  1. Well, good morning, church. We are looking this morning at the book of Colossians. That's page 924 in the Pew Bible.

  2. ! As we launch out into a new academic year as a church, today we want to talk a little bit about what Trinity is all about.

  3. Next week, we're going to start our kind of regular fall sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes, where we'll talk about finding lasting joy in a fleeting world.

  4. But today, we want to talk about what's at the center of everything we do as a church.

  5. Maybe you're new, or maybe you've been coming to Trinity for a couple weeks or months this summer, or maybe you've been coming for some time.

  6. Either way, today we want to come back to what's at the heart of our ministry and our life together as a church.

  7. I've been told that when you're sailing, if your bearings are just a few degrees off when you leave the harbor,

  8. eventually you can end up very far from where you want it to be.

  9. So, it's good to come back to the compass, to come back to the center and make sure that we're charting our course according to the right direction,

  10. to make sure we're keeping the main thing the main thing.

  11. And to do that, we want to look at the book of Colossians today.

  12. Chapter 1, verses 3 through 20.

  13. So, as we look at Colossians 1, let me pray, and then I'll read our passage for us.

  14. Father, we do long to praise You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three in one.

  15. As we come to Your written Word, God, reveal to us again afresh the incarnate Word, Jesus,

  16. who lived, died, rose again, and ascended for us and for our salvation.

  17. Spirit, come, help us to understand the things that we consider.

  18. And as we go forth today out into the world that You've made and that You love,

  19. would we not just understand these things, but would we live these things to Your glory?

  20. We pray this in Jesus' mighty name. Amen.

  21. All right, Paul writes this in Colossians 1, starting in verse 3.

  22. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for You.

  23. Since we heard of Your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that You have for all the saints,

  24. because the hope laid up for You in heaven.

  25. Of this You have heard before in the word of truth, the gospel, which has come to You,

  26. as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing,

  27. as it also does among You since the day You heard it and understood the grace of God in truth.

  28. Just as You learned it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant,

  29. He is a faithful minister of Christ on Your behalf and has made known to us Your love in the Spirit.

  30. And so, from the day we heard, we've not ceased to pray for You,

  31. asking that You may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

  32. so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him,

  33. bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God,

  34. being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might,

  35. for all endurance and patience with joy,

  36. giving thanks to the Father who has qualified You

  37. to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

  38. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness

  39. and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

  40. in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

  41. He is the image of the invisible God,

  42. the firstborn of all creation.

  43. For by Him all things were created,

  44. in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,

  45. whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities,

  46. all things were created through Him and for Him.

  47. And He is before all things,

  48. and in Him all things hold together.

  49. And He is the head of the body, the church.

  50. He is the beginning,

  51. the firstborn from the dead,

  52. that in everything He might be preeminent.

  53. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

  54. and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things,

  55. whether on earth or in heaven,

  56. making peace by the blood of His cross.

  57. So I wonder if you've ever considered that

  58. everyone really lives with what we might call a center,

  59. with a center of some kind.

  60. It's sort of the thing that makes your life tick.

  61. It's the thing that holds everything else together

  62. and kind of gives it meaning.

  63. For some people, family is their center.

  64. That's what gives their life meaning and purpose.

  65. It's why they do what they do.

  66. It fuels them for what they do.

  67. For other people, public service is their center,

  68. we might say,

  69. whether through their work

  70. or through their volunteer involvement.

  71. Trying to make the world a better place

  72. is what centers them

  73. and gives their life meaning and energy and direction.

  74. We could list a lot of other things.

  75. And if that's true for individuals,

  76. it's also true for communities too.

  77. Communities often have something that centers them,

  78. that unites them,

  79. and energizes them, and defines them.

  80. And this is true of churches as well.

  81. Churches will often have what we're calling a center,

  82. something that unites and energizes and defines them.

  83. It's the thing that they tend to always talk about.

  84. It's the thing they get excited about.

  85. It's the thing they think is most worth pursuing and proclaiming.

  86. Now, when we turn to the New Testament,

  87. especially when we turn to the New Testament epistles,

  88. we start to see that for the apostles

  89. and for the early churches,

  90. that they had a center.

  91. And they were quite clear about the thing

  92. that united and energized and defined them.

  93. There is something that they talk about all the time,

  94. and there's something that they get excited about,

  95. and there's something that they think is worth pursuing and proclaiming.

  96. What is it?

  97. Well, it's what Paul calls in verse 5 of our passage,

  98. the gospel,

  99. which literally means good news.

  100. At the heart of the church is good news.

  101. And the challenge to every generation of Christians,

  102. the invitation for every generation of Christians,

  103. is to keep the church a place

  104. where it is this message of good news

  105. that unites and energizes and defines us.

  106. And on the other hand,

  107. there's a temptation before every generation of Christians,

  108. a temptation before every local church,

  109. is to put something else in the center.

  110. Because often we're tempted to think that something else

  111. and something more is needed

  112. to energize the church

  113. and to impact our communities

  114. and to change people's lives.

  115. And most of the time,

  116. the other things that we're tempted to kind of make central,

  117. oftentimes they're good things.

  118. Things like social concern,

  119. things like spiritual formation,

  120. things like heartfelt worship,

  121. things like authentic community.

  122. The church always faces the temptation

  123. to take any one of those good things

  124. and push it to the center of their life,

  125. to make it the main thing.

  126. But the same thing always happens

  127. when we take a good thing

  128. and make it the main thing.

  129. And what happens is the whole thing

  130. starts to shake

  131. and get off balance.

  132. Community actually starts to fracture

  133. and worship starts to become performative and hollow.

  134. And spiritual formation starts to become

  135. a burdensome task of self-improvement.

  136. And social concern

  137. starts to become a power game

  138. where the ends justify the means.

  139. And suddenly,

  140. the church doesn't look like the church at all.

  141. And the church doesn't certainly sound

  142. or look like the bearer of good news.

  143. So let's look at what Paul says here

  144. about the gospel

  145. in Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  146. And let's see how this gospel,

  147. this good news,

  148. is worthy to be the center,

  149. not just of our church,

  150. but of our lives.

  151. And we're going to see two things here

  152. in Colossians 1.

  153. First, we're going to see what the gospel does.

  154. And second,

  155. we're going to see what the gospel declares.

  156. So let's go deeper into that first point,

  157. which is this.

  158. Keep the gospel central in your life

  159. because of what the gospel alone can do,

  160. because of what the gospel alone does.

  161. And what exactly does the gospel do?

  162. Well, look with me again at verses 3 through 6.

  163. And pay particular attention to verse 6

  164. as I read this paragraph again.

  165. Paul says,

  166. We always thank God,

  167. the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  168. when we pray for you,

  169. since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus

  170. and of the love that you have for all the saints

  171. because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.

  172. Of this you've heard before in the word of truth,

  173. the gospel,

  174. which has come to you,

  175. as indeed in the whole world

  176. it is bearing fruit and increasing,

  177. as it also does among you

  178. since the day you heard it

  179. and understood the grace of God in truth.

  180. Did you see there?

  181. What does the gospel do,

  182. according to verse 6?

  183. Not just in the whole world,

  184. but among you.

  185. Paul says it's bearing fruit

  186. and it's increasing.

  187. In other words,

  188. the gospel is changing you

  189. and it's changing others.

  190. It's changing you.

  191. You're bearing fruit.

  192. And it's changing others.

  193. It's increasing.

  194. You see, for Paul

  195. and for the rest of the New Testament,

  196. the gospel,

  197. it's like a seed

  198. that goes down into the soil

  199. and it starts growing.

  200. It starts a dynamic of change

  201. that's unstoppable.

  202. It's like a depth charge

  203. dropped into the ocean

  204. that explodes

  205. and sends its reverberations

  206. out in every direction.

  207. It starts to change your life

  208. and it starts to change

  209. the life of others around you.

  210. Many years ago,

  211. some friends of ours

  212. planted a strawberry patch

  213. in their backyard.

  214. And at first,

  215. the kind of plants sprung up.

  216. It was sort of cool

  217. and they produced

  218. these beautiful red berries.

  219. They started bearing fruit.

  220. But then they discovered

  221. something kind of troublesome

  222. for their garden

  223. and for their backyard.

  224. It was that these strawberries

  225. had actually sent out

  226. these runners,

  227. these shoots,

  228. and they just went

  229. in every direction

  230. out from the garden

  231. into the yard.

  232. And suddenly,

  233. they had strawberries

  234. growing in every direction.

  235. And you see,

  236. that's true of the gospel, friends.

  237. We often think of the gospel

  238. as merely just kind of

  239. the starting point

  240. of the Christian life.

  241. We think of it

  242. as sort of like the thing

  243. that gets you in the door.

  244. And then we start

  245. to mistakenly think

  246. that there are all

  247. these other things

  248. that are really going

  249. to change us

  250. and really going to change

  251. the communities

  252. that we're a part of.

  253. We think the gospel

  254. is what beginners need,

  255. but the mature

  256. need something else.

  257. And in fact,

  258. that's actually

  259. what the book of Colossians

  260. is all about.

  261. Paul is saying,

  262. no,

  263. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  264. is completely sufficient.

  265. Don't think you have to

  266. move beyond the gospel

  267. to deeper things,

  268. that there's some supplement

  269. out there

  270. that's just waiting

  271. for you to find

  272. that's really going

  273. to unlock the key.

  274. No, Paul says,

  275. what is the thing

  276. that keeps bearing fruit

  277. in the life

  278. of this church in Colossae?

  279. Paul says,

  280. since the day you heard it,

  281. since the day you heard it,

  282. the gospel's been

  283. bearing fruit in your life.

  284. It's kept on being

  285. that catalyst of growth.

  286. It's been said

  287. that the gospel's

  288. not just the ABCs

  289. of the Christian life,

  290. that you eventually

  291. have to graduate

  292. and move on

  293. to bigger and better things.

  294. No,

  295. the gospel's the A to Z

  296. of the Christian life.

  297. It's the beginning

  298. and middle

  299. and end.

  300. Is it simple enough

  301. that a child

  302. can understand it?

  303. Yes!

  304. But is it profound enough

  305. that the human heart

  306. will never reach its bottom?

  307. Also, yes.

  308. It's like the ocean.

  309. You know,

  310. even a child

  311. can splash in the waves

  312. as those waves

  313. come up onto the sand.

  314. And even a child

  315. can thrill

  316. in the beauty

  317. and power of the ocean.

  318. But ask

  319. the most brilliant

  320. marine biologist

  321. or ask

  322. the most accomplished

  323. big wave surfer

  324. if they have plumbed

  325. the depths

  326. of the ocean's

  327. beauty and power

  328. and what will they say?

  329. No!

  330. There's so much more

  331. to discover.

  332. There's so much more

  333. to unfold.

  334. Friends,

  335. that is the good news

  336. of Christianity.

  337. The good news

  338. will never grow old

  339. or lose its power.

  340. since the day

  341. you hear it

  342. and every day

  343. onward for eternity

  344. it will be the power

  345. and beauty

  346. that bears fruit

  347. and increases

  348. that changes you

  349. changes everything.

  350. Consider the changes

  351. that Paul talks about

  352. right here in verses 4 and 5.

  353. He talks about

  354. faith in Christ.

  355. They have a new trust.

  356. He talks about

  357. love for the saints.

  358. They have a new mission.

  359. He talks about

  360. hope in heaven.

  361. They have a new future.

  362. Can you think of

  363. a more complete description

  364. of the Christian life

  365. and faith

  366. and hope

  367. and love?

  368. That is what the gospel

  369. produces and grows.

  370. And look at Paul's prayer

  371. in verses 9 through 14.

  372. What does he ask for?

  373. In essence,

  374. he's asking that

  375. these things

  376. would continue

  377. to increase.

  378. That what they heard

  379. would fill them.

  380. That the Holy Spirit

  381. would allow them

  382. to start plumbing

  383. the depths of the gospel

  384. and what it means

  385. in their lives.

  386. And so,

  387. when it comes to love,

  388. Paul prays that they

  389. would bear fruit

  390. in every good work

  391. and increase

  392. in the knowledge of God.

  393. And when it comes

  394. to faith,

  395. he prays that they

  396. would be strengthened

  397. with all power

  398. according to his glorious

  399. might for all endurance

  400. and patience

  401. with joy.

  402. Because what do we need

  403. in our faith in this life?

  404. We need endurance

  405. patience

  406. and patience

  407. with joy.

  408. And when it comes

  409. to hope,

  410. Paul prays that they

  411. would give thanks

  412. to the Father

  413. who's qualified you

  414. to share

  415. in the inheritance

  416. of the saints of light.

  417. You see, friends,

  418. in the gospel,

  419. they had received

  420. the whole thing.

  421. Everything God

  422. wanted to say,

  423. everything God

  424. wanted to impart

  425. was right there.

  426. Now the rest

  427. of the Christian life

  428. is unpacking

  429. that great gift.

  430. It's a bit like

  431. a child in the womb,

  432. you know.

  433. From the moment

  434. of conception,

  435. all of that child's

  436. genetic makeup

  437. is present

  438. in that single cell.

  439. Nothing more

  440. needs to be added.

  441. They're fully alive.

  442. But oh,

  443. how that child

  444. in the womb

  445. will grow

  446. and change

  447. and give rise

  448. to beautiful,

  449. wonderful life

  450. in the womb

  451. and out of the womb.

  452. Through the infant

  453. and toddler years,

  454. through elementary school,

  455. through the teenage years

  456. and into adulthood,

  457. it was all right there,

  458. right from the beginning.

  459. Everything needed

  460. to become a mature

  461. man or woman

  462. biologically,

  463. the whole message

  464. was right there

  465. in that single

  466. fertilized embryo.

  467. It didn't look like much,

  468. but it was teeming

  469. with life.

  470. The gospel's

  471. the same way.

  472. It's all there.

  473. Everything that will

  474. bring you

  475. to full maturity,

  476. to the full glory

  477. that God intends for you,

  478. it's all in the gospel message.

  479. And oh,

  480. how profound

  481. the gospel is.

  482. The entire Bible

  483. unpacks

  484. and unfolds

  485. this message,

  486. and we will spend

  487. eternity plumbing

  488. the depths

  489. of its wonder.

  490. The apostle Peter

  491. says in his first letter

  492. that the things

  493. of the gospel

  494. are so wonderful

  495. and so profound

  496. that they are things

  497. into which even angels

  498. long to look.

  499. So we must keep

  500. the gospel central

  501. in our lives, friends.

  502. We must keep

  503. the gospel central

  504. in our church

  505. because of what

  506. the gospel alone

  507. can do.

  508. It is the thing

  509. that bears fruit

  510. and increases.

  511. It changes us,

  512. and it changes everything.

  513. But of course,

  514. that brings us

  515. to our second point,

  516. right?

  517. We must keep

  518. the gospel central

  519. in our lives

  520. because of what

  521. the gospel declares.

  522. Because at this point,

  523. we have to ask,

  524. how does the gospel

  525. do what it does?

  526. If it is this wonderful,

  527. productive,

  528. explosive thing,

  529. how does it do that?

  530. Why is the gospel

  531. alone the thing

  532. that will bear fruit

  533. in our lives

  534. and increase?

  535. Well, let's return

  536. to verse 6.

  537. Again, Paul says,

  538. the gospel has come

  539. to you as indeed

  540. in the whole world

  541. it's bearing fruit

  542. and increasing

  543. as it also does

  544. among you

  545. since the day

  546. you heard it

  547. and understood.

  548. Understood what?

  549. What is it

  550. that the Colossians

  551. heard and finally

  552. understood in the gospel?

  553. What was the message?

  554. What was the good news

  555. that produced

  556. such radical,

  557. ongoing change?

  558. Since the day

  559. you heard it

  560. and understood

  561. the grace of God

  562. in truth.

  563. The grace of God

  564. in truth.

  565. That's what the gospel

  566. and the gospel alone

  567. declares.

  568. The grace of God

  569. in truth.

  570. Brothers and sisters,

  571. at the end of the day,

  572. do you know what produces

  573. authentic community?

  574. Do you want to know

  575. what ignites

  576. passionate worship?

  577. Do you know

  578. what motivates

  579. and energizes

  580. social concern

  581. and creative

  582. long-term love

  583. for neighbors

  584. and communities

  585. and cities?

  586. Do you know

  587. what the heartbeat

  588. of real spiritual

  589. formation is?

  590. It's the grace

  591. of God

  592. in truth.

  593. Friends,

  594. the good news

  595. at the heart

  596. of Christianity

  597. brings you

  598. face-to-face

  599. with the grace

  600. of God

  601. in truth.

  602. And how does it

  603. do that?

  604. It does that

  605. because the good news

  606. at the heart

  607. of Christianity

  608. brings you

  609. face-to-face

  610. with the person

  611. and work

  612. of Jesus Christ.

  613. who is this

  614. Jesus?

  615. Read the Gospels

  616. for yourself.

  617. Do you see

  618. Him there

  619. calming storms

  620. and healing

  621. the sick

  622. and giving sight

  623. to the blind?

  624. What are we

  625. to make

  626. of these

  627. historical accounts

  628. about Jesus,

  629. these miraculous

  630. things that the

  631. historical records

  632. testify to?

  633. What are we

  634. to make

  635. of all that?

  636. simply this,

  637. that in Jesus

  638. the Creator

  639. has entered

  640. His creation.

  641. And when it

  642. seemed like

  643. the waves

  644. of brokenness

  645. and sin

  646. and darkness

  647. had all but

  648. overcome

  649. God's good creation,

  650. when it seemed

  651. like the curse

  652. of sin

  653. had won

  654. and that creation

  655. was a lost

  656. project

  657. destined for

  658. failure and

  659. destruction,

  660. salvation,

  661. God

  662. stepped in

  663. to rescue

  664. the creation

  665. He loved,

  666. to heal it,

  667. to restore it,

  668. to put things

  669. right.

  670. Who else

  671. could calm

  672. the storms

  673. other than

  674. the One

  675. who had created

  676. the seas?

  677. Who else

  678. could restore

  679. sight to the blind

  680. but the One

  681. who separated

  682. light from

  683. darkness

  684. in the beginning

  685. and called

  686. it good?

  687. Who else

  688. could bring

  689. the dead

  690. back to life

  691. but the One

  692. who was the

  693. author of life

  694. itself?

  695. In verse 15

  696. of our passage,

  697. Paul says that

  698. Jesus is the image

  699. of the invisible

  700. God,

  701. the firstborn

  702. of all creation.

  703. For by Him

  704. all things

  705. were created

  706. in heaven

  707. and on earth,

  708. visible and

  709. invisible,

  710. whether thrones

  711. or dominions

  712. or rulers

  713. or authorities,

  714. all things

  715. were created

  716. through Him

  717. and for Him.

  718. And He's

  719. before all things

  720. and in Him

  721. all things

  722. hold together.

  723. now we can

  724. often trip

  725. over that word

  726. firstborn,

  727. can't we?

  728. But what did

  729. this rightful

  730. owner of

  731. everything

  732. do

  733. when He

  734. came to

  735. earth?

  736. Imagine you

  737. had made

  738. the world,

  739. you know,

  740. and the whole

  741. thing was being

  742. totally messed up

  743. and going to

  744. smash

  745. because of

  746. the people

  747. you had

  748. made in

  749. the middle

  750. of it.

  751. What would

  752. you do

  753. when you

  754. came back

  755. to earth?

  756. What did

  757. Jesus do?

  758. Did He

  759. calm storms

  760. and heal

  761. the sick

  762. and raise

  763. the dead

  764. and then

  765. seize power

  766. and crush

  767. His enemies?

  768. Did He

  769. hit the reset

  770. button

  771. and just

  772. blank it out

  773. like we used

  774. to do on

  775. our old

  776. Nintendos

  777. when things

  778. were going

  779. bad?

  780. You just

  781. hit the reset

  782. button.

  783. Boop,

  784. you're right

  785. back at the

  786. beginning.

  787. Great.

  788. Is that

  789. what Jesus

  790. does?

  791. No.

  792. Even though

  793. Jesus Christ

  794. has the right

  795. to judge

  796. all of

  797. creation

  798. because it's

  799. His

  800. and because

  801. in Him

  802. it all

  803. holds

  804. together,

  805. He doesn't

  806. come in

  807. judgment.

  808. He comes

  809. to save.

  810. He came

  811. to reconcile

  812. us to God.

  813. He comes

  814. to save

  815. us to

  816. God.

  817. You see,

  818. Jesus,

  819. friends,

  820. is not

  821. just supreme

  822. in creation.

  823. Jesus

  824. also is

  825. supreme

  826. in redemption.

  827. Paul goes

  828. on to say,

  829. He is the

  830. head of the

  831. body,

  832. the church.

  833. He is the

  834. beginning,

  835. the firstborn

  836. from the dead,

  837. that in

  838. everything

  839. He might be

  840. preeminent.

  841. for in Him

  842. all the

  843. fullness of

  844. God was

  845. pleased to

  846. dwell,

  847. and through

  848. Him to

  849. reconcile to

  850. Himself all

  851. things,

  852. whether in

  853. earth or in

  854. heaven,

  855. making peace

  856. by the

  857. blood of

  858. His cross.

  859. You stand

  860. now,

  861. friends,

  862. staring at

  863. the heart

  864. of the

  865. good news.

  866. God

  867. in Jesus

  868. has

  869. reconciled

  870. sinners

  871. to Himself.

  872. We were

  873. dead in

  874. our trespasses

  875. and sin,

  876. but Jesus

  877. Christ

  878. entered into

  879. death for

  880. us so

  881. that we

  882. could be

  883. made alive.

  884. The

  885. firstborn,

  886. the ruler

  887. over all

  888. creation,

  889. became the

  890. firstborn

  891. from the

  892. dead.

  893. In other

  894. words,

  895. the very

  896. source of

  897. life has

  898. now become

  899. the source

  900. of new

  901. life for

  902. all who

  903. believe.

  904. the

  905. creator of

  906. life went

  907. down into

  908. death so

  909. that those

  910. destined to

  911. die might

  912. live.

  913. In our

  914. sin,

  915. we were

  916. enemies of

  917. God who

  918. deserved

  919. His wrath,

  920. but through

  921. Jesus,

  922. God was

  923. pleased to

  924. reconcile to

  925. Himself all

  926. things,

  927. how,

  928. making peace

  929. by the

  930. blood of

  931. His cross.

  932. forgiveness.

  933. In Him,

  934. we have

  935. redemption,

  936. verse 14

  937. says,

  938. the forgiveness

  939. of sins.

  940. This is the

  941. grace of

  942. God.

  943. In truth,

  944. in truth,

  945. you see,

  946. what God

  947. did in

  948. Jesus,

  949. He did

  950. in truth,

  951. in history,

  952. in reality,

  953. not just in a

  954. realm of

  955. ideas or

  956. thoughts,

  957. but here,

  958. as real as

  959. the blood

  960. flowing through

  961. your veins,

  962. as real as

  963. the stars and

  964. the sky,

  965. and as real as

  966. the dust of

  967. the earth,

  968. God dwelt

  969. fully in

  970. Jesus Christ

  971. and accomplished

  972. in history,

  973. in creation,

  974. the redemption

  975. of creation,

  976. and the

  977. rescue of

  978. history.

  979. What God

  980. did in

  981. Jesus,

  982. He did

  983. in truth.

  984. And what

  985. God did in

  986. Jesus,

  987. He did

  988. in grace.

  989. There's a

  990. reason you know

  991. that the

  992. message of

  993. Christianity

  994. was called

  995. good news

  996. from the

  997. very beginning.

  998. Just think of

  999. all the words

  1000. that the

  1001. apostles could

  1002. have used

  1003. to describe

  1004. this message

  1005. of what God

  1006. had done

  1007. and revealed

  1008. and accomplished

  1009. in Jesus.

  1010. And they

  1011. called it

  1012. news.

  1013. They called

  1014. it a

  1015. euangelion,

  1016. a good

  1017. message that's

  1018. meant to be

  1019. herald and

  1020. announced.

  1021. And it's

  1022. news because

  1023. it's something

  1024. that's been

  1025. done.

  1026. When the

  1027. apostles proclaimed

  1028. the death and

  1029. resurrection of

  1030. Jesus,

  1031. they didn't

  1032. come to

  1033. city after

  1034. city after

  1035. city and

  1036. say,

  1037. listen,

  1038. we've

  1039. come to

  1040. tell you

  1041. good advice.

  1042. We're

  1043. going to

  1044. start a

  1045. podcast to

  1046. give you

  1047. ten tips

  1048. on how to

  1049. live happier,

  1050. healthier,

  1051. and longer

  1052. if you

  1053. just do

  1054. it.

  1055. No.

  1056. They

  1057. said we've

  1058. come to

  1059. tell you

  1060. good news.

  1061. Advice is

  1062. something you

  1063. have to do.

  1064. News is

  1065. something that's

  1066. already been

  1067. done.

  1068. Christianity

  1069. is not a

  1070. message about

  1071. what you

  1072. have to

  1073. do to

  1074. reconcile

  1075. yourself to

  1076. God,

  1077. to get

  1078. right.

  1079. Christianity

  1080. is a

  1081. message about

  1082. what Jesus

  1083. has done

  1084. to reconcile

  1085. you to

  1086. God,

  1087. to put

  1088. you right.

  1089. It's not a

  1090. message of

  1091. works that

  1092. you have to

  1093. perform,

  1094. but of

  1095. grace freely

  1096. offered and

  1097. received.

  1098. Grace that

  1099. was incredibly

  1100. costly for

  1101. Jesus,

  1102. His own

  1103. blood was

  1104. shed,

  1105. but grace

  1106. that is

  1107. utterly free

  1108. of charge

  1109. to you

  1110. and to

  1111. me.

  1112. Just imagine

  1113. with me,

  1114. friends,

  1115. if you

  1116. really

  1117. understood

  1118. the grace

  1119. of God

  1120. and truth.

  1121. What would a

  1122. church be like

  1123. that really

  1124. understood,

  1125. as Paul says

  1126. here,

  1127. the grace

  1128. of God

  1129. and truth?

  1130. Would we

  1131. not be a

  1132. people of

  1133. great faith

  1134. in Christ?

  1135. Would the

  1136. grace of

  1137. God and

  1138. truth not

  1139. draw us

  1140. forth to

  1141. trust Him

  1142. more deeply

  1143. and to

  1144. place our

  1145. lives into

  1146. His hand?

  1147. If that

  1148. is how

  1149. much God

  1150. loves us,

  1151. can we

  1152. not entrust

  1153. our whole

  1154. lives to

  1155. Him?

  1156. If we

  1157. really understood

  1158. the grace

  1159. of God

  1160. and truth,

  1161. would we

  1162. not be

  1163. just a

  1164. people of

  1165. great faith,

  1166. but also a

  1167. people of

  1168. great hope?

  1169. In Christ,

  1170. we are

  1171. heirs of

  1172. the new

  1173. creation.

  1174. We will

  1175. be raised

  1176. with Him

  1177. in glory.

  1178. And that

  1179. means our

  1180. works in

  1181. this life

  1182. are not

  1183. in vain,

  1184. that they

  1185. too will

  1186. be swept

  1187. up in

  1188. the

  1189. resurrection

  1190. work of

  1191. God.

  1192. Our

  1193. works are

  1194. not in

  1195. vain in

  1196. this life

  1197. because

  1198. Jesus has

  1199. conquered

  1200. death.

  1201. And no

  1202. matter how

  1203. dark or

  1204. difficult the

  1205. days become,

  1206. the future

  1207. God has

  1208. in store

  1209. for creation

  1210. and for

  1211. His church

  1212. is radiant.

  1213. We have an

  1214. anchor of

  1215. hope that

  1216. holds us

  1217. fast in

  1218. the fiercest

  1219. storms.

  1220. Nothing

  1221. can shake

  1222. us.

  1223. But if we

  1224. really understood

  1225. the grace of

  1226. God in

  1227. truth,

  1228. we wouldn't

  1229. just be a

  1230. people of

  1231. great faith

  1232. and great

  1233. hope,

  1234. but we

  1235. would be a

  1236. people of

  1237. great love.

  1238. Having been

  1239. shown such

  1240. incredible love

  1241. by God in

  1242. Christ,

  1243. how could we

  1244. not turn

  1245. and love

  1246. others?

  1247. How could we

  1248. not now go

  1249. and live a

  1250. life worthy

  1251. of this

  1252. gospel of

  1253. grace?

  1254. Friends,

  1255. for Christians,

  1256. love ought to

  1257. be the

  1258. defining mark

  1259. of our

  1260. lives.

  1261. Why?

  1262. Because God

  1263. demonstrated His

  1264. love toward

  1265. us in this,

  1266. that Christ

  1267. died for us

  1268. and He's

  1269. poured His

  1270. love into

  1271. our hearts

  1272. by the

  1273. Holy Spirit.

  1274. Just think

  1275. of how the

  1276. gospel of

  1277. grace frees

  1278. you to

  1279. love.

  1280. Consider,

  1281. what is it

  1282. that keeps

  1283. us from

  1284. genuine love

  1285. of neighbor?

  1286. So many

  1287. things,

  1288. right?

  1289. Sometimes we're

  1290. worried about

  1291. what other

  1292. people think

  1293. of us.

  1294. We're so

  1295. worried about

  1296. what other

  1297. people think

  1298. of us that

  1299. we stop

  1300. thinking about

  1301. how we

  1302. might actually

  1303. do some

  1304. good to

  1305. them.

  1306. But you

  1307. see,

  1308. the gospel

  1309. comes and

  1310. it frees us

  1311. from the

  1312. need for

  1313. human approval

  1314. because it

  1315. says,

  1316. in Christ,

  1317. you are

  1318. now a

  1319. beloved

  1320. son or

  1321. daughter of

  1322. God.

  1323. It says

  1324. that we are

  1325. accepted by

  1326. the creator

  1327. of all

  1328. things.

  1329. We've been

  1330. reconciled to

  1331. the one that

  1332. holds all

  1333. things together.

  1334. other.

  1335. No human

  1336. approval could

  1337. compare to

  1338. that.

  1339. So we're

  1340. free.

  1341. We're free

  1342. from what

  1343. others think

  1344. of us.

  1345. And now

  1346. we're free

  1347. to think

  1348. of them

  1349. and to

  1350. think of

  1351. how we

  1352. might really

  1353. love them.

  1354. You see,

  1355. we don't need

  1356. people anymore

  1357. for their

  1358. approval.

  1359. We don't

  1360. need them

  1361. so now we

  1362. can love

  1363. them.

  1364. sometimes

  1365. what keeps

  1366. us from

  1367. genuine

  1368. love of

  1369. neighbor

  1370. are the

  1371. hurts and

  1372. the wounds

  1373. of the

  1374. past.

  1375. You know,

  1376. we remember

  1377. how someone

  1378. ignored us

  1379. or how

  1380. someone spoke

  1381. an unkind

  1382. word about

  1383. us and

  1384. our hearts

  1385. grow hard

  1386. and bitter

  1387. and then

  1388. we stop

  1389. trusting not

  1390. just that

  1391. person but

  1392. other people

  1393. too.

  1394. But the

  1395. gospel comes

  1396. and tells

  1397. us a

  1398. forgiveness

  1399. forgiveness.

  1400. That our

  1401. sins were

  1402. actually

  1403. infinitely

  1404. greater than

  1405. our neighbor's

  1406. sins against

  1407. us.

  1408. And rather

  1409. than hold

  1410. our sins

  1411. against us,

  1412. infinitely

  1413. great though

  1414. they were,

  1415. God forgave

  1416. all of our

  1417. sins in

  1418. Christ and

  1419. reconciled us

  1420. to Himself.

  1421. And this

  1422. forgiveness

  1423. we've received

  1424. from God

  1425. begins to

  1426. soften our

  1427. hearts

  1428. towards our

  1429. neighbors,

  1430. even those

  1431. who've

  1432. wronged us.

  1433. Begins to

  1434. soften our

  1435. hearts towards

  1436. them.

  1437. And we

  1438. start to do

  1439. the costly

  1440. work of

  1441. forgiveness

  1442. because God

  1443. has done that

  1444. costly work

  1445. for us.

  1446. You know,

  1447. sometimes what

  1448. keeps us from

  1449. genuine love

  1450. of neighbor is

  1451. simply the

  1452. idol of our

  1453. own achievements

  1454. or our own

  1455. pleasures.

  1456. We're consumed

  1457. with our own

  1458. projects and

  1459. plans and

  1460. prestige,

  1461. wanting to

  1462. make a name

  1463. for ourselves

  1464. in the world,

  1465. or we're

  1466. consumed with

  1467. our own

  1468. pleasures and

  1469. preoccupations,

  1470. not caring or

  1471. bothering with

  1472. what might bless

  1473. other people.

  1474. we're just so

  1475. caught up in

  1476. ourself.

  1477. But the

  1478. gospel of

  1479. grace is the

  1480. thing that opens

  1481. our eyes to

  1482. our neighbors.

  1483. It wakes us up

  1484. to the truth

  1485. that real,

  1486. lasting life

  1487. isn't found in

  1488. the fleeting

  1489. accolades or

  1490. pleasures of

  1491. this world.

  1492. This world could

  1493. never satisfy

  1494. the human soul.

  1495. God's put

  1496. eternity into

  1497. your heart.

  1498. do you think

  1499. the things of

  1500. this life could

  1501. fill what God

  1502. has placed there?

  1503. No.

  1504. Only the grace

  1505. of God in

  1506. Christ can reach

  1507. to the depths

  1508. of our humanity

  1509. and make it

  1510. whole and make

  1511. it satisfied.

  1512. And when we've

  1513. tasted and seen

  1514. that the Lord

  1515. is good,

  1516. those accolades

  1517. and those

  1518. pleasures of

  1519. the world,

  1520. they've lost

  1521. their power

  1522. over us.

  1523. They don't want to

  1524. enthrall us

  1525. anymore.

  1526. We're not

  1527. captivated by

  1528. their spell.

  1529. We see life

  1530. differently now.

  1531. We consider all

  1532. people through

  1533. Christ.

  1534. We see everyone

  1535. through the lens

  1536. of God's grace.

  1537. And our desire

  1538. now isn't to

  1539. kind of get

  1540. out of this

  1541. world what we

  1542. want.

  1543. Our desire

  1544. now is to

  1545. see God's

  1546. grace glorified

  1547. for what it

  1548. is and to

  1549. see others

  1550. come to hear

  1551. and understand

  1552. this grace

  1553. for themselves

  1554. so that they

  1555. too can

  1556. know the

  1557. only real

  1558. satisfaction and

  1559. joy in this

  1560. life.

  1561. So, friends,

  1562. we wrap up.

  1563. At the center

  1564. of everything

  1565. we do as a

  1566. church must be

  1567. the good news

  1568. of the gospel,

  1569. the grace of

  1570. God and truth,

  1571. the message of

  1572. who Jesus is

  1573. and what He's

  1574. done.

  1575. This is what

  1576. must energize

  1577. and unite

  1578. and define us.

  1579. And the more

  1580. we hear it

  1581. and the more

  1582. we explore

  1583. its depths

  1584. and the more

  1585. we work out

  1586. its implications,

  1587. the more it

  1588. will bear fruit

  1589. and increase,

  1590. not just here

  1591. in our church

  1592. among us,

  1593. but through

  1594. us out

  1595. in the world.

  1596. That seed

  1597. that begins

  1598. in us

  1599. will start

  1600. to grow

  1601. and it

  1602. will go out

  1603. and even

  1604. though it

  1605. starts small

  1606. like a mustard

  1607. seed,

  1608. it will begin

  1609. a movement

  1610. that pushes

  1611. down deep

  1612. roots that

  1613. can't be shaken,

  1614. that sends

  1615. branches out

  1616. to the sky

  1617. and soon

  1618. even the

  1619. birds of the

  1620. air are

  1621. resting in

  1622. its shade,

  1623. as Jesus

  1624. says in

  1625. his parables.

  1626. And at the

  1627. center of it

  1628. all is

  1629. Jesus Christ

  1630. our Lord,

  1631. to whom

  1632. all glory

  1633. belongs.

  1634. Friends,

  1635. Jesus is the

  1636. good news.

  1637. He's the

  1638. center.

  1639. In him

  1640. all things

  1641. hold together

  1642. and if he

  1643. holds you

  1644. together,

  1645. then you'll

  1646. be secure

  1647. in life

  1648. and in death

  1649. and in

  1650. the life

  1651. to come.

  1652. Let's

  1653. pray.

  1654. Father,

  1655. our prayer

  1656. as we

  1657. begin a

  1658. new school

  1659. year is

  1660. that you

  1661. would

  1662. captivate

  1663. us again

  1664. by the

  1665. wonder of

  1666. your grace

  1667. in Christ.

  1668. Jesus,

  1669. by your

  1670. Spirit,

  1671. help us

  1672. to see

  1673. and treasure

  1674. you in

  1675. fresh and

  1676. new ways

  1677. this year.

  1678. Would the

  1679. heartbeat of

  1680. our community

  1681. be this

  1682. grace in

  1683. truth that

  1684. is you,

  1685. Jesus.

  1686. Exalt

  1687. yourself

  1688. through us.

  1689. We pray

  1690. this in

  1691. your mighty

  1692. name.

  1693. Amen.
