  1. As we begin this morning, I've been reflecting on an experience I had this spring of being the lacrosse coach, one of the lacrosse coaches for my son's lacrosse team.

  2. It was a learning experience for all of us, me included, maybe more so. It was the first year of our school being a varsity program, and sometimes we didn't know what we knew, what we didn't know.

  3. I certainly didn't know what I didn't know as a coach until I started, and I saw it in the players as well.

  4. There would be times when they would go out and run around but didn't know what they were doing because they had had no instruction.

  5. Sometimes they would run to the wrong end of the field. Sometimes they didn't know where they were supposed to be positioned because we hadn't taught them.

  6. Sometimes they would go out there and think they were doing what we had told them, but in fact do something totally different.

  7. And that created its own level of chaos. And sometimes they heard what we had taught them to do, and then they decided that they were just going to do their own thing anyway.

  8. And all of these things happened. What was encouraging to me, though, was to see how many of them would come and say,

  9. Coach, what did I do wrong? Coach, how can I do this better? They had a hunger to learn and grow, and they were seeking out more instruction and learning and knowledge

  10. so that they could improve, so that they could be better lacrosse players.

  11. I wonder if this dynamic is also true, even more so in our spiritual lives.

  12. The same dynamics that I saw in these boys.

  13. At times we are running around, not sure what to do, and mucking things up.

  14. Sometimes we think we know what we should be doing, and we're doing those really hard, but in fact we're not doing the right thing.

  15. Sometimes we know what we ought to be doing, and we just don't want to do it.

  16. We think we know better, and so we do our own thing.

  17. But I got a little taste of what I think God must be like, because God delights when we are hungry to learn from, to hear and obey His words.

  18. When His people seek Him out, then we see His kingdom expressed.

  19. And this is what we're going to talk about a little bit today as we continue our series in the book of 2 Chronicles.

  20. We will be in 2 Chronicles chapter 17 and 18.

    2 Chronicles 17 chapter mention

  21. That is page 344 in your pew Bible if you want to pull that out.

  22. 2 Chronicles 17 and 18, and the importance of God's people seeking God's Word for them.

  23. Now, I know we have some family visiting, and some of you may not be as familiar with the context of 2 Chronicles.

  24. So remember, this is a book written about the history of the kings of Israel after the kingdom had ended and gone into exile and then been restored.

  25. Okay?

  26. So there was a lot there that I just summarized, but this is the big picture of the history of Israel.

  27. And Chronicles was written as the people of God were returning to the land that God had given them and trying to figure out where do we go from here.

  28. I don't know if this is helpful, but Pastor Nick said this this week in staff meeting.

  29. He said kings was written earlier, the same history, but it was written earlier during the exile to explain to the people of Israel,

  30. how did we get here?

  31. How did we get to exile?

  32. Chronicles is written after the exile to try to teach God's people, how do we go forward from here?

  33. How do we live as God's people after the exile?

  34. What does that look like?

  35. And the book is looking back to say, what do we have to learn from what happened before so that we can know what it means to pursue God?

  36. Now, we're looking today at the story of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, and we're not going to look at everything in his.

  37. In fact, there are four chapters of Jehoshaphat.

  38. We're not going to try to cover all of that today.

  39. You might be glad.

  40. It's already 5 of 11.

  41. So, we're only going to…we're going to look at two chapters, and we're actually going to pull one theme,

  42. because one of the things that we've seen as we're looking through the book of 2 Chronicles,

  43. there are themes that are repeated over and over again.

  44. Things like, seek the Lord, that God blesses His people when they seek the Lord.

  45. The importance of right worship, of putting away false gods and worshiping other idols,

  46. and worshiping in the temple God's one true.

  47. The way that God is rewarding those who obey,

  48. and when He judges and brings consequences to those who disobey His instructions and words.

  49. So, these are some of the big themes.

  50. Today, we're going to pull out one more theme,

  51. and that is the importance of seeking and heeding God's words.

  52. So, that's our introduction.

  53. We're going to look…we're going to begin by reading the beginning of chapter 17 together.

  54. So, I'm going to read that, and then we're going to pray, and then we'll look at it together.

  55. So, 2 Chronicles chapter 17, verse 1.

    2 Chronicles 17:1

  56. 1 Chronicles 1.

  57. And then, there's a lot more in the chapter that we're going to just stop in there.

  58. So, this is the beginning of Jehoshaphat's reign.

  59. Let me pray and ask for God's help as we look at it this morning.

  60. Lord, thank You for Your Word and that it speaks to us.

  61. Lord, even as we have just sung, we pray that Your Word would shape our minds and our hearts

  62. and our hands and our wills so that we might know You and do Your will.

  63. Lord, we thank You for Your Spirit that helps us to do this.

  64. Lord, I pray for Your help this morning that I might speak the words that You would have me speak,

  65. that I would faithfully proclaim Your Word,

  66. and that we together would sit under and receive Your Word this morning.

  67. Be with us, we pray, in Jesus' name. Amen.

  68. Amen.

  69. So, the big idea this morning is that God's people are to love the teaching and hearing of God's Word to us.

  70. We're going to look at it in three steps.

  71. Here's your outline.

  72. If you're looking for it, we want to be people who are loving the teaching of God's Word,

  73. loving the hearing of God's Word,

  74. and loving God's final Word.

  75. So, that's what we will look at this morning,

  76. loving the teaching of God's Word.

  77. Just starting in chapter 17, when Jehoshaphat started out,

  78. he did really well, right?

  79. He did well in lots of areas.

  80. He did put in military fortifications.

  81. He purified the worship of Israel.

  82. Again, those are other themes that we'll cover more strongly at other times.

  83. But one of the interesting things that he did is in verses 7 through 10 that I want to read now,

  84. he created a system of teaching in Israel.

  85. So, chapter 17, verse 7, he says,

  86. in the third year of his reign, he sent out his officials,

  87. and they list all the officials, and I'm going to skip through them for time,

  88. to teach in the cities of Judah.

  89. And with them, the Levites, and then another bunch of names.

  90. And with these Levites, the priests, and two more names.

  91. And they taught in Judah, having the book of the law with…

  92. the book of the law of the Lord with them.

  93. And they went about throughout all the cities of Judah and taught among the people.

  94. One of the things that Jehoshaphat did explicitly was to send his officials,

  95. the Levites, the priests.

  96. It was everyone at all levels of government, all the different branches,

  97. were united in this task,

  98. playing the roles that God had given them more broadly.

  99. If you look back into Exodus, you can see how all these people were set up.

  100. But their roles were to teach the people about who God was,

  101. and specifically God's Word, right?

  102. It says specifically that they were teaching from the law of God,

  103. the book that God had given them.

  104. And this refers to the Scriptures,

  105. the revelation that God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai,

  106. the law and the writings that come after that.

  107. And so they had all of these things to teach and remind the people of who God is,

  108. of what God has done,

  109. and what it meant to be God's people,

  110. and how they are to live.

  111. And it emphasizes that this was not just for the officials,

  112. but this was for all people.

  113. So he sent these men out to the whole country

  114. so that all the people, each one, individual Jews…

  115. This is so helpful to see.

  116. It wasn't just that the religious leaders were supposed to know God's Word,

  117. but that every single citizen of the community

  118. was meant to know God's Word.

  119. And this was important because they were having to think about

  120. how to live distinctly in this time period

  121. when those around them were not doing so.

  122. Did you notice when I read the beginning of chapter 17,

  123. it said specifically in verse 4, right?

  124. He sought the God of his Father and walked in his commandments

  125. and not according to the practices of Israel.

  126. Now, if you were here last week,

  127. you remember there's a distinction.

  128. In this verse, Israel is being used to describe the northern kingdom.

  129. The people of God at this point in history had been divided,

  130. and this is describing the northern kingdom

  131. under a king named Ahab.

  132. And it was not a great…

  133. It was still ten tribes of the people of Israel,

  134. but they were not following the Lord properly.

  135. And Jehoshaphat was distinguishing himself

  136. from the northern kingdom by teaching the law of the Lord.

  137. And let me show you how difficult or how distinct this was.

  138. I'm going to read from 1 Kings 16,

  139. chapter 16, verse 30 to 33,

  140. a little bit about what Ahab and his rule was like.

  141. And Ahab, the son of Omri,

  142. did evil in the sight of the Lord,

  143. more than all who were before him.

  144. And as if it had been a light thing

  145. for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam,

  146. son of Nebat,

  147. he took for his wife Jezebel,

  148. the daughter of Ephbaal,

  149. the king of Sidonians,

  150. and went and served Baal

  151. and worshipped him.

  152. He erected an altar for Baal

  153. in the house of Baal,

  154. which he built in Samaria.

  155. And Ahab made an Asherah.

  156. Ahab did more to provoke the Lord,

  157. the God of Israel,

  158. to anger than all the kings of Israel

  159. who were before him.

  160. So this was, up to this point,

  161. the worst king ever.

  162. He was doing everything wrong

  163. with regard to how to be God's people

  164. living in God's land.

  165. He was worshipping other gods.

  166. He was bringing in foreign treaties.

  167. He was building false idols to worship.

  168. He was doing everything wrong.

  169. So Jehoshaphat in the southern kingdom

  170. was saying,

  171. we are going to be distinct from that.

  172. We are going to be different

  173. by actually following

  174. and teaching God's Word to us.

  175. This was a high value for Jehoshaphat,

  176. and he loved the teaching of God's Word.

  177. Now what about us?

  178. What does it look like for us

  179. to love the teaching of God's Word?

  180. Well, the first thing is that

  181. it has to come with conviction

  182. that God's Word is good.

  183. 2 Timothy 3, verses 16 and 17,

    2 Timothy 3:16

  184. Paul reminds the church of this.

  185. All Scripture is breathed out by God

  186. and is profitable for teaching,

  187. for reproof, for correction,

  188. and for training in righteousness

  189. that the man of God may be complete,

  190. equipped for every good work.

  191. We need to be convinced

  192. that this is good for us

  193. and that we need to believe

  194. that it is true, right?

  195. Just like those lacrosse boys

  196. who are running around the field,

  197. they had to believe

  198. that my instruction was good

  199. for them to want to follow it.

  200. Now, my instruction sometimes wasn't good,

  201. and we had to work through that,

  202. but I'm not infallible.

  203. But God is,

  204. and God's Word is.

  205. And so to follow it

  206. is a good thing.

  207. And we need to recognize

  208. that this will come in a context,

  209. and we know this already,

  210. but in a context

  211. where there are many voices

  212. that are saying other things

  213. other than God's Word.

  214. So in 2 Timothy chapter 4,

    2 Timothy 4:3

  215. verses 3 and 4,

  216. Paul warns Timothy this,

  217. for the time is coming

  218. when people will not endure sound teaching,

  219. but having itching ears,

  220. they will accumulate for themselves

  221. teachers to suit their own passions

  222. and will turn away

  223. from listening to the truth

  224. and wander off into myths.

  225. So God's Word warns us

  226. that we live,

  227. that every Christian

  228. has always lived

  229. in a context

  230. where there is a tidal pull,

  231. a current that pulls away

  232. from actually here

  233. listening to the teaching

  234. of God's Word,

  235. that we will,

  236. in our hearts,

  237. want to pursue

  238. teachers that say things

  239. that we want them to say,

  240. things that will suit

  241. our own passions,

  242. that will fulfill

  243. our own desires.

  244. that will conform

  245. to the values

  246. of the world around us

  247. and not be distinctive

  248. in the way

  249. that Jehoshaphat wanted

  250. and the way that God calls us

  251. to be distinctive

  252. from the world around us.

  253. And we need to recognize

  254. that there's a danger

  255. and that we may easily

  256. get caught up

  257. in these currents.

  258. And look,

  259. I could sit here

  260. and pick on a few

  261. cultural things,

  262. sexual morality

  263. or end-of-life morality

  264. or ethics

  265. or those sorts of things

  266. to say,

  267. golly,

  268. God's Word says something

  269. really important

  270. in how distinct

  271. we're meant to be

  272. from the world around us.

  273. But let me instead

  274. pick on some more

  275. core values

  276. that I think

  277. where we love things

  278. that the world loves

  279. sometimes more

  280. than God's Word,

  281. where we would prefer

  282. to have a God

  283. who doesn't judge us

  284. rather than having

  285. a God who loves

  286. righteousness

  287. and goodness.

  288. We prefer to have

  289. a God

  290. who serves

  291. our needs

  292. rather than

  293. a sovereign God

  294. who knows

  295. what is best for us.

  296. We prefer

  297. a gospel,

  298. a message of good news

  299. that tells us

  300. our life is going

  301. to be the best life ever

  302. with prosperity

  303. at every turn

  304. rather than

  305. a gospel of the cross.

  306. And we prefer

  307. a gospel of works

  308. that says

  309. if we can just

  310. do the right things,

  311. check the right boxes

  312. religiously

  313. or in the world

  314. that somehow

  315. we will be okay

  316. with God.

  317. These are some

  318. of the currents,

  319. the deeper currents

  320. that I see

  321. where we prefer

  322. to choose

  323. to see God

  324. through our own lenses

  325. rather than letting

  326. the God of the Bible

  327. reveal Himself

  328. as He is.

  329. So friends,

  330. how do we at Trinity

  331. love the teaching

  332. of God's Word?

  333. Well,

  334. hopefully,

  335. our small groups

  336. are defined

  337. as people

  338. who gather

  339. around God's Word.

  340. So,

  341. if you're not

  342. in a small group

  343. and you may not

  344. fit into one of our

  345. formal small groups

  346. but are you

  347. meeting with other people

  348. to talk about

  349. God's Word

  350. regularly

  351. so that you can

  352. look at it together

  353. and encourage

  354. one another?

  355. I don't know

  356. if you've ever

  357. thought about this

  358. but when we preach

  359. on Sunday morning

  360. we don't preach

  361. topically

  362. for a very

  363. explicit reason

  364. because we want

  365. God's Word

  366. to define

  367. the agenda

  368. for what we preach

  369. on week to week.

  370. So,

  371. we choose

  372. a chunk of Scripture

  373. and then we preach

  374. through it

  375. sequentially

  376. and we do that

  377. intentionally

  378. because as much

  379. as the elders

  380. would love to preach

  381. to you on this topic

  382. and this topic

  383. and this topic

  384. and this topic

  385. we send that off

  386. to Sunday school

  387. because we want

  388. God to define

  389. the agenda

  390. of what we say

  391. from the pulpit

  392. every Sunday.

  393. We want God's Word

  394. to say

  395. this is what

  396. needs to be said

  397. to my people today

  398. and as Nick

  399. and I

  400. and the elders

  401. prepare to preach

  402. we always want

  403. to say

  404. God

  405. let this be

  406. your Word

  407. speaking

  408. not ours.

  409. and of course

  410. we always want

  411. to encourage you

  412. to be engaged

  413. in regular

  414. personal

  415. Bible intake.

  416. Love the teaching

  417. of God's Word

  418. by

  419. having an app

  420. on your phone

  421. listening to God's Word

  422. if you have a hard time

  423. sitting down

  424. and reading

  425. getting a good

  426. study Bible

  427. so you can not only

  428. read it

  429. but actually

  430. study it

  431. and get into it

  432. and understand it

  433. memorizing Scripture

  434. I'm always encouraged

  435. when I visit homes

  436. and in the bathroom

  437. there's like a

  438. there's a Bible verse

  439. you know

  440. taped to the mirror

  441. so that when we wake up

  442. in the morning

  443. there's God's Word

  444. just in the warp

  445. and woof

  446. of the life

  447. of this family.

  448. These are some ways

  449. that we can love

  450. God's Word.

  451. Jehoshaphat

  452. didn't just prioritize

  453. the teaching

  454. of God's Word

  455. though he also

  456. sought to hear

  457. God's Word

  458. and so in chapter 18

  459. we see Jehoshaphat

  460. seeking to hear

  461. from God

  462. in the midst of

  463. quite a challenging

  464. situation.

  465. Now prophets

  466. are one of the ways

  467. in the Old Testament

  468. that God speaks

  469. to his people

  470. and we see a prophet

  471. coming into this.

  472. I'm going to try

  473. to go through this

  474. really quickly.

  475. In chapter 18

  476. Jehoshaphat

  477. against wisdom

  478. made an alliance

  479. with Ahab

  480. and we think

  481. this was probably

  482. a good-hearted attempt

  483. to unify Israel

  484. but it was unwise

  485. because as we've seen

  486. earlier Ahab

  487. was not a good king

  488. and so

  489. and Ahab says

  490. hey since we're

  491. in this alliance

  492. let's go up

  493. and recapture

  494. this town

  495. that we had lost

  496. this town of

  497. Ramoth Gilead

  498. and so

  499. so in verses

  500. one through four

  501. of chapter 18

  502. this is the setup

  503. for what happens next.

  504. So now if you want

  505. to turn with me

  506. chapter 18

  507. verse 4

  508. they're about to go up

  509. and this is what

  510. God's word says

  511. and Jehoshaphat

  512. said to the king

  513. of Israel

  514. inquire first

  515. for the word

  516. of the Lord

  517. and then the king

  518. of Israel

  519. gathered the prophets

  520. together

  521. four hundred men

  522. and said to them

  523. shall we go up

  524. against Ramoth Gilead

  525. or shall I refrain

  526. and they said

  527. go up for God

  528. will give it

  529. into the hands

  530. of the king

  531. but Jehoshaphat

  532. said

  533. is there not

  534. here another prophet

  535. of the Lord

  536. of whom we may inquire

  537. and the king of Israel

  538. said to Jehoshaphat

  539. there is yet

  540. one man

  541. by whom we may

  542. inquire of the Lord

  543. Micah

  544. the son of

  545. Micaiah

  546. the son of Imlah

  547. but I hate him

  548. for he never prophesied

  549. good concerning me

  550. but always evil

  551. and Jehoshaphat

  552. said let not

  553. the king say so

  554. and then the king

  555. of Israel

  556. summoned an officer

  557. and said bring

  558. quickly Micaiah

  559. son of Imlah

  560. now the king

  561. of Israel

  562. and Jehoshaphat

  563. the king

  564. of Judah

  565. were sitting

  566. on their thrones

  567. arrayed in their robes

  568. and they were sitting

  569. at the threshing floor

  570. at the entrance

  571. of the gate

  572. of Samaria

  573. and all the prophets

  574. were prophesying

  575. before them

  576. and Zedekiah

  577. the son

  578. of Chenanah

  579. made for himself

  580. horns of iron

  581. and said

  582. thus says the Lord

  583. with these

  584. you shall push

  585. the Syrians

  586. until they are

  587. destroyed

  588. and all the prophets

  589. prophesied and said

  590. go up to Ramoth

  591. Gilead

  592. and triumph

  593. the Lord will give it

  594. into the hands

  595. of the king

  596. okay

  597. did you get all that

  598. in summary

  599. they're going up

  600. and Jehoshaphat

  601. says wait

  602. wait wait

  603. we don't want to go

  604. without hearing

  605. from the Lord

  606. don't you have any

  607. prophets of the Lord

  608. and Ahab says

  609. sure

  610. I've got 400 guys

  611. in my pocket

  612. and they're here

  613. to say

  614. go do whatever

  615. the king wants

  616. and so they show up

  617. and you know what

  618. they say

  619. let's go do

  620. what the king wants

  621. and Jehoshaphat

  622. smells a rat

  623. and so he's like

  624. wait

  625. but is there anyone

  626. who actually inquires

  627. of the Lord

  628. and when

  629. again

  630. when you see the Lord

  631. the way it's written

  632. with all capitals

  633. that's Yahweh

  634. that's the God

  635. of Israel

  636. the way he revealed

  637. himself to Moses

  638. way back when

  639. and so

  640. so

  641. so he says

  642. isn't there anyone

  643. and Ahab says

  644. oh yeah

  645. there's this one guy

  646. but he's so annoying

  647. because he never says

  648. anything good about me

  649. and

  650. and Jehoshaphat says

  651. if he seeks the Lord

  652. let's bring him in

  653. and so

  654. they send for this

  655. prophet of the Lord

  656. but in the meantime

  657. the end of this section

  658. imagine this circus

  659. right

  660. these two kings

  661. are sitting on a throne

  662. and there are 400

  663. prophets

  664. prophets

  665. and it feels like

  666. it's this

  667. just big pomp and show

  668. of supporting the king

  669. and this

  670. this one priest

  671. Zedekiah

  672. makes a crown

  673. of horns

  674. and says

  675. with this horn

  676. you will go

  677. and have great victory

  678. and

  679. and you just think

  680. what

  681. in this context

  682. how strong

  683. Jehoshaphat is

  684. to say

  685. but don't we need

  686. to hear from the Lord

  687. where there's

  688. all this cultural pressure

  689. to just

  690. go with the flow

  691. but he doesn't do it

  692. he doesn't do it

  693. the story goes on

  694. it continues

  695. in verse 12

  696. and the messenger

  697. who went to summon

  698. Micaiah

  699. said to him

  700. behold

  701. the words of the prophet

  702. with

  703. the words of the prophet

  704. with one accord

  705. are favorable

  706. to the king

  707. let your word

  708. be like the word

  709. of one of them

  710. and speak favorably

  711. but Micaiah said

  712. as the Lord lives

  713. what my God says

  714. that I will speak

  715. and when he had come

  716. to the king

  717. the king said to him

  718. Micaiah

  719. shall we go

  720. to Ramoth Gilead

  721. to battle

  722. or shall I refrain

  723. and he answered them

  724. go up in triumph

  725. they will be given

  726. into your hand

  727. but the king said to him

  728. how many times

  729. shall I make you swear

  730. that you speak to me

  731. nothing but the truth

  732. in the name of the Lord

  733. and he said

  734. this is now Micaiah

  735. responding

  736. and he said

  737. I saw all Israel

  738. scattered on the mountains

  739. as sheep

  740. that have no shepherd

  741. and the Lord said

  742. these have no master

  743. let each return

  744. to his home

  745. in peace

  746. and the king of Israel

  747. said to Jehoshaphat

  748. did I not tell you

  749. that he would not

  750. prophesy good

  751. concerning me

  752. but evil

  753. and Micaiah said

  754. therefore hear

  755. the word of the Lord

  756. I saw the Lord

  757. sitting on his throne

  758. and all the host

  759. of heaven

  760. standing at his right hand

  761. and on his left

  762. and the Lord said

  763. who will entice Ahab

  764. the king of Israel

  765. that he may go up

  766. and fall

  767. at Ramoth Gilead

  768. and one

  769. and one said

  770. one thing

  771. and another said another

  772. then a spirit

  773. came forward

  774. and said before the Lord

  775. saying

  776. I will entice him

  777. and the Lord

  778. said to him

  779. by what means

  780. and he said

  781. I will go out

  782. and will be a lying spirit

  783. in the mouth

  784. of all his prophets

  785. and he said

  786. you are to entice him

  787. and you shall succeed

  788. go out

  789. and do so

  790. now therefore

  791. behold

  792. the Lord

  793. has put a lying spirit

  794. in the mouth

  795. of these your prophets

  796. the Lord

  797. has declared

  798. disaster

  799. concerning you

  800. okay

  801. did you get all that

  802. this is great drama

  803. this would be a great TV show

  804. can you imagine this scene

  805. so Micaiah

  806. comes in

  807. and the guy who's bringing him

  808. says hey Micaiah

  809. like everyone's saying

  810. they should go up

  811. can you just like agree

  812. can you say the same thing too

  813. so that everyone will be happy

  814. and

  815. and Micaiah's like

  816. no

  817. I'm a prophet of the Lord

  818. I'm called to speak God's word

  819. so I'm going to do

  820. whatever God says

  821. now then

  822. confusingly

  823. when he gets there

  824. and the king asks him

  825. the first thing he does

  826. is seemingly

  827. parrot

  828. what all the other prophets

  829. are saying

  830. which raises a question

  831. why is he doing this

  832. is this really what he's saying

  833. and

  834. and it

  835. it makes

  836. lots of commentators

  837. think he's being ironic here

  838. he's saying

  839. yeah okay here

  840. this is what it sounds like

  841. if I'm going to say

  842. what everyone else says

  843. it's also possible

  844. given what we see later

  845. that

  846. the Lord is

  847. wanting to use his prophets

  848. to give

  849. a lying spirit

  850. so that

  851. it will entice Micaiah

  852. to go

  853. or

  854. entice Ahab

  855. to go up

  856. so

  857. so it's a little unclear

  858. exactly what Micaiah

  859. is doing there

  860. but fascinatingly

  861. even Ahab

  862. the evil king

  863. who isn't seeking the Lord

  864. this isn't Jehoshaphat

  865. this is Ahab saying

  866. oh come on Micaiah

  867. I know that's not

  868. what you have to say to me

  869. it's got to be

  870. something worse than that

  871. you're just telling me

  872. to go up and do what I want

  873. that can't be really

  874. what God is saying

  875. it's fascinating right

  876. Ahab is the one

  877. who calls him out

  878. and Micaiah says

  879. yeah you're right

  880. that's not actually

  881. all that I have to say

  882. in fact

  883. what I see

  884. is Israel

  885. without

  886. a shepherd

  887. and in fact

  888. you should not

  889. go up

  890. but you should

  891. go home

  892. in peace

  893. go back

  894. to your towns

  895. and be at rest

  896. this is actually

  897. what God is saying

  898. to you

  899. if you were to listen

  900. and Ahab says

  901. see

  902. I told you

  903. and Micaiah continues

  904. and he tells

  905. the story

  906. of what's going on

  907. in this heavenly throne room

  908. where there's this discussion

  909. between God

  910. and his angels

  911. the spirits

  912. saying

  913. how can I get

  914. to my plan

  915. because my plan

  916. is for Ahab

  917. to go up

  918. and to do this thing

  919. and he's going

  920. to be killed

  921. and so they have

  922. this back and forth

  923. and then I will put

  924. a lying spirit

  925. in the prophets

  926. and they will speak

  927. these words

  928. and then Ahab

  929. will go up

  930. and do this thing

  931. and then he will

  932. be destroyed

  933. and so Micaiah

  934. lays bare

  935. the inner workings

  936. of what God

  937. is doing

  938. how God

  939. sovereignly

  940. is using

  941. lying prophets

  942. to carry out

  943. his sovereign will

  944. now

  945. it's fascinating

  946. to see what happens

  947. then

  948. right

  949. because Ahab

  950. who got

  951. the first one

  952. and said

  953. no that can't be it

  954. now here's these things

  955. and if you read

  956. the rest of the chapter

  957. what he does

  958. is he says

  959. well

  960. that doesn't matter

  961. everyone else is saying

  962. we should go up

  963. so let's go up together

  964. but I've got a great idea

  965. I'm going to disguise myself

  966. so I don't look like the king

  967. and I'm going to let you

  968. Jehoshaphat

  969. look like the king

  970. so that when we go together

  971. you'll be leading us

  972. and no one will know

  973. that I'm the king

  974. so who's ever going to

  975. want to kill me

  976. and so that's the idea

  977. he tries to hide

  978. by disguising himself

  979. they go up

  980. the enemies recognize

  981. that Jehoshaphat

  982. isn't Ahab

  983. God delivers Jehoshaphat

  984. miraculously

  985. when he's the target

  986. of their initial attack

  987. they then break off

  988. their attack

  989. and in a fascinating

  990. turn of events

  991. it says a man

  992. in his innocence

  993. that's the better

  994. translation of the word

  995. in his ignorance

  996. innocence

  997. just shoots an arrow

  998. and in God's sovereignty

  999. it flies through

  1000. and it pierces through

  1001. Ahab's armor

  1002. and he dies

1003. by the end of that day

  1004. and so God's word

  1005. is fulfilled

  1006. and the plant

  1007. and the armies

  1008. are defeated

1009. they don't win the battle

1010. they don't win the day

1011. but they do go home

  1012. in peace

1013. now what are we to make

  1014. of this story

  1015. this is true

  1016. of lots of chronicles

  1017. where we're like

1018. okay what is the point

  1019. of all this

1020. because one of the big

  1021. questions that I have

  1022. is Jehoshaphat

  1023. was he obeying

  1024. or disobeying

1025. the word that he heard

  1026. from God

  1027. about this

  1028. because God's plan

  1029. was for them

  1030. to go up

  1031. so that Ahab

  1032. would be killed

  1033. and Jehoshaphat

  1034. knew that

  1035. I think that's

  1036. giving him way

  1037. too much credit

  1038. to be honest

  1039. I think Jehoshaphat

  1040. was the

  1041. little brother

  1042. was the weaker

  1043. of the two kings

  1044. and Ahab said

  1045. we're gonna do this

  1046. let's go do this

  1047. and Jehoshaphat said

  1048. well I guess

  1049. maybe we can try

  1050. and do that

  1051. because I don't know

  1052. what else to do

  1053. because I want

  1054. to unify Israel

1055. that's my read on it

  1056. you know

  1057. here's the question

  1058. for you

  1059. for coffee hour

  1060. was he wise enough

  1061. to see God's hand

  1062. and to follow along

1063. or was he foolish enough

  1064. to really believe

  1065. that by being

  1066. Ahab's ally

1067. this would be a good thing

  1068. it doesn't say

  1069. what his motivations were

  1070. we do know

  1071. at the beginning

  1072. of chapter 19

  1073. another prophet comes

  1074. and he rebukes

  1075. Jehoshaphat

  1076. for his alliance

  1077. with Ahab

  1078. he says

  1079. you should not

  1080. ally with this

  1081. wicked man

  1082. who does not

  1083. follow the Lord

  1084. what we do see

  1085. in all this story

  1086. is that Jehoshaphat

  1087. longed to hear

  1088. God's word

  1089. and there's a little

  1090. question at the end

  1091. about whether he

  1092. actually obeyed it

  1093. so

  1094. but he did long

  1095. to hear God's word

  1096. and friends

  1097. this is what God

  1098. would want for us

  1099. as well

  1100. now we might ask

  1101. ourselves

  1102. but does God

  1103. still speak

  1104. are there still

  1105. prophets

  1106. that we should be

  1107. seeking out

  1108. who can come

  1109. and say

  1110. thus saith the Lord

  1111. well

  1112. Jesus has given us

  1113. a better

  1114. a better fulfillment

  1115. than that

  1116. if you remember

  1117. in John 16

1118. in the Garden of Gethsemane

1119. or not in the Garden of Gethsemane

  1120. in the Last Supper

  1121. as Jesus is teaching

  1122. he says this

  1123. in John chapter 16

    John 16:12–14

  1124. verses 12

  1125. through 14

  1126. he says

  1127. I still have

  1128. many things

  1129. to say to you

  1130. but you cannot

  1131. bear them now

  1132. when the spirit

  1133. of truth comes

  1134. he will guide you

  1135. into all truth

  1136. for he will not

  1137. speak on his own

  1138. authority

  1139. but whatever he hears

  1140. he will speak

  1141. and he will declare

  1142. to you

  1143. the things

  1144. that are to come

  1145. he will glorify me

  1146. for he will take

  1147. what is mine

1148. and declare it to you

  1149. and friends

  1150. what God did

  1151. is he filled

  1152. his initial

  1153. followers

  1154. with the Holy Spirit

  1155. and he's continued

  1156. to fill his church

  1157. with the Holy Spirit

  1158. through the apostles

  1159. writing

  1160. we have this book

  1161. that is the writings

  1162. of those

  1163. inspired by

  1164. the Holy Spirit

  1165. to write scripture

  1166. and we

  1167. as believers

  1168. in Christ

  1169. have the Holy Spirit

  1170. in us

  1171. allowing us

  1172. to understand

  1173. God's word

  1174. the Bible says

  1175. that without

  1176. God's help

  1177. we are unable

  1178. we are blind

  1179. to seeing

  1180. the truth of God

  1181. but that when

  1182. God's spirit

1183. is at work in us

  1184. we are able

  1185. to see

  1186. the truth

  1187. of God's word

  1188. and this is

  1189. a glorious

  1190. thing

  1191. and we will

  1192. have to have

  1193. this discernment

  1194. because as we've

  1195. talked about before

  1196. there will be

  1197. false teachers

  1198. there will be

  1199. those who will

  1200. come and say

  1201. I'm not going

  1202. to read it

  1203. but 2 Peter 2

  1204. talks about

  1205. false prophets

  1206. coming along

  1207. who will teach

  1208. destructive heresies

  1209. and will live

  1210. destructive lives

  1211. to hurt those

  1212. who come

  1213. how do we

  1214. discern false

  1215. teaching from

  1216. true

  1217. well here are

  1218. a couple of

  1219. thoughts

  1220. this probably

  1221. isn't comprehensive

  1222. one

  1223. whatever we teach

  1224. should be consistent

  1225. with all of

  1226. what the Bible

  1227. says

  1228. it's easy

  1229. to pick and

  1230. choose

  1231. this is my

  1232. favorite verse

  1233. I like this one

  1234. God so loved

  1235. the world

  1236. great

  1237. yes God

  1238. loved the world

  1239. but God's

  1240. love is shaped

  1241. in all sorts

  1242. of nuances

  1243. by the rest

  1244. of the Bible

  1245. so let's make

  1246. sure we understand

  1247. that what we're

  1248. teaching is in

  1249. is in with

  1250. the whole Bible

  1251. the second thing

  1252. I would say

  1253. is that all

  1254. teaching needs

  1255. to be consistent

  1256. with the gospel

  1257. of the cross

  1258. and resurrection

  1259. of Jesus

  1260. it must be infused

  1261. with humility

  1262. and triumph

  1263. it must so

  1264. patterns of both

  1265. death and life

  1266. of suffering

  1267. and sanctification

  1268. so much false

  1269. teaching goes to

  1270. one or the other

  1271. sides of those

  1272. equations

  1273. and it's either

  1274. all triumph

  1275. with no suffering

  1276. or it's all

  1277. suffering

  1278. and no triumph

  1279. finally

  1280. whatever the

  1281. teaching is

  1282. it should exalt

  1283. Jesus Christ

  1284. it should point

  1285. to him

  1286. because John

  1287. 14 tells us

  1288. that the spirit

  1289. will come

  1290. to teach us

  1291. about Christ

  1292. and it's so

  1293. easy for our

  1294. teaching to fall

  1295. into

  1296. exaltation

  1297. of human reason

  1298. or human wisdom

  1299. God forbid

  1300. that you would

  1301. come and want

  1302. my wisdom

  1303. when you come

  1304. on Sunday morning

  1305. what you need

  1306. is God's wisdom

  1307. and my role

  1308. by God's grace

  1309. is to teach

  1310. that to you

  1311. and when I'm wrong

  1312. because I'm not

  1313. infallible

  1314. you can rebuke me

  1315. you can challenge

  1316. me and we can

  1317. talk about it

  1318. but recognize

  1319. that it's not

  1320. about exalting

  1321. a human wisdom

  1322. or a human reason

  1323. and it's not

  1324. exalting

  1325. of an alternative

  1326. way for us

  1327. to find salvation

  1328. and be acceptable

  1329. to God

  1330. right

  1331. there is only

  1332. one gospel

  1333. and it is the

  1334. gospel of grace

  1335. by grace

  1336. you have been

  1337. saved through faith

  1338. and this

  1339. not of yourselves

  1340. is the gift

  1341. of God

  1342. so that no one

  1343. may boast

  1344. not of works

  1345. so those are

  1346. a couple of

  1347. litmus tests

  1348. as you think

  1349. about false

  1350. teaching

  1351. look for these

  1352. things

  1353. when these

  1354. things are true

  1355. these will be

  1356. helpful

  1357. when they are

  1358. missing

  1359. then we need

  1360. to be aware

  1361. and be wise

  1362. I've gone

  1363. way long

  1364. I'm going to

  1365. close this

  1366. quickly

  1367. but

  1368. God's people

  1369. are to love

  1370. the teaching

  1371. and the hearing

  1372. of God's word

  1373. but finally

  1374. we need to

  1375. recognize

  1376. that we need

  1377. to love

  1378. God's final word

  1379. more than

  1380. anything else

  1381. Hebrews 1

  1382. says this

  1383. long ago

  1384. at many times

  1385. in many ways

  1386. God spoke

  1387. to our fathers

  1388. by the prophets

  1389. but in these

  1390. last days

  1391. he has spoken

  1392. to us

  1393. by his son

  1394. whom he

  1395. appointed

  1396. the heir

  1397. of all things

  1398. and through

  1399. whom also

  1400. he created

  1401. the world

  1402. he is the

  1403. radiance

  1404. of the glory

  1405. of God

  1406. and the exact

  1407. imprint

  1408. of his nature

  1409. and he upholds

  1410. the universe

  1411. by the word

  1412. of his power

  1413. after making

  1414. purification

  1415. for sin

  1416. he sat down

  1417. at the right

  1418. hand of the

  1419. majesty

  1420. on high

  1421. friends

  1422. this

  1423. is God's

  1424. word

  1425. to us

  1426. so that

  1427. we might

  1428. know

  1429. him

  1430. the word

  1431. of God

  1432. made flesh

  1433. that dwelt

  1434. among us

  1435. and we have

  1436. beheld

  1437. his glory

  1438. it is about

  1439. Jesus

  1440. at the end

  1441. of the day

  1442. this is how

  1443. God has revealed

  1444. himself to us

  1445. and when we

  1446. want to know

  1447. how to be

  1448. God's people

  1449. we look

  1450. to Jesus

  1451. when we want

  1452. to know

  1453. how we become

  1454. a part of

  1455. God's people

  1456. we trust

  1457. and believe

  1458. in Jesus

  1459. that his life

  1460. and death

  1461. and resurrection

  1462. for us

  1463. is our salvation

  1464. and by faith

  1465. in him

  1466. we have life

  1467. with him

  1468. Jesus himself

  1469. rebuked

  1470. the teachers

  1471. of the law

  1472. in his day

  1473. saying you

  1474. search the scriptures

  1475. because you think

  1476. in them you have

  1477. eternal life

  1478. and it is they

  1479. that bear witness

  1480. about me

  1481. yet you refuse

  1482. to come to me

  1483. that you may

  1484. have life

  1485. so if you're ever

  1486. worried that we

  1487. worship the Bible

  1488. more than Jesus

  1489. recognize that

  1490. Jesus himself

  1491. said no

  1492. the Bible

  1493. is given to us

  1494. so that we

  1495. know him better

  1496. so that we

  1497. know him

  1498. in his fullness

  1499. and so that we

  1500. can understand him

  1501. and this is how

  1502. we know him

  1503. and this is what

  1504. 2nd Chronicles

  1505. in the story

  1506. of Jehoshaphat

  1507. at least one

  1508. slice of it

  1509. is teaching us

  1510. that God's

  1511. people are

  1512. to love

  1513. the teaching

  1514. and the hearing

  1515. of God's

  1516. word

  1517. and to worship

  1518. his final word

  1519. to us

  1520. let's pray

  1521. together

  1522. Lord thank you

  1523. for your word

  1524. and thank you

  1525. for the teaching

  1526. that you give us

  1527. in it

  1528. Lord thank you

  1529. that you are

  1530. not a God

  1531. that we have

  1532. to guess

  1533. or have

  1534. some spiritual

  1535. experience

  1536. in order to

  1537. know

  1538. but Lord

  1539. thank you

  1540. that you

  1541. have made

  1542. yourself known

  1543. through your

  1544. word

  1545. and finally

  1546. through Jesus

  1547. oh Lord

  1548. we pray

  1549. that we would

  1550. be those

  1551. who love

  1552. you

  1553. and love

  1554. your word

  1555. we pray

  1556. this in

  1557. Jesus name

  1558. amen

  1559. amen

  1560. to

  1561. amen

  1562. to

  1563. amen

  1564. to
