1545. the

  1546. kings

  1547. of

  1548. the

  1549. earth

  1550. will

  1551. bring

  1552. their

  1553. glory

  1554. into

  1555. it

  1556. and

  1557. its

  1558. gates

  1559. will

  1560. never

  1561. be

  1562. shut

  1563. by

  1564. day

  1565. and

  1566. there

  1567. will

  1568. be

  1569. no

  1570. night

  1571. there

  1572. they

  1573. will

  1574. bring

  1575. into

  1576. it

  1577. the

  1578. glory

  1579. and

  1580. the

  1581. honor

  1582. of

  1583. the

  1584. nations

  1585. friends

  1586. this

  1587. is

  1588. where

  1589. we're

  1590. headed

  1591. an

  1592. unbelievable

  1593. kingdom

  1594. where

  1595. God

  1596. himself

  1597. dwells

  1598. in

  1599. our

  1600. midst

  1601. in

  1602. a

  1603. tangible

  1604. physical

  1605. way

  1606. Jesus

  1607. is

  1608. the

  1609. foretaste

  1610. of

  1611. that

  1612. in

  1613. his

  1614. incarnation

  1615. but

  1616. one

  1617. day

  1618. we

  1619. will

  1620. see

  1621. him

  1622. fully

  1623. and

  1624. truly

  1625. as

  1626. he

  1627. is

  1628. friends

  1629. this

  1630. is

  1631. the

  1632. glory

  1633. that

  1634. God

  1635. has

  1636. for

  1637. his

  1638. people

  1639. it

  1640. is

  1641. not

  1642. a

  1643. glory

  1644. that

  1645. we

  1646. have

  1647. ever

  1648. earned

  1649. it

  1650. is

  1651. not

  1652. a

  1653. glory

  1654. that

  1655. we

  1656. can

  1657. achieve

  1658. it

  1659. is

  1660. not

  1661. a

  1662. glory

  1663. that

  1664. we

  1665. can

  1666. manufacture

  1667. but

  1668. it

  1669. is

  1670. a

  1671. glory

  1672. that

  1673. God

  1674. bestows

  1675. upon

  1676. us

  1677. that

  1678. God

  1679. calls

  1680. us

  1681. to

  1682. receive

  1683. and

  1684. to

  1685. reflect

  1686. in

  1687. ways

  1688. that

  1689. reflect

  1690. him

  1691. in

  1692. every

  1693. way

  1694. and

  1695. how

  1696. are

  1697. we

  1698. to

  1699. respond

  1700. to

  1701. this

  1702. invitation

  1703. to

  1704. the

  1705. light

  1706. who

  1707. is

  1708. the

  1709. glory

  1710. of

  1711. God

  1712. well

  1713. let

  1714. me

  1715. close

  1716. by

  1717. reading

  1718. from

  1719. the

  1720. prologue

  1721. in

  1722. the

  1723. gospel

  1724. of

  1725. John

  1726. says

  1727. the

  1728. true

  1729. light

  1730. which

  1731. gives

  1732. light

  1733. to

  1734. everyone

  1735. was

  1736. coming

  1737. into

  1738. the

  1739. world

  1740. he

  1741. was

  1742. in

  1743. the

  1744. world

  1745. and

  1746. the

  1747. world

  1748. was

  1749. made

  1750. through

  1751. him

  1752. yet

  1753. the

  1754. world

  1755. did

  1756. not

  1757. know

  1758. him

  1759. he

  1760. came

  1761. to

  1762. his

  1763. own

  1764. and

  1765. his

  1766. own

  1767. people

  1768. did

  1769. not

  1770. receive

  1771. him

  1772. but

  1773. to

  1774. all

  1775. who

  1776. did

  1777. receive

  1778. him

  1779. who

  1780. believed

  1781. in

  1782. his

  1783. name

  1784. he

  1785. gave

  1786. the

  1787. right

  1788. to

  1789. become

  1790. children

  1791. of

  1792. God

  1793. who

  1794. were

  1795. born

  1796. not

  1797. of

  1798. the

  1799. blood

  1800. nor

  1801. of

  1802. the

  1803. will

  1804. of

  1805. flesh

  1806. nor

  1807. of

  1808. the

  1809. will

  1810. of

  1811. man

  1812. but

  1813. of

  1814. God

  1815. and

  1816. the

  1817. word

  1818. became

  1819. flesh

  1820. and

  1821. dwelt

  1822. among

  1823. us

  1824. and

  1825. we

  1826. have

  1827. seen

  1828. his

  1829. glory

  1830. glory

  1831. as

  1832. of

  1833. the

  1834. only

  1835. son

  1836. from

  1837. the

  1838. father

  1839. full

  1840. of

  1841. grace

  1842. and

  1843. truth

  1844. let's

  1845. pray

  1846. together

  1847. Lord

  1848. we

  1849. thank

  1850. you

  1851. this

  1852. morning

  1853. for

  1854. your

  1855. word

  1856. Lord

  1857. encourage

  1858. our

  1859. hearts

  1860. humble

  1861. us

  1862. before

  1863. the

  1864. awesome

  1865. vision

  1866. of

  1867. your

  1868. glory

  1869. Lord

  1870. refine

  1871. our

  1872. hearts

  1873. show

  1874. us

  1875. where

  1876. we

  1877. may

  1878. be

  1879. seeking

  1880. lesser

  1881. glories

  1882. rather

  1883. than

  1884. knowing

  1885. the

  1886. greater

  1887. glory

  1888. that

  1889. you

  1890. hold

  1891. forth

  1892. for

  1893. us

  1894. and

  1895. invite

  1896. us

  1897. into

  1898. you

  1899. thank

  1900. you

  1901. Lord

  1902. we

  1903. pray

  1904. in

  1905. Jesus

  1906. name

  1907. amen
