  1. Well, good morning, church. We are returning once more to the Sermon on the Mount,

  2. and specifically to the Lord's Prayer in Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  3. So why don't we pray as we come again to God's Word.

  4. Father, as we come again to this prayer that Jesus taught us,

  5. help us to not just learn what it means,

  6. but help us to take it into our lives and make this prayer our own.

  7. And in our prayerful communion with you,

  8. we ask that your kingdom would come and your will would be done

  9. in our lives, in our church, and in our world, on earth as in heaven.

  10. Father, we pray this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

  11. All right, well, today we're wrapping up our series on the Lord's Prayer

  12. by looking at the sixth and last petition that Jesus gives us in verse 13,

  13. which says,

  14. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  15. Now, if you notice in the ESV foot… in the ESV anyway,

  16. there's a footnote that says,

  17. sometimes we include with this prayer,

  18. because yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

  19. Amen. We're not going to talk about that, but I think maybe Matt and I,

  20. we haven't talked about this, but I think we'll write a pastor letter

  21. that'll go out in the newsletter kind of talking about that last part.

  22. So we won't discuss that this morning.

  23. We'll talk about the newsletter.

  24. So there's your plug to sign up for the newsletter and read it this week.

  25. But we're going to look at this last petition,

  26. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  27. Now, when you spend time meditating on the Lord's Prayer

  28. and begin praying it for yourself,

  29. you realize pretty quickly that the first half of the prayer is focused on God, right?

  30. God's name and God's kingdom and God's will.

  31. And then the second half you find is focused on our needs.

  32. And the needs expressed in the Lord's Prayer

  33. are really our most important and essential needs.

  34. Two weeks ago, we looked at our need for provision.

  35. Give us this day our daily bread.

  36. And last week, we looked at our need for pardon.

  37. Forgive us our debts.

  38. And this week, we come to our need for spiritual protection and for power.

  39. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  40. Now, I think this last petition is a little like smelling salts.

  41. If we've grown sleepy or complacent in our spiritual life,

  42. this last petition comes and it comes to wake us up.

  43. It jolts us out of our spiritual stupor.

  44. Why?

  45. Because this last petition is about spiritual battle.

  46. It's about the nitty-gritty of living life in the real world.

  47. Now, what do we know about the world?

  48. The world that we're in, it's a beautiful world, right?

  49. It's a world that's loved by God and being redeemed by God.

  50. Yes, but in this age, it is also a fallen world,

  51. a world that's full of spiritual dangers.

  52. J.I. Packer, the great British theologian commenting on this verse,

  53. uses a powerful image.

  54. He says, you know, if we fail to see this reality,

  55. if we ignore or pretend that life is not a spiritual struggle,

  56. then he says,

  57. you're like a person walking blindfolded and with ears plugged

  58. in the middle of a city street with traffic coming both ways.

  59. So with this last petition here,

  60. Jesus wants us to take the blindfold off

  61. and be ready for the spiritual battle.

  62. But it's not just, it's not just awareness that Jesus wants us to have.

  63. He's also telling us the key for living in the midst of that battle.

  64. And the key is prayer.

  65. It's one thing to know you're in a struggle, right?

  66. It's another thing to know how to navigate it.

  67. You see, as living as part of God's kingdom,

  68. living as part of God's kingdom with Jesus as your king,

  69. that is the greatest adventure any life could ever have.

  70. God's kingdom has dawned and is making all things new.

  71. The church is an outpost of that kingdom.

  72. It's an advanced foretaste of what's to come.

  73. As we live in mercy, in truth, in forgiveness, in righteousness,

  74. as we embrace Jesus as our king,

  75. as we announce him with joy as who he truly is,

  76. the world's rightful Lord,

  77. this is the great adventure that we're in.

  78. But like any great journey,

  79. this one, above all, will have trials,

  80. will have dangers,

  81. will even have enemies.

  82. So what do we do?

  83. How do we proceed?

  84. Well, there are two halves to this petition.

  85. So in our time this morning,

  86. we're just going to consider it in two simple points,

  87. just looking at the first half and then the second half.

  88. And in the first half,

  89. we see that we need to pray for God

  90. to lead us away from temptation.

  91. So what is temptation?

  92. Well, the Greek word can actually mean either a trial or a test,

  93. or it can mean what we normally mean by it,

  94. a temptation.

  95. That is, that experience of an inner tug,

  96. an inner pull,

  97. to disobey God and God's word.

  98. Listen to how the book of James describes

  99. the dynamic of temptation in that second sense,

  100. which I think is what Jesus means here.

  101. James chapter 1 verses 14 and 15 says this.

    James 1:14

  102. James says,

  103. each person is tempted

  104. when he's lured and enticed by his own desire.

  105. Then desire, when it has conceived,

  106. gives birth to sin.

  107. And sin, when it's fully grown,

  108. brings forth death.

  109. So temptation, James says,

  110. is when we're lured or enticed by our own desire.

  111. Now we have to be clear,

  112. desire, of course,

  113. isn't in itself a bad thing.

  114. God created us as humans to have hearts

  115. that are passionate and are full of desire.

  116. He wants us to hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  117. He made us to seek and desire his kingdom

  118. and his glory.

  119. And as those who know the new birth of the Holy Spirit,

  120. we know what it's like to have those desires for God.

  121. But notice that James says here,

  122. temptation is when we're lured and enticed

  123. by what he says our own desire.

  124. That is a desire that's centered on self

  125. and not on God.

  126. A desire that's blind to God's glory

  127. or to God's good law.

  128. A desire that kind of wants to throw those things off

  129. and rather than please God,

  130. it just wants to satisfy ourselves.

  131. And if you've been a Christian for any length of time,

  132. you know exactly what James is describing.

  133. Even though our sins have been forgiven

  134. once and for all,

  135. past, present, and future

  136. through the atoning death of Christ,

  137. even though we've been given new life

  138. and new hearts and eternal hope

  139. through his resurrection from the dead,

  140. every Christian still battles with remaining sin

  141. in their hearts.

  142. The power of sin is still prevalent

  143. and it will be throughout our earthly lives.

  144. Okay, so what's the answer?

  145. The stakes are high, right?

  146. I mean, consider again this process

  147. that James describes.

  148. First, there's the temptation,

  149. but then the temptation conceives

  150. and gives birth to sin

  151. and then sin becomes fully grown

  152. and brings forth death.

  153. At first, it's just a lingering thought

  154. or a desire.

  155. Then those thoughts or desires

  156. give birth to concrete words and actions.

  157. Then those actions become habits

  158. and deeply ingrained patterns of life.

  159. That's the process that James is describing, right?

  160. I mean, no one ever wakes up one day

  161. and just says out of the blue,

  162. you know what I'm going to do?

  163. I'm going to defraud people

  164. of millions of dollars today

  165. through fraudulent business practices.

  166. I just decided.

  167. It's a process that gets you there.

  168. No one just wakes up one day

  169. and says I'm going to be unfaithful to my spouse

  170. or I'm going to get trapped

  171. in alcohol and drug addiction

  172. or I'm going to be judgmental and unforgiving.

  173. That's not where it starts.

  174. It starts in the seemingly small place,

  175. in that small flash of self-centered desire

  176. that we call temptation.

  177. So what do we do?

  178. Well, Jesus tells us to pray,

  179. lead us not into temptation.

  180. Now notice that this first half of this prayer

  181. that Jesus gives us,

  182. it's preemptive.

  183. It's a prayer that is prayed

  184. when you're not necessarily feeling the tug

  185. and pull of selfish desire in the moment.

  186. It's preemptive.

  187. It's a prayer that's prayed

  188. when you aren't in the heat of battle.

  189. This is the prayer of wisdom.

  190. It prayed at the beginning of the day

  191. when you realize with clear eyes

  192. that your fallen nature,

  193. what the Bible calls the flesh,

  194. will at times want to turn towards temptation.

  195. It will want to give space

  196. to the pool or lure of pleasing ourselves.

  197. This is the prayer that says,

  198. Father, I'm not as strong as I think I am.

  199. And my greatest desire is to please You

  200. and live in the joy of following

  201. Your ways and Your words.

  202. Your words to me are life.

  203. Your laws are paths of increasing gladness.

  204. You have made me for Yourself.

  205. You made me for infinite joy in You.

  206. But I know that remaining sin in me

  207. will want to turn away.

  208. It will want to drink from broken cisterns

  209. that can't hold water.

  210. So, Father, today,

  211. lead me not into temptation.

  212. Guide my steps.

  213. Guide my thoughts.

  214. Guide my day.

  215. Keep me far from the lure

  216. of self-centeredness.

  217. I've been told that one of the paths

  218. that leads to the top of Mount Katahdin in Maine,

  219. which is the end of the Appalachian Trail,

  220. I've been told that one of the paths

  221. that leads to the top of that mountain

  222. has one stretch that gets extremely narrow

  223. called the Knife Edge Trail.

  224. And it can be as narrow as about four feet

  225. in some places.

  226. And some of the drop-offs in some places

  227. are as far as like 2,000 feet down.

  228. Now, if you were waking up

  229. on the morning of that hike

  230. and you were at base camp or wherever,

  231. your site,

  232. if you were waking up on the morning of that hike,

  233. before you got started

  234. and you thought to say a little prayer,

  235. what do you think it would be?

  236. Father, keep me on the path, right?

  237. Don't let me stumble.

  238. Let my steps be steady and sturdy

  239. and let me reach the summit.

  240. Brothers and sisters,

  241. there is a path we are on

  242. in the Christian life

  243. that leads to the most glorious

  244. peak of all.

  245. But there will be stretches of the trail

  246. where the drop-offs are steep

  247. and the danger will be great.

  248. And in order to get to where God wants to take us,

  249. it will at times be a very narrow path.

  250. So we must pray every day,

  251. Father, lead me not into temptation today.

  252. And friends, here's the good news.

  253. God has not left us alone on this journey.

  254. He has given us the Holy Spirit

  255. to dwell within us,

  256. to be our comfort,

  257. our guide,

  258. our counselor.

  259. God's own presence,

  260. the third person of the Trinity,

  261. the promise of the Father,

  262. sent from heaven

  263. by the ascended Jesus himself,

  264. the one who descended at Pentecost

  265. in wind and in fire,

  266. the Holy Spirit,

  267. Almighty God,

  268. he is with us.

  269. This prayer that Jesus instructs us to pray,

  270. lead us not into temptation,

  271. is a prayer that we might

  272. keep in step

  273. with the Holy Spirit,

  274. that we might be led by Him

  275. and His Word,

  276. that we might let Him reorder

  277. and redirect our desires

  278. to all that is pleasing to God.

  279. John Stott made this same observation

  280. about this part of the Lord's Prayer.

  281. As he kind of meditates

  282. on this section of the prayer,

  283. he notes that there's perhaps

  284. a deep Trinitarian pattern

  285. or logic

  286. to these last three petitions

  287. of the Lord's Prayer.

  288. He writes

  289. in his commentary

  290. on the Sermon on the Mount,

  291. he says,

  292. it's through the Father's creation

  293. and providence

  294. that we receive our daily bread.

  295. It is through the Son's atoning death

  296. that we may be forgiven.

  297. And it's through the Spirit's

  298. indwelling power

  299. that we're rescued from the evil one,

  300. that we're led not into temptation.

  301. So this prayer,

  302. Lead Us,

  303. is a prayer for God the Holy Spirit

  304. to do His work in us

  305. and to give us great confidence

  306. and great courage

  307. that we're not traversing

  308. the knife's edge alone.

  309. We have a guide who is sure

  310. and He can be trusted

  311. and He's given us His Word

  312. to guide us every step of the way.

  313. So friends,

  314. this is a prayer

  315. that we must pray every day.

  316. Lead us not into temptation.

  317. Holy Spirit,

  318. cause my heart

  319. to turn to You,

  320. to heed Your leading,

  321. to delight in what pleases You.

  322. Keep me far from grieving You,

  323. Holy Spirit.

  324. Keep me far from temptation today.

  325. And let me take up

  326. those means of grace

  327. whereby Your work increases

  328. in my life.

  329. Let me meditate on Your words.

  330. Let me confess my sins.

  331. Let me share my life

  332. with fellow brothers and sisters

  333. in Christ.

  334. Let me receive their help.

  335. Many of you can testify

  336. that it's been through,

  337. brothers and sisters,

  338. that you've found

  339. increasing freedom over sin.

  340. Let me rejoice

  341. in Your goodness today,

  342. Spirit.

  343. Let me use my gifts

  344. to serve You and my neighbor.

  345. forever.

  346. So we pray this prayer

  347. every day.

  348. We know we aren't strong enough

  349. to go through the battle alone.

  350. And God gives us ample help

  351. through His Holy Spirit.

  352. But you know,

  353. there will be days,

  354. even days when it seems like

  355. we've prayed this prayer,

  356. even days when we feel like

  357. we've felt the Holy Spirit's

  358. deep assurance,

  359. days when we're delighting

  360. in God's goodness.

  361. There will be days,

  362. even like that,

  363. when suddenly temptation comes.

  364. We'll find ourselves

  365. in the midst of trial.

  366. And it doesn't mean

  367. that God is unfaithful

  368. because God is able

  369. to use those moments

  370. as times of strengthening,

  371. times of growth.

  372. But for these moments

  373. in the battle,

  374. we need the second half

  375. of this petition

  376. of the Lord's Prayer.

  377. J.I. Packer again wrote,

  378. you know,

  379. when you're not conscious

  380. of temptation,

  381. pray,

  382. lead us not into temptation.

  383. When you are conscious of it,

  384. pray,

  385. deliver us from evil.

  386. So this is the second point

  387. that we'll consider.

  388. In the midst

  389. of temptation and trial,

  390. we pray,

  391. God,

  392. deliver us from evil.

  393. Notice how Jesus

  394. doesn't mince words here.

  395. He's very clear

  396. that there is such a thing

  397. as evil.

  398. In fact,

  399. the word evil

  400. could be translated

  401. the evil one,

  402. meaning Satan.

  403. Either way,

  404. no matter how we render

  405. the verse,

  406. Jesus is quite unapologetic

  407. that evil is real,

  408. that it exists in us

  409. as sinners,

  410. in a world that's fallen,

  411. and in the spiritual realm.

  412. As Christians,

  413. we will encounter that evil.

  414. And it won't just be

  415. kind of out there.

  416. It will also be in here.

  417. You know,

  418. you can't escape

  419. the fallenness

  420. of the world,

  421. right?

  422. You can go to the most

  423. remote location,

  424. surround yourself

  425. with only people

  426. who think and act

  427. exactly the same as you,

  428. try to build a community

  429. utterly away

  430. from the evil

  431. in the world,

  432. and you will find

  433. that it doesn't work

  434. because evil is at work

  435. in us

  436. just as strongly.

  437. So the answer

  438. isn't to try

  439. to just run away.

  440. Now, of course,

  441. we should certainly

  442. flee temptation, right?

  443. But if we're walking

  444. the path of Jesus' kingdom,

  445. if we're living

  446. into our vocation

  447. as His followers

  448. to be salt and light

  449. in the midst of the world,

  450. if we're bearing witness

  451. to Christ

  452. in all of creation,

  453. then we will encounter evil.

  454. We will come face to face

  455. with not just the brokenness

  456. and corruption

  457. outside of us,

  458. but also inside of us.

  459. So what do we do?

  460. Well, we pray,

  461. Father,

  462. deliver us from evil.

  463. Come to our rescue.

  464. Now, you might be thinking,

  465. wait, like, that's it?

  466. Right?

  467. In the face of evil,

  468. we just sort of pray,

  469. deliver us from evil, right?

  470. I mean, it kind of sounds

  471. a bit like underpowered,

  472. doesn't it?

  473. I mean, talk about, like,

  474. bringing a squirt gun

  475. into a forest fire, right?

  476. Like, we're just going to

  477. stand in the face of evil

  478. in us, outside of us,

  479. and just shoot up

  480. a little prayer.

  481. What good is a little prayer

  482. going to do in the face

  483. of the deep brokenness

  484. of the world?

  485. And yes, you know,

  486. on the one hand,

  487. praying this prayer

  488. isn't a kind of magic mantra

  489. that instantly makes things better.

  490. That's not what real prayer is.

  491. Real prayer isn't about

  492. just sort of saying

  493. the right thing

  494. at the right time

  495. so you can produce

  496. a desired outcome.

  497. It's not magic.

  498. So what is prayer?

  499. Prayer is communication

  500. with God.

  501. The triune God

  502. has revealed Himself

  503. as a speaking God.

  504. And this God

  505. has given to us humans

  506. the gift of language.

  507. Not just that we humans

  508. might communicate

  509. and commune with each other,

  510. but also that we might

  511. communicate and commune

  512. with God Himself.

  513. God has given us

  514. this medium

  515. whereby we can,

  516. in our creaturely way,

  517. commune intelligently,

  518. actually, wholly

  519. with our Creator.

  520. So this prayer

  521. in the face of evil,

  522. deliver us,

  523. is not just some sort of

  524. vague intention

  525. pushed out

  526. into a cold universe,

  527. right?

  528. Hoping that the universe

  529. will maybe right itself.

  530. No.

  531. We are praying

  532. to the only one

  533. who fully understands

  534. the battle

  535. that we are in.

  536. You see,

  537. friends,

  538. evil is so much greater

  539. than you or I

  540. could understand

  541. or experience.

  542. Like,

  543. we see our own

  544. little trials

  545. and temptations,

  546. or perhaps we see

  547. the brokenness

  548. and suffering

  549. of one part

  550. of creation,

  551. and at times

  552. it's very great.

  553. But the total impact

  554. of sin and evil,

  555. not just its personal dimension

  556. or its communal dimension,

  557. but also its cosmic dimension,

  558. there's only one

  559. who sees and understands

  560. the full scope

  561. of what sin and evil

  562. really are

  563. and really mean

  564. and really cost.

  565. You see,

  566. the one who teaches us

  567. this prayer

  568. is the one

  569. who actually entered

  570. into the battle

  571. with sin and evil

  572. in that total scale.

  573. He can tell us

  574. to pray to His heavenly Father,

  575. deliver us

  576. from the evil one,

  577. because His mission

  578. was to come

  579. and to win

  580. this decisive battle.

  581. Jesus Christ

  582. was the only one

  583. who went forth

  584. into battle

  585. with sin and evil

  586. in its total cosmic scale.

  587. And the cross

  588. and the empty grave

  589. are the battlefields

  590. of that greater warfare.

  591. You see,

  592. at the cross,

  593. sin and evil

  594. did its worst.

  595. It unleashed

  596. its full assault

  597. on God

  598. in the person

  599. of His Son.

  600. And in what seemed

  601. to be utter defeat

  602. at the cross,

  603. the greatest victory

  604. was won,

  605. because sin

  606. was exhausted there,

  607. and evil

  608. was decisively

  609. broken there.

  610. And the grave

  611. was emptied.

  612. Christ rose victorious

  613. over evil

  614. and sin

  615. and death.

  616. And when we pray,

  617. deliver us

  618. from evil,

  619. we aren't praying

  620. a wish

  621. or a hope,

  622. but a certain reality.

  623. Because Jesus Christ

  624. took on flesh,

  625. God came

  626. in human flesh,

  627. and conquered sin

  628. and Satan

  629. and the grave

  630. for us

  631. and for our freedom

  632. so that the tyranny

  633. of the evil one

  634. could be broken.

  635. Friends,

  636. evil is ultimately

  637. a defeated foe.

  638. Satan is a conquered rebel.

  639. Now,

  640. we look at the world

  641. and we look at our own hearts

  642. and we see that

  643. the enemies still rage.

  644. The battle skirmishes

  645. still go on,

  646. but their time is short.

  647. They still raise their fist

  648. against the crucified

  649. and risen King,

  650. but His victory is sure.

  651. deliver us

  652. from evil.

  653. Now,

  654. we might pray this prayer

  655. in the face

  656. of a personal struggle

  657. with sin or temptation.

  658. We might pray this prayer

  659. in the face

  660. of broader patterns

  661. of unrighteousness

  662. and injustice

  663. in the world.

  664. We might pray this prayer

  665. in the face

  666. of spiritual conflict

  667. with Satan's work

  668. of lies and deception.

  669. Whatever it might be,

  670. we pray with confidence

  671. that Jesus Christ

  672. has triumphed.

  673. From the moment we cry,

  674. deliver us,

  675. God's rescue operation

  676. begins to apply itself

  677. and carry on its good work.

  678. help will be on the way

  679. to cope and respond

  680. with whatever form

  681. of evil threatens us.

  682. And His promise is sure.

  683. One day,

  684. death will be no more.

  685. One day,

  686. Jesus will return in glory

  687. and every enemy

  688. will be put under His feet.

  689. The tyranny of evil

  690. will be vanquished

  691. once and for all

  692. from God's good creation.

  693. And God will be all in all.

  694. So when we pray,

  695. deliver us from the evil one,

  696. we're praying that prayer

  697. in the midst of deep

  698. gospel hope

  699. that the cause is not lost

  700. but it is a certain victory.

  701. And one day,

  702. the earth will be full

  703. of God's glory

  704. like the waters cover the sea.

  705. Let's pray together.

  706. Jesus,

  707. Jesus,

  708. Lord,

  709. King,

  710. Redeemer,

  711. we look to You

  712. and we admit

  713. that apart from You

  714. we would be helpless

  715. in the fight.

  716. We are weak.

  717. We are prone to wander.

  718. We love ourselves

  719. and our own pleasures

  720. more than You.

  721. We turn a blind eye

  722. to evil,

  723. even delighting in it.

  724. We are sinners

  725. and we deserve

  726. nothing from You

  727. but condemnation.

  728. But You have conquered.

  729. On our behalf,

  730. You died

  731. and You rose again.

  732. And now for all

  733. who experience

  734. Your gifts of repentance

  735. and faith,

  736. You freely forgive our sins

  737. and give us new hearts.

  738. thank You for this indescribable grace

  739. that flows from Your mercy

  740. and Your love for us.

  741. And so,

  742. would we take up each day

  743. this prayer

  744. and pray,

  745. lead us not into temptation.

  746. Help us to live lives

  747. that are wholly pleasing to You.

  748. Give us a taste for holiness

  749. that is unshakable.

  750. Help us to love

  751. more and more

  752. the joy of obedience.

  753. And would we also pray,

  754. deliver us from evil,

  755. trusting that Your victory

  756. is complete

  757. and that Your kingdom

  758. is advancing

  759. and the gates of hell

  760. cannot stand against us.

  761. Deliver us, Lord.

  762. Come, Lord Jesus.

  763. Amen.
