  1. We are recording.

  2. So last week, so last week we did the beginning of Genesis.

  3. We got all the way to creation and did not finish what I could have said about creation.

  4. So it's, there's so much, so much.

  5. I could have done five weeks on Genesis for sure,

  6. because I have an outline here that does not finish Genesis by any stretch.

  7. So I'm okay with that, because what I hope to do here is point us in a direction of a way to read Genesis

  8. and the other books of really the whole Bible, but especially the Old Testament, the foundational truths.

  9. That's what I'm trying to pull out is some foundational big ideas.

  10. And I can't pull them all out, because there are a lot of them.

  11. But what I hope to do is sort of model a way of looking at Scripture to help us think that way.

  12. So I'm a person who thinks details and events and this narrative portion, you know, this, the story of Noah and the flood.

  13. You know, and I think about that pretty contained.

  14. Like I do think about, well, what does it show us about Christ?

  15. What is it?

  16. What is it?

  17. How does it point to Christ?

  18. How does it?

  19. You know, I think about some of those things.

  20. But what are the big ideas that undergird all of what we believe?

  21. And without which our neighbors, who increasingly don't have this foundation, our neighbors are thinking really differently from the way we are.

  22. I forget if I said this last week, but I have an aunt who's, she's in her 80s.

  23. She's very much a child of the 60s and the sexual revolution and all of this.

  24. Very bright, very interesting, very curious, really a wonderful, warm person.

  25. But we've had conversations, and I've realized we are on a different planet.

  26. Like the way she thinks about God is not as a personal God at all.

  27. Like that's sort of where I start.

  28. I've been a Christian for a long time, so this is what's in my head.

  29. And even as a child in a non-Christian home, the idea was that God was a personal God that you could like pray to.

  30. There was not a real faith in that God, but that's what I was taught as a child to the extent I was taught anything.

  31. But so anyway, the world has changed.

  32. And so that's what I want to look at.

  33. So it's okay with me if we don't hit everything because, you know, you can go back and read Genesis and begin thinking about, for instance, we're not going to get to Abraham for Pete 6.

  34. You know, the outline goes through Noah, and I may mention some other things a little bit about Babel and Abraham.

  35. But, you know, there are things all the way through.

  36. So as you read, not just Genesis, but whatever you're reading, I just want to encourage you to say, so what?

  37. Like, okay, this happened.

  38. So what?

  39. What does this tell us about who we are, who God is, how the world works, the givens that God has built into creation because he is the creator?

  40. So this week we're going to start with the fall, which is another, you know, big one.

  41. So the account is in Genesis 3.

  42. And I'm not going to read the whole thing.

  43. But let me just read some of it.

  44. So in Genesis 3, it begins,

  45. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  46. He said to the woman,

  47. Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  48. And the woman said to the serpent,

  49. We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden.

  50. But God said,

  51. You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden.

  52. Neither shall you touch it, lest you die.

  53. But the serpent said to the woman,

  54. You shall not surely die.

  55. For God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened.

  56. And you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  57. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,

  58. and that it was a delight to the eyes,

  59. and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,

  60. she took of its fruit and ate.

  61. And she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.

  62. Then the eyes of both were opened,

  63. and they knew that they were naked.

  64. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

  65. And if you are familiar with this story,

  66. which I gather many of you are,

  67. we see how this eventually works out.

  68. And this disobedience is a big deal.

  69. So I want to first talk about,

  70. what did we learn about sin in this passage?

  71. This is the beginning of sin, right?

  72. And I want to look at Eve and what's going on in her head, right?

  73. We don't know exactly,

  74. but we know that Eve knows the command not to eat of the fruit.

  75. It seems pretty clear.

  76. She kind of expands on it by saying,

  77. neither shall you touch it,

  78. which we have no record of God actually saying.

  79. So she's allowed a little more law to get in there.

  80. But she knows she's not supposed to eat of the tree.

  81. That's clear.

  82. But she listens to the serpent.

  83. She gives him an audience.

  84. Might have been wiser not to engage

  85. once she realized he was going to call God into question,

  86. which is what he does.

  87. He talks in these sort of half-truths, right?

  88. He said, you will not surely die.

  89. Now, that's an outright lie.

  90. They don't die immediately,

  91. and the death that they die

  92. is a bigger death than just a physical death.

  93. As we recognize it,

  94. it results in much more

  95. than just their physical death,

  96. which does come.

  97. So that's a lie,

  98. the serpent says.

  99. And then he says,

  100. for God knows that when you eat of it,

  101. your eyes will be opened,

  102. and you will be like God,

  103. knowing good and evil.

  104. So then she looks at the tree.

  105. Oh, it looks really good.

  106. Like, that looks good.

  107. And it sounds like,

  108. I mean, the serpent is saying,

  109. God doesn't really have your best interests at heart.

  110. God's really holding out on you.

  111. Well, I wonder if that's true.

  112. So she's weighing these things.

  113. And even in weighing those things

  114. and wondering if what God says is true,

  115. she's put herself in the place of judge

  116. over what is right and wrong, right?

  117. So she listens to the serpent.

  118. She's listened to God.

  119. And she's like, okay,

  120. what do I choose?

  121. And that what do I choose

  122. is her expressing her autonomy

  123. and her,

  124. I get to decide, right?

  125. And deciding what is good

  126. and what is evil

  127. apart from what God has said.

  128. So the essence of sin,

  129. as we see it here

  130. and we see it throughout scripture,

  131. this is just a broad,

  132. there are many ways to talk about sin,

  133. but it's autonomy.

  134. It's autonomy that I can decide,

  135. I can decide good and evil.

  136. I can be the judge

  137. over what is right and wrong,

  138. what's right for me,

  139. what's going to be better for me,

  140. what's more desirable,

  141. what do I want?

  142. And it's not that we don't have

  143. choices and options under God.

  144. We absolutely do.

  145. But the rational approach, right,

  146. is to trust that God,

  147. who created the world,

  148. he actually knows better than I do

  149. what is right and what is wrong,

  150. what is good and what is evil,

  151. what is going to be better for me.

  152. And she thinks the fruit

  153. is going to be better.

  154. And she chooses that.

  155. So she takes over the role

  156. of God in her life, right?

  157. She has decided the law for her.

  158. And we do this every time we sin, right?

  159. We weigh the options.

  160. Sometimes that happens really fast, right?

  161. We're not always deliberating

  162. over whether we're going to

  163. snap at our spouse, right?

  164. We don't give it a lot of thought always,

  165. which is the problem.

  166. But every time we choose

  167. to disobey God,

  168. we're taking on that position of

  169. I get to decide what's right

  170. and what's wrong.

  171. And this is what I'm going to do

  172. because it seems better to me.

  173. So that's really the essence of sin.

  174. And as it enters the world,

  175. and if we look around now,

  176. and this has been true throughout history

  177. since the fall,

  178. which affected all of us,

  179. which resulted in an inability

  180. to always choose the good,

  181. which Eve had.

  182. She had an ability

  183. to say no to the serpent.

  184. And Christ restores that to us, right?

  185. When he chooses us

  186. and gives us grace

  187. and he puts his spirit in us,

  188. we are able to say no to sin.

  189. We will never do it perfectly.

  190. But that faculty of choosing the good

  191. is restored to us.

  192. But throughout history,

  193. apart from Christ,

  194. we see autonomy is like the thing.

  195. And it becomes more and more evident

  196. as you proceed through history.

  197. So people in ancient days

  198. didn't have a lot of choices.

  199. They still could sin or not.

  200. But autonomy wasn't all,

  201. that wasn't all their world.

  202. But in many ways,

  203. it is all our world in the West.

  204. Autonomy is the expectation

  205. everywhere we look in our culture.

  206. And it's not rational

  207. any more than it was for Eve, right?

  208. If God created the earth,

  209. which again,

  210. that's a big if for most of,

  211. you know, most,

  212. many of our neighbors,

  213. if God created the world,

  214. he probably knows better than I do.

  215. Remember,

  216. we talked about the

  217. creator-creature distinction

  218. and how God is outside creation

  219. and we are inside it.

  220. So our perspective,

  221. we only have,

  222. if we ignore God,

  223. we can only judge by what's around us.

  224. And that's not gonna,

  225. that doesn't provide enough information.

  226. But God,

  227. God offers it.

  228. So our society assumes

  229. that autonomy and choice

  230. are necessarily,

  231. and of themselves,

  232. both possible

  233. and the ultimate good.

  234. Right?

  235. If you look around,

  236. what,

  237. what do we think of

  238. when we think of freedom?

  239. We think the ability to do

  240. pursuit of happiness,

  241. to pursue these goods

  242. in our lives?

  243. Sorry.

  244. The biblical view

  245. is that

  246. autonomy,

  247. and this is a quotation,

  248. autonomy,

  249. understood in the sense

  250. of being independent

  251. from God

  252. in our judgments

  253. and evaluations,

  254. is metaphysically impossible

  255. and relationally destructive.

  256. So we really cannot be

  257. independent of God

  258. because we are created beings.

  259. We are finite.

  260. We're subject to God.

  261. He created us.

  262. He can,

  263. he sustains us.

  264. He gives us breath.

  265. We are not independent.

  266. We cannot exist independently,

  267. whether we acknowledge it or not.

  268. And as I said,

  269. after the fall,

  270. we have the added corruption

  271. of what sin does

  272. to our minds

  273. and our wills

  274. and the way it turns us

  275. into ourselves.

  276. The result

  277. of this autonomy,

  278. of this sin,

  279. rejecting God

  280. and pretending we are God,

  281. is alienation.

  282. And you can see

  283. all kinds of alienation

  284. throughout

  285. as then God

  286. unveils

  287. the curses

  288. and the results

  289. of their sin

  290. in the rest of chapter 3.

  291. We're alienated from God.

  292. We're alienated

  293. from one another.

  294. You see the immediate

  295. blame game

  296. that goes on

  297. between Adam and Eve

  298. and the serpent.

  299. We're alienated

  300. from our bodies.

  301. Like they're suddenly

  302. super uncomfortable

  303. that they're naked

  304. and they need to

  305. cover it.

  306. They're shamed.

  307. We're alienated

  308. from the rest of creation.

  309. All of creation

  310. is affected

  311. by our sin

  312. and the fall.

  313. All of creation

  314. has been unsettled

  315. and is corrupt.

  316. Not necessarily,

  317. thoroughly,

  318. none of these,

  319. like this corruption,

  320. none of it is so much

  321. that God's good creation

  322. isn't evident

  323. and that there aren't

  324. good things in creation

  325. or that our being created

  326. in the image of God

  327. doesn't go away.

  328. We are still created

  329. in the image of God

  330. but we're warped

  331. and twisted

  332. and the creation,

  333. too,

  334. is likewise

  335. warped and twisted.

  336. It's not what it should be.

  337. So that idea

  338. of what is now

  339. is neither what it always was

  340. nor what it was meant to be.

  341. So God created it.

  342. Remember last week,

  343. God created it good

  344. and he said,

  345. this is good.

  346. And then the fall

  347. and it's not good.

  348. But that implies,

  349. you know,

  350. what it says is that

  351. there was a really good time.

  352. It was created good.

  353. Eden was real

  354. and beautiful

  355. and a place of abundance

  356. and blessing.

  357. Something happened

  358. and we know it as

  359. sin entered the world

  360. and now the world

  361. is not so good.

  362. We see goodness,

  363. but we also see evil.

  364. We see cruelty.

  365. There's murder

  366. within the first few chapters

  367. of Genesis.

  368. The world is not

  369. as it should be.

  370. And I think,

  371. I think we all,

  372. Christian and non-Christian alike,

  373. sense that.

  374. Like, this isn't,

  375. we're not really supposed to be,

  376. you know,

  377. embroiled in war

  378. and embroiled in

  379. fierce arguments

  380. with one another

  381. and hating each other

  382. and we know racism is not,

  383. that's not ideal

  384. and we know,

  385. so, you know,

  386. even apart from Christ,

  387. we recognize that

  388. this is not,

  389. this is not what it should be.

  390. But where do we get that sense?

  391. Like, why,

  392. why do we think that?

  393. And it's only because

  394. it once was

  395. as it should be.

  396. And that echo

  397. of Eden,

  398. you know,

  399. sort of,

  400. it,

  401. it,

  402. it affects our hearts.

  403. It affects even non-Christians

  404. who don't believe

  405. in Eden

  406. and don't believe

  407. in a fall.

  408. so for,

  409. for many non-Christians,

  410. history is,

  411. it's just always

  412. what we know now.

  413. That's all it was

  414. and that's all

  415. it's ever going to be.

  416. So,

  417. that's a really

  418. different viewpoint

  419. from,

  420. from what the Bible

  421. lays out for us,

  422. which is,

  423. first,

  424. that there was a beginning,

  425. as we talked about

  426. last week,

  427. there was a beginning

  428. to history,

  429. which implies an end.

  430. it began good

  431. and full of blessing

  432. and abundance

  433. and love

  434. and sweetness,

  435. but something happened.

  436. So now what we have

  437. is not what it was meant to be,

  438. is not what it was,

  439. and

  440. we don't see this,

  441. well,

  442. we see it,

  443. we see it,

  444. the very beginnings of it

  445. in Genesis 3, 15,

  446. there will be something different.

  447. Something different is coming.

  448. if we think about

  449. the world,

  450. if the world was always

  451. riddled with sin,

  452. cruelty,

  453. hardship,

  454. death-dealing,

  455. tornadoes,

  456. and all the rest,

  457. we can opt

  458. for

  459. despair,

  460. like this is what it is,

  461. man,

  462. life is rough,

  463. and this is what we got,

  464. and

  465. let's make the best of it,

  466. or not,

  467. or let's give up,

  468. or whatever,

  469. you know,

  470. there's

  471. many philosophies

  472. that are within that,

  473. and that,

  474. you know,

  475. nihilism,

  476. or existentialism,

  477. these all

  478. result from that view

  479. that this is what it is,

  480. and this is what it's going to be,

  481. or

  482. in many periods of history,

  483. and many,

  484. you know,

  485. people throughout history

  486. have taken a more utopian view,

  487. like,

  488. we can make it better.

  489. we can,

  490. as people evolve,

  491. and get smarter,

  492. and our technology improves,

  493. and

  494. we learn to love one another,

  495. we can make it

  496. what it should be,

  497. right?

  498. But that's not true either,

  499. because of the way we're bound in sin,

  500. and we're not,

  501. we're not God.

  502. Only God,

  503. who is outside of creation,

  504. can change the trajectory.

  505. history.

  506. We have had

  507. millennia

  508. to do that,

  509. and we have never done it,

  510. right?

  511. And I don't feel like anyone

  512. can look around the world today

  513. and say,

  514. we're almost there,

  515. right?

  516. I mean,

  517. we're not saying that.

  518. There was a period in history

  519. before World War I,

  520. there were a lot of people

  521. who said,

  522. we're almost there,

  523. look at us,

  524. look at what we're doing,

  525. look at the technologies

  526. we're developing,

  527. and

  528. we're gonna,

  529. you know,

  530. we're gonna apply science

  531. and reason,

  532. and we're gonna make

  533. the world beautiful.

  534. And then World War I came,

  535. and this

  536. utter,

  537. senseless carnage

  538. of World War I

  539. disillusioned a lot of people,

  540. and it was followed

  541. not that long

  542. after

  543. by

  544. the Depression

  545. and World War II,

  546. and like,

  547. where's the hope?

  548. Like,

  549. that does not look good.

  550. These,

  551. these two

  552. cataclysmic

  553. conflicts

  554. in the,

  555. in the 20th century,

  556. in the first half

  557. of the 20th century,

  558. took the wind

  559. out of the sails

  560. of a lot of

  561. utopians.

  562. But there's still

  563. that temptation.

  564. We desire to,

  565. to see it get better.

  566. We look at,

  567. oh,

  568. maybe AI will save us.

  569. You know,

  570. maybe,

  571. you know,

  572. maybe that will,

  573. maybe that's the key,

  574. you know,

  575. to making the world

  576. a better place

  577. and loving each other

  578. and,

  579. and ending war

  580. and violence

  581. and all of this.

  582. The other dimension,

  583. which I briefly mentioned,

  584. the Bible adds,

  585. so,

  586. the narrative tells us

  587. that something happened

  588. that destroyed something good

  589. or that marred something good,

  590. and something's going to happen.

  591. So,

  592. in Genesis 3,

  593. chapter 15,

  594. the Lord is speaking

  595. to the serpent,

  596. and he curses him,

  597. and in verse 15,

  598. he says,

  599. I will put enmity

  600. between you

  601. and the woman

  602. and between your offspring

  603. and her offspring.

  604. He shall bruise your head

  605. and you shall bruise his heel.

  606. Which would you rather have bruised,

  607. your head or your heel?

  608. Who's going to win this battle?

  609. We know.

  610. We know.

  611. There's,

  612. like,

  613. we know.

  614. We know for real.

  615. But this is a promise

  616. embedded right here

  617. at the very beginning,

  618. right here

  619. in whatever it is,

  620. hours after the first sin.

  621. God makes a promise

  622. that,

  623. serpent,

  624. you are not going to survive this.

  625. But,

  626. the,

  627. by humanity,

  628. the offspring of the woman

  629. will survive

  630. and will triumph

  631. over you.

  632. So,

  633. this promise

  634. way back here

  635. in Genesis

  636. is the first

  637. of many subsequent promises,

  638. as we know,

  639. of an ultimate victory

  640. and

  641. something different,

  642. not more of the same.

  643. Promises of a future

  644. and a hope

  645. abound throughout the Bible.

  646. I think we know this.

  647. But,

  648. at first,

  649. they seem to be

  650. in the near future.

  651. there are short,

  652. what seem to be

  653. short-term promises.

  654. Even the promise

  655. to Abraham

  656. will be fulfilled

  657. over generations.

  658. But it seems

  659. kind of localized.

  660. It seems specific

  661. to Abraham

  662. and his offspring,

  663. his children.

  664. And it is

  665. in many ways.

  666. But it's also

  667. pointing forward

  668. to what we know

  669. as the coming of Christ,

  670. the redemption

  671. from sin

  672. and eventually

  673. the new heavens

  674. and the new earth

  675. where righteousness dwells.

  676. That will be,

  677. that's coming.

  678. That's coming.

  679. Now,

  680. we don't have to

  681. bring it about.

  682. The utopian

  683. wants to,

  684. you know,

  685. apply

  686. reason

  687. and science

  688. and

  689. technology

  690. and all this

  691. to bring it about.

  692. And

  693. it's not wrong

  694. to apply reason

  695. and science

  696. and technology

  697. to improve

  698. people's lives.

  699. That's a good thing.

  700. But to hope

  701. that that is going

  702. to be the answer

  703. is foolishness.

  704. It's not going

  705. to be the answer.

  706. God is going

  707. to bring about

  708. the new heavens

  709. and the new earth.

  710. And he planned it

  711. way back here.

  712. He actually planned it

  713. before the foundation

  714. of the earth.

  715. Right?

  716. But here's the first hint

  717. and it's right after

  718. the fall.

  719. the plan of God

  720. for redemption

  721. is first promised

  722. immediately after the fall

  723. but the promises

  724. multiply

  725. and widen

  726. in application

  727. up to and through

  728. the incarnation

  729. of Christ.

  730. And in the New Testament

  731. we have promises

  732. of a new heaven

  733. and a new earth

  734. where righteousness dwells.

  735. The Bible

  736. gives us

  737. perspective

  738. on the world

  739. we live in

  740. that the world

  741. doesn't naturally have.

  742. Right?

  743. We have the perspective

  744. in the narrative

  745. of scripture

  746. laid down in Genesis

  747. that what God created

  748. was good

  749. was very good.

  750. And something happened.

  751. Humanity

  752. brought sin

  753. into the world

  754. with the help

  755. of the serpent.

  756. And

  757. that messed

  758. everything up.

  759. but

  760. there's a promise

  761. here

  762. that points

  763. to a future

  764. where everything

  765. will not still

  766. be messed up.

  767. Everything messed up

  768. will be cleaned up.

  769. That's the promise

  770. of scripture.

  771. So as we talk

  772. with our neighbors

  773. I think we need

  774. to remember

  775. that the reality

  776. of the fall

  777. is really good news

  778. in a broken world.

  779. This is good news.

  780. It means

  781. this is not

  782. how it was meant to be.

  783. This is not

  784. how it should be.

  785. This is not

  786. this is not

  787. part of the design.

  788. We're not stuck

  789. with this

  790. necessarily.

  791. Right?

  792. It's

  793. something happened.

  794. So how do we

  795. get back

  796. to Eden

  797. or how do we

  798. as the Bible

  799. tells us

  800. move forward

  801. into something

  802. even better

  803. than Eden?

  804. But often

  805. you know

  806. our

  807. we talk about

  808. the fall

  809. in the church

  810. but out there

  811. they're not

  812. talking about

  813. the fall.

  814. Like they're

  815. recognizing evil

  816. and awfulness

  817. and all of that

  818. but they don't

  819. realize

  820. they don't really

  821. stay conscious

  822. of if they

  823. have it in their

  824. heads at all.

  825. It wasn't always

  826. like this

  827. and it will not

  828. always be like this.

  829. So this is

  830. this is hope.

  831. This is our hope

  832. as believers.

  833. This is the hope

  834. of the scripture

  835. way back here

  836. in Genesis.

  837. God has something

  838. better in mind

  839. than even Eden

  840. and the sin

  841. of Adam and Eve

  842. and the sins

  843. of so many

  844. throughout millennia

  845. will not thwart

  846. God's plan.

  847. God is going

  848. to bring about

  849. something really

  850. good.

  851. The fall

  852. points us

  853. to hope

  854. and it is a

  855. belief more

  856. and more foreign

  857. to our neighbors.

  858. Evil is not

  859. original

  860. and it will

  861. not last.

  862. So that's

  863. good news.

  864. Right?

  865. That's good news.

  866. And as we

  867. talk to

  868. people around

  869. us

  870. who don't

  871. have this

  872. foundation

  873. and who

  874. don't see

  875. like just

  876. the idea

  877. is like

  878. will someone

  879. sinned back

  880. there in a

  881. garden

  882. and what

  883. I suffer

  884. for it

  885. like what

  886. the heck

  887. you know

  888. there's all

  889. kinds of

  890. like it

  891. doesn't make

  892. sense

  893. and it

  894. doesn't

  895. sound like

  896. good news

  897. right?

  898. But if we

  899. put it in

  900. the context

  901. of God's

  902. big story

  903. it's really

  904. good news

  905. that there

  906. was a fall.

  907. Now

  908. obviously

  909. there are

  910. ways in

  911. which it's

  912. not good

  913. news

  914. but

  915. essentially

  916. that's what

  917. it is

  918. and it

  919. points

  920. just like

  921. the beginning

  922. of the

  923. world

  924. and creation

  925. in the

  926. beginning

  927. God

  928. created

  929. the heavens

  930. and the

  931. earth

  932. points to

  933. an end

  934. when the

  935. history as

  936. we know

  937. it will

  938. come to

  939. an end

  940. so does

  941. the fall

  942. and in

  943. the way

  944. it's

  945. presented

  946. in Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  947. chapter 3

  948. point us

  949. to

  950. something

  951. different

  952. that's

  953. going to

  954. be way

  955. way better.

  956. So any

  957. questions or

  958. comments on

  959. that?

  960. I've read

  961. how the

  962. perception

  963. that most

  964. people seem

  965. to have

  966. about

  967. there's so

  968. much that's

  969. good about

  970. the world

  971. and that

  972. there's so

  973. much that's

  974. bad about

  975. the world

  976. can

  977. provide

  978. an opening

  979. to the

  980. gospel

  981. as you

  982. just pointed

  983. out.

  984. There is

  985. this

  986. tension

  987. or

  988. paradox

  989. as we

  990. look around

  991. this

  992. and

  993. well

  994. might I

  995. share with

  996. you

  997. what the

  998. biblical

  999. perspective

  1000. is or

  1001. what Jesus'

  1002. perspective

  1003. is on

  1004. why do

  1005. we have

  1006. that?

  1007. Yep.

  1008. Yep.

  1009. Or like

  1010. why do we

  1011. have these

  1012. good things?

  1013. Why are

  1014. these absolutely

  1015. wonderful

  1016. things built

  1017. into our

  1018. creation?

  1019. Not just

  1020. the physical

  1021. wonders

  1022. which are

  1023. stunning and

  1024. amazing

  1025. but love

  1026. between a

  1027. husband and

  1028. a wife.

  1029. The joy

  1030. of raising

  1031. children,

  1032. the joy

  1033. of

  1034. a good

  1035. conversation,

  1036. the joy

  1037. of hanging

  1038. out with

  1039. friends and

  1040. laughing.

  1041. All these

  1042. joys,

  1043. they're only

  1044. there because

  1045. God put

  1046. them there,

  1047. right?

  1048. And

  1049. why would

  1050. that evolve

  1051. out of

  1052. sort of

  1053. nothing?

  1054. Why would

  1055. that just

  1056. come about

  1057. any more

  1058. than why

  1059. would there

  1060. be so

  1061. much evil?

  1062. Like apart

  1063. from the

  1064. story of

  1065. scripture,

  1066. the story

  1067. the Bible

  1068. tells,

  1069. we don't

  1070. have reasons

  1071. for any

  1072. of this

  1073. stuff.

  1074. So,

  1075. yeah,

  1076. thanks.

  1077. Yeah?

  1078. It just

  1079. seems like

  1080. in the world

  1081. people that

  1082. really don't

  1083. really know

  1084. about the

  1085. Bible and

  1086. God stuff,

  1087. they think

  1088. it's like

  1089. a fantasy

  1090. type God

  1091. or a

  1092. kind of

  1093. storytelling

  1094. thing,

  1095. but if

  1096. you look

  1097. at,

  1098. if you

  1099. read the

  1100. Bible and

  1101. you look

  1102. at what

  1103. story is

  1104. the Bible,

  1105. you realize

  1106. how much

  1107. God really

  1108. feels in

  1109. reality.

  1110. Yeah.

  1111. Yeah.

  1112. Yeah,

  1113. it's a great

  1114. point.

  1115. Yep.

  1116. Yep.

  1117. All right,

  1118. so let's

  1119. move on.

  1120. We're going

  1121. to look at

  1122. Noah and

  1123. the flood.

  1124. And again,

  1125. I'm not going

  1126. to read the

  1127. whole story.

  1128. I'm going

  1129. to assume

  1130. some of

  1131. that's

  1132. in your

  1133. heads,

  1134. but I

  1135. want to

  1136. read

  1137. Genesis

    Genesis 6:5–7

  1138. chapter 6

  1139. verses 5

  1140. through 7.

  1141. The Lord

  1142. saw that

  1143. the wickedness

  1144. of man

  1145. was great

  1146. in the

  1147. earth,

  1148. and that

  1149. every

  1150. intention

  1151. of the

  1152. thoughts

  1153. of his

  1154. heart

  1155. was only

  1156. evil

  1157. continually.

  1158. And the

  1159. Lord

  1160. regretted

  1161. that he

  1162. had made

  1163. man on

  1164. the earth

  1165. and it

  1166. grieved

  1167. him to

  1168. his heart.

  1169. So the

  1170. Lord

  1171. said,

  1172. I will

  1173. blot out

  1174. man whom

  1175. I have

  1176. created

  1177. from the

  1178. face of

  1179. the land,

  1180. man and

  1181. animals and

  1182. creeping things

  1183. and birds

  1184. of the

  1185. heavens,

  1186. for I'm

  1187. sorry that

  1188. I have

  1189. made them.

  1190. But Noah

  1191. found favor

  1192. in the

  1193. eyes of

  1194. the Lord.

  1195. So,

  1196. let's

  1197. see.

  1198. so that's

  1199. how this

  1200. account

  1201. begins,

  1202. right?

  1203. God

  1204. looks at

  1205. the earth

  1206. and wow,

  1207. it is

  1208. really a

  1209. mess,

  1210. right?

  1211. I mean,

  1212. he doesn't

  1213. pull any

  1214. punches,

  1215. like every

  1216. intention of

  1217. the thoughts

  1218. of his

  1219. heart was

  1220. only evil

  1221. continually.

  1222. And it

  1223. just like,

  1224. yeah,

  1225. I mean,

  1226. it's a,

  1227. it's a

  1228. jarring

  1229. indictment

  1230. of what

  1231. humanity

  1232. has become,

  1233. right?

  1234. But then

  1235. this,

  1236. this striking

  1237. verse 8

  1238. there,

  1239. Noah found

  1240. favor in

  1241. the eyes

  1242. of the

  1243. Lord.

  1244. Now,

  1245. what is

  1246. that about?

  1247. Was Noah

  1248. such a

  1249. good guy

  1250. that God

  1251. just couldn't

  1252. resist?

  1253. Well,

  1254. I gotta save

  1255. him because

  1256. he's really

  1257. good.

  1258. He's the

  1259. one who's

  1260. really righteous

  1261. and all the

  1262. rest are

  1263. losers,

  1264. right?

  1265. But if

  1266. you read

  1267. it in the

  1268. context of

  1269. the account

  1270. and all

  1271. of scripture,

  1272. we recognize

  1273. that's not

  1274. how God

  1275. ever works.

  1276. He never

  1277. looks at

  1278. someone and

  1279. says,

  1280. you're who I

  1281. need because

  1282. you are

  1283. really good

  1284. or you're,

  1285. you have,

  1286. you have

  1287. what we

  1288. need here,

  1289. you need

  1290. to be the

  1291. leader,

  1292. right?

  1293. That's not

  1294. how he goes

  1295. about choosing

  1296. anyone in

  1297. scripture.

  1298. So why

  1299. would that

  1300. be true

  1301. here with

  1302. Noah?

  1303. Noah found

  1304. favor in

  1305. the eyes

  1306. of the

  1307. Lord,

  1308. and when

  1309. we read

  1310. verse 9,

  1311. the very

  1312. next verse,

  1313. these are

  1314. the generations

  1315. of Noah.

  1316. Noah was

  1317. a righteous

  1318. man,

  1319. blameless

  1320. in his

  1321. generation.

  1322. Noah walked

  1323. with God.

  1324. So first,

  1325. we have

  1326. this

  1327. word that

  1328. says,

  1329. God

  1330. looked on

  1331. Noah with

  1332. favor,

  1333. right?

  1334. It's basically

  1335. what he

  1336. said,

  1337. or grace

  1338. is another

  1339. way to

  1340. look at

  1341. that word

  1342. favor,

  1343. right?

  1344. Noah found

  1345. favor or

  1346. grace in

  1347. the eyes

  1348. of the

  1349. Lord,

  1350. and only

  1351. then do

  1352. we hear

  1353. that Noah

  1354. was a

  1355. righteous

  1356. man.

  1357. God

  1358. chooses

  1359. unrighteous

  1360. people,

  1361. because that's

  1362. all he's

  1363. got to

  1364. choose from,

  1365. right?

  1366. We're all

  1367. unrighteous

  1368. in this

  1369. generation

  1370. of Noah's

  1371. generation,

  1372. all the

  1373. thoughts

  1374. and intentions

  1375. of their

  1376. hearts

  1377. were only

  1378. evil

  1379. continually.

  1380. God

  1381. chooses

  1382. Noah.

  1383. Well,

  1384. why?

  1385. Well,

  1386. we don't

  1387. know.

  1388. That's hidden

  1389. in the mind

  1390. of God.

  1391. But I think

  1392. we can be

  1393. pretty confident

  1394. that it wasn't

  1395. because Noah

  1396. was such a

  1397. good guy,

  1398. because that's

  1399. never the way

  1400. it works

  1401. in Scripture.

  1402. God chooses

  1403. sinners.

  1404. He chooses

  1405. people who

  1406. are fallen

  1407. and broken

  1408. and sinful,

  1409. who are

  1410. rebellious.

  1411. This is who

  1412. he chooses.

  1413. And then

  1414. what happens

  1415. is,

  1416. the pattern

  1417. of Scripture,

  1418. the chosen

  1419. person,

  1420. right,

  1421. in this case

  1422. Noah,

  1423. responds to

  1424. God,

  1425. enabled by

  1426. God to

  1427. respond,

  1428. responds in

  1429. faith and

  1430. obedience.

  1431. God

  1432. so,

  1433. right here

  1434. in the story

  1435. of Noah,

  1436. we have

  1437. the reminder

  1438. or the,

  1439. like,

  1440. it's one

  1441. of the first

  1442. accounts where

  1443. we see

  1444. God's grace.

  1445. Now,

  1446. we've seen

  1447. it in Adam

  1448. and Eve

  1449. for sure.

  1450. He could

  1451. have just

  1452. wiped them

  1453. out and

  1454. just stopped

  1455. right there,

  1456. but God

  1457. did not,

  1458. and he

  1459. continues

  1460. his intention

  1461. for the

  1462. earth and

  1463. his creation.

  1464. and here

  1465. in Noah,

  1466. we see it

  1467. again.

  1468. Noah found

  1469. favor or

  1470. grace.

  1471. Noah was

  1472. righteous,

  1473. but the

  1474. order is

  1475. important.

  1476. The pattern

  1477. throughout the

  1478. Bible is

  1479. that God

  1480. chooses a

  1481. person and

  1482. that person

  1483. trusts and

  1484. obeys God

  1485. in consequence,

  1486. not the

  1487. other way

  1488. around.

  1489. God's

  1490. dealings with

  1491. Noah

  1492. reverse the

  1493. performance

  1494. leads to

  1495. reward,

  1496. dynamic,

  1497. to one of

  1498. blessing leads

  1499. to response.

  1500. God does

  1501. not wait

  1502. until Noah

  1503. comes up to

  1504. scratch before

  1505. blessing him,

  1506. nor does he

  1507. wait until

  1508. Noah has

  1509. built the

  1510. boat before

  1511. declaring him

  1512. righteous.

  1513. That's the

  1514. big obedience

  1515. that we see

  1516. in Noah.

  1517. He does

  1518. what God

  1519. tells him to

  1520. do,

  1521. and we see

  1522. that,

  1523. but that's

  1524. after he's

  1525. found favor

  1526. in God's

  1527. eyes.

  1528. God's

  1529. blessing

  1530. comes

  1531. unbidden

  1532. gratuitously.

  1533. We talked

  1534. about

  1535. how creation

  1536. itself is

  1537. gratuitous,

  1538. that it

  1539. doesn't need

  1540. to happen,

  1541. that it

  1542. comes as

  1543. a gift

  1544. and as

  1545. a blessing.

  1546. And here

  1547. this blessing

  1548. on Noah

  1549. comes the

  1550. same way.

  1551. It comes

  1552. out of the

  1553. love of

  1554. God's

  1555. heart and

  1556. not God

  1557. responding to

  1558. something good

  1559. in Noah.

  1560. God's

  1561. blessing

  1562. comes,

  1563. I said

  1564. that,

  1565. okay.

  1566. It

  1567. transforms

  1568. Noah's

  1569. action from

  1570. performance

  1571. orchestrated to

  1572. win God's

  1573. favor,

  1574. which is how

  1575. the world

  1576. works,

  1577. right?

  1578. We perform

  1579. and we

  1580. expect a

  1581. reward.

  1582. He transforms

  1583. that into a

  1584. grateful response

  1585. to God's

  1586. loving initiative.

  1587. initiative.

  1588. A number of

  1589. these quotes

  1590. here come

  1591. from the

  1592. book Biblical

  1593. Critical

  1594. Thinking by

  1595. Christopher Watkin

  1596. and that was a

  1597. quote from

  1598. Watkin.

  1599. And I am

  1600. going to put

  1601. together a

  1602. little bibliography

  1603. so you have

  1604. these titles.

  1605. So this is

  1606. utterly foreign

  1607. to the fallen

  1608. world, from

  1609. pagan religions

  1610. to sophisticated

  1611. stock traders

  1612. outside the

  1613. kingdom, and

  1614. we who are

  1615. believers as

  1616. well need

  1617. regular reminders

  1618. of this

  1619. pattern.

  1620. So strongly

  1621. does our

  1622. culture and

  1623. our sin

  1624. push against

  1625. it.

  1626. God doesn't

  1627. reward us

  1628. because we

  1629. perform well.

  1630. God has

  1631. grace, he

  1632. chooses us,

  1633. and he

  1634. enables us to

  1635. respond in

  1636. faith and

  1637. obedience.

  1638. And that's

  1639. the pattern

  1640. that we see.

  1641. And, you

  1642. know, on

  1643. this side of

  1644. Christ's death

  1645. and resurrection

  1646. and we have

  1647. the New

  1648. Testament that's

  1649. a lot clearer

  1650. to us.

  1651. But still,

  1652. don't we all

  1653. need reminders

  1654. of this?

  1655. Like, I mean,

  1656. I need it

  1657. every day.

  1658. I need to

  1659. remember that

  1660. I'm not

  1661. my good,

  1662. whatever it

  1663. is.

  1664. First, it's

  1665. enabled only

  1666. by God and

  1667. not by me.

  1668. And second,

  1669. it doesn't

  1670. make God

  1671. love me

  1672. more.

  1673. God doesn't

  1674. love me

  1675. more than

  1676. he did

  1677. when I

  1678. was

  1679. screwing

  1680. everything

  1681. up.

  1682. Right?

  1683. And the

  1684. reality is I

  1685. continue to

  1686. screw everything

  1687. up as I

  1688. even do

  1689. some good

  1690. things.

  1691. Right?

  1692. But it's

  1693. all grace.

  1694. It's all

  1695. grace.

  1696. The world

  1697. is perform

  1698. in order to

  1699. gain the

  1700. prize.

  1701. This is what

  1702. we do.

  1703. Do what

  1704. you have

  1705. to do

  1706. to get

  1707. what you

  1708. want.

  1709. And we

  1710. know this

  1711. is how

  1712. the world

  1713. works.

  1714. Right?

  1715. You go

  1716. to work.

  1717. You expect

  1718. to be paid.

  1719. You do

  1720. well.

  1721. You expect

  1722. to be

  1723. promoted.

  1724. Get a

  1725. raise.

  1726. This is

  1727. how it

  1728. works.

  1729. This is

  1730. another

  1731. quotation

  1732. from

  1733. Watkin.

  1734. It says,

  1735. Grace is

  1736. not an

  1737. outworking

  1738. of Noah's

  1739. character,

  1740. family

  1741. situation,

  1742. or culture.

  1743. Such an

  1744. event of

  1745. grace is

  1746. possible in

  1747. the biblical

  1748. world because

  1749. God radically

  1750. transcends the

  1751. created order

  1752. and is not

  1753. contained or

  1754. constrained by

  1755. its logical

  1756. or natural

  1757. possibilities.

  1758. We do

  1759. not live

  1760. in a

  1761. closed

  1762. system,

  1763. but in

  1764. a creation

  1765. whose

  1766. creator is

  1767. living and

  1768. active.

  1769. And again,

  1770. that goes

  1771. back to the

  1772. foundation of

  1773. creation.

  1774. He is

  1775. outside

  1776. creation,

  1777. and he

  1778. created it.

  1779. And he

  1780. is both

  1781. transcendent,

  1782. like outside

  1783. and above,

  1784. and imminent.

  1785. He's

  1786. active within

  1787. his creation.

  1788. So that's

  1789. where we

  1790. see,

  1791. that's where

  1792. grace comes

  1793. in, right?

  1794. Because he

  1795. cares, because

  1796. he loves us.

  1797. He created

  1798. out of love

  1799. and for

  1800. blessing.

  1801. And he

  1802. continues to

  1803. do that,

  1804. to pour

  1805. that out

  1806. on us,

  1807. even though

  1808. we don't

  1809. deserve it.

  1810. We've shown

  1811. that over

  1812. and over

  1813. again.

  1814. Another thing

  1815. to think

  1816. about with

  1817. the flood

  1818. is that

  1819. God saves

  1820. us from

  1821. himself.

  1822. The waters

  1823. that drowned

  1824. the human race

  1825. were also the

  1826. waters that

  1827. floated the

  1828. ark and

  1829. saved Noah

  1830. and his

  1831. family.

  1832. We have the

  1833. judgment of

  1834. God against

  1835. evil, the

  1836. righteous and

  1837. good judgment

  1838. of God

  1839. against the

  1840. evil rebellion

  1841. of the

  1842. world.

  1843. And then

  1844. we have

  1845. him choosing

  1846. Noah and

  1847. saving Noah

  1848. and his

  1849. family right

  1850. from out of

  1851. the midst of

  1852. that judgment.

  1853. And as we

  1854. look through

  1855. scripture, we

  1856. see this over

  1857. and over again,

  1858. right?

  1859. And we see

  1860. it most

  1861. poignantly, of

  1862. course, on

  1863. the cross.

  1864. Jesus takes

  1865. the judgment

  1866. that we

  1867. deserve.

  1868. God pours

  1869. out his

  1870. judgment on

  1871. this man,

  1872. Christ Jesus,

  1873. and he

  1874. takes the

  1875. judgment from

  1876. us and

  1877. saves us

  1878. out of it.

  1879. Right?

  1880. We deserved

  1881. the judgment

  1882. that Jesus

  1883. took for us.

  1884. God rescues

  1885. us from

  1886. his own

  1887. judgment.

  1888. God rescues

  1889. us from

  1890. God.

  1891. And in

  1892. the world,

  1893. we'll find

  1894. judgment and

  1895. grace,

  1896. judgment and

  1897. love, or

  1898. whatever, as

  1899. antithetical.

  1900. Like, they

  1901. don't go

  1902. together.

  1903. But in

  1904. scripture, we

  1905. see them

  1906. knit together

  1907. in the heart

  1908. of God.

  1909. He is both

  1910. infinitely just

  1911. and will

  1912. punish sin,

  1913. and he is

  1914. infinitely

  1915. merciful, and

  1916. he opens

  1917. salvation to

  1918. all.

  1919. He invites

  1920. every person

  1921. to come to

  1922. him and

  1923. trust and be

  1924. saved.

  1925. God rescues

  1926. the heart.

  1927. He offers

  1928. the heart

  1929. to us.

  1930. Judgment and

  1931. grace flow

  1932. from the same

  1933. source, not

  1934. from a good

  1935. God fighting

  1936. against a bad

  1937. God.

  1938. You'll see

  1939. that in

  1940. religions

  1941. throughout

  1942. history.

  1943. Noah is

  1944. saved not

  1945. because he

  1946. flees from

  1947. God's

  1948. anger, but

  1949. because in

  1950. the midst of

  1951. that anger,

  1952. he trusts

  1953. God's

  1954. word.

  1955. It is

  1956. God whom

  1957. we fear

  1958. because of

  1959. his just

  1960. wrath against

  1961. sin, our

  1962. sin, but

  1963. it is in

  1964. God that we

  1965. hope in

  1966. the promise

  1967. of his

  1968. grace.

  1969. So

  1970. judgment and

  1971. mercy are

  1972. not contrary,

  1973. and God is

  1974. not one

  1975. sometimes and

  1976. the other

  1977. sometimes.

  1978. He's always

  1979. all of it.

  1980. God is

  1981. and that's

  1982. challenging

  1983. for us to

  1984. put together,

  1985. right?

  1986. And that's

  1987. true in

  1988. the world.

  1989. Again, in

  1990. Genesis, we

  1991. have the

  1992. beginnings of

  1993. themes, these

  1994. big ideas that

  1995. run through

  1996. Scripture.

  1997. And the

  1998. gospel of

  1999. Jesus makes

  2000. no sense.

  2001. things that

  2002. are

  2003. not

  2004. and if our

  2005. neighbors, our

  2006. co-workers, our

  2007. family members do

  2008. not have the

  2009. biblical

  2010. undergirding laid

  2011. in the earliest

  2012. chapters of the

  2013. Bible, and many

  2014. will not, we

  2015. need to be mindful

  2016. of that, or our

  2017. communication will

  2018. have no

  2019. resonance.

  2020. many, many

  2021. years ago, there

  2022. was some kind of

  2023. evangelism campaign

  2024. that was promoted

  2025. in the church I

  2026. was in as a

  2027. teenager.

  2028. And I'm trying

  2029. to remember, there

  2030. was this key

  2031. word, like this

  2032. key phrase, and

  2033. you were supposed

  2034. to go around

  2035. asking your

  2036. friends, you

  2037. know, something

  2038. like, I

  2039. shouldn't have

  2040. even started

  2041. because I can't

  2042. remember the

  2043. phrase.

  2044. But it had to

  2045. do with God

  2046. saving, right?

  2047. And again, my

  2048. aunt, the same

  2049. aunt, she was

  2050. like, from

  2051. what?

  2052. Like, it was not

  2053. evident that there

  2054. was anything to be

  2055. saved from, and

  2056. this is in the

  2057. 70s, right?

  2058. And that was, and

  2059. I'm not saying it

  2060. was new in the

  2061. 70s either, but

  2062. here's this woman

  2063. of the world,

  2064. who's like, well,

  2065. what are you

  2066. talking about God

  2067. saves?

  2068. Like, who

  2069. needs it, right?

  2070. So without the

  2071. undergirding that

  2072. we have, even in

  2073. just these, you

  2074. know, first 10

  2075. chapters of

  2076. Genesis, without

  2077. that, the gospel

  2078. makes no sense.

  2079. And we need to

  2080. remember that our

  2081. neighbors don't

  2082. necessarily have

  2083. that undergirding,

  2084. whether they've

  2085. heard the stories

  2086. or not, right?

  2087. I mean, and many

  2088. people will have

  2089. heard about the

  2090. flood, they will

  2091. have heard about,

  2092. but they will not

  2093. have, apart from

  2094. God's grace,

  2095. extracted from it

  2096. what the Bible is

  2097. teaching us, what

  2098. Moses wants us to

  2099. understand.

  2100. That is the

  2101. foundation for all

  2102. that we believe.

  2103. So I'm not going

  2104. to go into the

  2105. rest of it, we're

  2106. going to close

  2107. soon, unlike

  2108. last week, I'm

  2109. sorry I really

  2110. ran over.

  2111. As we move

  2112. forward in the

  2113. scriptures, we have

  2114. Babel and the

  2115. tower, in which,

  2116. if you remember,

  2117. people want to,

  2118. they decide to

  2119. build a tower to

  2120. heaven, to reach

  2121. into the heavens,

  2122. to make a name

  2123. for themselves.

  2124. How familiar is

  2125. that to us in

  2126. this culture?

  2127. We want to make

  2128. a name for

  2129. ourselves, when

  2130. in fact, God

  2131. who created us

  2132. has a name for

  2133. us.

  2134. He has an

  2135. identity for us,

  2136. and we just need

  2137. to walk into

  2138. that.

  2139. We don't need to

  2140. make a name for

  2141. ourselves, right?

  2142. And that comes

  2143. out of a sinful

  2144. pride and

  2145. autonomy.

  2146. Like, I'm going

  2147. to do it myself,

  2148. I'm going to

  2149. build this ladder

  2150. up to heaven, or

  2151. this tower, or

  2152. whatever it was.

  2153. So, all kinds

  2154. of things to

  2155. pull out of

  2156. that, and how

  2157. does our

  2158. language, like,

  2159. we didn't talk

  2160. about in

  2161. creation how

  2162. God spoke, and

  2163. it was.

  2164. What are the

  2165. implications of

  2166. that?

  2167. That was, you

  2168. know, this is

  2169. some of the

  2170. things that I

  2171. just didn't

  2172. unpack, because

  2173. we don't have

  2174. time, but God

  2175. is a speaking

  2176. God.

  2177. What does that

  2178. mean for us?

  2179. How do we see

  2180. that in our

  2181. culture, maybe

  2182. being lost

  2183. track of?

  2184. What's the

  2185. primacy of

  2186. language supposed

  2187. to be?

  2188. What is it

  2189. supposed to be?

  2190. Okay, so here

  2191. in Babel we

  2192. get language

  2193. again, right?

  2194. He confuses

  2195. their language.

  2196. We come to

  2197. the promise to

  2198. Abraham, it

  2199. sets up the

  2200. whole rest of

  2201. the narrative

  2202. about Israel,

  2203. and this is the

  2204. beginnings of

  2205. God's plan, not

  2206. really the

  2207. beginnings, but

  2208. this is a

  2209. fresh moment

  2210. in the

  2211. ancient world

  2212. where God

  2213. calls Abraham

  2214. and he's

  2215. going to give

  2216. Abraham all

  2217. his descendants

  2218. who are going

  2219. to be a

  2220. people of

  2221. God.

  2222. So the story

  2223. narrows to

  2224. Abraham and

  2225. his offspring.

  2226. The remaining

  2227. chapters of

  2228. Genesis unpack

  2229. the establishment

  2230. of the people

  2231. of Israel

  2232. through whom

  2233. God will

  2234. carry out

  2235. his plan

  2236. of redemption.

  2237. Over and over

  2238. we see sinners

  2239. who fail and

  2240. a God who

  2241. triumphs despite

  2242. their sin.

  2243. We see this

  2244. throughout Genesis.

  2245. Obviously we see

  2246. it through the

  2247. rest of Scripture,

  2248. but we see

  2249. again that the

  2250. people God

  2251. chooses are not

  2252. necessarily good.

  2253. They're not good

  2254. people, right?

  2255. Abraham, like,

  2256. throws his wife

  2257. under the bus a

  2258. couple times

  2259. because he wants

  2260. to protect

  2261. himself.

  2262. And we see

  2263. the failures

  2264. of his

  2265. descendants as

  2266. well.

  2267. And yet God

  2268. continues his

  2269. plan.

  2270. We see God's

  2271. providence at

  2272. work to

  2273. maintain that

  2274. line of

  2275. faithful Israel

  2276. despite barren

  2277. women, kidnapped

  2278. sons, murderous

  2279. brothers.

  2280. In Joseph in

  2281. particular, Moses

  2282. shows us God's

  2283. providence as

  2284. over years he

  2285. protects and

  2286. prospers Joseph,

  2287. notwithstanding

  2288. many serious

  2289. setbacks,

  2290. and he brings

  2291. his people to

  2292. Egypt.

  2293. What's that

  2294. about?

  2295. Well, so

  2296. next week we're

  2297. going to look at

  2298. little bits of,

  2299. I'll just say it

  2300. this way,

  2301. Exodus.

  2302. Okay, so we're

  2303. going to look at

  2304. that, look at the

  2305. Exodus from

  2306. Israel and try and

  2307. see what does

  2308. this add to our

  2309. picture of how

  2310. the world works,

  2311. of who God

  2312. is, who we

  2313. are.

  2314. So that's

  2315. basically what

  2316. we're doing.

  2317. But I just

  2318. encourage you as

  2319. you read,

  2320. particularly through

  2321. the Pentateuch,

  2322. but all through

  2323. Scripture, ask

  2324. yourself, so

  2325. what?

  2326. Why does it say

  2327. this here?

  2328. Why does it

  2329. refer back to,

  2330. you know,

  2331. there are

  2332. references that

  2333. refer back to

  2334. these earlier

  2335. chapters, right?

  2336. Adam and Eve

  2337. come up.

  2338. You know,

  2339. why is that

  2340. here at this

  2341. moment?

  2342. Just to think

  2343. about Scripture,

  2344. not just reading

  2345. the details and

  2346. getting the

  2347. story, which is

  2348. important, the

  2349. details are

  2350. important and

  2351. true and

  2352. valuable, but

  2353. also looking at

  2354. what is this

  2355. telling me about

  2356. God?

  2357. What is this

  2358. telling me about

  2359. the world?

  2360. And how do my

  2361. neighbors look at

  2362. this?

  2363. How do my

  2364. neighbors see

  2365. this?

  2366. So,

  2367. that's it.

  2368. So I'm

  2369. going to

  2370. close, and

  2371. you're welcome

  2372. to talk to me

  2373. anytime if you

  2374. have any

  2375. questions or

  2376. comments or

  2377. anything like

  2378. that, but

  2379. let me close

  2380. in prayer.

  2381. Father, as we

  2382. look at what

  2383. happened in the

  2384. Garden of Eden,

  2385. as we look at

  2386. the sin of the

  2387. world around

  2388. Noah and his

  2389. family, we see

  2390. your grace, we

  2391. see your

  2392. determination to

  2393. bless and to

  2394. do good to

  2395. the people you

  2396. have created.

  2397. Even in the

  2398. midst of our

  2399. rebellion and

  2400. sin, when it

  2401. looks like we

  2402. can't get any

  2403. worse, you

  2404. choose a man

  2405. and make him

  2406. righteous, and

  2407. he carries on

  2408. the human race.

  2409. And we see you

  2410. working out your

  2411. promises.

  2412. Throughout the

  2413. book of Genesis

  2414. and throughout

  2415. the scriptures, we

  2416. see your grace, and

  2417. oh God, how we

  2418. need your grace.

  2419. Remind us that it

  2420. is not our

  2421. performance that

  2422. gains us the

  2423. reward of

  2424. relationship with

  2425. you, but it is

  2426. your grace.

  2427. And help us, as

  2428. we reflect on

  2429. that, to then

  2430. walk out and

  2431. freely obey and

  2432. trust the God who

  2433. created us, who

  2434. knows all things.

  2435. In Jesus' name,

  2436. Amen.
