  1. I think that clock's fast, but I'm slow.

  2. Welcome, friends.

  3. Our topic this morning is the fountain pulse of witness bearing.

  4. There's a bit of an outline there for you.

  5. The late and beloved Tim Keller, in his final public written words

  6. addressed to the state of the evangelical church in America.

  7. Where are we? How did we get here? And where do we go from here?

  8. And among his seminal points, for me, most vivid and arresting

  9. was his diagnosis of a troubling malady.

  10. A malady which alarmingly touches us at one of our vital organs as a people of God.

  11. The gravity of Tim's assessment was this.

  12. We are sickest where we need to be most healthy.

  13. Well, what was this vital organ so afflicted?

  14. In Tim's mind, it was our ability graciously to engage

  15. unbelievers around us with the gospel.

  16. Well, I've become persuaded that Tim's diagnosis is on the mark.

  17. And if it's so, what more burning topic to take up than this?

  18. So with this sense of supreme saliency, let's take it up together, team.

  19. So how do we hope to do so in these next four weeks,

  20. should you come along for the journey?

  21. Well, here's a map of where we're headed.

  22. Today, we'll begin by asking,

  23. how does witness bearing fit into our Christian life?

  24. What place does it have?

  25. And what calls it forth and sustains it?

  26. Our witness, that is.

  27. Next, we'll ask the fundamental question.

  28. So in the next session, Lord willing,

  29. what is the message we bear?

  30. And there we'll explore what we mean by calling the gospel good news.

  31. What is the significance of it being news?

  32. And what's so good about it anyway?

  33. Then on the third session,

  34. we'll identify some of the common barriers and obstacles to our witness bearing

  35. and explore how we might overcome them.

  36. And then with resolute determination,

  37. my wife Anita always helps me on this.

  38. We want to be really practical.

  39. And we will follow up with a kind of a top 10 helps for sharing our faith.

  40. And finally conclude with some suggestions as the first steps as to how to get started.

  41. So that's our excursion prospectus.

  42. So let's begin our tour by turning to our divine guide

  43. and beseech his traveling mercies.

  44. Father, we do crave your blessing presence with us in this endeavor as we're together.

  45. Spirit, take these things of Christ and give them to us,

  46. just as Christ promised you would do,

  47. that we might both will and do your good pleasure.

  48. And we want you, Christ, to be exalted in our lives together as your people of God,

  49. such that when Christ is exalted, you have said you will call many to yourself.

  50. So do it, Lord.

  51. We ask for your glory.

  52. In Jesus' name.

  53. Amen.

  54. Amen.

  55. All right.

  56. So let's turn to the question,

  57. how does witness bearing fit in to our Christian life?

  58. What are its fountainheads and its energies?

  59. And I want to propose five fueling dynamics of our witness bearing.

  60. And here they are.

  61. It flows from the commission of our King.

  62. It reflects an attunement to the great drama.

  63. It's impelled by love of neighbor.

  64. It's central to our praise of the Savior.

  65. And it arises out of a spirit.

  66. And it arises out of a spurring of the Spirit.

  67. So first, the commission of our King.

  68. Our witness.

  69. Well, what commission is that?

  70. Well, it's been called the Great Commission.

  71. And it's recorded by each of the gospel writers.

  72. Every single one of them.

  73. The Matthew account is probably most familiar.

  74. Where Matthew writes, recording Jesus' saying,

  75. All authority on heaven and earth has been given to me.

  76. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,

  77. baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

  78. and teaching them to observe all the things that I have commanded you.

  79. And behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

  80. Matthew 28, 18.

  81. Go.

  82. Actually, it might be better rendered going or as you go.

  83. And that's to say, as we go about, wherever it is that it takes us,

  84. always and everywhere, let gospel witness accompany our goings.

  85. And we quickly get the impression that it's far deeper than a task.

  86. As great as the task is, it might even be regarded in some sense as an identity.

  87. Think of yourselves as ambassadors.

  88. The term is Paul's from 2 Corinthians 5.

  89. You are always and everywhere representing me to the world.

  90. Ever being my embassy, calling a world to be reconciled.

  91. I can pull back.

  92. We can put some chairs up in front if we need to.

  93. That's fine.

  94. My commission is that you be the one through whom I make my appeal to a lost and a dying world.

  95. As it says in 2 Corinthians 5, where we drew that term ambassador.

  96. 2 Corinthians 5, 18 through 20.

  97. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

  98. That is, in Christ, God is reconciling the world to himself.

  99. And he is making his appeal through us.

  100. Therefore, we are ambassadors.

  101. We implore on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

  102. Now, some have suggested, yeah, yeah, that's only the apostle.

  103. That's what he was supposed to do.

  104. He's really only talking about himself.

  105. You know, the we and the us, that's the royal we and the royal us.

  106. That's what's going on there.

  107. But this is a grievous mistake because it's impossible.

  108. As clearly, this is God's plan for reconciling not a little portion of the Mediterranean around the first century,

  109. which Paul might have managed to do on himself, you know, because as remarkable as a fellow he is.

  110. No, no, but this is God's strategy for reconciling what?

  111. Non-rhetorical.

  112. The whole world, yeah.

  113. The whole world.

  114. The whole world.

  115. So, you know, that's something that it's going to take a whole village, the whole people of God to pull off, not just one apostle.

  116. So, it's going to involve more than that, as impressive as Paul is.

  117. And as to verse 20, I don't know, people don't, well, if you have your Bible open, verse 20, and you happen to have a pencil,

  118. cross out the U, cross out the U, cross out the U in verse 20.

  119. It's not there in the Greek.

  120. You see, Paul is not making an appeal to the Corinthians.

  121. Be reconciled.

  122. You know, I beseech you, you should be reconciled to Christ.

  123. No, they already were reconciled.

  124. They were believers.

  125. What he is doing is explaining what we, as reconciled believers, do.

  126. We all implore, be reconciled to Christ.

  127. He's just given us our job description.

  128. So, our witness bearing flows from our marching orders.

  129. We are under the King's commission.

  130. With all authority on heaven and earth, he sends us on this errand.

  131. He appoints us as ambassadors.

  132. And this is quite an authorization.

  133. Now, think of Christ's words to us as his disciples for a moment as an authorization.

  134. An authorization.

  135. An authorization.

  136. All authority is given to me.

  137. And it's wonderful to know of your authorization.

  138. When you feel your presence or activity may be exposed to some challenge.

  139. What are you doing here?

  140. You've no right.

  141. This is not called for.

  142. This is unwanted.

  143. This is an offense.

  144. I remember when I was a graduate student in Cambridge.

  145. The colleges would have a number of gardens.

  146. Lovely gardens.

  147. But they were stratified.

  148. And you could only use certain ones if you had certain authorization.

  149. Each required its own authorization to set foot in.

  150. And whenever I'd go into certain gardens.

  151. Say that might have been gardens of another one of the colleges.

  152. There was always this low-grade anxiety.

  153. That somehow my authorization would be challenged.

  154. There was a palpable difference in my cadence when I was in my own college garden.

  155. Knowing my indisputable authorization to be there.

  156. So brothers and sisters, if ever there were an indisputable and all-conquering authorization,

  157. surely it is this one given to us by the King of Kings and the Heir of all things.

  158. So may that put a confidence in our step wherever we go, wherever we happen to be.

  159. As the Lord said to Gideon, Judges 6.14,

  160. Go in this your strength.

  161. Have I not commanded you?

  162. Have I not sent you?

  163. So our witness flows from the commission of the King.

  164. But also our witness reflects an attunement to the great drama.

  165. You see, all of us find meaning in the story that our lives are a part of.

  166. And no human being can live without implotment.

  167. And for the Christian disciple, that governing plot is supplied by the great drama of redemption.

  168. It just pulses progressively through the whole of Scripture.

  169. And one place where the drama and its implication for our lives surfaces vividly

  170. is from the pen of the Apostle in his letter to the 1 Corinthians.

  171. Again, if you have your Bibles, take a look if you'd like.

  172. 1 Corinthians 7, 29 through 31.

  173. And the context of this instruction is Paul's answering some questions about marriage and singleness.

  174. But we won't look into those.

  175. But I want us to catch the framework as to how he answers this question.

  176. So the framework.

  177. This is what he writes.

  178. Pick it up in 29.

  179. This is what I mean, brothers and sisters.

  180. The appointed time has grown very short.

  181. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none.

  182. And those who mourn as if they were not mourning.

  183. And those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing.

  184. And those who buy as though they had no goods.

  185. And those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it.

  186. For the present form of this world is passing away.

  187. Notice that for Paul, something has happened which radically alters the way we are in the world as believers.

  188. This event absolutely conditions the way we now live.

  189. We might be married.

  190. But because of this event, we don't simply settle into our domestic routines.

  191. Yes, like others, we weep and we rejoice.

  192. But not as if those emotional highs and lows were somehow decisive.

  193. Now, our engagement with the world cannot be our engrossment with it.

  194. Why not?

  195. What is this all conditioning reality?

  196. Well, the key to understanding why not is the Apostle's phrase,

  197. The time has been shortened.

  198. Verse 29.

  199. The word for time there is not chronos, just kind of chronological duration, one moment after another.

  200. But rather the word kairos.

  201. That is the specific quality of a particular period of time.

  202. A critical moment in which much is at stake.

  203. A time of opportunity that will not last indefinitely.

  204. What is the great event that has charged time, which injects drama into this drama?

  205. And what are the great events that have become bookends that bound our time and animate it,

  206. energize it, electrify it?

  207. Well, those events are the coming of Christ and his coming again.

  208. There is cross and resurrection and with them a call for all everywhere to repent and believe

  209. and his imminent return as judge of all.

  210. That's what bounds time.

  211. And notice that the Apostle also supplies the ground for this radical living.

  212. For the present form of this world is passing away.

  213. Verse 31.

  214. What does he mean by the present form of this world?

  215. Well, not the created order itself,

  216. but rather the created order in rebellion.

  217. The world that has judged Jesus on the cross by nailing him to it.

  218. But of course, the world's judgment of Christ was its own self-judgment.

  219. The judgment of the cross means that this present world order is passing away.

  220. So, in light of this saving act of God in Jesus and his imminent return as judge,

  221. and in light of the verdict that lies over this present world,

  222. to live a life utterly absorbed in other things is to be completely out of touch with the grand drama that we live in.

  223. Out of touch with the nature of this limited critical moment

  224. and the fleeting kairos opportunity for bearing witness to the saving event of Christ

  225. and a calling of a world passing away under judgment

  226. to align itself to God's saving Messiah, Christ.

  227. So, what does it mean for us to be attuned to the grand drama?

  228. Well, it means that the chemist cannot be exclusively consumed with her experiments,

  229. nor the artist be forever absorbed with her canvases,

  230. nor the geologist with her rocks,

  231. nor the historian with manuscripts, Kevin,

  232. nor the philosopher with their puzzles,

  233. for such would be utterly out of touch

  234. with the supreme fact that we are caught up in a grand drama.

  235. And so, the Christian baker cannot simply coax out the treasure of wheat, rye, barley, and yeast,

  236. but will also herald the news that Jesus is the bread of life.

  237. Neither may the Christian electrician simply install light bulbs,

  238. though she will attempt to do them well,

  239. she will also testify to the light of the world, Christ.

  240. Nor must the Christian cobbler merely make shoes,

  241. make them well as he will.

  242. His feet must be shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.

  243. Anything less would be to be completely out of step with the drama that we inhabit.

  244. And what of our witness-bearing role in the drama?

  245. I mean, should we think of it as an insignificant role, really?

  246. Or is it a leading role in the drama?

  247. Well, let's think in terms of the unfolding drama of witness to Christ

  248. and our place in that story.

  249. Let's think of some of the protagonists together.

  250. Who are some of the great witness-bearers to Christ the Messiah?

  251. Well, there was Moses,

  252. who testified of one who would come after him

  253. and speak God's words to the people.

  254. In Deuteronomy 18, 15.

  255. There's the prophet Micah in 5.2,

  256. indicating where the Christ, the coming Christ, would be born.

  257. It was that prophecy that led the wise men to Bethlehem.

  258. The star just got him to the general region.

  259. It was actually the scriptures that lead you.

  260. Isaiah spoke of him as a suffering, sin-bearing servant, Isaiah 53.

  261. These and many other Old Testament prophets

  262. bore witness to the Christ who would come.

  263. And the final, the final Old Testament prophet,

  264. John the Baptist, Jesus identified,

  265. this is Matthew 11, verse 11,

    Matthew 11:11

  266. Jesus identified as the greatest of all the prophets.

  267. Greatest in the sense of his witness to Christ.

  268. You see, all the other former prophets

  269. had a witness that was connotative.

  270. The Christ that comes will be like this,

  271. and like this, and like this,

  272. and this will be true of him.

  273. It was all connotative.

  274. But John's witness was denitative.

  275. This is he.

  276. This is he.

  277. Compared to all of his forebearers,

  278. John's witness was the clearest,

  279. and thus the greatest.

  280. But remarkably, does anybody remember

  281. what Jesus goes on to say after that?

  282. Remember?

  283. Remember?

  284. He says,

  285. John the Baptist,

  286. the greatest of all of the prophets,

  287. but the least in the kingdom of God

  288. is greater than he.

  289. What?

  290. The least in the kingdom of God?

  291. The least of us,

  292. New Testament saints,

  293. greater than John the Baptist?

  294. In what sense?

  295. In what sense?

  296. In what sense could we be greater than John the Baptist?

  297. Well, in the same sense in which

  298. John the Baptist was greater than all the other prophets?

  299. In terms of the articulateness of his witness to Christ.

  300. And Jesus is telling us that the least of us,

  301. New Testament saints,

  302. because of where we are in the unfolding drama,

  303. and what we know about Christ in his great salvation,

  304. we can give witness to Christ more articulate than John the Baptist,

  305. and all of the preceding prophets.

  306. Oh, friends, does this not give us strong encouragement to bear our witness?

  307. May our attunement to the great drama energize us in our testimony to Christ.

  308. Let's live in that drama.

  309. Let it deep die our consciousness and shape our imaginaries.

  310. And there will be a natural and inevitable flow of witness as it does.

  311. So, attunement to the great drama, from that flows our witness.

  312. But also, our witness is impelled by our love of neighbor.

  313. Impelled by our love of neighbor.

  314. Friends, we follow a master who is full of compassion and love for the lost.

  315. Matthew records in 9.37,

  316. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them,

  317. because they were harassed and helpless,

  318. like sheep without a shepherd.

  319. And this description of spiritual destitution of the lost

  320. is cast in such vivid language.

  321. The word rendered here in our translation, harassed,

  322. originally meant flayed, mangled,

  323. and came to indicate vexed with weariness and sorrow and worry.

  324. In B.B. Warfield's classic work,

  325. The Emotional Life of Our Lord,

  326. much of the discussion of that long essay

  327. is devoted to Jesus' remarkable compassion and love for the lost.

  328. To his disciples,

  329. after the encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well,

  330. he urges,

  331. Look up, I tell you.

  332. Lift up your eyes

  333. and see that the fields are white for the harvest.

  334. John 4.35,

  335. So often I confess that I see,

  336. or I think I see,

  337. not the whiteness of readiness for harvest,

  338. rather the darkness of hardness of heart,

  339. the opposition of devotion to sin in my neighbors,

  340. rather than the oppression of the devastation of sin.

  341. You see the difference?

  342. What is my impulsive heart response to my lost neighbors?

  343. What catches my eye and holds my gaze?

  344. One of our daughters, I won't name which one,

  345. when young, would sit on our stairs,

  346. concealed there,

  347. and listen to the conversations that we would have

  348. in our living room with those who were present.

  349. And when the guests left,

  350. she'd finally come down,

  351. and then she'd go around just from memory

  352. by the different voices

  353. and characterize each speaker that she had overheard.

  354. And quite insightfully and incisively,

  355. but often very critically.

  356. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

  357. Whoa, daughter.

  358. She was very young.

  359. Whoa, daughter.

  360. What is fundamentally true

  361. about each one of our guests

  362. who are here with us tonight?

  363. They're sinners, Daddy.

  364. More fundamental.

  365. More fundamental than that.

  366. All right, Dad.

  367. They're in the image of God.

  368. Yes, daughter.

  369. Dearest daughter.

  370. Make it your practice

  371. when you encounter a son of Adam

  372. or a daughter of Eve

  373. to spend the first ten minutes

  374. discovering and delighting

  375. delighting in how they reflect the image of God.

  376. It will make your encounters

  377. much more fruitful

  378. and your life much more joyful

  379. if you do so.

  380. I'm struck by a phrase in Mark's account

  381. of Jesus' encounter with a rich young ruler.

  382. Do you remember it?

  383. Mark 10, 21, Mark says,

  384. Jesus, looking at him, loved him.

  385. He saw something lovely in him

  386. and his heart went out to him.

  387. Brothers and sisters,

  388. I fear that sometimes this is not us

  389. at our best.

  390. We have not lately been known for love

  391. when it comes to the unbelievers around us.

  392. I remember asking some of my unbelieving

  393. new friends at the gym,

  394. hey, if you could ask

  395. evangelical Christians

  396. anything you would want to ask,

  397. what would you want to ask them

  398. if you had a question for them?

  399. And one of them immediately responded,

  400. I'd ask them,

  401. why do you hate us so much?

  402. Why do you hate us so much?

  403. Isn't that sad?

  404. I recently asked a sauna full of unbelievers,

  405. hey, if you could take all of your experiences,

  406. all your encounters with Christians,

  407. kind of squeeze into a Rorschach ink blotch,

  408. and then just freely associate,

  409. what would you see?

  410. Come on, tell me, what would you see?

  411. You know, I can't even repeat it.

  412. It was so unflattering.

  413. Now, this is not everybody,

  414. and I know there are just luminous,

  415. luminous exceptions of this.

  416. Just this morning,

  417. I was praying that my widowed mother,

  418. who was running into some hard times,

  419. would find a way to church,

  420. it would be a new church,

  421. and someone would befriend her.

  422. And when I called her,

  423. she was at someone's house from the church

  424. who had invited her to lunch,

  425. and they were sitting down

  426. for a nice roast beef Sunday dinner.

  427. So, oh, people of God,

  428. you do it so well.

  429. You do it so well.

  430. But let's try to abound still more

  431. in this area.

  432. What if, instead,

  433. we were to gain the reputation

  434. for having a keen eye

  435. for the virtues of others around us,

  436. and a readiness to affirm them?

  437. What if we became known

  438. for speaking over our neighbors

  439. their love-worthy qualities,

  440. and sincerely and routinely

  441. complimenting them whenever we can?

  442. Shall we despise them

  443. for their waywardness and sinfulness?

  444. Wait, but doesn't our understanding of grace

  445. forbid looking down on any sinner?

  446. For what causes us to differ

  447. from anyone else,

  448. presses the apostle.

  449. And what do you have?

  450. What do we have

  451. that we have not received?

  452. 1 Corinthians 4.7.

  453. Or 1 Corinthians 15.

  454. Paul says,

  455. By the grace of God,

  456. I am what I am.

  457. John Newton, in his memoirs,

  458. impresses this same point

  459. with a vivid illustration.

  460. He writes this.

  461. Speaking of our relation to unbelievers,

  462. those who believe

  463. the doctrines of sovereign grace

  464. act inconsistently

  465. with their own principles

  466. when they are angry

  467. at the defects of others.

  468. A company of travelers

  469. fall into a pit.

  470. One of them gets a passerby

  471. to draw him out.

  472. Now, he would not be angry

  473. with the rest for falling in,

  474. nor because they are not yet out,

  475. as he is.

  476. He didn't pull himself out.

  477. Instead, therefore,

  478. of approaching them,

  479. he should show them pity.

  480. In the same way,

  481. Newton continues,

  482. a truly saved one

  483. will no more despise others

  484. than blind Bartimaeus,

  485. after his own eyes were opened,

  486. would take a stick

  487. and beat every blind man he met.

  488. Yeah, it's true.

  489. But, we might object,

  490. this is not Newton anymore.

  491. We might object,

  492. yeah, but these unbelievers

  493. live immoral and misdirected lives,

  494. which deserve God's judgment.

  495. Yes, God's judgment,

  496. not ours.

  497. We're not to judge outsiders.

  498. And would ourselves

  499. only deserve God's judgment

  500. as outsiders to Christ?

  501. As the apostle writes to the Corinthians,

  502. in 1 Corinthians 5, 12,

  503. for what do I have to do

  504. with judging outsiders?

  505. Is it not those inside the church

  506. whom we are to judge?

  507. God judges those outside.

  508. So, how do we engage

  509. our unbelieving neighbors?

  510. I love to generate an image

  511. from Psalm 126, verse 6.

    Psalms 126:6

  512. We go about them weeping,

  513. bearing our seed for sowing.

  514. We sow the seed of our witness,

  515. and we water that seed

  516. with our tears of compassion and love,

  517. in the hope, indeed confidence,

  518. that the powerful work

  519. of the Spirit

  520. shall one,

  521. as a result of that,

  522. we shall one day come home

  523. with shouts of joy,

  524. surrounded by the sheaves

  525. of a great harvest

  526. that the great Lord of the harvest

  527. has wrought among us.

  528. So,

  529. we,

  530. our witness flows

  531. from love of our neighbor.

  532. our witness is also

  533. a central aspect,

  534. four,

  535. of our praise

  536. of our Savior.

  537. Our praise of our Savior.

  538. As Peter wrote,

  539. mightily encouraging

  540. the exiled believers,

  541. you are a chosen race,

  542. a royal priesthood,

  543. a holy nation,

  544. a people for his own possession,

  545. that you may proclaim

  546. the excellencies of him

  547. who has called you out of darkness

  548. and into his marvelous light.

  549. First Peter 2.9.

  550. We are to proclaim

  551. the excellencies of him

  552. who called us out of darkness

  553. and into his marvelous light.

  554. Isn't that interesting?

  555. Why,

  556. that seems like

  557. a simultaneous

  558. description

  559. of gospel witness

  560. proclaiming him

  561. and praise

  562. his excellencies.

  563. Hard to pull him apart there.

  564. And,

  565. that's no surprise,

  566. for we rightly

  567. think

  568. of our declaration

  569. of Christ

  570. as Savior,

  571. that is,

  572. witness bearing,

  573. as a species

  574. or a family member

  575. of praise.

  576. It's praise.

  577. It exalts Christ.

  578. It holds him forth

  579. by holding him up.

  580. And,

  581. is this not

  582. the natural,

  583. one might say

  584. even irrepressible,

  585. bubbling up

  586. of testimony?

  587. And,

  588. if you feel

  589. the Lord has done

  590. great things for us

  591. and we are filled

  592. with joy,

  593. it's hard not

  594. to express that joy

  595. in praise.

  596. And,

  597. this is,

  598. this sort of

  599. natural,

  600. irrepressible,

  601. bubbling up

  602. of testimony.

  603. Why did I say that?

  604. Think of,

  605. think of

  606. having just been

  607. delivered

  608. from the bondage

  609. of Egypt

  610. through a

  611. Red Sea escape.

  612. Isn't it

  613. kind of instinctive

  614. that like Miriam,

  615. we just look around

  616. and grab the timbrel

  617. and then

  618. take up the dance

  619. and take up a song?

  620. It just,

  621. just seems natural

  622. to do this.

  623. And,

  624. witness bearing,

  625. it's the

  626. bubbling up

  627. of the

  628. fizz

  629. of wonder

  630. and joy

  631. at God's

  632. salvation.

  633. Here's how

  634. Spurgeon

  635. expressed it.

  636. When the Lord

  637. first pardoned

  638. my sin,

  639. I was so

  640. joyous,

  641. I could scarce

  642. refrain from

  643. dancing.

  644. I thought

  645. on my road

  646. home from

  647. the house

  648. where I had

  649. been set

  650. at liberty

  651. that I

  652. must tell

  653. the stones

  654. in the street

  655. the story

  656. of my

  657. deliverance.

  658. So full

  659. was my

  660. soul of

  661. joy

  662. that I

  663. wanted to

  664. tell

  665. every snowflake

  666. that was

  667. falling from

  668. heaven

  669. of the

  670. wondrous

  671. love of

  672. Jesus

  673. who had

  674. blotted

  675. out the

  676. sins

  677. of one

  678. of the

  679. chief

  680. of

  681. rebels.

  682. This is

  683. from his

  684. morning and

  685. evening

  686. February

  687. 1st.

  688. Praise

  689. and with

  690. it witness

  691. bearing

  692. is inner

  693. joy

  694. made audible.

  695. Inner

  696. joy

  697. made audible.

  698. And my

  699. aim here

  700. is not

  701. to make

  702. anyone

  703. among us

  704. feel bad

  705. if we don't

  706. have much

  707. of this,

  708. many bubbles

  709. if you will.

  710. Rather it's

  711. just to

  712. point out

  713. the bubbling

  714. spring.

  715. And some

  716. of us,

  717. I know I

  718. do often,

  719. I just go

  720. around dehydrated

  721. and I need

  722. to drink

  723. deeply

  724. from God's

  725. saving grace

  726. in my

  727. life.

  728. So let's

  729. carry around

  730. the picture

  731. of our

  732. beloved

  733. in the

  734. locket

  735. of our

  736. memories

  737. and often

  738. open it

  739. up to

  740. gaze upon

  741. him.

  742. I have

  743. someone's

  744. picture on

  745. my cell

  746. phone

  747. and when

  748. I see

  749. that picture

  750. my heart

  751. leaps

  752. and it's

  753. hard not

  754. to muse

  755. about her

  756. which puts

  757. me in a

  758. frame to

  759. want to

  760. speak about

  761. her.

  762. And when

  763. I do

  764. what comes

  765. across

  766. is that

  767. it's

  768. really easy

  769. to like

  770. her and

  771. it's hard

  772. not to

  773. love her.

  774. And in

  775. this respect

  776. praise

  777. and its

  778. family member

  779. witness

  780. bearing

  781. is not

  782. just

  783. natural

  784. but it's

  785. self-

  786. energizing

  787. and self-

  788. accentuating.

  789. It just gets

  790. richer and

  791. deeper

  792. the more

  793. we give

  794. it vent.

  795. What C.S. Lewis

  796. writes of

  797. praise is

  798. also true

  799. of witness

  800. bearing.

  801. Again,

  802. same species.

  803. It augments

  804. our delight

  805. in Christ.

  806. It helps

  807. to compound

  808. and even

  809. complete it.

  810. Lewis writes,

  811. and this is from

  812. his reflections

  813. on the Psalms,

  814. I think

  815. we delight

  816. to praise

  817. what we

  818. enjoy

  819. because the

  820. praise

  821. not merely

  822. expresses

  823. but

  824. completes

  825. the

  826. enjoyment.

  827. It is

  828. its

  829. appointed

  830. consummation.

  831. It's not

  832. out of

  833. compliment

  834. that lovers

  835. keep telling

  836. one another

  837. how beautiful

  838. they are.

  839. The delight

  840. is incomplete

  841. till it

  842. is expressed.

  843. It's

  844. frustrating

  845. to have

  846. discovered

  847. a new

  848. author,

  849. Lewis writes,

  850. and not

  851. to be able

  852. to tell

  853. anyone

  854. how good

  855. he is.

  856. To come

  857. suddenly

  858. at the

  859. turn of

  860. a road

  861. upon

  862. some

  863. mountain

  864. valley

  865. of

  866. unexpected

  867. grandeur

  868. and then

  869. to have

  870. to keep

  871. silent

  872. because

  873. the

  874. people

  875. with

  876. you

  877. care

  878. for it

  879. no more

  880. than

  881. for a

  882. tin

  883. can

  884. in

  885. the

  886. ditch.

  887. To hear

  888. a good

  889. joke

  890. and to

  891. find

  892. no one

  893. to share

  894. it

  895. with.

  896. Michael

  897. Green

  898. in his

  899. classic

  900. work

  901. Evangelism

  902. in the

  903. early

  904. church

  905. speaks

  906. of the

  907. first

  908. Christians

  909. gossiping

  910. the

  911. gospel.

  912. What a

  913. great

  914. phrase.

  915. Gossiping

  916. the

  917. gospel.

  918. The

  919. gospel

  920. just

  921. bubbled

  922. up

  923. everywhere

  924. for their

  925. witness

  926. bearing

  927. was a

  928. form of

  929. praise.

  930. The

  931. wonder

  932. and joy

  933. of their

  934. Savior

  935. just

  936. ever

  937. vesting.

  938. Ever

  939. vesting.

  940. What

  941. they were

  942. doing

  943. was

  944. just

  945. simply

  946. praising

  947. God

  948. in

  949. public.

  950. That

  951. was

  952. their

  953. witness.

  954. So

  955. our

  956. witness

  957. flows

  958. from

  959. praise

  960. of the

  961. Savior.

  962. And

  963. finally

  964. our

  965. witness

  966. bearing

  967. arises

  968. out

  969. of

  970. a

  971. stirring

  972. or a

  973. spurring

  974. of the

  975. Spirit.

  976. A

  977. spurring

  978. of the

  979. Spirit.

  980. The

  981. Holy

  982. Spirit's

  983. a

  984. missionary.

  985. A

  986. missionary

  987. comes

  988. from the

  989. Latin

  990. missio

  991. to

  992. send.

  993. The

  994. Spirit

  995. was

  996. sent

  997. among

  998. other

  999. things

  1000. to

  1001. send

  1002. us

  1003. out

  1004. on

  1005. our

  1006. mission.

  1007. And

  1008. this

  1009. is

  1010. clear

  1011. from

  1012. the

  1013. opening

  1014. of

  1015. Acts

  1016. where

  1017. Jesus

  1018. tells

  1019. his

  1020. disciples

  1021. Acts

  1022. 1-8

  1023. you

  1024. will

  1025. receive

  1026. power

  1027. when

  1028. the

  1029. Holy

  1030. Spirit

  1031. has

  1032. come

  1033. upon

  1034. you

  1035. and

  1036. you

  1037. will

  1038. be

  1039. my

  1040. witnesses.

  1041. Now

  1042. notice

  1043. that

  1044. link

  1045. between

  1046. the

  1047. Spirit's

  1048. empowering

  1049. and

  1050. witness

  1051. bearing.

  1052. And

  1053. this

  1054. pledge

  1055. of

  1056. the

  1057. empowering

  1058. witness

  1059. energizing

  1060. Spirit

  1061. was

  1062. made

  1063. good

  1064. at

  1065. Pentecost.

  1066. In

  1067. explanation

  1068. of that

  1069. event

  1070. Peter

  1071. references

  1072. the

  1073. prophecy

  1074. of

  1075. Joel

  1076. back

  1077. from

  1078. Joel 2

  1079. this is

  1080. in Acts

  1081. 2

  1082. 17-18

  1083. where

  1084. he

  1085. explains

  1086. this is

  1087. Peter

  1088. kind of

  1089. quoting

  1090. Joel's

  1091. prophecy

  1092. he says

  1093. and in

  1094. the last

  1095. days

  1096. it shall

  1097. be

  1098. God

  1099. declares

  1100. that I

  1101. will pour

  1102. out my

  1103. spirit

  1104. on all

  1105. flesh

  1106. and your

  1107. sons and

  1108. daughters

  1109. shall

  1110. prophesy

  1111. and your

  1112. young men

  1113. shall see

  1114. visions

  1115. and your

  1116. old men

  1117. shall

  1118. dream

  1119. dreams

  1120. even

  1121. on my

  1122. male

  1123. servants

  1124. and female

  1125. servants

  1126. in those

  1127. days

  1128. I will

  1129. pour out

  1130. my

  1131. spirit

  1132. and they

  1133. all

  1134. shall

  1135. prophesy

  1136. so

  1137. Peter

  1138. recognized

  1139. Pentecost

  1140. the beginning

  1141. of the

  1142. church

  1143. our age

  1144. as the

  1145. beginning

  1146. of the

  1147. fulfillment

  1148. of this

  1149. vision

  1150. and this

  1151. helps us

  1152. in our

  1153. grasp

  1154. of Peter's

  1155. understanding

  1156. of how

  1157. God's

  1158. spirit

  1159. animated

  1160. new

  1161. covenant

  1162. people

  1163. would

  1164. prophesy

  1165. and

  1166. Peter

  1167. clearly

  1168. thinks

  1169. that this

  1170. prophesying

  1171. is important

  1172. as he

  1173. doubles

  1174. the single

  1175. reference

  1176. in Joel

  1177. and Joel's

  1178. text

  1179. prophesying

  1180. only comes

  1181. up once

  1182. when he

  1183. quotes it

  1184. he doubles

  1185. it

  1186. what did

  1187. Peter

  1188. take

  1189. prophesying

  1190. to mean

  1191. Peter's

  1192. citation

  1193. of Joel

  1194. stresses

  1195. you noted

  1196. that the

  1197. activity

  1198. of the

  1199. spirit

  1200. is on

  1201. all

  1202. of God's

  1203. people

  1204. sons

  1205. and daughters

  1206. young

  1207. and old

  1208. even

  1209. servants

  1210. implying

  1211. not simply

  1212. for the

  1213. special

  1214. everybody

  1215. in these

  1216. last days

  1217. all

  1218. God's

  1219. people

  1220. will have

  1221. his Holy

  1222. Spirit

  1223. and all

  1224. shall

  1225. prophesy

  1226. now

  1227. if we

  1228. understand

  1229. prophecy

  1230. here

  1231. as simply

  1232. foretelling

  1233. some sort

  1234. of future

  1235. event

  1236. as it

  1237. is commonly

  1238. taken

  1239. the obstacle

  1240. to understanding

  1241. it that way

  1242. is that

  1243. in Acts

  1244. that goes

  1245. on being

  1246. a witness

  1247. to what

  1248. was fulfilled

  1249. in Joel's

  1250. prophecy

  1251. in Acts

  1252. there are only

  1253. a few

  1254. occasions

  1255. where people

  1256. are actually

  1257. foretelling

  1258. things

  1259. four to be

  1260. specific

  1261. 11 27

  1262. 13 1

  1263. 15 32

  1264. 21 10

  1265. you can

  1266. just read

  1267. the whole

  1268. book

  1269. no

  1270. Peter

  1271. means

  1272. by

  1273. prophesying

  1274. not

  1275. exclusively

  1276. or not

  1277. primarily

  1278. foretelling

  1279. but rather

  1280. forth

  1281. telling

  1282. of the

  1283. wonderful

  1284. news

  1285. of God's

  1286. saving

  1287. action

  1288. in Christ

  1289. he's

  1290. speaking

  1291. here about

  1292. witness

  1293. bearing

  1294. and the

  1295. outpoured

  1296. spirit

  1297. enables

  1298. each

  1299. and

  1300. every

  1301. disciple

  1302. powerfully

  1303. to bear

  1304. such

  1305. witness

  1306. solid

  1307. ground

  1308. here

  1309. solid

  1310. ground

  1311. exegetically

  1312. what does

  1313. that look

  1314. like

  1315. well the

  1316. whole book

  1317. of Acts

  1318. gives us

  1319. a picture

  1320. but we'll

  1321. just take

  1322. one glimpse

  1323. of one

  1324. little

  1325. instance

  1326. and only

  1327. that

  1328. partially

  1329. Philip

  1330. in his

  1331. connecting

  1332. with the

  1333. Ethiopian

  1334. in Acts

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  1335. chapter 8

  1336. if you

  1337. turn up

  1338. there

  1339. if you

  1340. have it

  1341. Acts

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  1342. chapter 8

  1343. I'll pick

  1344. up in

  1345. verse 26

  1346. we won't

  1347. read the

  1348. whole thing

  1349. we don't

  1350. have time

  1351. but I

  1352. commend it

  1353. to you

  1354. Acts 8

  1355. 26

  1356. now an

  1357. angel of

  1358. the Lord

  1359. said to

  1360. Philip

  1361. rise and

  1362. go toward

  1363. the south

  1364. to the

  1365. road that

  1366. goes down

  1367. from Jerusalem

  1368. to Gaza

  1369. this is a

  1370. desert place

  1371. and incidentally

  1372. the angel of

  1373. the Lord

  1374. here is

  1375. subsequently

  1376. identified as

  1377. the Holy

  1378. Spirit

  1379. in verse

  1380. 29

  1381. it's clear

  1382. that that's

  1383. what he

  1384. means

  1385. angel

  1386. messenger

  1387. of the

  1388. Lord

  1389. so

  1390. notice

  1391. the Holy

  1392. Spirit's

  1393. direct

  1394. prompting

  1395. initiative

  1396. with

  1397. Philip

  1398. the life

  1399. of a

  1400. witness

  1401. bearer

  1402. is one

  1403. open to

  1404. the promptings

  1405. of the

  1406. Holy Spirit

  1407. I wonder

  1408. if you've

  1409. ever

  1410. experienced

  1411. such

  1412. promptings

  1413. do you

  1414. recognize

  1415. them

  1416. as the

  1417. Lord's

  1418. messengers

  1419. and such

  1420. promptings

  1421. need not

  1422. be communicated

  1423. in an

  1424. audible

  1425. voice

  1426. external

  1427. perhaps

  1428. they just

  1429. present

  1430. themselves

  1431. as a

  1432. distinct

  1433. inward

  1434. sense

  1435. that we

  1436. identify

  1437. as divinely

  1438. given

  1439. how do we

  1440. do with

  1441. these

  1442. promptings

  1443. well Luke

  1444. tells us

  1445. of Philip

  1446. verse 27

  1447. Spirit

  1448. prompted

  1449. him

  1450. and he

  1451. rose

  1452. and he

  1453. went

  1454. it's

  1455. actually

  1456. quite

  1457. astonishing

  1458. we don't

  1459. have time

  1460. to look

  1461. at it

  1462. now

  1463. but

  1464. to

  1465. actually

  1466. respond

  1467. and to

  1468. go

  1469. he had

  1470. to

  1471. overcome

  1472. all kinds

  1473. of

  1474. implausibilities

  1475. whoa

  1476. whoa

  1477. whoa

  1478. whoa

  1479. that's

  1480. like

  1481. that's

  1482. like a

  1483. desert

  1484. road

  1485. why would

  1486. I

  1487. expect

  1488. to see

  1489. anyone

  1490. there

  1491. it

  1492. goes

  1493. for a

  1494. long

  1495. way

  1496. it

  1497. goes

  1498. 80

  1499. miles

  1500. all

  1501. the

  1502. way

  1503. to

  1504. Gaza

  1505. I

  1506. mean

  1507. that's

  1508. kind

  1509. of

  1510. that's

  1511. that's

  1512. kind

  1513. open-ended

  1514. oh

  1515. and by

  1516. the way

  1517. you know

  1518. it's

  1519. toward

  1520. the south

  1521. it could

  1522. also be

  1523. translated

  1524. noon

  1525. could be

  1526. rendered

  1527. noon

  1528. that is

  1529. the least

  1530. the hottest

  1531. time of the day

  1532. nobody traveled

  1533. at noon

  1534. in the desert

  1535. you die

  1536. so it's

  1537. an implausible

  1538. time

  1539. it's an

  1540. implausible

  1541. place

  1542. all

  1543. kinds

  1544. of

  1545. and

  1546. where would

  1547. he have

  1548. been

  1549. called

  1550. from

  1551. he was

  1552. in the

  1553. middle

  1554. of a

  1555. massive

  1556. evangelistic

  1557. crusade

  1558. in

  1559. Samaria

  1560. baptizing

  1561. hundreds

  1562. and hundreds

  1563. and hundreds

  1564. what he's

  1565. going to

  1566. leave that

  1567. to respond

  1568. to

  1569. this

  1570. prompting

  1571. so all

  1572. these things

  1573. that he

  1574. had

  1575. to overcome

  1576. but

  1577. we

  1578. we

  1579. notice

  1580. how does

  1581. he respond

  1582. verse 27

  1583. he rose

  1584. and went

  1585. he rose

  1586. and went

  1587. and subsequent

  1588. in the

  1589. narrative

  1590. the spirit

  1591. prompts

  1592. Philip

  1593. again

  1594. it says

  1595. in verse

  1596. 29

  1597. and the

  1598. spirit

  1599. said to

  1600. Philip

  1601. go

  1602. he says

  1603. so

  1604. Philip

  1605. ran

  1606. don't you

  1607. like that

  1608. what a

  1609. wonderful

  1610. picture

  1611. of the

  1612. disciples

  1613. alacrity

  1614. the Lord

  1615. says go

  1616. and you

  1617. just

  1618. you run

  1619. so

  1620. let's

  1621. expect

  1622. the spirit's

  1623. promptings

  1624. here's a

  1625. good prayer

  1626. to pray

  1627. as we

  1628. enter

  1629. society

  1630. whether

  1631. the

  1632. cafeteria

  1633. the gym

  1634. or the

  1635. shuttle bus

  1636. what if

  1637. we were

  1638. to pray

  1639. holy

  1640. spirit

  1641. I'm

  1642. available

  1643. I will

  1644. be

  1645. listening

  1646. to your

  1647. promptings

  1648. guide me

  1649. and grant

  1650. me occasion

  1651. to bear

  1652. witness

  1653. to your

  1654. saving

  1655. works

  1656. about

  1657. Jesus

  1658. so the

  1659. spirit

  1660. prompts

  1661. our

  1662. witness

  1663. what a

  1664. blessed

  1665. experience

  1666. and there's

  1667. a further

  1668. work of the

  1669. spirit

  1670. in operation

  1671. in our

  1672. witness

  1673. bearing

  1674. not only

  1675. does the

  1676. spirit

  1677. prompt

  1678. us

  1679. he also

  1680. prepares

  1681. the

  1682. hearer

  1683. not only

  1684. is the

  1685. spirit

  1686. behind

  1687. the

  1688. go

  1689. he's

  1690. also

  1691. behind

  1692. the

  1693. behold

  1694. in the

  1695. text

  1696. did you

  1697. catch that

  1698. text

  1699. where

  1700. okay

  1701. I'll go

  1702. down to

  1703. the

  1704. middle

  1705. of the

  1706. desert

  1707. he says

  1708. it goes

  1709. in the

  1710. middle

  1711. of the

  1712. desert

  1713. in the

  1714. middle

  1715. of the

  1716. day

  1717. and

  1718. behold

  1719. there's

  1720. somebody

  1721. here

  1722. as if

  1723. who

  1724. would

  1725. have

  1726. fought

  1727. that

  1728. who

  1729. could

  1730. imagine

  1731. that

  1732. the

  1733. spirit

  1734. is behind

  1735. the

  1736. behold

  1737. also

  1738. the

  1739. extraordinary

  1740. providence

  1741. of a

  1742. ready

  1743. hearer

  1744. appearing

  1745. in the

  1746. desert

  1747. whose

  1748. heart

  1749. was

  1750. receptive

  1751. that's

  1752. the

  1753. spirit's

  1754. orchestration

  1755. as

  1756. Luke

  1757. tells us

  1758. of Lydia

  1759. in Acts

  1760. 16

  1761. the

  1762. Lord

  1763. opened

  1764. her

  1765. heart

  1766. to

  1767. respond

  1768. to

  1769. the

  1770. things

  1771. that

  1772. Paul

  1773. said

  1774. to her

  1775. is

  1776. this

  1777. not

  1778. wonderful

  1779. encouragement

  1780. that

  1781. the

  1782. spirit

  1783. not

  1784. only

  1785. goes

  1786. with

  1787. us

  1788. prompting

  1789. us

  1790. and

  1791. empowering

  1792. our

  1793. witness

  1794. but he

  1795. also

  1796. goes

  1797. before

  1798. us

  1799. in

  1800. front

  1801. of

  1802. us

  1803. bringing

  1804. to

  1805. us

  1806. God's

  1807. elect

  1808. who

  1809. will

  1810. respond

  1811. in

  1812. faith

  1813. as

  1814. many

  1815. as

  1816. are

  1817. chosen

  1818. as

  1819. Luke

  1820. writes

  1821. of

  1822. Paul's

  1823. witness

  1824. in

  1825. Antioch

  1826. Acts

  1827. 13

  1828. 48

  1829. and

  1830. when

  1831. the

  1832. Gentiles

  1833. heard

  1834. this

  1835. this

  1836. was

  1837. the

  1838. gospel

  1839. announcement

  1840. they

  1841. began

  1842. rejoicing

  1843. and glorifying

  1844. the word

  1845. of the

  1846. Lord

  1847. and as

  1848. many

  1849. as

  1850. were

  1851. appointed

  1852. to

  1853. eternal

  1854. life

  1855. believed

  1856. God

  1857. has

  1858. a

  1859. great

  1860. harvest

  1861. that

  1862. the

  1863. Holy

  1864. Spirit

  1865. is

  1866. ripening

  1867. and

  1868. readying

  1869. for us

  1870. to gather

  1871. in

  1872. and even

  1873. when our

  1874. hearers

  1875. don't

  1876. immediately

  1877. seem

  1878. very

  1879. ripe

  1880. or

  1881. ready

  1882. the

  1883. Spirit

  1884. is

  1885. still

  1886. pursuing

  1887. the

  1888. harvest

  1889. he's

  1890. pursuing

  1891. the

  1892. harvest

  1893. and

  1894. as

  1895. the

  1896. Lord

  1897. said

  1898. to

  1899. Paul

  1900. in

  1901. the

  1902. tough

  1903. and

  1904. gritty

  1905. town

  1906. of

  1907. Corinth

  1908. we

  1909. might

  1910. say

  1911. the

  1912. Las

  1913. Vegas

  1914. of

  1915. its

  1916. day

  1917. Acts

  1918. 18

  1919. 9

  1920. and

  1921. 10

  1922. so

  1923. Paul

  1924. do

  1925. not

  1926. be

  1927. afraid

  1928. but

  1929. go

  1930. on

  1931. speaking

  1932. and

  1933. do

  1934. not

  1935. be

  1936. silent

  1937. for I

  1938. am

  1939. with

  1940. you

  1941. and

  1942. no

  1943. one

  1944. will

  1945. attack

  1946. you

  1947. to

  1948. harm

  1949. you

  1950. for

  1951. I

  1952. have

  1953. many

  1954. in

  1955. this

  1956. city

  1957. who

  1958. I

  1959. have

  1960. chosen

  1961. to

  1962. be

  1963. my

  1964. people

  1965. brothers

  1966. and

  1967. sisters

  1968. as

  1969. witness

  1970. bearers

  1971. together

  1972. we

  1973. are

  1974. on

  1975. an

  1976. adventure

  1977. that

  1978. assuredly

  1979. will

  1980. bear

  1981. fruit

  1982. for

  1983. the

  1984. Father

  1985. has

  1986. given

  1987. to

  1988. the

  1989. Son

  1990. a

  1991. number

  1992. that

  1993. no

  1994. one

  1995. can

  1996. count

  1997. from

  1998. every

  1999. tongue

  2000. tribe

  2001. and

  2002. nation

  2003. who

  2004. the

  2005. Spirit

  2006. is

  2007. drawing

  2008. and

  2009. we

  2010. by

  2011. bearing

  2012. our

  2013. gospel

  2014. witness

  2015. just

  2016. sowing

  2017. our

  2018. seed

  2019. simply

  2020. tossing

  2021. out

  2022. the

  2023. seed

  2024. maybe

  2025. almost

  2026. even

  2027. mechanically

  2028. the

  2029. soil

  2030. that

  2031. he

  2032. has

  2033. prepared

  2034. will

  2035. be

  2036. able

  2037. to

  2038. show

  2039. life

  2040. we

  2041. render

  2042. visible

  2043. with

  2044. our

  2045. witness

  2046. the

  2047. secret

  2048. inner

  2049. drawing

  2050. work

  2051. of

  2052. the

  2053. Spirit

  2054. what

  2055. a

  2056. privilege

  2057. what

  2058. a

  2059. joy

  2060. so

  2061. as

  2062. we

  2063. go

  2064. wherever

  2065. we

  2066. go

  2067. let

  2068. us

  2069. be

  2070. responsive

  2071. to

  2072. the

  2073. Spirit's

  2074. promptings

  2075. and

  2076. attentive

  2077. to

  2078. the

  2079. Spirit's

  2080. providences

  2081. perhaps

  2082. an

  2083. application

  2084. might be

  2085. the

  2086. regular

  2087. prayer

  2088. Holy

  2089. Spirit

  2090. you

  2091. were

  2092. sent

  2093. to

  2094. send

  2095. here

  2096. am I

  2097. send

  2098. me

  2099. open

  2100. my

  2101. eyes

  2102. to

  2103. your

  2104. promptings

  2105. and

  2106. open

  2107. sorry

  2108. open

  2109. my

  2110. ears

  2111. to

  2112. your

  2113. promptings

  2114. and

  2115. open

  2116. my

  2117. eyes

  2118. to

  2119. your

  2120. providences

  2121. shall

  2122. we not

  2123. pray that

  2124. together

  2125. and see

  2126. how God

  2127. delights

  2128. to answer

  2129. it

  2130. wouldn't

  2131. that be

  2132. exciting

  2133. one

  2134. final thing

  2135. to note

  2136. Luke

  2137. concludes

  2138. the

  2139. episode

  2140. but

  2141. Philip

  2142. found

  2143. himself

  2144. in

  2145. Azotus

  2146. and

  2147. as

  2148. he

  2149. passed

  2150. through

  2151. he

  2152. preached

  2153. the

  2154. gospel

  2155. to

  2156. all

  2157. the

  2158. towns

  2159. until

  2160. he

  2161. came

  2162. to

  2163. Caesarea

  2164. that's

  2165. verse

  2166. 40

  2167. interesting

  2168. no mention

  2169. is here

  2170. made of

  2171. any

  2172. special

  2173. promptings

  2174. of the

  2175. Holy

  2176. Spirit

  2177. in

  2178. regard

  2179. to

  2180. Philip's

  2181. witness

  2182. he

  2183. seems

  2184. just as

  2185. happily

  2186. willing

  2187. to

  2188. proceed

  2189. simply

  2190. on the

  2191. strength

  2192. of the

  2193. king's

  2194. commission

  2195. you

  2196. shall

  2197. be

  2198. my

  2199. witnesses

  2200. preaching

  2201. the

  2202. gospel

  2203. as

  2204. he

  2205. passed

  2206. through

  2207. all

  2208. perhaps

  2209. there's

  2210. even

  2211. a

  2212. suggestion

  2213. of a

  2214. systematic

  2215. approach

  2216. to

  2217. witness

  2218. in

  2219. the

  2220. words

  2221. in

  2222. all

  2223. the

  2224. towns

  2225. as if

  2226. he

  2227. flipped

  2228. out

  2229. his

  2230. little

  2231. map

  2232. and

  2233. figured

  2234. out

  2235. how

  2236. he

  2237. would

  2238. catch

  2239. all

  2240. of

  2241. them

  2242. certainly

  2243. the

  2244. personal

  2245. prompting

  2246. of the

  2247. Holy

  2248. Spirit

  2249. is a

  2250. great

  2251. blessing

  2252. in

  2253. our

  2254. witness

  2255. spirit

  2256. but

  2257. no

  2258. need

  2259. to

  2260. remain

  2261. quietistically

  2262. inert

  2263. apart

  2264. from

  2265. such

  2266. a

  2267. prompting

  2268. go

  2269. down

  2270. into

  2271. the

  2272. desert

  2273. no

  2274. and

  2275. neither

  2276. should

  2277. we

  2278. think

  2279. that

  2280. pulling

  2281. out

  2282. a

  2283. map

  2284. and

  2285. making

  2286. a

  2287. strategy

  2288. or a

  2289. plan

  2290. should

  2291. be

  2292. contrasted

  2293. with the

  2294. work that

  2295. the

  2296. spirit

  2297. impels

  2298. and

  2299. sustains

  2300. no

  2301. both

  2302. the

  2303. king's

  2304. commission

  2305. and

  2306. the

  2307. spirit

  2308. spurring

  2309. impel

  2310. us

  2311. let

  2312. let

  2313. stop

  2314. there

  2315. I

  2316. haven't

  2317. left

  2318. too

  2319. much

  2320. time

  2321. but

  2322. yes

  2323. if

  2324. there

  2325. are

  2326. any

  2327. questions

  2328. or

  2329. comments

  2330. I

  2331. would

  2332. love

  2333. to

  2334. entertain

  2335. them

  2336. for

  2337. probably

  2338. no

  2339. more

  2340. than

  2341. five

  2342. minutes

  2343. alas

  2344. but

  2345. I'll

  2346. do

  2347. better

  2348. next

  2349. time

  2350. I'll

  2351. work

  2352. on

  2353. that

  2354. don't

  2355. hold

  2356. me

  2357. to

  2358. it

  2359. that

  2360. might

  2361. be

  2362. a

  2363. rash

  2364. vow

  2365. but

  2366. I

  2367. will

  2368. try

  2369. yeah

  2370. questions

  2371. yeah

  2372. well

  2373. yes

  2374. the

  2375. Bible

  2376. when the

  2377. Bible

  2378. uses

  2379. judgment

  2380. it

  2381. it

  2382. uses

  2383. judgment

  2384. in a

  2385. couple

  2386. of

  2387. different

  2388. ways

  2389. and

  2390. sometimes

  2391. if we're

  2392. not

  2393. careful

  2394. about

  2395. that

  2396. it

  2397. can

  2398. be

  2399. confusing

  2400. so

  2401. one

  2402. of

  2403. them

  2404. is

  2405. a

  2406. sense

  2407. of

  2408. being

  2409. judged

  2410. or

  2411. under

  2412. judgment

  2413. or

  2414. under

  2415. condemnation

  2416. and

  2417. it

  2418. is

  2419. true

  2420. that

  2421. outside

  2422. of

  2423. Christ

  2424. we

  2425. are

  2426. all

  2427. under

  2428. condemnation

  2429. for

  2430. our

  2431. sin

  2432. and

  2433. the

  2434. only

  2435. shelter

  2436. from

  2437. the

  2438. storm

  2439. of

  2440. just

  2441. judgment

  2442. is

  2443. in

  2444. Christ

  2445. but

  2446. there's

  2447. also

  2448. sometimes

  2449. the

  2450. scripture

  2451. does

  2452. use

  2453. a

  2454. word

  2455. that

  2456. we

  2457. render

  2458. judgment

  2459. in

  2460. terms

  2461. of

  2462. an

  2463. evaluation

  2464. and

  2465. you

  2466. can

  2467. see

  2468. how

  2469. they

  2470. be

  2471. connected

  2472. and

  2473. it

  2474. is

  2475. true

  2476. that

  2477. believers

  2478. are

  2479. evaluated

  2480. for

  2481. their

  2482. life

  2483. but

  2484. not

  2485. not

  2486. to

  2487. see

  2488. if

  2489. they've

  2490. done

  2491. well

  2492. enough

  2493. to

  2494. secure

  2495. God's

  2496. favor

  2497. but

  2498. rather

  2499. as

  2500. evidential

  2501. support

  2502. that

  2503. they

  2504. have

  2505. been

  2506. truly

  2507. in a

  2508. fruitful

  2509. union

  2510. with

  2511. Christ

  2512. and

  2513. every

  2514. union

  2515. with

  2516. Christ

  2517. is

  2518. fruitful

  2519. so

  2520. there

  2521. will

  2522. inevitably

  2523. be a

  2524. fruitfulness

  2525. of life

  2526. that

  2527. then you

  2528. can

  2529. point

  2530. to

  2531. and

  2532. it

  2533. could

  2534. say

  2535. ah

  2536. this

  2537. person

  2538. is

  2539. in

  2540. Christ

  2541. look

  2542. at

  2543. the

  2544. fruit

  2545. of

  2546. this

  2547. look

  2548. at

  2549. the

  2550. love

  2551. joy

  2552. peace

  2553. patience

  2554. so

  2555. they

  2556. are

  2557. evaluated

  2558. to

  2559. affirm

  2560. the

  2561. reality

  2562. the

  2563. visible

  2564. reality

  2565. that

  2566. they

  2567. are

  2568. in

  2569. union

  2570. with

  2571. Christ

  2572. and

  2573. it

  2574. is

  2575. that

  2576. union

  2577. with

  2578. Christ

  2579. that

  2580. keeps

  2581. us

  2582. from

  2583. being

  2584. condemned

  2585. because

  2586. as

  2587. well

  2588. as

  2589. we

  2590. might

  2591. do

  2592. in

  2593. our

  2594. fruit

  2595. bearing

  2596. we

  2597. still

  2598. have

  2599. not

  2600. loved

  2601. God

  2602. without

  2603. our

  2604. heart

  2605. soul

  2606. mind

  2607. and

  2608. strength

  2609. our

  2610. neighbor

  2611. as

  2612. ourselves

  2613. who

  2614. Christ

  2615. alone

  2616. has

  2617. done

  2618. which

  2619. is

  2620. what's

  2621. required

  2622. I

  2623. I

  2624. think

  2625. that's

  2626. so

  2627. if

  2628. we

  2629. remember

  2630. that

  2631. you know

  2632. what

  2633. causes

  2634. me to

  2635. differ

  2636. from

  2637. someone

  2638. else

  2639. I'm

  2640. just

  2641. I

  2642. am

  2643. a

  2644. sinner

  2645. just

  2646. as

  2647. all

  2648. but

  2649. for

  2650. the

  2651. grace

  2652. of

  2653. God

  2654. there

  2655. go

  2656. I

  2657. absolutely

  2658. I

  2659. think

  2660. that

  2661. that

  2662. is

  2663. a

  2664. healthy

  2665. truth

  2666. to

  2667. remember

  2668. a

  2669. spiritual

  2670. truth

  2671. to

  2672. remember

  2673. yes

  2674. yep

  2675. okay

  2676. last

  2677. one

  2678. go

  2679. ahead

  2680. yeah

  2681. sure

  2682. I

  2683. believe

  2684. what

  2685. you

  2686. outlined

  2687. here

  2688. is

  2689. a

  2690. description

  2691. of

  2692. our

  2693. general

  2694. commission

  2695. would

  2696. you

  2697. have

  2698. another

  2699. talk

  2700. prepared

  2701. for

  2702. discerning

  2703. your

  2704. specific

  2705. commission

  2706. well

  2707. that

  2708. is

  2709. we'll

  2710. talk a

  2711. little

  2712. bit

  2713. about

  2714. that

  2715. I

  2716. think

  2717. when

  2718. we

  2719. ask

  2720. how

  2721. do

  2722. I

  2723. begin

  2724. where

  2725. do

  2726. I

  2727. start

  2728. because

  2729. we'll

  2730. spend

  2731. some

  2732. on

  2733. talking

  2734. about

  2735. what

  2736. is

  2737. the

  2738. gospel

  2739. so

  2740. that's

  2741. the

  2742. content

  2743. of

  2744. the

  2745. message

  2746. but

  2747. then

  2748. another

  2749. really

  2750. important

  2751. thing

  2752. is

  2753. you

  2754. gesture

  2755. at

  2756. is

  2757. what

  2758. is

  2759. the

  2760. context

  2761. for me

  2762. having

  2763. a chance

  2764. to share

  2765. some

  2766. of the

  2767. content

  2768. and

  2769. that's

  2770. going

  2771. to be

  2772. probably

  2773. pretty

  2774. peculiar

  2775. and

  2776. personalized

  2777. to each

  2778. person

  2779. what

  2780. is

  2781. the

  2782. context

  2783. in

  2784. which

  2785. I

  2786. might

  2787. have

  2788. most

  2789. natural

  2790. and

  2791. fruitful

  2792. potentially

  2793. fruitful

  2794. opportunity

  2795. so

  2796. absolutely

  2797. we will

  2798. touch

  2799. on some

  2800. of that

  2801. yes

  2802. a team

  2803. I think

  2804. we best

  2805. probably

  2806. break

  2807. please

  2808. safely

  2809. haste

  2810. to

  2811. to

  2812. to

  2813. to

  2814. worship

  2815. don't trip
