  1. Well, good morning, team.

  2. Last week, we explored the art of having the gospel heard as good news.

  3. And we particularly looked at Paul in his gospel engagement with the Athenians.

  4. And a central observation was how he connected the gospel to his hearer's world.

  5. Offered Christ as the answer to a question they were asking.

  6. We also noted how the profuse richness of the gospel itself and its abundant themes and variations resource us to do just that.

  7. That is, particularize and personalize the gospel message to each heart at its point of hunger.

  8. Now today, we continue our study by considering six stars to navigate by in our witness-bearing encounters.

  9. That is, beacons which can illuminate our path of engagement.

  10. Principles to bear in mind to help us in our desire to love our neighbor well.

  11. Not simply by seeking to share the good news with them, but how we do so.

  12. And I do hope that a common spirit comes through in these habits offered for our cultivation.

  13. A spirit which I trust is the spirit of Christ.

  14. That said, let's proceed with prayer.

  15. Lord Christ, we thank you that you are our portion and you are indeed the best of portions.

  16. May we enjoy you as such and out of that supreme enjoyment, proclaim you as infinitely enjoyable.

  17. Lord, would you grant us insight and application as we consider these principles together this morning.

  18. And Lord, may we so enjoy the gospel ourselves that it is of great comfort to us, your people,

  19. and great credit to you, our marvelous Savior.

  20. And we ask it in Jesus' name.

  21. Amen.

  22. Amen.

  23. So, our first guiding star is proceed with good questions.

  24. Now, I'm probably not capable of overstating the importance of this.

  25. Now, it is a challenge, at least for me, but it is vitally important.

  26. It alone can transform the encounter from a disquisition.

  27. And few can abide being subject to something so one-sided.

  28. From a disquisition to a dialogue.

  29. A dialogue which goes back and forth with the natural sustaining and pleasing rhythm of breathing.

  30. To ask a question is to show interest in the other.

  31. It is to invite their thoughts and feelings.

  32. It is to beckon them to build something together.

  33. And by proceed with questions.

  34. And by proceed with questions, I mean begin and continue with questions.

  35. And last week, we observed the importance of connecting the gospel to the concerns of the other if the gospel is to be heard as good news.

  36. But unless we are content to be heard as good news.

  37. But unless we are content to simply speculate, how are we to discover what their concerns are?

  38. Unless we coax them out with questions.

  39. Apart from such revealing questions, we risk casting Christ as an answer to an issue that they don't have.

  40. Hence, it is pivotal to begin with questions.

  41. But once begun, we also want to continue with questions.

  42. For this is the means by which, among other things, the conversation can continue in the natural sustaining rhythm of give and take.

  43. And by good questions, I mean questions which feel natural and appropriate to ask.

  44. And also seminal or germinal.

  45. That is, questions that can give birth to interesting and enjoyable interaction.

  46. A good question is like a womb in which things come to life and gestate and are born.

  47. In similar metaphor, Socrates, a master asker of questions, spoke of questions as midwives.

  48. Facilitating the birth of something.

  49. A truth.

  50. An insight.

  51. An epiphany.

  52. A realization.

  53. A refinement.

  54. A conviction.

  55. Well, let's look at an example of this in Acts 8 with Philip.

  56. Picking up where we left off previously with Philip on his desert road errand.

  57. And happening upon an Ethiopian reading aloud from his chariot.

  58. That's in verse 30.

  59. Acts chapter 8 verse 30.

    Acts 8:30

  60. Which reads,

  61. So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked,

  62. Do you understand what you're reading?

  63. Notice Philip launches the interaction with asking a question.

  64. Do you understand what you're reading?

  65. The question, what are you reading?

  66. Is a good question, especially in the academy, as people are reading all the time.

  67. And typically, what we read reflects what interests us.

  68. Also, Philip's question of the eunuch and those like it have the promise of engaging the other's point of reference.

  69. Where they are coming from.

  70. We don't ask them to attend what we think is important.

  71. Rather, we reflect in our question that we are willing to attend to what they feel is important.

  72. What if we don't start with questions?

  73. What if we simply launch into a disquisition?

  74. What effect will that have on the interaction of our interlocutors' experience?

  75. Yeah, yeah.

  76. Yeah, surely they will feel no more than a prop in our own drama.

  77. An object, not a subject.

  78. And notice, as a result of Philip's question,

  79. he is invited by the eunuch to say more.

  80. You see, we want to ask and to respond in a way that results in an invitation to continue.

  81. Not our buttonholing, rather their beckoning,

  82. should be the dynamic that moves the conversation along.

  83. We want to let the other, in virtue of their interest,

  84. keep drawing out our further thoughts and questions.

  85. So let's not assume that they want to hear more.

  86. Let them elicit it.

  87. And again, this is simply what it means to show love in a conversation.

  88. Preferring the other in love.

  89. And not only does Philip begin with a question,

  90. it is the continuing ethos.

  91. It's not, for Philip, simply a formal technique.

  92. It's rather the whole spirit of his interaction.

  93. As the narrative continues,

  94. so verses 30 to 35,

  95. so Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet

  96. and asked,

  97. Do you understand what you're reading?

  98. And he said,

  99. Well, how can I, unless someone guides me?

  100. And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

  101. Now the passage of Scripture that he was reading was this.

  102. Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter,

  103. and like a lamb before his shearers is silent,

  104. so he opens not his mouth.

  105. In his humiliation, justice was denied him.

  106. Who could describe his generation?

  107. For his life is taken away from the earth.

  108. And the eunuch said to Philip,

  109. About whom, I ask you,

  110. does the prophet say this?

  111. About himself?

  112. Or about someone else?

  113. Then Philip opened his mouth,

  114. and beginning with this Scripture,

  115. he told him the good news about Jesus.

  116. So, amazingly,

  117. Philip finds himself in the chariot next to the Ethiopian,

  118. with the passage of Isaiah the prophet opened before him.

  119. I can imagine myself thinking,

  120. What an entree!

  121. I sure know what to say on this topic.

  122. I've thought a lot about this.

  123. Now is my chance.

  124. But Philip does not say in his zeal,

  125. Oh, listen to this.

  126. I know a thing or two about this topic.

  127. Then launch into a disquisition.

  128. Even at the point where he has so many things he could say,

  129. he holds his tongue and lets the eunuch start with his question.

  130. Had I been in Philip's place,

  131. verse 34, I assure you,

  132. would no doubt have recorded my speech.

  133. In fact, I probably would have started talking

  134. before the eunuch finished uttering his last word in Isaiah's text.

  135. But not Philip.

  136. He does not open his mouth yet.

  137. Rather, he lets the eunuch speak and ask his question.

  138. Then, verse 35,

  139. Then, not before,

  140. Philip opened his mouth.

  141. Friends, this is other-centered witness bearing.

  142. It cares for the other as a person.

  143. It doesn't treat them as a project

  144. or merely a prospective proselyte.

  145. Wise witness bearing

  146. is as much about knowing

  147. when to keep our mouths closed

  148. as when to open them.

  149. And making it our determined practice

  150. to proceed with good questions

  151. could help us realize that ambition.

  152. Here are some questions I recently asked

  153. and found helpful toward discovering

  154. what someone cares about.

  155. Remember, we want to start to connect

  156. the gospel with what people care about.

  157. How do we discover what people care about?

  158. Well, we ask good questions.

  159. Here are a couple that I've used recently.

  160. What was some value that got inculcated

  161. when you were young

  162. that has continued to have for you

  163. a significant afterlife?

  164. If you'd love to share,

  165. I'd certainly love to hear.

  166. Or another I asked this week.

  167. If you were to see your life,

  168. till now,

  169. as a several-act drama,

  170. freeze frame a scene or two

  171. that you would say

  172. have been most determinative

  173. for who you are

  174. or aspire to be.

  175. I asked that one

  176. because the guy introduced himself

  177. as an actor.

  178. I thought it would be apropos

  179. to put it in those terms.

  180. Led to a really good conversation.

  181. Found out a lot about the guy.

  182. Here's another.

  183. If you came across Aladdin's lamp

  184. and were given three wishes,

  185. what three things

  186. would you change about your life

  187. or about the world?

  188. See,

  189. coming up with good questions

  190. is seldom a spontaneous attainment.

  191. Typically,

  192. it requires some advanced pondering.

  193. But I find it is so worth the investment.

  194. For if I have some good questions at hand,

  195. good, salty conversations

  196. are far more likely to emerge.

  197. As a witness bearer,

  198. make it your practice

  199. to concoct and collect

  200. good questions

  201. and launch and lard

  202. your conversations with them.

  203. You know,

  204. a great study to do

  205. would be to go through the Gospels

  206. and look at the questions

  207. that Jesus asks.

  208. That'd be a good way

  209. to be tutored in that.

  210. So there's the first.

  211. Proceed with good questions.

  212. The second star

  213. to navigate by

  214. is

  215. frame

  216. the interaction

  217. collaboratively.

  218. You know,

  219. it's often the case

  220. that as witness bearers,

  221. we find ourselves

  222. inhabiting

  223. a very different worldview

  224. from our neighbor

  225. with whom we're engaging.

  226. Our beliefs and behaviors

  227. are often at odds

  228. and our attempts to persuade

  229. can set us in opposition

  230. and we experience the engagement

  231. conflictually.

  232. We kind of face off

  233. as conversational antagonists.

  234. Far more fruitful,

  235. I've found,

  236. is to frame the discussion

  237. collaboratively

  238. such that we range ourselves

  239. shoulder to shoulder

  240. collectively

  241. addressing the question at hand,

  242. each offering

  243. what they have

  244. to contribute.

  245. How might one do this?

  246. Well,

  247. sometimes

  248. I open a conversation

  249. like this.

  250. Do you ever feel

  251. like life

  252. tosses us up

  253. in the midst

  254. of a drama

  255. and we have to

  256. scramble to figure out

  257. what the drama

  258. is about

  259. and what our role

  260. is in the play?

  261. Do you have

  262. a sense

  263. of what the plot

  264. is

  265. and you're part

  266. of it?

  267. Or sometimes

  268. I might use

  269. a different metaphor.

  270. Do you ever

  271. get a sense

  272. that life

  273. feels like a huge

  274. puzzle that we're

  275. trying to put together

  276. with no picture

  277. on the box

  278. to go by?

  279. Do you think

  280. you've found

  281. any corner pieces?

  282. Is a picture

  283. taking shape

  284. for you?

  285. And sometimes

  286. I'll continue

  287. the metaphor

  288. by taking up

  289. some single

  290. puzzle piece

  291. of life.

  292. Perhaps

  293. the phenomenon

  294. of consciousness

  295. or a sense

  296. of being

  297. in a moral world

  298. or a hunger

  299. a hunger

  300. for justice

  301. or beauty

  302. or intimacy.

  303. Some perplexing

  304. feature

  305. and hold it up

  306. and say

  307. hey

  308. what do you

  309. make of this piece?

  310. What picture

  311. might this point to?

  312. Do you think

  313. the blue here

  314. with a bit of white

  315. suggests ocean

  316. with the crest

  317. of a wave

  318. or could it

  319. perhaps be

  320. sky

  321. with a wisp

  322. of cloud?

  323. In other words

  324. what kind

  325. of universe

  326. do you think

  327. we might be in?

  328. A purely

  329. material one?

  330. Or do you feel

  331. these puzzle pieces

  332. point towards

  333. something else?

  334. Some

  335. transcendence?

  336. Do you see

  337. even feel

  338. how such a

  339. framing

  340. makes a difference

  341. as to how

  342. the interaction

  343. is experienced?

  344. You see

  345. it puts us

  346. alongside our

  347. neighbor

  348. laboring together

  349. to understand

  350. our existence

  351. and unravel

  352. together

  353. its mysteries

  354. not above them

  355. decanting

  356. our pronouncements

  357. from on high

  358. and neither

  359. are we locked

  360. in antagonistic

  361. combat

  362. in some

  363. gladiatorial

  364. fight to the

  365. death.

  366. During the

  367. Hundred Years

  368. War

  369. between England

  370. and France

  371. the English

  372. developed

  373. a decisively

  374. effective

  375. weapon

  376. the longbow

  377. and that

  378. was the

  379. winning weapon

  380. in battle

  381. but it was

  382. wielded

  383. not by the

  384. aristocratic

  385. knights

  386. rather by

  387. the common

  388. yeoman

  389. but to win

  390. the battles

  391. the English

  392. gentry

  393. had to get

  394. down off

  395. their high

  396. horses

  397. and stand

  398. shoulder to

  399. shoulder

  400. with their

  401. compatriot

  402. peasant

  403. and protect

  404. him as he

  405. and his

  406. longbow

  407. delivered the

  408. victory

  409. and historians

  410. credit this

  411. simple act

  412. of standing

  413. shoulder to

  414. shoulder

  415. on the same

  416. footing

  417. with sparing

  418. England the

  419. violent class

  420. revolution which

  421. roiled France

  422. in blood

  423. subsequently

  424. 1789

  425. and the

  426. witness bearer

  427. will recognize

  428. a similar

  429. potency

  430. to diffuse

  431. antagonistic

  432. spirit

  433. simply by

  434. reframing our

  435. interactions

  436. collaboratively

  437. getting down

  438. off our

  439. high horse

  440. and standing

  441. side by

  442. side

  443. tackling

  444. together

  445. the mysteries

  446. of existence

  447. so

  448. in your

  449. encounters

  450. frame

  451. your

  452. interactions

  453. collaboratively

  454. it's a

  455. star to

  456. navigate by

  457. and here's

  458. a third

  459. star to

  460. navigate by

  461. listen

  462. well

  463. listen

  464. well

  465. and really

  466. in order for

  467. our first two

  468. guiding habits

  469. to have

  470. any integrity

  471. we really

  472. must listen

  473. well

  474. I mean

  475. if we

  476. don't

  477. listen

  478. well

  479. our

  480. asking

  481. questions

  482. is only

  483. formal

  484. if

  485. their

  486. speech

  487. is only

  488. an

  489. irritating

  490. delay

  491. for our

  492. speech

  493. then

  494. our

  495. asking

  496. questions

  497. is just

  498. hypocrisy

  499. if we

  500. frame the

  501. discussion

  502. collaboratively

  503. but don't

  504. attend

  505. to their

  506. contribution

  507. our

  508. so

  509. framing

  510. the

  511. interaction

  512. is merely

  513. an offensive

  514. technique

  515. I find

  516. often

  517. at the

  518. root of

  519. my

  520. own

  521. failure

  522. to

  523. listen

  524. or to

  525. listen

  526. well

  527. is

  528. sometimes

  529. my

  530. disbelief

  531. that

  532. what I

  533. will hear

  534. is going

  535. to be

  536. anything

  537. worthwhile

  538. that I

  539. really have

  540. nothing to

  541. learn from

  542. my

  543. conversation

  544. partner

  545. now

  546. why would

  547. this

  548. attitude

  549. be

  550. almost

  551. certainly

  552. in

  553. every

  554. instance

  555. wrong

  556. well

  557. because

  558. we know

  559. that

  560. every

  561. other

  562. and

  563. no less

  564. non-believing

  565. others

  566. are

  567. yet

  568. image

  569. bearers

  570. and as

  571. such

  572. have

  573. capacity

  574. for the

  575. good

  576. the

  577. true

  578. the

  579. just

  580. and

  581. beautiful

  582. and

  583. indeed

  584. they may

  585. have

  586. a far

  587. greater

  588. giftedness

  589. for

  590. penetrating

  591. the depths

  592. of those

  593. realities

  594. than

  595. we

  596. have

  597. we

  598. have

  599. something

  600. to learn

  601. from

  602. everyone

  603. and we

  604. have much

  605. to learn

  606. from

  607. many

  608. so

  609. let us

  610. listen

  611. well

  612. let us

  613. ask

  614. ourselves

  615. occasionally

  616. what

  617. have I

  618. learned

  619. from

  620. unbelievers

  621. lately

  622. which has

  623. been

  624. consequential

  625. in my

  626. life

  627. perhaps

  628. even

  629. fundamentally

  630. reframing

  631. if I

  632. answer

  633. that question

  634. honestly

  635. I will

  636. have good

  637. reason to

  638. and want

  639. to

  640. listen

  641. well

  642. and if

  643. I answer

  644. it in the

  645. negative

  646. I suspect

  647. I might

  648. just be

  649. an

  650. epistemological

  651. bigot

  652. that is

  653. thinking I

  654. can learn

  655. nothing

  656. from

  657. unbelievers

  658. then I

  659. just have

  660. bad

  661. theology

  662. I've

  663. completely

  664. missed

  665. the

  666. implication

  667. that every

  668. human being

  669. is an

  670. image bearer

  671. and is

  672. capable

  673. of knowing

  674. truth

  675. or perhaps

  676. my problem

  677. is simply

  678. I simply

  679. interact with

  680. brothers and

  681. sisters of

  682. the sanctuary

  683. and I

  684. fail to

  685. get out

  686. much beyond

  687. church potlucks

  688. oh brothers

  689. and sisters

  690. let's not

  691. let that be

  692. the case

  693. we are not

  694. to be of

  695. the world

  696. but we

  697. are to be

  698. in it

  699. we are to

  700. be in it

  701. so a

  702. fourth star

  703. to navigate

  704. by

  705. in our

  706. witness

  707. bearing

  708. is

  709. lead

  710. with

  711. affirmation

  712. and look

  713. for

  714. resonances

  715. lead with

  716. affirmation

  717. and look

  718. for

  719. resonances

  720. we've

  721. observed this

  722. in Paul

  723. with the

  724. Athenians

  725. remember

  726. he led

  727. with

  728. affirmation

  729. chapter

  730. 1722

  731. men of

  732. Athens

  733. I perceive

  734. that in

  735. every way

  736. you are

  737. very

  738. religious

  739. and just

  740. as the

  741. apostle

  742. would be

  743. with his

  744. Athenian

  745. hearers

  746. we

  747. will

  748. inevitably

  749. come

  750. to challenge

  751. and critique

  752. it's going

  753. to be

  754. inevitable

  755. there's going

  756. to be

  757. something

  758. that we're

  759. going to

  760. critique

  761. but

  762. Paul

  763. does not

  764. open

  765. with

  766. critique

  767. and we

  768. would be

  769. wise to

  770. follow him

  771. in this

  772. we also

  773. notice

  774. Paul had

  775. found

  776. within

  777. the Athenians

  778. beliefs

  779. notions

  780. which were

  781. consonant

  782. with

  783. biblical

  784. truth

  785. instincts

  786. that they

  787. had

  788. which ran

  789. along the

  790. grain

  791. of the

  792. gospel

  793. he cites

  794. some of

  795. their poets

  796. and philosophers

  797. affirmatively

  798. and he

  799. builds

  800. his case

  801. in part

  802. out of

  803. their

  804. hunches

  805. beliefs

  806. and values

  807. now what

  808. we might

  809. ask

  810. gave the

  811. apostle

  812. confidence

  813. that he

  814. would find

  815. such

  816. common

  817. ground

  818. even

  819. among

  820. his

  821. pagan

  822. hearers

  823. some

  824. resonances

  825. that he

  826. could appeal

  827. to

  828. and work

  829. with

  830. now this

  831. is important

  832. for us to

  833. have this

  834. confidence

  835. in Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  836. chapter 1

  837. Paul relates

  838. that God

  839. has revealed

  840. himself to

  841. humanity

  842. and although

  843. we seek

  844. to smother

  845. the truth

  846. of God

  847. to evade

  848. his claim

  849. upon us

  850. we suppress

  851. this truth

  852. incompletely

  853. and

  854. inconsistently

  855. there

  856. remains

  857. truth

  858. about God

  859. that we

  860. know

  861. notice the

  862. present tense

  863. of verse 32

  864. we know

  865. these things

  866. indeed

  867. our

  868. ongoing

  869. suppression

  870. of these

  871. truths

  872. belies

  873. that it

  874. remains

  875. exerting

  876. counter pressure

  877. and ready

  878. to bob

  879. up to the

  880. surface

  881. of our

  882. consciousness

  883. if we

  884. relax our

  885. efforts

  886. to repress

  887. it

  888. now we

  889. might call

  890. these

  891. vestigial

  892. truths

  893. or echoes

  894. of the

  895. knowledge

  896. of God

  897. and we

  898. through our

  899. rebelliousness

  900. would mute

  901. these echoes

  902. but we

  903. can never

  904. finally

  905. silence

  906. them

  907. we

  908. can never

  909. fully

  910. rid

  911. ourselves

  912. of the

  913. truths

  914. and tokens

  915. that derive

  916. from the

  917. reality of

  918. God

  919. you see

  920. sin

  921. is not

  922. omnipotent

  923. it can

  924. deface

  925. but never

  926. completely

  927. efface

  928. the divine

  929. fingerprints

  930. that are

  931. inscribed

  932. upon

  933. us

  934. image

  935. bearers

  936. neither

  937. the imprint

  938. of the

  939. creator

  940. in

  941. broader

  942. creation

  943. however

  944. much we

  945. try

  946. radically

  947. to

  948. redecorate

  949. our

  950. consciousness

  951. there is

  952. always

  953. furniture

  954. mental

  955. moral

  956. material

  957. that

  958. persists

  959. in

  960. pointing

  961. to

  962. the

  963. divine

  964. presence

  965. !

  966. and so

  967. !

  968. residences

  969. will

  970. always

  971. remain

  972. and when

  973. discovered

  974. we can

  975. affirm

  976. them

  977. it's kind

  978. of like

  979. we need to

  980. hold these

  981. things up

  982. into the

  983. light

  984. and point

  985. out

  986. look

  987. there's a

  988. watermark

  989. here

  990. we didn't

  991. see it

  992. first

  993. point

  994. these

  995. things

  996. out

  997. in

  998. conversations

  999. as

  1000. witness

  1001. bearers

  1002. look

  1003. for

  1004. opportunities

  1005. to

  1006. affirm

  1007. yes

  1008. that

  1009. seems

  1010. right

  1011. to me

  1012. yeah

  1013. that

  1014. instinct

  1015. feels

  1016. solid

  1017. to me

  1018. you know

  1019. that

  1020. strikes

  1021. me

  1022. as a

  1023. critical

  1024. thread

  1025. in this

  1026. matter

  1027. let's

  1028. pull on

  1029. that

  1030. together

  1031. it

  1032. seems

  1033. to be

  1034. a

  1035. promising

  1036. lead

  1037. so you

  1038. want to

  1039. look

  1040. for

  1041. opportunity

  1042. to say

  1043. such

  1044. things

  1045. and

  1046. lard

  1047. your

  1048. interaction

  1049. with

  1050. them

  1051. and

  1052. even

  1053. if we

  1054. find

  1055. little

  1056. to

  1057. agree

  1058. upon

  1059. perhaps

  1060. affirm

  1061. that

  1062. you

  1063. share

  1064. the

  1065. conviction

  1066. that

  1067. this

  1068. is

  1069. a

  1070. critical

  1071. and

  1072. consequential

  1073. topic

  1074. which

  1075. deserves

  1076. our

  1077. best

  1078. attention

  1079. and

  1080. reflection

  1081. so

  1082. let's

  1083. let's

  1084. receive

  1085. even

  1086. as

  1087. we

  1088. give

  1089. so

  1090. lead

  1091. with

  1092. affirmation

  1093. and

  1094. look

  1095. for

  1096. resonances

  1097. well

  1098. here's

  1099. another

  1100. a fifth

  1101. star

  1102. to

  1103. navigate

  1104. by

  1105. and

  1106. that

  1107. is

  1108. be

  1109. prepared

  1110. to

  1111. tell

  1112. your

  1113. story

  1114. be

  1115. prepared

  1116. to

  1117. tell

  1118. your

  1119. story

  1120. at

  1121. times

  1122. the

  1123. faith

  1124. that

  1125. we

  1126. commend

  1127. is

  1128. regarded

  1129. by

  1130. our

  1131. neighbors

  1132. as

  1133. unimaginable

  1134. and

  1135. it is

  1136. inconceivable

  1137. to

  1138. them

  1139. that

  1140. they

  1141. could

  1142. ever

  1143. arrive

  1144. at

  1145. it

  1146. the

  1147. conviction

  1148. is

  1149. like

  1150. that

  1151. of

  1152. the

  1153. old

  1154. new

  1155. england

  1156. farmer

  1157. who

  1158. when

  1159. asked

  1160. how

  1161. do you

  1162. get to

  1163. a

  1164. certain

  1165. town

  1166. he

  1167. responded

  1168. !

  1169. you

  1170. can't

  1171. get there

  1172. from

  1173. here

  1174. well

  1175. one

  1176. helpful

  1177. way

  1178. of

  1179. bridging

  1180. that

  1181. gap

  1182. in

  1183. imagination

  1184. is

  1185. by

  1186. telling

  1187. the

  1188. story

  1189. of

  1190. how

  1191. you

  1192. in

  1193. fact

  1194. managed

  1195. to

  1196. get

  1197. there

  1198. you

  1199. see

  1200. your

  1201. story

  1202. can

  1203. take

  1204. the

  1205. unimaginable

  1206. and

  1207. break

  1208. it

  1209. down

  1210. into

  1211. small

  1212. concrete

  1213. steps

  1214. I

  1215. can't

  1216. get

  1217. there

  1218. from

  1219. here

  1220. well

  1221. sure

  1222. you

  1223. can

  1224. I

  1225. did

  1226. here's

  1227. how

  1228. like

  1229. Indiana

  1230. Jones

  1231. in

  1232. the

  1233. last

  1234. crusade

  1235. who

  1236. remember

  1237. that

  1238. scene

  1239. he

  1240. threw

  1241. sand

  1242. across

  1243. on

  1244. the

  1245. invisible

  1246. bridge

  1247. across

  1248. that

  1249. chasm

  1250. similarly

  1251. our

  1252. personal

  1253. stories

  1254. may

  1255. render

  1256. visible

  1257. a

  1258. path

  1259. that

  1260. as

  1261. yet

  1262. may

  1263. not

  1264. be

  1265. seen

  1266. in

  1267. telling

  1268. our

  1269. story

  1270. it

  1271. can

  1272. be

  1273. helpful

  1274. to

  1275. show

  1276. how

  1277. where

  1278. we

  1279. started

  1280. out

  1281. is

  1282. not

  1283. that

  1284. different

  1285. perhaps

  1286. from

  1287. where

  1288. our

  1289. hearer

  1290. now

  1291. stands

  1292. and

  1293. finds

  1294. themselves

  1295. so

  1296. when

  1297. Paul

  1298. addressed

  1299. Jews

  1300. who

  1301. found

  1302. his

  1303. faith

  1304. unimaginable

  1305. he

  1306. emphasized

  1307. how

  1308. he

  1309. had

  1310. been

  1311. as

  1312. he

  1313. put

  1314. it

  1315. just

  1316. as

  1317. you

  1318. are

  1319. in

  1320. Acts

  1321. 22

  1322. chapter

  1323. 3

  1324. he

  1325. says

  1326. I

  1327. am

  1328. a

  1329. Jew

  1330. he

  1331. tells

  1332. to

  1333. the

  1334. crowd

  1335. that

  1336. he

  1337. is

  1338. a

  1339. Jewish

  1340. crowd

  1341. that

  1342. he

  1343. is

  1344. conversing

  1345. with

  1346. I

  1347. am

  1348. a Jew

  1349. born

  1350. in

  1351. Tarsus

  1352. of

  1353. Cilicia

  1354. but

  1355. brought

  1356. up

  1357. in

  1358. this

  1359. city

  1360. educated

  1361. at the

  1362. feet

  1363. of

  1364. Gamaliel

  1365. according

  1366. to the

  1367. strict

  1368. manner

  1369. of the

  1370. law

  1371. of

  1372. our

  1373. fathers

  1374. being

  1375. zealous

  1376. for

  1377. God

  1378. as

  1379. all

  1380. of

  1381. you

  1382. are

  1383. this

  1384. very

  1385. day

  1386. he

  1387. would

  1388. go

  1389. on

  1390. to

  1391. tell

  1392. them

  1393. that

  1394. that

  1395. his

  1396. initial

  1397. reaction

  1398. to the

  1399. Christian

  1400. faith

  1401. was

  1402. just

  1403. as

  1404. negative

  1405. as

  1406. theirs

  1407. likely

  1408. more

  1409. so

  1410. verse

  1411. four

  1412. I

  1413. persecuted

  1414. this

  1415. way

  1416. to

  1417. the

  1418. death

  1419. binding

  1420. and

  1421. delivering

  1422. to

  1423. prison

  1424. both

  1425. men

  1426. and

  1427. women

  1428. as

  1429. the

  1430. high

  1431. priest

  1432. and

  1433. the

  1434. whole

  1435. council

  1436. of

  1437. elders

  1438. can

  1439. bear

  1440. me

  1441. witness

  1442. now

  1443. why

  1444. is

  1445. this

  1446. kind

  1447. of

  1448. identification

  1449. so

  1450. vital

  1451. you

  1452. see

  1453. Paul's

  1454. hearers

  1455. and

  1456. ours

  1457. must

  1458. sense

  1459. that

  1460. we

  1461. get

  1462. how

  1463. indigestible

  1464. our

  1465. message

  1466. may

  1467. sound

  1468. to

  1469. them

  1470. they

  1471. need

  1472. to

  1473. sense

  1474. that

  1475. we

  1476. really

  1477. comprehend

  1478. and

  1479. feel

  1480. the

  1481. reasons

  1482. that

  1483. compel

  1484. them

  1485. to

  1486. reject

  1487. our

  1488. message

  1489. and

  1490. if

  1491. we

  1492. don't

  1493. acknowledge

  1494. the

  1495. reality

  1496. and

  1497. intensity

  1498. of

  1499. the

  1500. bones

  1501. stuck

  1502. in

  1503. the

  1504. throat

  1505. we

  1506. really

  1507. won't

  1508. have

  1509. any

  1510. personal

  1511. credibility

  1512. with

  1513. them

  1514. it

  1515. will

  1516. reinforce

  1517. the

  1518. perhaps

  1519. presumed

  1520. or

  1521. at

  1522. least

  1523. strongly

  1524. suspected

  1525. alienness

  1526. of

  1527. us

  1528. not

  1529. just

  1530. our

  1531. message

  1532. of

  1533. us

  1534. interestingly

  1535. if we

  1536. compare

  1537. the two

  1538. accounts

  1539. of Paul's

  1540. telling his

  1541. story

  1542. that occur

  1543. in Acts

  1544. one

  1545. before the

  1546. temple mob

  1547. that we

  1548. just looked

  1549. at

  1550. and then

  1551. one

  1552. before

  1553. King

  1554. Agrippa

  1555. that occurs

  1556. in Acts

  1557. 26

  1558. we

  1559. notice

  1560. some

  1561. variation

  1562. he

  1563. is

  1564. adapting

  1565. his

  1566. testimony

  1567. to

  1568. his

  1569. audience

  1570. now

  1571. remember

  1572. that

  1573. every

  1574. gospel

  1575. testimony

  1576. presents

  1577. Jesus

  1578. as the

  1579. answer

  1580. to

  1581. some

  1582. question

  1583. and

  1584. the

  1585. fulfillment

  1586. of

  1587. some

  1588. deep

  1589. desire

  1590. and

  1591. in all

  1592. likelihood

  1593. our

  1594. stories

  1595. of

  1596. God's

  1597. saving

  1598. dealings

  1599. with

  1600. us

  1601. will

  1602. have

  1603. all

  1604. kinds

  1605. of

  1606. themes

  1607. and

  1608. themes

  1609. as

  1610. intricate

  1611. and

  1612. multiple

  1613. as

  1614. the

  1615. distributaries

  1616. in the

  1617. Nile

  1618. Delta

  1619. but

  1620. which

  1621. course

  1622. should

  1623. our

  1624. narrative

  1625. take

  1626. along

  1627. which

  1628. of the

  1629. many

  1630. possible

  1631. themes

  1632. should

  1633. we

  1634. unfold

  1635. our

  1636. story

  1637. of

  1638. faith

  1639. well

  1640. let

  1641. us

  1642. select

  1643. our

  1644. theme

  1645. according

  1646. to

  1647. which

  1648. we

  1649. think

  1650. might

  1651. be

  1652. most

  1653. resonant

  1654. to

  1655. our

  1656. hearers

  1657. in

  1658. other

  1659. words

  1660. we

  1661. seek

  1662. to

  1663. contextualize

  1664. our

  1665. story

  1666. within

  1667. what

  1668. we

  1669. know

  1670. of

  1671. their

  1672. story

  1673. and

  1674. just

  1675. as

  1676. the

  1677. gospel

  1678. itself

  1679. has

  1680. wonderful

  1681. adaptability

  1682. and

  1683. applicability

  1684. so

  1685. also

  1686. does

  1687. our

  1688. experience

  1689. of the

  1690. gospel

  1691. and

  1692. we

  1693. adapt

  1694. it

  1695. and

  1696. apply

  1697. it

  1698. according

  1699. to

  1700. our

  1701. audience

  1702. so

  1703. it's

  1704. well

  1705. worth

  1706. thinking

  1707. through

  1708. the

  1709. story

  1710. of

  1711. how

  1712. God

  1713. brought

  1714. you

  1715. to

  1716. himself

  1717. what

  1718. are

  1719. its

  1720. themes

  1721. which

  1722. of

  1723. those

  1724. themes

  1725. might

  1726. resonate

  1727. with

  1728. your

  1729. as yet

  1730. unbelieving

  1731. neighbors

  1732. see

  1733. as witness

  1734. bearers

  1735. we

  1736. want

  1737. to be

  1738. prepared

  1739. to

  1740. speak

  1741. our

  1742. story

  1743. and

  1744. maybe

  1745. be

  1746. prepared

  1747. to be

  1748. able

  1749. to

  1750. speak

  1751. it

  1752. variously

  1753. along

  1754. several

  1755. themes

  1756. depending

  1757. upon

  1758. the

  1759. resonance

  1760. of

  1761. each

  1762. does

  1763. that

  1764. make

  1765. sense

  1766. good

  1767. good

  1768. no I'm

  1769. glad

  1770. I'm

  1771. glad

  1772. well

  1773. as our

  1774. final

  1775. guiding

  1776. star

  1777. keep

  1778. fresh

  1779. and

  1780. vivid

  1781. how

  1782. the

  1783. gospel

  1784. is

  1785. good

  1786. news

  1787. for

  1788. you

  1789. keep

  1790. fresh

  1791. and

  1792. vivid

  1793. how

  1794. the

  1795. gospel

  1796. is

  1797. good

  1798. news

  1799. for

  1800. you

  1801. well

  1802. we

  1803. we've

  1804. emphasized

  1805. how

  1806. for

  1807. the

  1808. gospel

  1809. to

  1810. be

  1811. heard

  1812. as

  1813. good

  1814. news

  1815. we

  1816. need

  1817. to

  1818. connect

  1819. it

  1820. to

  1821. our

  1822. neighbors

  1823. cares

  1824. well

  1825. how

  1826. does

  1827. the

  1828. gospel

  1829. bring

  1830. good

  1831. news

  1832. to

  1833. those

  1834. places

  1835. which

  1836. absorb

  1837. them

  1838. whether

  1839. places

  1840. of

  1841. longing

  1842. reflecting

  1843. the

  1844. stirrings

  1845. of the

  1846. image

  1847. of God

  1848. or

  1849. places

  1850. of

  1851. languishing

  1852. reflecting

  1853. the

  1854. experience

  1855. of the

  1856. brokenness

  1857. in our

  1858. fallen

  1859. world

  1860. we

  1861. are

  1862. all

  1863. as

  1864. fallen

  1865. humans

  1866. in the

  1867. image

  1868. of

  1869. God

  1870. a

  1871. melange

  1872. of

  1873. anguish

  1874. and

  1875. aspiration

  1876. a

  1877. composite

  1878. nursery

  1879. of

  1880. insecurities

  1881. a

  1882. china

  1883. cabinet

  1884. of

  1885. fragility

  1886. and

  1887. an

  1888. orphanage

  1889. of

  1890. longings

  1891. and

  1892. it is

  1893. to

  1894. these

  1895. soarings

  1896. and

  1897. sighings

  1898. that we

  1899. want to

  1900. bring

  1901. the hope

  1902. of the

  1903. gospel

  1904. but how

  1905. will we

  1906. grow

  1907. in the

  1908. skill

  1909. of applying

  1910. this

  1911. the gospel

  1912. pan

  1913. pharmacon

  1914. or the

  1915. universal

  1916. healing

  1917. bomb

  1918. to the

  1919. ailments

  1920. and the

  1921. longings

  1922. of our

  1923. world

  1924. how do

  1925. we do

  1926. it

  1927. how do

  1928. we get

  1929. good at

  1930. doing

  1931. that

  1932. well

  1933. by

  1934. applying

  1935. the

  1936. gospel

  1937. to

  1938. our

  1939. own

  1940. ailments

  1941. and our

  1942. own

  1943. longings

  1944. does that

  1945. make sense

  1946. yeah

  1947. yeah

  1948. yeah

  1949. we

  1950. we need

  1951. to keep

  1952. fresh

  1953. and vivid

  1954. how the

  1955. gospel

  1956. is good

  1957. news

  1958. for us

  1959. in these

  1960. very things

  1961. and not

  1962. just

  1963. generically

  1964. but with

  1965. all of

  1966. its

  1967. comprehensive

  1968. particularity

  1969. and

  1970. concreteness

  1971. so

  1972. when we

  1973. ourselves

  1974. and we

  1975. will

  1976. we

  1977. ourselves

  1978. and we

  1979. will

  1980. experience

  1981. the ache

  1982. of longing

  1983. then we

  1984. need to

  1985. ask

  1986. of

  1987. ourselves

  1988. does

  1989. does this

  1990. not

  1991. reflect

  1992. the agitation

  1993. of a soul

  1994. that

  1995. shall

  1996. never

  1997. find

  1998. its

  1999. full

  2000. fulfillment

  2001. in

  2002. any

  2003. earthly

  2004. object

  2005. see

  2006. I'm

  2007. preaching

  2008. the gospel

  2009. to myself

  2010. surely

  2011. such

  2012. earthly

  2013. objects

  2014. only

  2015. stir

  2016. up a

  2017. hunger

  2018. they can

  2019. never

  2020. satisfy

  2021. plunge

  2022. myself

  2023. in

  2024. earthly

  2025. pools

  2026. as

  2027. ever

  2028. much

  2029. I

  2030. may

  2031. they

  2032. never

  2033. satisfy

  2034. they

  2035. never

  2036. have

  2037. they

  2038. never

  2039. will

  2040. this

  2041. is

  2042. my

  2043. unrelieved

  2044. experience

  2045. the

  2046. longing

  2047. lingers

  2048. the

  2049. restlessness

  2050. always

  2051. remains

  2052. and

  2053. shall

  2054. ever

  2055. remain

  2056. until

  2057. it

  2058. finds

  2059. its

  2060. rest

  2061. in

  2062. the

  2063. eternal

  2064. God

  2065. the

  2066. eternal

  2067. God

  2068. alone

  2069. whose

  2070. welcome

  2071. and

  2072. rest

  2073. the

  2074. gospel

  2075. proclaims

  2076. and

  2077. which

  2078. peace

  2079. and

  2080. joy

  2081. I

  2082. have

  2083. truly

  2084. felt

  2085. in

  2086. my

  2087. in

  2088. most

  2089. places

  2090. by

  2091. the

  2092. power

  2093. of

  2094. the

  2095. Holy

  2096. Spirit

  2097. what

  2098. am

  2099. I

  2100. doing

  2101. I'm

  2102. preaching

  2103. the

  2104. gospel

  2105. to

  2106. myself

  2107. I'm

  2108. applying

  2109. the

  2110. good

  2111. news

  2112. to

  2113. my

  2114. aches

  2115. so

  2116. I

  2117. feel

  2118. its

  2119. comfort

  2120. more

  2121. vividly

  2122. and

  2123. I

  2124. get

  2125. to

  2126. the

  2127. point

  2128. where

  2129. I

  2130. can

  2131. say

  2132. can

  2133. I

  2134. say

  2135. one

  2136. thing

  2137. have

  2138. I

  2139. desired

  2140. that

  2141. will

  2142. I

  2143. seek

  2144. after

  2145. that

  2146. I

  2147. may

  2148. dwell

  2149. in

  2150. the

  2151. house

  2152. of

  2153. the

  2154. Lord

  2155. forever

  2156. surely

  2157. in

  2158. his

  2159. presence

  2160. his

  2161. fullness

  2162. of

  2163. joy

  2164. and

  2165. at

  2166. his

  2167. right

  2168. hand

  2169. are

  2170. pleasures

  2171. forevermore

  2172. need to

  2173. preach

  2174. the

  2175. gospel

  2176. to

  2177. ourselves

  2178. to

  2179. feel

  2180. its

  2181. vividness

  2182. to

  2183. feel

  2184. that

  2185. it

  2186. is

  2187. good

  2188. news

  2189. and

  2190. when

  2191. we

  2192. experience

  2193. the

  2194. ache

  2195. of

  2196. sorrow

  2197. that

  2198. slowly

  2199. ceaselessly

  2200. grinds

  2201. our

  2202. fondest

  2203. earthly

  2204. hopes

  2205. to

  2206. dust

  2207. by

  2208. its

  2209. many

  2210. millstones

  2211. when

  2212. the

  2213. quiet

  2214. accumulation

  2215. of

  2216. disappointment

  2217. scatters

  2218. across

  2219. the

  2220. landscape

  2221. of

  2222. our

  2223. life

  2224. like

  2225. the

  2226. trail

  2227. of

  2228. cherished

  2229. belongings

  2230. discarded

  2231. from

  2232. covered

  2233. wagons

  2234. heading

  2235. west

  2236. over

  2237. the

  2238. Rockies

  2239. when

  2240. our

  2241. lot

  2242. is

  2243. the

  2244. rubble

  2245. and

  2246. ruin

  2247. of

  2248. shattered

  2249. hopes

  2250. and

  2251. aching

  2252. loss

  2253. can

  2254. we

  2255. then

  2256. yet

  2257. affirm

  2258. with

  2259. Habakkuk

  2260. that

  2261. gospel

  2262. wonder

  2263. though

  2264. the

  2265. fig tree

  2266. should

  2267. not

  2268. blossom

  2269. nor

  2270. fruit

  2271. beyond

  2272. the

  2273. vines

  2274. the

  2275. produce

  2276. of

  2277. the

  2278. olive

  2279. fail

  2280. and

  2281. the

  2282. fields

  2283. yield

  2284. no

  2285. food

  2286. the

  2287. flock

  2288. be

  2289. cut

  2290. off

  2291. from

  2292. the

  2293. fold

  2294. and

  2295. there

  2296. be

  2297. no

  2298. herd

  2299. in

  2300. the

  2301. stalls

  2302. yet

  2303. I

  2304. will

  2305. rejoice

  2306. in

  2307. the

  2308. Lord

  2309. I

  2310. will

  2311. take

  2312. joy

  2313. in

  2314. the

  2315. God

  2316. of

  2317. my

  2318. salvation

  2319. can

  2320. we

  2321. take

  2322. joy

  2323. in

  2324. the

  2325. gospel

  2326. can

  2327. we

  2328. welcome

  2329. from

  2330. afar

  2331. that

  2332. sure

  2333. and

  2334. unfading

  2335. gospel

  2336. hope

  2337. that

  2338. Christ

  2339. will

  2340. himself

  2341. wipe

  2342. away

  2343. every

  2344. tear

  2345. and

  2346. sorrow

  2347. and

  2348. sighing

  2349. shall

  2350. flee

  2351. away

  2352. can

  2353. we

  2354. hear

  2355. within

  2356. our

  2357. soul

  2358. that

  2359. voice

  2360. of

  2361. many

  2362. waters

  2363. proclaim

  2364. behold

  2365. I

  2366. am

  2367. making

  2368. all

  2369. things

  2370. new

  2371. and

  2372. when

  2373. our

  2374. sands

  2375. are

  2376. low

  2377. and

  2378. the

  2379. silver

  2380. cord

  2381. shall

  2382. soon

  2383. be

  2384. snapped

  2385. and

  2386. the

  2387. pitcher

  2388. be

  2389. shattered

  2390. at

  2391. the

  2392. fountain

  2393. and

  2394. the

  2395. all

  2396. devouring

  2397. grave

  2398. looms

  2399. before

  2400. us

  2401. and

  2402. would

  2403. snuff

  2404. out

  2405. all

  2406. things

  2407. dear

  2408. to

  2409. us

  2410. upon

  2411. this

  2412. earth

  2413. and

  2414. we

  2415. must

  2416. be

  2417. wrapped

  2418. in

  2419. death's

  2420. shroud

  2421. make

  2422. our

  2423. home

  2424. in

  2425. the

  2426. grave

  2427. and

  2428. mingle

  2429. once

  2430. more

  2431. with

  2432. kindred

  2433. dust

  2434. will

  2435. we

  2436. yet

  2437. hear

  2438. those

  2439. words

  2440. in

  2441. faith

  2442. whispered

  2443. by the

  2444. master

  2445. I

  2446. am

  2447. the

  2448. resurrection

  2449. and the

  2450. life

  2451. whoever

  2452. believes

  2453. in me

  2454. though

  2455. they

  2456. die

  2457. yet

  2458. they

  2459. shall

  2460. live

  2461. oh

  2462. friends

  2463. as

  2464. we

  2465. keep

  2466. fresh

  2467. and

  2468. vivid

  2469. these

  2470. glorious

  2471. gospel

  2472. truths

  2473. in

  2474. our

  2475. own

  2476. life

  2477. we

  2478. as

  2479. witness

  2480. bearers

  2481. shall

  2482. be able

  2483. to testify

  2484. to them

  2485. with

  2486. that same

  2487. freshness

  2488. and

  2489. vividness

  2490. among

  2491. our

  2492. neighbors

  2493. when

  2494. the

  2495. gospel

  2496. is

  2497. good

  2498. news

  2499. to

  2500. us

  2501. gloriously

  2502. ecstatically

  2503. we

  2504. shall

  2505. be able

  2506. to share

  2507. it as

  2508. indeed

  2509. glorious

  2510. good news

  2511. to

  2512. others

  2513. amen

  2514. amen

  2515. amen

  2516. thank you

  2517. team

  2518. next week

  2519. we will

  2520. continue on

  2521. with our

  2522. final

  2523. final

  2524. session

  2525. first

  2526. steps

  2527. in getting

  2528. started

  2531. we will

  2532. be

  2533. together

  2534. then

  2535. do

  2536. make

  2537. haste

  2538. so

  2539. we

  2540. can

  2541. make

  2542. it

  2543. to

  2544. the

  2545. service

  2546. thanks

  2547. and

  2548. blessings
